The 2017 Rugby League World Cup has
reached the semifinal stage and this | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
weekend, four teams compete for a
place in next week's final in | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
Brisbane. Here is what lies in
store. Australia were expecting to | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
face New Zealand earlier today, but
Fiji's unprecedented 4-2 victory | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
over the Kiwis in the quarterfinals
meant they progressed to set up a | 0:00:56 | 0:01:02
repeat of the 2013 semifinal.
England defeated Papua New Guinea in | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
their quarterfinal, and tomorrow
faced Tonga in Auckland. Australia | 0:01:05 | 0:01:11
have looked imperious so far,
racking up 27 tries and conceding | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
only two. But Fiji put up a historic
defensive performance last week | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
against New Zealand, so can they do
it again against the world | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
champions? Your commentators for
this one are Mark Braybrook and Gary | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Belcher. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
COMMENTATOR: 32nd teams make their
way out to the centre of the stadium | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
-- the two teams. A big night,
especially for the Fijians, and they | 0:01:38 | 0:01:43
have plenty of support in the
stadium. One of the highlights has | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
been a cultural challenge of all
nations, but particularly the | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
Fijians. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:59
# hallelujah. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:27
They are lovely people, the Fijians,
and the passion with which they play | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
is reflected in the way they sing.
We have a player in the middle of | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
the ground getting some treatment
after that. It is an unchanged | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
line-up. A big night tonight for
Jarryd Hayne. Can Fiji, coached by | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
Mick Potter... Sorry, I have been
distracted. For the Australia side, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:59
Mal Meninga is the coach. It is
Jarryd Hayne, but he was the last | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
one out on the field. He has been in
the hands of the trainer, but I | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
think he's OK. He has been getting
some treatment, Gary Belcher. That | 0:03:07 | 0:03:16
is surprising. Here is an important
player for Fiji. He has been | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
fantastic in this tournament. Didn't
get the jersey early, but he was | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
great once again last week. Ashton
Sims, plays for the Brisbane | 0:03:24 | 0:03:32
Broncos. The countdown is on.
Cameron Smith gets us under way. At | 0:03:32 | 0:03:46
the end of 80 minutes, one of these
teams will be preparing for the | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
Rugby League World Cup final here on
Saturday week. The off-load from | 0:03:49 | 0:03:56
Sims to start again, a bit of Fijian
flare from the kick-off. Is that | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
what we are going to see tonight
from Fiji, to play a bit of | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05
different football and throw
something at the Australians? It is | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
something we have not seen from many
teams. This fellow, Uate, has been | 0:04:07 | 0:04:13
great. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:23
Hayne gets knocked over by Klemmer
after he kicks it. Under pressure, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:39
Slater. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:49
Now, Valentine Holmes under
pressure. Some strong defence here | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
from the Fijians. And a bit of push
and shove. Ashton Sims was involved. | 0:04:54 | 0:05:01
Slater over the top with a shoulder
charge. Ashton Sims has run from a | 0:05:01 | 0:05:08
mile away. There were hymns before
the game, but there is no patience | 0:05:08 | 0:05:18
shown here by the Fijians. Was there
any arm in that tackle? It looked | 0:05:18 | 0:05:25
like a shoulder charge. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:35
A good kick from Jarryd Hayne 's. It
is a good chase from Fiji. Valentine | 0:05:44 | 0:05:57
Holmes has lost the ball. Terrific
tackle. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:11
They took the penalty goal early
last week, and it was the | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
difference. Will they do it again
this week? | 0:06:28 | 0:06:39
A bit of a team meeting, but they
got there. I don't think there was | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
any doubt that they were going to
take it, maybe they were just trying | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
to get into the Aussies' minds. But
there doesn't seem to be any doubt, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
Gary, that the game plan from the
Fijians is to answer for the | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
Australians. There are the two
points. Fiji on the board first. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:06
Campbell-Gillard is coming on. Aaron
Woods is straight up the tunnel. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:14
They are playing with plenty of
vigour. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:25
He didn't lose that, I reckon he
tried to pass it. Jarryd Hayne came | 0:07:29 | 0:07:42
in as well. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:53
Campbell-Gillard has played a test
for Fiji, up against his cousin. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:11
Tulips with the ball. Why didn't he
go himself? It was a try format | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
julep, but he went to pass the ball
and it was an absolute shocker -- it | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
was a try format Gillett. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:26
Good shots from Cordner. Nothing
illegal about it. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:50
Inside the 40 can the Kangaroos.
