closest of victories. The Dragons had victory in their sights, but

allowed a Cardiff Blues Empire to strike back.

A huge kick. The flags go up. Now the men of Gwent must take courage

from a narrow defeat. It is a case of return of the Jedi for Lynne

Jones, once a Phantom Menace in these parts. Two sides, but only one

can prevail, who both see the light? We have had to sell out so far and

we are set for another bumper crowd at the Liberty Stadium. Ospreys fans

are sensing a turnaround in fortunes. It is Derby time in the

Pro12 and we have already had Christmas time. Edinburgh took the

spoils at Murrayfield as they defeated the defending champions.

Zebre one there Derby. 25,000 Munster fans were left speechless as

Leinster claimed a fine win. This will hurt every Munster man as he

strolls his way between the posts. The away side won in the other Irish

Derby as well. Nick Williams poaching another try. And that

defeat for Connacht ensured that Scarlets remained at the top.

It is a simple New Year 's resolution to each of those three.

The Ospreys are moving in the right direction, their season has followed

an upward curve since the end of the World Cup since in no small part to

some of these guys. They all make a huge difference when they are back

in the fold. Dan Biggar had to settle for a place on the bench

today. Welcome to the Liberty Stadium and a very happy New Year to

you all. It was an early night for both of our two guests. You have

worn the badges of both of these clubs with distinction and pride,

from what you have seen, do you think the Ospreys are turning the

corner? They have struggled throughout the World Cup, those

players adds so much to their team, they have bonded together. That win

last week, the momentum has gone further with them. No more pressure

for the Ospreys fans to win away. But the heartbreak for the Dragons,

they lost after a last-minute kick by the Cardiff Blues. The Cardiff

Blues dominated every facet. Lots of reasons why they lost that game. The

substitution, the yellow card, but for me it is the inability to score

tries. It is worse than any team in the league. If they want to progress

and move on, they do a lot of good things the Dragons, a good young

team, but they need to put sides to bed. Ultimately that is what came

back to haunt them. We have a real battle royale to look forward to. In

the boiler house, your own old position, can Ryan Leonard deal with

Alun Wyn Jones? -- Ryan Landman. He is a back row player, but Alun Wyn

Jones can match it. Ryan Landman loves the float. But Alun Wyn Jones

is a tighter second row and he is world class. He certainly is a

world-class player, Ryan Landman is a real talisman in the Dragons team.

How do you see that shaping up? It is a huge battle. Rynard Landman, a

couple of days ago against the Blues, there was talk about him

having a rest for this game. I am sure he said I want to play. He is a

machine. It is not that he plays every week, it is the level of

performance. You can lose words on what to say about the guy. Still

awaiting contract news from Alun Wyn Jones, whether he will stay or go.

Let's cross to our analysis truck and a man who has also put a foot in

either camp, former Dragon and current vice chairman of Swansea

RFC, Colin Jarvis, a happy New Year to you. I want to talk about someone

playing on the blindside flank, tell us how his game has evolved since

his return from France. Happy New Year to you as well, Dan has evolved

like the whole of the back row is evolving. Some cannot get into the

starting row for this team. Dan Lydiate, as a back row balance, he

is very strong, they are fast out wide, active, Mobile. What Dan is

bringing is a bit more menace. We can see in his game, instead of

being tucked the ball head down, he is carrying the ball, looking

around, off-loading, he ships the ball well now. He is one of those

players he has to watch out for. He is so menacing, he offers so much

more, he is becoming quite a handful and the Dragons will have a lot of

hard work trying to contain him. Dan Lydiate is one of a number of

players that you need to keep close tabs on today. We know the Ospreys

are in the market for a centre, they desperately tried to sign Scott

Williams from under the Scarlets noses. But John Matta Vesey, they

have a guy who delivers the goods week in, week out. -- Josh Matavesi.

He had a complete game for me on Boxing Day. He defended really well.

He has been at Racing Metro. You were not quite sure what the Ospreys

would get when they signed him, but he brings the extra dimension of the

left foot. They will have a huge kicking game, the Ospreys. He has

been a superb acquisition. The Ospreys are in the hunt for a new

centre, but he is good. Josh Matavesi is a real live wire.

Talking of live wires, Ashton Hewitt has really started to come into his

own. He is a lecturer, he is so sharp, a great, tough kid. The try

he scored, was fantastic. -- he is electric. Is it true he turned up to

his first training session on a BMX? He did! The stadium manager wants to

reflect on that when he plays for Wales. A great kid, the tenacity of

the fellow. That is what you want in your side. Look out for him today in

the Dragon three quarters line. A really sharp weapon. We are about to

go down to the tunnel, but I will put you on the spot, how'd you think

it will turn out today? The Ospreys have the momentum, but even without

Dan Biggar, I think they will be a bit too strong. We were speaking of

air beforehand, a strong pack. Martyn Williams will go off to the

commentary box, we can go to the tunnel. You can smell the

testosterone, what is the vibe in the tunnel? I am in the inner San

Tim of Fortress liberty. -- I'm in the inner sanctum. It was these boys

here, the Dragons that beat their opponents back into thousands ten. I

bet the atmosphere has been a potent mix of sweating and swear words

because the Dragons were absolutely livid by the fact that they lost

against the Blues last time out. Beware able wounded Dragons. I saw

their European win and they were fantastic out there. -- a wounded

Dragons. Now let's go to the commentary team. Martyn Williams and

Gareth Charles. It is a wet and windy ground here at the liberty.

