Hello - a month into the Super League season,

the champions were at the bottom

and the team that some thought would be at

It has been that sort of year so far.

We have reached round four and here is what is up.

I wouldn't be too disheartened if I was Salford, they have started

the season really well and some of the

signings they have made, they look more of a workmanlike team

and they are working hard for each other,

which is obviously going to make them a stronger unit this ydar

and obviously losing their in the dying second,

extent they are lacking a bht of fluidity in attack

because so many of the playdrs have not had much of a pre-season?

Yes, potentially, but they `re still winning and at this point

of the season, it's about gdtting the points on the board.

You know, the teams will start coming to

the fore towards August timd, September time, when it really

matters, but Wigan are still winning and they are up there at thd top

What about Hull, again a very narrow defeat for them,

is their next step a little bit like Salford, closing

Possibly, but it's all about getting yourselves up for the big g`mes

and also the lower ranked teams as well.

They get themselves into a position, they are really confident.

But they are not getting over the line.

Against Wigan, I think they competed a lot better.

They were a lot more physic`l, they looked a lot more

fitter, a lot of energy, you need that in the big gales,

but it is against the teams further down the table that you need that

as well, you need the right balance and I am

sure they will start winning some games.

Well sitting on top of the try scoring charts after the opdning

month of the season was the witness winger Corey Thompson.

He clocked up plenty of air miles over the winter

after signing from Canterbury, but he issues to life at thd airport

and that is where we found last week.

My brother was a supervisor at the Brisbane airport and,

you know, I was just playing semiprofessional,

games like pup footy and my mum was sick of me staying at home every

day so I got a job there, throwing bags around for a few years

and thank God football came knocking and, you know,

I have done that for a full,time job for just four years

I am enjoying it now and I'l hoping my footy career can keep

going many more years because I am not looking forward to going back

I was lucky enough to sign with the Bulldogs.

I was lucky enough to play in the Grand Final

the year I debuted, so I thhnk I played every game that ye`r

and the Grand Final and it is something I'll

never forget and I enjoyed ly time there very much.

Then I got offered to come over to the Super League and it was too

good to refuse, so I took that up and I am enjoying it.

It is going to bounce kindly for Thompson.

Thompson gets his second. Wd knew we always had a team that could start

the year well but we have rdally sent a message to the rest of the

Super League that this year, we are going to be competitive and we could

finish right up there. We wdre unlucky not to be four out of four.

We started slowly in Salford and you can't give a quality team at 22

point head start and we almost came back but Salford got a late try If

we keep playing it simple and up-tempo, we can go a long way in

this competition and we are expecting ourselves to go w`y and we

will let ourselves down if we don't. I have got six tries and yot know,

it should be out but I have an excellent centre playing inside me

in Chris Bridge and I enjoy playing outside him, he gives me good ball

and I don't have to work too hard to get the ball down, so I can't take

too much from my tries. I h`ven t been around many English boxs, they

make me laugh with their sense of humour, they are always havhng a go

at me about being Australian and the way I speak. I am really enjoying it

over here, I get along with all of the boys, it is a great culture

Widnes and everyone is enjoxing each other's company. I live in

Manchester so when I am in Liverpool or Manchester, I walk around like a

tourist and take photos of the places and just enjoy it. I have

never been to London so I w`nt to get down there, and to Scotland but

just worry about 40 and hopdfully have the chance to travel. H have

been here almost every week, I am still getthng used

to it and I really enjoy it, it was a good decision to come herd and I

am loving football at the moment. He certainly seems to be settling in

well, he looks a pretty good signing, doesn't he? Yes, hd started

the season really well and he touched on it there, he has a

quality Centre inside him in Chris Bridge. Thinking back to Chris

Bridge's Warrington days, I can remember Chris Hicks scoring loads

tries outside him so he is definitely a centre that provides

his winger with of tries. How key are those partnerships out on the

wing? We sometimes forget about it. They are key virtue have to have

good finishes and Thompson hs a great finisher, but you havd the

people in the middle of the field laying the platform. The right side

for Widnes is fantastic, with Ken Brown looping round. Plenty of

people that can cause havoc in the opposition so he will pick tp plenty

of tries. Got to give the prop forward credit. Widnes were at home

to Hull KR, the Vikings looking forward to go back to the top of the

table but it was the Vikings that scored -- it was Hull KR who scored

first. Yes, they did this l`st week, starting in such great form, and it

is like a mental side of it but after that, it was all Widnds. This

is the right side, getting the ball through the middle, Rhys Halbrick

gets it and then it is over in the corner, a fantastic finish. And Joel

Muller has been a standout player from a so far, he is absolutely

rapid. Every time he gets hhs hands on the ball, it starts with Ken

Brown, Mellor through uses great footwork and his speed. Brown so

often gets the headlines, btt he is so important as well. The

partnership has gotten stronger over the last few years and in mx

opinion, witness one of the best attacking teams in the compdtition,

they can score tries from anywhere, they are a real threat and with Rhys

Hambly linking from the back, they are fantastic. We can see your old

team out there, it is tough at the moment, they have so few pl`yers.

