Hello and a very warm welcome to Fort William, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
where the best mountain bikers in the world | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
come to show us what they're made of. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
It's going to be a white knuckle roller coaster ride | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
with competitors pushing themselves to their limit. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
What a fabulous weekend of racing we have ahead of us. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
We've got the fantastic combative 4X, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
and five kilometres of super-fast downhill action in Fort William. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
But that is not all. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
We'll also be heading just down the road to meet some enterprising | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
young film-makers who have been making a name for themselves. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
We thought at first that I was going to be quite scared | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
staying in the hut alone | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
but, in actual fact, it was quite amazing. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
We'll be finding out what it's like for young riders keen to | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
make their mark here in Fort William. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
People are cheering, and it's really noticeable. It feels like... | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
It's almost like a wall of sound. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
It's just crazy. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
And I'll be climbing a hill in the Western Highlands | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
that I think is one of the finest mountains in the whole of Scotland. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
That is all to come. We're going to start with the gladiatorial 4X, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
where racers ride on a specially designed, super technical course. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
There's sure to be lots of bumps and bruises on this one. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
-Oh, my goodness me! -You're racing there with no mercy, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
so you have to hit somebody a little bit, and use your shoulders. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
It's only one pedal in, and from that moment on it's a lot of rocks. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:50
A rough track. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
Pretty loose at the moment because of the dry weather that we have, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
but it's a fun track. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
In this discipline, four riders battle it out head-to-head, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
going flat out from top to bottom | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
with the top two going through to the next round. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
It's a tough race for tough riders. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
We're going to start off with the women's event, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
and there's real interest from a British point of view | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
with Katy Curd, who already won the Williamsburg 4X last month. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
But she'll be up against tough opposition | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
from the Netherlands, Anneke Beerten, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
and, from France, Celine Gros. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
I would like to be fast and have a good result in 4X. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:27
So I will do my best, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
and, well, I will see. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
It's a real mountain bike track, 4X. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
It's my best track, the best event of the year. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
Celine Gros is one of the strongest racers on the circuit, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
but she's up against some tough competition, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
not least from the Brits. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
A lot of tracks are based on power straight out of the gates, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
but this is really technical. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
So it's one pedal stroke out the gate, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:55
then it's into some really technical jumps. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
So it's... Yeah, it's one that suits me a lot more. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
Obviously it's a very short race, 4X. It's pretty gladiatorial. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
But are you aware of the noise the crowd make? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Because as soon as there's a Brit rider up, they go mental. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
They do, they go wild when you arrive at the finish arena as well. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
It's...it's... Yeah, it's just crazy. It's amazing. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
We're joining the competition for the women's semifinals. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
In the first heat, on the far left, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
is 28-year-old Steffi Marth from Germany. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Next to her is Britain's top female 4X racer, Katy Curd. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Then there's the Swiss rider, Lucia Oetjen. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
And finishing up the quartet in green is another strong Brit - | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
Suzanne Lacey. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
And they're off out the gate, over the first bumps. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
And already Katy's taken the lead, but Lucia Oetjen close behind. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
Suzanne Lacey currently last. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
Katy loves this course at Fort William. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
The technical riding really suits her style. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
Looking good for her just now. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Heading down towards the rock garden, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
and she's still in the lead with Lucia Oetjen second, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Steffi Marth next. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
Katy dominating this heat. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
This will be a real confidence boost for her. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Battle now is for second place. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
It's the top two who go through to the final. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Round the last corner, down to the finish. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
Katy is way ahead of her rivals. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
Comfortably over the line in first. Who's second, though? | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Lucia Oetjen behind her. They'll go through to the final. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
Suzanne Lacey and Steffi Marth are out. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
So lining up for the second semifinal is a strong rider | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
from Australia, Caroline Buchanan. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Next to her, a real veteran of the sport, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
Anneke Beerten from the Netherlands. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
Then there's Helene Fruhwirth from Austria. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
And finally Celine Gros from France. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
All eyes on the gate. There it is. It's off. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
It's Anneke Beerten out first, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
but Caroline Buchanan pushed ahead and is now in the lead. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
Disappointing start, though, for Celine Gros. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Buchanan's powering ahead over the first humps and bumps. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
Getting a good start so important. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
But look at this into the rock garden. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
Gros had a fantastic ride there. She's now out in front. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
She came second here last year, so she's giving it everything today. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
Caroline Buchanan still holding on to second place | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
in a tough battle with Anneke Beerten. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
So down into the final stretch, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
Celine Gros crosses the line first with Caroline Buchanan second. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
So they're through to the finals. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
The race is over, though, for Fruhwirth and Beerten. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
So this is it, the final of the 2013 women's 4X. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
Up at the start gate on the far left, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
it's Australia's Caroline Buchanan. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
Then our very own Katy Curd. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Next to her, Lucia Oetjen from Switzerland. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
And finally, France's Celine Gros. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
Shoulder to shoulder out the gate and over the first humps. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
And it's Buchanan and Curd in front! | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Katy Curd challenging here, but Buchanan's leading it out. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
Under pressure from the British rider, though. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
These two now neck-and-neck | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
with Celine Gros and Lucia Oetjen battling it out for third. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
So down towards the rock garden, and it's Katy Curd really going for it. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
So much skill in this sport - riders need to be both precise and fast. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
And this is it, the British girl leading the field | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
round the last corner, down to the final straight. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
She's going to make it! | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
Yes, Katy Curd has won the Fort William 4X! | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
