Welcome to best of this weeks Carling Cup games and the stakes

have been raised b, as 13 Premier League sides tern the second round.

We will see how they get on in the company of Leroy Rosenior. We will

have the results of other mae matches. There is plenty to look

forward to. With no European add venture or Liverpool they have

their eye on domestic silverware. Exeter were the team in their way

this evening. Brighton are a team on the up, unbeaten so far, Gus

Poyet's men see how far they have progressed when Steve Bruce brought

bring you the best goals and the biggest upsets from what has been a

busy couple of days in the Carling Cup. We start tonight as St James'

Park and a game between Exeter City and Liverpool. A six place finish

the Premier League last season wasn't enough for Liverpool to

qualify for Europe so they were forced to play the second round of

this competition for the first time in 12 years. Exeter were bracing

themselves for a tough night. When you consider their win so far this

campaign came in the first round of Exeter sparked a memorable cup run

for Liverpool. They hope history is about to repeat itself tonight.

Kenny Daglish was among the scorers then, now he is hoping to end five

seasons for Liverpool without any silverware. League One Exeter have

their audition for giant killers. They are without Tully. Only one of

that team cost any money at all, and the Spaniard Bauza leads the

line up. Eight changes for the team that beat Arsenal at the weekend.

Swar reds makes it tonight. Three teenagers in the back row and a

Liverpool surely in the Third Round, with his third for the club. His

first of the season, and once again Suarez was the creator. When it

came back to Carroll there was no stopping that. He has seen his team

pick up one point from four league games this season. They haven't

really ever troubled Liverpool in left. That was a good save. He has

had his nervy moments tonight, the Exeter goalkeeper. He reacted

quickly here. He knew Downing wanted to step inside. He caught

Skrtel. And the League One team have an opportunity to register one

back. He did leave his leg there. No question. Daniel Nardiello,

former Manchester United trainee, has the opportunity to score

against Liverpool. And one he takes. Exeter do have a goal. It is Daniel

Nardiello's first for the season. 13 in his opening campaign last

year with the club. Just hammered that straight down the middle.

Something for all to cheer. In and Something for all to cheer. In and

out of the ground.. When you are drawn away from home in against a

team which is lower down the league people look for a banana skin. They

were 3-0 up, and that is a great credit to them. The only reason

they got the positive result because of their attitude. I am

pleased the way we play. Got a goal, didn't get near a result, but I

fixture and how looked as a club. I am very pleased with it all. Suarez

statement of intent, particularly with his team selection. I was

surprised by the selection. Were you? Suarez on the bench against

Arsenal because he wz was tired. For him to start and the likes of

Adam and hend song, I thought it was a very strong side, and, you

know, he talks about attitude, but Suarez for me epitomised the tued.

You tro give him credit. You get porn player, cup tie at Exeter they

might not fancy. He was up for the challenge That was a great strike.

That makes the goalkeeper and the person on the line. He is aware,

although his first touch is out, straight into Rodriguez's path.

This is a great nutmeg. He powers away from him, and he gets a clip

at the end for his trouble. Great finish by Carroll for his first

goal of the season. He drove and chased back he did everything. He

did everything at pace. Look. There is that smile. He is having a good

time. You know, you wouldn't think that going down to the south-west

would you. We talk about someone who is jaded, six goals in five

games if you include the internationals, he is coming back-

in to form, despite being a bit jaded at first? How often do you

hear about player, they retired, they don't went to play. It doesn't

affect him at all. As for Exeter, they are not having the best of

starts in the division, what can they take away from that? For the

manager it is a welcome distraction. When things are aren't going well

in the league, it is nice to see players coming down to St James'

Park, it would have been good for the players and the supporters.

Good for their bank balance too. Our first stop is Goodison where

Everton in the past couple of weeks. Just before the half-hour,

Cresswell sent a shiver around the ground. Just three minutes later,

Cresswell was on the scoresheet again. But he had nothing to

Anichebe completed the turnaround. Barclay was relishing this taste of

first-team action. Arteta showed off his talent, and from 3-1 down

season before tonight, but three quick-fire goals meant a much

changed team made short work of their League One opponents. Rochina

was first on target with his first Rovers goal after just three

minutes. Rochina had another within 56 seconds. David Goodwillie

cleverly set up his striking partner for the second goal. With

defenders were just brushed aside by the Scottish international.

Substitute Morrison found space to sweep in an impressive the second

half consolation, but Rovers had the second round of the League Cup

but they made a bright start in their match at Bolton. Sinclair

gave them a deserved lead in the 11th minute. Despite playing some

Good to see the young players coming through, because that's what

they have to rely on because they have no money to spend. Blackburn,

they've lost to Villa and Wolves already this season but again, a

couple of young players will give Steve Keane a big lift for the

future. Tuncay is going to cause some excitement down at Bolton

because... Well, he's not even trained with the team for 10 days

and puts in an -- a performance like that. He's got ability. He

hasn't shown it at times but he certainly showed it last night. He

will add a little something different to Bolton, along with

Nigel Reo-Coker. There were two other games that were played

tonight. They involved two of Leroy's old clubs. But West Taman

Bristol City suffering shock exit. You wouldn't have thought up with

this start from Stanislav, a fantastic strike. At Aldershot,

give them credit, they really powered on. This good, driving run

with McNaught and being sent off on his debut as well. That was the

turning point for West Ham. seemed to be. We still expect with

10 men for them to do better. A lovely strike across the keeper

into the far post from Duddridge. It was all to play for. They

managed to push forward and create that winner. Danny Hylton. Yes.

