Autumn International Highlights - England v Argentina Rugby Union

Week two of the autumn internationals, and England arrived

back at Twickenham with much to ponder after their opening day

victory against Australia. Next up on this sodden stage, the

Pumas arrive on the back of six straight losing defeats, but has

England know only too well, they can't half pack a punch. -- has

England. Welcome to Twickenham, and after a

wet morning, the sun is daring to come out for this second autumn

Test. Lewis Moody alongside me to enjoy what should be a return for

England. The crowd demanded a bit of that. A bit

England. The crowd demanded a bit of something special. I think we all

do. The England something special. I think we all

rather despondent about their performance last week so it is good

to hear that honesty coming out of the cap. But England really want to

play a great style of rock you. They want to play wide and expansive

Argentina are historically a very tough side to play. Yes. A whole new

front row for England today and that is the area Stuart Lancaster has

rung most changes. A combination of thinking, partly protecting players,

partly getting players out. Youngs has had a baby, so he is having a

break. The front row is very important. That front row, to get on

top of the likes of Ayerza in Argentina, they have got a job, and

they will have a much easier platform if they can get up today

with that centre bearing we need to see. So much questioning over this

week. A big chance. Yes. A great chance for Billy. Stuart put his

faith in Billy and Joel, and they are out there today, but we need a

performance from them today. Let's join our two Andrews in commentary.

This test for England, which still has to be passed and passed well.

Stuart Lancaster's grand plan is yet to be realised. Everybody expects

great things from the men on the field. Compared to the Wallabies

last week, it will be a very different type of challenge for

England today. England will face the challenge with an all-new front row.

Dylan Hartley comes in. David Wilson. Ben Foden gets a chance on

the left wing. Daniel Hourcade, his first game in charge, and he is

without a trio of players. They are injured. Fernandez also missing from

the back line. Juan Martin Hernandez. On the bench, great

strength for England, especially up front with Youngs. Two Newcastle

players among those waiting for Argentina.

The referee gets us under way, England trying to make it two out of

two. Safely into touch through the smoky air from the fireworks. And

Andy Robinson alongside me. People suggesting there is a danger that

this will be straightforward for England because it will be a weaker

Argentina than we are used to seeing, but a dangerous game? Very

dangerous. It is important England play with some temper, though. The

line-out works well for Argentina there. We know it's going to be a

bruising affair. A bit crowded but Argentina do well to keep it alive,

keep it in hand. And move it through.

smartly. -- at there. But Argentina do well. Kicks it well and

accurately. Into touch and Argentina, if not the ball, will at

least have the first decent position of the match. This is what the

championship has done for Argentina. You see they start to move the ball

and testing defence. But a really good start from the England defence.

Really good tackles and pushing Argentina backwards. Argentina

challenge the England line-out but Dixon spots a bit of space. --

Dickson. Not much room so he hacks it on. You can see perhaps the early

intent from England. And up it goes. Nobody there for England. Came

forward and off the Argentinian hands, so Brown able to gather. But

Argentina turn it over again. A long and perhaps misguided kick to

the man of the match last week against Australia. Not the best

chase on his kick and taken by his opposite number, Amorosino.

The scrum-half just pointing the way and he asks his forwards to come in.

Have a little kick and go. And back it comes to Sanchez, and

Brown waiting again, busy in the early exchanges. And that buzz turns

to a groan as he is hit hard. The kick doesn't quite find touch.

And the metro wing, Imhoff, five it down the touching line. Tom Wood was

on hand and then Dickson. The ball has been alive a long time.

England building phase after phase. And the standstill used his heft

there. Wide again. Good work by Tom Wood and the first penalty goes to

England. Argentina going off their feet and it should be a proper

goal. That was a really good start by England. Everybody has had a

touch in the game, playing with some tempo, making two passes, as you can

see here, Wood taking the ball. Good intent to keep two passes going and

that is important for England in this game. Also great to see England

running the ball from their own line and getting Chris Ashton early into

Straight and true and threw it goes. the game.

