Third-Round Replay: Chelsea v Norwich City The FA Cup

Bridge were last season 's FA Cup

finalists Chelsea face a third-round

replay against Norwich City of the

Championship. There will be a winner

tonight even if it takes extra time

and penalties and if that is the

case it will be a late night because

the kick-off here at Stamford Bridge

has been delayed until 8pm because

of a suspension on the district line

which for those who know the area

runs very close to the ground. Also

tonight we might see an appearance

of the video referee. It's been a

difficult few weeks for Chelsea, the

head coach Antonio Conte 30-0 draws

in a row and a public feud with Jose

Mourinho. After fielding a weakened

team 11 days ago at Carrow Road he

badly needs a win tonight. Daniel

Farke is the first overseas manager

in Norwich estimate but it's been a

difficult first season. Some poor

results and the sale of several key

players combining to leave the

Canaries bathroom on song.

How do you see things at Chelsea at

the moment from afar?

I saw the game

the other day with Leicester and to

be fair Leicester were really good

and he should have had more than

that. I saw them tired little bit

which doesn't surprise me because

the schedule has been quite tight

and some of the players, for example

has urged was very low in stamina --

Hazard was very low in stamina. It

was one of those were nothing was

coming alive for him and it means

that obviously it was low and

physicality in my

physicality in my opinion.

He has a

bigger squad than a few others. Can

rotate.

Yes, Bakayoko, Drinkwater,

it's not as if they are bringing in

guys we have not heard of. The price

of a lot of these players is a lot

of money for them so there are no

excuses. Yes they have changed it

around but they should still have

enough.

to get anything at all will be

difficult and for a team like

Norwich who have faltered of late, I

am hearing Jarreau might have

blessed in the last couple days so

that another player who could get

goals who has gone -- I'm hearing

Jerome might have left in the last

couple of days. But this man, 21,

22, he can play in the hole as ten,

can play as eight, he can take the

free and corners. He has got

quality, he's not particularly

strong but he's intelligent. Good on

the ball under pressure. Not putting

him in the same category but he's

very much like a Eriksen at Spurs,

he has a good footballing brain. I

think if he plays well the rest of

the Norwich players will follow suit

so a lot of pressures on his

shoulders as a young lad but he will

be fine.

The players are out and

warming up, normally we would be

kicking off in about 5-10 minutes,

can that destabilise you as a

player?

I don't think it makes any

difference. I am sure we have all

been delayed.

You have your routine.

You have time to adjust. It's not an

issue going the other way. It's more

an issue if you only have 45 minutes

to get ready for things. Going the

other way you have an extra 15

minutes but it shouldn't be a

problem.

No, I

am in favour. I think it's a good

option to improve the football. To

solve some strange situations,

especially if there are big mistakes

from the referee. It's right, this

way.

He has done very well at

Chelsea, winning the league in his

first season, what is the view in

Italy of the man?

He is very well

rated. I think at the moment

everyone is missing him in the

national team. Painfully missing

him. He has a very good reputation

as a coach. Wherever he has been

here has always done well.

Do you

sense he is perhaps not quite that

happy at the moment? Definitely

seems something is going on.

Something is going on, murmurings,

you hear about players not being

happy and training ground feuds.

But

you only hear those things when

results start going wrong.

but I think they have got more than

enough, look at the bench, Eden

Hazard, Morata, Kante.

But we have

seen it at this that Boka before,

things can change very quickly.

Does

that come from upstairs?

In his

interviews when he is asked about

players coming or going his response

is you will have to ask somebody

else who makes those decisions. We

think we know that has happened in

the past with bringing players in

but as we said things can change at

this football club particularly very

quickly which is why you go back to

the point is that this is a very

important game tonight.

It certainly

is. There is a bit of an alarm drill

going on at the moment, I got with

you can hear that but it is putting

Franco off. One of the most

consistent players here is

Azpilicueta. He is one of those

unsung heroes but he's not only at

very good defender but he creates a

lot of chances as well.

He has been

unbelievable and he's probably one

of the most rated players by all the

managers. I remember a quote from

Mourinho seeing if he had 11

Azpilicueta's he would win any

league in the world. To be fair he's

been incredible. Not only defending,

which we knew. But also going

forward.

I think he would get in any

team in the Premier League. I think

he's that good.

He's a regular every

week, Saturday, Wednesday, whatever,

you know what you will get with him.

It's a real quality, a full-back who

is very good at defending or is very

good at going forward but he seems

to do both perfectly. Bull I think

also the system suits him perfectly.

