Semi-Final: Ospreys v Munster Scrum V Live

They are the giants of Europe and the defending champions of the

Pro12 I. But this side are fears no one.

We have got to respect Munster and everything they do. We have done

really well to get the Home semi- final. And their new manager, Steve

Tandy, the Ospreys have won their last five games.

They spirit in the camp is really good at the moment and hopefully we

can keep that going. It is a special thing, what we have created

this year. Both teams have won this title

three times before. Tonight's winger gets the chance to lift the

trophy won more time. We have done really well to get to

the semi-final but we want to make this season last as long as we

possibly can. We are in a good spot and hopefully we can transfer one

more performance to get us where we want to finish the season.

And tonight we get to say farewell to a legend one more time.

We were at the Liberty Stadium when Shane's acrobatics helped propel

the Ospreys towards the play-offs and we are back here tonight as

Munster are the opponents. A close -- a place in the final is at stake.

The teams arrived a couple of hours ago, both camps looking in

determined mood, and the crowd is in pretty good Voyce tonight as

well. The home fans will be hoping to roll their team to victory. We

thought we had seen the last of Shane Williams when it the Dragons

came to town, but we may see him again if it the Ospreys make the

final. Good evening and welcome to Y Clwb Rygbi from the Liberty

Stadium. I am joined by Robert Jones and the Ospreys are worthy

semi-finalists. -- Scrum V Live. The catalyst was probably piece --

the success out in Leinster which removed them forward. And the

International came back full of belief and confidence and they have

filled in so easily to the way Steve Tandy wants to play.

Everybody looks comfortable, everybody wants to play and that

has been reflected on the field. were at the very first game of the

season and we said then that Justin Tipuric would be a player to watch

out for. He has been impressive. is very athletic, he is a big man,

very quick and has fantastic vision for a back row forward. He is very

creative and were probably rank among the best number sevens in the

world. We have got Sam Warburton and both are competing for that

should put his performances for Wales and the Ospreys have been

fantastic. The Ospreys have won five in a row. The platform has

been this much vaunted front five. It is loaded with a Grand Slam

winners and Lions. Alun-Wyn Jones, Adam Jones, Ian Jones. But you have

been keeping an eye on the unsung heroes. Yes, Richard Hibbard, the

hooker. His ball-carrying is excellent. He constantly makes

yards. He has been used very often by the Ospreys around the fringes.

And not just that, he pulls people over, he makes hard yards, and he

gets vital tries. He will be a prominent member of this team with

ball in hand. Fisk he scored the vital try against Leinster which

kick-started this five victories in a row for the Ospreys. Our reporter

is roaming the touch line somewhere. This is the baby that the play-offs

are all about. This is the 20,000 pound Pro12 Trophy. Munster have

made one change in this side. Felix Jones is out and he has been

replaced by John macro -- Johne Murphy. The referee is Alain

Rolland. We are expecting 10,000 people here. Quite a good Munster

attendance as well, lots of red in the crowd. Conditions are just

about perfect. There is barely any breeze blowing and it is Foley call

for the players. Earlier on, I saw some pre-match a reaction from the

Ospreys captain, Alun-Wyn Jones, and the Munster defence coach.

The Ospreys have won the two games in the Pro12 at this season. How

much of the Baring will that have tonight? We have a point to prove

tonight. We have had a bit of an issue with a few of those games so

we have got to prove a point this evening and hopefully we will come

out on the right end of it. You are the defence coach for Munster and

the Ospreys have got some twinkling backs. What sort of defence

mechanism way you put in place tonight to keep an eye on those?

For if you deny them possession and then you make it hard for them by

not giving them space. Hopefully we can make sure they are quiet

tonight. Conditions are perfect. Will that suit you? We like to play

a bit of football as well so it will be an exciting game.

Alun-Wyn Jones, what do you have to do to improve on last week to win

tonight? A little bit more efficient with the possession we

have a. We made a great start last week and we will try to start in a

similar vein. We want to be a little bit more direct and control

the ball a little bit more. We have got the intention to play. There

was a slight hangover from not playing the week before. You have

beaten Munster this year twice. Is there anything to fear? It is a lot

different when you come to the play-off and the semi-final you are

in at the moment so there is still a bit to do. The regular season

speaks for itself but we are in the play-offs now.