Fantastic. Behind her Buchanan, Oetjen third. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
But just look what that means to Katy Curd. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
My goodness. She looks surprised, but very, very happy. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
I feel over the moon. I can't believe it, you know? | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
I knew Caroline was going to have a really good start, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
so I chose second gate just to try and get the outside | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
to carry some speed. And then... | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Yeah, I just can't believe it. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
That was an incredible move to get into the front there. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
I thought she would leave it a little bit wide - | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
it's quite hard to go inside, so I just thought I'd go for it. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
I had a big drift on just coming into the rocks, but I held on to it. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
Winning on a home course must be brilliant. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
Oh, it feels so good. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
As I say, I've worked so hard for this and it's... | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
It's been a massive goal of mine, so, just... Yeah, so, so happy. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
So, confirmation of those final results. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
Fourth place goes to Celine Gros from France | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
with Switzerland's Lucia Oetjen taking third. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
Caroline Buchanan's in second place, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
but the winner here today is Katy Curd from Great Britain. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
What an amazing result there for Katy Curd. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
The first ever British women's winner | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
of the 4X here in Fort William. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
In the men's 4X, we have got the strong Czech contingent | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
of Prokop and Slavik and Britain's hopeful, Scott Beaumont. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
If you can get away from the start leading, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
you're in a great position in any 4X race. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
If you can sort of dominate and lead from the front, | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
it's a great place to be. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:41
The most technical part of this track, however, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
remains the rock section. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
That's where, firstly, you have to negotiate the rocks. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
Second, you have three guys around you trying to knock you off, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
get past you and everything else they're trying to do. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
Thirdly, you want to avoid punctures. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:54
If you can get away from the punctures and not have a mechanical | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
on your bike going down those rocks, then you should be home and dry. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
This is the weekend the world's best riders come to Fort William. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
Right now for the men, the Czechs are at the top of the sport, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
with Tomas Slavik ranked number one. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
But he's never won here. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
You know, it's so hard to do a decent run on this track. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
The track, the surface is so loose, so you never know. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Sometimes you make the turn at the same speed as you did before | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
and it's not slipping. But then, just, you're lying on the ground. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
So that's a pretty hard thing about this track - to predict | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
what's going to happen. I've always had bad luck here. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
It's one of the best events in our World Cup circuit. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
I would love to win on this track | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
and I would love to be here standing on a first spot. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
Last year it didn't work out for me. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
We're picking up the action in the men's race for the first semifinal. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
On the far left, young British rider Isaac Mundy. Just 19 years old. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
He's up against Quentin Derbier from France. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
And the two top Czech riders, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
Tomas Slavik with last year's winner here at Fort William, Michal Prokop. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:03
And they're off. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:04
Oh, that's not a good start for Mundy, though. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
He's trailing behind the other three. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
Slavik into the lead with Derbier | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
and Prokop battling for second. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
The fastest get down this course in under 40 seconds. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
Tomas Slavik currently going full pelt. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
He just loves riding 4X and has built his own track at home. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
It's so steep, you almost don't need to pedal. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
Just brake and hit the jumps at over 60 kilometres per hour. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
Around the last bend and down to the final straight, it's Slavik going to | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
cross the line first with his fellow Czech, Michael Prokop safely | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
through in second place. They're through to the finals. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
Derbier and Mundy are out. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
In the second men's semifinal, another Slavik to watch out for. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
This time it's 24-year-old Hannes Slavik from Austria. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
Next to him is the Swiss rider, David Graf. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
Then it's the British best hope, Scott Beaumont. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
Finally, Joseph Vejvoda from Austria. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
And they're off. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:03
Once again, neck-and-neck as they head over the first bumps. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
Oh, a skid there from Vejvoda as he tries to cross | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
over to the inside line. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
And it's David Graf taking the lead from Scott Beaumont. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
Scott looking comfortable in second place. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
If he can stay there, he'll be through. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
They head into the most technical section of the course - | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
the rock garden. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:22
Now Scott's been at the forefront of this sport from the very start, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
so let's hope his experience pays off today. Round the final bend. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
Beaumont's under pressure. No! | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
Austria's Hannes Slavik cranked up his speed, now ahead of Beaumont. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
So crossing the line it's David Graf first, | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
Hannes Slavik second. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:38
They'll go through to the finals, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
but there's no chance of a podium this year for Scott Beaumont. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Disappointing for him. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
So in the gate, ready for the final of this year's 4X competition, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
are Hannes Slavik from Austria. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
Next to him is the Swiss rider David Graf. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
Then there's the two Czech rivals, Tomas Slavik and Michal Prokop. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
Gate down and they're off. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
Very even as they head down. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
But Tomas Slavik taking an early lead. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
Prokop hard behind on the inside line. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
But it's Slavik ahead. Glances behind. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
He's never come first here and so wants to take this win. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
Such a fierce competitor. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:23
He studied sport and nutrition at university, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
but for him, 4X is all about having fun. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
"If you don't have fun," he says, "you just don't go fast." | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
Well, he's certainly going fast today as he comes into that | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
final bend. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
Behind him, Prokop is in second place with Graf in third. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
But it's Tomas Slavik over the line first, | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
and that will mean the world to him. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
It was my goal for this season, like winning the Worlds and definitely to | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
take the win, of course, in the 4X Pro Tour series, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
but winning in Fort William it's always, like, twice as big. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
So the final results look like this - | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
in fourth is Hannes Slavik from Austria, | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
with third place going to Switzerland's David Graf. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
Czech rider Michal Prokop comes in second, | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
