Good to have you with us as we reflect on another dramatic couple

You'll remember MK Dons and Shrewsbury proved the headline

makers last time out so who'll provide the main talking points from

round three, which involves those teams in European competition.

Steve's with me tonight to look at those who've made the final 16

With speculation continuing to mount around his future at Newcastle,

Alan Pardew could do with a victory against Crystal Palace tonight.

We've the best of the action from a cracking game at Selhurst Park.

Making giant strides in the Championship -

could Stuart Pearce's Nottingham Forest replicate their league form

On Tuesday night, Roberto Martinez, returned to where it all started

We will have reaction to all of the big games. Including a reunion with

one or two near misses. Plus news of the fourth round draw.

Well, despite coming back from two goals down to earn

a point against Hull on Saturday, Newcastle's struggles continue.

After a winless start to the season they're bottom of the Premier League

with a manager increasingly the focus of the fan's frustration.

But for Alan Pardew, it maybe wasn't the best time to be

facing a Crystal Palace side, reinvigorated since the arrival

of Neil Warnock and fresh from a terrific win at Everton on Sunday.

Neil Warnock made 11 changes including first starts for

Alan Pardew made six changes, including a first start

for the highly-rated 17-year-old Adam Armstrong.

One trick too many. That is a penalty. One trick too many but he

drew the defender into an unnecessary foul. He was off balance

when he made the challenge. Hat-trick scored in the last round.

Has the chance to put Crystal Palace ahead. Takes it! 1-0. Taken very

calmly indeed. Riviera! He has his goal at last.

Really good goal. He held it up, turned into the space and the

goalkeeper was blindsided by the defender and could not see. It is a

very clever finish. The referee has decided to give the free kick and

pass out an opportunity to play out wide to the left. I wonder whether

the referee could have let it go on. Only two men in the wall. Zipped

through and the keeper made sure. Really good free kick by Barry

Bannon. Sammy Ameobi. That has to be a penalty. McCarthy protests.

Crystal Palace invited the run. We will see what contact their wiles.

Look at the gap. When you go to ground in your own penalty area like

that, you are looking for trouble. Got nothing of the ball. Grey area

about this now. From the spot! At last they have got something to

smile about. Terrible start to the second half for the home side.

Really good penalty. Andy Johnson gets his first touch

back at Crystal Palace. He wanted to go initially. Gets the free kick.

McCarthy is forward. Dwight Gayle is in there. In it comes! Just wide. He

got up so very, very well. It would have been his second of the night.

Terrific leap. One of the smallest on the pitch and so very close.

Good drive. Fine save. Good passage of play. A good sign that a Young

English player, confident enough to lift his head, examined the options.

That was a nasty challenge. It was up for touch by the Newcastle player

and he stretched into the challenge, which is always a risk.

Barry Bannon sees the gap. And again! How about this! The team that

loves to leave it late at Selhurst Park. A new name for a goal-scorer

for Crystal Palace. Sunny chi chi on his debut. Dwight Gayle is fast

winning a reputation. He has won the free kick. He has to go. Zaha

holding onto him. That is a bit soft. That was rifled in. The future

looks tense again for Alan Pardew. Wilfried Zaha trying to trick his

way through. Dwight Gayle was offside. His fans who were late to

see the flag, were celebrating. He was offside.

They have got it! There he goes. Gambled to get across his man. And

the Crystal Palace youngster has scored the equaliser. Paul Dummett.

Can there be any more late drama? It was very long. The teenager puts it

back in. What is said! It won't count, the whistle has already

blown. It looked like an Olympic handball player here. Scooped it

away. Relief? We should have won it in 90

minutes. A sloppy goal to give away when we were in control. It was an

entertaining game, a lot happening in the game and I think we showed a

lot of character to come through. Some quality performances,

particularly the captain. You ran the gamut of emotions? Yes, we made

11 changes but we worked hard the two days and the kids have got

something to prove. I thought they did me proud. Minute charge on for

the disallowed goal for the third goal. Taylor made a mess of the

header, it wasn't going anywhere and the referee fell for it. It was a

cracking cup tie. End to end stuff. I thought all of the officials were

good. You could not take your iPod it.

