Come on!

0:00:300:00:31

Hello and welcome to the 2011 MSA Scottish Rally Championships.

0:00:370:00:41

We're at the halfway stage, our foot's flat to the floor,

0:00:410:00:44

we're in top gear, and it's been super-fuelled action all the way.

0:00:440:00:48

So, can two-time defending champion David Bogie make it three in a row?

0:00:480:00:52

Or will the likes of Mike Faulkner, Jock Armstrong and David Wilson spoil the party?

0:00:520:00:56

And what about the chances of Robbie Head

0:00:560:00:59

making a welcome return to rallying after an absence of six years?

0:00:590:01:03

Only one way to find out. Let's take you back to the first event, the Arnold Clark Snowman Rally.

0:01:030:01:09

Timeline, February. Location, Inverness.

0:01:090:01:13

As ever for the first event of the season, the crowds were out

0:01:130:01:17

in force, and this year's contest was more significant than usual.

0:01:170:01:20

The Snowman had been the home event of

0:01:200:01:23

twice Scottish Rally champion Jimmy Girvan,

0:01:230:01:25

who was killed while competing in last year's McRae Forest stages.

0:01:250:01:29

20-odd years rallying, won the Scottish championship twice,

0:01:290:01:33

and it's just quite a poignant moment.

0:01:330:01:36

Jimmy's wasn't the only touching story at this year's Snowman.

0:01:360:01:40

Ken Wood, another former Scottish champion, lost his son Douglas to

0:01:400:01:43

cancer last year, and was paying tribute in his Dolomite Sprint.

0:01:430:01:47

My idea was that I would build it for him for the 2011 championship,

0:01:470:01:51

but before he went, he told us

0:01:510:01:54

I had to finish it, and I had to go rallying in it,

0:01:540:01:56

I had to paint it red, and I had to paint gold wheels on it.

0:01:560:01:59

So that's it - we're ready to go.

0:01:590:02:00

All the usual suspects were in the frame -

0:02:000:02:03

title holder David Bogie and close rival Jock Armstrong would be right up there.

0:02:030:02:07

It's nice to be starting the year as the reigning champion, so...

0:02:070:02:10

There's a good line-up today and it's going to be tough.

0:02:100:02:13

You've got the whole year to win a rally, but

0:02:140:02:17

you want to win this first one for sure, and it'll set you up.

0:02:170:02:19

My expectations? I want to be there, I want to win it.

0:02:190:02:22

I've just rolled into the car park now. Everybody's saying "You're late" -

0:02:220:02:26

I'm not late. Two minutes... I want to keep the momentum going today.

0:02:260:02:30

And there was real anticipation about the

0:02:310:02:34

reappearance of Robbie Head, who'd last competed in the Snowman in 1987.

0:02:340:02:38

I think it's a shot of adrenaline.

0:02:380:02:40

Rallying's a sport that's in your blood, and I think when that

0:02:400:02:43

"five, four, three, two, one" goes, there's nothing to beat it.

0:02:430:02:47

Three...two...one - go!

0:02:470:02:50

Remember, drivers get 30 points for a victory, 28 for second,

0:02:590:03:03

27 for third, 26 for fourth, and so on,

0:03:030:03:06

right down to one point for finishing in 29th spot.

0:03:060:03:10

In Strathrory, track-rusty Robbie Head and Claire Mole produced a very

0:03:120:03:16

creditable run in fifth place - just 24 seconds off the pace.

0:03:160:03:21

And Calum McKenzie, who's moved up from

0:03:230:03:26

his two-wheel drive Mark II Escort to a four-wheel drive EVO VIII

0:03:260:03:30

must have been happy with his performance in the unfamiliar car,

0:03:300:03:33

registering eighth on stage one.

0:03:330:03:36

I'm used to getting organised for the corner long before the corner.

0:03:360:03:40

Now you've got to go a lot deeper into the corner before you turn,

0:03:400:03:43

and put a bit of faith in the four wheel drive.

0:03:430:03:46

Euan Thorburn was another title contender, after having a go at the British Championship last year.

0:03:470:03:52

Driving an EVO IX, the youngster from Duns recorded

0:03:520:03:55

a time of 11 minutes and 35 seconds, good enough for third place overall.

0:03:550:04:00

Ahead of Thorburn by just two seconds, Jock Armstrong, with

0:04:020:04:06

Kirsty Riddick on the notes, was pushing hard in his Subaru Impreza.

0:04:060:04:11

But, out in front, just as he had been in most of last year's

0:04:140:04:18

championship, it was David Bogie and co-driver Kevin Rae in their EVO IX,

0:04:180:04:23

covering the stage in 11.28.05 clear of the field.

0:04:230:04:28

There was drama on one, as Nigel Feeney and navigator Ian Angell

0:04:310:04:35

were first to reach the EVO IX of Stuart Walker and Caroline Will.

0:04:350:04:39

It had caught fire near the stage finish.

0:04:390:04:42

Car's on fire, whoa, car's on fire!

0:04:420:04:45

He's on fire!

0:04:470:04:49

The safety crews put out the fire and no-one was hurt,

0:04:520:04:55

but the event was delayed for about half an hour.

0:04:550:04:59

It's a long left, tight - keep in...

0:05:070:05:09

Grip throughout the Snowman was inconsistent -

0:05:130:05:17

drivers found themselves confronted by snow, ice, mud and gravel.

0:05:170:05:21

Choice of tread was the main problem,

0:05:210:05:23

and Armstrong dropped seven seconds

0:05:230:05:25

by taking off the mud tyres for stage two.

0:05:250:05:29

After a poor first test, Lockerbie's Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy

0:05:320:05:36

were third fastest in Carbisdale,

0:05:360:05:38

which moved them up a place in the standings.

0:05:380:05:40

Bogie appeared to take his foot off the gas.

0:05:420:05:45

But Thorburn put his foot down and recorded the fastest time

0:05:470:05:51

to move into second place overall, six seconds behind Bogie.

