Everybody is saying go, go, go, and he goes. It is a try! | :00:31. | :00:45.
Hello and welcome to Old Trafford for the 20 Rugby league World Cup | :00:46. | :00:50.
final. This is the trophy, the Aussies want it back. In 2008 we had | :00:51. | :01:01.
the World Cup taken from us. It is not just about skill, you have to | :01:02. | :01:16.
hold your nerves. A penalty try awarded to New Zealand. That is a | :01:17. | :01:24.
try! A shocking mistake. We want the World Cup back. I am Cameron Smith, | :01:25. | :01:36.
welcome to the World Cup final. Thank you very much to Cameron Smith | :01:37. | :01:40.
for introducing the final on the BBC. The former England captain | :01:41. | :01:47.
Jamie Peacock is part of our team. The other two, quite frankly, | :01:48. | :01:52.
deserve a camera shot all of their own. Robbie Hunter-Paul from the | :01:53. | :02:03.
Kiwi's prospective, and Brian Noble. You have got a handkerchief. You | :02:04. | :02:09.
have got fishing tackle on your jacket. I have never seen anybody | :02:10. | :02:15.
able to carry out sports and checks. Well done for giving it a try. It is | :02:16. | :02:22.
all going on out there, like my mind. How excited are you? Your | :02:23. | :02:30.
country in the final again. I got up very early, I am well prepared, I | :02:31. | :02:39.
could not sleep last night. There is a lot of needle in this game because | :02:40. | :02:43.
of what happened in the final and 2008. You have been talking to | :02:44. | :02:49.
Stephen Kearney, the coach, and they are pumped for this. Yes, the Kiwi | :02:50. | :02:57.
boys are confident against the Aussies. It is their trophy as well | :02:58. | :03:00.
and they are holding it at the moment. My big worry for the Kiwis | :03:01. | :03:10.
is they are over cut. They had a really big game last week. The | :03:11. | :03:15.
question of Australia is have they had enough games of sufficient | :03:16. | :03:18.
toughness to get them ready for this final? The Aussies came into this | :03:19. | :03:27.
tournament pretty relaxed. They have made 13 consecutive finals, said | :03:28. | :03:33.
that is understandable. They have an inbred confidence they all | :03:34. | :03:37.
understand. You put on that green and gold jumper and you expect to | :03:38. | :03:41.
win and it has been like that for the last few years. But they have | :03:42. | :03:46.
got to come out and play against New Zealand. Just explain what happens | :03:47. | :03:53.
when New Zealand play Australia in a match that matters. The Aussies have | :03:54. | :04:00.
won nine out of 11 between them. But the one that really mattered, the | :04:01. | :04:05.
2010 four Nations final, the Kiwis won that. Do they raise the game for | :04:06. | :04:13.
the ones that matter? For the people at home to understand the passion | :04:14. | :04:19.
New Zealand have, you have to think about the Ashes. The reality is it | :04:20. | :04:24.
is about winning not all the games, but about winning the big ones and | :04:25. | :04:28.
the important ones and there are none more important than this. I was | :04:29. | :04:35.
talking to Cameron Smith and they seem to be more concerned about New | :04:36. | :04:41.
Zealand and England. Yes, I have heard that from inside the camp as | :04:42. | :04:46.
well. The Kiwis have got the game to beat them, but more importantly the | :04:47. | :04:54.
Kiwis believe they can beat them. Brian thinks the Australians are a | :04:55. | :04:59.
bit undercut coming into this game and we will see exactly how they got | :05:00. | :05:05.
here. They started off by beating England. New Zealand beat England | :05:06. | :05:39.
this time last week. Burgess, what a try! | :05:40. | :05:59.
He has done it, he has nailed it. Still incredibly painful to watch | :06:00. | :07:35.
for those of us who were not involved on the field. Sam burgess | :07:36. | :07:39.
has joined us, which we are delighted about. It must be harder | :07:40. | :07:45.
for you to watch. Like I said today, walking through the streets to get | :07:46. | :07:52.
here, there is a great atmosphere. Thank you for reminding me about | :07:53. | :07:57.
last week, but it is going to be a good spectacle for rugby league. How | :07:58. | :08:04.
hard has it been to try and think what if? There were so many. There | :08:05. | :08:12.
always is. Today I was probably think a lot more than I did during | :08:13. | :08:23.
the week. Last week was a great game. Unfortunately, we were on the | :08:24. | :08:27.
wrong side of the scoreline, but I am very proud of the team and the | :08:28. | :08:34.
staff and all their efforts. We have no idea how much we wish you were | :08:35. | :08:41.
not here, if that makes sense. Last week, you said Sam's performance was | :08:42. | :08:46.
the best performance in an English shirt for 20 years. I meant every | :08:47. | :08:50.
word I said. I thought it was outstanding. It was the most | :08:51. | :08:55.
outstanding performance I have ever seen for a long time. I just thought | :08:56. | :09:01.
you set the lead for the team throughout the game. Cheers, last | :09:02. | :09:07.
week Paul Deacon said to me before the game he needed me to play as | :09:08. | :09:11.
well as I could if we had a chance of winning. I enjoyed playing in | :09:12. | :09:20.
that jumper. I enjoyed the day and the atmosphere, but it is | :09:21. | :09:23.
unfortunate we did not get the result. You are a player who raises | :09:24. | :09:33.
his game in the England shirt. International Rugby league is a lot | :09:34. | :09:38.
different to club rugby league. Games are won or lost on efforts off | :09:39. | :09:44.
the ball as well as on the ball. You know yourself. It is all effort and | :09:45. | :09:50.
you are representing your country and your family and everything. It | :09:51. | :09:56.
brings out the best in players. That is why I love playing for England. | :09:57. | :10:02.
You talk about what Jamie means to you and how he has brought you up. | :10:03. | :10:11.
Take a look at Jamie's reaction. Look how scared Robbie looks. That | :10:12. | :10:17.
is what it meant to us watching last week. Yeah, I think that is great. | :10:18. | :10:25.
This country is very patriotic. It is brilliant support we have had | :10:26. | :10:29.
throughout the whole tournament. It has been a joy to play in. Something | :10:30. | :10:36.
happened last week when I scored that try. We can reveal what | :10:37. | :10:43.
happened when the earlier try went over. My false teeth flew out across | :10:44. | :10:52.
the studio. I was aware of a commotion behind me. We did not | :10:53. | :10:58.
realise he had put them in upside down! As far as George is concerned, | :10:59. | :11:04.
your brother, this must have been a difficult week for him because of | :11:05. | :11:10.
his involvement in the penalty and a high tackle on Sonny boy Williamson. | :11:11. | :11:17.
How is he? He is disappointed with that tackle. But he has had a good | :11:18. | :11:21.
year and he did a lot of good things for his club and his country this | :11:22. | :11:26.
year. Two pin one thing on a player... Sam is absolutely right, | :11:27. | :11:35.
that is one moment. They were probably others that England could | :11:36. | :11:40.
have done better, but it was not the highlight of the day and it was not | :11:41. | :11:45.
the game breaking play. That happens with big bloke on big bloke all the | :11:46. | :11:52.
time. For the moment, thank you. Sam is standing here next to us as an | :11:53. | :11:56.
international rugby league player, but this is how it all began for Sam | :11:57. | :12:03.
and his brothers. It was a huge part of my life. I spent a lot of time | :12:04. | :12:10.
there as a kid. My dad coached there and my other three brothers played | :12:11. | :12:14.
there as well. I started when I was five years old. We were bred into | :12:15. | :12:29.
it, being four brothers. It was set in stone we were going to go there | :12:30. | :12:41.
as well. The dad was a coach down here. He coached all his kids. They | :12:42. | :12:47.
were a close-knit family. Sam was an outstanding player from 13. He was | :12:48. | :12:55.
always head and shoulders above everybody else. My mum and dad were | :12:56. | :12:59.
good at getting extra training and we had a chance to play from five or | :13:00. | :13:06.
six years old, playing so young. They were to really likeable lad. My | :13:07. | :13:13.
mum bought us red and blue boots to tell the difference between us on | :13:14. | :13:22.
the pitch. They realised how good and big they work when Sam started | :13:23. | :13:26.
to make it, but unfortunately Mark passed away. The biggest impact it | :13:27. | :13:38.
had was on Sam because he became the carer and he did everything for | :13:39. | :13:48.
Mark. It really made Sam Grow up. He realistically became the dad and he | :13:49. | :13:53.
brought the twins on. I am really proud of my little brothers and they | :13:54. | :13:57.
are always my little brother no matter how little they are. They got | :13:58. | :14:06.
to Australia via Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos. We are proud they are | :14:07. | :14:10.
playing for their country, but they deserve it because they are good, | :14:11. | :14:16.
grounded lads. Having seen that and having watched the game, if a kid | :14:17. | :14:22.
wants to get into rugby league now, what advice would you give them? Get | :14:23. | :14:29.
your boots on and go and enjoy it. I was down at the Hall last night and | :14:30. | :14:34.
I said, enjoy your time and play with your friends. When you are 24 | :14:35. | :14:44.
or 25, or 34 or 35, you never forget your junior rugby league days. I | :14:45. | :14:49.
said, get out there and enjoy it, it is a special time in your life. | :14:50. | :14:56.
Brian is delighted if you think he is 35. You brought Sam into | :14:57. | :15:00.
Bradford, what would you say to the kids who want to get involved? Get | :15:01. | :15:09.
down to wherever you can play rugby league. The more and more people we | :15:10. | :15:16.
have playing, you will love it. It's the mates that you get through it | :15:17. | :15:20.
all, carries yon through your life. We saw Sam's dad in the piece, that | :15:21. | :15:27.
no know if you've heard Brian's story about his encounter. My very | :15:28. | :15:35.
first professional game as an under 19, you old fellow was playing | :15:36. | :15:42.
professionally for the opposition, we went round the old boys club, | :15:43. | :15:48.
your old fellow whacked me before we got on the field! So being a brave | :15:49. | :15:54.
soldier, I tried to make the best of it can he was a lot bigger than me, | :15:55. | :16:02.
the referee was a great referee in the local society and | :16:03. | :16:04.
professionally, he sent us both off before we even got to the field! He | :16:05. | :16:12.
said, right, you're off! Right, it's a tournament that has seen 27 games | :16:13. | :16:18.
so far, one to go. Plenty of other states as well. | :16:19. | :16:43.
They get a standing ovation, that has been a magnificent game. | :16:44. | :17:24.
He has dropped it! Slipped over the line! Oh, dear. | :17:25. | :18:00.
We have seen some spectacular hits, some fascinating bits of skill, and | :18:01. | :18:08.
yet, I am led to believe that that video of her sniffing your shorts is | :18:09. | :18:12.
one of the most watched viral things in Australia. So I have heard! She | :18:13. | :18:18.
asked me for my shorts on the other side of the field, I've said I had | :18:19. | :18:23.
some embarrassing undies on, I didn't think the cameras were | :18:24. | :18:27.
rolling, they caught me off guard! She was happy, anyway! You haven't | :18:28. | :18:33.
seen her for two weeks, but today... I wouldn't do that! I had never seen | :18:34. | :18:41.
fear in your eyes before! Lets tell you how the Australians got here. We | :18:42. | :18:44.
touched on an earlier. They were only tested earlier in the | :18:45. | :18:54.
tournament. There try-line hasn't been crossed since. | :18:55. | :19:04.
Let's hear from Tim Sheens, their coach. You may be halfway round the | :19:05. | :19:11.
world but I get the impression a nation expects of you and your team? | :19:12. | :19:17.
Yes, there will be expectation, that's obviously for the fans and | :19:18. | :19:20.
the media and everyone else. From our point of view it's about the | :19:21. | :19:24.
process today of playing well right through the game, not worrying too | :19:25. | :19:29.
much about the end result, it's tense to look after itself. I know | :19:30. | :19:36.
you have said that it's not about revenge, 2008 is history, but some | :19:37. | :19:41.
of your lessons learnt a hard lesson that they. It really was five years | :19:42. | :19:49.
ago, if you start worrying about what happened then, it's just | :19:50. | :19:55.
something you don't need. So we really haven't talked about it, the | :19:56. | :19:58.
media have tried to bring it up a little bit, with respect to you all, | :19:59. | :20:03.
but the guys are just focused on this, this is about this team and | :20:04. | :20:11.
this year. Is Billy Slater 100% fit? He wouldn't be playing if he wasn't. | :20:12. | :20:18.
What does he bring to the team? He could coach the team, he could coach | :20:19. | :20:21.
the team, he's that sort of player commie talks them through | :20:22. | :20:24.
everything. The French style to Greg Inglis but he is the sort of guy | :20:25. | :20:28.
that could coach the team -- different style to Greg Inglis. Tim | :20:29. | :20:34.
Sheens says that Billy Slater is 100% it. | :20:35. | :20:39.
Do you think it is a risk playing Slater? No, I think what he said is | :20:40. | :20:53.
really telling, the fact he can coach this team shows what a smart | :20:54. | :20:57.
player he is, and regardless of injury, Slater is a key part of this | :20:58. | :21:04.
team. Leaving him to the side, where else can the Aussies win this? | :21:05. | :21:10.
