league. They are the defending champions. Tonight, the Ospreys

unseasonable late summer weather in Treviso. There was torrential rain

tough opening game for them. It's never an easy place to come and get

a result. They turned over the Dragons and the Scarlets last

season. Go evening, a very warm welcome to

a new series of Scrum V. A new studio, a new studio. Thankfully,

some familiar faces alongside me. Former Wales international Jonathan

Davies and former Ospreys coach Sean Holley. It's a tough place to

go. Realistically, should it hold much fear for them? You never know

what form you are going to start the season with. The end of last

season, they were brilliant. They played with mud on their face. When

you saw them at the start of the programme, they are smiling. The

focus through pre-season is your first game. Wherever you go, you

want to nail your first game. To do that, irrespective of how they play,

to get a result on the board, it's a good start. They did exactly that

last season, with a opening victory over Leinster. Perhaps most

impressive was the end of the season. Seven in a row, including

the epic final against Leinster. What was it that made them so

irresistible in that phase? There are lots of things through the

season. I picked a few things from the analysis. They like their low

tackles. They challenge this space in the title contest. That affords

them legitimate turnovers. They are one of the more counter-attacking

teams. This gives them the quick ball and the offload they need.

Players like this have given them the confidence to score tries. It's

also to defied by the likes of Rhys Webb. Look at him coming off the

bench. We have to get familiar with James King. Another underrated

player, the versatile Isaac. You can see them queuing up to score

and put sides away. That's a tribute to the fitness coaches.

This guy has become a household name. A strong step, he makes lots

of wine breaks. The guy that takes the stick but makes them take his

Daniel Biggar. He's a consummate professional. As Jonathan said,

going into this first game, it's not a fixture they will be

relishing. They have never lost to an Italian team. And yet the

conditions make it a very tricky It is not rocket science. They

played well at the end of last year. They created a quicker ball and

they utilised that. That is when you bring in players like Beck and

Derksen. The style they played was really enjoyable to watch. At the

end of last season, they were magnificent. That final results in

Leinster was brilliant. OK, thanks. We can cross over to Treviso now

and speak to a Welshman who knows a thing or two about the Italian

Let's talk about the Ospreys scored. It's very pared down. We were

looking at the stats. 20 players have left, through transfers and

retirement. One new arrival in the form of Jonathan Spratt. Have they

have the depth of squad to defend it? Adams is not playing, Ryan has

picked up an injury. It's a difficult balance. All of the

regions have streamlined their squad, for these reasons, financial

reasons. They have big games coming up. By the same token, they need to

get off to a good start. The end of the season last year was excellent.

How they cope with -- remains to be seen. They need to get off to a

good start. They have retained the core of the pack, a pack that

terrorised so many opponents last season? You look at successful

sides, it starts up front. But if you haven't got a solid back row,

your back row doesn't function, you don't bring your try-scorers in.

Adam Jones is priceless. But when he doesn't play, they need to see

how Jarvis plays, Bevington. That is the platform that they used to

springboard their success. mentioned the likes of James King,

Tom Isaacs. Guys like Derksen and Ashley Beck, break through seasons

for them. Who might be the next to Ashley Beck? Sam Lewis is playing,

Rhys Webb. Sam Lewis, James King, they are the rest. Bevington will

get his opportunity. It's an interesting tussle in the back row.

An abrasive experience against a very young, very athletic and very

good back-row. Donovan Thomas, he The kick-off is nearly upon us.

good quality first-phase possession. But again, the net result is that

the Ospreys lose the ball. It will be frustrating. This is not like

the Ospreys. They are not shifting the extra pass and isolating a one-

on-one in defence. This half will be more of a dogfight. The half-

time team talk will be about that, and they have to stay within a

score. The full-back, Richard Fussell, he is key, because their

weakness is the 12th/13 area, they do not like defending, the Italians

have. They all forward orientated. If Dan Biggar can put in good kicks,

they have got to put their hands up and carried the ball, because

kicking into this wind will be difficult. Where the Ospreys played

the game will be crucial. If they are in the 22 all the time, they

will give penalties away. They do not have the discipline. Their

premier competition. I think it would make it even stronger, if

anything. Of the Welsh regions, the Dragons had the best pre-season

build-up. I think they will improve. It needs to get to the business end

of the season. That means challenging for Heineken places.

Teams like Glasgow don't have to do that. It's strong enough anyway, if

the Italians going and link up, it's a tough competition. They are

going to learn. If you are not good enough to play in the Pro 12,

you're not good enough to go to the Heineken Cup, they don't deserve to

being there. They have got to go The Ospreys back coach is worth

fill. Have to put you on the spot about the sending off, what were

your thoughts? The first yellow card was disappointing. We have

spoke about discipline. I think the second one was touch and go, in

terms of intent. You have the wind advantage in the second half, what

have you spoken about, how to use it? Build our way back into the

game. We never had any meaningful pace going forward. A bit more

control without kicking game and accuracy. The new laws, have they

come into play much? Not really. It's been frantic around the ruck

things well. Get the kicking game right, get into the right positions,

build the pressure. It's not come to be about scoring just three or

not capitalise. But we have got to look at the positives.

rustiness from the first game of the season, that is a missed

opportunity, they should have won that easily, hands down, on the

expected to win. Having said that, they have created the opportunities.

There are the lot of positive signs that they still have the quality.

The conditions played a huge part. Chivvies so never got it into a

second pass -- Treviso. But they are coming home next week. It is a

It is not as if we have had a blistering summer. We have had a

lot of rain, so the players would have done their work in the rain.

Those conditions would not have been a surprise. They will be

bitterly disappointed. They should have won on the second half

midfield, they did not know how to handle him. He would have been the