Alun-Wyn Jones sounds Foley determined there. One man who knows

a thing were two about winning this competition is Sean Holley, the

former head coach of the Ospreys. Usually, this game is too close to

call and in the last five meetings there has not been more than a

score between them. Critical moments will tell tonight and the

Ospreys should have more power but I am going to show your immense the

tactic they will try to use to stop them tonight. They have got to make

sure they don't carry the ball too high into contact. The players

going over the ball with the ball off the ground. The players will

communicate with the referee and if it does go to a collapsed maul

situation, they were lie on the ball and get the turnover. It is

the second man into the tackle you have got to look for. He is trying

to keep the ball carrier off the floor. If the ball carrier does try

to get to the floor, they will challenge on the ground. Paul

O'Connell wrapping up the ball there. If they do rip the ball and

get away, Munster can be very dangerous on the counter attack.

They are the turnover kings. A lot of been spoken about the absence of

Paul O'Connell tonight but I think they are true unsung Munster

players tonight who need to step up. The first is the captain tonight,

Peter O'Mahoney. This guy is a young man who leads from the front.

He is a great ball carrier and the best so far for Munster. He is also

a very good line-out option. The second is the one-man wrecking Ball,

Donnacha Ryan. He is a real pain for the opposition. He adds in the

ball-carrying department and is also the main line-out source for

Munster. His the Ospreys candidate these two players, I think they

will have to much, but it will be tight.

A couple of Munster men to look out for. We have spoken about how the

Ospreys have had a Foley settled field over the last few weeks but

one selection headache Steve Tandy had was at scrum-half. You would

have picked Rhys Webb to start on Sunday. He has gone with Kahn

Fotuali'i. It was too close to call. Both players have been playing very

well. He has been given the opportunity to start. He is quick,

he is sharp, he plays this high- tempo game that Steve Tandy wants

the Ospreys to play. But Rhys Webb can come on and make an impact.

Both are quality players, there is no doubt about that. There is a

certain Ronan O'Gara on the bench for Munster. He has not played

since he injured his leg against Munster up. If this game is tight

with 15 minutes to go, he is the best kind of guy to bring on.

is no one better. He is fantastic at winning games. He has done it

time and again for Munster and Ireland. Ian Keatley is a very

talented player and they have a very good back line but if it comes

to winning rugby, Munster have proven in the past how could they

are and that the centre of it all, more often than not, is Ronan

O'Gara. We thought Shane Williams's last game was a few weeks ago, it

might be tonight, it could be the final, but one man who is leaving

at the end of the season is Paul James. He is the most capped

Ospreys player ever and he has been a rock for them over the years.

has been one of the cornerstones of the scrum alongside Adam Jones. It

will be a loss but the Ospreys do have some young players coming

through. They are developing for the future. Paul James could well

figure as part of the Welsh squad but with the likes of Ryan

Bevington there, they have got the quality coming through. Home

advantage for the Ospreys, they have beaten Muster twice this

season, are they favourites tonight? They are, and I think they

will come through. They have got home advantage and that I think

we'll pull them through. It is a huge occasion tonight. The

crowd is growing, there is a lot of pressure. The big names are going

to have to pull out some big Welsh language commentary is on the

red button and you can also listen to the red zone. Let's cross your

It is a perfect evening and as we look out over the field, we still

see fans coming in and they are expecting one of the biggest crowds

of the season. He's a kind of climax to the season you would want.

They are absolutely perfect conditions, a nice big crowd for

Shane's last game! Maybe! He is like Frank Sinatra with all these

comebacks. As I said, they have done exceptionally well to finish

second. They have had a rich vein of form, confidence is high, they

come in on the back of a good platform seem to be a little bit

more adventurous. I am really looking forward to it. I think they

start as favourites but this man leading Munster, I have been very

impressed with him. If they can put him on the back foot, that will

have a huge influence on the result. The two teams emerge from the

tunnel. They have their eyes on the prize. The RaboDirect Pro12 Trophy

is in front of them. That is what they are playing for. And with both

of them having disappointments in Europe, that is the one thing they

have less to play for. The two South African props had made it

great contribution this season. They will the well-tested tonight.