You

have named a strong team, how

important is this cup run for the

club and how much are you enjoying

your first experience of the FA Cup?

Pretty important. Today we are not

the favourites so we can enjoy the

game but I am a deep believer in cup

competitions and we look forward to

the game. We want a good performance

and the best result we can get.

It's

been a busy week in the transfer

market for Norwich. A few players

departing but of course most notable

is Alex Prichard. When you have such

a big player leaving the how

disruptive is that?

Yes, January is

always a bit annoying. It's also

easy to focus the players on the

sporting side and on the games, to

be honest we lost a really key

player, he was pretty important for

us but it's like this so sometimes

you have to accept such decisions

and it's up to me to find solutions

to be successful with all the other

lads and hopefully we will be today.

You have spoken in the press about a

special plan for this game, do you

want to share that with us?

Not yet.

I think it's quite normal when you

face an opponent who has such high

individual quality compare to us, it

is necessary to be there with good

basement behaviour but also create a

special plan and to further was

planned with a good performance on

the pitch. For that you need a big

game and perhaps Chelsea is not

there so you have a chance but we'll

see how it develops.

some successful German managers

coming in. Jurgen Klopp, David

Wagner. It's not quite happened for

Daniel Farke.

Not yet. He's trying

to find the right players in the

right places. Whether it's affected

the first team are not but there has

been a few changes in the coaching

staff, the younger coaches, the

academy coaches, a lot of them have

gone and I don't know that affected

the coming through but I do believe

it's a very good football club and

he has a very good chance tonight to

pick the right side. The positive,

don't here and try to soak up the

pressure because I think you will

get picked off and concede goals.

They have to have their seniors

really taking charge of the game. A

management is very important. Two

seniors on the bench that I believe

will play. Hoolahan and Tettey have

a big part to play in this game.

huge audience to go out and show off

a little.

I think so, they will be

disappointed they did not take the

opportunity in the first game when

again Chelsea played a weakened

Guess only if

the refereeing team make a clear and

obvious error in one of four key

situations. We review all goals to

make sure they are correct. All red

card situation is not second yellow

cards, just direct red cards we look

at penalties given and not and then

we would at mistaken identity. Four

specific situations.

Who decides,

the referee himself or are you guys

in the centre?

It can be both, the

referee can ask for something to be

looked at or at the VAR will Matt

Riley pick up on things so between

them they should not be anything

missed. The referee is constantly in

touch, you must have something of

radio linkup? Yes it's like having a

fifth official. Constant dialogue

with all four officials so they can

keep the dialogue through the game.

It has already been used in a couple

of games and quite successfully

wouldn't you say?

I would, in terms

of we know we are starting on a

journey and trying to train

everybody, get players and

spectators used to it but incidences

in all three games we have used it

so far, last night the first review,

and I think it's been well received

in terms of showing VAR has the

potential to help us improve

accuracy.

How do people watching at

home tonight for example now when

VAR is about to happen?

The referee

can make two signals. If the referee

is in dialogue you will put his

finger in his ear which means they

are checking the situation. The

majority of cases all the check will

do will come from the on field

decision because we are looking for

obvious mistakes.

One downside we

have seen is that people at the

ground itself can sometimes be not

aware of what is going on, how can

we help them?

It takes about 30-40

seconds on average to check an

incident but we have seen the

decision is taking longer than that,

up to 100 seconds in one case. For

spectators it's about getting used

to it. Looking for the referee

making the cheque signal, looking

for the referee to make the review

signal. I think over time we will

work out how best for everyone in

the stadium to understand the

decision made but it will take time

to get there.

It might take time but

it's for the good of the game isn't

it? Getting some big mistakes right.

I know you not totally convinced.

Eugh I'm not. It worked last night

because it was matter-of-fact.

The

problem is when it goes to someone's

opinion but the added that is its

obvious ones but then who says it is

obvious? That would be my...

If

there is a degree of doubt they

stick with the referee decisions?

Let's see. It's very early.

I think

there still might be mistakes. But

it clears up the obvious ones, this

for example.

I spoke to might and

what I asked him was if that was to

happen 20 yards further out from

where it happened, one-on-one with

the goalkeeper, take it back 20

yards, he's broken the offside trap,

then what happens? One-on-one with

the goalkeeper, great chance for him

to score, what happens? He said the

referee will blow up an gift of

sight because it's too far away from

the goal.

That linesmen will be

forever remembered.

