Once upon a time in Switzerland, there was a little town called

:01:05.:01:16.

Adelboden. The 362 days of the year, it is your typical mountain

:01:17.:01:23.

resort, small, scenic. Switzerland at its neutral best. But for one

:01:24.:01:34.

weekend in January, the World Cup wagon rolls into town. Every hotel

:01:35.:01:44.

and bar in town is packed to the rafters and it all starts here. On

:01:45.:01:49.

Friday night, they hold a party to welcome the racers. Music, drinking

:01:50.:02:02.

and dancing, zip wires. It transforms this place into a hotbed

:02:03.:02:06.

of excitement and pressure. Then it is the big show. The racers battle

:02:07.:02:11.

be mountain, conditions and the clock. It takes true grit to make it

:02:12.:02:19.

down the final pitch here. If you win, it makes you a legend. You will

:02:20.:02:31.

see some of the good, the bad and the ugly. Over the course of the

:02:32.:02:37.

show, some of the finest racing you will ever see. First up is the fifth

:02:38.:02:43.

giant slalom of the season. So far, it is to piste Marcel Hirscher and

:02:44.:02:49.

Ted Ligety. Who will win the next round of this stupendous battle of

:02:50.:02:54.

technical giants? And if you thought Adelboden was off the beaten track,

:02:55.:02:59.

let me introduce you to the man who built his own private ski resort.

:03:00.:03:05.

From serenity to insanity, we catch up with Emily Sarsfield, the leading

:03:06.:03:11.

British contender going into the Winter Olympics in Sochi. This might

:03:12.:03:19.

be a one horse town in the Swiss wild West, but there is a new

:03:20.:03:24.

gunslinger in Adelboden. Marcel Hirscher last season retain his

:03:25.:03:31.

World Cup title. He joined the likes of Stephan Ebeharter and Hemann

:03:32.:03:34.

Maier as multiple Austrian winners. He is on the form of his life. We

:03:35.:03:39.

went to catch up with arguably the best skier on the planet right now.

:03:40.:03:47.

In German, it means stag, his surname. For Austrian ski fans, it

:03:48.:03:52.

means success. The reigning overall World Cup champion has been used to

:03:53.:04:02.

people chanting his name. I had the pressure all the time on my

:04:03.:04:06.

shoulders. Already with five to six years old. I grew up, the cloud is

:04:07.:04:13.

getting bigger -- the crowd. I get older and older. I have a lot of

:04:14.:04:21.

experience. For me it is pretty normal to have a lot of pressure on

:04:22.:04:25.

my shoulders. If I have a goal I want to reach the goal. I stay

:04:26.:04:28.

pretty focused all of the time. Maybe I am more a racehorse than a

:04:29.:04:36.

training course. Of the piste, I am pretty quiet. Would you say the are

:04:37.:04:41.

-- you are the most famous sportsman in Austria right now? I don't know.

:04:42.:04:47.

Do you know? I am not Austrian but it has got to be between you and

:04:48.:04:54.

some of the ski jumpers. The athletes right now who are

:04:55.:04:58.

competing, I am definitely from one to three. It is hard and Austria to

:04:59.:05:07.

get the most famous athlete because we have many famous retired skiers.

:05:08.:05:14.

We will see how many victories I can collect in the next years. The

:05:15.:05:18.

records in Austria are pretty high. This course in Adelboden is quite

:05:19.:05:23.

challenging, isn't it? It is definitely a very special place to

:05:24.:05:28.

be. It is really brilliant. You ski over the pitch in the steep part.

:05:29.:05:35.

All of the people are chairing. -- cheering. What makes him so good?

:05:36.:05:43.

I first watched Marcel Hirscher ski when he was 14 and he was creating

:05:44.:05:47.

incredible angles with his lower legs. World Cup ski racers were not

:05:48.:05:52.

doing it at that time. Now he has taken the geometry and he has got

:05:53.:05:57.

the power to deal with it as he has grown. If he has that talented, why

:05:58.:06:02.

isn't he beating Ted Ligety? Ted Ligety tends to use his hip much

:06:03.:06:08.

more. When the courses are longer set, big sisters is between the

:06:09.:06:16.

gates, Ted Ligety will beat him. Who else is coming through? The

:06:17.:06:22.

gates, Ted Ligety will beat him. Who will pack the top ten led by Alexis

:06:23.:06:25.

