It's the start of Ireland's traditional autumn Rugby 7's. A new | :01:00. | :01:07.
international season and a new coach for island. That brings new | :01:08. | :01:13.
expectation. The new era starts today in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium | :01:14. | :01:19.
against Samoa. That afternoon. It's the first of three November | :01:20. | :01:22.
internationals live here on the BBC. Australia and New Zealand are coming | :01:23. | :01:26.
up in the next fortnight, Ireland will hope to give their coach a good | :01:27. | :01:33.
start. Eddie O'Sullivan and form astray Liam International Ryan | :01:34. | :01:41.
Constable join me. What is the first international game like fora new | :01:42. | :01:45.
coach? Nerve racking, to say the least. They need a good start and a | :01:46. | :01:50.
good win. It is in at the deep end. I suppose this is the problem, this | :01:51. | :01:57.
game is not as easy as it seems. People think we can beat Samoa but | :01:58. | :02:02.
they are ranked above us. They have nothing to lose today. This is their | :02:03. | :02:07.
big game so it is a tough one. Joe Schmidt has been a very successful | :02:08. | :02:12.
provincial coach with two Heineken cup victories. It is much different, | :02:13. | :02:17.
though, coaching an international team. He was the popular choice. But | :02:18. | :02:23.
he was also the right choice to take this team forward. He will be used | :02:24. | :02:29.
to a season-long preparation, but now he has limited preparation, P | :02:30. | :02:33.
has his own ideas is trying to bring on that group of players, and he has | :02:34. | :02:37.
to do it quickly. It is all about results. There is huge expectation | :02:38. | :02:41.
around his arrival which needs to translate into winning performances. | :02:42. | :02:47.
Optimism is one thing they have. The last time these two teams met was | :02:48. | :02:49.
back in 2010. The skipper at 42 years of age is | :02:50. | :02:57.
going to lead to this one. Well, the traditional sirens start | :02:58. | :03:12.
didn't strike fear into Northern Ireland -- into Ireland. It wasn't | :03:13. | :03:18.
long before the Samoans hit back with a try of their own. | :03:19. | :03:29.
Wonderfully creative! Stringer and O'Gara got a hard-fought victory. | :03:30. | :03:42.
What do you make of Joe Schmidt's first selection? It is interesting. | :03:43. | :03:49.
He hasn't got full strength. He has got a very strong bench. Healy, | :03:50. | :03:59.
O'Brien, you would expect them to start. This is an opportunity to do | :04:00. | :04:04.
some experimenting. This is his only chance for that. We have a couple of | :04:05. | :04:10.
selections we didn't expect, but at the same time, you've trying to | :04:11. | :04:15.
balance that with the result. Do you think the coach will need that | :04:16. | :04:22.
firepower like O'Connell and Healy to get Ireland over the line? We've | :04:23. | :04:24.
seen the nature of the game. to get Ireland over the line? We've | :04:25. | :04:29.
Some of the changes are going to be enforced. With Samoa, some players | :04:30. | :04:35.
will need to come off. Tactically, you will make substitutions in the | :04:36. | :04:38.
different parts of the game to capitalise on opportunities so it is | :04:39. | :04:43.
a 23 man game, and I expect him to use all of the resources he has at | :04:44. | :04:50.
his disposal. Here are the thoughts of the new coach on his Number Ten. | :04:51. | :04:56.
I've been impressed by him. He is independent, he is quietly spoken. | :04:57. | :05:01.
He's pretty strong minded at the same time. He does his homework. He | :05:02. | :05:06.
knew exactly what we were doing this morning. He had the guys following | :05:07. | :05:14.
his lead. And that is a good small step before he takes a grand stride | :05:15. | :05:18.
this weekend. I think we are a work in progress but the work ethic is | :05:19. | :05:24.
great. Hopefully, with the hard work, you will see some continuity, | :05:25. | :05:34.
some ability to utilise the ball and space. And, hopefully, that will | :05:35. | :05:40.
lead to a great performance. An massive opportunity for Paddy | :05:41. | :05:47.
Jackson. His form has been great, he has played great. He needs | :05:48. | :05:56.
experience. We all assume guys are the finished product but you never | :05:57. | :06:00.
are. At his age and experience, he needs to get into his own and get | :06:01. | :06:05.
something else under his belt. Is his goal-kicking erratic? He has | :06:06. | :06:11.
missed a few, but we forget that the best players weren't consistent so | :06:12. | :06:15.
he needs time to bed in. You don't get a lot of time but you've got to | :06:16. | :06:20.
back him with this. He might miss a couple but he will get better and | :06:21. | :06:25.
better. It was criticised Lott after his international debut when he | :06:26. | :06:28.
missed a lot of kicks. But he took it on the chin and he really has | :06:29. | :06:32.
matured as a red player in the last 12 months. That's the thing. He's | :06:33. | :06:39.
relating back but he's very mature. He is very good, but he doesn't | :06:40. | :06:43.
listen to people when they say he is good or bad. He is very self | :06:44. | :06:52.
critical and analytical and he knows what he needs to do. It is about | :06:53. | :06:57.
work ethic. If you identify weaknesses, you get better. He has | :06:58. | :07:02.
applied himself certainly, and we have seen some wonderful kicking | :07:03. | :07:06.
performances through this season. Let's take a quick check on the | :07:07. | :07:12.
Samoan team. Whatever 15 they pick, we know they are going to be | :07:13. | :07:16.
abrasive and physical. Yes, they've matured as a team. If you go back a | :07:17. | :07:23.
few years, we expected the big hits. One of these guys are now playing | :07:24. | :07:30.
professionally, they are playing more structured, so they know how to | :07:31. | :07:34.
control the game better than they used to. They will bring the | :07:35. | :07:37.
physicality. They are missing some players but you can be sure that | :07:38. | :07:42.
that team is very balanced. Very few guys over 30, a lot of them playing | :07:43. | :07:51.
professionally. That is solid. Eight of them today help beat Wales last | :07:52. | :07:55.
year so they will be a tough that to crack. It is quality. Not only are | :07:56. | :07:59.
they playing in Europe but for the top teams. You've got them at | :08:00. | :08:08.
Northampton, Toulouse. These are guys being exposed to the top end of | :08:09. | :08:14.
European rugby and they will look to bring that experience through to the | :08:15. | :08:18.
international arena, lose the struck -- use the structures they've got | :08:19. | :08:22.
and combine it with the power and pace. For the Samoans, this is their | :08:23. | :08:27.
one big game in the Autumn Internationals. They then he got one | :08:28. | :08:35.
nation they've got to play. They will play the French Barbarians, | :08:36. | :08:38.
which will not matter to them, and they will play Georgia, so this is | :08:39. | :08:43.
their big game. Thank you for the moment. Time to see how Ireland will | :08:44. | :08:47.
fare against this Samoan team who have beaten Scotland, Wales and | :08:48. | :08:53.
Italy in the last 12 months. Reggie Corrigan and Jim Neilly are | :08:54. | :08:55.
the commentators. It is a very warm good evening. It | :08:56. | :09:10.
is cold, crisp and dry. We will have a minute silence in memory of Peter | :09:11. | :09:16.
Faialofa who died earlier this week at the age of 54. And straight into | :09:17. | :09:22.
the anthem of Samoa. A fairly decent number of Samoan | :09:23. | :10:51.
supporters at Lansdowne Road. More than 40,000 seats occupied. The | :10:52. | :10:57.
biggest attendance here for what is a good time. | :10:58. | :11:20.
Come the power and the glory. We have come to answer our country's | :11:21. | :12:32.
call. From the four proud provinces of | :12:33. | :12:35.
Ireland. Ireland, Ireland. | :12:36. | :12:45.
Together standing tall. Shoulder to shoulder. | :12:46. | :12:49.
We'll answer Ireland's call. Ireland, Ireland. | :12:50. | :13:11.
Together standing tall. Shoulder to shoulder. | :13:12. | :13:22.
We'll answer Ireland's call. We'll answer Ireland's call. | :13:23. | :13:36.
Jamie Heaslip takes his top off, as does Rob Kearney, they are Lyons | :13:37. | :13:46.
players. A great looking back 34 Samoa. | :13:47. | :14:39.
Looking at the replacement panel for Ireland, the pitch is in fantastic | :14:40. | :14:49.
condition. The Irish team line up and wait for the challenge which | :14:50. | :14:55.
will be laid down by the Samoans. It is their version of the Haka. The | :14:56. | :15:01.
skipper, over ten years ago when Ireland beat Samoa, you remember | :15:02. | :15:10.
that day well. I do indeed. Memories, good memories, slightly | :15:11. | :15:15.
different conditions to this. It was about 33 degrees over there with 98% | :15:16. | :15:20.
humidity. It was a hot day. But it is a beautiful evening. This is the | :15:21. | :15:27.
really only serious game the Samoans have at the moment. And they are | :15:28. | :15:32.
number seven in the rankings. Should France and Wales both lose, | :15:33. | :15:35.
Testament the Samoans could move up to fifth. Pressure to get results | :15:36. | :15:45.
today, but the Samoans are justified in their rankings and they will | :15:46. | :15:49.
create a big challenge even though they are missing players. A big test | :15:50. | :15:54.
for Ireland. A great four Nations tournament in June, they beat South | :15:55. | :16:01.
Africa and Italy. They are fielding ten of the side that played against | :16:02. | :16:05.
South Africa so this is a very good side. A couple of players missing | :16:06. | :16:09.
and not available and players injured. They will lay down this | :16:10. | :16:14.
challenge to Jamie Heaslip and his Irish side. And they have brought | :16:15. | :16:18.
along their own leader of the Haka. They are obviously not feeling the | :16:19. | :16:55.
cold and they have no sense of emotion, Brian O'Driscoll and this | :16:56. | :17:04.
Irish side. The Schmidt era gets underway. When Barnes and Luke | :17:05. | :17:14.
Pierce are the officials -- the assistance. And the Commissioner is | :17:15. | :17:19.
from Scotland. The referee is Steve Walsh. Conditions are perfect. | :17:20. | :17:26.
Ideal, and from an Irish point of view, they would want good | :17:27. | :17:30.
conditions to get off to a good start. It would have been nothing | :17:31. | :17:37.
worse than wind and rain. But it is absolutely perfect here at the Aviva | :17:38. | :17:40.
Stadium and hopefully it will lead to entertaining. The kick-off by | :17:41. | :17:52.
Ireland. Tusi Pisi was born in New Zealand and he and everybody else | :17:53. | :17:57.
would prefer it if they could be supplied with a football! What are | :17:58. | :18:03.
they doing? Where is the football? It has been handed to somebody in | :18:04. | :18:08.
the sidelines who wants to hang onto it. Steve Walsh are saying, can we | :18:09. | :18:15.
have it in the middle of the park? -- is saying. An element of fast! | :18:16. | :18:21.
They have overcome those difficulties now. -- farce. Has that | :18:22. | :18:32.
gone to ten metres? It has not, but Ireland have swept it up. The | :18:33. | :18:36.
referee has decided Ireland knocked it forward. That is very | :18:37. | :18:41.
interesting. The ball did not make it over the ten metre line when it | :18:42. | :18:45.
was played so I thought it would be brought back for a scrum. Steve | :18:46. | :18:50.
Walsh seemed to come up with a different interpretation. Unless the | :18:51. | :18:55.
laws have changed, that should have been a scrimmage back in the middle | :18:56. | :19:02.
of the park. Once they play at, they have to go for the ball. But Ireland | :19:03. | :19:08.
had the intent is to play so they have gone for the scrum. A big day | :19:09. | :19:17.
for 24-year-old Leinster prop Jack McGrath. A first cap for him. He has | :19:18. | :19:22.
worked very hard. That is good by Ireland. It is going to be a scrum | :19:23. | :19:31.
for Ireland. A superb start for Jack McGrath, perfect body position. | :19:32. | :19:36.
Power came through and he absolutely destroyed his opponent. He has given | :19:37. | :19:43.
away two kilos to his opposite man but that did not affect him. He has | :19:44. | :19:49.
a strong case for that position. Cian Healy, on the Irish bench, will | :19:50. | :19:53.
be thinking, what have I let myself in for? Jack McGrath did very well | :19:54. | :20:06.
against the Tigers. That is a solid looking Irish scrum. Slipped away to | :20:07. | :20:12.
O'Driscoll. In the middle of the park is Ole | :20:13. | :20:33.
Avei. The hooker for Samoa. Ireland get the penalty, so a good set | :20:34. | :20:37.
piece. A pressure produced on the early penalty. We are seeing a lot | :20:38. | :20:42.
of power in the Irish pack. A scrum have been excellent. A fantastic | :20:43. | :20:48.
setup, everybody is organised and in good positions and getting the drive | :20:49. | :20:52.
one. Before this game, the that would be crucial would be the set | :20:53. | :20:57.
piece. If they could dominate the line-out and set piece, but the | :20:58. | :21:01.
scrum was going to be questionable but they are dominating that area. | :21:02. | :21:05.
If that continues and they invite that kind of quality, it could be a | :21:06. | :21:16.
long way for the Samoans. Paddy Jackson. And Joe Schmidt does not | :21:17. | :21:26.
give much away. All eyes on the 21-year-old Paddy Jackson. His fifth | :21:27. | :21:29.
