DId you talk a lot about that in the build-up?

Yes, it was.

It was something we wanted to address all week.

It was a great win but Wigan had a lot of players out as well.

We had a few injuries ourselves.

It was nice to win like that, but in the back of our mind we knew

they didn't have their strongest side out there.

It was good...

We were good without being very clinical.

The last couple of weeks you've looked back to the team we saw

at the beginning of the season, Tony Smith talked after the defeat

to Huddersfield about needing a different attitude

and changes in training.

What kinds of things has he done?

Yes, we went down to Huddersfield and they really gave it to us that

night, full credit to them, and Danny Brough kicked us to death,

he was sensational that night.

He had a few choice words for us, and deservedly so.

We changed a few things up in training.

Even down to some of our start times and...

You know, it is paying dividends the last couple of weeks,

but it is no good doing it for two weeks, we need to keep doing it,

keep building on it week in week out.

Kurt Gidley appears to be very much the sergeant major

on the pitch for you guys.

He has had to step up another level, even, hasn't he.

Yes, without Chrissy, Chrissy is a real sparky

player, he has some magic.

Kurt is just an ultimate professional, he knows what to do,

knows his game, knows how we should be playing, knows how

to grind teams...

Grind teams how to win, and he's been instrumental for us

especially in the last few weeks without Chrissy there.

And his game management has really come to the fore for you.

Yes, his kicking game is unbelievable, it's

he works really hard on in training, it's not a fluke, he goes out

there and puts it on the toe.

He is really working on that stuff in training and getting us

to help with all that, so I think he's a really important

cog in our team.

And what are you making of Warrington, Jamie?

I think they showed a lot of humility, I think

they are fantastic, they were brilliant that night,

and there's a few players that stand out for me,

the first would be Matty Russell, the way he returns the ball,

I think he's got some of the highest tackles.

Whenever you are a forward and you are chasing down trying

to convert from a tackle in defence, stopping the likes

of Jermaine McGilvray and Matty Russell is a big task.

When you jog it back and see them return it

halfway, its massive.

Yes.

Kurt Gidley, he puts the ball on the money

at the end of every play.

I think they've probably not have that gap filled since Lee Briers.

He is managing the game really well, his kicking game is solid,

and as he said, from pelple like Danny Brough...

Luke Gale, you need a player that's in there that will put

the ball on the money.

And lads like this big guy here, Chris Hill, Ben Westwood...

He shouldn't have scored, he just can't feel people.

A word on Wigan, Ashton, we saw some of the talent sitting

in the stands.

They are missing a few players.

despite the injuries they have had?

Yes, I think they've done really well, I think

Wigan have a philosophy, and Shaun Wane spoke

after the game about mental

toughness and toughness during this period.

You know, it doesn't matter what team put out,

they are always a real, physical, tough side, and I think

that highlights why Warrington...

That looks better, the fact that they still put up with that,

I have certainly not been in a game like that before,

where there are two men sent off, three or four sin-binned.

But proud, really proud, really gutsy performance,

never say die attitude.

What pleased me most was the togetherness of the group.

When they made a mistake, they were all patting

each other on the back and they genuinely believed

that they could win the game.

Like 30 odd years doing this, that is the worst I have ever seen,

the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen.

We scored a try, we watched it on the video, it is a try.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

He just gets it so badly wrong time and time again.

My 12-year-old daughter who does not know the rules could do

a better job.

We should preface this with, we have not seen the whole game

and none of us were there.

But if you see on paper to sendings off and three sin binings,

do you look at a game that has got a little bit out of control?

I think so, yeah.

It was all kicking off, it sort of escalated

into a bit of chaos.

Actually that morning, his son is in the same

class as mine in school.

He was really looking forward to playing against Widnes

but unfortunately, he got quite a bad injury.

From the letter of the law, I suppose it is because he has

taken him over the horizontal there.

But in my view, it just looked like a good solid tackle.

But if you slow it down, I suppose the referee

And that melee that then followed, is that where it descended for you?

I think so.

It dropped right down and you have to get control of it.

He has come back on and wanted to finish what he started and both

teams have just gone at it.

Wakefield were desperate to get the win.

They were playing really well and climbing that table.

Widnes started like a rocket, house on fire, they have gone

through a tough period and they are desperate

to get that back.

And obviously some of Denis' frustration

will have come from that.

They are in a horrible run in Super League.

When the chips are down, it feels like everything

runs against you.

I have been there.

But I am a big believer in that you make your own luck.

Sometimes you get a bad call.

But sometimes it just cannot be helped.

