than five weeks away.

The summer months may be behind us, but it's been fun in the sun

so far in the Super 8s.

We've picked from the pack and drawn Jamie Peacock

and the Challenge Cup-winning captain Gareth Ellis,

here with both sides of the story from Hull and beyond.

And we'll start in the red-`nd-white side of that city, where

Hull Kingston Rovers were at home to Leigh in the qualifiers.

The Championship side were looking for a second strike

against Super League opposition and the commentator is Dave Woods.

It's massive for Leigh.

It's a moment that's only worth a point,

but it's a moment that means the world to them and might propel

them towards promotion!

Well, Neil Dukes, the Leigh coach, said at 12-0 down, he feared

they were going to get mulldred

So what went right for them from that point and wrong for you?

Well, firstly we should havd gone on and won the game from thdre.

He's right, we should have gone on and won convincingly.

I think for Leigh, Leigh deserve some credit,

getting themselves back in the game.

We compounded their perform`nce with mistakes and obviously

had a real drop-off.

And I think what hurts in the second half was we had three players off

injured for the rest of the game, so you're only rolling round one

person, so once you go behind, very difficult to try to get

momentum back in the game.

Obviously, the beginning of the second half was cruchal.

For them, they got on a roll, for you, it just went wrong

from the off, didn't it?

From somebody watching from the sidelines, you must be

screaming when you see a ball go out on the full?

Yeah, it's difficult to see.

I can't really have a go at Bobby Blair.

He's had some difficult personal circumstances during the wedk

and he put his hand up to play for us.

But I think when you make mistakes like this, you need

to be able to defend it.

We're playing a Championship side and a side needs to be able

to recover easily enough to get over that.

And I think the previous three weeks, we've been good

with the ball, we've been disciplined, we've been

completing our sets and not making stupid mistakes,

and the back 50 minutes of the game, we slipped into some old habits that

we'd shown during the previous rounds in the season.

So what now?

James said afterwards, quite simply, we've got

to win three out of three, but presumably you've got to pick

the guys up afterwards?

Yeah, we've just got to regroup and refocus.

The first couple of days after a loss that hurts likd that,

real difficult, no-one sleeps in the department -

the players, staff, myself.

It's a lot to deal with.

But we've just got to look forward about what we can do to makd this

right and it starts with beating London at London.

Next week, it's beating thel, then we get Huddersfield

at our place.

Beat them and we're not in the Million Pound game,

it's as simple as that.

And we can perform at a levdl to beat all those sides and it's

about ourselves as a departlent regrouping and focusing

on doing that.

Albert Kelly didn't play.

You took the decision that he was not going to be

available for selection aftdr he came back late from Australia.

How tough a decision was th`t?

It's a difficult decision to make because

at times, Albert's played vdry well for us this year.

Just the enormity of the gale, but you show compassion and give

someone time to go home and they stay longer than they want

and hamper your preparation for potentially what's been

the biggest game of our year so far.

You have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and it's disappointing

for me that his actions end up letting the club down,

let the players down, let the fans down, because he wants

to do something outside what we re trying to do as a club.

Do you think he will be back next week?

Have you made that decision yet

I've not made the decision xet.

It is ongoing at the moment between myself, Neil,

Albert and his agent, and we want to get it resolved

as soon as possible.

Do you feel, though, he still has a future

with the club next season?

It's all down to Albert.

I mean, this meeting we've got in the next few weeks,

at the moment, it's all up in the air.

We shouldn't take anything `way from Leigh, because they have

delivered, they have beaten two Super League sides now.

Do you feel that the perforlances they are putting in,

the results they're putting in shows that these qualifiers work?

Well, yeah, obviously how they performed in these plax-offs

is testament to that.

You know, the fact that thex've got the opportunity to get

into Super League next year.

I think we all expected it last year.

They failed to deliver, which put a question mark over

the system as a whole, but obviously seeing them now,

challenging, does show therd is scope for Leigh in Super League.

Well, Leeds took on Salford on Friday, and before the m`tch

there were tributes to the Rhinos' club president Harry Jepson,

who died last week at the age of 96.

Many have said, Gareth, that Headingley just won't be

the same without him?

It won't be the same, no, and it won't be the same

for myself, you know, obviously going down to Headingley

when we get to to play there and seeing him.

He was always someone who would have a story

to tell from any era.

So, yes, sad to see that Harry passed away last week.

Lovely tributes to him before the game.

It was a tight game, though, wasn't it?

Yes, it was.

You know, Leeds have been playing well.

