This is where the hard work is done, far away from the crowds. Away from

:00:41.:00:48.

the glamour of Centre Court. It is day in, day out, Whee Kim, week out.

:00:49.:00:53.

That is what Andy Murray has been doing for decades and why the effort

:00:54.:01:00.

he has put in in training has made him one of the most dependable men

:01:01.:01:03.

in British sport. We need more of them. He had an Olympic gold medal

:01:04.:01:11.

and a first Wimbledon title. He has gone back to the coaching

:01:12.:01:15.

relationship which worked best for him, by reintroducing the imposing

:01:16.:01:20.

figure of Ivan Lendl. So, on Today at Wimbledon, we will see how Murray

:01:21.:01:24.

started his campaign on Centre Court against fellow Brit Liam Broady.

:01:25.:01:31.

Opening Centre Court was the defending champion Serena Williams.

:01:32.:01:34.

And we will see Johanna Konta, the first British woman to be seeded

:01:35.:01:40.

here in over 30 years in a tough first-round match.

:01:41.:01:45.

Well, we had the most wonderful morning and it was a lovely day

:01:46.:01:48.

until about half past four when it started raining. It has stopped now

:01:49.:01:53.

but there is no play out there. There is no one left around in the

:01:54.:01:57.

grounds. Luckily, here in the studio, where we are sheltering

:01:58.:02:01.

because the threat of more rain, we had two Wimbledon champions, Pat

:02:02.:02:05.

Cash and Martina Navratilova. Good evening to both of you. Did you get

:02:06.:02:11.

caught in the rain, Martina? Not me, I

:02:12.:02:25.

escaped it. I think Pat did. On my Harley. My mopeds. Bike. They are

:02:26.:02:29.

here to discuss and buy just the day's play or what was possible of

:02:30.:02:32.

it. Andy Murray has had a record-breaking clay-court season

:02:33.:02:36.

and just one a fifth title at Queen's.

:02:37.:02:39.

He was playing against a man he knows well. Having not met a fellow

:02:40.:02:42.

Briton in ten years on the tour, along come three in five matches. He

:02:43.:02:50.

beat Aljaz Bedene and Kyle Edmund at Queen's and Murray was drawn against

:02:51.:02:55.

Liam Broady, the British number six. As a junior, Broady won the junior

:02:56.:03:02.

titles. His sister Naomi lost her first-round match yesterday but was

:03:03.:03:03.

in the players box to offer support. At the French Open, Murray opened

:03:04.:03:16.

with two really hard five set matches, and something that took its

:03:17.:03:21.

toll when it came to the final. Here at Wimbledon, he is sharp and ready.

:03:22.:03:25.

He broke early and took the first set 6-2. It is not the Broady was

:03:26.:03:30.

playing badly, he wasn't. There were some fantastic rallies. It is just

:03:31.:03:37.

Murray's speed of reaction, the angles he finds, his scurrying

:03:38.:03:40.

ability is superior to almost anyone on the tour. Let's pick up the match

:03:41.:03:48.

with commentary at the start of the third set. Andrew Castle and Tim

:03:49.:03:50.

Henman in the commentary box. ANDREW CASTLE: Oh, yes, made it. TIM

:03:51.:04:56.

HENMAN: Broady coming to the net. I was just reflecting on Murray's

:04:57.:05:02.

approach. He has been to the net ten times and won nine of the points.

:05:03.:05:08.

To be successful against Djokovic, he needs to approach the net more

:05:09.:05:11.

often. Great play from Murray. He is so

:05:12.:07:23.

athletic. Let's rejoin it in the third set.

:07:24.:08:34.

UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. This is an interesting one

:08:35.:08:41.

here. Murray was unsure whether Broady's shot was long. After we saw

:08:42.:08:47.

his forehand looking like it was going to go long, he challenged the

:08:48.:08:55.

call. It stands. Mr Murray has two challenges remaining.

:08:56.:10:06.

