Day 6 Snooker: World Championship Highlights

Good evening. The number 90 has been celebrated throughout the country

today but the number six is also significant for us in Sheffield. It

is day six of the World Championship and it is a transitional day, when

the first round finishes and the second round gets under way and to

this point no fewer than six of the top seeds have been shown the door.

The world's number five, Judd Trump did not want to be next but he found

himself in a whole lot of trouble against last year 's UK runner-up,

23 map. The firecracker from China -- Liang Wenbo. He went further in

front, Judd Trump in a whole lot of trouble. The match seemed to turn in

frame 11 when Liang Wenbo went for a double on the green. That was really

no need to do this, a risky shot when his opponent was the one who

needed to take the risks. From there, Judd Trump won the frame and

went on to win four of the next five frames and we really do have a

firecracker of a finish, eight frames all, first to 10 going

through, we will pick them up at frame 17 in the company of Willie

Thorne and John Bercow. Judd Trump will be glad to be back at the

table. That black is still available in both corners. The reds are nice

and loose. His chance to get to nine, one frame away from victory,

Liang Wenbo has missed his. Anything would be straight on the

next black, in the right-hand corner, nothing is available, he

needs to get the angle on the black. That will open everything up. You

would not think you have to play the kiss pacey, but I would want to move

the Apple and try and make the three reds part. That is a very poor shot.

I think he may have had a result, he landed on an Apple to the middle. It

is not what he played for, but he will take it. Not quite which way he

played to come in but he will be happy on this one. -- cannon. He is

short on position, can he go in between the yellow and brown here.

Needs it to slow up, needs to slow up... He is just about on the Apple

to the middle but if it is straight, as badly hampered as he is, touching

the ball has nothing to do with the shot -- Apple. The referee will

always call it -- red. It is very awkward the way it has finished.

Tremendous pot. That was top drawer. You try striking down like that,

straight, could not have cued it better, well played. Going to be

left with the red at distance, but the way he took the pots it should

not be a problem. People probably play for the black. Needs to get to

62. He could play for the blue but the only reason why I thought he

should not is because he did not get the right angle. There is only one

red available. Slow down. He has not got this cue

ball in shot, he is struggling. The pressure is starting to show on both

players here. And sometimes it shows up, not so much in the mist pots but

the cue ball control, when the player is under pressure he

concentrates that much on potting the ball, it is like positional play

is secondary in your mind and you need a good positional play if

you're going to make frame-winning contributions. He has decided to

play into the bunch. Should go on to take a one-frame lead.

Still not in prime position yet, though. Trying to get towards the

middle pocket. He would be flicking off the red and the path of thought

White would be going through the middle. He is looking for an

alternative but he needs to go back to the original choice. He needs to

play short. Just play short. You do not want to be going in off that

that is for sure. Played the stunt rather than the screw, I do not

blame him for that. To play in between green -- yellow and brown,

you have to put it on the left-hand side. He just crept in and it is

perfect now! That blue, he thought about it. He hit it slightly too

thin. In actual fact, too thick, I beg your pardon. But it went in. Now

the frame is at his mercy. Liang Wenbo, his first chance in the

frame. And he is staring 9-8 in the face,

this pot-macro will do it. In it goes, 52 points the lead, -- pot.

Nicely on the red. Well, not really necessary, he was

trying to play an exhibition shot. 53 points in front, 43 remaining.

That was more than enough, Judd Trump has won six of the last seven

frames and the man who has been to one the Crucible final five years

ago and he has got close to a second and third. At the interval in this

match, Judd Trump tweeted his followers saying that he might stand

them a drink if he got out of jail in this match. The keys are firmly

in the lock now in the next frame, 59 points up. What a fantastic part!

First-class. You deserve what you get from that shot. -- pot. What he

has got is the brown, maybe just enough angle, brown and one more red

needed and it is looking now as though Judd Trump is going to win

this match and he has had to dig deep. He is playing an man at the

top of his form particularly in the first session. Start of this 6-3

down, went to 7-3 down but he never stopped fighting and then all of a

sudden, he started to cue smoother and the smoother he cued the better

he looked. It has been a terrific match. And I think Liang Wenbo, OK

the World Championship is basically the last match of the season, he is

down for great things in the game. I am sure he is. Runner-up in the UK

Championship, but Judd Trump will now be sitting down and that sip of

water will taste sweet. Quietly please.

