Hello and welcome to the BBC Sports Centre. Over the next 15 minutes, we | :00:09. | :00:14.
will have a look to the weekend's sport, including the latest from the | :00:15. | :00:20.
third Ashes test. This is Saturday Sportsday. | :00:21. | :00:32.
Manchester City against Arsenal has just kicked off. We will keep you | :00:33. | :00:39.
updated. Also coming up, frustration for the swimmers at the European | :00:40. | :00:44.
Short course Championships. They will have another tough test ahead | :00:45. | :00:48.
against America. Jumping over the gender divide, the | :00:49. | :00:52.
Japanese teenager leading the way at the Winter Olympics now that women | :00:53. | :00:56.
can begin ski jumping. Ross Hutchins was last year by those | :00:57. | :01:01.
with Hodgkin's inferno. This year he's coming back before that, I look | :01:02. | :01:20.
at the day's sport headlines. Justin Rose bogeyed the final hole at the | :01:21. | :01:27.
Austrian open. He is now five shots off the lead of Sergio Garcia. | :01:28. | :01:32.
And Anne Williams, who campaigned to overturn a verdict of accidental | :01:33. | :01:38.
death of her son at Hillsborough, is to be posthumously honoured at the | :01:39. | :01:45.
sports personality awards tomorrow. Now look at the second day's play, | :01:46. | :01:50.
where England's cricketers are trying to avoid defeat against | :01:51. | :01:53.
Australia. It has been a decent day by recent standards. At the close of | :01:54. | :02:00.
play, England are 180-4, trailing by 205 runs. Joe Wilson has the | :02:01. | :02:04.
latest. After two days of the third Test, | :02:05. | :02:10.
here we are not reflecting on Australia regaining the Ashes yet. | :02:11. | :02:15.
But it feels" another day with England feeling frustrated. They | :02:16. | :02:24.
would have been satisfied with a start they made. But at the end of | :02:25. | :02:27.
the day they had lost four wickets, partly due to technology, | :02:28. | :02:30.
the day they had lost four wickets, partly but Australia got Kevin | :02:31. | :02:33.
Pietersen out in the way they would expect to. An ambitious shot trying | :02:34. | :02:38.
to hit it over the head of Mitchell Johnson at mid arm, athletically | :02:39. | :02:41.
caught. Michael Carberry played his part. But when he spoke to us at the | :02:42. | :02:47.
close of play, naturally he was reflecting on that dismissal. | :02:48. | :02:52.
Hanging on in there is a dangerous terminology when you bat. You are | :02:53. | :02:59.
out there to score runs. Kevin is positive player. That is what has | :03:00. | :03:04.
made him successful. He does things that not many of us can. It is a | :03:05. | :03:10.
shock many of us have seen him play time and time again. It is | :03:11. | :03:19.
disappointing, but for him and asked, we want people to play | :03:20. | :03:26.
naturally. -- and asked. At the close of play, I grabbed a word with | :03:27. | :03:31.
Australia's waited ever fast bowler. The point I raised wasn't just a | :03:32. | :03:36.
case of individual Australian bowlers being outstanding again | :03:37. | :03:40.
today. It was the fact they bowled as a unit, effectively keeping to | :03:41. | :03:46.
their plans. They have been impressive this series. They have | :03:47. | :03:51.
executed their game plan is very well. They have put a lot of thought | :03:52. | :03:56.
into it. They have got different plans for different batsmen. And | :03:57. | :03:59.
they are working. They are getting results. That is what you want. To | :04:00. | :04:05.
see something so effective, it has been brilliant. It suffocated | :04:06. | :04:10.
England. Wickets haven't been falling, but other times they have | :04:11. | :04:15.
been dropping them cheaply. I have never seen a match where I wanted | :04:16. | :04:24.
the other team to win. You don't want to see England come over here | :04:25. | :04:28.
and not really shown any heart. You want it to be a good, hard contest, | :04:29. | :04:33.
hopefully with your team coming out. | :04:34. | :04:40.
England will resume behind. Ben spokes -- Ben Stokes and Ian Bell | :04:41. | :04:45.
are at the crease. There is still time to fight. But if they are going | :04:46. | :04:49.
to make Amini for contribution, they need to do it on the third day here | :04:50. | :04:54.
in Perth. -- a meaningful contribution. | :04:55. | :05:00.
