Hello, and welcome to the programme, we are in St Moritz, where the

:00:53.:01:00.

Alpine skiing World Championships reaches its conclusion with the

:01:01.:01:04.

men's slalom. For the first time in a long time, we have a British skier

:01:05.:01:11.

with medal contention. Being a British ski racer feels like you are

:01:12.:01:16.

an out-of-town and you have walked into someone's local! The Swiss, the

:01:17.:01:21.

Austrians, the French, they look at you funny, you are a novelty to

:01:22.:01:28.

them. I've heard it before, so many times... " how can you be a ski

:01:29.:01:37.

racer on Alpine mountain is without any mountains in your country?"

:01:38.:01:43.

It breeds resilience, fight or flight! If you don't believe in

:01:44.:01:46.

yourself, no one else will! And there's nothing more satisfying

:01:47.:02:03.

than proving everyone wrong! COMMENTATOR: The day it all came

:02:04.:02:17.

right for Great Britain! COMMENTATOR: Alan Baxter wins the

:02:18.:02:19.

Olympic slalom bronze medal! COMMENTATOR: My goodness me, have we

:02:20.:02:27.

ever seen anything like that! It's no longer a novelty, Dave

:02:28.:02:37.

Ryding has earned the right to be taken seriously, and it will be no

:02:38.:02:42.

surprise to anyone if he places on the podium today. Of course, it's

:02:43.:02:52.

not just the British interest to look forward to, the two

:02:53.:02:57.

heavyweights of slalom, are set to do battle again, and it promises to

:02:58.:03:02.

be a stunning race between Henrik Kristoffersen and Marcel Hirscher.

:03:03.:03:05.

We will have a full round-up, and Jenny Jones has been meeting a young

:03:06.:03:09.

man doing his bit to prove that skiing and snowboarding is for

:03:10.:03:14.

everyone. No matter who you are or where you're from. I didn't know who

:03:15.:03:17.

I was, I was following the crowd, I wanted to find out who I was, I

:03:18.:03:21.

didn't know who I was, until I started skiing, I didn't have a

:03:22.:03:26.

clue. First, the men's slalom from the championship, we have been

:03:27.:03:28.

talking about Dave Ryding for a while but if we are honest, his

:03:29.:03:32.

progression has been even quicker than we expected. As he taken the

:03:33.:03:37.

European establishment by surprise? Graham went to take a closer look.

:03:38.:03:48.

-- has he taken. When Dave Ryding took his wealth World Cup podium,

:03:49.:03:50.

just a few weeks ago, the world of Alpine skiing took notice. It was

:03:51.:03:57.

not really a surprise, during the season he did very well. It was a

:03:58.:04:03.

surprise in your country rather than outside, he has the abilities.

:04:04.:04:11.

Austrian second, Dave Ryding, third, Russia, fourth, nobly would have

:04:12.:04:14.

thought that you could have a British guy and a Russian on the

:04:15.:04:20.

podium. But for me, it was very important for skiing. A change in

:04:21.:04:24.

Alpine skiing, not only big teams succeed also small team succeed with

:04:25.:04:31.

stop one-man team, one woman teams. The champion of the world. Dave

:04:32.:04:36.

Ryding's technique has caught the eye of Olympic gold medallist

:04:37.:04:39.

Bernard rootsy, he has been talking him up on Swiss television. Watch

:04:40.:04:48.

this guy, incredible how he skis, nobly else is so clean from the

:04:49.:04:52.

beginning until the end, without any mistakes, without any problems. He

:04:53.:04:57.

knows that by skiing down clean like he did so many times, he will be

:04:58.:05:06.

third. There is two who can go faster. If something happens, from

:05:07.:05:13.

Henrik Kristoffersen, from Marcel Hirscher, if they have problems,

:05:14.:05:16.

then he could be the world champion and he would be the greatest, in my

:05:17.:05:20.

opinion. I have come to the top of the mountain, to meet a man who

:05:21.:05:32.

knows a thing or two about slalom. COMMENTATOR: Gold medallist, Ingemar

:05:33.:05:40.

Stenmark of Sweden. I like his technique, I think that he can go

:05:41.:05:44.

even faster. He's never on the edge. He grew up racing on a dry slope,

:05:45.:05:48.

you came to the British artificial Championships. I was in Gloucester,

:05:49.:05:54.

but I did not race, I was scared of falling on the plastic! LAUGHTER

:05:55.:06:01.