He played the cannon on the red near the cushion, he will be close to

giving Judd Trump the handshake now but I have been very impressed with

Liang Wenbo, he is improving every time I see him. OK, we will all look

back and ask if he played -- mugger should have played the double on the

green, but that is the way he decided to play it. Now he will want

to shake his hand. And he does. It has been a great match. It has been

played in a very sporting fashion and that is what it means to Judd

Trump because there must have been times during the match that he

thought like the other seeds who have gone, he was going to go, but

Liang Wenbo could not kill him off and is Judd Trump very relieved he

is through to the second round? He beat Liang Wenbo in a tremendous

match by ten frames to eight. So relieved, so happy, I was looking

out at 7-3 down and I was not doing too much wrong but everything seemed

to go wrong and everything seemed to go right for him. At the frame at

7-3 and that turned out. I played some great stuff, I would have been

disappointed to lose after that. I had a lot of confidence but I could

not show it. I did not get the chances until the very end to get in

amongst the balls and score heavy. That was disappointing. From the

next game I need to make sure my safety is brilliant from the start.

He is a great player, better than his ranking suggests. For me, I have

a good record against them, I have beaten him twice, so I took a lot of

confidence from that and went out and relaxed and hopefully do the job

and relax now and let's look do the talking. Very strong performance

from Judd Trump and he battles into the second round where he will play

Ding Junhui and that could be the tie of the round. In this quarter,

this evening where all were about to finish off the last of the

first-round matches between this pair, we have 24-year-old 22-macro,

he has made a leap up the rankings should grow Karen Wilson.

-- Kyren Wilson. He is taking on Joe Perry.

They began their concluding session this evening, the youngster 5-4 in

front, it has been high-quality. The world Number 10, Joe Perry has

really come back into it. The Cambridge player has taken the lead

8-7 as the pick-up in frame 16 and it has been high-quality, Stephen

Hendry and John Parrott following this one. And he was and he got it.

What a good shot that was. Sometimes you just have no alternative. He

cued that beautifully. Cracking shot.

Foul. Joe Perry one, Kyren Wilson seven. At first he thought he was

going to catch the knuckle and leave the cue ball down here. He still

left a pot on but it is not quite as bad as he thought it was going to

be. Here's the funny thing, we mentioned earlier how Kyren Wilson

was playing when I watched him practice, the shot he is about to

take on is one he was playing all the time when I was watching him and

he was knocking them in for fun. This is the Crucible, he is 8-7 down

and he is 38 points behind. Can you cue and hold up?

He has got the pot, missed the cue ball.

But the black to the middle, but he has a bit of work to do with the cue

ball. It will have to be played at pace.

Optimum pot. A good long red. He did not quite get the cue ball, but he

will recover on the black. Another good shot needed here as well. He

sacrificed a good position to make sure the black...

Big target to come off two cushions, big target.

He is hoping to actually move both of them or leave one to the right

centre. Big shot with the rest of the takes it down the cushion.

Cannot really leave the cue ball anywhere else but near the site

cushion when he plays this, not enough angle to get out. He has got

two big shots coming up and if he drops it in he will leave the cue

ball near the side cushion. 85% success rate with the rest so far,

11 out of 13. He is good with the rest. No doubt

about it. The way he played it was impressive, mostly just stunned it

and got it out, the cue ball had to stay pretty much near the cushion

there. And effort, this, at the moment. Perfect time to take off the

red off the right cushion. There was a good aggressive shot he

is still on the red to the left centre. He is certainly not shying

away from playing the right shots even if he is feeling it at the

moment. Just got to be careful with this

shot that you do not get into the cue ball too much, Cam and the red

off the top cushion. -- cannon. He played it nicely. I would suggest if

he makes the clearance here, this will be one of the best he has ever

made. Carrying the black would be the

easiest way. The last red. He can play from the red to anyone

of three pockets here, right middle or both corners. Do not think he

will play to take it out. He has played for the left centre,

this is tricky. He will have to be straight on the red, looks easy on

the camera. This is missable. Yes, you could not really play that

any further, just had to drop it in, let gravity take hold of the red, he

has a bit more angle on this blue than he wanted, the position is a

bit trickier. He has not this is an absolutely

stunning break so far. This will puncture Joe Perry, it really well,

he will be sitting there, thinking, how have I lost the frame? Just got

to make sure he gets the position on the green here.

Yes, a couple of shots, he will be thinking, is he starting to feel it?