Just like we saw from Newcastle at the weekend, Alan Pardew is under

pressure and he has got some fight again from his players when he needs

it washed and Mark it was a wonderful game of football. Two

managers smiling at the end, tells everything. Both can be pleased with

the application and the way their teams set about the task. It was a

good game of football. It could have gone either way. Newcastle just

about edged it. It was decided by a good run and wonderful finish. Your

view on the two penalties which work in the same spot for both players.

They were strange. He was drawn into the challenge and does not take the

ball. A massive effect on Zaha, apart from he made the challenge and

did not have the ball. Good finish from Dwight Gayle. He looked good

tonight. This one, probably a bit more clear-cut. McCarthy does the

ball. After he makes the challenge, his put comes down onto the ball.

But the referee sees it as the challenge come before the touch. It

was a good penalty. As for the winner, Paul Dummett, local lad from

Newcastle. What is the defender doing. He sees the space, in he goes

and it is a brave header. Wonderful delivery. Down amongst the boots.

But he spots that like a real centre forward, timed his run, it was

perfect. The reaction in a lot of games tonight showed that this

competition means a little bit to some of these sides now. What affect

of that result will that have on Alan Pardew? It will not do him any

harm. There is a way to go. There are certain signs of them turning

the tide now. The performance, more than anything was what he would have

required. Well, there's no stopping Stuart

Pearce and Nottingham Forest. Unbeaten in League and Cup

his side lead the early stages of the Championship promotion race and

visit a Spurs side still smarting from a surprise home defeat at

the hands of West Brom on Sunday. Mauricio Pochettino makes 11 changes

including a debut for Michel Vorm plus home debuts for Benjamin

Stambouli and Federico Fazio. Stuart Pearce made nine changes with

19-year-old midfielder, Jorge Grant Paulino away from grand. Townsend.

Nicely blocks. And given away by Fox 's. Danny Fox switched off. Paulino

picked him off and then had his shirt tugged. Positive running.

Vaughan well beaten. Another shot on goal. First bit of real positivity

shown by Nottingham Forest and it is 20-year-old Ben Osborne bursting

from midfield. He had the goalkeeper beaten, only to be denied by the

frame. Townsend drifted in but Danny Fox read the pass. Look at Harding

go. He is on the right wing now. Grand, court by Davies. Clear. Now

we have got a cup tie on. Did Forest have anything here? The ball lands

on Townsend's right arm. Did he control the ball with it? I think

there was a shout. Really lively Capital One Cup side. Townsend!

Townsend given the time to get himself ready and fire.

Good shot! What a sizzler. Only one thing in his mind. Saw that it

opened up. Spurs starting to creep ever closer

to the Nottingham Forest box. In towards Paulino. Nice attempt.

Little flick with the outside of the boot. Only just wide of the left

hand post. What a chance, part the goal! Grand

Hall scored. His first Nottingham Forest star Danny left alone in the

Spurs penalty area to give the championship leaders the lead. That

looked a lost cause. The deflection was kind, he could have settled for

the corner but the attack going. What a reward.

Jan Vertonghen on a charge. Good cross. Paulino couldn't convert it.