What can we expect from Dave Ryding in the Olympics next year? I don't

:06:02.:06:05.

want to put too much pressure on him, but he can win... But, slalom

:06:06.:06:10.

is... It is difficult. There are many skiers who can win. A small

:06:11.:06:17.

mistake and then you are out. And this man knows what it is like to

:06:18.:06:21.

stand on top of the limping podium, Dave Ryding's recent form, along

:06:22.:06:25.

with his unconventional route to success, has earned the respect of

:06:26.:06:31.

the Swede. I have never tried a dry slope, that makes it even more

:06:32.:06:36.

impressive. He is going to be a dangerous contender for Olympic gold

:06:37.:06:41.

medal, so, staging. -- and the respect of the Norwegian. Consistent

:06:42.:06:45.

improvement over the last couple of years has shown that he is working

:06:46.:06:50.

hard, use very talented. All about progression, he won the Europa cup

:06:51.:06:53.

title four years ago, then the World Cup, scored a top 30, then top 15s,

:06:54.:06:59.

this season, he has blazed on the podium, if that continues, he is a

:07:00.:07:04.

definite medal prospect for a year's time. Back to today's racing, not

:07:05.:07:10.

just about day, a couple of other favourites. Henrik Kristoffersen and

:07:11.:07:13.

Marcel Hirscher, although anything can happen in slalom, Kristofferson

:07:14.:07:17.

crashed out in Kitzbuhel, where David had his great result, and

:07:18.:07:21.

Marcel Hirscher feels a lot of pressure in the World Championships.

:07:22.:07:26.

Alexander Rossi Roth could be one to watch out for. The Swiss have

:07:27.:07:31.

someone to cheer for, and it is an interesting background. Daniel

:07:32.:07:35.

Yuill, raced in the British Championships, Scottish parents. Can

:07:36.:07:39.

we claim in as one of our own? He signed for Switzerland, I don't know

:07:40.:07:43.

why, maybe something to do with... Hundreds of coaches, videos, the

:07:44.:07:48.

cars, the sponsors, the cheese...? The cheese alone would have done it

:07:49.:07:53.

for me! -- physios. The battle for the World Championships is about to

:07:54.:07:57.

begin, Matt has the best of the action from round one. On a course

:07:58.:08:01.

set by the Norwegian coach, everything looked set for Henrik

:08:02.:08:04.

Kristoffersen to lay down an early marker in round one. Skiing from bid

:08:05.:08:09.

three, he took the lead, but any convincing one, which did not last

:08:10.:08:14.

for long. Britain's Dave Ryding followed the Norwegian down and lay

:08:15.:08:18.

down a blistering run. -- but it was an unconvincing one. He took first

:08:19.:08:23.

position. Dave Ryding was justifiably satisfied with his

:08:24.:08:26.

morning 's work but the race lead would change hands again before

:08:27.:08:30.

long, slalom buzz number one this year, Marcel Hirscher, skiing in

:08:31.:08:34.

immaculate run, taking the lead by over half a second, followed into

:08:35.:08:37.

second and third by his Austrian team-mate, Marco Schwarz, and

:08:38.:08:43.

Michael Matt. Slalom Prodigy Manuel Feller was in seventh, Austrians are

:08:44.:08:48.

in a dominant position ahead of the second run. Matias Hagens skiing

:08:49.:08:54.

well, to take fifth place, and Russia's Alexander Khoroshilov is in

:08:55.:08:58.

charge of the top three, but is eight, going into round two. Lower

:08:59.:09:02.

down the field, the Swiss number one Daniel Yuill went 11, beaten by his

:09:03.:09:06.

team-mate, who finished ninth. Germany are without a medal from

:09:07.:09:10.

these championships, that run does not look set to end, with Felix

:09:11.:09:16.

Neureuther propping up the top ten. French racer Aleksei pans along

:09:17.:09:20.

would have been considered a prerace contender but failed to make it to

:09:21.:09:24.

the finish, he made it further than Sebastien Hummer not the ideal way

:09:25.:09:30.

to lead the World Championships. -- leave. All to play for, the top of

:09:31.:09:35.

the field is tightly packed, only a second is covering the fastest 14.

:09:36.:09:39.

-- Alexis Pinturault. Dave Ryding is handily placed in fourth, hoping to

:09:40.:09:43.

break the Austrian stranglehold on the podium positions, and secure a

:09:44.:09:47.

historic World Championship medal. Andre Myhrer, this is M has spent

:09:48.:10:01.

a chunk of the season with injury. Let's see what he can produce,

:10:02.:10:04.

Olympic bronze medallist in Whistler, in 2010, high arm, boxing

:10:05.:10:10.

the spring-loaded gates out of the way, effective technique, adding to

:10:11.:10:15.

his lead, by nearly half a second now. Jumping ever so slightly on the

:10:16.:10:23.

steep part of the course. Unusual technique. Dropping the inside hand,

:10:24.:10:29.

touching the slalom, picking it right back up, to hit the gate away,

:10:30.:10:34.

sometimes that increases the rotation on his hips, difficult to

:10:35.:10:38.

control the lower part of the body. He has only one hundredth in

:10:39.:10:44.

reserve, forcing his way across the line. And gets it, asked finish from

:10:45.:10:50.

Andre Moorer. The Swedes takes the gold medal position. -- Andre

:10:51.:10:54.