Irish cap. He struck it nicely. It did not look | :21:30. | :21:44.
easy. Such a lot of pressure on goalkeepers and Paddy Jackson has | :21:45. | :21:47.
but Ireland ahead with just over three minutes played. It is | :21:48. | :21:52.
important for Paddy Jackson to get that cake and get his confidence | :21:53. | :21:56.
where it needs to be. That will settle him into the game nicely. | :21:57. | :22:01.
Already, we are seeing intent from the Irish team. If they get that | :22:02. | :22:08.
quality ball from the scrum, the Irish team could do real damage in | :22:09. | :22:15.
that area. Gordon D'Arcy has let that loose. Just not concentrating. | :22:16. | :22:22.
His opposite number Johnny Leota comes through. And this is the | :22:23. | :22:28.
hooker. Ole Avei. Good solid work at the breakdown by Henry. Teofilo | :22:29. | :22:38.
Paulo, good work by him. And that has given the Samoans a chance. But | :22:39. | :22:46.
nudged forward by the men in blue, Viliamu Afatia comes through. There | :22:47. | :22:59.
was a mix-up is Johnny Leota came through. Just got knocked on. The | :23:00. | :23:05.
Samoans are not afraid to have a go. A mistake was punished very quickly, | :23:06. | :23:09.
the Samoans were on the ball and looking to move it when they got the | :23:10. | :23:14.
opportunity. After five minutes gone, this is the sixth game between | :23:15. | :23:19.
these sides. Ireland have won four, an impressive win in 1996. 40 points | :23:20. | :23:27.
against 25 at Lansdowne Road. The old Lansdowne Road. Much loved. | :23:28. | :23:37.
He thought about the pass and changed his mind. That was rather | :23:38. | :23:40.
awkward. Taken in by Samoa. This is Tii Paulo, he likes to run. | :23:41. | :24:10.
A good wraparound and that is well done. There is a big gap. The right | :24:11. | :24:16.
wing had come right across the wing, this is good stuff for the visitors | :24:17. | :24:20.
and it shows what they can do and the game they like to play. Good | :24:21. | :24:27.
tackle by Mike McCarthy. Jack McGrath thought better of putting | :24:28. | :24:33.
his hands on. A penalty against Mike Ross. He got himself offside. That | :24:34. | :24:40.
is what happens if you are struggling and the defensive line is | :24:41. | :24:44.
broken. Too easy from the Samoans with a simple wraparound pass which | :24:45. | :24:53.
caught everybody out. I am watching the way the Samoans are setting up, | :24:54. | :24:57.
they are putting very few layers into the breakdown area so there are | :24:58. | :25:01.
plenty of opportunities in the backline with big men taking balls | :25:02. | :25:07.
and running at smaller men in the Irish backline. And when the Irish | :25:08. | :25:11.
defence is scrambling, they find themselves offside and that was Mike | :25:12. | :25:16.
Ross slow getting back onside and now the Samoans have a great chance | :25:17. | :25:24.
to equal the scoreline. Concern in the Samoan camp about their tight | :25:25. | :25:33.
head prop. Logovi'i Mulipola seems to have done something to a calf | :25:34. | :25:36.
muscle and is having that heavily strapped. But he is under severe | :25:37. | :25:42.
pressure in those scrums. He is turning game because the pressure is | :25:43. | :25:49.
coming in from Jack McGrath on the outside and he may well have injured | :25:50. | :25:55.
his calf muscle. Tusi Pisi in front and he makes no mistake and we are | :25:56. | :26:03.
back to level pegging. I am not sure the tight head prop will be able to | :26:04. | :26:07.
continue, he is hobbling very badly. Ireland's inability to make | :26:08. | :26:11.
something of the restart kick has cost him dear and he is going off. | :26:12. | :26:18.
That is not good for Samoa because they already struggling, you have do | :26:19. | :26:21.
imagine if that is the first choice that the second choice might also | :26:22. | :26:24.
find it difficult against Jack McGrath. It will be interesting to | :26:25. | :26:30.
see in the next scrum how that affects the Samoans. A sympathetic | :26:31. | :26:38.
round of applause for the player from the Leicester Tigers. And the | :26:39. | :26:44.
player coming on is James Johnston, easier to pronounce! And here comes | :26:45. | :26:50.
Brian O'Driscoll. It did not go to anybody in particular. The ball is | :26:51. | :26:55.
all over the place and Jack McGrath could not control it. James | :26:56. | :27:01.
Johnston, number 18, all over it. The referee is playing advantage to | :27:02. | :27:09.
the Irish knock forward. Kahn Fotuali'i trying to organise his | :27:10. | :27:16.
troops. Ireland and Rory Best try to hold them up, no advantage to the | :27:17. | :27:19.
men in blue. We will see how Mr Johnson gets on. It will be | :27:20. | :27:25.
interesting. The Samoans are going into the contact area very high and | :27:26. | :27:29.
that is playing into the hands of the Irish team. The Irish or expert | :27:30. | :27:34.
poachers and they are good at holding the man up and avoiding them | :27:35. | :27:43.
going to ground. -- or expert. The Samoans are facilitating that so | :27:44. | :27:47.
they need to get to ground quicker and provide a better scrum-half | :27:48. | :27:58.
Hall. Another -- ball. Another injury. | :27:59. | :28:03.
Brian O'Driscoll is shaking his head, not happy about that flick | :28:04. | :28:10.
which did not know to anybody in particular. When they work, they | :28:11. | :28:16.
look wonderful. But if they are out by the smallest amount, it creates | :28:17. | :28:20.
an opportunity for the opposition and the Samoans were quick to react. | :28:21. | :28:25.
They got there in numbers. Samoa will not want to lose another | :28:26. | :28:30.
player. They have had to make a late change in the replacements panel and | :28:31. | :28:34.
the coaching staff looking anxious. But happy enough with the scoreline, | :28:35. | :28:48.
three each. Ofisa Treviranus played for several seasons with the men | :28:49. | :28:53.
from the West. How it works out, I do not know. The man on the right | :28:54. | :29:04.
wing is the brother. Samoan genealogy is not my strong point! I | :29:05. | :29:11.
would not be able to help you! The Samoans are trying to get the height | :29:12. | :29:15.
and trying to lock down the right-hand side but they seem unable | :29:16. | :29:19.
to do that with Jack McGrath and Rory Best opposite. Difficulties in | :29:20. | :29:29.
the scrum for the Samoans. Somebody is playing drums. This is new for me | :29:30. | :29:38.
at Lansdowne Road. That is another good scrum from Jack McGrath. The | :29:39. | :29:43.
human -- the Samoan scrum under huge pressure on -- and if Jack McGrath | :29:44. | :29:49.
stops now and comes off, he will be happy. It started with Jack McGrath | :29:50. | :29:55.
at Mike Ross on the tight head side, and this is the most difficult | :29:56. | :29:59.
thing, but his side of the scrum up, got the power, and the three | :30:00. | :30:04.
combining brilliantly together. To see that power reading from the | :30:05. | :30:10.
tight head side, it does suggest that as this game goes on and | :30:11. | :30:14.
tiredness comes into it, the Samoans will be under massive pressure at | :30:15. | :30:20.
scrum time. Has the new sequence made a difference? I think it has | :30:21. | :30:27.
made things different, there seems to be less collapse. | :30:28. | :30:46.
The new scrum Lawes are set up to hurry this up. Free kicks could come | :30:47. | :31:03.
aplenty. Conor Murray, his 20th cap this evening. | :31:04. | :31:48.
Inside the 22 of the opposition. And across the line they go. The | :31:49. | :31:56.
Samoans, I have a feeling, will get a scrummage. That was a nice little | :31:57. | :32:03.
sequence. It was. I am very interested to see the Samoans are | :32:04. | :32:07.
committing nobody at the breakdown. They are allowing Ireland to have | :32:08. | :32:11.
free ball, to move it as much as they want. It is an indication they | :32:12. | :32:14.
fear the backline and they are worried about them getting past | :32:15. | :32:21.
them. But they need to compete at the breakdown. They need to slow | :32:22. | :32:24.
down the quick ball. If Ireland continue in this vein and the iron | :32:25. | :32:30.
out all those little errors, you'd have to imagine it is only a matter | :32:31. | :32:34.
of time before they start to break down the Samoan defence. Kahn | :32:35. | :32:40.
Fotuali'i wasn't able to go to the four Nations tournament in June. A | :32:41. | :32:52.
slightly better scrum. That was an interesting dummy. There they go. | :32:53. | :32:58.
That was a wonderful tackle by O'Driscoll. | :32:59. | :33:10.
Well, O'Driscoll, still plenty of pace in those 35-year-old legs. Cut | :33:11. | :33:24.
him down beautifully. It was McFadden he gave the penalty | :33:25. | :33:27.
against. He released himself from the tackle and went back in, and | :33:28. | :33:33.
according to the referee, he lost his footing and wasn't supporting | :33:34. | :33:36.
his own weight at the crucial moment as he put his hands on the ball. You | :33:37. | :33:43.
can go in and compete, he is in a good position originally but loses | :33:44. | :33:47.
his feet. And a penalty given against them, some might say a | :33:48. | :33:49.
little bit harsh. That's knocked forward by Samoa. The | :33:50. | :34:19.
referee decided otherwise. The crowd have disagreed with him. | :34:20. | :34:59.
What a piece of acceleration there. Good tackle. Johnson is in the | :35:00. | :35:13.
middle of that. Ireland will be relieved to get that penalty. | :35:14. | :35:19.
There's all sorts of gaps opening up but the Samoans are creating those | :35:20. | :35:24.
gaps. And in particular George Pisi is creating them. He's taking on the | :35:25. | :35:30.
defence of Ireland, and he has got through a number of tackles. He is | :35:31. | :35:40.
making a real impression. They are bringing in their players back on | :35:41. | :35:44.
the inside and it has caught the Irish on two occasions. The Irish | :35:45. | :35:50.
defence seemed to be standing off and a little bit naive in the fact | :35:51. | :35:54.
he is coming into the line. He almost got away there. A bit of a | :35:55. | :36:03.
stoppage, some tension -- some attention to Jack Lam. It's | :36:04. | :36:11.
interesting watching the Samoans. In attack, they look confident, they | :36:12. | :36:17.
are happy on the ball, but the opposite is true when they are in | :36:18. | :36:21.
defence. The defensive line is just waiting for the Irish to run at | :36:22. | :36:25.
them. They need to change that around. They need to get off the | :36:26. | :36:29.
defensive line, both forward and get in the faces of the Irish backline | :36:30. | :36:34.
and put them under pressure. If they stand back and if they let the Irish | :36:35. | :36:38.
move the ball, they will be in trouble. A lot of them have been | :36:39. | :36:45.
playing in the Rugby 7's circuit. The style of game they play, they | :36:46. | :36:50.
are very confident going forward. Often, the defence lets them down | :36:51. | :36:56.
because that is an aspect that needs to be looked at. That's got to | :36:57. | :36:59.
change because they will be punished by this team. | :37:00. | :37:24.
After that early setback, Samoa are gaining in confidence. | :37:25. | :37:34.
That was a clever kick by Paddy Jackson. | :37:35. | :37:43.
He's more annoyed at the fact he didn't manage to take that ball | :37:44. | :38:00.
because it was a very bad ball from Pisi which almost went behind him. | :38:01. | :38:05.
McFadden was in a good position, but he was in the end unfortunate that | :38:06. | :38:11.
he wasn't able to hang onto it. That was a let off for the Samoans. Jack | :38:12. | :38:21.
McGrath is having a word about the scrummaging law. You can expect some | :38:22. | :38:26.
pressure from this scrum. Every scrum now for Ireland, both | :38:27. | :38:29.
opposition and their owner, is going to be ones they will attack. All the | :38:30. | :38:34.
back row is standing down on this one. A serious surge on this one. | :38:35. | :38:42.
If the Samoans can win this, they might think of running this. A | :38:43. | :38:48.
slightly better scrum by the visitors. | :38:49. | :38:57.
They might have turned that one over. Well, they haven't, but that | :38:58. | :39:11.
was great work from D'Arcy. Everyone was in there. That is the thing with | :39:12. | :39:16.
this Irish team and the way they play. If they see a sniff of an | :39:17. | :39:19.
opportunity the ball can be turned over, they are counter rucking, | :39:20. | :39:24.
going back through the middle and driving the Samoans back off the | :39:25. | :39:28.
ball, which is what you want from your team. Interesting enough, in | :39:29. | :39:32.
that phase of play, the Samoans had about five players walk on the | :39:33. | :39:36.
left-hand side to the island three in defence. If they could have found | :39:37. | :39:39.
some quick ball, Ireland could have been caught out but because of the | :39:40. | :39:44.
rate work at the breakdown and D'Arcy in particular, you can see | :39:45. | :39:49.
those two arms going up in the air to show the referee you're legally | :39:50. | :39:55.
going in. That work alone got the turnover for Ireland. Luckily | :39:56. | :39:59.
enough, as I said, because of the overlap on the left-hand side the | :40:00. | :40:02.
Samoans had created. Initially, that was a great tackle by Paddy Jackson. | :40:03. | :40:11.
