Scarlets v Leinster Scrum V

The Scarlets began the season as Wales's best region, but they failed

to live up to the hype. Three games down they were floundering, no wins,

no points. That is heartbreak for the Scarlets

and they are still weeping -- waiting for their first point of the

season. But then this. Five wins in a row including a romp over the

Glasgow Warriors. Winning is a habit and Scarlets are on a roll. Smiles

all round as the Scarlets take the spoils against Glasgow. What better

way to put your winning run on the line than welcoming the league

leaders? A first start for Johnny McNicholl,

the latest kiwi import. Isa Nacewa captains the visitors and he's

alongside an exciting prospect, Adam Byrne, who scored three tries this

season for Leinster. These are undoubtedly the two form sides in

the league. Leinster have won six in a row. Scarlets have won five in a

row and victory tonight could see them climb into the top four for the

first time this season. Good evening and welcome to a pretty chilly

ground but conditions are fantastic for a game of rugby. We have a slick

partnership alongside me. Gareth and Richie. We've talked about Scarlets

winning five on the trot, two of them came when all their

international is where with Wales. What does that tell us about the

talent here? They were against Cardiff and Glasgow and they were

the best two performances of the season. The young players they've

brought in to replace the International 's, the likes of

Boyde, Davies, they are standing up and being counted and they are

pushing for a first-team spot. Johnny McNicholl, a man the crowd

are very excited about. His team-mates have been applauding him

in training, he's that good. You didn't play against him, but you

were aware of him and he's impressed you. He is well respected in super

rugby, scored a hat-trick -- hatful of tries last season and he was part

of a special back three. It will be interesting to see what he can add

to a special Scarlets back line as it stands. Talking of the Scarlets

back line and their attacking prowess, perhaps misfiled in the

early part of the season, but in the last few games it's become more

fluent. They lost the last three -- first three of the season, but

ironically they've won the last five on the bounce. Not a lot has

changed. They keep the back row in the wide channels and it creates wit

and mismatches in the wide channel. The execution has to be good and

that's exactly what has improved for the Scarlets recently. They are

getting to the wide channels and creating quick ball and getting

mismatches in the wider channels. Here's the mismatch coming up from

Steff Evans. Lovely step. He's been one of their form players and the

width is being held by Boyde. That's exactly the form they've been

playing with over the last few weeks. Powerful finish from Boyde,

one of a number of players impressing in the absence of some

key internationals. The teams in the dressing rooms but they are about to

emerge onto the pitch. Leinster led by Isa Nacewa. They have the best

records in the league. One of those records will end tonight. Which one

will it be? Lets join our commentators.

Thanks. It's the table toppers who take the field first. Strauss,

cousin of tomorrow's captain, Adriaan Strauss. Bent and McCarthy

are the other thirtysomethings. Gibson-Park at scrum-half, Ross

Byrne is 21 and just a third start alongside him. Isa Nacewa giving the

experience behind the scrum. The home youngsters providing away

supporters well. It's good to see so many local schools represented here.

It's good to see that they've got the Scarlets flags and the Leinster

flags in evidence this evening on a very cold but thankfully dry evening

in Plymouth Lee. Conditions are conducive for good, open rugby.

Ryan Elias gets his third consecutive start with Wyn Jones

alongside him. David Bulbring in the second row while Will Boyde has been

impressing with recent displays. New signing from the Crusaders Johnny

McNicholl. Jonathan Evans on a try scoring spree.

Only his second game in charge in the competition for Sean Gallagher

of Ireland. A lot on his shoulders this evening. Five in a row for the

Scarlets, six in a row for Leinster. Which one will give? First penalty

in the opening seconds goes to the Scarlets. A chance for them to move

downfield as Adam Byrne, as Ross mentioned earlier, one of the top

try scorers in the league. A little bit overeager and Patchell taking

the Scarlets to just outside the 22. A beautiful night at Park to

Scarlets at the start of a big night of Welsh rugby. Scarlets on top form

at the moment in the Pro12 and I've watched them in the LV Cup as well

so looking forward to tonight. Bulbring brings it down. A lot of

running to try and create the space and an early chance for Johnny

McNicholl. Did very well to keep it alive, but unfortunately for him it

had gone forward beforehand. If that's the shape of things to come,

we'll look forward to a great game. Early enterprise from the Scarlets.

A good pass, just a little bit narrow. The signs are good.

Johnny McNicholl's signing was done a long time ago, but waiting for the

end of the MTM cup before finally coming over to the Scarlets. Great

they want to get the ball in his hands very early.

Wyn Jones, Ryan Elias and Werner Kruger in the front row. Leinster

have the best scrummage success in the Pro12 currently. I've been

impressed with Jones and Aljaz, two Young front rowers and making a mark

here. -- Elias. Mizsei were trying to put pressure

on the Scarlets. Patchell was back there. Barry Daly a cross from the

left wing. Good tackle by Steff Hughes on

halfway. The Scarlets defence up very quickly, led by James Davies. A

Kums McNicholl. -- across Kums McNicholl. Into the arms of

Gibson-Park. A bit crowded in midfield. Not a pass Patchell was

hoping to pick. The line speed of both teams has been impressive early

on. Nicely laid back by Ryan. Good,

quick, clean ball from Leinster, getting away from the breakdown

early. The speed of the ball is really noticeable. Lovely surface,

lovely night, and the ball is coming back Freddie quickly on both sides.