Pinturault. A couple of Germans did so well in Val d'Isere. Last but

:06:26.:06:32.

maybe least, what about the Swiss? Unless we see a miracle, I cannot

:06:33.:06:36.

maybe least, what about the Swiss? see them being on the podium on home

:06:37.:06:43.

snow. The sun is blazing down and it is

:06:44.:06:46.

warming up this course. The fans are out in force and the atmosphere is

:06:47.:06:51.

heating up. This is the Adelboden giant slalom. Matt Chilton has the

:06:52.:06:53.

commentary. It is a beautiful springlike day. A

:06:54.:07:04.

relaxed at the Ted Ligety. Marcel Hirscher flexes his muscles at the

:07:05.:07:15.

top of the course. Thomas Fanara first to go in Adelboden. On a day

:07:16.:07:19.

like today when the snow is so soft, that could be a serious advantage

:07:20.:07:23.

because this track despite the work they have done on it, injecting the

:07:24.:07:27.

water with the help of the Swiss military, and applying the various

:07:28.:07:31.

chemicals, it will cut up quite quickly. Thomas Fanara is in full

:07:32.:07:36.

attack mode here. Comes onto the flat, bright sunshine. What a

:07:37.:07:45.

beautiful morning it is. Thomas without any mistakes so far. Second

:07:46.:07:50.

in Val d'Isere. A really good start to the season. The French team have

:07:51.:07:56.

so much talent within the giant slalom set up. A lot of competition

:07:57.:08:00.

for Olympic places for the French team when it comes to selection.

:08:01.:08:06.

That is midway through January. Thomas Fanara with a clean course,

:08:07.:08:09.

making the most of it. The toughest part of the track is still to come.

:08:10.:08:15.

This legendary final pitch, it sends them down the steep mountainside

:08:16.:08:20.

towards the finish. This cauldron of an atmosphere. Thousands of mainly

:08:21.:08:27.

Swiss fans waving their flags. There are a few French here too and they

:08:28.:08:33.

will be happy with what they have seen from Thomas Fanara. It looked a

:08:34.:08:38.

bit scrappy, particularly coming down the finished pitch. You could

:08:39.:08:41.

see his outside ski being pulled away. But there are deep cuts

:08:42.:08:47.

already because it is very warm here in Adelboden. As it warms up, the

:08:48.:08:52.

course will chop up. I think by that reckoning, number one would have

:08:53.:08:55.

been the best number to start. Could it be Ted Ligety's crown is

:08:56.:08:59.

slipping? The one to mince an American has hit

:09:00.:09:05.

a sticky. Crashing out for the first time in Val d'Isere -- the once

:09:06.:09:11.

invincible American. He will look for inspiration from memories of

:09:12.:09:14.

last season's win here. Ted Ligety ready to go.

:09:15.:09:20.

Two giant slalom races this season. Ted Ligety has had two, Marcel

:09:21.:09:26.

Hirscher has two. They have shared the honours so far. It has not been

:09:27.:09:31.

his best season. Ted Ligety have had a couple of failures to finish. One

:09:32.:09:36.

or two crashes as well. Chasing the time of Thomas Fanara, 19.43. Thomas

:09:37.:09:43.

validity getting outside of the ideal racing line. Lost his way

:09:44.:09:48.

slightly there -- Thomas validity getting outside. The red line across

:09:49.:09:56.

the course shows you the intermediaries point. He is

:09:57.:10:02.

trailing. Lots of noise. They like to watch Ted Ligety race. All of

:10:03.:10:08.

these Swiss supporters are big fans of Ted Ligety and of course Bode

:10:09.:10:13.

Miller. They have not got too many of their own racers today. They will

:10:14.:10:20.

look to support other nations. Ted Ligety heading in the wrong

:10:21.:10:23.

direction behind Thomas Fanara. Onto the final pitch. Got his body almost

:10:24.:10:29.

horizontal on the snow. He will be happy to be starting early. The snow

:10:30.:10:35.

is ridiculously soft underfoot. Ted Ligety has done OK. Second position.