With the best will in the world, there is no chance that Liam Broady

:10:07.:10:12.

can stay at the back of the court and beat Andy Murray. Some

:10:13.:10:17.

impressive hitting, but it is recognising when he can move up the

:10:18.:10:18.

court little bit to get more reward. Murray is able to soak up the

:10:19.:10:34.

pressure. That is another highlight for Broady. He got the week return

:10:35.:10:43.

from the serve into the body. Now he is able to get into the court and

:10:44.:10:45.

execute the big forehand. And that is a game for a Liam

:10:46.:11:36.

Broady. Hard to come by stop STUDIO: A really good hold for a

:11:37.:11:40.

Liam Broady but Murray maintained his advantage for a single break and

:11:41.:11:46.

let's rejoin him serving for the match.

:11:47.:13:15.

He has certainly settled into this match just as James Ward did against

:13:16.:13:19.

Djokovic yesterday. It didn't look that far rain. --

:13:20.:13:57.

that far in. It was a bad challenge! Job done for Andy Murray in straight

:13:58.:14:40.

sets. He is into the second round. Liam Broady, obviously delighted to

:14:41.:14:45.

have shared the court with this champion.

:14:46.:14:47.

STUDIO: Hick was pretty efficient in the end. The crowd loved it. One

:14:48.:14:53.

hour and 43 minutes was the time -- it was pretty efficient.

:14:54.:15:01.

The first matches are difficult because the build-up is quite hard.

:15:02.:15:09.

There is a lot more attention and pressures than at other events but

:15:10.:15:13.

once I get out on the court and get through the first match and start to

:15:14.:15:17.

settle down, I come into the tournament, so I am glad I managed

:15:18.:15:22.

to get the first one out of the way quite quickly. It is tough to put

:15:23.:15:28.

into words. I have grown up playing tennis, dreaming of playing on

:15:29.:15:33.

Centre Court to players like Andy. I think I acquitted myself pretty

:15:34.:15:37.

well. I think I could have played better. I think Andy could have

:15:38.:15:42.

probably played better as well. But Andy is a champion, he is a

:15:43.:15:47.

Wimbledon champion and number two in the world. He got what he wanted, a

:15:48.:15:54.

straight sets victory today pretty comfortable and goes to show why he

:15:55.:15:58.

is where he is. You can see how well Andy Murray is served. His first

:15:59.:16:03.

serve was working fro well. To win 88 points on the serve, those are

:16:04.:16:10.

Federer numbers of ten years ago. Andy has been working on his serve,

:16:11.:16:16.

it is clearly paying off. He is able to be more adventurous on the

:16:17.:16:21.

opponent's serve. Pat, what did you make of Murray today? It was a good

:16:22.:16:26.

performance. The first match of the tournament, feeling your way around

:16:27.:16:30.

the court, he is playing a mate, he knows his game pretty well. I

:16:31.:16:37.

thought Liam played pretty well, particularly in the third set. Andy

:16:38.:16:40.

produced a few unforced errors there. It was very under control by

:16:41.:16:43.

then. He was serving well. There were a few times when he was down

:16:44.:16:50.

0-30, and bang, bang, bang. It is like Federer. He comes out and goes

:16:51.:16:56.

ace, ace and moves on. That is priceless to have that skill to be

:16:57.:17:00.

able to do that or confidence to be able to do that. One of the things

:17:01.:17:04.

that Lendl has tried to say to him is don't be soft out on court, don't

:17:05.:17:12.

be generous. I was looking for a little dip somewhat, a little blip

:17:13.:17:15.

where you are set and a break up and he did have a little blip and he was

:17:16.:17:24.

down 0-30 on his serve and then he came up with two big shots and

:17:25.:17:28.

cleaned the game up winning four points in a row. For me, Murray in

:17:29.:17:32.

form means when he has those little setbacks, concentration setbacks

:17:33.:17:34.

which everyone does, that he regroups very quickly. That lunch

:17:35.:17:45.

volley. -- lunge volley. Andy was very focused today. We would like to

:17:46.:17:54.

see him come in more. He has great reach and he reads the play well. I

:17:55.:17:58.

don't want to see him at the net, I want to see him on the baseline. He

:17:59.:18:03.

could make people a lot more uncomfortable if he pushed forward

:18:04.:18:07.

as a more. Just positionally getting them. He looks very happy, Bray

:18:08.:18:13.

comfortable, his back is fine now, he looks in good shape. He looks in

:18:14.:18:20.

good nick, as they say here. They do. He now plays Yen-Hsun Lu. He

:18:21.:18:36.

beat him before, what will happen? The bookies will go crazy! They may.

