Munster v Blues Scrum V

He came, he saw and he conquered. Going to go the Nick Williams!

Another tackle. Nick Williams has been a nuisance all night. Tonight,

it is Munster's turn to feel pain. Potential cracker tonight between

Munster and the Blues, and there is the big man hoping to wreak havoc

against the club he last played for in 2010. War but in a number of

internationals. The weather has been grim over the past 204I was but it

has cleared up over the past couple of hours but you still imagine the

Blues will keep things tighter than last week against a very direct

Munster side. The sun has come out. Robin sure my guests this evening.

Rob, Nick Williams was one of the main headlines and he lived up to

his billing. He is a young man but very confident. He had a great game

last week. He has showed a lot of promise during his game with the

under 20s, two seasons there. Last week, very dominant pack. It was

great to start in such a way. Technically very good, passing,

kicking game excellent, and he has an eye for a gap as well. Alongside

Lloyd Williams, two very talented scrum-halves. The Scarlets come to

Munster, guilty of going too early, not direct enough. The Blues will

have studied that technique. What will they try to do differently to

my? Munster thrive under turnover. While turnover for Danny's men.

There are a number of ways of getting territory. Last week, we saw

a nice kick from Duncan Weir. Good counterattacking play from the

kicking game. They feel they have earned the right to attack here and

it is a great screen ball from Earle. He gets to be 22 and gets the

territory. The Blues got four tries last week. Looking forward to this

one. Seems to be enjoying the fine weather, Phil. 100,000 welcomes the

Irish Independent Park. Conditions have improved. Still breeze blowing

from right to left. Danny Wilson, I spoke to him earlier on comic he

said expect the Blues to go through Munster before they go around them.

Indeed, conditions so much better than they were. Gethin Jenkins back

to lead the Blues. Michael picked up a knee injury. The rest of the pack

as they were. Another returning Welsh international, Cuthbert, on

the wing and Anscombe gets a start ten. Thomas William stays at

scrum-half. So a strong looking Blues team, won or two minor

adjustments as there have been for the Munster team that are just

making their way out of the changing rooms here in much changed Musgrave

Park, and it is now independent Park here in Cork. The main venue as far

as Munster is concerned but this one certainly developed over the years.

A stand on the far side and a new one we are housed in. But they like

their rugby down here in Cork just as they do in Limerick. As always, a

huge welcome. It is the same Munster pack the played against the Scarlets

last Saturday. The full Irish caps and hollow the captain once again.

Injury sees Conway come in at full-back. Keatley, he is at fly

half, all-time scoring record. Two very strong benches. Standard can

really make an impact and of course Sam Warburton amongst the

internationals on what is one of the strongest looking Blues bench as I

have seen in a while. Ian Davies, the man in charge this evening, and

Craig Evans on one touchline, and O'Connell of Ireland and the other.

Two teams victorious on the opening weekend, the Blues with a bonus

point to boot as well, but an away win for Munster, and they look to

consolidate at home. As usual, they play in their red and white, and the

Blues in their first team strip as Duncan Williams puts up a high ball.

Keatley looking to put it behind Dan Fish. Goes far height rather than

distance. George Earle tries to get over the ball but is dislodged and

Keatley thinks about the outside break and feeds the captain

alongside him. A sprightly start from Munster but a little slip from

Duncan Williams. The Blues to put in at the first scrum and a chance to

sing a very good evening to Phil Davies. Both teams, a great start to

the season. Last week, two Goodwins. The magical there will be a terrific

battle. You have got to match the intensity and minimise their errors.

International players from all countries being drip fed back into

the Pro12. Gethin Jenkins off the bench last week and there to lead

the team this time round. Jenkins, down behind him, who was captain in

his absence. Not straight but straight enough for a feed.

Of a defender, so it will be a Blues throw. Big collisions there early. A

really Lee-Lo coming short. -- low. Scanlon will be 23 in December and

alongside him, blogging will be 20 to the same month. A free run.

Duncan Williams to Keatley. Hands high in the air but well taken by

Dan Fish. Good support coming in from Corey Allen as well, just to

make sure possession is maintained by the Blues.

Good high ball catching early on the game. Good kicks, intelligent

kicking from both teams, but the way Dan Fish goes up, great take, nice

and control, sets a knockout. Good skills from both teams. Later score

from Rodney Parade in the match that kicked off 15, 20 minutes before,

the Dragons are ahead by 5-3. O Donoghue, the number eight. Good

quick ball recycled by Munster, allows login to come onto it at a

good angle to test the defence. Calls for and is awarded the clean

catch. Fish is a safer pair of hands when it comes to kicking. But

Munster trying to keep the tempo up. Good defence by Munster. Very

aggressive defence. We soared this against the Scarlets last week. A

lovely half-break by Anscombe. Filise on halfway. Plenty of

defenders out wide, trying the outrageous dummy. Cuthbert giving

chase the Anscombe's kick and gets there first, superbly done between

the two of them. And Lee-Lo was on hand as well to go into the Munster

22 for the first time. It has been turned, kicked off by Munster

defenders, and Duncan Williams tries to utilise the blindside. Excellent

work by O'Donnell. Intelligent play from O'Donnell. They have been very

selective in terms of challenging the ball in the middle of the field

between the 15. They are trying to get bodies on their feet are

challenging and the wide area. Superb run by Dan Fish. But James is

there now. Good counter by the Blues. Williams has two men on his

outside. Has not quite got there. Puts out with help from Sweden. Both

teams looking sharp. One of Fish's and James's verite. To be better

Munster, really good work. Second one of the game I believe. Munster

are wasting no time at all on the lineouts. A couple of good runs. It

would be good for Cuthbert's confidence, which was lacking at

times last year. Lovely prop up the Corey Allen. Great continuity from

the Blues, lovely off-loading going on. Fish again involved. Tom James

goes all the way, and that is a great score for Tom James and the

Blues. They threatened earlier with a counter, this time they finished

off, superb try by Tom James. Great movement there again by the Blues.

But as impressive as well as they are feeling the field well, lots of

attacking options, and Dan Fish and Tom James have really come into

their own. A great finish by Tom. Great start by the Blues, exactly

what they want to come away with from an away team perspective, you

need to start the Blues have given themselves here, fantastic start.