Boris Stankovich and Lloyd Fairbrother back. The Tories is back

at scrum-half. Adam Hughes had to pull out, Ross Wardlaw comes in off

the bench. -- Wardle. There is Alun Wyn Jones. He leaves out the charges

and the rest of the squad as well. So many big games to come in the

Pro12 and Europe, it is rotation to the Ospreys as well. Smith and Alan

Jarvis takes his place in the front row. Jeff Hassler has recovered from

the flu that kept him out last week. When you look at the two benches,

you have the like of Ryan Bevington, Dmitri Arhip, a strong Ospreys bench

if they are needed. Andrew Brice of Ireland, just his seventh major game

and his influence could be major today as well, as could be the wind

which is blowing a gale. WHISTLE We get things under way. Another

festive derby and we have had a couple of crackers so far. The

Dragons are still reeling from their 1-point defeat, the Ospreys still

celebrating their 1-point win and they cannot gather the first

highball. Pretorius tries to put it back downfield. Alun Wyn Jones has

two clear from a bit deeper than he thought initially. Dan Evans with

the headgear. Lloyd Ashley has impressed the season, Josh Matavesi,

there is the left foot we were talking about earlier, giving them

the option and the variation to the Ospreys. Out by Hanno Dirksen, he

did not know too much about it and it has put the Dragons under

pressure. It comes to Ashley again. Sam Davies, the kind of solid tackle

they needed from Adam Wardle. A chance to clear the lines. A good

ball, still in play. Hanno Dirksen. Justin Tipuric out in midfield in

the spaces where he can be so threatening. He can get the ball

away to Ben John, the defender was in the way. It is a lot of early

possessions of the Ospreys and a lot of early tackling the Dragons. As

you can see in the first couple of minutes, the Ospreys have a good

field position from fields cakes. The defence is good so far. -- from

field kicks. Nicky Smith. Off the bench in the last three games, he

gets his first start since Round 3. Threatening through Josh Matavesi.

Plenty of defenders in the ruck, they are finding problems, they need

to break the defensive line down. They need to pick it up and get it

to the middle, suck the defenders in. Josh Matavesi did well. That is

the double hit. As the Dragons failed to clear away from the tackle

area, the first penalty unsurprisingly given the way the

game has gone, that was the Ospreys way. It penetrated the defensive

line, they were going for roll. A happy New Year to everyone at home.

What has he got this time? A little variation. Sam Davies has the

counter. Josh Matavesi, he has played a lot

of his rugby at ten as well. Boris Stankovich. Taken before the

ball had arrived. A chance at last for the Dragons to get in their

half. LAUGHTER Not taking a backward step!

A feisty one. He has put him off anyway, he has missed the kick. You

have to judge the wind, who has got this wind. It does not seem to be

affecting any of the kicks. Looking for the angle. It is

definitely with the Dragons. It was a bit windy! LAUGHTER

A lot of carrying being done by these forward selection then

-- a lot of carrying being done by these forwards. They have defended

for the entirety of the game so far. More than three quarters of the ball

in these opening eight minutes. They are narrow at the moment, Ospreys,

very narrow with the ball in hand. Again the defensive line is good,

forced that error, they have two keep their width. They need to keep

even wait, pick the targets to attack, the areas for those big

forwards to defend. Look how narrow they are. That is

it. Dan Baker is an interesting one today, he has lost his first choice

kicker, so they look to him a lot. So narrow in the attack at the

moment, Ospreys. They are different players, Baker and King, the

background, Baker in the line-out. -- the back row.

I don't see why you get that out there, what is the point in rolling

if you don't create anything, just get the thing out.

Pressure, bringing the penalty. It is hats off. Going for goal. A bit

more pressure on in this one. Did carried really well the first time.

It is a soft penalty from the Dragons. -- it carried. Right in

front of the sticks. Just the wind to content with rather

than distance or angle. -- to contend with. Sam Davies should have

nailed that. You have to turn the pressure into points and they

haven't. Frustrating in lots of ways. Josh Matavesi this time taking

the defenders on. Baldwin again. Baker arrived just in time. Sam

Davies stepped inside. The second defender that the Dragons needed.

Drifted over to the far wing. Just keeping an eye on Alun Wyn Jones.

Ollie Griffiths trying to get the ball away from the Ospreys number

eight. Davies again. He has taken them on. I think this is really

harsh, in real-time. He has penalised Justin Tipuric. He has

gone to clean out, that is a really harsh penalty. The ball is safely

out of play. Let's hear from pitch side. The wind is tricky, but

judging on what it is doing to my centre parting it is definitely

favouring the Dragons. It may be best driving the ball down to the

far left hand corner. That may explain why Dorian Jones missed his

touch kick earlier on. Thomas I would kick it a bit further into the

stand! Still come of all the Ospreys possession and territory, nothing to

show for it so far. Lovely pop up from T Rhys Thomas to

Pretorius, lovely runner, this guy. He's got to go. Just lost his feet.

Nick Scott, though, keeps the pressure on the Ospreys.

Lloyd Fairbrother. It will be the Dragons's Thoreau, it came off an

Osprey boot. -- Dragons's fro. It's very quiet here today. A fear

hangovers here today maybe! Really flat here for some reason. Yes, very

quiet. 84% of the ball, the Ospreys, in the

opening quarter of an hour. Down in the Ospreys 22 for the first time.

Rhys Thomas, still intent on driving it on. They'll have to use it when

they come to a stop. They do. Superbly done by Tipuric. Giving

Hasler the chance to run. Excellent cover tackle by Hewitt. It was the

kind of turnover that was screaming to be given out wide. Sam Davies,

that's a very good kick. Very, very good kick. Up in the air. The

full-back has left a gap, there. That's what Sam Davies is trying to

find. All the way. The wind may be swirling a bit then. This was the

mistake. A good angle. The hole was there, but he was committed to

running at Sam Davies. Great take and give by Tipuric. An opportunity

for the Dragons. Opportunity missed. Great little personal battle between

those two. Justin Tipuric we know all about, and Ollie Griffiths, he

is a huge prospect. Looking forward to see how those two go.

