Scarlets v Ospreys Scrum V

Some rivalries need no hype. This is one of them. The Scarlets safely

through to the play-offs but will be no less hungry for a win. The

Ospreys will be desperate to bloody the noses of their fiercest rivals.

Fasten your seat belts. This is super Saturday. These sites are

provided seven Lions to the summer tour party. Six of them are ready to

war today. Part of a potent Scarlets three quarters line. Rhys Webb and

Dan Biggar will hope to bring their experience to bear at half-backs.

Justin Tipuric will relish his battle with the inexperienced but

talented Josh Macleod. This is the West Wales derby, the Ospreys won

the Christmas fixture narrowly, but Scarlets are the form team in Wales

having won 16 in their last 18 games. And here is the Pro12 table.

Ulster can still qualify mathematically but it would take a

minor miracle for them to do so. Leinster, Munsterlander Scarlets

already through to the semifinals. Ospreys require a single point from

the match today to join them. We will know exactly how they will line

up in a few hours' time. Good evening. Welcome to scrum 5 live

from any capacity Parc y Scarlets. Almost 15,000 passionate fans

expected this evening for what is sure to be a firecracker of a West

Wales derby. You can guarantee a good deal will be Ospreys as well.

And we have three panellists here today. All 100% impartial! Jonathan

Davies, Martyn Williams, former Ospreys coach. Jonathan first we

talk about this time of the season and this game is not as

nerve-racking as it might have been but winning is essential. What does

that tell us about the health of Welsh regional rugby when the sides

are both guaranteed virtually to be in the semis? It is a great

occasion, a nearly full house, both sides going into the semifinals on

winning form. Not quite as intense but you want to keep the momentum

going, keep playing well going into the semifinals. By the odds are

stacked against both regions. But on the form of the last couple of

games, who knows. It is brilliant to have these two Welsh sides in the

semifinal. We only had one in the top six last year. So a healthy

state for us. And hopefully to home semifinal as next year. Indeed but

on today, the Scarlets must be favourites. Playing at home. The

Ospreys coming into this on quite a poor run of form by their standards.

And the Scarlets attack razor-sharp. The backstabbing going really well,

scoring lots of tries and in different ways as well. They had a

clever tactic, going down the short side. Look at these boys reloading,

key players and the banks in particular, trying to exploit

weaknesses down the short side. Steff Evans has been important this

year. Scott Williams, Jonathan Davies, on that short side, looking

for numbers on the short side. Jonathan Evans will be good coming

off the bench today. Then threatening runners like Jonathan

Davies. Fantastic. And for Liam Williams you will see him on the

short side with Johnny McNicholl. They know what they're doing. The

interplay between them. It shows exactly where they are at the

moment. And the Ospreys need to be aware of that. If anyone can capture

the Scarlets attack it is the Ospreys. Number seven the most

important player in the game as ever. The Scarlets average more

turnovers than any other team in the league but they are without James

Davies today. Yes, he tops the stats when it comes to turnovers. But

young Josh Macleod came in last week at the last minute, and he was

outstanding. They expected big things from him at the start of the

year, he is a fantastic athlete. Number eight is maybe his preferred

position. He got some great turnovers and defensively solid as

well. Similar in stature and style of play. Every week is just

incredible. The complete rugby player. Ball in hand. Really

interesting matchup in the back rows for both teams. Three very mobile,

very quick flanker is who will make it difficult for teams to attack.

The mind is just around the corner so appointed through. So a fantastic

matchup between the back rows. A critical area again is midfield. We

all know about Josh Matavesi. Hadleigh Parkes as well is

influential. We had Kieron Fonotia last week and he has beaten more

players in the Pro12. Very creative and dangerous on the ball. But the

midfielders, they need to be wary of Jonathan Davies and Scott Williams,

their impact. Just attach lazy, Kieron Fonotia and Josh Marta Vaizey

and they cannot afford to be. And the fly-half, the incumbent Welsh

fly-half and future line and a guy who has really impressed since

moving to this part of the world, Rhys Patchell. We mentioned seven

and ten and historically the Ospreys have bullied the Scarlets front

five. We will see what happens today. We look back on the seventh

and tenth whatever happens. I think Rhys Patchell is up and coming, he

tries a lot of things. He has good pace and power. His composure and

game management is not yet at that level. He's got to eradicate his

mistakes. Not try to ride but let it happen. Dan Biggar is the ultimate

professional. He communicates, he will organise. Kick when the time is

right to kick. He will not put anyone under pressure. He has played

flatter this year. So he has been there and done it and the other is

trying to knock him off his perch as always happens in the Number Ten

slot. Fascinating duels all over the pitch to look forward to. Jonathan

is on its way to the commentary box. The Ospreys, it is going to be

close, you can guarantee that. Let's join our match commentators.

This is how the Ospreys line-up this afternoon. Plenty at stake for them

of course. 15 players out. A new Ospreys appearance record at

full-back, Dan Evans. Here come the Scarlets, looking to cement their

place as the top Welsh region in the Pro12 this season. One last chance

for them to force their way into the Wales squad. These players. It has

been an excellent year so far but the Scarlets. A near capacity crowd

as well giving them a huge ovation as they and their captain Ken Owens

make their way onto the field. This is how the Scarlets line-up.

Josh Macleod ups the stakes in the battle in the number seven jersey.

Steff Evans is the top scorer in the league. Up against Keelan Giles of

the Ospreys. It is an amazing fight. A lovely

day, a full house. Both sides in the semifinal already but looking just

to maintain that momentum and form before the big challenges next week.

The Scarlets have won nine of ten Pro12 matches this year. The Ospreys

still need that point to be sure of a place in the play-offs. That would

get two Welsh teams through for the first time. Trips to Leinster and

Munster await in the play-off semifinals. 80 minutes to settle

here in West Wales first. If this is the sub to the hype it

should be a cracker. -- the hype. An easy gather for the Scarlets in

the end. Nigel Owens making his presence felt

already. He warned them. Another chance for the Ospreys early on.

A bit of blogging on the side. Perfect start for the Ospreys. They

will take the time to step up. Take the sting out of the whole

atmosphere, the home atmosphere. Scarlets had been talking about a

They know they're not the biggest or most powerful of teams. They need

the ball on the park. Rob Evans fantastically quick hands to put Ken

Owens away. They have thrown everything at the Ospreys, brilliant

tackles. Scarlets again. Turnover ball. Great tackle from Dan Biggar.