Fundamental to this is the Queensland core that runs through | :21:11. | :21:14.
the centre, Billy Slater at fullback this guy right here is one of the | :21:15. | :21:17.
world 's greatest fullbacks, one of the greatest in the completion. Then | :21:18. | :21:22.
we have the stand-off, Johnathan Thurston, energetic and dynamic. | :21:23. | :21:29.
Cooper Crunk and Cameron Smith, both of these guys, they revived the | :21:30. | :21:37.
smart bits of play that get this Australian team around the field. -- | :21:38. | :21:41.
they provide. They all play together for Queensland. Expect to see these | :21:42. | :21:49.
guys come up with the big decisions in the big moments of the game and | :21:50. | :21:52.
get them right. Myself and Jamie have played against them on a number | :21:53. | :21:56.
of occasions and that the crucial moments, they get the play is right, | :21:57. | :22:03.
they make this team take. He is getting braver and braver! A couple | :22:04. | :22:07.
of the Aussies look like they wanted clatter him. The fact that you | :22:08. | :22:13.
Slater is back means the Australians have their best players in the best | :22:14. | :22:19.
position? I think so, a lot of them want him at fullback, to put the | :22:20. | :22:24.
best centre back into his position also unhappy decent player like | :22:25. | :22:30.
Slater really helps. I don't think there is a risk, they were training | :22:31. | :22:34.
on Wednesday and they batted him, so he is ready to play. If you look at | :22:35. | :22:38.
the bench line-up, they are not worried about him. You mean they | :22:39. | :22:45.
properly put him through his cases? -- places? Last week he did tell us | :22:46. | :22:48.
that when he suffered the injury against the US, a suffered more pain | :22:49. | :22:54.
when he received the injury then and when he did the original injury 12 | :22:55. | :23:02.
months before. That hurt anybody. What happened to him on Wednesday on | :23:03. | :23:07.
the training field didn't quite replicate that but it's hard when | :23:08. | :23:09.
you are in a vulnerable position, but he was picked up, stamped on, | :23:10. | :23:16.
trampled on, he is fit to play. A shake of the head as you saw that | :23:17. | :23:23.
try. It's not nice seeing that one. He might need his boots on stop he | :23:24. | :23:33.
was right in amongst it! Let's just look at Thurston. He has been trying | :23:34. | :23:37.
some of his kicks into this corner while we have been stood here. I | :23:38. | :23:42.
think he is key to this Australian team winning it, it's the accuracy | :23:43. | :23:48.
of his kicks. You can see where they land, a yard from the goal line. | :23:49. | :23:53.
They don't score that time, they get a bit of luck on another cake, but | :23:54. | :24:00.
his accuracy is incredible. -- another kick. A yard away from the | :24:01. | :24:09.
goal line again. The games are won by building pressure, using the | :24:10. | :24:15.
right kicks at the right time. Using a slightly different variation of | :24:16. | :24:19.
the kick, but again, this art the same way they want to. I love the | :24:20. | :24:26.
cake hear from him, and again, he landed in that area. -- a lovely | :24:27. | :24:37.
cake here. A pertinent point about the kicking game, because it's so | :24:38. | :24:44.
size from Australia, Cameron Smith creates a kind of pressure. The | :24:45. | :24:49.
Kiwis have to do the same. If they don't find a kicking game better | :24:50. | :24:53.
than the one they established last week and through the tournament, it | :24:54. | :24:56.
will be tough for them. That's what the Aussies do well, they keep the | :24:57. | :25:03.
ball in play. They try and where the opposition down that way. For the | :25:04. | :25:07.
Kiwis to get the win, like Jamie Peacock said, they are going to have | :25:08. | :25:12.
two disrupt Crunk and Thurston when they are kicking and try and force | :25:13. | :25:20.
some errors. If the ball goes out into touch, it will favour them. | :25:21. | :25:26.
We're going to let Ryan go now. He's going to join the commentary team, | :25:27. | :25:34.
take one last look at the outfit! Robbie will rejoin us after we look | :25:35. | :25:39.
at the semifinals from a Kiwi point of view. | :25:40. | :25:49.
Penalty to New Zealand! A moment the heroes! -- moment for heroes. | :25:50. | :26:03.
With literally seconds to play! Now he has a kick to win the game. | :26:04. | :26:19.
They showed the courage to stay in their full stop and Sean was doing | :26:20. | :26:27.
his thing. The boys, they showed right courage to get into the | :26:28. | :26:35.
positions to get Sean to do a bit of magic. England played very well, we | :26:36. | :26:41.
are going to have to improve our game, there are aspects that need a | :26:42. | :26:45.
lot of work. Just have to go out and enjoy the moment. Here is how New | :26:46. | :26:50.
Zealand got to the final. They were tested and they were | :26:51. | :27:11.
tested to their physical limits, we saw Sonny Bill in that piece, with | :27:12. | :27:16.
ice on him, as if he was in an episode of cat -- casualty! Will | :27:17. | :27:22.
that physicality have taken it out of him? I don't think so, they have | :27:23. | :27:29.
been building momentum, hopefully they will be able to build on | :27:30. | :27:33.
everything as opposed to knock them about, it was a physical game, the | :27:34. | :27:38.
intensity stayed all the way through to the final play of the game, which | :27:39. | :27:43.
we saw Shaun Johnson breaking British hearts. We talked about | :27:44. | :27:50.
Thurston, do you want to look at the New Zealand halves? They need to | :27:51. | :27:57.
make sure the halves dominate the game. We know they have the strike | :27:58. | :28:00.
weapons on the edge but it needs Shaun Johnson to get it together, | :28:01. | :28:09.
they are doing those strikes together. If they have this type of | :28:10. | :28:17.
talent, with the strike factor weapons, they can get over the | :28:18. | :28:25.
try-line. Having that game sense to know that there will be people | :28:26. | :28:32.
sitting back in the whole, and they can get over the try-line. There we | :28:33. | :28:38.
see the play that breaks the English hearts. Once again, we're looking | :28:39. | :28:41.
about the individual ability of the New Zealanders. You can see the | :28:42. | :28:48.
footwork of Shaun Johnson, he just stops Kevin Sinfield, he stutters, | :28:49. | :28:55.
he bounces out and you tell lies with your eyes, you see George | :28:56. | :29:01.
coming across as well, that's what New Zealand can bring. What they | :29:02. | :29:05.
need to do, importantly, is make sure they play in the middle of the | :29:06. | :29:17.
park, and the halves are crucial. He gave him a little tap as he went | :29:18. | :29:23.
past. Did you talk about that in the England dressing room at half-time? | :29:24. | :29:27.
Not really, that's just individual audience. Sometimes you can't stop | :29:28. | :29:32.
things that people throw at you, you saw Shaun Johnson, with the | :29:33. | :29:37.
footwork. But I think the Kiwis to do well, they have to put everything | :29:38. | :29:41.
together, the halves need to mix it with the forward and link it with | :29:42. | :29:45.
the backline. I think we are in for a great game today, great spectacle. | :29:46. | :29:51.
Speaking of the forwards, let's go and join Earl Crabtree who has been | :29:52. | :29:58.
looking at them. If New Zealand want to get their hands on the World Cup, | :29:59. | :30:03.
they have to win the middle of the field, they have two dominate, the | :30:04. | :30:08.
likes of Hargreaves and the Bromwich, they have to make sure | :30:09. | :30:13.
they dominate there. If they do that they stand a good chance. And they | :30:14. | :30:18.
give themselves an opportunity off the bench to make sure they can lift | :30:19. | :30:31.
the intensity. Isaac Luke has been sensational. He is going to beat the | :30:32. | :30:37.
one to watch. He will be exploiting any chinks in the armour. Off the | :30:38. | :30:44.
back of that is a player we have not mentioned yet. Sonny Bill Williams. | :30:45. | :30:48.
Expect to see magic from that guy tonight. He knows how to turn it on. | :30:49. | :30:56.
When he wants to do it, he will do it. The New Zealand players just | :30:57. | :31:05.
walking behind us now. A lot of the crowd are in Kiwi deer. They are | :31:06. | :31:09.
standing and they are applauding as they go off. All of this, this whole | :31:10. | :31:16.
game is being played against the backdrop of what happened five years | :31:17. | :31:24.
ago. The Kiwis have played Australia in two previous World Cup finals, | :31:25. | :31:37.
losing them both. I think we are in for a 1090 minutes. And that has | :31:38. | :31:49.
stunned New Zealand after such a good opening. Things are not going | :31:50. | :32:07.
as planned. Wonderful passing. The skipper is over the line. I think he | :32:08. | :32:19.
has got it down! They Kiwi crowd is going wild. It is the biggest upset | :32:20. | :32:23.
ever in the history of the World Cup. New Zealand, the champions of | :32:24. | :32:34.
the world. They were the players who won it five years ago. Here are the | :32:35. | :32:40.
players who are going to try and retain it this afternoon at Old | :32:41. | :32:46.
Trafford. Three of the members of the 2008 team are in the 17 today. | :32:47. | :32:52.
Stephen Kearney coached them five years ago and he coaches them this | :32:53. | :33:03.
afternoon. He led the Haka. He is with Robbie Hunter-Paul. What are | :33:04. | :33:10.
your memories of the 2000 Rugby league World Cup final? I remember | :33:11. | :33:14.
getting beaten and it was not a great memory. It was a wonderful | :33:15. | :33:20.
occasion for us. We were pretty close in the game, but we did not | :33:21. | :33:27.
quite manage it. We have to do it today. You had success in 2008. Can | :33:28. | :33:38.
you do it again ten night? We are here and we feel we have not had our | :33:39. | :33:43.
best performance out there yet in this tournament. I am pretty sure it | :33:44. | :33:51.
is going to be today. What are the key moments or key individuals you | :33:52. | :33:54.
are looking for from the Australians? They have a number. | :33:55. | :34:02.
Cameron Smith is very influential. Billy is back in the group. You | :34:03. | :34:11.
could name 17. For as it is about ourselves and putting in our best | :34:12. | :34:16.
performance. If we play to our best ability today, we will give | :34:17. | :34:22.
ourselves a great chance. It was a physical game against England last | :34:23. | :34:28.
week. How have you prepared? The guys are in great spirit. We are in | :34:29. | :34:33.
the World Cup final. It has been a challenge to keep your feet on the | :34:34. | :34:37.
ground most of the week, but they are in good spirits and I am pretty | :34:38. | :34:43.
sure it will be a great performance. Stephen Kearney was talking to | :34:44. | :34:48.
Robbie. We are ten minutes away from seeing some of the biggest stars in | :34:49. | :35:13.
rugby league. # Chrome I need to know now, now now, will you love me | :35:14. | :35:26.
again? # I need to know now, will you love me again? # . It is getting | :35:27. | :35:45.
close. They will be in the tunnel very shortly. The Australian team go | :35:46. | :35:53.
through their final warm ups. We can hear from two of them now. How could | :35:54. | :36:08.
you get sick of that face? That is sensational from the kangaroos. It | :36:09. | :36:15.
has been a successful campaign so far. We have improved in every match | :36:16. | :36:19.
since the first game, but this will have to be a bigger effort. A few | :36:20. | :36:27.
guys involved in the 2008 World Cup, it is still disappointing we | :36:28. | :36:32.
lost that game. It has not been tough for the Kiwis. We are here to | :36:33. | :36:39.
be the 2013 champions. It is nothing to do with making up what happened | :36:40. | :36:45.
in 2008 because nothing is going to change the result. You and me. He | :36:46. | :37:02.
gets a bit annoying. He is a bit of a personality. We went to the zoo | :37:03. | :37:11.
and we went to the Guinness brewery. That will be the one and | :37:12. | :37:25.
only Guinness I will have. We saw Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. I am a | :37:26. | :37:34.
fan of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. He has got great footwork. I think England | :37:35. | :37:43.
are pretty unlucky not to be in the final. There have been too many. | :37:44. | :37:55.
When I think about it it was not funny at the time because it's done. | :37:56. | :38:04.
That was a good shot because he was about 30 metres away. He did not | :38:05. | :38:16.
have much to work with. We need to play our best footie to beat the | :38:17. | :38:21.
Kiwis, there is no doubt about that. It is going to be a special night | :38:22. | :38:28.
for myself personally to work -- walk out in the kangaroos' site at | :38:29. | :38:36.
Old Trafford. He likes to laugh. There is no doubt they have enjoyed | :38:37. | :38:42.
this tournament. But you want to concentrate on Smith and his head to | :38:43. | :38:44.
concentrate on Smith and his head-to-head battle with Isaac Luke. | :38:45. | :39:00.