And England will be pleased with those first five minutes. Against

good Argentinian tackling, they have been able to move the ball against

the yard, so a good start. Into Argentinian hands. Good

attacking position for them now The ball went backwards, says the

referee. Muttering about offside. But back

they come for an Argentinian penalty. Straight from the

successful kick of the penalty given away by England. Frustration for all

coaches. You want to clear your area and your territory and to get a

charge down. Great chase put in by Imhoff. Argentina really have got an

easy three points here. Sanchez is a very useful kicker. A lady swipe of

the boot and that brings Argentina level. -- lazy.

Much more of a contest now at the scrum. England do well enough there.

Ben Foden does have the pace, and into Mike Brown. Good work by Ben

Foden and Brown, linking well. Advantage to England and penalty

coming if they want it, but they might want to make more of this

opportunity. Ball went loose, so back they come for that penalty You

saw two men there who have been competing for the England fullback

Joseph and linking well. -- jersey. Yes, they did. They are going to go

for the line-out here and push the England defence. Here we are. Eight

metres also out. The last line-out was stolen.

Argentina not contesting this one. England tried to get that drive

going, the crowd were willing them on. A bit of confusion and division

created within the Argentina defence. Here is the drive. Five

meters away. They know they have that penalty. Still advantage.

Trying to smuggle it onto Dylan Hartley from Lawes. Closer, closer

still! The line is beckoning! The ball down but not quite there. Yes!

They would! What a very good ball. Put the pressure on the Argentine

defence, trying to put England on the floor, but England were able to

stay up on their feet. Happy enough not to have a look at that. Going

back for that long advantage, that penalty. So, again, Owen Farrell

straight into touch and the crowd like to see this. An important time

for England to score. As you can see, the bind is very good. Does he

get over the line? Looks like it is just short. So they will try it

again. Once more, England driving again. Setting themselves. It seems

inevitable, with the crowd at their back, that they will get to the

line. Can they get the ball down? Argentina splintering. A penalty,

but the try is scored. The first try of the match for England. Well done,

England. It was incredibly hard The Argentinian defence was very good,

but England remained on their feet, got people in front of the ball and

it was well deserved. You can see, England keeping their

chests for word, moving forward getting past that wall, and that is

really hard work. It takes a lot to score in International Rugby Board

by Argentina. Very good defensive work, but impressive play by

England. They are able to play off the second receivers, moving the

ball, Billy Twelvetrees dropping in. Some really good accuracy in their

passing, very impressive. Midway through the half, four points in it

for England, what a position here. They are scrum, just held by Billy

Vunipola. It is still there, and Billy Twelvetrees get the try. The

second for England today. He saw the line. He used that strength. He

really excel rated into the. -- accelerated. Three tries for

England, and why go wide when you can do this? You could see the

Argentina defence drifting off looking for the channels. Billy

Twelvetrees squares up, tries his legs, and shows him how to finish. A

real talent, Billy Twelvetrees. Owen Farrell converts. England's leaders

handsome again. Well worth the result. Courtney Lawes takes

at the moment. Trying to move it on quickly.

Argentina try to turn it over and they have it. The intent was good

from England. Really good intent. The defenders spotted the player at

the back and got good line speed. Better for Owen Farrell to pass

that. Argentina playing much of the game

between their own ten metre line and the 22.

This is hard , hard work for Argentina.

The leap and gather, and England will come again. Argentina pour

through. A penalty for England. Argentina straying offside. A great

passage of play, but Argentina are playing inside their own half and

have been forced to because of England's defence. They do not want

to give the ball away because England have been counterattacking

very well. Round has looked a devastating every time he has got

the ball. -- Mike Brown. That is very useful from Owen Farrell, takes

the player all the way up. That takes some real nerve and skill to

be able to do that. He could easily have put that kick on the 22, but he

has gone for the five metre line. Argentina losing an experienced

player, and on comes Santiago Cordero, making his debut. Usually a

full-back. That is a big loss. Do England have some quality finishing

here? Argentina going for that defensive

drive. Still there for England. Little chip

forward from Mike Brown. Argentina gather it.

England are playing with pace, as much as anything. Lee Dixon is at

the heart of that. We need to give Argentina some credit for the way

they have defended. England have been playing well and getting the

passes in but Argentina have been tackling strongly.