Nagle trying to time his run, but well read by Boyde. Almost an

interception by Patchell. Pressure continuing. Good return ball boy Dan

Leavy, but not taken cleanly. You may not recognise many Leinster

players, but they have a fine set of players in Dublin. A lot of strength

in depth and good young players. You have to be careful on turnover ball,

especially against Leinster. It was a loose pass, but they come alive.

If that goes to hand, it's a desperate tackle for Parkes. Early

warning sides. -- signs. Is that our party should give? He was in his eye

line. Speed of both teams very important tonight.

Nothing in it as far as the two hacks go, weight wise. -- packs.

Steff Evans got the tackle in. Scarlets fancy looking for space,

good drive by Boyde. He's impressive. Outstanding young

player. There's a few of them down here. It's an area of the game the

Scarlets have to be careful. Nicely laid-back by Nacewa. Opening six

minutes, ball in hand all round. Byrne tried to get the backpass in.

Knock on, advantage plate. Dominic Ryan gets Leinster going forward

again. Both front fives are growing

already, fast game. Not knocked on by Jonathan Evans.

The ball touched in flight. Everybody onside. Adam Byrne brings

it up to the ten-metre line. So open at the moment, it's a bit

like an old school game. Johnny McNicholl! That's a dream start for

the New Zealander. It's been an open seven minutes, but mistakes followed

and the ball came out of Strauss's hands into the willing grasp of

Johnny McNicholl and it's taken him seven minutes to get his name on the

scoresheet for the Scarlets. As much as anything the players are happy to

get a rest! What a start to the game. Both teams looking to play

wide. Strauss took his eye off the ball and this fella has made the

most clean breaks in super rugby last season. He's not going to

squander this chance. What a start to his Scarlets career. He took his

eye off the ball, juggled it, tried to shift it on. I think he kept his

eye on the ball! Great start to the game. If the game continues at this

pace, and the willingness of both sides to play and keyboard in hand,

we are in for a good night. -- keep ball in hand. What an opening for

Scarlets. Not something they created, but something Johnny

McNicholl was only too eager to take. The Scarlets will pick them

off. Full of confidence at the moment. A great start, it will

settle his nerves. Playing for his new team.

Lovely weight on the restart. Perfectly done. Nagle couldn't

gather, but he did get it back. Boyde did very well on the Scarlets

side. Byrne watches the bounce. Waiting for the kicks. Kick chase

and organisation is crucial. Aaron Shingler first up following the

kick, as is so often the case. They are not giving up on style,

Leinster. Advantage here, there was a swinging arm, but the referee has

let it go. There's been some good carries by Jack Conan. And Barry

Daly on the left wing, he looks a good carrier, too.

Daly was waiting for that one. Had to take it on the half volley. Great

control from the winger Andy Gray Pastor Daniel Levy. -- and a great

pass to Dan Leavy. Not a great couple of minutes. So. The try line

was beckoning. Lovely off-load and interplay. Dan Leavy recently

selected for his first cap for Ireland. Look at this off-load off

the floor. Nacewa is a class act. I mentioned the swinging arm earlier.

A cheeky little dig by Hadleigh Parkes. It's an elbow! Lucky for

Gibson-Park that he didn't make more contact. It may well interest the

citing officer. This is bad news for the Scarlets because Rhys Patchell

is leaving. The TMO has brought it to the attention of Sean Gallagher.

Blue nine. Not sure there's much contact, but the intent is

definitely there. He's clipped him on the chin. I'll tell you what I'm

seeing. Blue nine has swung his arm into the red player. He hasn't made

any contact, but it's still a penalty. Do you agree? At the

moment, Sean Gallagher is only thinking penalty. If it is a

penalty, it will be a double whammy. Let's have another look. Hadleigh

Parkes driving through, let's go. He's not allowed to do that. That's

at least a penalty. Letting him go, going to retreat... Have you heard

what I've said? I've heard you and I was asking you to look at the angle

from Ed on and bring it up again for me. -- head on.

Just checking the contact, as requested. I'm going to stick with

my original decision. Penalty only. The crowd went agree, but it will be

just a penalty. -- the crowd went agree. A let off for Richardt

Strauss, because even if he had got over the line, we would have gone

back to the TMO, but it relevant. While all that happened, can you

bring us any news or Rhys Patchell? Dan Jones is going to be on. Bad

news the Rhys Patchell, but I'm looking forward to seeing Dan Jones.

I saw him against Bath in the Anglo Welsh cup a couple of weeks ago and

he controlled the game superbly well. This is his chance, it often

happens for young players like theirs. Former Wales under 20

outside-half. Tom Price couldn't get to the

line-out throw. There they go, from the breakdown,

led by Jack Conan. Nice pass to Ryan Elias. Good

off-load from him as well. A fine cover tackle from Mike McCarthy.

Just a bit slow coming around the corner. You can't afford that

against these guys. Lovely little into play in midfield, just needed

somebody on his shoulder. A bit slow coming around the corner from the

previous phase. Jonathan Evans had to go the other way, looking for

support. A relieving scrum down here, disappointing. Hopefully we

have you -- news on Rhys Patchell. We understand it's a head injury

assessment. Just been talking to Mark Taylor, the team manager, and

he tells me he is optimistic he will be coming back onto the pitch, but

we'll wait and see. Thanks. There's a certain time limit he has to

undergo a series of tests. Very simple questions, what's your name?

