Scarlets v Dragons Scrum V Live Pro 12

There is a real buzz at Parc Y Scarlets. The team are having their

best ever run inappropriate of, the fans are wondering where it might

end, they are top of the table, unbeaten, and last week they served

in a thrilling finale. That is the penalty. They have got

to go now. It is asking a heck of a lot from there. It is all down to

this one. Two minutes into stoppage time. Steven Shingler.

It is struggling. It is struggling. It is struggling. But it has got

there. And it is joy at Parc Y Scarlets. It is five wins in a row.

The Scarlets keep their 100% record thanks to Steven Shingler.

Tonight's opponents are the Dragons. It is the first Welsh derby

of the season and they arrived with their star player in tow. Taulupe

Faletau's moved to Bath was vetoed by the Welsh Rugby Union. He will be

hoping to inspire his belated team-mates. They arrive with just

two wins under their belts and they have not won in Llanelli since 2007.

But they are the second highest of the wash weakens in eight plate. The

Scarlets remain the only unbeaten side, sitting pretty at the top.

Good evening and welcome to Scrum V from Parc Y Scarlets. I am joined by

former Wales and Dragons back row forward, Colin Charvis. Is this a

genuine renaissance we are witnessing at race macro? It is

great to see them have that unbeaten start to the season. They have

started unbeaten, it is how long they can keep that going for. The

Dragons are the visitors tonight. Taulupe Faletau is there. Always a

lot of scrutiny on that man, more so tonight. Will that have a

galvanising effect or potentially a disruptive one? Any player of that

quality coming back from the World Cup is going to bolster the side but

all the players know they have still got jobs to do. But Toby is a good

guy. He has been at the Dragons for a very long time. He will just roll

up his sleeves and play as well has he usually does. He never gives less

than 100% and the same can be said of Sean Holley. You have witnessed

most of these victories so far this season at Parc Y Scarlets. They have

got a pretty celebrated backline, several of them injured at the

moment, but it is one of the unsung heroes you have paid attention to.

The Scarlets have a history of bringing young players through and

there is a young man who came off the bench last week I am looking

forward to seeing start tonight. Tom Williams, brother of Lloyd Williams.

When he came on last week, things began to happen around him. Solid in

defence, and some players start to have an X factor about them. It was

great to see him involved in both Scarlets tries. This was not perfect

by any stretch but it is great to see him at this end of the field. He

rode his luck on this one but it was a crucial score. I am keen to see if

he can do the same tonight. But one area they will be looking at tonight

is the line-out. Nearly 50% of the time they throw to the front so

sides mark-up that area or they give them the space and then shut it off

at the last minute as Munster did last week. Poor rolled Ken Owens was

on the field last week and lost six line-outs for the Scarlets. They

shortened the line-out and the ones they did not win, the possession was

poor. But Lyn Jones and Kingsley Jones are wily characters so they

will be looking to disrupt the ball. It is what I miss about Welsh

derbies. It is a coaching battle as much as anything as well. There is

definitely a competitive rivalry between the sets of coaches. Both

sets have been working hard off the pitch. It is fair to say the

Scarlets have laid the gauntlet down and taken it to a whole new level.

The question is, who looks better on television? Wayne Pivac caught up

with Phil Steele a few moments ago. Well done to you for your two year

extension on your contract. Great news for you and the Scarlets. A

great start to the season but how much does form go out of the window

because it is a derby? Absolutely. We know the Dragons have come down

here looking for the points and only one team can come away with them.

Hopefully we have done enough work this week to cross the line. Not

such a good start for you but you have got Taulupe Faletau back after

all the hullabaloo. How great is it to have him back and what effect

might that have on him? Toby is a simple fella who just wants to play

from -- play rugby. He is back from the World Cup and he just wants to

play rugby for us. You could have a father and son playing tonight. What

are the chances of the young lad getting on to play with that? He is

on the bench to do a job so hopefully he will get on at some

stage. Let's hope it is a great derby and a good advert for Welsh

rugby. In case you are wondering who Phil Steele was referring to, it is

Regan King, whose son Jacob Cowley is on the bench and may be making

his first serious appearance. -- senior appearance. The first Welsh

derby of the season is about to get under way. Lots at stake for both

teams. The Dragons try to end a miserable losing run down West and

as well. Taulupe Faletau will be the centre of attention. Team-mates with

Ken Owens and some of the other Scarlets in the World Cup just a

short time ago. And now, in this first East, West Derby of the new

season, rivals. Samson Lee rested so Peter Edwards

Shingler back in the back row which has played so well for the

Scarlets. And Jake Ball and Lewis Rawlins partners in the second row.

