Beware the Springboks are here, and have laid the gauntlet down.

:00:22.:00:27.

We try not to talk too much about it, I would rather walk the walk and

:00:28.:00:35.

talk the talk, you know. We will have all the weekend's rugby

:00:36.:00:40.

action, as the battle for Pro12 supremacy rages on.

:00:41.:00:44.

And we remember one of the most remarkable achievements in Welsh

:00:45.:00:50.

rugby history. All of New Zealand know about

:00:51.:00:53.

Newport, because they beat the all Blacks.

:00:54.:01:00.

Good evening and welcome to Scrum V. Jonathan Davies, Hugh Bennett and

:01:01.:01:07.

Shawn Hartley are all here to discuss the heartbreaking defeats

:01:08.:01:09.

against South Africa into a hopefully famous win next weekend.

:01:10.:01:13.

We will also have all the action and analysis from the Pro12, and we will

:01:14.:01:17.

begin with the Scarlets against Ulster.

:01:18.:01:23.

Ulster arrived at a blustery pitch on a six-game winning streak.

:01:24.:01:36.

Phil John War the skipper's armband for the Scarlets.

:01:37.:01:43.

Was it forward? I think so.

:01:44.:02:04.

This is one he can kick with his eyes closed, straight and true, no

:02:05.:02:09.

problem. That is a great break from Josh

:02:10.:02:20.

Turnbull up to the 22. Gareth Owen, one pass will do it for the

:02:21.:02:21.

Scarlets. The Ulster cover is a bit bare on

:02:22.:02:27.

that far side. It is a penalty.

:02:28.:02:40.

Penalty given, Steven Shingler is still going. They will come back for

:02:41.:02:42.

the penalty, though. Steven Shingler gives it a fair old

:02:43.:02:51.

whack. That is the best thing to do in the wind, no problem, 3-3.

:02:52.:02:56.

Now, can the Scarlets finally get over the line this time?

:02:57.:03:02.

They had success earlier with the old rolling maul.

:03:03.:03:09.

Ulster crumble and the Scarlets have got the first try.

:03:10.:03:15.

Thomas with a little dink through. Inside for Turnbull and this is a

:03:16.:03:23.

good chance for the Scarlets. Can Gareth Davies find support?

:03:24.:03:28.

It is a penalty, this could be a yellow card, it has to be.

:03:29.:03:50.

It was on David McIlwaine. No problem, and the Scarlets are up

:03:51.:03:55.

to 14. He was grabbed -- cropped then,

:03:56.:04:09.

wasn't he? He was cropped by Roger Wilson, that will be worth a yellow.

:04:10.:04:23.

Ulster are a man down, remember, now they have a chance to drive it.

:04:24.:04:29.

As long as they have monitored, the referee will be happy.

:04:30.:04:37.

The arm was out. Rob McCusker, the water boy, really

:04:38.:04:44.

cheering his forwards on. And he has nailed it. A great kick

:04:45.:04:53.

by Aled Thomas. To Amanda the players outstanding,

:04:54.:05:07.

and you cannot ask for more than that when you are playing against a

:05:08.:05:13.

quality team like Ulster. We got everything and controlled everything

:05:14.:05:16.

really welcome and we more than deserved result.

:05:17.:05:21.

Yes, Simon rightly lavishing praise on his players after escaping from

:05:22.:05:30.

jail last week against Zerbre that was significant.

:05:31.:05:34.

Yes, you would expect them to finish in the top four. They are toughing

:05:35.:05:41.

it out, really. The Scarlets forwards this year have really

:05:42.:05:44.

surprised everyone. The set pieces have been good with them. It is just

:05:45.:05:50.

a question of playing the game and the right areas and toughing it out

:05:51.:05:53.

and getting the result and getting off the field for a cup of tea or

:05:54.:05:58.

something! Yes, dreadful conditions across the

:05:59.:06:02.

UK and Ireland this weekend. The bread at ice played a part

:06:03.:06:06.

yesterday, but we have seen in the last few weeks the Scarlets'

:06:07.:06:12.

forwards asserting themselves in a way that is very untypical.

:06:13.:06:17.

Yes, we all know that the Scarlets can play an open and expansive title

:06:18.:06:22.

of ten, but this particular squad has to learn.