Myhrer. They still have Matias Hagen to come. Good run from the Swede,

:10:55.:10:59.

you can see the high arm carriage, both hands in front, as he goes

:11:00.:11:01.

through. Stefano Gross, 14th after the first

:11:02.:11:14.

run, on his way, a little weight, because of the technical time-out,

:11:15.:11:18.

comes charging onto the flat, I wonder if he was pushing a fraction

:11:19.:11:23.

too hard, 58.2 to for Andre Myhrer, Stefano Gross has pushed a little

:11:24.:11:27.

too furiously out of the start heart. Just a little stumble in the

:11:28.:11:31.

first couple of dates and that has cost in his speed. Under the first

:11:32.:11:36.

initial flat. -- a little wait. Lovely skier to watch when he is on

:11:37.:11:40.

great form, so fluid, great upper body, lower body separation. What,

:11:41.:11:45.

does not quite have the timing today, to get the skis divide,

:11:46.:11:50.

having problems, generating the same acceleration that he normally would.

:11:51.:11:55.

It is going to be tight, Andre Myhrer leads for Sweden, Stefano

:11:56.:11:59.

Gross will push him every step of the way, and go second, three

:12:00.:12:04.

tenths, relief, path of the cheeks from Andre Myhrer, he stays in the

:12:05.:12:08.

leaders area. Stefano Gross into second for the moment. VOICEOVER:

:12:09.:12:16.

Daniel Yuill, the Swiss number one loves the hill, taking the first run

:12:17.:12:21.

before finishing 11, he skis for pleasure as well as World Cup

:12:22.:12:25.

points, and he loves a powder turn. -- Daniel Yule. Can he get his face

:12:26.:12:33.

up on the podium today? COMMENTATOR: Daniel Yule for Switzerland, 11

:12:34.:12:37.

after the first run, getting towards the fastest men after the first late

:12:38.:12:40.

this morning, and Daniel Yule, Scottish heritage, racing for

:12:41.:12:45.

Switzerland, 11 hundredths, his advantage at the split, he is out.

:12:46.:12:53.

Caught on the inside ski, could not get out of the turn. As he went into

:12:54.:12:57.

the right footed turn. Set him up on the inside ski. Daniel Yule is out.

:12:58.:13:05.

Ready to race, Felix Neureuther, popular German has half a million

:13:06.:13:08.

followers on Facebook, and fans across all ages. VOICEOVER: When not

:13:09.:13:14.

impressing with his slalom skills, new wells them with his dance moves.

:13:15.:13:21.

-- he wows them with his dance moves. Can Felix walks to victory

:13:22.:13:28.

and be dancing on the podium today? COMMENTATOR: The turn of Felix

:13:29.:13:32.

Neureuther, huge amount of pressure on his shoulders, Germany without a

:13:33.:13:36.

medal from the Championships. Felix Neureuther, tense after the first

:13:37.:13:40.

run. Sykes himself up. And off he goes. Felix Neureuther, rattling

:13:41.:13:47.

through the first U-turns, 0.36 the advantage with which he starts this

:13:48.:13:52.

second run, that remains intact will stop expect fireworks, new knows

:13:53.:13:55.

that he is in touch, a good run could move him up into medal

:13:56.:14:00.

contention. CO-COMMENTATOR: Great skiing, uncharacteristic mistakes on

:14:01.:14:03.

this part of the cause in the first run but that's good, the German

:14:04.:14:07.

absolutely flying in the second run. Silver medallist in 2013, took the

:14:08.:14:14.

bronze in Beaver Creek, two years ago, is it still... It is! Up a

:14:15.:14:19.

second, that is the advantage that Felix Neureuther brings with him,

:14:20.:14:25.

into these final U-turns on the flat, skiing for gold medal position

:14:26.:14:30.

for Germany, and gets there, by 17 hundredths of a second. Felix

:14:31.:14:35.

Neureuther, lost a fraction of his lead in the very last section of the

:14:36.:14:40.

course, almost ran out of steam ever so slightly, but that could be good

:14:41.:14:44.

enough to put him on the podium. So tight from here until second place

:14:45.:14:50.

and then, the four tenths of a second lead for Marcel Hirscher.

:14:51.:14:53.

Last of the Swiss now, Ramon Sennheiser and, ninth after the

:14:54.:15:00.

first run. With bid number 23, remarkable first run for the Swiss,

:15:01.:15:07.

tall and lanky, deceptively quick... -- Ramon Zenhausern. Standing little

:15:08.:15:13.

backwards on his skis, extraordinary start, but he has more than doubled

:15:14.:15:17.

his lead coming into the state. Not the skier that you necessarily want

:15:18.:15:23.

to watch if you are a young racer! His technique is kind of his own,

:15:24.:15:29.

shall we say. Late there, that has got to have cost and time. He has

:15:30.:15:34.

played eight of his nine lives, he will not be challenging for a medal

:15:35.:15:41.

now. Gives it up, how frustrating. Holds his hands very low, there is

:15:42.:15:42.

the straddle, he has to stop. VOICEOVER: In the start, Alexander

:15:43.:15:53.