Tom Williams that Sean Holley was talking about on the wing. Hadleigh

Parkes joins countrymen Regan King in the centre. Harry Robinson back

for the first time since next jury. And on the bench, 1 name which

stands out. Almost as much attention as Taulupe Faletau, Jacob Cowley for

the Scarlets, the 19-year-old son of Regan King. Will we get a father and

son combination for the first time in the Pro12? Ben Whitehouse, and a

band coming Welsh referee, in charge this evening as rain, on cue, start

teeming down. Steven Shingler, whose last kick last week settled things,

starts things with his first this evening. A big hit by Jake Ball on

America. Were there any arms involved is the question. And as the

Dragons put the ball safely out of play, let's have a look and see what

exactly took place. He starts running across the field, outside

the first offender. And he gets walloped by California. Ken Owens

going low, Jake Ball going high. Welcome to Parc Y Scarlets fought to

loop a valid towel. And welcome as well not just to Jonathan this

evening but Martyn Williams alongside that this evening. I did

say you are looking forward to one battle at number 7 where it is Nic

Cudd against James Davies. It should be a fascinating battle. That is the

other flank, Aaron Shingler, driven back in that tackle. Jake Ball puts

his big frame to use with the ball rather than without it on that

occasion. Carter steps back inside as the defence comes up. Jefferson.

The deft hands of King. That is an easy outside break for him. He picks

his head up and looks whose there. Ken Owens. The Scarlets taking the

game to the Dragons early doors but the first battle on the floor one by

Nic Cudd. Did not release. He was the first

man into the tackle area. He is not the tallest of players and

that always helps. It is always a race to get low early. There he is.

That is a simple in and out. He sucks the other defender in. He

clearly released there. The attack were going to hide to clear him out.

Adam Warren, a former Scarlett. Easy for Tom Williams to deal with.

You have got to be competitive for possession. That was a nothing

kick. I don't think the coach will be happy with that. It was well

covered by Tom Williams. It is going up. You were quick then. How did you

know that? Greg Hands by Carter and King.

Fair play, given the conditions, both teams giving it a go.

Rhodri Williams using the touchline very cleverly. He knew it was going

to be a close run thing so he made sure he had that one fought over the

whitewash when he took it. This is going to be an interesting

part of the game for the Scarlets after last week. Goes to the tail to

Jefferson. He was not there last week so he was not a line-out

option. Brilliant by Nic Cudd. Going back to the line-up, the Scarlets

use Aaron Shingler more than anyone else at the start of the season and

he was a huge loss last week. That is a great steel. The only

thing is, when you know the play is on, you have to think that the

Scarlets back row should get their first because they know what is

going to happen. So often the unsung heroes, Nic Cudd.

Just one outing as a replacement for the Scarlets in his time down here

four years ago. A local boy. But he has made that seven assured his now

with the Dragons. Andrew Gilroy has scored a try for Ulster very early

at Munster. Interesting that seven for the Dragons, Ollie Griffiths,

who was sensational last year for the Wales Under 20s. A different

sort of player to Nic Cudd. Very dynamic with ball in hand. A nice

option to bring off the bench. King not chancing it but the side

but has found Aled Thomas at fullback. A nasty one for Dorian

Jones to deal with but he has done so well. A very good kick as well.

He did not have much of an angle and to get it to the halfway from there

is a pretty decent return. Jonathan. On this, you have got Regan King

against two forwards. You have got one there, marking that. He has got

to try and get this guy. He will go in and out and leave him down there.

That is easy when you can spot it. Brilliant pass from King to Aled

Thomas. He has got such an array of passes. Always looking to create for

someone else. He makes it look so easy as well. Plenty of time on the

ball like all great players. That is just holding your depth and giving

yourself time. Composure as well. He does not panic. He knows he is

probably going to get hit. The good thing is, Aled Thomas knows the pass

is going to be there so he can keep his depth as well.

There was a chance to attack but not any more. They have got to scramble

back just to regather possession on halfway.

