Welcome to Manchester, well, welcome to Salford. This Saturday is Derby

day and we have been looking forward to this. Tonight 's programme is

dedicated to one of the most anticipated games in Premier League

history. Tonight we have Ibrahimovic, Shearer, Iniesta and

Johnson giving their thoughts on Manchester United versus enter the

city. United finally had a local rival to fear. The blues were the

upstarts, Carlos Tevez their poster boy. But the Reds had Wayne Rooney

and Sir Alex Ferguson. In between, City counted, thanks to Mancini and

Aguero. Their first league title was followed by a second under pedigree

knee. Now they were two joined in Manchester. -- under Pellegrini. The

Manchester derby is hard to beat. It's the captain 's goal! There is a

new name on the trophy. That name is meant to the city. -- Manchester

City. For the 20th time in the club's

history. Champions. The title was only way for a year.

That ruling has risen again. What a goal by Rashford!

That was then, now a new episode is about to be written. It's a story

that will be defined by the two huge personalities in charge, Jose

Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, two managers with very different styles

but opposites attract and these two can't stay away from each other.

It's a burning feud that ignited at Barcelona, simmered in Milan and

raged in Madrid. It may be about to boil over in Manchester.

Rivalry is central to the meaning of football, up with Pep Guardiola and

Jose Mourinho, to have a new breed of super manager, here in the same

city, it's been taken to a new and intriguing level. Jose Mourinho is

said to be... Pep Guardiola at Manchester City... I think it's one

of the most significant moment in history of the Premier League and

English football. Managers like to think of themselves as the

personification of the clubs they manage. It's perhaps this reason

that their rivalries can become so acutely personal. I wanted to do

something you hadn't done. I wanted to win the league but better.

There's no way you can win it better. I would love it if we win.

I'm embarrassed for him, honestly. I'm talking about facts. The history

of football is contracted by great reductions. These were not

fabricated animosities, they were primal. Now we have perhaps the most

explosive rivalry of all, two men who were once upon a time friends.

It all starts with Bobby Robson, the day that he turns up as a young

translator working for him at the airport, that is Jose Mourinho.

Quickly Robson recognise the head extraordinary colour ties well

beyond filling rustic skills. Young Pep was a voracious learner, he was

passionately in love with FC Barcelona. He could see under

Robson, pictures of the two of them dissecting a training session,

talking about an upcoming game, to students. At that stage, pretty

close. But what happened busy was that when Frank Rijkaard was

evidently going to be relieved at the final season, 2007-8, Treasury

Mendez, the agent for Jose Mourinho, hour after hour, phoned them to say,

when you change, it has to be Mourinho. Josie will change, he will

play 4-3- three, this lackadaisical culture will be dispersed when you

give him the job. They gave it to Guardiola. In my opinion, the

bitterness of having something exceptional taken away from him,

that he didn't get to take charge of that group, that cost Mourinho not

just a great deal, they it cost him too much.

I think in a way the rivalry between Guardiola and Mourinho comes as a

kind of perfect storm in Spain. Mourinho arrives as the hero for

Real Madrid, he looks at Barcelona in the semifinal and prevents them

from winning the Champions League at the Bernard Bale, the idea is, you

have stopped them, now come here and beat them here, for us. There is a

sense, but like with Clough and done really, that these two men to find

themselves against each other. It has to be said that there is a stark

contrast philosophically and personally between Mourinho and

Guardiola. It seems more than a coincidence that they have arrived

in the same city at the same time to renew their confrontation. The thing

was Mourinho easy he is a and great at that. In terms of the dark side,

we have no problem with that because we've always had that. Some of the

pundits and the media, they go on about, is he going to desecrate the

traditions of United. We have 34 years, he was up to all sorts! He

was devious and everything. He was the greatest manager of all time to

stop so we haven't got a problem with a bit of darkness. Mourinho is

the bad guy and Pep is the good guy. He has kept a good councils and the

has got it, he hasn't been bragging and shouting his mouth off, that is

Mourinho's style, we will leave that to them and get on with the job.