Not if you go by this break! Very impressive. Just the brown and

the blue to win a frame that never looked likely.

I often say at this level, it is about winning the frames that you

shouldn't and this has been a magnificent break.

Well played, Kyren Wilson. What a break that is. Absolutely fabulous.

Joe Perry just nodded his head, what can you do, that is one of the best

clearances that the Crucible this year, a brilliant break from Kyren

Wilson and it is level at eight frames all. No wonder he was

nibbling his fingers, because Kyren Wilson who has appeared here for

only the second time won the next and he now leads 9-8 and on the

brink of his very first victory at the Crucible as we head into the 18

frame but this is very tense. The youngster is just four points ahead

with three colours remaining. Now, there is a little chance but you

need to make sure you do not put the cue ball in the corner pocket, try

to line it up with the black. He has hit it too thick. Far too thick.

I really do not know whether he played that or not, I have no idea!

But if he did, it was genius. He cannot have played that, how can

you judge high far the blue is going to come off that knuckle? If he

comes back the way, all he has to do is stick it out a tiny little burnt

and it is portable. Still do not know what shot he played there. --

pottable. What does Kyren Wilson play now? If he hits the blue he has

a chance to pot it. I do not like any of the other shots. He comes off

the blue, the cue ball will hit the knuckle and you do not know where it

is going. This is the shot. The things that can happen on a

snooker table. I will be worried about if he plays off the side

cushion, I would be worried about hitting the knuckle with the cue

ball. Interesting that he played it so

hard really, just made the angle much more difficult to judge,

playing at that pace. Do not know why Kyren Wilson is

playing it at that pace will stop --.

Foul. Mess. Joe Perry, five. He would have done well to go through

the middle of the blue at the back and miss the blue. Jill took a

calculated risk they are putting Kyren Wilson back in. It is his turn

and he just needs two pots. To get onto the pink nicely, by any

stretch. Might be four cushions. He took the free ball. Could not

believe that. I presumed he would play the blue. Settle down please!

Is the blue not unnatural angle to get onto the pink? I could not

honestly believe he was playing the black. I do not know. I thought it

looked, maybe he could not get into the cue ball. I do not know why he

did not take the Tough if he just needed the pink, he

has to play this at pace. Thank you, quiet place. There can

only be tension because he hit that so hard. Totally understandable.

After the last couple of shots Kyren Wilson has had, they have been a

little bit too hard. He could not have played that any

better. He made that absolutely sweet. Just

had a look of going nine all, didn't it? An unbelievable frame of Stoker,

57 minutes played, Kyren Wilson had a chance, Joe Perry had a chance but

it is Joe Perry, it is nine all and we are into a thriller at the

Crucible. A thriller and only the second frame decider of this opening

round, in we go and can Kyren Wilson put that missed pink out of his mind

as we go in here? Joe Perry is at the table, he is in front but he is

stickered behind the green here. -- snookered.

That will be going back. The problem he has got there, because the cue

ball is tucked in behind the green and nearly touching it, it is

difficult to get the side on without fouling the cue ball when you follow

through. If he goes over to the right-hand side, the cue will be

close to the green and the more you follow through and the thicker your

cue gets, you could get close, it is hard to get side on.

That time, he managed to get this side on. Kyren Wilson, four.

You can see what he was trying to do but I'm not sure this shot was on.

He had two goes at it. There really is only one macro shot. The red that

it is that the right of the pink and that is the only one and he would

have to hit it to perfection. Maybe the up and down one. Try and hit the

red on the right-hand side. But this is horrible. He is in all sorts of

trouble here. That was as hard a snooker as you

can imagine. Kyren Wilson, where is your bottle? A chance to win the

match. Nicely played. Always need a little

bit of respect. Cute that beautifully.

APPLAUSE. Excellent shot. Under this pressure. These are the situations,

if you want to be a top player, you have got to thrive on. 16.

Incredible. John always talks about the game and fractions. Joe Perry

was how many millimetres away from being perfect on the red? 17. That

is such a bad thing. Obviously that Red Bull helps him but he's not

guaranteed to get on it. I am just wondering if he has come straight or

not. Has not got much of an angle there.

What a shock that is. What a shock that is. Fabulous. I will give him

the benefit of the doubt and say play for that gap. But he has been

playing the other side of the green and brown. The position was

incredible. He has overscrewed. Going to have to leave

middle-distance red unless he will go round the table. That is what

he's playing. Another fantastic shot.