The referee looking for a temple in this game. He does not want any

stops. -- tempo. England line-out. Dylan Hartley is scrabbling his way

to the try line. Just a metre or so from the third England try. Surely

it will come now? There it is. Gets it down this time. The try

move past 20 points. This is a very impressive display from the men in

white. Lots of really good work down the front. Dylan Hartley carrying

grapefruit speed, great Lake drive, really close to the line. Billy

Vunipola adding his legs as well. This will mean a lot to Chris

Ashton. He has had some critics A great finisher who has had a drought

of late. Great carrying, first from Wilson, Hartley picked up as well.

Argentina overcommit, attacking up the wing where Sebastien Cordero has

come in. I would like to see that one again, because as he slid, I was

looking at where his food was. - Santiago Cordero. Not down yet, not

down yet... Would be worth looking at that again. I think his feet were

over the line but still in the air. Conversion for Owen Farrell, who has

his kicking boots with him today. A bright game for Lee Dixon. Such

competition at scrum-half for England. He is the man in

possession. Playing well. coming to them, as Eusebio Guinazu

does his bit. It is a speculative kick.

The England back row are doing a lot of unseen work, putting pressure on

the have backs, forcing them to kick truly.

Marcelo Bosch is going to try to add another three points.

Has the distance, but just drifting wide. 2.5 minutes to go, unhappy

Pumas. They have had some difficult times

in the rugby matches, getting close to Australia, but some big defeats

as well. This might be another. Here is a chance. They have an overlap,

the ball could not quite go there. If they could get a try before

half-time, something to take into the second half...

Sanchez gliding through! The reason he was gliding through is it was the

crossing that gave him the space. That was a really good attack by

Argentina. They have put England under some

example. And he moves off-line, Leguizamon. The referee picks it up.

I'm sure if he had stayed still the referee would have allowed it to

continue. So, towards the final seconds of this half.

Just a fraction too far. Still Argentina's ball. They might just

want to get this out of play and go and read group. -- and re-group The

ball is out, the clock is red. Sanchez is stricken. But it is

half-time and a very, very impressive first half here at

Twickenham from England. All going well so far for England. Three

tries. England have made one change for the second half.

18 points to the good as they kick-off. England under way.

Argentina have a response. England have shown they are full of

confidence. A little bit laboured by Argentina

and getting England's defence up very, very smartly. Argentina back

inside their own half once again, trying to find a way through. The

long pass might just do it. Argentina with a little scissors.

But the ball goes out. But it's going to be an Argentinian ball

came off and England hand. Good passing movement. Very dangerous

runner, he was. Perhaps the first real decent attacking position for

Argentina. Just once they visited the England 22 and they are trying

to march their way there now. Doing well. Good driving, rolling ball.

And a penalty coming. For Argentina. So, Sanchez just send it up. And as

it comes down into England hands they will come back for that

penalty. The Argentina forwards seem very comfortable with this game at

the moment. Not just with the scrum but also with their mauling play. I

have been impressed with the way they have stayed in the game. So,

Nicolas Sanchez... It is good and Argentina have at

least another three points up there. David Beckham. I don't know that I'd

seen him at a ruck a match before. -- at a rugby match. A smile. There

Advantage to England as well. Under we are. A royal wave! He

Argentinian defence. Nothing coming of that so back they come for the

penalty. Using the correct option at the

front of the line-out, and Argentina giving the soft penalty away, which

gives a field position for them to launch another strike attack from

their line-out. So there's the position for England.

This time they are ambling forward at a leisurely pace.

Can England find the same success here as they did in the first half?

Strange to see such a physical specimen, still just 20. Goes

wide... The transfer Argentina doesn't quite pop-up into the hands

of the Argentinian player. But Bosch gets it away. And a good chase

coming in on Farrell. Argentina made some good ground

there. They really improve their defence, putting England to the

fore. Slightly disappointed with the way England played

fore. Slightly disappointed with the poor accuracy of the past. A change

by Argentina. For the second half. Argentina with the ball now.

Just having a more comfortable time, Argentina, in this second-half. Tom

Wood has gone offside. They can fling this about with gay abandon!