Obviously had their injuries throughout the year,

but they seem to have clickdd in a time when they've needdd

to and obviously to see thel, got some great friends therd,

and to see the pressure a bit lifted from them,

which has been on them all xear it'll be nice to see

them getting their wins.

And Salford, they got themsdlves in front, but did you ever really

feel they had what it took to go on and win this game?

Salford are probably the surprise, really.

Obviously they have the 6-point deduction that is left

them in this position.

I always felt Leeds would h`ve enough to go on and win the game,

they've been playing some good rugby recently.

Their big players have really stood up.

But, yeah, Salford find thelselves in a tough position at the linute.

And Leeds raced away with in the second half.

I mean, the qualifiers for them are looking a fairly comfortable

business at the moment?

Yeah, and they should be, too.

Got some very good players and a very good coach in thdre.

I think they just had a difficult start to the year and that kind

of snowballed throughout.

They've got through that now.

I think they're over the loss of personnel from the previous year,

they're over their bad luck and their injuries.

They're good and I think thdy'll show that for the next thred weeks

and going into next year as well.

And how key has Segeyaro bedn to lifting everybody?

He is key.

Your hooker is such a key position.

It reminds me a bit when we were at the Bulls in '0

and we signed Ian Henderson, and we'd missed Jimmy Laws,

and then we signed Ian Henddrson and he sorted that position out

and we went on to win the Grand Final.

And he's key - he touches the ball that many times, he decides

who gets the ball.

And for Salford, they seem just to be struggling mentally almost

with where they're at because, I guess, understandably,

the players feel a bit hard,done-by that they're in this position?

And I suppose it is for this group of players.

To find themselves in this position, it's something that they probably

didn't sign up for.

But that's the reality of it.

It goes beyond the players, obviously, it goes into

the administrative side of the game, and they find themselves

in a position now where you'd think they'd probably go on and whn

the next three and finish on eight points, which, you know,

will it be enough?

We'll see.

It is tight.

Two more games to catch up on, then, from the qualifiers.

There was an all-Championshhp contest on the slopes

of Mount Pleasant, and Huddersfield played London.

Here's Sharon Shortle.

Huddersfield have had convinvcing wins over Championship

opponents in the Middle 8s, but the way this one started,

it looked like London would be giving them more of a game.

And it was the Broncos that scored the first try,

through Rhys Williams.

But it didn't take long for Huddersfield to hit back,

and after a long ball out whde from Tom Symonds found Jerm`ine

McGillvary, they were level - Danny Brough added the goal.

The Giants went on to score again before the half-time break.

A great reverse pass from Sxmonds allowed fast hands to get the ball

to Leroy Cudjoe, who danced his way through and opened up

a six-point lead.

If London did well in the first half, Huddersfield

dominated the second.

Danny Brough was increasingly influential in his first match back

after a two-game ban, and it was his break that

Joe Wardle was on the end of.

Brough was again the providdr for the next try, Leroy Cudjoe

crashing in from close rangd, and then Michael Lawrence wdnt in,

again from a ball from Brough - the third try in 11 minutes.

Brough then scored himself, a dummy and a step being

enough to open a gap to weave his way through.

Again, he converted.

By now, the Giants were 30 points up, with Brough

still orchestrating things.

Aaron Murphy scored the fin`l try and Huddersfield's Super Le`gue

survival hopes took another step forwards, while London

still have a chance of the Million Pound game.

Both sides were without a whn at this stage of the compethtion

and the part-time clubs both know the higher they can finish,

the better the prize money.

So there was still plenty at stake.

And after a physical start, it was Batley

who broke the deadlock.

Shaun Squires hacked a loosd ball into space and Wayne Reittid charged

onto it to touch down.

Featherstone responded well, though, and when Danny Craven launched

a high ball in difficult conditions, Luke Briscoe took advantage

of a mistake in the defence to level the scores.

It stayed that way until just before half-time, when Featherstond shipped

the ball wide and Ian Hardm`n fed James Duckworth, who

scored in the corner.

Again the conversion was missed but Rovers were ahead.

They weren't the final points of the half, though,

as just as the hooter sounded, Dominic Brambani

slotted over a drop goal.

How crucial would that provd to be?

And as Batley closed the gap with a penalty in the second half,

Featherstone turned down two chances of their own,

so when Wayne Reittie scored his second try of thd game,

it edged the Bulldogs in front and ultimately proved enough

to win it.

Fantastic for Batley to get off the bottom, get two points,

and financially quite a big deal for them - if you finish

seventh, you get a lot more than finishing eighth?

Yeah, I think it means they're secure for a good few years now

with the way they finished and managed to get into

the qualifying eight, and I think you've got to credit

Batley and John Kear and thd players for how well they've done this year

on an extremely limited budget.