APPLAUSE. 28. Just catches the draw here and he

has had a result not leaving it but that green and brown still a massive

target. If you can get in behind the, you could have him in all sorts

of trouble. APPLAUSE. Not quite. He has come

straight around to look at the pot. He is building himself up for this.

Similar shot that he knocked in a couple of frames ago. He has done it

again. APPLAUSE. What a pot. You can't cue

one better than that. You really can't. Stunning pot.

APPLAUSE. His heart must've been in his mouth there. It looked like he

was going to sneak round the back of that. Come on, John, who is going to

win? I haven't known since the start of the match and I certainly don't

know now! All I do know is it did have a 10-8, 10-9 written all over

it. When it gets this close, I genuinely don't know.

The top one goes to the right corner. That is not good on the

pink, unless he has fined an angle to go in and out. But there is a bit

of distance between those two reds. I don't like that shot at this

stage. It was a poor shot of the red. Gone twice across the table

from that Redeye was talking about to the right corner. Decent effort.

He has got a chance at it. A fabulous attempt. Not ideal but he

got a shot at it. He just plays top spin with the left of the two reds.

Pretty good from here. Good part.

APPLAUSE. One of the problems here is the pink. Not only has he got to

pop is black, he has got to make sure he does not snooker himself on

the next red. Great shot again.

APPLAUSE. 15. Two reds, two blacks. Can't see him failing from here. He

has got every opportunity to get over the line here. That caught the

knuckle, certainly was not a shock to nothing the way he played it.

Looks like it will put him out of this year's championship. 24.

APPLAUSE. Kyren Wilson has played fantastic tonight. And the Pozzi has

come out with have been incredible. Get in the! He has helped himself

together exceptionally well, this young man. And Joe Perry puts his

hand down. Kyren Wilson, what a game that was. And Kyren Wilson, how well

did you play to night? Joe Perry played fantastically well tonight

but Kyren Wilson goes to tonight and faces mark Allen in the second

round. Very tense, very tight, it is a match I will remember for a very

long time. Me and Joe flowed off each other throughout the match.

There were a lot of big breaks. It was a good standard of play. At 9-8,

the framed the Joe one, all through that, there were so many attempts

that he made that he got away with and then he flicked the brown, and

then the pink went saved and left me on the blue, and it was a horrible

pink to take on. It was just one of them really. But the crowd enjoyed

it. The Crucible is an amazing place. I want to create amazing

memories for myself. That is the first one on the list. So the second

round draw is complete. Seven seeds have been given the elbow in round

one behind the record of eight and two men have done damage already. A

meeting between world numbers nine and eight. Williams taking on

Michael Holt. McGill faces Marco Fu. Barry Hawkins takes on Ronnie

O'Sullivan for the third time in four years. Mark Allen Earl knows he

will take on Kyren Wilson and the lowest ranked player left, Sam Baird

faces the man at the top, Mark Selby. Interesting that Ronnie

O'Sullivan has been following events this evening. He tweeted earlier on,

Kyren Wilson will be the best player in the world! Praise indeed. A very

gutsy victory this evening. Just as the first round was being completed,

we were already full steam ahead with brown two because that got

underway this afternoon and it was the match between Marco Fu and

Anthony McGill to kick things off. McGill has already dispatched Sean

Murphy and in that rather understated way, Marco Fu has looked

dangerous indeed. A 10-2 win. Round two is Best of 25 played over three

sessions. The first session this afternoon, let's take a look at it.

We have finally come up with a nickname for this guy. He is the

giant killer! He is the pride of Hong Kong, he is Marco Fu! That is a

very good shot. Well played. That is a really good shot. Tough pot. What

a cracker, what a beauty. Marco Fu takes the frame. Very aggressive

shot. That is a wonderful part from Marco. Wow! He takes it and leaves

Anthony McGill 4-2. Can you believe that? Back with a 5-3 lead. Marco Fu

finish the session 5-3 in the lead. Round two beckoned for Ali Carter

and McManus. These two players met at the Crucible last year. Here he

is on his way to a first session lead. Two-time finalist of course.

Century on the way. McManus resplendent in tartan tonight to

level 3-3. 5- advantage. And that's the situation. So this evening,

1988 game I understand, round two between Jimmy White and Stephen

Hendry, the first of many classics from those two. But in terms of this

year's championship, we steam into round two from 10am. Mark Williams
