Storms coming in from Tonga.
Batten down the hatches. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:55
There is going to be flying debris
everywhere. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:01
Welcome to week three of the Rugby
League World Cup and what a game we | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
have in store as co-hosts New
Zealand face Tonga earlier today in | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Hamilton. We have extended
highlights of that, plus Scotland | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
versus Samoa as group B reaches its
conclusion. Joining me like a bunch | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
of giddy schoolboys are former
Scotland international Andrew | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
Henderson, England's Jon Wilkin and

into. This is how group B looks at
the start of the day with New | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Zealand and Tonga winning their
first two matches, the top three go | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
through to the quarterfinals but
with a first-place finish offering a | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
safe passage through the knockout
stages there was plenty at stake. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:52

the tournament eight Tongan players

COMMENTATOR: It is going to be a
wonderful game. We have been waiting | 0:02:12 | 0:02:18
for this game for a long time and
it's here. Tonga and Samoa, it has | 0:02:18 | 0:02:26
gone up a gear here in Hamilton.
Almost set for the start. Mannering | 0:02:26 | 0:02:35
has returned. The team is captained
by Adam Blair. Tonga have made a | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
late change with Michael Jennings
ruled out with a hamstring injury. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Mahe Fonua comes in on the wing.
Fusitu'a comes in. Hurrell returns. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:50
The captain is Sika Manu. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
HAKA. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08 | |
CHEERING | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
CHEERING | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Stunning. Taumalolo would love to
score against his former team here | 0:03:59 | 0:04:08
to open the scoring. What a fairy
tale that would be. Another penalty. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:14
Discipline hampering New Zealand
early in this game. Yeah. Just too | 0:04:14 | 0:04:24
long, looking at the referee, the
man asked to get off the player and | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
Tonga are about to take the two.
Good idea, points on the board. They | 0:04:29 | 0:04:35
need some sort of reward for the
effort put in here. And it is a | 0:04:35 | 0:04:41
penalty goal opening the scoring. It
is 2-0. Solomona. Konrad Hurrell and | 0:04:41 | 0:04:54
the bouncy castle of Asofa-Solomona.
Waerea-Hargreaves. Great battle so | 0:04:54 | 0:05:04
far between him and Taumalolo. Levi.
And now Blair. Lovely purse. There | 0:05:04 | 0:05:14
is the opening try and it is a
stunner down the left edge. They | 0:05:14 | 0:05:20
catch Tonga napping. They come down
the short side. Nice work by the | 0:05:20 | 0:05:30
captain. He gets them on the
outside, good footwork and gets them | 0:05:30 | 0:05:36
in a scorer is a media try for The
Kiwis. Taumalolo passes the ball, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:44
good hands from Tonga. Fonua in
space. Mahe Fonua. That was an | 0:05:44 | 0:05:49
excellent shift of the ball out left
from Tonga. The speed of the pass | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
was excellent. That is an important
tackle made by Mannering, really | 0:05:54 | 0:06:00
helping the momentum.
Watene-Zelezniak almost got mixed | 0:06:00 | 0:06:07
up. Here he goes again, RTS. RTS,
after a pretty sketchy catch under | 0:06:07 | 0:06:25
his posts makes 40 plus metres. This
is Nikorima. The footwork continues. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:32
Delivers Scheck again outstanding.
Here is Russell Packer. That is | 0:06:32 | 0:06:41
excellent from Russell Packer. 15
metre gain for New Zealand, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:48
straightaway on the left edge,
looking strong on the left side, New | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Zealand. Nikorima, Mannering.
Watene-Zelezniak, we have already | 0:06:51 | 0:06:59
seen a try in that manner in this
game. Blair. Short pass and | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
wonderful off-load to Johnson. Try
to Jordan Rapana. It is 8-2. Look at | 0:07:03 | 0:07:15
this, coming out wide, beautiful
off-loads, second phase, and a | 0:07:15 | 0:07:22
drive. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
It doesn't matter how it goes over,
it is if it goes over. It is 10-2. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:36
The back three of New Zealand has
been perfect. Absolutely top shelf. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:42
Watene-Zelezniak, Rapana and to give
us a Scheck. Tonga need something. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:50
Asofa-Solomona again goes high, and
gets away with that one. Tevita | 0:07:50 | 0:07:57
Pangai Jr. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Greyhounds. Fonua! | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
Is | 0:08:09 | 0:08:09 | |
Daniel Tupou finishing of their
highest order. But it is a forward | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
pass. Please! This was brilliant
from Daniel Tupou, and was that the | 0:08:18 | 0:08:27
fraud one? This one definitely
wasn't. Mbemba finish. My word. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:32
Johnson, nice hands. Here goes Isaac
Liu. Eight points is the margin, two | 0:08:32 | 0:08:42
tackles left in this half as Levi
shuffles it out. The big body. P | 0:08:42 | 0:08:51
off-loads. He runs through the gap
as wide as the Grand Canyon. He will | 0:08:51 | 0:09:05
be the subject of the video referee.