but taking the win is Tomas Slavik. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
What a fantastic result for him. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
When I look back in the day, in the past, | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
I was just dreaming about winning in Fort William. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
This year it finally worked out, and I'm unbelievably stoked. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
It means for me, like, another title of a world champion. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
You know, the crowd, the track, | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
everything, it just makes one big thing that I'm really stoked from. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:30
Well, congratulations to Tomas Slavik, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
finally topping the podium here at Fort William. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
Now we're going to take a short break from the action, | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
but we're heading just down the road to meet some local film-makers | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
who have been making something of a name for themselves. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
Mountain biking is all about adventure, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
but it also offers opportunity for great photography and film-making. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
Earlier this year, the annual Fort William Mountain Festival ran | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
a competition looking for the best movies on offer. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
Entries came from all over the world, but some of the best and | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
most exciting came from young people living right here in Lochaber. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
FOLK MUSIC | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
Fort William is probably the best place for training | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
in a variety of tracks. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
The training part of it is that the weather changes every day | 0:13:21 | 0:13:26
or twice a day or something like that. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
It definitely makes it good for all kinds of conditions. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
The track also has a bit of everything in it - | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
from rocks to roots to jumps. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
It's pretty ideal. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:38
Downhill At Nevis Range was filmed and edited by Andrew Ashworth. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
And this song created by the Loch Lomond-based band | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
Have Mercy Las Vegas. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
In an intensive day, Andrew and Keir Coupland shot the whole film | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
in one run down the World Cup course. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
We brought two cameras with us. We had one that was stationary, | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
and we'd have one that Andrew would hold that was following me around. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
And, em... | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
We'd do the shots, decide if we liked it or not, | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
decide if it was a good idea, decide if we could improve it. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
Every part of the course he wanted to film, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
if he didn't think the shot was quite what it could have been or | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
if he wanted to do it again to confirm that, I'd push up a | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
little bit up again, get back to the stuff where I can get my speed up. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
If he got a great shot and thought, "Oh, that's good," I thought, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
"No, maybe I could have rode that a bit faster." | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Or, "Keir, that was good, | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
"but I didn't quite get the angle I wanted to get it." | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
So we'd push up, we'd get it | 0:14:34 | 0:14:35
and we'd perfect it to the standard that we thought was good enough. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
And then you'd move on. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:40
That would just be the whole process going down the hill. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
But I definitely was pretty tired after making it! | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
Being here, it's just like a massive playground to me. It's just endless. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:53
Endless amounts of trails and mountain biking to do. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
Not just any of the trails that we filmed. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:59
There's so much more for any kind of riding that you want to do. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
And just being...living here in the outdoor capital of the UK, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
it's just so amazing. I absolutely love living here. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:10
I couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else as a mountain biker. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
Oh! | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16 | |
That was not as fun. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:17
When you're going downhill, it's like you go fast but you don't hurry. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:22
Because you don't want to get ahead of yourself | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
when you're riding a downhill bike. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:25
If you get ahead of yourself, especially when you're racing, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
it's a big mistake and you'll end up having a slower time. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
I get inspired going to the World Cup. And I just... | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
It makes me want to be a professional mountain biker more than | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
anything in the world. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:39
This area is not just known for its mountain biking. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
For nearly a decade, the Fort William Mountain Festival has | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
celebrated all aspects of life and the environment here. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
This film about the Glencoe Ski Centre shows just how | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
evocative this landscape is. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
The community is the strength on that hill, | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
and that's what holds it together. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
I'm inspired by the fact that it's non-commercialised. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
I love the fact that the signs are hand-written. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
It's a photographer's dream up there. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
It's a living museum, basically. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
I just hope that's a lot of it can... | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
I hope that it can survive in the future | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
and that a lot of the old equipment that they've got can be placed | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
into some sort of historic museum as the start | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
of the British skiing industry, really. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
This film, Meall A' Bhuiridh, was made by Misha Somerville, | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
and the music created by Barry Reid. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
The inspiration for the project, however, came from Jen Wilcox. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:41
She started photographing the area in 2009 | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
as part of her degree submission. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
This was a period of uncertainty for the ski centre, | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
as it moved from the threat of closure to a more secure future | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
under its new owner, Andy Meldrum. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
I didn't know the outcome and they didn't know the outcome. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
And in 2010...Andy came and bought the centre over, | 0:16:58 | 0:17:04
and they had the most amazing season that they've had in decades. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
So it looked stunning for photographic images, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
because everything was white and everything | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
because very illustrative and graphic, actually. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:17
The project turned from looking at an industry that was closing, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
I guess, into then looking at its history | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
and starting to look at the land in a very different way. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
And realising what an amazing community is on the hill as well. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:33
-How are you doing? -I'm OK. How are you? | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
When I was speaking to ski patrol about the project | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
I was doing with the art school, they basically said, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
"Well, you'd be welcome to use the hut." | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
And I was very, very grateful for this. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
And I...thought at first that I was going to be quite scared | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
staying in alone but, in actual fact, it was quite amazing. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
I used to wake up through the night | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
and there was deer just surrounding the hut. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:03
And it was quite a special moment on quite a few occasions. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
And it was a great base to go up and take photographs on the hill. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
The hills and the history, | 0:18:12 | 0:18:13
there's thousands of stories that you could focus on about Glencoe. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
Our congratulations to everyone involved in these | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
award-winning films. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
And for more about the Fort William Mountain Festival, follow us | 0:18:23 | 0:18:27
on Facebook and become part of the bigger adventure show community. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