0:05:510:05:55

Donnie Macdonald, from Inverness, was consolidating his position in

0:06:080:06:11

the top ten, with the sixth fastest time through Dalnessie

0:06:110:06:14

in his EVO IX.

0:06:140:06:16

Local driver Andy Horne was climbing steadily up the field,

0:06:170:06:20

his instantly recognisable Metro 6R4-based DAM giving spectators a real thrill.

0:06:200:06:26

But Thorburn was again quickest around Dalnessie,

0:06:260:06:30

with Bogie six seconds behind.

0:06:300:06:32

The two were now locked dead level at the top of the leaderboard.

0:06:320:06:36

Although Head and Mole were going backwards

0:07:190:07:22

and lay in seventh place after Dalchork,

0:07:220:07:24

there were still reasons to be cheerful for Robbie.

0:07:240:07:27

It was going really well, but then we had a puncture on stage three

0:07:270:07:30

so dropped a fair chunk of time about halfway through.

0:07:300:07:34

And then stage four, the rear brake pipe wore through

0:07:340:07:37

and we'd no rear brakes for about five miles,

0:07:370:07:40

so we dropped a heck of a lot of time - over a minute in that stage.

0:07:400:07:43

So we've battled our way down to seventh or something.

0:07:430:07:46

We'll have a good one in the last one!

0:07:460:07:48

Mike Faulkner was much happier with his performances in stages two to four.

0:07:500:07:55

Horrendous first stage - we had a spin on the first chicane and that just did our confidence.

0:07:550:08:00

It was really patchy ice, and trying to pick the grit

0:08:000:08:03

was really difficult, and we just couldn't get the confidence.

0:08:030:08:07

So not pleased with the time on stage one, but we've managed

0:08:070:08:10

some good time since then and up to fourth.

0:08:100:08:12

Despite some tyre problems, Jock Armstrong hadn't been out of the top three all day -

0:08:130:08:17

although his position after stage four did come as a bit of a revelation.

0:08:170:08:21

Quite surprised to be in third -

0:08:210:08:22

things just haven't went the way I wanted them to go.

0:08:220:08:25

The stages have actually been very muddy,

0:08:280:08:31

not as good as I thought - and gravelly as well.

0:08:310:08:34

Not as good as I wanted to be,

0:08:350:08:36

but hey, there's one stage left.

0:08:360:08:39

Armstrong would have to go some to catch Bogie and Thorburn.

0:08:400:08:44

The pair had been duelling back and forth, but on Dalchork

0:08:440:08:47

it was Bogie who re-asserted control,

0:08:470:08:49

taking 12 seconds out of his rival in just eight miles.

0:08:490:08:53

We had a massive jump on the second stage there so

0:08:530:08:56

possibly the downpipe could be squashed perhaps. The car does feel a little bit down on power.

0:08:560:09:02

But other than that, very, very good.

0:09:020:09:04

Good run on three, but we were running second on the road

0:09:040:09:07

on the fourth stage.

0:09:070:09:09

The start of the stage was fine and then it became

0:09:090:09:11

slippy a bit, so we lost,

0:09:110:09:13

I think, most of the time through that slippy part.

0:09:130:09:16

I don't know if it was better for the guys running further back.

0:09:160:09:19

But it is what it is, and there's 12 seconds between us.

0:09:190:09:22

A puncture or a spin or anything in the last stages

0:09:220:09:25

and it could all change, so still time to go yet.

0:09:250:09:27

Going into the final test, just over a minute separated

0:09:370:09:41

Donnie Macdonald in sixth from tenth-placed Stevie Brown.

0:09:410:09:45

So it was game on for the minor placings.

0:09:450:09:47

Robbie Head rolled back the years, coming on strong in the final test,

0:09:490:09:54

recording third quickest time - his best performance in the event.

0:09:540:09:58

There's so much information you have to log in.

0:09:580:10:00

You're not only looking at the road surface and driving 130 mph,

0:10:000:10:04

you're listening to the pacenotes,

0:10:040:10:05

and it took a bit longer than I expected to get back into that.

0:10:050:10:10

Everything was new. The whole package was new,

0:10:120:10:15

and it's got better all the time, all day, so...next time.

0:10:150:10:19

-Next time it'll be better.

-That old rally story - next time!

0:10:190:10:22

Closer to the top of the leaderboard,

0:10:220:10:24

all Jock Armstrong had to do was consolidate.

0:10:240:10:28

Third would guarantee him a podium finish

0:10:340:10:37

in the first rally of the year.

0:10:370:10:38

He was second fastest through Morangie, and did just that.

0:10:380:10:42

-OK...

-Well done.

0:10:420:10:45

That's sick, that.

0:10:470:10:49

That's sicker than ice and snow, Kirsty.

0:10:490:10:51

'Well done to David and Euan, the two young whippersnappers coming up'

0:10:520:10:56

so I'm the old man at the rear.

0:10:560:10:57

Never mind. At least I'm on the podium.

0:10:570:10:59

Euan Thorburn's day didn't end as he'd have wished...

0:10:590:11:03

He finished ten seconds adrift of Armstrong in the stage,

0:11:030:11:07

but it did confirm him in second overall.

0:11:070:11:10

The day belonged to David Bogie and Kevin Rae, who increased their lead

0:11:100:11:13

over Thorburn with their third fastest stage time of the day

0:11:130:11:16

which ensured a first Snowman victory for Bogie.

0:11:160:11:19

When we lost six seconds, I thought, time to up the game here.

0:11:190:11:22

Maybe just getting a wee bit lazy.

0:11:220:11:23

But we upped it for the last two stages, and it obviously came good.

0:11:230:11:27

Ken Wood and son Gordon put up a great showing in their

0:11:290:11:33

Dolomite Sprint, competing in the memory of Ken's other son Douglas.

0:11:330:11:37

After peaking at 33rd at the end of stage three,

0:11:370:11:40

the family duo just failed to make it to the finish line.

0:11:400:11:43

But it was a notable effort to start their championship campaign.

0:11:430:11:48

So after one round of the MSA Scottish Rally Championship

0:11:490:11:53

the leaderboard looks like this.