Mourinho was furious that Pep Guardiola were seen as the good

guide he was the bad guy, he was furious people to he was

misbehaving, he would make the point that others do it, but he is more

honest. That was serving his agenda. Guardiola reacted front against this

idea that he was perfect but reacted against those people who use his

supposed perfection against him and he says, maybe I do this perfume.

Two ways to describe Pep's football. First, its luxury cupboard lifts the

spirit, it has a geometric plan, it is a moving, living organism that

has core DNA that can't be abandoned. But you can reproduce it

in different footballing cultures and for my money, that makes it the

most exciting, the most brilliantly executed football there has ever

been. Quite the owner is a special coach. His eye for detail, it's

immense. -- Guardiola is a special coach. They are both similar in

terms of how they want to play and perform. I would say the one

difference is that Guardiola will not leave his style of play to get a

result or to change something, Mourinho would. He is slightly more

result minded in his way of playing, I think Guardiola is set in his way

of how the team has to play and that's how we play. I think Mourinho

is more of a pragmatist, he's a lot more flexible than people make out.

There is a lot of talk of him playing for 1-0, but he didn't do

that at Real Madrid, they broke for scoring records. He is able to

adapt. I am one of many that reflect on their time with Mourinho, they

speak very highly of him. He made such an impact at Chelsea when he

first arrived, he created such a winning spirit, winning atmosphere,

he should be regarded as one of the best, whether he is the all-time

best, it's difficult to say. But he's definitely a special one.

Extraordinary long-term success of United undersell Alex Ferguson was

at least in part about culture. He wanted United be more than just a

paycheque club, talked about the history, the tragedy at Munich, the

Busby Babes, rebuilding the club from the ashes of the runway. For

Ferguson, there was something that it meant to be a United player. Look

at teams like the all Blacks and you will see that culture truly matters

when it comes to domestic successful stop its not just about money or

tactics or even strategy, the buddy motivation that can only sustained

when it taps into something deeper. And this represents the defining

telling the court Mourinho. We have seen the wheels come off at previous

clubs, the astonishing collapse at Chelsea, the new mutiny at Real

Madrid. Nothing to say. Nothing to say? The clash with Costa? Nothing

to say. What other things that make you smile? Winning a match. They

call it third season syndrome post of motivation for Mourinho seems to

insist in the insinuation that everyone is against us. In the

short-term, this works. Nobody wants to be in a siege. But it's like a

sugar rush, just not sustainable. Nothing about the game at all, no

individual performance? No. This feels different to his other jobs

because it feels like on the face of it, it should be long-term, almost

like he has reached the top. It sounds ridiculous when he has been

at Real Madrid, but somehow he has been working towards this. Usually

comes in the club and he is all charm, making jokes, the special

one, all that, and then he gets serious and moody and noxious. But

there has been none of that. He has not been Charlie, he has been very

workmanlike. I think the United fans appreciate that, hopefully he won't

pop and fizzle out, he is therefore the long run. The hiring of

Guardiola could not have been more different. He was quoted

relentlessly until he finally succumbed to the allure of the

Etihad. But let's be brutally honest here. When Guardiola took the helm

at Barcelona, he inherited some of the finest players of all time. When

he joined Bayern Munich, they were already European champions.

Transforming Manchester City into a European powerhouse is a different

scale of challenge altogether. Even he knows he might fail. The primary

thing that makes him a top coach, irrespective of the fact people like

me often use words like genius to describe him, he goes into every new

week, each new club as well, the basic idea, the basic fear gnawing

away at him, maybe isn't really all that good.

To my mind, we do tend to exaggerate the significance of the manager. Is

he important? Absolutely. Should we interpret every kick, tackle and go

through the Prism of his influence? Absolutely not. In some ways, it is

slightly insulting to the players to think of them as merely a conduit

for the will of the man on the touchline.

