A warm welcome to Melrose, home of rugby sevens. It was back in 1883

:00:31.:00:36.

that the first game of sevens happened right here in this town.

:00:37.:00:40.

Since then the sport has developed into a worldwide phenomenon and this

:00:41.:00:45.

year it will make it all in big debut. We are here this afternoon

:00:46.:00:50.

for five hours of live sevens rugby and if it is anything like last year

:00:51.:00:52.

we are in for a treat. Oh my goodness me. It is all

:00:53.:01:12.

Warriors. Great try. Through he goes. Lovely try for Glasgow.

:01:13.:01:25.

Scores a try. He will be a proud man. It has finished with a real

:01:26.:01:34.

display of passion. It is a wonderful day for a game of

:01:35.:01:47.

rugby and the action here got underway at 11:30am, we have

:01:48.:01:51.

completed the first round and this is what you have missed so far.

:01:52.:02:03.

just a reminder of the first-round results so far, Howe of Fife out of

:02:04.:03:07.

the competition, knocked out by Edinburgh Accies.

:03:08.:03:22.

Watsonians won this competition 20 years ago and through to next round.

:03:23.:03:37.

The first match in the second round, Edinburgh Accies ahead against Ayr.

:03:38.:03:48.

They won 33-17, coming back from being down, fantastic match, great

:03:49.:03:51.

performance, disappointment for a very young Ayr team. Good to have

:03:52.:03:59.

you with us, the weather is sensational. Fantastic day for

:04:00.:04:05.

rugby. I am joined by the former Scotland sevens coach, the first

:04:06.:04:08.

round already complete, some surprises as well? Yes, great to see

:04:09.:04:14.

Marr coming and getting a victory, it will be intriguing to see how the

:04:15.:04:22.

Invitational teams get on. They knocked out Stirling County, they

:04:23.:04:27.

have never done particularly well here but some invitational sides

:04:28.:04:30.

that we will talk about during the course of the afternoon but you know

:04:31.:04:34.

how important this competition is for Southern truck bid, you played

:04:35.:04:37.

around the world as a coach and this is where it comes from. This is by

:04:38.:04:44.

far the best club tournament in the world and it's great to be here,

:04:45.:04:49.

sunshine and a wonderful atmosphere. The rugby does not stop here, you

:04:50.:04:54.

will see it all on BBC Two Scotland and the next match is Boroughmuir

:04:55.:05:02.

against Gala. COMMENTATOR: Gala to the left of the picture, 0-0 in the

:05:03.:05:10.

opening seconds. Lovely conditions. It's perfect for southern side

:05:11.:05:15.

rugby. Some of the tries you have seen in the build-up to the

:05:16.:05:18.

afternoon showed how easy it is for teams to get a good footing on this

:05:19.:05:26.

task. Doddie Weir is alongside me resplendent in multiple colours of

:05:27.:05:33.

tartan and it's been great so far. Yes, some great sevens played so

:05:34.:05:37.

far, great weather not only for the players but the spectators as well.

:05:38.:05:42.

There we go, looking splendid, shirt and tie and everything. Setting the

:05:43.:05:47.

standard. And setting the standard on the field, some great play. The

:05:48.:05:56.

pictures been a bit damp. -- the pitch has been. We have seen people

:05:57.:06:02.

slipping when trying to sidestep. Look at this, the opener for Gala.

:06:03.:06:12.

The assistant referee keeps the flag down, does that everyone forward? He

:06:13.:06:19.

does but the try is given. That is the opener in this tie which is the

:06:20.:06:27.

second of Round 2. Width on the ball, Graham Spiers, you can see how

:06:28.:06:33.

in today's game, you also have an end goal referee who awarded the

:06:34.:06:44.

try. All the conversions attempts in sevens are from the drop-kick. Would

:06:45.:06:51.

you believe it, he has got it, what a wonderful touchline conversion.

:06:52.:06:56.

His father would have been proud of that. I think a lot of people would

:06:57.:07:04.

have been proud of that, a fantastic effort right from the touchline. Two

:07:05.:07:08.

points could be valuable at the end of this game. Gala get it underway

:07:09.:07:14.

again. Lovely cake by Andie Rose for Boroughmuir. -- lovely cake. Picked

:07:15.:07:25.

up by Walker. Trying to bustle his way through. Comes out along the

:07:26.:07:35.

line. He has the flyer outside him on his left, right. That is Gavin

:07:36.:07:42.

Welsh. But they are going the other way. Giving the ball lots of space,

:07:43.:07:51.

back to Andie Rose. Playing from one side to the other at the moment,

:07:52.:07:56.

going from one standard to the temporary stand, just to try and

:07:57.:08:01.

find some space. Plenty of space, that's the sort of thing that can

:08:02.:08:09.

frustrate the players. The knock-on. He will be frustrated because it's

:08:10.:08:13.

hard enough to win the ball without giving it away with an easy knock-on

:08:14.:08:21.

like that. Big tall lad, the perfect athletic build for southern aside

:08:22.:08:31.

rugby. The Grand National, might be heavy going and it looks heavy going

:08:32.:08:41.

out here. Here come Gala, another flyer on the field, Craig Robertson.

:08:42.:08:47.

Ewan Scott. Sidestep, look at the exhilaration, and a lovely little

:08:48.:08:57.

step of the right and followed by that on the left, hand off like a

:08:58.:09:02.

boxer 's punch and he goes over for the second try. Delight on his face,

:09:03.:09:11.

he used to play rugby for Jedburgh before coming to play for

:09:12.:09:16.

Galashiels. Watch the build-up to this again. You would think, nice

:09:17.:09:25.

little sidestep, two, lovely quick of foot, making it difficult for the

:09:26.:09:31.

opposition to tackle. You have to make the first line tackles, if you

:09:32.:09:35.

don't that is what happens. Well done Ewan Scott. He's quite a big

:09:36.:09:39.

chap, did well under the posts. The most perfect setting for

:09:40.:09:50.

southern aside rugby, the Eildon Hills in the background. I have been

:09:51.:09:57.

up those a few times in my lifetime but not today, the place to be is

:09:58.:10:01.

where the 11,000 are today, seated around the Greenyards in lovely

:10:02.:10:11.

conditions. Interested in seeing how well Gala doing because it's their

:10:12.:10:15.

first game in the competition, and year have already played so you

:10:16.:10:18.

would have thought they would be a bit more together. -- Boroughmuir

:10:19.:10:26.

have already played. Another breakthrough, Steve Cairns. Suddenly

:10:27.:10:33.

taking matters into his own hands and he is off. And there goes the

:10:34.:10:47.

flyer, Gavin Welsh. He has tremendous pace, scored a barrel of

:10:48.:10:51.

tries at the Galashiels sevens last weekend. The crowd enjoying that.

:10:52.:11:00.

That was good play, Galashiels on the front foot but sometimes they

:11:01.:11:03.

have to pass can be quite cruel at times, good play from Boroughmuir.

:11:04.:11:10.

Could have been a food fight to write to the line but Gavin Walsh is

:11:11.:11:16.

a runner, he took the ball and put it right between the posts which

:11:17.:11:24.

makes a very exciting game. 14-7 at the break in favour of Gala. They

:11:25.:11:30.

don't get all that long to take on water but they need it because in

:11:31.:11:34.

these conditions, we are warm in the commentary box but down on the field

:11:35.:11:38.

in the direct sunshine and all that running around the players will be

:11:39.:11:44.

feeling the heat. Not only that but it's a different game, boys have

:11:45.:11:46.

been playing fifteens most of the season, different fitness required

:11:47.:11:51.

for sevens. You have to get your stamina, your fitness is different

:11:52.:11:56.

to what you have been used to. Looking forward to the little break,

:11:57.:12:02.

try to get as big and as well break as they can. Good crowd already,

:12:03.:12:09.

this is the second game of the second round. Already the people

:12:10.:12:17.

have flooded in, they have come by train, by bus and mortar car, and

:12:18.:12:23.

they have walked of course from the neighbouring villages. Always a

:12:24.:12:29.

great, festive party feeling to this competition. It is the blue-ribbon

:12:30.:12:36.

event on the Scottish circuit. The Melrose medal is the one that all

:12:37.:12:40.

the players covet, the one that they want. The second half under way.

:12:41.:12:48.

Didn't go the ten. They come back for a free kick at halfway and Gala

:12:49.:12:53.

have the advantage of possession and the free kick. Did the right thing,

:12:54.:13:01.

just half a yard of the ten yard line, let it bounce to see that it

:13:02.:13:09.

would go but it didn't. This lad usually plays as a centre at

:13:10.:13:12.

fifteens but is big and broad enough to play as a forward in sevens.

:13:13.:13:25.

Along the lines it goes. Gala playing a bit of cat and mouse,

:13:26.:13:28.

Frankie Robson with the ball, used to play at Kelso but now is with the

:13:29.:13:37.

Galashiels team. Along the line it comes. He has Robertson outside him.

:13:38.:13:50.

Back it comes on the Boroughmuir side, that's a good turnover. Very

:13:51.:13:56.

good turnover, very important as well, have to protect the ball going

:13:57.:14:01.

into the tackle. Boroughmuir have to watch. Frankie Robson was tackled

:14:02.:14:08.

and released the ball but played it before getting back on his feet

:14:09.:14:12.

which is why the penalty has been awarded. Sam Johnson for

:14:13.:14:22.

Boroughmuir. Good bustling running. Up the touchline, infield it goes.

:14:23.:14:31.

Mark Walker, the kick ahead and the chase by Gavin Welsh. He has to be

:14:32.:14:36.

careful not to overdo it, that's the pick-up and in he goes. Second try

:14:37.:14:46.

for Boroughmuir. Well worked try, against the run of play again.

:14:47.:14:50.

They've not had the ball all that often in attack but when they do

:14:51.:14:53.

that is the man you don't want having the ball in front of him.

:14:54.:14:57.

Good bit of footballing skill as well. Just a little pick-up, one of

:14:58.:15:02.

his easier tries because Gala didn't quite chase it down. Boroughmuir,

:15:03.:15:10.

when they have got the space, they make the most of it. The conversion

:15:11.:15:15.

just going to the left side. This is the little tap, it is

:15:16.:15:29.

control that is needed, picking up the ball as he was rolling away from

:15:30.:15:34.

him, it's a very difficult skill and more often than not you will see

:15:35.:15:37.

knock-on is. But he chanced his arm and came good. The little break, the

:15:38.:15:48.

missed tackle by Gala. Gala in possession on the far side. Comes

:15:49.:16:00.

infield, Simon Fairburn. Gala monopolising possession at the

:16:01.:16:03.

moment. Coming out along the line. Parker goes. Parker is strong as you

:16:04.:16:10.

another sprinter. Brought down that time. Boroughmuir need the turnover

:16:11.:16:20.

but they don't have at this time. Along the line it goes, Graham

:16:21.:16:26.

Spiers looking for runners. Not a problem. Sauntering in and touching

:16:27.:16:29.

down. Good strong running. Just had to

:16:30.:16:49.

stroll in. It was all made by the lovely break up the wing. I think I

:16:50.:16:59.

could have scored that one. Not sure if I would have been there in the

:17:00.:17:02.

first place but I could have finished it off for them. Would you

:17:03.:17:08.

like to put on a Galashiels Jersey? As a Hawick man I would have to

:17:09.:17:10.

think about it very long and hard. Almost well caught, almost caught.

:17:11.:17:28.

And the interception by Graham Spiers, he's away again. His second

:17:29.:17:37.

in this game. Galashiels's fourth. Also simple and so annoying for the

:17:38.:17:42.

team giving away the interception. This is a big thing which isn't

:17:43.:17:46.

being done as much as it should be, you have to hustle the ball carrier,

:17:47.:17:50.

get up there and have some contact to put the opposite team under

:17:51.:17:54.

pressure. He's done that exceptionally well, Graham Spiers.

:17:55.:18:00.

He has been the man who has stood out and is working well for Gala.

:18:01.:18:08.

That's the view people have from the main grandstand just on the halfway

:18:09.:18:12.

line, you can see the substitute sitting there and biding their time.

:18:13.:18:19.

Frankie Robson for Galashiels again. Perhaps a slight knock: upon receipt

:18:20.:18:29.

of the kick-off. The referee has been fantastic so far, speaking to

:18:30.:18:34.

the players. Which has been helping the players continue the game, keep

:18:35.:18:40.

the game flowing. Playing quite a bit of advantage which is quite good

:18:41.:18:43.

because you don't want to stop and start play. Into the last minute of

:18:44.:18:50.

play in this game, the Boroughmuir scrum-half running away up the far

:18:51.:18:53.

side but he won't get away from Parker. Parker just had the gas to

:18:54.:19:04.

get there and put in the covering tackle. Gave him the outside, got

:19:05.:19:17.

him right to the touchline, and got the throw. They are allowed to do

:19:18.:19:24.

lifting in the line-out of course. Good ball for Gala, Parker again,

:19:25.:19:29.

Graham Spiers, look at the acceleration! Beautiful running by

:19:30.:19:34.

Graham Spiers. Sam Johnson tries to cut him off in the corner, just a

:19:35.:19:38.

bit late. Another lovely try for Gala. Graham Spiers with yet another

:19:39.:19:48.

try, his third in this game. That's the final whistle. Galashiels the

:19:49.:19:54.

winners over Boroughmuir, comfortable winners in this second

:19:55.:19:56.

round tie, 33-12. You don't get any easy ties here.

:19:57.:20:28.

Very pleased. This tournament is special to most of us involved in

:20:29.:20:31.

Scottish rugby but how important is it for you boarders teams together

:20:32.:20:37.

good show? Massive, I was lucky enough to win this competition as a

:20:38.:20:39.

player. Good luck in the next round. This could be a cracking game. On

:20:40.:20:55.

the left it is Jedburgh, some familiar faces in Fraser Harkness

:20:56.:21:03.

and Gregor Young. Some quick, tall runners, Selkirk on the right who

:21:04.:21:10.

are receiving. What are the tactics? The key starting point is the

:21:11.:21:17.

restart and Selkirk have the ball. Selkirk away already, Ross Nixon was

:21:18.:21:21.

playing well in the earlier round. Keep your eyes out for Wellman, the

:21:22.:21:33.

flyer. He is pointing and ushering, gives it deep to Nixon. In terms of

:21:34.:21:40.

how they have to play the game, is with key? -- width. Yes, Selkirk

:21:41.:21:50.

trying to keep a hold of the ball and look for space and only have

:21:51.:21:53.

created an opportunity on the outside. Good one-handed pass, Nixon

:21:54.:22:02.

again involved. Davis, Marshall, McDougall and Welsh in the Selkirk

:22:03.:22:08.

team. This is one of the young brothers who have plenty of pace.

:22:09.:22:14.

They have three players who have played international sevens in the

:22:15.:22:17.

Jedburgh team but if you don't have the ball it's very difficult and

:22:18.:22:21.

Selkirk have had the monopoly in the first minute and a half. It's one of

:22:22.:22:28.

the most beautiful settings. Nice little pass, backhanded flip. No

:22:29.:22:36.

corn, got the ball to Marshall but it will be a scrum -- knock-on. The

:22:37.:22:47.

scrum will be important, Selkirk have played a tie in the first round

:22:48.:22:51.

so Jedburgh will be looking to set the tone. Just to give you an idea

:22:52.:23:01.

of some of the teams coming up, a French Invitational team and the

:23:02.:23:07.

Belgian national team who are pretty impressive. Some great sevens stars.

:23:08.:23:14.

Harkness comes here every year, Fraser Harkness, everything about

:23:15.:23:19.

him shout that maybe he should be able to do what he is able to do but

:23:20.:23:26.

he's an incredible sevens players. Very good patience by Jedburgh, went

:23:27.:23:31.

wide of the scrum and Fraser identified the space. He is

:23:32.:23:37.

deceptively quick with a very good rugby brain.

:23:38.:23:48.

This was a cracking try, tells you everything you need to know about

:23:49.:23:55.

how to play the game. And look at this crowd, 11,000 people, a

:23:56.:24:00.

beautiful spring day, are happy and contented crowd. They came here by

:24:01.:24:04.

train, they have driven down from all over the country to be here to

:24:05.:24:09.

watch one of the great sporting events in this country of ours.

:24:10.:24:17.

The referee picking Jedburgh up for not releasing the tackled player and

:24:18.:24:24.

Selkirk looking to try and play quickly.

:24:25.:24:30.

Good break by McDougall. Stays strong. Selkirk, we noticed early

:24:31.:24:46.

on, Selkirk have good technique at the breakdown. Little break by Mikey

:24:47.:24:54.

Davies but he was cornered. We have seen Welsh stride out in the first

:24:55.:24:59.

round. Interesting that the now at this stage don't play again for

:25:00.:25:05.

another two hours. Yes, it's a long break so they know they can give it

:25:06.:25:10.

their all for 40 minutes, it's the recovery strategy afterwards.

:25:11.:25:18.

Wellman smashed by Tywyn. Again the Selkirk technique over the ball. --

:25:19.:25:27.

by Tywyn. John Welsh is collared and the fitness of Jedburgh looks good.

:25:28.:25:33.

The ball squirted the back. The exhaustion starts to creep in. The

:25:34.:25:39.

outside channel, play between the 15 metre line and the touchline on both

:25:40.:25:44.

sides, that is critical. The team that can get numbers there, what

:25:45.:25:49.

Jedburgh dead was applying pressure at the break and Selkirk could not

:25:50.:25:50.

numbers there. Selkirk against Jedburgh, Jedburgh

:25:51.:26:04.

in the light blue on the left. Lots of gas in this Jedburgh team if they

:26:05.:26:15.

can get the ball to them. Harkness. Another penalty. Harkness could see

:26:16.:26:19.

an opportunity, he has Reddy scored one try, exit long. -- he has

:26:20.:26:22.

already. -- kick it long. Wellman, the quick man, but he's not

:26:23.:26:42.

had much space. Jedburgh have marshalled him very well, they will

:26:43.:26:44.

know each other from playing last weekend at Gala. An international

:26:45.:26:51.

sevens team would be very wide that when a club team gets tired they are

:26:52.:26:58.

quite narrow. The speed of organisation is very intense and

:26:59.:27:00.

both teams feeling the effects of the heat. Lewis Young, we know they

:27:01.:27:16.

can run. Up against the Selkirk fast man but he has man and ball, it is

:27:17.:27:25.

all so unless he can get it to the ground it will be a scrum to

:27:26.:27:31.

Jedburgh. Identified Selkirk didn't have a sweeper, quite often teams

:27:32.:27:34.

will play with six on the front line defence and a sweeper in behind and

:27:35.:27:38.

he recognised the sweeper was not there and put a kick in, but to be

:27:39.:27:43.

fair Wellman did well to get back on the ball. But a turnover opportunity

:27:44.:27:49.

and a scrum for Jedburgh. No identification of anybody at home,

:27:50.:27:55.

but the good try by Chisholm. Jedburgh score their second. Ian

:27:56.:27:58.

Chisholm profiting from some loose ball. That was a great score.

:27:59.:28:07.

Straight from the scrum, picking up and going through. If we go back to

:28:08.:28:15.

the kick from Lewis Young, the vision and understanding of the

:28:16.:28:20.

space in the game. This space can be through the middle, around the

:28:21.:28:23.

outside or in behind and that opportunity it was in behind.

:28:24.:28:27.

Unfortunately I missed conversion. It's a good game, Jedburgh are

:28:28.:28:31.

dominating. Half-time. Let's join Hello. I heard you saying on BBC

:28:32.:28:51.

radio Scotland that playing in the Melrose Sevens was on your bucket

:28:52.:28:55.

list so you must be pleased to be here. The crowd are amazing, the

:28:56.:29:01.

weather is nice as well and the turnout for a one-day tournament of

:29:02.:29:04.

Rugby sevens is unbelievable. I think we will give it our best to

:29:05.:29:09.

give the people who came for the show a good game. The German

:29:10.:29:13.

national team came here last year and surprised a lot of people by

:29:14.:29:18.

going all the way to the final. Had you got similar targets for the June

:29:19.:29:26.

team? From the beginning we played a second division team so we grew

:29:27.:29:30.

together and last year we beat them very narrowly in the European

:29:31.:29:35.

Championship and we know they are a big quality side, so we tried to do

:29:36.:29:39.

even better and get as far as they have. As you can see, the quality on

:29:40.:29:44.

the pitch here is really good so it will be a tough competition.

:29:45.:29:49.

Aberdeen first up, best of luck in the tournament.

:29:50.:29:54.

Thank you. That was the Belgian captain talking to Andy Burke. Steve

:29:55.:30:00.

Gemmell, you have watched some of these Belgians played before. Let's

:30:01.:30:05.

just watch this. This could be a try for Selkirk. They have Mikey Davis

:30:06.:30:11.

on the ball now. Out to Nixon. Out to Wellman. A nice cut to Hendry.

:30:12.:30:21.

Young on his own try line. A knock-on. This could be a hand in.

:30:22.:30:29.

What an unlucky gesture. Josh Welsh takes the advantage of that little

:30:30.:30:35.

sloppy knock-on. That came from the restart. A wonderful restart, just

:30:36.:30:40.

onto the ten metre line for Selkirk, gave them the possession and came

:30:41.:30:46.

wide in the wide channel. Jed managed to get it back and then

:30:47.:30:50.

unfortunately an error at this level and this type of game is punished.

:30:51.:30:57.

We have seen some incredible tries already, I think we have seen some

:30:58.:31:03.

great tries. What happens here? Craig Cowan looks up and just

:31:04.:31:07.

spilled the ball. You look up and think you have 95 metres to run and

:31:08.:31:13.

that adds pressure. He lifted his head and dropped the ball,

:31:14.:31:19.

unfortunately. Tell us about the restart. What is happening? What you

:31:20.:31:23.

have got to do is give your attacking players the chance if

:31:24.:31:29.

there is height on the ball, it gives your team the chance to get

:31:30.:31:35.

under it and win the ball back. Possession in sevens is critical.

:31:36.:31:42.

Lots of good pressure from Selkirk. Selkirk have been good at breakdown.

:31:43.:31:46.

All these Jed bodies around the ball. It will be a penalty to Jed.

:31:47.:31:52.

They need to get the youngs and Harkness on the ball. It took Jed a

:31:53.:31:59.

while to get up from the ground. It was Chisholm I think when that ball

:32:00.:32:06.

in. This will be a try. It is indeed. As many as are of the

:32:07.:32:09.

opinion, say "aye". To the contrary, "no". I think it was Robert Hawke

:32:10.:32:12.

who came in on that line. You see the speed of the game that Jed from

:32:13.:32:15.

that quick penalty wanted to play the ball quickly, brought it back to

:32:16.:32:16.

the mark and the referee. Chisholm was not going to be caught.

:32:17.:32:35.

There is Jed extending their lead. They look pretty comfortable. I

:32:36.:32:41.

think he is feeling the heat. Believe me, John, you never feel

:32:42.:32:44.

comfortable with only a 14 point lead. At the moment, Jed seemed to

:32:45.:32:50.

be maximising the opportunities they have with the ball. Selkirk, to be

:32:51.:32:56.

fair, had some possession but have not been able to turn it into

:32:57.:33:01.

points. A great afternoon's rugby in prospect. That is another mistake

:33:02.:33:06.

were it does not make the ten metres line. That will be punished. Gives a

:33:07.:33:12.

free kick in the centre. Nixon, pointing and cajoling. To

:33:13.:33:33.

Robertson. Robertson to Davies. Knocked down deliberately says the

:33:34.:33:39.

referee. Our apologies if you were lip-reading earlier on. Apologies if

:33:40.:33:50.

you were offended. It was going to be called back for the knock-on.

:33:51.:33:57.

Stevie, what is interesting here is that Jed are having to work for the

:33:58.:34:02.

tries, aren't they? A lot of what they are doing is from their own 22.

:34:03.:34:10.

They have some players, the two Youngs. Davies seems to be the

:34:11.:34:19.

playmaker. Everything is going through Mikey Davies. A tackle by

:34:20.:34:31.

Young. It will be a Scrum V. That his white line fever we often talk

:34:32.:34:35.

about in rugby where probably one pass would have been a guaranteed

:34:36.:34:40.

score. Good defence to hold them up there by Mr Young again. Ross Cohen

:34:41.:34:48.

was coming round the defence. It could have been a try. Good

:34:49.:34:52.

snaffling. Harkness is on the ground as well. How tiring is sevens?

:34:53.:35:03.

Extremely tiring. This is a critical stage. Two minutes to go. Selkirk

:35:04.:35:09.

know they will have a chance to get the ball back.

:35:10.:35:19.

Selkirk still on the attack. Lots of little mistakes. Wellman just spins

:35:20.:35:27.

round. It might be too little, too late. A good try. Yes, it was an

:35:28.:35:39.

excellent try. Well worked from the penalty. A simple pass, good finish.

:35:40.:35:45.

You would think Selkirk need to be rushing to take this kick. Even if

:35:46.:35:50.

they get this, they need a converted score. Unfortunately, that dropped

:35:51.:35:57.

shot. Very difficult now. A minute to go. A two score game. We are into

:35:58.:36:07.

the last minute. It has been a really good game this one. That was

:36:08.:36:14.

another mistake. Harkness, I think one of the great playmakers. Young

:36:15.:36:21.

just steps on the gas. This is the stride length of genuine talent,

:36:22.:36:26.

Lewis Young, followed in by his brother Greg Young, who is the

:36:27.:36:29.

captain and Young with that vital score. They chose not to go to the

:36:30.:36:40.

kick-off and it went straight into the hands of Lewis Young. There is

:36:41.:36:49.

the final score. A good game. Just to remind you the time in the top

:36:50.:36:54.

left-hand corner is our time but the referee has his own time so we are

:36:55.:36:59.

playing by that time. We are going to get some great games later on.

:37:00.:37:04.

Let's join Andy Burke again. Thank you. I have got the Jed head

:37:05.:37:10.

coach with me now. Are you happy with what you saw? It was a good

:37:11.:37:22.

win. They are tough to beat. We were scoring tries. Have you set your

:37:23.:37:28.

side any targets about how far they can go? We want to go all the way.

:37:29.:37:32.

We are not just here to make up the numbers. Best of luck.

:37:33.:37:46.

Out in the middle of the field is today's referee for this tie. To the

:37:47.:37:53.

left of the picture, Belgium, the visitors. To the right, Aberdeen. I

:37:54.:38:00.

think we are in for an exciting game here. We had Belgium beat Germany

:38:01.:38:07.

who got to the final last year. Aberdeen in the first round beat

:38:08.:38:12.

Glasgow Hawks. Both teams can play and looking forward to this type,

:38:13.:38:15.

especially the guest side of Belgium. This is a very good start

:38:16.:38:22.

here by the Belgians. Lovely running. It is a tribe for the big

:38:23.:38:32.

man. The big lad with the beard. He is away over six foot seven. Look at

:38:33.:38:37.

him, you would never think he was the kind of person to play sevens.