Tom James rounding as net is eager to the posts to make the task that

much easier for Anscombe. And he duly obliges. And the Blues after a

7-point lead. Here we see Tom again. Great score. One of the most

vulnerable times in the game, when you're coaching as well and biting

your nails, catch the restart, back in the Munster half. The crowd

silenced by the early Blues strike. That is a very good return from

Williams. He will be well pleased with that. The referee... His 50th

game tonight. Holland. You can see Halle Munster

reply. Advantage being played against the Blues. Lovely pick-up by

Sweden and support was there. And that would be so disappointing for

the Blues. The give away a score like that. Danny will be

disappointed with that, fantastic play. As we can see here, Munster

come round the corner and a real intelligent kick by Keatley.

Sweetnam, a good finish by Conwy. A great reply by Munster. Great

technique. Going to the right shoulder of the defender Andy

off-load back on the inside, great play, good play by their winger. The

full-back, good finish. Good try. Very well taken try. Sweetnam did

not get up on the kick at any stage, it bounced nicely into his hands are

no great off-load. The Blues would be very disappointed that it is so

easy for the home team. Let us see if his kick is as good as his chase.

Straight down the middle from Keatley, as you would expect. And it

is a square. -- will square. Great control of the ball, beautiful

sidestep in an off-load, back inside to the full-back. Two high-quality

tries, good start game. Good follow-up as well Anscombe's kick.

Nick Williams. A great game last week after a forgettable opening

where he missed a couple of easy takes and a fairly quiet dozen

minutes so far this evening. Nothing wrong with that, says Ian

Davies, so another turnover for Munster. Presented Cuthbert with the

interception. An unexpected ball almost worked against Munster. That

was unfortunate. Great work by the Munster forward there to come from

the inside of the ruck on the defensive position, and Paul

Williams under pressure. -- put. James Cronin, Scannell and Ryan in

the Munster front row. Gethin Jenkins, Dacey and Filise. It has

gone against Ryan. A battle on the front row. The Munster guys, they

are pretty young, lots of potential. When you look at Gethin Jenkins, one

of the most experienced props in world rugby, and Filise... 39

officially! I debate that. But one of the strongest men, unbelievable

strength. It will be a good battle. And Dacey is a huge hooker with huge

potential. Intriguing battle there. The Blues coming up the right side

of the scrum. Anscombe with a couple of

conversions when he came off the bench last week. Starts off with a

conversion and a penalty this week. Sweetly struck by Gareth Anscombe to

edge the Blues back ahead. Two quality goal kickers on display.

Keatley third in the point-scoring. Prolific, two prolific point

scorers. We heard that the Dragons were ahead unlike last week, it is

Pat Howard who got the first try of the evening. Dragons ahead by 5-3.

Conway safely underneath it. The rest of the team is going up. Nick

Williams comes flying down. Keatley the Scannell, who loses his grip on

it, just as the Munster advantage was gone, and that means a Blues

scrum. Showed how effective... When you have your backfield organise, a

great kick. Most of the high balls have been taken up until now. A good

challenge from Conwy, drops the ball. They fuelled those high balls

because it does obviously provide opportunities for the attack. A

great example because this year in particular, the referees are

concentrating on those clashes because we have seen people hurt

badly in the air, but I was a perfect example of two players going

up, legitimate, yes Nick Williams came back down but nothing wrong

with it. It was a good challenge, good contest and on that occasion

Munster came out on top but a little bit of a spill by Scannell, who went

back for the scrum. The last time the two front rows went down, it was

Gethin Jenkins who came on against John Ryan. This time, they stay up

long enough to get the ball away. Conway has had a busy evening so far

and more for him to do. Good pace by Sweetnam. Away from that touchline.

The ball went backwards. The game is being played by quite a pace by both

teams. They are calling for more defenders on the far side, are the

Blues. Here is a good counterattacking chance. It is a bit

narrow, could have gone wider sooner maybe. Anscombe is forced to kick. I

wonder if Tom Williams had just got that out rather than go for the

break, if there would have been a chance for a James run. It has gone

now. Fish comes at the halfway. It is a very static though. Nothing

Filise can do except take the hit and hope the cavalry arrives. They

fly out their defence. Good defending, and looking to

counter again. Both teams eager to use possession as best they can.

Some testing kicks going up as well. That was a great setup and kick,

great position for Munster. It will not go out of play. Lovely ruck.

Great deft hands by Allen and more than decent clearance kick by

Cuthbert. He started the game well, Cuthbert. He has not been truly

spectacular, but he has brought those high balls, good kick there,

looking lively. It is good to see him. But that take thereby Sweetnam

was outstanding after a great kick. When they get into this middle

third, defensive middle third, then the ball slowly looking for that

box-kick to retrieve possession. The quality of the kick and chase has

been excellent from Munster. As soon as I say that... Enclosed a knock-on

an advantage Williams to Callaghan. Right up to the 22. Lovely pick-up

on the hoof. Navidi, looking to get over the ball. Great work, superb

work by Navidi, wins the penalty for the Blues and prevents the quick

ball of Munster but they so want this evening. Another fantastic turn

by Navidi. That is his forte. They have got some of the best tacklers.

A great place by Ryan. Great collisions. We can see Navidi been

very aware, staying on his feet. A great turnover. Dacey has stayed

down. He is up on his feet now. The last thing they need is Dacey

staying down. They are ready for a line-out. Great attacking position

at halfway, perfect. Midway through the first half and a very

entertaining" we have had, very well taken try apiece. Jenkins with the

line-out ball. Scannell solid in defence again.

His arm pointing to a Blues advantage, and they want the

penalty. Good play. Go back to the short side. You get an opportunity

to expose your position, your front row forward. You get your hookers

props in that position at the front of the line-out and good play by

Thomas Williams there, good setup, a well constructed penalty opportunity

to put the Blues further ahead. Considering the awful weather we

have had all day here, conditions excellent at the moment! I was

thinking that. My umbrella did not seem a good investment although it

did this afternoon. Very firm underfoot, excellent for the

kickers, but not quite helping Anscombe on that occasion as he hit

a wide. That is his range. By the looks of that kick. The pictures in

great condition. The picture is fantastic. -- pitch.