0:11:530:11:55

In fifth on 25 points, it's Andy Horne.

0:11:550:11:58

Mike Faulkner is lying fourth on 26 points.

0:11:590:12:04

Jock Armstrong is third with 27.

0:12:040:12:07

In second, it's Euan Thorburn on 28.

0:12:090:12:13

But, with an early lead, it's last year's champion David Bogie

0:12:140:12:18

with 30 points.

0:12:180:12:20

One of the great things about these SRC events is that you get to do some car-spotting.

0:12:220:12:27

There are some really impressive bits of kit around, just like this one.

0:12:270:12:32

One of the most striking, though, is a 1965 Ford Anglia owned by Euan Mackay, from Brora.

0:12:320:12:36

We're building up for this event.

0:12:440:12:46

First time on the gravel rear wheel drive, so

0:12:460:12:49

just have to see how it goes.

0:12:490:12:50

We've done a bit of testing, but just going to have to

0:12:500:12:52

play it by ear, kind of thing.

0:12:520:12:54

Pretty reliable... So it's a Vauxhall engine,

0:12:540:12:57

producing about 230 horsepower. Rear wheel drive,

0:12:570:13:00

so it's going to be a lot of power in a wee car. See how it goes.

0:13:000:13:04

The tenth anniversary running of the Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally

0:13:200:13:24

in the forests around Jedburgh was blessed with blue skies.

0:13:240:13:28

There was a new look to the event.

0:13:300:13:33

Drivers and crews faced only four stages -

0:13:330:13:36

but at over 17 miles, stage two Broomylinn was an absolute beast,

0:13:360:13:40

which would separate the wannabes from the winners.

0:13:400:13:43

The long stage allows you to get a bit more of a rhythm, and you have to...

0:13:430:13:47

maybe have a little bit more focus on making sure

0:13:470:13:49

your concentration stays up and the effort stays up.

0:13:490:13:52

That's about the only difference - it's just going to have to be 100%.

0:13:520:13:55

Reay Mackay had a hard act to follow, as he drove a famous Subaru Impreza back into the limelight.

0:13:550:14:02

It belonged to world rally champion Richard Burns, who died from cancer in 2005.

0:14:020:14:07

I don't think I'll drive it like it was driven before. The handling's superb.

0:14:070:14:11

It's much more stable at high speed, and just the cornering as well

0:14:110:14:15

so still getting used to it.

0:14:150:14:17

I think there'll be another few rallies before we get up to speed.

0:14:170:14:21

The Border Counties was the only rally in the Scottish championship

0:14:210:14:24

calendar to have evaded defending champion David Bogie.

0:14:240:14:28

And with a superb entry list, it was going to be tough for the Dumfries ace.

0:14:280:14:32

It's going to be a hard-chasing pack at the front certainly, so

0:14:320:14:35

leading them away, I'm just looking forward to it.

0:14:350:14:38

I've got new suspension in the car for today,

0:14:380:14:40

which might some getting used to.

0:14:400:14:42

Irish Group N regular Phillip Morrow hired an Escort Mark II

0:14:550:14:59

after his EVO IX developed engine problems before the event.

0:14:590:15:03

Even his skills couldn't stop Alness's David Wilson and co-driver

0:15:030:15:07

Dave Robson from almost catching him right at the end of the opening test.

0:15:070:15:11

Their time of seven minutes and 19 seconds left them seven seconds down

0:15:110:15:16

on Jock Armstrong and navigator Kirsty Riddick.

0:15:160:15:19

But they were soon out of the event with a broken gear stick - their second successive retirement.

0:15:190:15:24

Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton finished stage one just six seconds off the pace in third spot.

0:15:270:15:32

With a charging Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy in second position.

0:15:340:15:38

However, the lure of winning his first Border Counties was a big incentive for Bogie,

0:15:490:15:54

as he finished Wauchope five seconds ahead of Faulkner in a time of 7.01.

0:15:540:15:59

All the crews were agreed the rally would be won or lost in Broomylinn.

0:16:120:16:16

It was narrow with lots of loose gravel,

0:16:160:16:19

so it certainly favoured the brave.

0:16:190:16:21

Inverness driver Andy Horne and navigator Jim Howie

0:16:240:16:27

hadn't had the best of times in Wauchope,

0:16:270:16:29

but they were flying through stage two

0:16:290:16:31

and pushed themselves up into fifth position.

0:16:310:16:34

We were trying to go a bit hard and it didn't work for us, so

0:16:340:16:38

with the long stage we tried just to take it consistently

0:16:380:16:42

and it seems to have paid off, we've come out with a fair time.

0:16:420:16:45

Wayne Sisson, from Carnforth, was also making a move in Broomylinn, taking fourth place overall.

0:16:470:16:54

We took time out of Andy on the long one, so...

0:16:540:16:57

the pace is fine I think, we'll just hopefully step it up a wee bit

0:16:570:17:02

once I've got more mileage under my belt again.

0:17:020:17:05

Thorburn and Beaton were disappointed to be only fourth fastest over the 17 miles,

0:17:080:17:12

and had to be content with maintaining their third place.

0:17:120:17:15

There's a line through it, and as soon as you get off the line onto the loose stuff

0:17:150:17:19

it obviously sends you sideways,

0:17:190:17:21

and it's just not the way I usually drive it.

0:17:210:17:24

I usually try and carry as much speed as I can, but you just can't

0:17:240:17:27

do it here, and we were losing out to the more powerful cars a bit.

0:17:270:17:31

Overall it never flowed really well,

0:17:310:17:33

so we'll try and get some back on the next two.

0:17:330:17:35

I don't think they're quite as loose, so hopefully it'll be in our favour.

0:17:350:17:38

It was left to Faulkner and Foy to mount the only

0:17:390:17:42

serious challenge to the leaders,

0:17:420:17:44

as they dropped just 11 seconds to stay in a strong second position.

0:17:440:17:47

With a few new faces in his service crew, everyone wanted to

0:17:500:17:53

make sure nothing was left to chance in the final two tests.

0:17:530:17:57

But it would be an uphill struggle to catch the defending Scottish champions.