A lot of good sevens around in Wales at the moment. One on the bench

today. Ollie Griffiths gets his chance. The Dragons have got a

couple of decent sevens, as have the Scarlets.

Scott, in from the wing. Chips it on and gets it back to Pretorius. Good

tackle on Crosswell. WHISTLE

The pressure in the end will get the Ospreys a scrum. Everybody is

waiting for the whistle for a second. They were quite threatening,

the Dragons, ball in hand. Well, you were mentioning earlier

the lack of tries from the Dragons and I think against the Blues in the

last game was the first time they have scored a try in each of the

opening quarters in any match in the league this season. They did it

against Ulster, they dominated them by just couldn't get over the try

line. You feel that once they get into the 22 they just seem to lack

that bit of clinical edge. They scored tries, so it's difficult to

understand what's going wrong. Just a bit of a lack of concentration,

even against the Blues. At the end, two defensive errors.

Habberfield, ready to kick. Hewitt, standing good ground but he is back

up again. They have drawn the winger in Hasler. That has left the space

which has been utilised by Landman, and Pretorius. Griffiths out to Nick

Scott. Tries to give his team-mate a chase but it is too close to the

touchline. The Ospreys a little bit overenthusiastic in chasing the

ball, left a few gaps. Great box-kick by Habberfield. They

committed so many men to the breakdown. It's a good ball by

Landman. Good scramble fence by the Ospreys, they got numbers around the

ball. The Ospreys come back into this after... They have come well

back into this game. We are halfway through the first half and still

waiting for our first points of the afternoon.

And the Ospreys having to build from deep. As initially it was all

pressure down in the Dragons's half. Eventually the kick puts the ball

out of play. Jonathan. Yes, just watch the kick. You run it on here,

normal speed. It's a very good kick and they are just chasing it and

chasing it down. They clean them out. Look at that, who is there? The

winger, number 14. There he is, look. He goes on a shorter run.

Brilliant play by Pretorius. REFEREE: We've had 15 line-outs,

over. That is Mike Jackson, playing at eight. Former Wasps player.

Landman. Pretorius a game getting be off-loaded. Lovely flick up from

Landman. Some very creative hands from these Dragons forwards.

Pretorius really sharp behind them. He's a very good player, from what

I've seen of him. Very threatening, very creative. That is unlucky for

the Dragons, coming in from the side. They were just building up

nicely as Lloyd Bay brother -- Lloyd Fairbrother gave away the penalty.

Really difficult to clean out the man. Just coming from the side,

brilliant play. He's so concerned about Alun Wyn

Jones he has had to come over this side.

He gave him the chance to get over the ball are ill-equipped leave.

Dan Biggar. Griffiths just slowing it down. Break I -- by Dan Lydiate.

It is untidy. Again the Dragons get in there and slow it down and Dorian

Jones has taken a knock as well. Pretorius tries to get across and it

is Dan Evans who breaks the deadlock. That's what they've been

trying to do. Going through the phases. The initial break by Dan

Lydiate sets it up. Caught on the short side.

Sam Davies just held the pass a fraction. It put Ed Jackson in two

minds. It was a good friend. He will be disappointed -- they will be

disappointed with the defence, the Dragons. They just didn't have the

numbers. Dan Evans just opting to go around the outside. Dan Evans spends

a couple of years with the Dragons. 2012, and 2014.

Again, Sam Davies unsuccessful in the kick. Colin knows his stuff,

doesn't he? He picked out at the start. He has had a big 25 minutes,

Dan Lydiate. He carried well. We knew he was going to defend well.

The pass from Sam Davies to Dan Evans. He has run more metres than

anyone in the league this season and now he has got a second try in the

league this season, 20th in all in the league.

Dorian Jones is really struggling. The ball back to the Ospreys's 22.

The Dragons effectively a man short, as Dorian Jones is a passenger at

the moment. There he is in pain, number 22. Well, he's got to go off.

Now he will have the chance to do so. An arm across the chest.

If we just watch this now, he's running on from here. As the ball

goes out, something there. What's happened here is, this winger at the

back here is back there, so what has happened is that he has held this --

held, and this one doesn't know what to do. It leaves the gap running on

which exposes the back row forwards. Very clever play. The winger just

had to come up. Nick Scott was back, and they just had to split the

defensive linemen into two minds. That's unfortunate for Dorian Jones.

Obviously you will be honing that left-arm a good deal earlier than he

was against the Blues in the last game.

He started the last six now, Dorian Jones. He has taken that shirt, as

the season has progressed. Ashley missed it and it was a very

difficult past to take. Ashton Hewitt as to drop on it.

REFEREE: Fine, he is on that, no advantage. 12 is on that, no

advantage. Let's see if you can pick up any

news of an injury to Dorian Jones? Yes, a torn pectoral muscle -- a

pectoral muscle he is complaining about the pain with. If you tear a

pectoral muscle, and his is the right one, that is very, very

painful. I've just spoken to the doctor of the local county and he

said he was in considerable pain but we will have to wait.

Never torn a pec, don't think I've had one!

That is too near Jeff Hassler, giving Sam Davies the time to pick

his spot on the far side, but he has picked a spot the other side of the

whitewash. He definitely goes for it every time, Sam Davies. Just

overcooking it. There we are. Just a little bit too

far. He will be aware of the six foot five frame of Rynard Landman,

he had to get over him to leave himself any grass on the far side.