:38:38.:38:44.

That is the type of try you used to like dodgy. It was by distance. --

:38:45.:38:58.

Doddie. Here's the ball extremely well. So far, within a minute, which

:38:59.:39:08.

is quite interesting because the players don't have a clock so they

:39:09.:39:14.

don't know how many minutes have played but we do. Clever players may

:39:15.:39:21.

be able to see the clock on the old stand. This is the first of the

:39:22.:39:26.

foreign guest sides we have seen. This is Belgium in the yellow, black

:39:27.:39:31.

and red of their national colours. And Aberdeen on the right of your

:39:32.:39:33.

screen. The big fellow Verscelden is a

:39:34.:39:44.

handful. The referee says you cannot do that,

:39:45.:40:12.

that is a penalty. Aberdeen on the attack.

:40:13.:40:25.

I spoke to referees beforehand, I still don't understand the Lawes.

:40:26.:40:30.

What the referees are doing very well if they are explaining that

:40:31.:40:34.

quite well but that was not going back ten yards. You have had a

:40:35.:40:39.

lifetime of not understanding the law Ayes of rugby, Doddie! -- the

:40:40.:40:51.

laws. If you play well you could put yourself... Look at them go for the

:40:52.:40:59.

corner. That is a SuperDrive. That levels it. It is 5-5. Delighted with

:41:00.:41:09.

his effort. -- a superb try. Weighing up the options. When you

:41:10.:41:19.

get out of that straight line, you do sometimes create a space. A good

:41:20.:41:27.

effort there. That made the drop kick over the post a lot trickier

:41:28.:41:31.

but you could see the referee with his flag in the air which is a

:41:32.:41:37.

tremendous notch for an extra two points. Alex Haggart with the

:41:38.:41:43.

conversion so to 7- 04 Aberdeen Rugby. What a good start for them.

:41:44.:41:48.

The clock at the top will give you an indication roughly of where we

:41:49.:41:54.

are in the game. There is a chance here for the Belgians. I watched

:41:55.:42:00.

them training yesterday and again, I thought they were very good handlers

:42:01.:42:03.

of the ball but I have not seen them in contact until now. They are still

:42:04.:42:08.

going to have their handling skills but they still have to accomplish

:42:09.:42:12.

that when they are fatigued. Very much, Bill. Belgian caught the ball

:42:13.:42:19.

from the kick-off. Aberdeen anticipated that would pass. Belgium

:42:20.:42:24.

took it on but forward past. Good play here stop a lovely run around.

:42:25.:42:29.

A chance here. That was a good try for Belgium.

:42:30.:42:37.

Good team work there. That could easily have gone the

:42:38.:42:52.

other way. That could easily have been an intercept. That is how

:42:53.:42:56.

exciting the game is. A lovely try there.

:42:57.:43:06.

Mr conversion there, two points on this. That could be vital at the end

:43:07.:43:14.

of this game because Aberdeen are playing well.

:43:15.:43:30.

Well taken there by Aberdeen. One of these we study forwards at the

:43:31.:43:36.

middle of it. There was a knock-on by Aberdeen

:43:37.:44:01.

there. Number three puts his team under a little bit of pressure. You

:44:02.:44:09.

don't really want to throw the ball high in the air. The Belgian team is

:44:10.:44:20.

coached by Nicholas LaRue who used to play seven asides for France. He

:44:21.:44:26.

is a Frenchman. He played for Stade Francais in his 15 aside days.

:44:27.:45:03.

The captain just did that little dummy as if he was going to do a

:45:04.:45:11.

little step. It made the defence checked and allowed Loic Lechlen to

:45:12.:45:17.

go right in the corner. So half time here at the Greenyards. Here we are,

:45:18.:45:23.

tie number four in the second round. We are gradually working our way

:45:24.:45:26.

through to the real business end of the competition. There are the

:45:27.:45:32.

Belgians, and that man Loic Lechlen, he has done some good running. Here

:45:33.:45:39.

is one of his tries. See that little dummy. That allowed Loic Lechlen to

:45:40.:45:51.

run into the corner which I think even you could do, Bill. What I

:45:52.:45:57.

think is exciting is the way that the Belgians are looking quite good.

:45:58.:46:03.

They are not bad. I thought they might have some more pace about

:46:04.:46:12.

them. They are leading. Big Alex Hagood in the middle. He is giving

:46:13.:46:18.

his team words of wisdom and setting out the pattern for the next seven

:46:19.:46:27.

minutes half of rugby. The next 7.5 minutes of rugby determines whether

:46:28.:46:29.

they go into the quarterfinals or not. And that big culture and player

:46:30.:46:47.

Mathieu Verschelden, he scored their first try -- that take lad. Here

:46:48.:46:56.

they go, bringing it to the side. A little change of tactics.

:46:57.:47:05.

It is interesting in this line-out you have the little man being

:47:06.:47:25.

lifted. This lad is a leading runner. He is

:47:26.:47:44.

not the fastest but I think he is difficult get hold of.

:47:45.:47:51.

Another try for the visitors. There is a smile on the face of the

:47:52.:48:05.

foreigners. They have got their second breath and they are enjoying

:48:06.:48:09.

Melrose Sevens. They certainly are and they are enjoying sevens rugby

:48:10.:48:16.

as well. It is all about support. Coupe, with a name like that, you

:48:17.:48:20.

would expect him to be running very fast. I think we will see a lot more

:48:21.:48:26.

from him in the later ties. We are a minute and a half into the second

:48:27.:48:33.

period of play. 22.2 seven. Belgium are leading Aberdeen. They have

:48:34.:48:37.

worked very hard for it, this Belgian side. Aberdeen have

:48:38.:48:45.

travelled a long way. How did they get on in that first type? They beat

:48:46.:48:48.

Glasgow Hawks in their opening tie this afternoon. They have not gone

:48:49.:48:50.

away entirely empty-handed. A chance here for Mathieu

:48:51.:49:02.

Verschelden. The big lad is away again. Vincent heart is in at the

:49:03.:49:09.

corner. Yet another try for the visitors. They show their faces now

:49:10.:49:16.

as they put their game together. Vincent heart. They make it look

:49:17.:49:17.

quite easy at the moment. Still a bit to do. Come on, Doddie,

:49:18.:49:34.

tell me about great sidesteps you did in your career. I don't think

:49:35.:49:44.

there is any footage of that, Bill. We talk about sidesteps as well but

:49:45.:49:48.

another thing we saw today which is nice to see if a player of today

:49:49.:49:53.

carrying a ball in two hands. In our day it was one hand round the back.

:49:54.:49:59.

You can see the captain just behind the ball at the kick-offs, he is

:50:00.:50:03.

giving some kind of signal to his players, and it is working

:50:04.:50:07.

exceedingly well. They have won the ball back again. Here is this big

:50:08.:50:13.

strong runner going through now. That is another great try. He is

:50:14.:50:21.

another one of these Belgians who can run a bit and he is strong with

:50:22.:50:27.

it. No messing around when he gets a sniff of the whitewash, as they say.

:50:28.:50:33.

He is strong, Bill, because he is allowed to be strong. Aberdeen are

:50:34.:50:37.

not making their tackles at the moment. If you do not make tackles,

:50:38.:50:42.

you will be punished. The scoreline tells that tale. You can see it was

:50:43.:50:48.

well competed, not offside. The ball is forward there. One missed tackle,

:50:49.:50:57.

no support, no runner behind. It is a different type of kick-off. A low

:50:58.:51:04.

bouncing kick-off. They have to come back and Aberdeen have the restart

:51:05.:51:12.

and away they go. What a good piece of running here stop they have got

:51:13.:51:28.

the try. That is just reward for a fabulous individual effort. That is

:51:29.:51:34.

worth seeing again. He is certainly the man of Aberdeen at the moment.

:51:35.:51:42.

He was going forward and forward. He had the whole of Belgium on his back

:51:43.:51:46.

at one stage but still managed to roll over. Nothing on here. No

:51:47.:51:51.

support around the bottom. Just himself and the Belgian team in

:51:52.:51:56.

front. A great bit of sidestep and shimmy. You can see how he transfers

:51:57.:52:03.

the ball from left to right hand. A magnificent try. There we are, the

:52:04.:52:08.

man of the moment, Jollands with that lovely try. The Belgian side

:52:09.:52:15.

are well ahead. The thing about sevens is you do not get any VAT

:52:16.:52:21.

replay which is why there is a touch judge to give the nod. He must have

:52:22.:52:28.

been happy with that. -- the key replay.

:52:29.:52:46.

The Belgians swamped that area. Another component of sevens, you

:52:47.:52:54.

have got to be a bit quicker on the ball. Aberdeen are a bit sluggish.

:52:55.:53:00.

The referee is smiling away in the middle but he does not have to do

:53:01.:53:05.

the running and tackling. I think he is showing off a little bit as well

:53:06.:53:09.

because I think he is speaking French did the Belgians which is a

:53:10.:53:15.

nice touch. Back infield it goes, Redmond with the ball, a great

:53:16.:53:22.

tackle there. Aberdeen playing some nice rugby when they get half a

:53:23.:53:27.

chance. When out on that far touchline, spreading the ball.

:53:28.:53:37.

Gilmore on the deck. There is the referee's Whistle indicating

:53:38.:53:41.

full-time in this tie. It is a comfy win in the end for Belgium. They

:53:42.:53:46.

have beaten Aberdeen. There is the scoreline on your screen. The

:53:47.:53:53.

referee just congratulating the players on their efforts and wishing

:53:54.:53:59.

them well for the next round. Belgium go through and they will

:54:00.:54:05.

meet Jed in the second quarterfinal. Yes, an excellent start. I am joined

:54:06.:54:12.

by one of their players. You must be pleased with how your team

:54:13.:54:17.

performed? It was very tough. It was an aim to get into this match and

:54:18.:54:21.

feel the atmosphere here in Aberdeen for the first tournament in Melrose

:54:22.:54:25.

so we are really happy. Tell me what it means for you and your Belgian

:54:26.:54:30.

team-mates to be here as part of this historic tournament? It is a

:54:31.:54:36.

real privilege to take part here will stop it is really a pleasure

:54:37.:54:39.

for us. Best of luck for the next round.

:54:40.:54:50.

Another of the invitation or sides now, it is the French up against the

:54:51.:54:59.

Watsonians. French peripatetic players. Many of them not sevens

:55:00.:55:02.

players, playing for clubs. The Watsonians are away

:55:03.:55:16.

straightaway. Rory steel keeps it alive to

:55:17.:55:40.

Ferguson. Watsonians no respect of reputation at all. The ball went

:55:41.:55:46.

forward but it will be offside said Mr Dickson, and that was a good way

:55:47.:55:53.

to start. Absolutely. Difficult for the French guest team. Bertram just

:55:54.:56:07.

ashes his way through to pretty ineffective French tackles, it has

:56:08.:56:12.

to be said. He just crashes across the line. Mark Bertram with the

:56:13.:56:17.

first try for Watsonians. They won last weekend and did not expect to

:56:18.:56:22.

make it look this easy. It is always difficult when you are dealing with

:56:23.:56:26.

a French team, whether it is the French national team or these

:56:27.:56:30.

invitational teams. The games suit how they play with 15th but it does

:56:31.:56:36.

not always transfer. Here is the try coming in. Bertram easily broke

:56:37.:56:44.

through two tackles and under the post. Conversion means it is 7-0

:56:45.:56:52.

now. OK, Drummond, Miller and Bertram

:56:53.:56:54.

already had an impact. A hard tackle by Rory Drummond.

:56:55.:57:13.

Seventise, let's see what they are made of. Lambert has it back.

:57:14.:57:21.

The French will have to be stung into some kind of action.

:57:22.:57:33.

Interesting when you saw the defence of Watsonians, because there was no

:57:34.:57:36.

contact area, some of the players were in the eye line of the French

:57:37.:57:40.

attacking teams, as they look to come back from left to right. The

:57:41.:57:47.

Watsonians players were setting up. That created the opportunity. The

:57:48.:57:51.

French have it. The ex-Stade Francais player passes

:57:52.:57:58.

it. It will be one of these games, it is

:57:59.:58:23.

as usual, you want the big invitational sides to show you

:58:24.:58:26.

something, you don't really want them to win. You want the local lads

:58:27.:58:31.

to beat them. If Watsonians can keep their act together, they have every

:58:32.:58:36.

chance. They are very well coached, with Andrew Kerr, an ex-Scotland

:58:37.:58:40.

sevens player as the manager and the next sevens player as the coach.

:58:41.:58:49.

That will be a scrum to Seventise. We know the first quarterfinal will

:58:50.:59:03.

be Edinburgh Accies against... This is one of the treats for the eye.

:59:04.:59:10.

Look at the TV spectators have in this competition which has been

:59:11.:59:16.

going in from 1883. It was this brand of sevens invented purely to

:59:17.:59:19.

make some money back in the olden days but it has been one of the

:59:20.:59:22.

great exports from this part of the world.

:59:23.:59:30.

that was almost man and ball but Watsonians showing a lot of patience

:59:31.:59:37.

building in their own 22. Nice step. The French seem to have upped their

:59:38.:59:43.

game, Davidson is collared, helped back by Ewan Miller. Keeping the

:59:44.:59:53.

ball alive. Bit more pressure. That was going backwards but the break is

:59:54.:59:59.

on. Drummond in support. Not enough people helping as Rory Steele it

:00:00.:00:08.

was, but he's earned a penalty which will be taken quickly by Ewan

:00:09.:00:15.

Miller. The ball into backhands. -- in two hands. Some of these tackles

:00:16.:00:22.

are close enough is good enough I think. Davidson. Does his best. Four

:00:23.:00:34.

against two if they keep their heads together. He has already scored a

:00:35.:00:41.

try, beyond one man, big handoff and that is the second. Against all

:00:42.:00:48.

expectations, taking on the glamour team from France. What you are

:00:49.:00:55.

seeing is a well-organised team, Watsonians playing as a team. He

:00:56.:01:02.

takes off, has a go at the sweeper, good handoff, dummy to create enough

:01:03.:01:07.

space and the final handoff to get over the line. Good individual

:01:08.:01:13.

finish but a team try. Had the patience to keep the ball under

:01:14.:01:16.

pressure in their own 22 and eventually gone the length of the

:01:17.:01:20.

field to get the score. At the moment it is advantage Watsonians.

:01:21.:01:27.

On the field, Parker was called up to the Scottish development squad I

:01:28.:01:35.

remember Keith Robertson telling me that pre-season training at Melrose

:01:36.:01:38.

was runner-up that hell, head left, run up the other one come back down.

:01:39.:01:46.

This view is stunning. -- run up that Hill. You can see how it

:01:47.:01:53.

nestles in such a beautiful location, this ground. Has a handoff

:01:54.:02:00.

like a piledriver, little forward pass and it is half-time. This is a

:02:01.:02:07.

game that Watsonians who won last week are dominating. You can see the

:02:08.:02:14.

invitational team have come together as an invitational team and are

:02:15.:02:22.

playing more as individuals. Watsonians are seeing this as a real

:02:23.:02:32.

focus, two, to Melrose and try to win the title -- to come to Melrose

:02:33.:02:40.

to try to win the title. These are the tries. Bertram with his fast,

:02:41.:02:50.

going through, no, this is the second, handoff on one, handoff on

:02:51.:02:54.

the second, keeps the ball alive and goes over the line. People watching,

:02:55.:03:00.

you are the former coach, what is the general tactic, is it about

:03:01.:03:08.

getting wide to wide? Watsonians are playing what I would call a

:03:09.:03:11.

traditional game of sevens, stretching the opposition, when they

:03:12.:03:16.

go into the wide channel they have got a runner coming short, trying to

:03:17.:03:21.

drag in an extra defender, if the defender doesn't come they will put

:03:22.:03:25.

a player through the space. If the defender does come they will pull it

:03:26.:03:31.

out and play the other way. Watsonians playing the traditional

:03:32.:03:38.

brand. We should say hello to all the youngsters from Ballymena rugby

:03:39.:03:45.

club, got to meet them in the hotel last night. What a break this is,

:03:46.:03:49.

Drummond all the way through. I cannot believe that try. Actually it

:03:50.:03:58.

was Scott McKee, went left-to-right -- Scott McLean. It came from the

:03:59.:04:05.

restart, Watsonians kicking off and winning the ball, came out to McKean

:04:06.:04:14.

who backed himself. To be fair it was a poor tackle by the French

:04:15.:04:17.

defender but the great finish by McKean. Unfortunately conversion

:04:18.:04:28.

drops to the right-hand side. We should not say this, but the

:04:29.:04:33.

tackling has been poor, the French tackling, you want to put somebody

:04:34.:04:39.

on the ground if they are attacking. France are renowned for the ball in

:04:40.:04:42.

hand and having the player, you would think sevens would suit them

:04:43.:04:46.

but 50% of the game is defending and they don't look keen to be doing

:04:47.:04:51.

that. This could be the first try by the French team. Gavin Parker, from

:04:52.:05:01.

Exeter, did well to take it up that right-hand side. You feel the

:05:02.:05:09.

French, for the sake of pride, have to get back into this match. Long

:05:10.:05:18.

ball. Just held up. Quick ball. Could this be a run in? Fraser,

:05:19.:05:26.

there is the try. Cambridge University, playing for the French

:05:27.:05:29.

invitational team, gives them a little bit of pride. It was a good

:05:30.:05:34.

take by Gavin Parker down the right-hand side, good defence by

:05:35.:05:46.

Watsonians. Managed to score that try, now it's interesting, 17-7 with

:05:47.:05:51.

five minutes to go, if the French team score next it's all to play

:05:52.:05:57.

for. Went out to the left, tackle, held up, manage to get the ball

:05:58.:06:02.

back, good ruck, comes to Fraser, the little outside break. In between

:06:03.:06:10.

two bodies. For in a half minutes left and the kick-off, you can hear

:06:11.:06:15.

his team-mates not happy. It's the Watsonians Dolly -- tap. Has handed

:06:16.:06:29.

the momentum straight back to Watsonians. Seventise On the

:06:30.:06:37.

ascendancy with the score, the restart but it go straight out.

:06:38.:06:52.

Fraser comes off, the try scorer. Watsonians. Too slow.

:06:53.:07:11.

Not happy. This is the chance for revenge, the big man who thinks he's

:07:12.:07:28.

just been punched. Ways it off. Some or urgency, I think the French

:07:29.:07:31.

thought this would be easier than it is.

:07:32.:07:40.

He's isolated. This could be trouble. It will be a penalty. You

:07:41.:07:48.

have spoken about this a lot, if you go into contact by yourself you are

:07:49.:07:53.

going to get turned over. Yes, we spoken about it before, it's

:07:54.:08:03.

invitational team, Seventise. Here Watsonians are well organised bids

:08:04.:08:06.

were and putting them under pressure and the French are struggling to

:08:07.:08:13.

deal with it -- well-organised defensively. Lambert. The number

:08:14.:08:27.

six. Callum Black, of Edinburgh Accies, give it out wide, penning

:08:28.:08:33.

his ears back and if you get under the posts he gives his team a

:08:34.:08:38.

chance. Two minutes left, this will be 17-12, if the conversion goes

:08:39.:08:45.

17-14. They have totally changed their attitude. They have had the

:08:46.:08:52.

ball in hand and looking as though they are now up for the game. Good

:08:53.:09:02.

finish by the big man. Conversion, 17-14, all to play for in the last

:09:03.:09:05.

minute and a half. The kick-off is clinical. Good knee left, could not

:09:06.:09:12.

be caught and put the ball between the posts, vital kick-off now. Too

:09:13.:09:21.

far. Giving the ball straight back to Watsonians so they are in

:09:22.:09:24.

complete control. Taking it into the wide channel. Why do you want to

:09:25.:09:34.

play in the wide channel? Because it stretches the defence and it starts

:09:35.:09:37.

to create opportunities, Bertrand coming through on an inside line.

:09:38.:09:44.

Lazy pass away, Watsonians had everything in their grasp. Lambert

:09:45.:09:49.

with the kick and chase, this could be a turn up, gives it away. The

:09:50.:09:56.

French, this could be one of the great turnarounds in Melrose rugby

:09:57.:09:59.

because they looked as though they were a team here relaxing and now

:10:00.:10:06.

they are in the lead. Watsonians contributed to that themselves.

:10:07.:10:13.

Great vision, the kick through and the off-loads and well finished.

:10:14.:10:18.

19-17 with the conversion to follow and probably not enough time for the

:10:19.:10:24.

kick-off. You don't want to be too critical but it was their way

:10:25.:10:27.

Watsonians came out with the ball, they were not aggressive or decisive

:10:28.:10:32.

enough. You either need to go forward or keep hold of possession

:10:33.:10:35.

by backing off. Got caught doing neither and were punished. The game

:10:36.:10:42.

is not over, Watsonians have two win this and keep it. Taken up by Ewan

:10:43.:10:44.

Miller. Rory Steele. Out to Bertram. This is an incredible game.

:10:45.:11:09.

Ewan Miller. Wide channel, to wide channel. Bertram, halfway through,

:11:10.:11:14.

this could be incredible! They thought they were going to lose the

:11:15.:11:20.

game but Watsonians in the dying embers of what has been a bright

:11:21.:11:26.

match have sent the French out, the French superstars going out in the

:11:27.:11:32.

last move of the game. Great finish by Bertram, showed his power, real

:11:33.:11:41.

patience and discipline. Came wide, created the opportunity, back in,

:11:42.:11:45.

have a gap Bertram and he used his strength and power to go through and

:11:46.:11:50.

clinch the winning score. What a game that was and there are more of

:11:51.:11:57.

them to come. Seventise, the French invitational team are out. Let's

:11:58.:12:07.

join Andi Burke track-side. I have representatives of both teams, we

:12:08.:12:13.

will start with the French team manager, must be disappointing? Very

:12:14.:12:19.

cruel, they did a great job in the second half, very disappointed for

:12:20.:12:27.

the boys. Watsonians at a very good team so good luck for them for the

:12:28.:12:31.

rest of the tournament. Contrasting emotions, your boys pulled it out of

:12:32.:12:38.

the bag? We worked hard together, we knew they were going to be a tough

:12:39.:12:42.

opposition, it was about having the belief to work hard for each other.

:12:43.:12:46.

The defence was pretty solid and we got through towards the end luckily.

:12:47.:12:51.

Happy with the result, have to just keep working. Well done.

:12:52.:13:01.

COMMENTATOR: This is the sixth of the eight times in the second round,

:13:02.:13:05.

Melrose, the home side in white. A dropped pass right away.

:13:06.:13:33.

If pieces have gap he likes to have a go. Absolutely, he has got pace,

:13:34.:13:42.

determined to put on a show. Currie have played an earlier game and can

:13:43.:13:46.

use that to their advantage, Melrose coming in a bit cold and have been

:13:47.:13:52.

caught cold at the moment. Great run by big Travis Brody. Not quite

:13:53.:14:02.

making it. Ali Miller, if memory serves me correctly is a Scotland

:14:03.:14:16.

under 20 cap. Bruce Calderwood the throw, the man who calls the song,

:14:17.:14:25.

where he goes, he will have to go, but that was a very good chase back

:14:26.:14:31.

by Carrie. Particularly by Cameron Gray, using all his pace to get back

:14:32.:14:37.

and slow the Melrose attack. Out again along the line. Wild pass at

:14:38.:14:45.

the end, it breaks down when they pass goes slightly off target.

:14:46.:14:51.

Disappointing finish, good break by the Scotland sevens player, did not

:14:52.:14:55.

panic when he got in behind. Retained possession, good recycling,

:14:56.:15:02.

out wide, but unfortunately a poor pass to Ali Miller. Lovely line-out

:15:03.:15:10.

work again by Travis Brody, the big Auckland. Going back to New Zealand

:15:11.:15:18.

next week to continue his life as a police man in the Auckland police

:15:19.:15:25.

service. Lovely footwork. Good covering by Melrose. I have to say

:15:26.:15:37.

the Melrose guys were back very well, trying to get the line

:15:38.:15:43.

organised. Look at the wee man with the sidestep, look at him go. Almost

:15:44.:15:50.

through. Despairing tackle by Bruce Colvin. Good running again by

:15:51.:15:57.

Currie. Here goes big Brody, inside, outside. What a try for Currie.

:15:58.:16:06.

Lovely passing and teamwork in the build-up to the try. Very good

:16:07.:16:12.

patience by Charlie Shiel when the ball came out to that wide channel

:16:13.:16:19.

and he had nowhere to go. I would wide to big Brody, very strong, ball

:16:20.:16:24.

back inside and great support by Harvey elms to pick it up and a

:16:25.:16:30.

great finish. The conversion goes wide.

:16:31.:16:45.

This will be a great memory for him to take back to New Zealand, playing

:16:46.:16:54.

in the Melrose sevens. Melrose have the ball. Beautiful running. Nice

:16:55.:17:09.

stuff. I out to Colvin. Way he goes. Listen to the crowd getting behind

:17:10.:17:14.

the home team. Lovely linking up, Irvin Hess puts the foot down and

:17:15.:17:23.

away he goes. Lovely driver Melrose. -- lovely try for Melrose. Samper

:17:24.:17:34.

the conversion follows. Great finish. Interesting challenge, both

:17:35.:17:47.

of these teams playing fifteens last weekend in the play-offs and trying

:17:48.:17:54.

to transition quickly into sevens. Pace and power to go under the

:17:55.:18:01.

posts. It's the little burst of pace which takes you away from the

:18:02.:18:05.

incoming tackle which is very important. Nice restart, Melrose

:18:06.:18:09.

will get it, or will they? Yes they have. Early are knock-on by Melrose,

:18:10.:18:17.

they come together for the scrummage. Great aerial skills by

:18:18.:18:29.

Neil Irvin Hess. Harvey elms quickly down on the ball. Scrummage to

:18:30.:18:37.

Currie, chance to attack. He is Harvey elms again. This boy can run.

:18:38.:18:50.

Kind bounce for Currie, got them out with a bit of trouble. Look at that.

:18:51.:18:56.

Under pressure gets it back, here they come again. Melrose almost

:18:57.:19:12.

there. The try in the corner. Ali Miller gets the touchdown. Easy

:19:13.:19:22.

finish for Ali Miller, three or four metres, again, good work. Couple of

:19:23.:19:28.

turnovers by Melrose to Currie, Currie tried to play out of their

:19:29.:19:38.

own 22 and made them a mistake. Backed himself, the ball in two

:19:39.:19:45.

hands. Interesting, tackled, letting the ball go, picked it back up some

:19:46.:19:54.

made another few metres. And that is half-time. Ali Miller in the

:19:55.:19:55.

picture. Back to the studio. I am not in the studio, I am at the

:19:56.:20:07.

side of the pitch with Melrose legend Doddie Weir, Melrose ahead

:20:08.:20:13.

will make the crowd happy if they go and win? I think so, especially

:20:14.:20:19.

people from Melrose. Lovely to have a Borders team, there are many

:20:20.:20:26.