Scarlets. Pressurising the line. Desperate defence from the Ospreys.

Davies probing. No way through yet. A big hit on McLeod from Sam

Underhill again. Good drive from Samson Lee. Rhys Patchell a bit

Patchell does well to try to shield Jonathan Davies but it is not going

to happen. Jonathan Davies looks hurt as well, not like him to go

down injured. Look at that, great hands. Owens has got to go higher.

That is the thing. He is a bit heavy! He goes Horie, takes up the

line and the flag. That is what the wingers do these days. But brilliant

start to the game, that pace and intensity. Make such a difference to

the atmosphere. You have got a full house. It tends to generate them

onto the field as well. Justin Tipuric having attention as well,

he's down. Sometimes these games do not quite deliver but it just has

this feeling this afternoon. Sometimes there is a mismatch in

numbers. Rhys Patchell, bringing the scores back level.

Dan Biggar getting things back under way quickly. How can the Ospreys

respond? The Scarlets are there. Evans, 30th appearance of the season

this afternoon, a record for an Osprey. And one of their inform

players. He's had a good season. If you play often and play with

confidence, just keep on playing. Dan Biggar improvises. King. Ospreys

now. Showing a slight of hand. Down the blindside, excellent ball from

Rhys Webb. No support at the moment. Ospreys on the front foot. Josh

Matavesi, Evans chasing and is just going to beat him. That will be a

Scarlets throw. I think it was Rhys Webb who is another unsung hero. A

great turn of pace to get away but just did not have the support on the

inside. Johnny McNicholl like a tensile, letting them through. Owens

Great stuff from the Scarlets. The left foot of Jonathan Davies to

clear. Very useful to have a lefty in your back ten. Not the most

natural kicker but he gets good length on it. Rob Evans I think it's

a brilliant season. Luckily not to go into the Lions. If it continues

like this I think he will be a mainstay of the Welsh side. --

Bradley Davies, good to see him back after an injury hit season. Crucial

yards. Justin Tipuric. It has support. The Scarlets not committing

to many at this point. Dan Biggar will not want the ball, not many

players committed, just keep it going up the middle. That is what

the Ospreys are doing. Dan Biggar has it. On Evans now. Still Ospreys.

Smith. Tackle from Lewis Rawlins. Baldwin hits it. Rhys Webb again.

The Ospreys again there in numbers. Great hands, he is there, Keelan

Giles. Great strength from the winger. Brilliant play. Patients and

then the inside ball. And Keelan Giles was there. He came up against

Ken Owens, I thought he'd made the tackle but he's just a little bit

too quick. Just watch. Keelan Giles, the inside ball, Rob Evans does not

get there. He is just too quick and elusive. There is the inside ball,

brilliant play by Dan Biggar and Keelan Giles. A great team try. They

did not panic, just kept going. You could see Dan Biggar from the bigger

picture, his hand out saying, do not want the ball. That kid has great

strength. To shrug off an international British Lions hooker,

brilliant play. That is what you have to do. On those phases you just

have to try to pick off the front five. As against number one and

number two. Good vision by Dan Biggar. They had been working on

physique. Even though they are small in

stature they are very powerful. That is what you see someone like Krish

-- Chris Ashton popping up. Just trying to pick off an inside ball.

Responding with the positively to all that pressure. Great from the

Scarlets, a bit of improvisation. Advantage coming their way as well

Jonathan Davies sees a gap. King with the tackle. Will Boyde. Really

similar in stature, Josh Macleod and Will Boyde. Ten on ten. Letting him

know not to come down that channel. That is a surprise.

Is this the first scrum? I think it is. The Ospreys have got to get that

point. Munster could finish top. If Munster win and attempt lose them

they will top the table. That will have a bearing on the semifinals.

Here is that hit again. No gap there from Rhys Patchell. The scrum is

interesting. Number one and number two choice looseheads. A couple of

hookers as well. They know each other inside out. Ospreys get it

back. Pressure cleared. Johnny McNicholl. Rhys Webb underneath it,

it does really well. Getting the ball to Bradley Davies. Rhys Webb

back on his feet. A great little burst from Sam Underhill. The

Ospreys showing their intent. Nigel Owens will call them back. He had to

get behind the back seat but I thought the ball was out. Lovely

off-load. That goes to Rhys Webb. A dynamic player, Sam Underhill. He

will be a big loss. He will be touring with England as well, a huge

prospect. Last week against Ulster, a huge game. Along with Justin

Tipuric. Jones thinks he is a seven! Not quite big enough for an

international six. But it is something England have not got, many

sevens. Needed a bit of subtlety in the past. The players cannot say

Nigel Owens is not communicating! But that is what you want on the

field. Absolutely, that is good. Very clear as well. A soft penalty

as well from Kieron Fonotia. Historically, the Ospreys have

always kind of bullied the Scarlets and even though you are looking at

it, Scarlets play it loose, a couple of passes, the Ospreys will take it

in and tighten it up a little bit and release it when it is the right

time. No ill effects from that huge double

head from Dan Biggar. Rhys Patchell there.

REFEREE: Tell them to keep off the field. He is not happy with the

technical staff to date either, is he? No one is safe when Nigel is

about! Giles haring after that one. Beirne gathered it. Rarely do you

see a ball being challenge from a kick. They take them all so well.

Great drive from the Scarlets. They continue doing what they are doing,

as instructed by Nigel. A gap in front of Scott Williams. Haven't

seen that much of Liam Williams with ball in hand so far. McNicholl in

support again. Patchell. Evans gets a lot of ball in hand. Big hitter.

His Wales colleague, Baldwin. Evans coming in off his wing.

Holds him down. Patchell, spotted, he looked up and saw the little gap.

The kick didn't quite come off but Evans had the scamper under

pressure. I think that's a result for the Ospreys. Plenty of ball,

they didn't make any ground. Not the best kick by Patchell. A good kick

from Scott Williams. Good strength as well, Liam Williams, to state

infield. Williams, rude one this time in the Biggar in midfield with

the help of Baldwin. Davies saw that left gap immediately. Evans again at

fly half. Jonathan Davies through the gap. Dan Evans desperately

trying to keep him on his feet. Steff Evans arrives. Overlap on the

left if they can use it, the Scarlets. Ospreys have slowed it

down. Great play. Its turnover as well. And a penalty. Great defence

from the Ospreys. Referee Mike you have to release as well. I think the

50-50 call on Josh Macleod when Nigel Owen left the Osprey pair to

come inside and said the ball was out and that man just needs a sniff.

