When you think of this iconic city and its glittering sporting heritage

:00:50.:01:02.

you think of the Nicks or the Yankees. Madison Square garden.

:01:03.:01:06.

Tennis at flushing meadow. Now there is a new kid on the block. After

:01:07.:01:11.

years of banging on the door soccer has finally found itself welcomed

:01:12.:01:15.

into the world of US sport. I have come to New York to find some

:01:16.:01:19.

familiar faces, stars from the Premier League who are lighting up

:01:20.:01:25.

the MLS. Being a coach wasn't something that I was planning.

:01:26.:01:32.

People saw something in me that I didn't see myself. Plus, I'll be

:01:33.:01:37.

gauging just how strong a hold the English Premier League has on the

:01:38.:01:43.

hearts of its new US fans. First, I am on my way to meet a

:01:44.:01:48.

three-time Premier League winner and England legend who has been prolific

:01:49.:01:55.

during his time Stateside. You might just recognise him.

:01:56.:02:02.

Fancy seeing you here. Good to see you. Good? Very good. Lampard! Super

:02:03.:02:15.

hit! Lampard goes for the chip, beautiful! Here you are. 38, still

:02:16.:02:22.

going. Yes. Still here! I feel it every morning actually. Is

:02:23.:02:28.

it beginning to take its toll, do you think? I think it's... This

:02:29.:02:31.

sounds negative, like a downward curve after 30. I am sure you know,

:02:32.:02:36.

yeah, I think I found myself having to adapt from probably 30 onwards,

:02:37.:02:42.

and yeah, it gets tougher, but it's probably the love for the game. It's

:02:43.:02:46.

the important thing. All the tough bits, the extra maintenance of the

:02:47.:02:50.

body and gym work and rest and recovery is worth it, if your mind

:02:51.:02:57.

still wants it and I am enjoying it. . It's finished off by Frank

:02:58.:03:06.

Lampard! Harrison to lamb pored. To the right foot. -- Lampard. His

:03:07.:03:10.

second of the game, it's 4-0 New York City! And playing in America,

:03:11.:03:16.

playing in the MLS, is that a little bit probably more manageable than

:03:17.:03:20.

the Premier League, I imagine? The reality is, and it's the question I

:03:21.:03:23.

get asked, what's the difference with the MLS and the Premier League,

:03:24.:03:26.

it's an obvious difference. The Premier League for me is the best in

:03:27.:03:28.

the world, tradition, great players, lots of money bringing in the best

:03:29.:03:32.

in the world. The MLS is a growing league. That's certainly improving,

:03:33.:03:36.

but yeah, of course, it's different and I think we have got in the team

:03:37.:03:39.

I am playing in we have some young kids running around, which is great,

:03:40.:03:43.

helping me, save the legs a little bit. That's tough f you think it's a

:03:44.:03:47.

holiday then it's not going to work that way. How it been playing for

:03:48.:03:52.

Patrick srooir, a player we all know well and he was at Manchester City,

:03:53.:03:56.

but for a while, coaching academy team and he has come here, tough

:03:57.:03:59.

job. Tough start he had, as well. He did have a tough start. The biggest

:04:00.:04:04.

credit I give to Patrick, he came with an idea and principle, he

:04:05.:04:07.

wanted to play from the back. New to us as a team. And preseason and

:04:08.:04:13.

early results weren't great and he could have thrown the towel in and

:04:14.:04:16.

kept it basic. He didn't. He kept doing what he wanted. We have really

:04:17.:04:19.

seen the team grow. Players have grown. They're learning from him.

:04:20.:04:22.

Everybody respects Patrick because of what he did in the game. As a

:04:23.:04:26.

manager he is proving himself in his own right here. We are sitting now

:04:27.:04:30.

towards the end of the season in the play-offs and with a fair chance of

:04:31.:04:33.

doing well, if we play to our best we could go all the way.

:04:34.:04:42.

# Come on you boys in wlu! I have been to one or two MLS games and the

:04:43.:04:46.

atmosphere is different than the English Premier League. I think it's

:04:47.:04:51.

a different culture. Again to go back to the Premier League, it's

:04:52.:04:55.

what we love about it is there is rivalry between teams. We play

:04:56.:04:59.