He has picked up that loose ball, made some ground, he has kicked | :40:12. | :40:16.
cleverly, kept the ball in play, it wouldn't be their intention to put | :40:17. | :40:19.
the ball out. He has deliberately kept the ball in play. | :40:20. | :40:26.
So, so far, a very good start from Jackson. Still three apiece with | :40:27. | :40:36.
almost 19 minutes gone. They've got to man out to the far side, D'Arcy | :40:37. | :40:47.
and Bowe. O'Connell looking directly back from the scrum. If they can get | :40:48. | :40:55.
quick ball, this is an ideal situation where a team would look | :40:56. | :41:03.
for a ball straight back to the number eight's feed. The defenders | :41:04. | :41:10.
are split. They've got D'Arcy on the right side and Bowe to worry about. | :41:11. | :41:17.
There are also looking at Heaslip. Jackson has options on the inside | :41:18. | :41:22.
and the outside as well. The way defence is going, the scrum has been | :41:23. | :41:35.
won and the penalty has been given. At the edge of Paddy Jackson's | :41:36. | :41:40.
range. He might be asked to put it in the corner. We will see. That was | :41:41. | :41:46.
a good scrum and I think he will go for three points. The important | :41:47. | :41:51.
thing to do in a game like this is to try to get points on the board, | :41:52. | :41:58.
push away from the Samoans, if possible, and put out into their | :41:59. | :42:03.
minds. As the game progresses, you might find gaps in the defence. You | :42:04. | :42:07.
don't need to score tries at this early stage of the games by forcing | :42:08. | :42:13.
it. The opportunity is there to take three points, and that is a wise | :42:14. | :42:18.
decision. Paddy Jackson was the only source of points when Ireland played | :42:19. | :42:22.
in the Six Nations. He struck that nicely. That is a | :42:23. | :42:38.
very good kick by Jackson. That is a confidence boosting kick for Ireland | :42:39. | :42:45.
and Paddy Jackson, and for the fans. That was a great kick. The | :42:46. | :42:49.
interesting thing is that there was at least ten metres to spare on that | :42:50. | :42:57.
kick. So, you know, he wouldn't be renowned for his distance kicking, | :42:58. | :42:57.
Knocked forward by the Samoans. The initial knock forward was by the men | :42:58. | :44:15.
in blue and it is an Irish scrummage. The differences the | :44:16. | :44:22.
Samoans are committing a lot more people to the breakdowns. They are | :44:23. | :44:25.
securing and getting ball. That means they don't have the same | :44:26. | :44:29.
numbers and run as they did have for those opening 20 minutes. And just | :44:30. | :44:34.
at that point, they pretty run out of numbers. It was a bad mistake, a | :44:35. | :44:38.
knock on that shouldn't have happened. It was well marshalled and | :44:39. | :44:41.
probably would have been driven back into tackle. It is very difficult | :44:42. | :44:47.
for the Samoans. What do they do? Commit less to the breakdown and not | :44:48. | :44:52.
get to the ball? They really need to be committing three to four players | :44:53. | :44:57.
maximum to every breakdown so the players have to make sure they are | :44:58. | :45:03.
making an impact. Well, there is the view the referee is getting. Ireland | :45:04. | :45:16.
are just inside their own half. Peter O'Mahony captained the team in | :45:17. | :45:22.
the USA. A both of those teams -- both of those -- they won both of | :45:23. | :45:31.
those games. I am surprised Steve Walsh has not taken a stand on this | :45:32. | :45:36.
area and has not started giving free kicks because it is a bit messy. | :45:37. | :45:45.
Chris Henry and Jamie Heaslip are looking to their right to see what | :45:46. | :45:51.
is going on with the Samoan defence. It is about winning a Queen ball. -- | :45:52. | :46:03.
a Queen ball. -- clean. That had to be able penalty and he is giving | :46:04. | :46:08.
them a severe warning. Johnston is taking that down, no question. It is | :46:09. | :46:17.
clear to anybody, the tight head prop is on his knees before the Wall | :46:18. | :46:20.
has come in. When you see the shoulders topping the low height and | :46:21. | :46:27.
the head dropping to the ground, it you know what the problem is. A good | :46:28. | :46:31.
kick by Paddy Jackson has put Ireland in a good position as we | :46:32. | :46:37.
approach 25 minutes. Samoa have conceded four penalties. Both of | :46:38. | :46:43.
those have been at the scrummage. A bit of damp weather and Rory Best is | :46:44. | :46:48.
making sure there is nothing damp about the ball. Well taken by Devin | :46:49. | :47:00.
Toner. Chris Henry has it. Ireland shunting forward, they have got a | :47:01. | :47:06.
head of steam. Samoa are coming in and making no attempt to disguise | :47:07. | :47:11.
that. The referee has his hand out for the penalty, can Ireland | :47:12. | :47:16.
complete the job? Henry is in the middle. They seem to be over the | :47:17. | :47:19.
line! The referee has given the try. Conor Murray at the bottom of it but | :47:20. | :47:34.
it is Peter O'Mahony who has got his first Irish international try. Well | :47:35. | :47:38.
worked all the way. You could see the Irish team, the forward players | :47:39. | :47:43.
together as the kit went into touch, a good touch by Paddy Jackson. -- | :47:44. | :47:55.
kit. -- kick. It is important to have total upfront between the | :47:56. | :48:00.
forwards. Get yourself going and they set it up perfectly. The | :48:01. | :48:05.
important thing is they were patient. They had a penalty but they | :48:06. | :48:10.
did not get frustrated, they did not get overly excited and nobody went | :48:11. | :48:17.
on their own. A good try, a good start. A 20 metre shunned by the | :48:18. | :48:29.
Irish pack. -- shunt. A tight angle by Jackson. No conversion. I think | :48:30. | :48:34.
George Smith will be pretty pleased. There has been decent backplate I | :48:35. | :48:42.
Ireland. -- act play by Ireland. -- back. They have worked on those week | :48:43. | :48:51.
after week. A lot of experience. Nobody better than a Munster man to | :48:52. | :48:56.
know how to get over the line. Peter O'Mahony, 24 years of age, the | :48:57. | :49:03.
Munster captain for this season. Playing his 13th game in a row for | :49:04. | :49:08.
Ireland. Let's see if Ireland can gather this again. Well taken by | :49:09. | :49:17.
Fergus McFadden. Outside the 22. Murray is looking to kick. That was | :49:18. | :49:25.
well gathered by the Samoans. Good strong work. That was by 35 macro. | :49:26. | :49:31.
Good stuff by the men in blue. A good switch of direction, to CPC | :49:32. | :49:47.
-7 macro. Well tackled by Chris Henry. Taken on by Jack Lam, that | :49:48. | :49:59.
was nudged forward. I think that was called for Steve Walsh. A slight | :50:00. | :50:04.
nudge in the contact area, a good call by the touch judge that was | :50:05. | :50:08.
missed by the referee. Tried to get that flowed and a slight knock-on. | :50:09. | :50:21.
-- that flowed. -- off-load. As the Samoans try to launch the attack, | :50:22. | :50:29.
Tusi Pisi is winning -- is running sideways towards the line and is | :50:30. | :50:35.
putting on pressure. He needs to get the past slightly earlier. It is | :50:36. | :50:42.
about primary possession and Samoa have very little coming up to half | :50:43. | :50:49.
an hour played. Steve Walsh is going to have to take a more acerbic view | :50:50. | :50:59.
of this. I think you will, he has already given a penalty against this | :51:00. | :51:05.
-- a think you will, he has already given a penalty against the Samoans. | :51:06. | :51:12.
Unless he does, we will watch a number of resets at a time and that | :51:13. | :51:13.
is not what we want. Devin Toner is almost seven feet | :51:14. | :51:27.
tall, the tallest man to play for Ireland by some distance. A lovely | :51:28. | :51:39.
pass, Brian O'Driscoll is back inside. That was well read by the | :51:40. | :51:45.
blue defence. Mike McCarthy steps it up. Chris Henry, did he come in from | :51:46. | :51:53.
the side? He did not, but somebody went over the top and prevented the | :51:54. | :51:59.
ball from coming back, it might have been the Irish try scorer. A lovely | :52:00. | :52:05.
pass by Jackson. Very well read by the Samoan defence. He just mind it | :52:06. | :52:14.
up perfectly and for a moment, I thought McFadden was gone. A | :52:15. | :52:21.
brilliant defensive tackle. Offence and Steve fans as they call it. -- | :52:22. | :52:29.
defence. I thought the Samoans were going to kick the ball into the | :52:30. | :52:32.
corner but they went for more points on the board. If this is | :52:33. | :52:41.
successful, this could be a converted try. They are doing a | :52:42. | :52:44.
Mexican wave. They will be dizzy! Tusi Pisi has given that a decent | :52:45. | :53:08.
kick and that is a very good kick. He plays outside half for | :53:09. | :53:18.
Wellington. He is on -- he was born in Apia. The Samoans need to keep in | :53:19. | :53:25.
touch with the game. They cannot afford to let Ireland get away too | :53:26. | :53:30.
much. Not the most orthodox style, what it went over. The referee is | :53:31. | :53:38.
happy enough to play on. It came back on the Samoan side. Kahn | :53:39. | :53:47.
Fotuali'i is complaining and Ireland giveaway another penalty. A lack of | :53:48. | :53:52.
discipline. A clear call by Steve Walsh, a green release. I think he | :53:53. | :53:57.
gave the penalty against Brian O'Driscoll. Held onto it to one. | :53:58. | :54:03.
O'Driscoll shaking his head, -- held onto it for too long. That is a good | :54:04. | :54:10.
kick to set up a decent field position, courtesy of Tusi Pisi?. | :54:11. | :54:18.
You mentioned the Mexican wave and people getting involved, it has gone | :54:19. | :54:23.
a bit quiet in the stadium. There is an expectation for fans they were | :54:24. | :54:28.
going to see intrinsic backline moves that we have seen Joe Smit | :54:29. | :54:32.
bring to teams before -- Joe Schmidt. There has not been much | :54:33. | :54:37.
penetration at the back end, they have not been able to get past the | :54:38. | :54:43.
Samoans as much as they thought they could. That is a free against | :54:44. | :54:47.
Ireland, taken quickly either Samoans. That climate takes it | :54:48. | :54:59.
forward. This is Tii Paulo, from the Cardiff Blues. A good sidestep by | :55:00. | :55:16.
Jack Lam. Mike Ross stands firm. Good work by Mike McCarthy. But | :55:17. | :55:26.
Ireland have given away the penalty. That was given against McCarthy. | :55:27. | :55:29.
Steve Walsh has been very clear in his directions. He is ordering the | :55:30. | :55:34.
players away and he is calling out the numbers. You can clearly hear | :55:35. | :55:40.
him saying that. But Samoa on making ground in that area. They do not | :55:41. | :55:46.
have many options outside. The back seem to get tied up and it looks | :55:47. | :55:50.
like everything is broken down but somebody takes it up. I am | :55:51. | :55:56.
particularly impressed with the hooker. When they take that direct | :55:57. | :56:00.
route, they make ground and penalties like this, suddenly they | :56:01. | :56:02.
are only two points behind. Getting a bit of treatment, I think | :56:03. | :56:14.
that is Chris Henry. And that is of the post! McFadden takes it from | :56:15. | :56:19.
Devin Toner. Good support from Rory Best. Another | :56:20. | :56:38.
man who has captained Ireland. That is not a bad kick by Tommy Bowe. And | :56:39. | :56:49.
the Samoan fullback had no option but to step into touch. He did not | :56:50. | :56:54.
even gather the ball and it was a clever decision. Ireland keeping the | :56:55. | :56:59.
ball in play, that is putting pressure on Samoa. That pressure is | :57:00. | :57:04.
present because of the good chasing wine. He could feel the green | :57:05. | :57:09.
jerseys breathing down his neck and he knocked the ball into touch. | :57:10. | :57:15.
Ireland have lost Chris Henry so that means a reappearance by Sean | :57:16. | :57:25.
O'Brien. A bit of a trip, I think that was accidental. The crowd | :57:26. | :57:34.
disagree. Well is issued by Rob Carney. -- well-positioned. A good | :57:35. | :57:38.
strike with his left foot. That is moved out wide to 25 macro. | :57:39. | :57:51.
-- 25 macro. Just brushing off Sean O'Brien, | :57:52. | :58:07.
which does not happen too often. A good forward ball by the Samoans. | :58:08. | :58:14.
Jack Lam goes on his own. Good work in the breakdown by Ireland. Gordon | :58:15. | :58:21.
D'Arcy takes his weight on the feet. The referee says, play on. Good work | :58:22. | :58:27.
by Jack McGrath. A good steel. And he has won a foot in the scrum. I | :58:28. | :58:35.
have been watching him play at various junior levels and they are | :58:36. | :58:39.
playing a lot of rugby for Leinster and he has worked hard at his game | :58:40. | :58:45.
and his fitness and his strength. Everything you have said is correct. | :58:46. | :58:51.
He is really committed to making it as a professional rugby player and | :58:52. | :58:54.
he has made sacrifices to get to this level, he deserves to be there | :58:55. | :59:00.
on his form and he has held his own today in the scrum. He has been very | :59:01. | :59:08.
good. And in the loose. Three and a half minutes remaining. After the | :59:09. | :59:16.
try by Peter O'Mahony, Ireland are taking the foot off the gas. They | :59:17. | :59:19.
would dearly like something before the interval. A lot of mistakes by | :59:20. | :59:26.
