Welcome to The Premier League Show. This week we are in west London on

:00:40.:00:45.

the fashionable Kings Road ahead of Rose's first return to Stamford

:00:46.:00:48.

Bridge as manager of Manchester United. We will delve into that and

:00:49.:00:53.

all of the other Premier League stories later with Graeme Le Saux

:00:54.:00:56.

over pastries and coffee. But first we had south of the river to Crystal

:00:57.:01:02.

Palace, Alan Pardew took over at the Eagles in 2015, he had a top ten

:01:03.:01:06.

finish in his first season and an FA Cup final in his second. He has

:01:07.:01:12.

given Gary Lineker Access -- exclusive access into the life of a

:01:13.:01:14.

top manager. Why are you doing that in front of a

:01:15.:01:30.

camera like that? We want some positivity, boys.

:01:31.:01:36.

We have talked all week about a missing but first man, so put

:01:37.:01:39.

crosses in, give yourself a chance of missing him. You might need to

:01:40.:01:45.

lift it, might need to hit it early. Get yourself ready, three or four

:01:46.:01:49.

minutes on the process. Get your pads on, get taped up.

:01:50.:01:53.

Always on the move, just trying to get on the ball, trying to get on

:01:54.:01:57.

the ball, come in there, stay wide. Think about getting on the ball. You

:01:58.:02:02.

will have to be our best player today.

:02:03.:02:04.

The Buck four needs to be narrow when we defend, we don't want Joe

:02:05.:02:08.

running into the back four all the time. Keep the distance, otherwise

:02:09.:02:13.

we end up flats and can't get to the ball.

:02:14.:02:18.

These guys will not be due for pace, they are looking for clever stuff.

:02:19.:02:24.

-- these guys will not be to you for fake -- beat you for pace.

:02:25.:02:36.

And it has gone in! Pardew, 4-3, Palace!

:02:37.:02:53.

Classic English football right there. Trying to get the team is

:02:54.:03:01.

playing the same way throughout? Yes. There is Director Bright.

:03:02.:03:12.

You have been a manager for a long time for lots of clubs, how has the

:03:13.:03:17.

Premier League change for managers over the years, do you feel?

:03:18.:03:22.

It has changed. I think social media plays a big part now, the pressure

:03:23.:03:27.

that comes on us, because that generates you guys into action. So

:03:28.:03:33.

there is a bit more scrutiny on the game and the results.

:03:34.:03:38.

Do you follow social media? Have a little look. So you keep an eye on

:03:39.:03:43.

what the fans say, because they don't hold back?

:03:44.:03:46.

No, but you can't live your life by it. You would never be able to get

:03:47.:03:51.

yourself up. It is tough enough as a football manager these days to keep

:03:52.:03:55.

yourself positive all the time, particularly with the younger

:03:56.:04:00.

players. Every generation seems to be, at the moment, every year, more

:04:01.:04:04.

ingrained in their phone. I know you are like that with your Twitter.

:04:05.:04:11.

Occasionally. So it is something that you have to understand. The

:04:12.:04:15.

bigger difference, I think, is the ownership of the football clubs is

:04:16.:04:20.

becoming an issue for football managers up and down the country. In

:04:21.:04:26.

what sense? There are chairman and chief executive is getting far too

:04:27.:04:34.

involved in the football matters. Have you got the balance with Steve

:04:35.:04:39.

Parish? I think so, I have a great relationship with him, I admire him

:04:40.:04:43.

and what he has done in business and the way he has conducted himself,

:04:44.:04:47.

particularly how he has conducted business at this football club. He

:04:48.:04:51.

has let the managers get on with it, of course. Because a hands-on

:04:52.:04:56.

chairman he does the financial deals, which suits me, but of course

:04:57.:05:01.

he wants my decision and my final say on all the stuff we do.

:05:02.:05:05.

Recruitment, you can't believe how much detail be put into that now.

:05:06.:05:12.

Everybody knows he is a good player, there is no question. What makes a

:05:13.:05:20.

good chairman? Gobbler if he comes back to me and

:05:21.:05:24.

says it is worth a go, we will look at it.

:05:25.:05:28.