What was the score last night? If he passes them in a certain time, he'll

be back. There is one of the new laws, a long

arm transfer. Mick McCarthy has to keep the ball within the proximity

of his body. He extends his arm and that's not allowed under the new

rulings. That's better from Tom Price.

Nacewa has to carry over. Did he? He's not sure. He's checking. My

first thought was he did carry it over. What a beautiful kick.

Checking for the grounding. Nacewa couldn't do anything else than take

it over. Beautifully weighted kick, difficult bounce of the ball. I

don't have a very good view of the goal-line. Scooted from the in play

side of the whitewash. The players legs are in goal as the

ball is moving and he brings it back and grounds it so it's a 22 drop

out. Technical decision. Good decision. His legs were over, but

his arm wasn't. It's a good call. I don't know if you can give Nacewa

credit, but if it was intentional, a brilliant touch of skill.

Jones called for it amongst all the big forwards. Hadleigh Parkes steps

in at ten. Jonathan Edwards probing the

blindside, but across comes Nagle. Good defence by Leinster. Clever

defence. It's not just a collapsed maul, look how they get their bodies

the other side of the ball. Very difficult for a Scarlets player to

present the ball and it's a turnover. Rhys Patchell

successfully, it looks like, has completed the head injury

assessment. Good to see, a head injury

assessment coming back onto the field. Relaying the call of the last

line just to let him know. Watch out for Jack Conan coming down the

channel. Great work by James Davies. He will

get in there. He's so selective of these, and very, very good.

Exceptionally strong on the ball and low. That's invaluable to having

your squad. An openside who can get over the ball, but be clever and

picks the right ones as well. If it's cold here, I bet it's a few

degrees colder in Galway. Blue is trailing 7-5 at the moment. The game

in Belfast was called off because of a frozen pitch. When they put the

wind machine on in Galway, it gets worse. Second-half, normally. Price

the target again at the front. A good drive on by the Scarlets/ the

-- Scarlets forwards. Again, very well defended. Technical, very

technical. The referee is spot on. He's blowing the whistle quite

sharply tonight, but he's spot on. Irish sides are clever. Good set up,

where the Scarlets players are coming onto the ball. When they were

trying to get to ground, incomes Dan Leavy. Impressed with him, he's one

to watch. He will win many more caps for Ireland. Tom James got the Blues

try in Galway. Blues were seventh going into this game, one place

behind the Scarlets. Conduct, champions last year, down in tenth.

-- Connacht. Scarlets have had two line-outs in the 22 in the first 18

minutes and neither have been executed so Leinster have been able

to clear their lines. You need to execute, it's a key statistics. How

they can transfer possession into points.

All transferred back very quickly to the back row again. Clean break by

Reid. Using him as first receiver. Steff Evans. David Bulbring. The

Leicester defender did not get away quickly enough. Dan Leavy. His

mitigation will be could not get away.

So far so good from the referee. No way Aaron Shingler could present as

he wanted to. It is six of one and half a dozen of another there. Very

clever. Five penalties converted -- conceded by Leinster in the opening

quarter. He will want to get this just about on the 22 and it changes

the line-out call. Can they make this one card? It is

their third line-out in the 22 this half.

Will Boyde is a good carrier. Aaron Shingler gets them over the gain

line. Rhys Patchell. Aled Thomas as a man and ball. Johnny McNicholl

goes the long way round. Wyn Jones. The referee eventually decides there

is no advantage. After the warning I wonder if it will be a card as well.

He made it clear when he spoke to Isa Nacewa and it should be a yellow

card. Ref mac I have just spoken to the captain about not rolling away.

He is true to his word. It might not be the same offence but repeat

offending has the same result. The accumulation of all those penalties.

It was the third line-out in the 22. They apply the Scarlets are going

for the try. They have good set up in the more. You can't pull this

down and McCarthy in full vision of the referee visit. Can they make it

count? The Scarlets have been daddy Leicester territory a few times but

have come away empty-handed. Can they make use of the extra man up

front? Werner Kruger is over. The Scarlets are celebrating and this

time they make it count. To justification. On the yellow card

should cost you and it has. And the decision by Hadleigh Parkes to go to

the corner and they executed it. The fall is rewarded the captain for the

decision. The forwards coach has got them going and it's nothing short of

what the Scarlets deserve. Good execution. David Bulbring in a

keeper 's vision. The leg power and height takes them over. They are

played to the Scarlets. Some young players in there but a good

collective decision. Rhys Patchell with an excellent

conversion from wide out. That has doubled the score. I think the

Scarlets will be quite pleased. Catrin Heledd is with Mark Taylor.

That is how you make the most of an extra man. We put them under

pressure with the driving line-out and again a good call to go for the

corner and we got the reward. A very tough Leinster team and delighted

with the start with that. Johnny McNicholl has been impressive in

training. What a Scarlets debut. He has come over and he finished that

off with one of his first edges. That is the reason we want people

like him here. They didn't manage to clear from the

restart. They will need to from here. Aaron Shingler the safe

recipient. Jonathan Evans who has scored a try in each of the last

three games. It was a safe defensive kick but it could have turned out

better. It's a lovely kick. The strategy is either to kick long and

get a good chase or kick a contestable kick. They chose the

latter and Steff Evans should have backed himself to take that. It's a

good Catt tactic. A good kick under pressure. It is a

contestable height and distance. Adam Byrne was lying deep waiting

for the long kick. Dominic Ryan has moved up to Parton -- partner Ian

Nagle in the second row. It's crucial they don't give any points

away while Mike McCarthy is. Just consolidate that lead. They are

running at the ten channel. Aled Thomas and Johnny McNicholl with the

tackle. It's Leinster 's ball. Richardt Strauss. Peter Dooley. Back

on the angle comes Noel Reid. Not bearing his weight on the floor. His

entry was legal into the tackle area but he went off his feet. The

referee has been spot on in this area of the game. I think they will

take the three points year. One man down. Will Boyde is disappointed

with himself. He's had a great start to the game. This is the tackle. He

comes through the entry but he doesn't support his own body weight.

