Day 3 Highlights Rugby League World Cup

Hello. Welcome to highlights of the

three matches from day three of the

Rugby League World Cup 2017. We have

Ireland against Italy. Scotland

verses Tonga and Lebanon against

France. The two heavyweights of the

game, well two heavyweight beards

have joined us to for today's

action.

Good to have you both here, guys. Is

there a person, an event which has

caught you eye so far?

I was

encouraged by the England

performance. Our outside backs.

If we are going to go there and beat

Australia it was to be in that

final. Despite the fact we lost, I

think we played really well.

England

can take some massive positives. It

was great to see Roby and Lochlan.

Rolling back the years

They are the

kind of people who win you big

games. It is promising and it means

going forward we will continue.

Thank you for now. Before we go to

our first match, here is how the

Rugby World Cup 2017 works. There's

four teams in Pool A and B. They

play three matches. Each plays their

pool opposition once. The top three

teams from Pool A and B qualify for

the quarter finals. Each team in

pool C and D play their pool

opposition once. For their third

they play one match against pool C.

Pool D opposition. Those C verses D

matches, made of today's clash

between Ireland and Italy. Wales

verses Fiji and Papua New Guinea

against the USA. Only winners of

Group C or D qualify for the quarter

finals. Who meets who is anyone's

guess. Australia are likely to top

Pool A. They then will be favourites

to play the third placed team in

Pool A.

Papua New Guinea could be that team.

Time will tell.

To the action. Shortly we will see

Tonga against world ranked four

side, Scotland. The Group A between

Lebanon and France. First, it is the

pool C and D clash between Ireland.

Heavily supported by a strong Super

League presence and an Italy side

with plenty of NRL stars. At Barlow

Park in Cairns, calling this one for

us.

from St Helens. Ireland inside the

from the captain, Finn. Nice tackle

around the legs by Jack Johns. Early

pressure here for the Italians. .

ball super fast at the moment.

address.

Three Italians defending, including

Alvaro and Vaughan. Planted down in

the corner - what a start for

Ireland. Italy have not touched the

ball. Ireland to a 4-0 lead.

This is Liam Finn who will do the

goal kicking from the Wakefield

club. 83% this year. He's dealing a

pretty stiff breeze going straight

down the ground.

Deliberately keeps

it low and down the middle. What a

perfect start for the Irish Wolf

Hounds. They have the breeze on

their backs and they are taking an

early advantage. 6-0. Ireland.

Now shifted left. Passes it to

Tedesco. An extravagant spin, then

another one.

beans. Only ten short of halfway.

We

can see the first pass from Vaughan

was a nice one. Ghietti needed to

take the tackle.

themselves in the foot. In

conditions like this you cannot let

teams out of their own area so easy.

and the Irish will start on the

20-metre line.

Looking for their second try. That's

He may have put the Irish out to a

double-dig get lead. And Ireland

lead Italy 10-0.

They are aren't to be running ahead

of the clock here, the Irish. A

shock start. They came into this

game as underdogs.

As Liam Finn drives it through. The

one thing we have not had in this

World Cup, a wonderful start to the

tournament, we have not had a

thriller, a really close game. The

Italians have to get off the mat

here. We may be in store for a tight

one this afternoon. The Italians,

their first genuine opportunity to

put points on the board in this

game. About 13 Irish men innup any

son called that a forward pass and

the referee agreed.

Just got a little bit disjointed.

Jack Johns going to the line, which

he does brilliantly. Mark

Minichiello ahead of him there.

The Irish Wolf Hounds they have a

lot of Super League experience.

This is fast turning into a disaster

for the Italians. What an

opportunity to extend.

In it comes and Michael Morgan, up

to the 20. Hard to put down.

The penalty there, not coming. And

Singleton over the ten-metre line.

McCarthy-Scarsbrook. Another

penalty.

Now, this is an interesting decision

to be made here.

They seem to have Italily on the

ropes. -- Italy on the ropes. It is

a pretty gettable two points.

The Irish captain remains perfect.

And the lead extends out to 14-0.

Ireland, the outsiders, leading the

Italians.

Hard to put down. That's the halfway

line you can see there. Italy, they

are just relenting in defence. The

Irish, although good work there from

Riethmuller. McCarthy-Scarsbrook

sees an opening. Oh, it's cost them

badly. McCarthy-Scarsbrook had them

lined up on his outside.

He had too

many options on there. It was

three-on-one.

It all went a bit pear shaped.

McCarthy. And so close to the line.

Liam Kay gets a double and Ireland

All looked pretty good from our

angle.

It is confirmed, three tries for

Ireland in the first half an hour.