Right now, though, it's back to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
Welcome back here to the action in Fort William, | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
where we will soon be catching up with the women's Downhill World Cup. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
But firstly we are going to meet a young Scots rider called | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
Lachlan Blair. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
He is starting his journey as a professional World Cup rider | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
and he is competing today in the junior part of the World Cup event. | 0:18:56 | 0:19:01
I feel a bit nervous, I suppose. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
But I'm going to try and just ignore it. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
Just pretend I was just coming up for a practice of a race run. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
Just try and ignore the people, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:10
and then enjoy it after I cross the line, hopefully. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
Lachlan lives just down the road in Fort William and he's been | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
a spectator at ever World Cup race since it first came here in 2002. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:22
If it wasn't for his mother, though, | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
he wouldn't be a competitive biker today. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
It was she who brought him here in the first place. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
I had to work at the first World Cup in the catering, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
because I work at Nevis Range in the winter and they drafted me in. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
He was just six. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
And after that time he was always keen on jumping through the air | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
-on his bike. -SHE LAUGHS | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
He made a bike that he could use on his trampoline | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
and do all sorts of tricks and everything. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
And then when he got a little bit older, maybe about ten or something, | 0:19:53 | 0:19:58
he saved up and bought a bike that he could use on the downhill track. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:03
CAR HORN BEEPS | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
Got a cheap second-hand bike, started doing the Scottish series. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
And then... Pretty terrible. Like, I was not good. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
But since then I've just done little bits of training, and then I got... | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
I just sort of got more focused about trying to just do a bit better | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
and a bit better every year. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
And then last year I had a fairly good season. I was going quite well. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:28
I was just... | 0:20:28 | 0:20:29
Won my first Scottish race. Placed in the top ten at the nationals. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:34
Didn't know if I was going to get a jersey for the World Cup or not, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
but...excitingly enough, I did get a jersey. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
So I'm racing, and that's just brilliant. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:45
It's like a wee childhood dream come true getting to go up there. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:49
Just be alongside all the top riders. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
It's just really exciting. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
And we'll find out how Lachlan gets on later in the programme. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
In spite of all the excitement and atmosphere that surrounds downhill | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
racing, it's not as highly regarded as road biking or cross-country. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
This is something that the president of British Cycling, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
Brian Cookson, wants to change. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
Downhilling in particular is not in the Olympics, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
and so it is very difficult for us to channel any funding into it, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
because the majority of our funding comes from the lottery | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
and it's specifically for the Olympic disciplines. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
One of the things that I'd really like to try to do is to push for | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
downhilling to go into the Olympics, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:28
because it's an absolutely fantastic discipline. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
Certainly 4X as well is really exciting to watch, and so on. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
It's exactly the sort of thing we should be trying to get | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
into the Olympic Games. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:38
We're seeing a lot of young Scottish riders in particular, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
but obviously young British riders too. We do well on a world stage. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
I guess the challenge for you guys is to keep encouraging that. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
Yeah, absolutely. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:48
That's one more reason why we'd like to see it in the Olympics. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
The more medals we can get, the better. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:52
That's going to be a long haul, I think, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
to get it in the Olympics, being realistic. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
But it's worth pursuing. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
Right now, though, it's time for the women's downhill, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
and it's the French riders to watch out for this time. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
Currently four of the top five are from France. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
22-year-old Myriam Nicole is ranked fourth in the world. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:12
She had a nasty crash in the qualifying heat, | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
but amazingly still managed to finish in seventh place. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
My crash... I was hoping to finish in the top five, top four maybe. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:23
You're not wearing body armour. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:24
Is it normal that people are racing without body armour these days? | 0:22:24 | 0:22:28
I don't know if it's normal. But most of the top 80 are not racing with it. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:33
In France we have to, and I can feel like it's not very good, | 0:22:33 | 0:22:39
very comfy to ride with body armour. Like, you cannot move very well. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44
You're not going too fast. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
Heading up the French entry | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
is two-time world champion Emmeline Ragot. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
She came first last year here at Fort William. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
The good thing here is, there's a lot of people - | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
people loving biking and mountain bikes, so it's pretty good. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:01
You can see, it's just the qualies, | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
there are so many people on the track already, just cheering. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
It's full-on, it's cool. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
The people in Scotland seem to like and understand mountain biking. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
Yeah, you know, they are going out whatever the weather, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
if it's raining or not. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:16
They love the sport and that's cool to see. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
Last year, Emmeline was trumped at every round except this one | 0:23:19 | 0:23:24
by Britain's Rachel Atherton. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
And Rachel is now at the top of the rankings. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
Turned up yesterday, first day of the race, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
and saw the number one plate on my bike. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
And obviously I won the series last year... | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
You don't really think about it until you turn up and that plate is there. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
It is good. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:41
You feel proud, and I guess it gives you confidence that you've done it | 0:23:41 | 0:23:45
before, so hopefully you won't be so far off the mark this year. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
How's the track looking this year? It's pretty dry. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
It's pretty gnarly. I think it's one of the roughest I've ever seen. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
I think for the girls, one of the biggest is the upper body strength. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
We're obviously not as strong as the guys and it's so physical. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
You're hitting bumps and hitting holes all the way down. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
And even though your legs are strong, your upper body is | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
so tired that you can't hold yourself up to put that power down, and that's | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
a really difficult thing to try | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
and be strong for nearly six minutes when you're going that fast. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
It's definitely a challenge but it's what we love, isn't it? | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
And there's another young British rider to watch out for - | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
Manon Carpenter from South Wales is just 20 years old | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
and already she's ranked six in the world. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
But she had a bit of a set back when she got here. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
I've had three practice runs this morning, | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
I missed practice yesterday. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:39
Unfortunately, I got food poisoning. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
So that wasn't the best start to the weekend, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
