Scarlets v Treviso Scrum V Live Pro 12

The Scarlets are homing in on the play-offs, a permanent fixture in

the top four all season, these guys have been flying the flag and taking

some big scalps. It is Michael Collins and the Scarlets are on

fire. They have conjured some magic along the way as well.

Regan King has that vision. When he's on the ball, there is always

something happening. After 12 weeks on the sidelines, this boy has

returned. We are pleased he is back. It was a good performance and taking

into account the amount of weeks he has been out, it was fantastic.

Tonight they faced Treviso who has taken a few Welsh scalps of their

own. We have a lot of respect for them. The last time we played them,

it took the penalty in the 78th minute for us to win. The Scarlets

may be treating Treviso with respect to they are occupying different ends

of the league right now and it is so tight at the top. A bonus point

tonight could see the Scarlets returning to the summit. Every point

counts from here on in. Good evening and welcome to scrum five live from

Parc Y Scarlets. I am joined by Jonathan Davies and Martyn WIlliams

ultimately, a team with title ambitions have to be targeting a

five tonight? They targeted a top four and now they will target a top

two for a home draw. It is windy, not great underfoot but it is dry.

Treviso, eight players out on international duty, this has to be a

5-point. They have to win the game first and then open it up. If it is

five tries against two, that is what they are after. One of the

impressive things about their runs this season is that they have done

it largely without their superstars. One man who epitomises the Scarlets

is Hadleigh Parkes. He has played every minute of every game of the

Pro12. Such is his consistency and performance, he is outstanding, very

rarely making a mistake. He carries really well, good distribution and

he was not a big name when he first signed. Many people asked whom he

was but he has been one of the best sides signings. He has been truly

outstanding. Surely an adopted west whaling by now, Hadleigh Parkes.

Part of a back line inspired by the arrival of Steven Jones. They have

been playing some scintillating stuff this season? The Scarlets have

approached this season from an attacking point of view. Stephen has

been instrumental in that. It is the basics, the depth, they are enjoying

attacking. They have options here. Parkes is an option, Aled Thomas out

the back. It is the footwork and speed outside.

On the inside, Michael Collins is there. It is great stuff. They use

Regan King of the second receiver. Aled Thomas pulls it right back to

King who controls his speed and he takes it to the line. On the

outside, they controlled the depth. They keep a back row man in the wide

channel, this is Rory Pitman. After this, it is about straightening

people up. It is not rocket science but if you keep the basics right,

you get your rewards. We can see the teams in the dressing room is

getting ready to come out, kicked off is just a few moments away. Phil

Steele is back from off is just a few moments away. Phil

the top, let's see if DTH van der Merwe can get on top of it. Six

tries for Scarlets this year, 41 in all in the league. Jonathan,

interesting one tonight with both teams looking for a victory for

different reasons and both teams looking for tries. Yes, it is

bitterly cold out here but it is dry. The pitch is coming up a little

bit. It is a game you have to target, bottom of the table, if you

have any aspirations of having a top two finish, you have to get a bonus

point with everything so close. It is just a question of getting the

victory under your belt and then going to the tries afterwards, not

just chucking it about. Alberto Lucchese, the bearded scrum-half,

letting the forwards do the work. Quite happy to let them rumble

onwards. That was always going to be the danger. Unless they are going to

use it, as they had been told by the referee, the put-in goes to the

Scarlets. Dylan Evans, Australian-born,

nicking his full start. Pete Edwards alongside him. -- making his full

start. You would imagine the Italians will try to keep the game

tight. Hopefully, the referee will take control of the scrum and get

the game moving. Parkes bringing in Michael Collins.

The full-back is all over the place, Collins, he took a hit there and he

is not happy. Back up on his feet and looking pretty unsure as play

continues. He needs to come off and get assessed, I think. Jake Ball, an

enterprising run. Parkes hits the gap. He is so adept

at getting over that gain line. Bulbring in their again. -- Fer.

Aled Thomas, wasn't quite expecting that one. An interesting decision,

what do you do, do you go for the three points or go to the corner and

the first try? It is a close game away from home but I feel may be

they would be confident winning this.

