Ospreys v Dragons Scrum V

It is another derby weekend in the

pro-14. The Ospreys hope their

performance against Saracens last

week will kick-start their league

campaign. The Dragons arrive hungry

and confident.

Yes, hello, good. Welcome for

another full-blooded Welsh Derby

here.

Good evening. And a bit of a

European break - both of these sides

arrive energised. The Dragons with a

win in Russia.

From the Ospreys'

point of view a cracking

performance. A corner-turner for

them. A Derby this weekend. It is

all about physicality, Derbies and

they have been off the pace the

opening minutes of the games in

Europe. Where they have struggled is

defensively. They conceded over four

tries a game. The Ospreys will look

to come out large.

Sam Cross is the

name on everyone's lips. He starts

again. Just his second game of

professional rugby in two years. It

has raised a few eyebrows. What is

Warren Gatland's thinking?

Typical

for selection by Gatland. He's a

talented player. We have a few key

number sevens who have been in the

squad previously. So, but it's an

opportunity for him. He comes with

the sevens programme. He's an

athletic number seven. It's a

brilliant opportunity for him. It's

a big challenge for him tonight.

A

huge opportunity. Justin Tipuric and

Dan Lydiate were both injured last

week. That is what paved the way for

him to start against Saracens. They

are side-lined tonight. He starts

again. What does his head coach say

about him.

They have been speaking about the

man of the moment, Sam Cross. What

are your thoughts on him?

Did well.

Diligent. Wants to go about his

work. In training he's been

positive. Against Saracens and now

in the national squad.

You have

taken confidence from two excellent

performances from two best sites in

Europe. You still lost and are

looking for a win. How much pressure

is on you for a win?

You put

pressure on yourselves. We are

performing well against two huge

teams, like you said. We are

disappointed in losing, but we can

take comfort in the fact we are

performing. Ultimately we need to

turn per for mapses into the crease.

Tandy talking about the performances

in Europe.

Bernard Jackman joins me now. The

Ospreys have not won in seven. That

is the longest losing sequence in

their history. A good time to play

them?

I don't think so. I have seen

the tide turning for the Ospreys

over the last couple of weeks. They

are a quality side. They have a huge

depth and a lot of experience in

internationals. A bad start.

Obviously missing some players at

the start of the season. Coming

together at the right time.

In terms

of the Dragons, it has been

interesting for you in Europe. You

have got the monkey off your back,

the first away win in two years. How

much of a positive is that for you

guys?

It is something we had to get

over. Against The Blues we lost our

composure a wlilt bit, being in

front. -- a little bit, being in

front. That milestone, a long time

since we won a Welsh Derby away from

home. It is something we want to fix

as soon as we can. Are we good

enough tonight? We are getting

better. On form, the Osprey lazy be

favourites.

Briefly, you haven't had

much faith in your ben nch recent

weeks do. You have faith in them

tonight?

I don't think people should

get game time unless they deserve

it. We gave people it early doors.

But thankfully against Newcastle

away and in Russia last week we saw

the level of performance we expect.

Today we have a bench we have no

problem bringing on if we need to.

For Gavin Henson a return to the

region where he spent six seasons. A

lot of these players for the Ospreys

will be familiar, with the talents

of Gavin Henson. They will know what

he can bring. The man leading out

them on to the field, Alun Wyn

Jones. All eyes on Sam Cross. Three

days ago chosen in the Welsh squad.

Tonight playing his first league

game. Sam Parry alongside, having

started the first three of the

season. Owen Watkin another pick in

the Welsh squad, after missing all

last season. Tom Habberfield, for

Rhys Webb.

He's looking forward to his return,

Dan Biggar is looking forward to

playing against Gavin Henson and Ian

Davis, the Welshman in charge of the

Welsh Derby. And after a couple of

weeks in Europe, what better way to

Dan Biggar looks like he wants to

get on with things. He means

business. It was him with rip that

created that little turn over there.

You get the sense tonight that The

Dragons need to make the most of the

position they have in the Ospreys'

half.

Habberfield. Owen Watkin was looking

for the short flat pass.

It's the scrum-half who gets the

better of it and sends Hallam Amos

on his way. Morgan, celebrating a

recall to the Welsh squad. As is

this man, Leon Brown. The first

time, the prop was 21 yesterday.

Fine player, worthy of his call up.

Already we have seen a contrast in

styles. Hallam Amos steps up. A lot

of width on The Dragons attack, both

sides of the ruck.