:06:23.:06:33.

Last night it was about the conditions and the forward play, and

:06:34.:06:36.

conditions dictated the style of play.

:06:37.:06:43.

Temani was named as a big player on the night, but it ironically was the

:06:44.:06:48.

old player, Phil John, who had a great game. He was the captain on

:06:49.:06:51.

the night and had a big, big game. It wasn't just in the loose. Watch

:06:52.:06:57.

the Scarlets, they had this one out style of play, playing around the

:06:58.:07:01.

corner. The gap Gareth Davies, looking for the short side playing

:07:02.:07:05.

against the grain the other way. That was very effective on the night

:07:06.:07:10.

with people like Jake Ball, who is coming to the fore. With the new

:07:11.:07:15.

scrum laws, they have been imposing themselves against the likes of John

:07:16.:07:19.

Afoa. We are starting to see driving more from the Scarlets, something

:07:20.:07:24.

they don't have a reputation for. This example as early on and leads

:07:25.:07:28.

to some points and ultimately manifests itself in them getting

:07:29.:07:31.

themselves over the line for the score. It is a great forward effort

:07:32.:07:36.

and a lot of credit to those boys and the coaches.

:07:37.:07:39.

Martyn Williams said a few weeks back that Phil John's form had put

:07:40.:07:45.

him on selection at the grand old age of 32. Are these guys benefiting

:07:46.:07:52.

from the new laws? Yes, Phil has reacted to the

:07:53.:07:55.

captaincy well, but my argued it would be that he is a veteran of the

:07:56.:08:00.

scrum and the laws suit him. The older guys love to play the new laws

:08:01.:08:05.

and he is there in the action now. You can see the knock-on effect on

:08:06.:08:09.

the rest of his game. Because they have changed the laws on the scrum

:08:10.:08:14.

he has confidence in the scrum. He has been a good player, but this

:08:15.:08:19.

year he has been brilliant. The scrum has been very aggressive from

:08:20.:08:22.

the Scarlets. It is bringing back the art of

:08:23.:08:26.

scrummaging. Some of the players playing

:08:27.:08:33.

professional rugby are used more to the kit and Jess, whereas he

:08:34.:08:37.

relishes the technical aspect. All of those skills from ten years ago

:08:38.:08:41.

he can bring back into the game! He has added a few more years into his

:08:42.:08:43.

career. Let's turn our attention to the big

:08:44.:08:47.

one, the South Africans have arrived in Cardiff this afternoon ahead of

:08:48.:08:54.

next Saturday's big Test. Last month they came agonisingly close to the

:08:55.:08:58.

rugby championship beating New Zealand but fell at the final

:08:59.:09:01.

hurdle. Next week they will look to take out their frustrations on Wales

:09:02.:09:02.

for sure. When the Springboks come to town, we

:09:03.:09:14.

all know what to expect - bullying, brutality and pain.

:09:15.:09:24.

We get brought up playing a hard, physical game. You need to be tough

:09:25.:09:32.

when it counts. Guys go into the game with a mindset like that. They

:09:33.:09:42.

are relying on you to step up your game, not just from a tactical and

:09:43.:09:45.

technical point of view, but from a physical one.

:09:46.:09:46.

You generate that confidence when you put the Springboks shirt over

:09:47.:09:50.

your head. It is almost a bullet-proof feeling when you put

:09:51.:09:54.

the green and gold over your head. Especially against the northern

:09:55.:09:58.

hemisphere sides, we do approach the game with a lot of confidence.

:09:59.:10:03.

But despite their unshakeable self belief, the Springboks, who have

:10:04.:10:06.

been training in Johannesburg this week, have more than a little

:10:07.:10:11.

respect for the next opponents. The thing that makes Wales such a

:10:12.:10:15.

difficult team to play is there are no witnesses there. They are a very

:10:16.:10:20.

balanced side. They have lot of good forwards, a lot of big backs, speed

:10:21.:10:25.

and skill. It is difficult to get a game plan going against them and

:10:26.:10:28.

they have a good kicking game, as well.

:10:29.:10:31.