This is Collins coming in here. Just watch. He gets the hit. Looks like

nothing really. Doesn't seem to be head contact. He is walking back

then and he is gone, he is going, yes... I think that is good work, go

and assess him. He has pulled it to the left of the

post, Aled Thomas and those other kind of kicks you need to put over

early, build the lead said the are chasing the game. I think whether it

is the last kick of the match, to win a game or a point under

pressure, you have to nail them. Unfortunate, that is a weakness in

Aled Thomas's game. He needs to take the kicks at this level, with things

so tight... He missed a couple at Murrayfield last week as well and it

turned out to be a one point lead. Nine of the Scarlets's last ten

games have all been won on lost by two points or less. The Scarlets are

playing with tight margins, the exception, that heavy defeat against

Connacht. This is the commentator's curse, nice, easy ball and this is

the first mistake I have seen him do. It has taken 1286 minutes, I

think, the him to make a mistake. He can get away with that!

Stalwart as always down here at Parc Y Scarlets, Phil Bennett.

Scrum penalty, won by two Vezo. -- Treviso. It looks like a very strong

scrum and they will make the most of that. Treviso, because they want to

slow the game down and keep tight and that just shows, the wind is

with NFC Scarlets in this half. -- Llanelli. We have seen Michael

Collins going off, what is the latest? He had a very badly cut lip

but also, he will not come back on due to a head injury and they think

he might have a bit of concussion. They are not taking any chances so

he is off permanently. A versatile character going on for him, Steffan

Evans. Defending at ten there from the

line-out. A good drive and they fell over each other.

Filo Paulo. Played for the Blues before heading for Treviso. A long

advantage being played by John Lacey. And encouraging signs from

the line-out for Treviso. And again, good scrum. Good

line-out, get the back of the maul, they just fall over each other,

unfortunately. 122 points in the league, Hayward,

only Sam Davies and Rhys patch all with more.

I thought he was frozen for a minute there. Same as Aled Thomas's first

effort. It is a little windy but I thought it was not that windy up

there and both kickers will be disappointed with their first

effort. The ball is dropped but apparently not forward.

Change of direction from Sam Christie. Steffan Evans looking for

space behind the defence. That is a very good kick.

He will win this little bout of kicking. That came off Kirby

Myhill's foot. A badly presented ball by the Scarlets puts them back

moment, Scarlets are very passive in their defence. Not pushing up. It is

Just came to the back of Kirby Myhill's legs. It was a turnover but

I think they didn't get to the Treviso players, he just got his

legs in the wrong position, Kirby Myhill. He kicked the ball away.

Parkes. There might be a bit more space out wide this time. Great

running by Stephan Evalds and he is still going. -- Steffan Evans. What

a run and what try by Steffan Evans. Brilliantly finished by the

youngster. That is a brilliant finish, great feat. Fantastic. That

is what they need to do, get in the outside channels, away from the

centre. Brilliantly finished. Great ball. It has got depth. There is a

two on one. Poor communication but beautiful step, great pace. Over,

just gets the ball over, a brilliant finish. Just watch, he shows and

goes. Slightly dogleg but that is a brilliant finish. A third of the

season for Steffan Evans. They don't come any better, top drawer. Thomas

adds the conversion with the try fully deserved. Found himself in a

bit of space. A little in and out and locked the oncoming winger and

stretches over for the try. A smile on the face of Steven Jones

map. Rightly so. Their defence was very poor. Jordan numbers and a

dogleg defence. That is where Scarlets have two expose them.

Look when he plays it on the outside. Run it on. They straighten

up. That is how narrow Treviso are defending, there is no communication

between the wingers. So that is the area they have to attack.

And because of that, Maselino Paulino deemed not to have rolled

away from the tackle area. Treviso anxious to get their first

points on the board. This time, no mistake from Jayden

Hayward. Treviso are on the board. After 20 minutes, with two tries on

the board, you'd expect the Scarlets now to dictate the tempo of the

match. Dictate where they are going to play. The only thing they have to

do is cut the errors out and the penalties.

The turnover, they have to cut these errors out. That will be

disappointing for the Scarlets' management.