0:17:570:18:00

Once again it was David Bogie who led the way, setting a benchmark time.

0:18:150:18:21

By the end of the test he was leading the field by 16 seconds, and looked unstoppable.

0:18:210:18:27

There was some movement in the field after Redesdale.

0:18:390:18:42

Cumbrian duo Paul Benn and Richard Cooke floored it

0:18:420:18:45

with the third fastest stage time,

0:18:450:18:47

elevating themselves into sixth overall.

0:18:470:18:49

The rally has painful memories for Mr Benn.

0:18:490:18:52

The last time we did the Borders was in '07,

0:18:520:18:55

and we had quite a bad accident,

0:18:550:18:57

so that's the only downside to us.

0:18:570:19:00

We love the event,

0:19:000:19:02

but obviously we've a little bit of thinking in our heads that

0:19:020:19:06

we need to be careful at the same time.

0:19:060:19:09

Bogie and Rae again recorded

0:19:090:19:10

the quickest time by far through stage three,

0:19:100:19:14

covering the 13 miles

0:19:140:19:16

in 13 minutes and 19 seconds.

0:19:160:19:18

So the fight was really about the also-rans.

0:19:200:19:24

Robbie Head, with Claire Mole navigating,

0:19:260:19:29

was justifying his decision to get back into competitive rallying.

0:19:290:19:33

They were lying fifth in their EVO IX.

0:19:330:19:35

Thorburn and Beaton had another poor run in three, only clocking the sixth fastest stage time,

0:19:350:19:42

but holding on to third position in the event.

0:19:420:19:45

Faulkner and Foy were the only realistic challengers to Bogie.

0:19:460:19:50

But they were 31 seconds adrift -

0:19:500:19:52

and although they were absolutely flying in Redesdale,

0:19:520:19:55

they'd need something to happen to the Dumfries driver

0:19:550:19:58

on the shortest stage of all to have any chance of a win.

0:19:580:20:01

Hyndlee proved to be the tightest test of the day.

0:20:410:20:45

Head and Mole tied with Benn and Cooke

0:20:450:20:47

in the fourth fastest time for the stage -

0:20:470:20:49

six minutes and five seconds.

0:20:490:20:51

Despite slipping further behind with a stage time of 6.09,

0:20:540:20:57

Thorburn and Beaton did enough to confirm a third place finish.

0:20:570:21:01

Yeah, third's better than what I expected.

0:21:010:21:04

Pretty bad day today, just never got into a rhythm.

0:21:040:21:07

Just didn't seem to work all day today.

0:21:070:21:09

Faulkner and Foy came third in the stage, but held onto second spot overall.

0:21:090:21:15

It was Bogie and Rae who again looked down on the rest of the field,

0:21:150:21:18

coming through Hyndlees quickest in six minutes exactly,

0:21:180:21:22

to book their second successive win of this year's championship.

0:21:220:21:26

Border Counties is a rally I've never won before, so

0:21:260:21:29

I was desperate to tick that box.

0:21:290:21:31

And with having the last seven Scottish Championship wins

0:21:310:21:35

that's the clean slate, the clean streak. So I'm happy.

0:21:350:21:37

As ever, the Border Counties threw up a couple of surprise packages,

0:21:380:21:43

the most impressive of which was Oban duo Stephen and Kevin Lockhart.

0:21:430:21:48

They confounded their 36th seeding, to place ninth overall in an EVO VII.

0:21:480:21:53

There was a splendid class two win for 17-year-old Greg McKnight from

0:21:540:21:58

Dumfries, competing in only his second rally in a Vauxhall Nova.

0:21:580:22:02

Let's look at the SRC Drivers' Championship after two events.

0:22:040:22:08

In fifth, it's Robbie Head on 48 points.

0:22:080:22:12

Andy Horne is fourth with 51.

0:22:130:22:16

It's Mike Faulkner on 54 points in third.

0:22:180:22:21

Euan Thorburn's second with 55 points.

0:22:220:22:26

But in the lead, it's David Bogie with a perfect 60 points.

0:22:270:22:31

What are the qualities required to be a successful rally crew?

0:22:340:22:39

Well, you have to be cool under pressure, quick in all conditions and totally focused.

0:22:390:22:43

Putting all that together is really difficult, but just imagine how

0:22:430:22:48

tough it is when you quite literally have to take a step up in class.

0:22:480:22:52

We moved up from the Nova last year up to the Mitsubishi EVO VI this year...

0:22:550:23:00

It's a lot smoother, the car, to drive - it's just the amount of

0:23:040:23:07

speed that you're carrying that makes it really hard to judge.

0:23:070:23:11

Especially with the fast stuff.

0:23:110:23:13

So it's taken a lot of getting used to.

0:23:130:23:15

You're carrying that much more speed.

0:23:200:23:22

It's just having the confidence that, yes, it will get round the corner fine!

0:23:220:23:25

If we turn in a good result here or there, then all the better, but it's

0:23:310:23:35

still early on in the season, so hopefully a bit more next year.

0:23:350:23:40

The third event in the SRC calendar around Aberdeen, the CARS Recovery Granite City Rally,

0:23:440:23:50

is always exciting, with fast technical stages squeezing the very best out of the crews.

0:23:500:23:56

Andy Horne's enjoyed a good start to his season -

0:23:560:23:59

he won this event in 2007, and he was happy with his preparations for this year.

0:23:590:24:05

Everything was perfect for us behind the scenes.

0:24:050:24:07

The team have to merge together now and make it all work.

0:24:070:24:11

If anything goes wrong, it'll be human error today.

0:24:110:24:13

In contrast, David Wilson had been the victim of mechanical failures in the first two rallies,

0:24:130:24:20

and he needed an ace performance to kick-start his push for honours.

0:24:200:24:23

Spent the last two weeks completely overhauling the car.

0:24:230:24:26

It needed an engine rebuild, brake pipes, suspension rebuild,

0:24:260:24:29

so a lot of lot of work.