One of the best balls into the box from a Spurs point of view that we

have seen all night. The Spurs hierarchy sitting in the box

thinking about what might be. Good try! What a goal. Ryan Mason has

levelled things up with an absolute blockbuster. Spurs have equalised

1-1. How about this to announce yourself. 23 years old out on loan

season after season and in a Spurs shirt for only his fifth senior

appearance. What a way to score your first senior goal. Bhutto was raised

high. -- boot. Townsend! The goalkeeper was

helpless. That was much more straight forward for the Forest

keeper. A terrific efforts. Look at Harding, head was down. He did not

want to get anything in the way of that. Roberto Soldado. The flag

stays down and Roberto Soldado has given Spurs believed. The deflection

enough to take the ball away from the goalkeeper. He is onside. He

poked out a toe and made it 2-1. Expertly controlled. That will wrap

it up the Tottenham Hotspur. Had to work for this. They have ended a run

of four games without a win by coming from behind to beat

Nottingham Forest. Cleverly disguised ball. Erik Lamela set it

up. Erik Lamela! Off the outside of the post. He is going to be big, big

layer for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Difficult game because Nottingham Forest are a good team. They scored,

but the reaction was a great reaction.

Congratulations to the players. 3-1 was a great result. I am not afraid

to put Young players in the team if they have shown me in training they

are ready. The likes of Osborne, Paterson and grand took the

opportunity well. So Tottenham Hotspur through, but

Nottingham Forest made life difficult for them? There was no

real tempo in the game and Nottingham Forest are comfortable.

They took the lead and you think it was going to be a difficult night.

Osborne, looks a real talent. He has come from the Forest Academy. It was

two home-grown substitutes come from the Forest Academy. It was

came on. They started to pass the ball forward and look forward. More

positive in their play. He played between the lines. Movement was

better. He was the link between different players and was always

available to give that extra pass. Roberto Soldado benefited as well.

the impetus and it filtered through the side. They were at the Forest

and did not let them settle. Harry Kane with the second goal. Have they

given the manager something to think about ahead of what is a massive

game at the weekend? They have certainly stated their case and that

is what these games of four. Incredibly as well, it was Mason's

first goal six years after making his debut but Tottenham. He has had

to be very patient? He has been here there and everywhere, six or seven

different loans. All of a sudden now, you are thinking is he ready to

make an impression? Talking about the youngsters of Osborne and George

grand who did score the goal. There were four more ties

Championship, Sheffield Wednesday. Manuel Pellegrini makes five changes

woodwork. It is the closest we have come to a goal and what a terrific

How about that for a finish? Feeling the goalkeeper may have got

all foul so obligingly but the 19-year-old Frenchman.

Certainly their first chance. It brings their equalising goal.

Remarkably given Chelsea 's dominance it is 1-1. Kay Hill is

Hull 's defence failed at a crucial moment and Gareth McAuley 's first

also on his debut, he was teasing the Holly defence. -- Hull defence.

They were celebrating a hard earned pace in the last 16. -- place. Wigan

and QPR were sent packing at the Pirelli Stadium. No such trouble for

Brighton. Gary Gardner 's header setting up Rohan Ince. A couple of

scares for the championship club. The bizarre manner in which Burton

conceded possession for their opponents second goal summed up the

League 2 side's night. You wonder he was merciless. Typically a ferocious

strike from the midfielder but Paddy McCourt was the most creative player

in the Brighton ranks. In the second half helping Craig Miquel Smith with

the debate about which of these would be in the draw for round four.

Working between far harder after the break, the only blight on the

visitors evening came too late to make any difference. This hybrid

catching Robby Ware. Leaving the winners finishing with ten men as

they reached the last 16 for the first time in 35 years. -- hybrid.

1979 was the last time they were in the going for the last round of the

League Cup. Some incredible games. The club in a similar situation to

Newcastle with West Brom not starting particularly well but

giving themselves some hope. Especially over the last couple of

performances. It's been a couple of good games. Especially the last two

Chip side like Sheffield Wednesday is ominous. -- informed. Up until

the first goal for Man City they probably had the best chance,

Sheffield Wednesday, and played fine. They more than held their own.

You couldn't see this one coming. It was an amazing game. One of those

where you walked out the room, came back in and they were 3-0 up. You

look at the squad, the strength of the site keep it out. We shouldn't

be surprised because he's done this before. It is a real statement. This

time and late last season he had Frank Lampard. You would always be a

good signing. He played a bit further forward today. -- he would.