:18:37.:18:44.

The number 22 bus is one Serena Williams is desperate to catch as

:18:45.:18:51.

she chases Steffi Graf's open era run of grand slam titles. There is

:18:52.:18:55.

always an error vulnerability about her but she is always the biggest

:18:56.:18:57.

name in town. The most terrifying thing a player

:18:58.:19:03.

can see opposite their name in a draw is Serena Williams. She is the

:19:04.:19:09.

most dominant player. Facing her today on Centre Court was Amra

:19:10.:19:14.

Sadikova from Switzerland, her first time ever in a grand slam main draw.

:19:15.:19:21.

Williams started well but there were early signs that Amra Sadikova would

:19:22.:19:35.

not be a walkover. Brilliant. Williams has learned that not every

:19:36.:19:40.

performance can be perfect, what matters is the result.

:19:41.:20:01.

Amra Sadikovic played well. Serena Berry said -- berated herself for

:20:02.:20:16.

unforced errors. Each winner was cheered by her mother who had a seat

:20:17.:20:22.

in the Royal box. The match ended with a Hawk-Eye challenge which went

:20:23.:20:27.

the way of Williams. Serena Williams has won her 80th match at Wimbledon!

:20:28.:20:36.

Martina, you watched Serena in action today, what did you think?

:20:37.:20:42.

Lidl in and out. She had three double faults. She did really well

:20:43.:20:52.

when she had three break points. I had not seen her opponent, I had to

:20:53.:20:56.

YouTube heard to see what she looked like. She had a nice game. I never

:20:57.:21:04.

liked playing somebody I had never seen before in a grand slam.

:21:05.:21:06.

Overall, a good performance. Good enough. The score could have been

:21:07.:21:11.

closer in the first set, but in the end, Serena won more points. I spoke

:21:12.:21:15.

to her earlier and I said what could you work on? She said, I started

:21:16.:21:27.

well. I did not think she was happy. The school was a bit misleading. The

:21:28.:21:38.

second set should have been easier. She looked a little bit stressed and

:21:39.:21:44.

a bit tight on her serve. That is normally the best serve ever.

:21:45.:21:51.

Is it just me or has she seemed tight for a year and a half? Every

:21:52.:21:58.

point she was really anxious. At the Australian Open she did not play

:21:59.:22:03.

particularly well in the final. Kerber played great. In the French

:22:04.:22:07.

Open final she was a bit injured. She was asked a lot about that in

:22:08.:22:11.

her press conference and she just batted away and she said, No. She

:22:12.:22:17.

does not want anyone talking about Steffi Graf and 22, she does not

:22:18.:22:22.

what it ancient. She said she was not feeling any pressure, she would

:22:23.:22:29.

not mind talking about it! You cannot escape it. You feel it. You

:22:30.:22:34.

know it is there. Particularly with social media, it is it hard to get

:22:35.:22:38.

away from stuff you don't want to talk about or think about. The press

:22:39.:22:45.

remind you. They say, when are you going to retire? I thought, I have

:22:46.:22:49.

not thought about it until you start talking about it. The thing, am I

:22:50.:22:54.

too old? Implants that seed of doubt. I did not want to know who I

:22:55.:22:58.

played next. I just concentrated on one match. -- it plants that seed of

:22:59.:23:05.

doubt. At the end of the day, she has looked tight when she plays

:23:06.:23:10.

these big matches. She was desperate to talk about other things which I

:23:11.:23:14.

did and she said, thank you for talking about other things!

:23:15.:23:22.