I think a good chairman is very important if you lose. We lost at

:05:29.:05:33.

the weekend. His reaction was very professional. Didn't play very well.

:05:34.:05:40.

Unusual. He asked me the reasons why, he expects me to get on with

:05:41.:05:46.

it. Also and be very supportive in difficult times. Tell me how you go

:05:47.:05:52.

about recruiting? You brought in four big names? The example would be

:05:53.:05:58.

the difference that I have here and Newcastle. At Newcastle the

:05:59.:06:04.

financial elements came first, and then the technical side was, OK,

:06:05.:06:08.

that should fit. Whereas here the luxury I have is that the technical

:06:09.:06:15.

aspect and how it fits comes first, that is most important. How was it

:06:16.:06:20.

different at Newcastle? Obviously you were frustrated at times, they

:06:21.:06:24.

are now in the Championship, do you think they got it wrong?

:06:25.:06:28.

I would like to think that they have learned some lessons. I think Mike

:06:29.:06:35.

at Sports Direct has learned some lessons, and I think he has had to

:06:36.:06:39.

learn lessons on the football side. I kept nagging and telling him that

:06:40.:06:42.

I thought the process was wrong that they were doing, I made that very

:06:43.:06:47.

clear behind closed doors, never in public, but I don't think he will

:06:48.:06:50.

have a problem with me saying it now. The be all and end all is the

:06:51.:06:54.

vision of the manager, where he wants to take the team forward, that

:06:55.:06:59.

must come first. Then of course there is a financial element.

:07:00.:07:05.

Stephen would not let me sign... If I wanted to bring Neymar... Really?!

:07:06.:07:11.

He would probably fancy it and might sell a few things exoneration but it

:07:12.:07:16.

all has to fit after. These are the players that fit what we need. Go

:07:17.:07:22.

and get me one of them. Benteke a jumping superbly.

:07:23.:07:29.

Christian Benteke, how much thought went into that move, that was a lot

:07:30.:07:34.

of money for Crystal Palace to buy somebody like that, did you have to

:07:35.:07:39.

push the chairman? Yes, sweet talking, had a couple of dinners

:07:40.:07:44.

with him and everything else, yeah. I kept saying, Steve, this is a

:07:45.:07:48.

no-brainer. Give Liverpool 40 million. He wouldn't, by the way.

:07:49.:07:58.

You love closing down, don't pretend you don't! Look at that smile! That

:07:59.:08:08.

is what we need tomorrow. Do you ever look at people coming

:08:09.:08:17.

in, managers who have come into it and always have great players like

:08:18.:08:23.

Guardiola, are their teams that you occasionally NVA tinge, or more? A

:08:24.:08:28.

little bit more! Do you ever think, why wasn't I given a chance that one

:08:29.:08:33.

of those clubs? You kind of earn the right sometimes to get in that

:08:34.:08:38.

position, and I respect that, Jurgen Klopp, Guardiola, Mourinho have

:08:39.:08:43.

earned the right to be at those sorts of clubs. I have not yet. But

:08:44.:08:47.

there is another side to football management and getting the best out

:08:48.:08:51.

of the group you have, that is all I can focus on. I have always tried to

:08:52.:08:56.

do that. At Newcastle I had a very unbalanced team, very unbalanced

:08:57.:09:00.

squad at times, very difficult to pick up results when you don't feel

:09:01.:09:03.

that the players being signed for you fit what you want, it makes it a

:09:04.:09:09.

little bit frustrating. I was a little bit frustrated. I don't have

:09:10.:09:13.

that excuse here. Likewise, I think with the top managers, it is always

:09:14.:09:19.

a great challenge. In a way, from where I have come from, and you

:09:20.:09:22.

probably played against me all you would not have remembered me much,

:09:23.:09:27.

it has been a long road for me to get to this and I am very proud to

:09:28.:09:32.

be here. I enjoy going up against them, I have beaten a few of them

:09:33.:09:37.

and seen a lot of them come and go already, supposedly very good

:09:38.:09:41.

managers. Get it into the front!

:09:42.:09:51.

Great ball, son! Go on! Shoot! CHEERING

:09:52.:10:00.