The Dragons winning the line-out. Same standard. That's really good.

We've got to keep that. Don't step. Approaching the half-hour mark and

just that Dan Evans try. WHISTLE

Clean our Blues? I was going to mention that but it is down to the

referee rather than the commentator's choice!

Swung round by the Dragons. He didn't fancy hooking it, where he

was, there. Shouldn't be called Hooker any more, should it? We

should change now, shouldn't we? The Ospreys with a line-out in the

Dragons's territory. 70% possession but only five points

to the good. Griff, any concerns there? Sure, what we do with the

possession is very important and the way we are attacking. We are making

them defend. Dan Evans is the unsung hero of the Ospreys back division

and yet he has carried the ball more than anyone else in the league so

far. His position on centre is good and he can beat people in the

channels. Thanks, Chris. Josh Matavesi has been struggling with a

calf of yet. It looks as though it could be eight re-occurrence of

that. Jonathan Spratt is on anyway. Their execution isn't good at the

moment, the Ospreys. An excellent position. There is that

calf. He pulled up against Bordeaux in the match if you weeks ago. It's

a nightmare, the calves, when they start going. You have to make sure

you are 100% right when you come back. Jonathan Spratt comes in at

13, with Ben John filling in Matavesi's inside centre role.

Good position to drive from. Dan Lydiate has lost his help you.

Baker attaches himself. The Dragons have to count down.

This is where the keep it tight, the Ospreys. Tipuric just in line. Same

again. Inch by inch, edging towards that Dragons try line.

Great work by Crosswell! Having a chance to move it. There was a

chance, though, from a turnover. You know, with the wind behind you

coming you think get it down and get some ball in territory, but under

pressure once again with the charge down kick. It was a bit more panic.

You expect a bit more composure with the numbers they have in the side.

Turned back in nicely by Sam Davies. Stankovich is there. The penalty

advantage is being played for the Ospreys at the moment.

Derksen. This is dangerous, right near the Dragons's try line. Left,

for Habberfield. Nicky Smith... They going to have a

go. Derksen went over in a flourish. I think a few players could have

scored there. Take that out and run like... He steps in and scores.

They've got to be careful here, the Dragons. They can't let it get away

from them. Here is the finish. He looks for the runner. It was a very

good finish. Any one could have scored any one of four in the shot

there. -- anyone could have scored, anyone of the four in that shot. He

follows it up with a try against the Dragons, the Scarlets. Look at that,

anyone could have scored really. A lot of Dragons players on the

left-hand side. He went a good deal further without the ball than he did

when he actually got the past. CHEERING

A somewhat ironic cheer as Sam Davies finally finds his range. They

will being gratingly pleased with the way they have put the distance

between themselves and the Dragons in this first half.

Carl Meyer has been given the responsibility of chasing. Dan Evans

knows there is no full-back there. A lot of ground to cover. I would keep

ball in hand there, the Dragons. They're kicking isn't great. They've

got to build through the phases now. The wind is slightly favouring the

Dragons. They will have to carry the ball in the second part because they

won't be able to kick into the wind if that is the case. When they have

kept the ball they have looked dangerous, a couple of

opportunities. It seems to play straight into the Ospreys's hands. I

would like to see them playing together, Scott and Meyer and

Hewitt. Tipuric did well to reach that line-out. Tipuric there again.

He's becoming more involved now, isn't he? Players are tiring. Dan

Lydiate is doing a lot of the hard work and Tipuric is doing just what

the Ospreys want. There is Dan Lydiate carrying again. He has lost

the ball, though. Good to see him in such good form a

few weeks away from the 6-nation. That will be an interesting

selection. Sam Warburton hasn't played yet. Tipuric has been playing

exceptionally well. I know we say that every time there is a

selection! Interesting to see what they do when Sam comes back. You

have got a Welsh back picked... I don't know how serious Toby

Falatau's injury is but it could be Anil Ospreys front row. Young Ross

Moriarty as well made a big impact last year. James Day has had a big

star to the season, but he is injured. -- big start.

REFEREE: Are we happy here? Let's Move over here, then.

So, into the final throes of the first half. A first half where the

Ospreys have certainly held the upper hand. In a boxing match coming

you would stop it now! -- in a boxing match, you would stop it now!

. Straight out to the blindside.

Hewitt is giving chase. Just lost his footing as he was trying to take

that one. He looks lightning quick, curate. He looks like such a

prospect. WHISTLE

And again the Dragons come away empty-handed, as they have done

throughout this first half. They had been under pressure all the time

from the Ospreys, who have to try 's to show for it, Dan Evans and

Derksen. Phil has some company. I know you are a perfectionist but you

are two scores to the good and dominating, are you reasonably

happy? Reasonably, I think. Two scores ahead, potentially happy.

Second half more of the same, is it? I dearly, but I think the Dragons

will have something to say about that. Here is the recapture. This is

act three of the Christmas derbies and a bumper crowd welcomed the two

teams out for what is sure to be a feisty affair. Some uncharacteristic

miss kicks from Sam Davies the Ospreys could have given them a

substantial lead but a points had been out on the park. As the first

half has progressed, the Ospreys's attacking machine has looked sharper

and sharper. Derksen with that American football style guide, two

tries in the space of a week. The half-time score is 12-0 to the home

side. Only one Welsh side he has won year in the last 21 games and that

was the Dragons. As things stand, the Ospreys looking for another

victory. As you said, eight points left on the park. Superb with ball

in hand, he is keeping the Dragons defence right on their toes as well

as with the brakes he is making, but he is leaving points out there with

the boot. A headline in the selection, Dan Biggar left on the

bench and a rare start for Sam Davies. It's been a bit of a mixed

bag. Some really nice stuff in attack. I think he's shown a lot.