Khoroshilov, the Russian enjoying another consistent season on the

:15:54.:15:56.

World Cup, training with Dave Ryding of Britain. He celebrated his 33rd

:15:57.:16:00.

birthday this week, his team-mate vulnerable dented him with a special

:16:01.:16:04.

week as a present... Will he have the skills to pay the bills today,

:16:05.:16:08.

or will he be left tearing his hair out in St Moritz? -- special wig.

:16:09.:16:14.

Next to go, Alexander Khoroshilov of Russia. Training partner of Dave

:16:15.:16:24.

Ryding. He is storming through these first few turns on the flat. That's

:16:25.:16:33.

a furious start from Khoroshilov. His lead is maintained as he hits

:16:34.:16:38.

the steep now. He is high on the racing line. Letting the skis run

:16:39.:16:42.

and carrying the speed out onto this little flat section. Just lost a few

:16:43.:16:49.

tenths of a second. The 33-year-old Russian. Good results this season.

:16:50.:16:55.

Finish third in the race in which Dave Ryding finished second. He's

:16:56.:17:05.

got a little bit of work to do here. Heat charges the last few turns and

:17:06.:17:12.

goes second. The Russian coach is happy with that and Khoroshilov is

:17:13.:17:21.

into silver now. There is Dave Ryding, keeping his boots cold.

:17:22.:17:28.

Seven men left to race. Manuel Feller is next. Feller, on his way.

:17:29.:17:38.

This could be interesting. A really wild technique with the upper body,

:17:39.:17:43.

lots of hip movement as well. Really interesting to see. He's using that

:17:44.:17:48.

to generate the power now. The question with Feller is, how many

:17:49.:17:52.

mistakes will he make? When he's fast Kameni is very fast, but he

:17:53.:17:56.

tends to make some mistakes on his run. That remains green, 0.20. He

:17:57.:18:04.

hasn't really made any noticeable mistakes yet. One little stumble

:18:05.:18:08.

sideways, and he is a bit more sketchy as he crosses the next

:18:09.:18:11.

intermediate and puts himself 100th of a second behind Felix Neureuther.

:18:12.:18:19.

Can Manuel Feller charge in front of Felix Neureuther here? Yes he can,

:18:20.:18:26.

by a quarter of a second. It's a gold for Austria and they have still

:18:27.:18:31.

got three men to come. Great skiing from Manuel Feller. Just one ever so

:18:32.:18:38.

slight mistake where he rotated just before the third intermediate, but

:18:39.:18:42.

what a technique. Skis quite close together and produces this rotation

:18:43.:18:45.

with his upper body, but his lower body has to cancel that rotation

:18:46.:18:50.

out, so there is a lot of twisting movement trying to separate what his

:18:51.:18:54.

legs are doing from what his arms are doing, which is springing around

:18:55.:19:01.

and flailing at the gates. In the start-up is Henrik Kristoffersen.

:19:02.:19:05.

The Norwegian is breaking ski racing records left right and centre and is

:19:06.:19:09.

a start back home, being nominated for awards and appearing on TV

:19:10.:19:15.

shows. He's even design his own logo, imaginatively going with his

:19:16.:19:21.

initials. Will he be crowned WC, or world champion, today?

:19:22.:19:25.

Next to go, Henrik Kristoffersen, the incredibly talented 22-year-old

:19:26.:19:31.

Norwegian. He is off and charging. Two hundredths of a second, that's

:19:32.:19:35.

all he's got over Manuel Feller after the first run. He's not

:19:36.:19:40.

holding back anything here, Henrik Kristoffersen, as he rapidly arrives

:19:41.:19:43.

at the first intermediate, he is behind Feller by 2 cents -- two

:19:44.:19:51.

tenths of a second and he is behind Felix Neureuther -- Manuel Feller.

:19:52.:19:56.

There is more offset between the gates on the second run so it should

:19:57.:20:01.

suit him, but this course is not what the Norwegian wanted, going

:20:02.:20:04.

into the World Championships. He wants it steep and more difficult.

:20:05.:20:07.

Now he's trying to generate some speed. Fourth in the giant slalom,

:20:08.:20:15.

just missed a medal there. He has won five slalom races this season.

:20:16.:20:19.

Can he denied Manuel Feller? I don't think so. He has gone third, pushing

:20:20.:20:24.

Alexander Khoroshilov out of the medal positions. Those late turns

:20:25.:20:31.

that we saw from Kristoffersen on the speed, uncharacteristically

:20:32.:20:35.

making mistakes. Dave Ryding stepping into his skis. The biggest

:20:36.:20:42.

moment of his career coming up. Matthias Haagen steps forward, the

:20:43.:20:46.