Perfectly judged in the end. Ashton Hewitt not sure whether he was going

to commit or not. Hoping it was going to go out on the full. Eight

and a half minutes gone and it is both sets of defence winning at the

moment because there is a lot of kicking happening. It is not an

aerial battle, just ticking for position really. If anything, the

Scarlets are dominating territory and possession.

And that slippery surface is always going to make it difficult to keep

control. Jefferson, I think this happened

when Nic Cudd went for the charge down. I think he stood on his foot.

Any good openside would on an outside-half. These days there is

nothing in those boots as well. Jonathan used to wear steel toe caps

in his when he started, I think. Wayne Pivac has just signed a

contract extension. Outside break, takes the defender in, just checks

his run, gets his hands away. Here we go. Just landed on his planted

foot. Shingler again in the line-out. Great play from Parkes.

Looks for support. Dragged down eventually by Charlie Davies. Peter

Edwards. Not who you want to give the ball to on a quick phase play.

It was a great break from Hadleigh Parkes but it has all slowed down

now. Jake Ball. That is a good run from Jake Ball. Have they created

space on outside. He is over the try line. But they may have to check a

couple of those passes on route. Did it go forward?

We are going to check it. Derek, I just want to check the last pass,

please. Is there any reason I cannot award the try. The last but one

pass. The long pass of ten. I think that could be OK. It is the

first pass they are particularly worried about.

From that angle it looks like the pass is travelling backwards.

I think that is a drive. We have got to give them. The linesman or

assistant referee is right in line. That is the first one and I think

they are OK with that one. I think it looks fine.

The try is given. James Davies gets on the scoresheet again and the

Scarlets take a 5-point lead. His third this season. That is a lovely

ball. That is a great pass. They were short of defenders, they were

narrow, and the past takes everyone out. That is a lovely try. Great

support play. Great kick. Aled Thomas supplies the extras. A superb

kick from Thomas. That makes it a 7 point. It is a lovely ball. It all

came from Hadleigh Parkes' bust. It was good build-up. It was

Hadleigh Parkes initially and even though it was slightly slow down...

Jake Ball got them back on the front foot and great vision from Shingler.

That is exactly what they would have wanted after getting seven points on

the board. But Steven Shingler is struggling. Aled Thomas took the

conversion rather than Shingler and he is still struggling with that

foot. He is having a word with the sideline. That would be a big blow

this is early for the Scarlets. Ken Owens gets them going again.

James Davies. There is all sorts of pressure on the Dragons line-out.

Delayed that path that little bit extra but so far allowed to

Shingler is really struggling, isn't he? He stayed off the pitch then. He

does not look comfortable at all. Fair play, he wants to stay on to

defend. He is that much bigger than Dan Jones so he wants to stay in

that ten channel just to defend this scrum. Although it is a ball for the

Scarlets of course! He may have to defend. You knew they

were going to lose the ball then! That was very unlucky for the

Dragons. It was kicked out, it should have been play on, I think.

Andrew Conway has replied and the conversion means the home side have

gone ahead. I think he has penalised Screech

therefore pulling down. Screech against Peter Edwards, plenty of

experience there, he will be trying every trick in the book. Two

35-year-olds. Munster against Ulster the only other game this evening.

Separate against the Blues tomorrow. And on Sunday, Glasgow against

Ospreys. Harry Robinson. The Scarlets are enjoying a good

deal of possession in this opening quarter. Possession and territory. I

can't remember the Dragons being in the Scarlets' half. Total dominance

at the moment. The Dragons have got to keep possession. That possession

statistic says it all. They have had one sniff down in the

Scarlets' 22 and that is it. Aaron Shingler may just have managed to

run-off that injury. Dan Jones has put his tracksuit top back on. The

Dragons coaching setup just alongside us in the commentary

point. That is good work by Elliot Dee. The

scrum was coming under pressure and he hooked it back. That is a great

heart break by Charlie Davies. -- half-break.

That is a nice kick. Which way is it going to run? Is it going to run

just over the try line and make life nice and easy for Harry Robinson?