0:24:290:24:30

It was quite reassuring yesterday - just got here on time, the car was

0:24:300:24:34

running perfect, so it's just down to the luck again.

0:24:340:24:38

Current SRC leader and defending champion David Bogie's also

0:24:380:24:42

trying his hand at the British Rally Championship.

0:24:420:24:45

Juggling both isn't easy.

0:24:450:24:47

It has put pressure on us this year.

0:24:470:24:49

We have to get the car through in one piece,

0:24:490:24:51

because there's very little time to sort it

0:24:510:24:53

-if something

-was

-to go wrong.

0:24:530:24:55

It's the same this weekend - I'm out again in two weeks' time

0:24:550:24:58

so it doesn't leave a huge amount of time to do any repairs.

0:24:580:25:01

Jock Armstrong is another driver who'd have wished for a better set of results.

0:25:010:25:06

He was hoping to bounce back from his non-finish in Jedburgh with a victory in Aberdeen.

0:25:060:25:10

We've got to have a win. Or be in...

0:25:100:25:13

You're always in the top three, but to win it's another scenario.

0:25:130:25:17

We'll see what happens here.

0:25:170:25:19

With a remarkable eight SRC event wins on the spin,

0:25:320:25:35

it was no surprise to see David Bogie and co-driver Kevin Rae

0:25:350:25:39

leading the way on stage one in their Mitsubishi EVO IX.

0:25:390:25:42

They covered the test in the fastest time of six minutes and 34 seconds.

0:25:420:25:47

That was seven seconds quicker than local driver and twice Scottish champion Dave Weston, who was an

0:25:480:25:54

early retirement on the Snowman and missed the Border Counties.

0:25:540:26:00

Left one in, lock right seven...

0:26:000:26:03

Jock Armstrong and Kirsty Riddick were third in their Subaru Impreza.

0:26:030:26:07

A further four seconds behind Weston.

0:26:070:26:09

Left five, 150...

0:26:100:26:13

-Very good.

-Like that?

-Yep.

0:26:150:26:18

As expected, Andy Horne, with Jim Howie on the notes,

0:26:200:26:23

put up a fine performance in the first run through Fetteresso.

0:26:230:26:27

Fourth overall, just a couple of seconds behind Armstrong.

0:26:270:26:30

Former Renault and Honda works driver Robbie Head, with Claire Mole

0:26:310:26:36

in the navigator's seat, rounded off the top five after stage one.

0:26:360:26:40

Although he was tied for time with David Wilson,

0:26:400:26:42

who also went around the test in six minutes and 51 seconds.

0:26:420:26:46

Euan Thorburn, from Duns, and co-driver Paul Beaton, were

0:26:470:26:51

going well until a freak incident took the wind out of their sails.

0:26:510:26:55

First stage was OK up until about halfway through.

0:26:550:26:58

There was a left-hander, it was under the trees and the branches,

0:26:580:27:02

brushed the side of the car.

0:27:020:27:03

There's a little switch on the outside that cuts the car out

0:27:030:27:07

if there's an emergency,

0:27:070:27:09

but the branches hit the switch and cut the car out completely dead.

0:27:090:27:12

We had to call the spectators over to prise the button back up

0:27:120:27:15

to let us go again, so we dropped 30, 40 seconds easily there.

0:27:150:27:18

After that, you're on the back foot and you're never going to gain that back.

0:27:180:27:24

Ten crews had already retired before the start of Glenfarquhar.

0:27:330:27:38

And there were to be more casualties in this test.

0:27:380:27:40

Most dramatic was an accident involving the Peugeot 205 of Jordan Black and Kirstie Marshall.

0:27:400:27:46

We got it wrong at one of the corners.

0:27:460:27:50

There was a car off in front of us, and when they were coming out the bank

0:27:500:27:53

and we got a fright and tried to get out of their road

0:27:530:27:57

and lost it and tumbled.

0:27:570:27:58

Nose first down the bank and kept tumbling.

0:27:580:28:00

You can see the cage has done its job though, it just shows you how safe these cars really are.

0:28:000:28:05

It's remarkable that both of us got out unscathed.

0:28:050:28:07

Dave Weston hadn't competed in the SRC for two-and-a-half years.

0:28:070:28:12

But he was finding his feet in his home event and scorched around the stage in 10.58.

0:28:120:28:16

Which relegated Bogie and Rae into second spot overall.

0:28:160:28:22

They didn't cope as well with the loose surface

0:28:220:28:25

and wound up 12 seconds down on Weston.

0:28:250:28:27

Jock Armstrong's time of 11.16 saw him consolidate

0:28:290:28:32

third position over Robbie Head, who'd moved up one place to fourth.

0:28:320:28:37

And long six right open...

0:28:380:28:41

And Carnforth's Wayne Sisson who was making strong forward progress

0:28:410:28:46

from eighth spot into fifth.

0:28:460:28:48

The top three reinforced their superiority on stage three.

0:28:590:29:03

Weston again setting the fastest time of 7.06 in his 2001 Ford Focus World Rally Car.

0:29:030:29:11

But, it was close with Bogie and Rae only a second behind

0:29:130:29:16

in the stage and six adrift overall going into service.

0:29:160:29:20

Edzell Airfield was being used for service, which unusually was one hour long.

0:29:260:29:32

So plenty of time to find out your latest position...

0:29:320:29:35

Compare notes about the next three stages...

0:29:350:29:40

Check out the spare...

0:29:400:29:41

..and carry out some running repairs.

0:29:430:29:46

No problems with the car. The car's been fantastic, the tyres have been brilliant.

0:29:460:29:50

It's probably been me that's inflicted the problems into the car.

0:29:500:29:53

So we've put fresh fluid through,

0:29:530:29:55

bled all the fluid through, so there's new fluid so...

0:29:550:29:57

Confident it should be all right through the rest of the day.

0:29:570:30:00

I don't think I could go much harder at the moment.

0:30:000:30:02

I would imagine David's got something in reserve

0:30:020:30:05

as he normally does, cos he's going really well this year.

0:30:050:30:08

But, no, I'll just keep enjoying it.