You haven't mentioned this player before, have you? LAUGHTER

I think every game! Just lack that support. Is it your seventh -- is he

your seventh for the Lions? He would be. Whether he will be Warren

Gatland's seven is another kettle of fish.

Faletau at eight. A bit of a Welsh bias!

Gruff Rees, Ospreys backs coach with me, pleased with the opening 20

minutes? Pleased to convert one opportunity, some looseness della

Randy finished offence. A word about the intensity? It looks pretty good

from the side. Great to have. Every ruck is heavily contested which gets

the crowd into the game. We might have seen what look like a Munster

try. We will clear that up for you if not before half-time definitely

at half-time. They just have to win the game and then whatever you end

up with, you end up. Set pieces really interesting. In the tight

battles of the scrum, Scarlets definitely have the edge which is

something you wouldn't necessarily have expected before the game.

Definitely got the upper hand in the tight phases at the moment,

Scarlets. Good disruption from Shingler. A box-kick.

REFEREE: Crouch! Stand in the middle, Rhys. Bind, sect. It is not

happening for the Ospreys. Rhodri Jones is a loosehead.

REFEREE: Number three, legs too far back. Yeah. For the uninitiated, the

legs are in a different position? I always used to just push behind, I

never took too much notice! His legs were too far behind, he obviously

lost his balance. Legs too far behind and your head goes straight

to ground. It is not a nice place to be. That is the first time you have

said that this year. Rhys Patchell to bring the Scarlets back to within

a point. Most difficult of his three kicks so far. He is on form with the

boot this afternoon. A good strike. They have decided now, because of

the defence, this is a scrum. He said legs too far back, head to

ground and that's it. They have taken every kick at goal and I

realise how close this game is going to be and how tough the Ospreys'

defence has been and is today. They have thrown everything at them so

far, just come away with three penalties. Great game so far. It has

flown by. 6-6 in the Scotch derby. Dragons

still up against the Blues at Curragh filly. -- Caerphilly.

That was never straight. Nowhere near straight.

This will be interesting because it is the Scarlets' first put in. It is

the sort of area, if you know you are on top of the scrum, you just

keep this in. Will Boyde at eight will try to squeeze out another

penalty because they definitely have that dominance. They could do with a

couple of scrums down in the 22, that would be ideal. With Patchell,

it wouldn't be far off having a crack there. REFEREE: These scrums

have not been good enough, get it in order, please. I think Nigel is

enjoying himself so far this afternoon!

It is all right at the moment... Not for long, though. Smith is not

happy. When a scrum goes that quickly round... That could be the

difference between a proper goal. You can see where Patchell is, he is

walking over to the 22, what will he decide? Wendy scrum goes that

quickly, spinning round, it's obviously not just force, good call

from Nigel Owens. I'm quite surprised he hasn't had a pop. He is

going the touch, isn't he? It's a good front row for the

Scarlets. Will they be surprised they have had this dominance in the

tight head front? I don't think so, they know each other inside out.

Smith is not straight at all. Boyde gets under Samson Lee. I didn't

think there would be this dominant. Rhodri Jones hasn't started many

tight head. REFEREE: This is the last time I'm telling you, give them

space so the whole cut can stay on the mark. Next time it will be a

free kick. -- so the hooker can stay on the mark. The drive comes on

again. Options in midfield. Matavesi with the tackle. Scarlets

edging ever closer. That was high. The winds might have been dipping

but the advantage coming. Good hands. Powering closer towards that

line. Shingler pops the ball back inside that Davies cannot gather.

That was close. It's brilliant play by the Scarlets, they have been

chucking everything but the high tackle was there. How quickly they

have reorganised the defence. Recycling quick balls. Very good

scrum and defence. He has gone high. We will have to look at the other

angle. It's a penalty. It didn't bounce up

off the shoulder, Nigel Owens said he went straight for the neck. The

laws as they are, I think it's a yellow card. He hasn't bounced up,

he went straight around the neck. Nigel Owens only looked at it once.

It's so hard to say. He catches him... It's not a difficult call, I

think that's a penalty. I wouldn't have given a yellow card. It means

the pressure on the Ospreys even greater. Liam Williams. He would

love a try on his final home appearance. Davies had to scramble,

Biggar in the way. Options and numbers as well. Patchell just about

get the ball away the McNicholl. The Kiwi is in and the Scarlets are in

the lead. You can't afford foreign off-load, especially when you are a

man short. They are working well and a very good finish by McNicholl.

Took it upon himself and a well worked Scarlets try. He did well

initially. Habberfield did brilliantly to slow the ball down.

The Ospreys reorganise the defence. It's this off-load, Dan Evans gets

caught in no man's land. A good finish by McNicholl. Left foot was

close to touchline. Just watch. That will be interesting in the slow

motion. The assistant referee put his thumbs up, no need to go for the

touchline. They are looking for a knock-on.

I think Ronnie Habberfield contest, they are looking at maybe a knock-on

for the Scarlets. Yes. Fair play to Dan Biggar... REFEREE: Right back

there in the corner, I want you to have a look at. I thought it went

back off black originally so I just need to check that. This will be

really controversial as they rule it out. This is the wrong replay. He

wants to look at the touchline, the foot first, I think but I don't

think he is asked to do that. He asked for the Liam Williams carry.

Did the ball goes forward off a Scarlet player? That's a knock-on

for me. Liam Williams or Sharron Davies certainly goes forward. --

Garan Davies. They are all talking, the referee...

Just get on with it. This is it. Habberfield does brilliantly. He

stays strong. Two forwards are trying to clean him out. I think

that has come off Liam Williams' hand... That's not the contact we

are looking for. It's the next one when they clear out and Garan Davies

goes for the ball. Keep your eye on number nine.

on. Garan Davies touches it there and the Liam Williams touches it. I

This is a big call. This will be the second loudest try if the song goes.

