First Round The League Cup Show

Good evening. If it is drama you are after, look no further, this cup has

had it more in recent seasons, and the first round lived up to its

billing, as 22 Championship sides put their reputations on the line.

It is all about momentum, just ask Steve Claridge, who has been there

and done it. Here is what is on offer.

running with a draw at Blackburn on Friday, Cardiff faced a testing time

against Coventry tonight. We have the best of the action coming up. MK

Dons met Wimbledon for only the second time on Tuesday evening, we

have extended highlights of a fierce encounter. Carlisle produced one of

the shocks of the first round, having disposed of Blackburn last

season. We see how they got on against Derby County on Monday. And,

we have all the latest from another terrific first round, including a

few surprises along the way. Before we get to tonight's match,

last night's incredible game as Dagenham and Redbridge took on

Brentford. Everything going to plan, form and

status as Stuart Dallas at Brentford in control with two goals inside

nine minutes. You would be forgiven for thinking, nothing to see here,

printed appeared to be cruising. But Dagenham hit back with a quality

goal, Ashley Hemmings who cross, and George Porter with his first for the

club. Then, the downpour, and with it an own goal. Brentford kept 20

clean sheets in the league last season, their defence rarely as wide

open as this, with Ashley Chambers racing clear. Dagenham back within a

goal. Five goals in the first half. Andrew Bukhari scored the best of

the game to make it 3-3. Seven minutes from time, Brentford were

back in front, Andre Gray had his first goal for Brentford. It was not

to be the winner. 90 minutes on the clock, Ashley Hemmings looped in a

cross shot, forcing extra time for a club who had never when a tie in the

League Cup. Extra time can be cagey, negative, dull, but not in this

game. How is this for a Finnish? Montell Moore with his first senior

goal, 5-4, Brentford. Jamie Coulson has seen more than his share of

League Cup ties, this his 750th UK senior game. Level again. Dagenham

had not yet led. They did when Ashley Hemmings fired them 6-5

clear. Harlee Dean's goal produced a 6-6 scoreline. The last was between

Tranmere and Newcastle 23 days ago. Next, penalties. The Brentford

goalkeeper of the matchwinner, saving twice. He saved here from

Ashley Chambers. Kevin O'Connor scored the decisive kick, in his

501st appearance. He will never have played a game like this.

After ten minutes, I thought it could be an onslaught, but we showed

really good character, got back into the game, scored some decent goals.

Really pleased about the goal-scoring, you expect to win the

game after scoring six, but disappointed about conceding. The

neutral will have enjoyed it. Disappointed in terms of the game,

we were in good control in the first half, we made some basic errors and

poor decisions, and it became a context -- contest. We were in

control, and we must learn to be more clinical.

He is not wrong, for the neutral, and incredible game. We can analyse

the defending, but we do not have enough time, and it will take away

from a spectacle. It was brilliant. Sometimes, you get caught up in the

moment. Tactics and systems and whatever you set out to do go out

the window. A wonderful spectacle for everybody. If you were either

manager, do you bother analysing what went on? You can make half of

your team feel like $1 million and the other half of your team feel

like they had an awful time. The Brentford manager will think, we get

ourselves in a great position, see it through. If we are dominating,

keep it. The Dagenham manager will say, related, it took six goals to

get ahead, but it shows the character. Cardiff are adjusting to

life back in before ball league, but they faced a tricky cup tie against

Coventry. Coventry made four changes.

A senior debut for Jack Finch. Eight changes for Cardiff, including a

debut for Simon Moore, the goalkeeper.

Coventry do not have a good recent record at this early stage of the

League Cup, knocked out in the first round in four of the last five

seasons. Cardiff lead. Less than four minutes played. The

Championship side are in front. The long ball forward. Nicky Maynard

getting in behind the defence. And then, confusion between the

defenders, they both went for the ball. It allowed Edo Bergstrom a

free shot on goal. There is the challenge between the defenders.

Cardiff are in front. Coventry have given the ball away

far too often in the early exchanges.

Pushed away by Lee Burge. A good attacking move by Cardiff. Lee Burge

able to push it behind. A bitter dispute between the club's owners

and the supporters. Cardiff City can empathise with that, having their

own owner that did's that they do not particularly admire.

Punched away by Lee Burge. Jazzi Barnum-Bobb had made a good run, but

Bo-Kyung Kim ignored it and went for goal himself. The attendance is

poor, as we saw in the first half, not many in, 1382.