Just watch, ball-watching there. They overread the dummy. I was

thinking he's in. Parkes, Evans again, but again they had loads on

the left-hand side, there is a prop forward and a stand-off, and they

blow the opportunity. I think it is complacency from the Scarlets.

Everyone expects them to get the bonus point. But they have lacked

the intensity and they need to pick it up. They are not dictating the

tempo of the game. The coaching staff were in despair

that they didn't convert that try. The prop passed the first time. As

it was, the pass was picked off by Gareth Owen. Good pressure on Aled

Davies. The scrum is under real pressure. You have to think, if you

are under pressure from the Treviso pack, you would be worried for the

remainder of the season. Lucchese is playing quite well,

isn't he? There he is, he is Harrying Davies,

he is on his own, he is holding on. That is a simple penalty. He can't

clear-off. I thought he would have gone Tor scrum there, rather than

kick to touch. A five-yard scrum, 15 metres left of the post, you know,

the referee has just given a penalty.

REFEREE: I can't check offsides for TMO for you, it finishes now. Are we

clear? Play the game and get on with it. It's the T12s that are the

people who are allowed to speak to the referee. Too many others are

chipping away at the moment. Tom Palmer takes the ball cleanly.

Barbieri looking dangerous. Very solid. Barbieri spins. "Yes" say

Treviso, "yes" say the Scarlets for defending it! Is there anything that

shows... Assistant referee is in first. Nothing this side. He is not

going to go the other side, is he? REFEREE: We don't have enough

information. TMO: We will have a look now. The

Scarlets are very lethargic. He falls and does he roll the other

way? We can't see anything from that angle. He had to spin all the way

around, did Barbieri. He got turned the one way, has to come 180

degrees. There is no way he can give that, can he? There's the ball. And

Kirby Myhill's head is in the way, I think. You can't give a try.

TMO: Last angle, nothing clear and obvious so far, John. The ball is on

Kirby Myhill's head. TMO: John, held up, scrum five,

green ball. Not even the Italian team will give them!

Maybe this is what they should have gone for in the first place. I think

so. They were close. Again, you have to look at the Scarlets' defensive

job on the try line. They haven't got that aggression tonight, I feel.

They have played within themselves. I think Lucchese is looking for a

penalty. It's fairly obvious the scrums and

the lines are the strong point in Treviso's game.

WHISTLE Penalty goes against them. Even

though they seem to be moving forward. Driving inwards, that's

what he said, John Lacey. REFEREE: Number 3, straight of an

angle... There we go, in at an angle.

All the doubts are in the referee's mind over the Scarlets' scrum.

Aled Davies... Not sure what that is, to be honest? Not sure what the

line-out was, a bit of indecision by the Scarlets. Aled Davies rushing

the kick. HOME FANS: Scarlets! Scarlets!

Now it is an opportunity, two passes... The defence could be at

sixes and sevens. I have to say it's slightly

disappointing the first 30 minutes. It feels as if the Scarlets are

trying to impose themselves on the Treviso side. It is like injury

before the line-out takes place. Phil?

REFEREE: The ball is available. If he doesn't want to play the ball,

that is his problem. Four tries is what the Scarlets are looking for.

They've got two, one brilliant effort by Steff Evans early on. And

then just making the line, James Davies. The two tries coming in the

opening quarter. If they could sneak another one in these next seven

minutes, it will be a job well done in the first half.

Possession - 50% each - so there is nothing really in this game. The two

opportunities that they took... Regan King trying a little variation

in midfield. The pass letting him down. It's been turned over. Another

turnover. That's what's keeping Treviso in the

game at the moment, the number of turnovers they have worked. They are

not building the pressure, are they? There's one back for the Scarlets.

Paulino takes it. Was he supporting his own body

weight there? An interesting one. Was he taking the space past the

ball? Was he just leaning over? A very close call, but he got away

with one. This is a good opportunity for the Scarlets. Hit midfield and

then, you know, open up space on either side and just pick off the

lazy runners. That was forward. Fairly adjacent to

Hadleigh Parkes. That was forward. King. Lost it.

A chance for a breakout for Treviso. Jayden Hayward is giving chase.