The referee says that when forward so they will come back for that

penalty. Argentina have had a bit more field position in the second

half. If they can keep as ashen as they did in the first half, the

possession they have been keeping has been in England's half. In this

half. He is already running back. Happy

with that one. Three from three Just 12 points behind now. Which,

perhaps given England's dominant in the first half, is not what they

were looking for at this stage. They would have liked to click on. -

kick on. England with the drive and the

advantage there. And back they all come. The man in

that row, Manuel Carizza. Feeling the pressure now. Farrell, who was

kicking to the corner, he has now decided to kick for goal. Farrell

missed a true of early kicks against Australia last week. Not an easy

one. But a good side at least for a right foot. Give it the stair!

It is not pretty. Not quite there. Might have made it but Argentina

were spared. And the kick taken in by Ashton. He builds up a head of

steam and takes the tackle. That's a good pick-up. And England

still with it. Living rather dangerously.

The ball comes back to Argentina, and just a few more mistakes

creeping into England's game in this second-half. Sanchez had to take

that deep. Kicked down the throat of Ashton. And taking on his man.

England, their play always looked adventurous in the first half but

now looks a little bit risky. Farrell sees the space... Finds the

space and finds the touch. A really good kick by Owen Farrell, behind

the ball very quickly, finding the space. The England team really

needed that. It is important they now put the pressure on the

Argentina line-out. So, once again, deep inside their own half for

Argentina. Fine, said the referee there.

Argentina still with it. England just being made to work a little bit

harder after the break. Santiago Fernandez was stopped

quickly in midfield. The defences up to the task the

moment. See if there is any more space out wide. The captain tries to

get it in field over to Cabello All of this work has been inside their

own half. Trying to soften up the England defence. A tackle with 4

Hartley. A really good carry through there by Sanchez. Argentina haven't

yet found the key to unlock the England defence.

have the penalty. As they get tired bodies, I can just see the players

dropping in. A cheap penalty to give away. A tackle contest. And, again,

showing how good the England offences. They have been very

physical. -- the England defence is. So a chance now for England to

get themselves into a good position. That is a wonderful kick.

They just pause for a moment to look at the referee... But a penalty to

Argentina and England's attack fizzles out. England haven't gone

through two phases in this half If you think of the multiphase play in

the first half, they haven't been able to do it this half because they

have been inaccurate. Poor passing but also poor support to the

ball-carrier. Argentina couldn't quite find that so England get a

chance again. Mike Brown, fullback! Gives it to Tomkins. From that

famous Rugby League family. England have a penalty as well, a

great opportunity. Big decision for the captain. Is he going to go for

goal or are they going to kick to the corner? Argentina's defence has

become a lot better. Now kicking for the corner. Has that gone the wrong

side of the flag? It has. This is just order line frustration.

-- building the frustration. The 22 restart for Argentina. They still

have a chance but they need the ball. They have it now.

Just a few murderers around -- murmurs around the crowd. This is

not insurmountable, 12 points. murmurs around the crowd. This is

Pressure on the line-out. Argentina have the ball and they will have

their chance. Gonzalo Tiesi is off with that

injury. Another improvised line up for Argentina, that is how close

they are to the line. If they could get a try now, it would be a nervous

final ten minutes. The players are looking at what is

available. Spilled off the hands. Just on the pitch, Benjamin Macome.

This time Argentina play the short one. Some nice passing. Could not

take it through. Maybe break but the ball wasn't with them. Went

backwards. Still the pumas have it. Advantage to Argentina, penalty to

Argentina. Nice little trick playing to the

front. Getting away, but luckily England were able to get the ball

out of his hands. Without that, he would have been through. This has to

go through from Marcelo Bosch full. That was up one. I think that might

be the end of Argentina's chants. That was up one. I think that might

chance. Or even contest, get the penalty. We are into the final four

minutes of this match. Great work by the England pack. The new front Row

has made a real difference to the England scrum. This is really

stopped Argentina putting pressure on England in the last 15 minutes.

