light for them all to do. It needs addressing but it has been going on

coach calls. You've got to know everything about the opposition

players who are going to kick the ball at you. Then you have got to

organise your two winners and the defensive line. You need to

understand the entire club structure. To do that, and bring a

Queensland, I think it's gohng to take time. He seems to have settled

Wakefield. They take on witness And first impressions, Mason Brown on

finding his feet in the supdr league spotlight.

Saint Helens started the wedkend at the top of the table. A fortnight

ago, they were celebrating ` win over Wigan. They followed that up

with what hits coach called an unacceptable display last wdek.

For 60 minutes of the game, they were clinical, good with thd ball

and scored some great tries. Then, for the last 20 minutes,

and scored some great tries. Then, for the last it was disappohnting.

This was a classic. I thought it was... I watched this back hn my

kitchen the day after. He is not blessed with place but what he makes

up for his intelligence. He has been fantastic since he went back to

full`back. He deserves a lot of credit. He has produced somd great

form. The frustrating thing for us would be the first half werd

attacked very well. We didn't have to do a great deal of defending the

stuff we were not put under too much pressure by Bradford. In thd last 20

minutes, we were scrutinised a little more and didn't come up too

well. Bradford scored some good tries. We were not too happx with

how we played. When you look back at last week, you've been on the back

end of some big losses. When you look back on those games, and you

see where it went wrong? Not really, and that's important to point out.

In the build`up to games, to get a sense you are going to play poorly,

you can almost justified or you know it is going to come. In the

performances we played poorly, it has been no sense of it comhng.

We've trained well in the wdek. In all honesty, what we've dond is come

up against two or three teals who have played their best performances

of the year against us. It's a combination of the two. Is he

looking for some character, some spirit to build on for next season?

Some teen spirit, yes. It w`s fantastic to score 24 points away at

Saints. He is building for next year. He is trying to get players

playing with a smile on thehr face again. They can put some good

performances between now at the end of the season, it will be great for

the year after. It is tough for them. It has been a tough old

season. Is he looking for youngsters coming through? Yes, I think so If

you look at the stronger te`ms in the super league, they've always got

quality youngsters. You do need to look at the youth. You need to try

and retain as many of the ctrrent players as possible. He knew what he

was taking off. The feel`good factor that embraced Salford at thd start

of the season has returned, thanks in part to a few fresh placds. Mason

Brown made an interesting ddbut last week. He is loving life with the Red

Devils. It was good to get a try my debut. I

run than aside and had enough pace to get away from everyone. Ht was

nice to win as well. Here comes the man on debut, Mason Brown. Lovely

footwork. Yeah, I'm enjoying it It's a big difference from London.

It's much more intense. There are more experienced players around me

so there is a lot to learn. There are a lot of young players hn London

this year. I got the opporttnity to play.

Southeast. My friend was pl`ying at college. And I was off season. I

just turned up with him to the trial. I had not played rugby league

before. I got into the squad and played in the tournament and I got

into the student squad. And from there I looked into the Broncos open

trial. The last couple of g`mes of last year were probably the best. My

debut, I scored on my first game and got a hat`trick in the second. I

finished from the bottom, actually. Giving Salford the wooden spoon 11

tries and Kate Brown had moved to Salford failed to have the Broncos

register a win. Became closdr, winning a few games. But lost in the

last few minutes. I enjoyed coming here. It was good. He changdd a lot

of things on and off the fidld. They have got a good team, London. And it

is my home club. It was a bhg decision to move. But no regrets.

How has he settled in, do you think? Very well. We saw on his debut with

a great try. He is one of those players that is just effortless It

does not look like he is running fast. But he is very quick `nd very

athletic. He has got a lot to learn about rugby league. He is vdry green

but I think he will develop at Salford and will be a great

addition. Salford looking for back`to`back super league whns for

the first time since the opdning couple games of the season. Hull FC

on Saturday. No Kevin Locke for you but Rangi Chase catching thd eye. He

played particularly well in this game. Going back to Kevin, going

against Huddersfield, he was outstanding. The

ASH we probably. `` we prob`bly We would have done anything for any

kind of win before but it is great that we are in the position where we

can be critical of the coach will take a while to really

stamp his way of coaching on. It has taken a while with the amount of

turnovers, it was always gohng to take a bit of time. It took longer

than we thought and would h`ve hoped. But hopefully now with a

couple of wins in a couple of games, we hope to kick on. The

important one for me was th`t one had Castleford. That was a game that

we could and should have won. It lifted the confidence. Compdting

against the top sides. Sincd then we have got a couple from a cotple He

has been a shining light for Hull this season. Yes, he is one of those

players that gets them going forward. I think the issue hs when

they are going forward and playing quickly and the game is spedding up,

it is then scoring points, looking for and against, the big problem is

scoring points. I guess that is why they brought Leon Pryce and Sneyd

win. You touch the ball a lot and to be creative and have vision, Hull do

a lot of the hard work but they struggle in the last third of the

field. They need to score points and to win the contest you need points.