Now, Tara Moore, she is exactly 100 points below her opponent. She grew

:23:23.:23:26.

up in Hong Kong and trend in America. She has lived in the UK

:23:27.:23:32.

since she was 16. She is 23 now. This is her first Grand Slam. It is

:23:33.:23:37.

going with serve. We join it in the first set.

:23:38.:24:01.

Van Uytvanck trying to get a backhand slice over the high part of

:24:02.:24:05.

the net. Nice work. Tara Moore with a really

:24:06.:24:53.

aggressive point. An important point in this game. An interesting

:24:54.:25:03.

spectator, they are trying to peer around the canopy and over the

:25:04.:25:07.

Perspex. They don't make life easy. Come on, mum.

:25:08.:25:19.

Oh, yes, wonderful stuff from Tara Moore. She got two more break

:25:20.:25:27.

points. She had a break point in the previous Van Uytvanck service game

:25:28.:25:31.

and couldn't take advantage of it but this beautiful backhand down the

:25:32.:25:34.

line gives two break points. This is Tara Moore's point here.

:25:35.:26:37.

This is a long way out. It was not too dissimilar to the point on the

:26:38.:26:40.

previous service game. A great rally. Good reactions from

:26:41.:27:01.

Van Uytvanck. She is a sitting duck. Tara Moore moving all over the

:27:02.:27:44.

back-court at the far end. She really reached behind her to

:27:45.:28:25.

pick that one up and as a result, it flew long. Tara Moore, at the third

:28:26.:28:31.

time of asking breaks and she leaves 5-3 and will serve for the first

:28:32.:28:38.

set. STUDIO: And this is her holding

:28:39.:28:40.

serve to take the first set. She was pumped up, she was positive.

:28:41.:28:53.

She said she was inspired by the efforts of Marcus Willis and Dan

:28:54.:28:58.

Evans yesterday. That was part of a run of five consecutive games won by

:28:59.:29:05.

the British wildcard. After an hour and 12 minutes, her first ever

:29:06.:29:08.

Wimbledon victory and a massive screen to celebrate. 6-3, 6-2 was

:29:09.:29:11.

the score. It is amazing. Who would have

:29:12.:29:22.

thought before the grass season that I would be where I am now. I am

:29:23.:29:27.

really grateful to the All-England Club for giving me this opportunity.

:29:28.:29:30.

I think I have definitely worked really hard and it is paying off

:29:31.:29:38.

finally and I am happy. Tara Moore now faces Svetlana Kuznetsova. Now,

:29:39.:29:42.

with the news on the other British players in action, here is Patrick

:29:43.:29:43.

Gearey. Wimbledon has taken better -- this

:29:44.:30:01.

man to his heart. He has never been as well-prepared for Wimbledon.

:30:02.:30:11.

Richard Gasquet is a regular at Wimbledon. One to stand and watch,

:30:12.:30:12.

there is little else he can do. The Bedene did finish the match.

:30:13.:30:46.

Ultimately the difference between Swan and her opponent was apparent.

:30:47.:30:54.

Swan is just 17, so she will hope to be back with Bob Wilson. John

:30:55.:31:01.

McEnroe told us last night that Taylor Fritz would be a top ten

:31:02.:31:05.

player one day. He is only 18 years old. This had potential for an upset

:31:06.:31:14.

if Wawrinka was not bang on form. That is Taylor Fritz and he has no

:31:15.:31:18.

fear at all. Wawrinka took the first two sets. It had to go into a fourth

:31:19.:31:25.

set. Pat, what did you make of Wawrinka when he was at his most

:31:26.:31:35.

powerful? This was a tricky match. Fritz has gone up 600 ranking

:31:36.:31:39.

positions this year. He is the rising star, faster than anybody.

:31:40.:31:46.

The big serving American, a big forehand, a big backhand. Ms

:31:47.:31:52.

12-year-old. Always going to be dangerous. -- he moves well for an

:31:53.:31:57.

18-year-old. He has not really performed his best at Wimbledon and

:31:58.:32:01.

I'm waiting for that to happen. He has all the shots, all the game.

:32:02.:32:07.