Donnacha O'Callaghan replaces Paul O'Connell and a late replacement at

fullback, Johne Murphy. That means Ivan Dineen, a centre usually, will

have the task of marking Shane Williams. Simon Zebo on the other

wing. Another one of the top tier scorers in the league this season.

Simon Zebo. The game has set off at Fotuali'i saw the Catt pulls up

really sure why they are putting themselves under pressure. This has

got to go down the field. It had plenty of height on it. Hanno

Kahn Fotuali'i waits until the very last second endear he is ready to

receive. No other options. Far too slow. Simon Zebo. Hanno Dirksen has

got to be careful. That could have been a penalty. Again, a bad ball

shuffled on by Munster. The Ospreys are coming out of the blocks very

quickly. Joe Bearman got back. Good support from Tommy O'Donnell.

Lifeimi Mafi thought he was going to go through the gap. BJ Botha. He

back foot when he challenged Conor Murray. But it is very aggressive

defending from the Ospreys. Not giving Munster time to settle on

the ball. They look in a panic at the back seat. There is Hanno

Dirksen. He just fell over his ball alive but they are aggressive

in the contact area, they have got aggressive line speed, the Ospreys,

and that is what is making it difficult. But they are trying to

play behind the back foot, Munster, and they are putting themselves

under a lot of pressure. Keatley has turned immediately. He

knew he had done their job. There are two quality kickers and there

this evening. Just watch the defensive line. As the ball comes

out, if we stop it there, this guy is just in front of the line. That

makes it a natural break for these players. He has a go because the

outside man is in. That is what has happened on a couple of occasions,

the tackle. Simon Zebo came in from the side and Alain Rolland is very

great game but it is stop-start at the moment. I know he is playing to

the letter of the law. Maybe he was the only one on the ground was all

that decision. -- who saw that decision. Johne Murphy has stayed

down. That will be a worry for Munster. It will be interesting who

they bring on because Danny Barnes could go in the centre and Keith

struggled without Paul O'Connell in the line-out. Summer miss

communication and it has given the Ospreys the possession they needed

after reports start. Watch out for Simon Zebo here. He has been

creeping in from his winger. That is the man he -- they are missing.

Dan Biggar. This is a Test kick but he has been kicking with a lot of

well struck by Dan Biggar. Metronomic. And teenagers the

Ospreys back ahead. -- he emerges. Johne Murphy is looking pretty bad.

He has got a lot of strapping on but he's not running comfortably at

the moment. I can't see him staying on the pitch. At the third time of

Ryan Jones. Dan Biggar. I think there was a pass on their for

Ashley Beck. Johne Murphy is going off. He is just making up the

numbers at the moment. They need to recognise that Johne Murphy is not

fit. Someone should look up and say, the fullback is not fit, and in

sport it is a cruel thing but you have got to try and play on him.

drive. Ronan O'Gara will not like the possession Ian Keatley has been

having because everything has been shuffled back to him. He I am sure

he will have a quiet word with the forwards. He will be taking it

downfield. Just recovering from injury himself. I'm sure he fancied

a bit more time in the stand before half remaining. They were too tight

affairs in the League previously. The Ospreys winning 17-13 in

Ireland. 19-13 at the Liberty O'Mahoney was under all kinds of

pressure. A great pass. Ashley Beck. Has he slip that tackle? No, he

hasn't. Great tackle. Had to be made. Dan Biggar. It is still on to

the left. Shane Williams is out there. He is against the hooker.

Richard Hibbard. A nice pass to Justin Tipuric. The pressure is

really on Munster now. Alun-Wyn Jones. They have got to get to him.

Straight away, I knew. It does not matter if he is the attacking man,

Alain Rolland is right in there. He gives precious little time for the

example. They are going, one low, one high. They stayed on their feet.

That is a penalty. That is a perfectly good decision. You know

what you have got to do now. You know what you have got to do with

Alain Rolland. And for the first time during the match, we can go to

the touch line. You punched the air in frustration there. Why was that?

We look good with the ball in hand but we have talked about support

play in their week and we were a bit slow there. It looks like it is

going to go down to the wire. that is something we spoke about.