This just gets better and better for

so much speed to burn. Over on that

left edge. Fantastic play from Kay.

Tyrone McCarthy... Oh, that was

telegraphed and here we go. Only Kay

can catch him. It is all over.

Goodbye! Castellaro, local boy, he

puts points on the board for the

Italians. My word, they needed that!

And maybe a come back. Exactly what

they needed just before the half

time break.

And Scott Grix has been passing

them. This time he picked out the

Italian centre.

So, it is a 14-point margin.

Italian fans who came alive when he

ran down the field, finally a little

bit of joy in this half.

So the weather is a challenge and

the scoreboard, a major challenge.

Tedesco... Grix has got work to do.

It is put down by Castellaro. Now,

Ireland will get this, Ireland will

give this back. But what a chance

lost here. Castellaro couldn't

believe his good fortune.

Extremely

was a nice little kick and Grix

These are the sort of conditions

which have knocked about some great

kickers like Renyold and Crocer, but

pinpoint so far. The Italians

pressing.

free.

McCarthy-Scarsbrook... He needs to

get it. He needs to get it on, but

he's wrapped up by the brilliant

chase... Grix comes back to Kay. Kay

has already scored two. He cannot

shake off Wilkie.

Finn... Morgan, he'll try and do it

on his own. He gets over and he

claims it.

Certainly not been their day today,

the Italians. Been some poor

options. But we take nothing away

from this Irish side. They have been

excellent.

It's Ireland's afternoon. That

should see us out. What a thumping

win it's been.

Pretty vocal where they were coming.

A challenge to our middles. We stood

up and I think we'll give it to

them.

Played over the last two

weeks. We've been outstanding. The

boys have been great. They've put a

lot of work in to get that result.

And we believed. You could see that

in the performance. The first

minutes were the proudest I have

ever been. Certainly the last six

years with Ireland, put it to the

best performance.

What a win for Ireland.

Next Sunday, Papua New Guinea

against Ireland is a massive match.

A win for either, you'd fancy that

team to progress to the quarter

finals. Necessary t Sunday, Wales

meets Fiji.

As for pool D, Fiji it is

comfortably at the top. They were

impressive against the USA yesterday

and will be favourites to progress

from that group. Wales, we just said

there, next opponents. Italy take on

the USA next Sunday. Just to put

even more context on to that, it was

well over 30 degrees. They had, the

humidity in credible.

That was so incredible from Ireland.

As soon as the ball were kicked,

Ireland were on top.

What are those

conditions like?

It's tough. You

spend the majority of the game

trying to get your breath back. But

they handled it better than the

Italy side. Throughout that game as

well, Ireland looked like they had

more energy.

It was built on

defendants. -- it was built on

defence.

The line speed here from

Ireland. There'll be talking as

well. Those Southsea islanders, how

big they are, but in this World Cup

there are not many going to be

mentally tougher than the Irish

pack. They will work really hard for

each other. And with their leader

leading them around the park they

will cause trouble for teams.

Everyone got the job done. With the

coach saying the first 40 minutes

were the proudest he's ever been.

Who's idea was it to kick off at

2pm. In Australia that would have

been 500 stuff. It is awful. He's

just worked his behind off and done

a great job.

Mickey McIlorum he was great.

He

will work harder than anyone you

will see. Ran 70 metres to make a

tackle. One on one like this, that

is his bread and butter. Not many

will get past him. He's got skills

like that, kicking, to put this try

in here for King. It is something

he's developed massively for Wigan.

It's paid off for him.

What do they

need to do to get past Papua New

Guinea?

More of the same. It will be

a mouth-watering game. I think

legacy was mentioned. Only proud

about going out there and

representing Ireland. And to live,

to love and to leave a legacy. It

seems that Irish team are going out

there to do that. They are proud in

their shirts and they are looking

forward to whatever challenge comes

up against them.

Mickey tweeted. "My

grandfather died this year and to

play for Ireland is the pinnacle of

my career, to honour his legacy. I

hope he's looking down on me." They

were talked about being outsiders

going into that game. They are not

now, are they?

It did surprise me.

Looking at the pack, especially, we

have some blokes in there that are

top level Super League players week

in, week out. I don't know why they

were underdogs for that game. I

thought, looking at both sides they

were going to win any way.

That will

be some game next week. We will have

the highlights. Scotland had a

memorable Four Nations last year

after drawing against New Zealand.

That has helped them to a world

ranking level of fourth. Today they

opened up against a mighty looking

Tongan side, which has been boosted

by many high profile defections from

New Zealand. So it was a tough task

for the brave Hearts. Calling this

one, the second match played at

Barlow Park today.