And for more Ashes analysis, Close of Play is on the BBC News Channel | :05:01. | :05:04.
at 1.30 this afternoon. Now, Team GB had their most | :05:05. | :05:07.
successful Olympics at London 2012, but no gold medals were won in the | :05:08. | :05:11.
pool. This weekend, at the European Short Course Championships in | :05:12. | :05:13.
Denmark, Fran Halsall has missed out on a medal again, finishing fifth in | :05:14. | :05:17.
the 100 metres freestyle. After Denmark, Halsall joins a European | :05:18. | :05:20.
team to take on the United States in swimming's equivalent of the Ryder | :05:21. | :05:23.
Cup. Nick Hope looks ahead to the Duel in the Pool. | :05:24. | :05:25.
For British swimming, London 2012 will be remembered for tears rather | :05:26. | :05:29.
than triumph. Rebecca Adlington claimed two bronze medals. But there | :05:30. | :05:34.
were countless near misses, none more so than with fun house all. -- | :05:35. | :05:44.
van with Halsall. I trained for years to get a medal, so it hit me | :05:45. | :05:48.
right afterwards, that is done. It was a massive lull. I felt numb, | :05:49. | :05:54.
really, afterwards. I had to get out of the country. I didn't want to | :05:55. | :05:58.
hear about anything to do with Olympics. It was challenging to then | :05:59. | :06:03.
get back into the water and not be scared of coming forth again. After | :06:04. | :06:09.
months, Halsall arrived at the World Championships with renewed | :06:10. | :06:09.
condiments. -- confidence. It was a bit of relief. It was a bit | :06:10. | :06:23.
like, oh, I can do this. I am all right at this swimming lark. In the | :06:24. | :06:31.
long-term, she aims for medals at the next Olympics. Next week she can | :06:32. | :06:37.
see how well she is progressing. I am really excited about this. I have | :06:38. | :06:41.
done two already. I went to Atlanta and did one on the American turf, | :06:42. | :06:50.
which was hard. It is fabulous, my kind of swimming. Are you going to | :06:51. | :07:06.
beat the Americans? Definitely! And you can follow the European | :07:07. | :07:09.
team's progress at Duel in the Pool on BBC Radio5 Live next weekend. One | :07:10. | :07:13.
of the final barriers for female competitors at the Olympics is | :07:14. | :07:16.
falling. For the first time, ski jump will be open to both genders at | :07:17. | :07:20.
next year's Sochi Winter Games. The favourite for that first gold medal | :07:21. | :07:23.
is a Japanese teenager who is just four foot 11 inches tall. Ollie | :07:24. | :07:27.
Williams has been to meet the petite prodigy at the Ski Jump World Cup in | :07:28. | :07:29.
Lillehammer. It has taken years and a court | :07:30. | :07:33.
battle for woman to win the right to ski jump at the Olympic Games. Now | :07:34. | :07:38.
the fight has been won, a new one begins. The favourite for gold in | :07:39. | :07:44.
2014 is one of the youngest keen -- skiers around. She is just 17. | :07:45. | :07:53.
TRANSLATION: I am lucky to jump at a time when things have got better for | :07:54. | :07:57.
us. Female ski jumpers have had to overcome all kinds of challenges in | :07:58. | :08:01.
tough times to get to where we are. It is thanks to the female ski | :08:02. | :08:05.
jumpers before me that I can be so happy and who I am today. Women's | :08:06. | :08:13.
ski jump is new for 2014. This is the most important season in the | :08:14. | :08:15.
lives of the athletes jumping behind me right now. Their first chance to | :08:16. | :08:20.
win Olympic gold is in just two months. Whenever people write about | :08:21. | :08:24.
you, they always mention your height. Does it bother you? I do | :08:25. | :08:33.
wish I were taller. But you can't change the way you were born. What I | :08:34. | :08:38.
am trying to do is make the most out of what potential I have. Japan has | :08:39. | :08:44.
an impressive history in men's ski jump. They won team gold in 1998. | :08:45. | :08:52.
Now fans at home expect the same from her. TRANSLATION: She was the | :08:53. | :09:00.
overall champion at last season's World Cup. She is top of | :09:01. | :09:04.
everybody's list when it comes to gold medal candidates. Lots of fans, | :09:05. | :09:09.
well, the public have high hopes for her. If I were to win a gold medal, | :09:10. | :09:16.
it wouldn't just be my gold medal, it would be a gold medal for all the | :09:17. | :09:19.
people who have supported me up to now, all the people who have cheered | :09:20. | :09:30.
me on, and everybody around me. Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo | :09:31. | :09:32.