Eyes Luke likes to be very direct. But at the start he has only had two | :39:01. | :39:09.
kicks from dummy half an Cameron has had 20. Cameron has got many strings | :39:10. | :39:13.
to his bow and he is a great leader for the Australian team. The sun is | :39:14. | :39:22.
shining. How beautiful is that? The stadium is full for this 2013 Rugby | :39:23. | :39:28.
league World Cup final. We saw them hugging each other making their way | :39:29. | :39:35.
out into the tunnel. How will they be feeling? They will be excited | :39:36. | :39:39.
because they know the whole year is resting on the next few minutes. We | :39:40. | :39:46.
used to own this trophy and we need to protect it and we need to go out | :39:47. | :39:52.
and own it once again. We are coming in against underdogs, but they have | :39:53. | :39:57.
to go up against Australia and believe in themselves and play for | :39:58. | :40:02.
their full 80 minutes with intensity. They are underdogs and | :40:03. | :40:08.
they can go head to head with the Aussies. I think the game against | :40:09. | :40:14.
the English will stand the Kiwis in good stead. What you cannot factor | :40:15. | :40:21.
in is collision. They are going from ten Myles an hour collisions up to | :40:22. | :40:27.
30 Myles an hour collisions. It will take some time for the Australians | :40:28. | :40:32.
to adjust to that. You live in Australia and you work in | :40:33. | :40:36.
Australia, Robbie, how much does five years ago cropped up? It must | :40:37. | :40:43.
still play on the minds of some of those who featured five years ago? | :40:44. | :40:50.
The Australians are a very passionate nation. For the Kiwis it | :40:51. | :40:57.
gives them a sense of confidence, they know they can go out and get | :40:58. | :41:02.
the job done. That is what makes for a great game today. I am sure the | :41:03. | :41:07.
hairs will be standing up on the back of their necks. This is the | :41:08. | :41:15.
2013 Rugby league World Cup final. Here, Australia and New Zealand. | :41:16. | :41:42.
There is determination and concentration on 26 men as they walk | :41:43. | :41:49.
towards the middle of this Old Trafford pitch. I wonder as they | :41:50. | :41:54.
came out if they took a moment to look around and take in the crowd as | :41:55. | :41:58.
they applaud them to their team line ups. A few moments from getting | :41:59. | :42:07.
underway in the World Cup final. The anthems will be sung by Russell | :42:08. | :43:04.
Watson. # Australians all let us rejoice. # For we are young and | :43:05. | :43:10.
free. # We've golden soil and wealth for | :43:11. | :43:14.
toil. # Our home is girt by sea. | :43:15. | :43:18.
# Our land abounds in nature's gifts. | :43:19. | :43:23.
# Of beauty rich and rare. # In history's page let every stage. | :43:24. | :43:36.
# Advance Australia fair. # In joyful strains then let us | :43:37. | :43:39.
sing. # Advance Australia fair. | :43:40. | :44:19.
# E Ihoa Atua. # O nga iwi matou ra. | :44:20. | :44:29.
# Ata whakarongona. # Me aroha noa. # Kia hua ko te pai. | :44:30. | :44:38.
# Kia tau to ata whai. # Manaakitia mai. | :44:39. | :45:07.
# Aotearoa. # God of nations! At Thy feet. # In | :45:08. | :45:14.
the bonds of love we meet. # Hear our voices, we entreat. # God defend | :45:15. | :45:21.
our Free Land. # Guard Pacific's triple star. | :45:22. | :45:26.
# From the shafts of strife and war. # Make her praises heard afar. # God | :45:27. | :45:31.
defend New Zealand. The crowd show their appreciation of | :45:32. | :45:58.
Russell Watson singing both national anthems. We are not down with the | :45:59. | :46:07.
pre-match rituals. Let's see what happens when the Kiwis do the haka | :46:08. | :46:09.
this afternoon. They didn't get as close as they did | :46:10. | :47:56.
five years ago. It's an intimidating atmosphere. This is the rugby league | :47:57. | :48:01.
World Cup final 2013. Forget what it could have been and enjoy what it's | :48:02. | :48:02.
going to be. The Kiwis are the holders but the | :48:03. | :48:48.
underdogs. The Kangaroos want their trophy back. And Old Trafford is a | :48:49. | :48:52.
herbalist shop for a potential epic here today. -- are fabulous actor. | :48:53. | :48:59.
New Zealand had a couple of injury concerns in the build-up, Elijah | :49:00. | :49:08.
Taylor is back at loose forward. Vatuvei and Tuivasa-Sheck are both | :49:09. | :49:15.
fit. Tuivasa-Sheck has been an electrifying presence on the wing | :49:16. | :49:19.
for the Kiwis. Alex Glenn coming in on the bench. For Australia, their | :49:20. | :49:23.
the consent has been over fullback Lee Slater. He is fit and having to | :49:24. | :49:29.
have a positive influence. Greg Inglis moves back into the three | :49:30. | :49:34.
quarters. What an imposing presence he provides. | :49:35. | :49:43.
The referee today is an Englishman, Richard Silverwood. There isn't | :49:44. | :49:51.
Englishman on the touchline. -- there is an Englishman. The final | :49:52. | :49:57.
act at the end of five fabulous weeks of drama, it really has been a | :49:58. | :49:59.
wonderful tournament and this should be a fitting finale. Look at that! | :50:00. | :50:08.
We are in for a cracker. Last week was a banquet, this is a feast, or | :50:09. | :50:14.
the other way round! This is going to be a belter. There is an early | :50:15. | :50:22.
mistake by Bromwich. But that one down to nerves. He rushed up, took | :50:23. | :50:32.
his eyes off the ball. Great attacking position now for | :50:33. | :50:33.
Australia. Probably not the start the Kiwis | :50:34. | :50:46.
wanted. Big, big test now. Early in the match. Australia looking to | :50:47. | :50:53.
stamp their authority on the game right from the off. | :50:54. | :51:04.
Brett Morris is often the one who goes under the headlines but he a | :51:05. | :51:11.
really good player. Really efficient finisher. | :51:12. | :51:39.
There were hands in there. Foran puts it behind the line. I thought | :51:40. | :51:53.
the Aussies knocked that on. They are asking for a video decision full | :51:54. | :52:08.
mighty relief for the Kiwis. They were strong, they put halfback | :52:09. | :52:22.
pressure on. One of the interesting dynamics, the first courage to have | :52:23. | :52:28.
made back-to-back finals in the long history of these world cups, the | :52:29. | :52:34.
dynamic is who the crowd sides with. Normally you would expect them to go | :52:35. | :52:38.
with New Zealand but given that New Zealand eat England last week it'll | :52:39. | :52:44.
be interesting to see how they go. I think they will definitely support | :52:45. | :52:50.
New Zealand, they were definitely going the Aussies when they came | :52:51. | :52:51.
out. Police later had an important role | :52:52. | :53:04.
five years ago, with an uncharacteristic mistake -- police | :53:05. | :53:08.
later. I wonder if he has memories of that. One of the tactics the | :53:09. | :53:15.
Australians will use is put Shaun Johnson under pressure and disrupt | :53:16. | :53:19.
the New Zealand kicking game. I think New Zealand need to take a | :53:20. | :53:23.
leaf out of their book, do the same to Thurston and to Evans if he comes | :53:24. | :53:26.
on the field, and Cameron Smith. Kieron Bryan ran Billy Slater | :53:27. | :53:44.
offered, the penalty goes Australia's way. Great field | :53:45. | :53:47.
position. What at the bottom of your screen, | :53:48. | :53:52.
that is far too obvious. They are going for gold, which is | :53:53. | :54:08.
probably a sign of the respect between these two teams. There is a | :54:09. | :54:15.
huge advantage in the centre. Greg Inglis and Jarryd Hayne, what a | :54:16. | :54:19.
class pairing that is. If they get a lot of ball today, that could be | :54:20. | :54:25.
significant, there are -- they are bigger and quicker than their | :54:26. | :54:26.
opposite numbers. Johnathan Thurston is on for a | :54:27. | :54:40.
record, six more points and he beats the international point-scoring | :54:41. | :54:44.
record, established by Mick Cronin. 309 points. The first two of the | :54:45. | :54:51.
game, taking Thurston to within four points of making that record. And | :54:52. | :55:00.
more pertinently, Australia lead. It's bubbly on the back of quite an | :55:01. | :55:05.
obvious shoulder charge from Foran. -- it's probably. They dropped the | :55:06. | :55:12.
ball once, the Kiwis, and given a penalty away, that is why we are | :55:13. | :55:16.
seeing the two point difference. I think they are quite pleased it is | :55:17. | :55:18.
only two points. Very narrow in goals here, at Old | :55:19. | :55:32.
Trafford. You're kicking has to be precise. You don't want to give away | :55:33. | :55:37.
too much from restarts. Any crossfield kicks, you don't want | :55:38. | :55:38.
them to go dead. Australia look to roll forward. | :55:39. | :56:04.
Trying to build some momentum here in these early stages. | :56:05. | :56:16.
Hoping for an awkward bounce but Tuivasa-Sheck has collected it, he | :56:17. | :56:23.
so often beats that first man, he did it again. We spoke at the top of | :56:24. | :56:30.
the show about the intensity of this game, who would have most, but most | :56:31. | :56:41.
of the green and gold, they will understand pressure from second one | :56:42. | :56:46.
until the last second. I think Tuivasa-Sheck is struggling. He | :56:47. | :56:52.
started limping. He is gone, I think. He's going off. He had the | :56:53. | :57:00.
injury coming in, didn't he? He was hurt against England. There were | :57:01. | :57:04.
doubts about him coming in this week. You can see the shin is | :57:05. | :57:09.
heavily strapped up. At one stage they thought it might have been | :57:10. | :57:15.
broken last week. First involvement in the game and he is off, that is | :57:16. | :57:21.
very, very sad to him. New Zealand, in the meantime, in decent position | :57:22. | :57:25.
inside the Australian half. Foran across the line! Could take by | :57:26. | :57:49.
Mannering, still going. He has left an Australian player down injured, | :57:50. | :57:52.
Jarryd Hayne looks in all kinds of trouble. Up go the big hands of | :57:53. | :57:58.
Sonny Bill Williams, a dangerous off-load outside, he has gone on the | :57:59. | :58:04.
inside. The referee says knock-on. I think we will get some treatment | :58:05. | :58:08.
here for Jarryd Hayne, who looks in a terrible way. He was whacked, | :58:09. | :58:15.
legitimately, as he was carrying the ball. That's a shame for the young | :58:16. | :58:27.
lead. -- the young lad. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, already. That's | :58:28. | :58:35.
rather innocuous, didn't look like anything stop --. I thought it was a | :58:36. | :58:47.
textbook tackle. It might have been that left knee clipping him. It's | :58:48. | :58:59.
got to be the head bone. -- hipbone. He is really struggling. He doesn't | :59:00. | :59:07.
look great, Jarryd Hayne. He made his way into this Australian side, | :59:08. | :59:10.
wasn't involved in the first game against England. And this is the | :59:11. | :59:14.
concern for Australia, Lewis having been injured earlier in the | :59:15. | :59:20.
tournament, they lose that second row three quarters person to bring | :59:21. | :59:32.
on. The worry was Slater. Now with the injury to Jarryd Hayne, it's a | :59:33. | :59:39.
different dynamic. I know Tim Sheens was saying earlier in the | :59:40. | :59:42.
tournament, when they tried to fill the three quarters line with a | :59:43. | :59:46.
second rower who wasn't used to playing there, that they had been | :59:47. | :59:49.
caught. New Zealand will be sensing this, if he goes off, although | :59:50. | :59:55.
having said that, looks as though he will be OK. He is up on his feet. | :59:56. | :00:05.
Jarryd Hayne 's stays on for the time being. He will try to run it | :00:06. | :00:06.
off if he can. They have gone through five and here | :00:07. | :00:53.
comes the last. Greg English almost got there. That is good play. Good | :00:54. | :01:05.
yardage. It was a great kick by Thurston. | :01:06. | :01:22.
We know how good and effective Isaac Luke is in that position, but he is | :01:23. | :01:33.
very selective. Sonny Bill Williams gets the ball every time. The timing | :01:34. | :01:47.
is to perfection. There was a far more pressure on the Kiwi fullback | :01:48. | :01:53.
than Billy Slater. I think Slater got a lot of protection. | :01:54. | :02:33.
Straight into Greg Bird. The Australians are very patient. Like | :02:34. | :02:44.
the test match at the start we talked about the differences at the | :02:45. | :02:49.
highest level. They will wait for the minutest of opportunities and | :02:50. | :02:56.
execute. We have got news from both Benson -- ventures. He is tiny | :02:57. | :03:05.
Arnold. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck went straight in. Jarryd Hayne took a | :03:06. | :03:13.
bang on a nerve that goes down his neck, but he will be all right. That | :03:14. | :03:20.
is OK because it is not his head. He will run that off. A penalty for New | :03:21. | :03:30.
Zealand. Greg Bird loves to get under your skin, doesn't he? With | :03:31. | :03:36.
the little penalties he is a fantastic player. When he played | :03:37. | :03:41.
over here for Catalan he played in the harvest. -- the harvests. | :03:42. | :04:28.
That man Greg Bird, he is a good player. English is a powerful man, | :04:29. | :04:45.
but even he cannot push of three key ways. Australia have lost a bit of | :04:46. | :04:52.
ground. They will have to hand over the ball. The cake was not far | :04:53. | :05:06.
enough. John is down on the touchline. I am here with Mark | :05:07. | :05:13.