Jarryd Hayne couldn't chase. Montoya | 0:08:51 | 0:09:04
under pressure. Billy Slater does
wonderful work bringing the football | 0:09:04 | 0:09:11
back. A few tackles later, Cooper
Cronk. An update from Aaron Woods? | 0:09:11 | 0:09:24
Good news on Aaron Woods. He will be
cleared to return. You don't want to | 0:09:24 | 0:09:30
get injured in the semifinal. Fiji
have taken forever here, and the | 0:09:30 | 0:09:37
referee is making no effort to hurry
them up. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:48
Campbell-Gillard turning his back
again, like Ashton Sims is doing on | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
the other side for Fiji. Here come
the Kangaroos, and Billy Slater | 0:09:57 | 0:10:09
scores. Vunivalu, what was he doing?
He slipped over and then it was six | 0:10:09 | 0:10:17
on one, and the Australians were
always going to score. They have | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22
come up ahead of the line, a couple
of defenders. He sneaks through that | 0:10:22 | 0:10:28
tackle and off-load star Billy
Slater. Good try. That is another | 0:10:28 | 0:10:38
two points for Australia and another
goal for Cameron Smith. Billy Slater | 0:10:38 | 0:10:51
gets try number 15, so he is now the
leading try scorer in World Cup | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
history. And he is the best
full-back this game has ever had. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:08
Certainly plenty of feeling and
physical stuff from the Fijians. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:20
And another penalty that gets
Australia out of its own end easily. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:27
There is Aaron Woods, back on the
bench. Good news for him and the | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
Kangaroos. They really need to tidy
that area up, Fiji. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:47
They are inside the 40 already. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:58
Smith again creating danger. Morgan
with the damage. -- with the dummy. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:16
Cooper Cronk takes the line on, but
they hold him a metre away from the | 0:12:16 | 0:12:22
goal line. Vunivalu misses it, and
Valentine Holmes, who got fired last | 0:12:22 | 0:12:34
week in Darwin, starts with a child
tonight. -- with H Common Travel | 0:12:34 | 0:12:40
Area. You just have to wait and see
if his opposite winger got hold of | 0:12:40 | 0:12:47
it -- Valentine Holmes starts with a
try tonight. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
He doesn't miss many, does he,
Cameron Smith? Straight as a gun | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
barrel. I am a bit worried here with
how the Fijian side are defending. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:08
It is two tries on the back of two
penalties, but when you watch how | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
much aggression on the defensive
line has, there is a lot of fear. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:19
Cameron Smith is once again
dominating the game. Fiji have not | 0:13:19 | 0:13:31
had the ball for a while. It is the
first time in some time that they | 0:13:31 | 0:13:36
have been able to get their hands on
the football. You don't often see a | 0:13:36 | 0:13:46
ball kicked in Vunivalu's direction
that he doesn't catch. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:58
There is an injury. Let's see how he
goes down. That is not a good twist. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:26
There is a resigned look on his
face. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:37 | |
McGuire's legs were chopped from
underneath him. Dugan back on the | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
angle. I think Josh Dugan has been
hurt. He fell awkwardly. Was it the | 0:15:13 | 0:15:23
ankle? Yep. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:37
Uate doesn't like the fact that he
was being held onto. The tackle | 0:16:10 | 0:16:20
count hasn't been restarted doesn't
have to be, and there is Valentine | 0:16:20 | 0:16:25
Holmes in again. Get himself a
double. Too many green and gold | 0:16:25 | 0:16:32
jerseys, not enough Fijian
defenders, and the Kangaroos get the | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
third. He couldn't dribble it
through, but taps it out wide. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:41
Klemmer does the right thing.