Cory Hill pass out of play, but by

an Ospreys hand. . They have come

here to play, as I say, they play

this two--four-two system, where you

have forwards in the wider channels.

And what started this passage of

play, Gavin Henson, much like Dan

Biggar, your tens now. And James

Hook is good at that.

don't seem to be constructing

this a few times this season - a lot

of phrases, no end result. This time

though can they make something? Dan

period defending for the drag gonz.

They are doing so effectively --

Dragons. They are doing so

effectively at the moment.

26 phases later, the Ospreys come

away empty handed. . Well, this has

been a criticism of the Ospreys

attack this season. They lack ball

carriers. 26 phases. And you end up

with Alun Wyn Jones on the wing.

Who's carrying the ball. Who's

looking to bust it through? You have

your captain in second on the wing

and it becomes an easy defensive

session in the end for The Dragons.

It all came from a real solid break

from the Ospreys. This man, Ashley

Beck is in the team for this. A big

man. Lovely off-load. There's one of

the form players for the Ospreys.

Alun Wyn Jones, he has started well

in this game. When you get doin the

22 you need need some form of

strategy to get over the line.

The Ospreys never did that.

Ashley Beck, you feel, his career

hadn't been blighted with injuries,

would have earned more than the

seven caps he has for Wales.

I

totally agree. Picked him up at the

oss prays, as a 15-year-old. He

could have gone on and played more

times for Wales. He's shown glimpses

of that in his first ten minutes.

James Thomas still struggling a

little bit for The Dragons.

Wants to carry on in this defensive

line-out.

Over the top, so close to The

Dragons' try line and Lewis Evans

drives them away.

A brave call, maybe. But one that

has worked well for The Dragons.

The Dragons may have dominated the

opening five minutes, since then

it's the men in black who've had the

ball.

This is the problem they have

- Nicky Smith a lone carrying

figure, now it's all slow. They need

to construct something better. The

centres need to get together with

the blindside wing.

Sam Davies, Keelan Giles spinning

away. The Dragons just defending on

that ten-metre line and Giles almost

breaking through. Pretorius and

Hill, made sure he didn't... Sam

In the end Dan Biggar has to put

boot to ball. Looks for the corner.

Something Special in the game.

Another one who's is he a winger, is

anywhere. Consistent.

ball. No second-line defence. A

that. A good exit from their own

if it is forward.

Just this little chance earlier on

for The Dragons. Look at Henson in

Morgan. If he's on his bike a little

bit and on Tyler Morgan's shoulder

then Sean Connor will be shown that

on Monday as a potential try. Just

the fine margins which can make a

difference.

Saw a run by Tyler Morgan. Shows

potential that he's got.

It will be nice to see him get a run

again. Injury-free. Still a young

man. 22 years old and it will be

nice to see him in a Welsh shirt.

Well, we saw James Thomas

struggling. On the try line. Aaron

Wainwwright has come on to replace

him.

Sarel Pretorius and Gavin Henson.

Good battle in the centre. Jack

Four Welsh centres. It is good to

see.

Three 238 year olds, a

22-year-old and Jared who will be 22

in December. Sam Davies...

-- three 23 year olds, a 22-year-old

and Jared who will be 22 in

Outside the 22, anyway. A bit of a

rush of blood from Gavin Henson.

He

was hurried a little bit there. He

won't be happy with that. He put his

side under pressure. They defended

very well.

Unfortunately after

singing Tyler Morgan's praises, he's

done on one knee, or he was and he

was is leaving as well. That is a

blow for The Dragons, losing two

players in quick succession -

flanker and an influential centre as

well.

One thing about The Dragons at

the moment is maybe a lack of

strength in-depth. Look at the bench

compared to the Ospreys. Average of

#29d on the Osprey bench.

Steve Tandy recognises that in his

selections.

Wanted to keep those

players on for as long as possible

before making changes. They are

doing an awful lot of defending as

well.

high on Rosser on Giles.

This is better from the Ospreys.

They have four backs together. Now

the forwards can carry to the 22.

is the quickest of the lot. Keelan

of him at this level. This is his

league debut, yet he's in the Welsh

And that's a bit of tired creeping

in. They have defended a lot of sets

here. The Ospreys would have been

looking for that - get the field

position. This man adds some class,

doesn't he, Ashley Beck.

He looks

the one different player at the

moment.

And they get their first points on

the board, or they go for the corner

and keep the pressure on.

Firstly I would like to go for the

corner, apply the pressure. Really

send a message out to the away team.

You are going to defend more. A good

decision on my part by Alun Wyn

Jones.