And another win for Wakefield.

They have done really well.

Yes, they beat us a few weeks back.

They are a really good side.

The team spirit there is brilliant.

They have had it tough for a lot of years, Wakefield.

They have been down that rabbit hole.

They are a good club.

They get great support from the fans.

They are getting their just desserts.

They are getting the wins.

Castleford were back at the Jungle on Sunday when St Helens

were in town.

Last week, the Tigers were hammered by Hull KR.

Another tough fixture for them but a good bounce back from them.

They have obviously come out and responded really well.

I do not think St Helens are their best just yet.

But as I said before, they are grabbing the wins.

Lomax's return has been massive for them.

He has scored three tries, I think, in his first three games back.

You can see by his excitement as well how chuffed

he is to be back for them.

He is a big omission.

Castleford are looking for a bit of form, but going

in the right direction.

Gale fantastic for them in this game.

He had Grant Millington alongside him.

Really directing them around.

Yes, the big fella, he has got great skills,

but that is a great try.

You can see why he was in the squad representing

at the end of last year.

I think he is a really top-class player.

He leads the team around well.

And for St Helens, you talked about Lomax coming back.

Do you think they will be a different team once

they really bed him back in?

Yes, I think so.

He made a difference, he made an impact straightaway against us.

He is really excited to be back.

As you mentioned before, a lot of teams are finding it tough

at the minute without their players.

Leeds Rhinos are definitely a part of that.

We have got a few missing that we would love to get back.

I think the best thing about Luke Gale, he has been

from Leeds down to London.

He did it tough at Bradford.

were in with a chance of winning the league leaders shield.

You know, they had a tough start of the year but the last few weeks,

especially when we played them, they played great.

They were unlucky against Wigan, and then last week...

Obviously good enough to beat an injury depleted Leeds.

A lot of downheartedness, it would appear, at Leeds,

you know when you are whacked, don't you?

Yes, we know where we are at, and we know where we've been,

we know where we need to go, that is the most important thing,

if you are at the bottom and you can't figure out what's

wrong then you're quite worried.

Some of the incongruence to do with this year has been part

of the battle.

We are getting there, taking strides, and our youngsters

have been fantastic.

They are getting stronger and getting more belief every week.

I think what is really important is that we stick to what we are

doing, we can't lose faith in what we are doing,

we just have to believe, and whatever idea you have to come

up with you have to keep hunching the gun.

We'll get there.

And for you, I don't want to go on about age because that applies

to both of you, but do you feel like the elder statesman out there?

Your team-mates are getting younger by the week.

Yes, I mentioned it the other night, we had a debutant there,

Cameron Smith, who was six months old when I made my debut!

Which is amazing.

I can't believe it because time has gone like that.

You spend a career trying to make it, and by the time you get

there you're finishing.

But it's almost like a crossing over of time to new generations.

But it's almost like a nexus, a crossing over of time

I am really privileged as part of the old one to see this

new group, and some of the successes I have had over the last ten years

with the group I came from, I want to pass that

on to the next generation, because as a Leeds fan,

they are getting there, watch out.

Do you believe you can still make that top eight?

Listen, if we can statistically still get there then

obviously I believe.

If I didn't think we were going to win a game

I wouldn't bother turning up.

I want to win every single game I play, I love that.

I am a distinctly average player that has had a career at Leeds,

15 years, but it's just on the back of desire,

just wanting to win, and I've played with some great

lads like Jamie Peacock, but those lessons I have learned,

I have to take them into the game now, try to lead by example as one

of the older players, and I promise you, these young boys

will really do well.

And that's what you want from your elder statesmen, too.

Success breeds success.

You have guys like him, guys like Burrow, Maguire,

who won so much in the past, he want to bring that

who won so much in the past, you want to bring that

onto the young guys.

I know they're going through a tough time at the moment, but some

of these young guys, they will look back on this

experience and think, we have gone through the tough times

with guys like this leading us the way.

I can definitely see them guys coming up the ladder.

Will it be very different because it is knockout football

or just because it is another game?

Well, history tells me that the two games are always different

when you play a team in the league the week before and then go back

in Challenge Cup, the results, the scores are completely different.

I think both teams will try to second-guess each other,

based on the week before, but at the minute we have

to look after ourselves.

Ashton is absolutely right.

I would just like to say I am enjoying the rugby as much

as I ever have done, even though we are in

the bottom four of the table.

A challenge is a challenge, and that is why we play sport,

we want to go out and challenge ourselves every week.