And, as you say, set for a good while.

I mean, financially for thel, making the qualifiers has bden

a huge deal, hasn't it?

Yeah, it's massive.

It's massive for Batley and how they go on in the future.

For me, I always question, is it money best well

spent within our game?

And no disrespect to Batley, but sometimes you think we need

to kind of increase our spend up in the top division.

Interesting point - I'm not sure we've got long enough

to go into that one!

That's a Super League two in the making!

Huddersfield defensively will be much more pleased, won't thdy,

with how they went against London, holding London scoreless

for an hour?

Yeah, always pleasing to nil your opposition.

But...again, Huddersfield fhnd themselves in a tough posithon.

But from that game, they'll be buoyed by the result and will be

hoping to kick on.

Leigh away on Saturday - that's going to be a big gale

for Huddersfield, isn't it?

And for Leigh, obviously?

Yeah, two teams now obviously..

With Leigh pushing right up the table and Huddersfield needing

points, it takes it up for a big, big game.

Certainly the qualifiers ard dishing up some interesting stuff.

So, the Super 8s are past the halfway stage, and here's how

they stand in the qualifiers.

Still three weeks to go, but Leeds, Leigh and Huddersfield occupy

the all-important top three places.

As it stands, they'll be in Super League next season and Hull

KR would meet London in the Million Pound game.

But watch this space.

Are you a little like an Olxmpian with a medal, that you keep looking

at it and just thinking, "Is that really ours?"

Yeah, that's probably a good comparison.

It's been a great week.

This last week was an incredible day for not only myself,

but obviously the club and your family and

all the supporters.

It was just a really, really good day.

And the homecoming - that was incredible.

Thousands and thousands turned out for you.

Yeah, I think 22,000, 23,000 people in Hull.

Yeah, brilliant - brilliant to see so many people and like I s`y,

it's been a long time coming.

You know, there's people th`t were unfortunately not therd to see

the game because it's been that long, us winning that

trophy there at Wembley.

And very proud to be the captain of a club that got to

lift the trophy there.

And for you personally, to finally get your hands on it -

what was that like?

Yeah, brilliant.

It's been a long time coming, like I said, it's one that's

eluded me throughout my carder.

Two losses previous to this.

And it certainly drives...

At my age, with the way things had gone the previous season,

I'm not sure I'd given up hope a little bit,

but this year we've obviously given ourselves an opportunity

for all three pieces of sliverware and to get the monkey off

the back and get that first one out the way,

it was really, really pleashng.

And is there a particular moment, a particular memory that

will live with you forever, do you think?

Stood on that balcony lifting that cup and...

Erm, it's something you dre`m of.

It is really a dream come true.

As a young lad, you know, watching the Challenge Cup...

I'd have been pleased just playing in the curtain-raiser

before the game!

To get the opportunity to play in the game, and not only that,

lift the Challenge Cup in front of 70,000-odd people really

is a dream come true.

Jamie, was one of the things we d been hoping for for so long

was a classic final at the new Wembley.

It was an absolute classic and I think both sides came out

of the final with great credit.

I think it was a great game for people who really love

the Rugby League and understand all the little nuances about it

and I think it was a great game for people who perhaps only tune

in every now and then to watch the game.

They could see how much it leant to both sides, and you do

need two good sides to contribute to a great Final.

It certainly was that and I think any game that

goes into the back end, the last ten minutes,

where it's undecided, and each team is there

fighting for it.

Gaz, you were speaking earlher about how much every action meant

as a player and how difficult it was as a player to try and win.

I thought it was an incredible spectacle for the game.

And as Danny Houghton was rtnning back to make "that tackle",

to stop that try, I mean, as other players, do you just watch

and pray he gets there?

Yeah, at that moment, you're just hoping that he does

but it's not surprising that he did.

He comes up with those sort of plays all the time.

He's an absolute machine in the middle for us

and at the weekend it showed we really miss him

when he's not out there, and thankfully he's a very

durable player as well, so we get to see him most wdeks

And for the club, obviously a huge, huge moment.

At what point can you just put it to one side and concentrate

on the rest of the season, though?

We have to sort of do that right away.

Obviously last week's game...

Not a write-off but we went into the game with a good tdam that

had the potential to win thd game and we came out with some credit

but not the two points that we wanted, so now it's about,

as you say, moving on.

We've got Wigan this week.

Almost a win against them would almost cement us in the top

two with our points difference, so some big games coming up for us

now and we need to sort of refocus and get that feeling

that we had last week.

There's only one way of getting that back and that's by winning something

at the end of the year as wdll.

Well, let's take a look at what you got up to.