:10:36.:10:47.

But Ron did not look like that macro that run did not look like he was

:10:48.:10:51.

getting the same pressure -- that run did not look like he was getting

:10:52.:10:55.

the same pressure. He was forcing it to much. He has not got the timing,

:10:56.:10:59.

not the same smooth skiing as last season.

:11:00.:11:09.

Marcel Hirscher in the start gate. He wears the red bib. He loves it

:11:10.:11:19.

here. He has won here in -- a number of times. He is hoping to beat the

:11:20.:11:27.

record of five World Cup wins in Adelboden. Marcel Hirscher starting

:11:28.:11:35.

with bib number four and already the courses cutting up quite

:11:36.:11:42.

dramatically. Big ruts forming. It will be really tough for the later

:11:43.:11:53.

starters. Marcel Hirscher the first man to do the giant slalom double

:11:54.:11:58.

here in Adelboden a couple of years ago. He really does like this

:11:59.:12:03.

course. Benjamin Raich, another one who had multiple wins in Adelboden.

:12:04.:12:08.

He is also in the start list today. Marcel Hirscher finds himself 0.75

:12:09.:12:15.

off the pace. The big steep face to finish his first run. Lots of

:12:16.:12:18.

Austrian supporters here. Their support is being drowned out by the

:12:19.:12:24.

thousands of Swiss. Marcel Hirscher has had a good run but not enough to

:12:25.:12:32.

beat Thomas Fanara. That run is starting to look very

:12:33.:12:37.

good, the run from Thomas Fanara. Marcel Hirscher attacking too much a

:12:38.:12:41.

couple of times. Had to have a couple of heavy sets to get back on

:12:42.:12:47.

track. Close to Ted Ligety. Thomas Fanara's time is looking good.

:12:48.:12:52.

Benefiting from going number one. Alexis Pinturault's parents only

:12:53.:13:01.

hotel and he grew up with the snow on his doorstep. The French have a

:13:02.:13:05.

strong team but he need not worry about switching nationalities to get

:13:06.:13:10.

a start spot. He is the leader of the French pack.

:13:11.:13:15.

He might just have had enough time to talk or at least listen to it

:13:16.:13:21.

Thomas Fanara via the two-way radios. Thomas Fanara has been at

:13:22.:13:27.

the bottom of the course for a little while now. I wonder how much

:13:28.:13:31.

information the leader will give to one of the later starters. They may

:13:32.:13:37.

beat compatriots but team-mates can be used loosely in such a situation

:13:38.:13:46.

because it is an individual sport. Nothing wrong with these first few

:13:47.:13:54.

turns. He had quite a heavy landing. He did not seem to lose too much

:13:55.:13:58.

speed. The hard work is coming his way shortly.

:13:59.:14:10.

He is keeping in touch with Fanara. The approaches the finish. It bares

:14:11.:14:28.

its teeth here. He might leave himself a lot to do going into the

:14:29.:14:31.

second run. He takes second position. Friends first and second.

:14:32.:14:39.

It is looking good for the French fans, I was talking to Thomas

:14:40.:14:44.

Fanara, he said his fan club left France at 4am. There is a big group

:14:45.:14:50.

of them based up there, by the big screen. France are in first and

:14:51.:14:55.

second, they will be happy for the second run.

:14:56.:14:58.

For the Germans, results were mixed. Sixth place and 10th place. Five

:14:59.:15:11.

Italians made the top 30. The best place was in fifth place. The top

:15:12.:15:18.

Swiss racer was in 26th position. Miller had a bad day. A narrow

:15:19.:15:24.

collision here, --. Is it the way the French have set up

:15:25.:15:36.

their skis? It is where they have been to train, they have found

:15:37.:15:39.

somewhere that replicates this soft snow that we have here. Are they too

:15:40.:15:45.

far ahead for Ted Ligety to reel in? The big names have got a chance

:15:46.:15:52.

to catch the man in second place, but two, he is an awful way ahead.

:15:53.:15:56.

But he has never been at the top of a World Cup podium, he will never

:15:57.:16:01.

have a better chance. The pressure will be huge. The ship of glory will

:16:02.:16:08.

be about to sail, will Thomas Fanara be on it?