How does your moods reflect results? As a younger manager, the emotion of

:10:01.:10:03.

the defeat clouds your thinking a little bit. You're angry,

:10:04.:10:14.

frustrated, when you get a bit more experienced I think you can have a

:10:15.:10:17.

bit more thought process of why was that?

:10:18.:10:25.

When I was younger, you know, I would be a lot angrier than I am

:10:26.:10:31.

now. A lot more frustrated than I am

:10:32.:10:35.

today. That does not mean to say my winning

:10:36.:10:41.

passion is nonetheless, and desperate, desperate until the next

:10:42.:10:45.

game now. What a save!

:10:46.:10:51.

How has it changed, managing players over the years? In our day, it was

:10:52.:11:01.

different, can you still do that nowadays? Can you have a rant? If

:11:02.:11:07.

you have got a five that 11 English player in the dressing room, I could

:11:08.:11:12.

probably still do that. -- if you have got five out of 11 English

:11:13.:11:16.

players. A French player or an African player, if you destroy them

:11:17.:11:20.

at half-time or a very critical of them at half-time, they take it very

:11:21.:11:25.

personally. It is not natural for them, they want to have a solution.

:11:26.:11:29.

There is more thought process to them. Johan Botha by, for example, I

:11:30.:11:41.

will still be strong with -- Yohan Cabaye, for example, I will still be

:11:42.:11:45.

strong with Yohan Cabaye but not in front of the group, I will do

:11:46.:11:50.

privately. Are you trying to change things a little? Good god I

:11:51.:11:54.

inherited a team that had come out of the Championship, if I was

:11:55.:11:56.

talking positively about them I would say that you are brilliant on

:11:57.:12:01.

the break. Because they were not true good at keeping the ball or

:12:02.:12:06.

dictating the pace. This year I have tried to change and say that we

:12:07.:12:10.

cannot go on playing like that. It might keep as 15th or 16th but it

:12:11.:12:18.

will not get this into the top ten or Europe. Has less to winning the

:12:19.:12:23.

league made it difficult for managers like you, because perhaps

:12:24.:12:25.

the expectation from the chairman and the fans is greater, if they can

:12:26.:12:31.

do it, why can't we? I think it's nice to have a little bit of that.

:12:32.:12:35.

Not that it bothers me, if I am honest. It's astonishing, amazing. A

:12:36.:12:43.

miracle, really. I don't know what you want to call it, and I know it

:12:44.:12:48.

is your team, but I loved it, all of my players wanted Leicester to

:12:49.:12:52.

hammer one of the top clubs. And look at what of the top clubs have

:12:53.:12:56.

gone, this is the problem, they were all a bit embarrassed, let's get the

:12:57.:13:00.

best manager we can add through money at it and make sure it does

:13:01.:13:07.

not happen again. -- best manager we can and throw money at it.

:13:08.:13:13.

The whole England thing, we have had a few stories over the last few

:13:14.:13:18.

weeks, obviously, with Big Sam and what happened, and the Euros and

:13:19.:13:22.

another failure, there is more talk about who will be the next England

:13:23.:13:26.

manager. You have been mentioned on occasion. I think this whole England

:13:27.:13:30.

thing is becoming a bit of a problem, if I'm honest. It might be

:13:31.:13:35.

a good time to let Gareth habit, I think. You know him well. I know him

:13:36.:13:49.

very well and I think he has the attributes to do it. I have never

:13:50.:13:51.

been offered the job. If I am offered the job, I am English, would

:13:52.:13:54.

I turn it down? I don't know. That is another question. I think I have

:13:55.:13:58.

the experience to do it, I think I can do it one day. I don't know if

:13:59.:14:01.

this is the time. I just want to hope, like you do, that at some

:14:02.:14:02.

point we get it right. This season, for Crystal Palace,

:14:03.:14:19.

what do you want? I think we can do well in the league this year. For

:14:20.:14:24.

Crystal Palace, what is doing well in the lead? Success for this club

:14:25.:14:32.

is being in the top ten, without a shadow of a doubt. From tenth to

:14:33.:14:38.