Webber, the Formula one star. What do you make of the game? It is | :05:14. | :05:19.
pretty tense, they are feeling each other out. It is great to see the | :05:20. | :05:24.
sport that I grew up with, rugby league, playing here today. It will | :05:25. | :05:30.
be a hot contest. What do you make of the World Cup so far? An awesome | :05:31. | :05:33.
tournament. A penalty to New Zealand. Mark | :05:34. | :06:01.
Webber is a Canberra fan. He had his last race last week for Red Bull. | :06:02. | :06:19.
Penalty for New Zealand, going for gold, no great surprise. It has been | :06:20. | :06:28.
an intense start to this game. They have taken quite a bit out of each | :06:29. | :06:41.
other. No clear-cut chances. I have to say the referee's it means you | :06:42. | :06:46.
certainly cannot miss him. You cannot mistake him for a player, can | :06:47. | :06:55.
you? He is not kicking the goal, you know he is the referee! We talked | :06:56. | :07:10.
about Mick Cronin who has 76 World Cup points. If Johnson kicks this, | :07:11. | :07:17.
he will equal that record. Here is an opportunity for Shaun Johnson, | :07:18. | :07:21.
the man who broke English hearts seven days ago. A chance to bring | :07:22. | :07:30.
parity to this World Cup final. A last, lingering look at the target | :07:31. | :07:39.
ahead of him. Old Trafford quiet and is a little as Johnson puts it over. | :07:40. | :07:45.
From the raucous nature of the Rohrer greeting those two points | :07:46. | :07:50.
from New Zealand, we are left in no doubt as to where the majority of | :07:51. | :07:53.
the sympathy lies in the audience today. | :07:54. | :08:15.
Australia looking to win their 10th world title in their 13th | :08:16. | :08:23.
consecutive World Cup final. Cameron Smith is a world class player, but | :08:24. | :08:30.
why do they kick to him? They call him the beast for a reason. But | :08:31. | :08:47.
Vatuvei has a bit of vulnerability. There is a suggestion he is not | :08:48. | :08:49.
great under the high ball. That is great play. They run back | :08:50. | :09:14.
and they stand in front of Billy Slater. They just stand there and | :09:15. | :09:23.
stop. They make it very difficult. Just watch this. They stopped so | :09:24. | :09:29.
they have to go around him. Cameron Smith has got the measure of | :09:30. | :09:55.
them. That is an inch perfect kick. New Zealand have the drop-out under | :09:56. | :10:01.
the sticks. Cameron Smith is a genius at this. They like to keep | :10:02. | :10:07.
the ball in play and you have to play every second. It was a great | :10:08. | :10:15.
kick. The chase was not great from the winner. Thurston gets across and | :10:16. | :10:20.
makes a tackle. They are telepathic, him, Thurston, Cronk and Billy | :10:21. | :10:26.
Slater. It is fantastic how they work together. A quartet with the | :10:27. | :10:34.
all conquering Queensland side as well and that makes a difference. | :10:35. | :10:40.
They perform season in an season out in these big games. They know each | :10:41. | :10:43.
other's play intimately. That is a good tackle, you have got | :10:44. | :11:12.
to close English down. Paul Gallen comes from New South Wales. It is | :11:13. | :11:28.
Slater who scores the game's opening try. That is why he is so important | :11:29. | :11:36.
to this Australian side. The timing of the run and the jump. He is not a | :11:37. | :11:44.
giant, but he is great in the air with his hands. A fantastic try. A | :11:45. | :11:57.
great kick from Thurston. A great leap from Billy Slater. The smallest | :11:58. | :12:06.
man in their back line. Watch this. That is great pinpoint accuracy. But | :12:07. | :12:12.
you have got to admire the leap and the catch and the finish. Super play | :12:13. | :12:18.
from Australia. Number four has got to try and get that. If you have got | :12:19. | :12:26.
a running jump to it, you have the advantage, and that is what this man | :12:27. | :12:32.
does, Billy Slater. You think he is going to take it anyway, but you | :12:33. | :12:38.
could get higher if you do a running jump at it and that is why Billy | :12:39. | :12:45.
Slater is so special. His timing was fantastic. He had eyes on the ball | :12:46. | :12:51.
all the way. But he watches the defender and he waits for him to | :12:52. | :12:55.
leap and that is how he timed his jump. He did not have to do it that | :12:56. | :13:00.
time because he could see the flight of the ball the full distance. There | :13:01. | :13:08.
may be a bit of redemption for 2008. Australia are back in the lead. Just | :13:09. | :13:15.
explaining to the viewers while the kick is so special. You are allowed | :13:16. | :13:21.
to catch Billy Slater whilst he is making the catch. That is just | :13:22. | :13:27.
before the line. He has got the run and the jump. A brilliant catch and | :13:28. | :13:32.
a brilliant cake. As Brian said earlier, they are great at finishing | :13:33. | :13:42.
sets off. That is the difference. They keep their composure, | :13:43. | :13:43.
brilliant. Australia looking to bring it | :13:44. | :14:08.
forward again. There is something about an Australian side in a big | :14:09. | :14:15.
match. They know their lines. I think it is a bit more than that. I | :14:16. | :14:22.
think Slater and Greg Inglis and Thurston and Cooper Cronk and Smith, | :14:23. | :14:26.
they know their roles and they know what they have to do. You cannot | :14:27. | :14:32.
switch off for a second. And when they kick well... It have to be | :14:33. | :14:46.
dealt with. What they do is they do the basics very well. Then you have | :14:47. | :14:51.
somebody do a bit of magic and that is the difference. It needs | :14:52. | :15:00.
something special from New Zealand to open this game up. At the moment | :15:01. | :15:05.
Australia have a stranglehold on proceedings. They have got to find a | :15:06. | :15:12.
kick. The difference between the two teams at the moment is the kicking | :15:13. | :15:16.
game and the accuracy of the kicking. | :15:17. | :15:27.
At the moment, they're not getting to Thurston. That is difficult for a | :15:28. | :15:35.
right footed player. You gets a good kick but hasn't got the yardage. | :15:36. | :15:40.
They don't really know who is going to kick the ball, is a Thurston, is | :15:41. | :15:47.
it Kronk? Is it Cameron Smith? Kevin Locke, they need to take the | :15:48. | :15:54.
pressure off Johnson. Any news from the sidelines? When I played against | :15:55. | :16:03.
the Australians previously, they put together periods of the game where | :16:04. | :16:07.
they are almost flawless. They are in that phase now, it's a very | :16:08. | :16:13.
dangerous period for New Zealand. They are rolling forward again here. | :16:14. | :16:36.
Juror ability stamped on his back. -- durability. A steam roller in | :16:37. | :16:49.
green and gold knocked him over. That's a great catch! He stays in | :16:50. | :16:57.
the field of play as well. Just to reinforce that, they are in this | :16:58. | :17:00.
period where they are taking all your energy out of you and you don't | :17:01. | :17:03.
ink you can do anything against them, so they need inspiration here, | :17:04. | :17:11.
New Zealand. -- you don't think. I think they find it difficult to get | :17:12. | :17:14.
into any field position. Although the yardage the Aussies are making, | :17:15. | :17:21.
it's so good, they haven't had any good field position yet. This is | :17:22. | :17:26.
where he is kicking from, the pressure is on. The Australians will | :17:27. | :17:30.
get over the halfway line easily. Australia, rolling it back now. | :17:31. | :17:57.
Parker is on the field. He was named in the international team of the | :17:58. | :18:05.
year, Corey Parker. He is only an interchange player when it comes to | :18:06. | :18:06.
the Australian World Cup side. Plenty of questions here! Loads of | :18:07. | :18:44.
them! And Richard Silverwood is not prepared to answer, from what he | :18:45. | :18:48.
saw. So it's handed to our video referee. | :18:49. | :19:01.
Start with the onside or offside. That's fine, all outside players are | :19:02. | :19:16.
onside. Through into the challenge. The Australian player attempts to | :19:17. | :19:33.
knock it back. OK, the Australian player hasn't touched it. Roll that | :19:34. | :19:40.
back again. Initially comes off the New Zealand player. It is now | :19:41. | :19:54.
touched the Australian player backwards, that's a zero tackle of | :19:55. | :20:01.
New Zealand. We have a knock-on by New Zealand at the moment. Just | :20:02. | :20:08.
normal speed, run this through fairly quick, we need to now confirm | :20:09. | :20:17.
the onside or offside. OK, this will be fine. If he's kicking it on the | :20:18. | :20:27.
line, he is onside. Run it through now. Both Cooper Kronk and Billy | :20:28. | :20:37.
Slater were onside. He's on the ground now. That's OK, no immediate | :20:38. | :20:47.
tackle. The ball is up. The hand is underneath. I am going to say the | :20:48. | :21:03.
hand is underneath. So the ball is up in this position. The ball is | :21:04. | :21:09.
still up, keep it running through. We have an Australian player in as a | :21:10. | :21:14.
potential driver. The hand is on the line. Can we look from the other | :21:15. | :21:20.
side? We have a possible penalty here with the driver. I cannot place | :21:21. | :21:28.
the ball on the ground. The hand is always underneath. He is only | :21:29. | :21:33.
touching the Australian player so that's OK. This will be no try, it | :21:34. | :21:42.
will be a penalty to New Zealand. It will be ten metres out. | :21:43. | :21:51.
There is a history of decisions going the way over New Zealand in | :21:52. | :22:01.
World Cup finals. That is an amazing tackle, a great, great tackle. To | :22:02. | :22:05.
stop the ball from being grounded, that's a special, special effort. I | :22:06. | :22:14.
think Kronk did ground the ball, but what the video referee says is, | :22:15. | :22:18.
you're not allowed to drive another player and impede a defender, I | :22:19. | :22:23.
think Fifita get involved in the tackle and pushes him. So it's | :22:24. | :22:29.
clearly a video to New Zealand in the repertory's mine. I think Fifita | :22:30. | :22:38.
thought he had scored. He looks as though he might be questioning the | :22:39. | :22:41.
decision, Tim Sheens. What a let off for New Zealand. Had Cooper Kronk | :22:42. | :22:47.
scored that try, you would have to say, a long way back for New | :22:48. | :22:52.
Zealand. He is a player who might give them some lake speed. -- lake | :22:53. | :23:01.
speed. A lot of shaking of the heads of the strange and! -- of the | :23:02. | :23:10.
Australians! We can't let that worry us. We have defended really well and | :23:11. | :23:14.
put ourselves in good positions, hopefully we can continue that. It | :23:15. | :23:19.
has to be a full 80 minutes from you guys will stop definitely. We have | :23:20. | :23:25.
got to be on our toes for the whole game. | :23:26. | :23:37.
The point is, they are allowed to stand still, although they clearly | :23:38. | :23:46.
moved their direction to get in the way of an attacking player. It's the | :23:47. | :23:50.
number of green shirts that is impeding the Kiwis, not what they | :23:51. | :23:52.
are doing. Also, what they do is they make the | :23:53. | :24:03.
early yards, they run very quickly, they get in position, so they don't | :24:04. | :24:09.
have to change their angle. I have to say again, difference so far has | :24:10. | :24:13.
been the quality of the kicking game. On the final tackle, the | :24:14. | :24:18.
quality hasn't been great from the Kiwis. There is an off load too far. | :24:19. | :24:27.
Given away to New Zealand. Now, can they pick up the momentum? | :24:28. | :24:40.
What a 12 months he has had back in rugby league, Sonny Bill Williams. | :24:41. | :24:51.
He just had to reach a little. But his footwork was good enough. | :24:52. | :25:04.
This next is the last play in this set. That's a good kick! | :25:05. | :25:13.
Australian defenders, right on the line. That is fabulous play. Morris | :25:14. | :25:22.
and Jarryd Hayne, involved in the tackle. That kick needed to be a | :25:23. | :25:34.
yard extra, a yard longer, he would have taken it over the try-line but | :25:35. | :25:42.
great defence. So Australia, having to do a bit of hard stuff here. | :25:43. | :25:48.
Billy Slater, shouting instructions to his team-mates and they have a | :25:49. | :25:51.
penalty. Hanging onto long, the Kiwi defenders. I think the referee | :25:52. | :25:57.
lasted a bit there, the Australians were claiming and whingeing, saying | :25:58. | :26:03.
that's a penalty, I don't know whether it is a tilt call, -- will | :26:04. | :26:12.
call... Certainly a relief from an Australian point of view. | :26:13. | :26:28.
Suddenly, there is a chance if Ford Deri is void! It might fill for | :26:29. | :26:57.
Cooper Kronk, who has got the try! Not the way it was intended, not | :26:58. | :27:04.
confirmed just yet. He has been denied once. Is he to be denied | :27:05. | :27:05.
again? Video referee again. Both players run through the line, | :27:06. | :27:32.
that's OK, so we are playing on. That's fine, he's onside. The | :27:33. | :27:43.
pick-up is clean. It's all good so far. The ball is up. That's fine, | :27:44. | :27:51.
that will be a try. No denying Cooper Cronk at the | :27:52. | :28:07.
second time of asking. And Australia do have their second try, and pushed | :28:08. | :28:15.
the lead up. Good communication as well, they can't get the passing | :28:16. | :28:22.
size Cooper Cronk, but what they have is good communication, and | :28:23. | :28:27.
there is a slip, one slip which gives Cooper Cronk that slight | :28:28. | :28:30.
advantage to get to the ball, which makes the difference. | :28:31. | :28:36.