Ireland. Going into contact. I am sure that is something Joe Schmidt | :59:27. | :59:31.
will talk to them about at half-time, cut out the mistakes. A | :59:32. | :59:34.
good Irish scrum. McFadden passes for word. The palace | :59:35. | :59:52.
was forward but every single Samoa on this side was offside, so as he | :59:53. | :59:57.
tried to run into the area, there is nothing but five players in an | :59:58. | :00:02.
offside position. It should be a penalty to Ireland in that situation | :00:03. | :00:08.
because it was almost forced forward pass because of the wall of blue in | :00:09. | :00:17.
the way. The referee wasn't looking and his assistants were not looking | :00:18. | :00:25.
either. Well, Ireland have made more and missed more tackles. The Samoans | :00:26. | :00:30.
have been outstanding in terms of the carries. Statistically, Samoa | :00:31. | :00:34.
have had the better of the first half so far. But the school board | :00:35. | :00:40.
does not reflect that. They should have had three points. There wasn't | :00:41. | :00:48.
one player following up to get the rebound off the post. | :00:49. | :01:01.
Sean O'Brien, first game at this level since the Lions tour. | :01:02. | :01:14.
Referee has given a penalty, or scrummage? There was an off-load, | :01:15. | :01:28.
but he was under a lot of pressure as he was receiving that ball. | :01:29. | :01:34.
Joe Schmidt, with his first half of international rugby under his belt. | :01:35. | :01:55.
Still a very tasty Irish bench to be unleashed. The scrum has gone down | :01:56. | :02:04.
but the referee is happy to play at. McFadden can't quite make it. Touch | :02:05. | :02:50.
judge puts his flag up. O'Driscoll denied one of his trademark close | :02:51. | :02:54.
range schools. The referee will bring them back to have a look. | :02:55. | :03:01.
There may have been a legal tackle after the ball was passed. I missed | :03:02. | :03:14.
that one myself. I was busy looking back at Johnny Leota. He was trying | :03:15. | :03:21.
to make the tackle, and Steve Walsh made a great tackle. Great off-load | :03:22. | :03:32.
by Ireland. O'Driscoll did his trademark move, but good defence | :03:33. | :03:37.
from the Samoans, just managed to keep them out. I think it was a foot | :03:38. | :03:44.
in touch. He didn't get across the line but we will have to see if | :03:45. | :03:52.
there was an offence before that. Now, what was the problem? The ball | :03:53. | :03:58.
was passed. Oh, that is dangerous. Now that is dangerous. I am pretty | :03:59. | :04:10.
sure that was George Pisi. I expect there will be action. There will be | :04:11. | :04:14.
action taken against that. They have come down very strongly this year | :04:15. | :04:18.
against anything which looks like that tackle. Is it a penalty only? | :04:19. | :04:36.
His whole upper body was lifted way up the and the horizontal and he was | :04:37. | :04:45.
dumped down. I think it could be a yellow card. He has asked for a | :04:46. | :04:54.
recommendation. I don't know what the delay is because there it is up | :04:55. | :04:59.
on the screen. There is the tackle. Up he goes, down he came. That was | :05:00. | :05:06.
dangerous. He eased off just as Bowe was reaching the ground. It looks | :05:07. | :05:12.
pretty bad. He has made his decision now but it looks like he flicks the | :05:13. | :05:18.
legs up into the air. The issue is he got up, he was twisted and he | :05:19. | :05:23.
wasn't put around safely. It is a yellow card. -- put to ground. That | :05:24. | :05:33.
is pretty good of the referee. There is clear guidelines on it, everybody | :05:34. | :05:38.
knows the dangers. You can see the twist in the tackle and that is the | :05:39. | :05:43.
giveaway. And then the legs come up so quickly into the air. There was | :05:44. | :05:48.
no care to bring the player down. Even if you've made that mistake, | :05:49. | :05:52.
you don't need to do that, and you got to try to control the player. | :05:53. | :05:56.
There was no control, that is a yellow card and it is a big blow. | :05:57. | :06:01.
They know what they are doing at this level. He could have tackled | :06:02. | :06:09.
Tommy Bowe. He chose to do the uplift. As you say, the ball was | :06:10. | :06:16.
gone, there was no need for the tackle. He had gone past it at that | :06:17. | :06:24.
stage. This is going to be the last of scrappy first half. That is a | :06:25. | :06:36.
lovely kick. A fine kick by Paddy Jackson. Ireland will not be | :06:37. | :06:43.
altogether unhappy. It has been a scrappy start from Joe Schmidt as | :06:44. | :06:58.
the brand-new Irish coach. Ireland lead at Lansdowne Road, 14-6. | :06:59. | :07:08.
It has been a stop start first 40 minutes. The Samoans threw down | :07:09. | :07:17.
their traditional challenge, Paddy Jackson answered it. He has kicked | :07:18. | :07:21.
pretty nicely in the first half. Ireland rumbled over for the only | :07:22. | :07:28.
try of the half. Peter O'Mahony with the touchdown. The Samoans have kept | :07:29. | :07:36.
themselves in the game thanks to Irish indiscipline. Although Paddy | :07:37. | :07:39.
Jackson opened up that 8-point lead with that excellent penalty before | :07:40. | :07:42.
half-time. What has been a pretty first half. | :07:43. | :07:50.
It has been scrappy. It is down to the tactics more than anything. | :07:51. | :07:54.
Ireland have kicked a lot of ball away. Samoa have been in possession | :07:55. | :08:01.
a lot, running around. They did have to defend for a long period, but | :08:02. | :08:05.
Ireland have kept their shape, they've done a good job, they've won | :08:06. | :08:12.
a lot of turnovers. So there has been a lot of scrappy play. Was that | :08:13. | :08:17.
the first half Joe Schmidt had imagined at the start of his | :08:18. | :08:22.
tenure? Not as fluent as they would have liked, which is a clear tactic | :08:23. | :08:26.
from Ireland. They are not playing in their own half, and that is | :08:27. | :08:32.
unusual to see a team struggling so much at set pieces have such a glut | :08:33. | :08:36.
of possession. That's come from their kicks and they've had a lot of | :08:37. | :08:40.
ball in hand, but it has been that defensive work at the breakdown that | :08:41. | :08:44.
has allowed Ireland to come out on top. Lots of scrums, very few | :08:45. | :08:49.
line-outs, but from one of them Ireland scored that excellent try. | :08:50. | :08:53.
Yes, I think they were always going to take the ball. The Samoans were | :08:54. | :09:00.
always going to struggle against the Irish drive. It is classic, they | :09:01. | :09:06.
kept their composure, their discipline, and you can see the | :09:07. | :09:10.
Samoans falling off and Ireland keep their shape. They were in penalty | :09:11. | :09:18.
territory as well. Here is good execution. They've done very well. | :09:19. | :09:24.
That is the one set piece play they executed well and it led to the | :09:25. | :09:29.
school. It lays down a marker against a team which prides itself | :09:30. | :09:34.
in its physicality. It does. Technically, they are a team who | :09:35. | :09:38.
have struggled come set pieces. The scrum has been the prosaic -- | :09:39. | :09:43.
pervasive feature in this game and Ireland are on top. A couple of | :09:44. | :09:47.
line-outs, they have fared better in that aspect as well, so expect to | :09:48. | :09:50.
see Ireland look to exploit that advantage they have there. They | :09:51. | :09:56.
played a controlled game, they don't want this to get loose and the | :09:57. | :10:01.
Samoans love to play with wit and tempo. Ireland have managed to | :10:02. | :10:06.
control that but they will need to focus on those areas of strength in | :10:07. | :10:10.
the second half. What about Paddy Jackson? He has done very well. He | :10:11. | :10:16.
has made the tackles, he has also kicked well. He's missed | :10:17. | :10:18.
conversion, it wasn't easy but he has been solid and he has got the | :10:19. | :10:25.
backline moving. I think he is in control, he is calm and collected. | :10:26. | :10:29.
He is doing what Ireland need him to do. He has kicked well but his game | :10:30. | :10:34.
management has been good as well. That is one of the extracts of its | :10:35. | :10:41.
game. -- that is one of the strengths of his game. We see | :10:42. | :10:49.
defensively he's very brave. No area of weakness in his game. It is these | :10:50. | :10:54.
refinements, this long click, real confidence builder, and overall, | :10:55. | :10:59.
he's managed the game well, he is performing his role, and his | :11:00. | :11:02.
distribution has been up to the mark. You surprised Ireland have | :11:03. | :11:07.
kicked so much ball away in the first half? I am surprised. I would | :11:08. | :11:13.
say that Joe Schmidt would say about the accuracy of the kicking. Joe | :11:14. | :11:18.
Schmidt likes kicking and he uses it effectively at Leinster, but you | :11:19. | :11:21.
don't kick the ball away loosely. That is a loose kick. The Samoans | :11:22. | :11:26.
will run back. If you click loosely, this should be in the stand | :11:27. | :11:32.
if you are playing Samoa. It hits the grass, Samoa will come back. And | :11:33. | :11:37.
they are a team that thrive on this open field broken play situation. | :11:38. | :11:43.
O'Driscoll gets picked up, they come back. What is the key? You've got to | :11:44. | :11:52.
make them go back to their defensive line-up. You've got put it out of | :11:53. | :11:55.
play because their line-out has struggled. The reason we've only had | :11:56. | :11:59.
to make line-out is because we haven't kicked the ball out of play. | :12:00. | :12:04.
With Samoa, you've got to create the tempo and not create those broken | :12:05. | :12:09.
field situations, where they thrive. Probably Joe is saying, let's | :12:10. | :12:13.
control our kicking more, let's create some opportunities. The scrum | :12:14. | :12:19.
isn't glamorous part of the game. And we have seen plenty of it. It | :12:20. | :12:24.
has been very effective for Ireland. Whether in a tackled offensive. | :12:25. | :12:31.
Technically, they are very good. That scrum comes around, and once | :12:32. | :12:37.
you get the dominance, those 50-50 calls tend to go your way. Ireland | :12:38. | :12:45.
certainly have got the upper hand in that facet of play, and it is giving | :12:46. | :12:50.
them possession, albeit they are not utilising it. With so much dominance | :12:51. | :12:54.
there, should they have more points on the board? They shouldn't, in a | :12:55. | :12:58.
way, because what has happened is that they've kicked their possession | :12:59. | :13:07.
away. Most of our set pieces have been in our own half. The tactic is | :13:08. | :13:12.
not to run out of our own half but kick out of our own half. | :13:13. | :13:17.
Territorially, we haven't done well. So, you know, I think we need to get | :13:18. | :13:23.
more field position and when we do that, we will score. Unfortunately, | :13:24. | :13:27.
we have dominated the scrum but it has not been comfortable to watch. | :13:28. | :13:32.
As you say, when you kick the ball away, we will take a look at the | :13:33. | :13:38.
example of this, of what's Samoa can do when they get the ball. | :13:39. | :13:42.
Individually, they've got the ability, the power to push through | :13:43. | :13:46.
the tackle to create possession. And they like to play with wit. They are | :13:47. | :13:51.
making some clean line breaks, unable to finish it off, but they | :13:52. | :13:55.
are able to breakdown defences but they rely on that front foot | :13:56. | :13:59.
possession which creates uncertainty defensively, which they can exploit | :14:00. | :14:04.
with their power and pace. I suppose, important penalty on the | :14:05. | :14:07.
stroke of half-time from Paddy Jackson. Ireland start the second | :14:08. | :14:13.
half with a man up as well. They start against 14 men, they need to | :14:14. | :14:17.
get some field position, grind out some scores. And the game could be | :14:18. | :14:24.
over. If they don't take advantage, when Pisi comes back it is going to | :14:25. | :14:29.
give them a lift. The first ten minutes will tell us a tale of | :14:30. | :14:33.
whether this game will be one comfortable yet or whether it gets | :14:34. | :14:37.
more difficult. That penalty at half-time certainly tips the | :14:38. | :14:40.
advantage towards Ireland in a major way in the fact that Paddy knocked | :14:41. | :14:45.
it true. It will also give him confidence. This next piece, it is | :14:46. | :14:51.
time for a little nostalgia. Exactly 30 years ago, the British and Irish | :14:52. | :14:55.
Lions toured New Zealand. The manager was the great Willie | :14:56. | :15:00.
McBride. The team included a host of Irish players, including David | :15:01. | :15:04.
Owen. He decided to reunite the whole squad for a night of | :15:05. | :15:09.
celebration. And he invited us along to take a look back at some of the | :15:10. | :15:21.
great memories. Great recovery! All the way! | :15:22. | :15:28.
We all made a great effort to get there and they are having a ball. It | :15:29. | :15:34.
is important. It is fantastic playing rugby but the friendships | :15:35. | :15:39.
you make TV more important. -- or even more important. It could have | :15:40. | :15:46.
been 30 days ago, it is like we never parted. There are some guys | :15:47. | :15:51.
here I have not met for 30 years. But it has been handshakes, hogs, | :15:52. | :15:58.
and the conversations have just continued on. -- hugs. | :15:59. | :16:14.
Queen round him. -- clean. I played for the first test and it was the | :16:15. | :16:19.
pinnacle of my rugby career, to represent the British and Irish | :16:20. | :16:22.