For me, that is not forward off red -- it has gone forward off red.

Not the most popular person in Parc Y Scarlets at the moment. All the

video referee, Jon Mason. Habberfield, usually a scrum-half,

has come in. Rhys Webb is in the bin.

REFEREE: Can I have the front rows, boys, please? As you are aware, I

met you both with the coaches yesterday and we were all in

agreement that both teams were going to scrummage positively and it is

not happening. Unless it does, people will go off the field. It's

as simple as that. Is that clear? He's had a warning that if this goes

wrong, there are yellow cards. Look at the blank faces from the front

row! A lot of pressure on those six

players now. They are scared to go down now! Berry crouch, bind, sect.

Often ... A good scrum from the Scarlets.

Tipuric and then Matavesi in it. If they turn is over, they are in all

sorts of trouble. Everyone is in there. Slow coming back and they

will just slowly and patiently work their way clear, the Ospreys.

Tipuric took it up, Habberfield in again. Biggar and all sorts of

pressure from Bain. Does well but doesn't get a lot of distance on it

because of the pressure from the Scarlets chasers. The next six

minutes could be crucial, just before half-time with Webb in the

bin. Ospreys trying to hang on in. Scarlets will throw everything at

them. Scarlets have to be aware of there is not a covering player from

the little brother because the number nine is off the field.

Ospreys' indiscipline costing them again.

A very simple free kick, that. Asking for space in the line-out,

just move a little bit. Munster well on top against Connacht. That could

mean they end up as top of the Pro12 at the end of the regular season.

Blues ahead against the Dragons. Where would you rather go, Leinster

or Munster? It is difficult, maybe Munster because you know what is

coming from them, very physical team. Leinster probably a better

all-round team. Good scrum from the Scarlets. Oh. Ospreys try not to

commit to many. Forced back. Good leg drive from Shingler and

MacLeod. Once more, ball in hand, the young openside flanker. A bit of

space for Jonathan Davies to make his way through. They need to bring

him down. He has to pick his head up now because the full-back is

defending in the line, Dan Evans is defending in the line. Owens. They

switch play. Can they get it to McNicholl? Davies is over. Not

quite, held up on that line. The video ref will be in again. Scarlets

digging, waiting, Ospreys desperate in defence. Owens tries to crawl his

way over. And again, hammering away at that line, the Scarlets. Samson

Lee. Now a bit of space. There is space on the far side. He does!

Scarlets are rattle at under all that pressure, in the lead. Good

work by the Scarlets. This man in the bin. They had patience. Good

distribution skills. That little off-load from Ken Owens

on the front foot. You thought Jonathan Davies was over using his

power. Scrambled offence from the Ospreys. Nice passes from Patchell

and McNicholl. Scott Williams, great ball. He takes it standing still but

he is powerful and quick enough to get over to the corner and have a

chance. Scarlets will be very relieved that

they have scored. They have gone over the try line on a few occasions

and been pulled back. They have kept on banging out the door and

eventually they have scored. Ospreys' defence has been phenomenal

really with the half-backs at the four. Really good first half. Great

kick. Brilliant first half. 16-10, Scarlets lead. Still gives the

Ospreys that point they might need. Good passing. Boyde maybe was a bit

flat. 36 minutes of very high quality. When you get a full house,

it shows you that it lifts everything.

One thing Ospreys need now, they've got to get some ball. They haven't

had a lot of ball. This time, the ball has gone... It's

a bit high. That's rare, that that happens. Whoever catches the ball

has two lifters who doesn't get it wrong. Another ball goes begging in

midfield. Rhys Webb in the sin-bin for another minute. They haven't had

the ball for a while and they needed that. They would have been happy to

just soak the last three minutes to keep the ball and keep it in the

Scarlets' 22. Who has caught your eye so far? That guy, Robert Evans,

has been very influential in this game. Also, defensively, Biggar and

Webb have just been a great battle at the front. You haven't really

seen any turnovers from either back row or huge ball carrying. It's just

been a committed performance by both packs and maybe it's just the

creativity of the Scarlets that is just edging it, which is why they

are six points in front. Food for thought for the Ospreys head coach,

Steve Tandy. He will still be quite happy, purely because of the

possession and territory of the Scarlets, he will be happy they are

only six points behind, I think. The momentum is huge in sport and I

think the momentum will come. Davies spots a gap and breaks. Fantastic

run. We know he has got pace, has he got support? David outside. The

league's top scorer extends the Scarlets' lead. That is a brilliant

try. That is a brilliant... Who says you

can't score tries from first phase? A brilliant try. Utilising the

space, just watch. Gareth Davies, takes Underhill on. He is gone. He

beat him at pace and it's all about support play. Brilliant support for

Jonathan Davies and Steffan Evans, brilliant play as well. A fantastic

try. It all comes from taking the back rower on the pace. Good finish.

Brilliant Scarlets try. Nice to be watching rugby played at that pace.

If you have got the pace to use it. It is one-on-one. The Ospreys'

scrum-half, Evans, ran the wrong side.

Patchell with the conversion. Really costly sin-binning of recent web for

the Ospreys, he is coming back on. -- Rhys Webb for the Ospreys. That

is one of the best tries I have seen all season. As you said, what a

costly sin-binning that was. For me, not sure that was a yellow card.

A really interesting conversation going on between Dan Biggar and

Nigel Owens throughout the whole game. Dan Biggar will get it back

under way. Scarlets just have that ability to find the gaps.

It is half-time. A game that has lived up to the hype completely and

utterly. A yellow card, disallowed tries, fantastic tries, hard-fought

and at times breathless rugby as well. The Scarlets lead at

half-time. Perhaps just as well the Ospreys do not need that point as it

turns out. Let's go down to the touchline. Ken, that try showed you

could tear it up behind but you also have forward dominance. I think we

need to just keep being smart. We got a couple of notches on but given

a great platform with can give the banks an opportunity. It is just

being smart and not giving away those penalties. Bad luck on your

try. Still a work in progress! I'm a bit disappointed in that.

No try. Great hands inside to Keelan Giles. What strength from the

winger. They come to within one point.

And on the stroke of half-time we had another try from the Scarlets.

