Edinburgh v Scarlets Scrum V Live Pro 12

It has been a try fest for the Scarlets in the opening three weeks.

They have crossed the line 13 times in three days. But they have been

conceding heavily as well, ten tries in total. Last week, their leaky

defence became a brick wall. To be so found no way through an Scarlets

cut loose to win 40-0. They now face an Edinburgh team that has just come

back from a thrashing. The results have been tough to predict so far

but there is one thing you can guarantee tonight. There will be

tries. Hopefully, lots of them. Scarlets of

put their Dublin nightmare behind them and are looking for

We have talked a lot about how this Scarlets pack has developed a steely

edge. It began with Danny Wilson, and it is continuing now. And the

bruises are to be thanked for that. These two are at the front of that.

Jake Ball in particular. He likes defending and he will always come

off the corner and give you the good yardage to play with. Johan Snyman,

he has good set piece players well. He has a bit more vision, more

mobile. That was a great pass, great work to go back into open field and

make a tackle. He is looking for the ball always. And he scores a great

try here. These two guys are at the forefront of the effort. And you

have got a 21-year-old, he has matured beyond his years, Samson

Lee. I'd like to see him do a little bit more around the field but these

three guys we have mentioned, plus the rest, the local lads in the

front row like Evans, who have got fantastic potential to play well for

Scarlets and for Wales, they are terrific. The incumbent tight head

for Wales, he played against South Africa. Let's move on to the

Scarlets backs. We will have a quick whizz through.

I know you have picked out a couple of your personal favourites tonight.

I think Rhys Priestland in particular is starting to recapture

some of the form that made him such a prolific play in the World Cup. He

is attacking the game, playing in the face of defenders, he has good

ability and vision to get the ball away, and when the opportunity

arises, he sees where the space is and puts the ball to Scott

Williams, who gets the ball to Liam Williams, a man on Fire this

season, a free spirit. He is fearless in many ways. He has

disciplined reissues, though, but exuberance. He is excellent at

attacking, always looking for opportunities. Very strong for a

slight man, never accept the tackle, and his overall game is first class.

I think he is putting his hand up for international selection for the

autumn. Kick-off is moments away. We are looking at a confident Scarlets

after last week and a wounded Edinburgh, where is your money

going? If the Scarlets set the tone early, and they match Edinburgh's

emotion, they can win. Good stuff, we will find out in due course. If

A warm welcome to Edinburgh. I can't remember the last time we were here

without a thick coat and a cap. For those of you that have been watching

the golf earlier today from Gleneagles, that is only half an

hour up the road, you will have seen what lovely whether they had as

well. So, the conditions are great this evening. As you have heard, the

Scarlets are in good form this season and they have turned the

first ball and a chance to attack immediately.

That was a nasty ball. The Scarlets may have struck as early as 40

seconds into the game. Cough or Mac diving onto a loose ball. It looks

as though he has got the try! John Lacey, the referee, has gone to TMO.

He made a good effort to dive for this ball. They have the advantage

of looking a couple more times, I think.

Well, he got there ahead of Tom Heathcote, but was short of the

line? Did his lament and carry him? That is what they will be looking

at. Bush might did his momentum carry him? We talked about the

turnover ball for Edinburgh, they were sloppy right from the kick-off.

No doubt, Harry Robinson got his hands on it first. Was it in contact

with the ball over the try line? Get your take measure out! Yes, try

has been given! TMO says yes, what a start for the Scarlets. And the

travelling fans are delighted. 40 seconds in, less than 40 seconds in,

36 to be accurate, and Harry Robinson gets on the scoresheet.

Look how flat the Edinburgh defence was. The bounce was awkward. Harry

Robinson, I have often admired this rugby machine. Really looking

forward to seeing him progress as a rugby player. It is time the

sharpness got back in his game, and he has started shop. -- Sharp.

That is a devastating start for Edinburgh after a dreadful

performance against the Ospreys. They needed to start strong, they

lost the ball, conceded a try in a minute, which has been converted by

Rhys Priestland, and the Scarlets go 7-0. When the TMO is involved, Harry

Robinson was certainly very sharp there, and if there is doubt within

the scoring of a try, there has to be no doubt at all, and they looked

at that, and even after three or four times, and this is what

happened. That was a good counter ruck Mac that forced the error for

the Scarlets to capitalise on. -- good counter

Some tackling issues for John Lacey. He was in contact with the other

officials. Edinburgh find themselves with a restart, seven points behind

on the scoreboard with three minutes on the clock. Aled Davies with the

clearance kick. Cuthbert kept it alive, but not much

room to play with. It was too tight angle for the Wingo. It is

interesting that Jack Cuthbert has had three starts with Edinburgh, as

fallback, tonight making way for Greig Tonks. But he ran out of space

on this near touchline. Shingler is always a reliable

line-out source for the Scarlets. One word about the pitch as well.

They were troubled here with insects last year but it looks a very good

service now. The nematodes they called them. When we watched, the

surface just broke up. They have put this hybrid service on. Suddenly now

you can play across the top of the surface, you can play good rugby. I

was wondering if he fancied a shot at the fly-half position! He was

involved three times in that movement, which shows how

comfortable Scarlets are in playing rugby. I don't think I've ever seen

Samson Lee kick a ball. A knock-on. That gives Edinburgh the

scrum. Having applauded the Scarlets, the error. Ross Ford, back

in the Edinburgh front row. This young man has to really start to

dominate his position. A man of his experience should be coming out of

man of the match awards, really showing the Scotland coach, who is

watching it alongside us from the West stand at Murrayfield.

REFEREE: I have told you to come closer and not to bind early. John

Lacey unhappy with the spacing between the two front rows.

A real battle going on between the lads nearest the camera. Meanwhile,

Samson Lee, he's a very good scrummager. He is short, he is very

difficult to scrummage against. Even with somebody with Alasdair

Dickinson's experience. A better scrum from Edinburgh. They

win themselves the penalty as the Scarlets front rows stand up. It was

the way that Samson Lee came around that scrum, stood out of his

position to spoil that position at the back of the scrum and Edinburgh

will have an opportunity to have a pop at goal. Good scrum for

Edinburgh who are looking to get their platform right to. They were

exposed last week against the Ospreys. They conceded 62 points. I,

for one, was watching that one and I felt it was a spineless performance.