It's hard when you're coming back into the side. You need a bit of a

run just to get their confidence going. That's exactly what he's

doing. The kicks, it's uncharacteristic. The second one was

quite easy by his standard. What he's lacking with the boot he's

making up for in confidence with the attack. He lacked a bit of edge in

the first 20 minutes, the Ospreys. They weren't penetrating anything.

Dan Lydiate has had a lot to say about that. Often pigeonholed as a

kicking half, Davis, but showing he has got some magic with the ball in

hand. The Ospreys attack a bit narrow but as the half has

progressed they have looked ever more threatening and it was Dan

Lydiate, the menu picked up at the top of the game, busting tackles to

make that try for Dan Evans. Engulfed said they lacked the

penetration, but they have scored two tries. -- Ian Gough. We will see

the two attacking players, hitting the back row up. Lydiate runs

through the defence and he creates so much confusion that the process

breaks down in defence that the Dragons. As the clip goes on, we see

a wing who is in two minds whether he goes in or comes out, he does not

realise he has a full behind him ready to take the last man, the next

thing you know you have done at them through the middle and it is an easy

five points that the Ospreys, but it is all about how they built to that

using the two back rows and marching forward. We talked at the beginning

of the programme about how the Dragons have looked good in attack

this season but failed to convert opportunities, bottom of the table

in terms of tries scored. They have looked very good in attack and the

man who has been the focal point has been Sarel Pretorius, very lively.

Yes, I was a critic, Charlie Davies played superbly well against the

blows, but Pretorius when he has managed to get the ball and the

territory that they had, he has been at the heart of everything decent

for them. He is making people honest, right at the forefront of

everything. You cannot stay off him, he knows that he's a threat. -- they

know. He has not become as effective as he could be. Definitely

threatening with the ball in hand, really quick on his feet, lovely

footwork and good delivery as well. Let's speak to Colin Jarvis, you

have been looking at the Dragons attack, if he is such a catalyst,

why are they not converting the opportunities into points? One of

the problems they have got is when they are attacking it is a lack of

penetration and the lack of go forward, you need to be on the front

foot, you need to be making the yard across the gain line and when URS

scrum half with someone like Pretorius, such a live wire, if you

are beyond the gain line, there will be so many gaps. Another angle of

Dirksen flying over, and American football star, he certainly enjoyed

that one. The first of spray drier, Dan Evans exploiting the winger's

confusion on that occasion. -- Osprey try. The second one was they

were going through the phases and a gap will appear as it did. If we

look at this, we can see how Dirksen gives the fly half a bit of a nudge

at one point to same out of the way, this one is mine. But the Dragons it

was a bit of a breakdown in the process. As the Ospreys are

building, you just see two defenders, I think it was TRT and

Oliver come in. Dirksen spots the gap, the scrum-half could have

scored, but it is exploiting the Dragons's failure to stick with the

process and marking up the pillars along the fringes. As we have come

to expect, the Christmas derby has served up some real festive treats.

this is what it looks like. Who will make the first move? What a start

for Wales! Brilliant work from Lee Williams. Ireland are the Six

Nations champions. The world champions have been downed in

Swansea. Josh Matavesi has won it! After losing Rhys Webb in the first

half, it could be disastrous if they lose Leigh Halfpenny for the World

Cup as well. Yes! Yes! What a start to the season for the

Scarlets. A treat for the ladies, Griffiths in his pants! Rhys Webb

featured prominently in that montage and fittingly he is down on the

touchline right now. Congratulations on your contract, it is great news

that you have signed, what makes you put pen to paper in the end? I enjoy

the club, I have mates here and I want to do the best I can to put

myself in the best position to play for my country as well. I will not

give that up easy. I am happy to get it done. What is the latest on the

injury? Back up and running now, just going through a preseason.

Trying to find my lunch from somewhere! It is all going well.

When do you think you will be playing? It has been talked about,

the beginning of February, but I did ask them if they could scrape a few

weeks off of that and they have said yes. I will take each week as it

comes fitness wise and see where I am. What about the Ospreys? There is

a feeling they have turned a corner and then starting to build into

Europe. They have had some great results in Europe and there is

confidence in that. They have certainly shown in the last two

weeks that the derby matches are tough matches and they get the job

What a Christmas present for Ospreys fans, Rhys Webb signing to stay at

the Liberty Stadium. Alun Wyn Jones next May being? There he is leading

his team out for the second half. The Dragons are already on the

field, -- maybe? The Ospreys have won 22 of the last when G1, rather

21 of the last matches they have played. It could be another victory.

There has not been much in terms of fire for a Welsh derby. We will

return to the commentary team in a moment. The Dragons cannot get

enough ball in the territory of the opposition, then they need to get

the bonus point. If they can get a bit of possession, then hopefully

they will make a bit more of a game of it. The whistle has gone, let's

go back to the commentary team. The Ospreys may not have set the world

alight in the first half, but they did more than enough to secure the

lead. They will be hoping to build on it. We will see more of this from

the Dragons. If the wind is against it, they will have to keep the ball

in hand, that is what they had to do. They have to not kick it away

aimlessly. Nice hands from Jackson. Looking to

free his hands, could not quite do it, Ashton Hewitt is lurking on the

wing. Ed Jackson has started it all off, taking them into the Ospreys

22. Crosswell was there. Just marginally forward. I think Lloyd

Ashley took a bang there. In the tackle. Same old, same old. Get in

the Ospreys 22 and a basic error, a basic knock-on. A real basic

mistake. So frustrating. Yes, the three of them got injured there.