15th, I would say, in this particular year, in the change of

:14:39.:14:43.

style, is pretty good. Anywhere below that, you're in that area

:14:44.:14:47.

where it isn't a good season, and you're going to start reflecting and

:14:48.:14:51.

having a look at changing the squad again. I don't want to do that. I

:14:52.:14:57.

think this team in the next two years could be decent. Denying space

:14:58.:15:02.

in the units when they have it, switching play, quick throws. If you

:15:03.:15:07.

switch the play, they cannot press you, the way they play. It's

:15:08.:15:11.

impossible. If you see them going back to Joe on the edge of the

:15:12.:15:15.

box... Don't worry about that. You've got time. Get back in your

:15:16.:15:21.

halt and get your goal. Come on! Good luck. Good luck, Joe. Good

:15:22.:15:31.

luck, Fraser. Usurer imagination. These strong today, mate.

:15:32.:15:45.

I promised you coffee and pastries. Welcome to The Premier League Show.

:15:46.:15:55.

Alan Pardew does feel, one of very few Englishmen in the Premier League

:15:56.:16:00.

as a manager, and also a difficult life. If you have a good

:16:01.:16:03.

relationship with your chairman it makes thing a little easier, and he

:16:04.:16:10.

certainly has that. He is close to Steve and Allen in that sense. The

:16:11.:16:13.

fact they work so well together can only benefit what happens on the

:16:14.:16:19.

pitch. If you've got an understanding and relationship with

:16:20.:16:22.

the person responsible for the purse strings, you've got an opportunity

:16:23.:16:26.

to get the right players for you. And to play as you want, which

:16:27.:16:33.

didn't happen to him at Newcastle. His comments about the relationship

:16:34.:16:38.

that he had up at Newcastle were not... It is fascinating to see

:16:39.:16:41.

where that line is drawn. It's all right to go for dinner with the

:16:42.:16:47.

chairman and enjoy his company socially, but you have business

:16:48.:16:50.

decisions to make ultimately, and different opinions at times. It's

:16:51.:16:57.

fascinating how they manage that relationship. The recruitment is

:16:58.:17:01.

interesting, and the responsibility for what they've spent. They've

:17:02.:17:05.

spent big this season. ?30 million for a striker is a lot for Palace.

:17:06.:17:11.

So interesting for him to say top ten to top 15. A few years ago, if

:17:12.:17:16.

you spend that on a striker, you'd be expecting to knock on the doors

:17:17.:17:21.

of European places. The money has gone up and they are not alone in

:17:22.:17:25.

that. Players are more expensive, and you have got to keep up. He has

:17:26.:17:31.

to be careful answering that question. It is a difficult question

:17:32.:17:36.

is a manager, because if he says top ten, we start to question him if he

:17:37.:17:42.

doesn't reach that target. Realistically, the players they have

:17:43.:17:45.

bought, the way the team is set up, I think a top-10 finish is

:17:46.:17:51.

realistic. If they can keep that momentum, they've got a fantastic

:17:52.:17:58.

chance. Is a top 15 Place success? For all of them in those positions,

:17:59.:18:04.

a bad season would be 15th. None of them can afford to get relegated

:18:05.:18:08.

because of the baggage that comes with that. It's more than just the

:18:09.:18:13.

money. It is really important for Crystal Palace to make sure they

:18:14.:18:17.

have the most momentum out of the teams around them. He is not going

:18:18.:18:21.

for that England manager 's job at any time soon! Let's have a look

:18:22.:18:28.

back at the last seven days in the Premier League.

:18:29.:18:39.

COMMENTATOR: Sets up Gosling! The look on Mike Phelan's face tells you

:18:40.:18:42.

all you need to know. Towards Mesut Ozil. Happy birthday!

:18:43.:18:58.

Disappointed, but there is some positives as well. Hopefully, we can

:18:59.:19:02.

build on that. Lukaku goes on and scores! We showed unbelievable

:19:03.:19:17.

spirit today. COMMENTATOR: 2-0! Two goals by Joe

:19:18.:19:23.

Allen. In the last games, there's been a distinct change.

:19:24.:19:35.