Reaching passed the ball, it's too clear for the referee. It just looks

wrong more than anything. But he's trying things and his all action.

It's good to see. Isa Nacewa reaches the 50 point mark in the league for

the season and gets Leinster's first of the evening. You always worry as

a coach about how vulnerable your team is after scoring and that is

three cheap points particularly with the yellow card for Leinster.

Leinster are down to 14 men for the next four minutes. And con advantage

being played. Jack Conan disappointed after the initial good

work. A great state. Jonathan Evans ripping the ball from the number

eight. He has done well since coming back to Wales from Bath. He has

taken a few opportunities off the bench and pushed himself up the

pecking order behind Gareth Davies at the Scarlets.

The games between these two have been one by the home side on the

last five occasions. Jonathan Evans to Aled Thomas. David

Bulbring. Another penalty. Rhys Patchell. Floated out by Hadleigh

Parkes to James Davies. Still advantage being played. The Leinster

defence came up to quickly in midfield. We're starting to see the

shape Richie Rees talked about. Ryan Elias was out there. James Davies

again in the wide channel. Will Boyde in this near channel. They are

getting into that shape. They are going for it again. It's great to

see. It shows a lot of courage. Going for the throat. A couple of

forwards of Rhys Patchell at ten. He gets back into position. James

Davies waiting in that far 15 metre channel. And tidy but James Davies

does gather. Wyn Jones. Ryan Elias. The Scarlets have a minute to take

advantage of the extra man. Hadleigh Parkes comes on strong angle.

Jonathan Evans. Rhys Patchell. Well read by Isa Nacewa. The pass was too

long and it gave Isa Nacewa a chance. The Scarlets still have

possession but up backpedalling. They are a bit narrow now. Steff

Hughes does give them a bit of it. Hadleigh Parkes tries to go through

again. Great pass by Rhys Patchell. Ryan Elias. Up into double phases --

double figures for phases. Aaron Shingler. Jonathan Evans. Rhys

Patchell has a go himself. Again, tantalisingly close. They need quick

ball. Great defence keeps out Jonathan Evans. Aaron Shingler has a

luck. Johnny McNicholl is a screaming on the touchline. They

keep it tight. Wyn Jones has a go. There is a chance on the left-hand

side. Steff Evans tries to sneak through and he has them. The

Scarlets are rewarded for their enterprise in keeping the ball alive

as Steff Evans gets try number three. And rewarded in the boldness

going for the corner. They built the phases, pressured the Leinster line

and got there in the end. Steff Evans does really well. He still has

a bit to do and it's a great score from the Scarlets. I have been

impressed by this young man this season. He knows where the line is.

The Scarlets go for the throat and capitalise on the yellow card of

Mike McCarthy. A good finish by Steff Evans. His fourth of the

season. The Scarlets have been criticised for getting three tries

but not getting the bonus point but they have one hole have to get one

more try. If you have your foot on the throat of a side like Leinster

you have to go for it you can let them get back into the game. Rhys

Patchell slots are crucial to points. If you have a chance to put

the Moray, put them away. Three from 34 Rhys Patchell. What an

encouraging first half from the Scarlets. Despite Isa Nacewa's

penalty Leinster were made to pay for losing a man to the sin-bin.

They got out of jail there. Wayne Pivac and his coaching team would

have been on eBay because you are vulnerable straight after scoring

and you want your team to Exeter and get out of the danger zone. They

will have another -- another opportunity to do that.

Not for the first time the scrum goes down on the near side. Werner

Kruger is propping against Peter Dooley. We are nearly at 25 minutes

before half-time. Leinster will be dangerous as they chase the game but

a fantastic half for the seat Daleks. Technically sound and some

good young players getting in the wider channels.

Jonathan Evans comes away for it. Over the halfway. He has a Steff

Evans in support. As he looked at the defence coming across the

concentration went and so did the try scoring opportunity. We were

praising him for his close finish. Jonathan Evans showed a clean pair

of heels. It was on his right shoulder attached but Jonathan Evans

did absolutely everything. He drew Isa Nacewa in and fed his winger but

that is a bonus point try gone. I hope they don't live to regret that.

It is Dutch -- attach flat on him but he's got the gas and he should

have taken it. The Scarlets fans with their heads in their hands.

They've got to five pointers so far this season.

Ross Byrne to Isa Nacewa. Time for Aled Thomas. He knew the fullback

was following his own kick. The outside-half had gone back there.

That is in the hands of Johnny McNicholl. Rhys Patchell. That was

dangerous. Leinster shooting out of the line and putting the parser

under pressure. Good play again from the Scarlets. See how we spotted out

of the back and backs himself. He hits Hadleigh Parkes man and ball.

If somebody comes out of the line like that Rhys Patchell should go at

him and make that decision to come out of the line a vulnerable one.