Chelsea at Tottenham, 3,000 fans that hate each other for that. It's

:05:00.:05:04.

more tribal. Very tribal. Here the culture, the fans come to be

:05:05.:05:07.

entertained, there isn't that rivalry of other teams and I like

:05:08.:05:11.

it. You can take a corner and you don't get called all sorts of names

:05:12.:05:14.

and stuff like that! You appreciate when you play in those conditions. I

:05:15.:05:20.

suppose in many ways the game is growing, do you think the fan base

:05:21.:05:25.

is growing for football or soccer? Yeah, I can't call it soccer. Do you

:05:26.:05:32.

not do it yet? I do speaking here. But not to you. Yeah, I think, it's

:05:33.:05:38.

certainly growing and the whole thing of walking around and not

:05:39.:05:41.

getting recognised is getting less and less. The game's global. We live

:05:42.:05:45.

in a small world these days, social media and it's caught on here.

:05:46.:05:51.

Lampard here for the hat trick. Will it be the first in New York City

:05:52.:05:57.

here? It is. Ladies and gentlemen, number eight, super Frank Lampard!

:05:58.:06:02.

I love it here. I am loving it. Great life, living in the city. Kids

:06:03.:06:05.

are coming over a lot. Me and Christine are really happy. It's

:06:06.:06:09.

been a great experience. If it ended tomorrow it's been amazing

:06:10.:06:14.

experience in terms of that little patch helpfully towards getting to

:06:15.:06:20.

the play-offs. You did it, as well. I got injured. I found it probably

:06:21.:06:24.

more for you I am guessing because you went to a real foreign place,

:06:25.:06:28.

here it's almost like you are at home with the language, etc but it

:06:29.:06:32.

broadens your horizon. I feel wiser for coming and living in a different

:06:33.:06:36.

country and working. Do you wish perhaps now you have experienced

:06:37.:06:39.

living in a different country perhaps would you have enjoyed a

:06:40.:06:42.

spell somewhere in Spain or Italy when you were younger? Yes and no.

:06:43.:06:47.

The yes is because I would have loved to have challenged myself.

:06:48.:06:50.

Loved to have tried to learn a language. I had interest from top

:06:51.:06:53.

clubs in Europe, I could have tested myself. Then I flip it and go, what

:06:54.:06:58.

would that have meant, leaving Chelsea, not being able to be part

:06:59.:07:02.

of an era and team that won the Champions League and the Europia Cup

:07:03.:07:06.

and titles, so the answer is no, basically. The grass isn't always

:07:07.:07:09.

greener. I had a great career in England. Those memories are my

:07:10.:07:13.

career, they're always with me now. How is the Premier League perceived

:07:14.:07:18.

here now? We know it's on NBC, there is a lot of games and people

:07:19.:07:20.

watching it and viewing figures are growing. Is it popular here? It's

:07:21.:07:26.

massive. Massive. I watch every game. You wake up on a Saturday with

:07:27.:07:33.

the time difference, there is a game on at eight, 3.00 game, you can get

:07:34.:07:39.

- you get the 5. 30pm game. Saturday mornings are done. Cup of tea and

:07:40.:07:44.

you watch them all. Great coverage, all the lads love it. Out here it's

:07:45.:07:48.

massive, growing really fast. And yourself, you keep a close eye

:07:49.:07:52.

clearly still on the Premier League. What are you thinking of this

:07:53.:07:55.

season? Fascinating. I am loving it. Loving watching it. I am waiting for

:07:56.:08:04.

the era to really kick in. I was excited when he came in. They needed

:08:05.:08:09.

a different angle from last year. Where do you think it went wrong at

:08:10.:08:14.

Chelsea? I think people relaxed. They won the league and relaxed. The

:08:15.:08:17.

minute you relax in football, you can't turn it back. You turn a

:08:18.:08:21.

switch on it doesn't turn back on again. Southampton lead by 3-1. I

:08:22.:08:28.

think that's why I like him, he is known as a discipline airian, he is

:08:29.:08:31.

working hard in training. I speak to players there and he is working them

:08:32.:08:35.

hard. Trying to organise them on the pitch. They'll be there or

:08:36.:08:38.

thereabouts but not sure they'll win this year but to get back in the

:08:39.:08:41.