Paul Weller left. Great speed and support high Shingler. Aled Thomas

as well. Red shirts around him. Aaron Shingler, good juggling skills

by Harry Robinson. Real pressure on the drug is now. Phil John gets

there. That is superb work by the Scarlets. And off-loading game at

its very best and Phil John gets on the end of it. Once the first bust

is made, it is difficult to organise your defence. The Scarlets knew that

and kept the ball alive and this man does not get many tries. There is

the first break, gets through, and then you are in big trouble, support

comes streaming through, they don't panic, and other offload on the

ground, another offload, it a lot but the tackler on the floor. A

lovely half break again. The ball is there but you cannot defend against

that speed of ball. I think Phil John was in it twice in the

movement, I think. So popular in his 14th year with the Scarlets. Only

one man has played more league games and him and that is the Connacht

captain John Muldoon. Just pushed it. And that is a very satisfactory

opening quarter for the Scarlets, the two tries already in the bank.

Yes, they nearly scored a try similar last week against Munster.

Brilliant support play, it is the attitude of both sides. The Dragons

have kept everything they have had and they are paying the price for

it. The Scarlets are showing how dangerous they are this season.

They are getting very good placement, they are clearing out and

the Dragons are not getting numbers into slow it down. They are really

all of these boys, they are in one line. There is actually fullback

and I don't think anyone knew who was defending in the fullback is the

fullback is defending any line. They are very fortunate to get away with

change strategy. You need to get themselves and build themselves into

back row knows what you're doing, then you can start respecting the

Unlike Lasley, they haven't lost a single line-out in the first half so

far tonight. He is made huge difference hasn't he, Aaron

Shingler, he has come back in. It has been a double bonus for them

tonight. Faletau has had a very quiet

evening. The Dragons being so much on the back foot.

I thought again the Scarlet had a chance there as well. There are

plenty of men coming out for the Scarlets. Two passes, you shift the

point of attack and defenders have got to just readjust. The kick chase

for the Dragons is not the greatest. It is where the second try came

from. A lot of doglegs in it. It is not a lot of speed in the kick

chase. I think Jiffy is right there. Opportunity missed. That change made

by the Dragons will be a permanent one now. Head injury assessment for

Dorian Jones. Jason Tovey will stay at ten and Carl Meyer at 15.

The Dragons cannot get a foothold in this one at the moment. There's a

lot of reassessing to be done during the half-time break.

Good take by James Davies. Tried to get it. Now then, bounces

beautifully up into his hands. After nothing at all the Dragons get a try

just before half-time. Well, well, well. They had been hanging on. One

loose pass, good opportunism by Jason Tovey, lovely little bounce

and he strolls in. Could be going in just two points behind after being

totally dominated the 36 minutes of this game but I thought if James

Davies gives the past first of all, it is on. Unfortunately, he tried to

take the tackle and rob the offload. That is their philosophy now. He

gives it there and he's in the hold. He then gives it and the players

have overrun him. The bounces favourable. Good night. Simple as

that. They will not be happy with that, the players or the coaching

staff. At was obviously a preplanned move. He has got to pass that all.

Tom Williams is hitting that line and he has got to give it. The

minute you do not make it, you are in trouble. He has just pushed that.

He will be disappointed with that, Jason Tovey. He did so well to get

on the end for the try. Could have added the two extra points but the

Dragons are back in the game just before half-time. You can see he has

dummied and tried to offload. Phil John not quite as quick get into the

ground as when he scored the try. Good work from Jason Tovey. That is

a bad miss, when you think of it. They get two points... Great hit,

great take. Lewis Rawlins flattened Faletau. He has a couple of big hits

tonight, Faletau, welcome back to the Pro12. He does get up though. He

keeps going. It is incredible. I so thing is on for the past

because if you look at the chaser the Dragons it is a lot of the front

row defending the second man in. If you pick up as a coach now when the

kick returns and say, look where their props are, two passes, you

attack a prop and get on the outside of him, there is agreement to

happen. You have to look up and see where it is.

Munster lead at half-time against Ulster, 19-18. Robin Copeland

getting a try just to edge ahead. Brilliant plate from Rhodri

Williams. Car may. Strong running. Still

alive. Ed Jackson. Not great Bulford Charlie Davies, as James Davies

tries to get through again but he has an well, the scrum-half. Lovely

pop-up to Landman. Screech. The Dragons have found a bit of

confidence. He looks dangerous, Charlie Davies, around the fringes.