That is quite harsh words. It does hurt when you say these words. But

these players are professionals, they have to adapt and get on with

it, but they also have to show the leadership. It is whether or not

they can bounce back from that. Tom Heathcote, nicely struck. That

is a very good shot indeed to get Edinburgh on the board. That will

set off some early nerves which may have crept in. Leinster lead the

Blues buys 6-0. -- lead the Blues buys 6-0.

Sean Kennedy missed the Ospreys game. And, for once, Liam Williams

misses the ball. Yes, going up too early, that was Cuthbert. He wasn't

close to the ball. He went up to challenge but he wasn't close. He

didn't time his run, and he was lucky to get away to not incur the

raft of the referee even further. It is certainly something referees are

very keen on, no contact at all with somebody off their feet. Good

refereeing, going up and reminding the perpetrator, Jack Cuthbert, that

he has to watch himself. Phillips am a number 1 hooker for three months.

Owens out of action with a disc problem. He will go under the knife

next to Tuesday probably. Rhys Priestland stepping in as

scrum-half. Two quick play, around the side. Not only was it side

entry, he came around the back as well!

That was arise smile from Rhys Priestland. He took his hands out as

if he had the ball, but he didn't. The Argentinian out of the traps too

quickly. Rhys Priestland has crept into the Pro 12 top ten all-time

points scorers. Perfectly done by Rhys Priestland,

and it restores the 7-point lead at 10-3. Let's go down pitch side. This

is a pitch, ?1.25 million worth, the same on at the Liberty Stadium, and

Old Trafford. It is a hybrid pitch with a bit of fibre. It is a joy to

run on, not that I have run on it! The man on the tannoy gives out what

the penalties for every time a penalty is awarded, so we tried that

in Wales, except we would have to say, that was for offside, did you

know that, rough? The protection wasn't good enough

and it was hacked through. They seem to play down that far touchline

between Greig Tonks and Tim Visser. On the contact areas, and if they

want to make an impression on this game, they have to protect the ball

in those areas. Drive on led by Hamish Watson, and a

good one it is as well from the forwards.

Advantage being played as they approach the Scarlets 22. The ball

is going backwards from the cross kick, which meant no advantage, they

go back to the kick from the far side. It was a shot to nothing, they

had to try something. You want to keep the ball in the hand, and the

accuracy of the kick was good. You have ball coming back that you want

to run onto, challenge the opposition defence.

Edinburgh turning down the chance to go for three. A little fortune to

favour the brave. We saw an excellent driving line-out

previously, and that may well have coloured Ross Ford's decision. More

of the same as what he will be looking for. That was won by Rob

McCusker?. Scarlets not happy about the way their number eight was

brought down in that line-out, the penalty has been given. They do not

want to have that decision reversed. Cornell Du Preez is going to see

yellow. There was minimal contact, but

Cornell Du Preez is deemed to have brought down Rob McCusker?, and it

is ten minutes in the bin. Quick taken -- quickly taken by the

Scarlets, he's not even off the field!

He lost the ball forward. Liam Williams is claiming for a sleigh. A

of mistakes from Edinburgh littering this performance. I think that

Cornell Du Preez will be very disappointed. He was unlucky, but he

did have his hands on the shirt. Maybe they have gone for a middle

line ball because it is such a good drive last time. Ollie Atkins is in

the middle, but the accuracy wasn't therefore Ross Ford. -- wasn't there

for Ross Ford. They have a one-man advantage in the scrum, the

Scarlets. Interesting formation from the Scarlets. A short ball to Gareth

Owen. Lovely inside ball from Aled Davies. They caught the defence

drifting. Strauss was over the ball that, the

referee didn't have much option. That, the referee didn't have much

option. Let's listen in to the referee speaking to Ross Ford here

because there are a few penalties unseeded. REFEREE: you have to have

a word, he has to cut it cut it out. I saw it for myself.

Ross Ford is not convinced. It is an easy three points up for grabs, but

they are going for a line-out. There is a statement of intent. The

accuracy now, everything for this Scarlets line-out with Phillips in

position. They are down the man, so power play to the Scarlets.

Williams again. Rob Evans.

The Edinburgh defence is really being stretched but is holding firm

so far. Relentless pounding from the

Scarlets. He loses the ball, Shingler, and, again, 14 man

Edinburgh survive. And you just wonder whether that could come back

and haunt the Scarlets. That is one thing the Scarlets will

not be happy with, the way they have lost possession. Too many errors

with the Scarlets. When you get your front five from Scarlets

perspective, they have been so prominent. It gives other players

that extra opportunity to get their hands on the ball, to create the

space. Good tackles coming in from Ross Ford, he has been solid. It is

the Scarlets that have conceded in the last few minutes. Shingler, four

on one hand, trying to make it available. Heathcote is getting some

treatment, but the referee is going to continue without him.

Could be a man spare on the right-hand side, into Edinburgh's

22. Waiting to support, as is Aaron Shingler. The Scarlets are getting

so much possession at the moment. Rhys Priestland again at

scrum-half, and Davis outside him. It is all the Scarlets, but they are

not adding to their 10-3 lead at the moment. The longer that Edinburgh

can keep it that way, the more confident and frustrated as a result

that the Scarlets will get. Right up to the try line, Liam Williams. Time

out again and it has gone forward. It has gone forward from Williams.

Good work by Rhys Priestland. I am impressed with this outfit from the

Scarlets because they have played some good rugby, 117 points in the

two, three previous games. Right on the try line, Lee Williams didn't do

anything to pick it up on the move, but as he was dumped on the try

line, he tried to wriggle and turn his way over.