0:30:080:30:11

Armstrong and Riddick were 25 seconds behind Bogie,

0:30:120:30:16

but Jock was hopeful of pushing his young rival to the limit.

0:30:160:30:20

David is the only other one I need to beat today.

0:30:200:30:22

There's a few seconds between us, but, you know, you just need to go wider,

0:30:220:30:26

slide off on a corner, the pressure's there, there's plenty of pace. Quite happy today.

0:30:260:30:30

The real struggle was behind the top three.

0:30:300:30:34

Only six seconds separated Robbie Head in fourth.

0:30:340:30:37

From Wayne Sisson in fifth.

0:30:390:30:42

Mike Faulkner in sixth.

0:30:450:30:48

And David Wilson in seventh position.

0:30:510:30:54

There was very little in it.

0:30:560:30:58

We were obviously not miles away, but I didn't think we were on 110% as normal.

0:30:580:31:01

We'll try a little bit harder this afternoon,

0:31:010:31:04

see if we can get up to fourth. That's our aim.

0:31:040:31:06

Struggling on the loose marbles a little bit in terms of the traction.

0:31:060:31:10

But certainly, it's a balance between attacking

0:31:100:31:12

really hard and sliding around everywhere and loosing time

0:31:120:31:15

and just trying to be aggressive as well.

0:31:150:31:17

It was all change through the short fourth test -

0:31:550:31:59

Blackhall, near Banchory.

0:31:590:32:00

No-one could live with Bogie as he posted a seriously quick time

0:32:000:32:06

of five minutes and 55 seconds.

0:32:060:32:09

That was seven faster than Weston, which meant the Aberdeen driver

0:32:110:32:14

slipped back into the runners-up position with two stages left, although these two drivers

0:32:140:32:19

were almost a minute ahead of the rest of the field.

0:32:190:32:22

Jock Armstrong's hopes of overtaking Bogie disappeared

0:32:220:32:27

as a puncture ended his challenge.

0:32:270:32:29

What's wrong with it?

0:32:290:32:32

Open long left seven...

0:32:320:32:35

It was Robbie Head who took over from Jock in third.

0:32:350:32:39

And young David Wilson's third fastest stage time of 6.06

0:32:390:32:44

saw him achieve his ambition of making it

0:32:440:32:47

into fourth position in the rally overall.

0:32:470:32:50

With Mike Faulkner in fifth, only four seconds separated the three drivers

0:32:520:32:57

and the Granite City was shaping up to be one of the closest fought rallies of recent years.

0:32:570:33:02

It could hardly have been closer between the top two drivers in stage five.

0:33:120:33:18

Weston completing Durris two seconds faster than Bogie,

0:33:180:33:22

who now found himself in P2 - a single second behind Weston.

0:33:220:33:27

It was neck and neck in the struggle for third.

0:33:280:33:31

Mike Faulkner had leapfrogged Wilson and Head.

0:33:310:33:34

So it was all to play for going into Fetteresso for the second time.

0:33:340:33:38

Over the shortest test of the day,

0:33:470:33:49

there was never going to be much between Weston and Bogie.

0:33:490:33:52

They posted identical times of four minutes and 43 seconds - a winning return for Weston.

0:33:520:33:59

It was tight all day, I mean we were only two seconds out of David.

0:33:590:34:03

Being honest, that's an ex-2001 world rally car,

0:34:030:34:05

so it should be beaten at a virtual standard bend car.

0:34:050:34:08

He's a fantastic driver and had a fantastic season.

0:34:080:34:11

To beat the current leader in British championship. I'm fair chuffed with myself.

0:34:110:34:15

We knew coming out the last stage it was going to be very, very close,

0:34:150:34:18

so just to get pipped by a second was frustrating.

0:34:180:34:20

It would maybe have been easier if we had lost by 10 or 15.

0:34:200:34:23

The contest for third was as tight as you could get.

0:34:230:34:27

Faulkner and Wilson tied on the same time,

0:34:270:34:29

but the Alness youngster clinched the final podium position

0:34:290:34:32

under tiebreak rules thanks to a quicker time through the first stage.

0:34:320:34:35

Oh, brilliant. So delighted, I never thought we would be here.

0:34:350:34:39

Thought maybe fourth, but never third. It's brilliant.

0:34:390:34:42

A bit gutted really, but...

0:34:450:34:47

Still, live to fight another day.

0:34:470:34:50

The most disappointed man on the day was Jock Armstrong.

0:34:500:34:55

His puncture on four damaging his title aspirations.

0:34:550:34:59

Disaster today. Front puncture at the five or six mile stage,

0:34:590:35:04

maybe within the first mile.

0:35:040:35:06

Just went down and needed to decide whether to stop and change it

0:35:060:35:09

or just roll to the end, so we just trundled to the end.

0:35:090:35:13

Disappointed to say the least.

0:35:130:35:15

That's life, isn't it? That's rallying.

0:35:150:35:17

In other classes, Alasdair Graham, with Kenny McGuire on the notes,

0:35:220:35:25

took top honours in the 1600 category in his Vauxhall Corsa.

0:35:250:35:29

And Iain Haining, from Dumfries, with Mairi Riddick navigating,

0:35:310:35:35

recorded their third straight victory in class three in a Vauxhall Nova.

0:35:350:35:39

After three rounds of the SRC, Donnie MacDonald finds himself

0:35:410:35:46

in fifth position thanks to top ten finishes in the first two events.

0:35:460:35:51

Robbie Head's nine points in front of MacDonald in fourth.

0:35:510:35:56

In third, it's Euan Thorburn on 79 points.

0:35:560:36:00

Mike Faulkner's second with 80.

0:36:000:36:03

But still leading, it's David Bogie on 88 points.

0:36:050:36:10

Louise Sutherland is one of the SRC's best-known navigators.

0:36:130:36:18

She's a self-confessed rally nut, she's often

0:36:180:36:21

seen tearing around the events in Steve Bannister's Mark II Escort.

0:36:210:36:24

Steve didn't compete in Aberdeen, so Louise just had to find another seat.