I think it's

bang on, I think we've got to have

it. There are too many decisions

which are too difficult, they need

help and it's good they got that, I

am a massive fan of the way rugby do

it. They get it on, have a look and

get it right. They need help, the

officials.

Franklaw, it has been

taking place in Italy, how has it

been received?

A lot of the

decisions have been changed and it's

been received very well. It's not

perfect we were talking before there

are some clubs complaining because

now they are seeing sometimes it

takes too long but it's not that.

It's taking a lot of problems. It's

not perfect, not all the time it

works. But in the majority of the

problems...

I know it is still early

but they have to let the crowd know

what is going on and that will get

better.

I agree with that.

I wonder

if they will show it on the big

screen?

That could cause all sorts

of problems. But it would be nice if

everybody knew what was going on.

Maybe the referee can have a

microphone like rugby?

They can come

over the tannoy and explain, looking

at it again, whatever it may be.

Exactly, we will see if anything

happens tonight, probably not but

you never know. Time to reflect on

the devastating loss of Cyril Regis,

the man whose career inspired so

many.

Cyrille Regis, the youngster spotted

has come in from semiprofessional

football to really blast his way

into the top.

In the 70s racist abuse was common

and the Black Country was very

troubled.

As a kid listening on the

TV I did not know what was going on

but you could your monkey chanting.

Suddenly all this white crowd and

there was a black player along with

two of his team-mates transfixing is

all. It did nothing but good.

Lovely

piece of control and what a great

shot, one of the goals of the

You had to

let your ability speak freely

without the strength of character

those guys had, then people like me

would not have had the opportunity.

That is it, Coventry City's first

major trophy in a years.

To every

player in that dressing room he was

a role model and he was to me. God

must have been short of a striker

and he's chosen the right one.

I

remember my uncle Cyrille, everyone

was proud of what he was doing and

the strides he was making not just

for our family but for black people

in England. One of the first black

players to play for England and deal

with the challenges he had to face

with such courage and maturity.

Here is Regis. Regis is going it

alone and he's got the power, does

he have the boys? He has! What a

magnificent goal by Cyrille Regis.

He was part of changing people's

attitudes towards black players. His

contribution is immense and

sometimes we don't realise what

conclusions on the makes until sadly

they have passed away.

I suppose in some way is people who

are not familiar with how the game

was then will be wondering, why are

you talking about this guy because

of the colour of his skin but I

played in that era when there was so

much racial abuse, so much from the

terraces and supporters. I

experienced many of those things

from team-mates myself. But Cyrille

treated it all with such dignity and

paved the way for black players to

follow.

He was... There was Brendan

and was lorry and was there but

there was something about Cyrille

that we mentioned, we're the same

age, Ian Wright, Les Ferdinand, Mark

Bright, we were the players that

look that those players thought we

want to be like you, VAR Regis was

my hero, all I wanted to do was play

like him, back it up and score

goals, I used to watch all the time

and if it wasn't for him I would

never have been a professional

footballer. He is going to be

missed.

It's terribly sad for

everyone in the game.

I first came

across Cyrille when I went on trial

at West Bromwich Albion as a

13-year-old. I remember Cyrille

walking into the dressing room and I

looked at him and thought what an

athlete you are. Then having met him

a few times after that he was every

bit as impressive as he was as a

person as a footballer. When you

hear the outpouring of grief over

the last 24 hours you can see how

much he meant, not only at football

but as a person.

Sometimes you think

if death could give us 24 hours

notice so that people would see, if

he himself could see how appreciated

she was as an individual and as a

footballer.

It's very touching. I

can see what impression he has left

behind and I think it's one of those

great things.

He wasn't just, it

wasn't just black people, it was

young players of our era that used

to go I want to be like him. There

was only a small minority of racist

idiots that are very, very ignorant

and uneducated. The rest loved him.

Black-white, they loved him. For the

right reasons. He won and lost with

dignity and he taught a lot of

people how to play the game.

He was

a real gentoo weaves a real legacy

without question. Bringing our

attention back the game, there has

been a delay because of district

line problems meaning the kick-off

I can tell you

how I hope it's going to go.

Chelsea, the previous game, I know

they made a lot of changes, giving

often play and they should have done

better. This is an opportunity for

those, Batshuayi is one of them.

think it will be a very difficult

game particularly of knowledge are

the year. It will be a tall order

matches as that put more focus on

this game. Antonio Conte's war of

words with Jose Mourinho making a

rather more headlines than his team

in recent weeks. The man in the

middle is Graham Scott, his first

game at Stamford Bridge in over

three years.