Fantastic play in the build-up. Steff Evans getting on the end of

this one. We said Scarlets, their attack on fine form. And just as

half-time approaches evidence that they have it within them to rip that

Ospreys defence when they need to. Very interesting half-time score,

23-10 to the Scarlets. Nip and tuck for much of the first

half. But Martin, in the last 510 minutes the complexion of the game

seems to change. Brilliant game. For regional rugby, people saying the

game is dying but not today. Brilliant location. We'll nip and

tuck, the yellow card was the turning point. It is a long way back

now for the Ospreys. They dominated the first five or ten minutes, it

was all happening deep in Ospreys territory. They got close on a

couple of occasions. Only managed a penalty from all that pressure and

then that Keelan Giles try. What a finish from the winger. A classic

smash and grab but a bit too early in the game. They were containing

the Scarlets and then got into the 22. Look at the clean at this ruck.

Josh Matavesi on the inside. Nice path -- pass from Gareth Edwards.

The angle then is great, too much to do for Rob Evans and he has enough

power to get over. A great try from Keelan Giles. A great clean-out. Dan

Biggar is squaring up. Squaring up to Aaron Shingler. He had a lot to

do and did well. A good effort from Rhys Webb. People say Ken Owens

should have made it difficult. Keelan Giles is so powerful. Then

you sensed it was a classic Ospreys performance. But not to be in the

first half. Scarlets getting the nudge up front, perhaps unexpected

going into this game, they lost Jake Ball and looked a bit more

lightweight than usual in the front five. But they seem to have the edge

in discipline. Not just the yellow card but the few positions you could

see a set piece, Ken Owens working, in a pincer movement with Rob Evans.

That gives you that field position and of course under these new

regulations if you do not tackle low you suffer the consequences. And

that has been the turning point in the game. He is too high on it and

it almost cost them. I talked about the midfield, three of them get

sucked in to Rhys Patchell who manages to get away. And then Keelan

Giles has too much to do. But the signs were there even though it was

no try. And it started to come to fruition with the Scarlets attack.

All season they played anywhere. They run the ball from anywhere and

it is bearing fruit. How critical is that try on the stroke of half-time?

That is huge. Just good patients, looking at the Ospreys in defence,

they did not panic. It is a simple thing, the passing is good. Scott

Williams to Johnny McNicholl. Will Boyde a little bit flat on it but he

has the pace and the power to get over. Credit to the Scarlets for

being cynical. Ten Ospreys players in the corner and the extra man,

will Boyde, but great skill to get it to him. What are you saying in

the Ospreys dressing room now because as we discussed, there are

almost guaranteed to be in the semis. Ulster I think one point

ahead at the moment against Leinster but they need a miracle to get in.

Ospreys needed one point to secure themselves that plays for sure but

ultimately they think they're in psychologically but they do not want

to roll over in the second half. Knowing there is still a lot to play

for and they do not want to be chasing anything too early. They do

not want to keep giving away penalties. It will be a slow and

steady built into the second half. Get some penalties themselves. Get

close and hopefully take it to the last ten minutes. That is what I

would be saying. When the Ospreys had the ball they looked dangerous.

They have caused problems for the Scarlets but they have not been able

to get enough of it today. The Scarlets need to prove they are the

number one team in Wales and on the evidence of what we have seen they

are. Ball in hand especially. They're not the most visible of

teams but what I like about them, they're all comfortable. We've seen

both skills from Rob Evans, Tadhg Beirne for them has been the find of

the season. Great to watch. And at the minute they have that edge up

front as well. They are the complete team at the moment. When your coach

of the Welsh region win the home games, get the support behind you

and win Welsh derbies. They are massively important and they are

doing it. And you said at the top how the Scarlets are using their

attacking play inventively. Trying to do things to spook opposition

defences. Creating overlaps. There has been more evidence of that

today. We saw that early in the game, that near try from Ken Owens.

You can see what I'm talking about. They go in field from near the

touchline. Look at them pulling back again. You still need great skill.

You have players like Rob Evans and Ken Owens along with the backs then

you can create things like that. Lovely hands from Rob Evans. He

needs a bit more troubling practice! -- trampoline. Worth pointing out

that the Scarlets had a couple of disallowed tries and could be much

further ahead. Seconds after coming up and all the highlights of the

weekend coming up on scrum five Sunday as well. Once the dust has

settled on super Saturday we will round up all the action from the

weekend and look ahead to the semifinals in the company of

Jonathan Davies and Nicky Robinson. We also look ahead to the looming

Lions tour and get the thoughts of a couple of legends from two different

hemispheres. If you'd asked me 12 months again -- ago was there any

chance I would have said, do not be stupid. Are they good enough? I

believe they are. We will talk about Lions in a few

moments but a round-up of what else is going on on super Saturday for

Bubba couple of other games that have significance in terms of the

top four. First Ulster against Leinster. Currently 10-6 ahead in

night, Wilson with the opening try for Ulster. Munster romping away

against Connacht at 24 have an ill at half-time. O'Donoghue barrelling

down the touchline. And the Blues against the Dragons, that

Caerphilly, home game for the Dragons. They started brilliantly

with a try in the first five minutes. And this beauty has put the

Blues into the lead. 14-11 is the score to the Blues at half-time in

Caerphilly. Of course the Blues are already into the play-off spots for

the 20th Champions Cup place. We've yet to find out who they will play.

It will be a French side. One of five already in the mix. Ben

Fitzpatrick was thought looking ahead to the Lions tour and last

week he told me he thinks Liam Williams will seriously challenge

Stuart Hogg for the starting 15 jersey for the Lions. I think Ken

Owens has been a breath of fresh air for the game. He has not come

through the traditional Academy Road. He just plays the game of the

cuff. You never know what you're going to get from him. He was given

a few yellow cards early on but he's not the biggest man physically but

he has that innate ability. Great skills and just a natural rugby

player. Not one of these manufactured rugby players. He has

bring Britain for the Scarlets. You cannot blame him for going to the

Saracens. -- he has been brilliant. Four years ago he was still a

scaffolder. He would have dreamt that Fitzpatrick had tapped to be a

Lions star. He is a great fellow that the players like him. He is

very brave, that is what I like about him, highly skilled. You want

that as a coach. And good luck to him with Saracens. I know Jonathan

Spratt is also moving on after today. We wish him all the best. We

certainly do. The teams are out, we have a cracker of a breast have.

