Evening. With August barely 11 days old,

we've got an early treat for you with our first dose of Cup football

of the new season. Coming up tonight, highlights from

the first round of the Carling Cup. With me, casting his eye on a

cracking opening round, League Cup finalist, Leroy Rosenior.

But not every tie managed to take place off course with the games at

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Charlton and Bristol City called off due to

recent events. So, that left us with 29 games to

get through this evening which produced a whopping. 109 goals.

Round One drew a few tasty derbies out of the hat, including one in

Nottingham, as County crossed the Trent to take on neighbours Forest.

The two sides dished up a classic. West Yorkshire, which had its own

local affair to sort out last night, as Leeds United welcomed Bradford

City to Elland Road. The first round was full of goals

and upsets. We'll bring you the best of the

action from around the country. There was plenty of excitement in

Nottingham when the draw threw up a first round tie between Forest and

County at the City Ground. It's 17 years since the two last

played a competitive match against each other.

For the record, that match was won by the Magpies so, unsurprisingly,

there was quite an atmosphere with there was quite an atmosphere with

over 21,000 inside the City Ground. Steve McClaren's Forest had Lee

Camp and Chris Gunter away on international duty, so Paul Smith

and Brendon Moloney were brought into the side.

For County, Lee Hughes was passed fit to play.

Anderson got something on that, but not quite enough. Quality break

from Forest, lovely ball in by the American. Anderson, with his left

foot, can only skim it wide. It's good delivery. Headed out, on by

Findley. Kelly has it. No sign of nerves at all amongst the Notts

players. A great save by Paul Smith. He got his 50th goal at the weekend,

Lee Hughes, almost made it 51. What a great ball in. A marvellous stop

enough possibly. Forest really struggling here. Off the crossbar

from Bishop. Well, the Forest goal under seige there. Smith the hero,

initially. He didn't get anywhere near enough on that. Bishop's first

effort wasn't so clever. His second was so close, again, to giving

Notts County the lead. It looks like he has written an essay

already, Steve McClaren. Chambers. Lee Hughes making life so

unComminges forbl for him. Chambers so rattled he has fouled Lee Hughes.

It's a soft foul. The assistant saw it as one. So far, the delivery

from Alan Sheehan has been terrific, 15 minutes gone. Sheehan to whip

this in left-footed. Deep delivery. Again Forest don't deal with it at

all Cleverley. Sheehan again. All too easy. What is the right foot

like? Not quite so clever. It's still not a bad ball. Surely a goal.

Notts County take the lead! Mike Edwards with the goal, 16 minutes

gone. It has been coming since kick-off. Well the left foot has

been dangerous all night. It was a right-footed ball. Forest's

defending was absolutely awful. Mike Edwards went away celebrating.

It might have been Pearce who got the final shot. Pearce who

initially was in. He knows all about the importance of this game.

He said, when he heard the draw, he had tears in his eyes. McGugan. He

goes down. Referee saw that. Free- kick given. No card for Christian

Pearce. M It won't help him if he goes out tonight against Notts

County. Notts have six in the wall. It's McGugan. Oh, what a goal. What

a magnificent goal by Lewis McGugan. They needed some magic. He's

produced it. He won the free-kick. He scored the free-kick. What a

free-kick. Postage stamp stuff, right in the top left hand corner,

Stewart Nelson never looked like Maloney. Sheehan backing off. In

towards Reid. How did that not go in. Somehow, Stuart Nelson got

something up to it. Even he doesn't know how he kept that one out.

Where was the Notts' marking here. Cohen. Forest looking good for an

opening goal here. Oh, what a goal by Findley. Offside flag. His joy

cut short. He's onside there, in between the two defenders. That

should have counted. Great ball in by Cohen. What a header from

Findley. It should be 2-1 Forest. Now, part of the coaching staff

here at the City Ground, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. In towards

Findley! Goal! Denied in the first half, not in the second though.

Robbie Findley does have his first goal in the red shirt of Nottingham

Forest. The American international, Robbie Findley, is on the end of

Andy Reid's quality cross. He gave him too much time. Findley on the

back post able to beat Nelson. Despite their great start to the

second half, Notts County are behind for the first time this

evening. That looked like a foul. It's one here for Findley.

Magnificent stop. He got everything behind that, Robbie Findley. Stuart

Nelson with a vital save that keep Notts in this game. Morgan win it

is for Forest, back in by. Westcarr, goal. That's the story. Craig

Westcarr. The former Forest Academy man. The youngest player ever to

play for Nottingham Forest, draws Notts County level. He comes

towards the Nottingham Forest fans in this corner of the ground to

celebrate. He's only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, but

Craig Westcarr will have dreamt about this last night. It's a

brilliant finish. Martan Allen's gamble to throw on Craig Westcarr,

pays dividends. What a ball. Hughes is there. What a save, Paul Smith.