In this team of stars, he was the Player of the Year in the NRL. | :28:37. | :28:47.
Thurston, looking to equal Mick Cronin's point-scoring record, | :28:48. | :28:55.
actually break it, can he goes to 310. | :28:56. | :29:10.
Old Trafford looks blended, doesn't it? Filled to capacity today. | :29:11. | :29:20.
Thurston curls this one round, he has done so superbly. A little | :29:21. | :29:24.
moment of international rugby league history for Thurston, he becomes the | :29:25. | :29:30.
most prolific international points scorer, with 310. Sonny Bill allows | :29:31. | :29:38.
the off load, great skills, get the boy away, there is the kick and | :29:39. | :29:43.
there is the slip. And Cooper Cronk is in. What are you saying, Earl | :29:44. | :29:52.
Crabtree? We're talking about the forward battle, I have been as | :29:53. | :29:56.
appointed, too many players falling off tackles and laying on the floor, | :29:57. | :30:02.
it's creating opportunities for the Australians, they have to tighten up | :30:03. | :30:05.
if they are going to get anything out of this. They need to stop the | :30:06. | :30:26.
gaps out why. The Australians are a really efficient team and they know | :30:27. | :30:32.
how to play. When somebody does not stop Thurston on that last play, it | :30:33. | :30:40.
is a try. They will get you. This is a kick off and look where they have | :30:41. | :30:47.
got to. Not a bad place to finish, but not quite what he would have | :30:48. | :30:59.
wanted. The Kiwis are desperate for a lift. You sense the crowd are | :31:00. | :31:08.
urging it as well. They are firing their big cannons. Kieran Foran has | :31:09. | :31:20.
been impressive. They have closed him down on the sidelines. They want | :31:21. | :31:27.
a very good finish. Johnson puts it high and Slater is | :31:28. | :31:53.
underneath it. He was off the ground when he was tackled and they are | :31:54. | :31:59.
claiming a penalty. They are making that kick just inside their own | :32:00. | :32:06.
half, so there is no pressure. Their possession and territory, 61 and 39. | :32:07. | :32:20.
That just says it all, really. We are all thrilled at the way | :32:21. | :32:25.
Australia are playing. This team can defend as well. They have not | :32:26. | :32:31.
conceded a point. One penalty against Fiji. 356 minutes since they | :32:32. | :32:46.
last conceded a try in a World Cup turn on. I do not know what to say. | :32:47. | :32:52.
They are good. You have got to be really good to beat them. They will | :32:53. | :33:02.
get you on your small play. That is six hours of tackling and tackling | :33:03. | :33:08.
and not conceding a try. That is a lot of extra time. Look how many | :33:09. | :33:14.
people are running with him. There are three men on the outside. You | :33:15. | :33:22.
cannot come off your man. On that occasion Greg Inglis is through. It | :33:23. | :33:26.
is very difficult to stop this Australian side. Johnathan Thurston | :33:27. | :33:34.
has kicked three out of three so far today. This is a significant moment | :33:35. | :33:39.
because it is a two scorer lead at the moment. If New Zealand got two | :33:40. | :33:46.
tries and converted them both, it would be all square. If he kicks | :33:47. | :33:50.
this, suddenly New Zealand are looking at a three scorer try. Where | :33:51. | :34:01.
are they meant the -- mentally? They are trying to play an Australian | :34:02. | :34:04.
type of game. They have got to offload, you have got to throw | :34:05. | :34:10.
something different at Australia. If you play them at their own game, | :34:11. | :34:21.
they will nail you. I thought New Zealand would take the game to the | :34:22. | :34:26.
Australian forwards. That has not been the case. Watch this off the | :34:27. | :34:36.
ball incident. Because they have had so much control possession, the | :34:37. | :34:46.
kicking has been so good. The Kiwis have not stamped their authority on | :34:47. | :34:52.
this game. We have not seen much of Sonny Bill Williams so far in this | :34:53. | :34:58.
game. The Australians are simply in complete control. | :34:59. | :35:17.
He is knocked on. New Zealand get a lift. They needed that. A bit of | :35:18. | :35:37.
luck. Yes, the foot is in. The lucky break that they wanted. Billy will | :35:38. | :35:49.
be hoping after five years, when people remember the past that he | :35:50. | :35:55.
threw it away. He will be hoping people will be saying remember that | :35:56. | :35:59.
try he scored in the World Cup final? But New Zealand have the | :36:00. | :36:06.
ability to counterpunch. We know that. | :36:07. | :36:34.
Suddenly the noise level is lifting around Old Trafford. Five kangaroos | :36:35. | :36:47.
were waiting for him. A great defence. Look at that. What a | :36:48. | :36:54.
defensive effort. It was like he looked up and suddenly thought, | :36:55. | :37:00.
where have my mates gone? Look at the numbers. Six green jumpers have | :37:01. | :37:09.
barrelled him out. He had no chance. He did not know, he thought he was | :37:10. | :37:15.
scoring. Should they have stepped in and made another few plays? I think | :37:16. | :37:25.
he should have stepped inside. Australia are WordPerfect so far. | :37:26. | :38:01.
Australia are keeping the ball close. This will be the final play | :38:02. | :38:11.
of the first half. The hooter sounds at half-time. How good was that from | :38:12. | :38:20.
the side in green and gold? Pretty impressive, very efficient, very | :38:21. | :38:26.
clinical. They defended supremely well. The Kiwis have to find an | :38:27. | :38:31.
answer. They are 40 minutes away from not retaining their trophy. A | :38:32. | :38:41.
fantastic first half performance by the Aussies. New Zealand have to | :38:42. | :38:46.
come from behind. How are they going to do it? Let's hear from Cameron | :38:47. | :38:52.
Smith, the captain. You must be really pleased with that first half. | :38:53. | :38:59.
Yes, it was. We had a simple game plan today, to run hard and make | :39:00. | :39:04.
sure we got the tackles in. A pleasing defensive effort. To keep | :39:05. | :39:10.
them down to only to point it is pretty good, but we will need a | :39:11. | :39:17.
bigger effort in the second half. We are here with Kieran Foran. A | :39:18. | :39:23.
difficult half? We have got to get back to winning the ground and | :39:24. | :39:28.
slowing them down. How do you stick with the Aussies when they are in | :39:29. | :39:34.
that mood? It is hard. They are winning the ground at the moment, | :39:35. | :39:39.
they are playing off quick play and winning the ball. We have got to | :39:40. | :39:45.
slow them down and hopefully make more of a ground game. All the best | :39:46. | :39:51.
in the second half. Jon Wilkin talking to the players. What a | :39:52. | :39:56.
dominant half that has been for Australia. They lead by 16-2. They | :39:57. | :40:12.
had 63% of the possession. Sam Burges, they have been dominant. | :40:13. | :40:21.
They have been very clinical and they have kept the ball in play. It | :40:22. | :40:27.
is going to be very hard for the Kiwis to win with that amount of | :40:28. | :40:31.
ball, but full credit to the Aussies. JP pointed out a few times, | :40:32. | :40:38.
that Thurston's kicking game is good. You are like a Mystic Meg. You | :40:39. | :40:46.
see how things are going to work and that is exactly what happens. | :40:47. | :40:50.
Australia's kicking game has been crucial. Yes, you need an accurate | :40:51. | :40:54.
kicking game. That is how you win games, with a | :40:55. | :41:05.
great kick and chase. They have starved them of possession. You will | :41:06. | :41:12.
see Cameron Smith with a great kick again into the corner. His partner | :41:13. | :41:20.
in crime is chasing. We saw them before in the build-up. Thurston is | :41:21. | :41:24.
chasing hard and they force a goal-line dropout because it leads | :41:25. | :41:29.
eventually to a try. It leads to pressure and they get another set of | :41:30. | :41:34.
six. Cooper Cronk with a great kick again. But what Jamie is pointed out | :41:35. | :41:41.
is it is not one person doing kicking, it is different players. | :41:42. | :41:49.
That is a problem for the Kiwis. It is a problem for the Kiwis. It is | :41:50. | :41:56.
kicking pressure. There is not enough intensity getting to the guy | :41:57. | :42:00.
kicking the ball and the reality is there are a number of different | :42:01. | :42:05.
players who can do that. Who are you looking at? When you are in the | :42:06. | :42:08.
middle of the park and you make a few tackles, you are trying to | :42:09. | :42:13.
think, sometimes you can get away from the script a little bit. Let's | :42:14. | :42:21.
start with Billy Slater's try. He is back and he has proved his fitness. | :42:22. | :42:27.
It is a team effort to defend this and the big guys let them down a bit | :42:28. | :42:32.
here. It is a great kick from Thurston. Slater is up there to take | :42:33. | :42:40.
the ball. It is a great score for Australia. This is what separates | :42:41. | :42:44.
the sides, the ability to score from kicks. They are always kicking from | :42:45. | :42:56.
the front foot and it is easy. Cooper Cronk had one disallowed. The | :42:57. | :43:03.
second time it was allowed. And some great lead up play by the | :43:04. | :43:07.
Australians. They are a bit tired at the moment. The ball went out the | :43:08. | :43:19.
back and they got the overlap in the numbers. Cooper Cronk is back in the | :43:20. | :43:26.
middle. We saw Issac Luke trip and fall a little bit. But did you see | :43:27. | :43:31.
the amount of Australians poring through? New Zealand should have got | :43:32. | :43:35.
back there in numbers. There should have been an intensity there. Their | :43:36. | :43:40.
energy levels are starting to drop because they have had to do so much | :43:41. | :43:46.
tackling. On Issac Luke stopping Cooper Cronk for the try that was | :43:47. | :43:52.
not given. That was fantastic. He showed a great desire to stop the | :43:53. | :43:57.
try. Not stopping until the final missal -- whistle. Often things like | :43:58. | :44:02.
this can lift a team to get back in the game. It got Robbie going. It | :44:03. | :44:14.
does not take much! It is a great individual effort. I am sure they | :44:15. | :44:17.
will be disappointed in the dressing room. In the World Cup final I | :44:18. | :44:23.
thought we would get more energy and a bit more from the Kiwis. Let's | :44:24. | :44:29.
hope they step it up. Stephen Kearney is giving them a good | :44:30. | :44:39.
talking to. It is the kicking with Cameron Smith, and his ability to | :44:40. | :44:43.
control the game. He is like a little general out there. The Kiwis | :44:44. | :44:51.
have not used the ball enough to see the best of eyes that look. I think | :44:52. | :44:58.
the Aussies have controlled the Kiwis after the kicks. They make the | :44:59. | :45:08.
first three tackles in sets. They have made more tackles. They have | :45:09. | :45:15.
defended very well. The Aussies have got a real emphasis on controlling | :45:16. | :45:25.
plays one and two and three. I want to show display here. It's a nice | :45:26. | :45:31.
shape, they didn't quite executed, you see the two runners, I think the | :45:32. | :45:36.
play is supposed to be designed to turn the fullback out the back and | :45:37. | :45:46.
have a 31. You see this from Australia, defusing try scoring | :45:47. | :45:53.
opportunities. You can't tell me that Australia aren't motivated by | :45:54. | :46:01.
2008, come on the! I reckon Vatuvei was dragged over the try-line, that | :46:02. | :46:06.
was a penalty for me. But you are impartial? Definitely! Despite the | :46:07. | :46:15.
black and white bow tie and hanky! This tournament has been special for | :46:16. | :46:20.
all sorts of reasons, one of them being that it is the BBC's voice of | :46:21. | :46:28.
rugby league last tournament. We will to him in a moment. -- talk to | :46:29. | :46:37.
him. I think the game has to be obtaining, and it is my job to bring | :46:38. | :46:41.
out the entertainment as well. That is a sensational try, it must | :46:42. | :46:58.
rank among the finest ever seen on this ground! Was and did Shakespeare | :46:59. | :47:05.
who said, good league one would always beat a good little one, if he | :47:06. | :47:11.
was alive today, he would say that about these Australians. I certainly | :47:12. | :47:15.
wouldn't like to meet him in a dark street. The personality that has | :47:16. | :47:24.
always been on the telly, I know he has links with my high school, | :47:25. | :47:30.
probably given my dad became! -- the cane. People like him because he's | :47:31. | :47:38.
that kind of man, he has been in the game for a long time, we will miss | :47:39. | :47:47.
him. Thanks for all the memories and the commentator, which always makes | :47:48. | :47:52.
me smile. For me, the best commentator in rugby league ever. | :47:53. | :47:53.