Straight into the hands of Valentine | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
Holmes. He strolls over. Fiji have
considered four penalties and | 0:16:45 | 0:16:52
Australia have scored three tries. | 0:16:52 | 0:17:03
Here is danger. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:15
Dugan seems to have recovered. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:32
Dugan almost burst out the other
side. Chambers gets inside Uate, and | 0:17:37 | 0:17:52
Chambers scores the try. In fact,
the other wing I guess the try. The | 0:17:52 | 0:18:05
long ball from Cronk is a ripper
gives him a lot of room to move. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:13
The difference between the
Australian side on the rest of the | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
World Cup squads is their class or
their ability to link passes at pace | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
and have the ball in front, which a
lot of the other sides get clunky in | 0:18:31 | 0:18:36
their attack. But as the weeks have
gone by, Australia have got more | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
clinical and there will be extremely
hard to stop. Fiji are on the | 0:18:40 | 0:18:51
attack. Can Fiji scored just the
third try against the Kangaroos in | 0:18:51 | 0:18:59
the whole World Cup? The first
coming after just five minutes of | 0:18:59 | 0:19:07
game one. There is a penalty. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:18
The Fiji chant goes up here at
Brisbane Stadium. Good, strong run | 0:19:22 | 0:19:33
by Nakubuwai. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:44
Milne tried to pass and loses it.
That was a poor set from Fiji. They | 0:19:57 | 0:20:08
had a couple of sets and six in that
20 metre zone and they haven't come | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
up with a good play on the end of
it. They haven't made the | 0:20:11 | 0:20:16
Australians pay at all. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:26
Cronk keeps it on the toe, a bounce
for Billy Slater. That went forward. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:45
That is a knock-on. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:55
REFEREE: just confirm that Billy
Slater gets a cut on that? Video ref | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
to director, nice and slow for me,
mate. That looks like Slater's hand | 0:21:01 | 0:21:07
inside. Would probably have to watch
that they do it faster, but Slater's | 0:21:07 | 0:21:11
hand appears to be inside the Fijian
defender. That is definitely Billy | 0:21:11 | 0:21:17
Slater's hand that touches the ball.
That makes it a knock-on. Billy | 0:21:17 | 0:21:28
Slater knew. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:34
Fiji are now putting their foot
down. Nakubuwai is inside the 20. | 0:21:52 | 0:22:07
Here is a chance for Fiji to start
the second half strongly. The | 0:22:07 | 0:22:15
intercept from Valentine Holmes. He
was over the halfway line. Uate is | 0:22:15 | 0:22:25
chasing, but Valentine Holmes, five
tries in Darwin and a hat-trick in | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
Brisbane! And he is not finished
yet, I don't think. A missed placed | 0:22:28 | 0:22:37
kick. A couple of tackles later,
they throw it wide. It was two on | 0:22:37 | 0:22:42
one, but they found the one athlete
who was defending, Valentine Holmes, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
and away he goes. Uate was just not
quick enough to prevent him from | 0:22:46 | 0:22:52
scoring under the post. The worst
possible start to the second half | 0:22:52 | 0:22:59
for Fiji. Let's head downstairs to
Brett. Well positioned here from Val | 0:22:59 | 0:23:11
Holmes. He plays for Cronulla
Sharks. I think he is an outstanding | 0:23:11 | 0:23:16
winger. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:26
Vunivalu drops it, and Valentine
Holmes was there. That sort of sums | 0:23:45 | 0:23:51
up the Fiji to a certain extent.