Across comes Hadleigh Parkes. Good following up by Hayward. Esposito in

there as well. WHISTLE

It was great following up. Jayden Hayward feels aggrieved. He does. I

think he gets a tackle... Does he get up on his feet? The other one is

off his feet and then he gets pushed over. There is nothing - I don't

know who that is there. Esposito. He has absolutely no chance whatsoever

of staying on his feet. When he's smashed from behind by his own

player... Just watch. There he is. Esposito goes in, he is in, he gets

back on his feet, and then off his feet, but he is bundled over by his

own player. It is a clear penalty. James Davies as scrum-half... I

don't really understand why the Scarlets are kicking so much against

the Treviso side. Keep the ball-in-hand, run them ragged, go

wide, and another penalty. James Davies again is the one who wins his

team a penalty with his work at the breakdown.

James Davies played the first eight of the season and then his comeback

game was last week. Esposito goes in, straight in, hands

on the ball, they can't move him off, low centre of gravity. Jayden

Hayward cannot move him. One more chance for the Scarlets

before half-time. It is all a bit static, so they will

have to think again. Hadleigh Parkes at close quarters.

WHISTLE He's consistent, the referee. The

turnovers, they have won eight turnovers now in the first half. The

Scarlets' management will be absolutely crazy. 8-6 for them...

With penalties as well, you know, the game has been stop-start,

there's no fluency by anyone. I just think they are playing well, albeit

within themselves. If I was the Scarlets' coaching staff now, I

would put a rocket up them at half-time! Yes, there is no doubt

they will win this game. I think they will score the two tries in the

second half. But you have a responsibility to the crowd to play

the best of your ability. At the moment, that is falling way short.

14 turnovers in the first half. I can't remember a game with that

many. The Scarlets have a bit more

possession. WHISTLE

If they go quickly now, they will have time to kick for the line-out.

Quick. Kick it for the line-out. So, an unexpected late chance for

the Scarlets. To say that the Treviso coaching staff are

frustrated, it would be the understatement of the year(!) They

are frustrated but... When the crucial line-out came it

was lost and so was the chance to get the third try before half-time.

The Scarlets do have two. They came in the first quarter, superbly taken

by Steff Evans, well finished in the end by James Davies. The Scarlets

could have had so much more and it's gone one way and then the other, so

they had to settle for a lead of 14-3 and we will see what the

captain thinks. Hadleigh Parkes is with Phil. A bit scruffy in that

first half, what was going wrong? We started pretty well. They got a

couple of turnovers. Hopefully, we can go back to the basics, and score

some tries. You are confident you can get the bonus point if you go

"back to basics"? We need to back our skills and get into the game. We

a bonus-point victory could take them to the top of the table. They

started well. Steff Evans will be delighted with his finish, a step, a

fend, and a searing burst of pace. A cracking solo try from the youngster

on the right-wing. Then James Davies, his second game back from

that long spell on the sidelines, and he was just adjudged to have got

the ball down on the whitewash. Trademark celebration! Jayden

Hayward kicked some points for Treviso. 14-3 the half-time score.

They did come close to crossing the line themselves. This went to the

TMO. Unlike James Davies, they were adjudged not to have crossed the

line. The ball was held up so the score remains 14-3 at half-time.

Some interesting statistics. We heard Jonathan Davies talking about

the amount of times the Scarlets have turned the ball over, 8-6.

Tackles missed - 13 missed by Treviso. We did see Treviso make

that one cracking break. Other than that, the Scarlets' defence has been

pretty watertight. Most of the territory has been between the two

22s, so half a job done. They have two tries in the bag. They are after

the bonus-point victory tonight. Will they be pleased at half-time? I

don't think they will be pleased. They threatened halfway through that

first half to open up and play some great rugby. They scored a fantastic

try through Steff Evans. The Italians are very good in the

contact area. If your technique is not right, they will cause

turnovers. They are struggling the build momentum, the Scarlets. They

have won eight turnovers at the breakdown and it mean it is game

hasn't had much in terms of fluidity. Jonathan Davies saying the

Scarlets are playing within themselves and they have a

responsibility to the crowd to play better. He is not happy, is he?