When Guardiola arrived to Barcelona, it took a good few weeks into the

season for the ball to get rolling. As it did when Mourinho arrived at

Chelsea. Once we did that, we took off. And we had one of the most

successful seasons in football history. Five -- managers want to

win and we talk about Pep is a purist and poor dosh for and

idealist but he wants to win as well and Mourinho wants to win. We say

Mourinho wins and he is a winner, defying winner. This idea what is a

winner and one is a philosopher, it turns out philosophy wins quite a

lot as well. When the classical rivalry reached its most acidic, I

just would argue that Guardiola came out of it with more trophies, more

credit, less red cards, less polemic things said, and I think that means

that at that time, he won the battle and for Manchester, let's see.

So far, it it is seven wins the Pep and three the Jose but England is

the patch of Jose and he has already won the Premier league title three

times. Both clubs were well off the pace last season and the managers

have been put in for one reason, to improve results on the pitch. A

title challenge is the minimum expectation. Alan Shearer looks at

how they have begun to reshape their new teams.

Nine point out of nine, a perfect start the season both manager --

Zlatan Ibrahimovic offense, they are more dangerous in the box. They have

made 53 crosses compared to 29 from the last three games last season.

The first competitive game of the season, the community Shield against

Leicester and people were wondering how United would play. This is how,

they get balls out wide and they put them into dangerous areas because of

the physical presence of the line and Paul Pogba. The movement of

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not great but he gets the line of the ball early

before Morgan, he is early and has power and accuracy, the head is

superb. Against Southampton, very much like against Leicester. Once

the ball goes to the right-hand side as it is for Wayne Rooney here,

Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba knows that the ball comes into the

dangerous area. Rooney is not picking anybody out, he is putting

it into the dangerous area and Saint Zlatan Ibrahimovic, get your head on

this. He timed to perfection. Gets above his marker, Fonte well, he is

early so he cannot jump, and the direction of the header is superb

and that is a constant theme of United this season, getting the ball

into the box. Guardiola's Manchester City also use with the greater

effect and we saw something new to the Premier league this season, both

for black players were asked to push into the centre of midfield to

outnumber their opponents and both wingers stayed out on the touchline,

practically getting a choke on their boots. Against West Ham, Nolito and

de Bruyne, Sterling caused mayhem. De Bruyne on the right-hand side,

online practically, superb play from David Silva, they have options

either side, and when you play four at the back or five like West Ham,

it is designed so you outnumber your midfield and you stretch that

defence and Manchester City did a well in this game. So difficult, and

Sterling who I think has benefited more than most, if given the freedom

when the ball was on the left-hand side and he can get into the box and

stick it away. The first clip, Nolito and de Bruyne. They go down

the right-hand side with that with. Stretching West Ham. They were

unlucky with the first movement with Silva who hits the post. Look at

Sterling, coming in of the touchline, he is given the freedom

to roam and he gets his goal. Such a clever goal and a lovely ball from

Silva and I do not think Sterling would have taken this on last year.

He is prepared to do it now and it is such a clever goal. But both

teams playing different systems, this is a tactical head-to-head

between two of the best managers in the business that will be a

ferocious match. The winners could be from the team uses the wide

players to the effect. Manchester City or without talisman

Sergio Aguero who serves his first of the three match suspension after

being guilty of violent conduct for this elbow on Winston Reid. There

are many players capable of stealing the limelight and there are less

bigger personalities than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the man who does not do

auditions. Can you describe who is Zlatan

Ibrahimovic because a lot of people do not understand? I never heard

this question before, I think you are the only one who does not

understand, you should ask people who know that. What you think they

will say? An icon, a hate figure. Whatever

your opinion, his cult status continues to grow. But beneath his

almost mystical standing is an exceptional player. Yet the question

remains, who is Zlatan? Very arrogant, that is what I hear all

the time, he is very cocky, he has a bad character. You should never

judge a person if you don't know him because it is very dangerous. From

the start, Ibrahimovic was a divisive figure. He is a strong

character. When it is not going well or what he likes, then he can make

it difficult for the rest of the people. He can make it difficult for

himself. Ibrahimovic! Zlatan! A tough upbringing as the Sun of an

immigrant family in Malmo Sweden, Ibrahimovic developed a steely edge

to succeed and wherever he plays, the trophies followed. Although his

high standards were often hard to match. I believe in hard work. You

work hard, you get paid back. And I believe in the old school where you

train like you play, you do not train good, you do not play good.