Strong carrier. Jason Tovey back inside. And the break by Adam

Warren. Nic Cudd on hand. Now the Scarlets have to be aware. They

could going behind. There are men out there. Ashton Hewitt, good

tackle, Harry Robinson. Kept the ball alive. He has stolen it as

well. Early and work. They can head for the changing rooms just ahead

but not as much as they would have thought. They had so much of that

first half, the Scarlets. The Dragons, fighting back at the end

and getting back within four points, thanks to that Jason Tovey

dry. Entertaining stuff from both teams. And the Scarlets with two

early tries will have been looking maybe to be far more comfortable

place. As it is, they do have the lead at 12. Phil Steele is waiting

for us. You looked as if you were given the real hairdryer treatment

at that Jason Tovey try? What did you say? We started the game really

well and we have been saying, keep hold of the ball, go through the

phases and we will be in with a chance of victory. Line-out much

better this week. Yeah, we have been having a bit of training this week

so it is happy days. Well, for the second week running, it has been a

drizzly night at Parc y Scarlets and it was a big welcome back to the

Pro12 for Faletau from Jake Ball. The Scarlets were the ones who set

the early pace and another try from man of the moment, James Davies.

James Davies at the heart of the second try as well. A superb searing

counterattack after the Dragons kicked deep and Phil John was the

ultimate beneficiary of the second try. That'll be 20 yards when he

tells the story in the clubhouse in a few weeks' time. Jason Tovey

kicked one for the Dragons and on the stroke of half-time there was

this. Jason Tovey hacking through after a line-out move gone awry and

the Dragons in touch at half-time. As Jonathan Davies said, they were

dominated for 38 minutes of that match. And they nearly went over

again at the end. The Dragons are in touch when arguably they should not

be. The Scarlets have had 63% possession in that first half.

Colin, will be Dragons dressing room therefore the relatively pleased?

The coaches have to have an extra nation for what has happened and the

players take accountability for what has happened but if you look at that

last passage for example a loose ball, Jason Tovey kicks through,

arguably he had an opportunity to maybe get a bit closer to the posts

and they are properly more guaranteed his own kick for another

two bytes. I know he missed three points moments before but I am

trying to back the Dragons here in thinking that when you are the

underdog and you come to strike the park, all these adult things have to

stick. You have to stay in contention until fully sniggered.