Champions League will be seen as a positive if they get in the top

:08:42.:08:45.

four. Jose Mourinho, your old boss, at Manchester, has he still got it?

:08:46.:08:51.

He's still got it, of course he has. You know, again, I think he is

:08:52.:08:54.

trying to find the best team. Improvement there will be to get in

:08:55.:08:58.

the top four. Not sure they can win it with what they've got even though

:08:59.:09:01.

he is a great manager, there is something not there yet. Who do you

:09:02.:09:04.

fancy to win the Premier League this season? I fancy Manchester City. I

:09:05.:09:09.

think they bought well. I love Stones. They've the best goal scorer

:09:10.:09:14.

in the league in Aquero. He is a genius. Loved being there for a year

:09:15.:09:18.

being around him in training. Stand around in training and he will score

:09:19.:09:26.

goals for fun. Would you like to have played for Guardiolo? I would.

:09:27.:09:32.

I would love to even watch him take training. Very forward thinking. I

:09:33.:09:36.

would love to be part of that. You have had a fabulous and long career.

:09:37.:09:42.

Highlights looking back? Um... Champions League. Winning the

:09:43.:09:46.

Champions League is by far the greatest night of my life. Describe

:09:47.:09:53.

what that feels like to achieve the ultimate club trophy win. I just got

:09:54.:09:57.

shudders then you mentioning it, that sounds corny but I did. It

:09:58.:10:01.

resonates, not the game, I don't remember the game well, I didn't

:10:02.:10:04.

enjoy the game, I just wanted to get a result. Those games you don't

:10:05.:10:08.

always enjoy them. To say the flip, I enjoyed the hour or so on the

:10:09.:10:13.

pitch afterwards, all the fans down one end, I jumped in for a cuddle,

:10:14.:10:18.

you could smell alcohol. The boys had a good day out. It was

:10:19.:10:23.

brilliant, I look back and we should have won more. We won three and

:10:24.:10:27.

should have won five. But we did win that Champions League and that

:10:28.:10:34.

sticks out in my career. Lampard, Frank Lampard for Chelsea!

:10:35.:10:41.

That could be the championship. How would you like to be remembered?

:10:42.:10:49.

Um... Well, it's not easy to put in a short answer. I suppose hard

:10:50.:10:54.

working. Pride myself on hard work. I like to think I have been a good

:10:55.:10:58.

team-mate and hard worker. I suppose if I look back on the club career I

:10:59.:11:02.

would like to to have made a difference. Drogba can say that. So

:11:03.:11:09.

can you, don't worry. People sometimes say I - sometimes jump on

:11:10.:11:13.

the back of stuff. I like to think I made a difference to Chelsea and I

:11:14.:11:16.

hope people can remember that. For England obviously we didn't do that.

:11:17.:11:23.

I go back to hard working for England and very proud: Frank

:11:24.:11:29.

Lampard on his 609th Premier League appearance leaves the field for one

:11:30.:11:34.

final time. However long, whether you do another career or you don't,

:11:35.:11:38.

what does Frank Lampard want to do post-football? I certainly want to

:11:39.:11:44.

get coaching bammings and the FA have reached out and -- badges and

:11:45.:11:50.

the FA have reached out dps An Americanism! They've reached out to

:11:51.:11:56.

help me, sit down and plan how - because I said it recently, I do

:11:57.:12:02.

think the FA have to help players. To encourage them into coaching?

:12:03.:12:05.

Encourage it. You know what, otherwise the TV role is a great

:12:06.:12:09.

role, the media is there. If you lose them to that too early you lose

:12:10.:12:13.

them completely. At least it's an option. I have interest in coaching

:12:14.:12:16.

and I would like to test myself at that level. I am not making

:12:17.:12:19.

declarations here but if I get the badges I will possibly do that. I

:12:20.:12:22.

like the media stuff, I have had little bits of doing media and enjoy

:12:23.:12:26.

that too. It's highly skilled now. It's not the old-fashioned game of

:12:27.:12:30.

two halves tool. It's deep-thinking and I like that too. Those would be

:12:31.:12:33.

the two possibilities, I think. OK. Frank, thank you very much. Have a

:12:34.:12:38.

nice day! And you! Thanks, Gary. I appreciate it!