This was a real test for him. To get through in four sets, he will be

:32:08.:32:12.

happy. He looked so relieved. He has brought Richard Krajicek into his

:32:13.:32:17.

team to help into the grass court season. I am sure Richard will bring

:32:18.:32:21.

something to the table, but he has the best coach out there already,

:32:22.:32:29.

may be overkill. Someone says something that will make a

:32:30.:32:31.

difference and Richard knows his way around the grass court, but it may

:32:32.:32:34.

be for the mental bit of it more than anything else. Definitely top

:32:35.:32:39.

five, maybe top ten. I used to play against his mother, Taylor is a

:32:40.:32:46.

solid player, he is still a bit gawky, a lanky teenager. Once he

:32:47.:32:51.

fills out, watch out. He has the game and the goods and he seems to

:32:52.:32:57.

want it here. He wants to work hard. It will be on steamed watches

:32:58.:33:00.

progress. Let's move on to a rip roaring match, Nick Kyrgios against

:33:01.:33:06.

Radek Stepanek. Andrew Cotter and Peter Fleming were in the commentary

:33:07.:33:11.

box as we join it with Kyrgios having taken the first two sets and

:33:12.:33:14.

the third set has gone to a tie-break.

:33:15.:33:38.

This makes him such a material player. -- mercurial.

:33:39.:34:30.

The injection of pace from the ground stroke of Kyrgios and he

:34:31.:34:36.

holds his two serves and brings about match point.

:34:37.:35:01.

Oh! That is brilliant from Stepanek. He is down again as he was earlier

:35:02.:35:10.

in the match, but this time with the winning point and at what a moment.

:35:11.:35:16.

Yes, he did not quite get up to the overhead. More like a slip than a

:35:17.:35:20.

dive really. Wide from Stepanek and it will be

:35:21.:36:01.

another match point for Kyrgios and this on his serve.

:36:02.:36:24.

That point was tighter. Thank you Rios has been. -- that point was

:36:25.:37:28.

tighter than Kyrgios has been. He did not want to hit that second

:37:29.:37:39.

serve. Down this end, staring into the sun again.

:37:40.:38:11.

Easily put away by Stepanek, it will be his set point. And his serve.

:38:12.:38:25.

That's time Kyrgios powered down a second serve to no avail. -- that

:38:26.:38:33.

time. The speed gun did not quite pick it up, but it was one of the

:38:34.:38:35.

biggest second serves. Set point. Oh! He has the set. He still lives

:38:36.:39:28.

in this match. Into a fourth set we go and Nick Kyrgios who was serving

:39:29.:39:32.

for the match finds himself in a real fight now. And it was not just

:39:33.:39:41.

Stepanek that Kerry has wanted to fight with, he wanted to fight the

:39:42.:39:50.

umpire. -- that Kyrgios. STUDIO: When he gets angry he channels it

:39:51.:39:55.

well, he served four straight aces, 25 aces in total. He has so much

:39:56.:40:06.

talent and people love to watch him, because you never quite know what

:40:07.:40:10.

will happen. But the main thing he made sure that did happen is that he

:40:11.:40:14.

won. At the press conference afterwards he faced inevitable

:40:15.:40:18.

questions about his on court behaviour. At the start of the match

:40:19.:40:26.

the umpire said mind your language and keep hold of your racket, do you

:40:27.:40:31.

think that is an unfair reputation for you or have you had an umpire do

:40:32.:40:36.

that before? I won't answer that question, next question. Did you

:40:37.:40:42.

follow it up with the umpire? Yes, we are good. Well, not good, but...

:40:43.:40:49.

LAUGHTER INAUDIBLE

:40:50.:40:55.

I don't know, I am pretty sure we have all said it in this room. How

:40:56.:41:01.

do we solve a problem like Nick Kyrgios! LAUGHTER

:41:02.:41:07.