The last thing The Dragons forwards

would have wanted to see, is Dan

Biggar aiming for the corner. But

you feel the Ospreys this season

have to take these chances. Their

strike rate is not good enough at

the moment.

be the one to try and crash over the

line with it.

Habberfield quite happy for the time

being to let them get on with it and

another pick and go. Again just held

out by Dragons. Pretorius, play on

says the referee. Sam Cross lays it

back again.

created that. A lovely off-load.

He's been all over the pitch, in

fairness to him. A real engine in

him and shows some skills. But again

out of play and The Dragons have

again defended fully and while they

come back to the line-out, let's go

pitch side and see if we can find

out about the injuries so far.

Thomas had his right knee strapped.

This is the more worrying one for

The Dragons. Tyler Morgan, you can

see his right ankle looks in a bit

of pain. It is a shame because it

would have been great to see him, a

full match against Owen Watkin.

Tyler, we can only wish him all the

best for that.

get him in one on ones. That is the

first time he has had a one-on-one

opportunity, he is electric.

The

tackle count for the Dragons has

the Blues Derby. Already two off the

Ospreys up at Saracens last week.

Good young player. They are lacking

ball-carriers. Smith is good at ball

carrying. But it is going to come

from one of the centres, you feel.

they go for the strip in the tackle.

The defence is incredible.

The technical tackles are great.

runaround Henson. Biggar, and he has

eventually got the ball down. The

grounding is good. They are checking

the foot wasn't over, but it is Dan

Biggar that eventually gets the

score for the Ospreys. It had to

come, and Biggar get it.

It needed

somebody to grab the game by the

horns. Dan Biggar flashed the other

side of the ruck, picked his head

up, he saw Gavin Henson, and took

him on. You see him and Sam Davies,

rocking to the other side. He goes

one-on-one with Gavin, takes him on

and gets over the line. It is just

enough to get in.

Backed his pace,

didn't he, took him on on the

outside, had enough room.

Well, he was turned in the tackle,

and there was just enough room, and

those feet were nowhere near the

touch line in the end. Dan Biggar

keeping his wits about him. 26

phases, and another 20, and the try,

well, had to come.

He's getting ever closer to Dan

Parks's league record. He would add

to it on this occasion. 5-0 to the

Ospreys, 25 minutes gone.

You must

be mightily relieved to have the

score on the Dragons having made it

all ready, 130 tackles.

Incredible.

We are not helping ourselves,

running lines across each other. We

are all doing similar jobs. We want

forwards to be forwards, backs to be

back.

Daniel God this difference in the

corner, he went back on the short

side to the hooker, he was annoyed

with that tactic.

It is not what we

are trying to do in the 22 area. We

wanted to get the forwards working.

We shouldn't be holding our width,

which we do elsewhere.

Although, they have done, so it will

Inexperience from Keelan. Sam Davies

didn't touch the ball outside the

22, and therefore he took it back

in. That ball going out on the full

means the Dragons have a welcome

line-out outside the Ospreys 22.

Lovely kick from Henson, kicking the

top of the ball, so anything can

happen on the end over end. Sam

Davies parries it into the 22.

Keelan could not kick that straight

out. Davies did shout, carried back

in.

Whether Keelan hurt him or not

is another matter. That is the

result. A very useful line-out

position for the Dragons, which

Elliot Dee is making the most of.

Cover defence prevents the

grounding. Dixon, he's very close as

well. Not quite close enough.

James Thomas sets it up. Pretorius

tries to burrow over himself. So, so

and Brown does get over. What a

reply from the Dragons.

There you

go. You have got to take your

chances. For all the possession, all

the defence the Dragons have done in

their own 22, their first entry into

the Ospreys 22, and they score.

selection in the autumn

international squad. A great play,

and look how they want to get the

ball in the hand of their danger men

quickly. Hallam Amos and Ashton

Hewitt. He did well to cover it

And then they were patient. Cory

Hill doesn't go himself, little left

to Lyon Brown. He's a big man. He

powers over. 126 kilograms of him.

birthday yesterday. The first try

for Lyon Brown.

What a try, he is the only man in

the ground that is heavier than

Anthony Joshua!

Gavin Henson puts the ball between

the posts, and incredibly, half an

hour played, the Dragons have had

just over a quarter of the

possession, just over a quarter

territory, and it is the Dragons

that lead 7-5.