Maybe I am a little bit biased but they have opportunity sustained her

Jamaican been a but in that at the moment they are still intense. It

could be a bit more. Sean Holley, you be watching this on with

interest as always. On that first try, James Davies can do no wrong at

the moment. Apart from the mistake at the moment -- at the end. The

bowled a play that style of rugby and positions like this. I think the

whole high-risk, high reward, they have got those 12 points on the

board within 20 minutes. Which leaves the Dragons reeling and it is

graded C teams that will play with endeavour. We have all been watching

New Zealand for the last six weeks and that is what they do. It just

shows that when you play with endeavour you will get the odd hack

through and you have lost five points but that is so be it, think

about it, you can keep the scoreboard ticking over, keep the

defence guessing, who is going to off load next, were they to get

tight, were big white, and that is what is really troubling the

Dragons, the way that the Scarlets are moving things around and varying

things up. It is difficult to deal with. That is exactly what they did

without second try. We were looking down and it looked at one point as

if they were twice as many Scarlets on the pitch as scholars. You have

got to filling space in this game in the Scarlets were on top. The

Dragons needed to be on their mettle. It comes in landscape. Is

that the great click here from Jason Tovey but look at the grid -- two

winners. He needs to be pushing. He gets too easily interrupted and does

not make the first tackle. This boy is dangerous and now Hewitt is out

of position again and he is dead. It is great play again from the

Scarlets. Their support play has been fantastic. Phil John, 14

seasons, on the floor, he gets up onto his feet really quickly and

look how he gets into positions. He gives and is more time to get onto

the ball again. We have put a speedometer on him, as we did with

Peter Edwards last week. The front five for the Scarlets at this point

will write on top, hitting rucks and carrying ball and that allows the

Scarlets front row to play. That will be the half-time talk. Keep

them out, don't give a snare. Did he get up to 25 mph? That was deeply

impressive. You have been looking at the Battle of the sevens. We will

look at the stats before the game. James Davies is rightly celebrated

for his role in this team. He is top of the turnover stats. But Nic Cudd

is playing well tonight as well. He is playing on his own and is not

well supported so his stats are high and he is the only one in the team

whose stats are high. If you look at the Scarlets, they are playing with

purpose, they are hitting rucks well. Just track the ball, track the

ball, wait for the off-load, a bit of work, move the ball. So he has

got an easier role when it comes to the team sharing the workload. But

he is so important to them. He will be scoring tries, off-loading,

stealing ball. He will be doing an out and out seven role where Nic

Cudd is out there on his own. You mentioned at the top of this

half-time chat about the Tovey tried and how it was a very well taken try

but if he had had more presence of mind he would have got under the

posts and make that conversions a little bit easier and maybe they

would be a little bit closer. It is a loose pass, 50-50, but he has an

opportunity to put the ball down five or six metres closer to the

posts. He could have made that final kick a bit easier for himself. The

team will be buoyed by the fact they are up to eight points but they

would feel a lot better if they were at 210 points. I am sure they will

be discussing those things in the dressing room at half-time. The

World Cup is nearly at an end. Australia and New Zealand contest

the World Cup final at Twickenham tomorrow and you can follow it all

One of six contenders and today Alun Wyn Jones has been announced as one

of six nominees for the world would be Player of the Year. He is in very

esteemed company but he has had a fantastic season. You look at that

list and Alun Wyn Jones would be a worthy winner. It is dominated by

southern hemisphere players and the southern hemisphere has two teams in

the final of the World Cup but Alun Wyn Jones has been in the engine

room of that Wales pack so for him to be on the list, he could win

that, it is amazing. We have seen the amount of effort he has put in

for six or seven years. And he passed 100 international this season

as well. Martyn Williams is the final tomorrow, the first time

Australia and New Zealand will have contested the final. Tell us who is

going to win and why. The bookies have got a 6-point game, New Zealand

6-point favourites, and I think New Zealand are more complete team than

Australia. As well as Australia have done, I think the All Blacks have

been building and building throughout the tournament. People

said they were slow in the group stages and did not hit their traps.

They were great against France and came through a battle with South

Africa. Richie McCaw, Dan Parkes, Conrad Smith. It may be the last

time they see an All Black jersey and that motivation could be enough.

We have spoken about the Battle of the number sevens. David Pocock and

Michael Hogan -- Michael Hooper play together but they may be other days

the best of all time tomorrow. As a back row, the All Blacks probably

the best balanced in the world. But David Pocock has come back from two

knee reconstructions and he has been the player of the tournament. We

shall look forward with relish but we have got 40 minutes of Pro12

action to save before that. It has just kicked off for the second half.

Back to our commentary team, Martyn Williams, Gareth Charles and

Jonathan Davies. We just courted limbs of one of the

two replacements. He has just put the ball downfield, Aled Davies. And

second half. I just think that Carl Meyer lost that in the air. An

not sure whether it is just the Stephen Jones philosophy but there

seems to be a change in attitude from the Scarlets this year.

Certainly in the last couple of games when they have had a bit of

time together. I think it has got Stephen Jones written all over it.

An unbelievably positive player when he was playing. The training

sessions, a lot of ball in hand. And they all look comfortable with ball

in hand. Good tackle by Hughes. Play on again.

Ben Whitehouse is letting the game flow this evening, fair play. He is

having a good game. Williams. Is he going to back

himself? Looked for Aled Davies on the inside and it eventually was

knocked on by Hadleigh Parkes. You just wonder sometimes, they just

need a bit more courage in their own conviction. I wonder whether he

could have backed himself there. In fairness, I think it was the right

decision to look inside. I don't know. You have got to have a crack

there. Straighten up a little bit and have a crack on the outside. I

would definitely have looked inside there. How long ago was that try

against Australia? About a hundred years ago. My body feels like it was

100 years. That was good work by Ed Jackson for the Dragons, just

tracked the runner and got a big hand in the way to knock it down.

If you run this on, stop it there is second, all you have got to do is

straighten at and then you hold him and then go on the outside. Just

hold this guy at. You run straight at him. If you run across the field,

he is going to cover you. You run straight at him, make him stand and

then get on the outside. That is what you try and do. If there is

support on the inside, you should pass, as Denis Betts told me.

Good angle! Well covered. Was that Tom Williams again? He is getting

involved. James Davies just held up short. The Scarlets knocking on the

door. It is that inject and of pace. If they go left, they have got to

score. They are short on the left-hand side. Phil John fancies

Both of the Scarlets' wingers have been looking to get as involved as

possible. Not just staying out wide on the wings, appearing in midfield.

Certainly giving the Dragons' defence plenty to think about. It is

a brave call her. They seem to think they have got the upper hand.