Koroisau and Hayne were getting in | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
each other's way. They haven't
sorted their kicking game out. They | 0:23:55 | 0:24:00
put OK kicks in in the first 15 or
20 minutes, but since then it has | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
been pretty sloppy. We heard that
Aaron Woods was OK. He is on the | 0:24:04 | 0:24:18
bench, but I would have thought he
might have come back by now. The | 0:24:18 | 0:24:27
Aussies have used three interchanges
in the first half. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:39
Frizell with the tackle. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:53
Aaron Woods went off some time ago.
Pales into insignificance now have | 0:24:57 | 0:25:06
to Valentine Holmes' performances. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:07
Great defence from Josh Dugan, just
forcing Vunivalu over the touchline. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:29
I reckon Billy Slater was happy. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:39
Putting the foot down, and Billy
Slater will race away and get the | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
Kangaroos' sixth try. From the scrum
win, Billy Slater did it all. At the | 0:25:45 | 0:25:53
moment, they are unstoppable. How
good is Billy Slater? 16 tries now, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:59
two more than any player ever in
World Cup history, both of those | 0:25:59 | 0:26:06
coming tonight. Slicing through the
outside defenders under away he | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
goes. No point in chasing, you are
not going to stop that man. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:20
When we look at the class of Slater,
punk and Smith, they arrived in 2003 | 0:26:26 | 0:26:31
and it has been unbelievable to see
how their careers have developed. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
Three April Fools' Day these three
players are once-in-a-lifetime | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
generation. -- these three are a
once-in-a-lifetime generation. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:52
Keeping it alive, the Kangaroos.
Here comes Cooper Cronk. How is he | 0:26:52 | 0:27:02
going to get out of there? There is
no way out. The chase was terrific. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:14
They get everything right because
they work so hard on their game. A | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
perfectly weighted kick by Smith.
Cronk and his team-mates arrived, | 0:27:18 | 0:27:24
and it was too late by then.
Campbell-Gillard, straight and hard. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:35
Bodies fly everywhere. And he gets
up and plays the footy. It might be | 0:27:35 | 0:27:44
34-2, but they are not being tested
much, the Kangaroos. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:52
Morgan hasn't seen much of the footy
of late. Here they go, towards | 0:28:10 | 0:28:15
Valentine Holmes, and don't tell me
he has got himself number four! | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
Views in again -- he is in again.
The clock keeps ticking. So does the | 0:28:18 | 0:28:28
try scoring record. Five last week,
four this week, and who is to say he | 0:28:28 | 0:28:32
can't get back to back five? I was
going to say the try scoring will | 0:28:32 | 0:28:45
continue to happen. It comes on the
back of the patients from the | 0:28:45 | 0:28:49
Australian side. They are quite
happy to kick and build pressure. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
And on the back of that fatigue, you
get the Fiji side making poor | 0:28:52 | 0:28:58
defensive choices, and Australia
rack up the scoreboard. Uate is | 0:28:58 | 0:29:02
through. Can he beat Slater? He
does, but he slows him down. Where | 0:29:02 | 0:29:09
is the support? Montoya arrives
late. Good run from Uate. And now | 0:29:09 | 0:29:18
injured in the tackle. That was a
determined effort. He was desperate | 0:29:18 | 0:29:24
to get through, and does. He is up
and OK. Here is a chance for Fiji. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:40
Picked up by Vunivalu, not sure how
he did. Did he get it down? | 0:29:40 | 0:29:57
OK, so you ask if Vunivalu maintains
possession cleanly? The tackle isn't | 0:29:57 | 0:30:04
complete at that point. Its
momentum, momentum. Maintains | 0:30:04 | 0:30:08
possession, its momentum. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:09
momentum, momentum. Maintains
possession, its momentum. Decision, | 0:30:09 | 0:30:10
try. A try to Fiji. The kangaroos
lead 42-6. They got caught in the | 0:30:10 | 0:30:24
wrong position there defensively.