REFEREE: We go back to the head on, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:12
the arms have come away. He cleared
the tackle, the ball off the ground | 0:09:12 | 0:09:17
and then we have grounding. What a
killer blow this could be in the | 0:09:17 | 0:09:23
context of this game. There is the
try to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. 14-2. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
That is a damaging blow for Tonga.
The Dry is converted and it is | 0:09:28 | 0:09:38
half-time at Waikato Stadium in
Hamilton and New Zealand lead Tonga | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
16-2 -- the try. Pangai Jr. Manu.
Sika Manu, the captain. Havili. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:53
Again they come out from the backs.
Hurrell. Good tackle. Hurrell was | 0:09:53 | 0:10:04
putting the hip in to it. No
question. Check out the length of | 0:10:04 | 0:10:10
the pass, Fusitu'a. Robust coming
into midfield here. Havili. Pangai | 0:10:10 | 0:10:20
Jr again. Serious heat on the New
Zealand lines. Tonga starting the | 0:10:20 | 0:10:30
second half as they did the first
but they couldn't score a try, they | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
hung on. Beautifully taken. What a
try. David Fusitu'a. Every Tongan | 0:10:33 | 0:10:49
fan is standing and waving their
flags. Brilliant work, Fusitu'a, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:57
6-foot four inches, up he goes,
above were Telly Zelezny coup | 0:10:57 | 0:11:04
doesn't attempt to catch the
football. Beautiful work. Two dries | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
for New Zealand last year and now
playing for Tonga. Good carry from | 0:11:09 | 0:11:18
Hurrell. Can they turn this position
into more points? Tonga need to be | 0:11:18 | 0:11:23
the next scorers. Perhaps Taumalolo
will set it up. What they ball | 0:11:23 | 0:11:34
carrier he is. Good front foot
running ball here. Adam Blair in the | 0:11:34 | 0:11:43
tackle this time. Carrying a couple
of Kiwis to within five metres of | 0:11:43 | 0:11:53
the line. Havili. On the last play,
he looks indecisive. Hurrell on the | 0:11:53 | 0:12:06
back foot and he brings in Fusitu'a!
Absolutely brilliant! David | 0:12:06 | 0:12:15
Fusitu'a, look at them, they can't
get enough of him. His second try | 0:12:15 | 0:12:20
for Tonga brings this game alive, if
it wasn't already alive in the | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
second spell. Lolohea. Nobody in
front of him and he decides to go | 0:12:23 | 0:12:30
backwards and finds Conrad who drops
off the flicked ball and finds a | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
hole between Adam Blair and to live
as a Scheck and into the crowd. Game | 0:12:33 | 0:12:40
on, 16-10. -- Tuivasa-Sheck. No
upright connection that time and we | 0:12:40 | 0:12:51
are back to a four point game. Many
thought the last 20 in this match | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
would be one-way traffic with Tonga
out on their feet. Some of the Kiwi | 0:12:55 | 0:13:01
forwards just getting onside. Tackle
three. 19 minutes to play. What a | 0:13:01 | 0:13:08
wonderful conclusion we have got to
this game. The next scorer could | 0:13:08 | 0:13:16
well win it. Leuluai whack out
there. -- back out there. Rapana | 0:13:16 | 0:13:25
will play-the-ball. Leuluai almost
caught on the hop. No way! Lolohea! | 0:13:25 | 0:13:34
Tonga! This is extraordinary. They
went to sleep. The play-the-ball | 0:13:34 | 0:13:45
nobody wanted to deliver and then
the long pass wide seas the thief in | 0:13:45 | 0:13:51
Tuimoala Lolohea. Here is Lolohea
with the steel and the try, 16-16 | 0:13:51 | 0:14:02
with the kick to come. So, Tonga hit
the front 18-16. And we have 17 | 0:14:02 | 0:14:14
minutes to play. Wow, this is going
to be a stunning finish. It is a | 0:14:14 | 0:14:23
good carry. Tonga making very good
metres into The Kiwis' half from the | 0:14:23 | 0:14:31
kick-off. Here comes Masila. Murdoch
Masila is through. There is going to | 0:14:31 | 0:14:40
be another try. Hopoate. What
scenes. 20 unanswered points in the | 0:14:40 | 0:14:57
second half and New Zealand are
facing a real test now. This was the | 0:14:57 | 0:15:07
damaging play, they shift it and
away they go, the one-on-one myths, | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
good pace, and your full-back is
exactly where you want him. 22-16, | 0:15:11 | 0:15:17
Tonga on fire. He nails it for the
8-point lead. 1995, Tonga led by 12 | 0:15:17 | 0:15:28
points in the last ten for New
Zealand to claw back but this is | 0:15:28 | 0:15:34
different. Leuluai with the fast