They have won the Six Nations twice in a row. They were the dominant

:10:32.:10:38.

team. We are tapping very well and we know what is coming and the boys

:10:39.:10:42.

will be up for it. Whales are very physical, they have

:10:43.:10:47.

a very big pack. They have big wings, centres, you know, so it will

:10:48.:10:52.

be tough. The conditions, it will be raining, hopefully the roof will be

:10:53.:10:55.

closed at the stadium, but it will be physical.

:10:56.:10:59.

It doesn't matter what happened with the Lions. We believe we have grown

:11:00.:11:03.

as a team and this is a totally different challenge, different

:11:04.:11:07.

mindset in the way that you play. But they are a quality side, and we

:11:08.:11:11.

respect them. It will be a huge battle.

:11:12.:11:15.

The manager has been in charge for 21 games and are slowly putting his

:11:16.:11:20.

mark on the squad. South Africa's reputation as 1-dimensional bashers

:11:21.:11:23.

and kickers is receding. In the recent championship they scored more

:11:24.:11:27.

points per game and made more metres than any opponents. They are the

:11:28.:11:31.

most incisive, making more clean breaks per match than anyone else.

:11:32.:11:35.

Marry this with a more disciplined approach and we're looking at an

:11:36.:11:38.

altogether more sophisticated Africa.

:11:39.:11:42.

The old game plan has changed in the last couple of years. The manager

:11:43.:11:50.

came in in 2012 with his own set of ideas and principles. We have been

:11:51.:11:55.

stereotyped as a conservative playing side, kicking at the right

:11:56.:12:03.

times and playing for territory. If an opportunity comes around South

:12:04.:12:07.

Africa will take the opportunity now.

:12:08.:12:13.

You can definitely see the way it has changing the way we approach the

:12:14.:12:16.

game. There has been a lot more attacking intent even from deep in

:12:17.:12:20.

our own half. We have been scoring tries, especially against the all

:12:21.:12:29.

Blacks. It is looking well for South Africa in terms of the overall

:12:30.:12:31.

approach to them. Ultimately, it is the physicality

:12:32.:12:35.

that remains the calling card. Whales have their hard men of their

:12:36.:12:40.

own right now, who are every bit as fierce.

:12:41.:12:43.

These guys are enforcers in their own right, but this will be the

:12:44.:12:46.

first chance a lot of the Springbok players will have had against them.

:12:47.:12:53.

The first game away is at the home of Welsh rugby against a strong

:12:54.:12:58.

side, so you have to perform. The guys have to live up to it. We

:12:59.:13:03.

try not to talk too much about it, you -- we would rather walk the walk

:13:04.:13:07.

and talk the talk. You are not scared of Alan Jones

:13:08.:13:09.

then two we will see! Alun-Wyn Jones, he has become known

:13:10.:13:19.

as the enforcer but doesn't like that tag. Are you scared of him?

:13:20.:13:26.

I don't want to give too many cliches, but he is a natural leader

:13:27.:13:30.

of men and has the right to do so, as well. When he is in that role he

:13:31.:13:34.

is not afraid of putting the cat amongst the pigeons. If he thinks

:13:35.:13:37.

something is right for the team he will do it and wants the team to

:13:38.:13:42.

follow in. That is where he ends his respect. Anyone can say they are a

:13:43.:13:46.

leader of men, but they follow him. He is the right guy, maybe not

:13:47.:13:56.

captain on the field, but he is a leader of the guys and they will

:13:57.:13:59.

follow him. He is in that position because he has earned the right to

:14:00.:14:00.

be there. He is an intelligent bloke, an

:14:01.:14:02.

intelligent player. When he was made captain against

:14:03.:14:05.

Australia everyone was surprised. But they didn't know him. I thought

:14:06.:14:10.

he was a natural captain. He has been brilliant the last couple of

:14:11.:14:14.

years. Though he has not had the captain behind his name tag, he has

:14:15.:14:18.

been as much an influence as any of the captains.

:14:19.:14:23.

Knowing Alun-Wyn Jones personally, there is no one that will do that

:14:24.:14:31.

extra bit of analysis more. He gets respect, and when I say he

:14:32.:14:35.

is a natural leader of men, guys will naturally want to follow him.

:14:36.:14:39.