Josh McQuoid with the header. Nothing to trouble Simon Moore in

the Cardiff goal. There is the Coventry captain, who scored a

couple at the weekend, but he picked up a knock, not able to play to

night. It is a very young Coventry side. Looking to fight their way

back into this match. Straight at Simon Moore. Possibly Coventry's

best chance I far. Jim O'Brien got eight goals at Barnsley.

Lee Burge with the save. Still, Cardiff cannot find the second goal.

He cannot get the shot on target. Danny Swanson advancing forward at

pace. It is in by Kadeem Harris. Cardiff

City get a second goal. Surely, it is a goal that takes them through to

the second round. Kadeem Harris and Ryan Haynes going for the cross. I

am wondering whether the final touch came off the Coventry defender. It

may just have been a touch from Ryan Haynes there. Yes, it is an own

goal, Ryan Haynes has put into his own net.

Coventry have a goal back, Shaun Miller. We could be in for a

rip-roaring finish now. Ryan Haynes had scored the own goal a few

minutes earlier, with a peach of a cross. Shaun Miller holds Coventry)

into the match. It is a corner kick, it came off

Matthew Connolly. The last chance, maybe, the

Coventry. It was only just wide from Andy Webster. Andy Webster with a

glancing header. Declan John was on the post.

It got a bit nervous for Cardiff, but considering the changes made,

they are through to the second round, how will be manager reflect

on it? For the first hour, they were really fluent. When you make that

many changes, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It worked in

their case. There are few sides who can dominate for 90 minutes, so you

have to make the most of your period in the ascendancy. All of a sudden,

there was an excellent opportunity for Coventry to get back. This is

what the manager needed, and early start. Nicky Maynard, looks to play

off the last man, he holds it up, a little flick. They could have done

more defensively, but it is a good finish. This made it 2-0.

Unfortunate from a Coventry perspective, that it is a bold

worked goal. If Ryan Haynes does not score that, Kadeem Harris does. You

are causing people problems when you get in behind. It is a bond of full

ball in. When you are facing your own goal, you have to try to make

the challenge. The Coventry manager gave had three debuts, some young

faces, but they grew with confidence. They had a chance at a

pivotal moment. Yes, at 1-0 down, they were just coming back, this was

a super chance for Shaun Miller. He tries to clip it rather than lifting

get over the goalkeeper, and he gets right under it. That was at 1-0,

they were coming back into the game. At 1-1, it could have been

different. The Coventry manager is the favourite to take over at

Huddersfield, but thankfully for Coventry fans, he says he is happy

at the club, and he has got a long-term project, and he is willing

to see it through. Encouraging news for Coventry fans. One of the

standout ties of the first round was not for the faint-hearted, with MK

Dons at home to Wimbledon. They won their only previous meeting two

years ago. MK Dons made two changes, Daniel Powell and Benik Afobe coming

in. One change for Wimbledon, Mark Phillips coming in. None of the

Wimbledon squad featured in the only previous encounter between the sides

two years ago. A 2-2 draw for Wimbledon in their

league opener at the weekend, coming from behind to lead 2-1 before

conceding a late equaliser, at home to Shrewsbury. A good save, but the

rebound for Sean Rigg... He will be kicking himself, the first chance

was the most inviting. A great save by David Martin.

Wimbledon have put everybody apart from Matt Tubbs back to defend this.

It is in. It is a crafty backheel from Kyle McFadzean. James Shea

beaten at his near post. He would not have expected this kind of

finish, especially from a centre half, it is brilliant from Kyle

McFadzean. As cheeky as they come. Two goals in two games for the big

number five of MK Dons. Not quite sufficient, although I

think David Martin helped it on its way. Adebayo Akinfenwa continues to

be a handful. doubled their lead, four minutes

into the second half. Already, this game may be beyond Wimbledon. A good

early ball from Ben Reeves, and with Barry Fuller backpedalling, he sized

up the opportunity, James Shea moved to his left, as Daniel Powell fired

it to his right. A very important save. James Shea

just about keeps Wimbledon in this one. It is a fabulous run from

Daniel Powell, and when it came to Ben Reeves, the angle was tight. But

for James Shea, it would have been game over. That is it. Benik Afobe

puts this game beyond any doubt. It is not an incident that Alan Bennett

will look back on with any great fondness. An assured finish from the

man on loan for the season from Arsenal. 7174, tonight's attendance.