The bottom line is that Nick is Nick. He will blow up, that is his

:41:08.:41:13.

personality, he is unbelievably interesting. A mate of mine said

:41:14.:41:17.

when that Kyrgios kid comes on, I cannot turn the TV off, he is super

:41:18.:41:21.

talented, you never know what will happen and he is a number liveable

:41:22.:41:27.

talent. You rein it in, can you rein it in? Say calm down? Is that a good

:41:28.:41:33.

thing or bad thing. He cannot go around squaring and throwing rackets

:41:34.:41:38.

when there kids, he is trying. It is like Andy Murray, you have to say to

:41:39.:41:46.

him stop being grumpy or emotional. That is not his personality. He is

:41:47.:41:50.

an unbelievably talented player. He produces some shots where you think

:41:51.:41:55.

I would never come up with that. I would never have tried that. That

:41:56.:42:00.

was a stupid shots to try, but it went in, so not that stupid. He has

:42:01.:42:06.

an amazing combination of power, pure, raw power and touch. Kind of

:42:07.:42:11.

like Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he reminds me of him. More upside than Tsonga.

:42:12.:42:15.

I don't think you need to change anything, you don't need to coach

:42:16.:42:19.

him, you just need to challenge it in the right direction. That is what

:42:20.:42:23.

he does a bit too often at this stage. I would say he needs to

:42:24.:42:29.

probably work a little harder, get a double fit. Get a little tougher and

:42:30.:42:36.

he is top ten, top five, grand slam potential no doubt. McEnroe says

:42:37.:42:41.

there are five or six players that can maybe win this title, is he one

:42:42.:42:47.

of them? This year? In the next few years. I do not think he will number

:42:48.:42:55.

one -- he will get number one, you need to be consistent every week.

:42:56.:43:01.

But he could win a big grand slam. Whether he can do that, we will have

:43:02.:43:05.

to wait and see, but he has the potential to do that. To be

:43:06.:43:10.

consistent, you need to be Djokovic, Federer, week in, week out and that

:43:11.:43:16.

is not Nick. He reminds me a bit of Andre Agassi, the rebel, I will do

:43:17.:43:21.

it my way. Andre Agassi became one of the best ambassadors the sport we

:43:22.:43:25.

ever had. You never know how someone will evolve. Here is the really

:43:26.:43:31.

exciting thing, the next round he plays Dustin Brown, he knocked out

:43:32.:43:35.

Rafael Nadal last year. Dustin went to a fifth set and won it against

:43:36.:43:45.

Lajovic of Serbia. He is incredibly exciting to watch. He has a big fan

:43:46.:43:50.

base. That is a match you want to see, isn't it? He is a great

:43:51.:43:55.

ambassador for tennis, friendly, fun. They took him into the IPL

:43:56.:44:03.

league, the league that travels around Asia. He was a big hit, a

:44:04.:44:07.

fantastic person to have, for the kids to watch. Talk about loose.

:44:08.:44:12.

With his racket he slaps the ball around, you do not know what is

:44:13.:44:16.

coming next. He will definitely be great to watch. Joe Konta is the

:44:17.:44:23.

first woman from Britain to be seeded, for quite some time. But she

:44:24.:44:35.

wanted to win against Monica Puig of Argentina. 2016 has been Konta's

:44:36.:44:39.

breakthrough year. The British number one was in a straight and

:44:40.:44:44.

open semifinalist in January, and Eastbourne semifinalist last week

:44:45.:44:46.

and has established herself inside the world's top 20, but there is not

:44:47.:44:54.

much in it. Puerto Rican monitor Puig -- Monica Puig has great form.

:44:55.:45:09.

Simon Reed and Sam Smith were in the commentary box that is. A great

:45:10.:45:11.

start for Konta, already a break up. COMMENTATOR: She is keeping the

:45:12.:45:26.

pressure on. That is OK, right shot and

:45:27.:45:56.

physically on the backhand, Konta will have a go at that. First strike

:45:57.:46:03.

ten is out here, Puig looking for the early winner.

:46:04.:46:18.

APPLAUSE She got a little unlucky, she

:46:19.:46:47.

slipped as she went up to the net. After that she was not really

:46:48.:46:52.

playing the rally on her terms. A little bit of extra luck there from

:46:53.:46:53.