Borders team still in the competition which helps the

:20:27.:20:32.

atmosphere. Let's talk about the invitational teams, the Belgian

:20:33.:20:34.

international team look impressive, the French did not have it. They

:20:35.:20:39.

didn't, but Belgium did look very good, the way they are playing, they

:20:40.:20:44.

understand the game very good and had a great win in their first game.

:20:45.:20:49.

The French were just a bit under par but saying that Watsonians have done

:20:50.:20:54.

very well in the competition. They are on the way up at the moment, so

:20:55.:21:00.

they were against a hard team, no disgrace. The crowd were behind them

:21:01.:21:03.

but unfortunately they take no further part in this competition. I

:21:04.:21:08.

am not allowed to ask you about you winning this competition back when,

:21:09.:21:14.

the 1700s? I do have the medal, and I think I am winning the best

:21:15.:21:20.

addressed today. You think? Let's enjoy the second half. LAUGHTER

:21:21.:21:26.

COMMENTATOR: Would you listen to those two? The game back under way,

:21:27.:21:38.

Bruce Colvin gatherers. In the bright sunshine which has been with

:21:39.:21:42.

us all afternoon, no corner by Currie but the referee plays

:21:43.:21:49.

advantage. -- knock-on by Carrie. Change of pace, Harvey elms did

:21:50.:21:56.

well. Lovely running. Dropped it. Isn't that just like the thing, got

:21:57.:22:01.

in the clear and it squirted out of his grasp. I think he was thinking

:22:02.:22:10.

about how he would celebrate. On the deck, the vision to off-load it.

:22:11.:22:27.

I think George Taylor is the Melrose hooker in the middle of all that. He

:22:28.:22:37.

is back, just a young lad. You quite often get that, backs in fifteens

:22:38.:22:43.

will play in the forwards to try and get a bit more pace in there. Currie

:22:44.:22:49.

earned a penalty on halfway. Back it goes to Ainslie, the

:22:50.:23:11.

handoff. Currie building up patiently. This is better, three

:23:12.:23:20.

times he's been involved in this movement, McPhillips. Back it comes,

:23:21.:23:28.

Charlie Shiel, can he get another one, great score, great scorer for

:23:29.:23:34.

Robbie Neilson. Perfect teamwork, support play and not panicking under

:23:35.:23:37.

pressure. Keeping the ball alive and not allowing a contact point for

:23:38.:23:42.

Melrose to apply pressure. You saw Stephen Ainslie with some very good

:23:43.:23:49.

footwork, stepping inside twice and keeping the ball alive, Charlie

:23:50.:23:53.

Shiel with the dummy and then the great insight support. The difficult

:23:54.:23:58.

support line to most defend in sevens. Defenders tend to get lazy

:23:59.:24:00.

and nobody picked it up. Curried the game underway. -- Currie

:24:01.:24:15.

get the game underway. Floated pass almost intercepted. Handing off like

:24:16.:24:26.

Frank Bruno with a straight left. David Colvin if I am not mistaken.

:24:27.:24:37.

Melrose trying to find the gap. There is one. The man who will

:24:38.:24:47.

exploit it, Richard. Great off-load to keep it alive. Melrose have

:24:48.:24:56.

reorganised. Ali Miller can use it. He is strong and fast and look at

:24:57.:25:01.

him go, will he need support? He doesn't. Great piece of running by

:25:02.:25:08.

Ali Miller, trying to get behind the goal post for the easier conversion,

:25:09.:25:12.

he touches down just before he goes out over the dead-ball line. Good

:25:13.:25:18.

angle by Ali Miller to come on that line through the middle.

:25:19.:25:25.

Interesting, the under 20 number eight against the under 20 number

:25:26.:25:29.

scrum-half. The ball spinning past the left-hand

:25:30.:25:52.

upright, still a 5-point advantage for Melrose. Currie opened the

:25:53.:25:59.

scoring in the second half but Melrose have clawed their way back

:26:00.:26:08.

with two and a half minutes to go. This is a crucial time in this game.

:26:09.:26:17.

Travis Brody gets it. Trying to blow away a couple of would-be tacklers.

:26:18.:26:23.

Out to the left, out of a wide left-hand side. Bring it back again,

:26:24.:26:33.

chance here. They can go, Brody is the but Ainslie decided to go on his

:26:34.:26:44.

own. Penalty. Excellent tackle and got back to his feet over the ball.

:26:45.:26:48.

Currie did not fully sit there for a penalty and a chance for Melrose to

:26:49.:26:55.

slow things down a little bit. Only one score between the sides, it

:26:56.:27:00.

could go either way. This is David Colburn. Bruce Colvin. Ainslie has a

:27:01.:27:05.

flap with the tackle. Ainslie goes down with one hand like

:27:06.:27:25.

a big digger tried to pick it up. It's a fine line, did he need to try

:27:26.:27:30.

to off-load the ball? He's just given possession back to Currie with

:27:31.:27:35.

one last opportunity. Richard Smith and is on. -- Richard

:27:36.:27:44.

only got 50 metres to go, and you go. Here he goes, he will have a go

:27:45.:27:53.

at it. Such a big man. Currie lacking any real pace, having to

:27:54.:28:02.

work hard to create the score. It went forward, that was crucial

:28:03.:28:06.

because they have scored tries through very patient and long

:28:07.:28:10.

build-up and that was another one in the making. A real balance between

:28:11.:28:17.

team tries and individual tries, individual tries are great because

:28:18.:28:25.

they give you relief if you are attacking team. Unfortunately Currie

:28:26.:28:27.

don't look like they have the players, all the tries they have

:28:28.:28:32.

scored have been real team effort. Charlie Shiel at stand-off. Nelson

:28:33.:28:39.

at centre. And that's full-time, too late for a

:28:40.:28:57.

Currie, a win for Melrose. The host team go through into the

:28:58.:29:02.

quarterfinal. They will meet the winners of the previous tie, they

:29:03.:29:05.

will meet Watsonians and that will be a cracking game.

:29:06.:29:11.

I'm joined by the Melrose coach. John, the supporters will be very

:29:12.:29:19.

happy with that result? Yes, it's always a difficult tie. Currie were

:29:20.:29:25.

very good especially defensively and they'd make Mac -- they made us work

:29:26.:29:31.

really hard. Does it bring any added pressure, being the home side? It

:29:32.:29:37.

does, a lot of supporters come up to Melrose and they are not here for

:29:38.:29:40.

the rest of the year. We can probably start to relax a bit after

:29:41.:29:44.

that performance. Good luck in the next round.

:29:45.:29:48.

STUDIO Absolutely fantastic day here.

:29:49.:29:52.

Beautiful weather, lots of people there in fancy dress having a

:29:53.:29:58.

wonderful time. It's all going off here at the Greenyards. Lots of

:29:59.:30:03.

rugby today. COMMENTATOR: This is Marr against

:30:04.:30:23.

Herriots. This will be an interesting tie. They have played

:30:24.:30:29.

some good sevens, to be fair to them. This will be a good challenge

:30:30.:30:36.

for Heriots. Showed a bit of pace in the opening tie. Baird. Angus

:30:37.:30:54.

Johnstone. Then Johnstone with the scrum cap. Twins, I would have

:30:55.:30:58.

thought. Some big beef from the Heriots side. Tom Wilson is at

:30:59.:31:04.

scrum-half for Heriots, he has played here for Melrose in years

:31:05.:31:17.

gone by and he also had eight spell with... They are still attacking

:31:18.:31:22.

towards the 22. Colin Sturgeon just trying to wrong-foot -- wrong-foot

:31:23.:31:29.

the defence. Referee Neil Patterson says the ball has gone forward.

:31:30.:31:34.

Heriots ball. That is how close they are to be Heriots try line, only

:31:35.:31:42.

seven or eight metres away. They have had a really good season in the

:31:43.:31:47.

second tier of Scottish rugby and they are looking forward to a

:31:48.:31:48.

play-off, Wilson with the put-in. They have got Harry Boisseau out on

:31:49.:32:09.

the wing and he is a flyer. Great tackle, great covering tackle by

:32:10.:32:18.

Bickerstaff. Smith now, gives it to Mulligan. Mulligan with a sweatband

:32:19.:32:25.

on. A bit of defensive distress there but that covered back well.

:32:26.:32:32.

Heriots with the patient build-up. He goes through on his own, he's

:32:33.:32:38.

just made it! Not the tallest of men but he got the vital touch, first

:32:39.:32:48.

blood to Herriot. -- Heriots. A good break from their own half and

:32:49.:32:56.

finished strongly here. It takes a lot out of you, even running from a

:32:57.:33:04.

few yards in. Out on the field, very warm indeed. Certainly wasn't the

:33:05.:33:11.

best drop kick conversion there, a missed conversion, a 5-point ball

:33:12.:33:16.

game with Heriots going to restart and very interesting to see what

:33:17.:33:22.

they do with possession here. Tom Wilson just got a sniff of that half

:33:23.:33:26.

gap and he was through it just like that. Lovely view there. Looking

:33:27.:33:32.

from behind the goalposts down towards the River Tweed and. At the

:33:33.:33:38.

back is the big marquee, which hosts a lot of festive tea is and

:33:39.:33:46.

partying, Post-sevens partying. Bickerstaff gives it back to Baird,

:33:47.:33:53.

he is a wee wiry customer. Looks like they're going to have to pin

:33:54.:33:58.

him down and shackle him. They get it wide, good line. The Johnstone

:33:59.:34:04.

boys are there, Angus and Ben. Both of them wearing the black scrum

:34:05.:34:10.

caps. You will hear that a lot from the referees, tackle, release. When

:34:11.:34:13.

you make the tackle, you must release the ball to allow them to

:34:14.:34:19.

play the ball. Here is Fraser Grant. He thought he saw a door opened but

:34:20.:34:26.

the door closed thinly in his face. Bickerstaff with Johnstone outside

:34:27.:34:30.

him. This is a chance for Bickerstaff on the left and

:34:31.:34:34.

Johnstone will get the touchdown. That is the equaliser. They've

:34:35.:34:38.

obviously got a lot of support in this Melrose crowd, because that has

:34:39.:34:44.

raised a huge cheer. Lovely try. 5-5. Good finish, there. Pace and

:34:45.:34:51.

power down the outside. Good last-ditch tackle. It was Angus

:34:52.:35:04.

Johnson, number one, who got the touchdown. -- Johnston. That clock

:35:05.:35:12.

gives you a rough idea of how far they have to go, but look at the

:35:13.:35:16.

lay-off there. It might have been a bit of a wing and a prayer but Angus

:35:17.:35:28.

Johnston was there to take it. Some big men on this team, take a lot of

:35:29.:35:34.

stopping. There is Chris Mulligan. Heriots again working the ball into

:35:35.:35:52.

the space. Light footwork and acceleration, now Rae again, chance

:35:53.:35:58.

for Marr. A lot of tired bodies out there for Marr defensively. Great

:35:59.:36:06.

footwork but unfortunately the ball didn't get a hand and now a knock-on

:36:07.:36:11.

in their own 22. Stevie was speaking about Premiership rugby for the

:36:12.:36:19.

Heriots. It's a difference in what they have experienced as 15 A-side

:36:20.:36:24.

players in the season, but obviously Marr throwing all caution to the

:36:25.:36:27.

wind here and giving as good as they get. They have done themselves and

:36:28.:36:39.

their club proud, Marr, being here. Tom Watson forced into touch. The

:36:40.:36:43.

referee wants them to take that throw again. Three men in that

:36:44.:36:52.

line-out, sometimes they just have a couple. The throw in by Grant Baird,

:36:53.:37:00.

back it comes to Baird again. A change in tactics.

:37:01.:37:10.

Boisseau is back covering. Heriots have their chances. Wilson trying to

:37:11.:37:20.

size up their options, on the Heriots ten metres line. There is

:37:21.:37:24.

Carmichael, a long ball to the far side. He glides and just sort of

:37:25.:37:31.

slips through gaps, Mulligan. Didn't fancy bringing it this way.

:37:32.:37:42.

Boisseau looking for runners. A very good tackle. It was on Rudy

:37:43.:37:48.

Carmichael and he will know all about that one. Mulligan trying to

:37:49.:37:52.

break the tackle. Well played to Fraser Grant. Marr have not released

:37:53.:38:03.

the tackle, they have conceded the penalty. That was tight. Didn't

:38:04.:38:09.

release the ball when he was at the back of his feet and now it is a

:38:10.:38:17.

penalty. Here come Marr again. Wilson, the wee playmaker. Smith is

:38:18.:38:26.

on the inside. Clarke Smith, can he get there? After some very patient

:38:27.:38:35.

build-up work, Heriots get the try and that puts them ahead. You look

:38:36.:38:41.

at the body language of the Marr players now and they are very tired,

:38:42.:38:44.

looking forward to the half-time break. Rehydration is very important

:38:45.:38:53.

in any game, whether you are in the wet or the dry but particularly on a

:38:54.:38:57.

day like this. The players are perspiring a lot and it is very warm

:38:58.:39:07.

out there on the field. Played up through the middle, good off-load.

:39:08.:39:17.

It comes to the man on the outside. There is that inside pass, difficult

:39:18.:39:25.

to defend. It is a good score. He's such a big man. By the time you've

:39:26.:39:30.

tackled him two or three times your beginning to feel pretty tired.

:39:31.:39:36.

Looking at the crowd here, having a beautiful day, just in front of the

:39:37.:39:41.

main stand, the sun is shining, all enjoying themselves. They're not

:39:42.:39:44.

only enjoying what they are seeing on the pitch, they have got

:39:45.:39:49.

beautiful surroundings, as I said before. And the opportunity to be on

:39:50.:39:55.

television for them. There is a big television monitor, a huge screen

:39:56.:39:58.

down the way to the left. They can all see themselves on it but you can

:39:59.:40:05.

see they are enjoying it, sunglasses on and basking in the warmth. We are

:40:06.:40:15.

at 20 to four in the afternoon. This is Heriots kicking off in the second

:40:16.:40:21.

half against Marr. It is Marr's scrum half, Grant Baird, who gets

:40:22.:40:26.

the ball. Out it goes along the line. Doesn't quite have the

:40:27.:40:30.

blistering pace needed but he is persistent. Look at that, where are

:40:31.:40:40.

you? Get out the road! This wee lad, Grant Baird, knows what to do. This

:40:41.:40:45.

is a very good try in the making for Marr, if they can get there. Kyle

:40:46.:40:51.

Vallance, did he go into touch? There is Kyle Vallance, who has

:40:52.:40:56.

appeared as a sub. Well, did he make it or not? That is a big decision.

:40:57.:41:08.

The high tackle has prevented what would have been a definite score

:41:09.:41:14.

given. As a result, Neil Paterson has gone under the sticks and it's a

:41:15.:41:21.

penalty try. Five points to Marr, and Herriot 's may rue that, because

:41:22.:41:25.

the original try would have been out on the touchline but now' Marr has

:41:26.:41:35.

an opportunity to extend their lead. Colin Sturgeon with the conversion,

:41:36.:41:44.

14-10 to Marr. Here it is. Talk us through this one, then. Vallance has

:41:45.:41:51.

just come on, high tackle, no grounding. That's an interesting

:41:52.:42:00.

decision. That is obviously what the touch judge and the referee decided.

:42:01.:42:08.

They try would probably have been scored. The decision was correct.

:42:09.:42:17.

I'm sure there will be a debate about it later on. Now, what can

:42:18.:42:27.

they do? There are some tired lads out here. This wee fellow, Grant

:42:28.:42:33.

Baird, has really given a tremendous performance. Ben Johnston, as strong

:42:34.:42:46.

as a horse on the touchline there. You see the pressure starting to

:42:47.:42:52.

mount an Heriots, two breakdowns and two penalties in a row they have

:42:53.:42:59.

given away. There is a nervous looking Marr bench. He will be a bit

:43:00.:43:07.

worried. With his team leading by these four points. It is still a

:43:08.:43:13.

long time to go in seven aside rugby. Marr have got it again, Grant

:43:14.:43:22.

well tackled by Carmichael. The ball went back, or did it? The referee

:43:23.:43:33.

says it went forward. Not an thereby a Marr player, Bickerstaff I think

:43:34.:43:39.

it was. You just see that Marr are starting to get tired, no depth in

:43:40.:43:43.

their attack outside the original breakdown. You look at the Marr

:43:44.:43:46.

bench and they will be anxious. Here is Wilson, with the put-in.

:43:47.:44:02.

That is on the Heriots 22. The wee number ten at stand-off with the

:44:03.:44:11.

yellow boots, there he is. Marr pressing up. They have to make their

:44:12.:44:19.

tackles count. Patients may tell, as Mulligan puts it out this way. In

:44:20.:44:24.

field they go, Jordan Webster with deep as in. Mulligan. Marr doing be

:44:25.:44:33.

passing. They have got to get the ball back. Not this time, Heriots

:44:34.:44:39.

have done very well to get it out to Wilson. They have got 80 metres to

:44:40.:44:44.

go, a long way to go. They do, they are hoping for one piece of magic or

:44:45.:44:50.

one missed tackle. To be fair, Marr have defended really well but they

:44:51.:44:54.

have got to hold out. I bet with your time as Scottish coach you have

:44:55.:44:57.

been in a similar position, hoping for a piece of magic. Great tackle

:44:58.:45:05.

by Johnson on Mulligan. Marr takes his time and picks it up. Good

:45:06.:45:11.

tackle by the fresh lad who has come on. Difficult time here for Marr,

:45:12.:45:19.

they have to be very careful not to concede the penalty. That was Angus

:45:20.:45:24.

Johnston, out to his brother. Here they come again, the brothers in

:45:25.:45:29.

harmony. Come on come he says, get alongside me. As he got the legs to

:45:30.:45:34.

get there? Yes he has. What a brilliant piece of play by Angus

:45:35.:45:40.

Johnston and his brother Ben. Brilliant running by the Marr boys.

:45:41.:45:47.

That has put them ahead by 19 points to ten. You can see how much they

:45:48.:45:50.

enjoyed that, the two brothers together. Willing the other to go

:45:51.:45:58.

and keep running. No, you have it back, I'm not running 40 metres!

:45:59.:46:04.

Long strides by Angus Johnston, difficult to tackle. Suddenly it is

:46:05.:46:13.

21-10. You get folk who don't like to run the long distances but they

:46:14.:46:17.

are excellent playmakers. Neither of my brothers enjoyed running long

:46:18.:46:22.

distances playing rugby, either at school or when they were men! It is

:46:23.:46:29.

a long way away, 80 metres in front of you and one defender. That is a

:46:30.:46:35.

very comfy lead, 11 points, for Marr. Heriots up against it. Into

:46:36.:46:43.

the last minute. Out it comes to Boisseau, he might produce the bit

:46:44.:46:47.

of magic. What he taken out? I think so, penalty. Boisseau trying to

:46:48.:46:56.

create something, but the kick ahead and I think the two Marr boys just

:46:57.:47:09.

closed the gap. You want it as far up the field as possible. Simmons is

:47:10.:47:18.

the wee playmaker. John Ray in the middle of it. Putting unnecessary

:47:19.:47:24.

pressure on Tom Wilson, here's the captain. Can he score captain's try?

:47:25.:47:31.

A wee sidestep and a shimmy, lovely play. Great stuff from Boisseau,

:47:32.:47:37.

what a pass. Out the act door it went. That was a beautiful piece of

:47:38.:47:45.

play by Heriots. Brilliant work by Wilson, the captain. Stepped back

:47:46.:47:46.

inside. The score was converted and it looks

:47:47.:47:56.

like the referee is going to give them time from the restart. Well,

:47:57.:48:01.

we've seen some ties today which have been won at the death, so to

:48:02.:48:06.

speak. Will this be another one? It's going to be about the last

:48:07.:48:12.

play. Heriots have got the ball and that is what matters. The referee

:48:13.:48:21.

was very close to calling it as a maul and that would have been a

:48:22.:48:24.

turnover but they managed to get possession. I think they could have

:48:25.:48:32.

fought a bit harder to hold them up. Here come Heriots. Knight picked up

:48:33.:48:39.

by Mason. Going to feed it out. He has got Wilson out wide! The pass

:48:40.:48:45.

went all over the place! This is an important tackle. In the corner...

:48:46.:48:54.

Big, powerful lad. Heading for the corner. Heriots with the upper hand

:48:55.:48:57.

although they are trailing on the scoreline. There goes Webster. Out

:48:58.:49:04.

it comes, that is a vital tackle by Marr, and another couple of tackles

:49:05.:49:13.

by Marr. Oh! They have won their turnover but they have conceded a

:49:14.:49:17.

penalty. Great tackle but then they went off the field which did not

:49:18.:49:22.

allow Heriots to play. Unfortunately it's a penalty, so they are playing

:49:23.:49:31.

away. Heriots have had two chances and both times they have messed it

:49:32.:49:41.

up. Is Rae going to go through? Not if Marr have anything to say about

:49:42.:49:46.

it. What a catalogue of errors, what a pantomime. This is more like it,

:49:47.:49:50.

Webster in the corner for the winner! Is there! He has got it. He

:49:51.:49:58.

has got it! 22-21. What a finale to that tie. Look, it can be a cruel,

:49:59.:50:08.

cruel game. Marr would have thought they had the game won, Heriots

:50:09.:50:16.

scored that try and converted it. They have got possession back and

:50:17.:50:21.

they have retained it. Great off-load round the back. Great

:50:22.:50:28.

finish. So there we are, then. By the narrowest of margins, Heriots go

:50:29.:50:36.

through, having beaten Marr by 22 points to 21. That was a great tie.

:50:37.:50:41.

STUDIO Yes, real skin of the teeth stuff,

:50:42.:50:49.

Heriots through to the next round. Glasgow not here, they won the last

:50:50.:50:53.

two years and this was them in the final last year against Germany.

:50:54.:50:58.

They won that match 36-21. Absolutely fantastic side it was as

:50:59.:51:07.

well. Glasgow not there, but can Edinburgh do the same thing as

:51:08.:51:13.

Glasgow? The other pool team in Scotland. Can they do that here at

:51:14.:51:21.

the Greenyards? Direction GHA will have something to say about it!

:51:22.:51:24.

COMMENTATOR: They sure will. It's going to be GHA on the left. They

:51:25.:51:36.

have got Damien Hoyland, who can run rings past most people. That was

:51:37.:51:40.

some game we just watched, because we had both written Marr off. Very

:51:41.:51:49.

cruel game, John. You've got to go right to the end. A bit disappointed

:51:50.:51:54.

the referee played so many minutes at the end, but that is the game.

:51:55.:52:01.

We're on for a very exciting game. It's going to be interesting,

:52:02.:52:05.

because acrid temp too had a good game in the first round and they

:52:06.:52:08.

have got a game under their belt and Edinburgh are coming in what we call

:52:09.:52:15.

cold. Chris Dean, sevens player, has Hoyland outside him. The cow much

:52:16.:52:19.

more quickly the professionals are onto the ball. Old Scotland under 18

:52:20.:52:28.

player, great player in his day but now a physiotherapist. You've got

:52:29.:52:32.

the classic case here of the professionals up against the

:52:33.:52:35.

amateurs and everyone expects Edinburgh, as Glasgow did the last

:52:36.:52:37.

couple of years, to blow everyone away. But they going to have to win

:52:38.:52:42.

these games if they are to do that, as well. Watching Edinburgh last

:52:43.:52:54.

week, their defence, they are sharp. A bit of pace and a bit of

:52:55.:52:59.

confidence to play with. Dean just knocked on, nothing quite going

:53:00.:53:04.

Edinburgh's way. Beautiful day here at Melrose, sunny day. The perfect

:53:05.:53:10.

menu for what is the perfect game in the modern era now, the Olympic

:53:11.:53:14.

sport of sevens. Look at that, you cannot beat that shot, 10,000,

:53:15.:53:18.

11,000 people here basking in the spring sunshine. Edinburgh are the

:53:19.:53:24.

exception but a lot of the other teams here today will not have

:53:25.:53:26.

played in front of so many people and that just adds a wee bit of

:53:27.:53:30.

confidence, a wee bit of showboating. Good running here. That

:53:31.:53:37.

is an incredible break by the former sevens star himself, and the two

:53:38.:53:44.

brothers are on the field and he just went right the way through some

:53:45.:53:48.

pretty slack defending by the professionals, and the first try to

:53:49.:53:55.

GHA in the first two minutes. Very silky running. He was the stand-off

:53:56.:54:05.

at one stage in the Glasgow setup. There is a lot of rugby in Peter. As

:54:06.:54:13.

you mention, GHA are an amateur team. Good step, there. A bit of gas

:54:14.:54:21.

as well. That's what you need, a good combination of those things, a

:54:22.:54:26.

step and a bit of gas and able to hand off if required. But also,

:54:27.:54:33.

playing against a professional side, that sometimes obscure game by ten

:54:34.:54:40.

or 20%. Taken by Baird, who is on the ten metre line. That was George

:54:41.:54:49.

Turner. We saw George Turner play a great game down at Wales. Dean

:54:50.:54:55.

straight back into it. The power of Chris Dean, the captain, just too

:54:56.:55:00.

much strength for GHA. Turner started it and then Dean, the

:55:01.:55:04.

captain, eight good sevens player and making his name in the Edinburgh

:55:05.:55:14.

team. He has played a game and scored a try at the near post and

:55:15.:55:20.

that is what he'd deserved! Good goal! But that goal gets no points

:55:21.:55:29.

in this game, young man. Is that payback? Are you saying that's

:55:30.:55:32.

payback because he wasn't playing the game by the rolls, by the

:55:33.:55:38.

spirit? This is Turner. And there is the off-load, to Dean. Striding

:55:39.:55:46.

through the tackle. This is where Edinburgh support of the ball,

:55:47.:55:52.

running with the ball in hand. They are now into their stride, aren't

:55:53.:55:58.

they? Sam Baird. I think they are saying enough is enough and we will

:55:59.:56:02.

let you have the one try. They have got the likes of Baird and all these

:56:03.:56:09.

players, and there is the drop-kick. Edinburgh looking pretty comfortable

:56:10.:56:16.

now. Time off for injury at the moment. Sometimes this is what

:56:17.:56:22.

happens, strong running. We talk about it quite often hear on the

:56:23.:56:27.

commentary, it's the support that scored a try and they are certainly

:56:28.:56:32.

doing that well at the moment. Some strong runners breaking the first

:56:33.:56:36.

line of defence, the second one coming on at pace, at speed. Good

:56:37.:56:42.

angle taking the ball. Just too quick for GHA. Let's not forget...