It is off the line. Alan Bennett, who made the mistake for MK Dons'

third goal, was on hand to clear it off the line.

The chance has gone. Blogs by Kyle McFadzean. It would not have changed

the outcome of the game, but it would have reduced the arrears and

at least provided some kind of consolation.

Somehow, it stayed out. If anybody deserves a goal in blue, it is

Adebayo Akinfenwa. Wimbledon have had more than a few

opportunities tonight. Adebayo Akinfenwa's header struck his own

player. A penalty. He was tripped by Dean

Lewington. Wimbledon have a perfect chance to get the consolation goal

after all. No doubt about that. Matt Tubbs won it, and he will take it.

It might be the last kick of the game, deep into the third minute of

added time. The noise from behind the goal... There is a bit of a

pitch invasion. We see the penalty find the far corner. We have got

about 50 Wimbledon fans, who have spilled onto the pitch. The final

whistle has gone. What really matters is that MK Dons have beaten

Wimbledon here tonight. The players stuck to the fight. It

is difficult, it is like a derby, and there will always be emotion and

passion. The two sets of players conducted themselves really well,

and that is the bit we have got to take from the game. We shot

ourselves in the foot, conceding a set piece. To go and concede from a

set piece is criminal. I asked for a bit more intensity in the second

half, pressing a bit higher, having a go, and the boys gave me that. A

couple of slip-ups have killed the game off, but the best team won.

MK Dons did dominate, you knew what he was getting at, because the first

goal summed it up. Wimbledon were not quite at it when it mattered.

You would expect somebody to be in the hole. Kyle McFadzean gets there.

When you allow the opponent to get the first touch from a corner, you

will have problems. It is a lovely finish, but they follow the ball,

rather than going towards the ball. They get punished for it. He would

have wanted somebody on the six yard line, just in that space, to stop

the ball coming through. Considering the history of these clubs, are you

still surprised at the amount of feeling and emotion that still goes

on, especially in the build-up to this fixture? There is still the

novelty value of them playing each other, but it goes a lot deeper. The

feeling is much deeper for Wimbledon fans. Retaining the name in the new

identity, it is still something that great. If they do play each other in

cup competitions, might it simmer down a bit? You would like to think

so. We almost mentioned it on Saturday, Wimbledon's front players,

Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs, when they gel, they can be a real

threat. That is the case for both sides. MK Dons did not have an end

product, they looked like they have got three or four players who could

contribute, and that partnership, the big man and a little man, when

you play together, you have to be given, and they are. Somebody who

will take the physical side, and somebody who can finish. Some of the

other stories from the first round, starting with the other match from

tonight, Sheffield United against Mansfield Town.

Beaten on the opening weekend, Sheffield United were eager to get

up and running. The Mansfield goalkeeper tested early on, with the

FA Cup semifinalists setting the pace. Their opponents were disrupted

with the loss of a debutante, but in a rare Mansfield attack, his

replacement went close. They were much better after the break, only to

fall behind following their best spell. Andy Butler's debut goal.

Mansfield mustered a stirring response. Alex Fisher has plied his

trade in Belgium, Spain and Italy, but he loved his first goal back in

England. For a while, it was hard to call a winner, but four minutes from

time, Marc McNulty decided it on his debut. Sheffield United safely into

the hat this time. For the second year in a row,

backbone have suffered a first-round upset. Neal Bishop's 34th minute

goal. The Blackburn manager called it the worst performance of his

tenure. Their attempts at a recovery did not amount to much. The

goalkeeper was also well positioned to stop this effort. Scunthorpe held

on for a victory that should in still plenty of confidence.

disappointment at Swindon, and you have seen the response, I am

delighted for the travelling fans. I thought we deserved the victory, we

played some good football, we moved it well, we created opportunities,

and we were brilliant without the ball as well.

Ipswich have often found themselves on the wrong end of a leak cup

shock. But they should have had their nerves settled. Mick McCarthy

utilised his squad, and there was nearly a headline grabbing winner

from the debut tongue. But calling home gone, and late in extra time, a

goal which they had not worked on in training from Izale McLeod ensured

they became the ninth lower league club in 12 years to knock Ipswich

out. I thought we had done enough to win it in the 90 minutes. But well

done to Crawley. I congratulate my players. They never gave up. They

showed passion and effort and enthusiasm. If we could pass the

ball better, I would be happier tonight.