This is what Frank does brilliantly. Arriving into the box. Strong enough

to stand his ground. James Milner. Yet again.

Worked wonderfully well and the movement when they started to open.

Sheffield Wednesday up. It was incredible.

They have days like this West Ham, you think will go to war three up on

take offered off the Gas but they don't. They are very professional.

what English supporters want to see. They want to see them taking the cup

competition seriously. Right, the rest of the action from

including a senior debut for 17-year-old

Liverpool than to any other club. A record eight League Cup wins. 11

we will always remember that moment. Rogers yet to make an impact on the

League Cup with Liverpool. Into the fourth round in his first season in

charge. Levelling for Middlesbrough. Defensive frailty. That has been

exposed in the Premier League so far this season raises its ugly head for

Liverpool again. The quality of the ball in that makes it so difficult

to defend against. A finishing touch from Adam Reach. Friend. Tomlin.

Clayton. Middlesbrough worked that really well. They were the width of

a post way. Taking a late lead at Anfield. Marco Lucas. Sterling. Was

it hands? It looked like a hand. Mike James didn't have a clear view

Enrique. Again, Balotelli going for it. Drilled in by Suso. His third

Liverpool goal. Arrived with 108 minutes on the clock. Plenty of

resistance from Liverpool. It's been a frustrating night for them. The

Lana, Henry Kaye, Balotelli had a swing. -- Adam Lallana, Enrique.

Locating a clear route to goal. Suso. Careless. Trying to get the

back foot through. A challenge from Yaya Toure. It is a penalty. A very

dramatic late twist. A Yala feeding Bamford. It is Bamford. It is 2-2

and this is heading for a spot kicks. Calm as you like. From the

young player on loan from Chelsea. Liverpool have won the toss to go

first from the spot. Debutant goalkeeper Jamal Blackman faced by

the formidable figure of Mario Balotelli. Five minutes ago this

young man scored a penalty. Patrick Bamford cannot repeat the trick. The

goalkeeper guessed right but it was pretty perfectly placed. Clayton.

Middlesbrough are off the mark. Adam Lallana still to score. Scores from

the spot. Adam Reach. Perhaps the best penalty so far. Suso having

scored his first Liverpool goal tonight. One in the shoot out. All

this means that if he doesn't score Liverpool have won. Very well placed

into the top corner. He had to save this one or it is all over. The

19-year-old with the world at his feet. Raheem Sterling to win it.

Blackman makes his first penalty save a blemish on sterling 's

record. On we go with the shoot out. Still reliant on this penalty being

converted. 4-4. Here is a test of the young man's sinew and nerve. On

his debut 18-year-old Jordan Williams. Nerveless. The pressure,

the scrutiny ratchets up. Sudden deaths now. He has to score. George

Now with those who tried to hide out of sight but the manager looks for a

taker. As resounding as any of the penalties we have seen. Gone through

the strikers. Most of the midfielders. Mamadou Sakho. Not

full. On loan from Chelsea. Is he tired or just nervous? Jose

Enrique A. Nine out of ten for Liverpool. If this goes in we will

see the keepers taking penalties against each other. We have the

relatively rare situation now where those who are paid to keep the ball

out of the net try to put the ball in it. Starting with Mignolet.

Jamal Blackman. We're going to go round again.

Mario Balotelli. For the second time. More of a kink in the run, a

bit more hesitation, the same outcome. Quarter of an hour ago

Patrick Bamford hadn't even thought I'm sure about taking a penalty. He

is now lining up to attempt his third. One success, one failure.

Bamford through the keeper and in. Bleary eyed, Brendan Rodgers. It may

well be something new even for someone as experienced as this man.

Lucas. Some poor individual is going to fail. Adam Clayton. Just inside

the post but just is good enough. Adam Lallana. 13-12.