Let's bring this back to the box, we talked earlier about the narrow

:14:40.:14:43.

defeats in the last four times Wales have played them, losing by no fewer

:14:44.:14:47.

than five points. The last time was in the World Cup, 17-16 was the

:14:48.:14:52.

score, we could have beaten them but for a kick.

:14:53.:14:55.

Tell us about their brutality, the fact they are allegedly the toughest

:14:56.:14:59.

team to play against. Is that how you find them?

:15:00.:15:03.

Definitely. The guys even talk about it on the video themselves, they

:15:04.:15:08.

pride themselves on being big, physical men. They know that and

:15:09.:15:11.

elected to use it. It is not just physical, but mental. They like to

:15:12.:15:15.

go out and they are individuals in the squad. Look at the inclusion of

:15:16.:15:22.

some of the players. You will see them when they come out before the

:15:23.:15:27.

game, they are sticking their chests out, but during the game they are

:15:28.:15:30.

doing all the niggling things trying to wind people up.

:15:31.:15:36.

All of the legitimate stuff, and off the ball stuff?

:15:37.:15:40.

Exactly. Of course, they know their strengths, but it is about

:15:41.:15:43.

controlling what we do. That's what will win the World Cup. We know they

:15:44.:15:47.

will, you physically and when you up off the ball, but cogitate on your

:15:48.:15:52.

role, make sure you are doing your things right.

:15:53.:15:54.

As Michael concentrate on your role. They are going to run at us, they

:15:55.:15:58.

have different dye mentions to the game but at the end of the day the

:15:59.:16:02.

focus is one runners crossing the game line.

:16:03.:16:05.

I am glad you brought that up, because we talked about how the game

:16:06.:16:11.

has involved and they are perhaps a little more subtle and sophisticated

:16:12.:16:17.

than they used to be, but ultimately their game has changed.

:16:18.:16:23.

I spoke to Stephan blanch about how they are preparing. It is the first

:16:24.:16:27.

stop on the tour, don't forget. They want the tour off and running. A lot

:16:28.:16:33.

of the young guys are thinking about the World Cup. It will be a game of

:16:34.:16:37.

attrition. Warren Gatland takes pride in his word being physically

:16:38.:16:40.

fit and powerful so it will be a physical confrontation. I think the

:16:41.:16:43.

Springboks will come the only way they know how. We have some footage

:16:44.:16:48.

of them last autumn. It will be very direct from set pieces. They have

:16:49.:16:58.

called JP Peterson back on the wing. Just defensively, they have this

:16:59.:17:05.

sort of Greenwald that loses constant -- confidence, almost

:17:06.:17:14.

arrogance. They will take you down. Louw for me as one of the players at

:17:15.:17:18.

the heart of things. This is where they will push the scrum, they will

:17:19.:17:23.

drive it and you can see that Louw is at the heart of everything. Very

:17:24.:17:27.

direct, very physical and confrontational and it will be an

:17:28.:17:29.

epic first match. You could have taken those clips

:17:30.:17:33.

from any game in the last ten years. It is just the same. They will come

:17:34.:17:45.

and they will bully you. You And you don't have to be nasty, but you

:17:46.:17:49.

don't have to take a backward step. There are too many cameras now. But,

:17:50.:18:02.

there have to be aggressive. They have got a couple of new players. If

:18:03.:18:12.

the ball is slow, they will kick off it. They will not change their game,

:18:13.:18:21.

but they are very direct. In the World Cup, we should be on them. I

:18:22.:18:31.

think they are a better side now. Let us talk about Wales. The Welsh

:18:32.:18:37.

15 Margie picks itself. A few positions are up for grabs. Would

:18:38.:18:43.

you stand on that? It is a tough one. Dan Biggar is playing well. It

:18:44.:19:01.

is very difficult. It comes down to whether you want to play the whole

:19:02.:19:05.

scarlet in midfield. They all know each other. Whoever he picks, he's

:19:06.:19:17.

picking from form. I thought Dan did exceptionally well last season. I

:19:18.:19:49.

think he deserves a place. I would start with Dan. Maybe bring Rees on.

:19:50.:20:03.

I think Dan should start, I think you are right. The big talking point

:20:04.:20:15.

is probably with Alex Cuthbert out. Whoever we play, we are happy. We

:20:16.:20:24.

will talk a lot about this on extra time. Let us go back to the Pro12.