The Scarlets with a glut of possession, but Edinburgh are

hanging on for dear life. They are counting the seconds until Du Preez

returns. Since he has been in the sin-bin, that was the last attacking

move that Edinburgh had in that quarter of the 22 for the Scarlets,

and since then, they have been camped down here. Can they turn this

pressure into some points for the Scarlets. The Scarlets trying to

drive the seven man scrum-half of it. Strauss, the flanker. This is a

feature within the scrum, the balls have seven men in the scrum. He

loses all of that momentum, all of the tightness in the scrum and

suddenly, there is one in the head. I think that they have stuck tongs

in their, he has come into the scrum to put an extra man in the scrum.

Edinburgh, delighted with their effort in the scrum. Let's go back

to fill. Scarlets, their coach, Mark Jones, an excellent open quarter,

how worrying is this not to have that score? It is quite clear that

Edinburgh are different side to last week, they are trying to hold up on

the tackle, so they drop the height and create a quicker ball and turn

them around, they have got 14 guys defending at the moment. It is a

good start, Edinburgh are well up for this game and we match that so

far, but it is early days. Is the pack going well? We're only as good

as what is provided, hopefully it will improve as this goes on. They

were 14, now they are up to 15, because Du Preez has finished his

time in the sin-bin. I felt that John Andress had gone in at an

angle, and the referee had judged otherwise. I think they can breathe

easy, Edinburgh, having not conceded the points. They were under the

cosh. A very interesting scene seeing how they are moving the ball.

The two prop forwards, Rob Evans, very much involved in the game. It

allows opportunities for other players to get involved in the game.

The one consistent thing about Edinburgh is the number of points

that they score, because they have gone 12, 13, 14, 13 in the last five

games. Gareth Owen, trying to get past. A good drive by the Scarlets

and their forwards. The Blues, back on level terms at the RDS. It is

Alan Shingler in some space. -- Aaron Shingler. Did not find Harry

Robinson as he did wish. They are racking up the yards.

A cross comes Greig Tonks and precious little angle to work from.

And the Scarlets are back where they want to be in the Edinburgh bread

zone. Rhys Priestland controlling things, pushing Edinburgh back, can

the Scarlets start to build some real, real thrust within their

possession and phase possession to open them out in the backs?

We're having a word for holding on the ground. Ross Ford, he missed the

Ospreys game last weekend. 150 league games. His 12th season, four

of those over the borders. Interesting to see how this will fit

in this season, can they make an important impression on the World

Cup? Trying to make an impact this season.

The double tackle is holding the man up in possession. Edinburgh are

going for higher tackle to try and have some good defensive work coming

in from Edinburgh. We need to keep an eye out on John

Andress for Edinburgh, because he was engaging incorrectly, think, at

an angle in the previous scrum. Joined from Worcester Warriors.

Interestingly, John Lacey has come over to the side as well to have a

look. Cheshire on Kennedy from John Barclay. That is well recovered.

Greig Tonks with the relief. Midway into their own half. Excellent play

from the number eight for Edinburgh, Cornell Du Preez, he was under some

pressure, but the way he positioned himself, he got the ball back and

then Tonks from the left peg, give some relief to Edinburgh. Into the

final ten minutes of this first half, and it has been pretty much

one-way traffic. Lee Williams, the early ball, did not have anywhere to

go. The cross kick to the first side and Shingler gives chase, but it is

too deep, easy for Tim Visser to deal with. The damage was done on

the previous possession. Williams passed on to take all the momentum

from that sweeping movement. It is all about the accuracy in this pass.

If you get that right, there are players to run onto the ball, but if

you take that off, there is no other option and a poorly executed kick.

Almost like nothing will play for the Scarlets. Two players later,

they are back for a line-out to pretty much the same place. He looks

in a little bit of trouble, Visser. This time, Scott Williams taking the

hit and again, the Scarlets complaining that bodies are lying

over the ball. Alun Davies almost breaks free, gets the support that

he wanted with a proper pass and Williams gets the try this time! It

has been a long time coming, but quick thinking by Davis and great

support from Williams giving the Scarlets full-back their second try.

A great break from Williams, look at Robinson, he was on the left from

the outside shoulder, but the pop-up pass came in and on the other side,

a good try from the Scarlets. There was an alertness there. Just looking

at the Edinburgh player holding on. Davis did so well. Look at that,

Robinson is on the left, on the right, Williams, great back-up play

by 14 and by 15. Two tries against Treviso and now, another one for

Williams, made sure that time that there was no stopping him.

Looks like a fairly comfortable kick, but the concentration levels

are still as high from Rhys Priestland. And it adds the two

points and the scoreboard is now, a little bit more like the Scarlets

would have liked, given all of the possession and the dominance they

have enjoyed in the opening 33 minutes. Once again, Aled Davies, he

was as sharp as a tack. Gareth Davies has been in great form for

the Scarlets again this year, but took a knock-on the head and is out

with concussion this week, and Aled Davies making the most of the rarest

housing opportunity. -- rare starting opportunity. Knocked on to

the Edinburgh scrum. The Edinburgh supporters here at Murrayfield have

not had enough a lot to cheer about. There has been no real continuity

within the game. They have not retained possession, they have not

had territory, and certainly, the balance of play for the Scarlets,

they have had absolutely everything in this game.

They were very happy not to concede tries with Treviso last weekend.

That would be the watchword for the remaining five at half minutes of

this first half. -- five and a half minutes.

Yet again, the front row union getting a word from John Lacey.

There is too much pressure before the ball is coming in, I want us to

get v-position and wait for the ball before pushing. You are both going

at it, that is quite you are having this problem. This is the second

time he has had to call them aside. If he is unhappy, he will just

penalised, these are the guys that are delaying the game. It is the

bane of the modern game. Very much so. He has told them to get closer

together, get their engagement proper, get on with it, restart the

game, if there are any shenanigans going on, then penalised them, John

Lacey. -- penalise. McCusker, trying to do the rippling work, but they

hang onto it. Great footwork by Sam Beard. Kennedy to Tonks. The crowd

at last getting something to cheer and get excited about. Straight

running and a great off-load from Dupre, just short of the try line.