:56:43.:56:50.

Oh, that's bad news. That is Grant Nielsen coming off. No one likes to

:56:51.:56:54.

see an injury and let's hope he's fine. Let's hope it's just a short

:56:55.:57:01.

time off from the game. Hoyland can really fly. Oh boy. Outside, that is

:57:02.:57:10.

pace. That just shows you, when you know you have got someone who can

:57:11.:57:15.

fly on the wing, beautiful try by Edinburgh, round the outside. Pace

:57:16.:57:20.

and power in abundance, there. Very simple, along the line, not much on

:57:21.:57:26.

and backing yourself, the ball in the correct hand for the handoff

:57:27.:57:30.

twice. There's nothing much you can do apart from make the tackles.

:57:31.:57:34.

Acrid temp to have got to not let their heads go down too much or this

:57:35.:57:42.

could be a big score. We have seen him as a good kicker in the

:57:43.:57:51.

fifteens, and Nathan Fauliss can run and pass and he has got a good route

:57:52.:57:57.

on him. The defence is good in the fifteens for Edinburgh, they won't

:57:58.:58:01.

miss too many tackles. Saying that, the first three minutes they were

:58:02.:58:04.

struggling. They have just found their pace.

:58:05.:58:07.

He goes through the pros again. Needs support, quick ball. Oh!

:58:08.:58:21.

Another break by Dean. Hoyland comes up the inside. He can dance on a

:58:22.:58:26.

sixpence. He looks up and found Turner, Turner there as well to

:58:27.:58:34.

break. Baird, going to be a penalty. Given back to Dean. Dean, the ball

:58:35.:58:38.

in the one hand, he skipped three people and off-loads. Straight

:58:39.:58:43.

through and Edinburgh again just showing enough class to put GHA a

:58:44.:58:51.

bit to the sword in this first half. The first half of this really key

:58:52.:58:55.

game. I think everyone will be watching, wanting to see how

:58:56.:58:58.

Edinburgh can do, will they be the same as the Warriors? They will be

:58:59.:59:01.

very confident in what they do. The drop outs have been spot on, his

:59:02.:59:15.

running and passing and his awareness. But that last try was set

:59:16.:59:20.

up by Strauss, he understands the game. Able to see where the ball was

:59:21.:59:26.

and able to win the ball back for Edinburgh Accies score. I am here

:59:27.:59:36.

with the Heriot's coach, his team sneaking through, you must have been

:59:37.:59:42.

relieved? The boys did well, just kept going, looks like we ran out of

:59:43.:59:46.

gas a little but kept going until the end which was pleasing. We think

:59:47.:59:52.

you might face Edinburgh, what have you made of their performance so

:59:53.:59:58.

far? They are being pushed all the way by GHA, they scored a good try

:59:59.:00:02.

at the start but Edinburgh look pretty strong. A lot of good

:00:03.:00:06.

ballplayers with pace and power. If it is Edinburgh we will have to try

:00:07.:00:11.

and match them. But it's not over yet, GHA are giving them a run for

:00:12.:00:15.

their money. Thank you for joining us.

:00:16.:00:21.

GHA playing right to left, the professionals against the amateurs.

:00:22.:00:28.

Coming up to 4pm here at the Greenyards, little venue. --

:00:29.:00:33.

beautiful little venue. That's what you do, you praise

:00:34.:00:48.

somebody, and just as we were seeing how well he is playing, and he has

:00:49.:00:52.

played really well, but just put that one straight into touch.

:00:53.:00:59.

Edinburgh ball. Cracking short ball to turn, brought to ground,

:01:00.:01:11.

knock-on. It will be a scrum to GHA. That's the difference in the sides,

:01:12.:01:16.

Edinburgh Accies in a lot of opportunities for themselves,

:01:17.:01:19.

understanding the game a little bit more, being more creative as well

:01:20.:01:22.

because they are offering space and when they come onto the ball they

:01:23.:01:26.

come on with power as well. But they do make mistakes. GHA have the ball.

:01:27.:01:39.

Straight out to the side to Tom Galbraith who is dumped by Turner.

:01:40.:01:43.

Penalty for not releasing. Up to half way almost. Grant Suttee

:01:44.:02:04.

cannot compete. You have two stay up, you cannot just Bridge in,

:02:05.:02:08.

cannot just dive in and put your body beyond the ball. Another

:02:09.:02:11.

penalty to GHA. Lots of running in him. Leeds

:02:12.:02:30.

helpers off the shoulder. -- needs. Straightens up and sees the posts,

:02:31.:02:34.

gets dragged down, beautiful off-load. This is GHA with the good

:02:35.:02:44.

fight back. That is the way to do it. Come on at pace, when you get in

:02:45.:02:50.

the tackle off-load. The referee allowing the pass off the ground,

:02:51.:02:58.

good supporting drive. It's all about the support. If you have the

:02:59.:03:03.

support in sevens you go on to score points. This time using his boot to

:03:04.:03:19.

good advantage. Just supported the ball carrier. We reckon 10,000,

:03:20.:03:28.

11,000 people of all ages, all well-behaved, enjoying this great

:03:29.:03:29.

spectacle. he started it and he finishes it at

:03:30.:04:00.

the other end for Edinburgh, great team try. Very good team try. Direct

:04:01.:04:08.

running at some stages by the big men but when they want to open it up

:04:09.:04:17.

they can. The hard work done 50, 60 yards by this man. He has been

:04:18.:04:24.

instrumental in making Edinburgh win this tie at the moment. 29-14, three

:04:25.:04:36.

minutes left. Too much power and pace, he started it and he finished

:04:37.:04:44.

it. When you were playing, you could think you were back in it, we

:04:45.:04:51.

thought GHA were back in it, but one try puts that distance and the heads

:04:52.:04:57.

go down. But they have still got a chance. I know Gregor Townsend says

:04:58.:05:00.

you don't count the try until really... I think he might be

:05:01.:05:08.

nicknamed Krakatoa because that was and there is the knock-on... This is

:05:09.:05:18.

when you get hit to win you don't know where it's coming from. He can

:05:19.:05:23.

see where it's coming from because the ball came from his left and the

:05:24.:05:29.

tackle came from blindside right. You also have to thank the person

:05:30.:05:35.

who passed you the ball! The hospital pass. Yes. Too easy, he's

:05:36.:05:43.

already scored one and look at the power. Just drifted out, ball to his

:05:44.:05:50.

right hand side, hand off with the left and he looks like a good

:05:51.:05:57.

player. He does and he is. Makes it so easy. I don't know about you but

:05:58.:06:08.

I think Edinburgh look like the best team so far. Belgium worked OK.

:06:09.:06:12.

Melrose will be fighting tooth and nail to stay in the competition. But

:06:13.:06:17.

so far Edinburgh look the most complete team, with that be fair? I

:06:18.:06:23.

would agree with that. You have stars in the side, people who can

:06:24.:06:27.

run, people who can handoff, people who have a lot of understanding in

:06:28.:06:33.

the game. Belgium could come into the game as well, that would be

:06:34.:06:39.

quite exciting and the Borders sides will be playing with grit and

:06:40.:06:43.

determination. This is the last second round game. Some very good

:06:44.:06:58.

teams in the quarterfinals. Makes his man turn, just too far to go.

:06:59.:07:13.

Well rescued. Strauss picks it up. David to Dean and he knows if he

:07:14.:07:19.

just keeps going, this is good courage by some of these GHA

:07:20.:07:21.

players. Chasing back. They can take some heart, the GHA

:07:22.:07:35.

players, not giving in. Behind but playing right to the final whistle.

:07:36.:07:41.

The only arbiter of time is the referee, I don't think he is hooked

:07:42.:07:46.

up to our time, it is his time they play too. They have just been told

:07:47.:07:53.

that is it. Edinburgh Castle winners, 36-14. -- Edinburgh

:07:54.:07:57.

comfortable winners. STUDIO: Edinburgh look like good

:07:58.:08:08.

winners, the most impressive teams so far. The second round is

:08:09.:08:12.

complete, the quarterfinal coming up very soon indeed.

:08:13.:08:34.

Watsonians won this competition 20 years ago this weekend, and they are

:08:35.:08:40.

going very well, knocking out the French side fairly comfortably.

:08:41.:08:47.

Heriot's getting through by the skin of their teeth.

:08:48.:09:07.

It all carries on to the live-action, people sitting in the

:09:08.:09:13.

sunshine and enjoying some fantastic play and you are enjoying it here on

:09:14.:09:18.

BBC Two Scotland. Stay with us all afternoon, this is the first of the

:09:19.:09:22.

quarterfinals, Edinburgh Accies against Gala. Gala last won this

:09:23.:09:33.

competition in 1999. COMMENTATOR: Both teams looking to

:09:34.:09:44.

get their name on the couple because they've not done it for some time.

:09:45.:09:50.

Trying to get away from you and Scott.

:09:51.:09:56.

Lovelier running. He's a very willowy runner, gliding through the

:09:57.:10:09.

gaps. Talented player, played full-back for Scotland under 18 's

:10:10.:10:16.

last year. Accies building up very patiently. Looking good. Just been

:10:17.:10:24.

forced out into the corner. That was a great tackle by James Parker. Look

:10:25.:10:30.

at the muscles on that guy. He is all power. It was that power which

:10:31.:10:40.

forced the touch in the corner. Great cover tackle by Jamie Parker.

:10:41.:10:47.

Looking at both the teams, slightly different, Gala look a lot more

:10:48.:10:54.

physical than Edinburgh Accies. There might be a contrast in styles

:10:55.:11:01.

here. Long throw over the tale came to nothing.

:11:02.:11:14.

Jack Patterson in the distance. One is a prop the other is the winger

:11:15.:11:23.

today. Chance for Accies up the narrow side. That could be him in at

:11:24.:11:30.

the corner. Good try for Accies. Came from a messy scrummage. Was a

:11:31.:11:39.

bit of turnover. Good vision by the former Scotland sevens player. Great

:11:40.:11:48.

food work, stood up the last defender and stretched out for the

:11:49.:11:56.

scorer. -- footwork. He's done it from the touchline. Young Ben

:11:57.:12:02.

Appleson adding another couple of points. He gets the try and he

:12:03.:12:11.

converts it. Great conversion from the touchline, great start for

:12:12.:12:18.

Accies. They're well having another one if Gala not careful. Scrummage

:12:19.:12:27.

five metres out. Ewan Scott to the rescue. This is identical position

:12:28.:12:35.

that the last score came from so interesting to see what Gala do to

:12:36.:12:38.

try to counter Accies on this occasion.

:12:39.:12:44.

The ball comes out again. Was it knocked on? I think it was.

:12:45.:12:56.

Interesting, Gala reckon may have the upper hand in the scrummage and

:12:57.:13:01.

had a go at the Edinburgh Accies scrum, pressure applied, some

:13:02.:13:05.

uncertainty as the ball came out. Didn't get down on the ball quick

:13:06.:13:14.

enough, turnover, Gala scrum. Here is Scott, he is a strong laddie.

:13:15.:13:21.

Lovely play, Craig dogs. The flick of the wrists to get the ball out to

:13:22.:13:26.

the far side, James Parker, crashing tackle by jack Patterson. Little

:13:27.:13:34.

shimmy and wiggle but not enough. Here is Scott. Accies backtracking

:13:35.:13:47.

as they get into space. Robson. He is either kicked it ahead or had it

:13:48.:13:50.

knocked out his grasp, could not quite see that the referee says play

:13:51.:13:52.

on. Seize the gap and goes through it,

:13:53.:14:03.

he is away. He can relax a little bit, but he doesn't know that. There

:14:04.:14:11.

we are, touching down under the crossbar. There we go, another try

:14:12.:14:18.

for Edinburgh Accies. Just shows the way the game can swing. Gala

:14:19.:14:24.

struggling, their pace man out injured for this tie. Got the ball

:14:25.:14:34.

in his own 22, stepped inside, saw the gap and managed to go 70, 80

:14:35.:14:43.

metres. Adds the conversion, full points again, 14-0. There is no

:14:44.:14:56.

substitution for pace in this game. Accies have got a few players who

:14:57.:15:04.

can go the length. Accies have won the penalty. It's all about

:15:05.:15:10.

possession, and angry words to the referee, back ten metres. Off they

:15:11.:15:14.

go. Gala having to do all the tackling.

:15:15.:15:36.

Accies in command and control. That is known as the agricultural belt in

:15:37.:15:44.

the Borders. Young Ben Appleson backing himself, straight through

:15:45.:15:51.

the gap. That is a high tackle. Brilliant running and a terrible

:15:52.:15:56.

tackle by Ewan Scott. An absolute shocker. It was high and

:15:57.:16:01.

unnecessary. Probably in the heat of the moment he's got to go. Correct

:16:02.:16:07.

decision by the referee. Ben Appleson making the break, just

:16:08.:16:14.

blindsided high tackle. Not for the faint-hearted. Rightly so the

:16:15.:16:21.

referee has dealt with that in the appropriate fashion. Two minutes in

:16:22.:16:27.

the sin-bin. Very difficult defending with six players, believe

:16:28.:16:31.

me. Good to see Ben Appleson backed up. Gets a round of applause from

:16:32.:16:38.

the spectators and an opportunity with the extra man for Edinburgh

:16:39.:16:44.

Accies. Clean through. Without the extra man, without the seventh man,

:16:45.:16:52.

the Gala defence is a bit leaky. 19-0 with the conversion to come

:16:53.:16:56.

from in front of the posts. Accies are striding away with this and we

:16:57.:17:00.

are still in the first half. The first of the quarterfinals.

:17:01.:17:06.

Difficult enough defending with seven players let alone six. What

:17:07.:17:11.

will be disappointing for a Gala is they did not make Accies work for

:17:12.:17:13.

the scorer. He is a great wee player, Alex

:17:14.:17:24.

Glasheen Eden. The extra two points are so

:17:25.:17:36.

important as well. Absolutely, we always said in sevens, 22 points was

:17:37.:17:41.

the key number, if you could get more than three scorers away. Gala

:17:42.:17:47.

in the huddle, they will be questioning how do you get back in

:17:48.:17:55.

this game. You have seven minutes, Accies have shown you can score

:17:56.:17:59.

three tries in seven minutes so Gala will be looking to get hold of the

:18:00.:18:03.

ball and set the tempo. Accies now the next score is critical survey

:18:04.:18:07.

will be talking about getting their hands on the ball, getting the next

:18:08.:18:12.

score and taking the game away from Gala. Gala have done most of the

:18:13.:18:23.

defending and it's a lot harder than attacking. As you can see from that

:18:24.:18:30.

glorious shot the weather is still holding here in Melrose. Ewan Scott

:18:31.:18:35.

who was sin-binned for a couple of minutes for a head high tackle. And

:18:36.:18:42.

that is the man who scored the last driver Edinburgh Accies. -- the last

:18:43.:18:49.

try for Edinburgh Accies. I don't think anybody would have thought

:18:50.:18:53.

this would be the score at half-time, Gala have it all to do

:18:54.:18:57.

but they have got runners and some good rugby players in the team.

:18:58.:19:02.

Parker is one of these runners. Patterson has him. Big tackle there.

:19:03.:19:14.

On Stevie Cairns. The touch judge has his flag up, good defence by

:19:15.:19:19.

Edinburgh Accies. Parker trying to use his power to breakthrough but

:19:20.:19:27.

solid defence, lineout for Accies. Lovely take by Accies. Jack

:19:28.:19:39.

Patterson, tackle by Robson, interception by Graham Spiers. Here

:19:40.:19:44.

come Gala. William tackle there. It was a tries -- try saver. Robson not

:19:45.:20:02.

quite sure which way to go. Tries to give the runaround but can't. The

:20:03.:20:07.

head goes back and the disappointment and exasperation.

:20:08.:20:11.

Work hard to try and create space because they are a man down. That's

:20:12.:20:17.

him coming back on now. Looks as though Ewan Scott will remain off

:20:18.:20:25.

the field. Dwayne Burrows replacing him. They are back up to full

:20:26.:20:36.

complement. Edinburgh Accies able to capitalise on Galashiels being a man

:20:37.:20:45.

down. Simon Fairbairn is on as number ten. Noted

:20:46.:20:51.

little sidestep. Brilliant interception. Gala still have,

:20:52.:21:01.

Burroughs, big and strong and relatively fresh. Here they come,

:21:02.:21:11.

Graham Spiers with pace. Lovely try by Graham Spiers for Gala. That is

:21:12.:21:16.

their first try in this quarterfinal, they need another two

:21:17.:21:20.

to get level or anywhere close to Edinburgh Accies. Good finish by

:21:21.:21:30.

Graham Spiers. Just over four minutes to go. 21-7, two converted

:21:31.:21:46.

tries in it. Just another short. It was a magnificent conversion. It was

:21:47.:21:56.

and they are critical as we said. What is a centre doing in the thick

:21:57.:22:00.

of that? He will be wondering that himself. That's the beauty of

:22:01.:22:07.

sevens, you need to be interchangeable, every player on the

:22:08.:22:09.

field needs to be able to deal with the kick-off. Takes it up, tackle by

:22:10.:22:21.

Craig Keddie who has come on as a replacement for Galashiels. Here

:22:22.:22:27.

goes Ben Appleson, that is brilliant running. The change of pace, little

:22:28.:22:33.

wiggle and one goal and then the change of pace. That surely has

:22:34.:22:39.

sealed Galashiels fate? What are try. Outstanding, tucking it on the

:22:40.:22:48.

left-hand and a little goose-step and under the post. His father

:22:49.:22:55.

played sevens for Scotland years ago and he will be proud to see that.

:22:56.:23:02.

He's a very exciting young player. Played for Scotland under 18's last

:23:03.:23:07.

week. Great to see him coming out here and expressing himself. And

:23:08.:23:11.

having the confidence in the senior game to do that sort of stuff is

:23:12.:23:15.

tremendous. Granted there is more space but he has the confidence to

:23:16.:23:20.

do it. What can Galashiels do now because that was a ball out of the

:23:21.:23:26.

blue. Accies have stolen the ball again. The whole of Gala waiting for

:23:27.:23:35.

them. Evans has come on for Accies, number ten. That looked as though it

:23:36.:23:44.

might have gone forward. Gala with advantage. Accies with the ball.

:23:45.:23:51.

Here they come again. Trying to get outside.

:23:52.:24:00.

Good pick-up, Graham Spiers, that is the right tactic, kick and chase.

:24:01.:24:08.

Graham Spiers has the pace you see. Evans doesn't. It's a long way, well

:24:09.:24:13.

the ball bounced kindly, watch it closely, he is there. Another great

:24:14.:24:21.

try by Graham Spiers for Gala. That might be a lifeline. Gala turned the

:24:22.:24:30.

ball over, Graham Spiers with great vision, knew the sweeper wasn't at

:24:31.:24:43.

home. And then great pace, and converted, 28-14 with a minute to

:24:44.:24:51.

go. Here, Gala again. Has to release. Just a rush of blood to the

:24:52.:25:01.

head. Very good defence by Accies to get over the ball. Had ago, got

:25:02.:25:07.

isolated, had no support so held onto the Accies got over the ball

:25:08.:25:17.

and that is probably the game. Accies again taking their time and

:25:18.:25:25.

working this ball the way they want. Gets the ball back cleanly, look at

:25:26.:25:34.

that, out it goes. They have a decent margin between them and Gala,

:25:35.:25:38.

so they bring on fresh legs to try to keep the tempo up, not do

:25:39.:25:45.

anything silly. Put down in a thumping tackle but Accies going

:25:46.:25:55.

away at the far touchline. Little one round the back. I don't think it

:25:56.:25:58.

was what he meant, penalty coming Accies way. Penalty out and a good

:25:59.:26:10.

victory. The Gala defender taking the Accies player without the ball

:26:11.:26:14.

so that was a penalty. Great victory for Accies, they are a young team

:26:15.:26:19.

but looking strong. Very convincing for Accies.

:26:20.:26:30.

Impressive style, is that your team in Top Gear or is there more to

:26:31.:26:40.

come? Hopefully there is more to come, second half of the first round

:26:41.:26:47.

proper we played really well, that was exceptional sevens. Half that

:26:48.:26:55.

team are under 20, just young boys, a couple of 17-year-olds, it's been

:26:56.:27:01.

great. Ben Appleson was very impressive, you look to have a

:27:02.:27:06.

special talent there. Looks like it, has just come back from Wales,

:27:07.:27:10.

playing under 18 is for Scotland, talented kid. Best of luck in the

:27:11.:27:13.

semifinals. Thank you. COMMENTATOR: Welcome to the second

:27:14.:27:26.

semifinal, a small borders town, Jed-Forest from Jedburgh playing

:27:27.:27:33.

right-to-left in the iconic blue up against Belgium in their national

:27:34.:27:39.

colours. This will be a great game because Belgium look good and to be

:27:40.:27:48.

fair Jed looked good as well. Strike runners are very important in the

:27:49.:27:52.

game of sevens, we are on for a very exciting game. You could also see

:27:53.:27:57.

that Jed was a country in its own. Back inside to Lewis Young, what a

:27:58.:28:13.

break. Just commanding display. I've seen him play here a few times and

:28:14.:28:17.

if you've not seen him play before, Lewis Young, he's got everything

:28:18.:28:22.

sevens player needs. Size and crucially he has and vision. Belgium

:28:23.:28:28.

went from a big hit, didn't wrap the hands around him, let him go and

:28:29.:28:32.

when you do that against this kind of man, the talent he's got, he's

:28:33.:28:38.

only going to go one way, to the line and score. Sometimes you can

:28:39.:28:44.

get mistaken for his brother, they look very alike and Campbell run.

:28:45.:28:47.

Luckily they have different numbers on their back.

:28:48.:28:57.

That was Lewis Young who played really well last year too. It is Jed

:28:58.:29:07.

up against the Belgians. The shadows just lengthening, as the ball goes

:29:08.:29:17.

skyward. They showed enough power to get through Aberdeen Grammar. Some

:29:18.:29:28.

really good tries in the early game the Belgium. Jed just making it

:29:29.:29:41.

difficult for the Belgians. He got the spark going for the Belgians in

:29:42.:29:45.

the first half and he did exactly the same there. Great tackle by

:29:46.:29:53.

Jedforest. You do that just to try to stop that off-load. Stop the

:29:54.:30:04.

strike coming in. A big front row for the Belgians. Into this wide

:30:05.:30:17.

expanse that Jed love so much. Just called for obstruction there.

:30:18.:30:24.

Harkness just looks on. The Belgians are powerful players but it's all

:30:25.:30:29.

about sevens expertise and it is Jed playing right to left. Hogg, It was.

:30:30.:30:40.

Out to Young on that right wing. Harkness always available. This is

:30:41.:30:48.

him now. Look at that, the ball in his left hand. Inside pass by

:30:49.:30:56.

Chisholm. Inside to the big front row.

:30:57.:31:12.

Off-load. That could have been a high tackle too. That is a couple of

:31:13.:31:21.

silly high tackles. Not moving away too quickly. A couple of high

:31:22.:31:33.

tackles and Vermont not happy at all, as is his right. He was just

:31:34.:31:40.

taken out. It is inexcusable there. No excuse for that whatsoever. His

:31:41.:31:48.

reaction is maybe not quite as quick as they should be but there was no

:31:49.:31:56.

excuse for that. I think they were trying to get the maul. It's going

:31:57.:32:05.

to be a Belgian ball. I think he was tackled early, going to be a penalty

:32:06.:32:12.

to Belgium. It's going to be a sin-binning. I think this was just

:32:13.:32:20.

tackling before the man had the ball. That just gives Loic enough

:32:21.:32:34.

space to get the Belgian try number two. He has been on the try sheet

:32:35.:32:55.

already. Jed have got a man in the sin-bin for two minutes, make the

:32:56.:32:59.

advantage count. He seems to be taking his time, Loic Lechien. Well

:33:00.:33:14.

spotted. Here is the penalty. Five and a half minutes gone, Jed 5-7

:33:15.:33:22.

Belgium. This is the try. It all came as the man was heading away,

:33:23.:33:27.

through the man, good try by Lechien, just taking advantage of

:33:28.:33:34.

the extra space. Young had his eyes on the kick. Lechien. Confident on

:33:35.:33:44.

the ball. He keeps changing pace, changing direction. Now to the big

:33:45.:33:51.

man on the far side, huge man. This could be over the line again and it

:33:52.:34:03.

is all Belgium now, isn't it? Is another's sin-binning. This is

:34:04.:34:10.

extraordinary. This is going to be Jed down to five men for two cynical

:34:11.:34:17.

penalties. The big man goes for it, well tackled. Hold him up, don't let

:34:18.:34:28.

the ball out. Justifiably a yellow card. That is two men down. This is

:34:29.:34:39.

the playmaker. Knocked on by the Belgian. Harkness. Can Jed conjure

:34:40.:34:44.

something out of real adversity? Dancing behind their own try line.

:34:45.:34:49.

This could be weight of numbers, Belgium trying to get the ball. This

:34:50.:34:52.

is extraordinary, five against seven. Five against seven, I have

:34:53.:35:01.

never seen this before in my life. This is Loic Lechien, Harkness, his

:35:02.:35:11.

side two men down. He can afford to waste a bit of time! If ever there

:35:12.:35:18.

was a bit of time to waste, putting the ball between the posts, this is

:35:19.:35:22.

it. He's been sporting he's put the ball down now. He's been there and

:35:23.:35:27.

done it before, he knows what it's all about. So,

:35:28.:35:41.

Jed two men down and winning at half-time against Belgium. Finding

:35:42.:35:56.

quick man but when you have got five players against seven, you can

:35:57.:36:04.

afford one against one. Belgium should be kicking themselves for

:36:05.:36:12.

that one. I'm sure they will be. It has been a nice warm sunny day and

:36:13.:36:16.

we have got some great games coming out. Edinburgh Accies through to the

:36:17.:36:23.

semifinal. Next up, what Sony and against Melrose. And then an all

:36:24.:36:28.

conquering Edinburgh side. We will bring you the final. This is one of

:36:29.:36:34.

the great tournaments in the world. One of the is that we don't have

:36:35.:36:39.

though many of the all conquering overseas teams who come here, it's

:36:40.:36:49.

much more to do with clubs like Jed, Melrose, bringing your Edinburghs

:36:50.:36:52.

against an international team like Belgium. Aljamaaheer fought a good

:36:53.:37:02.

time, it gives the local clubs a chance. You can see the supporters

:37:03.:37:12.

like that, they love the minnows. What is exciting, we mentioned

:37:13.:37:16.

before, the fact that we have had five hours of rugby and they are

:37:17.:37:19.

still keen to keep watching and excited. Your point before the match

:37:20.:37:25.

was, you could watch this all day. Look at the crowd, it's a different

:37:26.:37:32.

menu every time. Two teams come on and play different ways. It's a

:37:33.:37:36.

different menu. A very exciting menu it is as well. Gregor Young. The

:37:37.:37:50.

ball taken back. Jed trying to turn this over, the big man sends it out.