:20:25.:20:35.

The ospreys took on Munster. The highlight in a few moments. First,

:20:36.:20:39.

the blues against Treviso. Robert Barbieri was making his 100th

:20:40.:20:56.

appearance. The Cardiff Blues deprived of nine Welsh

:20:57.:20:59.

internationals. They were led by Josh Navidi. He has gone straight

:21:00.:21:10.

through the middle. Richard Smith arrives. Lewis Jones looks around.

:21:11.:21:23.

He tried to get the pass away. The Blues have a penalty. Gareth Davies.

:21:24.:21:38.

Like a banana, but safely. Good position for the Blues. Not the most

:21:39.:21:42.

comfortable of scrums. Andries Pretorius as well. Edging forward

:21:43.:21:46.

towards a Treviso try line. Lewis Jones waits patiently as the

:21:47.:21:56.

forwards take it on. The scrum-half gets it. Kristian Dacey is over. Sam

:21:57.:22:07.

Hobbs. That shows how strong the Windies.

:22:08.:22:24.

Matt Berquist. Two Michele Campagnaro. A superb

:22:25.:22:51.

Treviso try. Good-looking scrum for Treviso. Lewis Jones tries to drag

:22:52.:23:00.

him back. He has just lost it at the last second. Good pressure. Back

:23:01.:23:17.

comes Dafydd Hewitt. Lewis Jones to Dan Fish. Andries Pretorius is over

:23:18.:23:26.

in the corner. That is a great try. Oh, that is very harsh. Tobias

:23:27.:23:30.

Botes. Lovely running from Dan Fish. Lewis Jones waits. Sam Hobbs and

:23:31.:23:51.

Josh Navidi together go over. It puts the Blues back ahead.

:23:52.:23:58.

The wind was tough. What we managed was controlling the territory.

:23:59.:24:11.

The ospreys travelled to Munster with confidence.

:24:12.:24:33.

Good work by Lewis. They win a penalty. Matthew Morgan succeeds.

:24:34.:24:45.

The ospreys are back into it. He is over by the post. Was that a

:24:46.:25:10.

proper scrum? It was incomplete. I wonder what the decision will be

:25:11.:25:16.

this time. It is not a try, much to the crowd's dismay.

:25:17.:25:23.

Bishop again. Richard Fussell in support. That is a Munster try line

:25:24.:25:29.

in the background. He is about to meet a short. What

:25:30.:25:41.

will a decision be? Did they cross the line? Let us have another look.

:25:42.:25:46.

I think there is a double movement there. Yes, the referee confirms

:25:47.:26:05.

that. They move it up to the left. Possibly a late tackle the. Hanno

:26:06.:26:17.

Dirksen. This is the substitute, JJ Hanrahan. That opens it up. We are

:26:18.:26:25.

into the last few seconds of this game. Can the Ospreys salvage

:26:26.:26:33.

something from it? A penalty kick is coming, I think. Matthew Morgan, in

:26:34.:26:41.

what will be the last kick of the game. Can he kelly teen? Yes, he

:26:42.:26:50.

can. Munster will stay top of the table.

:26:51.:26:57.

Perhaps we have picked something up. Whether we deserved it, I don't

:26:58.:27:05.

know. Not much will be on display. Conditions played a part. A losing

:27:06.:27:15.

bonus point. I think it will be precious. You have two pick-up point

:27:16.:27:21.

anywhere. Particularly with Munster. Remember, the Ospreys have lost a

:27:22.:27:27.

lot of players to the internationals. I would be thinking,

:27:28.:27:42.

I don't fancy that fixture. It is a tough time for the Welsh region. If

:27:43.:27:58.

you look at the other side, it is tricky. When I looked at the Blues

:27:59.:28:05.

sheet, with all the youngsters, and then the Italians, there have

:28:06.:28:11.

realised, you have to tough it out a little bit. The Blues will be happy

:28:12.:28:24.

that they did have a young squad. They will be very happy. When you

:28:25.:28:31.

played the way to a weakened side, what is the mentality of a younger

:28:32.:28:38.

set of players? Do you just go thinking, damage limitation? It is a

:28:39.:28:47.

time for younger guys to put their hands up and claim their position.