It's the first try that Australia | 0:30:24 | 0:30:28
have conceded in their second-half
in their last few matches. England | 0:30:28 | 0:30:36
will be watching that they get ready
for a big occasion week. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:42
The tackle with Sims. A penalty. | 0:30:49 | 0:31:01
They will be attacking from inside
the 30, I think, the Kangaroos. Matt | 0:31:05 | 0:31:09
Gillette is back on the field. That
is a good kick from Smith. Graham. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:22
Where is Valentine Holmes? Can he
get five tries in consecutive weeks? | 0:31:22 | 0:31:28
McGuire, woods, almost spinning
through the tackle. They go to the | 0:31:28 | 0:31:38
side of Holmes. Holmes is out there.
Were he pass? He does and Valentines | 0:31:38 | 0:31:45
Holmes gets five tries in a test
match two weeks in a row. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:52
Unbelievable. We will never see this
again, surely? Dougan does his job | 0:31:52 | 0:31:59
beautifully. Can't get there
himself. Smith from near the | 0:31:59 | 0:32:04
touchline. It's going to come back
and add another two points to | 0:32:04 | 0:32:08
Cameron Smith's tally. It was
suggested and it had happened. Five | 0:32:08 | 0:32:15
to Valentine Holmes. It's certainly
been where to watch what has gone on | 0:32:15 | 0:32:22
the last two weeks for Valentine
Holmes. Let's see him get six, | 0:32:22 | 0:32:28
Valentine Holmes. I don't mean that
disrespectfully to Fiji. But let's | 0:32:28 | 0:32:32
witness something we may never see
again. We certainly won't see in a | 0:32:32 | 0:32:38
test match, a player scored five
tries in consecutive test matches. I | 0:32:38 | 0:32:43
don't think we'll ever see a player
score five tries in a test match | 0:32:43 | 0:32:49
again. We'd never seen it before
last week. Yes, the previous one was | 0:32:49 | 0:32:55
Mel Malinga against the Roosters way
back when. Is he OK? He is. Naiqama | 0:32:55 | 0:33:12
loses it forward. Can he regather?
He does. He never looked like he was | 0:33:12 | 0:33:21
quite under that football, Naiqama.
At the disappointing way for Fiji to | 0:33:21 | 0:33:26
end the World Cup after such a
spirited performance throughout. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:30
They just haven't been good enough
tonight. Smith at the base of the | 0:33:30 | 0:33:36
scrum, Morgan, Slater, Gagai. He
goes himself. Did he get it down to | 0:33:36 | 0:33:43
get himself a double? He did. The
kangaroos have got nine, Dan Gagai | 0:33:43 | 0:33:49
has got to add on his outside,
Valentine Holmes has five still. He | 0:33:49 | 0:33:54
came from the other wing, Dane
Gagai, because most of the Aussie | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
action has been on the left tonight.
He just steps back inside Milne and | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
slices over. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
Naiqama, Milne, away from Morgan.
Still going. Clement is there. The | 0:34:12 | 0:34:19
off-load is a good one as well. And
here they go, Fiji. And they are | 0:34:19 | 0:34:27
over. No, they lose the ball,
Vunivalu. He was over the line and | 0:34:27 | 0:34:32
lost it. Now Gagai was almost away.
Vunivalu created something out of | 0:34:32 | 0:34:39
nothing then dropped it. Here they
go towards Valentine Holmes. Away he | 0:34:39 | 0:34:44
goes. He's going to get six. Naiqama
chasing and six of the best for | 0:34:44 | 0:34:50
Valentine Holmes. I've seen it but
I'm not sure I believe it. Try | 0:34:50 | 0:35:02
confirming grounding, touchline. OK,
so he is in at this point, he is | 0:35:02 | 0:35:10
clear of the touchline, still clear,
going to ground. Maintains | 0:35:10 | 0:35:14
possession. Decision going to the
board. Six tries in one game of | 0:35:14 | 0:35:20
rugby league and that game of rugby
league is a World Cup semifinal. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:25
Balanced tine homes -- Valentine
Holmes. At one end of the field, | 0:35:25 | 0:35:38
Vunivalu fails to hang onto it and
from that, we get this. Look at him | 0:35:38 | 0:35:44
go, a lot of work to do that with a
good chase by Naiqama. But he was | 0:35:44 | 0:35:48
going to get there. Six to Valentine
Holmes, two to Dan Gagai, to do | 0:35:48 | 0:35:56
Billy Slater. Surely in the history
of rugby league when a team has | 0:35:56 | 0:36:02
scored ten tries, they have never
been only three try scorers? We have | 0:36:02 | 0:36:07
to give a mention to the Kiwi great
Georgina guy who scored six in a | 0:36:07 | 0:36:12
test. And now here is Matt Gillett.