Cuthbert, desperate tackling from the Scarlets, but there is a man

spare on the far side, and it is an absolute walk-in for Tim Visser and

Edinburgh strike back just before half-time. Suddenly, Edinburgh,

strings and patterns of play together and didn't they do well?

Sean Kennedy at scrum-half kept that movement going on this nearside when

he's scooted the ball out to Tonks. Kennedy, once again, Cornell Du

Preez could not off-load the tackle, there are always extra men out

there. I felt that all came from a solid scrum. That scrum could have

caved in, but their responsibility assured and the scrum stayed up.

Edinburgh got the attacking platform and they did well. Maybe a glimpse

of what they can achieve. A couple of years to get over the try line

and then another 20 before grounding at by Tim Visser. -- grounding it.

Well struck conversion from Tom Heathcote. And Edinburgh get back to

within the converted tries. It was interesting, I always write on my

notes, a little box and I was just about to write that little box and

73, the half-time score, but Edinburgh got it back in with a

converted try. That will achieve up. They have been under the cosh for

such a long period. But they are very much still in the game.

Kennedy, try to give Cuthbert something to run onto. Drifting

infield. Away from Strauss as well. Scott Williams to John Barclay.

Robinson. The Scarlets, quite happy to see

nine and ten swapping positions. Then Samson Lee with the carry, then

comes and dress. -- Andress. Alistair Dixon with a needless

penalty. They need to concentrate on what they have done well in terms of

scoring that try, but then, it wasn't Alistair, it was John

Andress. It must be so frustrating for coaches like Alan Solomons

there, to see the penalties like that given away when they are not in

a threatening position. Yes, alongside Stevie Scott. A better

performance from the Edinburgh line. After last week's demolition job.

They were on the receiving end of the Ospreys. I know in the seventh

game, they only have got 30 seconds to take the kick, I often think in

the 15th game, it should be one minute. -- in the sevens game, they

may have 30 seconds, in the 15s game, I think it should be one

minutes. Off the posts and away. And so, the Scarlets failed to put a bit

of distance between themselves and Edinburgh right at the death, unless

they can run it in from here. And Williams looks like he fancies doing

so, a great little off-load, kept alive, but only as far as Greig

Tonks and the ball is eventually over the fireside, and that brings

an end to proceedings in the first half. Williams is hurt himself in

the advert as well. -- has hurt. That is a disappointing end to the

first half for the Scarlets and That is a disappointing end to the

conceding a try and also in seeing Liam Williams laid low and still

receiving treatment Liam Williams laid low and still

of the field. The Scarlets having half-time.

Scott Williams, do you think you are worth more than a 7-point lead? I

think so, we need to turn the territory and possession into more

points. It was a bit too easy to let them in for a try. I think

converting in our territory, we need some points. Early scoring the

second have? Yes, early in the second half. Here is Ross with the

story of this half. The Scarlets hoping to recover from

their wounding last week, it could not have started

seconds, a great finish from Harry Robinson, but some good build-up.

Yes, we said it was important to get good possession early on, play in

the right areas. They get a good turnover. Pretty aggressive. Great

reaction to get the ball and turn over. The Scarlets have a good

turnover. Out wide it goes. A great ship through and it is great to see

Harry scoring, great for to get over the try line. A great try. Moving

wide, good hands, nice kick through and Harry has got his eye on the

ball, it is a brave, good finish. You spoke about kick-off, Phil,

about how Alan Solomons would be furious with Edinburgh last weekend

about how they would need to be accurate night and they were

woefully inaccurate in that first 20 minutes and it cost them. Yes,

absolutely, Gareth said in commentary, you can see the body

angles of the Scarlets and their commitment pass the ball is

excellent. Often it goes. What is number six doing? The early part of

the game. Shingler, a top class culture in the line-up, never eight,

keep your hands off, there is no need for that. Rob Evans carries

well. A good body position, second man in. Instead of being

disciplined, he goes off his feet and gives away a penalty. Alan

Solomons will be pulling but every Harry has got left out, because that

first 20 minutes, after last week's performance, they were not accurate

enough and the Scarlets were great way performers are the first 20, 30

minutes, fantastic. Liam Williams has very ported to watch, you can

take your eyes off him, such an exciting player. -- was very

important to watch. Let's look at the first one, what you make of

this? Great footwork to get beyond and whether he was trying to get a

miracle ball coming back and into the hands of Harry Robinson, it

certainly came off the tackle of the Edinburgh defender. He is a constant

threat. He is prepared and committed to the ball. This is his first

opportunity will stop the strength taken across the line. He never

accepts a tackle, he is prepared to work hard to get there. When that

ball is in his hands, he works hard to get his body over the line and

unfortunately did not make it on that occasion. Good reaction, the

first to react to Aled Davies's break, then power, pace, the ability

to get over the line. He has been a threat all evening. Almost got

across towards the end, made a try towards the end, but you have got to

watch him, he's a fantastic layer. We have to pay tribute to the

forwards, we spoke about Jake Ball and Snyman, they have been part of a

quality line-up, very busy on the field, carrying hard, working hard

on the fringes of defence, and the forwards set a good, getting over

the platform to provide the opportunities for the backs to try

to exploit and they are created a lot of opportunities. Running with

real purpose. Rob Evans and Snyman really topping the carrying charts.