but I've had some runs this morning, trying to get back up to speed. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
I feel pretty good. I know this track well. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:49
We had a national three weeks ago, so I don't feel like | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
I've missed out too much, just trying to get some strength back. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:56
So the race is on for that top spot here in Fort William. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
Lining up at the start is French rider Myriam Nicole who had | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
that painful crash during qualification. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
Myriam Nicole, who was the French national champion in 2011, | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
started off very well, | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
winning the first race of the French Cup in Lourdes. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
Sitting down a little bit in the boardwalk, though. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
But carrying lots of speed. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:23
Very smooth...for Myriam | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
on one of the roughest courses of the year. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
Some of the European courses are a little shorter than this. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
A very slight looking figure, but phenomenal bike rider. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
Very committed. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:39
So Myriam just lining herself up, | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
trying to remember the line. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:45
Trying to keep as smooth as possible as we head down into the woods. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:49
She was third here last year at Fort William. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
Oh, my goodness me! | 0:25:54 | 0:25:55
She's 7.35 up in the second split. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
She is absolutely making mincemeat of this course. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:03
This is really, really fast indeed. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
The French are always very strong here at Fort William. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
The French and the British, for that matter. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
All that's left are French riders and British riders. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
She looks a bit heavy legged, though. Now she puts the power on. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
Now she takes some air. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
This will be fast. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
She did look a little tired just before the arch there, | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
but I'm sure she's got enough left in the pipes. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
They call her Pompon, Myriam Nicole | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
This is going to be... | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
a first place by five seconds! | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
5:24.29. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
Well, that is impressive. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:42
Very, very impressive. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
Morgane Charre, ex-world champion or world champion of 2012. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:53
She is now on the Fort William course. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
Came seventh here last year. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:58
She had a little bit of a slip and crash on the... | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
on her qualifying run. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
But here she is. No elbow pads. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
Flying down this wearing the jersey of the world champion, | 0:27:09 | 0:27:13
as Morgane heads down into the berms. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
Morgane is there looking very, | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
very quick in the upper part of the course. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
Oh, just took a big thump there off that rock, though. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:27
You can tell by the tape lining the course that the wind has | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
picked up here. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:31
Here's Morgane Charre, the world champion. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
Told me yesterday that she was surprised to win | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
the World Championship, but she is a brilliant racer, | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
there's no doubt about that. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
Wearing the rainbow jersey and putting the effort in, | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
in this bottom section of the course. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
She was almost three seconds down in the second split. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:54
But that is big air. She is flying down here. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
Won that World Championships back in September. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:01
She's had so many wins. Can she get inside? I don't think she can. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:06
It's 4.24 to beat. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:07
Oh, just outside! 5:25.49. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
Second place for the world champion. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
Look at that, she's got the shirtsleeves rolled up. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
She's hard as nails. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:18
ANNOUNCER SINGS HAPPY BIRTHDAY | 0:28:18 | 0:28:20
And it's her birthday. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:22
Manon Carpenter, the junior world champion in 2011. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:28
Currently ranked sixth as a senior rider. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
Had a bit of a bad start to her weekend here. | 0:28:31 | 0:28:33
Came down with food poisoning and missed the first training run. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:37
But at the age of 20, she is THE hope for British women's downhill. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:43
Absolutely flying here in the top part. Very strong, very committed. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:47
She's spent a great deal of the winter working on her upper body | 0:28:48 | 0:28:52
strength and sprint training, gym training, | 0:28:52 | 0:28:54
riding a road bike on the Welsh damp hills, all for this moment. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:59
So as Manon heads down towards the woods, this looks very smooth | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
and good so far. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:06
And suddenly the atmosphere in Fort William | 0:29:07 | 0:29:11
has changed as Manon Carpenter goes through the second split with | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14
a green light, well inside the time. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:18
This incredible young rider, just 20 years old, | 0:29:18 | 0:29:22
junior world champion in 2011 and truly, truly brilliant she is too. | 0:29:22 | 0:29:28
Oh, she almost made a mistake there though. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:31
That was a very, very heavy landing. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:33
Just keep it clean, Manon. | 0:29:33 | 0:29:34
Just keep it smooth and batter on down to the finish | 0:29:34 | 0:29:38
and let the crowd bring you in. | 0:29:38 | 0:29:40
Wow, what a noise! What a noise! | 0:29:40 | 0:29:43
All eyes on the clock, it's 5:24 to beat. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:47
Oh, she's going to smash it. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:49
She is going to smash it! | 0:29:49 | 0:29:51
Oh, my goodness me. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
5:18.98. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
Woo! | 0:29:56 | 0:29:57 | |
Yes, indeedy. That is amazing. | 0:29:57 | 0:30:00
That is truly sensational. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
More than five seconds inside Myriam Nicole, and that is no mean feat. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
This is Emmeline Ragot who won here last year, came first in 2012. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:16
She is the French national champion. | 0:30:16 | 0:30:19
Currently ranked number two in the world. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
Emmeline is just starting this at A pace. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:26
She came quite well behind Rachel on the qualifier, | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
but this is the battle that counts for these two. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
She looks very smooth in the upper part of the course. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:38
And the girls taking quite tight lines in some of these corners | 0:30:38 | 0:30:41
rather than slightly the wider male line, which is | 0:30:41 | 0:30:44
much tougher and harder. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:46
In fact, there's a real difference between the top two or three women | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
and then the following group. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
As Emmeline is just flying down there towards the forest. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:56
Emmeline Ragot has been world champion on two occasions, | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
but I don't think she's going to be champion in Fort William this year. | 0:31:03 | 0:31:07
She's over three seconds down on Manon Carpenter at the second split. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:12
Unless she can do something incredible on the bottom section... | 0:31:12 | 0:31:16
She is smoother than Carpenter on this section, though. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:18
There's no doubt about that. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:19
Carpenter had a big heavy landing before she fell through the arch. | 0:31:19 | 0:31:23
Ragot. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:26
She has struggled a little on World Cup, | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
but brilliant at World Championships. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:31
Let's see what she's got. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
I don't think she'll be inside. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:34
She is not going to be inside Manon Carpenter, | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
but it could be a podium finish. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
It's second. My goodness. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
5:20.21 for Emmeline Ragot. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:46
She goes into second place. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
Only one person left on the hill, | 0:31:48 | 0:31:51
and that person has never yet won in Fort William, | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
the current World Cup Champion, Rachel Atherton. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