:16:09.:16:16.

An impressive season to date for the Norwegian, improving results. He was

:16:17.:16:27.

14th in the first run, he has a decent lead here. This bottom part

:16:28.:16:34.

of the course on a fresh pattern of gates that has been set for the

:16:35.:16:39.

second run. It is quite inviting. It allows the racers to move into full

:16:40.:16:52.

attack mode. Plenty of speed. He is ahead of the Italian. He tries to

:16:53.:16:59.

accelerate the skis through these terms. This is nice work. He has had

:17:00.:17:05.

the green light on all the way, and he takes first race in Adelboden. An

:17:06.:17:09.

excellent run. A great run, really exciting to

:17:10.:17:18.

watch, great angles, he does ski a very clean line. He picked up a lot

:17:19.:17:24.

of time in the middle part of the course over those rollers. Sucking

:17:25.:17:29.

them up with his legs and keeping the ski in contact with the snow,

:17:30.:17:32.

accelerating out of each turn. The German was seventh after the

:17:33.:17:48.

first run. Laying down some fast terms in the early stages. His

:17:49.:17:52.

advantage over the Norwegian is substantial. He is getting quicker.

:17:53.:18:07.

No German has ever won here. The last German to win a World Cup giant

:18:08.:18:17.

slalom was back in 1973. This skier has never won a World Cup giant

:18:18.:18:22.

slalom. He has been one of the best slalom skiers of the last three or

:18:23.:18:26.

four years, but his form here has really started to move on a notch

:18:27.:18:29.

this season. This looks really promising. Really fast, aggressive,

:18:30.:18:38.

easy, relaxed terms. He has flown through the top part of the course.

:18:39.:18:47.

Now, he hits the state it. He recovered his racing line. He picks

:18:48.:18:50.

it up again. He is light on his edges. He takes it away. A massive

:18:51.:18:56.

margin. Brilliant. Beautiful skiing, really smooth and

:18:57.:19:07.

relaxed. That is the best I have ever seen him in giant slalom. He

:19:08.:19:14.

dealt -- he beat Marcel Hirscher in slalom a week ago, and he has thrown

:19:15.:19:16.

down the gauntlet. The Italian was fifth after the

:19:17.:19:32.

first run. The lead is not a lot. Deteriorating conditions, it is dark

:19:33.:19:38.

appear now. The sunshine will aid visibility. He is trying to feel his

:19:39.:19:45.

way over the lumps and bumps. You can see how warm it has been, with

:19:46.:19:50.

the green fields on the opposite side of the valley. He is now

:19:51.:20:00.

behind, not a good top section. He finds himself on the flats, this is

:20:01.:20:04.

where he should be sharper. But again, he looks slightly

:20:05.:20:07.

conservative. He takes the role nicely. He absorbs

:20:08.:20:22.

it, and dissipates it, and sets up for the big finish in Adelboden. But

:20:23.:20:31.

I think his chance has slipped away. He just had to lean his body through

:20:32.:20:36.

and make sure of the turn. The damage was already done. The German

:20:37.:20:44.

maintains his lead. The Italian his third, quite a gap between first and

:20:45.:20:54.

third. Marcel Hirscher, in fourth place after the first run. The World

:20:55.:20:58.

Cup leader in giant slalom this season. He is off on a charge. Not

:20:59.:21:12.

the cleanest top section I have ever seen from him, but he is starting to

:21:13.:21:17.

go to work now, getting his polls wrapped around his body for a split

:21:18.:21:23.

second. He is attempting to get more aerodynamic, to pick up a fraction

:21:24.:21:29.

more speed. Most of his advantage has been wiped out. He comes into

:21:30.:21:37.

the sunny side of the course. Still clinging on. Emergency terms. There

:21:38.:21:45.

is no one better at recovering a racing line following a mistake. He

:21:46.:21:50.

can make huge mistakes and still go on and win races. But I think it

:21:51.:21:55.

might have been an error to far today for him. He is slower than the

:21:56.:22:04.

German. For the first time in the second run. The impossibly steep run

:22:05.:22:12.

into the line. He is hanging on for every turn. Trying to generate an

:22:13.:22:17.

extra bit of speed. It is not enough. He is in second place, the

:22:18.:22:20.