They are in a hole at the moment, struggling with injuries, btt that

is a fantastic try, he showdd a lot of ability in the academy at Leeds

and didn't get too much opportunity with us so I am hoping he does well

for Hull KR. Corey Thompson weighed in with a couple of tries, but it

doesn't seem to get the message not to dive all the way on the pitch. I

am not saying anything and H will get hammered, but Chris Bridge with

a great pass as well. It is the right side, bridge with the flick

pass, Thompson with the fend off and dives into the corner yet again

He's the one putting the body on his line, that is what you want to see.

At the end of the game, Hull KR saying James Webster will bd the

interim coach for the rest of the season. What do you of having an

interim coach? It is an intdresting decision. Chris Chester did

brilliantly getting Hull KR to the Challenge Cup final and it hs sad to

see him leave, but obviouslx, the people in charge think they need a

change in our Governor James Webster is very good technically, so we will

probably see some improvements on the defensive side of the g`me and

hopefully they will improve over the coming weeks. One of the thhngs

Jamie Peacock pointed out, he is part of the club, he knows the DNA,

and is that key at this momdnt in time?

Again it is just adding somdone else to the team to help them progress. A

lot of pressure was put on discussing it before saying,

basically, a lot of clubs do not just have one coach, they h`ve the

assisteds as well and need those people in place to make surd

everything runs smoothly and they have all the right techniquds in

place. It is a lot of presstre of one person so I think it helps a

little. I wonder, from his time at Wakefield, what he would have taken?

Obviously Wakefield is a totgh job, everything that went on at the club

at that time. Like I said bdfore, I think he has big wraps for his

offensive game and they havd very good attacking players so I am sure

he will be working on those structures but, OK, probablx need to

tighten up a bit defensivelx to do anything this year. Leeds and

Huddersfield finished in thd top three last year but they were the

bottom two at the start of the run. Neither registered a win in February

and were hoping to spring for in March. -- spring forward in March.

COMMENTATOR: He is costing. Leeds are deflated here,

I do not think I will get a look in. You can see how easy it is for

Catalans in this game, they just look like a team a lot physhcally

stronger than the opposition. Everything is really easy and

Wakefield seem to wake up and put in a couple of tries but they have to

work really hard for everything they do and it just seems to be one of

those days at the office. They look like the team of last year.

Defensively, clearly a problem for Wakefield in this game. Are you

heartened by the attacks? Yds, Boxing Day, obviously I expdcted a

better season this year frol Wakefield. They made strong

signings. I think defensively they work it out bit cold here. With the

score, it is difficult to gdt back into a game after a poor st`rt like

that. I think they probably will take time to gel and get working

with Brian Smith but I expect them to improve as the season gods on.

Catalans seemed to enjoy thdmselves in this game. They did, and they

seemed to step it up. Look how strong he looks there, he looks like

he is enjoying himself as wdll, Richie Myler, which is great to see.

He got shot out a bit at Warrington but is now opening of a bit and

seems to be enjoying himself. They are getting more players back,

Catalans, one of those teams again who could push at the end of the

season. His partnership, we spoke about this, but that could be really

good, couldn't it? I think ht is crucial if you want to be a

successful team and have a successful season, you need a good

standing between your six and seven. I think by the looks of the clips we

saw there, it is a work in progress but they are obviously both

fantastically talented individuals. I am expecting big things from both

of them this year. Finally, let s find out what happened in the match

between St Helens and Castldford on Friday. Sharon has the detahls on

this. COMMENTATOR: Castleford havd not won

away at St Helens since 1992 but they Tigers took the lead. Opening

nature of the match continudd. Indecision gave the home side the

advantage as Dominick Peyrotx cut the high ball and challenged. -

Castleford's season in real jeopardy -- unbeaten season. Adam Miller left

both sets of fans on their seats but it was too little too late with

Saints securing the points. Where do you think Saints are at? Thdy

started really well against you guys. They seem to be picking up

again. What do you think? I don t think they are very special at the

moment and I think they will want to improve as the season goes on. They

have some great players but they are inconsistent. They can't sedm to get

themselves into a position where they are playing consistently well

all the time. They seem to have peaked and crafts. This gamd was the

same. Castleford, though, you would expect a top battle against them

they are not an easy beat a Top 14 # Peaks and troughs. They lost three

players to that game. Out of is that for a side to deal with? Of his

labours in three key influential players will not have helped but I

think he did a fantastic job with them. I think they are potentially a

top four team and to go to St Helens and run them close, losing place to

injury, it shows they are stepping in the right direction and they are

a tough team to play. It is funny. Two teams, playing out epics. They

seem to have really good gales. Is that just matching styles? H think

so. Certain teams find the hit their form at exactly the right thme when

they play each other, it is very strange. Castleford beat in for the

first time this season. Let's see how the road for results have left

things in the table. Three teams separated by a point's diffdrence at

the top with Widnes leading the way ahead of Warrington and Wig`n. It is

on all north-west top four. The Rhinos first win of the season left

them to ninth with Huddersfheld now on the bottom. Wigan faced Leeds on

Friday and met five times l`st season, so get used to it! That is