0:36:240:36:30

Completely different driving style.

0:36:300:36:33

A lot faster into corners, so braking is an awful lot later.

0:36:330:36:37

Quicker away from corners as well, it just feels

0:36:370:36:39

much more stable really.

0:36:390:36:42

It makes a change looking out the front window. It's good.

0:36:460:36:50

I would always say I'm a Mark II girl, to be honest.

0:36:560:36:58

I love the rear wheel drive, I love the feeling it gives you.

0:36:580:37:01

It's a real buzz sitting in a Mark II car, especially when it's driven well.

0:37:010:37:06

It is great to get out in a four-wheel drive,

0:37:060:37:08

but I think ultimately I will always prefer the two-wheel drive.

0:37:080:37:12

Once again, the Jim Clark Reivers Rally was flagged off from the centre of Duns, its spiritual home.

0:37:120:37:18

Spectators were out in numbers on the eight stages, although some were more interested than others.

0:37:180:37:26

The Reivers is the only SRC event run on public roads.

0:37:260:37:30

Tarmac has its critics, but many of the drivers love the challenges thrown up by the surface.

0:37:300:37:37

I really like this event. I've done it once before in '97

0:37:370:37:39

in a Renault and we were fortunate enough to win it,

0:37:390:37:42

and that was the international part of the rally.

0:37:420:37:45

I like the stages, I've a bit of knowledge of these stages,

0:37:450:37:47

-so hopefully that will stand me in good stead.

-I like the tarmac.

0:37:470:37:50

I've had some good results on the tarmac in the past,

0:37:500:37:52

but this rally has never been particularly good to me,

0:37:520:37:54

so we're hoping for a good result today to put that right.

0:37:540:37:57

David Bogie's leading the Scottish and British championships after three rounds.

0:37:590:38:04

He'd switched from his usual EVO IX to his dad's old MG Metro 6R4 and he was in confident mood.

0:38:040:38:11

Rhona caught up with him just before the start.

0:38:110:38:13

David, championship going very, very well for you so far, what do you hope today from this one?

0:38:130:38:20

Yeah, you're right, it's been an excellent start to the year,

0:38:200:38:23

so we're coming into this rally in a different car than we normally use.

0:38:230:38:27

It's a car my dad's campaigned in the past so...

0:38:270:38:29

You know, we're going to go for a win.

0:38:290:38:32

It will be interesting, and if it stays dry it will make the job easier for me.

0:38:320:38:36

The car is 23 years old, the same age as me, so that will be a learning experience,

0:38:360:38:40

but really looking forward to it.

0:38:400:38:41

Euan Thorburn's going well in third place in the championship,

0:38:410:38:45

and the youngster from Duns would be determined to impress in his home event.

0:38:450:38:48

There are four different stages, each run twice.

0:38:480:38:53

Bogie and navigator Kevin Rae set a blistering pace from the start.

0:39:020:39:07

They were 12 seconds ahead of the rest of the field after the first stage.

0:39:090:39:14

50. Two right.

0:39:140:39:16

To put that in perspective, positions two through to ten

0:39:160:39:21

were separated by only eight-and-a-half seconds.

0:39:210:39:25

40. Left over crest and three minus the grid.

0:39:250:39:28

Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton were leading the chasing pack.

0:39:300:39:34

Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy were in third.

0:39:340:39:38

Jock Armstrong was 16 adrift of Bogie in fifth, with stand-in co-driver Barry McNulty.

0:39:390:39:46

And in tenth spot, it was Robbie Head and Claire Mole.

0:39:470:39:52

They were only eight-and-a-half seconds behind Thorburn in P2,

0:39:520:39:56

so a tough battle was already developing for the podium.

0:39:560:39:59

There was no let up from Bogie on stage two, increasing his lead over Thorburn by a further seven seconds.

0:40:160:40:23

He was flying in the old 6R4, although the ride wasn't without its problems.

0:40:230:40:28

I forgot how bad the car was over the bumps compared to a more modern Mitsubishi.

0:40:280:40:34

So, we had a few kind of wider moments, but, no, very, very good. Happy.

0:40:340:40:37

Euan Thorburn maintained his progress in second,

0:40:370:40:42

but knew he'd have to up his game if he was to stand a chance against the defending SRC champion.

0:40:420:40:48

We were a bit too cautious. It was OK in the open parts

0:40:480:40:51

where the wind was clearing the damp off, but under the trees

0:40:510:40:55

it's quite slippy and it's hard to judge

0:40:550:40:56

so you're always feeling for the grip the whole time.

0:40:560:41:00

We were loosing time to David,

0:41:000:41:02

so hopefully it will stay dry for the next pass and we will try harder.

0:41:020:41:04

Jock Armstrong had also improved, moving into fourth overall in his

0:41:040:41:11

Subaru Impreza in a time of seven minutes.

0:41:110:41:14

But Mike Faulkner had hit trouble and had dropped two places to fifth.

0:41:150:41:20

Last stage about half way through, just cut on a dome cut and hit a rock with the front wheel.

0:41:230:41:27

We don't know how the Hankook tyres stayed up because it certainly didn't deserve to.

0:41:270:41:32

I turned in the next corner expecting to be on the rim, but apart from backing off for a mile

0:41:320:41:35

just to make sure nothing was wrong, got a little bit of vibration in the steering,

0:41:350:41:39

but didn't slow us up so we're pleased with that.

0:41:390:41:42

Robbie Head was turning back the clock, moving from tenth

0:41:420:41:47

to sixth and he was clearly enjoying his return to the tarmac.

0:41:470:41:51

It's just all coming back.

0:41:510:41:53

It floods in eventually but I'm old -

0:41:530:41:57

it's been a while since I've done it, so...

0:41:570:41:59

We'll get faster as the day goes on, that's the key.

0:41:590:42:02

But David's flying, I mean fair play, absolutely on it.

0:42:020:42:04

Remember, there are four separate stages on the Reivers, each of which is run twice.

0:42:070:42:11

And it seemed no-one could catch David Bogie, whose lead over the field had grown to 36 seconds.