Just watch this. A clash of heads. I think three of them. Yes, Jarvis. I

think Lydiate has come off worse of the three. Hopefully they are all

OK. That is Aaron Jarvis, having a bit of treatment, that is Dan

Lydiate. Hopefully this is just a check, moving his arms. He has got

caught right on the Temple, hasn't he? Good hands, good play with the

Dragons. They dragged Hassler in. He just tried to get his arms under the

target, didn't pay? Just couldn't get his hands-free. -- could he?

Jarvis is going off after the knock of heads. Just the ten minutes. They

will have to go for another assessment. He has recovered

He needs to go off and get it checked. I felt like that this

morning. He is up and on his feet. He will

have to go and get it checked, certainly. They have got James King

on the bench. You see the winger just went early and he gets the

ball. Then Dirksen comes in. The right-winger. Yes, Lydiate is making

his way to the touchline. He looks all right. Good to see Lydiate

walking off. Not that it is good to see him going off, it is good to see

him walking! James King. Moving into the Osprey packs.

Dan Lydiate is staying off. Jarvis may be back. There is no point in

risking it. Since the referee said the scrums have been going well, it

has turned into a shambles. He is not happy at all with that. He

thought they had disrupted it fairly, no, says Andrew Brice. He

was holding his arms out. Tight head, joined the Ospreys from

Exeter. Good work. Skidding along the turf

into the hands of Carl Meyer. They choose to go aerial again. They give

the ball away, Habberfield has to come a long way round. Dan Evans

chooses to put it down field. Good tackle.

Now it has got to go wide again. Beautiful play by Sam Davies!

Support from his left hand side. He takes it to the 22. Then Dan Evans

arrives. Baker. There are plenty of black shirts to the left, that is

the way they are going for the Ospreys. Took the momentum out of

it. Nicky Smith. Certainly Sam Davies's break deserved a better

finish, it may yet come. Great hands by Spratt. He has just kept it

alive, Dirksen is there. Habberfield get it away. Just short of the line

again. Looks left. The ball spins forward and the Ospreys will be

kicking themselves for not completing that. Usually so clinical

in those areas. Their numbers on the right-hand side, they were watching

the inside runner. He runs between 2/ that is a beautiful step. Leaves

Tories for dead, he is away. Unfortunately no support, Dan Evans

gets there, what a brilliant break with Davis. -- Davies. Chip off the

old block. He is appreciating what the boy is doing. I don't think he

He was a tremendous footballer mind. He was. He did not like to get in

tackles, that is what it was. Good run. Back to Jackson. The rain comes

Handling is going to be increasingly difficult. It is so difficult to

chase this game. Go left again. Off-loading from Sam Davies. Scott

Baldwin has stayed down for the Ospreys. A bit over ambitious, there

was no need for that then. It was America will pass. He could have

thought that Nick Scott was going to come up and spot blitz him. A triple

more numbers around. A neck roll is what it is for. We have not seen one

of those since the World Cup. The line-out for the Ospreys is just

outside the 22. Ian Gough, some solutions being made, what you make

of it so far? Conversely to what happened last week, the Dragons were

playing very well, they brought the finishing game off, but it did not

go well, this time they are struggling. Charlie Davies did well

last week, Nic Cudd is making the most turnovers, they are just trying

to struggle back into the game. They are hoping to have a bit more about

an effect than they did last week. The next point is crucial, if asked

rays get it, it is game over. -- if Ospreys get it. They are winning the

kicking game. You have to try and get a counterattack going. The

kicking game will be harder. It is against the wind. They have to have

the mindset to carry ball and counterattack, the back three have

got to work together and if the back three know they are going to

counterattack, the back row need to get back in. If you beat the first

man, get some lament going. They are just not doing anything to get back

into the game. They just seem to be waiting for an Ospreys mistake

rather than creating something themselves. They have two back their

ability. You just feel they have nothing to lose, they play and they

scored tries. They need to bring that the Pro12, get some scores. --

to the Pro12. Ospreys more than happy with their defensive kicking

game. He has taken it back in. Just stepped in in time. A close call.

There will be a substitution, Scott Baldwin got injured earlier and is

being replaced by Sam Parry. Let's hear what the Dragons coaching team

make of it. Kingsley is with Phil. We have played a bit in the first

half of this game. The rest was not consistent. We have gone into the

first of, but Italy we have gone into their half, we are better now,

we just need to get a score, get a chance, we are still in there, it is

not a massive score. We just need to keep playing down here, a lot of

kicking going on from both teams. I feel we can score if we can keep the

ball. What about summoning up the spirit of Europe? That was really

good for us as has been reported and you were over there with some really

good performances from individuals. Five days ago we were disappointed

to lose in the manner we did against Bruce, a tough challenge against the

Ospreys. They are a very good side, our own errors have let the Ospreys

have the 12 point lead. Thanks for your time. They've still

got 25 minutes, plenty of time left for the Dragons. But they haven't

really looked like scoring. He slips clear. The game being

played in the middle third. A change in direction, change in tactics from

Sam Davies. I think they don't need to chase the game, do they? If they

get one more try, they might go for the bonus point, but I suppose the

Dragons have to chase the game now. Screech. A quiet afternoon today

Trying to hold up Alun-Wyn Jones. They have now managed to win

themselves a scrum. Having a chat now! He wouldn't be

happy with that, the referee. "Are You sure that's the right decision?"

Three quarters of the game gone and the Dragons yet to register their

first point. What can they possibly can sure up

in the remaining 18 minutes? One try and they are back in it, that's what

Ben Kingsley was saying. If they are 12 points down, they've just got to

try something. They're not going to win the game by just keeping

possession or giving possession back to them. Have a go, have a crack.