Whether you are challenging for top four, top one or coming

off the foot the table, it is a challenge and we really

enjoy it and were looking forward to this fresh competition

in the Challenge Cup.

Now time for this week's #lasttackle, when we try and dig

a little deeper into the lives of the Super League stars.

This week, we are with Hull Kingston Rovers.

I had Dumbo as my nickname growing up, and it's pretty easy

to know why, but yes, it's cool, and I love

the little baby elephants.

My mum's steak pie that she makes from scratch.

It's always good and no one can ever make it the same.

I'd have to say that.

My last meal, well, I've already said minted lamb,

I like the smell of that, so I'd have a nice

Sweet potato and regular potatoes mixed together.

Last meal was a big chicken schnitzel topped with tortellini.

For my ideal pet, it would probably be my dog that I've got

at the minute, my best mate, does everything with me.

I'd stay loyal and I'd always choose a dog, I think, first.

My ideal pet would probably be a lizard.

I'd love to have a pet monkey, I reckon that would be pretty cool.

I think it be pretty cool to have a tiger or a lion

or something to walk around with.

That would be pretty interesting, I think.

People might notice in Hull if he walked around with a lion!

Well I bet there's a few people who have got lions!

No Ben Cockayne for Rovers on Saturday.

They were at Salford.

The Red Devils had six points taken off last week

for a salary cap offences.

They are appealing, but the players seem to be keen

to get those points back, don't they, Ashton?

Always good to see players reactions to big news like that.

I think Salford did a great job.

Rob Louis and Gaz O'Brien, looks like they had a really big game,

so a great fightback to what was a tough week for them.

You know Louis very well, he's a key player for them, isn't he?

He is.

When he's fit, no injuries or anything, he's a gamebreaker,

right there, I think.

I had a couple of great years with him at the Cowboys back

in North Queensland, and he was definitely an important

part of our team back then.

And for Hull KR, off the back of the big win at Castleford,

would they have wanted to get a bit closer?

I think so, yes, it's about backing up the performance, isn't it?

Like JP mentioned, it's about getting a big win but you've

got to do it week in week out.

They've been in a tough spot, Hull KR, it's just a tough week.

Just to add to that about Salford, credit to those guys,

they're really fighting hard for each other this year.

When you look at the side, it's a really good team,

performing really well, and they're trying to

make up for the sins of their forefathers,

if you like.

Credit to them for a big win here.

For Hull KR, they are pretty busted up, aren't they?

You get the feeling they're bringing out players

who are not fully fit.

Yeah, and apparently Ken Sio is out indefinitely,

he picked up another injury to what is an important part

of their team, so, you know, they're fighting hard,

and like I said before, if rugby league was easy

everyone would be doing it.

A lot of teams are doing it tough and it is about digging your

heels in and holding on.

Gareth O'Brien seems to be going well for Salford,

another player you know well.

Yes, he is.

He had a couple of really good games for us last year.

You could see the time he was there and obviously he's gone

to Salford and had a new lease on life on his rugby career.

You know, he's playing great from what I have seen.

Credit to him.

He works really hard on his game.

I think he has found a home back there at full-back.

This is quite a try from Ken Sio, so he will be missed for them.

Certainly, yes, bittersweet.

I think he finishes up with a tough injury there but a fantastic try.

And the sin-binning coming up here, this one pretty clear,

When you've got ankles and knees involved like that, you know,

I know he probably didn't mean it, he didn't mean it to be as malicious

as it looked, but...

It is a hard one to swallow, though.

Another old team-mate of yours seems to have

done well at Hull KR.

Yes, bless him, credit to him, I coached him a few years ago

when he was in under 16 is at Leeds.

He disappeared and took the back route, went down to London,

and just great to see him back up here playing really well,

scoring tries, diving over from 20 metres out!

Did you teach in that?

No, no, he's been watching Wakefield.

Credit to him, brilliant, it's nice to see the young lads doing well.

And for Salford, they still believe they can make that top eight,

that will really drive them forward.

Won't it?

As Jamie said before, I remember us doing the video on Salford,

they are really well-balanced team, I think they have bought

well in the preseason.

They had a few guys come back for them as well,

I think they could be a wild card there.

So as the teams head for the next round of the Challenge Cup,

let's see who is up and who's down in the First Utility

Warrington remain top, they are two points

above Catalan, Hull and Wigan.

Wakefield climb above Castleford and Huddersfield are off the bottom.

Then when at Leeds means the champions are on the foot

He will look back on a really successful career.

He did a lot of good things over here as well

in the pomp of his career.

One of the best centres we have had in the last ten years for sure.

How tough was he to play against?