What is promising for Lee R`dford is actually in defence they ard really

solid. It is credit to Salford how much they have scored in thd game.

And Rangi Chase is holding `ll the strings and he has been for the past

few weeks. That win. At mid London would be relegated if they were

defeated at Warrington. `` that win meant London would be releg`ted It

was somewhat predictable, w`sn't it? Yes, Warrington are in absolute

white hot form and of coursd always going to be a struggle for ` side

conceding almost 900 points this year. Going to a ground where the

scoring in team, to get a rdsult, it was difficult. Of his side `nd he

said it was worst performance that they had that for them...

people are asking when it is bubble going to burst but I do not think

that it is going to burst. They act three tries. You've even many doing

that. They have done the going well. And

hiding. But it could have bden anybody. They have got such speed

the pressure on. I played against London, I think it was a cotple of

years ago. It is good to sed Paul back. , yes, and I remember we

played London and we were going a lot about them and they scored more

than 80 points. It can happdns. Especially at home. Jet took over he

was planning already for relegation. Maybe get back to scratch and

starting again could do best thing. They seem to be really planning

Without a doubt. They have probably got the weakest squad in Colpany

macro. They goes to compete. I think it was a tough task for anybody at

London, it is all about performance. It is not about development as such.

To get performance out of this team this year is going to be very

difficult. And what you had to look at is the future. Planning to get a

future performance out of the team is crucial. London and the

south`east is such a big brdeding ground for rugby league now and so

many people are playing in that area. We need to maintain that

presence. London need to get the edge to the club. And I am sure that

is what the planning is all about. Building a squad in the next few

years that can perform at the top level. That is what we are leasured

on and what will be the difference. Huddersfield at the Jungle on Friday

night took on Castleford. It was fought against six. They cotld be

level on points with a Giants win. David was watching.

to string performances together Again, speaking about the bdst teams

in rugby league across the world, they defend well. They concdded 44

against Castleford. They have got a big issue in defence. Again,

consistency with the defencd. When Danny Brough is playing and they

have got the players in the team they are a threat. They can move it

to Ferris. They have got an attacking threat with Cudjod. And

they have got the big men and a few of the other big guys dynamhc in the

middle. They are quite thre`tening with the ball. They have struggled

in defence. Teams are coming at them. They finished top of the

league last year. Being on the top of the file and having everx team

chasing you is different to creeping up on the radar. That is wh`t they

have had to deal with. You talk about Chris Hill taking to ht like a

duck to water and so has Li`m Finn. They said after the game th`t he was

actually dropped last week but he showed what he was made of this

week. Sometimes you need adversity to get back up and show what you are

capable of. If that was the case, getting dropped last week, he made

himself known this week. Thdy have been playing very well as a team.

There is not one player that has been the standout. They havd been

fantastic as a team unit. Pdople were waiting for him to fall off.

But they have not done that. They have kept improving. They are

traditionally one of the strong clubs and they have done well this

year. And they are well coached and they have done great. Wakefheld have

been flying since James Webster was appointed head coach. Four games

without the. Ending any fears of a chin and they had a chance on

Thursday to get within a cotple of points of the play`off placds when

Widnes were in town. The Wildcats had the luggage for the conpuest but

You seem to have a knock`on effect. They have got momentum at the

moment. Widnes on the flip side they are on a downward spir`l. I do

not think that it was a gre`t spectacle. It was a couple of teams

desperate for the win. And Wakefield have shown that when you have got a

bit of form behind you, luck tends to go for you and they had some

luck. They have had a fantastic run. They have got tough fixtures coming

up. Catalan away, Warrington, Huddersfield, and then Salford. That

will be a real test for the play`offs. If they want to do

anything this year, they ard going to have to win those games. They

will have two the playing mtch better teams than the peopld they

have missed in the play`offs. One of the big things has been Tim Smith. I

think Webster has come and done a good job. He did say I'm lucky. I

spoke to Richard as well. When you have got a player that has been

comfortable and playing verx well. To long time, so well. And to come

back he slotted straight back in and I think that they are threatening

team with more direction. More composed. It was a low scorhng game

but Tim Smith has made a telling contribution Wakefield play well.

ply their trade. It was I think great for the sport. In the current

climate we cannot afford to bring the players over but with this we

can afford to bring players into internationals and I think ht will

be great for the game. Your chairman is in favour and yours is against

it. What do you think? The heart sides to every argument. Is there a

commercial argument for bringing in star players and more pounds and

pence spent in the game? I think the jury is out. You want your services

to be rewarded and the playdr services to be rewarded. Thd salary

cap came for a couple of re`sons. To insure fair distribution of talent.

So no one team could cause over the best like Wigan in the 1990s and to

ensure that clubs do not get into strife and spends too much. With the

salary cap they have still got themselves into financial problems.

I think there is an argument for, let's just wait and underst`nd how

the money is going to settld with the clubs, the TV money. And there

needs to be a look at the s`lary cap in the following years. I do not

know if something like this quickly is the right thing. I think it needs

to be looked at. We need to keep evolving. I think the tempt`tion for

players has never been greater to leave this competition. To go to the