Muhammad and European Champion Aaron Cook both eased into the last 16 of | :09:33. | :09:36.
the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester this morning. Britain | :09:37. | :09:39.
already has a gold after Mahama Cho claimed a sudden-death overtime win | :09:40. | :09:42.
over Brazil's Felix. He says it's great preparation ahead of the Rio | :09:43. | :09:48.
Olympics. It is a great start. We have got to | :09:49. | :09:53.
keep up the performance. 2016 is my dream. It is everything that I want. | :09:54. | :10:01.
I will be working for it. British tennis player Ross Hutchins | :10:02. | :10:04.
is preparing for the start of the tennis season at the Brisbane Open | :10:05. | :10:08.
later this month. Hutchins and Colin Flaming have reached two Grand Slam | :10:09. | :10:11.
quarter finals and won three titles together. They're aiming for more | :10:12. | :10:14.
success in 2014. But as David Ornstein has been finding out, being | :10:15. | :10:18.
on court is a world away from where Hutchins was this time last year. | :10:19. | :10:27.
I don't know how many of you know the story... My best friend ever | :10:28. | :10:33.
there, Ross Hutchins, was diagnosed with cancer. He has dealt with it | :10:34. | :10:38.
incredibly well. It was a summer he will never forget. He conquered | :10:39. | :10:41.
cancer and Andy Murray won Wimbledon. But Hutchins has a | :10:42. | :10:45.
remarkable view on which meant most to him. The fact he has been wanting | :10:46. | :10:53.
it for so long and it has been a 26 year dream, now it had come through | :10:54. | :10:55.
commit was the most incredible moment of the year. The cancer, the | :10:56. | :11:02.
treatment, you forget about it. The triumph came in the same month that | :11:03. | :11:06.
Hutchins was given the all clear. A year previously, it was very | :11:07. | :11:11.
different. Hutchins was playing through severe back pain and soon | :11:12. | :11:15.
knew it wasn't a normal injury. It was that Christmas when the bad news | :11:16. | :11:21.
arrived. As soon as I spoke to the doctor, I knew it was cancer. I held | :11:22. | :11:29.
my brother. There was a moment when I told my mum. That was it. | :11:30. | :11:35.
Literally five seconds of tears and emotion and it was, this is reality, | :11:36. | :11:40.
get on with this. This is life. You are going to have to do something | :11:41. | :11:43.
here to get in the right frame of mind to beat this thing. He expected | :11:44. | :11:48.
a two-month course of chemotherapy but the cancer was more advanced | :11:49. | :11:50.
than first feared. The treatment would be longer and more intense. It | :11:51. | :11:58.
is almost like car in your body. -- tar. You realise this is the thing | :11:59. | :12:04.
that is going to put you on the mend. That place is here, back on | :12:05. | :12:10.
the court and preparing for the new season with his partner, Colin | :12:11. | :12:14.
Fleming. They are aiming to become the world's number one pairing. It | :12:15. | :12:20.
was here at the National tennis Centre in Roehampton that the | :12:21. | :12:24.
comeback began and has rapidly gathered pace. Having won the | :12:25. | :12:27.
biggest fight of his life, Hutchins can now resume his battle from the | :12:28. | :12:33.
baseline. And now we can go back to normal waves. We can get focused to | :12:34. | :12:37.
try to be successful on the tennis court. All these things are so | :12:38. | :12:44.
exciting because I knew -- know how different it can be. Now I am back. | :12:45. | :12:50.
I couldn't be happier. Just before we go, a quick update on | :12:51. | :12:54.
the early kick-off in the Premier League, Manchester City against | :12:55. | :12:59.
Arsenal. It is still 0-0. 13 minutes gone in that game. | :13:00. | :13:01.
There's commentary over on BBC Radio5 Live. | :13:02. | :13:03.
And finally, it's the 60th anniversary of Sports Personality of | :13:04. | :13:06.
the Year tomorrow night. The show is live from Leeds. We'll leave you | :13:07. | :13:09.
with the ten sportsmen and women who are looking to succeed Sir Bradley | :13:10. | :13:11.
Wiggins. Goodbye. Henry Cooper. Princess Ann. Nick | :13:12. | :13:20.
Faldo. Paula Radcliffe. David Beckham. Ryan Giggs. Mark | :13:21. | :13:50.