Lions, it was fantastic. Going for the first try and getting | :16:23. | :16:28.
it, beautifully done. The guys enjoyed it. A lot came back | :16:29. | :16:33.
much better players and most would agree with that. But it is always | :16:34. | :16:40.
tough to play well in New Zealand. Erwin... Never had a chance. | :16:41. | :16:48.
A lot of people will remember the successful tours, but the 1983 tour | :16:49. | :16:55.
was successful in many ways. They did not win the series but they are | :16:56. | :17:00.
the same effort in as those who won in Australia in the summer. | :17:01. | :17:07.
Paxton, the driving run. Chasing, what a tackle! But the try is given. | :17:08. | :17:17.
Wonderful to see the guys, a privilege to be part of this fine | :17:18. | :17:22.
body of men. Some of the boys, I have not seen for 30 years so it is | :17:23. | :17:25.
fantastic and we are enjoying beers together. | :17:26. | :17:33.
Great to see Campbell, one of my big sporting heroes. When you watch the | :17:34. | :17:39.
old actions, does it surprise you how much rugby has changed? The | :17:40. | :17:44.
physique of the players is the first thing. It has changed dramatically. | :17:45. | :17:55.
I suppose it is a different era. Which is still admire what they | :17:56. | :17:59.
achieved what they went through and they played phenomenal rugby. This | :18:00. | :18:04.
is the start of the Joe Schmidt Iraq, what do Ireland need to do to | :18:05. | :18:09.
close out this game? -- Joe Schmidt era. Performing the basics with pace | :18:10. | :18:16.
and precision and getting possession in opposition territory. They have | :18:17. | :18:19.
not gone through many phases with ball in hand. If they can get | :18:20. | :18:24.
decision into kicking contest for the ball in the air and get | :18:25. | :18:28.
possession in opposition territory to build phases and score tries, | :18:29. | :18:31.
they are clearly dominant at the set piece, they need to use this | :18:32. | :18:36.
platform to accelerate. What would you like to see more of? Controlling | :18:37. | :18:42.
the pace of the game and building field position. You get a feeling if | :18:43. | :18:47.
Ireland can get more schools on the board, Samoa will drop and the game | :18:48. | :18:51.
could be one comfortable in. But the longer we spent in our own half and | :18:52. | :18:57.
have to spend long amounts of time defending and depending on winning | :18:58. | :19:01.
at the breakdown, it could be a long and difficult game. I do not ring we | :19:02. | :19:05.
will lose but we could make it easier for ourselves with more | :19:06. | :19:11.
control -- I do not think. And to cut out the lack of discipline? | :19:12. | :19:17.
Without a primary possession, it is difficult to get possession in | :19:18. | :19:20.
general. Ireland needs discipline at the break down and they need to | :19:21. | :19:26.
exert their game plan proceedings. Thank you. Not a great game so far | :19:27. | :19:30.
but a great atmosphere at the Beaver Stadium. Let's see what Ireland can | :19:31. | :19:36.
produce in the second half. -- the Aviva Stadium. | :19:37. | :19:40.
No changes from the players that left the field at half-time. But the | :19:41. | :19:50.
Samoans are down to 14 men. Their centre. George Pisi is in the | :19:51. | :19:58.
sin-bin. Paddy Jackson gets the second half under way. Taken in by | :19:59. | :20:09.
26 macro, who plays his rugby in Japan. -- Faatiga Lemalu. Well | :20:10. | :20:25.
covered by Ireland and Paddy Jackson. This man has made an | :20:26. | :20:30.
impressive debut for Ireland, Jack McGrath. | :20:31. | :20:34.
Well taken down and well read by Jack Lam to squeeze them towards the | :20:35. | :20:43.
touchline. Rory Best at scrum-half. Shorn of Ryan will be a bit annoyed | :20:44. | :20:50.
that he got brushed off in a tackle before -- Sean O'Brien. And Ireland | :20:51. | :20:56.
were slowed to discover they had no scrum-half and the ball was pinched, | :20:57. | :21:00.
this could be interesting. What a tackle by Tommy Bowe! The referee | :21:01. | :21:13.
says to play on. What a tackle by Tommy Bowe! He took a gamble and he | :21:14. | :21:18.
had to because Ireland were found wanting on the wing. Tommy Bowe | :21:19. | :21:23.
decided to come in early and to wrap up that tackle. And he effectively | :21:24. | :21:29.
forced Samoa to knock-on that ball, so good decision from Tommy Bowe to | :21:30. | :21:37.
come in. A huge cheer. The Samoan right-wing was hit in the back by a | :21:38. | :21:51.
paper line. -- plane. If you had done that at school, you would be a | :21:52. | :21:59.
hero for ever and a day! First scrum of the second half and a free kick | :22:00. | :22:04.
against the Samoans. They did not study the scrum. A lovely pass. A | :22:05. | :22:11.
good sidestep by McFadden. He gets help from Jackson. This is better by | :22:12. | :22:18.
Ireland. That was well done by the Munster skipper. Swallowed up by | :22:19. | :22:25.
Samoa. A great opportunity and he needed somebody closer. Ireland | :22:26. | :22:35.
managed to put in the choke tackle. Peter O'Mahony is quite a talent. | :22:36. | :22:42.
That was a great run. He used McCarthy as his catapult. He used | :22:43. | :22:47.
his own man to catapult forward. A brilliant run and the Irish had a | :22:48. | :22:51.
job to catch up and offer the support needed. If we are looking at | :22:52. | :22:57.
what has happened in the second half, the message seems to have come | :22:58. | :23:02.
from Joe Schmidt that the tempo and the speed of the delivery needs to | :23:03. | :23:08.
be increased, and in particular the back row offering themselves as | :23:09. | :23:12.
runners. Coming on to the ball at pace to tie in the defenders quickly | :23:13. | :23:17.
and released the backline, something we did not seek in the first half. | :23:18. | :23:23.
Samoa still have a man in the sin-bin. Can Ireland capitalise? | :23:24. | :23:31.
Somebody may have said something and they have been marched back ten | :23:32. | :23:37.
metres. Advantage still going to Samoa. It could be a full penalty. | :23:38. | :23:42.
He has marched them back another ten metres. I think somebody said | :23:43. | :23:46.
something to Steve Walsh at half-time because we were looking at | :23:47. | :23:50.
too many resets and we have already had to Pisi kicks. So I think a word | :23:51. | :23:57.
was had in his ear. -- two free kick. -- kicks. It is a free kick | :23:58. | :24:09.
and they have taken the option of the scrummage. Replacement prop | :24:10. | :24:15.
James Johnston came on the early on for the Leicester Tiger player who | :24:16. | :24:23.
went off with a nasty cough injury. -- calf. Ireland were able to put | :24:24. | :24:30.
pressure on the scrummage in the first half. Better scrum by Samoa. | :24:31. | :24:42.
Reduce the width of the park. -- a good use of the width of the park. | :24:43. | :24:45.
Good Irish tackling. That is good work by Ireland and | :24:46. | :25:17.
good work by McGrath again. And I think they have turned that over. A | :25:18. | :25:26.
good switch of direction. A huge amount of space down that far side. | :25:27. | :25:31.
That has bounced awkwardly, a chance for Ireland. Here comes McFadden! | :25:32. | :25:37.
Jamie Heaslip in support. Taken by Brian! He is over! He has scored! -- | :25:38. | :25:50.
O'Brien. That is what the game needed and that is what Ireland is | :25:51. | :25:55.
needed. That came from a brilliant kick by Paddy Jackson, a turnover | :25:56. | :25:59.
ball originally, Samoa ran out of support players. They ran out of | :26:00. | :26:05.
steam. A good turnover by Ireland. Rate work at the break. Rory Best | :26:06. | :26:11.
gets in. -- great work. Quick thinking from Jackson. As he kicked | :26:12. | :26:16.
it down, a piece of brilliance from Brian O'Driscoll, he flicked the | :26:17. | :26:22.
ball between his legs. The Irish team kept it alive and kept it in | :26:23. | :26:27.
field, a quick ball to the centre and Sean O'Brien came onto it with | :26:28. | :26:31.
nobody in front and he was never going to be stopped. Great strength. | :26:32. | :26:38.
You can tell by the mod on Paddy Jackson that he put his head where | :26:39. | :26:45.
people would not put their feet. -- mud. And he rounds it off and | :26:46. | :26:52.
Ireland are more comfortable. That was the kick, and only Brian | :26:53. | :26:58.
O'Driscoll would think of doing that. Look at the determination of | :26:59. | :27:04.
Sean O'Brien. It really was the quick thinking of Paddy Jackson. | :27:05. | :27:09.
With a turnover ball, coaches often say, move it along the line. Jackson | :27:10. | :27:13.
saw the space behind, they got fortunate with the bounds, but | :27:14. | :27:17.
clever thinking. -- bounce. Samoa still down to 14 men and you | :27:18. | :27:34.
need to be scoring at least six, ten points if the opposition are | :27:35. | :27:39.
short-handed. That is not a good pass and it puts pressure on. Tiny | :27:40. | :27:44.
-- Tommy Bowe. He has been outstanding, this player, for Samoa. | :27:45. | :27:56.
He plays his club rugby in France. Second row, 26 macro. -- Faatiga | :27:57. | :28:10.
Lemalu. That was good technique by McGrath. A good job of placing. And | :28:11. | :28:19.
it is going to be an Irish scrum. It is amazing what a try does to lift | :28:20. | :28:24.
the atmosphere. The supporters were waiting for something like that. The | :28:25. | :28:31.
Samoans are now forcing everything. They feel they have to run from | :28:32. | :28:36.
everywhere, there is little pattern, they are not going through phases. | :28:37. | :28:41.
The green jerseys are able to line out and to wait. They can organise | :28:42. | :28:45.
their defence and they can come forward. And because they are coming | :28:46. | :28:50.
forward in numbers and in a straight line, it is forcing mistakes from | :28:51. | :28:55.
Samoa. I think we will see more of that as Samoa start to tyre out and | :28:56. | :29:02.
Ireland will get the ascendancy. -- to tyre. | :29:03. | :29:11.
Murray again, it for by O'Mahony. Lovely hands by the Munster skipper. | :29:12. | :29:32.
-- that was beautiful by O'Mahony. And he gives the penalty away. The | :29:33. | :29:38.
referee is saying, number six. He has been consistent, Steve Walsh, he | :29:39. | :29:44.
gave penalties earlier in the game for losing his footing at the | :29:45. | :29:48.
crucial moment, and a penalty has been given to the Samoans. | :29:49. | :29:57.
They have conceded ten points since George Pisi was in the sin-bin. The | :29:58. | :30:11.
importance of having discipline. From a needless tackle when the pass | :30:12. | :30:18.
had been made and wasn't going to affect the play. | :30:19. | :30:30.
There are going to be a number of replacements made. The number 24 is | :30:31. | :30:41.
coming on. I have no idea who number 24 is! It is a Tekori. He was played | :30:42. | :30:52.
here three years ago. The Samoans penalised, their | :30:53. | :31:24.
left-wing, Brando Vaalu. They've got to slow the Irish ball down. If | :31:25. | :31:27.
Ireland get quick ball, they're going to be caught out. We've seen | :31:28. | :31:34.
great movement in the Irish back. Probably could've done with McFadden | :31:35. | :31:39.
coming inside to create that space and get away from the touchline but | :31:40. | :31:43.
the Samoans are getting in at the break and they are trying to slow | :31:44. | :31:47.
the ball down. They are giving more and more penalties away as the game | :31:48. | :31:56.
progresses. No sign of any Irish replacements in the second half. Two | :31:57. | :32:00.
pretty tough games coming up for Ireland. The Australians in a weeks | :32:01. | :32:07.
time, and then New Zealand in a fortnight. | :32:08. | :32:15.
Ireland haven't got the momentum for another try. Samoa are threatening | :32:16. | :32:21.
to come in from an outside possession. | :32:22. | :33:07.
Ireland are being patient. And giving away the penalty. And, again, | :33:08. | :33:18.
just going in off their feet. Mike McCarthy was guilty of that. At the | :33:19. | :33:23.
time when they need to have composure, keep the ball, they are | :33:24. | :33:27.
in the ascendancy. Watching the backline, they are moving along, | :33:28. | :33:30.
switching players, and although it looks good, they are not making much | :33:31. | :33:36.
ground. There are defensive pair is waiting for them. I don't know. | :33:37. | :33:40.
Maybe the players need to becoming a little bit deeper and trying to cut | :33:41. | :33:45.
back the line. Somebody like apartment Mac coming from a blind | :33:46. | :33:49.
position, cutting the angle back would serve better than switches in | :33:50. | :33:54.
that outside channel. -- someone like Kearney. | :33:55. | :34:03.