A deep pass to Fish. A knock-on, I parried by Ian Keatley. I am not

sure what he was trying there. Fishy hits this one and done macro gives

it a bit of a boot. I will give him the benefit of the doubt by saying

he is protecting his face. Nevertheless, he puts the Blues on

the 50 meter line, a great attacking opportunity, two big centres. Tom

James on the inside option. They are trying to get penetration or good

gain line. Ironic cheers used to be a Munster

favourite at one time. A good scrum. Unlucky. Didn't quite

get the ball. You like to get it to your right foot sometimes. A good

scrum by the front five. It is half-time at Rodney Parade and the

Dragons leading by 11 points to six. They will be hoping for a few more

tries in the second half, I dare say, especially at Zebre are

anything like they were last week. Let's hope so. The Scarlets are also

playing in Edinburgh tonight. We will keep you in touch with that one

as well. 3-3, I believe, the latest score. Conway follows his kick again

putting fish under pressure. Good support from Ellis Jenkins though.

That is why the Blues are still in possession.

Forward from Fish. Craig Evans on the far side just telling Ian

Davies. Some intelligent kicking from both teams. I think Sweetman

got a bit of a hand in there may be. This was good play by Munster. It

means the opening side have got to come up. It isolates the full-back

because your scrum-half cannot quite get into the pocket to support the

full-back. Some smart kicking by Munster. They came out on top. As we

can see, a second kick for Edinburgh. They have just edged

ahead of the Scarlets, six points to three.

Ronan O'Mahony has come in from the far win, standing alongside Ian

Keeley, directly behind the scrum. Andrew Conway has also come up to

the Munster back division -- Ian Pete Lee. They went get a chance to

release that. Played by Billy Holland. To

Scannell. Nice interplay between the two centres. Callahan crawling

forwards towards that try line. In goes the other Scannell brother,

Niall, the hooker. John Ryan is there. Munster have their tails up

now in the Blues 22. Good pressure, good defence by the Blues. That will

be a simple three points if that is what Billy Holland and Ian Pete

leaked so desire. -- Ian Keatley. Again, the centres combining

beautifully there. It is very intense. They are trying to do a

little snipers crawl on the floor to keep the momentum of the ruck going

forward. That was some good play and gives Keatley and opportunity. I

remember a game once, at Heineken cup game where the weather was

belting down. I think there were 20 odd phases of pick and go, pick and

go. Very reminiscent of the old Munster, that passage of play there.

Rob Jones will remember that day as well I think.

The simplest of kicks for Ian Keatley on the half-hour mark just

about. All square at 10-10. Still has some company. He is with Danny

Wilson. -- Phil. How happy where you with that tactic of going round? We

have definitely made some inroads I think. There is some kicking going

on tonight. When we kick longer, that is when we can run and cause

problems. We have some big mismatches but we have to generate

that and deal with that kicking game. Anyone coming off second best

in that department at the moment? We are escorting not particularly well

in terms of trying to create legal blocking lines and that is putting

us under pressure. Once you get those, that defence is disorganised.

Blues have a penalty again. There goes Tomos Williams with a quick tap

and go. Tom James trying to get alongside him. Lovely hands by Nick

Williams. The pass was dying on him. Gethin Jenkins. Dacey. Anscombe

looks inside and then goes outside to Rey Lee-Lo.

Good build-up by the Blues once again. One defensive line from

Munster. Not committing to the breakdown, just keeping defenders

out. McAuley Cook keeps the pressure on Munster.

The advantage still being played in the Blues' favour. Eventually, Ian

Davies comes all the way back for Dave O'Callaghan's high tackle. And

again, signs of good attacking rugby from the Blues, although very

organised Munster defence. It did feel like Navidi got a good turnover

early on. He is making great yardage. He is a tough guide to

stop. We talk about the sister intended ...

If you look at this facet of the Blues play last week, they scored

some fantastic tries. One was a great tried by Macauley Cook. A

great arrowhead going forward. Let's see if we can replicate that

tonight. A crucial period coming up to half-time. Ian Davies wants James

Cronin out in the middle of the line. He wants a gap there. Great

position for the Blues. Up goes Navidi. Takes it at the second

attempt. Kristian Dacey latches on behind Asda 's Gethin Jenkins. Now

it is close to the touchline. George Earle goes in in support of the

hooker. Tomos Williams, a short ball to Rey Lee-Lo. They are screaming

for defenders out wide, Munster, but it is kept tight by the Blues first.

Right on the Munster try line. Dacey ready for another pick and drive

round the corner. Tomos Williams scored last week. He is very close

this week. The Blues are claiming it and Tomos Williams may have got a

second try for the Blues. It looked on the line that.

Ian Davies is happy with the grounding but was there an

obstruction allowing Tomos Williams to get there is the question the TMO

hast to answer. In fact, it is Ellis Jenkins, not

Tomos Williams who got there. Just watch Gethin Jenkins on John Ryan.

Ellis Jenkins got in just ahead of the scrum-half, got over the try

line. But was Gethin Jenkins preventing John Ryan from getting

the tackle in? It was Gethin Jenkins' right arm.

That try is not going to stand. It is obstruction.

It is you who has made contact with red. It is obstruction. Not the

happiest of persons at the best of times. He certainly will not be now.

I think he is less than impressed with that. We have seen more blatant

that is the call. It didn't clean him out but there was enough contact

their say referee TMO to prevent John Ryan to get their will stop to

be fair to John Ryan, he was aware of what Gethin Jenkins was trying to

do as well. Edinburgh have got a converted try.

They lead 13-6. It is all square here at independent Park.

That is the first bad tactical kick that Duncan Williams has put in. A

word of apology from the former Irish under 21 scrum-half.

It has been a good game so far, I fancy. There have been a lot of

really good technical skills on show. Some of the kicks we have

mentioned, some of the breakdown work, quick presentation of the

ball, some good attacking plays, some ferocious defence allocation.