Coaches call it the

capital a zone, the red zone or the

Green zone. Whatever you call it,

you had to take your chances. A

fantastic score, Bernard Jackman

will be delighted, not just by that,

but the defensive sets, too. The

familiar hitch kick from Gavin

Henson sales the ball over, and

that's the lead.

Great following by Keelan Giles. The

Dragons just a little bit too

complacent on the restart.

May have had a word to say,

gazillion Matt Ryan, Sam Cross.

Important now that the Ospreys get

some shape. This is better, get the

centres together. Get some sort of

structure. And make the tackle a bit

further out, a one out pass to

stretch the Dragons defence. It is

what they haven't been doing.

run, as you'd expect, from Sam

Beck. Combining well. Here they go

again, deep into Dragons territory.

And they've turned the ball over,

no, it's not. Alun Wyn Jones to

Biggar. Dummied and then found

Keelan Giles, and they've worked it

clear for Sam tarry on the far

touchline. Farb better handling,

clinical from Ospreys and Sam Parry

the recipient.

Great score from the Ospreys. Well

constructive. Alun Wyn is heavily

involved, taking was once a bloody,

as is Dan Biggar. They had to make

the pass, one out, a bit wider, and

they managed to do that on that

occasion. The Dragons defence

looking tired. A little extra pass,

few dummy runs. This all came back

from a far better organised attack.

Just drifts at the last. Ospreys

will be feeling better, having

conceded the lead to regain within a

matter of minutes. Little dummy from

Biggar throwing the defence in,

creating the space on the outside

eventually for Sam Parry.

Yeah,

lovely hold-up from Dan Biggar,

didn't cross anyone. But it all came

from a little incisive run on the

short side from Sam Davies.

was going to say, the one thing the

Dragons will be really disappointed

with was that Keelan Giles is the

one that won the restart, because it

put them straight back under

pressure.

Dragons' favour.

don't think Bernard Jackman will be

happy for that. Looking to shape the

be happy going in with all the

defending they have done. It was a

needless speculative kick.

Davies. They will come back. Rory

Hill at the breakdown was asking for

an explanation. Apparently, he knows

exactly what he was doing.

feel that Alun Wyn will be happy to

get an extra three here to go into

half-time.

I just want to show you the build-up

to the try, Dan Biggar came around

this site, and this is what he

wanted to create, because in, then,

came Sam Davies into this area. You

can see, hear, there is a big gap,

through Sam Davies goes. That is all

you need to get on the front foot,

and get space in the wider channels.

The two conversions have been from

wide out, and unsuccessful. That

one, straight between the posts, and

Dan Biggar adds to his try, and

opens up a 6-point lead with

half-time approaching.

You talk about

derbies, it will be an arm wrestle

in the first half, but they will

for me is key. The Dragons this

season have made 138 tackles game on

average. For them to make that 150

For all the physical

contacts of the big guys up front,

it is something, enterprising play,

and Keelan, it is an unintentional

collision. Cory Allen, lovely flat

pass. Sam Davies on the two versus

one. Lovely skill from Giles with

the kick over the top. They are so

competitive these players, the

50-50, and unfortunately, he has

paid the price.

his experience, he pulled out, put

the brakes on, and drove towards the

one that goes over. You can see it

is well set, but it heads, as the

Dragons take it to the touchline,

McCusker does it extreme the well.

Puts the stops on. Leonard joins in

come round the wrong side of it, and

Well, they will feel

doubly aggrieved, the Dragons, that

they didn't get away from the

dangers. The previous time, with

Lloyd Fairbrother, looking to have

We

Interesting to see how long they

organising themselves to finally get

over the line. Again, they deliver

it, a long time in the line-out. I

sevens, Benjamin! He has had the

line in sevens territory, but with

all the Ospreys chasing him, it is a

different ball game.

since coming on. He has shown a bit

of impetus, taking the ball forward.

Wyn Jones working hard. Baldwin

breaks clear, reaches out stock just

about managed to hold onto it. Good,

low tackle.

It is bodies on the line

from the Dragons, quite literally,

at the moment. James Hook steps.

Can't quite reach out, though. Well,

as it was in the first half,

relentless from the Ospreys. Biggar

runs into Henson, who stands his

ground with the help of Jack Dixon.

There must be gaps out wide in

midfield. Trying to go Route one,

and Ma'afu Fia gets there! That is

the bonus point for the Ospreys.

It

is not pretty, but it is certainly

effective in the end, multiple

phases again, battering away.

Courageous defence by the Dragons,

but experience, the size, the power,

possession, it is too much for the

Dragons Ian. No more than they

deserve for their perseverance close

to the line.