Currently ranked number one in the world. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02
She is the best downhill rider of her generation - Rachel Atherton. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:08
Absolutely flying on the top part. Just taking a little seat there. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:14
Touches the wall, lines up for this, | 0:32:14 | 0:32:16
so Rachel is off the smooth section into the tough section. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:20
A huge reception from the crowd here. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
One of the stars of downhill riding. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
She just slipped slightly there, had to put her foot back in the pedal. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:30
Very, very dry today. | 0:32:30 | 0:32:31
You have to get absolutely on line. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:34
CHEERING | 0:32:34 | 0:32:37
Straight down, and Rachel heads towards the forest at speed. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
Well, Rachel Atherton has finished second | 0:32:45 | 0:32:48
far too many times for her liking, | 0:32:48 | 0:32:50
but I'll tell you something right now - | 0:32:50 | 0:32:52
she's going to finish first today. | 0:32:52 | 0:32:54
Keep it smooth, keep it simple. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:56
Almost seven-and-a-half seconds inside. | 0:32:56 | 0:33:00
She won the World Cup last year. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
She's never ever won at Fort William. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
It's something that's really annoyed her through the years. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:07
She's been so close, but my goodness | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
she is going to be miles ahead. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
CHEERING | 0:33:12 | 0:33:14
I think that says it all. Fort William crowd welcome her in. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:19
She could roll it down on a back wheel and still be inside. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:23
My goodness. Look at this! | 0:33:23 | 0:33:25
Well, that is the... | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
performance of a great, great champion. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:33
Ten seconds inside Manon Carpenter. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
And at last for Rachel Atherton! | 0:33:37 | 0:33:41
She wins it. | 0:33:41 | 0:33:43
It's the home race for her. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:45
My goodness me, she's a happy, happy girl. What a great champion. | 0:33:45 | 0:33:50
And confirmation of those results - | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
Last year's winner Emmeline Ragot from France came in third with | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
5 minutes 20.22 seconds. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
The young British rider Manon Carpenter took second place | 0:34:01 | 0:34:04
in 5:18.99. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
And over ten seconds faster with a time of 5:08.85, | 0:34:06 | 0:34:12
winning her first ever World Cup at Fort William, | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
was Rachel Atherton. | 0:34:15 | 0:34:16
Well, I was nervous. | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
Straight off the line I was messy and, like, I was slipping. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
I thought... All the way down, I thought, "Pull yourself together. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
"You've thrown it away." | 0:34:25 | 0:34:26
I just couldn't get my line right, just a little bit off. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
Sometimes you have to race over the edge, and luckily I stayed on. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:33
The crowd are, all the way down, shouting your name | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
and I could really hear it this year. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
Normally you blank it out, but this year I was like... | 0:34:38 | 0:34:40
It was really in my head and I was like, "I've got to dig deep here." | 0:34:40 | 0:34:45
I can't believe it. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
So what an amazing result there for the British women. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:50
Manon Carpenter in second place, Rachel Atherton in first. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
We're going to come back to the men's downhill | 0:34:53 | 0:34:55
in just a few moments, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:56
but before that we're going to go for a wild Scottish walk | 0:34:56 | 0:34:59
with Cameron McNeish. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:00
I'm heading for Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:12
The best way of reaching it is by ferry across Loch Linnhe, | 0:35:12 | 0:35:16
which effectively gives the area | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
all the romance and excitement | 0:35:19 | 0:35:21
and feeling of isolation of a Scottish island. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
There's a number of routes up Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour, | 0:35:32 | 0:35:36
including this one up Glen Ure. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
And away back in 1897, this was the route taken | 0:35:39 | 0:35:42
when two stalwarts of the Scottish mountaineering club, | 0:35:42 | 0:35:45
W H Bell and J Brown came to climb the great ridge, | 0:35:45 | 0:35:49
one of the great rock climbs on Garbh Bheinn. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
And they've quite a nice description of the walk up the glen here. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
This is what they said... | 0:35:55 | 0:35:58
"Bit by bit, Garbh Bheinn creeps into view | 0:35:58 | 0:36:01
"forming by the gradual addition of ridge to choire, | 0:36:01 | 0:36:04
"and crag to buttress. | 0:36:04 | 0:36:05
"One of the boldest pictures of mountain grandeur | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
"to be seen on the mainland." | 0:36:09 | 0:36:10
But it's the words of another mountaineering pioneer that | 0:36:12 | 0:36:16
I seem to remember best. | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
In 1904, Charles Inglis Clark described Glen Ure, | 0:36:19 | 0:36:23
"A swampy ground alternating with bog." | 0:36:23 | 0:36:27
So because of that, I think I'll take a different route. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
On the entire length of this ridge, you don't | 0:36:38 | 0:36:41
actually have to touch rock at any time. You can walk right up it. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:45
But now and again, if, like me, you like a wee bit of scrambling, | 0:36:45 | 0:36:49
when you get a wee section like this, | 0:36:49 | 0:36:51
you just can't resist a wee climb. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:53
There are three main mountains in the Ardgour area - | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
Sgurr Dhomhnuill, | 0:37:10 | 0:37:12
Sgurr Ghiubhsachain | 0:37:12 | 0:37:13
and Garbh Bheinn. All three of them are Corbetts. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:16
And although it's not the highest at 885 metres, I think | 0:37:16 | 0:37:21
Garbh Bheinn is by far the finest. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
You know, it's an extraordinary thing, | 0:37:38 | 0:37:40
but this area of Ardgour and the neighbouring area of Moidart and | 0:37:40 | 0:37:45
the whole of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula | 0:37:45 | 0:37:47
have some of the wildest areas in Scotland. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:51
And yet they're probably the least trodden hills in Scotland. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:55
And I think that's largely due to this big expanse behind me. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
This big expanse of Loch Linnhe. | 0:37:59 | 0:38:01
People look across from the other side and think, | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
"Oh, that's too remote, too far away." | 0:38:04 | 0:38:07
And yet it's really only a short ferry ride across the loch. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:10
Well, that's me at the top of the Sron a' Garbh Choire Bhig ridge. | 0:38:23 | 0:38:28
And from here it's just a short descent to the Bealloch, | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
and then a long rocky climb up to the summit. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:33
In misty weather, there's a lot of false summits | 0:38:33 | 0:38:37
and it can be quite difficult navigation wise. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
But today it should be a doddle. It's lovely and clear and, in fact, | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
I can see the summit cairn from here, | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
perched right on the edge of that cliff in front of me. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:48
You know, there's something about this big mountain that... | 0:39:03 | 0:39:07
almost evokes the spirit of those early | 0:39:07 | 0:39:09
Scottish Mountaineering Club members of the late 19th century. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:13
And particularly Bell and Brown. I can almost see them | 0:39:13 | 0:39:15
wandering up Glen Ure here, looking up the line of the great ridge and | 0:39:15 | 0:39:19
saying, "Let's have a go at that, let's tackle that." | 0:39:19 | 0:39:21
And just working their way up, exploring, navigating, | 0:39:21 | 0:39:24
feeling their way up this 1,000-foot climb to the summit. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
Climbers don't seem to do that any more. | 0:39:28 | 0:39:31
Climbing has changed so much and, to me, | 0:39:31 | 0:39:33
we've kind of lost that exploratory feel of the early pioneers. | 0:39:33 | 0:39:37
And that's why I like to come to a mountain like this. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
And I look at this big crag here, and I'm pretty convinced | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
if it was 1,500ft lower, it would be covered in rock-climbing routes. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:47
Here we are at the summit of Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:05
885 metres above the waters of Loch Linnhe. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:09
You know, sometimes you just become convinced that a mountain is | 0:40:10 | 0:40:15
blessing you. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:16
And I feel that this mountain has richly blessed me today. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:19
Oh, and there's points of reference all round. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:25
I can see Ben Nevis, but I can see all the Black Mount | 0:40:25 | 0:40:29
and Glen Creran hills right down to Cruachan. | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
Over here, Ben More of Mull, | 0:40:32 | 0:40:36
and away behind me in this mass of mountains of Moidart and Noidart, | 0:40:36 | 0:40:41
and I'm looking away up to the western seaboard of Scotland. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:46
It's wonderful. | 0:40:46 | 0:40:47
You know, I've just spent the last four weeks abroad - | 0:40:47 | 0:40:51
three weeks cycling through France from the English Channel to the | 0:40:51 | 0:40:54
Mediterranean, and a week hill walking in Crete in Greece. And... | 0:40:54 | 0:40:59
Well, you know what I'm going to say. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:01
There's nowhere in the world can compete with this kind of landscape. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:06
And it's just wonderful to sit up here and behold it all. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:12