We have just got to tighten up, especially our kicking game. We

want to get in to a loose game on our terms. If it is a level at 80

minutes, it goes to extra time, of course. And then a kicking contest,

if needs be. Let's hope that does not happen. That was the most

tonight. I think they have got a bit of momentum now, the Ospreys,

and if they can get two scores in to run at Ronan O'Gara. Is this a

has been very, very good at by the Ospreys. What a scramble! Munster

have the advantage at the moment. They are still at sixes and sevens

there. The Ospreys defence it survives. Well, I thought that

Munster just lot their composure. Poor execution in the passes. The

Ospreys were hanging on. Create counterplay by it the Munster

forwards. This is it. Two overlaps, either side. A great opportunity to

score. Again, the ball comes up, a poor pass. He places the ball late,

half-time... Simple, effective ball. If they can keep their discipline

and now, the Ospreys, they will get the six pounds. Good tackling again,

good pressure from the Ospreys, they really are pushing that line

defensive. Alun-Wyn Jones is very clever. He got on the wrong side.

Again, sloppy passing from Munster. It is not the monster we have seen

a year after year after year. A the ball is slow. Always difficult to

attack. The pressure the Ospreys are applying at the moment his

blustering Munster. The Ospreys could take this game away from

Munster. A great steel by Peter coming up. Keep the discipline.

Some thumping tackles going in from the Ospreys. Inside again! What a

way to end the first half. With an absolute superb try for Kahn

Fotuali'i. As I said, keep your composure. When the ball went wide,

you had an injured loose forward and a second row against two

wingers. Agreed inside ball with lovely support - a lovely try.

and that is what we are seeing. Both sides want to play, they are

looking to get the ball wide, we have seen a lot of skill but

defensively as well. Both sides are very aggressive. Ultimately, it is

the Ospreys defence that is winning the game. It started ominously for

the Ospreys when Munster scored and Munster took advantage at the

start of the game. We have highlighted the first break from a

Keith Earls. Ashley Beck is a little bit out of sync. But the

next is Kahn Fotuali'i. The back three don't communicate enough.

They should be talking to each other. Just a lapse in the first

half, early on, but since then they Some fine attacking play from

Munster there. Absolutely. They obviously worked together in

training, they understand each other, and Lifeimi Mafi was moving

out. He stepped in, committed Andrew Bishop, and brought Keith

Earls alongside him. The angle that he came that was basically down to

Lifeimi Mafi and his ability to step inside. It was fantastic play.

We don't see an awful lot of that these days and these two players

understand each other very well. that silenced the crowd initially

fair, were looking pretty ragged. The handling from the the Ospreys

has been really paying of. Shane Williams is very unlucky here.

Another poor line-out created the possession. Dan Biggar is coach to

to get a second touch. Andrew Bishop is in support as well and

that is a great try. The coach will be very happy with Daniel for

working hard of the ball. Going into half time, that try at the end

was a real killer and what the Ospreys coaches will be saying is,

keep been relentless. They are getting ragged later on in this

It was that lovely offload that made it from Ryan Jones. He has

impressed me throughout the season. It is not just his ball-carrying

and getting does offloads away, he is a tremendous ball carrier, he

breaks tackles, he makes yards. But ultimately he is no Dan Biggar or

Rhys Priestland. But he has had a fantastic season. As we thought,

the half-time whistle was about to blow, we got a one last try and it

was a contender for try of the season. Yes, and a lot of it was

well. Joe Bearman does as well. He delayed his pass long enough. Kahn

Fotuali'i basic he took his line perfectly. He was coming in, he

could see the defender coming across and that was a fantastic try.

But they worked hard defensively in Their defence has been fantastic.

The second half is coming up. This is a semi-final number one. The

second semi-final is tomorrow night live on S4C. That is Leinster

against Glasgow. Coverage starts at 7:20pm. In June, Wales take on the

Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium. We will be covering that

one. So the end of the season is fast approaching but the awards

season is in full swing. Last Sunday, the great and good gathered

in Cardiff for the annual Pro12 awards ceremony.

There is still some soaking to be done on the pitch but this foray

gave the players, coaches and journalists have a chance to

reflect on the season gone by. Nigel Owens won the inaugural

straight-talking award for his no- nonsense manner on the pitch while

Jonny Sexton picked up the Golden Boot. The shortlist for try of the

season was a competitive one. After a foot on the night, it was Hanno

Dirksen who came out on top for his superb solo effort against

Edinburgh. Tim Visser was crowned a player's player of the air. Andy

top the try-scoring table for the third year running. And Shane

Williams received a special chairman's award.