:37:51.:38:00.

Van Trappen Hands off one man. It's going to be a scrum to Jed, they

:38:01.:38:07.

will just take their time and tried to run down the clock. Now six men

:38:08.:38:16.

against seven. He's coming back like a scalded rabbit. There he is.

:38:17.:38:26.

Jed... I've never seen that before. Five men... Belgium have to look at

:38:27.:38:33.

the way they are playing and how they allow that to happen. Every bit

:38:34.:38:45.

of the game is important but we are entering into an important phase

:38:46.:38:51.

now. If Belgian get a try now, they are right back in the game. If Jed

:38:52.:38:58.

can get back on the pitch, it's doubly difficult. It does, and also

:38:59.:39:05.

the conversion. Try and keep them in the corners. He has a Mac!

:39:06.:39:14.

-- he has a mesmeric sidestep, Harkness. One of the great sevens

:39:15.:39:28.

players. We've got to stop praising players sometimes like that because

:39:29.:39:31.

when we do, they make a massive mistake. My friend to the left's

:39:32.:39:41.

heart is going... This is good, this is a good game. We talked about

:39:42.:39:49.

Fraser Harkness before and you mention it, not built for sevens but

:39:50.:39:57.

it's lovely to see from a sevens player. Van Trappen steps inside,

:39:58.:40:06.

the Belgian has got a try back. So, Belgian, it was 12-7 and it is now

:40:07.:40:15.

12-12. They are on the second grade circuit, aren't they? Some of these

:40:16.:40:18.

players are pretty good and they were a bit overawed by the start

:40:19.:40:24.

that Jed had, but they are fighting back. Unfortunately there is no real

:40:25.:40:32.

creation there. Van Trappen did very well. But it was just a loose tackle

:40:33.:40:42.

by Jed and they can't afford to do that at this level. If you do, this

:40:43.:40:48.

is what happens. I remember the Glasgow Warriors coach would say you

:40:49.:40:52.

can coach anything, but in rugby it comes down to a dropped pass or a

:40:53.:40:57.

missed tackle. Most turnovers are a dropped pass or a missed tackle. And

:40:58.:41:02.

we saw there, that try came down to a missed tackle. Chisholm. Young.

:41:03.:41:23.

Harkness is on the right wing. Here he is, Fraser Harkness. He needs a

:41:24.:41:28.

moment of magic. Lovely, brought in three men.

:41:29.:41:38.

Callan, it was. Two Lewis Young. It's going to be a try. The

:41:39.:41:48.

speedster on the left wing just flying in. That is a cracking way to

:41:49.:41:55.

get back into this match. You thought the boy Young was going to

:41:56.:42:02.

take it on but no, someone faster than him by the looks of things. He

:42:03.:42:08.

has certainly shown he can move. It's been exciting, hasn't it? In

:42:09.:42:21.

the pink and white, very noticeable. And it is between the posts, 19-14.

:42:22.:42:27.

Roscoe showing a real turn of pace down that left-wing. A couple of

:42:28.:42:35.

minutes left, a 5-point game. Belgium could -- if Belgian could

:42:36.:42:41.

score one goal and convert, they would be in the lead. Can they get

:42:42.:42:47.

this ball, man on ball? Well jumped. Well read, though. I was about to

:42:48.:43:00.

say... Turnover by Harkness! Gregor Young just tackle, what a tackle

:43:01.:43:08.

that was. Unfortunate because Gill was just inside him. Write down the

:43:09.:43:15.

wing, there we go. Stole the ball, Harkness they're called for it,

:43:16.:43:20.

great tap tackle to save the day for Belgium. I tell you, I think Jed's

:43:21.:43:30.

broken field players very good. Lewis Young to the flyer again and

:43:31.:43:36.

another try this time from Roscoe, his second in a couple of minutes.

:43:37.:43:42.

Jed stamping their authority on this tie, extraordinary turnaround. You

:43:43.:43:46.

have to wonder what he was doing in the first half. He must have been

:43:47.:43:51.

looking at the crowd or something. He didn't start the game, that's

:43:52.:43:58.

maybe why. They brought him on at half-time! Great move, great

:43:59.:44:03.

substitution there, because he certainly changed the game. If he

:44:04.:44:08.

has got the ball, he knows the way to go. That will be beyond all doubt

:44:09.:44:18.

now and as Stevie Gemmill says, you cannot beat pace. That man has run

:44:19.:44:23.

into try is. Watch this. Still work to do. The Belgian winger had the

:44:24.:44:34.

pace. Great to see a player run round the outside, have the

:44:35.:44:38.

confidence to do that. Belgium can't win this game now. Harkness just

:44:39.:44:46.

winning the tackle. Well done Jed, through to the first semifinal, they

:44:47.:44:52.

play Edinburgh Accies and that will be a cracker. Van Trappen goes down

:44:53.:45:02.

that wing. Edinburgh trying to get the ball back and they do. The

:45:03.:45:11.

Georgian player. Big, strong handoff.

:45:12.:45:19.

Belgium just trying to salvage a bit of reputation. He is at the heart of

:45:20.:45:31.

everything good that Belgium have been doing. It would be fitting if

:45:32.:45:35.

he got the last try. Could be, with a chip through. The referee will

:45:36.:45:42.

bring this game... That is a great game because that is great for the

:45:43.:45:47.

competition, a local team, Jed, beating a country, Belgium.

:45:48.:45:53.

Well, there we are in this incredible tournament. Jedforest

:45:54.:46:02.

24-14 Belgium. STUDIO

:46:03.:46:06.

A fantastic win for Jedforest up against Belgium. Stevie Gemmill has

:46:07.:46:10.

joined me. What has been particularly impressive about the

:46:11.:46:14.

quarterfinals we've seen so far? Pakistan a very young team.

:46:15.:46:18.

-- Edinburgh Accies are a very young team.

:46:19.:46:24.

We see him here, individual skill, gas, everything. Great runner. Two

:46:25.:46:32.

Hanson early on to draw the defence on and then when he decided to go,

:46:33.:46:36.

he put the ball in one hand. Exciting player and it's great like

:46:37.:46:40.

somebody -- that summary like that can come in and perform on this

:46:41.:46:45.

stage. One thing really impressive about Jed's performance, they were

:46:46.:46:50.

two players down at one point and they managed to score a try. Very

:46:51.:46:55.

unusual. Unusual to have two sin-bins in a game but very unusual

:46:56.:47:00.

to score when you are two players down. Great for them and great for

:47:01.:47:07.

the town to beat a country. Absolutely. Looking forward to this

:47:08.:47:11.

one. What Sony and is up against Melrose.

:47:12.:47:19.

-- Watsonians. Look at that, what a handoff. Is that Rory Drummond? It

:47:20.:47:32.

is. That is the 117th try of the competition. Tries are the great

:47:33.:47:40.

coinage of rugby and my goodness we have had a feud this afternoon. -- a

:47:41.:47:49.

few. Good start by Watsonians. Not even a minute on the clock. Melrose

:47:50.:47:55.

back to wearing their traditional black top. They won't be happy with

:47:56.:48:01.

that. That is the problem sometimes, you just go to tackle that bit too

:48:02.:48:10.

hi, you just get the shoulder. Trying to fight off Drummond,

:48:11.:48:22.

Drummond coming a bit higher. Just a bit of a mix-up. Trying to find a

:48:23.:48:27.

loophole in the Watsonians midfield defence. That is at the Melrose ten.

:48:28.:48:39.

Colvin. To the far side. This is George Taylor. Melrose have changed

:48:40.:48:43.

their jerseys and their numbers, their numbers are much easier to see

:48:44.:48:49.

this time, I have to say. This might just be the opportunity they have

:48:50.:48:55.

been waiting for. Talking about the numbers on the jersey, that might

:48:56.:48:59.

just be a sign of age, young man! Chance here, great running by Ali

:49:00.:49:11.

Miller. Try, surely? Down in the corner and Evan Hess gets the

:49:12.:49:16.

touchdown but Miller did all the donkey work. Good assist, possibly

:49:17.:49:24.

makes up for his initial weave when trying to tackle. Going too hi in

:49:25.:49:28.

the tackle. Evan Hess in the corner. The conversion attempt, you can see

:49:29.:49:46.

the packed ranks of spectators. There is Richard Milne, who was

:49:47.:49:52.

unsuccessful with that kick, and Hess who got the try. This is where

:49:53.:50:00.

it came about. Not sure whether it was his man or not. Good running

:50:01.:50:07.

through the first phase. Look at this! This is tremendous running.

:50:08.:50:14.

This is Scott McKean, for Watsonians. That is a bullion piece

:50:15.:50:19.

of rugby sevens from Watsonians. Now, has he got the ball down? -- a

:50:20.:50:25.

brilliant piece of rugby Evans. The drive is given. The drive is given.

:50:26.:50:28.

-- the try is given. No sooner do Watsonians strike than Melrose

:50:29.:50:39.

strike back. That is the sign of a really good team. I'm not sure where

:50:40.:50:45.

it came from. Oh yes, just not quite taking the kick-off. Can't dispute

:50:46.:50:58.

that one. In sevens, there is no video to go to, no slow Mo. We have

:50:59.:51:05.

it, but the referee doesn't. That is the point you're making. That is the

:51:06.:51:10.

point, yes. We can see it but he can't. The end goal judge was quite

:51:11.:51:18.

adamant that the try had been scored. There is another knock-down

:51:19.:51:23.

from Watsonians, from the kick-off. Trying to re-gain possession. This

:51:24.:51:27.

is going to be a great 14 minutes of seven aside rugby. Melrose want to

:51:28.:51:33.

stay in this game, they've got to tighten up their kick-offs. That is

:51:34.:51:36.

two very slack ones so far. Mark Bertrand polices him very

:51:37.:51:53.

closely. Miller, Godsmark. Into trouble and then ran out of it

:51:54.:52:03.

again. Hess. Colvin. A wriggle from Godsmark outside on the left. And

:52:04.:52:11.

the referee is bringing them all the way back for some misdemeanour, a

:52:12.:52:19.

high tackle. I wonder if we can see that again, but that was the saviour

:52:20.:52:26.

for Melrose. That would have gone the length, one would have thought.

:52:27.:52:30.

A high tackle. All the same, penalty, ball to Melrose. Colvin is

:52:31.:52:40.

the mastermind of all the attacks. A change of direction. This is George

:52:41.:52:47.

Taylor. Taylor is away. Taylor is away for Melrose, the posts. A great

:52:48.:52:53.

try from the youngster. This is going from end to end, the pendulum

:52:54.:52:59.

is swinging back and forward, and George Taylor has got Melrose back

:53:00.:53:02.

into this game and these folks on the terraces are delighted. They

:53:03.:53:08.

certainly are and so are we in the commentary box to see them going

:53:09.:53:15.

well. Well done, good try. Came at the right time. Good, strong

:53:16.:53:23.

running. Coming up to half time, seven minutes each way. They will

:53:24.:53:27.

play a ten minutes each way final. Richard Milne popped it over, it is

:53:28.:53:34.

12-12. Here is the man who converted that try. He just has a look at the

:53:35.:53:47.

opposition and then sizes them up. The sidestep was magical and that is

:53:48.:53:54.

brilliant rugby! They should replay that time and time again because the

:53:55.:54:01.

sidestep is out of this world. Going to make the most of the opportunity

:54:02.:54:09.

there. I think we missed the sidestep, just before that. Still a

:54:10.:54:15.

lot to do but he comes across well. Well done, over in the corner.

:54:16.:54:20.

Fights will try just before half-time. Lovely try, the

:54:21.:54:24.

opposition could do nothing once he sidestepped here. He has had a thing

:54:25.:54:30.

with this left-hand goalpost today, he has put the ball past it several

:54:31.:54:35.

times but he won't be too bothered about that at the moment because the

:54:36.:54:37.

scoreboard shows that as a result of this try, Melrose are leading at the

:54:38.:54:44.

turn by 17-12. There it is, look at that. Like a ballet dancer.

:54:45.:54:48.

Beautiful balance and over he goes. What a score. There we are. They

:54:49.:54:55.

needed the breather at half-time after all that effort, do they not?

:54:56.:55:01.

They certainly do. Very important to score just before half-time. I have

:55:02.:55:10.

to say, the two points could be vital. At the moment Melrose are one

:55:11.:55:19.

point in front, the home team. It could be vital at the end of the

:55:20.:55:24.

second half. The lad who has impressed me with the convergence

:55:25.:55:29.

today, he has scored a lot of very difficult ones. Mark Bertrand,

:55:30.:55:35.

number three, just off to the writer of the shop, he has been one of the

:55:36.:55:39.

main players, strong runner, good tackler. The cat that backdrop, is

:55:40.:55:55.

that not just perfect? They have had a lot of hard games and they are

:55:56.:56:00.

certainly in a hard game against Watsonians at the moment. They are

:56:01.:56:05.

in deed, and Watsonians to get the game under why and he does just

:56:06.:56:10.

that. Almost caught, there. Goodness me. That was Euan Miller, who was

:56:11.:56:17.

right in for that one. He was almost clean through. Certainly, you can't

:56:18.:56:26.

allow teams to come forward and get confidence like that. Melrose have

:56:27.:56:29.

been a bit disappointing in the way they have challenged and received

:56:30.:56:33.

kick-offs. That was just unfortunate, that knock-on.

:56:34.:56:40.

What has he got left in the tank after that fabulous last try? Not

:56:41.:56:48.

much at the moment. It is the week kick past. Ali Miller, only 80

:56:49.:56:56.

metres to go, lad! Can you do it? Let's just watch. Continuity, here.

:56:57.:57:04.

Melrose playing some very good rugby. It is Watsonians who get the

:57:05.:57:12.

penalty and away they go again, Ferguson. Drummond. The big guy who

:57:13.:57:22.

opened the scoring. Chalmers, Andrew Chalmers. Rory Drummond, big Fifer.

:57:23.:57:30.

That is a big knock-on by Rory steel. Having a little tete a tete.

:57:31.:57:42.

That's not allowed in today's game but it's nice to see sometimes

:57:43.:57:45.

because it means quite a lot. All handbags at dawn. It's funny when

:57:46.:57:53.

you see all the wee boys come flying in from the outside. I could imagine

:57:54.:57:58.

they would go the other way, but the game resumes. Colvin, Godsmark. What

:57:59.:58:08.

can he do out here? He's being policed very carefully by Scott

:58:09.:58:13.

McKean. Milne doesn't have the pace of yesteryear but he has got the

:58:14.:58:18.

head. Here is Miller, he's got the lungs, he's got the engine! So has

:58:19.:58:26.

Evan Hess! Look at this for Melrose. This gets them further ahead. That

:58:27.:58:30.

is a great try, engineered by Richard Milne but finished off by

:58:31.:58:38.

Evan Hess.. Brilliant domination. Worked well in the first half and he

:58:39.:58:43.

has done well in the second half. He is finding the gaps well. You find

:58:44.:58:51.

there wasn't enough space on the outside, cutting inside, off his

:58:52.:58:55.

wing. Being able to talk to each other. The combination was an

:58:56.:58:59.

classic here. He knew exactly where he was and it was just an easy run

:59:00.:59:06.

in. To plenty of time for Watsonians to get back into this game. Richard

:59:07.:59:11.

Milne popped over the conversion. You can see at the top of your

:59:12.:59:19.

screen, Melrose lead 24-12. Melrose last won disc in 2011 when they beat

:59:20.:59:26.

Hamilton in the final, 35-17. -- last won this competition. Scott

:59:27.:59:34.

McKean, the flyer, up the left touchline. Back infield. Cagey staff

:59:35.:59:35.

at the moment. This boy is a good player, Ewan

:59:36.:59:47.

Miller. Can he off-load and get it back? There it is. Fergusson, along

:59:48.:59:57.

the line. McKean with the sidestep, look at this. That is one of the

:59:58.:00:03.

great glories of seven when you see somebody with a burst of pace taking

:00:04.:00:08.

it away from the defence. Credit where it is due, you could see the

:00:09.:00:13.

turn of speed he had, but credit where it is due, space in the

:00:14.:00:17.

Melrose defence but they managed to get a handle on. Nice sidestep then

:00:18.:00:23.

the afterburners go on. That is what happens when you have player behind

:00:24.:00:30.

the first line of defence. Even just enough to slow him down allowed the

:00:31.:00:33.

rest of the Melrose team to grab a hold of him and not allow him to

:00:34.:00:40.

play the ball backwards. It was McKean, number seven, he scored a

:00:41.:00:48.

hat-trick in the final at Galashiels sevens last weekend when Watsonians

:00:49.:00:53.

beat Jed in the final. Plenty of pace and Gyle. And Melrose, Madre

:00:54.:01:02.

McAndrew, number 14 on the back of his Jersey. Melrose will be quite

:01:03.:01:09.

delighted, there has been a bit of an issue getting the ball into the

:01:10.:01:13.

scrum because the clock keeps ticking.

:01:14.:01:21.

This is a great run by Fergusson and that might be an even greater

:01:22.:01:30.

tackle. Did Fergusson get it down? The referee has given the try.

:01:31.:01:44.

Conversion to come. 17-24. Well made from a mistake from Melrose. I gave

:01:45.:01:53.

them the kiss of death. And the conversion goes over from wide out

:01:54.:02:03.

on the touchline, 19-24. One try between the sides. This lad

:02:04.:02:07.

Fergusson is strong and fast and good enough to beat the last gasp

:02:08.:02:16.

tackle. Here come Watsonians again. Dangerous times for Melrose, what

:02:17.:02:18.

can the home side produce? here they come again. Fergusson out

:02:19.:02:47.

to McKean. This guy can run, Rory Steele. So can this man, Bertram.

:02:48.:02:57.

He's away. He's in for what could be the killer blow. 24-24 with the

:02:58.:03:06.

conversion to come. Bertram coming on as a replacement, big, powerful

:03:07.:03:15.

lad, strong runner. Good play by Watsonians, we thought they were out

:03:16.:03:19.

of the game. One little mistake by Melrose let them back in for one try

:03:20.:03:25.

and know they need this very important kick to put them in front.

:03:26.:03:33.

He has pulled it past the uprights. They are into extra time for the

:03:34.:03:36.

first time in any tie this afternoon. 24-24. Five minutes each

:03:37.:03:45.

way. Good interlinking, good playing, we thought he was going to

:03:46.:03:49.

go all the way. Important to make your tackles. Bertram, we thought he

:03:50.:03:54.

would put it down but understood he had to get as close to the posts as

:03:55.:04:00.

he could to make it easier but I'm fortunate late he didn't get it. --

:04:01.:04:05.

unfortunately. Here we are, and minutes rest and

:04:06.:04:20.

then these guys have to do it all again. It's all on a knife edge.

:04:21.:04:29.

These young ladies having a grand time this afternoon. Are they out of

:04:30.:04:39.

your corner of the woods? Sudden death is it? Any score? The game

:04:40.:04:55.

stops. On a knife edge. Bruce Colvin, perhaps kicking it too far.

:04:56.:05:02.

Easy position to Fergusson. Chalmers pops it out. McKean is like a little

:05:03.:05:13.

firefly. Safe hands by Watsonians. Think they might come up this side

:05:14.:05:18.

but they are not entirely sure. Ewan Miller bashing into the opposition

:05:19.:05:21.

and sapping their strength. Then the clever stuff. The ball went out.

:05:22.:05:41.

Knocked forward, penalty. Talking back to the referee saw a scrum

:05:42.:05:45.

becomes a penalty. Language is not tolerated in rugby map that's what

:05:46.:05:50.

happens. If you see a few harsh words to the referee in the wrong

:05:51.:05:56.

manner, penalty. Here come Melrose, remember, first try wins. Melrose

:05:57.:06:04.

slinging the ball around with abandon. Needs a bit longer stud in

:06:05.:06:13.

his boot. I think he's held onto that too long after the tackle. The

:06:14.:06:19.

referee thinks the same. Too long on the ground. Bertram trying to blast

:06:20.:06:27.

his way through. Off your feet, I think they were holding on, down off

:06:28.:06:36.

their feet. What the tie this is. Almost through. Chance for Ewan

:06:37.:06:46.

Miller. This could be the winner for Melrose. Not yet. He's got held up,

:06:47.:06:54.

it is held up. Oh my goodness. What defence by Watsonians. Unbelievable

:06:55.:07:03.

stuff. Very exciting stuff. If you have got a seat you are out of it.

:07:04.:07:07.

Almost there, might have made it himself. Perhaps he should have died

:07:08.:07:25.

to score -- dived. You are getting excited. He is through! That the one

:07:26.:07:35.

which puts Melrose through. They are into the semifinal. Much to the

:07:36.:07:39.

relief of the crowd and the rest of the players. Joy, excitement and

:07:40.:07:50.

relief. Good scrum, solid scrum. Not the best defence from Watsonians at

:07:51.:07:54.

the side of the scrum, well ban that man. Made a little mistake in the

:07:55.:08:05.

first half but made up for it there. Watsonians played well last week,

:08:06.:08:08.

played good rugby but Melrose are through to the next round.

:08:09.:08:21.

A very happy home support in Melrose after that result, sensational

:08:22.:08:29.

stuff. Melrose through against Watsonians. Everyone is happy, look

:08:30.:08:34.

at this, loving their day as are we here on BBC Two Scotland. Heriot's

:08:35.:08:42.

against Edinburgh Accies the final match of the quarterfinals.

:08:43.:08:55.

After this it could be two Borders teams because Edinburgh playing

:08:56.:09:05.

right to left against Heriots. Lazy kick. That was some game wasn't it?

:09:06.:09:12.

And believable, jack Fergusson will have been disappointed to miss that

:09:13.:09:15.

last-ditch conversion but great credit to Melrose. This will be

:09:16.:09:24.

interesting. Having worked at the Thais previously would have too

:09:25.:09:28.

fancy Edinburgh but anything can happen. -- having looked at the

:09:29.:09:36.

games previously you would have to fancy Edinburgh but anything can

:09:37.:09:37.

happen. They are going to try and get

:09:38.:09:48.

through this Edinburgh defence, the professionals on the right, the

:09:49.:09:49.

amateurs the left. Trying to get past Andrew Strauss,

:09:50.:10:03.

the Centre for Edinburgh but a little break by Tom Wilson, the

:10:04.:10:06.

captain. Switches inside. Edinburgh Accies be looking for

:10:07.:10:17.

possession, good little pass out to the left from Mulligan.

:10:18.:10:31.

Both teams sizing each other up. Yes, just a bit of physicality in

:10:32.:10:40.

the breakdown, Heriots having to commit players at the breakdown,

:10:41.:10:43.

Edinburgh comfortably defending with one player there. Applying the

:10:44.:10:50.

pressure and a mistake by Heriots leads to Edinburgh possession with

:10:51.:10:57.

Sam Beard. Strauss to the highly capable Turner, the hooker.

:10:58.:11:07.

Edinburgh are just looking to smooth, they have an extra gear.

:11:08.:11:25.

Yes, and the skill set as you'd expect from is excellent. Josh

:11:26.:11:30.

Turner going in at scrum-half, he's normally hooker, Damien Hoyland back

:11:31.:11:41.

inside. When you see it played like that it looks very simple but it

:11:42.:11:46.

needs all the skills to come together. But Edinburgh at the

:11:47.:11:49.

moment just have better skill set, more physicality and the

:11:50.:11:52.

professionalism is coming to the forefront. It will be a good team

:11:53.:11:57.

who give Edinburgh are real challenge. As you have said all

:11:58.:12:00.

afternoon and it's about stamina and speed. You can see the arm strength

:12:01.:12:05.

of these Edinburgh boys as well. Full-time professionals. Dummy from

:12:06.:12:10.

the big South African. Wilson, to Carmichael. Good scramble

:12:11.:12:33.

defence from Edinburgh. This is a good break. Tom Wilson, the captain.

:12:34.:12:44.

It will be a penalty. Long way to counterattack. Beard stepping

:12:45.:12:53.

inside. Turner goes ahead of him. Damien Hoyland. He is told the goal

:12:54.:12:59.

left but gives it right. -- he's told to go left. Forward pass by

:13:00.:13:06.

Edinburgh but a good break by Wilson down the touchline. Nathan. To what

:13:07.:13:25.

extent would Edinburgh, would be relaxed in a game like this thinking

:13:26.:13:30.

they should beat Heriots? They might be a little bit like that, Heriots

:13:31.:13:35.

will be well up for an opportunity to play against professionals.

:13:36.:13:39.

Edinburgh shouldn't be too lax that they will be thinking if we just

:13:40.:13:43.

play our game we will be better than they are. Just like this. Good take

:13:44.:13:49.

by third. Turner playing scrum-half. The ball right to left. Damien

:13:50.:14:02.

Hoyland. Good turnover by Heriots. That was a bit too lax. You can see

:14:03.:14:15.

the tempo can get into the game. Great defence by Heriot's, great

:14:16.:14:24.

turnover. Edinburgh making it difficult for Heriots. It will be a

:14:25.:14:25.

scrum. There has been some great rugby,

:14:26.:14:44.

Edinburgh is coming from 17-0 down to beat Ayr. Some excellent rugby.

:14:45.:14:56.

We are now into the business end of the game. Heriots pinned on their

:14:57.:15:06.

online. It's like Edinburgh have them in at struggle hold. They have

:15:07.:15:13.

to think how do they get away from this part of the pitch. That is well

:15:14.:15:23.

played by Strauss. Was it Strauss? Dean. Just shows you the

:15:24.:15:30.

physicality, Dean street in over the ball and cannot be moved. --

:15:31.:15:32.

Straiton. He's shown the way. Did he get the

:15:33.:15:58.

ball down? I am not sure he did. He was shown outside and he was always

:15:59.:16:05.

going to take it. No try. He was shown the way and he took it but

:16:06.:16:10.

what happened? He has got the ball in what you would class as the wrong

:16:11.:16:16.

hands and it was knocked down. For a professional rugby player, that is

:16:17.:16:20.

critical, not acceptable, to make a mistake like that. Just needed to

:16:21.:16:25.

transfer it into his left hand and he would have scored. Edinburgh

:16:26.:16:31.

living dangerously here at Greenyards, this is Melrose sevens,

:16:32.:16:36.

glad to have you with us. The Edinburgh team getting some words of

:16:37.:16:39.

encouragement from one of the great sevens players, Roddy Grant. He's a

:16:40.:16:46.

great guy, I had him as my captain of my squad, he was with me at the

:16:47.:16:52.