Edinburgh have to absorb so much and defend for such long periods, yet as

half-time approached, that soft try in the end, they are right back in

this. Scarlets's defence has not been under pressure because they

have had dominating territory, but the one area they managed to get

across with Edinburgh, they showed some good football, some good

vision, both half-backs understanding that there was space

out wide and left Harry Robinson with no other option other than try

and defend the long pass, but they need to be aware of that. I just

feel that the Scarlets will start to take control and it has been tiring,

defensively, for Edinburgh. They have been put under a lot of

pressure, they have come unscathed and they are still in the game, just

a matter of time, I feel. Rhys Priestland was the other person to

watch, a lot of talk has shifted to Dan Biggar the incumbent, but this

man is quietly going about his business for the Scarlets. Yes, I

like the variety you put in his game, some great kicks, that tipped

over the top that almost led to Liam Williams going across, and that was

a great kick putting pressure on Tonks. He is prepared to take on

defenders and set the ball and even defensively, he has been a little

bit more involved, but going back to my earlier point, I would love to

see him play in the way that he has the last three games, a bit flatter,

taking on defenders and starting to control the defenders, make them

think, who were they tackle, do I make the tackle? He can make

decisions and get people running alongside him. I wonder if that is

the message in the dressing room, we will find out in the second half, it

is on the way, but now it is time to nominate your sporting on some hero

volunteer football coach won for his tireless effort helping young people

who are homeless get back into mainstream life through sport. An

inspiration to many, he was gobsmacked when we surprised him to

tell him he had won. It is amazing, I never thought I would win.

The Dragons will be looking to bounce back from their Glasgow

hammering when they welcome Treviso on Sunday. It is another stellar

line-up on Scrum V Sunday. The Scarlets head coach will tell us how

he wants to honour the Scarlets tradition of running rugby. I think

some teams turn up and want to play that way but they don't have the

players with the mindset or of that -- ability. I would rather have a

team that attacks and scored tries. Interesting guy, tune in on Sunday

for that full interview. The Blues are a way to Leinster tonight. It

was tough for them at half-time and its close. 13-9. Just the 1 try.

Rhys Ruddock crossing for Leinster. Three penalties from the boot of

Rhys Pack show. The other game going on, Glasgow 17, Connacht, seven.

They look like they are on their way to another victory, it has been a

great season for Glasgow. Phil, that Blues game, a lot of fans were

fearing what would happen after those two home defeats but they are

hanging in. A lot closer than it was last time! They are doing well. I

think they are trying new things. Things seemed disjointed at times,

and there have been a lot of change, but the more they play, hopefully,

tonight, they will get back into the game and maybe sneak a win. Briefly

on the interview, he was saying how the Scarlets have got all of those

players to play a running game, and that is his philosophy. He looks at

his players, and then he builds a game plan, is that the way to go? I

think it is. Especially when you are in hurting the team. You look at

their skill set, their ability, and you adapt the team to play in that

style. We have seen that already in terms of the performances. The teams

are on their way back out. We talked about some of the ball carriers in

the Scarlets pack. They have been leading the charge, no changes at

half-time, but Pitman is on the pitch, and he has proved a handful

this season. He is a great ball carrier. He loves carrying the ball,

he loves the physicality. He would rather run through the door rather

than open it to go through it. Good to see him actually getting some

game time and performing because he is a talent. Every chance he will

make an appearance before the end of this game. The second half is about

to kick off. The Ryder Cup highlights of just begun on the red

button. I am sure you are in in gauge to in this game so if you want

engaged to this game. Back to the commentary team.

No changes at half-time, good news for the Scarlets in particular.

Everyone is OK. The try scorer is there at full-back. 17-10, the

Scarlets lead. And Edinburgh will be quite happy that they are still

within the converted try, thinking about all the pressure they were

under. It seems very often Scarlets goat

and-9, then Proctor carries straight after. -- prop to carry straight

after. The chat of time, Phil was asking me what I thought of Rhys

Priestland. I kept my eye on him in that last passage of play, involved

four times, he started the movement by attacking the gain-line first of

all, and then varying his position and his depth, and eventually

pulling the strings and putting that little grubber kick in.

Again, lost by Edinburgh. Desperately disappointing for the

home team. They are putting themselves under pressure.

Real good scramble. Important tackle by the flanker. But it is not over

as Snyman comes again, carrying on where they left off in the first

half. And illegally stripping the ball. They are back down to 14 men,

Edinburgh, and the pressure will be immense. When you stop playing with

14 men, as we saw in the first half one Du Preez was put-in the bin, he

has been joined by John Andress for illegally stripping the ball.

That was an odd decision, looking at it for the second time. Surely, he

is still allowed to play the ball, unless he had his knee on the next

man, but the decision has been made. Scarlets may be erring on the side

of caution. Rather than go for the scrum, they go for the three points.

They want to two Squaw caution. -- they want a two score caution.

He has got his range at the beginning of the second half and the

Scarlets are ten points clear. The experienced Grant Gilchrist

makes his first appearance of the season. Just looking to see where

the opponents were looking, to see what the chances of setting up an

attack work, but he didn't have the ball under control, it was up at his

shoulder somewhere. Normally so safe, McCusker?.

It will be Willem Nel coming in. Watson makes way. Willem Nel

replaces the sin-binned John Andress.

You can just see Visser standing behind the fly-half, Heathcote. He

is a danger man when he hits the ball in those open spaces. When he

gets his hands on the ball, he is a difficult man to stop. He will not

get the chance because the free quick has gone against Edinburgh. --

Rhys Priestland going for distance. What kind of return can Greig Tonks

get on it? A banana kick, the second time. Goes into the hands of Du

Preez. Every pass was behind the man, so no

momentum, so they have reset their play.

Neither side is putting a stamp on proceedings in this second half.

Pretty sharp on coming in, John Lacey. The ball, an opportunity for

Edinburgh to move wider, they got a bit static here but you can see this

pass by Heathcote, it is off the left hand, rapping over the top of

the right, dipping down. It has been a bit scrappy, this start over the

second half. I did say the first school would be crucial. The first

one has been from Rhys Priestland's boot, but it hasn't been enough to

take away a winning situation for the Scarlets. They want to open up

that gap, make Edinburgh chase the game, see if they can break it up

and get behind them, get a chance to counterattack.

An effective drive on again from Edinburgh.

Advantage being played, offside in midfield. McCusker? comedy reached

that line he was up in that defensive press, overstepped his

mark. Good plague by their captain, Ross Ford. Edinburgh had lost the

two previous line-ups, but they said that drive exceptionally well. And

that is what got them into the Scarlets 22. This will cancel out

Rhys Priestland's early penalty at the start of the second half.