Welcome back to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from Fort William. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
It's almost time for the men's downhill, | 0:41:28 | 0:41:31
but this year there's a separate race for the under-23s, | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
and a chance for local rider Lachlan Blair to show what he's made of. | 0:41:34 | 0:41:38
My goal for this weekend is to break the five minutes. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
My most recent time was a 5:11. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
I think that's my best race time I've had here. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:46
As a kid you were standing here cheering people. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
How will it be to be on the other side of the fence? | 0:41:48 | 0:41:51
Do you think you'll hear them? | 0:41:51 | 0:41:52
How much difference will that make to your race? | 0:41:52 | 0:41:54
I think it will...it will help. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:56
It'll definitely be noticeable. | 0:41:56 | 0:41:58
Because last year I was up rider marshalling, | 0:41:58 | 0:42:01
so you just ride down, sweep the course. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:03
And even then people are cheering. | 0:42:03 | 0:42:05
And it's really noticeable, it feels like... | 0:42:05 | 0:42:08
It's almost like a wall of sound. It's just crazy. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:11
It makes you want to go fast. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:13
As a local lad, Lachlan knows this course well, but he's | 0:42:13 | 0:42:17
a stranger to the tension only a World Cup competition can bring. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:22
Former world champion Greg Minnaar reckons this is a hard race | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
to start off with. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:27
-It's one of the toughest we've got. -Is it? -Yeah. -What are the rest like? | 0:42:27 | 0:42:31
Not as tough as that. Just carry speed. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:33
Brake early and roll out of those corners fast. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:36
That's where you're going to make your time here. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:38
It's tons of corners and it's all fast. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:40
So the faster you can come out of them, | 0:42:40 | 0:42:42
the better off you'll be. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:44
Don't worry about lines, just go fast. That's what you've got to do. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:47
It's the fastest man wins. It's easy. | 0:42:47 | 0:42:49
So at the top of the course, this is the moment Lachlan's been waiting | 0:42:49 | 0:42:53
for since he watched his very first downhill race as a wee lad of six. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:57
Looking good as he hurtles down this rough track, though. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
He's already ridden here on so many occasions | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
and is aiming for a sub-five minute time. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:06
Never managed it before, | 0:43:06 | 0:43:07
but he says today for him it's actually much smoother than normal. | 0:43:07 | 0:43:11
Oh, what's happened? | 0:43:12 | 0:43:14
Oh, my goodness, looks like he's got a blown tyre! | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
That is a disaster for this young man. | 0:43:17 | 0:43:19
It's all over for Lachlan - for this year at least. | 0:43:19 | 0:43:23
I was going well at the top split, | 0:43:23 | 0:43:25
and then I must have just hit a rock somewhere. | 0:43:25 | 0:43:28
Tyre went down. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:29
A little bit of loud shouting going on, | 0:43:29 | 0:43:33
but I sort of rolled down from there. | 0:43:33 | 0:43:35
It's something that can happen, obviously, | 0:43:35 | 0:43:37
there's nothing you can do about it. How frustrating, | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
given all the build up that had come along to Fort William? | 0:43:40 | 0:43:42
Super frustrating, really. I don't know how to explain it. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:45
It's just a bit annoying. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:47
Now it's almost time for the elite to face their high speed charge | 0:43:48 | 0:43:51
down the mountain. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:53
With a strong field from around the world, the men's competition | 0:43:53 | 0:43:56
is set to be as fierce as ever. | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
I really enjoy racing here. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:00
It's real physical and pretty much the whole way down | 0:44:00 | 0:44:03
you can hear fans cheering. And then coming into that finish... | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
The finish line jump is amazing, it's... | 0:44:07 | 0:44:09
I don't know, it's probably one of the best feelings I've ever had, | 0:44:09 | 0:44:12
just everyone screaming at you and cheering you on, | 0:44:12 | 0:44:15
making you go faster. It's cool. | 0:44:15 | 0:44:18
Brook MacDonald from New Zealand is ranked sixth, | 0:44:18 | 0:44:21
but today just fractions of a second separate the fastest riders. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:25
Currently fourth in the world is Steve Smith from Canada. | 0:44:25 | 0:44:29
Those margins are tight, and really it's anybody's game to win. | 0:44:29 | 0:44:32
It's just having that perfect run. | 0:44:32 | 0:44:34
It's not just being the most ballsy rider, | 0:44:34 | 0:44:37
it's a list of everything you've got to put together. | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
The list is massive, and some of the guys in the top five have had | 0:44:40 | 0:44:45
that figured out for years, so they get here prepared. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:48
I feel like I'm just getting there now, | 0:44:48 | 0:44:50
and hopefully can continue being in that top five. | 0:44:50 | 0:44:53
Steve Smith and Brook MacDonald are up against some strong | 0:44:53 | 0:44:56
British competition, including former world champion, | 0:44:56 | 0:44:59
22-year-old Danny Hart. | 0:44:59 | 0:45:01
He's come in second here at Fort William, | 0:45:01 | 0:45:04
but never yet managed the top spot. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:06
To win my first World Cup here in Fort William would be | 0:45:06 | 0:45:09
like a dream come true. | 0:45:09 | 0:45:10
I hope I can get that monkey off my back. | 0:45:13 | 0:45:16
In terms of the UCI Tour, | 0:45:16 | 0:45:17
this is really the home event for British riders. | 0:45:17 | 0:45:20
Is there a real sense of, kind of, feeling you are on home territory? | 0:45:20 | 0:45:24
Well, yeah. I have all my family here. I stop in the camper. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:27
It's just like we used to do Nationals when I was little, so... | 0:45:27 | 0:45:32
It's just like that, but with a bigger race. | 0:45:32 | 0:45:34
Leading the field, not just for the Brits but currently | 0:45:34 | 0:45:37
at the top of the world rankings, is another of the Atherton clan - Gee. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:42
So what's the secret of his success? | 0:45:42 | 0:45:44
You really have to attack from the word go, | 0:45:44 | 0:45:47
but at the same time you do have to be able to have that energy to | 0:45:47 | 0:45:51
ride the technical stuff with the same speed you were in practice | 0:45:51 | 0:45:55
and in training. | 0:45:55 | 0:45:57
You have to make sure you really can link all the sections together. | 0:45:57 | 0:46:01
If you're stalling and, kind of, | 0:46:01 | 0:46:03
doing it in a too stop-start fashion, then you waste a lot of energy, | 0:46:03 | 0:46:06
so it's all about keeping it smooth, keeping that speed up | 0:46:06 | 0:46:10
and kind of carrying momentum | 0:46:10 | 0:46:11
through the whole course, top to bottom. | 0:46:11 | 0:46:14
The Brits are at the forefront of downhill mountain biking, | 0:46:14 | 0:46:18
but Scottish riders haven't recently done too well on the world scene. | 0:46:18 | 0:46:22
But that could be about to change. | 0:46:22 | 0:46:24
Another young biker, Greg Williamson from Inverness, | 0:46:24 | 0:46:27
has just joined one of the big teams. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:30
It's just a bit of a dream come true and I'm really happy to be here | 0:46:30 | 0:46:33
at my home race at Fort William with a new team. | 0:46:33 | 0:46:36
After racing the last few years privately, | 0:46:36 | 0:46:39
it's really pretty special now for me, so I'm excited. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:42
I believe you have other reasons to celebrate today as well. | 0:46:42 | 0:46:45
Absolutely, yeah. | 0:46:45 | 0:46:46
It's my 21st birthday today, so I couldn't ask for much more, really. | 0:46:46 | 0:46:50
And as Greg Williamson lines up for the start of his run, | 0:46:50 | 0:46:54
it's a chance for him to shine here at Fort William. | 0:46:54 | 0:46:57
So Greg Williamson, | 0:46:58 | 0:46:59
a local boy training here all the time, knows the course very well. | 0:46:59 | 0:47:03
Done pretty well here to get into the top 25 in qualifying. | 0:47:04 | 0:47:10
Oh, just a hand slipped off the brake there. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:15
But Greg's looking good. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:19
Looking very good indeed. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:22
This is fantastic as he comes towards the Scotland Arch. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:25
Greg's got the fastest time so far. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:27
It's a great performance from this young rider from Inverness. | 0:47:27 | 0:47:31
He really loves riding here | 0:47:31 | 0:47:32
and just listen to the crowd willing him down the slope. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:36
They know they're watching the new star of Scottish downhill cycling. | 0:47:36 | 0:47:40
Crosses the line. 4:42.1 | 0:47:40 | 0:47:42
and that puts him into first place. | 0:47:42 | 0:47:45
Right now he's the new leader of the UCI World Cup. | 0:47:45 | 0:47:49
But, of course, the faster riders are still to come. | 0:47:50 | 0:47:53
On the course now is the national champion of New Zealand - | 0:47:57 | 0:47:59
Brook MacDonald. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:01
Ranked sixth in the world, came third here in 2011. | 0:48:01 | 0:48:04
Absolutely loves it. | 0:48:04 | 0:48:06
One of his favourite courses. Did very well. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:09
Placed in the top six during qualification. | 0:48:09 | 0:48:12
Tucking down there, trying to keep out of the wind, | 0:48:12 | 0:48:14
trying to get the most out of this upper part of the course. | 0:48:14 | 0:48:18
So Brook is flying through the top part of this, | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
just needs to pick the bike up over there. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
Oh, just lost the front end, came a bit high up. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:26
Recovered very, very quickly. | 0:48:27 | 0:48:29
Very lively-looking suspension on his bike as he comes | 0:48:29 | 0:48:31
down into the trees. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:32
Brook MacDonald looking pretty fast. | 0:48:34 | 0:48:36
Seven-tenths of a second behind Sam Hill. Absolutely flying. | 0:48:36 | 0:48:40
They call him The Bulldog. And my goodness, he's got the head | 0:48:40 | 0:48:44
down, he's got the shoulders up, and he's putting on the power. | 0:48:44 | 0:48:48
This New Zealander, 22 years old, sixth in the world ranking, | 0:48:48 | 0:48:52
only been racing for three years. | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