Looking for a try. Montoya slipped | 0:36:12 | 0:36:18
over. Now through the hands of
Cronk, Smith, can we get that then? | 0:36:18 | 0:36:29
The cake is on but it's too deep.
Through the hands and it might have | 0:36:29 | 0:36:33
been seven. He got the Man of the
Match for five tries last week. Was | 0:36:33 | 0:36:43
he good enough with six to get it
tonight? There have been some | 0:36:43 | 0:36:48
outstanding performances from the
Kangaroos. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:54
Since, off-load. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:08
15 short of halfway. Inside the
final minute of Vijay's time in the | 0:37:17 | 0:37:22
2017 Rugby League World Cup. Short
of halfway. Hain. Can they finish | 0:37:22 | 0:37:29
with something special? Something to
remember them by? They keep it | 0:37:29 | 0:37:35
alive. The day. Uate puts the foot
down but he stumbled as he came to | 0:37:35 | 0:37:47
Billy Slater and Slater made the
tackle. Pain, Sims, Milne. I don't | 0:37:47 | 0:37:54
think he was expecting it. It's near
the touchline and it's in touch. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:58
That would be just about it, you'd
think. Michael Potter gets up. | 0:37:58 | 0:38:05
Neither side will be that keen to
pack the scrum. There is the Cyrene. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:11
Australia is the root of the Rugby
League World Cup final with a | 0:38:11 | 0:38:15
comprehensive 54-6 win over Fiji. It
seems like the last two weeks, your | 0:38:15 | 0:38:24
completion rate has improved and
you've got your grief. Is that how | 0:38:24 | 0:38:28
you feel? I think so. The first
three weeks -- matches, we had a | 0:38:28 | 0:38:35
different line-up, different
positions, so it was always going to | 0:38:35 | 0:38:37
be a bit clunky. But with the Arab
plan, that everyone got a run in the | 0:38:37 | 0:38:43
first three matches, but we have
found continuity now and it seems to | 0:38:43 | 0:38:50
be working for us. There were a
couple of patches in the match where | 0:38:50 | 0:38:54
we lost our way a little bit but
overall I am really pleased with the | 0:38:54 | 0:38:58
way we have responded with our
attack. Completion rates have been | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
great, some nice direct that bought
at the moment. We just need to | 0:39:02 | 0:39:06
continue that. We completed
something like 85% which is our best | 0:39:06 | 0:39:11
completion rate so far this series
so I was very happy with that. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:18
Obviously we are probably a little
fatigued tonight of the back of | 0:39:18 | 0:39:23
Darwin, so that took its toll on the
players, I thought, from a 30 point | 0:39:23 | 0:39:27
of view. That's just my observation
from the box. But a big week coming | 0:39:27 | 0:39:35
up, we will make sure we freshen up
and get right for next week. The | 0:39:35 | 0:39:40
scoreline wasn't flattering. I
thought it got away from us really | 0:39:40 | 0:39:45
early. We were a little
disappointing their early on. It | 0:39:45 | 0:39:50
cost us field position and a lot of
points. You can't give Australia | 0:39:50 | 0:39:55
points and the opposition early and
the game just -- field position | 0:39:55 | 0:40:01
early and the game and away from us.