It is simplicity itself for Tom Heathcote. Let's go back to fill.

to Crosskeys. They will have to replace the divots in the players as

well as the pitch. Big derby in the Scarlets region, Carmarthen versus

Llanelli. Go and see your local club if you can tomorrow. Plenty of rugby

at all levels on the weekend. Absolutely, thank you. Edinburgh,

they got 14 in the first game, just enough to beat Munster by a point,

and 13 against conduct which was just enough to lose by a point. And

then they got a drumming at the liberty last week. # at the Liberty

Stadium last week. They have the best part of half an hour to get on

with their season. Gilchrist has put himself forward to

carry in the short time he has been on so far.

They are a man short, of course. Sean Kennedy's box kicking has been

poor, giving the ball away to the Scarlets on the counterattack. It is

a chance to keep all in hand, rather than putting it back down the field.

A little bit of miscommunication, and it good recovery by Shingler,

otherwise the Scarlets could have been in a great deal of trouble, and

Priestland was lucky to money factor the kick. And Shingler has hurt

himself in recovering the ball from the Scarlets. He was loose in

midfield, nearly put his body on the line. And that is Grant who is

coming on for Edinburgh. Scarlets might need their own replacement in

the back row. This game

feel that if the Scarlets score next, they can

feel that if the Scarlets score but Edinburgh, as

feel that if the Scarlets score of expectation. But the problems in

Welsh rugby are being sorted out, can they get their regional teams

sorted out? Edinburgh are adding to their own

downfall at the moment. A strong run back from Leonardi but good pressure

by Priestland. A little bit too quick, though.

Just going back to the state of Scottish rugby, the Glasgow Warriors

have started so sprightly, they've developed a unity amongst the squad.

I understand where he is coming from, the coach. I spoke with him a

lot last season. It is all about developing a new spirit and a new

spirit within the team. They started so well. They are losing by a single

point. This aberration that happened last year, to not take a thing away

from the Ospreys because you play what is in front of you, but there

have been patches and glimmers of the unity within this performance

from Edinburgh, but they are now under pressure.

They are trying to build their weight into this one. Alasdair

Dickinson leading the way. Still only the 1 score game. That is

something the Scarlets will be more than mindful of.

It has gone forward. The Scarlets are happy to scramble it out but

Edinburgh are showing signs they can put pressure on the defence. I would

like to see Cuthbert hold onto the ball on that far side because

Edinburgh had built some good position there.

A good off-load from Visser. Tonks, we have talked about the link

between Tonks and Visser, it is reaping the rewards. A change which

may have been anticipated at half-time. Pitman coming on,

replacing McCusker?. Pitman, who has started the last three previous

game, he's number eight. Glasgow now seem to have broken

clear from Connacht. Ospreys go to Munster this weekend,

that is a tough one for them as well.

Williams, he has run almost a hundred metres tonight. Visser,

inside the 22, so goes direct to touch. He had an opportunity outside

him to feed Cuthbert, who could have surveyed the options because he had

plenty of space on the far side to take the counterattack on. He's not

playing full-back today, but an opportunity but it is possession

given away. Scarlets, trying to be patient in

their build-up. And they have lost it. Good work by Ross Ford. Leonardi

spills it, but backwards. Very scrappy, though, and, in the end,

Sean Kennedy has little option other than play territory which puts

pressure on Williams. Williams gets away from him, just.

Enough is enough, says Aled Davies, let's get down there and keep the

pressure on. Good play by the Scarlets scrum-half, excellent play

from Liam Williams. He has shone at Murrayfield. He is an instinctive

player, the way he does things, he scored a try in the first half, he

was quick enough to get there, and always a bit of a Thorn in the

flesh. He is down injured at the moment, giving us the opportunity to

go back to Cardiff, because there has been another try in Leinster.

There sure has. Not good news for Blues fans. Leinster have scored

another try. Gordon D'Arcy knows his way to the try line, making the

current scored 27-9. 27 minutes on the clock, so Leinster are pulling

away, seemingly, in Dublin. Thanks. We have reached the hour

mark here. First time I have seen Anton

Bresler. He's very good at reminding Aled Davies in the previous line-out

to always be aware of what is happening around you. He puts

himself around. Grant Gilchrist has returned for Edinburgh now. A change

in midfield. That is Adam Warren. He was a replacement for Wales against

the Barbarians a couple of years ago. Asking too much of his players

to get on the end of that one. It has gone a little bit sloppy.

We are into the final quarter, Scarlets, the tracker on their

territory, they would be dominating, wouldn't they? There is always that

in the back of their minds. We should be safe. The game should be

in the bag by now. Edinburgh will be going, one little break, one

mistake, 1 bit of pressure, we are back in it. The crowd of 3,000... It

is a very mild night in Edinburgh. A good, solid scrum from the home

team. A good solid scrum from Edinburgh.

They could have released that ball, they could have taken the ball by

Sean Kennedy, but they have been patient and now they can play the

territory game. Tonks off his leg peg has a good boot on him. So often

now, the modern day professional will go end over end, and sometimes

you feel the spiral kick... But he has done his job. Good territory.

Edinburgh have got themselves back within striking distance. They have

a line-out on the Scarlets 22. It is all getting the parts right, isn't

it? Ross Ford has thrown a fuel use ones, he needs to nail it. -- has

thrown a few loose ones. That line-out has been a problem for

them. They last a couple of crucial one and is a bit too early. -- they

lost. The referee was playing advantage, we will settle for that

Rhys Priestland clearance kick. We spoke a few times about Gilchrist

coming up the middle, start the drive, that time, the call was to

slip around the far end of the lineout. It was all about the

communication between the lifters, the jumpers and all about psyching

the hooker. Williams, 21, the new scrum have further Scarlets. --

scrum half for the Scarlets. I do not know if it is the demons

creeping into Ross Ford's head, but it is not functioning as Steve Scott

and the coaching team would like. Grant Gilchrist, he has captained

his country, he calls the line-outs. That is better where he

took it, but you are meant to hang onto it. He found him, but the

return didn't find anybody. It was dislodged from a hand of one of the

Scarlets. Do they go for the line-out? To of the scrum? Mind

being played. -- do they go for the scrum?