Jamison Gibson-Park to Rory O'Loughlin. Just a couple of minutes

for the Scarlets not to concede at the end of the first half. Keep your

line discipline, don't go for lost causes. Support from Noel Reid.

Richardt Strauss out to Adam Byrne. Back inside and as we were talking

about not conceding that exactly what the Scarlets to and that is a

lifeline for Leinster. Will the Scarlets reject that dropped pass by

Steff Evans? You have to credit the hooker for the support. Fast play

again and Noel Reid is a dangerous player. A very clever pass. They do

looked dangerous in those wide channels. Dominic Ryan's burst to

start it all. The presence of mind to offload knowing Noel Reid was in

support. Richardt Strauss likes it out in the wide area and he makes up

to his early -- for his earlier dropped pass. Game on. The Pretoria

born hooker has 17 caps for Ireland. Isa Nacewa tries to add the extra

two points but it cuts across the face. That could prove costly. It's

a great night for the kickers. Great off-load on the presence of mind to

float the pass over. Lovely step inside Steff Evans and a quality

score from the league leaders. It could be the final play of the

first half. They have shown no great sense to go to the touchline

Leinster. Good step by Aled Davies. Aaron Shingler. The clock goes red.

Jonathan Evans just checking and Rhys Patchell puts the ball dead. A

pretty satisfactory first half for the Scarlets but it could have been

even better. They could have the bonus point in the bank and a clean

sheet but instead it's three tries to one. The Scarlets lead 21-8.

Hadleigh Parkes is with Catrin Heledd. You had the extra man on the

pitch and you made them pay. The forwards wanted to go for the

line-out and we got our reward for that. It's a shame we let them in

with a couple of minutes to go but it's been pleasing. And very close

to securing the bonus point. Sometimes it just doesn't come off.

Hopefully we can come out in the second half and put on a show for

the fans. What a game it's been sold. It's pretty much been all

Scarlets. What a dream start for Johnny McNicholl on his debut. Mike

McCarthy was shown a yellow card not long after and the Scarlets took

advantage. At the confidence to go for the line-out and that was the

end result. Werner Kruger at the bottom of the pile of bodies. Then

patients for their third. Steff Evans crossed the line after another

of phases. The Scarlets with three quarters of the way towards a bonus

point and they still have a healthy lead at half-time but it's not as

big as it could have been because in the dying moments of that first-half

Richardt Strauss crossed for Leinster's first try of the game.

Interesting to look at the stats because they are very even. The

Scarlets have made their most out of their opportunities they've had.

Territory and possession virtually even. Penalties conceded, seven

conceded by Leinster and to buy the Scarlets. The Scarlets staying on

the right side of the referee. A fascinating opening half for the

Scarlets. What a half of rugby and they could have secured the bonus

point by half-time. It's largely down to the pressure the Scarlets

are exerting on Leicester. They can't get out of their half. The

Scarlets can't have too many complaints. The key players are

playing well and that's all you can ask. These two teams are the form

teams in the league. But you'd think the Scarlets worthy table toppers on

the evidence of that display so far. They have blown them away. The

Johnny McNicholl try was a good starter him. You can see the energy,

it's a young squad and well captained by Hadleigh Parkes. They

are playing for each other and it's a fantastic team. Johnny McNicholl

has looked hungry for work and what a start to his Scarlets career. He

will be really pleased. He is a big-name signing. You always want to

get off the mark as a winger. It's your first job to score tries. There

was a bit of luck but he gets on the ball and there was only one winner

after that. The wingers are predators. The spot opportunities

and make the most of them. Steff Evans has been fantastic so far but

there was a chance and Johnny McNicholl to get. It's difficult for

Steph on the other side but it's those small things that sometimes

separate the top class players. One try each for the winners. The wide

game is going well. We spoke before about the Scarlets pack not having a

really hard edge but they are picking a game plan to suit the

players they've got and in that back row they've got to sevens in Will

Boyde and James Davies and they are playing a game plan which suits

those players. Both of those players have been a nuisance at the

breakdown. They are working in tandem and getting over the ball.

James Davies year is a superb openside. He joined that defensive

line and made the tackle and is back on his feet. He's over the top of

the ball and it's a penalty. Again, just the workrate of both of them in

defence and attack has given the Scarlets the go forward and put

Leinster under pressure. They are struggling to deal with it at the

moment. Wales did not think on their feet against Japan. They are

intelligent players thinking on their feet and making those

decisions. Definitely. They lack the experience of international players

but the way they are playing, in attack they are splitting on either

side off the field but in defence they are hunting in packs. They have

been impressive tonight. Johnny McNicholl got over the try line and

the other winner Steff Evans scored as well. It was the patients which

impressed everybody about that try. They went through the phases and

Steff Evans eventually saw the gap and scored. It's about having

composure in the final third off the field. Steff Evans has scored a few

tries this season. He is looking for the ball. They built through the

phases. The ball could have gone to phases earlier. Steff Evans stops

back out. He is running at spaces rather than bodies and by doing that

he's always going to get that extra two or three metres over the gain

line. You have been looking at Johnny McNicholl throughout that

first-half and you have spotted some of the off the ball stuff. He is

keeping about Leinster defence honest with his field position. Yes,

Smart work of the ball. Whether the narrow angle for the driving

line-out and the pick and go try a year is holding his lips. He is on

the touchline. That means the Leicester defence have to spread. It

means they can't put as much pressure on the ball when the

Scarlets are picking and going. Johnny McNicholl is making a good

first impression. It's all to do in the second half. A couple of other

games going on tonight in the Pro12. The Blues are playing Connacht.