play-the-ball, Blair passes it. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:43
Excellent tackling from Tonga. Now
Solomona again. Two tackles left in | 0:15:43 | 0:15:51
this set. Leuluai. Johnson. The
Tongan defence rushes up again. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:59
Nikorima takes on the line, Nikorima
off-loads it nicely. Here is a | 0:15:59 | 0:16:04
chance coming back infield. Roger
Tuivasa-Sheck. Check out their hands | 0:16:04 | 0:16:10
from Asofa-Solomona. There is space
on the right. Tuivasa-Sheck! He is | 0:16:10 | 0:16:16
there! Much longer in this game,
folks! Tuivasa-Sheck scores his | 0:16:16 | 0:16:26
second try. Have a look at this,
they shift it here, little skip and | 0:16:26 | 0:16:32
a hop and across the front, Roger
touches it there. And watch his | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
work, out the back it goes. I
thought he just had to run to the | 0:16:37 | 0:16:42
right but he spied a gap inside and
somehow finds the line. His second. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:49
What they setup we have here. Tonga
24-22 New Zealand with seven minutes | 0:16:49 | 0:16:54
to play. Four minutes to go. Fonua.
Great run. Mahe Fonua. Not | 0:16:54 | 0:17:05
originally listed to play this game
but has done a great job in Michael | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
Jennings' absence. The dummy half
will do the trick for Tonga. Soaking | 0:17:08 | 0:17:13
up the time on the clock. Taumalolo,
great run. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:20
They are in field goal range if that
might be of interest to them. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
Eight metres now Tuimoala Lolohea.
Not a bad option. Last play. Here go | 0:17:33 | 0:17:46
Tonga with one last crack at the
line, oh, they've done it! Fusitu'a | 0:17:46 | 0:17:53
has got it. Fusitu'a with three
tries and Tonga, oh, what a day for | 0:17:53 | 0:18:01
them. Well, they won't stop cheering
here in Hamilton. It will be like | 0:18:01 | 0:18:07
this for the next hour. A nice
little hit and spin which creates a | 0:18:07 | 0:18:15
bit of attention from Dallin
Watene-Zelezniak and Fusitu'a goes | 0:18:15 | 0:18:24
through. , 28-22 New | 0:18:24 | 0:18:29
Watene-Zelezniak and Fusitu'a goes
through. , 28-22 New Zealand. I'm | 0:18:29 | 0:18:29
lost for words right now. When you
come from a liberal nation and | 0:18:29 | 0:18:34
although I did not grow up and
Tonga, parents are there and I'm | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
very proud of where I'm from. Yeah,
it's a great feeling. Pretty special | 0:18:38 | 0:18:44
and emotional. The fans, I guess,
making issue and I get a lot of | 0:18:44 | 0:18:51
people doubted us as well,
especially going in at half-time, so | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
to come back and score the points
that we did and win the match, yeah, | 0:18:54 | 0:18:59
it's incredible and amazing. I think
we let ourselves down in discipline. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
We have been really good through the
tournament and tonight I think we | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
gave away too many penalties. You
can't do that against a side like | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
Tonev who took it to us and the band
were outstanding, give them credit. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
When you have a look around at the
sea of red, what is going through | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
your mind? It is crazy, man, I look
up there and sometimes, I'm singing | 0:19:18 | 0:19:23
along unconsciously, you know, the
passion they have for our little | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
nation. It is a believable. Momentum
is a powerful thing and so is | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
believed, the belief after doing
this, creating history for Tonga? | 0:19:30 | 0:19:34
Massive belief now, beating a
world-class outfit like New Zealand, | 0:19:34 | 0:19:39
it's only going to give the boys a
massive boost and confidence going | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
into next week. A lot has been said
in the last few weeks, especially | 0:19:42 | 0:19:48
leading into the game but we said at
half-time that we still have 40 | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
minutes to play and the boys came
out and done exactly that. That just | 0:19:51 | 0:19:56
shows the true character, what the
boys are about. To be honest, what | 0:19:56 | 0:20:04
they are as a team and a country.