2006 finalists Wigan made alterations in their first meeting

with Burton. They took time to justify the sweeping changes. A

first goal in six months the Marc-Antoine Fortune. Six minutes

after coming on, Dominic Knowles scored in injury time. The Burton

manager described the team performance as good as any in his

two years at the club and was impressed by the players' start to

the second half which resulted in a golfer Stuart Beavon. Despite having

time to get back in the game, Wigan and fortune could not roster and

equaliser. -- muster. The lower league teams will raise

their standards. You are not going for 90 minutes flat out, then you

can hurt. We got hurt today. We caused ourselves problems. That is

as well the team has played in my time as manager. We were resolute

and created chances. Wolverhampton Wanderers have three

goals ruled offside. There was a shock in store for the crowd five

minutes after this goal. But they bared their teeth in a quickfire

fightback that garnered two goals in as many minutes. Nouha Dicko put

them back in with a shout. Sam Ricketts levelled the scores. The

star of the night was Lawson D'Ath, who found the perfect way to recover

from being released by Reading in the summer. He repaid his new

manager's faith. Wolverhampton had a chance to drag themselves back on

terms in the second half. But the Cup shock was complete.

We gave poor goals away and in the end Wolverhampton defended well. We

had balls across the box. We did not get on the end of that. Blackpool

had a bench of six that this as opposed to the four they managed on

Saturday. That is where the good news ended. A let off as this

mistake almost let in Scott Vernon. The Blackpool boss admitted the

league side with a better team. -- were the better team. Ashley

Vincent's cross was flicked on by James Collins. The goal-scorer was a

former Blackpool player. Blackpool responded well. This shot back off

the post. This player could not score with not one but two rebounds.

This cross just eluding, and Shrewsbury Town impressive

We were composed and passed it well. They are pleasing signs. We will not

get carried away, there is work to do, but the club is fighting back

and results like tonight will help the recovery.

Some have this earmark as a shock but any hope at -- Accrington had

were dashed. This striker endured a difficult debut at Millwall at the

weekend that this was the match-winning performance here,

which was just as well, because they gave Leeds the jitters later on.

James Gray pulled one back with six minutes remaining. Moments later,

they were millimetres away from an equaliser. Perhaps anxiety set in.

How else can you explain this? The challenge defied description, let

alone anything else. The unpredictable is never far away at

Elland Road. Opinion was divided about the

match's pivotal moment at the Valley. The manager believed his

skipper blocked this effort with his rib cage but the referee believed an

arm was used and dished out the double punishment of penalty and red

card. The Belgian took the responsibility and scored his first

goal for Charlton. Lawrie Wilson is not a regular scorer, but provided a

tidy finish here. He was at it again. The build-up was given to

finish it deserved by Wilson. He equalled his tally for the whole of

last season in four minutes. Chris Lewington was having a debut to

forget in goal and his failure to gather this effort allowed Simon

Church to send Charlton through emphatically.

The penalty change the tempo. Up till then we were doing well.

Charlton were in for a game and certainly early on we pass the ball

well. Unfortunately, the defendant doing a fantastic blocking job has

been punished. Having sold last season's top scorer, Reading more

reliant on Pavel Pogrebnyak in front of goal. Nick Blackman made it two -

zero. Newport refused to resign themselves to defeat. Shaun

Jeffers' first goal for the club brought hope in injury time. But

Reading born teenager Craig Tanner made the most of his senior debut to

ensure his hometown club's progression. Despite hammering

Huddersfield, Bournemouth manager changed his starting line-up of

Exeter, who fell behind when Scot Bennett put through his net. Their

safe passage was sealed when Dan Gosling let in the second.

Nine changes did not derail Watford's campaign at Stevenage. One

goal was sufficient. This maiden goal for the players settled the

meeting. We knew it would be a tough game, we

have had cup matches here before. It was nice to come out on the right

side and into the next round. 100% start to the season for

Watford. One of the biggest upsets in the first round, was the turning

over of Wigan. Two good results for your old Cambridge team-mate. Not

just a good result but the way they played. Almost by necessity. He had

to freshen up. You need to. They hit the ground running, which is

important. Stuart Beavon looks a good signing. The Wigan side, ten

changes. They have done well in the Cup recently. Should we be

surprised? Probably not. Shrewsbury Town at the great results, 1-0

against Blackpool. We asked if it was an upset. I posted that on

Twitter and some people say no. Shrewsbury Town 60 new faces and a

new manager. Quite exciting, but not the Blackpool. They showed Blackpool

how quickly things can turn around -- 16 new faces. The manager

changing and things have settled down. People seem to know where they

want to be and where they want to go. Black all just seen 1 million

miles away from getting to the end of the road of what we expect of a

championship side and somebody who can be competitive at that level.