Down on the far side... Stankovich having a right old battle there. And

Even though the scrum was a good one, they decide to go for safety

first. I did not think that was out of the

norm, did you? I think it was the fact he was claiming the penalty,

screaming and shouting, trying to influence the ref. There was no

sound. Maybe we could not hear what Landman was saying. He was not happy

with it, Ben Whitehouse. After all the pressure, the Scarlets

settle for three. Seven points the difference.

Seven clear points. Really, the Dragons have not looked like scoring

apart from that mistake so it just gives them that little bit of a

buffer. I think you have got to give credit to the Dragons. They have

been totally outplayed and yet they are still in this game. That should

be a scrum to the Dragons. As it is, they have got to build from there

own ten metre line. The Dragons are bit deep and they

are struggling to get over the gain line.

That could be useful. Well taken! Aled Davies to James Davies. Davies

back inside. That is forward. I think everyone in the ground saw

that. Everyone halfway down to Carmarthen saw it. Even the Scarlets

fans shouted forward then. There are no one I'd the Scarlets fans around!

There was a blatant knock-on from Lewis Rawlins from the kick-off and

somehow Ben Whitehouse called advantage over. I think the referee

was very well positioned to call that.

He has got a great turn of pace, James Davies. Really explosive,

isn't he? That time, Peter Edwards' needed hit

the ground first. Stankovich. Thank you. They are having their own

little game over there. He puts some distance on his kicks,

Meyer, I have to say. He does connect. There goes the knee down,

penalty. Look at the hooker tapping away. Get it in!

Sloppy. So frustrating. The coaches are next to us in the box and

immediately hands on the heads from Lyn Jones and Kingsley Jones.

That says it all. They are struggling to get back in the game,

to get possession, and that is poor play. I think he has apologised. He

did not see the Scarlets' player regather the ball. Of course, it is

the third and fourth place play-off tonight. South Africa against

Argentina. They really want to be there!

Dangerous ball. Aled Thomas doing very well. Robinson has left it

behind. That is a clever little kick.

Unlucky bounce, I have to say. If it stops there. But the pressure back

on Harry Robinson. The Scarlets living dangerously and the Dragons

feeding of the mistakes. If there was a counter right there, they were

in with a chance, but there were no forwards there to do it. They are

trying to clear their lines now. They have got to put a few more

drives in. Aled Davies takes it upon himself. Meyer. Robinson needs to

Good defensive work by James Davies. I think he was surprised to be given

that penalty because it did not look as if he actually had his hands on

the ball, he had his hands on the carrier, Ed Jackson. He is straight

in there. He has got his hand underneath in fairness.

It has been a settled back row for the Scarlets, both John Barclay and

James Davies have started every game this season. Lewis Rawlins started

at six last week but otherwise it has been Aaron Shingler as well.

have had some sad news this week as well. Al G Thomas as passed away.

Commiserations to his family. And 43 years tomorrow, Llanelli beat the

All Blacks and eight years ago tomorrow, that means we lost Ray

Gravelle. A great friend to us all and as he always used to say, Phil

Steele, not a bad fullback, not a good one either. And he would be

very happy with the way the Scarlets are playing this season and the way

they have got to the top of the table as the only unbeaten team in

the Pro12 after five weeks. There is the new front row for the Dragons.

the Scarlets' third. That is very well worked. They kept their

composure, got the platform, got it going forward and there is the try

that tonight? Big-money on that tonight. I think the line-out is so

much improved from last week. That was the Achilles' heel against

Munster. And with the driving line-out, when you set it up, it is

virtually impossible to stop. We can see the backs joining in. No matter

-- no idea what they are doing really just adding weight. Phil John

finally wriggles out and a mismatch against Charlie Davies. Simple and

very effective. They rolled the counter drive and then Phil John

knew exactly what he had to do. Turned away from Charlie Davies to

get the ball to ground. That is three tries now and a whole

quarter to go to look for a bonus point.

