Episode 14 Super League Show

After some knockout rugby in the Challenge Cup, back to the

bread-and-butter of the Super League this week. It was ran 15, it is what

is coming up. At their best in the West, can Hull hit the heights

again, they are back on the road at Wigan. Castleford go for a double

against the Rhinos, at Headingley. Richard is the first, points aplenty

forcibly's top scorer. Nothing standoffish about our

guests. Stuart Price alongside Iestyn Harris. Sam Tomkins back for

the hosts, Wigan. This is Leon Pryce. They do well to

keep it alive. Quick hands, searching left. Continuing the good

move from Hull. They are posing Wigan some problems there. Marc

Sneyd, the step. Electrifying stuff from the scrum-half. Good early

Another great win for you guys, great run coming into this weekend,

have you stepped it up a notch? Really big games, the Saints away

always a tough game. The DW Stadium is a tough place to go and win. To

win in the fashion we did, really pleasing. When it came back to

18-16, were you worried? Very worried. Rugby league is a game of

immense, we got good calls on the first half, blew them off the park.

They come back into the game. But we got it on a breakaway. Liam Watts

one of the unsung heroes. Jamie Shaul having a great season. They

have both been great. Jamie Shaul should've gotten England call. One

of the fastest players in Super League. The option of going outside

or inside. Great finish. Game change. If you are looking at form

full-backs, would he be the full-back? No-brainer at this stage

of the season. Playing so well. To have someone in the team, if they

get half an opportunity, with 60 metres out, with two quick players

chasing him, he's one of the best in Super League, playing terrifically

well. How important has Gareth Ellis been, and his leadership on the

pitch? Absolute machine, does everything right, model

professional. This season has been awesome. Absolute beast. Ben Arfa

people starting to tip you. Always pressure at Hull FC, people looking

at you. What are you saying about expectations, and what you can do?

Just keep working hard, no coincidence where we are in the

league stop we are not getting cocky, shouting from the rooftops.

Believe in ourselves, the team, keep working hard, one game at a time, a

cliche, but true. What did you make of Wigan. Sam Tomkins coming back.

They were inconsistent, periods where they had Hull on the back

foot. That has been then this year, playing in stops and starts. No

fluency as a team. Starting to get players back. Sam Tomkins is massive

for them. Long injury. A danger we will expect too much, too soon? A

real challenge in his career. 26, he has come back from the NRL, long

injury. In a career, you have times when you get challenge. This is one

of them now. How he responds to the challenge, whether he can get back

to where he was in Super League. 2013 he was untouchable. Can he get

back to that level? Nobody knows. Only Sam Tomkins knows that, but

knowing him as an individual, he is so competitive. If he is as quick as

competitive as he was, he will get back that. Should not expect too

much years only been back for a little while. Warrington went to the

upwardly mobile Trinity Wildcats. A good chance for Wakefield. He is

digging in sacking. Scoring. Craig Hall. -- he is zigzagging. Ashurst

now Warrington have come in. A bit of nonsense, and we're going to see

Westerman. He has crossed. Is this the Warrington comeback? Smith again

with a little step. And the penalty. What is the referee seeing? He is

giving a card to Kirmond, sin-binned for the rest of the game. Sio to the

rights, set up for Ben Jones-Bishop. And that is the winner for

Wakefield. An incredible run, Wakefield are on. Chris Chester said

he thought that was the most spirited and courageous performance

from a group of players he has seen for a long time. I love watching

them as well. Some of the talents they had in the side, some of the

tries they have scored our exciting to watch. And the fans never start

-- now are starting to fall back. That is a great scalp, because

Warrington have been on good form and confident going there. To score

the tries they have done and defend, when they have been in front, in a

winning condition. You have to have resilience to be able to close out a

game like that. The one blip for Chris Chester, what did you make of

them when you face them? They are very tough team, and I like Tom

Johnson, I think he is really exciting. If they can keep hold of

him, he's keen to their development. And Craig Hall is having a real go

at the moment. He is a kid with a lot of talent and I think it is

about finding the right coach to get it out of him. And Warrington, just

a blip along the way? They have had a couple of them. What you have to

do is get enough points on the boards that you can afford those.