Commonwealth Games in 2014. Great person to have around. Really

:16:53.:16:55.

genuine and a real sadness that he's had to retire through injury. But

:16:56.:17:04.

he's turned his hand to coaching. He will be bringing his experience to

:17:05.:17:07.

the forefront to those players who are trying to quickly transition

:17:08.:17:13.

from fifteens into sevens. Cannot be many places in the world that are as

:17:14.:17:18.

beautiful as this. You have an event with a great sport like sevens in a

:17:19.:17:26.

natural amphitheatre surrounded by hills. And you know this is where

:17:27.:17:31.

the game was invented, it is special because this is where it all

:17:32.:17:35.

started. It's a wonderful event, when you travel the world as I was

:17:36.:17:39.

fortunate enough to do and you speak to other coaches and players they

:17:40.:17:43.

all talk about Melrose. They are all aware of the history of the game and

:17:44.:17:47.

it's a wonderful event. The cavalry is on bread-and-butter. -- is on for

:17:48.:17:54.

Edinburgh. Just extensive stride length. That's

:17:55.:18:11.

good defence, but if Edinburgh get beaten in this match it's the

:18:12.:18:14.

biggest upset because they look casual. Probably trying to do a

:18:15.:18:19.

little too much themselves rather than operating as a team. Credit to

:18:20.:18:24.

Heriots they are making the one-on-one tackles and making life

:18:25.:18:33.

difficult for them. Runs right into Strauss and is dumped back words.

:18:34.:18:45.

Turnover. Good play. Inside two Fowles, eight minutes gone he

:18:46.:18:49.

doubled the lead. Edinburgh gone through a quiet patch but when they

:18:50.:18:54.

have enough notice to turn the ball over they are going to be hard to

:18:55.:18:55.

beat. I think those posts to the right,

:18:56.:19:19.

might be an optical illusion because people keep missing. Dean inside to

:19:20.:19:26.

Fowles. You keep talking about the inside pass being hard to defend.

:19:27.:19:31.

It's where defence ten to get lazy. It's easy to say that if you

:19:32.:19:34.

disconnect because you've done hard work around the breakdown and you

:19:35.:19:37.

don't keep working the space be there. Nine minutes gone, penalty to

:19:38.:19:45.

Heriots. They have not had much attacking time, Heriots.

:19:46.:19:52.

Good tackle by Damien Hoyland. Carmichael. Damien Hoyland have

:19:53.:20:02.

handed off by Johnny Ray but he's back there battling. The ball is out

:20:03.:20:06.

says the referee, Edinburgh have lined up to the left. Strauss

:20:07.:20:16.

inside. I think Fowles has played well today, he has been everywhere.

:20:17.:20:21.

Played well last week in Gala as well. He has played sevens

:20:22.:20:29.

previously. He's got a good game understanding and enough pace to

:20:30.:20:35.

have an impact. Turnover ball in the white channel, Damien Hoyland making

:20:36.:20:40.

a great tackle, back to his feet, Dean wins the ball, a couple of

:20:41.:20:44.

passes and suddenly they are scoring under the posts. Edinburgh are just

:20:45.:20:50.

comfortable, too much power. Everyone of them can do that, the

:20:51.:20:57.

in. It's the same as we saw last year with Glasgow Warriors. The

:20:58.:21:00.

physical elements of the game, being able to win the battles. That's an

:21:01.:21:06.

incredible kicking style, he just punches it through and he gets

:21:07.:21:11.

height. It in the perfect location where you know it will be hard work.

:21:12.:21:21.

Not all sides as the referee. -- not offside says the referee. I think

:21:22.:21:28.

that was a surprise for the player as well. You talk about the restart

:21:29.:21:33.

with Nathan. We will see it here, great ball drop, head down over the

:21:34.:21:41.

ball, gets his right foot straight back down and it shows you the angle

:21:42.:21:45.

he has got, getting his foot fully under the ball, concentrate on

:21:46.:21:49.

getting the height rather than the length which is great. Edinburgh

:21:50.:21:55.

comfortably going through their routines, 17-0 ahead. Heriots will

:21:56.:22:02.

be on the ball, they look like if they could mount a couple of attacks

:22:03.:22:07.

they might give Edinburgh fright. The Edinburgh manager will be

:22:08.:22:10.

disappointed with them losing that line-out. Wilson on the ball for

:22:11.:22:13.

Heriots, he's been very influential for them, Johnny Ray. Pressure from

:22:14.:22:22.

Edinburgh. Making the mistake. A lot of intent from Heriots in terms of

:22:23.:22:25.

what they are trying to do but they are looking up and Edinburgh are not

:22:26.:22:37.

giving them the opportunities. Scrum for Edinburgh. Fowles to put the

:22:38.:22:41.

ball in and they will be happy to run down the clock. We have had a

:22:42.:22:45.

few years were the weather has been terrible but today we been very

:22:46.:22:50.

lucky. Damien Hoyland. He can probably skin most of these players

:22:51.:22:56.

if he wants to. He's away again. Three or four hand office. Up to the

:22:57.:23:01.

five metre line, Dean providing forward impetus. Damien Hoyland

:23:02.:23:06.

around the corner and finishing off the movie started. Plenty of speed.

:23:07.:23:14.

Damien has been playing a lot of seasons on the World Series,

:23:15.:23:21.

prolific scorer and he's come back, positioned well into the fifteens

:23:22.:23:26.

and using his power and pace. Has the ball in the right hand this

:23:27.:23:34.

time, Dean takes it on, Damien has enough understanding to speak around

:23:35.:23:41.

the blindside. And here's this kicking style. Wind left-to-right as

:23:42.:23:49.

we look. That is different. It's that punching kick to get the

:23:50.:23:54.

height. You can see when he takes the restart how much he gets his

:23:55.:24:03.

foot underneath the ball. Trying harder to get some length, here we

:24:04.:24:08.

go with the restart. Beautiful height, great restart. We can

:24:09.:24:11.

promise people some great games to come. Two semifinals and the final

:24:12.:24:18.

coming up. Edinburgh may be looking to put icing on the cake. Dean. Good

:24:19.:24:28.

tackle. Picked up by Smith. Heriots trying to attack from long range.

:24:29.:24:36.

Johnny Ray. Could be man and ball. You don't want to expose your ribs

:24:37.:24:40.

with that kind of pass but he's done well.

:24:41.:24:49.

And that brings that to the end, good game, we have some cracking

:24:50.:25:01.

matches to come. Things will heat up, we have three excellent games

:25:02.:25:07.

still to come at the wonderful Melrose sevens.

:25:08.:25:16.

Fantastic stuff, brilliant, Edinburgh looking really good. Some

:25:17.:25:51.

of the stories from the quarterfinals, Jed-Forest knocking

:25:52.:25:56.

out, the little village knocking out the country, fantastic. Real drama

:25:57.:25:59.

for Melrose getting through. But let's talk about Jed, out of five

:26:00.:26:09.

men at one point against Belgium. You mentioned that it's great to see

:26:10.:26:12.

the town of Jedburgh coming through against the country. This man came

:26:13.:26:19.

on, I asked where he was in the first half, he wasn't on which is

:26:20.:26:26.

why we didn't see him but when he came on what presents he had. What a

:26:27.:26:31.

turn of speed. Being critical he has the ball in the wrong hand but he

:26:32.:26:35.

had the confidence and pace to go outside. Came on at the right time

:26:36.:26:40.

and scored two important tries. But talking about the yellow cards, I

:26:41.:26:45.

don't think we've ever seen two from the same team. Belgium must be

:26:46.:26:48.

kicking themselves because they should have made more of that than

:26:49.:26:52.

the dead. Melrose, the hosts are through as well. Watsonians had it

:26:53.:26:58.

in their hands to go through into the semifinal and just didn't take

:26:59.:27:02.

it. This is a great try just before the end of the match, talk us

:27:03.:27:09.

through it. This was the last 30 seconds of the game, very important

:27:10.:27:15.

for what Sony ends, -- for Watsonians. The player got as close

:27:16.:27:21.

to the posts as he could in scoring the try and they are, the sweeper,

:27:22.:27:31.

this was extra time, sudden death. Great nailbiter but Melrose through

:27:32.:27:38.

which is great for the home crowd. It is Accies against Jedforest, the

:27:39.:27:41.

first of the semifinals. There should be a cracker. COMMENTATOR:

:27:42.:27:52.

Ready to get this first half underway. The first semifinal. Ian

:27:53.:28:02.

Chisholm gets it. Trying to get away on the outside. Deciding better of

:28:03.:28:14.

it. He's a bit of a sprinter. Lewis Young does the running, Harkness

:28:15.:28:19.

gives it to Gregor Young. In at the corner. The first try of this first

:28:20.:28:29.

semifinal. Jed go 5-0 up. This side of the draw is interesting because

:28:30.:28:36.

this is the two, Accies against Jed, I think if Jed can feed the likes of

:28:37.:28:41.

Harkness they can win this match. The breakdown has been good for Jed

:28:42.:28:46.

led it was from Selkirk early on, some good players. I think these

:28:47.:28:51.

games are important as the superstar games, the club games are what makes

:28:52.:28:53.

Melrose. Chisholm was just wide to the left

:28:54.:29:03.

with a conversion attempt, so five points to nil. Chris doing the

:29:04.:29:11.

running and setting up the try. The beauty was that he kept it alive, he

:29:12.:29:16.

didn't wait for the runner. He chipped it back and then Harkness

:29:17.:29:21.

was alive to it. It is that whole thing of keeping the ball alive.

:29:22.:29:25.

When you see that, the young boys with pace, they have got genuine

:29:26.:29:31.

pace. Lovely because the ball was thrown in crooked, so they will go

:29:32.:29:38.

for the scrum and Jed will have the put-in.

:29:39.:29:42.

Here it is, right on the Accies 22 metres line. Jed got through to this

:29:43.:29:53.

stage by beating Celtic in round two and then they had a ding-dong battle

:29:54.:29:57.

with the Belgians in the quarterfinals which they won. Accies

:29:58.:30:05.

Pete Gala in the quarterfinal. This is Ian Chisholm. Feeding it out to

:30:06.:30:12.

Lewis Young. Chisholm can go as well. Young again. It is good the

:30:13.:30:22.

way they keep width. Touchline to touchline. Robert Hogg. Usually a

:30:23.:30:30.

centre or a winger, but he played sevens. Penalty against Chisholm

:30:31.:30:36.

there, just handing the ball back in that situation. I think sometimes

:30:37.:30:39.

teams would rather give away the penalty than give away the try

:30:40.:30:43.

because you can always get the ball back. I like the way Jed play.

:30:44.:30:48.

Left-wing, right-wing, in the blink of an eye. It's great the way they

:30:49.:30:56.

transfer the ball. Gregor Young gets caught. The Accies in very quickly.

:30:57.:31:08.

Hanging on, Jed come away again. Long ball. Guillen can't take it.

:31:09.:31:13.

Harkness might be there, he is strong enough. Just held short of

:31:14.:31:26.

that, that is the five metre line. Accies are having to do all the

:31:27.:31:32.

defending. That is try number two for Jed. The important thing is what

:31:33.:31:38.

you don't see off the ball. The defence has to go wide and if

:31:39.:31:41.

someone wants to go straight, they have to run straight through. It

:31:42.:31:48.

could have been ape at, the gap opens up, in you go. And Lewis Young

:31:49.:31:56.

pops over the conversion. So, Jed are 12-0 ahead against Edinburgh

:31:57.:32:00.

Accies, who haven't really got into this game so far. Here we are with

:32:01.:32:04.

some four and a half minutes of the game played. Chisholm skips through

:32:05.:32:12.

and it's a lovely breakthrough. However, having scored the try, you

:32:13.:32:16.

have to then restart the game and you have got to win the ball back.

:32:17.:32:20.

Lewis Young tried to drop it on the ten. That's all right, that's in

:32:21.:32:29.

touch, and that is an Academical florin.

:32:30.:32:31.

The referee did not allow Jamie to take a quick throw in, there. A wee

:32:32.:32:44.

bit pedantic about that, what do you reckon? I just remember his father

:32:45.:32:46.

walking out in 1990, grand slam. McGlashan. Going along the line, the

:32:47.:32:57.

big winger, Paterson. Look at him go. This is more like it from the

:32:58.:33:07.

Accies. They have had a bit of the ball now. Chased by Gregor Young. A

:33:08.:33:14.

fight for possession, you see. They have to put the tackling and then go

:33:15.:33:19.

for the ball. These teams are both good at holding their width. Look

:33:20.:33:23.

how wide they are. That opens up the midfield for this kind of thing.

:33:24.:33:28.

This is clashing! He was almost through. Blenheim, tackled by Gregor

:33:29.:33:31.

Young. Max love again from scrum-half. This

:33:32.:33:42.

will be a try from the big glad. Oh! He got it, just. Five points from

:33:43.:33:49.

the Accies. I think one of the big differences this year is the

:33:50.:33:52.

breakdown technique of all these teams. Look at Jamie Sole taking out

:33:53.:34:02.

players in front of him. Every team today has been good at the

:34:03.:34:06.

breakdown. They have all been capable. Stevie Gemmill talks about

:34:07.:34:10.

keeping the width, and all these teams now are keeping men wide and

:34:11.:34:14.

moving the ball. Just looking at these players, they are all

:34:15.:34:20.

struggling. It has been a long, hard day for them. They are tired. This

:34:21.:34:33.

is Accies's fourth tie, but only Jed's third because they had a bye

:34:34.:34:41.

into Round 2. The sun is just dipping away a bit. A little breeze

:34:42.:34:48.

freshening up. Up goes Gregor Young. Love gets the ball out. Here goes

:34:49.:34:56.

Melvin Fat, Splash in again. He is the orchestrator, the guy who makes

:34:57.:35:00.

it all happen, keeps everyone in June. So strong. Harkness will have

:35:01.:35:09.

to get him. Chance here again, lovely running. Alex loved up the

:35:10.:35:13.

touchline, they chase between Chris Gillon and Alex loved and I think

:35:14.:35:18.

Guillen got the touch, so they will go back to the 22. That is half-time

:35:19.:35:22.

and it just shows you when the players go from end to end and there

:35:23.:35:26.

is a lot happening, time goes past very quickly. This is a good game

:35:27.:35:34.

too. Still close, 12-5. I think that Jed look as though they have got

:35:35.:35:38.

more in the tank, haven't they? They've got a bit more in terms of

:35:39.:35:42.

overall gameplay, but Edinburgh Accies, with the likes of Jamie

:35:43.:35:50.

Sole, they have got plenty of speed around. Every game today, there

:35:51.:35:55.

hasn't really been a game that has been a runaway victory, has there?

:35:56.:36:00.

Edinburgh might be the only team. But Jed beat Belgium. Some good

:36:01.:36:05.

games. Fraser Harkness, the number three. He doesn't have the pace he

:36:06.:36:08.

had when he was at his peak, because he is in his very early 30s now.

:36:09.:36:15.

But... I think the first time I saw him play was for fifteens. He could

:36:16.:36:22.

make people fall over just by looking at a different way. He could

:36:23.:36:29.

have the ball in his hands, look one way and they would just drop. Like

:36:30.:36:31.

camp -- like Campese. A very busy and

:36:32.:36:47.

engaged crowd here at the Greenyards fore this Melrose Sevens. I wonder

:36:48.:36:55.

if he is thinking, did I start all this off? Wow. Did Gala steal the

:36:56.:37:04.

posts? Here is the kick-off in this first semifinal and again

:37:05.:37:10.

Academicals have won the ball. He is a powerful lad. Harkness tries to

:37:11.:37:21.

get up but he won't catch Melvin Far, or will he? Guillen is the

:37:22.:37:27.

sweeper at the back. Lovely take. Almost an interception. Still the

:37:28.:37:35.

Academicals have it. Melvin Farr again. This is a chance for max

:37:36.:37:41.

love. He is in in the corner. Good try for Edinburgh Accies. Very good

:37:42.:37:46.

try. They just decided let's play the original couple of breaks. I

:37:47.:37:52.

think that is Peter Drennan's son, he used to play for Accies. This is

:37:53.:38:01.

a nice try. It goes left-to-right. Clever little outside break. The

:38:02.:38:06.

last pass just blocking the defender. Here is Alex clashing and

:38:07.:38:11.

he is wide out on the touchline. It see if he gets this. It's not bad,

:38:12.:38:18.

just going to crawl past the right-hand upright. No further

:38:19.:38:23.

points there from the Academicals. 10-12 is the scoreline. Can you

:38:24.:38:31.

imagine what it must be like to do all this running all day and then

:38:32.:38:35.

take on either Melrose or Edinburgh, that is the next semifinal. You have

:38:36.:38:44.

to be hugely fit. Here is Alex clashing, former Scotland sevens

:38:45.:38:45.

player of course. -- Alex Glashan. Back east just

:38:46.:39:11.

stood still -- Accies stood still and lead Jed do all the fancy stuff.

:39:12.:39:20.

Brilliant tackle by Paterson. He is a tough nut. Young goes in and gets

:39:21.:39:32.

it away. Hogg again. Hogg is in for the try. Robert Hogg gets the score.

:39:33.:39:39.

Jed get onto it harder than Edinburgh Accies. He went through

:39:40.:39:47.

between two defenders. Half tackle, got up and then kept going. At the

:39:48.:39:54.

moment it looks as though Jed are hitting the gain line harder and

:39:55.:39:59.

just hammering it. Lewis Young stroking over the conversion,

:40:00.:40:07.

another couple of points. 19-10. He was half tackle and then decided he

:40:08.:40:13.

was not half tackle. That is a bullet of a handoff.

:40:14.:40:19.

I think he has played his part in this game, he is subbed off. Lewis

:40:20.:40:27.

Young gets the game under way. Another of these kicks, which are

:40:28.:40:34.

kind of lazy but they are a sign of fatigue as well. The wind is going

:40:35.:40:41.

left-to-right. He just misjudged it enough to make it come right back on

:40:42.:40:46.

him. Accies will want to score from this. You want to score when you get

:40:47.:40:51.

possession of the ball. Chisholm puts in a vital tackle on Melvin

:40:52.:41:00.

Farr. In goes Lewis Young! Look at the pace of this laddie, right

:41:01.:41:06.

through the Academical midfield. He just left them for dead and he

:41:07.:41:12.

scores another try put Jed. 24-10. At the moment it looks as though Jed

:41:13.:41:18.

are set for the final. This is just... You don't want to criticise

:41:19.:41:25.

players but Melvin Farr went by himself, made a break by himself and

:41:26.:41:34.

then a good appeal from the Jed players... It is a good piece of

:41:35.:41:39.

play by Melvin Farr, but he got caught. For five players saying

:41:40.:41:43.

penalty, rest, penalty Camara. Tap and go. That is very good play. You

:41:44.:41:52.

hear the crowds roar as the sprinters go through. People love to

:41:53.:41:56.

see the pace of these players. Chisholm gets the job of getting the

:41:57.:42:03.

game under way. Gregor Law has come on the Jed. A number seven on his

:42:04.:42:10.

back or is it a one? I'm never sure with these modern numbers. Max love

:42:11.:42:19.

trying to come up this side. Melvin Farr, great weaving. Lovely run

:42:20.:42:32.

again by Jamie Sole. So powerful. Evidence is there, but Alex Glashan

:42:33.:42:37.

goes all the way for a lovely try for Accies. It is that width, isn't

:42:38.:42:46.

it? Alex Glashan saying get back, get back, get back. He's trying to

:42:47.:42:54.

get the game moving on. Great play. They've taken the ball to the right

:42:55.:43:03.

wing. Two big passes. He leaves the open space and Alex Glashan goes

:43:04.:43:07.

through. I think the game has changed over the years. I agree

:43:08.:43:13.

completely, there is more of that and less of what we used to call the

:43:14.:43:19.

jiggery-pokery. Everybody can ruck, everybody can tackle. There is Tom

:43:20.:43:28.

Drennan, and Jamie Sole on the far side of him. The scrummage is an

:43:29.:43:36.

-- and Accies put in. Guillen goes in and pesters the life out of Alex

:43:37.:43:47.

Glashan. Guillen again doing very well. Chisholm come out it goes to

:43:48.:43:52.

Lewis Young. There is the wee fellow, going through. He is away

:43:53.:43:58.

again. Rate piece of running. Oh! Fabulous stuff. Great running.

:43:59.:44:06.

Chisholm took the final pass from Craig Howard, but that was great.

:44:07.:44:15.

Again, that is all to do with keeping width. He came back in, the

:44:16.:44:21.

cut through the middle, and that is the end of the game. There we are,

:44:22.:44:26.

so it's Jedforest to go through into the first semifinal. Here is that

:44:27.:44:31.

last try again, Craig Cowing getting it through to Chisholm and he goes

:44:32.:44:38.

in behind the posts. Jed through to the final. We are here with the Jed

:44:39.:44:49.

coach, Ross Goodfellow. You said right from the start you were not

:44:50.:44:52.

here to make up the numbers and now you're in the final, you must be

:44:53.:44:57.

delighted. I'm delighted. We still not clicked yet but we've done what

:44:58.:44:58.

we need to do to reach the final. Your team have got one more per big

:44:59.:45:09.

performance in them? We've done what we needed to do but I think we can

:45:10.:45:14.

play well again in the final. My goodness, who will he play, Melrose

:45:15.:45:21.

or Edinburgh? Stevie Gemmill here in the studio. Delighted to have you

:45:22.:45:26.

with us. Melrose against Edinburgh, Edinburgh super strong but Melrose

:45:27.:45:29.

they showed amazing resilience in the game. Rate character to come

:45:30.:45:36.

back and win it in extra time and it will be interesting to see how much

:45:37.:45:39.

that has taken out of them for the next game. They will come out all

:45:40.:45:43.

guns blazing a big crowd, home advantage. In 2011 you were here and

:45:44.:45:49.

it was a great victory and the place went absolutely wild. Do you think

:45:50.:45:53.

they have it within them to beat the pro players of Edinburgh in this

:45:54.:45:57.

semifinal. And what I've seen, it will be difficult for them to do

:45:58.:46:00.

that. Don't take anything away, it's a home game for them at that will

:46:01.:46:05.

incentivise them 20% or 30%. The crowd will be behind them because

:46:06.:46:08.

they will be the underdogs in this game, without a shadow of a doubt.

:46:09.:46:13.

They are here for a reason, because they are winning their games, but it

:46:14.:46:19.

will be a pretty big game and a hard game for them. Melrose knocked out

:46:20.:46:25.

by Germany who got into the final against Glasgow Warriors. Today they

:46:26.:46:31.

play in the semifinal as well. Bill and John are still in the commentary

:46:32.:46:35.

box. COMMENTATOR: The second semifinal,

:46:36.:46:42.

this for a place in the final of the 127th playing of the Melrose sevens.

:46:43.:46:46.

They would meet Jedforest. Richard Milne, with ball in hand. Waiting

:46:47.:46:51.

for the queue to get this game going. Some very fast runners in the

:46:52.:47:04.

Melrose team. And off we go. They win the ball back. Baird. This is

:47:05.:47:10.

Highlanders. Highland is like an express train compare to some of

:47:11.:47:15.

these amateur players. Melrose didn't put anyone in the rucks

:47:16.:47:20.

either. Was that a knock-on on Strauss? Yes, it was. Gets a bit of

:47:21.:47:29.

a jeer from the crowd for that. If Melrose win this, it's a big upset.

:47:30.:47:35.

Let's not beat around the bush. Edinburgh should win this, the

:47:36.:47:38.

professionals. I think everyone will be cheering on Melrose to try to

:47:39.:47:40.

beat the city slickers. Here we go. Look at this, into the

:47:41.:47:56.

corner! What a score for Melrose. Have they got it down in time? That

:47:57.:48:01.

was a great piece of running. Has he done himself an injury? Concern on

:48:02.:48:10.

the face of Richard Milne, but that was great stuff. He took the

:48:11.:48:16.

Edinburgh sevens specialist on the outside. He goes to the outside.

:48:17.:48:25.

That is an incredible try. That is a statement of intent by Melrose. This

:48:26.:48:30.

could be an incredible conversion, if Richard Milne puts it over. But

:48:31.:48:36.

he is swinging across his body a bit rather than straight through. First

:48:37.:48:42.

try for Melrose, they lead five points to nil. It was a nice piece

:48:43.:48:52.

of running by Godsmark. Just to check as well. The inside man was

:48:53.:49:03.

vital. Chris Dean wins it. They can't afford to fall off a tackle

:49:04.:49:06.

because if they do, these professionals are so fast they will

:49:07.:49:12.

be through in the blink of an eye. Here is the man they've got to stop.

:49:13.:49:15.

He won't get past Godsmark. It is like the United Nations out

:49:16.:49:40.

there at times. Back it comes to Strauss. This is what they plan to

:49:41.:49:52.

do, just tire them out. That Melrose defensive line are not being tempted

:49:53.:49:57.

up by individuals. That was brilliant linkage by Chris Dean. A

:49:58.:50:06.

super try for Edinburgh, which levels it, once it touches down.

:50:07.:50:16.

Five points each. Good play by Edinburgh. Just been told to put it

:50:17.:50:21.

down. It is deemed bad sportsmanship if you take your time and waste your

:50:22.:50:22.

time. Full-time professional players don't

:50:23.:50:33.

lose too many rucks. All you folks at home can just about catch this

:50:34.:50:36.

ball as it comes to you through your television set. This is a good

:50:37.:50:42.

defensive line. He just made that break and attracted to macro-people.

:50:43.:50:51.

They had the width. It is the ability to keep the ball and move

:50:52.:50:55.

and attract to macro-people and keep it wide and send somebody in.

:50:56.:50:59.

He has been capped seven times for Tonga at international level, a very

:51:00.:51:05.

competent rugby player. Some great running in that previous

:51:06.:51:18.

tie. Here is Godsmark. Well shepherded there and well taken out

:51:19.:51:22.

by Strauss. Strauss doesn't miss many tackles and Rob Dickson, the

:51:23.:51:26.

referee, indicates penalty to Edinburgh. They are shouting holding

:51:27.:51:33.

sir, holding, sir. Attract the referee's attention that the Melrose

:51:34.:51:41.

man is holding the ball. Let's see what Nathan does with this one.

:51:42.:51:46.

Edinburgh have kind of kept the pace quite slow in this one. Risk being,

:51:47.:51:53.

Sam Beard. He thought he was going through. Men out wide. Strong as you

:51:54.:52:02.

like and a sidestep. In for his second. That is 12-5 now that

:52:03.:52:12.

Edinburgh lead. The sound of an aeroplane engine overhead

:52:13.:52:19.

well, he is just too strong. The aeroplane is advertising something.

:52:20.:52:30.

Just as you said Edinburgh taking it slow, they are, but they have got

:52:31.:52:32.

the power to go through you. This man... I think in Edinburgh he

:52:33.:52:41.

is the man that seems to unlock everybody. Breaks with one tackle,

:52:42.:52:45.

goes through the next. Lovely pass by Godsmark. Galbraith

:52:46.:53:13.

is the hooker and here is Milne, the playmaker. That was almost a

:53:14.:53:16.

hospital pass. That's better. Colvin. Almost made Chris Dean go.