:12:39.:12:53.

The MLS has plenty of competition for the attention of US football

:12:54.:12:58.

fans. The Premier League is big business over here. With lots of

:12:59.:13:02.

recognisable figures broadcasting the English game to America each

:13:03.:13:07.

week. We went behind the scenes with NBC to watch them watching us.

:13:08.:13:17.

The following is an NBC sports presentation of the Premier League

:13:18.:13:24.

on NBC... In the studio this morning huge

:13:25.:13:29.

congratulations, a daddy for the second time... Typical Saturday, my

:13:30.:13:35.

alarm goes off about 3. 15 am. Get to the studio for about 4.00am. Hair

:13:36.:13:41.

and make-up. On air at 6. 30 am. Then we show all of the 3.00

:13:42.:13:45.

kick-offs, which are 10.00 here and the late game, as well. There are

:13:46.:13:51.

not that many better jobs, Gary probably does have a better job, I

:13:52.:13:57.

am probably second. Finding the Premier League when I was young was

:13:58.:14:00.

not easy and finding soccer for general in this country was not

:14:01.:14:04.

easy. I grew up, I remember it really well, Sunday mornings before

:14:05.:14:07.

Church I would constantly be searching for this game. When I was

:14:08.:14:11.

young the guys would make fun of me about it, it was Bolton that I fell

:14:12.:14:15.

in love with immediately because of JJ.

:14:16.:14:21.

There's nothing like American football here in the United States,

:14:22.:14:25.

they have a stranglehold on 20 million viewers, but you can tune

:14:26.:14:30.

into any Premier League match and after ten minutes, you would have no

:14:31.:14:34.

idea of what's going on. Great selling point for belief. This was a

:14:35.:14:39.

controversial moment, Watford, there is contact, I think it should be a

:14:40.:14:45.

penalty. The difficult dance for us every weekend is when you have the

:14:46.:14:49.

hard-core fan, you don't want to dumb it down to much where they feel

:14:50.:14:53.

you aren't talking to them, you wanted to feel like they're

:14:54.:14:56.

broadcast but you want to be inclusive. West Brom defender 's

:14:57.:15:02.

going down, brilliant from the Brazilian, Coutinho. We have to be a

:15:03.:15:05.

bit careful with some of the analysis and I think to be fair we

:15:06.:15:08.

have a nice balance of including everybody but also giving them some

:15:09.:15:15.

nuggets of information, that was interesting, I didn't know that.

:15:16.:15:19.

That's the balance we try and get, teaching but also getting people

:15:20.:15:23.

excited about the league. I don't want to say that there is a

:15:24.:15:26.

misperception around the world about the knowledge in our country but I

:15:27.:15:30.

think being an American we have that feeling. We have a generation of

:15:31.:15:33.

people my age who have grown up with the game. We were trying to get

:15:34.:15:39.

Match of the Day. A generation of people who now get the game, love

:15:40.:15:44.

the game and they would like to wanted more than anyone else. Jose

:15:45.:15:48.

Mourinho returning to Chelsea as the Manchester manager, what reaction is

:15:49.:15:56.

he going to get? I think he will get a good reaction. There are

:15:57.:15:58.

supporters groups all over the United States, you will find

:15:59.:16:02.

splintered supporter groups, not just in New York City, and they get

:16:03.:16:06.

together at the weekends. COMMENTATOR: The build-up has ended

:16:07.:16:11.

and we are under way. Jose Mourinho is in the away dugout. An

:16:12.:16:15.

opportunity, it's going to be the opening goal! It's a nightmare start

:16:16.:16:21.

to Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge. On Saturday we will

:16:22.:16:27.

have people coming over and it is like the NFL, people watching

:16:28.:16:33.

football, and America it is the morning so it is the perfect time to

:16:34.:16:38.

do it. Hazard to take it to the near post and a chance at the far post

:16:39.:16:43.

and it is in, Gary Cahill! I think the coverage is what makes it

:16:44.:16:47.

popular, everyone can watch the games, they can see their favourite

:16:48.:16:53.

team. Into the penalty area, Eden Hazard, getting the shot away and it

:16:54.:16:59.

is a delightful goal. You used to be streaming it, waking up at weird

:17:00.:17:03.

times, subscribing to weird channels but I can watch it on any channel,

:17:04.:17:09.

streaming it, it has been awesome. In by Pedro. The left foot, N'Golo

:17:10.:17:18.