There was an episode with a young player and he was not so good. But

he trained with us and I said to him at the end, go to your arrivals on

the calendar and train with me because this is the last time that

you train. And I told him, you don't have to speak like this. You are an

example for these guys. Sometimes, he can seem arrogant, but he is

really focused on his job, he really wants the best for his team. Stories

of his complex persona have made him an easy target for critics,

especially in England. But nine titles in the last ten seasons means

his self-assurance more than matches his self aggrandisement. He is one

of the best players I believe in the last 20 years. I put him there with

Messi, Ronaldo. His self belief is unbelievable and this is his

strength. I have won a lot of trophies and every country I came,

I40 macro. If I could win here, it would be fantastic. But what would

they talk about then? But time has changed. At Old

Trafford, Ibrahimovic is reunited with Jose Mourinho, a manager who

understands what makes him tick. He is a winner. I see myself as a

winner also, I like to win, they will do everything to win. And he is

direct with everyone, he is not a coach who goes behind you, he will

tell you if you are not good enough, you are not good enough. In contrast

is the man in the away dugout on Saturday. During a strange period at

Barcelona, Ibrahimovic and Pep Guardiola did not see eye. I had

this thing that he didn't want to talk to me and I was like, I am

doing good, I am training good, I am working hard. And at the end, no

words, no words, nothing. If somebody has a problem with me, they

should come to me and resolve it, whatever the problem is, like a man.

I think a lot of things has happened from that time until now. So how he

works today, I don't know. I could not care less because he is not my

coach. At 34, at United's future may not

lie with Ibrahimovic but there were memories of its past when he joined.

And if Jose Mourinho can again get the best out of him, there will be

no need to ask, who is Zlatan, any more!

means to the fun in the street. Justin Moorhouse claims he has a

special skill, to immediately tell a blue from the red by the way they

walk or even smell. He put his questionable theory to the test

around Manchester. A City divided. Two tribes go to

war! Billionaires in battle. But the music! It is not bad, at the end of

the day, it is a football match, Red versus Blue, United versus City,

this town and the fans going for bragging rights. I can tell by

looking at people, smelling them and maybe touching them, asking them

questions and directing I can get within a 10% margin of error of who

is Red and Blue in this town. Red. Blue. I bet you are 28. 24. You

look rough on it, mate! I had a paper round! City fan? I am not a

City fan. You are a City fan? No. What is your favourite kind of food?

Chocolate. I reckon she is... She is a Red. She is! Football fun?

Absolutely. Play a bit? I used to. You are a Blue? How did you know? I

can just tell. Have you a degree? No. United fan. I am from Stockport.

City fan? United. I am single. Definitely

united fan. Magic, it is a gift. Red? Yes! Blue? Yes! Blue? Show me

your nails. Blue. It is the wrong week for that colour! Blue. Red.

Blue. Yes. Yes! Yes! You are wrong. No way! We have proved some cliches

to be untrue. Not everybody from Stockport is a Manchester City ban

and is not every United fan comes from the Home Counties but it rains

a lot. How did I do? 11% out, not bad. At the end of the day, it is

not about a cliche, as long as football is a real winner.

Perhaps not the most scientific study we have ever seen! You might

be forgiven for thinking there is only one match this weekend but

there is plenty more to look forward to after the Manchester clubs

finished their dustup. Chelsea defend their perfect start

against Swansea on Sunday and Monday night's game has Sunderland

entertaining Everton. Liverpool finally play their first home game

of the season against champions Leicester.