Again, Edinburgh looking good at set piece, at least the scrum element of

the set piece on the line-out. A little bit of help from the friends.

A change of mind and a change of direction from Sean Kennedy.

Heathcote, Tony Visser outside him. He was isolated. Possession gone. He

was isolated, but Barkley had still run the ball further Scarlets. --

stolen the ball for the Scarlets. Heathcote was just isolated.

A couple of changes in the Scarlet front row.

Edwards is back for a second spell for the Scarlets. Rob Evans and

Samson Lee, they certainly carried their share. Pitman trying to do the

same. Jake Ball... Ross Ford, doing his best to get the ball away from

Jake Ball. Straight down Cuthbert's throat.

Tonks and Jake Ball, we identified that pairing at the head of the game

in the studio earlier, and I have been impressed with their workload

and carrying everything forward again. Rob Evans and Samson Lee, the

front five, travelling well. It sets the platform. Pete Edwards, a late

inclusion on the Scarlets bench, Rhodri Jones was meant to start this

evening, but he went down with sickness overnight. Edwards into the

fray as well. That goes off the head of Liam

Williams. Greig Tonks is so disappointed. Good height with that

kick from Rhys Priestland. And Liam Williams was there again underneath

that high ball. He has chased everything and carried pretty

effectively tonight. He carried so well. Liam Williams,

always a threat, looking to get involved. Hit the outside shoulder,

he doesn't try to barge anybody over, he tries to get beyond the man

and then tries to off-load if he can get it. A good step. Almost that a

second try. -- almost got. Jack Cuthbert as well, almost skipped

over for a second try at the end of the first half, but had the ball

dislodged. You wonder if this garden -- if the

Scarlets will still regret that period Chris Mac lets go back to

pitch side. Garan Evans, ten minutes to go, looking for that extra

scorer? Yes, tried to get the attacking pattern is better to begin

with. Just to get the territory better, so we want to play on the

22, we want to get our patterns better. Get the territory back. A

quick drop goal from Reese would be making you happy! Yes! Good luck!

The off the ball tackle. I thought James Davies had been held in the

tackle, I thought that was why John Lacey gave the penalty. Edinburgh

have got a chance here, again, they need to get the line-out right, get

it sorted, set the platform. Scarlets are putting Ross Ford under

pressure. Edinburgh, the stopped ball. Ross Ford protects. Grant

Gilchrist reattaching. Kennedy get it and the inside ball to Tim

Visser, he is waiting on the shoulders of Heathcote. Here's

isolated. A penalty coming against John Barclay at the breakdown.

Edinburgh will have a chance to attack with this drop goal for

nothing for Tom Heathcote. And with that going wide, they will come back

with a kick and... Is there a card as well? Yes, there is, the Scarlets

will finish this game with ten men and John Barclay gets sent to the

sin-bin, and what looks like a safe win for the Scarlets is now really

coming under threat. I think that Edinburgh should Gopher the

touchline here, they have got their opportunity. -- go for the

touchline. Tom Heathcote going for that corner. A power-play coming in.

This, I thought he was isolated, Barkley was straight over the ball,

you can see his shoulder sealing off that position, spoiling the quick

position for Edinburgh. No hesitation to dish out that third

yellow card of the match. First for the Scarlets and it has relieved put

them under pressure as Gilchrist takes the line-out. There is Roddy

Grant ready and waiting. Kennedy once more forwards in their first

and they Julio Blige. Grant still in possession, driven back up the last.

-- they duly obliged. Phil Burleigh barges over, the replacement centre

could well have got the try. He could have gotten the try that with

Edinburgh right back into it. That's Mac that puts Edinburgh. Time out. I

need to chat. The TMO... John Lacey was right there. I am surprised he

did not go and have a look. That was the first touchdown.

That is where he got the downward pressure. Some looks at Harry

Robinson's try, butchery that as they try, and it is confirmed. The

try has been given and Edinburgh are suddenly back within a convergent,

because Phil Burleigh has been immediately in action since coming

on. advantage of a fumble outside the

goal area. Sam Warburton scored a try, 20 the TMO, it was given, the

scorer in Dublin, 27, 23 to Leinster. The Blues are really

striking back. The Scarlets, the 14 men, they have to build their way

down field if they want to come away with a win at Edinburgh. Edinburgh

will be the ones with a spring in their step. And the man advantage,

of course. Robinson. Williams arrives, Andrey Pitman goes on the

wide arc. Rhys Priestland and Shingler just getting within

striking distance. They are building their way down the field. Williams,

that of a chip and a chase and they need to keep position, more than any

thing. Scarlets buying their time. Edinburgh now have possession. The

keyword was patience, no need to kick that possession away, not at

this time of the game, not when you are one man down. It is a funny old

game. All of that procession in the first half, suddenly, at rat at the

back end of the first half, they got within touching position. And injury

here, there has been another try and answer, what has happened, Ross?

the brother of Jonathan Davies. Another one who has spent a long

time with the Welsh sevens squad. Edinburgh, and that is a huge letup

for the Scarlets. I thought they got away on that first side, John Lacey

thought otherwise. The referee would not have penalised the driving

maul. It has been an impressive aspect of Edinburgh's game this

evening. They got detached from the initial drive. It is what you work

on on the training field, you try to take one lot of defenders out,

continue with the drive. That is the direction the drivers going, but

Lacey says it was a changed lane. James Davies in the tackle. Just two

minutes remaining. The Scarlets are now looking to see if they can get

within kicking distance, a penalty, a drop goal, any thing to snatch the

extra point. They could end up with giving away the seeming winning

position to draw the game with Ulster right in the very first game

of the season. At the moment, they are in the same position against

Edinburgh. Pitman and a change of angle, picking up the pace. It is

Edinburgh's turn to be disciplined as Steven Shingler carries for the

Scarlets. Williams to Pitman again, once again, a head down charge. Emyr

Phillips is, his opposite number, Ross Ford. Rhys Priestland is back

inside. Some support from Harry Robinson coming from his wing. The

ball is protected for Williams. Shingler, nobody running onto the

angle as he was opening. Still, possession is safely therefore the

Scarlets, still, they build, still they hammered away. Rhys Priestland,

that would be straight into the hands of Greig Tonks and nobody is

at home at the moment for the Scarlets. And do they look for the

safety of the touchline? Now, they do not, but they found it anyway.