Warrington are still towards the top of the table. They are missing a few

key figures that will come back into that, but they will come good and

they are good side. Very difficult to beat at home. If they can get the

home form right, they will be up there the end. Deyverson Eurovision,

Catalan against Huddersfield. The Giants going for three wins in a

row. And they were first on the board here. Yes, and they have had a

difficult season so far, the Giants. A great start from Aldershot. I

watched this game and the fluency of both sides was not great. Catalans

came back, and Richie Myler went off injured very early on. Carney was

the only real fly half in the Catalan team. They will be

disappointed they did not get anything out of this. But the skill

to put it on the money, exactly where Pat Richards is, a great

drive. And Catalans seem to be able to win on the road, and when they

are not necessarily at their best? They a tough team. Very difficult to

beat. Players like Richards and Carney, there are a lot of important

players. And Huddersfield had been on a bit of a revival. What did you

see in terms of that is today? A great try year. Fooling everybody. I

picked Huddersfield because Catalans were down on a few players, and

Richie Myler went. I thought that was an opportunity for Huddersfield

to start to wind the table. They will be disappointed they did not

get anything out of that game because they had all the crucial

players in the right positions and I felt that it was only going to kick

on. Super League's leading points scorer this season is the Catalan

winger Pat Richards, who has also made his way up to fourth place in

the all-time point scoring chart. He tells us that he is feeling better

than ever. Obviously, I am not getting any younger but I am happy

with how I am playing and I feel like I will continue to get better.

Here comes Richards, another Catalan drive. It is nice to live right by

the beach. The kids are starting to speak a little French. It is just a

whole new experience that I am really enjoying. When I was at

Wigan, I enjoyed playing in France. The fans are so passionate. They

love their rugby in the region. To get cheered on by them now it is

definitely different, but I am enjoying playing in front of them.

And yes, it is going well. Rolling away from three would-be defenders.

Pretty happy with our performances. We know there is a long way to go

now, but we are looking forward to finishing the year as good as we

can. We have an experienced squad, with guys that have gone on from the

situation before. So we are all pretty level-headed guys. Nothing is

won at this stage of the season. It is all about setting up the season.

The river cans. And it is a simple finish. We have our travel right now

and everything is precise. You get to the airport and you get an the

boat and before you know it, you are in England. Everything is getting

ticked off the right way. It is just about turning up, ready to go. He is

unstoppable! Big Dave is going very well. He is probably the most

skilful player I have ever seen. If he was not so big, he would be a

half-back. Because he can be so damaging, he is stuck in the middle

there and causing havoc. He is definitely one of those players with

the X Factor. Hopefully he will continue to get better. Nobody is

going to catch Todd Carney. I think we have a balanced squad at the

moment with everybody concentrating on their roles. Last year, Todd

might have thought he needed to create something out of nothing but

now he is just doing what he needs to. He has a good combination on the

right edge with Glen Stewart. And Jodie Broughton is doing a good job

finishing off those pieces. Everybody wants to win the

competition but if you look too far ahead, you are going to stumble

along the way. We just need to concentrate on ourselves, and if we

do that well, we will be there or thereabouts. You did not seem overly

impressed by his suggestion that Dave Taylor should be a fly half? He

is a fantastic player and I'm glad he is not on my side. He is massive.

You obviously worked with him and he seems a great professional to have

around. He is. But he is a different player than he was ten years ago. He

will not score from 70 metres like he did ten years ago, but what he

has got his brilliant experience. He is a great talker. And defensively,

whichever side he's playing on, they will be very secure and sound

because he is just maturing, and that is so crucial for defence. He's

a great target to kick too. He can just kick goals from anywhere. He is

34 now, and he has come back to Catalans, with a few raised

eyebrows, but he has certainly answered his critics. And certainly

enjoying life in the south of France. Too much to shout about for

St Helens or Salford when they were knocked out of the Challenge Cup

last weekend. They were first over the line at Langtree park. What do

you make of Salford? I have been very impressed with them. When we

played against them earlier in the season, they were very tough. The

big guy out wide, he is very tough. But they have been inconsistent of

late. Can you see why that might have been? I am not sure. From afar,

you want to see the results. Ian Watson last week was talking about

them playing as individuals and not as a team. I think that tried

typifies why they have not been as consistent as they could've been.