German holds onto first base. A fantastic display of aggressive

:22:21.:22:29.

skiing, but it was almost too aggressive. The German was smooth

:22:30.:22:35.

and relaxed, like a cat, but Marcel Hirscher was like a bowl in a china

:22:36.:22:44.

shop, lots of tiny mistakes. Even skiing the finish cleanly, it was

:22:45.:22:45.

not enough. Ted Ligety, the world giant slalom

:22:46.:22:55.

champion. On his way for the second time of asking today in Adelboden.

:22:56.:23:00.

In third place after the first run. The best giant slalom skier of the

:23:01.:23:06.

last four or five seasons. He gets beautiful angles, he is always a joy

:23:07.:23:12.

to watch, and he is attacking the second run. His lead is still

:23:13.:23:19.

intact. He is in trouble, he has lost a ski! His race is done. It

:23:20.:23:26.

looks like he is OK. He hugged a tip inside the control gate.

:23:27.:23:30.

He can count himself lucky he walked away from that without any injury.

:23:31.:23:37.

Hooking a giant slalom gate can be quite dangerous. He is lucky the

:23:38.:23:43.

binding just popped off, but his season is taking a downward spiral.

:23:44.:23:47.

The Frenchman with a big lead over the German. He was still pushing

:23:48.:23:56.

with his polls as he reached the third gate. A sign that he is really

:23:57.:24:04.

up for the second run. He is doing really well, but he still has a lot

:24:05.:24:09.

to learn. He admits he is not the finished article just yet. There are

:24:10.:24:13.

one or two points of this course that he has to get right. The role

:24:14.:24:19.

has been handled well by some. Less well by others. Ted Ligety did not

:24:20.:24:28.

get that far. Up and over. He has lost his lead. A little late there.

:24:29.:24:38.

Down into the darkness. The sunny finish belies the ferocious mess of

:24:39.:24:44.

this run into the line. It is terrifyingly speak. The deficit has

:24:45.:24:55.

grown. He is in trouble. He leaned into the gate to make it count, but

:24:56.:25:03.

his skiing has deteriorated, he has lost his composure, he is late on

:25:04.:25:07.

every turn, and no danger to the German, who holds on.

:25:08.:25:13.

He did not look incredibly balanced as he went at the start. The first

:25:14.:25:20.

section is where the German was incredibly fast. The other mistake

:25:21.:25:24.

that he made, coming onto the finished pitch, the big

:25:25.:25:28.

right-hander, he had to set the tone twice, because he did not get the

:25:29.:25:32.

direction quite right. This will put the pressure on his team-mate, temp

:25:33.:25:35.

Acra, now, the last one due to ski. Thomas Fanara, skiing for his first

:25:36.:25:48.

ever World Cup win. The last man on the mountain in Adelboden. The

:25:49.:25:52.

likeable Frenchman. His lead over the German is significant. Almost

:25:53.:26:00.

1.5 seconds. Can he hold his composure, hold his nerve and make

:26:01.:26:08.

it count? A positive start, but a lack of balance. He was shaky. The

:26:09.:26:17.

lead has reduced. It might be even less by the time he stopped the

:26:18.:26:25.

clock again. He still has enough in reserve to steal the lead away. But

:26:26.:26:31.

he cannot afford any mistakes. It was on the bottom third that the

:26:32.:26:37.

German was at his brilliant best. This is at times a little scruffy by

:26:38.:26:48.

Thomas Fanara. He is clinging on. It has to be fast here. He looks a

:26:49.:26:57.

little tense and tight. The terms are late, I do not think it will

:26:58.:27:01.

happen for him. I think it will be the German's victory. It is. The

:27:02.:27:06.

German wins his first World Cup giant slalom, he becomes the first

:27:07.:27:09.