Swede. His advantage over Manuel Feller is a tenth of a second and he

:20:47.:20:50.

is charging out of the starting heart here, a tragic year for him,

:20:51.:20:59.

he lost his wife, and extreme skier, in South America last summer in an

:21:00.:21:03.

avalanche. Just a little late as he went on to

:21:04.:21:10.

the steep and it could cost him at this next intermediate time, it

:21:11.:21:18.

hasn't! Hagen Is still good. Great run he skis with his skis very close

:21:19.:21:23.

together which allows him to take a tight line. He's giving this

:21:24.:21:30.

absolutely everything he's got, and he's out! Just on that final little

:21:31.:21:37.

roller, Matthias Haagen was risking absolutely everything. No risk, no

:21:38.:21:47.

reward, in slalom. Feller leads, not a

:21:48.:21:51.

-- Felix Neureuther in seconds. It's time for the rocket man, Dave

:21:52.:21:58.

Ryding, fourth after the first run, the 30-year-old, who learned to

:21:59.:22:03.

sleep acrobatic space ski on the plastic slope of Pendle in

:22:04.:22:09.

Lancashire. He had a fantastic first run. 1400s of sacking, that is the

:22:10.:22:12.

advantage he brings with him the second run over Manuel Feller.

:22:13.:22:16.

Didn't quite have the timing that he had on the first run in that flat

:22:17.:22:20.

section of the course. Timing is absolutely everything for generating

:22:21.:22:24.

the speed, and Ryding is clean but not quite as fast as the current

:22:25.:22:30.

leader, Manuel Feller, 0.26 at the moment between first and second

:22:31.:22:35.

position and Ryding is struggling here. 0.27 behind. He needs to find

:22:36.:22:41.

some acceleration, this next transition from the steep here onto

:22:42.:22:45.

the flat is Kiefer Dave Ryding. The British number one, can he get in

:22:46.:22:50.

amongst the medals? -- is key for Dave Ryding. Just didn't have the

:22:51.:22:57.

same timing and clean skiing that he had on the first run. Lost a lot of

:22:58.:23:01.

time on that first section. Normally Dave Ryding would be very good at

:23:02.:23:06.

carrying speed from the steep onto the flat. 26 to go and they are all

:23:07.:23:15.

Austrian. They are up -- six to go. We're going to have an Austrian

:23:16.:23:20.

gold. The resemblance to his brother Mario is obvious. Michael has

:23:21.:23:27.

stepped it up this year with some spec -- some sensational slalom

:23:28.:23:30.

skiing in the first run this year. Michael Matt is in contention. Mario

:23:31.:23:36.

Matt was one of the inventors of the new slalom technique with the skis

:23:37.:23:39.

shortened and the radius of the Skeete tight end. Stooping low, used

:23:40.:23:45.

to ski with the skis very wide apart to control the acceleration. Michael

:23:46.:23:49.

Matt now with a narrow stance but the same hunched over technique.

:23:50.:23:56.

Michael Matt trails by 11 hundredths of a second, he's managed to find a

:23:57.:23:59.

tenth between intermediate number two and split number three. He's

:24:00.:24:07.

down in sixth place and that means that Feller is guaranteed a medal,

:24:08.:24:14.

with just two to come. Feller leads the way, two Austrians to come, will

:24:15.:24:20.

the clean sweep happen for the big alpine ski racing nation now? Number

:24:21.:24:26.

ten, Marco Schwarz. Second after the first run. He brings with him a lead

:24:27.:24:30.

of a quarter of a second over team-mate Manuel Feller into this

:24:31.:24:35.

second run. Marco Schwarz at the first intermediate. His advantage

:24:36.:24:40.

has been sliced in half and just cut the turn off going on to the steep,

:24:41.:24:43.

so he didn't come on with much direction. Feet close together,

:24:44.:24:50.

controlling that upper body. Good core strength from Marco Schwarz. He

:24:51.:25:01.

might be able to claw some of the time back... It hasn't changed much

:25:02.:25:05.

but it is still red Fort Marco Schwarz and I think Manuel Feller

:25:06.:25:08.

might be dreaming of a silver medal now at least, as Marco Schwarz

:25:09.:25:14.

pushes hard for the line and goes sixth! Felix Neureuther has got a

:25:15.:25:19.

medal and Germany are off the mark, finally they get some reward and

:25:20.:25:25.

Feller can finish no worse than silver. The Austrian clean sweep

:25:26.:25:33.

will not happen. So, Feller leads and Felix Neureuther is second,

:25:34.:25:39.