It has been a good game. In the last five or six minutes, there have been

a few errors creeping in. The physicality of the game is providing

that. There is another example of two

props being intelligent. Macauley Cook just getting a nose

plugged. They can give it some closer attention in a few minutes

time. Great run by Rey Lee-Lo. Tom James

on the inside. Tom James is to quick for O'Donoghue! That is a second

superb try for Tom James. What a break by Rey Lee-Lo. Great inside

shoulder support run and Tom James gets a second of the evening and try

number 37 in the league. You can see Matt Sheraton there. A great ball of

the top by George Earle. Some great running off the ball. Rey Lee-Lo,

great footwork through the hole. Tom James, inside shoulder. Great line

break. Tom James has trapped well this evening on a few occasions. He

just deserved a superb pass. Tom James was ninth in the records, he

has overtaken Nikki Walker and now has 37.

Conversion supplied by Gareth Anscombe. That is a huge boost for

the Blues just before half-time. Fantastic. You always want to get a

score before half-time, particularly away from home. Matt Sheraton will

be delighted with that. That was an excellent score. Great ball running

by the forwards and great ball usage by the backs. It is Mike Allen who

got the try for Edinburgh. It was 6-6 but the Allen try means

Edinburgh lead 13-6 against the Scarlets. Edinburgh who lost to the

Blues last weekend, and the Scarlets lost to Munster. They have switched

position this weekend. It is an important defensive set

this for the Blues. Get up in the air and challenge for the line-out.

Get off the line and make the tackles and reorganise your defence,

get bodies on their feet, to try and keep Munster out for the last 2.5

minutes of this half. It is a Blues ball. I blew the whistle for that

reason, I don't need you to tell me. Macauley Cook gets up well. A cheap

penalty to give away for Munster. Gratefully received by the Blues

though! Absolutely. Rassie Erasmus has left his seat in

the stands. He is leaning against an advertising hoarding. He will be

pleased and pleased with certain aspects of the game. It is about

getting to the right area of the field and control possession.

Another great take by Macauley Cook. He was coming under pressure in the

air. The Munster line is up so quickly. That is why Navidi has

delayed the ball back yards behind the game nine. Brew good line speed

by defence. Niall Scannell, in the final minute

of the first half. The quality in the air has been

excellent this evening. All knocked on. There wait to be time for a

scrum. That is the end of a very absorbing first half's play. A

couple of great tries by Tom James and one by Andrew Conway as well.

Both sides trying to play with the tempo, looking to keep ball in hand,

but there has also been some very good kick chase as well, all the

elements adding to a very entertaining first half. But the

Blues will be more than happy to have come here and not just held

their own, but to be leading at half-time, and the half-time score

is 17-10 in the Blues' favour. This is how the first half panned out.

STUDIO: It was an all action first quarter. The Blues came out firing.

They eventually got over in Tom James. Some fantastic footwork and

defending. A clever kick from Munster, a quite fortuitous bounce

but Andrew Conway the beneficiary of that one. Munster writeback within

two minutes of the Blues scoring that opening try. A fantastic line

by Tom James, an inside pass by Rey Lee-Lo. A bit of blocking from Nick

Williams as Rob will discuss in a few minutes time. The Blues

comfortably in front at half-time. The possession stats heavily in the

Blues favour. The Blues, we said at the top, Rob,

a dream start to the season, and they are really carrying on where

they finished off this evening? Yes, they have been very impressive.

Their game has been fantastic and it looks like the style of play that

the Blues demonstrated last week is starting to come through again this

week. We have not seen as much of Nick Williams in terms of his ball

carrying, but their off-loading game, the pace they want to play out

is certainly coming through. There is a real hunger and appetite there.

The off-loads are coming thick and fast. They are playing in a fairly

direct manner as Danny Wilson said they would, but they're getting past

the first-line defence time and again.

It is for the opportunity. You played tight initially but if an

opportunity arises, you take it. You talk about heads up rugby and I

think the Blues are playing with their heads up at the moment. They

are getting on the front foot and that is key. If you can get the

off-loads going and put you on the front foot, you will always create

opportunities. Tom James is the region's highest try scorer. He has

added a couple more to his tally tonight. Munster were at sixes and

sevens and the Blues showing a critical edge. If you go to Munster

you can always expect a kick in battle. Almost a Gaelic football

type game. They are off and running. Dacey is a good player, a loose

player. Tom James looking sharp. This was a warning sign for Munster.

Look how the Blues players are back with intent. The winners are

involved, Dan Fish is involved. There were some lovely interplay as

he rightly said, following best. What I like is Tom James identifies

omissions match with Scannell, the hooker. You want your players to be

doing this all of the time. It was a great try and a great start for the

Blues. That is the way all good winners should play. If you see a

hooker in front of you, you take him on? Yes, if you get on the front

foot and get beyond defences, then you have a quick ball and you move

it away from that breakdown as soon as possible. They are playing with

their heads up, they are looking at where the opportunities might be,

and because they are getting parity, more than parity up front, and they

put themselves in good positions, they manage those final

opportunities. Both teams employing similar tactics when it comes to the

kicking game, Danny Wilson saying maybe Munster where edging that

battle. There are a variety of kicks you coach. Munster went a little

more aerial and it played dividends for them early on in the half. High

contest with Nick Williams. Any loose ball and Munster sees on it.

It was a great kick from Ian Keatley. Anything can happen with

the bounce. Great reaction from Conroy, the guy we have highlighted.

It was a great off-load. They were straight back in the game but it was

cagey kicking battle. Rob, you made the point that there is not much in

the way of deep kicks for territory as we often see in places like

Munster. The conditions weren't great to three hours ago. It has

brightened up now. What do you make of that kicking battle? Over the

years, there has been a lot of kicking downfield. It is all about a

line chase and putting pressure on the opposition into rain territory.

Have seen from both Munster and Cardiff, it is about getting the

ball in the air. As Sean says, it is the variety of the kicking.

Identifying space behind the back line and with the bounce of the ball

you have an opportunity. We have seen in step sees on the

opportunities which have come their way. It is a really good battle at

the moment -- we have seen Munster sees an the opportunities. On the

stroke of half-time is almost the perfect time to score a try and Tom

James showing his predatory instincts again but it was the

build-up to the try which showed some good instincts as well. It was

the shortened line-out. Nick Williams has been such an important

man. He does take two or three defenders and that creates the

opportunity for Rey Lee-Lo. He finds the space. Great tracking by Tom

James on the inside. The support of the Blues players has been first

half. They mentioned Matt Sherratt. He has been working on that. They

are far better side in terms of organisation than they were last

season. OK. Let's have a look at the other games going on this evening.