Rhys Priestland decided to kick once again and Edinburgh have taken a

quick one. Looking to get some space. That was such an important

tackle but great support. Great support from Leonardi. Jake Ball

came through and knocked the offside position and the Scarlets have won

it back with a very important call. Much, much disputed by the home

crowd. Jake Ball did extremely well. Kennedy was caught at the

base. It was Jake Ball and then James Davies that got position. What

do the Scarlets do? The time is up on the clock, do they put the ball

out, do they try to go for the win and hope they don't concede? Well,

they have got to go for it, they are going for it. Still in their own

half. They have to be wary that it could be within kicking distance for

Edinburgh if they don't get away from there. Peter Edwards and Phil

John, both with a carry each. Rhodri Williams tied in there. Roddy Grant

get his hands on it, and this is now a big call. Do Edinburgh have

somebody who can put the ball over from all of those 50 metres? Izzard

Tom Heathcote? Not sure if he has got the legs, Greig Tonks is coming

up. Rhys Priestland, he had the opportunity, but they have come this

far, the Scarlets, they wanted to see if they could get the win for

all of the pressure they had in the first half. How crucial with that

decision be? -- would that decision be? Was at brave or foolhardy? That

is the question. Glasgow have picked up another bonus

point eating Connacht and they have continuation to their perfect start

to the season. He would go. The very last kick of the game, a huge kick

in every sense of the word. Perfect silence. Tom Heathcote, it is too

far for him to reach and in the end, the Scarlets decide, we will not be

brave again and go from our own try line and they have to settle for

another draw. The Scarlets, dominant for the first half, felt they may

well have won the game, but Edinburgh hang on in there and they

fought back and they could have won it right to the death. In the end,

neither side did. It is the second draw for the Scarlets this season.

They will come away with two points but they will also feel as if they

have lost two points and Edinburgh, after the absolute hammering at the

Liberty Stadium last week, they think they may well have got things

back on track. It will be a lift to their spirits and it would be a long

journey home from the Scarlets with plenty to think about, but they

haven't lost, it has ended all square, it has ended 20-20.

As we said, it was the perfect start for the Scarlets, a try after 36

seconds, and they looked in control for much of the first half, Liam

Williams crossing out a very good break from Alun Davies. But before

half-time arrives, Tim Visser crossed for the home side and it

looks like Edinburgh had snuck back in, but we thought things would open

up in the second half, but a change of emphasis. John Birtley with a

yellow card with ten to go, and then a cross with a cross with the hosts.

A dramatic end, but the final score, 20-20 and we returned to

Murrayfield to Jake Ball with Phil Steele.

Commiserations, Jake, that was the one that got away, that draw? Yes,

we talked about starting well, we just did not get off on the third.

We let them back in the game. A bit disappointed with how we came out in

the second half. At the end, you could have lost it, it could have

gone down the line and put it safe? It is down to determination,

desperate to win the game, the boys will be gutted from that

performance. We need to come back strong next week against the

Dragons. Thank you for your time, Scott Williams, is your knee OK?

Just twisted it, but it is all right. What were your thoughts on

the last ten minutes? We had a lot of territory and possession, we did

not come out on the second half and in fairness to Edinburgh, they kept

at it and our discipline wasn't good enough in the last ten minutes. It

lets them into our hearts and... Would you have tried to play for

that win if it came from above? The final ten minutes, the final five

minutes when you tried to play for the extra when? We have come here to

get a win, and, we will be disappointed that we had the draw,

but just have to keep building, a tough week, the Dragons next week.

On a positive, the role of positives in that first half? Yes, territory

and possession was massive. We only came out of the 22 ones and we let

them score. We will look back on Monday and have some stuff to work

on. Thank you for your time, look after that knee.

Phil, Gareth John said it in commentary, that decision to run

with 80 on the clock was braver foolhardy, which was it? Brave, I

think, people can look at it both ways, but I think they were brave,

they wanted to win, they set themselves up to win and I think

that was the mindset. Maybe a little bit naive, perhaps, but you have got

to applaud their bravery, it didn't come. An it was the decision they

made and Fairplay to them. Rob, letters look at the trike that got

Edinburgh on level terms, Paul Burley, he broke their hearts in the

end, what you make of this? Defensively, Edinburgh were great in

the first half, and that aggression came through in their play to read

the second period. They started to dominate the breakdown, the set

piece and their scrum was first and once John Barclay had gone off, I

think the momentum was almost 100% with Edinburgh. They capitalised on

that. They kept the ball tight, the driving line-out was pretty good

throughout and what they did, which the Scarlets didn't do, that was

attacked the gain line, runflat and hard. With their midfield players,

and the replacements, they hit the ball very, very flat, constantly

across the gain line. On the front foot, you are a yard or so from the

line, the opposition is down to 14 men, there is every chance of

crossing and that is the difference. Jake Ball was you want to watch at

the start, he did have an excellent game. -- your one to watch. His ball

carrying was great all day stop the way he placed the ball so quickly,

really quick ball with the props. Here, in the beginning, he gets down

early, quick reaction which led to the try. Here, that of the horrific

body position. -- a terrific body position. He played it well, his

work in the tight exchanges, fantastic. That was superb play.

Staying at his feet, getting through, throwing the ball down.

Leinster game are still going on, that is not a final score, but I

have just heard that McGrath is good again. , it is now 35, 23, looking

like a Leinster win. We cannot offer the Scarlets