Henrik Kristoffersen is on the cusp, in bronze medal decision. One man to

:25:40.:25:42.

come and it is of course the World War I, Marcel Hirscher. I fully

:25:43.:25:52.

expect Hirscher to ski 100% on this second run. He knows there is only

:25:53.:25:56.

one way to ski slalom and that is all-out attack. Which Austrian will

:25:57.:26:03.

win gold? Will it be this one or the one at the top? Of course, Hirscher

:26:04.:26:09.

doesn't drain with the rest of the Austrian team committee trains on

:26:10.:26:13.

his own. He's all they said he wants this young Austrian team to come

:26:14.:26:17.

through and start pushing him on the World Cup. They've done it today.

:26:18.:26:21.

He's moved from the leaders in close to take his position in the winner

:26:22.:26:24.

's area. Marcel Hirscher has the lead after the first run and his

:26:25.:26:32.

advantage is 0.6 seven. Classic textbook, as predicted. Hirscher on

:26:33.:26:37.

the charge and he is already adding time to that lead. Brilliant skiing

:26:38.:26:43.

from Marcel Hirscher, so lean, so far from behind on the turns, he can

:26:44.:26:47.

generate speed and acceleration at will down the slope. Getting even

:26:48.:26:52.

better for Marcel Hirscher! You looks so calm and relaxed over his

:26:53.:26:56.

skis, it's almost like a training run for Marcel Hirscher. He's

:26:57.:27:02.

ripping it up, here. 0.70. He can still afford a mistake and go on and

:27:03.:27:09.

claim the gold. Not since 1996 when Alberto Tomba won both has anyone

:27:10.:27:16.

done the double but he has done it now, the golden double for Marcel

:27:17.:27:24.

Hirscher! He won the GS last week and now he's taken the slalom title.

:27:25.:27:28.

Absolutely brief from Marcel Hirscher. When he's on form and on

:27:29.:27:33.

fire, he is unstoppable. That second run, remember the course is cutting

:27:34.:27:39.

up with every skier down and Hirscher able to generate such power

:27:40.:27:44.

and clean turns. His great mate, Felix Neureuther, is there to

:27:45.:27:49.

congratulate him, and his team-mate Manuel Feller. He has destroyed the

:27:50.:27:55.

rest of the field today to reclaim the title he won in 2013 and to

:27:56.:28:03.

snatch his second gold, here in St Moritz. It is perfect the sun is

:28:04.:28:09.

shining, great conditions today. The skiing was as well pretty good.

:28:10.:28:13.

Austria is pretty stoked with another two on the podium. Thank you

:28:14.:28:18.

to an amazing crowd, have a nice Sunday and they safe trip home.

:28:19.:28:23.

Confirmation of victory for Marcel Hirscher, he takes the gold ahead of

:28:24.:28:31.

Manuel Feller and Felix Neureuther takes the bronze for Germany. Great

:28:32.:28:35.

Britain's Dave Ryding ultimately finished in 11th. St Moritz has seen

:28:36.:28:39.

some great racing here at the World Championships and we've covered it

:28:40.:28:42.

live on the red button, but if you've missed anything, here's our

:28:43.:28:45.

Graham with a quick reminder of the best of the action.

:28:46.:28:47.

With a World Championships in town, all signs led to St Moritz, a place

:28:48.:28:55.

rich in alpine history, ready for a new chapter to be written with two

:28:56.:29:02.

weeks of racing. The festival began with the Super G and high hopes for

:29:03.:29:11.

the poster girl. She goes second! Mikel gets it by a third of a

:29:12.:29:17.

-- Nicole. Beads to gold by her Austria -- Austrian rival, ouch.

:29:18.:29:33.

The 21st-century reincarnation of the crazy pair upset the form books.

:29:34.:29:46.

The victory was not a complete surprise but these shock bronze left

:29:47.:29:52.

St Moritz reverberating, much like the crash barriers in the finishing

:29:53.:29:55.

area! COMMENTATOR: Brilliant. The

:29:56.:30:00.

championships were up and running and all signs pointed towards more

:30:01.:30:05.

great racing to come. Up next, the Alpine combined, downhill and

:30:06.:30:10.

slalom, to crown the world's best all-rounder. Fears that the Swiss

:30:11.:30:14.

challenge was ending intensified with this season-ending injury. The

:30:15.:30:18.

home nation weren't feeling sorry for themselves for long. Wendy is

:30:19.:30:25.

the combined champion of the world! Switzerland have their first gold.

:30:26.:30:30.

Further home success followed in the men's race. Switzerland have two

:30:31.:30:38.

more medals. Luca is the world combined champion. The Swiss were on

:30:39.:30:44.

a roll. Could they maintain the momentum in the blue-ribbon events?

:30:45.:30:50.

The signs were looking good for the man who won here last year and had

:30:51.:30:54.

the luxury of behind closed doors practice runs before the

:30:55.:30:58.

championships. The big man is attacking the mountain in St Moritz

:30:59.:31:03.

's! With the stands packed to cheer him home, he didn't let them down.

:31:04.:31:07.

Tucks in and takes gold medal position! First full Switzerland.

:31:08.:31:15.