Even against Shrewsbury Town that they failed to fill their bench,

they had one space. How much sympathy do you have? He is playing

catch up massively. I do not know how much he is to blame, the

chairman, the problems at the club are to blame. Everybody is

responsible and has two play their part. They have a mountain to climb.

They left everything late last year. They started the season well.

It has not happened this year. Having missed out on a return to the

Premier League in the play-offs, Derby County began the season as

favourites for promotion this season. They were won against

Rotherham and then were away to Carlisle.

Another great save. It is just wide by Ward. Timed his run to

perfection. It was a very smart stop from Mark Gillespie. Gillespie,

again. Mystified as to how he did not make it a goal to Derby. Craig

Forsyth looking for Martin. He was in against the bar. That Carlisle

goal is leading a charmed life at the moment. David Symington is the

player over this the Carlisle. And a big moment in the game. David

Symington! Martin's clearance. Carlisle desperately close to

finding the goal that might bring as a shock result tonight. -- bring us.

And that is in. Jeff Hendrick breaks the deadlock. Taken by Jamie Ward

and helped on by Whitbread. Jeff Hendrick found space and the back of

the net. Finally, Mark Gillespie's brave resistance has been broken

down. And that is number two. It is all over. Chris Martin, last

season's top scorer for Derby settles the issue. That was a good

delivery from the right, this time from Russell. And a brilliant finish

from the Scottish international, Chris Martin. Ever so pleased with

the performance. Disappointed with the result. It gives us food for

thought to move forward and be hopefully successful this season.

Short on numbers and having lost at Watford on the opening day of the

season, alarm bells ringing for Bolton Bury against -- Bolton

against Bury. With seconds to go, Craig Davies was

brought down and Wanderers had a lifeline. The keeper could do

nothing from preventing Craig Davies from taking it into extra time.

Bolton then took the game away. Three minutes into the extra

half-hour, this header caught out Chris Sedgwick on the goal line. It

might go down as a own goal. The perfect free kick send them into

round two. Bury Made a game of it through their captain, Jim McNulty.

But it was not enough. but in extra time, defending

properly at times, just not in the second half. If Huddersfield wanted

a lift after Mark Robins became the first managerial casualty of the

season, they could not have made a worse start at Chesterfield. This

put the League 1 hosts in front. The advantage was doubled when this

wayward pass was punished in spectacular fashion just before the

break. Banks had just replaced Humphreys and made an impact. It

prompted the caretaker boss to change the formation at half-time.

And then they had hoped. This distribution perfect this time.

Chesterfield were not finished. Their lead was restored thanks to

Roberts' determined drive into the box. Eoin Doyle with quick

reactions. The Derbyshire club looks set for success but as they closed

in on their place in round two, nerves showed. And with this tumble

in the area, Huddersfield have another lifeline. Wells kept

composure and let the charge row quick kick-off. They had six minutes

to save themselves. It moved into stoppage time. Chesterfield let them

win slipped through their fingers. Paul Cook was keen to point out that

Tommy Lee is normally a pair of safe hands. Huddersfield got their act

together. They made sure of progression when the substitute Joe

Lolley added a fifth to progression when the substitute Joe

Lolley added a leave Chesterfield fans wondering how the evening had

gone so badly wrong. Birmingham City had not seen their

side win at St Andrews over seven months. But once Donaldson scored

his first goal for his new club, you sensed they would ease clear of the

Cambridge side who had not played in the League Cup for a decade.

Birmingham fans take nothing for granted. Ryan Donaldson levelled the

tie. Birmingham were against the ropes. They were indebted to their

keeper, who is spared their blushes after this happened just before the

hour. In extra time, Paul Caddis put Birmingham in front for a second

time. The home win that eluded them for so long was within touching

distance and was confirmed by their new signing, Mark Duffy. Birmingham

win, but this was far from impressive. I told the players I

watched Cambridge at the weekend and said they were outstanding and this

would be a tough game and I was correct. Nobody expected us to come

to win here tonight. I know there can be shocks. We wanted to win. We

were confident we could give them a scare. We have done that.