Let's hope the second lives up to the billing. We can return to

commentary team, Jonathan Davies and Gareth Lewis. Looking forward to the

second half, the first was a belter. If he does not get that try a

wonderfully in will go looking for it. In the final minutes. Two

crampon has been an eventful time with the Scarlets. Six years, 107

appearances, 28 tries, two red cards and a dropped goal. He has done it

all. They're being told not to cross the

When they had possession they did very well with it. The Scarlets had

so much possession. We want to see the Ospreys going for it now in the

go and the forwards in support as well. Sam Underhill. Taking a while

to move away and Nigel Owens not happy with the speed. Rhys Webb

takes the penalty quickly. He has got pace. Josh Matavesi in at

scrum-half. Sam Underhill in there again. Kieron

Fonotia has lost it. A chance for the Scarlets to counterattack.

Davies again. Showing that pace and speed. As does Evans. The flag is up

on the far side. When the Scarlets have the ball in hand they have

cracked on apace. That extra yard of pace. It creates a question marks in

the defence. Any problems and you take off Dan Bigger, they're in the

semifinal, just get him off if there's any doubt. Josh Matavesi

goes to ten. A couple of outside backs. So any questions you have got

to get him through for next week, simple.

Warren Gatland will be looking on with interest. Dan Bigger one of

three Ospreys player on the field this afternoon will be on the Lions

tour. I think it is nothing serious, just a sprain. Just watch this

acceleration. Straightens up first of all. Keelan Giles did really

well. The pace is so quick. Getting

to see this again. They have done a lot of this in the season. He picks

up through his own players and they do a little lock. Some see it as a

clever block but is this deliberate? Not much in it. If you are Justin

played in every game for the Ospreys this season. They're going to

corner. What do I know! The driving line has gone well for the Scarlets.

The Ospreys getting nowhere really in those phases. They are in try

scoring form. And look to be enjoying themselves as well which

makes the difference. It has been good to watch. The way they are

playing, they would not be scared of taking anyone on. Here comes the

Desperate defence now from the Ospreys. Best levels it back. A

crucial for our five metres and penalty for the Ospreys. Not quite

sure what happened. Ken Owens just lost patience. Should've stayed

attached to them all. He has broken off. Good scrambling defence from

would go to Munster. No, Leinster. There was a school of thought that

they would prepare at the other way around. You know you're going over

there, they always have a chance, the Scarlets, the way they are

playing. And Ospreys are always hard to beat. So I would not write off

either side going into the semifinals, to be honest. Something

I would not have said before this season. No chance for Tom

Habberfield. Back they come. Not bad for the fans either if they

could get the flights. David Bulbring comes on, the South

African. In the Scarlets second row. McLeod cleans up. Evans again,

Just spotting a little gap, a bit high for Jonathan Davies to chase.

Can they capitalise? Not much space for Kieron Fonotia but he makes his

own space. Steff Evans does really well. It does not quite come off the

New Zealander. The first half was so good, difficult to keep up that

standard. But just needs a little spark. I think you need the Ospreys

to score for the sake of the game. But Scarlets just do seemed in

control, the Ospreys scrambling. I wonder if Justin Tipuric can

provide that little something for the Ospreys. A little injection of

something needed. David Bulbring. Slowed down by

Bradley Davies. Comes off the outside of his foot in the end.

Aaron Shingler who clears up this time. Good leg drive from McLeod.

Rhys Patchell, Tom Habberfield underneath. Great take, goalkeeper

style. Here comes that injection of space but it is from the Scarlets,

not the Ospreys. All goes to ground. McLeod. Evans. Good hands from Rob

Evans. So comfortable on the ball. Smith with a tackle on Owens,

Scarlets looked the most likely to tackle the next try. Fonotia brings

down Davies. Davies with a shoulder. I'd love to

see a stat, how many times Robert Evans has been in there. He might be

winded or a shoulder, I'm not sure. He's having a look. REFEREE: Time is

out. I think maybe they didn't bring their arms in.

The crowd reacted straightaway. Bradley Davies has hurt himself.

Shoulder to the head, it's accidental for me but... Is an can't

get to it. He leads with his shoulder, but it is accidental, it

just looks bad. I think that is a little clumsy, a little accidental.

Watch where his arm goes. He can't get his arm up because it gets

caught under the arm of Underhill. That is happening so quickly, he is

spinning... And also, you lead with the shoulder when you tackle and the

arm goes around. So his arm couldn't come up to wrap it round. Watch his

left arm, it gets caught. Under Underhill's armpit. He tries to get

his arm up but he can't. He goes down, his arm goes down, he can't.

Nigel said, initial reaction... It is a contact sport at the end of the

day. REFEREE: When you make an attempt to

tackle, you have to do make an attempt to wrap your arm... Disagree

with Nigel. How can you wrap your arm around iPlayer, the ball

carrier, when your player gets in the way? I think that's harsh. I

don't think it's a penalty. They didn't show that once at full speed.

Full speed is such a difference than real time, when it is slow down.

There would be a great contest between those two, Bradley Davies

and Nigel Owens! He is chop see, is heat, Bradley Davies?

Sometimes, you have to empathise with the game as well.

Rhys Patchell, another opportunity to just edged the Scarlets that

crucial two converted tries clear. He had a good, long look at that

time and again, just off. The wind was in his face which will make it

more difficult. Davies has had a superb game today.

He has been on the front foot. Two great players coming up against each

other. McNicholl breezes past Rhys Webb. He needs support. Rhys Webb

with the tackle. McNicholl offers himself again. Liam Williams can't

quite gather. He would have loved that one but the Ospreys can break

back. They have got the overlap on the right-hand side, they have to

use it, the advantage is gone. Not much room for Giles to work in. They

are living off scraps, the Ospreys. The Scarlets really slowed that

down. Only one way they can go. And they do.

The chase has got to be good. Patchell is underneath it. It was a

good chase as well. Giles nails him but it is a quick ball back.

They overload the short side, they have got the confidence to take the

ball to the line, it is like a rugby league side. Everything is done at

pace by the Scarlets this afternoon. Patchell gets it away to McNicholl

who sets off down the field again. The bounce was almost kind. Did

Tipuric Knox on? Nigel Owens says it went backwards. Breathless passage

of play. Boyde with the tackle, Tipuric fetish yield. Matavesi has

to stoop. -- Tipuric is the to shield.