Obviously very disappointed with the | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
result but you know, we will worry
about doing the video on that | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
tomorrow and the following day. At
the moment, you've got to give a lot | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
of respect to Tonga. It is
outstanding. I'm just really proud | 0:20:14 | 0:20:20
of these blokes. They've made a lot
of people proud since the day they | 0:20:20 | 0:20:25
got together and the day the blokes
made a decision to play for Tonga. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
It was obvious from the day we
turned up, how proud people were of | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
them. They've just continue to make
people proud ever since. That effort | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
out there was outstanding.
Obviously, a real step up from last | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
week and the game then. They
continue to find something. I could | 0:20:41 | 0:20:49
not be any prouder. Rob Lee, I know
it did not go the way you were | 0:20:49 | 0:20:55
hoping it would but what a game,
what a special game and special | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
occasion. Special occasion, Hamilton
has a massive, it's not that far | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
from South Auckland, where there is
a huge Tonev population and in | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
Hamilton itself, that is where they
have the temple and the Mormon | 0:21:05 | 0:21:10
church so a huge population, so the
obvious place to play it. You could | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
see the sea of red and black in the
stands going hand-in-hand, wonderful | 0:21:13 | 0:21:18
atmosphere, you could be on the TV.
Have you ever seen a haka like that? | 0:21:18 | 0:21:24
Both their challenges, you have the
New Zealand haka and Lee Tomlin one. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:30
You can just see the energy. -- and
the Tongan one. The energy was | 0:21:30 | 0:21:35
coming from the stands,
Asofa-Solomona going head to head | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
with Andrew Fifita, there, which is
a bit naughty, they should not be | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
touching each other, the respect is
in the line but I think it shows the | 0:21:41 | 0:21:45
passion of what was going to happen
in the game and they did not let us | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
down, hugely emotional drive from
Tonga during that game. Emotion is | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
one big thing but I thought
performance was what one the day and | 0:21:53 | 0:21:57
ultimately, Tonga produced a
performance. There was a lot of | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
emotion at the start but in big,
emotional games like that, it is who | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
settles down and plays well and
ultimately, Tonga played better than | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
the Kiwis on the day which is why
they got the result. That it was | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
going to be physical war they given
but were you surprised that the | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
exceptional skill levels and
handling on both sides? It was a | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
great occasion, the World Cup has
truly come alive after that game | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
today. Tonga, you've got to give
them a massive amount of credit will | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
stop they were 16-2 down at
half-time. New Zealand had a lot of | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
say in the first half but to come
back and scored 26 points in the | 0:22:27 | 0:22:33
second half against a decent New
Zealand side is fantastic for them. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
It has put the cat amongst the
pigeons. They were so emotional, you | 0:22:36 | 0:22:41
could tell from the interviews, at
the end, incredible scenes at the | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
end of the game. Is there any danger
that Tonga will feel like they've | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
almost won the World Cup now? In
fairness, it was a concern, we saw | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
some pictures at the end of the
game, Jason Taumalolo kneeling on | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
the ground, it might be a family
member with him, tears pouring down | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
his cheeks. Lots of emotional energy
went into this game because as we | 0:22:59 | 0:23:04
knew before the start of the game,
eight players withdrew from the New | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
Zealand selection to make themselves
available for Tonga. They have come | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
under a lot of criticism in New
Zealand and from the New Zealand and | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
Australian media. All of these
players have had that riding on | 0:23:13 | 0:23:18
their back. To achieve success
against one of the big three teams | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
and doing it in such fashion, where
they overpowered the team with | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
individual brilliance in a lot of
places, you look at how they've | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
played the game, 86% completion rate
also, that is just a performance to | 0:23:29 | 0:23:34
be proud. Yeah, International rugby
is about performance, statistically | 0:23:34 | 0:23:39
in this game, the Kiwis let
themselves down, completed but made | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
a lot of errors and conceded a lot
of penalties which read into the | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
powerful Tonga pack who really took
the game and Jason Taumalolo, for | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
those who don't know, is probably
the best forward in world rugby | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
league at the moment, there's nobody
like him. He is quick as an outside | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
back with footwork and strong and
has minutes in the middle of the | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