Congratulations to all the award winners on the night. We can now

hear from Robin McBryde. First of all, an estate from Robin -- Warren

Gatland. We hear he might be available for some of the Australia

Test. He it is a long process and I think you will be asking that

question for a long time. It is going to take a long time to heal

before he can put any weight on it so we will have to see Howley

progresses. The Barbarians game is on Scrum V Live. You also have a

test to Australia. We are going to send out 15 players against the

barbarians. Some players will figure and in Australia some

players will figure in both matches. Is that Barbarians game and

unofficial trial for the Australia tour? A little bit, maybe. Our

minds may be made up by then but it is going to be a great occasion.

Hopefully it will be a good game. Oh have you seen tonight who could

push for selection for the Barbarians game? Off there are

quite a few of us the Ospreys. They look quite comfortable. I am glad

they scored at the end because now I think it is a fair reflection of

the first half. If they were a little bit more clinical, they

could have been further ahead. truth in the rumour you have become

Ryan Jones and Adam Jones's kicking coach?

Thank you very much. The squad is announced next week and it could be

39 players which will then be reduced. Anyone playing tonight who

has put their hand at full selection? Ryan Jones! It seems a

Foley settled side, the Welsh team at the moment. The starting 15, in

terms of Australia, will be the 15th flying out early. There are

players who have an opportunity to figure. We have mentioned Richard

Hibbard earlier on. I think he is one rule will be looking to play a

part. Probably one or two others. Dan Biggar has certainly got better

and better as the season has gone on. One player who will definitely

be on the plane is Adam Jones. We caught up with him earlier in the

week. The for the Dragons game, everyone

built it up as Shane's last game. I was watching a programme of the

night before and I was starting to fill up. It was a bit embarrassing.

But he is a good friend. We came through Nice together, we have paid

for the Ospreys, Wales and the Lions. For me, he is the best Welsh

player ever. He's going to be a massive loss for Wales and the

Ospreys. And for rugby in general. Paul James, I have spent 12 or 13

years pushed up with him in the scrum. It is going to be an

emotional night. He told me after the Dragons game and we were taken

aback. It was a sad way to see him go. That is losing two big players.

The Ospreys have a lot of a stick of the media, of people, of pretty

much everyone, so I think we have done it the right way. We have got

players we have got rid of but it is something that has got to be

done. If we do win, it will stick two fingers up to the doubters and

than the Welsh so you have got to do the best with the players you

two years is a real bonus. I think that was one of the key decisions

they had to make. There are a lot of players leaving but they needed

to keep some key players, especially at front, and Adam Jones

is probably the most important of the maul. Alongside Ryan Jones,

Alun-Wyn Jones, Ian Evans, you have got a core of players still young

enough to play for the next three years and bring the young players

through. The balance is the most important thing and the Ospreys

seem to have that at the moment. is about to return to the field

It was a great performance from us. To beat Munster was great and I

thought the supporters were unbelievable tonight. We have still

got to win in the final. Off what was the bedrock? Defensively,

Munster did put us under pressure. But we turned the ball over and

when we did we executed well. Even when we were two or three tries up,

their defence was still strong. We did not want to give Munster any

of tries to look at that the Hanno Dirksen 1 was pretty special. It

all came down to immense defensive from turnovers from defensive

situations, it typified by Justin Tipuric. Look at the appetite of

nine years involvement, this is the best I have seen the Ospreys finish

of tries. They showed great confidence, ability and appetite.

Richard Fussell has gone when tonight but Hanno Dirksen is really

showing his colours now. He knows where the line is, he has got a

great finish, and he could devise what the Ospreys are about. Surely

We have watched many matches this season and I can't remember a more

enjoyable one than that. You hardly ever see Munster demolished.

Absolutely right. That could have been a record score against Munster

not fear either of those sides. Leinster are probably the best side

in Europe but they have got a cup final beforehand. If they win that,

will they have the appetite to win in this final? Last year, Munster

blew them away. But aside for side, the way as the Ospreys are playing,

the way Leinster are playing, it will be one cracking contest.