That is the first scrum penalty the Dragons have won. Like field

position now. Good kick, win the line-out. Try and keep possession

for a bit. That is a good kick, that is. That

will do, very good kick. Came over last year. From South Africa, joined

a team and then was given a Dragons contract.

Four-man line-out for the Dragons. Jackson just on his shoulder,

waiting for the off-load. Now then, do you want to try and get your

first three points of the afternoon from here? The players want to go

for the corner. I think I would be disappointed with

that kick. He had the opportunity to go for the five metre line. You've

got to try and go for that five metre line. A little bit too far out

of the catching drive. Try and keep possession now full is top build

momentum, go through the phases. The Ospreys don't contest the line, they

give the Dragons the chance to go for the drive. Jackson has the ball

there. They are going at a fair old pace towards the Ospreys try line.

Excellent play by the Dragons, they want to go all the way. The referee

has a close look at Jackson committees claiming it. The Dragons

think they've got there. From the ten metre line... He knows he's got

it, doesn't he? The reaction of the player says it all. Well, that was a

very, very effective place. There is Jackson. There is the line.

They come into contact? She looks shorter there, doesn't he?

He is allowed a place, of course. He is allowed to place him. Does he

plays it the second time? That looks OK.

Sort, there, isn't he? He needs to place it immediately. Every

interpretation of immediately is different, isn't it? This looks

it's a try. I think he is on the try, -- on the line, I think his

momentum is taking him. He has got the try and the Dragons are back in

shape and kept their patients. That is a very good kick from Jason

Tovey. And that puts the Dragons back within a try. That does make it

interesting. All the possession and all the territory. Got to turn the

that? They had to wait over an hour for their first score, but it has

put them right back into the mix. Missed five acre and hacked on by

You expect a long kick which is what the Dragons have been doing all game

Here comes the Dragons drive again. He did really well there. Jackson,

with support. Time now for the Dragons to exert some pressure.

Davies. Not quite the communication, but Landman was there to pick up the

65 minutes but they have let the Dragons back into this one.

OK, time off. No, it's not a good hit. I'm coming on this side now. We

had a discussion about ten minutes ago and we're not going to blame the

conditions. I suggest you get your feet further forward and you hit

higher, otherwise you force me into making a decision now. Let's go.

Davis gets the ball in at the second time of asking. Jackson with the

pick-up. He has played well, actually. Nick Crosswell has become

more prominent as well, as the Dragons have gone more onto the

by the Ospreys. I think from memory that is the first penalty going to

the defensive side in the breakdown. He has let the attacking team win

the ball but I think this time too many numbers for the Ospreys. Jason

Ryan Bevington on for Nicky Smith. Elliott Dee in on for the Dragons

skipper Rhys Thomas. Nick Crosswell is also learning that he is going to

be replaced by Cory Hill. Roberts sends it downfield. Superb

take by Ashton Hewitt. Dan Biggar thought he was taken out previously.

Ross Wardle. Scott gets it on. Lovely ball back inside of Jackson.

The Ospreys have got much more of a fight on their hands than they

thought, the way they dominated the first half. Hewitt. Well, he didn't

engage any defenders then. They had the numbers but they just didn't

engage the defenders. You have to hold them a little bit. The ball

across field. Straight out. Dan Biggar is in the referee's ear

again. He shepherded him away from the high ball to allow the Dragons

to counterattack, he is not happy at all.

Let's go back to Ian Gough. The try that the Dragons got and they got

it, how much confidence will that have given them? It's amazing the

difference a try makes. They have not looked lethargic but they have

looked like they have been playing in quicksand. I think that was the

first penalty the Dragons had in the Ospreys half. It was a well worked

try. The Ospreys stayed down and didn't compete in the air. It has

given them a resurgence. They have played with a lot more zip about

their play. The Ospreys are looking worried after dominating the game

for so long. It's certainly not over yet with six minutes remaining and

just five points between them. It's not just the Dragons's/it is the

influence of the way the backs are playing as well.

Roberts, backing away from Jackson. He has forced him over the

touchline. It is good work by Ed Jackson. The tails up, the Dragons.

They are all coming in. If they hang on in, they can sniff a result.

James King just a bit too honest for me. He could have kept him from

getting to Martin Roberts. Star Wars!

CHUCKLES Landman, slips it back to Jackson.

Charlie Davies wants runners and gets Ashton Hewitt offering himself.

Both these Dragons scrum-halves have been very lively in their different

ways. Davis that bit more physical. He had a big game against the Blues.

A real threat. Davis takes on the defence again. Gets them on the

front foot thanks to Cory Hill's support. Up to the Ospreys's 22.

Davis picks out hill again. Fresh legs working for the Dragons here.

Good defence by the Ospreys. They know that one mistake could let

the Dragons in. Brok Harris driven back by Baker. The crowd has come

alive now. Ross Wardle. In the arms of Tipuric. Jackson.

It is from side to side at the moment for the Dragons. They are not

getting over the gain line. Hill. They need to be patient. Maybe get

in the corner again. Ashton Hewitt looking to pop up anywhere he can.

Confident defence from the Ospreys. Cory Hill certainly wins a couple of

metres. Alun Davies complaining he can't get his hands on the ball.

Hill saying have a look at it, refs. It must have been illegal.