No real way through for the Ospreys. It is downfield. Patchell will

gather. Liam Williams. He gets it away to Jonathan Davies, he has

Evans in support. Scott Williams. It is Aaron Shingler. That might just

about seal it. Great first half, they are carrying on in the second

only Scarlets are flying. I tell you what has been so impressive with the

Scarlets today, the broken field, heads up, they are scanning. If you

do that to see what's on, they straighten up, look at this, it is

about counterattack. Liam Williams says, let's try to create three on

two. There is the off-load again. So many men in support from here.

That's an easy run in. They have been mightily impressive. This form

and confidence, it will be one hell of a battle in the semifinal. He has

had a great game, Aaron Shingler. Fantastic support play. Great

athlete. They are creating something out of nothing every time they touch

the ball, the Scarlets. So many X Factor players. Great conversion

from Rhys Patchell as well. Scarlets one try short of the bonus point.

This will give the Scarlets huge confidence. Ospreys have no game

next week so they have a long time to stew on this. Scarlets totally

dominant. Plenty of time for that force try

for the Scarlets. Ken Owens off, job done. The Lions hooker. Ryan Elias

is on. No way through for Evans. Tom Price

with the tackle. A bit of open space for Giles. Evans

is equal to it. They have made ground, though.

Options on for Rhys Webb and Spratt behind the line. They need carriers

now, the Ospreys. Maybe get Underhill, King, just getting over

that gain line. Its patient from the Ospreys rather

than pacing. They will need to make the hard yards and burst through, as

Jonathan said. Matavesi in support. Haven't got quite quite the numbers.

Liam Williams gathers. Spratt with the tackle. Lee into the midriff of

Tipuric. Trying to get any part of his body on the ball but it is once

more back with the Scarlets. Jonathan Evans on as well as

replacement for Gareth Davies. Williams almost, fingertips, it's

gone backwards as well. Have Scott Williams got the pace to beat

Habberfield? He does ever so well. Elias is there. The Scarlets need a

quick ball. They were too eager, though. Didn't stay on their feet

and the bonus point for now goes begging. He was never going to

outrun both players. I think Dan Evans is asking for a knock-on and I

thought it was, if I'm honest. Good pace from Habberfield the rundown

Scott Williams who is very quick. I don't like this is chop sink to the

referee, just shut your mouth and get on with the game. Just get on

with it, I don't get it. I think soon, you would see referees yellow

card somebody. Just to nip it in the bud straightaway. You're not going

to stop it and then the kids will follow it. Just ask the referee

quietly. The Ospreys have brought on the most effective ball-carrier, the

years, the squat figure, Dan Baker. Immediately, Rhys Webb spots a

little gap. He is still going. This is better from the Ospreys. No one

Tipuric's shoulder so takes the tackle.

Scarlets just soaking it up at the moment, though. Evans needs support,

trying to do the choke tackle, the Scarlets but it is back with Rhys

Webb. The defence, they have done so well, reorganising. Forcing the

Ospreys back so brilliant defence from the Scarlets. I just feel there

is a dominance. Look at that, 37, 20 7%. 9% of the Scarlets 22. Total

domination. The Scarlets look sharper with and without the ball.

Getting off the line, making those hits. With the ball, you can see how

dangerous they are. Total dominance. One thing, you have to remember the

Ospreys have an oral nothing match next week. You might have some

Davies who offer something different. One big miss is Ashley

Beck. If they have all those players back next week, it's an all or

nothing game. Underdogs, away from home... You would never write the

Ospreys off. They have been there before. They have won away. It's

just been an unusual couple of weeks for them, so dominant normally.

They are happy to spread the ball and find the gaps. And a gap in

front. This is the fourth try, for the bonus point. The Ospreys needed

one and the Scarlets get one. That has been the difference, comfortable

on the ball. And the pace, acceleration, lovely off-load and

then just he just gassed it. Steff Evans stepped inside, little back

door to an McNicholl. Great step. Nothing is on there. The Ospreys

defence gets lazy. Great finish by McNicholl. Totally dominant. Came

from a passage of play again where Scarlets are totally dominant in

defence. Turnover the ball and leads to another try. McNicholl definitely

has gas. Kieran Giles for the Ospreys making his way off the

field. They have enjoyed the afternoon, the Scarlets, Steve Tandy

hasn't. I'm surprised Robert Evans hasn't

taken a conversion if I'm honest! He's not on the field, that is

probably why! They can't take off bench.

Sloppy from the Ospreys but good play from the Scarlets.

They just look threatening every time they get the ball and spread

it. Good defence this down from the Ospreys. You feel another one might

be coming, though. Evans still not down.

Scarlets just loosening things up a little bit. Kruger is on. Davies

spots a gap. He has got the gas, the bounce is there. A great try from

the Scarlets. Try number five. Well, well, well. Scarlets romping away

with it. The intensity has dropped from the Ospreys defence and they

are just picking them off now and again. No line speed, they are just

standing off. Lovely kick and the bounce of the ball favours the

Scarlets. There is the chip on the finish by Jonathan Davies.

Comprehensive performance. Totally dominant by the Scarlets. The Irish

credit. They have given me players the freedom to want to just try

things. Really enjoying the rugby. They are really enjoying today

because this has not happened in a long time. Scarlets dominant over

Evans, always tries hard. The Scarlets crowd loving every single

an angled to work with. It is an Ospreys attacking line-out.

The body language of the Ospreys, they look shell-shocked. Taking

their time coming to the line-up. They just have not been able to

provide that impetus in the second half. They have been totally

Ospreys they need their players back, because there is no edge. They

do not look like a threat. I think with Ashley Beck may be and Alun Wyn

Jones, it would give them more direction and purpose. So I think

they need those players back. Sam Davies maybe to bring him off the

bench. I'm not sure about his injury situation. That is what they need.

But Scarlets, they're on fire. They will not go into a semifinal on a

higher note. Beating their rivals so comprehensively, playing so well and

scoring tries. They will go there full of confidence and what a game.