The Scarlets are now 26 behind against Edinburgh. Not a good night

at the office from them. We will get an update from the Dragons first.

Just one try from them against Zebre at Rodney Parade this evening. That

kicked off a little bit earlier than our beach again this evening. Pat

Howard was the scorer. He scored last week on his debut for the

Dragons. But they may have been hoping for a little bit more at this

stage. And Mike Allen for Edinburgh. Also, Jake Ball has just been

sin-binned so it is a long way back for the Scarlets. They are in action

tonight, the Dragons are in action, we are watching the Blues, Ospreys

played tomorrow. Plenty of coverage coming up this weekend.

Tomorrow, the reigning champions Connacht hope to get off the mark

with the rampant Ospreys standing in their way. And rugby's worst kept

secret is out. Warren Gatland is the lines' coach. But before he handed

the reins to Rob Cowley, he issued this warning. What is going to be

tough for Robert myself is the selection policy. There are couple

of big names who will miss out in the autumn and that will be quite

dramatic. So those are Warren Gatland's words.

It is going to be dramatic. That story has moved on today. The seven

names have been published. It is those players playing outside Wales

who will not be eligible for selection unless they are selected

as one of three wild card picks. They are Dominic De who is playing

for Melbourne Rebels in Australia. We were told that this policy is

going to bite. There has been some dramatic admissions. But you look at

the list, Luke Charteris isn't on it, you assume Faletau is gone to be

safe, Jamie Roberts, George North. Rhys Priestland must be the most

vulnerable. You would think so. I think we need some clarity. We are

bit confused. Nice for Rob Howley to pick it up in the autumn. But a bit

confused, but you are right, how can you leave George North, Roberts and

Faletau? I think the question is, Leigh Halfpenny, some of the other

players playing outside of Wales, they seem to be exempt, I'm not sure

why. I have had a lot of people on social media asking me those very

questions. The WRU didn't want to discuss individual cases. The case

for Charteris is that he wasn't offered a deal from a Welsh region

so he had to seek his livelihood elsewhere and Leigh Halfpenny is

into his third year in Toulon. When that contract runs out, then he will

be a wild card. But you make a sensible point. We thought this

would provide more clarity, but it doesn't seem to have. No, I don't

think it has. Warren Gatland mentioned dramatic in terms of

selection. I don't think there is anything dramatic. Rhys Priestland

unfortunately will probably be the one big name players in double miss

out. But he hasn't Biggeri hugely under Warren Gatland recently. Dan

Biggar is number one, some good players coming through the system as

well. Sam Davies Ospreys playing well. Gareth Anscombe. A lot of

talent that can be fitted in. Falque, time to get back to the

match. Blues and Munster are both back out on the pitch. Before we

crossed back to Cook, a quick word from you. Can the Blues hold onto

the lead? Yes, they can, I think you will be seeing more of the game.

There is no need to risk anything, the plan is working, more of the

same. Good stuff, we shall see. 40 minutes for the Blues to hold onto

this lead and continue their winning start to the season.

COMMENTATOR: Thank you. The just out on the field. There is one change.

Cian Bohane comes into midfield in place of Rory Scannell, who took a

knock just before the end of the first half, when Tom James scored

his and the Blues' second try. Bohane, who is in the a squad for

Munster. Phase for Dolphin rugby club in court. Came off the bench

against Scarlets last week. The Blues as they were. They will keep

these boys as long as the keep going. Changes will be made is

necessary but they want more of the same from the 15 who started the

game. Cory Allen, first recipient in the

second half. Court is not about hunting ground

for the Blues. They are the only team in the Pro12 who have won here

three times. The last one, though, was in 2012-13, Munster enjoyed a

good run against the Blues, getting ten wins from the last 11 games. The

Blues know exactly what they have to do and they did it well in the first

40. Cronin looking for the back door off-load. There is Goggin going for

the break, good tackle by Lee-Lo. Gives the advantage away. Dave Foley

sets it up outside the tragedy. Duncan Williams, inside all to a

pain. Jack O'Donoghue -- to Bohane. Philly again. Up to Keatley. Up goes

the Hail Mary. Comes back on the breeze. In the end, the referee says

no, it is too untidy. Good start by Munster. Some good movement from the

counterattack. The Blues set up nicely within the county do. Just a

bit too much distance. -- within the 22. But that has given Munster and

attacking opportunity. Now they have a penalty and they have a real

opportunity. Good start by Munster. They have turned down what was a

penalty opportunity, three points, in the hunt for five or seven to

draw them level. Jack O'Donoghue comes around, too

much pace, he lost his footing. Good drive forward again from Ryan.

Back comes the ball to James Cronin. Duncan Williams calling for

forwards. Straight out to Bohane. Almost makes it to the trailer.

Great position. Underneath it goes Scannell. That is defensive work by

the Blues. They fail to stay on their feet, the supporting Munster

players. I'm sure Erasmus will be frustrated they got so close and

came away with nothing. Outstanding defence, good tackling. But the way

the Blues were getting off the line, the line speed, the first two or

three defenders off the rock was exceptional. -- the ruck. Put them

under pressure. Great defence. Sam Warburton, another number of

internationals on the Blues bench. -- one of the number. Shingler, the

only one who is not a full international.

It is a matter of when rather than if these days. Plenty of options for

Danny Wilson and the rest of the coaching team to go to as Tomos

Williams puts it up and Tom James was not really go together that one.

-- going to gather. As it came off Tom James, it went straight into

touch, the option of scrum or line-out. I don't think he will be

too disappointed. A pretty accurate kick off Tomos Williams. Again, good

contest in the air. A couple of the influential players

missing for Munster this evening. Conor Murray as well, some of their

key international players still on their break, or injured, whatever

the case might be. One guy who could really influence proceedings is CJ

Stander. You look at the Blues bench, they have some experience and

some real quality. But so do Munster, CJ Stander, great

ball-carrier, very powerful. And there he is, CJ Stander is going to

come on for the injured Tommy O'Donnell. Let's go down to have a

look forward to this we can's proceedings. The Premiership, big

day, the second week of the Premiership, the standard clash is

the brotherly love cast, Merthyr against Cardiff. -- clash. But as

the outstanding game in the permission. We are spoiled for

choice. There is the roundabout cup. But the one I have gone for is

division three East Central, and against tough swell, but will be

some clash. Thank you, Phil. Tommy O'Donnell, Man of the Match last

week, injured this week. Jack O'Donoghue goes on the front, CJ

Stander to lock out that Munster scrum. And a good scrum it is as

well. The first time we have seen the ball... That was a mighty

powerful drive. They went nice and low early on, kept the pressure on,

until you could just see a little glimpse. Look at the loose-head.