COMMENTATOR: Austin is in! I love to score goals, and I want to celebrate

:19:36.:19:47.

everyone I score. What a save! The reactions from their crowd was

:19:48.:19:56.

disappointment. Here are next weekend's fixtures. Eight games in

:19:57.:19:57.

total on Saturday. Despite winning the title three

:19:58.:20:12.

times in two spells at Stamford Bridge, the special one's

:20:13.:20:16.

acrimonious departure last season still stings. His career has taken

:20:17.:20:21.

him from Porto to Man United, but he will always be made in Chelsea. I

:20:22.:20:31.

think I'm the special one. COMMENTATOR: Here's the man who has

:20:32.:20:37.

made it all happen. Here's Drogba. Magnificent! Chelsea are champions.

:20:38.:20:48.

Chelsea have scored. Chelsea are the first FA Cup winners at the Wembley.

:20:49.:20:56.

The special one has left the club. What a shocker! Jose Mourinho is

:20:57.:21:03.

heading back to English Premier League side, Chelsea. We are

:21:04.:21:10.

ecstatic. It is a fantastic day. COMMENTATOR: Fabregas! Their first

:21:11.:21:24.

title in five years. I'm very happy. I'm very proud. At the same time, I

:21:25.:21:31.

need a rest. I'm tired. Jose Mourinho has been sacked. Nine

:21:32.:21:36.

defeats this season. One point above the relegation zone.

:21:37.:21:47.

Stamford Bridge is just a stone's throw away from here, and it will be

:21:48.:21:56.

a fantastic called in when he comes out there for the first time as

:21:57.:22:00.

manager of Manchester United. What reception do you think he will get?

:22:01.:22:05.

I think he will love it. I bet he can't wait, because he will get all

:22:06.:22:09.

the attention. I bet he will come out early and sit in the dugout. I

:22:10.:22:14.

think it will be a good reception from the Chelsea fans, despite the

:22:15.:22:19.

cloud he left under. He did a huge amount for that team in two spells.

:22:20.:22:23.

I think fans will remember that. As soon as the teams come out on the

:22:24.:22:27.

pitch, they will forget about that and then treat him as any other

:22:28.:22:33.

opposing manager, especially if his team does well. I hope there's a bit

:22:34.:22:38.

more entertainment about this batch. I'm hopeful, but I'm also realistic.

:22:39.:22:43.

I don't think any Chelsea fans will be surprised at the way he set up

:22:44.:22:49.

his side to face Liverpool. He's very pragmatic about the way he

:22:50.:22:53.

plays a size that he sees as challengers for the title. So why

:22:54.:22:57.

wouldn't he be any different at Stamford Bridge? Against Liverpool,

:22:58.:23:03.

he couldn't afford to lose that game, that would be three games lost

:23:04.:23:09.

in the first eight matches. It is a good base for Manchester United. I

:23:10.:23:14.

expect them to start the same at Stamford Bridge. Funnily enough, I

:23:15.:23:18.

was at the game on Monday, and in the first half, Pogba played further

:23:19.:23:24.

forward. He didn't play in a three-man midfield. He supported

:23:25.:23:28.

Ibrahimovic. So they were a bit more positive in the first half than

:23:29.:23:32.

people believe, although as the game went on, they started to withdraw.

:23:33.:23:37.

He felt that a point was good enough at this stage of the season,

:23:38.:23:43.

pragmatic, as you say. Stage one of what he wants to achieve and Man

:23:44.:23:49.

United is making sure that team is disciplined, understand its

:23:50.:23:52.

responsibilities out of possession, and then build the creativity from

:23:53.:23:57.

there. I expect to see the same again at the weekend against

:23:58.:24:01.

Chelsea. Let's talk about Conte and how he has taken to live in the

:24:02.:24:05.