What a stunt that was. Lee Hughes, so close to surely winning it for

Notts. Terrific save by Paul Smith. We're the ones in red, boys. Martin

Allen has taken his team to the age of the penalty area. At the end of

the ground where the Notts County fans are ranked. Different

techniques by different managers, who will win through? Westcarr

against Morgan. It's all a bit tight. That's a great ball, Lee

to play in this one. He picked up an ankle injury at the weekend.

Martin Allen said, "he won't be involved". It's the old boy, 35-

year-old, Lee Hughes, with his 5 1st goal for the club, who might be

sending Notts County through to Round Two. Who would be a football

manager, eh? We are almost there on the time. On my watch, eight

seconds. Boateng floats it forward. Morgan, what a goal! What a goal,

Wes Morgan. Wes Morgan released by Notts County, at 15, has just

scored the best goal of his life. What a goal. We thought McGugan's

in the first half was good. This, I think, was even better. The tie

still has to be won. It now goes to penalties. Jonathan Greening, one

of the summer signings by Steve the Forest fans as Craig Westcarr

makes his way forward. Can he put County ahead in the shoot-out? Yes,

he can. A shut run up for Tudgay. And, it's just in. Nelson got a

touch, but not enough of one. Next up, for Notts County, Karl Hawley.

Hawley against Smith.-1, Notts County. Joe Garner strides forward

for Nottingham Forest. Another good his misfortune this evening. A

chance for Forest to go in front then, Robbie Findley. Next up, for

Notts County, Alan Sheehan. This to level the shoot-out. 3-3. We have

seen some good penaltys. It looked like Nelson was going to save it, I

think Sheehan thought he was. Gorge bow tenge. Nerves of steel --

George Boateng. Nerves of steel. Saved. Nelson keeps it out. Lee

Hughes, who thought he won the game for him in extra-time. It's Hughes,

he's missed as well. That sun Bishop, the Notts County captain

misses, Forest will go through after all. Over the bar. Forest,

somehow, have squeezed through. It reminded me of a boxing match.

We were exchanging blows. We were lucky tonight and we stayed on our

feet. I up and pleased both sets of supporters had a good go. It was

held their home in -- own. Yes. They play some good football. They

are out of the Carling Cup, but they have a lot what to offer.

Steve McClaren has been frustrated with the transfer of market. But he

has added some one today. Yes, he is a great goal scorer. Lots of

goals as well in tonight's only Carling Cup titled Between Oxford

and Cardiff City. Cardiff took the lead through their winner. --

great left foot. He can definitely score. Cardiff had a chance to make

Burnley forced into 30 extra minutes and seemed determined to

get the job done. Rodriguez followed beat example and set his

sights on a hat-trick. The final scoreline looked convincing.

Macclesfield's have their striker Sinclair to thank for their safe

passage to round up to. The Tigers fell to learn from their first half

mistake and will once again caught flat-footed. -- were once again.

No excuses from Steve Cotterill as Portsmouth suffered defeat for the

first time in a decade. Their passage to round to swerve -- was

secured by a header. Will Buckley has made an impressive start to his

Brighton Korea. He made a defence against a stubborn Gillingham side.

Ashley Barnes pop the championship club through against their former

landlords. -- port. Two goals in the minutes of this

match spring to life. There was a debut goal from the new Southampton

player. With the championship side sitting back, the ball was held up

before Ian Norris picked up the slack and scored. 1-1 and going on.

The sanest retook the lead 10 minutes later with a moment of real

quality. Those free-kicks are becoming the striker's trade mark.

Despite a spirited effort from the opposition, the game was put to bed

when Richard chav Glogue got clear. -- Richard Chappell. And he played

a bigger role in the 4th. Torquay were down and out of the Cup for

Nigel Adkins will be more than pleased with that. The Championship

clubs were dumped. Yes. An amazing result. Gary Johnson will be

delighted with that. Exactly what happened last season. Yes. They got

great results, but it cost them in terms of their league form. There

is a winner from Paul Turnbull there. They know that they have got

to concentrate. A great result for Machin's -- Macclesfield a way to

Hull. But Cup win would be great for them. It would be invaluable.