German man ever to win here. When he set off, I thought he was

:27:10.:27:20.

going to do it, he looked so relaxed on the top part of the course,

:27:21.:27:24.

soaking up the bumps, and the first mistake came over the little

:27:25.:27:31.

rollers. He got pushed later, wide in the line. He still had a chance,

:27:32.:27:35.

but as he went on to the finished pitch, the second of the

:27:36.:27:38.

right-handers, his shoulders twisted out, the skis skidded, and we knew

:27:39.:27:42.

he was not going to beat the German. The German becomes the first German

:27:43.:27:52.

winner of a World Cup giant slalom since the early 70s. Second place

:27:53.:27:57.

again for Thomas Fanara. Marcel Hirscher on the podium.

:27:58.:28:05.

First giant slalom victory for Germany in 40 years. It is crazy.

:28:06.:28:18.

Unbelievable. Today is a historic day. Maybe I relied it a bit later,

:28:19.:28:22.

but until right now, my feeling is really good. -- maybe I realised.

:28:23.:28:31.

How did Felix Neureuther make up so much ground? He loves it when it is

:28:32.:28:41.

bumpy. Why did Ted Ligety not do so well? Ted Ligety likes it when it is

:28:42.:28:47.

hard so he can get the hip in and generate the big angles. You called

:28:48.:28:51.

it and said Thomas Fanara would crack under pressure. When he

:28:52.:28:56.

started, I thought he would do it. He was relaxed but then made a

:28:57.:29:00.

couple of mistakes. He ran out and the lead went away. Disappointment

:29:01.:29:08.

for Thomas Fanara. That was the news from Adelboden. This is what is

:29:09.:29:13.

going on in the rest of the world of sport. Lindsey Vonn return to action

:29:14.:29:19.

after ten months out, but after failing to finish at Val d'Isere,

:29:20.:29:23.

she announced she would not be competing in Russia. Trouble too for

:29:24.:29:27.

Tommy Morgenstern, the three-time Olympic gold medallist suffered

:29:28.:29:34.

severe injuries after a training crash. He will remain in intensive

:29:35.:29:40.

care that 72 hours. Sochi preparations are much smoother fur

:29:41.:29:49.

Lizzie Yarnold. Along with Shelley Rudman, she was in action on Friday

:29:50.:29:56.

at the latest World Cup event in St Moritz. If you want to know how they

:29:57.:30:00.

get on, press the red button in about half an hour from now.

:30:01.:30:06.

Here on Ski Sunday, we pride ourselves on bringing you some

:30:07.:30:17.

unusual stories. Mike Basich in the pursuit of his dream, moved hundreds

:30:18.:30:24.

of tonnes of rock by hand. That is pathetic. Mike's efforts are

:30:25.:30:33.

anything but. And there it is. Look at the track.

:30:34.:30:42.

How are you going? Good. We will head up the road here and see what's

:30:43.:30:52.

know we have got to deal with. We might need the snowmobile. OK. A

:30:53.:31:01.

little bit of a journey. I am excited.

:31:02.:31:13.

This is it. Pretty wicked view. I am pretty speechless. I expect going --

:31:14.:31:24.

I was expecting it to be good, but this is as close to Alpine paradise

:31:25.:31:29.

as you can get. Where would the snow pack be in winter? On an average

:31:30.:31:38.

winter, about this high, 15 feet, 20 foot, five metres, six metres. Two

:31:39.:31:43.

years ago, the whole house was buried. Completely buried. It was a

:31:44.:31:48.

really bizarre experience. I came back from eight trip and I walked up

:31:49.:31:56.

the hill and the house was gone. It was amazing. You never know what

:31:57.:32:04.

will happen up here. You have got to be ready for whatever. Snowboarding

:32:05.:32:10.

is his passion and after turning his back on competitive riding, he

:32:11.:32:12.

headed with the back country with a sled and eight truck. He bought 40

:32:13.:32:21.

acres of land and built this cabin. I started snowboarding when I was

:32:22.:32:28.

13. You went to the resort and you would not see a snowboarder. If he

:32:29.:32:31.

did, you would go and talk to them and see what kind of bored they were

:32:32.:32:35.

wrong. Keyboards we started on wormwood, it was exciting. -- they

:32:36.:32:43.

wormwood. I did not fit in with the football all basket team. This was

:32:44.:32:49.

perfect. It stuck out. Would you class yourself as the stereotypical

:32:50.:32:58.

snowboard rat? I was the youngest in that group. It was a pretty fun

:32:59.:33:02.

group. We were, you could say, loud. Not welcome most places. Over

:33:03.:33:10.

time, it became, this is not going to go away. Certified to go on this

:33:11.:33:16.

list. The biggest problem is the visual, how everyone looked.