:28:48.:28:54.

Maybe from a coach's point of view, you have to go there and try to pick

:28:55.:29:04.

up that bonus point. Great credit to the guys on the team. Woman onto the

:29:05.:29:14.

premiership now and a round-up. - - moving on.

:29:15.:29:24.

They came from behind to secure a win.

:29:25.:29:35.

Swansea were hoping for a win. Brian Thomas's yellow card proved too much

:29:36.:29:42.

for the visitors. Newport got a much-needed win

:29:43.:29:56.

yesterday, piling on the pressure from start to finish. One yellow

:29:57.:30:07.

card and one red card further added to the misery for Bridgend.

:30:08.:30:21.

Crisp and field scored the first here. Carmarthen's lead at the top

:30:22.:30:29.

is further cemented. The back to the Pro12 and highlights

of fried 's game between dragons and Leinster.

:30:51.:30:54.

The defending champions arrived at Rodney Parade without 17 of Irish

:30:55.:30:59.

internationals. The Dragons made eight changes to

:31:00.:31:03.

the team that lost to the Ospreys, with Lewis Evans captaining the

:31:04.:31:04.

side. John Cooney was then placed back

:31:05.:31:20.

under pressure and then taken by Richie Rees.

:31:21.:31:26.

Dominic Ryan was the one who came down in a deep -- in a heap.

:31:27.:32:05.

REFEREE: that was dangerous play and it's a yellow card.

:32:06.:32:15.

But to be aggressive, not passive. John Cooney tries to do. Under.

:32:16.:32:22.

There is an injured man, Leinster are a man short.

:32:23.:32:29.

It could be what -- it could well be Aaron Dundon who led that charge.

:32:30.:32:45.

Noel Reid - they are just starting to look a little bit more

:32:46.:32:50.

threatening. The Dragons have not been able to do

:32:51.:32:55.

numbers. Zane Kirchner, men outside, and Noel

:32:56.:32:59.

Reid canters through. That is a very, very well worked try.

:33:00.:33:10.

The crowd are celebrating, but it was early, because the whistle had

:33:11.:33:23.

gone, clearly. Pressure from John Cooney, again it

:33:24.:33:43.

is available. It has spilled out and the chance has gone on for Dragons.

:33:44.:33:48.

Leinster only have to clear the decks, John Cooney does, and the

:33:49.:33:54.

Dragons have gone mighty, mighty close.

:33:55.:33:59.

The guys are very disappointed, they have worked hard I have thanked them

:34:00.:34:02.

for their effort and that is all you can ask. It is up to you how well

:34:03.:34:10.

you play, and unfortunately unforced errors was what did for us tonight,

:34:11.:34:16.

which was unfortunate. Elsewhere this weekend, Glasgow got

:34:17.:34:21.

back to winning ways with a hard-fought win over Connacht at the

:34:22.:34:25.

sports ground, and it backing behind to beat Zebre at Murrayfield.

:34:26.:34:40.

Sean, we were at Rodney Parade on Friday night, and the manager looked

:34:41.:34:48.

pretty despondent there. Given what you said earlier about

:34:49.:34:51.

internationals being away, would the Dragons have targeted when win

:34:52.:34:55.

there? Definitely, their home form has been

:34:56.:34:58.

very good. They have been rubbing their hands at the time of year they

:34:59.:35:02.

have been playing Leinster, and really it was a run fault. Handling

:35:03.:35:07.

errors were too high on the night. As Michael it was their own fault.

:35:08.:35:12.

They were suckered into that yellow card for Adam Jones and the one

:35:13.:35:16.

chance Leinster had, they took it. That is what the good teams do, even

:35:17.:35:21.

in the autumn period. The pick-up points on the road and that is why

:35:22.:35:24.

it is important to home form is good enough.

:35:25.:35:28.

it is important to home form is There was a special dinner at muddy

:35:29.:35:31.

parade during the week to celebrate one of the most remarkable

:35:32.:35:35.

achievements in Welsh rugby. -- at Rodney Parade.

:35:36.:35:41.