Again, another shot player with a quick off-load coming in. They have

unbelievable firepower. If they are going to score points, it is

defending that will give you that consistency. And the big fellow is a

handful, isn't it. He scored a hat-trick in this game, a terrific

young talent. A simple inside pass, it just cut them apart. With the top

teams, you do not score those points. You shut down their player.

But Salford, they are extremely good in attacking. A lovely pass. That is

the firepower we are talking about, they can score from anywhere. And St

Helens needed to win this after last week. Massive pressure because I

could feel it in the ground, the tension, getting dumped out of the

Challenge Cup, there was a massive expectation on them. They need to be

consistently good team. And after that it was all doom and gloom, --

doom and gloom. The expectation is so high, and they are right at the

top of the table, four teams supposedly Pirelli. I think that St

Helens will be there and thereabouts this year. We have just seen to

reflect try there. They are starting to come into their own with

combinations. They have had some injuries but they are getting

players back. I think they are really stable side. Yes, they were

not great last week and they have had consistency is but they would be

in the top four at the end of the season. Next to Headingley where it

was Leeds against Castleford, and do not adjust your set because last

year's champions really did start the round at the bottom of the

table. # If we could turn back time to the

good old days. # Now we are stressed out.

He wants this. He is going to have a go. And here comes Galloway. Setting

leads up for a good position. Leeds have an early score. Is this going

to be the overnight? Miller. Looking for the pass. Junior mirrors has got

an incredible ball away. -- Junior Moors. A wonderful pass from Junior

Moors. And what a pick-up and catch. Held up in the tackle. But

Castleford are getting close again. They are going to go left. And it is

high. A lot of hands underneath it. And he passes away.

Solomona with a terrific finish if it is given. Have a look at this.

Feast your eyes on this. That is absolutely sensational. Try given

and he deserves it. Well, this is almost defying the laws of physics

from Denny Solomona. Scooting away here. Straightaway, he is down the

middle. A great run, great break from Gale. Where is the support?

Milner is up there quickly. Dragged down by Maguire. Millington. Gale.

Going left. Julian mirrors is almost the irresistible object tonight. A

handful for the Leeds players. Sharp as a tack, and Dorn gets his second.

Castleford racing away now. The problems continue. Not a happy year.

It is just not happening the way they wanted to.

Massey, he was screaming in pain with a dislocated kneecap just seven

days ago. He gets the hat-trick, after the eight-week absence.

Springer. Going to be held up, Castleford coming again. Take your

pick, as to who will score, Joel Monaghan finishes it. The Leeds

supporters cannot believe what they are watching. Looking at the

obstruction. On the inside of the collision. I don't think there is

much wrong with the grounding. No. Monaghan says that study. It is a

try. Castleford almost winning it in the first hour.

High and hanging, always a problem when Monaghan is there. Solomon

picking it up. He's over to score. 36 tries in 29 Castleford

appearances. He is electrifying. Springer, a bundle of energy. That

is what they need Leeds, more of that. Give carried by Matt Cook. --

good carry. They can Springer, past one defender, three, four gone,

somehow he has gone over. Summing up the match one moment. Castleford's

enthusiasm and determination, Leeds softness in defence. Two tries in

the opening five minutes of the second half. Trying to weave and

create magic. A question mark as to why Hardaker is playing mostly on

Quite happy to test the Leeds defenders, they have looked sloppy

tonight. That is one thing they have heard good reason, good defence on

the line. They go Rover. The half-century for

Castleford, they have not had a night like this for a long time. --

they go over. Rock bottom for the Rhinos. Terrible scoreline.

Defensively terrible. Our attacking play was pretty accurate, some of

the things we did in the second half, absolute class. The players

were excellent, how they have gone about the game. Defensively, we are

starting to show a real edge, probably more pleasing than the

attacking edge. There are things we obviously need to get on top of. It

is the soft tries, in recent weeks. Castleford got out of there in far

too easily. If you break Scott and their tries. That is the concern. We

will get to Leeds in a minute, what a performance from Castleford.