The women's downhill was a thrilling battle from start to finish. Sophia

:31:16.:31:21.

took the lead but her expression in the finish area said it all. The

:31:22.:31:24.

Italian knew she wouldn't be on top for long. Gold was living. The best

:31:25.:31:30.

downhill rider of the season leads the World Championship downhill.

:31:31.:31:34.

Lindsey von may be the greatest of all time but the Americans seemed

:31:35.:31:38.

unusually unsure of herself in St Moritz. Bronze for her and a smile,

:31:39.:31:43.

but not the middle she likes to deal in. smile, but for most, however, a

:31:44.:31:49.

medal of any colour is not to be overlooked, redemption, in giant

:31:50.:31:52.

slalom bronze, after downhill disappointment. Gold went to Tessa

:31:53.:32:05.

Worley. Austria took a 1-2, with Marcel Hirscher taking the first

:32:06.:32:11.

gold medal of this Championships and his first ever in GS. The

:32:12.:32:14.

Championships concluded as always with the slaloms, in the women's

:32:15.:32:20.

face, the signs were pointing overwhelmingly to retains

:32:21.:32:42.

title for Mikaela Shiffrin. A glut of Swiss gold, the host nations are

:33:26.:33:33.

We all know that skiing and snowboarding have a reputation for

:33:34.:33:38.

exclusivity, but we wanted to show you that this does not have to be

:33:39.:33:42.

the case. Jenny Jones has been out to prove it. You may not think that

:33:43.:33:47.

this is the place to come to show that snow sport is not just for the

:33:48.:33:51.

privileged and wealthy, but bear with me. I am here in Verbier, to

:33:52.:34:01.

meet a ski instructor in one of the poshest results in Europe but it

:34:02.:34:04.

could not be more different from where he was just a couple of years

:34:05.:34:13.

ago. Let's do this. It's crazy, absolute crazy, to think that three

:34:14.:34:16.

and a half years ago, I had never put skis on, had never thought about

:34:17.:34:20.

skiing before, it was not available for me. This is where I grew up.

:34:21.:34:33.

School was not great. My dad, he left us. Everything was a bit

:34:34.:34:40.

downhill. I did not know who I was so I was following the crowd, I was

:34:41.:34:44.

just trying to fit in to something, I did not know what I was fitting

:34:45.:34:46.

into, it was a bit of a strange one. # "Fix Up, Look Sharp" - Dizzee

:34:47.:34:49.

Rascal. I was wanted to show that I was the

:34:50.:34:59.

big man, I wanted to show that I was a call big person, I was just trying

:35:00.:35:03.

to find out who I was, I did not know who I was, until I started

:35:04.:35:06.

skiing I did not have a clue who I was. -- cool, big person. -- I

:35:07.:35:16.

always wanted to show that I was the big man. I got myself into a lot of

:35:17.:35:23.

trouble. When he was about 15, 16, I was worried, because I felt he

:35:24.:35:26.

didn't know where he was going. At that age, he didn't want to listen

:35:27.:35:31.

to what I had to say, because it is the age where they know best. All

:35:32.:35:36.

this is going on, then he got introduced to snow camp. Yes, he

:35:37.:35:42.

did, the way it first happened, I was watching something on TV, they

:35:43.:35:45.

were in central London, they had been doing a bit of a promotion. And

:35:46.:35:51.

I thought, wow, he would love that. The away seem to be skating. It is

:35:52.:35:55.

something I've never been able to introduce him to. We did some

:35:56.:36:00.

research, it was a weekend, I took him to the station, you were

:36:01.:36:04.

apprehensive, wasn't you. What did you think? I was going to say... We

:36:05.:36:09.

pulled up and he said, why have you put me on this, why did you even

:36:10.:36:14.

arrange this! I said, go for today, just go for today and if you don't

:36:15.:36:18.

like it, don't have to go back again but give it a go. He loved it... He

:36:19.:36:24.

said, amazing. I said, are you going back tomorrow. He said, yes, I will

:36:25.:36:29.

go back tomorrow. I never dreamt this would happen, never dreamt this

:36:30.:36:31.

would come out of this moment. So, here we are, exactly where you

:36:32.:36:43.

first started. I walked in, and the first thing I thought, it's freezing

:36:44.:36:47.

cold, actually freezing cold! To step on the snow and how slippery it

:36:48.:36:51.

was, completely out of my comfort zone! A bit daunting at first. What

:36:52.:36:56.

they do here, they are a youth charity helping underprivileged

:36:57.:37:00.

young people get into snow sport, perfect candidate, I had never seen

:37:01.:37:04.

snow, had never thought to put skis on. And then snow camp offered you

:37:05.:37:08.

an apprenticeship. That's right, the way that the scheme works, you get

:37:09.:37:12.

the work placement within the snow industry, you get to see how it

:37:13.:37:17.

works, insight into what the world is that you're going into, that for

:37:18.:37:21.

me was amazing. What doors has it opened in terms of getting out of

:37:22.:37:25.

the mountains? Through the apprenticeship I am now

:37:26.:37:27.

internationally qualified as a ski coach, working my way up. Just

:37:28.:37:32.

through that one day of saying, you know what, ma'am, maybe I'm going to

:37:33.:37:37.

go... It has completely changed my life. -- you know what, mum. Who

:37:38.:37:41.

would know that I would ever be able to come to a place like this, get on

:37:42.:37:45.

a plane, into the mountains, get straight to it. That is the point

:37:46.:37:48.

when I knew, this is the life for me. Really nice, seriously, really

:37:49.:37:55.

nice! Really smooth, really control, keep it up.