0:42:110:42:19

Six left. Into three right minus over grid...

0:42:190:42:23

Euan Thorburn was comfortable in second, but he was

0:42:230:42:26

ruing a mistake on stage four which cost him valuable time.

0:42:260:42:31

Four left.

0:42:310:42:32

Whoa, whoa. You've got it, you've got it.

0:42:320:42:35

50, crest 100.

0:42:350:42:36

Jock Armstrong was putting in a typically gutsy performance and he

0:42:360:42:43

was now in third, although there was a bit of a drama at service.

0:42:430:42:47

The oil filter split.

0:42:470:42:49

Whether the exhaust moved about and damaged it or whether it's been damaged,

0:42:490:42:52

something maybe cracked it.

0:42:520:42:54

Luckily it's just started to leak there. Taken the oil filter off

0:42:540:42:59

and not lost a lot of oil,

0:42:590:43:01

so no seizure to the engine hopefully.

0:43:010:43:02

Faulkner and Foy had regrouped after their earlier tyre problem

0:43:020:43:07

and they'd moved up a place to fourth.

0:43:070:43:10

We're knocking on the door so that's all we can ask for to go into the afternoon.

0:43:100:43:14

Robbie Head and Claire Mole were still improving in fifth.

0:43:140:43:19

Andy Horne and navigator Jim Howie were making a move.

0:43:190:43:23

They'd finished stage one in 11th position, and after four stages,

0:43:230:43:27

they were up to sixth - only four seconds behind Head.

0:43:270:43:32

David Bogie's Metro 6R4 is a real crowd pleaser.

0:43:340:43:38

And the car's got history in this event.

0:43:380:43:40

David's father John won the rally with it in 2002.

0:43:400:43:44

I took it a run last night.

0:43:440:43:46

It was the first time I've drove the car in four or five years.

0:43:460:43:49

I took it a run up the road and thought to myself,

0:43:490:43:51

this is quite good, but, no, I'll not be back.

0:43:510:43:54

Leave it to the young ones, it's a different league from me here.

0:43:540:43:58

It's a two and half litre natural aspirated engine.

0:43:580:44:02

It's old technology with the engine in the rear, the car's not good on

0:44:020:44:06

the bumps and the general chassis set up is not the best over bumps.

0:44:060:44:09

But very rewarding to drive.

0:44:090:44:11

Euan Thorburn looked safe in second.

0:44:250:44:28

However, a hard charging Jock Armstrong...

0:44:280:44:34

..was eating into his advantage.

0:44:360:44:38

And Mike Faulkner was also challenging for a podium spot, just nine seconds behind Armstrong.

0:44:390:44:45

Robbie Head wasn't out of it either.

0:44:470:44:50

He was lying fifth, just one second clear of Andy Horne.

0:44:500:44:53

Crest 100.

0:44:530:44:55

Four right at tree...

0:44:570:45:00

Dominic Buckley, with co-driver Dougie Redpath,

0:45:000:45:03

had been making steady progress,

0:45:030:45:05

but a close encounter with a hedge on stage five ruined their hopes.

0:45:050:45:10

Steady.

0:45:100:45:11

At the top of the leaderboard, there was no stopping David Bogie as he and Kevin Rae extended their lead

0:45:150:45:21

on Thorburn and Beaton to just over a minute.

0:45:210:45:24

Armstrong was still threatening Thorburn -

0:45:240:45:28

the gap now down to 16 seconds.

0:45:280:45:30

We seemed to get away in that last stage.

0:45:340:45:37

Maybe the stage before, maybe we tried to push too hard as well,

0:45:370:45:41

so calmed down and actually took time out of Euan Thorburn on the last stage, so that's all good.

0:45:410:45:45

Faulkner was having a battle royal with Head.

0:45:480:45:51

Just four seconds separated them in fourth and fifth.

0:45:530:45:56

Stage seven was cancelled due to an accident.

0:45:590:46:03

And the top five held their positions through the final test.

0:46:030:46:06

Six left.

0:46:060:46:07

So, it was a third successive win in the Jim Clark Reivers Rally

0:46:370:46:42

for David Bogie to add to his triumph

0:46:420:46:44

the previous day in the fourth round of the British championship, which he also leads.

0:46:440:46:49

Quite a weekend for the Dumfries ace.

0:46:490:46:51

Today's been crazy, you know reflecting on the whole weekend.

0:46:510:46:55

To win the International and then to get the win on the Reivers it's just mental, it really is.

0:46:550:47:00

To come here to achieve that, to get maximum points, it's just hard to sum up in words.

0:47:000:47:04

The first two-wheel drive car home was the historic Ford Escort Mark II

0:47:050:47:11

of Steve Bannister and Louise Sutherland.

0:47:110:47:13

They came in tenth spot and took a class win.

0:47:130:47:15

Peter Taylor, with Andrew Roughhead on the notes, also took class honours in his Renault Clio.

0:47:170:47:23

Finishing 14th overall in only his third rally in the car.

0:47:230:47:27

Donnie MacDonald, from Inverness, with notes-man Ian McIvor, hadn't intended taking part.

0:47:280:47:34

But the carrot of keeping his top five place in the championship was too tempting.

0:47:340:47:39

They finished 23rd, but still picked up valuable points.

0:47:390:47:43

We're now at the halfway in the MSA Scottish Rally Championship.

0:47:450:47:49

Those points mean MacDonald retains fifth position

0:47:490:47:53

in the title race on 79.

0:47:530:47:55

Robbie Head's still in fourth on 98 points.

0:47:550:48:00

Mike Faulkner's fallen back to third on 106.

0:48:000:48:05

Euan Thorburn moves into second with 107 points.

0:48:050:48:09

But David Bogie looks good to keep hold of his title.

0:48:090:48:12

He's leading on 118 points.

0:48:120:48:15

Well, at the halfway stage, it's well done once again to David Bogie.

0:48:170:48:21

Yes, he's the man quite literally still out in front.

0:48:210:48:24

-From all of us in Duns at the Jim Clark Rally, see you next time.

-Bye-bye.