Brilliant, some of the stuff they played was immense. Powell, the

coach, nice and calm, he is doing cartwheels inside. Overjoyed with

that performance, to go to Headingley, put 50 points on the

reigning champions, remarkable. Some of the players, the way they are

supporting players, Luke Gale, terrific. Getting key personnel

back. They are playing well. I think they will start to push towards the

top four. Seems unfair to pick a player out, but Julian Moors almost

unplayable. What do you do? Try to get someone else to tackle him. I

have played against them a few times. Good tackler, he is massive.

Good to see him in good form. They almost seem to be doing what Leeds

were doing last season, off-loading constantly. It is hard to defend

against, hard to get your structure. It is so difficult to defend

against. That is when you are under real pressure. Terrific pass, there

is Luke Dorn, scoring one of his three tries. There is that calmness.

Must be absolutely delighted. He had been under pressure, not personally,

a lot of injuries. The win last week, with so many players out. What

will that have done last week? They will have walked into that game

sky-high, offer the back of the Challenge Cup win. Full of

confidence, catching Leeds where they are down with confidence, that

is the result. Brian McDermott said his side were soft. What other

things would you pick out? Decision-making when the confidence

is down and? There is a whole heap of things, but mainly confidence.

Massive factor, you cannot describe it. You can see the panic on the

boys' faces, some of the decisions they are making in the game.

Uncharacteristic. You cannot go from winning the treble, to a bad team

overnight. Some of the players seem a shadow of themselves. At the

moment, their international players, they will come back to form, and

Leeds will come back to form. What would you do? They have gone from

being the most experienced team in the competition last year, to one of

the most inexperienced. A lot of kids thrown in. They have injuries,

reliant on kids coming through playing their part. They have too

many young kids in the side. Making it very difficult in the trenches.

They need some experienced boys to come back. It is a tough slog until

the end of the season. They have to get into the top eight. A lot to

play for full -- for Leeds Rhinos. He has been in Super League since

2005, bringing plenty of smiles to Castleford, Salford and London.

Scoring 100 tries were something I will hold dear for London. Hopefully

they can progress back into the league. Someone can get close to

100. A lot of the tries scored have been great. Not highly decorated

with personal accolades, my trophy cabinet is pretty empty. Just the

way I have played the game, in good spirits, enjoyably. I have been

lucky enough to score quite a lot of tries over the years. Things I will

remember forever, taking home some great memories, great games. Really

good team tries. How good a player has he been for Super League?

Fantastic career. A success story of some players coming over from the

NRL, making a career. Nothing but respect for what he has achieved.

Really an ambassador Dan and London? London is a hard place to go, small

support network. To achieve what he has done there, massive for the

game. Tributes to the late Roger Milford, the first home game since

the death of the legendary number six. A fitting tribute. Very fitting

tribute. Absolute rate of the game. The rate at the club, 400

appearances for Hull Kingston Rovers. 50 international

appearances. Did not see him play personally, I have seen tapes. Some

of the electrifying tries he scored over his career, people still

remember. To retire the number six jersey, that is huge. They will try

to direct a statue for him. Getting his team on the front foot. Hull KR

inconsistent this year. When you get someone like Kelly in your team,

starting to look fit. Creating things off the back of it, they can

be a handful. What has happened to Widnes? Started so well, now they

cannot buy a win? A lot of their form is down to Kevin Brown,

instrumental. When he's out, difficult. Important win for Hull

KR, to have a chance? Massive win. People supporting on the inside.

Hull KR can be a different team to handle when the key players are run.

For Widnes, key thing is not sticking. The things that are not

quite right. There is that man Kelly, looking extremely fit.

Scoring under the posts, to seal the win for Hull KR. Crucial time for

Widnes, in eighth place. If they do not pick up, they will start to

drift out of that state. Difficult when you find yourself on this kind

of run? Losing breeds losing, and winning breeds winning. It is hard

to break the cycle. They will be looking for a win to break that

cycle quickly. That completes the full set of matches. Here is where

they have ended up in the First Utility Super League table. Saint

Helen's moving up to fourth place. The bottom three all lost. Leeds at
