Hello and welcome to highlights of the Investec Derby the official

event that begins the celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond

Jubilee weekend festivity at Epsom racecourse, the most demanding in

the world. It's the ultimate test of a horse. It needs stamina, speed,

balance and a very good mind. can prepare and do your homework.

You never know what will happen until you get out there. They are

under starters orders for the Derby. They are away. Away they go.

He's got the Derby in his sights. It's something you never forget.

Frankie Dettori. Down he goes. Storming away. To the line! He puts

his hand in the air! This classic has been the defining race when it

comes to hailing true champions. The best three-year-old colts

competing over a mile-and-a-half for a share of the prize money on

offer. All taking place under the watchful gaez of race's number one

fan. -- gaze of race's number one fan. Welcome to Epsom. Derby Day is

always a very special national occasion. The Royal association

with Epsom goes back 300 years. Queen making her way to the paddock.

This year with the Jubilee celebrations days away it's a Royal

occasion. A great moment in any year, but more so in the Jubilee

year. The nation awaits. Carlton House strides to the front for Her

Majesty the Queen. It was neck and neck. It will be a Royal victory, I

think. It's a Royal winner. Jubilee fever seems to be on everyone.

day that Her Majesty the Queen tries not to miss. Her Majesty the

racing on Derby Day seen making her way up the home straight to take

her place amongst the enormous crowd to celebrate this very unique

occasion -- tradition. The Derby riders were greeted by Epsom's

guest of honour. Willie Carson. A four time winner of the great race

who was as usual his cheeky self with special greetings for the

jockeys taking part. One of his finest moments came in 1977 when

giving Her Majesty victory in the Oaks. The Queen kept a close eye

for this year's Derby. We cast our eyes over the favourites. The

favourite was Camelot. Camelot was bidding to become the third horse

since 1970 win the 2,000 Guinness at New Market and the Derby.

Bonfire was the biggest obstacle to Camelot winning the Derby. Main

Sequence was the first Derby runner for his young trainer. He came in

unbeaten after four starts. Astrology was ridden by Ryan Moore.

He was the only jockey who had won the Derby before. Thought thought -

- Thought Worthy. Hayley Turner was only the second woman to ride in

rd Derby. COMMENTATOR: Will Camelot join the

greats who made their name here at Epsom? He's locked away. That's it.

They're ready. Set. The racing in the Investec Derby in 2012.

Cavaleiro near the inside. Minimise Risk in the early stages. Main

Sequence. On the far side it's osteoporosis -- Astrology who goes

on. He take it is out clearly now from Thought Worthy. Cavaleiro on

the near side. As all the time they are climbing. Behind them Main

Sequence, Bonfire with the nose band is in the centre. At the rear

is Camelot and Minimise Risk. Astrology going on by a couple of

lengths, doing it well too. A brisk pace. Rugged Cross, Cavaleiro, then

thought thut out deeper on the track. In behind them in the centre

follows Bonfire from Mickdaam. Camelot is on the outside. Last is

Minimise Risk. All the time they are climbing in the Derby.

Astrology out in front, leads by a couple of lengths. Thought Worthy

goes a clear second. Rugged Cross on the inside. In fourth position

is Bonfire. Further back is Cavaleiro who lost ground followed

by Main Sequence. Mickdaam is on the inside who is travelling for

O'Brien. Then Minimise Risk. They are running down hill. The leader

is Astrology. Astrology out in front by a half length to Thought

Worthy. Rugged Cross on the inside of Bonfire. In behind them is

Cavaleiro. They follow next in the field by Main Sequence. At the rear

of the field Camelot has eased to the outside. With about seven

lengths to make up as they run down Tattenham Corner. Astrology just

the leader. Now Thought Worthy coming at him. Out in the centre

battling away is Bonfire. Now Camelot, he calls on him hech is

racing them quickly. Getting away Astrology. His stablemate in front.

Now Camelot is now turning on the heat now. He is rung at fast

quality. On the outside Camelot. Camelot takes a narrow lead from

stablemate Astrology. First father/son trainer/jockey to win

the Derby. Aidan and Joseph O'Brien. it. Aidan O'Brien and Joseph

O'Brien go into the history books as the first father/son,

trainer/jockey combination to have landed the Derby and Camelot is

part of Derby legend. I have a proud mum. Congratulations. Thank

you. Thank you. Absolutely, I can't believe it. It's amazing. What was

watching that like in the closing stages? Torture. I met Leicester

Picket last weekend he said, "Tell Joseph not to be in hurry" when I

saw him coming I knew he had timed it perfectly. Incredible. They had

hinted they would like this horse to become the first Triple Crown

Winner in 42 years. APPLAUSE

Into the winner's enclosure, this very special place. With a horse

who has entered Derby legend. man whose colours were carried to

victory, Derrick Smith, we have spoken to you twice now after the

Oaks and the core nation Cup. This is the one you wanted? This is what

everybody wants in racing. It's not a dream, I never believed I could

do it. Unbelievable. To win the English Derby is a dream come true.