Connacht went ahead in that one but then this from Tom James,

intercepting that when to put the Blues back on level terms and its

7-7. Glasgow against the Ospreys was scoreless for most of the first half

but Tom Habberfield has put the Ospreys into a 5-0 lead over

Glasgow. Catrin Heledd is on the touchline. I am actually in the

stands because when I was in school I used to go on trips to museums but

I did go to the rugby. But we have school year from Dublin. You are the

games master of Saint Mary's College Dublin. We have been doing this

fixture for the last 38 years. We've had Jonny Sexton, Jack

McGrath, a lot of guys that have gone on and played for Ireland and

Lions. A very interesting a school trip. Who is going to win? If we can

get a bit more possession, Leinster. Did he set Scotland? I don't think

they are playing! Well done, braving those schoolkids, who are clearly

very excited. There's another game tomorrow, and it's a big one. The

last of the autumn internationals and a chance for Wales to redeem

themselves. There will be no quarter given at the principality stadium as

two wounded beasts look to salvage pride. Wales against South Africa on

BBC Two at 5pm. And a double bill on Sunday. Dragons against Ospreys. --

Dragons against Edinburgh. It is a big day for Wales tomorrow.

Let's remind ourselves of the team Rob Harley has picked. Pretty much

the team that beat Argentina. Dan Lydiate is at six, replacing Sam

Warburton. He suffered a stinger in training on Tuesday. The backs are

the same as the ones that beat Argentina. Liam Williams and Leigh

Halfpenny have swapped. Scott Williams and Jonathan Davies, the

Scarlets pair, in the centre. We've talked about the back row, no Sam

Warburton, but Justin Tipuric is on the openside flanker Matt Moriarty

retains his place at eight with Follett out on the bench. Would you

have played Fala towel? I think it's the right decision. It rewards

Moriarty for his good form so far. I think it's a good decision all

round. After Sam Davies's heroics to win the game against Japan, there

were many calling for his inclusion in the starting line-up against

South Africa. Would that have been a bit reactionary? Is Dan Biggar still

the man? They are the two best tens in Wales at the moment. Dan, with

his experience, and his control... We saw what Sam could do off the

bench and hopefully he gets a bit longer tomorrow afternoon. We can

see the Ospreys try. I mentioned Tom Habberfield got over the line. Never

in easy place to go and win so they will be delighted being 5-0 up at

half-time. Tom Habberfield showing pace to get over the line. One more

question before we talk about this game. I want to talk about South

Africa tomorrow. We saw the Wales team. South Africa have picked a

very inexperienced team. Seven caps in the three quarters line. It's

Thomas Likert C has thrown caution to the wind. Does that put more

pressure on Wales? If they were marginal favourites before South

Africa announced the team, they are massive favourites now. You would

hope so and hopefully we come away with a good win. It shows that South

Africa are really unhappy and that's more down to the pressure that's

come on from the public and media in South Africa. It's almost a case of

the coach doing something. Making a change and reacting to that loss

because they will have been wounded after the loss to Italy. The teams

are coming back out so I will ask you briefly to a prediction on South

Africa against Wales. I would go with Wales by 12. Wales by ten. Very

positive. Let's get back to this game. Rhys Patchell is about to kick

off. Scarlets one try away from achieving a bonus point. Leinster

have it all to do. No changes during the interval.

Leinster will look to build on that late recovery. Scarlets will have to

put behind them the one missed chance for a bonus point and get

down there and create another. Superb take by Thomas. Would have

been. This is one for the referee and TMO to sort out between them.

What it a fair challenge in the air or water it not? Clearly going to

TMO. They have a clear protocol now. Go back. No doubt Thomas called the

ball. I want to check the contact between 11 blue and 15 red. Was it a

rash challenge? Eyes on the ball, textbook. That's a yellow card and

it could be worse. He's landed on his head. It could be a red card

here. We could see red. These are the best two angles. Keeping his eye

on the ball, he's gone up. I think they have clear directives now

regarding this. He's looking at the man. He's tackled him in the air.

That's a red for me because he comes down on his head. What I've seen is

11 blue has tackled the player in the air. I just want you to confirm

that if I took the hand out of the equation, his head would have made

contact with the ground first. I think his head makes contact with

the ground anyway. It's a real shame, he's had a good game so far.

Young player. Too rash. I'm going to give a red card to number 11 blue

and a penalty. Player safety is paramount. Poor Aled Thomas came

down in a heap and that could have been really, really nasty. Very

unfortunate and he knows it. He landed on his head so it's a red

card. He wasn't expecting that. He was expecting yellow, not red. A

real shame for the young man, he's had a good game, he's carried well,

he's looked lively. It's a rash decision and challenge. He will

learn from that, he won't do it again. It puts the Scarlets in the

box position now to ram this time. They won't have a better chance.

Disappointment for Barry Daly, but the correct decision from Sean

Gallagher. Can the Scarlets make it count? They have time on their

hands. They have superior numbers. They should surely make it count

from here. They looked good enough in the first 40. They can't rest on

their laurels, they have to be ruthless. A lot of rugby to play.

You know how I feel as a coach about the conversion. It doesn't seem like

much, but it's the next Denayer Lynda Coffin of Leinster. What have

they got now? -- it's an extra nail in the Coffin of Leinster.