field for Tonga, exceptional. David
Fusitu'a got a hat-trick but some of | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
the build-up play | 0:24:04 | 0:24:05
Fusitu'a got a hat-trick but some of
the build-up play to the tries was | 0:24:05 | 0:24:05
exceptional. Some of the skills on
display were outstanding. As you can | 0:24:05 | 0:24:11
see, fantastic kick into the corner
and that is some catch. Outstretched | 0:24:11 | 0:24:15
like that, to take the ball in the
air is a believable. And the next | 0:24:15 | 0:24:20
try, changing direction, a bit off
the cuff, to be honest, but some | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
poor inside defence from New
Zealand. The Kiwis will be annoyed | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
with that. Yes because they had no
right to score the try, they just | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
chased to write and even close to
the line, the winger comes in and | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
makes a poor decision to do so, and
again, conceding a soft try in the | 0:24:35 | 0:24:40
end. Some areas for New Zealand to
fix but I don't think they will be | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
disheartened by that of the weekend. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:45
fix but I don't think they will be
disheartened by that of the weekend. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:46
They will learn from it and
potentially we will see a response | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
in the next game. There's a lot of
growth left in New Zealand, Adam | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
Blair was talking about the
discipline which is not just about | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
giving away penalties but also
controlling the ball. Russell Packer | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
in the front row gives a cutout
pass, Tuimoala Lolohea gets the | 0:24:59 | 0:25:05
intercept which starts the rot for
New Zealand. The emotional | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
atmosphere of the game itself and
Tonga made it a tough day at the | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
office but I think New Zealand will
grow. But it throws the tournament | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
wide open because we cannot have in
Australia and New Zealand final. And | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
I think that he two players dropping
back or choosing to play for Tonga, | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
I think it's made this tournament
for me, made it interesting and now | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
we go into the quarterfinals and the
tee top-seeded teams going into the | 0:25:28 | 0:25:32
tournament are split up so the big
challenge, maybe what we will talk | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
about in the future is who England
will have to play down the line | 0:25:35 | 0:25:42
because they will have to possibly
play Tonga. But the tournament comes | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
to life now going into the
quarterfinals. It was quite some | 0:25:44 | 0:25:46
game. So far Scotland have had a
World Cup to forget with two heavy | 0:25:46 | 0:25:50
defeats to Tonga and New Zealand but
a win against Samoa could still see | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
them into the quarterfinals.
However, it is not just on the pitch | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
where their campaign has gone awry
with three players including | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
influential captain Danny Brough
sent home last week for misconduct. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03

Cup returns to Cairns in far North
Queens and for a winner take all | 0:26:15 | 0:26:16
group B match, Samoa against
Scotland. One of these teams will go | 0:26:16 | 0:26:20
on to the quarterfinals. The other
goes home. Samoa, so much class in | 0:26:20 | 0:26:26
their but none more so than Joseph
Leilua, their centre, the strike | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
power out on the edge, used to go to
man today. For Scotland, they have | 0:26:30 | 0:26:36
been under pressure, the first two
games, their number six today, Danny | 0:26:36 | 0:26:43
Addy, is the key. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:44
Thomas. Danny Addy. Frankie Mariano.
The man from Featherstone. Inside | 0:26:46 | 0:26:56
the 20. Almost roaring a penalty.
Danny Addy with the chip kick and | 0:26:56 | 0:27:02
here comes Lewis Tierney! Making a
mess of it and Lewis Tierney gets it | 0:27:02 | 0:27:07
down and it looks like Scotland have
the first try. Slow from here, slow. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:14
Yes, that is good. I'm happy with
that. All good, thank you, mate, we | 0:27:14 | 0:27:19
are going to confirm the decision of
the drive. Greg Little play from | 0:27:19 | 0:27:24
Danny Addy on the last play, coming
over to the right edge and Lewis | 0:27:24 | 0:27:27
Tierney pushing up the middle,
Tonumaipea made an absolute meal of | 0:27:27 | 0:27:34
it, was not sure whether to pick it
up or not it dead. Poor error from | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
Young Tonumaipea. Let's see what
Samoa have in attack. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:46
Jarome Luai, did not run it much
last week but he can certainly run | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
the ball. Now, Joshua pop shrugged
off to including Danny Addy. | 0:27:54 | 0:28:01
Herman Ese'ese. Needed to be
stopped, Douglas and have another | 0:28:05 | 0:28:11
front rows involved. Openside, and a
powerful one, junior Paulao has -- | 0:28:11 | 0:28:19
Junior Paolo has crashed over, and
Samoa too big and too powerful. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:28
Samoa in for their first try. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
Shane Toal. From the Barrow Raiders
in the third tier of English | 0:28:34 | 0:28:42
football. Metres on offer. That has
been touched by Bunty Afoa and it is | 0:28:42 | 0:28:48
a penalty to Scotland. Pouring on a
little more pressure, countering | 0:28:48 | 0:28:56
well. Just trying to get in the arm
wrestle but at the moment, Scotland | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
are getting all the yardage. Not the
regular kicker, Danny Brough was | 0:29:00 | 0:29:06
their usual one. Not a bad strike.