Sinclair finishes it really well there. If they can get one of those

13 Premier League clubs that going to be drawn next, it will be great

for Macclesfield. It might help them for the rest of the season.

also has been a great day for Lawrie Sanchez, the new man in

charge at Bolton. We saw two outstanding performances there and

Leicester City got a hat-trick with their new play and who has not cost

millions. Absolutely. He was at Brentford last year and seems to

have matured a little bit more. His goals are great. Leicester and the

young players to come in and do the work. Earlier we saw that thrilling

derby from Nottingham. There was Nunez! What a chance for Leeds.

It's a chance that Nunez could not take. Best chance of the night so

with a run forward. Bradford West take the lead. A goal, created by

Stewart. To the delight of the Bradford West supporters and the

League Two side are in front, surging run here from Mark Stewart.

Compton getting there, ahead of penalty, still going. This is

Clayton, Nunez. Leeds are back level, less than 30 seconds into

the second half. Look at him, he's unmarked in the area, the No 20.

Despite the fact that about half a dozen Bradford West defenders

converged on him, neither were able winning the ball, and only just

putting it wide. Here's Flynn. Bradford West are back in front.

second time in this match. Terrific cross in. And, McCormack

More from Tuesday night's games then and it's safe to say that

history didn't favour Shrewsbury before their game against Derby

County at Pride Park. A League Cup match on the road 19

Derby were left reeling by Shrewsbury's stung first half at

Pride Park. Marvin Morgan's header shocked the home fan as the club

took the lead after 16 minutes. Ainsworth supplied the corner. He

continued to cause havoc. This cross went over the line by James

Collins to stretch their lead. They were sitting pretty by half-time.

The home defence had no answer to Ainsworth's performance. From the

cross, Morgan helped himself to his second of the night. Derby pulled

themselves togtd during the break and sparked hopes of a fight back

straight after the restart. Chris McGuire timed his run to perfection.

The Championship club were forced to wait a long time for the goal

which put the result back in the balance. Theo Robinson made the

most of his chance. By then there were 12 minutes left. Shrewsbury

held on to their lead for a the architect of a Cup upset as his

side knocked Barnsley out in the first round. In charge of Oakwell,

the boot is on the other foot. Izak Reid's cross found Danny Carlton

who gave Morecambe fans hope of a place in Round Two. They wrapped

who finished with his first goal for the club and first win for the

new boss. Having earned his side three points on opening day, Adam

Mozika effort had Joe Murphy at full stretch, no prizes for

guessing who was lurking. Lowe, carrying Bury into Round Two, for

players going into the game against Tranmere but were gifted the effect

- perfect start when James Coppinger was up ended die Bakayo.

Chris Browne stepped up and scored his first goal for Rovers. Ryan

mason got the second. The South Yorkshire side could have been

further ahead as they missed several chances. Kyle Bennett's

curler on debut was the exspla maition mark on the performance. --

this a more prosperous debut. He got the one goal. He was off the

mark after 14 minutes. The Lions new boy had chances to double his

tally. He found himself in a perfect spot to meet Stewart's

cross. The woodwork kept Plymouth in the tie. Matt Le Cointe went

close to snatching an equal Iiser. That led to panic. Le Cointe lobbed

the ball in towards zubzub. The Londoners survived. --Zubar.

Stevenage took their League One bow with a goalless draw at the weekend.

What a contrast this time. David Ball put Peterborough into the lead

in the 16th minute. Lawrie Wilson did all the hard work on the wing

for the home team before finding Stacy Long to level the scores.

Graham Westley was much less satisfied with their defending.

Ball was allowed the room to crack in his second of the night. Michael

Bostwick's piledriver appeared to get a touch on the way through,

taking the tie into extra-time. Six minutes into that, Boyd came up

with something special. The fans' cheers were premature. With three

minutes to grks Chris Beardsley made it 3-3 and seemed to have the

match heading for penalties. There was only one. Right at the death,

Boyd tumbled under Jon Ashton's challenge, Steven Stevenage knew

Going on where he left on last season. Is it more than a

coincidence that kb league Two sides are doing well against

Championship sides? I don't think. So they are going to stadiums where

they enjoy themselves. They are putting in the hard work as well. I

feel a lot of clubs at home, the pressure is on. They have nothing

to lose these sides. They have gone away. They started off the game

well. Playing surface this time of year is great. Exactly. Once you

get your noses in front in any game it will always be difficult

especially when there is pressure and changes to those Championship

clubs. Put put them into that melting pot and it makes up for a

the Carling Cup where the goals up just kept coming.

Danny Wilson went back to his old club determined not to be

embarrassed. Quinn headed it United into a first-half lead. -- headed.

Injury meant Sweeney couldn't take part in extra time. Hardwick Hall

battled on with 10 men. -- Hartlepool.

Crewe could not have made a worse start. There was a horrifying

moment for one of their defenders. Preston were backtracking as well.