This is turning into an exhibition.

It all came off that early off-load

and they are making a statement

in this first half. Coming out of

trouble, the big powerful forwards

He's going to try and do it on his

They've done reasonably well so far,

great job on the previous play to

They've looked fragile on

that right side all afternoon. It

was a beautiful play. Jennings just

hit a nice line and handed it off to

Tupou and was just waiting for the

ball to come back to him. What a

classy player he is.

Frankie Mariano, the biggest forward

in this Scottish pack. First

receiver was shot. And that is a

result for Scotland.

Great field

positioning. They had enough numbers

there, the Tongan side. Hopoale

knocks it deadpanned a big set

defensively for them coming up now.

attache. I don't know what that

means but he was blaring out the

music on the boom box! Inside the

So, they're

finally on the board! Let's see what

Scotland can do here. Perhaps a

It is a fair starting forward pack,

isn't it? Some fine players that

have been left out of the side as

well. Including Mahe Fonua, who has

been a star in rugby league. Did not

even make the 21 man squad for this

game! Beautiful pass. Down the

middle goes Murdoch-Masila. He's got

Hingano on the left, and they're

going to score again, the Tongans!

Here they come, they're about to

crack 50! What an awesome sight!

Predominantly they've been trying to

go around this Scottish side. This

time Lolohea decided to turn it

under and a great finish on the back

of it.

They did their best work in

the first half. They've got bigger.

To fry, but that is an impressive

opening gambit.

It was hard in the

first 20 and credit to Scotland,

they really put on a show. For us,

are forwards did a really good job,

which made it easy for me on the

edge and a bit of space there and we

took advantage of it.

I think we let

ourselves down a little bit today

and we will lick our wounds.

Injury-wise we're fine. Second half

we held the ball well and we

executed well and we showed enough

desire and commitment to say that we

will be OK in the tournament.

Next

week, Samoa, our traditional rivals.

They will be right up to play us and

we will be right up to play them. We

know we're going to have to be

better. But that gives us a real

confidence boost and a glimpse of

the ability and we can enjoy a good

win tonight.

I don't think you can

give a team as much respect as we

did. We know they're great players

individually but I don't think we

showed everything we can, which was

disappointing. But as the coaches

have just said, we have to look

forward to next week.

An impressive

win, then, for Tonga and they are

top of the pool. Scotland's last

match is against Samoa and it could

be that one which determines who

takes the third qualifying place.

Jamie, we spoke to Steve MacCormack

yesterday and he knew they were in

for a tough match, but right from

the off they were on the back foot

and only yes, he will be

disappointed. I thought the Scottish

guys did well in the contact early

on and you got the sense they work

up for it, they sang the last verse

of their national anthem in a

cappella! And then from the

kick-off, they defended for two

minutes and they just fell off the

cliff, energy-wise. When you're

playing against a team like Tonga,

you've got to turn them around.

Essentially they were playing in a

70 metre pitch. With a kicker like

Danny Brough, you've got to make the

most of him and turn them around.

Dan said in commentary it looked at

times like men against boys. The

average weight basically one stone

heavier across the park. You've

played with some of those guys, and

against them - how tough is it to

stop them?

It is very tough. It's a

lot better playing alongside them

double against them! Some of the

fellas in that team, when I was

watching the clips, you look at the

number six here, to Lola, he looks

small in that clip! And people like

Jason Taumalolo in the middle, the

game plan is going to be to use the

forwards as a battering ram, and

they did that.

They've got pace,

though, as well, that's what gets

you?

They are, they're massive and

you've got to weather the storm,

you've got to put your body in

front. For me, it's just shot your

eyes and hope for the best in the

first 20 minutes! Get a good cycle

going, some great kick chases, and

by the time you get to 60 minutes

in, those boys will burn up, because

their bodies are not designed to

have that sort of enjoyment is a

deep that's where you win that kind

of game. But Scotland never got into

it from the off.

Danny Brough

saying, we can't play worse than

that. They didn't help themselves?

No, they didn't. I think as Josie

said, you need to keep hold of the

ball. The Tongan guys are getting a

breather at every scrum, and if

you're having to defend, Scotland

did the worst they could against a

team like Tonga. Steve MacCormack

spoke about it after the game, they

showed a bit in the second half,

they had some desire but they shot

themselves in the foot.

So how do

you prepare for New Zealand after

that?

For me, build on Lewis Tierney

and Matty Russell, who I thought

were outstanding at the back. They

worked really hard and I thought

they showed some real class at

times. Those boys have just what to

get back in, regroup and keep

sporting those nice tartan pants,

which looked outstanding in my book!