It is been -- has been great work. Alex Corbisiero has done himself no

harm coming in for selection for the all Blacks game. England have been

able to take the sting out of the game. Argentina making a couple of

changes. England with a final chance for

something in this second half. Four were they come! Ben Morgan get the

touchdown, and England have their try in this half and suddenly they

have come to life. What a difference it makes. England attacking the

line, being directed against the defence, Ben Morgan working really

hard, being really strong. He will be pleased with that.

Straightforward, England past 3 points, looks much better on the

scoreboard. Second international points, looks much better on the

driver Ben Morgan. And relax. Just a minute to play. The victory will be

England's. Just seconds remaining at

Twickenham. 19 points is the difference. They sing again, they

are heading for victory, a victory over the Wallabies and this will be

a victory over Argentina, but they still have a little bit of fight

left in them. The ball is still alive and it is still Argentina

England are putting the pressure on. Not quite. Argentina might take the

decision to put this out. Cut their losses. Enough, enough. The referee

blows the whistle. A good victory for England, a second-half which

came to light towards the end but really the damage was done in the

first half. An impressive display, in parts, from England. England s

defence has been superb. Victory over

Argentina, bring on New Zealand Congratulations, second victory of

the series. Does that flatter? Yes, I was pleased with the accuracy and

I thought the scoreline reflected it. Other than the last try at the

end, we never did that. Credit to Argentina, they did up their game,

but we need to be better than that, that is for sure. Man of the match,

have you done enough to start next week? I am release apprised, I did

not play 80 minutes . -- really surprised. I just contributed to a

solid forward performance. It is up in the air. Next week is a one-off.

You made some changes in the front row. Has it given you some thoughts

about selection next week? I cannot imagine we will see the scenes Rick

Stein -- same 15 starting against New Zealand. They did well, but it

was nice to have the British Lions front row on the bench. Like I say,

the first thing is to assess this game, we will train Monday and

Tuesday. On the pitch side, it sounds like the party has started.

Behind me, the Argentinian players are warming down. I am joined by

Andy Robinson. Talking about the difference in the two halfs. The

first one gave us many reasons to cheerful and then there was a real

drop-off. The first half, they cheerful and then there was a real

their passes together, they were being really direct. The second

they were trying to go outside Argentina, could not get phases

together, and Argentina improved, defensively, but also their front

five took a bit more control of the game. A good game for the foreword.

Are there still? Around the midfield? Is enough creativity

coming from? -- are there still questions about the midfield? I

think so. Against the stray Leah there was supposed to be a lot more

play for the third receiver, the distributed well, but I think there

is still room to tinker. But he has confidence and it is good to see

Billy Twelvetrees have a solid performance. Plenty more rugby

coming up from these Autumn Internationals. Next Saturday, we

have wheels versus Argentina. Ireland versus Australia. -- Wales.

We have the highlights of the England match. On Sunday, Scotland

are playing South Africa. You can see that one on BBC One. Talking

about England versus New Zealand, it is the highlight of the series. If

this is to be seen as a successful series, England need to win, but

there are still? -- still questions about England. New Zealand are the

best team in the world for a reason. They do what they do well. We had a

really solid first-half performance that we could not back up in the

second half but Argentina did a really good job of stifling the

game. If Chris Robshaw had put the ball in the corner, we would have

had more intensity, more going forward, but there is a lot to work

on. I want to see some more balls going forward. We played with with.

That is nice. But if you do that you need some direction. Whether it is

somebody going hard at the line New Zealand's defence will give us that

space. There will be time on the ball. What we saw last year was

running direct. We will need that from Joel Tomkins and the outside

backs. If England can put together the first half of Argentina and the

second half of Australia, it will be cracking. But New Zealand will be

really upset and they will be coming out and you will see a different New

Zealand side. He'd tinkered with his foreword is. -- forwards. Where you

see him making the most changes It will be interesting to see what he

does. Dylan Hartley's connection was great, but Tom Youngs is really

dynamic. The front five is really strong at the moment. That is green

to be an interesting choice. Courtney Lawes will come in without

doubt. For me, Christian Wade, if he is going to play, it had to be

today. You cannot really bring him in for a New Zealand game, the most

difficult side in the world, for your first. -- first cap. A solid

performance, that is what we want. We will see you next weekend on the