I'm glad that is O'Mahony and not me! That looks very sore. I wonder | :34:04. | :34:13.
if he has broken his nose. Probably not for the first time. He has | :34:14. | :34:20.
probably inflicted the same thing on one or two people. The clock has | :34:21. | :34:25.
stopped with 13 minutes gone in the second half. Ireland were 40-6 up at | :34:26. | :34:37.
the interval. -- 14-6. There is a raw in the throats of the Irish | :34:38. | :34:45.
supporters. One of the modern greats of Irish rugby is about to come on | :34:46. | :34:51.
after a break of 18 months. He has had an unfortunate couple of years, | :34:52. | :34:58.
lots of injury for O'Connell. Here he comes, and what a warm welcome | :34:59. | :35:07.
for Paul O'Connell. They are giving O'Mahony every opportunity to come | :35:08. | :35:09.
in to the game when he can. McCarthy has played in the back row | :35:10. | :35:17.
down the years. Much more lively stuff from the men | :35:18. | :35:49.
in blue. 15 points adrift, that could all change. Great turnover by | :35:50. | :35:52.
Ireland. There will be a lot of sore Irish | :35:53. | :36:20.
bodies tonight. Some of these tackles are immense. | :36:21. | :36:47.
The pass was judged to have gone forward to Rory Best, just when he | :36:48. | :36:56.
had done brilliantly to juggle it. He gets in there, gets his hands on | :36:57. | :37:01.
the ball, turns it over. Again, I think it was Paulo who came in for | :37:02. | :37:08.
the Samoans. He just tried to play it out into the contact area. Again, | :37:09. | :37:18.
it was good work from Devin Toner to get the ball back for Ireland. Now | :37:19. | :37:24.
the Samoans have got the ball back from that forward pass, but it was a | :37:25. | :37:32.
tough call. They have got all their backs here and also a back row | :37:33. | :37:36.
forward, they have got Jack Lam lurking. If they go around that, I | :37:37. | :37:46.
would be very surprised. Can they make this extra man work? No, they | :37:47. | :37:52.
can't. That collision looked nasty. The referee has blown the whistle | :37:53. | :37:57.
straight away. No foul play, head-on head collision. Lots of blood there | :37:58. | :38:05.
already. It was accidental, but it was Vaalu who flew in. One of them | :38:06. | :38:12.
was his own man. One of the Irish defenders as well. Oh, yes. It was | :38:13. | :38:20.
Pisi, got smashed in the face by his own player. Vaalu got a nasty one to | :38:21. | :38:29.
the side of the head. They got a thumping. It was accidental, they | :38:30. | :38:40.
were both coming in at an angle. As Pisi gave the ball, he got a shunt | :38:41. | :38:46.
from the Irish defender, and catapulted him into his own player. | :38:47. | :38:51.
Not nice to see these stretch is coming on and to see all that blood. | :38:52. | :38:57.
Absolutely not. It's been a tough game, as we'd expect. The Samoans | :38:58. | :39:03.
have had a mixed physical, but this is unfortunate. They will be losing | :39:04. | :39:11.
two players. It's not just a single impact, it is a double impact, | :39:12. | :39:14.
because both of them are very slow to get to the ground. Pisi, their | :39:15. | :39:22.
main playmaker, that would be a huge loss. They are going to bring on | :39:23. | :39:27.
Jeremy Su'a, a scrum-half. The worrying thing is that Pisi | :39:28. | :39:46.
seems to be out cold. Sporting a brand-new goatee beard, the | :39:47. | :39:59.
formidable Cain Healy. The bounce to the ball was awkward. Slippery | :40:00. | :40:10.
surface, the undoing of the Samoan. From that range, a brick wall was | :40:11. | :40:15.
not going to stop Sean O'Brien. You see the speed. Heaslip got over it | :40:16. | :40:26.
quickly, perfect ball from Murray, flicked it away, and Sean O'Brien | :40:27. | :40:34.
brought it in. Well, we can see that Tusi Pisi is up on his feet again. | :40:35. | :40:45.
Hello, everybody, back in Samoa. He certainly looks groggy. We are more | :40:46. | :40:49.
concerned for his colleague who's going to require a stretcher to | :40:50. | :40:56.
remove him from the field. So Jeremy Su'a will be coming on and Fautua | :40:57. | :41:06.
Otto will be coming on. Su'a is with Worcester, Otto is with Bristol. | :41:07. | :41:11.
There is a buzz all of the ground. When you have a one-man advantage, | :41:12. | :41:15.
you need to press it home, and Ireland got the penalty just before | :41:16. | :41:21.
half-time, and then Sean O'Brien got that try. Joe Schmidt will be | :41:22. | :41:25.
looking for more from this side. I think there could be some changes | :41:26. | :41:29.
made on the 60 minute mark. We will see him playing some other players | :41:30. | :41:35.
from the bench. But it has been a bit of a stop start affair, not | :41:36. | :41:39.
great continuity to the match, which is affecting the team, the Irish | :41:40. | :41:44.
team, they can't get into their patterns. The scrums were messy in | :41:45. | :41:50.
the first half we were looking at recess. There is no doubt that as | :41:51. | :41:54.
you are trying to bring in new patterns, it's important there is a | :41:55. | :41:59.
flow to the game, and that there is a continuity, and that there are | :42:00. | :42:06.
off-loads. It is a perfect day for rugby, but it hasn't come into the | :42:07. | :42:09.
type of game that the Irish would have wanted and it has affected | :42:10. | :42:13.
them. Again, we are seeing stoppages and play. Every time they get | :42:14. | :42:18.
momentum, it breaks down and stops again. A frustrating day for Joe | :42:19. | :42:24.
Schmidt, and he is wondering how exactly you can get that level of | :42:25. | :42:29.
continuity back. Ireland have got a number of players waiting to come | :42:30. | :42:34.
on. Declan Fitzpatrick is down below us, and number 21 is Airedale Air | :42:35. | :42:38.
Conditioning. A very generous round of applause | :42:39. | :43:05.
for the Samoan players injured in that clash. It is a long way from | :43:06. | :43:27.
the canvas stretcher carried on by two men. Player safety is everything | :43:28. | :43:32.
these days, and they are so well looked after. But it is a very sad | :43:33. | :43:38.
sight seeing a player go off. It's the last thing you want to see, the | :43:39. | :43:44.
sight of that medical card. The skipper is going to have to | :43:45. | :43:52.
readjust. Fotuali'i has gone to the outside half position. | :43:53. | :44:08.
Su'a is the replacement hooker. Su'a, good work from him. | :44:09. | :44:47.
Johnson into Mike Ross. Devin Toner hangs onto him. Nicely presented | :44:48. | :44:57.
either Samoans but Ireland have slowed it down, aggressive I Jack | :44:58. | :45:05.
Lam. Tackled by Jack McGrath. Good work by Jamie Heaslip. Kahn | :45:06. | :45:10.
Fotuali'i. There was an overlap but they brought it into the middle of | :45:11. | :45:16.
the park. Kahn Fotuali'i, that has come loose. A good tackle by Conor | :45:17. | :45:23.
Murray. The referee has played on, no knock forward. | :45:24. | :45:34.
Samoa are trying all sorts but nothing is coming together. This is | :45:35. | :45:42.
the enormous Johnstone. And they get the penalty. Good piece of | :45:43. | :45:51.
continuity by the Samoans. But a needless penalty by Ireland. It was | :45:52. | :45:55.
a penalty, you could see the hand of Jamie Heaslip. He came in on the | :45:56. | :45:59.
side of the tackle and it was in the long enough to delay the ball, there | :46:00. | :46:05.
was no need. There was no threat, the defensive line is organised for | :46:06. | :46:11.
Ireland. They would be happy to let the Samoans have the ball and stiff | :46:12. | :46:13.
and defend the corner but now they are under Russia with a line-out for | :46:14. | :46:16.
Samoa -- under pressure. Cian Healy I can see down below. You | :46:17. | :46:32.
wonder if Peter Mahoney -- Peter O'Mahony has come off and will come | :46:33. | :46:38.
back on again. Jack Lam tidies up with a good forward tried by | :46:39. | :46:43.
Ireland. A good piece of different -- aggressive defending. Paolo, the | :46:44. | :46:55.
tackle by Mike Ross. Isaia Tuifua. Ireland have stolen that, Rory Best | :46:56. | :47:00.
in a game, he is the master of that. And D'arcy. A quicker ball, well | :47:01. | :47:18.
away. McFadden. Disappointing. That was nearly away. Another great deal | :47:19. | :47:24.
by Rory Best, that is three, possibly four he has been a part of | :47:25. | :47:29.
and created the opportunity for Paddy Jackson. They got fortunate | :47:30. | :47:35.
with a bounce before. For the try that Sean O'Brien got. The bench has | :47:36. | :47:42.
unloaded and everybody is coming on. Mike Ross, Conor Murray is coming | :47:43. | :47:50.
off. Tommy Bowe has gone off. Jack McGrath, who has had a splendid | :47:51. | :47:56.
debut, has come off. McCarthy has come off the field. Peter O'Mahony | :47:57. | :48:07.
is back on the field. Untidy by Ireland at the outset but well Paul | :48:08. | :48:13.
Den by Declan Fitzpatrick. -- called in. -- pulled. That was given just | :48:14. | :48:28.
about the right amount of weight. Waiting for advantage and non-will | :48:29. | :48:32.
come for the Samoans. The men in blue will get a foot in the scrum. | :48:33. | :48:44.
And who wearing green has come on? That is Eoin Reddan. That will be | :48:45. | :48:49.
the difference between these sides, the quality Ireland have on the | :48:50. | :48:53.
bench to bring on. They certainly have strength and depth on the bench | :48:54. | :49:00.
and that will be the difference in the last 20 minutes. They will bring | :49:01. | :49:05.
a freshness and real contribution to this team and up the tempo. And I | :49:06. | :49:10.
think we might see some different style of play from the Irish. Chris | :49:11. | :49:18.
Henry has a hamstring injury. I hope it is not a tear. We do not know how | :49:19. | :49:27.
serious the Samoan scrum is. Has he overcooked that? Straight into | :49:28. | :49:32.
touch, very unfortunate and disappointing for him and his side. | :49:33. | :49:38.
Now you can really seep Paul O'Connor and Brian O'Driscoll came | :49:39. | :49:49.
in. -- see. There was real purpose about getting something organised. | :49:50. | :49:54.
They could try to move it out to the backline. Definitely some strong | :49:55. | :50:00.
words throughout the team. A knock-on from Gordon D'Arcy, | :50:01. | :50:04.
unfortunately. Referee is still playing advantage to the Samoans. | :50:05. | :50:11.
Dave Carney, wearing 23, has come on for his first cap. This is opening | :50:12. | :50:17.
up a bit and the more loose this is, the more it will suit the Samoans. | :50:18. | :50:24.
Great strength by the dreadlocked replacement. An opening tackle by | :50:25. | :50:32.
Isaia Tuifua. The referee had a hand-out for the penalty. Here come | :50:33. | :50:51.
the Samoans. Jeremy C A sit on. -- Jeremy Su'a. The penalty has been | :50:52. | :50:58.
given against Ireland. Great credit to the Samoans. That man has been so | :50:59. | :51:05.
ambitious all day. He has tried things. A good break from him. You | :51:06. | :51:12.
have to give the Samoans credit. They have come here to play, they | :51:13. | :51:17.
are having a go. Ireland will be so disappointed. They got into a | :51:18. | :51:21.
position to put pressure on the Samoans, they had a line-out, the | :51:22. | :51:27.
back row rocked of the line-out. -- dropped off. The past to D'arcy was | :51:28. | :51:35.
so low that he not get on and the whole thing broke down. -- he | :51:36. | :51:41.
knocked it on. Those mistakes are too common from Ireland. Kahn | :51:42. | :51:47.
Fotuali'i, in the absence of his partner, has stepped up to the kick | :51:48. | :51:54.
for goal. Still about 16 minutes of this game | :51:55. | :52:05.
remaining. The Samoans might be looking for a successful kick to | :52:06. | :52:10.
provide a chip with the back foot. It is just about perfect! 21-9 in | :52:11. | :52:19.
Ireland's favour. The Samoans have something to cheer about in the | :52:20. | :52:23.
second half. And with a number of replacements, the Samoans have had | :52:24. | :52:28.
to make a couple as well as they lost two men because of a nasty | :52:29. | :52:34.
midfield collision. Paddy Jackson to get this game underway again. That | :52:35. | :52:40.
was not forward. The ball has come loose. The referee is playing | :52:41. | :52:45.
advantage to Ireland. And Ireland will get the scrum. A good kick by | :52:46. | :52:51.
Jackson, he has played well today. Everything he has been asked to do, | :52:52. | :52:57.
he has done perfectly. He has kicked well, except that one that hit the | :52:58. | :53:01.
post. He can be happy with his performance so far. Ireland have to | :53:02. | :53:06.
think about this. The set piece, they did not concentrate and they | :53:07. | :53:10.
messed it up. The scrum has been dominant all day, perfect position, | :53:11. | :53:16.
we must see some decent first phase attack ball from this. It is an | :53:17. | :53:22.
Irish forward pack with five British and Irish Lions on the most recent | :53:23. | :53:26.
tour in it so they should be pretty comfortable at this. That is a good | :53:27. | :53:34.
scrum. Got the back nice and parallel. McFadden, a good angle. | :53:35. | :53:41.
Inside to D'arcy, this is better. D'arcy is still going. Good support | :53:42. | :53:47.
from Sean O'Brien. Ireland within touching distance of the line. Cian | :53:48. | :53:53.
Healy. Good presentation, eight Whickham ball. -- a quicker ball. | :53:54. | :54:02.