Great discipline, great composure. And that is the last contribution

from Phil John. He was looking for his hat-trick as well. Ken Owens

will sleep better tonight after last week, he will have been very

disappointed with the line-out last week but a huge weapon for the

Scarlets tonight. Hadleigh Parks has looked very comfortable in midfield

Nic Cudd putting in some good work. Some great work. You have got to be

thinking about a bonus point here now. But they do not need to push

trying to get rid of it before he gathered it. It was very difficult

lot of talk about Faletau today. One thing, you know, thank you for

showing that, that's great, he has had an absolutely fantastic World

try and make some money if he does want to get away but also if they do

sell him after the Welsh Rugby Union has said no, he can still get picked

for Wales. But is what people forget. They can come to a deal and

the Dragons will take the flak. Do you know something we do not know? I

am just saying what could happen. You have not been on the hotline to

A lot going on this week. There is a big game tomorrow. Rugby league on

Sunday. The driving line-out did for them

from close range earlier. . James Davies. He does get past the first

You have got to give a lot of credit debt of Matthew Screech. He was the

one on the ground. Accidental fight, to the face, he just gets up and get

on with it. Well, I think he had both posts but

still could not get it between them but the Scarlets have their very

first bonus point of the season. Another driving line, very well

controlled. James Davies and Phil John get the plaudits for their

tries but it is the guys up front, the front row, doing all the unseen

work in front of them. All the guys at the back of God to do is drop

A great moment, a moment to treasure. Let's see if they can

conjure up a bit of magic between. We have certainly seen Regan King

reducing enough magic over years. Hadleigh Parks has gone onto the

The Dragons, two wins this season. I don't think it's their best

performance but totally outplayed tonight by the Scarlets.

The Dragons have to keep on going. Ten minutes still to go. Keep on

battling. A lucky break up a try in the first half. They still have had

precious little possession to create sending their own, sustained

possession. The dummy cost Aled Davies. Picked

up why Pretorius. I don't think it was a dummy really. He had a little

fumble really and that gave him a to nudge really to get to him. Yeah,

little-known John Downey gathers it and this places close. Sarel

Pretorius joined from the cheaters. Flip back by Cory Hill. What a name

for a side, the cheaters. Offside, you cheaters. That is a shocker,

sharp come Pretorius, isn't he? Great try scoring record. When they

have been a will to keep the ball, the Dragons, they have looked

dangerous. But they have kicked too much tonight. Jason Tovey succeeds

are a dragon supporter or a fan, it is frustrating that they have waited

Exactly. If they are a bit or positive early on, they would have

caused the Scarlets a lot more problems. Unfortunately for them,

the throw drifts off centre. Stephen Jones can afford a little

it right. What is important in the driving maul is not just the catch

but how you protect. Landman does not really know what to do, they

risk it and go towards the middle to Lewis Rawlins, but it is Shingler

and Jake Ball, they act as buffers behind the ball catcher and that is

very important to stop the opposition coming through and

splitting that front line to get to the ball. The ball is now at the

back and it is about patients. The tactic was never to go from this.

You see Hadleigh Parkes coming in, Harry Robinson, and it is great

work. You can see where Jake Ball is now. He has provided that buffer.

That is fantastic play. Again it is mirrored in the second one. Jake

Ball caught this, Shingler is acting as a buffer and you can see the work

they have done, they split the Dragons and that is exactly where

they are going to go through with their forward pack. Fantastic type

play and a contrast to the first half. A great bonus point win.

We have not got a great deal of time left so I am going to change the

subject because we have got a statement from the Welsh Rugby Union

boating Warren Gatland saying the review of the World Cup is complete

and despite speculation to the contrary he wants to keep his

coaching team en masse. Lots of speculation that man is on the move,

Ireland want him, England won him, he could be on the move because we

have not heard from him, but is it a good move? I don't want to say

anything about Shaun Edwards, with an angry face like that, I do want

to incur his rough. But look how far they have brought the Welsh team.

They have been an excellent coaching staff. He may be thinking, is this

as far as I can go with Wales. Wales do need a succession because the

staff are not going to stay together for ever. Shaun Edwards is English,

you may want to be a head coach himself. There are too many

questions to speculate on what is going through his mind. The main

thing is that Warren Gatland has said he wants him as part of the

staff, it is down to the Bath Rugby union. If Shaun Edwards wants to

stay, the Welsh Rugby Union have got to make that happen. Wales have if

not the best defence in the world, one of them. Arguably one of the

best defences in international rugby. The question is, can he make

it even better? You have got to keep evolving and get better and better

and better. Maybe he is thinking, this is as far as I can take the

team. We do defend very well and he is very integral, he is angry and

motivating for the team, he has been a great servant for our country for