:37:56.:37:59.

That had a lot more flow. Do you think he is out of his comfort zone?

:38:00.:38:06.

People buying a lot for this ski instruction and to have a good

:38:07.:38:10.

holiday but actorly you look so relaxed, very confident, enjoying

:38:11.:38:15.

himself, you might think he was out of his comfort zone, but not. The

:38:16.:38:19.

coaching sessions? It's crazy, it's not just a different area and a

:38:20.:38:23.

different place, it's completely different people, different

:38:24.:38:26.

upbringing, background to what I have had. I have had to learn a lot

:38:27.:38:30.

about myself to interact with it. If I was the same person I was three

:38:31.:38:34.

years ago, I would not fit here, I have had to change and grow. To be

:38:35.:38:38.

here is enough, I want to swallow everything, and become the best I

:38:39.:38:42.

can be. I would love to be able to go back to my borough and give back

:38:43.:38:47.

and change summary is's life, and do what snow camp have done for me,

:38:48.:38:51.

literally given me the opportunity to be here, you know. -- Snow Camp.

:38:52.:38:56.

And build a career for myself. Look at this amazing place, and just

:38:57.:39:00.

standing here, with half the people that do come skiing every year, is

:39:01.:39:05.

amazing. On paper, I shouldn't be here, you know? What Snow Camp do is

:39:06.:39:12.

so in spiralling, both Graham and I work with them and time and again we

:39:13.:39:16.

see how the sport we love can change lives are the better. -- is

inspiring. Get out there and give it a go, hundreds of slopes all over

:39:21.:39:23.

the country, it does not need to be expensive, I promise it will be fun.

:39:24.:39:28.

Time to the last ski social of the season, you have been sending in

:39:29.:39:32.

questions in abundance and Bosco is up first, wanting to know how can I

:39:33.:39:37.

reduce muscle fatigue after a day on the slopes? The classic ways are hot

:39:38.:39:42.

tub, in North America, or sauna, in the Alps, but the professionals

:39:43.:39:46.

would rather sit on an exercise bike up for up to an hour, flushing the

:39:47.:39:52.

lactic acid out. You can go classic apres ski, replacing all of the

:39:53.:39:55.

minerals that you have used during the day (!) why are there no

:39:56.:40:02.

downhill snowball braces? It is too dangerous, skis, two edges, is one

:40:03.:40:06.

of them goes, you have a safety net, on a snowboard, at close to 100 mph,

:40:07.:40:11.

if the edge gives out, you will, on the ice, and it is not pretty. There

:40:12.:40:16.

is a reason why snowboards were banned on most speed skiing tracks,

:40:17.:40:21.

too dangerous. Alice wants to know can you snowboard? Yes, I can

:40:22.:40:26.

snowboard, and I really good at it, much better at snowboarding then Ed

:40:27.:40:30.

is at skiing! That is not true, I am a brilliant skier! The reason is

:40:31.:40:34.

that snowboarding is so much easier, so much less going on, technically.

:40:35.:40:38.

It's because you want to let your hair down after you have been in the

:40:39.:40:41.

uptight alpine environment! I think there is a challenge coming on which

:40:42.:40:46.

we will settle next season. We look forward to it. You have been sending

:40:47.:40:52.

in photos all winter, and videos, there has been a mix of the good...

:40:53.:41:06.

It is fair to say, the bad... And the ugly! But I think this clip of

:41:07.:41:21.

little Mika sums up most of your sentiments. Skiing! Skiing! Can't

:41:22.:41:30.

wait until he has snowboarding in his vocabulary! As much as we agree

:41:31.:41:34.

with Mika, it is always good to leave your audience wanting more, we

:41:35.:41:41.

will be reaching fever pitch before the unpicked. We will close the show

:41:42.:41:45.

with a view of the best bits from the winter, and last week we asked

:41:46.:41:48.

your suggestions for a track to accompany this, we got a blend of

:41:49.:41:53.

old and new. One of your favourites was human by Rag'n'Bone Man, but we

:41:54.:42:04.

have heard a lot about recently, so we have gone for something a little

:42:05.:42:09.

bit different. Enjoy your spring, we will see you next year.