Carney! It is pretty close! What a moment for the Carney family! The | :54:03. | :54:08.
53rd set of brothers to play for Ireland. And Dave might just have | :54:09. | :54:13.
marked his debut with a try in the corner. There is no doubt | :54:14. | :54:17.
whatsoever, he definitely got over and got the touchdown before anybody | :54:18. | :54:23.
was anywhere near the touchline. We can see it again. No question | :54:24. | :54:29.
whatsoever. A great try and a brilliant pass from his brother. You | :54:30. | :54:36.
will have two wonder afterwards when they are having a chat if that was | :54:37. | :54:40.
deliberate! -- you have to wonder. Williams skills. Winning your first | :54:41. | :54:50.
cap is always extremely special. -- valiant skills. Scoring a try is the | :54:51. | :54:54.
icing on the cake and Dave Carney gets his first Irish try on the | :54:55. | :55:00.
occasion of his first Irish cap and he can hardly contain himself. He is | :55:01. | :55:04.
delighted and like -- and rightly so. It was inevitable, it came from | :55:05. | :55:10.
a solid set piece. Jamie Heaslip got the ball away, a great run by | :55:11. | :55:14.
McFadden. Changed direction and a brilliant off-load to D'arcy who | :55:15. | :55:19.
they could not tackle. He kept going. He was able to set it up and | :55:20. | :55:25.
Paddy Jackson provided another great conversion. Great continuity from | :55:26. | :55:31.
Ireland to set that try up. And McFadden is in the middle of it. | :55:32. | :55:36.
D'arcy showed immense strength and great footwork and when the ball was | :55:37. | :55:42.
released... The dancing was perfect and the finish was exquisite! And a | :55:43. | :55:52.
first Irish try for Dave Carney in his first Irish appearance. We still | :55:53. | :56:04.
have about 13 minutes remaining. The Samoans will not hold back, I am | :56:05. | :56:11.
sure. Well taken by Devin Toner. Eoin Reddan. Rob Carney. That was | :56:12. | :56:17.
well gathered by Kahn Fotuali'i. That was well set up by Samoa. Cian | :56:18. | :56:51.
Healy with the tackle. Paulo divides the cover. He slipped up a big bump. | :56:52. | :57:00.
But he has made it available and this is a good chance. | :57:01. | :57:10.
Bounces off four defenders. The momentum is with Ireland. That was | :57:11. | :57:19.
not offside. This is Dave Carney, is he going to get two on his debut? A | :57:20. | :57:26.
breeze is starting to pick up and the crowd getting excited. Rory | :57:27. | :57:31.
Best, who has had another wonderful day, on the ground. Cleverly done by | :57:32. | :57:40.
O'Driscoll. Cleared by the Samoans. That will be an Irish line-out, and | :57:41. | :57:48.
a very good position. Jamie Heaslip picking himself up slowly after that | :57:49. | :57:52.
challenge. I did not think any arms were used in that tackle when they | :57:53. | :57:58.
went in on that which Jamie Heaslip and he certainly seemed to get | :57:59. | :58:05.
smashed in that tackle. -- with Jamie Heaslip. | :58:06. | :58:24.
Another Samoan is down at this stage. Paul O'Connell was named at | :58:25. | :58:35.
captain even though Jamie Heaslip is captain, what do you make of that? | :58:36. | :58:40.
Paul O'Connell was coming back from injury so the right decision was to | :58:41. | :58:43.
put him on the bench and let him find himself into the game. They | :58:44. | :58:48.
need him to get gametime with Australia and New Zealand, got. I do | :58:49. | :58:53.
not think there is major issues with that. -- and New Zealand coming up. | :58:54. | :59:01.
Well taken at the back by Jamie Heaslip. Rory Best to his old friend | :59:02. | :59:15.
Cian Healy. Beautifully done between the two Leinster man. Nice switch. | :59:16. | :59:22.
The Samoans are offside and the referee is playing advantage to | :59:23. | :59:25.
Ireland. They will looking for a fourth try. And the little brother | :59:26. | :59:33.
will not thank him for that pass! Having thanked him a lot for the | :59:34. | :59:37.
first, but they have to come back for a penalty. And Ireland may think | :59:38. | :59:41.
about the scrum beside the post at the three points on offer. Dave | :59:42. | :59:50.
Carney, a grin on the face. Not far away because of the pressure coming | :59:51. | :59:58.
on Carney. Rob Carney, because of the pressure, he had to get the past | :59:59. | :00:02.
away quickly and he went slightly forward as it made its way to his | :00:03. | :00:04.
brother David. So, Rory Best has come off the | :00:05. | :00:20.
field. Brian O'Driscoll has come off the field. That was his 155th cap. | :00:21. | :00:31.
One more, he will be level with the Ronan O'Gara. | :00:32. | :00:40.
So, Madigan comes on, Sean Cronin as well. They have taken Brian off to | :00:41. | :00:55.
make sure... He hasn't had a lot of game time coming into this game, so | :00:56. | :01:00.
asking him to play the whole game would have been too much. He needs | :01:01. | :01:06.
to be ready for next week. I am sure he would have lasted another ten | :01:07. | :01:09.
minutes. Ireland have gone for the option of the scrummage directly in | :01:10. | :01:15.
front of the Samoan post. A solid looking scrum. | :01:16. | :01:25.
Oh, it is going to be a trifle McFadden! Island's fourth of the | :01:26. | :01:42.
afternoon. A great try. And McFadden gets over for a try. He deserves it. | :01:43. | :01:47.
He has been very industrious tonight. I thought it was given to | :01:48. | :01:53.
early, the pass, but it was brilliant. The defence had to check | :01:54. | :01:59.
him, and because they had to check, he was able to off-load. The way he | :02:00. | :02:04.
steps, that brings the winner in because they are worried about | :02:05. | :02:10.
D'Arcy, which releases space for McFadden and he gets his just reward | :02:11. | :02:13.
because he has been very industrious. D'Arcy has had a very | :02:14. | :02:22.
great second half. He has committed it all in the second half. He has | :02:23. | :02:26.
played a role in a number of the Irish tries. Oh, he has done it | :02:27. | :02:39.
again. Well, 15 points the Paddy Jackson this afternoon, he has only | :02:40. | :02:46.
missed one click. That was a fine finish by McFadden. Paddy Jackson | :02:47. | :02:58.
has put Ireland in a good position today. He looks happy, he is happy | :02:59. | :03:02.
with the players around him, and he has given a good quality | :03:03. | :03:07.
performance. And he is only 21, don't you hate him? | :03:08. | :03:16.
Interesting to see if the foot wasn't in touch. I wonder who would | :03:17. | :03:32.
have been looking to try to get some support and off-load. | :03:33. | :04:08.
That was an interesting kick, but it might work. Dave Kearney, thinking | :04:09. | :04:20.
about the first try, doing some juggling fare. Six and a half | :04:21. | :04:24.
minutes remaining, Samoa will be happy about the second half. -- | :04:25. | :04:32.
Samoa will not be happy. The game has certainly changed. We've got to | :04:33. | :04:36.
give credit to Samoa. They were affected badly before this match | :04:37. | :04:39.
with five of their front starting players unable to play which is a | :04:40. | :04:44.
big disappointment for them. They had targeted this game as the one | :04:45. | :04:48.
they wanted to put-in a big performance for, it being the only | :04:49. | :04:53.
frontier team they are up against on this tour. They wanted to target | :04:54. | :04:57.
them and have a go. Injuries prior to the match and during the game, it | :04:58. | :05:07.
has affected their game badly. It was out of their control, really. | :05:08. | :05:23.
Good work off the back by the Samoans. They couldn't get a | :05:24. | :05:40.
regulation shirt to fit Joe Tekori, so they have had to get an enormous | :05:41. | :05:42.
one. Can Ireland create something from | :05:43. | :06:15.
this? He very nearly got to it! I think he | :06:16. | :06:41.
torched it -- touched it. It is a Samoan line-up. He was so close. | :06:42. | :06:47.
McFadden does this so well. He is not the biggest guy in the world, | :06:48. | :06:51.
but he never gives up, always compute. He just got his fingertips | :06:52. | :07:00.
to that. I think he has done very well today, McFadden, he has been | :07:01. | :07:05.
very industrious, getting himself involved. Out in the win, you can | :07:06. | :07:09.
wait all day and not see the ball, but he has gone searching for it. | :07:10. | :07:16.
Ireland have some versatile players who can adapt to the winner. | :07:17. | :07:27.
That was not the cleverest things that Kearney has ever done. | :07:28. | :08:01.
Good defence by Ireland, Samoa looking for the late try just to | :08:02. | :08:06.
take the bad luck of the thing. They haven't played badly at all. But | :08:07. | :08:08.
injuries haven't helped them. Ireland's defence looking pretty | :08:09. | :08:43.
solid. Now, they've turned it over. Here comes Madigan. He is still | :08:44. | :08:45.
going! Reddan gets it, here is Kearney. The | :08:46. | :09:02.
brothers give it to each other. Reddan checks. He's done it again. A | :09:03. | :09:08.
second try for Kearney. Can you believe it? Two tries on a debut? | :09:09. | :09:15.
They might be checking upstairs to make sure there was no forward | :09:16. | :09:22.
passing. But it has been given. Great combinations there. I thought | :09:23. | :09:27.
that Madigan may have released earlier. But great support played by | :09:28. | :09:40.
pretty much all the backline. And Kearney was there at the crucial | :09:41. | :09:48.
moment. Two tries! There was a danger they had overcooked the whole | :09:49. | :09:54.
thing. It was looking as if it was easy to score, and then they were | :09:55. | :10:00.
making a meal of it. But that was a great try. The referee was pretty | :10:01. | :10:04.
happy, his touch judge was pretty happy. And I am sure that Dave | :10:05. | :10:11.
Kearney is pretty ecstatic, too. It all came from a turnover ball in | :10:12. | :10:18.
their own half. Paddy Jackson has managed to miss. Here it is again, | :10:19. | :10:28.
great interplay. Nice little checks, plenty of support. And there is | :10:29. | :10:36.
Kearney, and what a debut for him. Reddan did very well. The defence | :10:37. | :10:41.
had come over to cover him. A lot of players would have been bundled into | :10:42. | :10:45.
touch, but he took the step, handed off the player, had the composure to | :10:46. | :10:52.
wait, and then gave the past. -- the past. | :10:53. | :11:00.
Sean O'Brien showing plenty of Bothell, but it is going forward. | :11:01. | :11:11.
The 80 minutes are up. I'd be surprised if you'd doesn't blow the | :11:12. | :11:14.
whistle to signal the end of the game. He's not going to surprise me | :11:15. | :11:21.
at all, it has been a great day for casual tea-mac, but an even better | :11:22. | :11:26.
day for Dave Kearney. -- Jack McGrath. | :11:27. | :11:31.
This has been a splendid debut for Dave Kearney, the man who scored the | :11:32. | :11:43.
first try, O'Mahony, played in the first half. Tries from Sean | :11:44. | :11:54.
O'Brien, two from Kearney. It wasn't perfect, there were mistakes. | :11:55. | :11:59.
Overall, a good result, eight half game to get out of the way and a | :12:00. | :12:00.
good start. -- a tough game. Well, a comfortable win for island | :12:01. | :12:14.
in the end but no doubt the new coach Joe Schmidt to will have | :12:15. | :12:22.
plenty to dissect. O'Mahony got island in the lead in the first half | :12:23. | :12:26.
with a try, but then it got better from Brian O'Driscoll, Sean O'Brien | :12:27. | :12:33.
with a touchdown, Dave Kearney with two tries, and McFadden also with a | :12:34. | :12:45.
try. Eddie, give us your assessment of Joe Schmidt's first game in | :12:46. | :12:49.
charge. They got the job done in the end. They took advantage of the | :12:50. | :12:55.
start of the second half. Once they got control of the game, the Samoans | :12:56. | :13:01.
struggled. Then they took full advantage. And you can't argue with | :13:02. | :13:05.
the scoreline. The executed very well in the end. They took full | :13:06. | :13:09.
advantage of the opportunities they got. You can't argue with the | :13:10. | :13:15.
scoreline, but for the first 60 minutes, Ireland were put to Gilly | :13:16. | :13:19.
do is appointing and frustrating to watch. That is interest -- | :13:20. | :13:24.
international rugby. You will be confronted physically with Samoa, | :13:25. | :13:29.
they had complete dominance at the set piece, at the breakdown, and in | :13:30. | :13:33.
the last 20 minutes, they got the fruits of their endeavours. Their | :13:34. | :13:38.
kicking game improved, they had possession, and there were some | :13:39. | :13:44.
clinical finishes. Some hard work done in that first 40-60 minutes but | :13:45. | :13:48.
once they tweaked a few things in terms of their kicking, that | :13:49. | :13:54.
dominance they had started to tell. That clinical finishing, one of the | :13:55. | :13:58.
big positives in that second half. It was a change of tactics in the | :13:59. | :14:02.
second half which paid off. We didn't kick the ball as much, and | :14:03. | :14:05.
when we did, it was much more strategic. So, we didn't create the | :14:06. | :14:13.
opportunities that Samoa did in the first half, and even, that said, | :14:14. | :14:19.
Samoa did tried to run more possession, but Samoa couldn't hold | :14:20. | :14:23.
on to the ball in the breakdown which led to all sorts of trouble. | :14:24. | :14:26.