It is autumn in Wales, the time of year 20 come from a long way away to

:35:42.:35:48.

give us a beating. There has been the odd highlight. Llanelli beat New

:35:49.:35:50.

Zealand, though they hardly mention it. 50 years ago to the day,

:35:51.:35:58.

somewhere near this very spot, John Uzzell dropped the goal that beat

:35:59.:36:04.

Wilson Whinneray's All Blacks. Gathered in that room up there, the

:36:05.:36:09.

class of 63 have come to celebrate that magical day.

:36:10.:36:14.

For the first time ever, and All Blacks side have gone down to

:36:15.:36:22.

Newport. Inspired by their captain, Brian

:36:23.:36:25.

Price... 50 years, and it's my birthday. I

:36:26.:36:30.

have every reason to remember my birthday. What I great present I had

:36:31.:36:36.

in 1963. Fly half, David Watkins!

:36:37.:36:40.

To be part of the side that was to play against them was incredible. Of

:36:41.:36:44.

course, to win the game at the end of the day was sensational and has

:36:45.:36:47.

always lived with me. Right centre, John Uzzell.

:36:48.:36:52.

Don Clarke, Colin Meads, Wilson Whinneray, Kel Tremain... They were

:36:53.:36:59.

full of stars. To play against the All Blacks was a dream, really.

:37:00.:37:04.

It was a midweek game played on a Wednesday afternoon, and they

:37:05.:37:08.

streamed down from the valleys to support their boys.

:37:09.:37:12.

No room at Rodney Parade this afternoon.

:37:13.:37:15.

I didn't go to work that day, that shows how important it was. I had

:37:16.:37:20.

the day off to play in this match. Everything was focused on that day.

:37:21.:37:28.

I actually remember quite a lot about it. Funny about New

:37:29.:37:31.

Zealanders, we remember the losses more than the wins.

:37:32.:37:37.

History told us that there were no easy games in Wales.

:37:38.:37:40.

This is it, the famous war dance, the Hakka.

:37:41.:37:45.

We just did not fire a shot on the day and were well beaten. We were

:37:46.:37:49.

probably a bit underprepared for what was going to hit us. The Welsh

:37:50.:37:54.

passion and the way they play the game.

:37:55.:37:57.

And through come the new port forwards, there is one of the props,

:37:58.:38:02.

David Jones. Dai Watkins cut a few keepers even

:38:03.:38:07.

in the muddy conditions. As only he could do. -- cut a few capers.

:38:08.:38:16.

Right then into the 25... His job was to put the ball down the

:38:17.:38:21.

diagonal, meeting Don Clarke run towards the touchline, and David

:38:22.:38:28.

steps to it for all of 15 minutes! After 15 minutes he set off on his

:38:29.:38:33.

own 22. Here goes Watkins on the outside

:38:34.:38:39.

break! Of course, now we were running

:38:40.:38:43.

forward and the All Blacks had to turn, it meant that we won the rock.

:38:44.:38:49.

Bob Prosser took the ball, ran with it and threw it out to me.

:38:50.:38:55.

The next thing I looked, years stepping inside, what is he doing? !

:38:56.:39:01.

And I had just dropped the ball, it was just instant.

:39:02.:39:06.

Everybody was anticipating, is it going over or not two everyone for

:39:07.:39:11.

that split second stood and watched this poll wobbling its way towards

:39:12.:39:15.

the crossbar. It wasn't until I heard the crowd I

:39:16.:39:21.

realised the ball had gone over. He had probably cleared it by about

:39:22.:39:25.

six inches. Instead of me going across and

:39:26.:39:29.

giving it a rocket for not putting Dennis in the corner, I had to slap

:39:30.:39:31.

him on the back and say well done! All of New Zealand know about

:39:32.:39:49.

Newport, because they beat the All Blacks.

:39:50.:39:55.

A magnificent achievement from Newport, and if you want to see more

:39:56.:40:00.

of that there is an extended version of that feature online.

:40:01.:40:07.

Jonathan, where does that rank in the annals of history?

:40:08.:40:11.

It is up there with the best. Even in Llanelli?

:40:12.:40:16.

To beat the All Blacks, right, all international players have tried.

:40:17.:40:24.

Whenever anyone beats the All Blacks, they have a celebration.