How far can Tonga go? People talking

about them breaking into that top

three?

Maybe so but it will not be

quite as effective coming up against

Samoa and New Zealand, two sides who

will be able to match them

physically. So I think there will be

a lot of pressure going forward for

Tonga on the two halves, and they

will have to step up.

Lebanon-France

in a moment. First, some details of

World Cup and they are coached by

the legendary Bradford. For France,

they have many Catalan Dragons as

the spine of their squad.

A beautiful afternoon in Canberra

and this French side has some good

young players, Gary it is an

experienced and very good French

line-up. Are they good enough today

against a Lebanon on side which has

been hit by injury in the warm-up?

Opportunity here for Kassis. Five

metres away from the line. Mannah

edging his way towards the goal

line. Moses, quick hands... Lebanon

score first! They had the field

position and they finally turned it

into points.

Yeah, the big sucker

punch up the middle. Layoun did not

need to use his winner. Delight for

Lebanon in the World Cup. Anthony

Layoun happy with that one.

France

finally get an opportunity now down

the other end of the grand. Garcia

back to Theo Fages. Plenty of French

razzle-dazzle! And here go France

for the corner! Has he got it down?

I think he has! It's going to be

close, though. There is an injured

Lebanon player on the ground, or is

that a French player?

REFEREE: We have a try. It's

checking the grounding from Bastien

Ader.

TMO: That is the point where it

could be grounded, but it is the

Lebanese man's foot. There is

insufficient evidence. We've got to

go with the line call, and we're

giving a try.

I think that's a fair

call.

Well, actually I agree that he

didn't go into touch. I couldn't see

the ball go down.

Don't have to, the

referee on the field says try and he

can't overturn that, based on what

he saw. Out of acting half, Eloi

Pelissier. King for support and

finds it in Bousquet. Penalty.

You're on the ground, playing the

They've got them on the ropes

at the moment. All of a sudden

possession is even at 50-50. And

The

game was out of reach, really.

France were finishing the better,

they had more energy, but they found

a way to win, so that showed really

good quality ensured I think it was

just the France in the end, when

everyone is tired, who makes the

difference. It was OK for me. But

some players made the difference two

or three times.

Lebanese man, ever since I played

for them in 2002, there's something

there that I can't explain, and the

support was outstanding. We're

looking for a big crowd technique.

of the World Cup for me, with those

fantastic fans. Some great

performances. It is hard to weigh up

the quality of both teams, but I

thought it was a great contest, and

Mitchell Moses' unbelievable try at

the end - it was like Sam Tomkins!

He was different class, wasn't he,

They've got a great combination with

Moses, and Farah, who has been

around for donkeys' years. This

triad the end, he makes it look

easy. But it was a perfectly

weighted kick, which is testament to

How difficult are they going to

be for England next week?

I think

England have only got to worry about

the two men, it's the six and seven.

I don't think it will be a tough

game for England. I think they will

win convincingly and if they can

look after the halfbacks, I don't

think they've got anything to worry

about.

What do you want to see Wayne

Bennett do for this game, should he

stick with the core of the team or

should he win the changes?

England

don't have to be ten out of ten

against Lebanon, they have to be ten

out of ten against Australia in a

few weeks' time. It's just getting

better, finding their skills,

getting over those nerves and just

keep improving. They've got to start

building confidence and.

What we're

seeing, though, you can look at

Australia in the final - we've got

to get their first. The quarterfinal

is starting to look trickier, isn't

it? Several teams looking good?

Yeah, it's going to be tough to get

to the final, but I believe we've

got the squad to do it, there's lot

of talent in that England side. They

probably did not give the best

account of themselves against

Australia, but it's the first game

of the World Cup, it's a long

process, and if they can keep

improving, by the time the

quarterfinal comes around, they will

be playing a lot better.

Would you

like to see George Williams brought

in maybe, some changes?

I think John

Bateman would be better suited in

the pack, and that might happen,

with Sam Burgess not playing this

week. It is a time to be able to try

a few things. You don't want to be

sticking with the same squad,

because later in the competition it

will be tough to bring changes in,

so I'd like to see some different

combinations, but I'll leave that to

Wayne Bennett, he knows all about

coaching.

How much will they miss a

big Sam?

He's outstanding and a big

performer but I agree with some, I

would like to see Bateman coming in

and play like he does for Wigan. And

get Kallum Watkins so he can put

McGillvary of a. But I trust and I

believe in our England team. I have

genuine faith that they will do the

job this year.

Suddenly can put

McGillvary away. So, there were

positives for England in defeat.

Wales and Scotland have work to do.

However, it's the Irish eyes that

are smiling. They're up and running.