Sheer class! We are all smiling. You have made us | :47:54. | :48:05.
all smile. But what you said at the top of that peace is so true, there | :48:06. | :48:09.
is humour in the game and it has to be entertaining. It has. You have | :48:10. | :48:15.
got to have humour as a commentator, you can have so many statistics and | :48:16. | :48:22.
facts, but they only go so far, the audience like little stories, I | :48:23. | :48:25.
dotes about players, people and so on. I think there is great humour | :48:26. | :48:31.
and camaraderie between the players in the game and stop here, they're | :48:32. | :48:35.
knocking hell out of each other but you will see everyone in a different | :48:36. | :48:41.
mood when the whistle goes. That's right, they do not eat other about | :48:42. | :48:45.
but there is also a respect and humour. Without doubt. The players | :48:46. | :48:55.
playing today require what -- know what is required, but after the | :48:56. | :49:00.
match, there are a lot of friendships out of the game, it's | :49:01. | :49:05.
great to watch. With all of your knowledge and history of the game, | :49:06. | :49:15.
what have you made this tournament? It's been a fantastic tournament, | :49:16. | :49:18.
great advert for the game. It's been terrifically supported. Where the | :49:19. | :49:20.
game has really caught the imagination is lower down the these | :49:21. | :49:27.
levels, the USA, cook islands, Fiji, Tonga, Italy, great nations coming | :49:28. | :49:33.
through, where the game is now being played. It brought a little romance | :49:34. | :49:40.
to the tournament. The best one I have seen and I've seen the lot. | :49:41. | :49:45.
Now, those teams who have started to come through, they need to continue | :49:46. | :49:50.
to be encouraged and invited to play international fixtures. | :49:51. | :49:55.
International sport is the be all and end all of any sport. We have | :49:56. | :50:00.
home Nations rugby union, athletics with the Olympic Games, and rugby | :50:01. | :50:07.
league really has got to get back to the days when it was fit and strong | :50:08. | :50:12.
at international level. We have to get an Ashes series, a Lions tour. | :50:13. | :50:19.
My greatest memories were playing for England and Great Britain | :50:20. | :50:22.
against Australia, against New Zealand, playing against the | :50:23. | :50:24.
different nations is a fantastic thing, the pinnacle for any | :50:25. | :50:29.
sportsman or sportswoman. The more chances you get to do that in rugby | :50:30. | :50:36.
league, the better. I would agree, out of all of us who have played at | :50:37. | :50:39.
international level, the reason we got into playing sport in the first | :50:40. | :50:42.
place was to present our countries. It wasn't to become a professional | :50:43. | :50:48.
sportsman, you had to do that to represent your country. As a kid, I | :50:49. | :50:53.
ramble watching the international games, growing up, so it's great, I | :50:54. | :51:00.
hope the tournament has inspired a few young kids to get out there and | :51:01. | :51:06.
play for England, in the next series or whatever tournaments are coming | :51:07. | :51:11.
up. That was I wanted to do. And we all listened to you! Showing my age! | :51:12. | :51:18.
Anyway, you have media, marketing and sponsorship and that of is what | :51:19. | :51:24.
the game is about off the pitch. International sport brings those | :51:25. | :51:27.
three. Club rugby can only take it so far. We need to go on another | :51:28. | :51:37.
level. Who will win this? Australia, New Zealand looked overawed, you | :51:38. | :51:40.
wouldn't believe they were the world champions. They have let the | :51:41. | :51:45.
Australians do what they want with them. I am disappointed, they spoke | :51:46. | :51:51.
about in disciplined but you do need that passion and that emotion. When | :51:52. | :51:58.
he says passion, somebody upfront news to smack somebody. -- needs to. | :51:59. | :52:05.
Let's go back to our commentators. How about that throwaway line, this | :52:06. | :52:15.
is the best will I have seen, and I've seen the light! Second half on | :52:16. | :52:22.
the way, is the green and gold steam roller going to carry on inexorably | :52:23. | :52:29.
towards the world title? The one they have been denied since the year | :52:30. | :52:32.
2000, when they won it on this ground. They are winning the kicking | :52:33. | :52:39.
game, they are winning on the ground, they need to pick their | :52:40. | :52:42.
intensity up, New Zealand. If they don't score next, this game is over. | :52:43. | :52:49.
Australia have played it terrifically efficiently so far, | :52:50. | :52:52.
they have done exactly what needs to be done. But New Zealand have to | :52:53. | :52:56.
find a way of upsetting their rhythm. | :52:57. | :53:05.
And Billy Slater is loving this World Cup final! All the bad | :53:06. | :53:14.
memories disappear as a second try for Billy the kid, right from the | :53:15. | :53:19.
start of the second half, Australia stamp their authority on the game | :53:20. | :53:26.
again. Somebody mentioned it in the studio, saying the Kiwis look | :53:27. | :53:32.
overawed, and it's true. This is the first in an Slater axis, -- | :53:33. | :53:41.
Thurston. Boyd to Slater on the inside, that is just the smartness | :53:42. | :53:46.
of that Queens land access down the left-hand side. Leaving a mark on | :53:47. | :53:53.
the floor, I think it was Shaun Johnson, left down there. That's | :53:54. | :54:02.
maybe why they are a number down. Again, Australia exploited it of the | :54:03. | :54:11.
numbers. We know that New Zealand can raise it on the big occasion, | :54:12. | :54:16.
the question is, how much did last week take out of them as of today? I | :54:17. | :54:22.
think it did. I mentioned it at the top of the show, it was a brutal | :54:23. | :54:25.
game last week, and absolutely fabulous game but physically, so | :54:26. | :54:32.
demanding. Our question over Australia was whether they would be | :54:33. | :54:38.
underdone, they are clearly not. They are so clinical, they spot | :54:39. | :54:43.
opportunities. Then they just execute them full | :54:44. | :55:11.
They go down the short side, he is isolated on his own, no centre | :55:12. | :55:20.
there. Billy Slater makes the extra number, brilliant awareness. | :55:21. | :55:27.
Half-time team talks may be written off but I wonder what they did say | :55:28. | :55:32.
at half-time. The New Zealand one was, get control of the tackles, | :55:33. | :55:39.
slow down the play. That didn't look like it was coming into play, | :55:40. | :55:45.
Australia said they had to match the intensity of New Zealand, they were | :55:46. | :55:49.
expecting them to come at them hard. Run hard, tackle hard and that will | :55:50. | :55:50.
do the business. It is not played out, the referee | :55:51. | :56:32.
says, so New Zealand are allowed position. They need something to go | :56:33. | :56:38.
their way. Just a spark of inspiration to bring this game back. | :56:39. | :56:46.
They have to score a minimum of four tries to win this World Cup, New | :56:47. | :56:53.
Zealand. And they need to not have Australia score again. Great tackle, | :56:54. | :56:56.
great tackle. I have been very disappointed with | :56:57. | :57:10.
the Kiwi forward, last week against England, England took it to them and | :57:11. | :57:15.
they responded. Today it hasn't happened. Foran put it high, Slater | :57:16. | :57:23.
went higher still. The thing about the Aussies, they will not stop, | :57:24. | :57:28.
they will go to the final whistle. They will look at opportunities and | :57:29. | :57:31.
when they come, they will finish you off. | :57:32. | :58:07.
There is confusion among the New Zealand defenders, the ball luckily | :58:08. | :58:12.
from their point of view has gone backwards and Foran is the one who | :58:13. | :58:17.
took it safely enough. There is your theory about kicking to Vatuvei, but | :58:18. | :58:22.
I disagree with this, we have looked at the Kiwis's previous shape, what | :58:23. | :58:28.
they have forgotten to do is run and play it out from the back. It is | :58:29. | :58:34.
easy for the Australian defenders to flood into the New Zealand line. | :58:35. | :58:42.
Look at that chase, the pressure is on. Not a bad kick in the | :58:43. | :58:50.
circumstances from Johnson. When you are down like that committee need | :58:51. | :58:56.
more than that from your set. Self-doubt, maybe? But that's the | :58:57. | :59:04.
element of the Test match, last week England and New Zealand, the | :59:05. | :59:08.
microscope is on you, that is why they are called test matches. They | :59:09. | :59:17.
will test you. It is clearly a strategy, a lot of green and gold | :59:18. | :59:21.
jumpers through on Vatuvei. Every part of your facet as a player is | :59:22. | :59:27.
tested against Australia. They have just done the simple things a lot | :59:28. | :59:29.
better. Terrific character, Cameron Smith. | :59:30. | :59:44.
Australia, moving ominously towards the halfway line again. | :59:45. | :59:51.
Making their mark in this game. History is being rewritten. It's a | :59:52. | :00:00.
World Cup that's moving back to Australia. | :00:01. | :00:22.
But the tackle is good. That is a good tackle. They have really | :00:23. | :00:32.
targeted Kieran Foran and Johnson. They have tested them. Slater does | :00:33. | :00:44.
not look fit! A really important point made by Tim Sheens before the | :00:45. | :00:51.
game. Billy Slater, he is not just a wonderful player with a ball in his | :00:52. | :00:55.
hand, he is not just a wonderful defender, he coaches his team. I | :00:56. | :01:03.
think especially in this squad the fullback can see everything. He is | :01:04. | :01:09.
the pair of eyes for the whole team. He can push and pull players off | :01:10. | :01:15.
sensibly and defensively. He can alter the kicking game. That is why | :01:16. | :01:20.
he is the best fullback in the world. He does those little extra | :01:21. | :01:29.
things. Australia for the time being penned inside their own 20. But not | :01:30. | :01:40.
for long. Some Friday looks as if he is difficult to tackle. He is a | :01:41. | :01:46.
fabulous player. Bash Sam Thaiday. They are being suffocated in rugby | :01:47. | :02:14.
league terms, New Zealand. You have not seen the forward taking the ball | :02:15. | :02:18.
in. Sonny Bill Williams is trying his best. He is getting to the first | :02:19. | :02:28.
receiver. He has off-loaded accidentally and that was stolen | :02:29. | :02:34.
from him. The penalty goes his way. Can they set up a car? Can they get | :02:35. | :02:41.
a toehold back in this game? The need for themselves. They needed a | :02:42. | :02:50.
result, they needed a penalty. They have got field position. Run first, | :02:51. | :02:58.
do not worry about your shape and your structure. Put a dent in the | :02:59. | :03:06.
line. The Canterbury prop. It is another big fellow, Hargreaves. But | :03:07. | :03:13.
Australia are tough on defence as well. Isaac Luke is running it and | :03:14. | :03:22.
having a go. But they are covered in green and gold. Kevin looked at | :03:23. | :03:32.
options on the outside, but it has gone on the inside. Mannering, it | :03:33. | :03:37.
has gone close, but not close enough. | :03:38. | :03:51.
Again not quite the contact you would have wanted. Again he is the | :03:52. | :04:00.
only kicker, said the pressure the Australians put on him, the quality | :04:01. | :04:06.
of the kick is not good enough. They needed to get good field position | :04:07. | :04:12.
and bang it out. I think Kevin Loche has two come in and help him a bit. | :04:13. | :04:18.
He is not doing enough. There is far too much pressure on Johnson. | :04:19. | :04:49.
But he is hurt. He collided with the advertising hoardings. This was a | :04:50. | :05:02.
concern before the game began. There was an urgency amongst Australia to | :05:03. | :05:05.
get padding around the edge of the picture. Brett Morris hit that | :05:06. | :05:15.
hoarding at some pace. In the meantime, is this a try or not? | :05:16. | :05:20.
Offside or on-site being the question. -- onside. | :05:21. | :05:41.
REFEREE: Just run it through now. I am happy with that. The ball is | :05:42. | :05:54.
tapped and everyone is on site. Go to the grounding. The ball is in the | :05:55. | :06:07.
air, his hands are on the ball and he brings it down to the ground | :06:08. | :06:21.
cleanly and it will be a try. Very often he gets ignored, but he | :06:22. | :06:30.
can finish, Brett Morris. There are a few doubts as to who is going to | :06:31. | :06:36.
be lifting that trophy at the end of the day. They spot the overlap and | :06:37. | :06:45.
there is a magical off-loaded. There he goes, the winger comes in. He | :06:46. | :06:50.
knows he is not going to make it. There is the kick. Tap, kick, try. | :06:51. | :06:57.
They do the basics exceptionally well. Oh, dear. It is all right you | :06:58. | :07:10.
laughing, he hurt himself. He is all right now. Jon Wilkin has thoughts | :07:11. | :07:19.
on the sidelines. If you look at the Australian team it suffocates the | :07:20. | :07:23.
opposition. It tightens its grip on the opposition. That is what they | :07:24. | :07:29.
are doing now. They are suffocating their opposition. That is why they | :07:30. | :07:33.
are at the world's best rugby league team. What animal was he talking | :07:34. | :07:45.
about? A boa constrictor. Do they get many of them in Saint Helens? | :07:46. | :07:53.
There might be a few in Hull. I thought it was a rugby league World | :07:54. | :08:02.
Cup final, not animal magic? There he goes again, six out of six. 28 | :08:03. | :08:15.
for Australia. Not unexpected, really. Great skill from Josh | :08:16. | :08:25.
Papalii. It is the understanding of the situation. Morris kicks and | :08:26. | :08:31.
there is support from the inside and support from the outside. It is | :08:32. | :08:37.
going to take something of a rugby league miracle for New Zealand to | :08:38. | :08:44.
find their way back. There is a lot of time and the Aussies will not | :08:45. | :08:50.
stop. Plenty of sparkle and shine still to come. The doctor is saying | :08:51. | :08:59.