:53:17.:53:26.

This is better running. Godsmark on that far side, shouting for the

:53:27.:53:34.

referee. Roddy Grant, the Edinburgh coach looking just a bit concerned.

:53:35.:53:43.

He shouldn't be, they are winning 14-5 and coming up to half-time,

:53:44.:53:48.

they have got the game in hand at this juncture. No one so far has

:53:49.:53:53.

looked like they can unlock Edinburgh. No one has shown the

:53:54.:53:59.

guile and pace. Look at the width they have got. They have got people

:54:00.:54:06.

on the left wing. Look at the holes in the white defence. There is Katoa

:54:07.:54:13.

brilliantly tackled by Richard Milne. Chance to break out of a

:54:14.:54:20.

rather difficult situation. That was George Taylor, the young Scotland

:54:21.:54:26.

under 20s player. Now, what can he do? He has really impressed me, this

:54:27.:54:32.

guy. That is a lovely pass by Colvin. Taylor goes, Colvin is our

:54:33.:54:41.

way! Chased here Strauss won't get him. Good score from Melrose, just

:54:42.:54:48.

under the posts, on the stroke of half-time. It couldn't have come at

:54:49.:54:53.

a better time. Katoa is still down this end of the pitch. He was on the

:54:54.:54:59.

attack, didn't get the try, really a lazy off-load so couldn't get into

:55:00.:55:02.

the defensive line and eventually Melrose were up against six

:55:03.:55:06.

defenders. Katoa is still running back as this conversion is being

:55:07.:55:13.

taken. Only two points between the sides as we reach half-time in this

:55:14.:55:16.

second semifinal, between Melrose and Edinburgh, with Edinburgh

:55:17.:55:24.

leading 14-12. I can't see how Melrose can unlock them but goodness

:55:25.:55:28.

me, they are getting closer and closer. That was a try they scored

:55:29.:55:33.

from their own try line. The one thing about Melrose, they don't give

:55:34.:55:36.

up. We've seen enough games that you know because they are playing this

:55:37.:55:40.

lot on their own territory, they might be half a bunch of

:55:41.:55:43.

professionals but they have got that pride. Just in the left of that shot

:55:44.:55:51.

you can see they are in that white jersey, that looks a long way to run

:55:52.:55:55.

from one end of that field to the other! If anyone has walked on an

:55:56.:56:00.

international pitch before a game, it feels short, 100 metres feels

:56:01.:56:05.

short. But ten minutes into a game, 100 metres can be 100 miles. If

:56:06.:56:09.

someone gives you the ball and says 80 metres to go, your heart sinks.

:56:10.:56:13.

That's why the fitness in the legs of the Edinburgh players really

:56:14.:56:20.

comes into its own. The Melrose coach was giving his chapter and

:56:21.:56:24.

verse there and saying leaving yourselves, play your game. He's

:56:25.:56:28.

doing great things with the under 20s. He's on his way up as a coach.

:56:29.:56:35.

I saw the under 20s play two games, the first against England, when they

:56:36.:56:39.

really wiped them out, they were magnificent. Some very good play.

:56:40.:56:45.

However, here we are, back at the second semifinal, with Edinburgh

:56:46.:56:48.

getting it under way and Melrose winning the first possession. They

:56:49.:56:55.

have got to be considered and calm and energetic as well. The referee

:56:56.:57:03.

indicates advantage for Melrose. Melrose are up for this, well done.

:57:04.:57:14.

Bruce Colvine. Almost through the gaps. Strauss just sussed him out.

:57:15.:57:22.

Richard Mills doesn't have the legs to get past Damien Hoyland, but

:57:23.:57:25.

someone else might on the other side. Look at the width, as you

:57:26.:57:34.

said. Galbraith, handing off paired. Strong laddie. Chance for Miller.

:57:35.:57:38.

Chris Dean is there, that was a great tackle for Edinburgh. Packer,

:57:39.:57:49.

running on empty. Yes, it's there! The change of pace took him through

:57:50.:57:55.

and he has put Edinburgh behind and Melrose ahead! It is Melrose 17-14

:57:56.:58:04.

in the lead. If they win this, if Melrose win this match, that is one

:58:05.:58:11.

of the big results. You can hear the referee talking to Edinburgh too,

:58:12.:58:14.

there have been a couple of high shots. Great play by Melrose.

:58:15.:58:20.

Richard Milne makes no mistake with this one. 19-14. Edinburgh need a

:58:21.:58:26.

converted try. The question is, what will the reaction be to this? That

:58:27.:58:31.

is a step and a half. Just came off his left foot. Stepped off his left

:58:32.:58:38.

foot, right through the gap. He's been as quick as any professional,

:58:39.:58:40.

hasn't he? Richard Mill, in the middle of the

:58:41.:58:47.

picture, getting the game under way. This man is such an experienced

:58:48.:59:08.

player. And away he goes, and the knock-on by George Turner. He gave

:59:09.:59:14.

the -- gets the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the Melrose crowd. A

:59:15.:59:20.

pitch rueful from George Turner, a bit full of relief from Godsmark.

:59:21.:59:26.

They know each other very well. This is a good break. Firing on all

:59:27.:59:31.

cylinders. You can hear the crowd just going, oh! Just had wreaked out

:59:32.:59:38.

to the front. That would be nervous for John Dalziel. His nails are away

:59:39.:59:48.

up to his wrist, gnawing away! Richard Mill, who put in the

:59:49.:59:57.

fabulous tackle, oh, referee! That maybe his membership of the Melrose

:59:58.:00:03.

club cancelled! No longer will he be welcome!

:00:04.:00:08.

I wonder if we can see Rob Dickson's face. The referee will be right!

:00:09.:00:21.

I think the referees have been very good today. They have been fair. No

:00:22.:00:24.

patronising or condescending. Sam Beard, this live from New

:00:25.:00:39.

Zealand is going to be Dragons next year. That'll be a great score. That

:00:40.:00:55.

level cert at 19-19. -- levels it. This big lad has made an impression

:00:56.:01:00.

since he came on, fresh legs, of course. A big kick, this.

:01:01.:01:10.

This is about 35 metres. Has he got it? All the way! 21-19, Edinburgh go

:01:11.:01:24.

in the lead. What a con version. -- conversion.

:01:25.:01:34.

The gap opened up to take the pass. That is the highest kick-off of the

:01:35.:01:40.

day. Richard Mill has played every minute

:01:41.:01:57.

of every tie and has been an absolute rugby. He might just go,

:01:58.:02:08.

there is the off-load. Almost over the shoulder of Pecquer. Godsmark on

:02:09.:02:19.

the far side. The referee says player on. That is what you get from

:02:20.:02:27.

the professional. There he goes, has the energy and the gas. That puts

:02:28.:02:34.

Edinburgh 26-19 ahead. Let's watch that again in a few seconds. I think

:02:35.:02:44.

a bit of verbal. But it was the kick through the ruck, it came back in.

:02:45.:02:50.

So often, if you sneak up that side, there is not the defender. I would

:02:51.:02:58.

have had a go as well. No, you would not!

:02:59.:03:10.

I can't get over Fowles' conversion, it was just textbook of a drop-kick.

:03:11.:03:21.

Headstone, lovely, rhythmical swing. John, you and I were on about

:03:22.:03:24.

jiggery-pokery earlier, but that break-up was exact the what we were

:03:25.:03:30.

speaking about. It is the old school sevens vision, spotted a gap down

:03:31.:03:35.

the narrow side. In years gone by, the Melrose crowd is used to thrill

:03:36.:03:38.

when the players were doing that. Fowles will have to go. Get up on

:03:39.:03:58.

your feet, the crowd shouting! Colvine is there, what a scrap for

:03:59.:04:02.

possession, they are fighting each other. Penalty. That is almost a

:04:03.:04:13.

yellow card. No, don't score there. Irvin Harris gets the try, 25-26. My

:04:14.:04:21.

goodness, we are in stoppage time, it all depends on this conversion.

:04:22.:04:27.

That is the issue. You want to get the converted try. They are all

:04:28.:04:31.

looking around, I will just score the try, and he leaves the kicker,

:04:32.:04:37.

Richard Mill, an incredible kick. If this goes over, this is a result.

:04:38.:04:43.

You will jump out of this commentary box if it does! It is good for the

:04:44.:04:51.

tournament if it goes over. Look at Richard Mill. Rob Dickson is

:04:52.:04:57.

watching carefully. Oh, it is wide on the right. And that is full-time.

:04:58.:05:03.

That is a great climax to a wonderful semifinal, Edinburgh have

:05:04.:05:10.

beaten Melrose by one point, 26-25. What they wanted to do was move the

:05:11.:05:14.

ball into the middle of the pitch, score the try, get the conversion,

:05:15.:05:18.

but they took the try and they will feel aggrieved, they came so close

:05:19.:05:24.

to beating the professionals. Melrose, in the likes of Pecquer

:05:25.:05:30.

they are as quick as some of the professionals. Unlucky. Jed-Forest

:05:31.:05:40.

learn from that? Stick at it and anybody is beatable. These

:05:41.:05:48.

professionals could be beaten by Fowles. STUDIO: The professionals

:05:49.:05:54.

are into the final, but by the skin of their teeth. Roddy Grant is in

:05:55.:05:57.

charge, into the final, but Melrose gave you a run for your money? They

:05:58.:06:04.

did, we always knew they would. They beat Edinburgh last week at a gala,

:06:05.:06:08.

good structures, they have a good history here. We knew we were in for

:06:09.:06:14.

it, but really pleased for the guys hanging in at the end. A feud

:06:15.:06:18.

gaskets were blown but the guys did well. A lot of emotion from the

:06:19.:06:23.

Edinburgh bench jeering the match, it means a lot to you? It means so

:06:24.:06:30.

much. The guys are competitive, they want to win. It is such a great

:06:31.:06:35.

empress to just tournament, it is a really good bunch of guys, the squad

:06:36.:06:41.

is really tight, no difference to us as a sevens side, the guys today, we

:06:42.:06:46.

really want to win. You are through to the final, congratulations.

:06:47.:06:51.

Roddy Grant very happy indeed. The Edinburgh side he has coached will

:06:52.:06:56.

play Jed-Forest in the final. We have the former Scotland sevens

:06:57.:07:01.

coach this afternoon. That semifinal was unbelievable, Melrose were so

:07:02.:07:05.

close to potentially knocking at the professionals? Absolutely, scoring

:07:06.:07:11.

straight after that. Unfortunately for Melrose, that was right in the

:07:12.:07:21.

corner and Richard Mill could not converted, but credit to Melrose.

:07:22.:07:26.

Some benefit to Jed looking forward. Jed have the extra ten minutes to

:07:27.:07:30.

rest, there is only 20 minutes between the end of that match and

:07:31.:07:33.

the final, will that make a difference? They are professional

:07:34.:07:38.

players in Edinburgh, but Jed will have that time to think? The ten

:07:39.:07:43.

minutes' breather will make a difference. When you get to the

:07:44.:07:48.

final, you play seven minutes each way and the qualifying but ten

:07:49.:07:52.

minutes each way in the final, that might put the advantage back on

:07:53.:07:55.

Edinburgh, you would expect them to be fitted because they are

:07:56.:07:59.

professional, but very sad for Melrose not to get there. As Steve

:08:00.:08:05.

said, you have to have 18 that is thinking more and is more

:08:06.:08:08.

experienced, Melrose will take heart from that, before hand, we didn't

:08:09.:08:13.

give them a chance, they played out of their skins, but they need that

:08:14.:08:18.

now is and they need to move on and score. Not to be, they are not in

:08:19.:08:26.

the final. The Aberdeen Asset Management final is coming up,

:08:27.:08:33.

Jed-Forest against Edinburgh. We are kicking off in about 17 minutes, or

:08:34.:08:37.

thereabouts! Let's talk about the fact that this is the first year

:08:38.:08:40.

that run sevens will be in the Olympics. How big a deal is that for

:08:41.:08:49.

the game? It started in Melrose in 1883, now it is a massive sports, a

:08:50.:08:54.

huge thing, the Hong Kong sevens are happening this weekend, now Olympic

:08:55.:08:59.

recognition? It is massive for the sport, for Rio and Tokyo. If you

:09:00.:09:06.

look at some of the names, Bryan Habana back for South Africa,

:09:07.:09:10.

Williams playing for New Zealand, it would be the pinnacle of a lot of

:09:11.:09:15.

players' careers and great for developing the game, globally. We

:09:16.:09:18.

have remembered about the Commonwealth Games and will talk

:09:19.:09:22.

about that in a moment, but the idea of this being an Olympic year, do

:09:23.:09:26.

you think potentially some Scottish players could make it into Team GB?

:09:27.:09:30.

Stevie probably knows more about that. But I just think it is a

:09:31.:09:38.

fantastic arena, the sevens. You talk about the Commonwealth Games,

:09:39.:09:43.

200,000 people went to watch that. The biggest crowd ever for any

:09:44.:09:50.

sevens tournament. Which is what it is all about. It is exciting to

:09:51.:09:55.

watch, but the players are there to take on the glory of Melrose or the

:09:56.:10:00.

Olympics. But for the players and the spectators, it is wonderful to

:10:01.:10:05.

watch, very exciting. Memories for you, Stevie, you were the coach of

:10:06.:10:09.

the Scotland team during the Commonwealth Games. This is at

:10:10.:10:13.

Ibrox, the noise in the stadium was fantastic? By far the best

:10:14.:10:18.

experience in atmosphere I have had as a coach. We chased New Zealand

:10:19.:10:26.

down at giving them a 17 point start, and then we had a critical

:10:27.:10:30.

game against Canada to get into the quarterfinal. Mark Bennett has been

:10:31.:10:35.

mentioned in terms of possibly being involved in the Olympics, he has

:10:36.:10:38.

done extremely well every time he has played. I think there is a real

:10:39.:10:44.

opportunity for Scottish players to be involved, you need to look at the

:10:45.:10:47.

competitiveness in the World Series, they lost to England and

:10:48.:10:51.

fortunately, today, in Hong Kong, but they have previously beaten and

:10:52.:10:58.

-- they lost to England, unfortunately. Do you think people

:10:59.:11:01.

like Stuart Hogg might be in with a shot? Sign a name has made it clear

:11:02.:11:06.

that he will select the best squad he can. -- Simon Amor has. It is not

:11:07.:11:16.

easy to transition from 15s into seven, Stuart Hogg came into the

:11:17.:11:20.

Commonwealth Games and did very well, he came off the back of a

:11:21.:11:25.

Scotland tour. Simon has identified a number of 15s players in each

:11:26.:11:29.

country, there is work going on to make sure that if he wants them, we

:11:30.:11:34.

can get them made available. One of the great memories of the

:11:35.:11:37.

Commonwealth Games was the final, New Zealand against South Africa.

:11:38.:11:40.

New Zealand had never lost in the final of the Commonwealth Games,

:11:41.:11:44.

South Africa managed to beat them, but what a game? It was exciting, so

:11:45.:11:52.

many people are watching, there are 12,000 people here today. It has

:11:53.:11:56.

been nonstop rug Eid, great action. Supporters want to see the ball in

:11:57.:12:00.

hand, the passing, this printing, the support play, the overhead pass.

:12:01.:12:06.

With that, the underdogs were probably South Africa that day, New

:12:07.:12:10.

Zealand were scooping a lot of prizes, it shows you what it is like

:12:11.:12:15.

to win, whoever wins the Melrose Sevens as well, we will probably see

:12:16.:12:20.

that. In terms of the Olympics, do you think New Zealand and South

:12:21.:12:23.

Africa could potentially be the teams who will be in it? Australia

:12:24.:12:29.

will be there, Team GB, potentially? You look at the World Series, New

:12:30.:12:36.

Zealand, Fiji, South Africa, Australia, they all have really good

:12:37.:12:40.

squads. It will be tough for Team GB because they have not played in the

:12:41.:12:44.

series together, but the preparation will start in earnest after the last

:12:45.:12:48.

two World Series tournaments, Team GB have three tournaments to

:12:49.:12:54.

prepare. We have seen it here, anybody is capable of beating

:12:55.:12:58.

anybody, there are only 12 teams in the Olympics, everybody has a

:12:59.:13:02.

chance. It will be very exciting, no doubt, let's hope some Scottish boys

:13:03.:13:07.

get into Team GB for the Rio Olympics.

:13:08.:13:09.

In the Greenyards, we are talking about the final coming up,

:13:10.:13:15.

Jed-Forest against Edinburgh. This is Jed's route to the final.

:13:16.:13:25.

The quarterfinal against Belgium, the town that knocked out the

:13:26.:13:30.

country! And a fantastic semifinal performance against Edinburgh

:13:31.:13:33.

Accies. I would imagine that it will be

:13:34.:13:36.

quite nervy in the dressing room, they know they are up against

:13:37.:13:40.

Edinburgh, a test team. Andy is there now. I am joined by

:13:41.:13:46.

the Jed coach, Ross Goodfellow, and captain, Gregor Young. You know you

:13:47.:13:50.

will be facing Edinburgh, a professional team, but you felt that

:13:51.:13:54.

if you are going to win this you'd probably have to overcome them? You

:13:55.:13:57.

had to play the best and beat the best, we will go out there, give it

:13:58.:14:02.

what we have. It was a tough game, they look like they are fatigued, we

:14:03.:14:07.

will just have to C. Gregor, how much would you enjoy testing

:14:08.:14:10.

yourself against these professionals? It is a chance that

:14:11.:14:15.

everybody has to take. You want to play rugby, be the best, paid

:14:16.:14:20.

professionals, we have to give it our all and hopefully the trophy.

:14:21.:14:24.

Melrose and Edinburgh very close, what did you learn from that, if

:14:25.:14:28.

anything, about how you can cope with them? They are both good side

:14:29.:14:33.

is capable of scoring from anywhere. But I feel like we are the same.

:14:34.:14:39.

People will be hurting. Both teams were really struggling because of

:14:40.:14:44.

tiredness. Hopefully we had enough in the tank to win. How are your

:14:45.:14:48.

legs, Gregor? One big performance left? These legs would usually start

:14:49.:14:54.

to be getting knackered now, but this is the Melrose Sevens final, so

:14:55.:14:58.

the boys get the extra boost. I am sure it'll be great, good luck.

:14:59.:15:02.

We had better get out of dressing room before the condensation closes

:15:03.:15:07.

the camera down! Lots of steam and excitement. They have been

:15:08.:15:13.

fantastic? Yes, they have some real sevens experience, Ross Goodfellow,

:15:14.:15:18.

the coach, Lewis and Gregor Young, both former Scotland international

:15:19.:15:22.

's. They have a team capable of beating Edinburgh if they all

:15:23.:15:26.

perform, the big challenge will be if they can cope with the

:15:27.:15:29.

physicality that Edinburgh will bring. And the fact they are a

:15:30.:15:34.

Borders side, and here in Melrose, winning here is all the sweeter?

:15:35.:15:39.

Very much. I did it a while ago, you forgot to mention examination mark

:15:40.:15:45.

1993, a long time ago, one of my biggest parts of rugby winning, very

:15:46.:15:49.

special, these boys know that. They have said in the footage has special

:15:50.:15:54.

it is to win at Melrose. They will have confidence of how well Melrose

:15:55.:15:57.

competed against Edinburgh and they will come into the final a little

:15:58.:16:01.

bit more confidently than they would have done. It will be a pretty

:16:02.:16:07.

ding-dong final. Let's look at some of the tries that Jed have scored on

:16:08.:16:11.

their way to the final. This is one in the second round. This is when

:16:12.:16:16.

they had a spring in their steps earlier in the afternoon, this

:16:17.:16:19.

fellow has been scoring lots of tries this afternoon. He is a big

:16:20.:16:26.

range runner, Lewis is the same. They will fancy their chances. They

:16:27.:16:30.

have both been professional sevens players previously, they know what

:16:31.:16:34.

it takes, they know they can compete. This man made a big

:16:35.:16:43.

difference when he came on, Doddie? It is nice to have him on the bench,

:16:44.:16:51.

too, when he did. Going right through the defence, making space.

:16:52.:16:54.

The other thing is that it is a team game. The support is vital in this

:16:55.:17:02.

game. Yes, the young boys might make space, but you have to have the

:17:03.:17:07.

balls backing up, Jed-Forest have done it extremely well so far.

:17:08.:17:11.

Nudges the support runners, but having the awareness and the

:17:12.:17:14.

wherewithal to make sure you know where they are, passing over the

:17:15.:17:17.

shoulder and stuff going on, lovely to see? People think it just

:17:18.:17:22.

happens, but they train together all the time. They have played a lot of

:17:23.:17:26.

sevens over the last number of seasons together as a team. As

:17:27.:17:31.

Doddie said, they are a very proud group of players. The big question

:17:32.:17:35.

will be whether it means more to Jed to win the Melrose Sevens than

:17:36.:17:39.

Edinburgh? The only people who know that will be in the stress in ruins.

:17:40.:17:44.

The fact that it is here, Jed have an opportunity, I think it will be

:17:45.:17:50.

interesting. It will be very interesting, Jed play Edinburgh,

:17:51.:17:53.

let's remind ourselves how they manage to get here this afternoon.

:17:54.:17:58.

They had a very comfortable win against GHA in the first round, then

:17:59.:18:02.

Harriet, who got through in their own match in the last minute, to get

:18:03.:18:06.

into the quarterfinals, they were knocked out by Edinburgh. I did not

:18:07.:18:12.

semifinal, just unlucky for Melrose, they pushed Edinburgh close but they

:18:13.:18:17.

are through to the final. Earlier, Roddy Grant was very happy. Andy has

:18:18.:18:21.

run across to their dressing room. Yes, I have. I was wondering, head

:18:22.:18:29.

of the final, Glasgow Warriors have won this for the last couple of

:18:30.:18:33.

years, does that give an added incentive to take the box for Adam

:18:34.:18:37.

Brook? Not really, to be honest. We all just really want to win this. --

:18:38.:18:43.

to take the box for Edinburgh. We are all really tight, it would be

:18:44.:18:49.

great for the boys, they have played so well so far, to win. How

:18:50.:18:55.

impressed had you been by Jed? They have done well, traditionally they

:18:56.:19:00.

have always been good, they have played sevens very well, which is a

:19:01.:19:04.

completely different game to 15s, they have played well in this

:19:05.:19:08.

tournament, but the young brothers have got good engines and they are

:19:09.:19:13.

all really good players. Damian, you have played in the sevens for

:19:14.:19:17.

Melrose, has special would it be to come away with the winner 's medal

:19:18.:19:28.

for Edinburgh? I am Chris. Arican he is hiding! I have been in a final

:19:29.:19:36.

before. It would be great to get the win. A tough day, short turnarounds,

:19:37.:19:43.

hopefully we will win it. Do you expect the professional fitness

:19:44.:19:46.

levels to work as an advantage later? It is probably perceived to

:19:47.:19:50.

be so, but it is a very different fitness. I know from doing sevens

:19:51.:19:56.

that it is tougher on the old lungs, but hopefully we will have more in

:19:57.:20:02.

the engine, we will go out and see. Roddy, you recently made the

:20:03.:20:05.

transition into coaching, it would be a nice win in your CV to pull

:20:06.:20:12.

away as a winner? It would be awesome, any player all coach, to

:20:13.:20:17.

get a Melrose winners' medal is some thing special. Many thanks to Roddy

:20:18.:20:23.

and Chris, I am sure they will give a good account of themselves in the

:20:24.:20:26.

final. STUDIO: Roddy Grant clearly very

:20:27.:20:31.

excited. Edinburgh have been very strong, the professional players,

:20:32.:20:35.

the extra elements of fitness on the fact that they are training every

:20:36.:20:43.

day? -- and the fact. They have had their own fitness, but they also

:20:44.:20:46.

have Highland and Chris Dean, they have a very, very good brand. Nathan

:20:47.:20:56.

Fowles has pulled the strings. I think it will come down to whether

:20:57.:20:59.

they can play as a team and bring their strengths in terms of

:21:00.:21:04.

physicality and getting the ball to Jamie and Highland. -- Damian

:21:05.:21:13.

Hoyland. Nathan Fowles has been very oppressive, he has been scoring

:21:14.:21:20.

tries as well. -- very impressive. He has been special. He has been a

:21:21.:21:26.

big part of Edinburgh, but how much diesel is left in his time? -- tank?

:21:27.:21:35.

Edinburgh are a good side, we saw that in the first game. There are

:21:36.:21:40.

areas of the game that may not be as sharp as they would like. Melrose

:21:41.:21:46.

came back into the amateur side. They competed well, it went on to

:21:47.:21:53.

the last kick. This is one that Jed-Forest will have to have a

:21:54.:21:57.

reward for, but they have a number of stray crooners. Great speed,

:21:58.:22:02.

great awareness. He was injured in the last game, Katoa, I don't know

:22:03.:22:07.

how bad it was, if he was involved it could be tricky. It is

:22:08.:22:12.

interesting when you see a couple of games prior, hopefully the coaches

:22:13.:22:18.

can analyse who are the strike runners, Fowles is one of those, if

:22:19.:22:24.

you can slow him down, they have a chance, but Edinburgh will do the

:22:25.:22:32.

same to the Young boys. Stevie, Jed are the underdogs, have they got it

:22:33.:22:39.

in them to beat Edinburgh? Undoubtedly, but whether they have

:22:40.:22:42.

the physicality to match what Edinburgh will bring to the table, I

:22:43.:22:46.

am not sure. The evidence will suggest not, based on what

:22:47.:22:51.

professional sites at and in previous years. It would be great to

:22:52.:22:56.

see Jed do it. If Jed can make it a game of sevens, which sounds simple,

:22:57.:23:02.

they give themselves a chance. If it becomes individual battles, the

:23:03.:23:04.

physicality and professionalism will come to the fore.

:23:05.:23:09.

Let's get to this final of the Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose

:23:10.:23:14.

Sevens 2016. It is Jed-Forest, the team who knocked out Belgium

:23:15.:23:20.

earlier, against Edinburgh. Glasgow Warriors won eight for the

:23:21.:23:27.

last two years, can be other professional Scottish team take it

:23:28.:23:33.

through? The ladies club is the trophy they will be playing for. The

:23:34.:23:39.

audience has enjoyed a festival of rugby. There was a slight

:23:40.:23:43.

disappointment when Melrose went out in the semifinal, but Edinburgh have

:23:44.:23:47.

been impressive. Edinburgh Accies were knocked out by Jed-Forest in

:23:48.:23:52.

the semifinal. Jed have been playing fantastic stuff. The way they have

:23:53.:23:57.

got together as a team, had strike runners going, they have done very

:23:58.:24:01.

well. As have Edinburgh, the professionals against Jed, Jed are

:24:02.:24:06.

desperate to win the trophy. The last time an amateur team won in

:24:07.:24:12.