Unfortunately, we could not see it through. Two games and two wins and

scored five and conceded none. Middlesbrough have started the

season with promise. It looks like they have strength in depth. This

opened the pressed claims for a regular first-team spot by Luke

Williams. They extended their lead in the second half through Grant

Leadbetter -- Grant Leadbitter. And Kite look tasty, too. Can he do it

on a wet Tuesday night at old and -- Oldham? It was a stroll for

Middlesbrough. Opportunities to break the deadlock

were few and far between, with one of the best falling to Rotherham's

Paul Green. This just off, which will strike a chord with the

chairman who pitched up at the wrong ground before the match. After a 90

minute stalemate, the League 1 club were undone when this player lost

his bearings. Without a hint of nerves, Derbyshire completed the

punishment to carry the championship club through, much to Fleetwood's

frustration. Did you get a good view of the penalty? It was not a

penalty. I would be interested to see if it happened at the other end.

I do not think it is a penalty, and the players do not. We are an honest

bunch. We had penalties on Saturday and held our hands up. That was not.

Stuart Pearce has fond memories of the League Cup, lifting the trophy

twice as a player. The winger's second goal in consecutive games for

his new club. He could have made life more comfortable for the

travelling fans had he not been a fraction too high the next time he

ghosted into the penalty area. Forrest reduced to ten men in the

second half. And a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge.

Tranmere, beaten League Cup finalists in 2000, had a chance to

get back into the game. They went mighty close to an equaliser when

this cross was thumped against the upright. But Forest go through. Two

wins out of two the Stuart Pearce. Wickham arrived at the Den

determined to faze Millwall with their away kit. Matthew Briggs

scored on his Millwall debut before deciding his own shirt was not to

his liking. A yellow card followed and ear-bashing from the manager.

The Wycombe boss was once a Ian Holloway player and ran his old

governor close. The League 2 side fought them all the way. David Ford

hat to be alert. In the second half, the shirtless celebration came out

to haul the player who collected a second yellow stop in fairness, the

challenge might have earned a straight red card. Either way, it

would have provoked a roll of the eyes from Ian Holloway, who

otherwise enjoyed the contest. I want to give credit to Wickham, who

played well. We knew we were in a game. I thought we edged it. It was

thoroughly enjoyable. Very pleased. That is ten we have not lost. It

feels nice. We have earned respect from a championship side who beat

Leeds at the weekend convincingly. It shows how far we have come. Last

season was a poor season for Wycombe Wanderers. They are good steps, slow

steps but good steps for me. Brighton found Cheltenham tough to

crack until they drop their guard. Lewis Dunk with his first senior

goal. Equally delighted was the man who made the victory say. Craig

Mackail-Smith, his first goal in a year and a half. Most of which was

spent with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Notts County were less than two minutes away from wrapping a

terrific win at Preston on Saturday, but this was a different story. This

thunderous finish the Sheffield Wednesday with just over 90 seconds

played at Hillsborough. Jacques Maghoma. They secured an excellent

win at Brighton on Saturday and now the league was doubled. We will know

more about Sheffield Wednesday when they play Derby on Saturday, but

this victory was effortless. Atdhe Nuhiu wrapped it up midway through

the second half. The former U21 striker put himself among the

a decent season. They have good manager and stability. For us, the

way we conceded the goals, especially early in the game, it is

hard to come back against a quality team. It has been an eventful four

days of the season of the Huddersfield Town, which is an

understatement. Mark Roberts leaving after 18 hours. Unlike the 4-0

convince the assistant referee he used to shoulder to control the

Swindon had a penalty of their own. Bamboozled by the trickery. No

complaints about the goal this time. Number four arrived nine

minutes from time with a sense of style. Thanks to the way it was made

and the way it was finished by Smith. Luton ended the match a goal

down and a man down. The attempt to win another penalty was viewed as

simulation by the referee. His second yellow card help to ensure

their return to the League Cup would be brief.

This acted as a precursor to Saturday's fixture. Crewe Alexandra

boasting four wins over Barnsley threatened to continue the trend

with this goal. Barnsley had opportunities to level. The best

second home defeat of the season. The Yeovil manager criticised some

of his players the lacking desire and passion and neither quality was

in plentiful supply when Dickinson gave Gillingham the lead midway

through the first half. Yeovil Town who were beaten by Doncaster at the

weekend, stepped it up. Glenn Morris with this low save. But he was left

helpless 11 minutes into the second half. A superb equaliser. In the

space of three minutes, the game drifted away from the Glovers. The

Gillingham lead was restored. Ill discipline cost the home side.