Australia made you work extremely | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
hard? Definitely. They don't miss a
beat and control the game so well. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:13
We tried to get them on a couple
about place but they were just too | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
good, too clinical and full credit
to them. It was a great opportunity | 0:40:17 | 0:40:22
for us to progress into the finals
but it's a tough assessment against | 0:40:22 | 0:40:26
Australia. We have really enjoyed
this campaign, this opportunity to | 0:40:26 | 0:40:30
play again. For Fiji rugby league,
it's great for us. We really felt | 0:40:30 | 0:40:35
the support for our tiny nation and
we just want to thank all the fans | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
for their support during this
tournament. Obviously it's an | 0:40:38 | 0:40:42
unbelievable team I'm playing in,
probably the best team I've ever | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
played in, some great players in
their so great for myself with the | 0:40:45 | 0:40:50
six tries. I'm enjoying the
tournament so far and very happy to | 0:40:50 | 0:40:54
have made the final now. I want to
relax and soak it all up and look | 0:40:54 | 0:40:58
forward to next week.
So, Australia advanced to next | 0:40:58 | 0:41:05
week's final and they will face the
winner of tomorrow's second final | 0:41:05 | 0:41:11
between -- second semifinal between
England and Tonga. Dave Woods has | 0:41:11 | 0:41:14
the latest from the England camp.
It's a win for England. At this | 0:41:14 | 0:41:20
stage of the tournament, it's not so
much about how you play but the | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
result at the end of it.
# It's not how you start | 0:41:23 | 0:41:30
# It's how you finish... You are
working on ball retention this week? | 0:41:30 | 0:41:37
We work on that every week. You are
a captain one week away from a | 0:41:37 | 0:41:43
final. How do you cope with the
excitement? We are excited but the | 0:41:43 | 0:41:48
boys are training, in the hotel. We
are excited about what is the brunt | 0:41:48 | 0:41:53
of us. My excitement levels are on
the up, only a view days out of a | 0:41:53 | 0:41:59
World Cup semifinal and the
opportunity to go to Brisbane and | 0:41:59 | 0:42:03
play off for the trophy, so it's
very exciting. There are a lot of | 0:42:03 | 0:42:08
English fans in town, a lot of
Tongans. It will be a terrific | 0:42:08 | 0:42:12
atmosphere? Most of these guys play
in England so if they have been to | 0:42:12 | 0:42:18
an English rugby league game,
English soccer, it's part of the | 0:42:18 | 0:42:24
package on the day so I don't think
it will worry them. It will be an | 0:42:24 | 0:42:27
immense atmosphere but it will be a
great game to be within. Tonga have | 0:42:27 | 0:42:36
got a lot of momentum at the moment,
so we know we have our hands full. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:43
But it's something we are looking
forward to immensely. Every game I | 0:42:43 | 0:42:47
have been a part of, I stick with a
velocity that it takes 80 minutes, | 0:42:47 | 0:42:51
sometimes 90 minutes to win a game
of rugby, so we have to be on every | 0:42:51 | 0:42:57
play, every moment. We are coming up
against some massive sites so this | 0:42:57 | 0:43:04
is huge. Where you are now, how does
that compare to the site you were at | 0:43:04 | 0:43:09
the beginning of the tournament? We
run the journey, last week execution | 0:43:09 | 0:43:15
let us down a little bit but
generally we are doing things | 0:43:15 | 0:43:19
better, much better. And you can see
the England versus Tonga match live | 0:43:19 | 0:43:24
tomorrow on BBC One from 4:30am.
Until then, goodbye. And Valentine | 0:43:24 | 0:43:31
Holmes starts with a try tonight!
# Stay out of my way | 0:43:31 | 0:43:40
# Stay out of my way
# On Valentine's Day... And six of | 0:43:40 | 0:43:49
the best for Valentine Holmes. | 0:43:49 | 0:43:53 |