The former junior world champion is looking like | 0:48:55 | 0:48:59
he's putting on the afterburners as he flies down here. | 0:48:59 | 0:49:03
Racing for Trek World Racing Team. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:05
It's going to be tight. | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
Oh, he's inside! What a ride! | 0:49:07 | 0:49:11
It wasn't tight, it was 4:37. | 0:49:11 | 0:49:15
That is incredible. | 0:49:15 | 0:49:17
What a run from Brook MacDonald. | 0:49:19 | 0:49:21
He said his favourite thing about Fort William was | 0:49:23 | 0:49:25
coming into the arena and hearing the crowd of spectators screaming. | 0:49:25 | 0:49:29
And he certainly heard it there as he crossed the line in first place. | 0:49:29 | 0:49:33
Canadian Steve Smith, ranked fourth in the world and absolutely | 0:49:37 | 0:49:42
loves the roughest, gnarliest, bumpy courses on the circuit. | 0:49:42 | 0:49:46
Flying down here at incredible speed. | 0:49:46 | 0:49:49
It's all about the commitment. | 0:49:49 | 0:49:51
So as Steve comes down into the rock garden off the wood section, | 0:49:51 | 0:49:56
he is pretty much on line. Yes, he took a nice outside line there. | 0:49:56 | 0:50:00
Looks very smooth so far. | 0:50:00 | 0:50:02
Did well in qualification to come up here in the top ten. | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
It's a technical sport, you've got to remember the line. | 0:50:05 | 0:50:08
As Steve skips down over the rocks, it's a good smooth ride | 0:50:10 | 0:50:13
so far in the top here. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:15
Just outside... | 0:50:17 | 0:50:18
0.47 outside the time of Brook MacDonald. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:22
We saw the work that Brook MacDonald put in at the bottom section | 0:50:22 | 0:50:25
of the course. Can the Canadian do the same? | 0:50:25 | 0:50:28
He will hear the crowd as he approaches the arch. | 0:50:31 | 0:50:34
And they will draw him in all the way to the line. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:38
But has he'd done enough? | 0:50:40 | 0:50:41
Brook MacDonald really was pedalling as hard as he possibly could, | 0:50:41 | 0:50:44
and so is Smith. | 0:50:44 | 0:50:46
It's going to be close. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:47
Oh! Just outside. | 0:50:47 | 0:50:50
4:38.07. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:52
Well, that was another very, very impressive ride from the Canadian. | 0:50:52 | 0:50:56
Stevie Smith in second and Brook MacDonald in the lead. | 0:50:58 | 0:51:03
Chasing Brook MacDonald, who currently sits in the hot seat, | 0:51:06 | 0:51:09
is Sam Blenkinsop, another rider from New Zealand. | 0:51:09 | 0:51:13
Ranked 18 in the word. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:16
Onto the boardwalk. Pedalling hard. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:18
So Sam, who is a strong favourite here with the crowd... | 0:51:19 | 0:51:23
Very good technical rider. | 0:51:24 | 0:51:27
Lacks a little bit of the sprinting speed maybe on the lower part | 0:51:27 | 0:51:31
of the course, but very, very good here. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:33
Taking a tight line there. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:35
And as Sam drops down into the toughest | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
and biggest of the rock drops, he's looking pretty good. | 0:51:39 | 0:51:42
A little bit wobbly over that section, | 0:51:42 | 0:51:44
but down into the trees with confidence. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
Sam Blenkinsop looking good, four-tenths of a second down. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:51
Won the World Cup in 2008 in Schladming. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:54
Never won here at Fort William, though. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:56
In fact, we've never had a New Zealander | 0:51:56 | 0:51:59
at the top of the podium at Fort William ever, | 0:51:59 | 0:52:02
but Sam Blenkinsop is giving himself | 0:52:02 | 0:52:04
a brilliant, brilliant chance. | 0:52:04 | 0:52:06
Oh, my goodness. | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
He puts a bit of style on as well towards the end. | 0:52:09 | 0:52:12
Can he make up that half second? Right, Sam, stop showing off. | 0:52:12 | 0:52:16
Just get to the line. It's very close! | 0:52:16 | 0:52:19
Oh! Finishes in third. | 0:52:19 | 0:52:20
Now, had he not done the big tailwhip at the top, | 0:52:20 | 0:52:25
maybe he would have been on the top of the podium there. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
But that is still very, very impressive indeed. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:30
And we only have two more riders, and they're both British - | 0:52:30 | 0:52:33
Danny Hart and Gee Atherton. | 0:52:33 | 0:52:36
On the course now | 0:52:38 | 0:52:40
is the number one ranked rider in the world at the moment - | 0:52:40 | 0:52:44
Britain's Gee Atherton. | 0:52:44 | 0:52:46
The 2010 Downhill World Cup champion has won 4X, downhill, BMX. | 0:52:46 | 0:52:52
He is truly one of the best riders in the world. | 0:52:52 | 0:52:57
He placed third in Fort William in 2012. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:01
Gee is going to fly down this. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:03
And it's all about the margins at the top end of this game. | 0:53:05 | 0:53:08
One of Gee's extraordinary talents is the ability to push through pain. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:12
He had some horrible crashes last year and has recovered from injury | 0:53:12 | 0:53:15
well to be very competitive again here in Fort William. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:19
Gee Atherton, one of the most progressive mountain bikers | 0:53:19 | 0:53:22
of all time, won his first Downhill World Cup in 2004, | 0:53:22 | 0:53:25
aged just 19. | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
He's finished in the top five of the Downhill World Series | 0:53:27 | 0:53:29
every year since. | 0:53:29 | 0:53:30
He's been Downhill World Champion, Downhill World Cup Series Champion, | 0:53:32 | 0:53:35
Downhill European Champion and twice British National Champion. | 0:53:35 | 0:53:40
And he is miles inside Brook MacDonald at the second split. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:46
He loves coming to Fort William, it's his home track. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:50
Remember, his sister won here for the first time ever earlier today. | 0:53:50 | 0:53:55
Can it be an Atherton at the top of the podium in the men's | 0:53:55 | 0:53:59
downhill and the women's downhill? | 0:53:59 | 0:54:01
RAUCOUS CHEERING | 0:54:01 | 0:54:03
That noise says it all. They love him here at Fort William. | 0:54:03 | 0:54:06
He is such a brilliant competitor, and he's powering on. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:12
Look at that time. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:13
Oh, my goodness me! | 0:54:13 | 0:54:16
4:36.71. | 0:54:16 | 0:54:19
Absolutely smashed it there. | 0:54:19 | 0:54:22
The top section of the course he was loose | 0:54:22 | 0:54:25
because he was trying to go so fast. | 0:54:25 | 0:54:27
The middle section he kept it together, kept the power on. | 0:54:27 | 0:54:31
And over the bottom section there was nobody to touch him. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:35
That is an astonishing ride. | 0:54:35 | 0:54:37
First place for Gee Atherton, and only one man can beat him. | 0:54:37 | 0:54:41
And that man is Danny Hart. | 0:54:41 | 0:54:42
So finally relieved from the waiting, it's Danny Hart. | 0:54:44 | 0:54:48
Ex-world champion from 2011 | 0:54:48 | 0:54:50
and second place rider here last year. | 0:54:50 | 0:54:54
Absolutely flies through this. | 0:54:54 | 0:54:59
A typical training week - he's on his bike, in the gym, | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
downhill, now riding motocross. | 0:55:02 | 0:55:05
Danny Hart is everything on two wheels. | 0:55:05 | 0:55:08
So Danny is chasing this. | 0:55:09 | 0:55:10
Wanting to improve on his second, a nice outside line. | 0:55:12 | 0:55:15
Only a couple of riders have taken that line. So here is Danny. | 0:55:15 | 0:55:19
Oh, just got slightly snagged up there on that corner. | 0:55:19 | 0:55:23
But looking good. | 0:55:23 | 0:55:25
Danny just lost it a little bit there as he comes down | 0:55:25 | 0:55:28
into the line into the trees. | 0:55:28 | 0:55:30
Well, I think it's fair to say that Danny Hart is working | 0:55:32 | 0:55:36
incredibly hard to beat Gee Atherton. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:39
My goodness. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:41
Such an incredible performer. Won the World Championship in 2011. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:47
Oh, he came out the forest section there | 0:55:48 | 0:55:51
and did a little wheelie over the tabletop there! | 0:55:51 | 0:55:54
He is 1.2 down at the second split, but he has got the power, | 0:55:55 | 0:55:59
he has got the fitness, and he has certainly got the spirit. | 0:55:59 | 0:56:04
He's a man who loves to win. | 0:56:04 | 0:56:06
Gee Atherton does too, but this guy does not give up. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:10
He's putting it on. | 0:56:10 | 0:56:11
Let's have a look and see what they're saying. | 0:56:13 | 0:56:16
They're saying, "Welcome to Fort William, Danny Hart. | 0:56:16 | 0:56:20
"Let's see what you can do." | 0:56:20 | 0:56:22
And what he's doing is working incredibly hard. Put the power on. | 0:56:22 | 0:56:26
Is it enough? | 0:56:26 | 0:56:27
Oh, my goodness. It's not. | 0:56:29 | 0:56:31
He lost a lot in the second half of the course. | 0:56:31 | 0:56:33
The World Cup winner, though, for this year is Gee Atherton. | 0:56:34 | 0:56:39
It's an Atherton at the top of the podium for the men's | 0:56:39 | 0:56:43
and the women's race, and that's how much it means to him. | 0:56:43 | 0:56:47
Big hugs there for Gee Atherton, with a smile as wide as Lochaber. | 0:56:47 | 0:56:53
And there's Rachel giving him a big hug as well. | 0:56:53 | 0:56:57
Brother and sister - champions. | 0:56:57 | 0:56:59
-HE LAUGHS -That's a lovely sight. | 0:57:00 | 0:57:03
And that's what the fans at Fort William wanted to see. | 0:57:03 | 0:57:07
So, the final results looked like this - | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
the young Scottish rider Greg Williamson had a fantastic run, | 0:57:09 | 0:57:13
coming in 10th with a time of 4 minutes 42.13. | 0:57:13 | 0:57:18
Danny Hart managed seventh place with 4:39.36. | 0:57:18 | 0:57:22
In third, Canadian Steve Smith's time was 4:38.07. | 0:57:22 | 0:57:27
New Zealand's Brook MacDonald took second in 4:37.85. | 0:57:27 | 0:57:32
But out in the lead with at time of 4:36.71 was Britain's Gee Atherton. | 0:57:32 | 0:57:37
I'm stuck for words. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:40
An absolutely amazing day. It doesn't get better than this. | 0:57:40 | 0:57:43
Rachel winning as well. Just a great day for the family. | 0:57:43 | 0:57:45
Yeah, incredible. I mean, Rachel's been riding well all week. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:49
I was listening to her run earlier. | 0:57:49 | 0:57:51
I didn't come and watch, I was trying to stay focused. | 0:57:51 | 0:57:54
To go 1, 1, with my sister is incredible. | 0:57:54 | 0:57:57
What does it mean to you | 0:57:57 | 0:57:58
to have another top of the podium at Fort William? | 0:57:58 | 0:58:01
It means the world. | 0:58:01 | 0:58:02
It's one of the biggest races on the calendar for me. | 0:58:02 | 0:58:04
In front of a home crowd, my family, all my friends here. | 0:58:04 | 0:58:08
The crowd have been amazing. It's made the event for me, for sure. | 0:58:08 | 0:58:12
Well, what a weekend it's been for the Atherton family. | 0:58:12 | 0:58:16
Congratulations to them. | 0:58:16 | 0:58:17
But that brings us to the end of The Adventure Show, | 0:58:17 | 0:58:20
and we're taking a little break for the summer. | 0:58:20 | 0:58:22