Look, psychologically, they are off it. When you score early, like they

did, the foot comes off the pedal. They still have to do their job and

clean rucks out. So, they had width on the ball and when they did, they

looked dangerous. Steff Evans looked anything but lethargic when he went

over for that first try. What a finish? It was a fantastic try. I am

very frustrated in the truck here. The two tries show what the Scarlets

need to do to get this bonus-point win. Build pressure so they get

penalties and a maul close to the line and be patient and get it to

the wider channels. Let's take a look. It was a great try. We talked

at the top of the show about the boys keeping their depth. We have a

forward at scrum-half and Aled Davies has to be ten metres back

until this line-out moves off the line of touch. Now he comes up, John

Lacey calls him up. The contingency is to pull out, get into this

channel. Watch Gareth Owen how he works hard to get back. Fantastic

play. Now it is about control and depth. There is King, and now again

we talk about the basics, the footwork on these Scarlets' backs -

take note of Aled Davies. Look at the step, the ball is in one hand,

he's got youth and exuberance and he fights to get over the line. Great

try. We need to see more of it. We do. Jonathan Davies 's brother has

scored for Clermont as well. On that Steff Evans's try, the Scarlets have

been without Williams, it shows the youngsters coming through the system

have real talent? Yes, he's got great balance, great footwork and he

is the kind of player who is eager to learn. When they do throw the

ball about, they can show how effective they are. The work of

Gareth Owen, you have to work hard in cleaning the rucks out. Let's

talk about the James Davies try. Well finished by the man. It was an

infringement from Treviso that gave the Scarlets field position to make

that score? Jonathan was saying the Scarlets must play fast. If they do

that, the Italian forwards will get ill-disciplined. They are building

pressure, but what Simone Ferrari - great name but not great technique!

He knows what he is doing. He is lying there. Easy penalty. Now, it

is interesting to note they take it down at the front but they work hard

to stay on their feet, the Scarlets. The inside head on the inside of

people like Peter Edwards creating and he gets his head on the inside.

They are working towards the open. Watch Jake Ball, he comes to the

outside and his head is on the inside, even Hadleigh Parkes and DTH

has a look. He reaches over and gets a great score. It is the

ill-discipline from Treviso that got them the field position. Martyn, I

don't know if I can remember a game where James Davies wasn't Man of the

Match or scored a try? It is quite boring talking about him.

It takes a few games to hit your stride but he is a great talent. All

he can do is keep doing what he is doing for the Scarlets.

We talked about the raffle battle in the Scarlets backline and the

Stephen Jones influence. Always interesting when you get the Welsh

squad players back into their regions. It is frustrating when you

are not getting picked. He had some game time against France, off the

bench. You need your front five guys to carry and make the hard yards.

Good ball-carrier and that frustration, you need to use that in

a positive way. I am sure Warren Gatland will be watching with

Champions League, Martyn Williams! At the end of the season, that could

be crucial. If you watched it frame by frame, obviously, most things

will not be given but at the speed at which he was tackled and he hit

the floor, identity was held and that should have been a try. You

have to put a bit of empathy... I agree with Martyn Williams, the TMO

has to get it right. The referee wasn't sure and he went upstairs. If

we watch it on full speed, that was definitely a try. There are

questions about the referee and the officials, there is nothing cheating

about it, it is a decision that went badly wrong. You still have to have

the best referees refereeing the best games but a shocking decision

and you need consistency and empathy in the Pro12. Thank you. We talked

about how the Scarlets's back line has been pairing the season, one man

desperate to reclaim his place is with Phillip right now. You have a

vested interest in this because you could well be back for the play-offs

if the Scarlets get there? Hopefully, there will be no hiccups

over the next six weeks so fingers crossed. Hopefully I can get a

couple of games in towards the end of the season. Scarlets will be

disappointed -- were disappointed last week not to see the game out.

We need a comment on Wales and England at Twickenham. You score the

winner four years ago. It is four years ago but the boys will be

confident, hoping to stop Billy Vunipola and then they have got a

chance. Let's go back to Gareth Charles and Jonathan Davies in

Really was a chapter of errors by all concerned. They were trying to

shovel on... You know what, but look, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle,

someone has to take it up, recycled the ball and set and then go again.