Because Leinster will not close shop. They will play football as

well and that could be a great game. We're going to continue, Liam

Williams may get a lap of honour at the end. Final play. Is there a six

confident. Even those who came on as a replacement. It was just very

good. And lived up to the hype. I say again, when you have got a big

crowd and great atmosphere, it raises the whole event. The players

lift their composure, everything. It is just a better spectacle. And

today was a very good day. I can see Phil Steele on the

that stand in the pants in this season and since your time with

Scarlets? It is always nice to get one up on the neighbours. In the

last few weeks since the Six Nations we showed we are getting points,

getting performances and building by the season. That is pleasing. It was

a good performance today. How enjoyable is to play because it

looks like everyone wants to get their hands on the balls. The coach

encourages us to play, they put freedom in your hands. It is making

sure that we execute. And most of the time today we did that. We need

to still sharpen up a few things but we're going in the right direction.

You're the semifinals, two weeks break. Would you rather get out

there next week? You never complain about a week off. It gives us an

extra week to prepare and freshen up the boys. Some of them picked up a

few bumps. But we will -- we will not take our foot off the pedal. It

is exciting to be part of this at the moment.

So 23-10 at half-time and it looked for a long time as if they would not

be much action in the second half. But then after 15 minutes to

Scarlets cut loose. So much damage done. We talked about their backs

and this was arguably the pick of the second half although they were

all brilliant in their own way. Aaron Shingler under the posts,

delight on his face. And then Johnny McNicol who looked so threatening

all afternoon. He came very close marginally before this. It looked

like nothing was on but he went on the outside racing all the way to

the line. He deserved that. But it was not the last act, Jonathan

Davies, and this created by him with a neat little kick through. Finished

by him as well. Back inside and Jonathan Davies, Jonathan Spratt and

Dafydd Howells despairing. That put the icing on the cake for the

Scarlets. They conceded one late try which was nothing but consolation

for the Ospreys. And it was Dan Baker who crossed over from short

lane. A record for the Scarlets against the Ospreys, their highest

points total and winning margin against their West Wales rivals. You

can see how delighted they are. The fan standing to cheer them. The sun

has come out and the players milking the applause on the pitch as you

would expect. Before we talk about the game itself let's ride up what

has happened on super Saturday. We have some blinding games in the

other rounds. We start with East Wales derby at Caerphilly. The Blues

marginally ahead last time checked. Not sure if the final whistle had

two Ulster try. They did not get the bonus point they needed to get

themselves in the make them will not qualify but they have beaten

Leinster and that condemns Leinster to second in the league. Munster

finished top after a hammering of defending champions Connacht. So

there it is, Munster finishing top. They will play at home against the

Ospreys. The Scarlets travel to Leinster for the second semifinal,

second against third. That is life in just under two weeks' time on

scrum 5 live. We can go back to Phil Steele now on the touchline with

someone else. Rhys Webb of the Ospreys, bad luck on the defeat. I

have to ask about the yellow card, it was such a crucial turning point

of the game. What did you think? It was pretty harsh really but I could

have got away without doing the high shot. It is what it is, I do not

think it cost us the game. The scoreboard is pretty embarrassing.

But we have got into the semifinal. Of course it is a shame to lose the

big derby. But we will learn from this and learn quickly. How much

credit you give the Scarlets question might they did well, we

know how exciting their backs could be. They took their chances when

they came. But we had ill discipline and errors that gifted them. We will

learn quickly, we have to do, and look forward to a big semifinal. And

you are playing Munster. Do you prefer Leinster? They're both as

good as each other. It is the semifinal and everyone should be

looking forward to it. We have to dust ourselves off pretty quickly.

Good luck for that semi. You can rely on Rhys Webb to accentuate the

positives but you could see that dejection on his face. The Ospreys

not used to being on the end of a hammering like that. A record

victory for the Scarlets against their West Wales rivals. And no

happier man then their head coach. Congratulations. You have your poker

face on but you must be delighted. Very happy. As the game wore on we

were able to get a lot of tries. We spoke about the philosophy of the

Scarlets team. You really have sharpened up the attack. It seems to

be a philosophy that goes through the team, not afraid to attack from

anywhere. When you have numerical advantage, it does not matter where

you are on the field. We spot those opportunities. And the guys

communicate well and we take full advantage of opportunities when we

create them. You would have fancied your chances running into this game

today, with the money you have been on. But did you think you would win

in such a convincing fashion? Not with that scoreline to be honest.

But we are happy. We knew we were capable of a good performance. And

we want about going deep the semifinals. There was talk about

resting place but that was never going to happen. We wanted an

intense game to as ripe for the Irish side in the semifinal.

Standing ovation for Williams as he left the field. He is going to be

missed. He is world-class. Love him to bits. If we had 15 of him we

would be unplayable. He got a great ovation and richly deserved. And it

is Leinster now in the semifinals, away in Dublin. Did you have a

preference? We know Leinster is a very good team. Munster a powerful

side. But we will have to do our homework and make sure we have the

defence in line. I'm sure you want to go celebrate with your team.

Scarlets performance, at half-time, 23-10, and then they just exploded

into life. Everyone has spoken about how well they attacked. But for me

it was defensively as well, the energy they had in defence. There

was no James Davies today, no Jake Ball, but it was seamless. The guys

who came in, the shift they put in as well to allow the rock stars

behind to do their stuff, superb. I've never seen a Scarlets, Ospreys

performance so dominant from the Scarlets. Really outstanding. So

many good tries, talk about that Aaron Shingler try. He has real

pays. Used to be a fast bowling cricketer. Johnny McNicholl went

through, lovely bit of play. Aaron Shingler is there, and this was not

quite to be. But moments later, this was a loose kick. Jonathan Davies

highlighted there, all the way back. Lee Williams in and now away. I

thought he was excellent, he would've been my man of the match.

There is Aaron Shingler on the inside and you get what you deserve

about hard work. Pulling away from the Ospreys and they just blew them

away. You have some apologising to do! We

have not got a great deal of time left. But we talked all season about

the money into the leak and how the team that plays away the semifinals

has never made it to the final. Home advantage so much in this league.

But on the kind of form the Scarlets have shown, you would fancy them to

go away and do a job wherever it was. It is Dublin, do you fancy

them? Absolutely, they have momentum, confidence, they are

enjoying themselves and hopefully it will be a nice dry night which suits

Scarlets. There are a smart team. They like to play open and expansive

rugby as well. But no doubt they are able to go to Dublin and win. That