:33:17.:33:21.

Everyone was so used to be certain tradition that skiing has always

:33:22.:33:26.

had. There was not a lot of room for something different. Shaved heads,

:33:27.:33:45.

died her. -- dyed hair. Wow. Warm in here. It must have been

:33:46.:33:58.

incredible watching that much power. It is pretty fun. I cannot

:33:59.:34:08.

get my head around it. The dream scenario. I have learnt a lot about

:34:09.:34:15.

what I need to live. I have lived in a big house, I have lived in my car

:34:16.:34:22.

for a couple of years. I spend most of my time outside in the daytime.

:34:23.:34:29.

This is what I think I need. It is one of the best picture frames you

:34:30.:34:35.

could ever built. For me, it is. It is what I dream dog as a kid. At the

:34:36.:34:40.

same time, what this place has given me, I am trying to work with that --

:34:41.:34:47.

it is what I dreamt of as a kid. I started competing when I was 15 and

:34:48.:34:55.

I quit competing around 2000. On the international circuit, how many

:34:56.:34:59.

competitions did you do? More than my body can handle. Some of the

:35:00.:35:02.

biggest years, I went to Europe 15 times, Japan, four, five times. All

:35:03.:35:11.

in 12 months. Nonstop. Was it a case of burn-out at the end

:35:12.:35:16.

of it? Getting away from competition came from realising the sport was

:35:17.:35:20.

getting more and more structure and realising why I got into this and

:35:21.:35:26.

kept it in my life, what it was for, the creativity of it. I really

:35:27.:35:34.

think that in a weird way I snowboard, not exactly for the

:35:35.:35:38.

sport, but I snowboard for what it brings around it. The environment?

:35:39.:35:45.

Yeah, the ability to get creative and do something that has not been

:35:46.:35:50.

done before. Competition took a lot of that away from me. As it got

:35:51.:35:58.

bigger and bigger. Mike was at the forefront of self shooting

:35:59.:36:01.

technology and heap pioneered ways to shoot without a crew, in the

:36:02.:36:06.

process pushing the boundaries of what could be done with a camera. No

:36:07.:36:12.

photographer would let me jump with a $4000 camera. The money part of

:36:13.:36:20.

life, for me, is there a -- if there is going to do, the money part will

:36:21.:36:24.

figure itself out. I spent thousands of dollars on the setup. I spent

:36:25.:36:33.

money to fire the camera and figure out how to make things work. I did a

:36:34.:36:40.

lot of welding to mount the tripod and the camera. It was a space that

:36:41.:36:43.

no one was willing to jump road gaps with a camera... I have destroyed

:36:44.:36:49.

cameras. It took a few years for people to realise that it was a

:36:50.:36:55.

legitimate thing. It was not a gimmick. Yeah. Some of my photos

:36:56.:37:00.

were little odd. The helicopter drop thing I did was not exactly welcome

:37:01.:37:09.

as snowboarding, it was viewed as a publicity stunt. A lot of that

:37:10.:37:16.

changed my way of speaking about it. All the work I started doing was

:37:17.:37:26.

very personal. I feel what I'm doing now is the first day -- is what I

:37:27.:37:32.

did the first day I started snowboarding. It has not been easy.

:37:33.:37:40.

It has been huge struggle. Not having sponsors. I was fine with

:37:41.:37:44.

that because I was willing to let it go. Ice -- I suppose it was about

:37:45.:37:54.

being true to you. I try to stay on my true path. Not being influenced

:37:55.:37:58.

by what the world thinks I'm supposed to do. This is my version

:37:59.:38:12.

of a lift. I thought the house was good! What did you buy customer did

:38:13.:38:19.

you buy these frames? -- what did you buy? Anything red is

:38:20.:38:28.

custom-made. The gearbox and the wheels, the towers, that came with

:38:29.:38:33.

it and the chair I am holding. Some things I have built. Even the

:38:34.:38:40.

gripping of the cable is something I built because I am using a different

:38:41.:38:45.

type of cable. That was some of the stuff I got her engineer myself. It

:38:46.:38:54.

is a one seat. There it is. Off we go. The first time I rode it was so

:38:55.:39:00.

tense. Amazing. Riding a chairlift in my

:39:01.:39:07.

backyard. But no resort is complete without

:39:08.:39:33.

this. This is the crowning touch, isn't

:39:34.:39:49.

it? This is my favourite toy. Once I got this, my whole life changed.