Adam Reach. Suso again. Smiles all round. Where will this masterclass

in penalty taking end? Albot he has missed. Liverpool go through at the

end of a marathon penalty shoot out. It is: Middlesbrough who contributed

plenty to this then the cup tie. -- and lengthy. It is little for that

go through. 14-13 on penalty kicks. I wasn't sure if we were going to

get him tonight. 30 penalties. We haven't seen too many like that.

Congratulations to my players. They showed great quality and composure

in the penalties. And to the Middlesbrough players. They played

well and get going until the end. And took us to the penalties. I told

them after the game I didn't have the words to tell them how proud I

am. We were fighting against one team like Liverpool in Anfield.

Half a dozen in the Saints wall. Sanchez. Fantastic. Picked it up and

put it there. Goals in Europe, goals in the Premier League and now a goal

in English knockout competitions. Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal. Target,

Davis. Nicely worked for, who has changed flying. He's gone over. A

contact and where? Certainly in the box and certainly shouldn't shin.

Keith Stroud was beautifully positioned. 1-1. Smoothly down the

about. Drifted in by Tadic. Away as far as Nathanial Klein. What a goal.

That is brilliant. A scream of screamers from Nathanial Clyne. The

header out from chambers. Good enough up to a point. Clyne But saw

a spot and he hammered it. Tadic The a fine save. He had a

glimpse of that through any little chink in the wall. We made the most,

we were one nil up and after that I feel we gave two soft goals away. At

first because there was no need to make any foul in the second. We

didn't reduce the distance with the shot and we had the opportunity to

do it. You cannot stand at the edge of the box and look at people who

are shooting at goal. They had a great ambition and it showed. They

showed that ambition tonight. Thanks to the fans it is amazing, more than

5000 fans of Southampton. They are happy, they enjoyed it. Everything

we do was for them. Great night for the Saints, their standing started

the season continues. We left scratching our heads. Arsene Wenger

talks about letting in soft goals what was soft about Clyne's

screamer? Look at the keeper, he goes one way and the ball swerves

the other way. And then he can't get it back. A magnificent strike. You

can see it better from here. The keeper moves one way, thinks it's

going that way, but can't get back because of the pace on the ball.

Another one, you cannot get better. Afterwards he said they are pushing

towards may playing for England. There are certain players not making

the right back position. Maybe it is up for grabs. Probably rightly so.

It is a position that is, not for grabs, but he could be competitive

in it. He's done so well. You go into a game like that, he makes five

changes, it was almost seamless. That's the sign of a good manager.

Some managers change their team around and it doesn't work because

they get it wrong. He changes his side around and it is another really

good performance. For we get Liverpool a quick one on Arsenal. It

looks like Arsene Wenger is running out of options. Because of injuries.

Their problem with the strength of the side. Probably as strong as he

could go. He has one or two injuries. Questions over the fitness

of others. We've seen him pick new sides, and players a lot younger

than, squads a lot younger than he picked for this game. No complaint

in that respect. What about that incredible game at Anfield. Only 30

penalties to separate them to Liverpool and Middlesbrough. He said

he and lost count. He thought that Liverpool would have to take another

penalty for the contest to keep on going. It just goes to show the

whole thing took 89 minutes. Concentration is key. I thought I

would get him quicker and penalties. Before the penalties were finished.

When you take the one penalty you think that's it. You probably loosen

concentration and slew count of what is going on. You think my job is

done. And then it falls wrong again. He would look a bit confused. Just

you lose. We have to give Middlesbrough their products. And

the manager yet again, another happy manager. -- their plaudits. The play

that way. From Tuesday 's match now. affair at the Liberty, as a

misfiring Everton met a Swansea side enjoying an encouraging start to

the season, despite tasting defeat Gary Monk made 5 changes with

Bafetimbi Gomis leading the line. Roberto Martinez made 7 changes

including a 1st Toffees first Everybody from Swansea back to

defend this. Blue carpet to deliver it. -- Luke Garbett. It came to

Alcaraz. It just sat up to him. Good work from Trammell. Montero. He had