Big task for Norwich City tonight

and perhaps as much as anyone they

will be looking to James Maddison.

I

thought Norwich graded a lot of

opportunities in the first game but

these two need to be more clinical

in the final birdie to have any

chance of going through.

you think he has a key role this

evening?

He is the unsung hero of

the team. Antonio Conte will be

thinking the only way we can lose

this game is through complacency and

Azpilicueta is the type of player

that will not allow any of that.

Interesting night for Batshuayi his

50th appearance for Chelsea but

clearly the manager doesn't really

fancy him, not many starts in 18

months in the Premier League and it

looks like he'll be going elsewhere.

That's why it's interesting for him

also. When you go through these

transfer sagas, and Batshuayi's name

has been mentioned, the spotlight is

going to be on him. CFE performs in

a way that says he wants to stay at

Chelsea -- seat if he performs.

Caballero is in goal again. He has

started every cap domestic game

until the last game in the Carabao

Cup. And Zimmermann safely seeing it

out of play. Antonio Conte, who made

some positive noises about the video

assistant referee. The Arsenal

against Chelsea game had that as

well.

I think there's a lot of

positivity about it, as long as it's

used in the right way and not too

much. I think in that game it was

used to much. Trial and error, and

I'm sure they'll get it right.

idea is that it is only on fields

decisions that are perceived as

clearly wrong that will change

rather than the referee constantly

wanting reassurance that he's made

the right decision but it will

him. I think he made his debut

He has played three League

cameo against Huddersfield in the

Premier League. As it so far. He

made his international debut for

Wales in November. Still just 17

years of age. He is one to give an

eye for Chelsea. Hanley sending it

way over to the far side of the

field. Jamal Lewis is a young player

worth keeping an eye on for Norwich

City. He made his debut three days

before Christmas. He is an under 19

international for Northern Ireland,

for whom they have high hopes.

The ball flick forward there from

Vrancic. The thing about Norwich in

the first match, against Chelsea, I

think in the first half in

particular they had quite a lot of

play and they looked quite good

going for much -- forward but they

didn't have the end product.

Sometimes when you go down the

leagues, you can lacked the clinical

edge. You can see that he once

people to go forward and that's what

Norwich need. If they get the chance

to have a strike at goal they have

to be clinical.

Pedro almost ended

up on the substitutes bench there.

He was nudged over the touchline.

Pedro and Willian should be fairly

fresh having played half an hour at

the weekend. As often as not they

have been forced to come off the

bench rather than starting matches.

in the final third. It has taken

time to settle, I still think they

have a good player.

Yes, we haven't

seen the powerful and assertive

displays he showed for Monaco last

year yet in a Chelsea shirt. You'd

great I have to say. Norwich will be

was a tremendous result from them at

the weekend, a 1-0 victory over

Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Not the most exciting first half but

Norwich will be more than satisfied,

they are in it.

They have grown into

the game after a slow start when

Chelsea dominated possession.

themselves into the game and grown

in confidence as it's gone on but

from a Chelsea point of view it is

nowhere near good enough. You have

got players out there who should be

trying to prove our point and make a

point to the manager but they are

not at this moment. It's too slow,

they cannot build up any momentum.

Too many touches on the ball, no

pace to the game. As the half has

gone on Norwich have been the better

side.

I think they have earned the

right is the game has gone on,

thinking hold on, we might have a

chance because Chelsea have not been

important in the final third they

have been poor. Reed and Vrancic

getting a bit of the ball, they have

been disciplined, getting behind the

ball. Talking about Maddison before

the game and he's hardly had a kick

but he's doing his job. They are

going, 0-0. For them that's a good

result at half-time.

what is wrong?

They are not putting

enough quality in the last 30

metres, not creating enough chances

with consistency. You can see one

chance and then the next chance will

be after five, six minutes. That's

not enough to break down and

organised defence like today's

Norwich. They need to put something

more and some of the players they

have to try to do something more,

more responsibility in the last 30

metres.

But they should have enough

with Pedro and Willian and

Batshuayi, they should have enough

to score goals, they have got in the

final third then it falls down.

Batshuayi needs to improve a lot

especially holding the ball. I

understand, as a striker, you don't

have enough space but there is a

moment where you hold the ball and

you bring other players into play.

You never did this.

the defenders and they are finding

it too easy marking him because poor

touch, that a simple ball at this

level where Chelsea want him to be

he has to do better. Similar sort of

run, not offside, the linesman said

he is but he's not. That is the run

and that they should be in the first