One trophy down and two to go for Hull FC, and their quest

to finish on top of the Supdr League table continued at St Helens.

Gareth was one of seven plaxers rested from their Wembley lhne-up,

but backing up for us is Dave Woods.

What a big weekend they're having!

I think we've probably covered off Hull and I thought Lee Radford's

comment that quite a lot of the players had rolled

out the pub on Tuesday possibly summed up.

They did well to do what thdy did, quite frankly, out there.

What did you make of St Heldns?

I thought they were scratchx.

I thought Kieran, when he spoke afterwards about the

performance, was nailed on.

I watched the game and for five minutes they looked

like a good side.

They'd kick, chase hard and defend well, and be aggressive,

then for ten minutes they'd be all over the place,

and if they're serious about getting to the Grand Final, they nedd to fix

that pretty quickly.

What do you think's been the missing link?

It's a difficult question, that

I think getting hammered by Wigan looks to have

hurt them a little bit.

And I just think they need to be more consistent in what thex're

doing within the game, because they can do it for ` short

period but at the back end of the year you've got to bd able

to do it for a sustained period within a game play well.

And you and the rest of the gang back for Wigan?

Yeah, we will be all back I think this week and I think there's a few

incidents in the game where you could just tell

that we were missing a few key personnel and it probably cost us

in the game, but, yeah, real pleasing to be back out

there on Friday.

So defeat for the Challenge Cup winners, but what

about the runners-up?

Warrington left for Catalans on Sunday morning and were hoping

to be on top of the table by the time they made

their return journey.

The commentator is Tim Steere.

Toby King is there at acting half-back.

He's managed to break through the line

as well for Warrington.

And he plays it for Declan Patton.

Patton is starting to celebrate already because he knows

he's going to put that one down and give Warrington

the lead in Perpignan.

Were you surprised to see them go there and get that win?

I think only the people in Warrington believed

they could go and win the g`me.

I think it's a hell of a win for Warrington.

And credit to the club, and credit

to the players and Tony Smith to be able to get themselves up

after losing such a tight g`me, a game which they could havd won

right at the death, to go to Catalans, which is a difficult

place to play anyway and win.

And full credit to them.

And for Ben Currie, obviously, he had the heartbreak

of being tackled by Danny Houghton.

For him to come up with the late winning try, I mean,

just for him moving forward, how important is that?

Yeah, it was a big play for him, obviously.

I didn't feel sorry for him the week before!

No way!

But yeah, obviously, he's a great player and a great talent,

and someone who's got a verx bright future ahead of him.

I'm sure he'll get many more opportunities.

And they made a lot of changes as well.

A lot of young players coming through,

which is good for the game.

You've had it with these yotng home-grown players coming

through your academies.

Yeah, it's great to see, really great to see.

You know, these young lads coming through and giving them

an opportunity to perform at the highest level.

Like JP said, it's a tough place to go, is Catalans.

I probably expected a littld bit more from Catalans.

Especially after losing pretty heavily two weeks ago,

I thought they would have come out all guns firing.

But credit to Warrington, I thought they did a really

good job over there.

Is there anything left to s`y about Catalans, whose season has

sort of petered out, hasn't it?

The same again as last year.

They petered out again last year.

They started the year on fire.

And the amount of talent thdy've got in the squad, it's a disappointing.

way to finish the season.

What is it, nine out of ten, they've lost?

They need to regroup and regather again for next year.

Widnes went to the top of Super League when they won

at Wigan back in March.

The Vikings were at the DW Stadium again on Thursdax.

I think Wigan is one of the most difficult places to go and win.

It's wonderful to see that club growing.

But, yeah, I'm sure they'll be happy with how things have gone this year.

And defensively here, they're down to 11 men

This was some effort from them, wasn't it?

Yeah, huge effort.

And it just shows you that resilience and desire.

You know, we talk a lot about coaching points

and things like that, but that was just desire.

That was just about them wanting to stop Wigan crossing the line

And how worried do you think Sean will be?

I mean, he was very angry after it, but they hammered St Helens

a couple of weeks ago.

It was a good result against St Helens, but they need

to be beating Widnes if they want to be a genuind threat

at the end of the year.

I expect there will be a backlash, in terms of performance

against yourselves.

You'll be expecting that.

But it's a game they needed to win.

And when you're looking at their total, at the struggle

they seem to have in scoring points in some games?

Well, for us, it's obviouslx defending what they do well.

They've got some real talented players.

Because you do know what Wigan are going to do.

they're the ones that sort of really cause you real problems,

because they go out of the box a little bit and play away

from those structures that they ve been doing for so long.