Kante! It is four Mac we come here for pretty much every Chelsea match.

:17:19.:17:22.

You meet people here, they enjoy it and then they wanted themselves.

:17:23.:17:26.

People grew up watching Chelsea, Barcelona, wanting to be Messi,

:17:27.:17:35.

Hazard, not Michael Jordan now. And a mighty cheer greeting the final

:17:36.:17:36.

whistle. Don't tell me you are training! Good

:17:37.:17:48.

evening. To take on your first managerial

:17:49.:18:01.

role at a club that has only existed for less than two years would appear

:18:02.:18:04.

to be quite a daunting prospect but Patrick Vieira has guided New York

:18:05.:18:08.

City FC to the play-offs in his first season. Better find out how he

:18:09.:18:11.

did it! Vieira! Oh, it's a wonderful goal.

:18:12.:18:18.

So important, the Frenchman. Patrick, it is easy, this managerial

:18:19.:18:38.

game, isn't it? Easy? Not at all. You make it look easy. It is going

:18:39.:18:43.

well. It is going well but we had a difficult period. We are in a very

:18:44.:18:49.

good period at the moment. You spend most of your career in European

:18:50.:18:53.

football. Was it a big decision to come here, did you have to think

:18:54.:18:57.

about it long and hard? I had to think about it, yes, because when

:18:58.:19:00.

you have spent so much time in Europe it is really difficult to

:19:01.:19:05.

move but at the same time I was really convinced it was the right

:19:06.:19:11.

place for me. The people in Manchester, knowing that New York is

:19:12.:19:21.

part of the City group, knowing the people would help me as a coach and

:19:22.:19:25.

I made the right decision. You're enjoying it? I love it. How can we

:19:26.:19:33.

improve when we are in possession of the ball? Spending time in the

:19:34.:19:36.

Academy in Manchester before taking charge of this team I think was

:19:37.:19:42.

important because it made me believe that this is something I would

:19:43.:19:50.

enjoy. Being a coach wasn't something I was planning. And people

:19:51.:19:59.

saw something in me that I didn't see myself. How important are the

:20:00.:20:06.

three superstars for you? They've been fantastic. Not just on the

:20:07.:20:11.

field. The way that they interact with other players. Helping me to

:20:12.:20:19.

send a positive message to the group.

:20:20.:20:25.

Nice to see you. How's it going, enjoying it? Yeah. Patrick is doing

:20:26.:20:39.

good? A passionate coach. He has changed the team because he's a

:20:40.:20:48.

European coach. He gets it. Good to see you, mate. All good here? Do you

:20:49.:21:02.

remember it? Not actually born when I played! I was on Match of the Day

:21:03.:21:06.

one time and I had footage of a bunch of kids at Liverpool with Rafa

:21:07.:21:12.

Benitez and you were commentating. Not playing, though! Great to meet

:21:13.:21:20.

you, anyway. Good luck. Thank you very much. Can't be bad, this. It's

:21:21.:21:29.

lovely out here. Yeah, brilliant. I got a picture with Pirlo. He said a

:21:30.:21:39.

few words. He is a good lad. He looks so cool. Nice to meet you.

:21:40.:21:43.

Cheers. If I don't see you. What's the change now under Patrick

:21:44.:22:15.

Vieira? Of course Patrick does a lot of pushing in training, he is the

:22:16.:22:19.

most important guy in the production of the team. Getting victories and

:22:20.:22:28.

points. More stability than is the first year. Patrick is doing great,

:22:29.:22:32.

the standard he has brought to the club, the players, he has given us a

:22:33.:22:40.

lift. The dedication, he is here early and he leaves late. The

:22:41.:22:43.

evolution in such a short time, he has a great future.