Working hard. Very different type of players,

O'Donnell and standards, but such an effective ball-carrier. There could

be a few Munster truck type collisions.

A scrum drive followed by a line-out drive. Munster, it seems, reverting

to type here. Sweetnam where he may have been in

front of Williams. Carried over by Tom James. Gets away with it. Turns

out to be not a bad kick. It has forced them back to their own half.

Here comes Conway. There is Jenkins. Josh Navidi with a tackle. Ryan

offside. The Blues defence comes up quickly. Sweetnam looked pretty

dangerous in the first half. Him and Conway.

Williams again. Space on the outside, maybe. Scannell was there

in the spaces. George Earl throwing himself into

it. Here is giggly again. Good hands by

Bohane. This is concerted pressure from Munster. The Blues have been

under the pump for a good few minutes. Keeping the fenced honest.

-- the defence. Holland and fully combining. -- Foley. Great work from

Munster. Stander lays it back. O'Donoghue is in there.

Claimed an won by the Blues. After all that pressure, the defence

stands firm, excellent work by the Blues defensively. That was quite an

impressive attack by Munster. There is Navidi again, look. Greatly

supported by Jenkins on his inside. It is energy sapping stuff. The

Blues prepare to make a triple substitution. Two on the front row,

Rhys Gill and Scott Andrews, and Sam Warburton, wearing 20, for his first

taste of club rugby of the new season. It is good to see him coming

on. Good to see Rhys Gill back for the Blues as well after a successful

spell at Saracens. Good scrummage, good work around the field. Andrews,

one of the best footballing props you will see. They have to stabilise

that scrum. Give the Blues the platform.

The two props are joined by Nick Williams on the bench, and with

Gethin Jenkins, who took charge last week, Ellis Jenkins for the

remainder of the game. Just over half an hour. You expect them to

manage, Gavin Welby 36 in November. Has had problems with his calves in

the past. He will do what he can. It is a long season, that's for sure.

You have to manage the players. Let's can more -- gets more details

the injuries. Those three substitutions, all preplanned, the

idea simply just fresh legs. Just eight minutes of the second

half for those changes to be made. Will be mighty happy with the

defence. Macauley Cook is on some good line-out balls. In the second

half and the beginning of the second.

They have some big ball-carriers. They brought on Scott Andrews, Rhys

Gill and Sam Warburton. It'll be interesting to see how the attacking

game and the kicking game unfold towards the end of the second half.

It is going to be a Blues line-out, not too much damage done. They are

on the ten metre line. For a moment, it is the wall for the

Blues. The first ten minutes,... The line-out is functioning well

tonight. Macauley Cook, he is only 24, he is very intelligent, good

call. A loose pass again. Couldn't be expected to hold onto it. Jenkins

with a delicate chip. Very intelligent footballer, great

skills. Look at that, beautiful. End over end.

Time off. I think George Earle might be in trouble here.

I think Dave Foley hurt his elbow. That is looking painful.

To me, that is on the neck, that is penalty.

Is it more than just a talking to and a penalty? That is a mighty

relief for George Earle and the Blues, they would not want to go

down to 14, given the pressure they have been under. A sad sight, Dave

Foley departing. Ryan comes on to replace him.

The Scarlets are currently down 20-6 in Edinburgh. They have also lost

Scott Williams, looks like a nasty blood injury but hopefully it won't

be anything to permanent. Let's hope not. There are enough injury -- he

has had enough injuries already, for Afellay. Great take. They are in

danger of losing a line-out. Duncan Williams, incomes Cuthbert.

Loses it on landing. It has worked out. Lovely work by

Conway. Forward to Goggin. Great reaction, to be on the end of it.

Just awareness of what was happening. The final pass, just for

Here comes another Welsh international, Lloyd Williams. He

had to return home early from the tour of New Zealand with a knee

injury, but fully fit, to take over from Tom Williams -- Tomos Williams.

It is good to see Lloyd back. He can kick the ball a mile. Good passer,

gets the ball quickly. Another very, very strong Munster

scrum. Really piling on the pressure. The ball hoped back

illegally. Last time they went for a corner, this time they are going for

gold. Cronin, Scannell and Ryan are certainly putting a shift in the

year. The pressure they are exerting on the Blues front row is

impressive. The last couple of scrums, real pressure. Just good,

low, tight scrummaging. Munster decided they want to come

away with points, they didn't last time, so just get something for all

your endeavour. Absolutely. They are under a lot of pressure.

First points of the second half goal Munster's way. It means a try would

put them back in front. Interestingly, although that Munster

scrum has been going so well, they decide this is the time to make a

change, and Dave Kilcoyne comes on. That is for James Cronin. Also

Matthew Rees has snuck on as well. In seven of Kristian Dacey. --

instead. Still just the one trying for the

Dragons in that other game. Drawing to a close now, Dragons leading

11-6, I'm sure they would have wanted more than that. The Blues

need to get a little bit of control back. They made a few errors,

Cuthbert not being able to field that kick, they just need to exert

more control, get a bit of possession at -- in this area of the

field. Ryan McGowan line-out ball. -- with the line-out ball. Fish has

time to be confronted by a while of red, led by CJ Stander. He has done

well, Dan Fish. He had a fantastic chase stop oh bodies on the ball

quickly, did really well. James brought down by Bohane.

Dan Fish looks back inside. Wrapped up by CJ Stander. Looking to try and

get them all on the turnover but it hasn't worked because they forced

him to ground. A better period of play for the

Blues. Matthew Rees sets it up for them. Rhys Gill once again.

Tom James is first to arrive. Sweetnam. The Blues pushed back to

the 22 once again. Their foray into Munster territory was short lived.