Oh, it is a beauty. How could we | 0:29:06 | 0:29:13
doubt him? Scotland back in front,
8-6 as we approach the midway point | 0:29:13 | 0:29:17
of the first half. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:19
Thomas. Looking for Lachlan Stein.
Arm raised, last tackle, Bentley. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:37
Danny Addy can see the line in front
of him. REFEREE: Going to play the | 0:29:37 | 0:29:43
knock-on, on the last tackle. Out on
the ten metre line for a changeover. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:48
Scotland electing to run on the last
play again and Danny Addy stepping | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
off his right foot, saw some space
inside but unfortunately, the error | 0:29:51 | 0:29:56
and a sigh of relief for Samoa. My
goodness, the ball has been stolen | 0:29:56 | 0:30:00
by Mariano! This is going to be a
dry! -- try. It will lead inspection | 0:30:00 | 0:30:09
but it appears Timoteo Lafai tried
to release it. Tim Lafai is looking | 0:30:09 | 0:30:15
to pass and at this data does not
look like there is a touch between | 0:30:15 | 0:30:18
any other Scotland player and
Scotland have taken possession and | 0:30:18 | 0:30:21
if we follow through, can I get a
look at the grounding? And the ball | 0:30:21 | 0:30:28
is grounded, we have got a decision,
we are going to the board. Frankie | 0:30:28 | 0:30:34
Mariano puts them in front to 12-6.
Scotland on top. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:41
Oh, my goodness, a long pass, casual
take by Jarome Luai. Into the final | 0:30:41 | 0:30:49
two minutes of the first period.
There is a run by Brown, he's gets | 0:30:49 | 0:30:56
them open. Lewis Tierney chasing and
the pass has gone forward and Samoa | 0:30:56 | 0:31:05
butcher a dry with Pita Godinet.
Tossed up in the air and it was an | 0:31:05 | 0:31:10
instant call by the on field
referee. | 0:31:10 | 0:31:16
Thomas. Picks out Tim Lafai who has
been on the wing pretty much all | 0:31:18 | 0:31:25
afternoon and now he draws in two
defenders and sends his team-mates | 0:31:25 | 0:31:30
down the wing. Samoa will get a full
set inside Scottish territory. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:38
Paolo at first receiver. Brown. Lalo
would space, here's trouble, out it | 0:31:44 | 0:31:50
goes and Matthew Wright gets it
down. Samoa have their second and | 0:31:50 | 0:31:54
they are back in business. But we
will go upstairs. We are going to go | 0:31:54 | 0:32:01
slow, here, thanks, mate, slow,
slow, the ball is up. That is all | 0:32:01 | 0:32:05
good, we are going to confirm that
live decision and then we are going | 0:32:05 | 0:32:10
to the board. It had to be, that was
green all the way. Sensational | 0:32:10 | 0:32:16
put-down to make it a one school
game. -- one score game. Jarome | 0:32:16 | 0:32:25
Luai. Could not keep its footing but
on the next play, Tonumaipea goes | 0:32:25 | 0:32:34
straight through. They have tied it
up, Samoa and the kick is makeable. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:40
And they have a chance to take the
lead, their third try of the | 0:32:40 | 0:32:44
afternoon. Tonumaipea and Scotland
could not hang on any longer. It is | 0:32:44 | 0:32:51
14-14, with the kick from mid range.