Well, Leinster have brought Zane Kirchner on for Dominic Ryan. Having

lost a winger, they are now bringing on a back three player as well. A

change at scrum-half and hooker as well for the visitors.

It's not going right for Leinster now, even the bounce of the ball.

Leinster try and weave their patterns and get back into this one.

Bulbring has come good in the last few weeks. He's been prominent for

the Scarlets. Looking to get the ball away,

having to drive over and it was very untidy ball. : doing the salvage

job. -- Conan. In from the side. The moment you come in from the

side, the referee... I've been impressed with the referee tonight.

Good control and made clear decisions. Scarlets ready to make

changes. John Fogarty, it could be a long half-hour for your 14 men.

Scarlets put us under a lot of pressure in the first half. We

turned the ball over for five times on the ground and conceded seven

penalties due to the pressure they put on us. We've made it difficult

for ourselves. What about the way the Scarlets have taken their

opportunities? We knew they would get out the blocks and scored tries

and they've done that well. We just have to battle on now. Any chance of

getting back into this one? We need to defend this first and get in good

positions. If we do that, we can score tries. Thank you. A lot of

replacement in the first game, but he's started every game since. He

was top of the turnovers at one point and his scrummaging is very,

very good. In the interests of being a boring coach, the scoreboard is 20

points. A man advantage. Do you take three and kill off the game or do

you go with the philosophy they have had all game and go for the corner

and really kill them? There's another warning for Nacewa. You

could lose another man. Go to the corner, another penalty... I'd be

inclined for the latter, personally. Head injury assessment. Substitute

Timmins, first of the season for him. For the corner. This is the

difference in the Scarlets side this year, playing with confidence.

You have to congratulate the performance to date. Good composure,

fantastic. Driving them forward. All about patience, height and

technique. And some help from Aaron Shingler, who's had a good game

tonight. There's Elias, he typifies the young talent down here at the

moment. Hungry to play for the first team, to get onto the starting

sheet. When I was learning my times tables,

five sevens were 35 and that's exactly what the Scarlets.. It's a

good balance at the moment. I'd really like to see them be ruthless

now, but still a long way to go. A chance to give the squad run out

Scarlets are giving Leinster no time to settle. A very impressive

Scarlets performance, as good as we've seen this season. Fantastic,

but can they compete it? Keep their discipline, and add to the

performance. Tom Daly has just come on for Rory

O'Loughlin. Both teams, for different reasons, using the bench.

Scarlets giving everybody a chance. Leinster looking for something

different to see if they can change the situation. Tadgh Beirne has just

come on the field and given a penalty away. His first

interventions. Tadgh Beirne has joined from Leinster. He will be

looking to make a point having been released. He tried to come he just

made the wrong point! Aled Thomas has had a knock 4-2 this

evening. He makes way for Gareth Owen. Not bad replacements, either.

Showing their depth. Gareth Owen, call it a player. I had him the

Ospreys. Aled Davies, recently in the Welsh squad. First time in four

games he hasn't got a try, but he certainly contributed and supplied

the players around him. Good work from Leinster, led by James Tracy.

next in line. Lovely ball in. Easy road through four Adam Byrne. The

fifth of the season. That was too easy from a Scarlets point of view.

Yes. You can't switch off. They are top of the league for a reason. 14

men or not, they will create and keep coming. 25 minutes of rugby to

play. These teams can score four tries and get close to you and they

will be hunting for anything. A slip off tackle. Leinster love the inside

ball, decoy runners. Lovely little block play and in he comes off the

right-wing. Adam Byrne, who has shown good flashes tonight.

Conversion from Nacewa. It will be a boost for Leinster after suffering

so much in the opening 55 minutes. A good, positive restart, get

themselves back into the game, keep the intensity high and make the

extra man count towards the last ten minutes. Leinster will still be

chasing two tries to get a bonus point, whatever the result.

Absolutely. Come away with a point from this.

Did the sensible thing, didn't force it. The line speed was there again

from Leinster. A good drive on. Patchell to

Hadleigh Parkes. Putting the ball behind the defensive lineman up.

Ross Byrne. Took his eye off the ball. Now

Leinster can sniff a chance. Amazing, you score that extra try,

make some replacements and it changes the mood and the shape of

the game. Luke McGrath with a quick tap and go, but not from the right

place. I think we know where this 1's going. They are going to chase

four tries. They need to keep those

concentration levels up, they can't think this is done and dusted.

Scarlets scored their 35th point quite early in the half. It's

tempting to get fresh players on and give them some game time, but don't

underestimate this team. They are a champion province and they've won

this Pro12, they've won European cups, depth in their squad.

McNicholl has had an impressive debut. After the red card, I'm not

sure any Leinster players were going to touch in. He's scored a try, he's

Scarlets have to be careful now, they could lose a man because they

are conceding penalties at a rate. A little grubber kick through...

complexion completely. Leinster are back in this. Complacency, that's

all I can say. Complacency. Not just on the field, off the field. Making

replacements, changing the picture of the game. Leinster aren't going

weighted. Can these replacements make their

mark for the Scarlets? Leinster are fighting the two points because if

they get back within seven, even if they lose, they will come only with

two. If you are six points adrift with ten minutes on the clock they

team. They needed to relieve the pressure. Dan Jones putting the ball

me now. This game seemed done and dusted but the Scarlets under

pressure. We have done well but we need to calm it down a bit and keep

the ball and close the game out. The most of the game it has been pretty

pleasing. What is Wayne Pivac thinking right now? Here's a chilled

out blog. He is probably hoping we can calm it down a bit and get the

ball and close the game out. You are injured. When can we expect you

on his way back that he had no support. The play to the referee, he

has been on the spot all night. After being under the cosh for a

long time the Scarlets are back downfield. He is sensing the

crossfield kick and he executes that very well. Great follow up by Steff

Evans and Gareth Owen and Hadleigh Parkes. Anything that is has it

tucked away. Aaron Shingler. Aled Davies. Will Boyde. Nothing fancy

from the Scarlets. They can't afford to give away possession.