Now they have to do the hard graft again and get themselves out of the

defensive position. Williams taking his time. Getting bodies behind the

ball. Navidi wins it. Get them on the front foot. Lloyd Williams gives

himself room, gets it downfield. Dutifully returns it to the far

corner. That is a beauty. That was a very good kick by Gigli. -- Keatley.

Spectacular forward. There are no losing bonus points in the first

week of the Pro12. The line-out has gone very well this

evening. Penalty for Munster. That is a bit

of a stranglehold by Munster, they are keeping the Blues pinned back

and looking for these mistakes, which rack up the penalties. Far out

this time, though. A chip for the corner. They are going for the

jugular. CJ Stander, the new kid on the block

in international terms. This is a great position for Munster. They are

going round at a rate of knots towards that try-line. Bodies in the

way by the Blues. Scannell tries, but can't quite reach. Desperate

defence from the Blues. Giving Munster at bay for the moment. But

it is wave after wave of attack from the home team. Duncan Williams feeds

the forwards once again. Goggin tries to force his way over. But

just a metre shot from the try-line, Stander... Great tackle by Ellis

Jenkins to keep Stander away but they are getting ever nearer. The

crowds celebrate, but it is a little early yet. Tremendous effort from

the Blues to keep out Munster. Time after time, they are battering at

the door. Duncan Williams tries to borrow his way underneath. No, says

Navidi. Incredible pressure. Kilcoyne waits, Kilcoyne has a go.

And Dave Kilcoyne has got their! The pressure was just too great in the

end. Time after time after time, monster/ battering the try-line, and

it is the replacement prop Kilcoyne who gets the try.

Good start from the line-out. Munster do really well, just to

change the point of the drive, into space, then after that, just sheer

brute force. A good try for the forward. A good

try for the whole team. Getting the centres involved as well. As you can

see here, there is only one way he is going, Kilcoyne. The Blues showed

some great pace in defence but they could not cope in the end. I suppose

it is what they deserve because they have exerted so much pressure in

that third quarter. Absolutely. Some intelligent kicking and some really

robust ball carrying. A slip from CJ standard but not knocked on. He

makes good yardage quickly -- CJ Stander.

Warburton, held up initially, but manages to get the ground.

Strong work by number eight Jack O'Donoghue. Stander, they hold him

up. Donnacha Ryan was there or thereabouts. They have brought an

even greater physical element to this second-half. Donnacha Ryan

looks like an angry man but flipping heck, he doesn't half work hard on

the rugby field. He has been superb. Some thinking to be done by the

Blues' coaching team. They just want to get the platform back they had in

the first half. Good kicking creates an opportunity for Lloyd to put the

ball up and get into a field position. When they get into the

Munster half, it is just patience and ball control and build pressure.

They are either going to get a penalty or the schools will come

again. They haven't had that ball in their hands long enough for those

important places. Munster have just shortened their kicking game little

bit. They get a lot of numbers around the ball catcher, making it

very difficult for the Blues. If it is an error they have a turnover

opportunity. Just over a quarter of an hour remaining. The Munster scrum

comes under pressure. Is this within the distance for Gareth Anscombe?

The Dragons have got their first victory this season. It is only

11-6, still, it is four points and that will be some relief for them.

At good win for them. I was speaking to Kinsey last weekend. They have

been fighting tonight. It is a good victory for them. A positive

approach. A good first win for them. Well done, the Dragons. Scarlets

still trailing by 20 points to nine. They have not been able to make the

most of the two-man advantage yet. The Blues need this. As you can

imagine, it is pretty much on the edge of Anscombe's range.

And the effort proves too great. So Munster keep hold of their 3-point

advantage. That was unfortunate. That was a great scrum by Matthew

Rees. The one and the two put on a lot of pressure to John Ryan to get

a penalty. It is a shame they just couldn't quite get it. Steve

Shingler is on. He is halfway line material. There is Stephen Shingler

and Josh Turnbull has just come on. Two more changes for Munster as

well. Experience in Duncan Casey and Tomas O'Leary at scrum-half.

There they go again. O'Donoghue and CJ Stander getting the turnover

again. I have Matt Sherratt here. Matt,

tell us about the change, Gareth Anscombe and Steve Shingler coming

on? A lot has been said about our bench. Steve Shingler played very

while last week and he feels in form so we have put him on to make a

difference in the last 15 minutes. It is replacing strength for

strength. Are you going to be opening out a bit now? Yes, if we

can generate the right kind of field positions and possession. When we

get through the phases and generate the speed of the ball, at the moment

they are strangling us a little bit and making it difficult to do that.

Hopefully, we will have a period in this game and we can generate some

ball and we have some great attackers on the pitch. Thanks for

Brilliant by Matthew Morgan to Rey Lee-Lo. It is on for Dan Fish. That

is a superb try for the Blues. Brilliant, brilliant breakaway, and

so many good handling skills resulting in a third try for them.

Dan Fish restores the Blues' lead in what is a real ding-dong battle. You

have got to give the Blues defensive chase there. Who is that, Lloyd

Williams? He just over kicks it, over cooks it, sorry. That gives

Matthew Morgan the opportunity. Brilliant support play by Lloyd

Williams and superbly finished off by Dan Fish. He looks very

comfortable there, Dan. A great catch by Matthew. He has great feat,

that boy. Unbelievable. Great awareness by Rey Lee-Lo. Great

composure. Well done, Dan Fish. Tom James is the one taken for Matthew

Morgan to come on. The Blues will be delighted at that try and the

conversion from Stephen Shingler puts the ball back in Munster's

court and the game back in the Blues caught as they lead 24-10. That is

great clinical play. They get an opportunity. That kick was a little

bit too far and allowed Matthew Morgan and those magic feet of his

to create the opportunity for Daniel to score. Well done, the Blues. Back

in the studio in Cardiff, a quick word from Sean Holley. So Ayr yes, a

bold replacement taking Tom James. He just shows a little bit of pace

and feet. He is a magic player. He just showed what he could do in that

first instance. That is exactly why the Blues wanted

him. He could be so lethal and so effective in broken play. Great

support from Lloyd Williams and the rest in setting up the try. Ten

minutes to go. The Blues back in front. It is still less than a score

separating them. There goes the CJ Stander again.

Penalty advantage to Munster as Ian Keatley tries to bring in Goggin.