Lunging in on Luke Norris and the referee's card ended any chance of a

comeback for Yeovil. You are always disappointed when you go out of any

cup. It is a source of revenue. It was not going to happen today. We

made poor mistakes that led to goals. It seems to be a trait at the

moment. And a sending off. I have not seen it yet. I do not know

whether it was harsh, some people thought it was. That makes it more

difficult when you are down to ten men. There was no hint of late-night

drama in Devon when Orient took early control. David Mooney picked

this player's pocket and then they took advantage. They had suffered a

home defeat to Chesterfield on Saturday but got that out of their

system when this brilliant ball was wandered in. -- funded in. The match

became a contest on the stroke of half-time. Nothing pretty about the

semifinals for Bradford, and this deflection was not as high profile,

Having lost three successive first-round ties at home, it was

high time Port Vale's look turned. Fortune was on their side for the

six minutes, and it was a hat-trick in ten minutes. One left foot, one

white, and this header, the perfect trouble, Port Vale's quickest since

1934. Their progress stalled when the deficit was adduced by Neal

Austen. But their response. Long in coming, Marshall be provided, and

Michael Brown, Hartlepool born, with his first goal for his nightclub.

The one glaring omission from the goal-scorers was Tom Pope, and he

put that right. He ensured a four goal margin, as

the home team grabbed a first victory of the season. Their biggest

When they last met in the League Cup, the roles of favourite and

underdog were reversed. In this instance, Portsmouth went into the

match looking to cause the shock, and took 12 minutes to show their

intent, Miles Storey's goal for them. Only three of Peterborough's

16 shots found the target. A stubborn Portsmouth defence ensured

the manager stretched his unbeaten record to nine matches.

We had to defend for some periods, but we always looked threatening on

the counterattack, a great finish from Miles Storey. We had a couple

of chances, we looked dangerous on the break. An entertaining game for

the fans. The departure of last season's

hotshot would have been a blow to Rochdale. They did not look like

breaking through the Preston rearguard. Goals either side of

half-time East Preston into the second round. Andrew Little got a

little fortunate inside the six yard box. And they effectively killed the

tie three minutes after the interval, Rochdale not clearing

their lines, and what looked a tricky assignment beforehand was

wrapped up comfortably by midfielder Neil Kilkenny.

Southend were hoping to avoid a fourth successive first-round exit,

but they failed to track the near post run of Malvind Benning. Walsall

withstood plenty of home pressure and could do nothing about this,

from Ryan Leonard. The tie was settled in the 87th minute, the

Walsall manager sees his team as they work in progress, and this

first goal from Kieron Morris suggests things are coming together

nicely. Morecambe began the season with an

away victory on Saturday. They needed to be in that form again

against the finalists from 2013. Bradford took the lead with a goal

but left Morecambe smarting, Aaron McLean the scorer from an excellent

pass. The appeals for handball ignored by the referee. The closest

Morecambe came to equalising was when this run and shot drew a save

from the goalkeeper. Bradford safely into the second round.

York City were on a mission to avoid a ninth consecutive first-round

exit. They had their fair share of chances. One of several dog players

to test the goalkeeper. But for all York City's possession and chances,

they were undone in the first minute of added time. Harry Forrester found

a way through, meaning South Yorkshire will be represented in

round two. Not a bad goal to decided. Well done

to Oxford, Crewe Alexandra, and Ben Williamson, for the perfect

hat-trick. We saw Leyton Orient go to extra time against Plymouth. The

manager said he wanted to do away with extra time in this competition.

speak personally. And the high risk of injuries. It is a good point, but

we have done away with the replays, how far do you cut back? The draw

for the second round was made earlier today. We have got three

pages of the graphic to get through. What has taken your eye? Stoke City

against Portsmouth, that would have been a Premier League match not want

the go. Millwall against Southampton, I have played in a cup

tie with those sides, it will be a tasty atmosphere. A West London

derby, five miles between Brentford and Fulham. That will be a good one,

it is nice to keep it local, a good away following. Michael Appleton is

back at his former club. Yes, back to West Brom, he will be looking