If you're going to run with the ball, you should hold onto it. | :14:27. | :14:30.
Ireland really punished them. Some of the scores came from turnovers, | :14:31. | :14:36.
from Ireland being destructive turning the ball over, and using it | :14:37. | :14:40.
effectively and efficiently and accurately, to put the knife in. | :14:41. | :14:43.
Let's take a look at some those tries. It was some great play from | :14:44. | :14:53.
Sean O'Brien. It felt like we were waiting for Ireland to get an | :14:54. | :14:57.
opportunity. This turnover, you can see that choke tackle, and then Rory | :14:58. | :15:04.
Best gets the ball. Some clever decisions after that. The kicking, | :15:05. | :15:08.
which we have said was a feature that needed improvement, they were | :15:09. | :15:12.
finding space, it was a fortuitous bounce. And then it is good | :15:13. | :15:16.
decisions from there and composure. Keeping the ball in hand, making the | :15:17. | :15:21.
right decisions. And then, against the retreating defence, a very good | :15:22. | :15:27.
line taken. It is very difficult then defensively to get your men in | :15:28. | :15:31.
position and identify the strike runners, and it all comes from this | :15:32. | :15:38.
turnover. That was superb from we best. Every breakdown. He must have | :15:39. | :15:46.
picked it up four or five turnovers, putting your body on the line. He | :15:47. | :15:50.
gets a pounding but he just gets on with it. That was a big factor in | :15:51. | :15:55.
Ireland's dominance in the second half. The Fed of what they achieved | :15:56. | :16:01.
in the first half and they fed off the Samoans. Let's hear from the man | :16:02. | :16:09.
of the match. It's easy, this international rugby | :16:10. | :16:15.
walk! We played well and the substitutes | :16:16. | :16:19.
did well when they came on. From the start, you seemed on top. We worked | :16:20. | :16:24.
hard during the week and we set out a plan we wanted and it came off | :16:25. | :16:30.
quite well. What did Joe Schmidt say at half-time? It was tight. They are | :16:31. | :16:35.
dynamic boys, we have to keep grinding them down. They are tough | :16:36. | :16:41.
and we have two keep at the 60 minute -- have to keep at them for | :16:42. | :16:48.
60 minutes. How did you find the atmosphere on the occasion? | :16:49. | :16:51.
Brilliant, the atmosphere was savage! People in their seats, that | :16:52. | :16:56.
is what you want. It is a great honour to represent Ireland, | :16:57. | :17:01.
especially in front of a packed crowd. Massive week is coming up, | :17:02. | :17:05.
have you given Joe something to think about? -- a massive week. All | :17:06. | :17:12.
I can do is my best and it is up to him. I am happy to play any role. | :17:13. | :17:16.
Congratulations. Jack McGrath, man of the match, on | :17:17. | :17:23.
his debut. And the scrums were a big speech and Ireland had the upper | :17:24. | :17:30.
hand. Samoa were not comfortable and they were in big trouble in the | :17:31. | :17:36.
first half. You have got to see what they will give you and they are -- | :17:37. | :17:44.
and it was obvious early in the game Samoa were in trouble. But Ireland | :17:45. | :17:49.
kept the scrum Square and this is a feature of watch Joe Schmidt likes, | :17:50. | :17:53.
set piece defence and -- set piece possession when you have a lot of | :17:54. | :17:57.
peace to attack. That is what we want to see and we saw it | :17:58. | :18:00.
particularly in the second half with the possession. Is not a bad debut | :18:01. | :18:07.
for Dave Carney! That is what you want for your windows, set up by | :18:08. | :18:12.
clinical work in the inside work -- windows. -- wingers. Ireland moving | :18:13. | :18:24.
forward. We see a defence of line that is retreating once again. And | :18:25. | :18:27.
good decisions are made. Identifying the space, good work in the contact | :18:28. | :18:34.
areas, and speed of recycling creates the overlap. Brother to | :18:35. | :18:40.
brother, pretty nice. The origin of that came from the scrum, a set | :18:41. | :18:46.
piece. And the incision of the first strike did the damage and Samoa | :18:47. | :18:51.
could not recover from that. It is not just the finishing by Dave | :18:52. | :18:55.
Carney, it is the turn of the first and the great build-up play to the | :18:56. | :18:58.
try which Joe Schmidt will be happy about. Yes, this is probably Samoa's | :18:59. | :19:06.
best rugby of the game. They held onto the ball for many phases but | :19:07. | :19:11.
Ireland held their shape and Samoa could not hold onto the ball. That | :19:12. | :19:15.
is a turnover. When Ireland get it, it is one pass and we are into the | :19:16. | :19:22.
back straightaway. When that line break happens, it is hard to | :19:23. | :19:27.
recover. New Zealand, they gauge their game on that, at the breakdown | :19:28. | :19:33.
and able to move forward like this. You have to win that breakdown | :19:34. | :19:37.
battle to win his opportunities. What New Zealand have been good at | :19:38. | :19:42.
is performing the basics better than anyone else, they then create | :19:43. | :19:46.
opportunities. But once they create opportunities, they have the skill | :19:47. | :19:50.
set and decision-making to finish them off and get points on the | :19:51. | :19:53.
board, that is what islands did in the last 20 minutes. Created | :19:54. | :19:59.
opportunities and finished them off. Like McFadden, great execution. You | :20:00. | :20:07.
could go left or right, a slight decoy run to the right, then he goes | :20:08. | :20:13.
left. And Samoa scrabbling, it is three players on two. Samoa panicked | :20:14. | :20:20.
a bit. It is an easy run in the end. In the build-up to the game, the | :20:21. | :20:26.
coach came under criticism for his selection of D'arcy in the centre, | :20:27. | :20:32.
but he had a good game today. He did very well, started at three on two | :20:33. | :20:35.
and they drifted initially, but D'arcy was able to draw two | :20:36. | :20:41.
defenders and that created space on the outside. He has the feet and the | :20:42. | :20:44.
experience, a good off-load. When defensive players are under pressure | :20:45. | :20:49.
in a retreat, they have to make quick decisions and often as we have | :20:50. | :20:54.
seen get them wrong. But it is the pressure created by the continuity | :20:55. | :20:58.
and speed of recycling that puts them in the defensive position. We | :20:59. | :21:02.
can get more reaction from Jamie Heaslip. | :21:03. | :21:10.
As expected, it was brutal, what is your assessment? | :21:11. | :21:15.
As a squad, we took a small step in the right direction. We can take a | :21:16. | :21:20.
what more steps but we laid good foundations. -- a what more steps. | :21:21. | :21:31.
Two players got their caps. It is boyhood dreams come true. A proud | :21:32. | :21:42.
moment to lead two boys out but we have a lot to work on. We are chest | :21:43. | :21:46.
heavy in tackles and we have to work on that. The set piece was good. We | :21:47. | :21:54.
launched a lot from the scrum and line-out and we have to try from one | :21:55. | :21:57.
of the line-outs and the scrums, so that is a bonus. We will have a lot | :21:58. | :22:03.
of work on Monday. The breakdown was a big focus, a couple of silly | :22:04. | :22:11.
penalties. We were a bit sloppy around the tackle. Not being | :22:12. | :22:16.
decisive in the tackle and not dominating that collision zone and | :22:17. | :22:20.
falling on their side of the ball and not getting awake quickly | :22:21. | :22:24.
enough. But annoyed the referee and he had enough. As well as trying. | :22:25. | :22:34.
Macro we got good turnovers we gave easy outs to them. The ball focus, | :22:35. | :22:42.
we turned it over six times in the first half. These are things to work | :22:43. | :22:47.
on and we have to be better at by next week. Good luck. | :22:48. | :22:53.
The turnover ball will be disappointing but the turnovers | :22:54. | :22:56.
Ireland produced today was one of the reasons I got the win. -- they | :22:57. | :23:04.
got. They know Samoa hold onto the ball and time after time, Samoa | :23:05. | :23:09.
could not win the ball. That is Rory Best against stealing the ball. The | :23:10. | :23:14.
situations are crucial. If you can move that ball, that is Ireland on | :23:15. | :23:21.
the run again. It is that dominance that allows you to create tempo. | :23:22. | :23:26.
Very damaging, those turnovers, to reorganise your defence. You are | :23:27. | :23:32.
moving into a defensive alignment, very difficult. Rory Best again | :23:33. | :23:37.
here. Ireland have used the choke tackle very well in the past but it | :23:38. | :23:41.
is that aggression and control it did so well on today. Let's hear | :23:42. | :23:45.
from the new man in charge, Joe Schmidt. | :23:46. | :23:52.
One game, one win, what is the emotion after that? Relief. We were | :23:53. | :23:58.
a bit untidy. The cohesion was not as good as it should have been, we | :23:59. | :24:03.
made a lot more tackles than they did and I do not think you can | :24:04. | :24:07.
afford to give sides as much ball as we gave today. The scrums started | :24:08. | :24:11.
strongly, the first line-out drive. Draw. And we got a couple of good | :24:12. | :24:20.
tries. -- the line-out drive was top drawer. But it was patchy. Two | :24:21. | :24:26.
massive games coming up. We have some guys out there I do not know | :24:27. | :24:35.
well and we have some with mileage, I would like to get Paul O'Connell | :24:36. | :24:43.
out, Sean O'Brien, that was fortunate for Chris Henry. He was | :24:44. | :24:47.
really excited about his opportunity today and he started really well and | :24:48. | :24:52.
got a turnover in the first ruck and started well but I think it might be | :24:53. | :24:56.
a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is not too bad, but it is great to get | :24:57. | :25:03.
Dave Carney out to get a of tries. The first different from his | :25:04. | :25:06.
brother. A nice night for that household! Are you happy with Paddy | :25:07. | :25:15.
Jackson? He directed us around the field really well. I thought he | :25:16. | :25:18.
kicked the goal really well. Not just Paddy Jackson, we were a bit | :25:19. | :25:22.
wayward with some of the kicking game. And again, I do not think we | :25:23. | :25:30.
can afford to do that next week. If you do that against New Zealand, | :25:31. | :25:35.
they will run the ball back at you and we could be under pressure if | :25:36. | :25:38.
the kicking game is not correct. What is your primary focus on Monday | :25:39. | :25:44.
morning? We will look at how best we can attack them. We will look at how | :25:45. | :25:49.
we attacked tonight and make sure there are things we tidy up. I felt | :25:50. | :25:55.
we were a bit untidy, we lacked a bit of cohesion we would have liked. | :25:56. | :26:02.
I suppose as an appetiser, the victory tastes all right but the | :26:03. | :26:07.
appearance on the plate was not so good! We look forward to next week! | :26:08. | :26:17.
A very very assessment. It is the starter with two big courses to come | :26:18. | :26:22.
with Australia and New Zealand. -- a very fair assessment. It will be a | :26:23. | :26:28.
big week, no question. He recognised we cannot kick that loosely to | :26:29. | :26:31.
Australia or they will punish us and we cannot see dividends defensively | :26:32. | :26:38.
because Australia hold onto the ball better. That dynamic could change | :26:39. | :26:42.
the game a lot. Australia will hold onto the ball more carefully and | :26:43. | :26:46.
they will be more precise in their attacks. What do they need to | :26:47. | :26:50.
improve on to beat Australia next week? Their structure in the first | :26:51. | :26:56.
40 minutes in terms of what they did with the ball. And the execution, | :26:57. | :27:01.
maybe the tactics were to kick the ball out of the first half, the | :27:02. | :27:05.
execution was not right across the pitch. Easy to make this adjustment | :27:06. | :27:09.
on a Monday morning on the back of a win without the pressure from the | :27:10. | :27:13.
media about a poor performance. It was a fair assessment. The threat | :27:14. | :27:18.
from Australia will be from the back three but set piece game will be the | :27:19. | :27:23.
key focus for Ireland. It is not a strength of Australia and if they | :27:24. | :27:27.
can get dominance in that aspect allied with a good performance at | :27:28. | :27:30.
the breakdown, they will be in a position to win that game. Did you | :27:31. | :27:36.
see enough today to be positive about the future for Ireland under | :27:37. | :27:41.
Joe Schmidt? I think so and his assessment was honest upfront. We | :27:42. | :27:45.
will be looking more for precision from that set piece and we will see | :27:46. | :27:49.
more of Ireland holding onto that ball from more faces rather than | :27:50. | :27:54.
kicking away. Thank you very much. Let's look at some of the other | :27:55. | :27:58.
results today. Australia eat Italy by 50 points against 20. | :27:59. | :28:10.
-- beat. Front against New Zealand kicks off in a couple of minutes. We | :28:11. | :28:19.
have a lot more rugby over the next couple of rugby. Next Saturday, it | :28:20. | :28:25.
is the second Autumn International, Ireland against Australia. And the | :28:26. | :28:28.
following week, we have a double helping of live rugby. Join me at | :28:29. | :28:37.
Ravenhill as Ulster continue with their campaign. And then Ireland | :28:38. | :28:44.
against New Zealand. Improvement will be needed if Ireland to beat | :28:45. | :28:48.
New Zealand for the first time, but the new coach got off to a winning | :28:49. | :28:52.
start today. It is goodbye from everybody here. | :28:53. | :28:54. |