The referee doesn't want to know. Craig Evans didn't see anything. No

change for Cory Hill. There is the break. From his body angle, he's

lost that, hasn't he? He's lost it. Jonathan, your decision for man of

the match? I think it's been a scrappy affair. Sam Davies has

played exceptionally well. I think Ed Jackson has played well, and

Alun-Wyn Jones, as ever. For me, for the first half performance, Dan

Evans is my Pro12 Guinness man of the match. There he is. 121 metres

today, to add to a growing tally. More than any other player in the

Pro12 this season. He has been a great signing. Great footballer,

great kicking game as well. Nine tries in his two seasons for the

They looked as though they may well have weathered the storm.

time that they don't really have. You don't want the referee talking

Two of you, come here. We're not having this conversation with two

minutes to go. Do you understand? Take the pressure off, let's get our

feet underneath. OK, let's go. I think you'll find you are having

that conversation! It's not a conversation if there is no one

talking. Crouch. Bind. Set. So, this is the

final minute. They have applied the pressure late on in the game. Thanks

to that penalty, the Ospreys looked to have survived. One clearance and

one line-out should do it for them. Let's hope it's not another peck.

Both these teams are still in their European competitions, some big

games to come in the Pro12 as well, a busy old time just ahead of the

Six Nations. 17, Phil Price, not driving in

straight. Still down on the far side. Aaron Jarvis is coming on for

what should be the final line-out, given the way things have gone, the

Ospreys will be glad to get the ball off the park and get back into the

training room and notch up the four points. Not a classic, I think we

were spoilt on Boxing Day with the quality. A bit of a hangover today,

isn't it? A couple of good derbies a few days ago. The Ospreys are OK,

they got the win, against Leinster next week. I don't why... It does

not look too good. He does not look too good. I hope he is OK, they were

looking for a stretcher to come on. Not rushing on actually, the

stretcher boys. The Ospreys after their slow start

the big bands have come back, they are putting a few wins together and

they are slowly getting back to the top six, the top four where they

want to be. I cannot believe, this is the first time I have ever seen

this, where a second row has come on where there are 86 seconds gone.

What is the point of that? It is 30 seconds after full-time being of

substitution. Dmitri Arhip is stretchered off. I hope he is OK.

That will be a bit of a damp enough. -- dampener. They have not scored

any points in the second half, the Ospreys. They managed just enough in

the first half when they themselves kept a clean sheet. Leinster to come

next week, that will be a challenge for them. They are improving as the

season is going on. A tough period now. Rory Thornton gets his

fingertips to the ball. That is what he is therefore. The Ospreys have

done an offer. It is the eighth win in a row against the Dragons.

WHISTLE The Dragons fight back in the second

half to get a losing result. The Ospreys continue to climb up the

table. Two first half tries just enough of them. A bit of a

disappointing game, but the Ospreys will be happy to get the points in

the bag. A bit scrappy, but a good Christmas festive period for the

Ospreys, two Goodwins, good RVs. -- good wins, good victories. They

looked threatening. It is a good second-half performance by the

Dragons, I just feel they should have brought the ball back a bit

more more than the aimless kicking they did. Two wins. It has been a

good Christmas and New Year period for the Ospreys in terms of results,

a thrilling one at Scarlets and a hard-fought one at home to the

Dragons. They have got to wins and that is what they would have wanted

initially. Let's hope there is not too much but price to pay, battered

and bruised bodies, some injuries out there as well. A couple of

important games to come in the Pro12 and in Europe, they will want a

strong squad to continue with that. It has been a disappointing game in

terms of the rugby, but not result for the Ospreys, have hung in there

with the Dragons to beat them 12-7. Not quite the thriller minute

encounter that the Boxing Day derby was. Another victory for the

Ospreys. Dan Evans crossing with a try in the first half and Hanno

Dirksen notched in the second. That surprisingly was it in terms of

points scoring for the Ospreys, they did not score a single point in the

second half, the Dragons crossings are just the one try, 12-7 with the

final score. The Ospreys defence holding firm to claim another

precious win. Their third in a row. Things very much on the up. They

have climbed to places as a result of the victory up to sixth in the

top part of the table. Closing the gap on those in the top four. The

Ospreys rebuilding their season game by game. We can cross straight to

the touchline, Dan Evans is with Phil Steele.

Another 120 metres you carried, how did you enjoy the game? It was a

good start, a bit frustrating. Happy to get a victory in the end. How

difficult weather conditions with the rain in the second half? It was

difficult for all the kickers. We dug deep with the defence in the end

and we were happy. It is five league wins on the trot, Leinster next

week, do you think the corner has turned? Yes, we had a season where

now we have built up some amends, next week is a big game. Good luck.

It just went a bit scrappy. We dug in well and we got a win. You made

back playing, I have not been starting recently, it has been a

good competition within the group. They worked the Dragons, they did

not lie down, they had you on the ropes. Yes, it will always be tough

It is good when you see that the team take something from the

training paddock and they will back themselves. What happens with this

performance, he got over those misses, the early kicks at goal.

Give us your impression of this young man and how good he is and how

confident he is with the ball in hand. I don't think... He was a

threat today with ball in hand. He is a good player. A great break,

unfortunately they couldn't finish it off. He will be disappointed with

the kicks, but he has a huge future. It is interesting about whether he

stays with the Ospreys, I think he is good enough to be a first choice

somewhere. Let's get back to Colin Jarvis. Not many standout

performances today, conditions put paid to that. No one was able to

really shine, but Hanno Dirksen looks like a man with a point to

prove, he has had to work his way back into the starting line-up with

long periods of injury, no one can accuse him of not looking hungry for

the ball. Dan Evans was the standout man, but Hanno Dirksen put in a lot

of work. When coaches they be busy and get into the game, that is

exactly what he does. -- when coaches say be busy. He is quite

menacing, taking into tackles at a time. Maybe not enough gas there,

but he keeps the ball alive. Even collecting the ball is that people

will dribble through for him. He saw of weakness and around the fringes.