Maybe they are trying to go wide too early but very lethargic at the

moment as I said. A little bit of intensity and pace into the game and

then they will really damage this Treviso defence. They need to keep

the ball. Good scrum though. It is all about

patience. It looked a very solid scrum, both sides, and then just

have the patience, kept the ball in and eventually got the penalty.

Treviso, like the Dragons, have got eight losing bonus points so far

this season. Shows how close they have come and after beating the

Blues and the Dragons, they were leading Munster for a long time last

week and eventually went down 16-13. They score more points in the second

half, more percentage of the points in the second half than anyone else

in the league. Usually, the other side have given up when they score

so many points, that is why! LAUGHTER

They won the line-out well through Tom Palmer, how they messed it up,

and not quite sure, but Scarlets have got the ball. Slipped tackle.

That is the kind of urgency Scarlets need in their play, they need

somebody to really take this game by the scruff of the neck and Hadleigh

Parkes follows in the same suit. That has to be yellow for Filo

where the Scarlets now take this game by the scruff of the neck. Pick

the intensity up and the tempo and keep possession and cut mistakes and

then put a little bit of exhibition on for the fans. They have got to

heart-stopping moments, the Scarlets look comfortable.

someone who is a good deal happier. I will put my anorak on and tell you

it was 38 years ago today that this man captained Wales to the triple

Triple Crown, it is the great Phil Bennett. That was then this, is now.

If you were captain now, for the Scarlets, with eight minutes to go,

how would you play it? The victory may be is in the Scarlets' grasp at

last. Treviso have been outstanding. I would go for the bonus points. It

is so tight at the top. Go for another try. That bonus point could

be vital towards the end of the season. Steff Evans and James Davies

STUDIO: Two sublime finishes from Steff Evans. This was the first.

Great step inside, and the reach for the line. And James Davies playing

his second game back after a 12-week lay-off just about dabbed the ball

down over the try line. In the second half, a bit of a Treviso

revival and there were some jangling nerves among the Scarlets' fans.

Robert Barbieri, and then he steamed up and took an intercept pass from

Connor Lloyd. Steff Evans, as we saw there, made things safe with his

second try of the night. And another fantastic finish from the youngster,

deserved Man of the Match this evening. Final score here 24-15.

Let's have a quick look at the stats. Scarlets ahead in the

possession stakes. Still most of the action took place between the two

22s. Treviso missing 32 tackles, a stat that proved telling. Both sides

made a lot of metres with ball-in-hand. What this means is

that the Scarlets remain third, they can't climb above Leinster without

that bonus point and Connacht-Edinburgh is still going

on. Let's speak to Wayne Pivac. Is that four points gain or one lost?

Four gained, to be honest. We had a few things not going our way early

on, Aled Davies had a virus and he did well. What about the fact

Treviso have claimed a few Welsh scalps, did that come into your

thinking? They have certainly improved. They have had a good run

at home. They played well, they put us under pressure and got the lead.

So it was character building. Well done on the win. Thank you.

STUDIO: Ultimately, Martyn, it was a win. There was a very nervous period

round about the hour mark when Barbieri put Treviso in the lead?

Yes, the unthinkable was happening. We thought they could lose. It is a

win. Once you have scored two tries after 20 minutes against Treviso at

home, you are thinking it should be a five-pointer. They made it

difference. Steff Evans with the brace tonight and the first was

spectacular, the second was as good? He was magic. It took a bit of class

from Regan King. They left it late but when they took it, they took it

with style. He started with a good carry. He carries it out to the

outside, he makes it carry. He carries it out to the

Treviso to fold. They come carry. He carries it out to the

the line-out. 12 is there. They are working hard. Watch who joins here

now, it is 11, it is the same maul, 13 is in there, 14 joins in, there's

more backs than forwards. It got the nerves jangling. When the young

half-backs come on, this was Lloyd, he is onside, Barbieri, when the

ball leaves the line-out, he is within 15, he reads it superbly

well. It's a lesson for the youngster. They got through. Their

tenacity prevailed and Steff Evans' tries got them clear. Treviso fought