Brett Morris were live, but they are not happy. They say he took the | :09:00. | :09:05.
brickwork out and they say it is not good enough, the in-goal area. | :09:06. | :09:12.
They said they were concerned before because of the tightness of the area | :09:13. | :09:14.
at Old Trafford. Morris was a cross to make the | :09:15. | :09:41.
tackle. Pride to be restored, that is the first requirement from the | :09:42. | :09:46.
side in black. They are trying to make this a contest. They have never | :09:47. | :09:51.
been in this contest since the first Billy Slater try in the 20th minute. | :09:52. | :10:09.
Greg Bird is a good player. He put his arms around his neck like a boa | :10:10. | :10:11.
constrictor! A lovely little touch by Sonny Bill | :10:12. | :10:30.
Williams. We have not seen too much of him in this final. The | :10:31. | :10:37.
Australians making sure that the New Zealand team have had little to say | :10:38. | :10:39.
in this contest. Australia's line is holding strong, | :10:40. | :11:00.
and they have one more tackle to complete. That was Myles too deep | :11:01. | :11:12.
and it is New Zealand's turn this time to be trapped in that area and | :11:13. | :11:24.
find a bit of pain. That is Vatuvei. The kick was a bit too far. Again | :11:25. | :11:35.
the execution of the final tackle. Oh, that is nasty. The kick was a | :11:36. | :11:46.
bit too far. We have seen Grand Finals and the players skidding out | :11:47. | :11:51.
of the area and into the hardest trough beyond. I wondered this is | :11:52. | :11:58.
something the legal authorities might want to pick up on. | :11:59. | :12:36.
Australia efficiently and inexorably moving inside the news island half | :12:37. | :12:45.
again. What the inside support. They know he is going wide and he is | :12:46. | :12:52.
going to make the inside kick and they will pick it up. They have just | :12:53. | :13:02.
got methodical. Go forward, go forward, a little bit of space and | :13:03. | :13:17.
kick. I have got Robbie Farah with me, is it just about seeing this | :13:18. | :13:27.
game out? Yes, we have just got to shut them out and not let them | :13:28. | :13:32.
score. In the last five games we have shown we are the best defensive | :13:33. | :13:39.
side in this competition. You are allowed to celebrate now. Yes, five | :13:40. | :13:46.
years ago and tonight and we are going to celebrate tonight. Six | :13:47. | :13:54.
hours and 20 minutes since they last conceded a try. Josh Charnley in the | :13:55. | :14:04.
opening game at England was the last time Australia's line was breached. | :14:05. | :14:10.
They conceded a penalty against Fiji and a penalty against New Zealand. | :14:11. | :14:24.
They are absolutely cutting them to pieces. It is not just a question of | :14:25. | :14:33.
physicality, but it is psychology now. I thought New Zealand would | :14:34. | :14:39.
struggle in the last 20 minutes after last week's effort against | :14:40. | :14:46.
England. But the Aussies have shown us the prowess in game management | :14:47. | :14:53.
and how to play the game. The Kiwis struggled for the first 60 minutes, | :14:54. | :14:58.
so this last 20 minutes might be tough for them. There is no going | :14:59. | :15:12.
forward. It is very easy for the Australian defence. They have | :15:13. | :15:15.
totally dominated the tackle area today. They are going to come | :15:16. | :15:22.
inside, the touchline is there. Total domination. Look at the | :15:23. | :15:42.
statistics. Tackle completion, 97%! The Kiwis are leading that. | :15:43. | :15:47.
Australia come forward again. A crunching effort. By Sam Cash | :15:48. | :16:23.
Arnot. But Australia, poised just at the moment. It came off the shins of | :16:24. | :16:30.
Darren Boyd. Sam, you have to play against these | :16:31. | :16:39.
boys week in, week out, how impressed have you been? They have | :16:40. | :16:47.
been very good, very clinical. I have been very impressed with | :16:48. | :16:51.
Cameron Smith and Thurston, the game is getting in front of them a little | :16:52. | :16:56.
bit, they are staying very composed and clinical in taking chances. | :16:57. | :17:18.
He has knocked on. A very difficult ball to take, though. That's the | :17:19. | :17:43.
first time they have really put pressure on Billy Slater. | :17:44. | :17:55.
They are having a look at it. The referee has offered this to the | :17:56. | :18:06.
video referee just to make sure. Knock-on to Australia. Comes off | :18:07. | :18:19.
Billy Slater's hands. Ten metres away from that Australian line. | :18:20. | :18:26.
Pressure on the Aussies, they will not want to concede a try. | :18:27. | :18:42.
A cluster of defenders around Bromwich, puts him on his act. The | :18:43. | :18:48.
Aussie defensive line is ready again. | :18:49. | :18:55.
It is a desperate kick in the end. It will bounce back into the hands | :18:56. | :19:46.
of Billy Slater, the Australian defensive line has done its job | :19:47. | :19:52.
again. This is sensational defence from the Australians, it's one of | :19:53. | :19:56.
the best individually offensive outfits there is in world rugby, | :19:57. | :20:01.
with the off-loading prowess they possess, say you have to take your | :20:02. | :20:09.
hat 's off to the Australian team. It's not only defensively, they have | :20:10. | :20:14.
done everything so clinical, just getting the ball away, the kicking | :20:15. | :20:18.
game, the options, when they take the ball up. It's just been a | :20:19. | :20:26.
brilliant, brilliant performance. The game may be a bit flat and it's | :20:27. | :20:30.
because they have absolutely dominated everything. It has been a | :20:31. | :20:35.
tournament of a million memorable moments. One of the greatest games | :20:36. | :20:41.
of all time last weekend at Wembley, England against New | :20:42. | :20:44.
Zealand. We fat heretics from Italy and the USA. -- we have had heroics. | :20:45. | :20:51.
But the masterclass has been left for them very last game. This is how | :20:52. | :20:59.
you play rugby league! The opportunity was created by very | :21:00. | :21:13.
slick hands, and there was a man over. | :21:14. | :21:52.
Straight to an Australian, nobody with him. That just says it all. No | :21:53. | :22:17.
one is running with him. They want another six, they get | :22:18. | :22:59.
another six. The referee says it was touched by a New Zealand player. So | :23:00. | :23:00.
the set starts from here. Solid, straight up the middle. You | :23:01. | :23:16.
can tackle me if you want but there's going to be a big effort on | :23:17. | :23:18.
your behalf! Let's have a look. You can't do | :23:19. | :23:34.
that. New Zealand, looking to create | :23:35. | :23:56.
something. He can see how close he is to the | :23:57. | :25:01.
line, Jarryd Hayne. Straight into the hands of Isaac | :25:02. | :25:25.
Luke! Very nearly gave it back again. | :25:26. | :25:38.
I think last weekend has taken quite a bit of a toll on New Zealand. They | :25:39. | :25:47.
haven't given you a sniff today, have they? One or two errors all | :25:48. | :25:54.
game, we have made a fair few more than that. They have been well | :25:55. | :25:57.
disciplined, haven't given us many penalties, it is disappointing it | :25:58. | :26:01.
wasn't the spectacle it could have been. But Australia have stuck to | :26:02. | :26:07.
their game plan and played really well. | :26:08. | :26:14.
He has given it away, here comes Jarryd Hayne! | :26:15. | :26:20.
That was a great tackle, a try saving tackle, had to be made. I | :26:21. | :26:28.
think he has hurt himself, as well. It's hard to undersell how good a | :26:29. | :26:50.
performance this has been from Australia today. It's not in the | :26:51. | :26:57.
absolute classic we craved today but we consider back and per at how well | :26:58. | :27:01.
the Australians have played. Five years ago there was talk about | :27:02. | :27:11.
that Australian line-up as being the best ever. That kind of talk hasn't | :27:12. | :27:15.
really resurfaced this time around. Billy Slater has knocked that on in | :27:16. | :27:22.
full flight. In his dotage, when they say, do you | :27:23. | :27:53.
remember that World Cup final? He has won to smile about. He might | :27:54. | :28:03.
still sneak a hat-trick. He is looking to get the hat-trick. | :28:04. | :28:11.
New Zealand want to break this Australian resistance. The green and | :28:12. | :28:19.
gold are fuelled by the pride that they do not give tries away. Still | :28:20. | :28:28.
they come in impressive numbers in defence. There is not a gap to be | :28:29. | :28:29.
had so far. Given it away, Jarryd Hayne runs | :28:30. | :28:43.
away from the defence! And Morris will cap it all off. | :28:44. | :28:56.
Australia, the world champions again. His brace! Australia have | :28:57. | :29:04.
simply been superb. Sonny Bill Williams has tried | :29:05. | :29:22.
everything, there is nobody who has played better for New Zealand, he | :29:23. | :29:26.
throws the miracle pass, it's intercepted, but the support play | :29:27. | :29:31.
from the winner is William. He has done everything, Sonny Bill. He | :29:32. | :29:38.
tries to releases outside backs, I think it is foreign leaders and | :29:39. | :29:46.
find. Just try to get the one opportunity, a great run from all | :29:47. | :29:51.
the Kiwi cover backs, but he is too quick for them there. That is great | :29:52. | :30:02.
of the ball support will stop --. Jarryd Hayne 's's World Cup five | :30:03. | :30:11.
years ago was as a Fijian. A lot of people say that was the making of | :30:12. | :30:14.
him on and off the field, that World Cup. His kicking four goal has been | :30:15. | :30:33.
perfect today. He collects himself. Never any | :30:34. | :30:51.
pressure on his kicking at all. Seven out of seven, 14 points | :30:52. | :30:57.
personally. As the sun sets over this fantastic rugby league World | :30:58. | :31:02.
Cup it is another huge crowd that sees us off. 74,468 at Old Trafford. | :31:03. | :31:12.
It is a world record rugby league international attendance. Australia | :31:13. | :31:27.
and New Zealand on foreign soil. DAVIES: As you said, a fantastic | :31:28. | :31:39.
performance. All they have to do now is go for this next five and a half | :31:40. | :31:45.
minutes without conceding a try. The man of the match is Johnathan | :31:46. | :31:55.
Thurston. It could have been a number of people. The Australian | :31:56. | :31:58.
hand off. John Wilkin, what are you saying? | :31:59. | :32:19.
The Australian performance has been exceptional. The spine of the team | :32:20. | :32:25.
have controlled the ball well, as you see here from Johnathan | :32:26. | :32:29.
Thurston. They gave direction to the Australian side. I have never seen a | :32:30. | :32:40.
side defend with desperation. But they are still defending with that | :32:41. | :32:44.
intensity. A truly impressive display from the world champions. | :32:45. | :33:02.
Four and a half minutes. Some warhorses in that picture. Some of | :33:03. | :33:07.
them have been there and done that. Cameron Smith and Greg Bird and Paul | :33:08. | :33:17.
Gallen and Johnathan Thurston. The Queensland and New South Wales | :33:18. | :33:21.
fixtures every year are probably the toughest rugby league football on | :33:22. | :33:22.
the planet. Tim Sheens is winning the cup back | :33:23. | :33:46.
today as the Australian coach. It is not often you get a smile out of | :33:47. | :33:54.
him. I think Kieran Foran has played well. Look where they are kicking | :33:55. | :34:03.
from, just inside the halfway line. That is not an attacking kick. Billy | :34:04. | :34:14.
Slater is not fit. Good defensive work by the New | :34:15. | :34:39.
Zealand skipper. He has lost that. A moment of glory | :34:40. | :35:06.
for Grant Atkins in the World Cup final. He drew the referee's | :35:07. | :35:14.
attention to the moment. Two minutes for Australia to hang onto this | :35:15. | :35:19.
record, consecutive games without conceding a try. It is an amazing | :35:20. | :35:28.
feeling to be this far in front and two enjoyed the match. How often do | :35:29. | :35:33.
you get to enjoy a momentous occasion like this? They have been | :35:34. | :35:37.
enjoying the last 15 minutes I think! And they are not letting up | :35:38. | :35:44.
at all with the intensity in defence. They are desperate to | :35:45. | :35:52.
maintain busy road tries. Even in the first line of six it showed what | :35:53. | :36:00.
they meant today. Their line speed was intense. Their defensive line | :36:01. | :36:02.
speed is brilliant. They will have another set to | :36:03. | :36:22.
defend. New Zealand have a set of six. That is good player as well. He | :36:23. | :36:36.
just patted it into touch. Knowing that his team-mates know how to | :36:37. | :36:41.
tackle! I do not think there is going to be time for the full set of | :36:42. | :36:48.
six. They might get for Mac tackles in that most here. That they might | :36:49. | :36:54.
get for tackles in. Sonny Bill Williams knocked that on | :36:55. | :37:17.
and that might be the end of it. The Australians congratulate each other. | :37:18. | :37:22.
It is a question of running down the clock. The referee is not going to | :37:23. | :37:30.
stop it. New Zealand are not bothered. Now the hooter sounds on | :37:31. | :37:35.