:39:50.:39:56.

Never touched a shovel since. You obviously need a certain amount of

:39:57.:40:00.

snow to use it. It must have changed the way you view the hill.

:40:01.:40:09.

Everything else was with a snowmobile. I can build a welder

:40:10.:40:13.

Rupp with this. If I have something to fix. I can cut a road with this.

:40:14.:40:20.

It is one of the most spectacular playgrounds I have ever seen.

:40:21.:40:27.

Thanks. Thank you for having us. One of the most inspiring and

:40:28.:40:32.

determined people I have ever met. Now it is time to take a look at our

:40:33.:40:42.

free style skiers. Also looking to impress is a 30-year-old from Durham

:40:43.:40:47.

who likes to live life in the fast lane.

:40:48.:40:54.

Emily Sarsfield, British ski cross. Ski cross is the ultimate downhill

:40:55.:41:04.

race. You have got the Alpine aspect cos you have got the downhill

:41:05.:41:09.

racing. Then you have the freestyle aspect because of the jumps. You are

:41:10.:41:14.

racing head-to-head so everyone can see who will win the race. They

:41:15.:41:17.

start at the top together and the first one to cross the finish

:41:18.:41:24.

line... It is so exciting. It is a scary event. I am not going to live.

:41:25.:41:28.

I stand at the top of the course and I am scared to go down. Jumping 30

:41:29.:41:35.

metres, 40 metres. Added into the mix, you have got someone trying to

:41:36.:41:39.

knock you out of the way! The Sochi course, when we did the test event

:41:40.:41:44.

last year, it was a great course. I loved it. It has got some huge

:41:45.:41:49.

jumps. The big thing is that you know you have got to be calm to keep

:41:50.:41:53.

yourself in the safest position. If you go down hard, you really do help

:41:54.:41:58.

yourself -- hurt yourself. Getting to Sochi is the ultimate thing. That

:41:59.:42:08.

means so much to me. Best of luck to Emily and the rest of Team GB as

:42:09.:42:11.

they make their final preparations for the Winter Games. The first

:42:12.:42:16.

programme from Sochi comes to you on the 7th of February. The BBC will

:42:17.:42:20.

have over 200 hours of coverage across the games on all of your

:42:21.:42:26.

devices. I am the dreadful menace, the one whose will is done, the

:42:27.:42:33.

haunting chill upon your neck, I am the conundrum. But now you stand

:42:34.:42:41.

before me, to void of all this may. -- to avoid. Could it be just maybe

:42:42.:42:55.

I will let you have your day? As you can see -- you can see the full

:42:56.:42:59.

trailer before Sherlock on BBC One tonight. I am officially excited.

:43:00.:43:06.

Peaking just in time for the Olympics is Felix Neureuther.

:43:07.:43:11.

Congratulations to him for his first ever win in Adelboden today. Plenty

:43:12.:43:21.

more action on Ski Sunday extra. You can watch the full coverage of

:43:22.:43:26.

the women's downhill on the iPlayer. It is a cracker. And you can watch

:43:27.:43:33.

the men's slalom on midday on all platforms. Then the main course, Ski

:43:34.:43:39.

Sunday next week from Wengen. The Lauberhorn is the most physically

:43:40.:43:46.

demanding there is. Are they going to stand up to another two and a

:43:47.:43:50.

half minutes of punishment? It would be more like three minutes for me

:43:51.:43:54.

with a camera and I do not really know.

:43:55.:43:58.

Tune in next week to find out. Really rough and bumpy. Can't really

:43:59.:44:06.

see anything at all. It is just like a vertical skating rink. My legs are

:44:07.:44:09.

really starting to burn. Hard on the left ski. And across the line! That

:44:10.:44:13.

is quite a rush.