James Davies. Johnny McNicholl. He made sure he didn't run into Aled

Davies. But presence of mind. Keep building the phases. Hadleigh Parkes

gets in behind the defence. Noel Reid was just hanging on. The

Scarlets will settle for a scrum in the end. You can feel everybody

around the end of their nervous year. Everyone in the stands is on

the edge, the players, the coaching staff, even you and me. Hadleigh

Parkes made the right decision not to kick. Nobody on his shoulder.

Just a knock-on in the tackle. Still 11 minutes ago. That is an

eternity in rugby. A messy scrum. The Scarlets won't

mind time being eaten away. Neil Hennessy was a loosehead. He

played for Ponder previewed. The television match official. --

Pontypridd. I can't see what happens there. It's

possibly against Dan Evans number 17 for the Scarlets. Down goes the

scrum. He just drives on. Nothing in it really I don't think.

Impressive refereeing. It's a big game at the top of the Pro12. He has

controlled himself very well. It's not like me to complement Irish

referee 's! Praise where it is too and he deserves it.

Rock-solid this time. Hadleigh Parkes on the charge. James Davies

latching on. Aled Davies to Werner Kruger. Into the final ten minutes.

Surely the Scarlets will go for points now. They will go for a try

first. Dan Jones fires it out. Johnny McNicholl gets man and ball.

They will go for three. We praised them going for the Cordoba this is a

different ball game. This could close the game out. Ashley Beck has

got a try for the Ospreys. 22-0. A bonus point try. That is an

impressive win for the Ospreys. Glasgow down to 14. It's a difficult

place to go. Back on track for the Ospreys and they are staying on

track. It could take the Ospreys back to the top of the table for the

time being. The Scarlets will move into the top four.

Safely done by Dan Jones. A little but of breathing space for the

Scarlets. That is a big kick in the context and it gives that breathing

space. Aaron Shingler. Leinster have plenty to play for. Still that

fourth try. Josh Macleod has done some impressive driving. They have a

lot of young back row players coming through. Saint Kirchner. 21 caps for

South Africa. They could do with him tomorrow. He's had more caps than

half the team. It is an interesting one tomorrow. It has been a very

patchy autumn series. It is a must win game for both teams. I hope it's

man of the match? It's been a great game and both sides have entertained

us. Noel Reid and Jack Conan has played well for Leinster. Wyn Jones

and Ryan Elias in the front row and Aaron Shingler and James Davies. But

for his first-half contribution and his all-round game Will Boyde is my

man of the match. He will be 22 next month. He really has caught the eye

and asked the games. Johnny McNicholl. He has popped up in all

kinds of places. A great debut. He will only grow in the Scarlets

shirt. James Davies on the ball. Tadhg Beirne has got in there as

well. James Davies. A bit of a blip in that 20 minutes after half-time

but have composed themselves. The alarm bells were ringing for a while

and another converted try then would have been 21 and as advance. The

lives were jangling but the Scarlets held their nerve and Jan Jones

penalty is the big difference. Having given themselves that

breathing space they have gone for the corner again. The Scarlets are

building nicely. Peadar Timmins had only just come on

for the second time but a head injury assessment necessary for him.

He is looking a bit wobbly. Tadhg Beirne. The Scarlets luck to get

over 40 points against the table top was. Emyr Phillips. Under pressure

from Dan Leavy and Dan Leavy has had a very good game as well. He is a

good player and has impressed meal season. He is big and aggressive

over the ball, good with the ball and he's one to watch. On a cap

against Canada. The Scarlets are in the right part off the field. The

one defeat for them all season. That came in the second game at

back. A poor pass. Are they going to go for the corner? Very

disappointing from the Scarlets. Every point counts in this Pro12.

Alone this bowl -- a losing bonus point for Leinster could buy them at

the end of the season. Give them nothing. You have secured the win,

give them nothing. As it is its one last late chance for Leinster to

come away from Parc y Scarlets with something. James Tracy puts itself

in the position. James Tracy comes away with it. In the final minute.

Leinster looking for this losing bonus point. It's been a great

effort in the second half from the 14 men of Leinster. Two quick tries

got themselves back in the game. They are looking for another one.

James Tracy again. Another penalty coming. They can afford to open it

out. The referee will take them back. It was good defence in the end

but they've got a second bite at the cherry. The clock turns red. It's

all or nothing for the Leinster forwards. Dan Leavy deserves thank

you -- something. The Scarlets trying to keep them out. The referee

can see. It's one for the television match official to decide to see of

Leinster have something or not. He thinks he's got it. The referee

thinks it is a try. Andrew Porter. The clue is in the

but does he get the ball to ground. The question is is there any reason

why I can't award the try. It doesn't look as if it's made it to