There is plenty of time if they want to make it in two rights and they

do. The same thing with the kicking. Keatley little bit too long. That

was similar with Lloyd. That needed to be a kick to complete in a way,

that little bit of extra height. The silence is broken as Ian

Keatley's successful kick makes it a 1-point game with just eight minutes

remaining. It is on a knife edge as it has been all game. It was 7-0,

7-7, that became 7-10 and then 10-10. Then 10-17. Now it is 24-23.

It is still anybody's game. Still everything to play for in the last

eight minutes. The Blues in possession. Ellis

Jenkins. McAuley Cook in midfield. Lloyd

Williams to Josh Turnbull. Cory Allen sends it downfield. What

is Keatley's reply? The Blues will be more than happy to see the ball

off the back. Some good build-up play by the Blues. Cory Allen's it

could have gone more to the five metre line. Nevertheless, good

control, I fancy. Not a bad opportunity here to launch an attack

from the halfway. Six minutes remaining. A good take

by Ellis Jenkins, the standing Blues skipper. The man behind him has had

plenty of experience of being skipper in his long and illustrious

career, Matthew Rees. Navidi another pick and go. Steve Shingler sends it

long and high. Well taken by Andrew Conway. A good tackle, Matthew

Morgan. This is where the Blues want to keep

Munster for the remaining five minutes. Tomas O'Leary. Shingler

calls and takes stock now, they could have men out wide. They come

back to the short side. Rey Lee-Lo very close to the top -- touchline

but not over it. Sam Warburton. Who is preventing Munster from getting

their hands on the ball at the moment? Scott Andrews. They don't

want to be isolated is the main thing here. They have to work hard

and support the ball-carrier. Dan Fish struggling as he puts the kick

in. It could be the end of the game for Fish. The Blues are effectively

down 14 men at the moment as Fish is off the field. Well taken by Andrew

Conway. Keeps it in field, to Matthew Morgan. The kicking game

continues, shorter by Morgan looking for space, looking for grass. Darren

Sweetnam, dragged down by Navidi. Good pressure by the Blues, forcing

the handling error, but it was not Don says Davis. CJ Stander in

midfield, looking to accelerate down the middle. Through goes Josh

Turnbull. Great work by the Blues' forwards. Warburton ripping it back

at the end and the kick going through by Lloyd Williams. ) in the

corner is Dan Goldin and precious little he can do except put the ball

out of play and that is wonderful defensive work by the Blues and the

forwards in particular. A good catch by Darren Sweetnam there. Good

Unbelievable timing, considering he has not played a lot of rugby, it is

outstanding. Shingler, real smart cookie -- kicking behind. Just 2.5

minutes for the Blues to hang onto this 1-point lead for what will be

an excellent win for them. A short ball to Rey Lee-Lo. He has

carried well all night, Rey Lee-Lo, superb.

A cross kick against a limping down Fish. He is soldiering on. The Blues

have used up all their replacements. Looks painful, that ankle. He is in

all kinds of trouble. As soon as he put the kick in and he was wincing

in pain. It is his try. He has kept the Blues ahead at the moment. There

were two first half tries. A great turnover there. The Blues will be

happy with that. Only a minute or so to go. Can they run the clock down

from here, the Blues? The game goes into its final minute.

The Blues just a point ahead. Down in Munster's half and Munster can

get backhand on the ball at the moment. Is the remaining 45 seconds.

They have to be careful not to make it an unfair contest. So important

they support players retain. A great example by Josh Turnbull. Great

control. 20 seconds of the game remaining as Matthew Rees goes to

ground. This is what Ireland used to do so well, running the clock down,

and they are having it done to them in their own backyard. The Blues,

tremendous control as it has been for the most part. The game is not

over yet. Now the clock goes red, now the time is up and the ball is

put out of play by Stephen Shingler who belted over the far stand and

that is a very, very impressive win for the Blues, the fourth time they

have won in Cork. They are the only team to do that and they backed up

last week's home win with a bonus point with a really hard-fought win

against an impressive Munster team. An excellent effort by both teams.

Three macro tries to two for the Blues, and just a point in an epic

account, the Blues come away with the spoils. -- an epic encounter.

Let's go down to Phil Steele who is pitch side with Gareth Anscombe.

Gareth, congratulations on the win. How vital was that? That means a lot

to us. I thought we started relatively well. We hurt ourselves

for large amounts of the second halves but the boys showed great

character to come to court and get a win. It is massive for the club. It

has not been done for a while. It is a great start to the season for us.

What about Munster? Berwick big team. They have the home crowd

behind them. We are working hard with each other. It is early days

but we have to be happy with that. What about next week's opponents,

Glasgow? We will enjoy tonight and we will look at Glasgow next week

but it will be a big one coming back home. Just checking you are all

right after the bump in the first half? Gas, I am all right. Keep the

We said it would be a cracker and it has turned out to be exactly that.

That was set up for a real humdinger and that is what proved to be. This

try on the stroke of half-time, Rey Lee-Lo be the last line of defence

to the line as well. About 11 or 12 phases in the build-up to that one.

Dave Kilcoyne eventually barging his way over the line. A bit of maths

joke from -- a bit of magic from Matthew Morgan. The Blues clinging

onto a 1-point victory. Rob, put that into context. It was a

cracking win. Winning away from home, that is a massive result for

them? If you look at the game as a whole, there was dominance by the

Blues at certain times. They started off very well, went into half-time

ahead, after the try from Tom James, and then they had to withstand a

huge amount of Munster pressure. It bounced back from being behind to

get that result, it shows the character within the Cardiff Blues

side. I think Danny Wilson has dulled a great environment with his

new recruits and getting the players to input into the way they want to

play. I think that is starting to come through. It is very early days.

Let's hear from Ellis Jenkins who took over the captaincy when Gethin

Jenkins came off the field. He is with Phil Steele now. He is

practising his goal swing and he is smiling now. How tough was that? It

is tough to perform out here and get a win out here. One of the things we

know we need to work on from last season was our away form. Today was

a big chance to show that. We did rarely well in the first half. They

came back into it as we knew they would. I think we did really well to

manage the game and slow the momentum down and get a great try.

Really chuffed to win. Talk about managing the game, tell us about

your little piece of skill, your little dig through. The boys were

going mad in the commentary room talking about it. I'm glad I finally