Australian redemption. They got their world crown back again and | :37:36. | :37:40.
deservedly so. Underneath the radar for much of this World Cup | :37:41. | :37:46.
tournament. Tested by England in the very first game, but since then | :37:47. | :37:50.
their dominance has been total, including in this final. They are | :37:51. | :38:01.
winners by 32-2. They bossed every facet of play. I thought they would | :38:02. | :38:05.
struggle against the bigger New Zealand pack. But they trusted in | :38:06. | :38:12.
the simple things. I thought there'd kicking was immense. With Smith, | :38:13. | :38:18.
Cronk and Thurston they did not know who to close down. When the chances | :38:19. | :38:24.
came they took them. I have not seen such a one-sided performance for a | :38:25. | :38:30.
long time. What a time to pull it out of the bag. A fantastic team | :38:31. | :38:34.
effort. Thoroughly deserved winners, Australia. But desolation from New | :38:35. | :38:42.
Zealand. Let's hear from the winning coach, Tim Sheens who is with Tanya. | :38:43. | :38:49.
Congratulations, how proud are you of this team? Extremely proud. We | :38:50. | :38:56.
came out in front of a great crowd and I thought we performed really | :38:57. | :39:02.
well. Our defence was great and our attitude was perfect. | :39:03. | :39:08.
Congratulations to New Zealand. They pushed us to the foreword by their | :39:09. | :39:15.
game. Even at the end you did not want to concede a try. We did not | :39:16. | :39:20.
start the game thinking that, but by 20 minutes to go we thought of that | :39:21. | :39:26.
and to their credit they dug in. You have achieved so much in your | :39:27. | :39:30.
career, but what does it mean to coach this site to be world | :39:31. | :39:35.
champions? I have not had a chance to think about it yet, but it is a | :39:36. | :39:41.
great privilege. Did you dream of this or why you so focused on the | :39:42. | :39:46.
tournament? You do not count on anything until the siren goes, but | :39:47. | :39:52.
we are very pleased and relieved. I know you said five years ago was | :39:53. | :39:59.
history, but it is nice to call yourselves world champions again, | :40:00. | :40:08.
isn't it? Sure it is. He makes his way back off to his celebrating | :40:09. | :40:12.
players. It was a comprehensive win for Australia. 34-2. You have to go | :40:13. | :40:19.
back to that first game against England for the last time a side | :40:20. | :40:25.
scored a try against them, which is a phenomenal record. Yes, and great | :40:26. | :40:34.
for the team. It is a cracking result. People might say it is a | :40:35. | :40:43.
great challenge, but they still had to defend the line. They performed | :40:44. | :40:48.
very well today. People might say New Zealand were off their game, but | :40:49. | :40:54.
the Aussies did that to them. The man of the match is with Tanya. | :40:55. | :41:00.
Congratulations on a man of the match performance and you are a | :41:01. | :41:05.
world champion. Thank you, it is a dream come true. It has been a long | :41:06. | :41:10.
six weeks. To win a World Cup with your best mates does not get any | :41:11. | :41:16.
better. It was an incredible performance, you looked so focused. | :41:17. | :41:22.
We have been building towards it and that was our main focus, to be here | :41:23. | :41:28.
at the end in the World Cup. Every week we kept on improving and our | :41:29. | :41:32.
defence was rock solid and that is what we build our game on. You said | :41:33. | :41:39.
before this match would not define you as players, but if you could | :41:40. | :41:43.
look each other in the eyes, you would be happy. You can do that! | :41:44. | :41:50.
Yes, it is a dream come true. We have worked so hard as a team. To be | :41:51. | :41:55.
here at the end and to win the World Cup with your best mate does not get | :41:56. | :42:01.
any better. What is tonight going to be like? It is going to be a big few | :42:02. | :42:20.
days, but I cannot wait to get home to my fiance and my little girl and | :42:21. | :42:23.
my mum and dad. I want to give a shout out to our family back home. | :42:24. | :42:26.
One of our young boys passed away earlier this year. This one is for | :42:27. | :42:29.
you, look. We thought it was going to be one night of celebration. As | :42:30. | :42:32.
he said, it is going to be a big few days. Let's hear from the runners | :42:33. | :42:38.
up. Stephen Kearney is with Tanya. Stephen, commiserations, but the | :42:39. | :42:45.
best team won today. Yes, I thought Australia's performance today was | :42:46. | :42:48.
outstanding. They were ruthless today. For us we did not have an | :42:49. | :42:55.
opportunity and we needed things to go our way and none of it happened | :42:56. | :43:02.
today. I thought Australia's performance was outstanding. They | :43:03. | :43:04.
saved their very best for this performance. We just could not match | :43:05. | :43:12.
them today. They did not give you a sniff in the 80 minutes. Absolutely. | :43:13. | :43:18.
They were ruthless, they did everything right. Their kicker | :43:19. | :43:23.
finishes were outstanding and they were very good today. How do you | :43:24. | :43:28.
reflect on the tournament as a whole? You have had some young stars | :43:29. | :43:35.
come through. Yes, we are very disappointed today, but we are a | :43:36. | :43:39.
young side. As you mentioned, there is some great young talent coming | :43:40. | :43:44.
through. It is a matter that we learn from this experience and get | :43:45. | :43:48.
better for next time. Thank you for your time. Everything is being set | :43:49. | :43:55.
up and the trophy presentation will be very shortly on BBC One after | :43:56. | :44:02.
Australia's very comprehensive win over New Zealand. Jamie, we spoke | :44:03. | :44:07.
about the kicking game pre-match, we spoke about the 2008 final. The | :44:08. | :44:13.
Aussies came out with a purpose because of that final and Billy | :44:14. | :44:16.
Slater in particular, given what happened to him in 2008. I think the | :44:17. | :44:25.
Australians had intent. I thought Slater was outstanding. I can | :44:26. | :44:32.
imagine he was not 100% fit, but some people can play. That is the | :44:33. | :44:42.
strength of a true professional. It is the strength of a true | :44:43. | :44:47.
professional. You could put that tried down to Queensland. These are | :44:48. | :44:51.
all Queensland players and they exploit the space that New Zealand | :44:52. | :44:58.
lacked in enthusiasm and energy. Some of that was sucked away by the | :44:59. | :45:02.
fact they lost possession. I thought Australia were outstanding. They | :45:03. | :45:07.
played very well and stopped New Zealand from playing. The Aussies | :45:08. | :45:17.
playing so clean takes the juice out of them. How do you beat a big | :45:18. | :45:26.
site? You start them of possession. Australia had the perfect game. I | :45:27. | :45:32.
also think it is a credit to the English team in the week before. | :45:33. | :45:37.
They were down on energy and the Australians were ruthless in what | :45:38. | :45:42.
they did over the full 80 minutes. It was exemplified in the last five | :45:43. | :45:48.
minutes. They would not give them anything. They were rushing around. | :45:49. | :45:59.
Were New Zealand overawed? I do not think they were over awed. They were | :46:00. | :46:03.
hoping to get that emotional energy behind them and to lift themselves. | :46:04. | :46:08.
But it was going to be a tough day at the office and it certainly was | :46:09. | :46:13.
for the Kiwis. Sonny Bill Williams is hurting in every way. Yes, a lot | :46:14. | :46:24.
of these boys start this event in 2012 and the effort and the training | :46:25. | :46:28.
and the sacrifice with food, and to get to this stage is amazing. There | :46:29. | :46:34.
is a lot more than 80 minutes that goes into tonight's game. The | :46:35. | :46:50.
Australians have got a wonderful back line. It is a fantastic ball | :46:51. | :47:00.
things go for you like that. When you are in possession and you are | :47:01. | :47:04.
doing the little things right, things come off for you. The ball is | :47:05. | :47:10.
going his way and it looks quite pretty. He did well to get up from | :47:11. | :47:18.
that and score a second. I think he was playing to the camera a little | :47:19. | :47:25.
bit. The boys still put their bodies on the line. They do that week in, | :47:26. | :47:36.
week out. And it is a good example of Australia. They poured number is | :47:37. | :47:43.
in. That was a good example. A little small, sniff of an | :47:44. | :47:47.
opportunity. Be ruthless and finish with a try. The few chances that New | :47:48. | :47:54.
Zealand had this afternoon they did not finish them off and that is the | :47:55. | :48:00.
difference between the two teams. What will this mean for New Zealand | :48:01. | :48:05.
rugby league? Before the match we spoke about the fact there is not an | :48:06. | :48:10.
inferiority complex because of what happened in 2008. Does New Zealand | :48:11. | :48:17.
now feel they can go head-to-head with the Australians? They do not | :48:18. | :48:20.
have to come into every game as the underdog. But this is a shock to | :48:21. | :48:34.
them today. I think every time you experience anything like that it is | :48:35. | :48:37.
a lesson learned. Sometimes it is a hard lesson learned, but it is a | :48:38. | :48:45.
lesson learned. Maybe they needed to say, we need to lift our intensity | :48:46. | :48:50.
in the early round and do a bit more physical work. Then see if they can | :48:51. | :48:56.
get the balance a bit better going into the semifinals and finals | :48:57. | :49:05.
itself. It is a unique experience. Referees are going up to get their | :49:06. | :49:09.
medals and there is no booing, there is a smattering of applause. As we | :49:10. | :49:14.
get ready to see New Zealand coming up and pick up their runners-up | :49:15. | :49:17.
medals, what does this say to England? From an English point of | :49:18. | :49:23.
view it shows how good you have to be to beat Australia. We were good | :49:24. | :49:35.
in that game, but way of our best. If we had been any good in that | :49:36. | :49:41.
game, we would have got through. There are three dominant nations. It | :49:42. | :49:48.
is safe to say now you can throw in England into that brief and on the | :49:49. | :49:57.
day we can beat anyone. Hopefully in the next World Cup England are in | :49:58. | :50:05.
the final dance. For me for New Zealand and England they are very | :50:06. | :50:09.
young teams and they can grow. I do not think the Australian players, | :50:10. | :50:15.
some of them, will make the 2017 World Cup. There is a belief amongst | :50:16. | :50:19.
the English that they can mix with the best. As Sonny Bill Williams | :50:20. | :50:30.
gets word of commiserations. We have reached the moment of that World Cup | :50:31. | :50:35.
being lifted by the winning team of 2013, the Australians. It attracted | :50:36. | :50:45.
they have been playing for form another 60 years. | :50:46. | :50:51.
It is Australia who get their hands on the trophy again, for the 10th | :50:52. | :51:03.
time. It has been a World Cup campaign that has been built on | :51:04. | :51:08.
defence. Now once again, they have a to defend. They have been simply | :51:09. | :51:13.
outstanding, today and through the tournament. They knew what they had | :51:14. | :51:25.
to do, it was just a question of keeping fit and raising the levels | :51:26. | :51:29.
for the finals. Today's performance was ruined. They closed the Kiwis | :51:30. | :51:36.
down, did the basics well. Any opportunities that came, they took | :51:37. | :51:40.
them. A quite magnificent team performance. Probably the last time | :51:41. | :51:46.
we see some of these players on English soil? People talk about | :51:47. | :51:52.
privilege but we have seen some of the best rugby players on the | :51:53. | :51:55.
planet. They have been clinical today, they have shown the | :51:56. | :52:01.
breathtaking ease, and their skills as well. World-class players, you | :52:02. | :52:09.
can look throughout the team. There is a pressure on Tim Sheens similar | :52:10. | :52:18.
to that if you were the Brazilian football manager. Every match, you | :52:19. | :52:25.
are expected to win. They'll do their job. The forwards run straight | :52:26. | :52:30.
and hard, get into field position. Then the generals, Thurston, Smith, | :52:31. | :52:37.
Cameron, then you have Brett Morris finishing things. A winning medal | :52:38. | :52:45.
for Cameron Smith. Calling up the rest of the squad, those who haven't | :52:46. | :53:01.
featured today. Cameron Smith lifts it! Australia, world-class and world | :53:02. | :53:03.
champions again! The fireworks go off and the | :53:04. | :53:18.
champagne is being sprayed. What a sight that is. Australia will | :53:19. | :53:23.
celebrate for days to come. They have been a credit throughout | :53:24. | :53:41.
the tournament, the Australians. Very professional. A great team | :53:42. | :53:47.
performance, ruthless. They have been exceptional throughout the | :53:48. | :53:51.
performance. They have come out with the best performance in the final. | :53:52. | :53:58.
We are out of time. We wished you a successful season and can't wait to | :53:59. | :54:02.
see you in an English shirt again. Thanks for being with us, Sam and | :54:03. | :54:10.
thank you both as well. Love to work with you both as well! We will see | :54:11. | :54:14.
you for the Challenge Cup coverage in April. If you want to see more | :54:15. | :54:19.
rugby, you can on the BBC. So after six weeks, we have arrived | :54:20. | :54:39.
at Australia, as convincing world champions. We have that excitement, | :54:40. | :54:44.
disappointment, the odd clown behind the window, Cheers, tears, and what | :54:45. | :54:52.
we have more than ever is people discovering and loving rugby league. | :54:53. | :54:55. |