Matthew Wright, B Breeze will take | 0:32:51 | 0:32:55
this again from left to right so the
angle will be closed. -- the breeze. | 0:32:55 | 0:33:02
Too much hook and the wind plays its
part. It is important to note that a | 0:33:02 | 0:33:12
draw favours Samoa. They have the
superior for and against. And a big | 0:33:12 | 0:33:17
moment in this game, a penalty, 40
metres out and Danny Addy landed one | 0:33:17 | 0:33:21
in a first half from around this
range. What a moment we have. That | 0:33:21 | 0:33:27
ball clearly raked out with more
than one in the tackle. He got one | 0:33:27 | 0:33:33
in at the southern end from 40
metres out and he would appear to | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
have the wind at his back ever so
slightly, to put Scotland back in | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
front. | 0:33:40 | 0:33:44
He pulled it, left edge, they get
the ball back. The chance slips, as | 0:33:45 | 0:33:52
so often, when players look for
distance, they tend to pull it. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:57
Danny Addy can kick them and so can
Thomas. Douglas, a powerful run, | 0:34:00 | 0:34:06
inside the 30, now. Here it comes,
Danny Addy. He wanted it. Pita | 0:34:06 | 0:34:12
Godinet rushed on him, Thomas, it is
low and just not far enough. That | 0:34:12 | 0:34:18
was so close. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
Bentley. Bell. Into the 40. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:31
Danny Addy, thought about it. Joseph
Paolo rushed up. Now the ball on. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:43
Darren Anderson. They have gone
sideways. Danny Addy is going to | 0:34:43 | 0:34:48
launch. He got the distance but he
has pulled it. And that might be | 0:34:48 | 0:34:54
their World Cup. He has hit the
cover off the ball but the wind | 0:34:54 | 0:35:00
takes it left and now a seven tackle
set for Samoa. If they hang onto it, | 0:35:00 | 0:35:06
they go to the quarterfinals. | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
Yet to have a draw in this
tournament, and we are 38 seconds | 0:35:14 | 0:35:18
away. It will be a split decision. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:23
Herman Ese'ese. Scotland have to get
this back somehow. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:35
Jarome Luai for Paulo. Nine seconds
left. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:47 | |
The final play, a deliberate kick
for touch. And Samoa are through to | 0:35:50 | 0:35:59
the World Cup quarterfinals. The
Braveheart lived up to their name | 0:35:59 | 0:36:04
and they were so close to causing a
monumental upset. Samoa progress | 0:36:04 | 0:36:10
without winning a game. Final score
14-14. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:17
without winning a game. Final score
14-14. A lot was made last year of | 0:36:17 | 0:36:19
the draw against New Zealand and,
you know, the effort in the Four | 0:36:19 | 0:36:23
Nations and the last World Cup and
that for me was in perspective one | 0:36:23 | 0:36:26
of the best performances Scotland
has had for a long time with regards | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
to effort. If you think about the
young squad we have got, the first | 0:36:29 | 0:36:34
couple of results we have had, the
resilience, the effort and the | 0:36:34 | 0:36:39
spirit, the skill, the desire that
this team showed, there, in every | 0:36:39 | 0:36:42
bit of adversity that you can have,
I don't think anybody could be | 0:36:42 | 0:36:46
prouder. We had a chance to win the
game and then another one with the | 0:36:46 | 0:36:51
drop goal but, yeah, we can be
proud, you know, obviously not proud | 0:36:51 | 0:36:56
of the first two games but proud of
sort of this performance. We owed it | 0:36:56 | 0:37:01
to ourselves and the fans that
everybody associated with Scotland. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:06
We are still alive, plenty to go,
we've had a really wonderful World | 0:37:06 | 0:37:09
Cup. We haven't probably played as
well is what we would have hoped but | 0:37:09 | 0:37:13
we are still in the competition.
We've got a game next week. You will | 0:37:13 | 0:37:20
see some of that Samoan pride and
passion in that game. But the blue | 0:37:20 | 0:37:24
they are a good side, Samoa, and
we've got guys in Championship one, | 0:37:24 | 0:37:29
and playing in Super League. We've
come together and we've really tried | 0:37:29 | 0:37:33
to leave the jersey in a better
position and I think we did tonight. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:38
This is how group B has ended up,
Tonga upsetting the odds to finish | 0:37:38 | 0:37:43
top spot with maximum points. New
Zealand have to make do with second | 0:37:43 | 0:37:48
place and Samoa edge out Scotland
for the final qualifying position on | 0:37:48 | 0:37:51
points difference. They can be very
proud, can't they, Scotland, after | 0:37:51 | 0:37:56
that? Absolutely and an extreme you
proud, too because they've gone into | 0:37:56 | 0:38:01
the World Cup under strength to
start with and then found themselves | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
even more understrength with the
departures last week. They've had a | 0:38:04 | 0:38:07
lot of disruption throughout the
campaign. It has been a | 0:38:07 | 0:38:10
disappointing campaign. And. But to
finish with that performance, they | 0:38:10 | 0:38:14
have really faced it head-on.