Premier League and at Chelsea. He seemed a bit cautious at first. Was

:24:06.:24:10.

he working out personnel and the Premier League? I think he wanted to

:24:11.:24:15.

look at the players. Quality suffered a lot from the effects of

:24:16.:24:20.

last season. Morale was pretty low. He's given them a chance to prove

:24:21.:24:25.

themselves. They have been inconsistent, and some of their

:24:26.:24:30.

players, like Hazard, are not firing on all cylinders. Now he has changed

:24:31.:24:34.

the system, they look more comfortable. Just one match with the

:24:35.:24:39.

new system, but they looked in total control against a poor Leicester

:24:40.:24:44.

side. I think he will stick with his back three and get more out of

:24:45.:24:49.

players like Hazard and Pedro. You will have different systems, and it

:24:50.:24:53.

will be intriguing. It will be who can control the ball and frustrate

:24:54.:24:58.

their opponent. It's whether Chelsea will take the game to Man United,

:24:59.:25:02.

and whether Man United will put the block up again and try and score on

:25:03.:25:07.

the counterattack. Do you think the emotion of the situation would

:25:08.:25:17.

bother a character like Mourinho? I think he will love the attention

:25:18.:25:20.

when he gets out there, but once the game starts, his aim will be to get

:25:21.:25:23.

out of there with one point, all three points. It has been raining

:25:24.:25:29.

penalties in the Premier League, with six awarded last weekend alone.

:25:30.:25:34.

We asked Mark Schwarzer to step into our studio and give us some tips on

:25:35.:25:39.

saving from the spot. This weekend we saw just how

:25:40.:25:43.

valuable goalkeepers can be to their team when it comes to spot kicks.

:25:44.:25:47.

There have been more penalties awarded at this stage of the season

:25:48.:25:52.

than in the previous five years, four penalties in every round of

:25:53.:25:57.

Premier League fixtures. What can keepers do to increase their chances

:25:58.:26:04.

of being a heroresearch. Study your opponents' technique and know where

:26:05.:26:09.

they are likely to shoot. Secondly, have a good starting position, on

:26:10.:26:13.

your toes with your body weight forward. Thirdly, be confident

:26:14.:26:17.

enough to stay on your feet and let the penalty taker make the first

:26:18.:26:23.

move. On Saturday, we had Man City against Everton, and De Bruyne. The

:26:24.:26:29.

keeper made himself look big, which says, beat me. Make the first move.

:26:30.:26:38.

He waits to the last second and is able to use his lament to make a

:26:39.:26:44.

save to his left side. Same game, but now Aguero against the keeper.

:26:45.:26:51.

Aguero loves to watch the keeper and wait as long as possible, but of

:26:52.:26:55.

course, the keeper waited longer, and made another great save.

:26:56.:27:08.

Then Leicester V Swansea, and Mahrez against Fabianski. Last season,

:27:09.:27:17.

Mahrez took several penalties. All of them were low, and Fabianski

:27:18.:27:23.

would have known this. It's all about reading which way he would go.

:27:24.:27:30.

As he steps up, you can see by his body language there is only one way

:27:31.:27:34.

he can go. And Fabianski reacts really well. Now Bournemouth against

:27:35.:27:41.

Palace. Boruc is one of the best at Reading penalties. He reads Cabaye's

:27:42.:27:49.

body position well. History shows that Cabaye likes to hit them high.

:27:50.:27:56.

Spurs the Man City. A different approach, maybe because Lamela is

:27:57.:28:03.

not a regular penalty taker. Out of position, looking disinterested. It

:28:04.:28:09.

is not until Lamela's ran up that he decides to shuffle across the goal,

:28:10.:28:13.

until finally setting himself for the kick. It was his way of putting

:28:14.:28:19.

Lamela off. With more penalties being awarded than before, keepers

:28:20.:28:23.

that are strong in these situations will be invaluable.

:28:24.:28:28.

I know you didn't take many penalties, but did you give any way?

:28:29.:28:33.

Just one, for handball against Middlesbrough. But it wasn't a

:28:34.:28:37.

penalty, and I'm still bitter and frustrated about it! Thank you for

:28:38.:28:42.

joining us today. Next week, Gary Lineker travels to the US to see how

:28:43.:28:47.

the Premier League is stateside, and meets up with some old friends. If

:28:48.:28:52.

you ever missed a programme, you can catch up on the iPlayer. From both

:28:53.:28:57.

of us, thanks for watching, and good night.