:40:25.:40:29.

That is how special it is, because it is very rare.

:40:30.:40:32.

Still talking about it 50 years on, and rightly so.

:40:33.:40:35.

We haven't got the All Blacks for Wales this autumn, South Africa next

:40:36.:40:39.

as we mentioned earlier. We have a few moments to talk about selection

:40:40.:40:43.

headaches, one which will be giving Warren Gatland some sleepless nights

:40:44.:40:48.

is Gethin Jenkins, probably the man in possession. Your old colleague,

:40:49.:40:52.

Paul James, possibly a better scrummage option?

:40:53.:40:59.

Yes, Gethin Jenkins is Warren Gatland's number one. We talked

:41:00.:41:01.

earlier about Warren rewarding players for what he'd -- they do.

:41:02.:41:07.

Paul has to play out of his skin in bat so he can be there. Especially

:41:08.:41:14.

with the power of South Africa. -- play out of his game in Bath. I have

:41:15.:41:20.

watched Paul this year, and I think the loose-heads are in a fitting

:41:21.:41:25.

more so than the tape heads and he is taking advantage.

:41:26.:41:29.

He is a good tackler, so I think Paul would be my choice.

:41:30.:41:33.

The bench have been important. Gethin Jenkins on the bench, he

:41:34.:41:36.

comes on and is a world-class player.

:41:37.:41:40.

The good thing is, both guys are on form, both deserve to be there, so

:41:41.:41:45.

if one comes on, it'll just strengthen the team.

:41:46.:41:48.

It is the same with the fullback, Cuthbert is out. You try someone

:41:49.:41:54.

like Walker, or Williams, someone who is playing well?

:41:55.:42:00.

He has played on the wing a lot of times for Wales.

:42:01.:42:03.

There are only two specialist wingers in this squad.

:42:04.:42:08.

They have to put width on it, that is what they have to do, move and

:42:09.:42:15.

spread the side about. The All Blacks captain said even in

:42:16.:42:18.

the championship this year they are massive, but if you move about they

:42:19.:42:25.

do blow-up about ten minutes into the half. It will catch up to you,

:42:26.:42:28.

if you are about to size it will catch up to you. Wales have to play

:42:29.:42:33.

the basics well, they have to move well, and I think outside the number

:42:34.:42:39.

13 channel, the fullback has to hit lines and ask questions of the South

:42:40.:42:41.

African midfielder. It will be very interesting.

:42:42.:42:46.

One thing we have not picked up on, the timing of the season. For them

:42:47.:42:50.

it is the end of the season, for our guys it is the middle. There will be

:42:51.:42:53.

a couple more niggles in their team, they will be tired, they are looking

:42:54.:42:58.

to get these games out of the way to have their time. We have to exploit

:42:59.:43:01.

that and start strong as we have done in the past, we did it in 2010.

:43:02.:43:08.

Are the battle hardened or tired? Yes! They are battle hardened, you

:43:09.:43:14.

have to watch it. You see these boys in training and it takes its toll.

:43:15.:43:20.

Sam was saying he has felt the best since the World Cup.

:43:21.:43:24.

We have a second row, Ian Evans has not played for a while, he must be

:43:25.:43:29.

fresh. They are second best in the world,

:43:30.:43:32.

and they will take some beating. If we play well we can beat them.

:43:33.:43:37.

We have to leave it there, but we will continue this debate in earnest

:43:38.:43:41.

on Scrum V extra time, which starts as soon as this programme finishes.

:43:42.:43:45.

Make sure you tune in for more rugby chat and next Saturday all eyes will

:43:46.:43:49.

be focused on the Cathedral of Welsh rugby. Good night.

:43:50.:43:55.

It is that time again. Every year we come. A pilgrimage. Because, in this

:43:56.:44:05.

earth, we believe. In this errors, our dreams are harvested. We are of

:44:06.:44:07.

this land. Wherever we sit, we are behind them.

:44:08.:44:20.

And on this soil, side-by-side they stand, rooted like giant trees.

:44:21.:44:28.

And the earth beneath these men vibrate to the rhythm of the beating

:44:29.:44:33.

heart of a land and people ready to unite. Around this piece of our

:44:34.:44:36.

earth.