:22:44.:22:52.

What's your target for this football club? To win trophies, to give this

:22:53.:23:00.

football club a proper identity about the way we want to play. It's

:23:01.:23:07.

a fantastic City. It's a diverse City. The City doesn't sleep, all

:23:08.:23:14.

the time it's moving. I want the teams to be like that, the team to

:23:15.:23:20.

play with energy, I want the team to reflect the City. It will take time

:23:21.:23:25.

to do it but hopefully working with Claudio and the people we can do it.

:23:26.:23:41.

You were a fiercely competitive football. How is it being a manager,

:23:42.:23:51.

though? It is difficult, it is difficult. It is difficult because

:23:52.:23:56.

when a manager you on the bench. Having the feeling that you don't

:23:57.:24:01.

control anything. Ask them to come back quickly. You make the decision

:24:02.:24:06.

but you aren't on the field and hoping. We are going to send him

:24:07.:24:13.

next to David. It would be difficult for a long time and only experience

:24:14.:24:16.

will help you to deal with it better. We are going to put on Jason

:24:17.:24:25.

and you are going to play at four. Jason is central. What's important

:24:26.:24:31.

for me is to understand who I am as a manager and what I want to

:24:32.:24:37.

achieve. I think if I want to be really successful, that's what I

:24:38.:24:43.

have to do. But if I try to do something like Mancini, the players

:24:44.:24:50.

will smell that it isn't Patrick and when they smell that, it's over.

:24:51.:24:53.

Heh, heh! Close to David! Do you have further ambitions to

:24:54.:25:34.

manage, you know, one of the big clubs at home? I think every coach

:25:35.:25:41.

does around the world. I want to manage the biggest club in Europe

:25:42.:25:45.

one day, no doubt about it and this is what drives me. You know, it may

:25:46.:25:53.

happen, it may not happen. The way that my work will dictate the next

:25:54.:26:00.

step but I'm really happy where I am at the moment and that is important

:26:01.:26:10.

for me. This difficult period, allowed us to be a force on the

:26:11.:26:12.

pitch and to be where we are today. I wish you well, Patrick, thanks.

:26:13.:26:24.

Nice talking to you. A very busy week in the Premier League, let's

:26:25.:26:26.

look back at the action. Mane, he has Coutinho in support.

:26:27.:26:41.

Coutinho! Fabulously finished. Only two goals for your team? Sorry? How

:26:42.:26:49.

was it only two? Foster. A terrific save from Foster. I think it was

:26:50.:26:54.

faster. Oxlade-Chamberlain into the penalty area. Offside, Arsenal

:26:55.:27:00.

thought they had won. At least you can have a drink on your first day.

:27:01.:27:05.

When you win, you deserve it but not when you don't. Winston Reid! He's

:27:06.:27:12.

won it for West Ham. Offside, you don't want me to say anything else.

:27:13.:27:17.

Should be given offside. Have you spoken to the officiating team? Yeah

:27:18.:27:21.

they think it's on-site. You obviously disagree? -- on site.

:27:22.:27:31.

That's what I just said. -- onside. Overplaying that, Redmond! 1-0

:27:32.:27:37.

Southampton. Playing the way that you want to play? The way I want to

:27:38.:27:41.

play is passing to the striker. Dear oh dear. Sissoko has caught

:27:42.:27:53.

Harry Arter. Pete isn't going to let this go, he's incensed. -- he isn't.

:27:54.:28:00.

That's all from The Premier League Show this week but it seems that

:28:01.:28:04.

soccer is finally starting to find its feet in America. Who knows, the

:28:05.:28:08.

way it's going, they may even start calling it football! I'm going to be

:28:09.:28:14.

returning to the UK for Match of the Day on Saturday and you can catch up

:28:15.:28:17.

with the weekend's action across the BBC.

:28:18.:28:35.

Gabby Logan will be back next week, Wednesday at 10pm. Goodbye from the

:28:36.:28:41.

Big Apple.