Melrose was in 2011, won by the home side. Can Jed-Forest be the first

:24:13.:24:18.

amateur team to win for five years? Edinburgh really want this. As Roddy

:24:19.:24:21.

Grant said earlier, and we can get to the final now, Jed-Forest against

:24:22.:24:26.

Edinburgh with Bill and John in the commentary box.

:24:27.:24:30.

COMMENTATOR: The crowd are well dropped -- well wrapped up, the

:24:31.:24:35.

temperature has dropped a little. It is quite cool, the slightest Rizal,

:24:36.:24:41.

but not much. A spot of rain in the air. There is Melrose Abbey in the

:24:42.:24:44.

background, what a backdrop for the Greenyards, which is just laced with

:24:45.:24:50.

history about the seven aside game. When you think about 100 and jeers

:24:51.:24:55.

ago when it started as a fundraising event as to what it has become in

:24:56.:24:59.

Melrose and further afield in the expanse of the world, I'd essay that

:25:00.:25:04.

Ned Haig would be a very, very happy man. The Melrose committee would be

:25:05.:25:09.

happy with the size of the crowd. And if you think about rugby, the

:25:10.:25:16.

sevens as a tool for selling the game, America is getting franchises

:25:17.:25:20.

up and running, it is an Olympic sport, it is because of the sevens.

:25:21.:25:24.

It is an Olympic sport with Olympic funding. This game is the contrast

:25:25.:25:30.

between a sevens team in Jed who play sevens shape, up against a team

:25:31.:25:34.

of professionals who are stronger and probably quicker. I think the

:25:35.:25:38.

key guys are Katoa and Tofilau. This is your

:25:39.:25:58.

team, but I think almost everyone is supporting them against Edinburgh?

:25:59.:26:03.

But we are always neutral when we come to finals! Here are the

:26:04.:26:16.

line-ups. Some well-known names. Niall Paterson has the honour of

:26:17.:26:21.

refereeing this Melrose final. Nathan Fowles will get proceedings

:26:22.:26:25.

under way, ten minutes each way with a break of a couple of minutes at

:26:26.:26:32.

half-time. Edinburgh, the professionals, against Jed, the

:26:33.:26:36.

amateurs. Nathan Fowles with a kick that does not reach ten metres, but

:26:37.:26:40.

Jed play first, and the game goes on. I was going to say that was not

:26:41.:26:43.

professional, but Jed will not mind! A very strong tackle by Sam Beard,

:26:44.:26:50.

he knew what he was doing. There is the handoff, brilliant

:26:51.:27:07.

tackle. That was Katoa who put the tackle in common here is Harkin is

:27:08.:27:15.

doing country dancing. In touch. What a start! I just think Harkness,

:27:16.:27:23.

he has got an ability to beat a man. Look at the difference in stature

:27:24.:27:26.

between him and the professionals, but when it comes to rugby there

:27:27.:27:30.

will be nobody who can play better than him, in terms of individual

:27:31.:27:35.

skill he is as good as anybody. Years of sevens experience. Gregor

:27:36.:27:46.

Young jumped at the back, Strauss got it.

:27:47.:27:57.

They have men out wide. Four to one arm outside, engineered brilliantly.

:27:58.:28:13.

And there is Otulea Katoa, the seven times capped Tongan. Not a happy

:28:14.:28:21.

boy. This was dangerous, they suddenly launch the attack. Katoa

:28:22.:28:26.

was coming, he was thinking of coming, I am going to hedge right,

:28:27.:28:30.

but the pass went to him as if he was still running. Roddy Grant, the

:28:31.:28:34.

danger with the ten minutes each way in the final is that the stronger

:28:35.:28:39.

team naturally survives a bit more, so Jed had to get points on the

:28:40.:28:45.

board. Jed last won the final in 1974, last year they went out in the

:28:46.:28:50.

semifinal to the Warriors, who beat Germany in the final.

:28:51.:28:58.

Here they come with another wee one around -- runaround, as they call

:28:59.:29:09.

them. Hogg, trying to get outside them. No one on the right, come back

:29:10.:29:16.

to the left. The ball into Hanson. Hogg again. Edinburgh quite

:29:17.:29:21.

composed. It's a tight game of cat and mouse, John. Look at the

:29:22.:29:25.

Edinburgh defensive line, those red and white jerseys, it will take

:29:26.:29:28.

someone to go in between them like that. Chisholm, Gregor Young. Over

:29:29.:29:41.

the top. The wise old owl. He just stabs his feet a bit like a Cossack

:29:42.:29:45.

dance and then he passes the ball. Chris Gillon. Edinburgh quite keen

:29:46.:29:52.

just to let Jed have possession, they're not seeming to go anywhere.

:29:53.:29:57.

They're just coming up together, keeping that four or five metres in

:29:58.:30:02.

between. Oh! That is good. There is the pace. Gregor Young to Lewis

:30:03.:30:10.

Young, and Lewis Young opens Jed's account in this Melrose Sevens

:30:11.:30:17.

final. First blood to the team from the Borders. 5-0 and a lot of

:30:18.:30:21.

rejoicing in the terraces, I can tell you. They're not just running

:30:22.:30:25.

at professional players, they're trying to open them up. It was

:30:26.:30:30.

inside, everything was hand to hand to hand. Didn't go for contact. They

:30:31.:30:36.

went for the gap and the off-load. Lewis Young pops over the

:30:37.:30:42.

conversion. 7-0 Jed lead. A long way to go, of course. It has been a ten

:30:43.:30:48.

minutes each way final, so they have got over five minutes to play in

:30:49.:30:52.

this first half, and the crowd, which has stayed right to the end,

:30:53.:30:57.

between ten and 11,000 people here, engrossed in this. And who knows

:30:58.:31:03.

who's going to be the winner. Lewis Young with his kick right into the

:31:04.:31:13.

hands of Nathan Fowles. Andries Strauss, he has played over 100

:31:14.:31:18.

games in Super 15 rugby in South Africa. Very knowledgeable player.

:31:19.:31:23.

What a sidestep by Nathan Fowles. Showing a lot of class, there. Will

:31:24.:31:33.

Helu comes up on the right but what a fine tackle by Ian Chisholm. Dean,

:31:34.:31:45.

Sam Beard. Highland! Hoyland had it, but knocked on. A forward pass. Jed

:31:46.:31:51.

breathe a sigh of relief. Dangerous moments for Jed, because Chris

:31:52.:31:54.

Gillon is injured, so they only have six people playing. I just saw the

:31:55.:32:03.

physio, but we can't see the video. He wants to get him off the pitch

:32:04.:32:07.

although he doesn't seem to want to get off the pitch. What is good

:32:08.:32:12.

about Jed is that scrambled defence. Edinburgh were through them twice

:32:13.:32:15.

and they just applaud them back. Nathan Fowles was through. That was

:32:16.:32:24.

a loose pass. Sam Beard was through. One of the young boys, I think it

:32:25.:32:30.

was Gregor Law, was there, just in case Damien Hoyland tried something

:32:31.:32:34.

fantastic. Chris Gillon on the touchline receiving a bit of

:32:35.:32:35.

attention. But Fraser Harkness puts in. Back it

:32:36.:32:50.

goes to Ian Chisholm. This is Lewis. If you're wondering how I know which

:32:51.:32:58.

is which, I'm dammed if I remember! It's hard to separate them. I think

:32:59.:33:02.

it's to do with the numbers on their jersey! It's partly that. And there

:33:03.:33:08.

is another way. However... Here goes Craig Coward. To Hogg. The pass went

:33:09.:33:24.

behind. Away it goes, Helu. It is Helu and goodbye really, isn't it?

:33:25.:33:31.

There we go. That has opened the professionals's scoring tally, but

:33:32.:33:35.

he has injured his shoulder. Yes, just moves that lose pass. Just as

:33:36.:33:44.

long as it wasn't Helu Dolly. A good score but he has been tackled, right

:33:45.:33:48.

on his right shoulder. He has crushed his left shoulder, he's not

:33:49.:33:54.

happy. Edinburgh getting in behind the Jed defence. On the touchline,

:33:55.:34:03.

Helu is here, and I just wonder if Alan Solomons is thinking about his

:34:04.:34:08.

battle ravaged squad being thinned out even more. That is a conversion

:34:09.:34:13.

which is successful, so it's all square, as Nathan Fowles adds the

:34:14.:34:17.

two points and Helu gets a bit of treatment from the medics. It's

:34:18.:34:24.

easy, isn't it, because it's just a loose ball? Helu beats two or three

:34:25.:34:31.

people and that is that. His shoulder... He's just not happy. You

:34:32.:34:37.

can hear the crunch. That is a drop out by Nathan Fowles. Jed have won

:34:38.:34:42.

possession. Back to Harkness. Up comes that red and white line.

:34:43.:34:49.

Strauss and Harkness in a little tete-a-tete on the far side. Here he

:34:50.:34:59.

comes. Almost away. Lewis Young there to help. Gregor Young in at

:35:00.:35:05.

scrum-half. Penalty against Sam Beard.

:35:06.:35:11.

Was that forward? It almost looked like it. Ian Chisholm. See the

:35:12.:35:15.

wheeze Well, they're not counter rucking.

:35:16.:35:29.

Up against Sam Beard and he's not going anywhere fast against Sam

:35:30.:35:30.

Beard. This is Chris Dean now, and Hoyland.

:35:31.:35:35.

And the big lad. Deliberate knock-on. Strauss. It is

:35:36.:35:54.

locked at 7-7. Five-minute is to play in this final. I beg your

:35:55.:35:57.

pardon, they have got just under a minute to play in the first half. I

:35:58.:36:05.

was thinking of a 14 minute tie. Katoa come away at the touchline.

:36:06.:36:12.

That was a great tackle by big Robert Hogg who just has another

:36:13.:36:17.

look at his victim, so to speak, and just walks away. Got him by the

:36:18.:36:27.

ankles, just hauled down the big Samoan. Someone has lost a boot away

:36:28.:36:39.

at the far end. There was a wee pause in proceedings because just at

:36:40.:36:42.

the other end as we see it, I think it's George Turner. He has been

:36:43.:36:49.

pretty influential, Turner. He's a physical hooker. Edinburgh starting

:36:50.:36:55.

to win the collisions, aren't they? Helu is making ground, Katoa is

:36:56.:37:00.

making ground. You look at the Youngs and there are a couple who

:37:01.:37:06.

can unlock them. At the moment it seems to be swinging towards

:37:07.:37:11.

Edinburgh towards half-time. Sam Beard, along to been. Hoyland, the

:37:12.:37:19.

danger man. Chased by Lewis Young. Who has got the pace? Sam Beard has

:37:20.:37:24.

got the strength. Young has got the pace and Sam Beard gets the ball.

:37:25.:37:29.

That is a penalty to Jed. They needed it because the pendulum had

:37:30.:37:34.

kind of swung back in Edinburgh's favour. Here is Craig Coward. Gregor

:37:35.:37:36.

Young. Harkness at the back. Here is Sam Beard, just general link

:37:37.:37:47.

everything. Chris Dean with a wee bouncer for

:37:48.:37:59.

Strauss, who picked it up well. Katoa. Look at him go, this big

:38:00.:38:05.

Tongan. Lovely running and then an injection of pace. Look at the

:38:06.:38:10.

gritted teeth going over the try line. Edinburgh go-ahead for the

:38:11.:38:14.

first time in this game, Jed 7-12 Edinburgh. I was just thinking that

:38:15.:38:20.

so much whether you get a pro contract is down to luck. Look the

:38:21.:38:26.

two Young boys, you can't say they're not as good as some of the

:38:27.:38:31.

others, until you watch this man. All that pace, all that strength.

:38:32.:38:38.

Not many local players can do that. But he will be won in 1000. Nathan

:38:39.:38:43.

Fowles. Long-range conversion attempt. It has gone wide. That's

:38:44.:38:51.

half-time in this thriller here. A 5-point lead for Edinburgh and there

:38:52.:38:56.

is the man who scored the last try, Otulea Katoa. Edinburgh lead 12-7 at

:38:57.:39:06.

the turn. I think if Jed can keep the ball in wide spaces and use the

:39:07.:39:10.

likes of the Young brothers. I don't know which one it was but one of

:39:11.:39:14.

them hauled back Sam Beard. There are not going to be many people in

:39:15.:39:18.

the Edinburgh team Miles quicker than them, but Edinburgh going to

:39:19.:39:21.

win the physical battle. The try that came in the first half for Jed

:39:22.:39:25.

was because they kept it out of context and kept the ball alive.

:39:26.:39:31.

Edinburgh don't have that raw abrasion as the game goes on, so

:39:32.:39:35.

they are going to have to be smart. If they win this game, it will be a

:39:36.:39:40.

big upset. I just like the way they played. Very organised, very good

:39:41.:39:45.

young players. The Young brothers, I don't know why they're not

:39:46.:39:53.

professionals. Well, there is Chris Gillen, having another wee word with

:39:54.:39:59.

the physio. He wants back on. If it's a blood injury, he will get

:40:00.:40:04.

back on. Here we are, ten minutes to go. What is he, his manager? I don't

:40:05.:40:15.

know, he's one of the coaches. But a man who gives such wise coaching

:40:16.:40:19.

help to the team. There is good fellow, who is the sevens coach, on

:40:20.:40:23.

the touchline. This has together ten. Ten minutes to go. Edinburgh

:40:24.:40:37.

leading. How you tell -- I worked out how you tell the Young brothers

:40:38.:40:42.

apart. Different colour boots! Correct. That's the only way I can

:40:43.:40:49.

sort them out. Here is Turner. Strauss out to Hoyland on the far

:40:50.:40:56.

side, Lewis after him. They must feel that the Young boys have got

:40:57.:41:02.

the pace. This is a chance for Jed, they have to take it. What a tackle,

:41:03.:41:06.

what a thumping tackle by George Turner. That was a great tackle. He

:41:07.:41:18.

smashed them. And then watch this, he just gets straight back up and

:41:19.:41:24.

straight on board. Did he let go of him? I don't think he did, but he

:41:25.:41:30.

hammered into them. It was a winner of a tackle, a winning tackle. Here

:41:31.:41:36.

I am again, he says. Just a little bit of edge in that. Strauss wide,

:41:37.:41:43.

he has got Nathan Fowles and he has got Katoa as well. Nathan Fowles

:41:44.:41:47.

wants to go! Look at the Excel oration. The ball coming back

:41:48.:41:53.

beautifully for Edinburgh, three men out wide. There they are, one, two,

:41:54.:41:59.

three, Hoyland and then Sam Beard. Try for Edinburgh. Beautifully

:42:00.:42:05.

worked. Beautifully worked. Simple, simple, simple. Take the ball as far

:42:06.:42:12.

as you can using Katoa up the left wing. Nathan Fowles is at the heart

:42:13.:42:17.

of everything. It is his long spin pass. This is Hoyland, he just

:42:18.:42:21.

brings a man onto them. That is a run in. It's clever, isn't it? Find

:42:22.:42:27.

somebody out wide... Oh dear. Well, we are just waiting for Nathan

:42:28.:42:40.

Fowles to take the conversion, while a gentleman is escorted from the

:42:41.:42:43.

field. Nathan Fowles. It has gone wide. So,

:42:44.:43:02.

Jed 7-17 Edinburgh. Some people look on horrified, some people look on

:43:03.:43:09.

mildly amused, but I think most people look on disappointed.

:43:10.:43:16.

There is Sam Beard, who scored that last try, just trying to stay away

:43:17.:43:25.

from all of that. You can see the yellow jackets away in the distance,

:43:26.:43:28.

with this gentleman being escorted away.

:43:29.:43:34.

He will get his name in the papers, but for all the wrong reasons.

:43:35.:43:46.

Right. You want to add the score. You want to add the score quickly,

:43:47.:43:57.

get back in this game. They need to do it pretty soon. That is great

:43:58.:44:03.

from Nathan Fowles. It bounced away from Harkness. With his bulk, he

:44:04.:44:07.

managed to put Sam Beard on his backside. Goodness me. That was just

:44:08.:44:14.

about a hospital pass, there. Knocked on by Edinburgh. You can see

:44:15.:44:19.

Jed under pressure and Chris been almost got in for that, for an extra

:44:20.:44:25.

try. That really would have sealed it. It is still open at the moment.

:44:26.:44:31.

There is still a chance. Harkness at scrum-half, as Edinburgh apply a bit

:44:32.:44:39.

of oomph in that scrum. He has two boot it long downfield and now there

:44:40.:44:44.

is a foot race on. Lewis Young down there by Chris Dean. That is a

:44:45.:44:49.

penalty. He's got to stay on his feet. He's got to be careful. You

:44:50.:44:55.

shouldn't argue with the rest, either. He wasn't on his feet. You

:44:56.:45:05.

can't just go in and tackle him. A wee break in proceedings here as

:45:06.:45:09.

somebody gets a bit of treatment. There is Neil Patterson, quite happy

:45:10.:45:21.

with that decision. Sasa Tofilau It is coming on for the Edinburgh side.

:45:22.:45:27.

He is another of these big South Sea Islanders. He is Samoan. Over in

:45:28.:45:42.

Scotland at the moment. You can hear him saying 13 minutes. It will

:45:43.:45:49.

finish in the 20th minute, so quite a long way to go. A real contrast in

:45:50.:45:54.

styles all the way through this tournament. You look at the way

:45:55.:45:57.

Edinburgh play and they are happy to use their arm strength and muscle.

:45:58.:46:09.

Harkness is the free man but he is caught by three men. This is Andries

:46:10.:46:18.

Strauss, up the narrow side. Hoyland trying to break away, and an

:46:19.:46:22.

off-load to Nathan Fowles. Nathan Fowles has been one of the strong

:46:23.:46:26.

runners for Edinburgh in this competition and he's done it again.

:46:27.:46:32.

Seven points to 22 now and Edinburgh beginning to open up a sizeable gap.

:46:33.:46:37.

They are beginning to make the little breaks, aren't they? You are

:46:38.:46:45.

drawing in a couple of men, Hoyland with that last-minute off-load.

:46:46.:46:51.

Edinburgh, you know what? They've played the game quite slowly. But

:46:52.:46:55.

when they sniff a gap, they are right through you. Hoyland has

:46:56.:47:02.

played quite well but I think Nathan Fowles. Jed got to the final in 2012

:47:03.:47:08.

and they went out to the Saracens professional team by 50 points. Here

:47:09.:47:15.

is Fowles with the conversion. It seems to be Jeff Maggert last

:47:16.:47:19.

misfortune to meet a professional side in the final. That is what they

:47:20.:47:24.

are all playing for, the beautiful Melrose Trophy. Look at it. And of

:47:25.:47:30.

course the medals are what the players all want to get their hands

:47:31.:47:34.

on, because that is the most prized possession in Scottish rugby sevens.

:47:35.:47:38.

Jed desperately need to get a try now. The we spark that was there

:47:39.:47:44.

from them has gone and they need to get it quickly. To be perfectly

:47:45.:47:48.

honest, it's difficult as an amateur player and you mentioned the word

:47:49.:47:51.

professional, you go to work probably ate until six everyday and

:47:52.:47:56.

training probably an extra night, to play against somebody who turns up

:47:57.:48:01.

every day at Murrayfield as they do, lifting weights and practising being

:48:02.:48:04.

professional rugby players. The fact that they can score some tries is

:48:05.:48:09.

great. He puts a wee kick infield and it bounces right into the hands

:48:10.:48:15.

of Strauss. Fowles has all the time in the world. There is Sasa Tofilau,

:48:16.:48:26.

with Hoyland lurking. Chance here LEXI needs to get in behind the

:48:27.:48:31.

posts. He has got there, he has got the try. 12-24, Roscoe with that

:48:32.:48:38.

burst of pace up by the grandstand, and five more points for Jed. He has

:48:39.:48:46.

got pace, Combe he's definitely a flyer. Two more tries by Jed,

:48:47.:48:53.

unlikely, but if they do then you have a completely different ball

:48:54.:49:03.

game. He almost got him, but not quite. So, Jed line up and there is

:49:04.:49:10.

a quick restart, there it is. Just evaded Harkness. Would you believe

:49:11.:49:19.

it? Jed 12-24 Edinburgh. There is the scoreline. Three and a half

:49:20.:49:26.

minutes to go. A bit of a miracle, I think, if Jed could score two tries

:49:27.:49:31.

and concede none, but you never know. Gregor Law is the man at the

:49:32.:49:41.

front of that big Jed line-out. It goes right over them all. Callum,

:49:42.:49:45.

Chisholm, Lewis Young. There is a gap. Trying to bash his way through.

:49:46.:49:53.

There we go. Come on, Roscoe, do it again, he says. Hoyland puts the

:49:54.:49:59.

tackle in. Chisholm goes, he is away! He could do it. As he got the

:50:00.:50:06.

legs? He is there a! He's got the try. 17-24. Is this the beginning of

:50:07.:50:13.

a miraculous recovery? I tell you what it is, it's brave. Look how

:50:14.:50:17.

exhausted these players are. They've been playing all afternoon, they had

:50:18.:50:22.

to wait two hours between games at one point, and Ian Chisholm, you

:50:23.:50:26.

think about how they have built this game... Lewis Young is about to slot

:50:27.:50:31.

this if he can. They need the two points. Long and straight between

:50:32.:50:43.

the sticks! It is a one scored game now, only five points between the

:50:44.:50:47.

sides, and a couple of minutes left. Plenty of time. Plenty of time for

:50:48.:50:52.

Edinburgh as well, John, is there not? Well... There is that fatal

:50:53.:50:58.

error of the kick-off not going ten and Edinburgh handed possession. You

:50:59.:51:04.

would never have said five point gain, would you? With a minute and a

:51:05.:51:11.

half left. Chris Bean with the ball. He's wasting time. Get on with it,

:51:12.:51:20.

just get on with it, son. -- Chris Dean. There we go. That was Tom

:51:21.:51:29.

Galbraith. Chris Dean is caught there, almost. Galbraith, a very

:51:30.:51:33.

strong lad. George Turner. Chance here. What a tackle by Fraser

:51:34.:51:39.

Harkness! Brilliant, brilliant stuff! Galbraith! This is

:51:40.:51:54.

excitement. Sasa Tofilau... The ball goes wild. And wide. Very exciting

:51:55.:52:01.

up here in the commentary box as well. Good running there, that was

:52:02.:52:09.

Andries Strauss. Sasa Tofilau. Can anybody stop this giant? He just

:52:10.:52:13.

bashes his way to the line. He's got it. He's got it. 19 - 29. Sasa

:52:14.:52:23.

Tofilau goes in for the try that may save Edinburgh. I think you're

:52:24.:52:31.

right, I think that's the try that makes it. What's that, 15 seconds

:52:32.:52:38.

left? Sasa Tofilau, you said he is the big, strong lad. Young thinks

:52:39.:52:43.

he's got him. Young isn't happy at the end of this. Sasa Tofilau

:52:44.:52:48.

through the middle, through the middle. Yet, I would call that a

:52:49.:52:57.

try. -- yes, I would. In the end it is a win for Edinburgh over Jed.

:52:58.:53:06.

Federer the winners, 29-19. STUDIO

:53:07.:53:10.

Be professional team proved too strong in the end and glorious

:53:11.:53:19.

scenes here in Melrose. They were good, weren't they? All credit to

:53:20.:53:27.

Jed-Forest, they got themselves back in the game. Gave the ball back to

:53:28.:53:35.

Edinburgh with a minute ago and they showed their class to finish with a

:53:36.:53:43.

try. Let's hear what Andy Burke as to say, he is on the pitch right

:53:44.:53:45.

now. We will try and get hold of him as

:53:46.:53:56.

soon as possible here. Obviously mayhem down on the pitch at the

:53:57.:54:01.

moment, lots of noise going around. As you can see, all the fans are

:54:02.:54:05.

delighted with the way it has gone. You have to feel a bit sorry for

:54:06.:54:15.

Jed-Forest. You do. There is Chris, the captain. Edinburgh came and did

:54:16.:54:20.

a good job. Jed-Forest went right to the end and little touches within

:54:21.:54:24.

the game could have gone either way, but credit to Edinburgh, they looked

:54:25.:54:29.

the dominant side from the start. They played some pretty good stuff

:54:30.:54:35.

as well, didn't they, Edinburgh? They did. They played a mixture of

:54:36.:54:40.

good sevens and what you class as more typical fifteens rugby. They

:54:41.:54:46.

are a good blend of local players and the Southee Islander boys coming

:54:47.:54:50.

to the fore. It's not easy coming here as favourites. Everyone

:54:51.:54:55.

expected them to win but they have dealt with that pressure, to be fair

:54:56.:55:03.

to them, and won it well. Their players were so exciting and

:55:04.:55:08.

dynamic. Other guys back it up. We talked about it all through the

:55:09.:55:12.

afternoon, the support runners were very important. Fowles got past the

:55:13.:55:18.

first tackle and the rest of his team worked off him and did very

:55:19.:55:22.

well. The whole team did remarkably well but the gap wasn't that much

:55:23.:55:26.

and Jed-Forest can take a lot of heart because they are professionals

:55:27.:55:30.

and they train pretty much every day, so they should be a lot better.

:55:31.:55:36.

Jed-Forest gave them a very exciting final and Edinburgh just won it in

:55:37.:55:40.

the last couple of seconds. Do you think perhaps the fact that Glasgow

:55:41.:55:45.

have won this for the last two years, now Edinburgh are here,

:55:46.:55:50.

another Pro team winning it, is that the way it's going to go? If you

:55:51.:55:53.

continue to invite professional teams, you're going to give them a

:55:54.:55:58.

real opportunity. But the local sides have got closer on a couple of

:55:59.:56:02.

occasions and that has given them great heart and they will look

:56:03.:56:05.

forward to the rest of the season in sevens. Roddy, that was eight

:56:06.:56:11.

special final and a special victory for your team. It was. Special is

:56:12.:56:19.

the word. Sanguine comes to mind. Just so proud of the guys, such a

:56:20.:56:23.

good feeling and just so, so proud of them. The effort was visible to

:56:24.:56:29.

me. I'm sure the whole crowd felt it as well. They rang you really close.

:56:30.:56:37.

The good thing about sevens is that it is a completely different game to

:56:38.:56:40.

fifteens, different fitness, different athletes. They both played

:56:41.:56:47.

incredibly well. They are both unbelievable sevens teams. You came

:56:48.:56:53.

out on top, congratulations. STUDIO

:56:54.:56:56.

Roddy Grant, clearly a very happy man. No doubt about it, they played

:56:57.:57:02.

the best rugby and they are the champions Melrose 2016. From all of

us, thanks very much for your company. For now.