That came in the 89th minute. It was all over for West Ham. It was a

poor result after getting into the semi-finals last year. A great

result for Dean Holdsworth, playing against his boyhood club with West

Ham. As for Bristol City, they came unstuck against Swindon Town.

thought Swindon deserved the result. Exam excellent finish there. --

big result for the manager. It's a bad result for Keith Millen. Turn

around for Swindon Town, lost to Oxford on Sunday and losing the

last three games, that's exactly what Paolo Di Canio was after.

Anything just to get the momentum going again. That will hit --

certainly help swing it. On to the Games from Tuesday night, and there

was an intriguing tie down at the Amex Stadium for Brighton who were

coming along well in their season back in the championship, and

Sunderland, who were looking for Larsen. The makeshift striker can't

powerful to handle. Gus Poyet, who was a runner up in this competition

as a player for Spurs in 2002. Six years later, as the assistant

big is the difference between losing, but we were good enough to

club of our stature, we are capable of winning five or six games. It's

not our year and unfortunately we have to lick our wounds and say

congratulations to Brighton. They were terrific on the night. They

played some really good stuff. started really well in the league

and we took it into the cup game tonight. We believe in the way we

play football and feel he whether we play we can go out and beat.

Mackail-Smith. This is something we've seen from Brighton. The whole

before he went to Sunderland. He was decisive. Both sides missed

chances. In the end it was Sunderland's own doing. They are

playing with a level of confidence and nothing seems to faze the

Seagulls at the moment. As for Sunderland, four wins out of these.

He hasn't got a lot of time to get them to gel together. He's used his

signings sparingly. The problem is they are playing all right, it's

just they can't score. As soon as they score they will start to get

that confidence. But the team at the moment are suffering because

they are not confident in hitting the back of the net on a regular

basis. More from Tuesday night, and the games involving the remaining

Premier League sides. We start with Swansea who face the Shrewsbury,

worse start in their attempt to thanks to the goalscoring prowess

of Morgan, who netted twice in the first round win at Pride Park and

nine changes from their weekend draw against Wigan, and sues very

exploited their lack of cohesion. Teri Cornell refused to be stopped

and then teed up Mark Wright. The home side on the way through to

their first third-round appearance for 18 years. Their victory made

the game, to my players, that the attitude and application would

determine the outcome, so I was delighted with the attitude and

application of my players and if I got that we have better player, we

got that we have better player, we expect to win and that is what

happened. These are good times to be a Wolves fan. I don't want to

put the knockers on them. They started well in the Premier League.

clubs. Let us round up the rest of the second round games. First up

Barnet, who knocked out Portsmouth in the opening round they were up

against another Championship side against another Championship side

hard. A game needing extra time to see off League Two opponents.

Rodriguez continued where he left off in round one, adding to the

four he scored against Burton and the tie should have been over,

thanks to the food work of Elliott. Never mind Elliott, Barnet should

have been on their bikes now, but like Burton two weeks accuse they

showed remarkable fighting spirit. Subpoena minutes from the end, a

glimmer of hope as the off side trap was beaten. The Championship

club's nerve were on edge. Holmes forced another 40 minutes. Last

time this happened, Burnley got themselves off the hook by racking

cross and Cowie took it into extra time. Conway was into his stride

now, with a different set of tricks to change the match. This time it

was all about pace, control, and above all, finishing. Huddersfield

looked broken, but still the home side weren't done. Miller was

denyed by Bennett but another Scot was following up for number five

and Cowie's right boot set the seal on a gripping contest. Forest have

an impressive League Cup pedigree. Four times winner. Miller has

stack's side on track for a thumping win. Their League One

hosts undone as Bull dragged down the striker. McGugan dest

despatched the spot kick. 2-0 and they had only been playing for six

minutes. A squad depleted by injuries dictated this has to be a

strong Forest line up. Even the single goal they conceded looked

unfortunate. If Lynch touched Louis it wasn't easy to see. But the

referee gave him the benefit of the doubt. Forest reeh affirmed their

superiority. Garner punishing the since their first round victory.

Shclupp put a hat-trick away. And the teenager showed his quality to

put the Foxes on their way at Gigg Lane. But this was far from

straightforward for Sven's side and Bury were level before the break.

And after the break it got better for the Shaker, Ryan Lowe's free-

With 20 minutes left, Leicester were back on terms. Gallagher

finding a route to beat the keeper and the visitors regained their

lead with another classy finish. This time Dyer deserved the

first Charlton goal since 2006. While the Londoners have enjoyed an

unbeaten start in League One, the Royals arrived having lost two in a

row. They had a lifeline when Morrison marked his debut with a

goal and the travelling mans must have thought extra time was looming

the Royals at bay. Let us look at the remaining ties now, of the

second round, the Third Round draw isn't until Saturday. Which of

those catches your eye? The first one victor Moses, at Wigan. McLeish

maybe going back. But that game at the top, Scunthorpe against

Newcastle. Can you see a possible upset? They got a good point

against Charlton. They clawed their way back. It depend on the side

Newcastle put out. But Glanford Park is a tough place to go. If

Alan can get them up for that game. That will be a big result for them.

Let us reflect on a couple of upsets we saw in that round up. One

for Bristol Rovers and a peach of a goal. A cracker, this one from

Harrold. He is a big centre forward. He wins the headers. He is better

than that. He showed it there. That is a terrific strike from the edge

of the box ch unstoppable. It came at a crucial time of the game.