What a ride from young Joseph? a ride. What a horse. To travel so

easy in the early part of the race, go to the outside. From the three

poe it was all over. John Magnier with me now. What a horse this is.

Of the good horses you have seen where does he rate? He must be

right there. I wouldn't want to say too much about him, it would sound

boostful. Is it's there for everyone to see. We are fortunate

to have anything to do with him. you want to win the Triple Crown?

Wouldn't anybody. Not many people have attempted it. You have that

chance? We are so old now, these things mean more when you get older.

If you asked me 30 years ago, I would of looked the other way. We

have to see what Derek and Michael have to say about it. Mere is

confirmation of the result: -- here amongst the winning connections on

taidge. They were joined by their son, Joseph in the colours of

Derrick Smith, part of the successful ownership team to

celebrate the victory of the brilliant, Camelot.

The principal race for older horses was the Diamond Jubilee Coronation

Cup named in honour of Her Majesty's celebrations. We found a

race card from 1953 in which the Queen's horse finished second. The

following year the horse came back and won it, who would win it this

time around? The favourite was St Nicholas Abbey. His main opposition

seemed to be Beaten Up. Johnny Murtagh was on board. The last time

he ran he was well behind St Nicholas Abbey. Another content

Nicholas Abbey. Another content tender was Masked Marvel. He was

expected to do much better this time around. Robin Hood, Masked

Marvel, then Quest For Peace, followed by Beaten Up, who is in

behind Quest For Peace. Then St Nicholas Abbey, spotting his

pacemaker about ten lengths at this stage. Red Cadeaux still at the

tail of the field. As they race towards the highest point of the

course. To free wheel down Tattenham Hill. Robin Hood by five

lengths to Masked Marvel in second. In third is the white cap of Quest

For Peace, two lengths away then is Beaten Up, followed by Red Cadeaux,

just moving through on the inside to just shade St Nicholas Abbey,

who is held up at the rear. He is riding a confident race from the

back. As they race down to Tattenham Corner, Robin Hood has

got right awaifplt he is eight lengths in front. Setting a gallop

here from Masked Marvel in second. In third is Quest For Peace. Now,

starting to ease to the outside ibg St Nicholas Abbey. -- is St

Nicholas Abbey. Into the home straight, he got there in two

bounds O'Brien. St Nicholas Abbey raced up to take the lead from

Masked Marvel. Robin Hood in his stride. Further back is Quest For

Peace and Red Cadeaux running on well. It's St Nicholas Abbey the

leader with a furlong to go. He is four lengths in front of Masked

Marvel. Red Cadeaux into third and Quest For Peace. As they race up

now towards the line, it's St Nicholas Abbey who will go on and

make it back-to-back wins in the Coronation Cup, the Diamond Jubilee

Coronation Cup won by St Nicholas Abbey, Red Cadeaux good run second.

In third Masked Marvel, followed in fourth then by Quest For Peace and

a long gap to Beaten Up and last is From the way that I feel when the

bell starts to peel, I could swear I was falling, I could swear I was

falling, I could swear that I was falling, falling in love!

Thanks very much for entertaining the crowds here at Epsom. Now the

The fugue was running with the colours of Lord Lloyd Webber. Last

year's winning combination was hoping that lightning would strike

with A vow. Another contender was Was which cost 1.2 million Guineas.

There was drama at early on in the race as William Bewick encounter at

serious interference and did very their -- at the rear of the field,

The leader is by a narrow length- Coleen, from sirocco, staff. The

Feud is well back in the field. On the inside Devotion followed by

Maybe. Steady now as they are running down Tattenham Hale. The

pink cap of Twell followed on the inside I Was. Nicely poised his Vow.

Their run-down Tattenham Corner. The Fugue is 10 lengths behind the

leader. Out the back Kalyani. Here down the outside. Was has gone down

on the inside to take the lead from Val. The Few write down the outside.

One of the quintet trained by Aidan What a fabulous couple of days it

has been for the O'Brien team but particularly for Joseph O'Brien.

Only 19 years of age but nerves of steel but with talent. He gets the

nerves from the animals. He is riding very good cattle, as it were.