They've been unlucky, they competed | 0:38:14 | 0:38:23
high, they controlled the game, I
thought Danny Addy was very | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
influential. A missed penalty goal
40 metres out with eight minutes to | 0:38:26 | 0:38:31
go. It was a heck of an effort from
Danny Addy and as you say, he had a | 0:38:31 | 0:38:36
fantastic game. And two drop goal
attempt, Thomas just goes wide and | 0:38:36 | 0:38:39
Danny Addy as well, struck it really
well, probably a bit unlucky, | 0:38:39 | 0:38:44
Scotland, to not progress to the
quarterfinals after that. It was not | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
to be but they can be very browed of
their efforts. Danny Addy's drop | 0:38:47 | 0:38:51
goal was | 0:38:51 | 0:38:52
their efforts. Danny Addy's drop
goal was a long way out. It was a | 0:38:52 | 0:38:58
really good crack. It is not often
you go there and wonder how we | 0:38:58 | 0:39:01
missed it. It was not in an ideal
spot to start with but he hits it | 0:39:01 | 0:39:04
perfectly. The biggest challenges
the length on the kick and he does | 0:39:04 | 0:39:07
it and hit it straight, it is just a
couple of metres to the left of the | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
sticks. Danny Addy had a great game
and I think he really stepped up. | 0:39:10 | 0:39:14
When you lose the experience of
Danny Brough, and let's not talk | 0:39:14 | 0:39:18
around | 0:39:18 | 0:39:18
Danny Brough, and let's not talk
around this, it should have been | 0:39:18 | 0:39:19
Danny Brough taking that kick so
Danny Brough has probably let them | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
down by not being out there to kick
the ball. Would they have but that | 0:39:22 | 0:39:31
performance in if they had not had
the adversity of Danny Brough and | 0:39:31 | 0:39:34
the others sent home? We were
chatting about this and it could go | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
a couple of ways, especially the
captain in Danny Brough and that | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
could have a detrimental effect on
how the team played. It can | 0:39:39 | 0:39:41
galvanise you, help you find other
players who like the responsibility | 0:39:41 | 0:39:44
and want more. Danny Addy stepped up
and had a great game and took on | 0:39:44 | 0:39:48
some of that responsibility that
Danny Brough left. I believe | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
Scotland would always have had a
performance in the tournament and | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
they have had to come because the
last two games, they underperformed. | 0:39:54 | 0:39:58
With or without Danny Brough, the
forwards were immense. If you look | 0:39:58 | 0:40:02
at Samoa, they were not in the game
today. Their completion rate was | 0:40:02 | 0:40:07
something around 50, 55, 56%. But
when you have a team that you are | 0:40:07 | 0:40:13
playing against are keyed up and
they want the game, they can make | 0:40:13 | 0:40:16
you play that badly and I think it
was a mixture of them probably not | 0:40:16 | 0:40:20
being 100% in the game and thinking
Scotland have had all this | 0:40:20 | 0:40:23
adversity, they would easily win,
and Scotland turning up ready to | 0:40:23 | 0:40:26
play. | 0:40:26 | 0:40:27 | |
Sanogo into the quarterfinals
without winning a | 0:40:31 | 0:40:33
Sanogo into the quarterfinals
without winning a game in the | 0:40:33 | 0:40:34
groups, that is mad to think you can
go into the quarterfinals of the | 0:40:34 | 0:40:39
World Cup without winning. They have
scraped through. They have a big | 0:40:39 | 0:40:41
game coming up. They cannot play
that badly against Australia and | 0:40:41 | 0:40:47
expect to win. What next for
Scotland rugby league? Or do they | 0:40:47 | 0:40:51
need to do to build on this? A
couple of things. There needs to be | 0:40:51 | 0:40:55
predicted, if not just for Scotland,
Wales and Ireland, more money put | 0:40:55 | 0:40:59
into those nations which has to come
from the International Federation. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:03
They have to take it more seriously
and look for investment and also | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
some onus on the nations themselves.
I know they are not full-time | 0:41:06 | 0:41:12
employed but those volunteers will
have to go Above and Beyond try and | 0:41:12 | 0:41:15
generate income and resource to go
into those nations. Without the | 0:41:15 | 0:41:20
funds it's not going to grow. Are we
getting left behind in the northern | 0:41:20 | 0:41:25
hemisphere? I would say
traditionally, Tonga, Samoa, and | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
these second-tier teams they have
history and heritage with rugby | 0:41:28 | 0:41:35
league. Rugby league recruits all of
the power and punch and pace from | 0:41:35 | 0:41:38
these islands and there isn't much
of that coming from Scotland. We are | 0:41:38 | 0:41:42
not instinctively going to Scotland
to recruit rugby league players. It | 0:41:42 | 0:41:45
is a challenge but if this is the
way we are going we must invest in | 0:41:45 | 0:41:49
the second-tier nations and making
them work. A long way to go but we | 0:41:49 | 0:41:53
have had some cracking stuff | 0:41:53 | 0:41:54
them work. A long way to go but we
have had some cracking stuff and | 0:41:54 | 0:41:54
well done to Scotland today.
Confirmation of who plays who in the | 0:41:54 | 0:42:02

face some are. Tonga play the cyber
pernicious bird in England's group | 0:42:07 | 0:42:11
and New Zealand will take on Fiji
while the group of eight runners-up, | 0:42:11 | 0:42:16
currently England, played the group
C winners which will either the | 0:42:16 | 0:42:19