By half-time, the bad start was all but forgotten. The underdogs were

in front. But all Crewe's good work was undone in the final six minutes.

Danny De Vine lost out to a deflection. Preston pinched

bitchery and the last minutes and the conclusion was dramatic. --

victory at the last minute. John Coleman will not be marking 12

years in charge at Accrington with a chance that the Cup. There was

along run by Barcham before he decided to go it alone.

A clash between two sides looking for a lift after opening day

defeats. Ruben read squeezed home the penalty. There was a terrific

kick from McGovern. Dhi Qhar lock keeper was the shoot-out hero with

two vital saves. The home crowd was screaming for a

free kick. Four minutes into stoppage time, Tom Nichols put the

second on a plate for Chris Shepherd.

Roy -- Rochdale have ventured past their second rounds only a couple

of times. The North Derbyshire side nearly won it before the end of

half-time. There was a venomous strike from Dean Morgan. The teams

were level after 90 minutes and extra time was needed. Jack Lester

went down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in

pointing to the spot. Whitaker took it and scored his second for the

evening. Rochdale full back for a second time. -- fought back. There

was some lovely football and crimes -- grinds held with the win.

Colchester were caught cold. Wycombe had the lead. Chances of

success did improve when the advantage was doubled. Ian

Henderson continues to catch the fire after bagging two goals on

Saturday. He let fly with devastating effect. A blank second

half meant both sides were in for a long night. Colchester did get the

opportunity to go ahead for the first time. Wycombe miserable run

seems to continue. The home side's passage to round up to was finally

secured by Ben Hardy. Port Vale took the lead against the

League One title favourites. The home side's optimism lasted only

five minutes. By half-time, authority had been asserted. A goal

was a blocked before Novak poached his second. -- blocked. Not to be

out done, Roberts took the score to four. Huddersfield home and dry,

though it mildly disappointed to let another goal slip seven minutes

from the end. -- slipped. On the strength of this it's hard

to imagine that these two sides were in the same division last

season. And once Bournemouth took the lead through Mark Pugh's

deflected free kick the result was never in doubt. Three minutes later

the advatage was doubled. A set play from the training ground

caught the Daggers napping, Shaun Cooper benefitting from a big

deflection, that left goalkeeper James Shea wrong footed. Pugh was

again involved for the third, this time laying in Liam Feeney who

arrived on cue to convert. The Cherries were enjoying their cup

outing and Lyle Taylor who 12 months ago was playing for non-

league side Concord Rangers made it four. A memorable goal not for it's

quality but because it was his first in professional football.

Having had to wait 13 games to hit the net once Taylor need just five

more minutes to get a second. That capped a great night for the home

side but one Dagenham and Redbridge will be happy to forget.

Cheltenham have never gone beyond the second round so when Luke

Summerfield got lucky just before the half hour perhaps that raised

hopes of a longer run this year. The League Two club almost held on

for a half-time lead but the Dons hit back just before the break. Sam

Baldock reacting quickest to put the travellers back on terms. Karl

Robinson knew his men would have to improve in the second half and he

got the response he was looking for less than a minute after the kick

off, Baldock set up Jabo Ibehre to edge the Dons into the lead. They

continued to crank up the pressure, just past the hour, Dean Lewington

crashed in a third to make life comfortable. That gave the Dons

enough time to add more gloss to the score-line. Ibehre found space

on the right and then delivered the perfect cross for Angelo Balanta to

seal their first League Cup win in the coast, establishing a lead

halfway through the first half. It wasn't all plain sailing boat. At

half-time the scores were level. But biggest win of the first round

so far achieved by Bournemouth and that is not bad. -- the biggest.

They are always going to score and that was a good goal. A great

confidence booster after the weekend. Yes, that would have put

them on the back foot. However, they are bright and breezy and they

will come back. We saw bursts of Huddersfield at their best when

they took on Port Vale. That will help Lee Clark. They were

frustrated. You expect Huddersfield to do well. That was a great strike.

You know that they will slowly but surely come to the fore. I had to

look twice about this statistic about Exeter. That was their first

League Cup win since August 1993. There was more added meaning to the

meeting with Yeovil. Yes. It is a year today since the tragic death

of Adam Stansfield. He was a great player and it should be flagged up.

Do you think Exeter would have been wary of the League Cup? They would

not have had a clue until afterwards. If it was mentioned, it

would have been kept quiet. There are a handful of first round ties

to be played. There are new dates for the gains that were called off.

-- gains. Also the second draw will take place on Thursday evening and

that is when the 13 Premier League clubs enter the fray. A big
