Fifth-Round Replay: Swansea City v Sheffield Wednesday The FA Cup

Good evening. Welcome to a slightly

cold south Wales. Swansea were

beaten for the first time in 11

games on Saturday, and to date

Carlos Carvalhal's former team come

to town. Sheffield Wednesday are

17th in the championship, so 19

places below Swansea. Kick of just a

couple of minutes away. I'm joined

by my colleagues for this game.

Swansea's third straight we play in

the cup. Carlos Carvalhal is nervous

and has said it is like the Police

Academy films. First there was one,

and now there is too many.

Probably

from his point of view, yes. It is

how they have dealt with those

replays. Particularly in the last

row they were very impressive and I

think they will be the same tonight.

excellent in the first game and made

a sensational save.

game. Lucky with the forehand. That

reflects their was awesome. It was

in a good position.

They have 222-year-olds in the

squad, which probably helped each

other.

I think it would and the fact

that they get on very well.

Otherwise they would not be in the

club together. I think also both

goalkeepers getting enough time.

Whether it is out on loan or at the

club.

Just time to hear from both

managers. Starting with the home

team.

Not because the opponents are

the worst or better than others, but

because we have more players. We in

the last game we finished with three

boys from the cup. We have given

chances to the boys. But we respect

the competition and I think our

first 11 today is a strong side. I

think we will play with a good team.

We have the chance to come with less

teams, so the motivation has to also

be from inside and the pressure you

must see from the first minute until

the last minute, so the motivation

has come from each other. And

together we must try to make the

best day for us.

So a place in the

quarterfinals awaits either Swansea

in the Premier League, or Sheffield

Wednesday of the championship. Do

you think the Sheffield Wednesday

manager, Kevin, they are seven

points above the relegation zone, do

you think he is just finding which

players he will want to keep our

next year and getting some kind of

balance in the club? Given some of

the sides in the championship are

unlikely to go down.

Yes, but of

course you have to get as secure as

you can as quickly as you can. An

element is building for next season

and getting players together before

next season. Certainly these sorts

of games, with that in mind, will

tell the manager a lot.

Swansea will

want the momentum they had before

the weekend defeat at Brighton to

continue.

I think that is very much

the case. It is important that they

continue that and pick themselves up

after the Brighton defeat and

hopefully that is only a blip for

them and they continued their really

good run at home that they have had

recently.

Well, his run was good. The

first one he has made. First ball

down the channel. Slowed Loovens

down and gots half a yard and

obviously the finish was poor. He

got half a yard easy enough. Only

jogged him. I would say, Steve, that

is the first time they have been

down the sides of the five-man

defence, Swansea.

We are into the one minute of added

time at the end of this goalless

couple of smart saves, the best of

which to deny Jacob Butterfield.

better chances.

looked the better team. There is a

cautiousness about the way Swansea

have approached the game and the

longer the game goes for - this is

heading for extra time and penalty.

But they don't want that, Swansea

don't want that. They have got to

commit one or two more men forward.

At the moment, just not good enough.

There we go. It is all to play for

Kevin Kilbane and Mark Schwarzer are

with me. There has been the odd

thing but not a great deal.

Yes Mark

said that yes, Sheffield Wednesday

created the better chances

throughout, but they didn't really

do enough across the course of the

game. I think they were defending

deep. I don't think Swansea have

done enough to affect the three

centre halves from Sheffield

Wednesday. So it has been stagnant

in the middle.

Do you think the

pressure is all on Swansea, can you

understand Sheffield Wednesday

playing five at the back as Mark has

been alluding to?

I can understand

it. You would expect Sheffield

Wednesday to be more defensive and

try and contain Swansea and hit them

on the counter. That is what they

have done in the first half. At

times they got lucky, because of the

quality of final pass of Swansea has

been off. If they can improve on

that, Sheffield Wednesday will find

themselves in trouble.

They have had

more clear cut chances?

Yes they had

the best chance and it took a good

save from Nordfeldt to prevent

Wednesday from taking the lead.

It was a good reflex save.

When the

ball was hit, I said goal. He

reacted quickly to eliminate the

danger. You think Rhodes may get on

the end of it. But the keeper reacts

well.

They're a striking duo, Joao

and Rhodes, but Rhodes is going

wide.

That is not where he wants to

play. He is a box player. He wants

crosses into the area. Joao's

movement when he has had the chance

has been sharp and he has sharp feet

in intricate situations. But it has

been fleeting.

If you look at how

Swansea have approached this,

Abraham has got three centre halves

to deal with. He is up there on his

own. You want to see him, talking

about Rhodes going out wide, you

want to see Abraham do something

similar and work the channels.

I

want to see him affecting the centre

halves. If you look at Loovens

and Pudil, he hasn't done enough.

They have played a high line at

times, Sheffield Wednesday, he has

had opportunities to move behind of

but I felt throughout the first

half, Dyer has been the bright

spark. I think they can affect it

more with sharper movement.

They

make tiet predictable. -- make it

too predictable. They know he is

going to come short every time,

Abraham, and he is not rarely going

to turn. When Dyer does it, it is

asking questions and Sheffield

Wednesday players have to think is

it going behind oar coming short.

Dyer has been effective in he has

been coming in off the right-hand

side and finding himself, you

touched on it, pockets of space,

where he has tried to get on the

half turn and he has been the one

creative spark for Swansea. I think

they concealed it more from

Abrahams. He has it in his locker.

Do you have sympathy for Abraham in

those clips, he has got five

Sheffield Wednesday players around

him and the holding midfield in

fronts.

Yes, but his job is up front

to lead the line. He needs to

stretch the team more and create

room for Dyer and Routledge. When he

does get the ball, he needs to hold

it up. There were occasions where he

was too easily dispossessed with the

ball and allowed Sheffield Wednesday

to go forward and attack. He needs

to be stronger and hold up the ball.

Sometimes it is unselfish running,

you may not get on the ball, but

what it stretches Sheffield

Wednesday, forces them deeper and

allows your team-mates to get in

possession. A thankless task. That

is what happens. You look at Luis

Suarez, he doesn't have a big

involvement, but look at the video

of that striker running behind.

Where Swansea have had the most

success has been on the counter. And

they have been able to exploit the

space.

Yes Nordfeldt did well.

Rhodes was in front of him before

the corner was taken. He moved out

of way. Had he stood there the

keeper wouldn't have been able to

come out. Swansea counter quickly.

Dyer has been the player, each time

he gets the ball they look

dangerous. Abraham has made that run

all night. On that occasion it was

the right run. Because he was in

free space.

This first time he

didn't get too many opportunities to

do this, make the run forward. It is

a poor weighted pass to Dyer. But

that was pretty much it from

Swansea's point of view. The attacks

seemed to peter out around the final

third. I think we expect more from

Swansea as the Premier League side.

If you're Sheffield Wednesday, we

have kept them out, had a couple of

chances, more of the sometime.

Yes

continue to do the same, keep the

defence tight. Probably more tighter

at times, don't give them too much

space and at the other end be more

clinical. They have had chances and

they have to make sure the next one

counts.

We're going to talk to the Swansea

club captain very shortly, but

before that we're just looking ahead

to the FA Cup replay still to come.

have been spending time with the

League 1 club at their last training