Today I was very impressed by the way he wrote that horse. He gave

plenty of time. He was a long way behind his pacemaker and he just

gave the horse all the time to get himself sorted out, get himself

balanced when he got into the straight. Even I, at 50 years of

age, I would have been struggling to wait that long. His first words

when he got off the horse was he didn't come down the hill. He has

ridden a very good race but we know that. He is only 19. He doesn't

know what can go wrong in a horse race because everything he has done

so far has gone right for him. He has won a Breeders' Cup which is

the biggest accolade that any jockey can do. Apart from the

Derby? Of course, and now he has done that as well. The jockey,

first class. The horse, isn't he out of this world? A champion two-

year-old, top-rated two-year-old, runs in the 2000 Guineas first time

out he wins that from coming from behind. Then the Derby and he wins

that as well. An exciting time not just for the Jockey but also for

Camelot. Take a look at his He has got a lot of stamina. We are

trying to work out where Camelot might run in the future. There is

talk that he could be the first Triple Crown winner since Nijinsky

in... 1970. Correct. Do you think that is a possibility? I think so.

I really do think they have got a horse. He has done it at two, he

has won the 2000 Guineas, one mile. Then he has come on and won the

Derby. He is a stamina horse. He will go on and win the St Leger and

he will be the greatest horse since Nijinsky. What more can a horse

have to go to stud with? The credentials are fantastic. We will

be seeing a lot of the good horses at Royal Ascot starting on Tuesday

19th June. It finishes on Saturday the 23rd with the Diamond Jubilee

Stakes in which the top Australian sprinter makes her first appearance

It is an absolute pleasure to welcome the first father-son

winning combination to the studio with us now. Aidan O'Brien and

Joseph. Aden, in your wildest dreams, watching this young lad

growing up, could you ever imagine a day like this? It is one of those

days beyond dreams, but you dare to dream of. It is incredible. Joseph,

you have been coming to the Derby since you were a little boy, could

you have thought of this day happening? Never. I never let

myself dream about winning the Derby. Camelot is an exceptional

horse and I was very lucky. A lot of horses did not handle the hill,

Bonfire did not handle it. You said when you got off, he did not handle

the hill either so how magnificent of force was it from Camelot this

afternoon? I don't think it was that he did not handle it but he

was a green horse. It was his first time on a track like that. He would

have learnt a lot and if he ever races it again he would handle it

better. Can you tell us what emotions you were going through

when Astrology kicked for home? knew that Astrology was the big

danger. We knew going a mile-and-a- half on better ground he was going

to improve more. I knew the way Joseph would be at the other end of

the field and Astrology would be ridden very far. It was a big worry.

You can give way that you cannot give distance. We felt Astrology

was a big danger. This was a very important race and the lads had two

serious chances. I think it was a very special run. Joseph, you knew

Astrology was the danger, he was 12 lengths in front of you, how did

you have the confidence to wait that long? When I am in that kind

of position, you cannot do much about it. I felt coming into the

race he was a big danger. He is a very good horse. My Lad is pretty

good also. You why only 19, you have ridden possibly as many good

horses as I wrote in my career! is because of this man! How does

this horse rate, even though you were only a young lad, how does

this horse rate with the horses you have ridden in the past? He is

right up there with the very best of them. He is the man! We have got

to ask about the future of this horse. There is chat about the

Triple Crown, chat about the King George, what sort of options are

going through your mind? I know you have to talk to the boys as well.

Absolutely. There all the options. He can have a break, he can go for

the Leger, he has all the options. I suppose what is very unusual is

he has only run four times but he is always finishing. It is very

good that he is getting very relaxed. Even when he came in today,

usually horses are flustered or a little bit hyper but he stood there

and he was normal and relaxed. It was very unusual. Taking more that

in and what you have said just now, we will have to expect even a

better horse when he runs next time? You never know but he is a

very, very good attitude and he has a very good outlook. They can be

quite flighty and he is quite relaxed. He pricked his ears and

had a look at all the amusements on the inside. He made fun of them,

did he? I have got to ask Aden, Joseph is still a young man, you

have experienced some of the greatest highs in racing all of the

world, not just here in Epsom, where does this success with this

young man piloting one of your horses stand with all your

achievements? This is beyond dreams. I cannot tell you how grateful we

are to be in the position that we are in. Something like this I could

not even dream about. This is just beyond dreams. I have no words to

describe it, it is incredible. have got some words. I congratulate

you both because you were doing absolutely fantastic but this guy,

this 19-year-old, he reminds me of the great Lester Piggott and that

is saying something. I congratulate you, you are a fantastic jockey.