Konta. Explosive return. The coach up there

:46:54.:47:23.

on the left-hand side. Very well read by Konta, so balanced on the

:47:24.:47:24.

return. APPLAUSE

:47:25.:47:35.

She could not have dream it would start as well as this. STUDIO: On

:47:36.:47:40.

tour was nervous, but she certainly did not show it. -- Konta.

:47:41.:47:52.

COMMENTATOR: Very measured, in fact everything she does in her life as

:47:53.:48:03.

well as in tennis is very measured. She does not waste much time. Joanna

:48:04.:48:12.

Konta. -- Johanna Konta. That is the damage

:48:13.:48:42.

that she can pose. She does not have a game with too much variety does

:48:43.:48:49.

Puig. It is one dimension, but she is an excellent ball striker very

:48:50.:48:55.

much in the mould of Jennifer Capriati who she grew up idolising.

:48:56.:49:02.

The serving is really doing the job. APPLAUSE

:49:03.:49:34.

The bouncing off the ball also epitomises Johanna. So precise.

:49:35.:49:42.

APPLAUSE It does not get much better than

:49:43.:49:49.

that, the serving from Konta. STUDIO: Konta was maybe sensing

:49:50.:50:03.

there was rein in the air, she was not hanging around. This was her

:50:04.:50:12.

breaking Puig's set to take it 6-1. It was 2-1 on serve in the second

:50:13.:50:18.

set when the rain fell. Scurrying on came all the ground staff to cover

:50:19.:50:23.

those courts and around about 4:30pm, Konta came off court with no

:50:24.:50:27.

hope of getting back on again, but hopefully not too nervous and night

:50:28.:50:31.

for her, she was playing sensationally well. Today was a big

:50:32.:50:35.

day for French tennis, 11 French tennis players in action. Richard

:50:36.:50:40.

takes a philosophical look at how they got on. John Paul Sartre once

:50:41.:50:51.

said for something to become an adventure, you have to recount it.

:50:52.:50:57.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga proved a force against Cervantes. The Frenchman did

:50:58.:51:05.

what he does best... COMMENTATOR: Big man, light touch. He won in

:51:06.:51:10.

straight sets to set up a round to rendezvous with a man named Monaco.

:51:35.:51:48.

very had his own take on how the Frenchman played. Goodbye to Matthew

:51:49.:51:56.

-- Mathieu. Meanwhile, this was a tricky tie

:51:57.:52:13.

against Troicki. The 25th seeded Serb proved the creme de la creme.

:52:14.:52:23.

He was victorious. The 26th seed Paire had to wait for his tennis. He

:52:24.:52:29.

took five sets to see off the Croatian winning 10-8 in the final

:52:30.:52:33.

set. Not every French player finished their match, some did not

:52:34.:52:37.

make it onto court which leads me to another famous French saying, when

:52:38.:52:48.

it rains, it pours. STUDIO: Like that, I did not know he knew so many

:52:49.:52:53.

words in French. Dell portrayal has not played a grand slam match for

:52:54.:53:02.

almost 900 days. -- Del Potro. He is a guy we need on the circuit to be

:53:03.:53:06.

perfectly honest. He won the US Open, he has the ball as powerful as

:53:07.:53:12.

anybody on the circuit. We would love to see him back. There are a

:53:13.:53:15.

few players we miss. He is definitely one of the guys we would

:53:16.:53:21.

like to see back. He now plays Stan Wawrinka, another tough time for

:53:22.:53:26.

Wawrinka. A view of the women's seeds did go through, let's round

:53:27.:53:35.

them up with Paddy. Kuznetsova and Wozniacki knew whatever happened in

:53:36.:53:37.

round one, the weather would not stop them. Wozniacki was once world

:53:38.:53:46.

number one, now she is at 45, unseeded and undone by her Russian

:53:47.:53:51.

opponent, the 13th seed. Worrying for Wozniacki who would fall outside

:53:52.:53:57.

the top 50 with defeat. Kuznetsova, a three-time quarterfinalist here

:53:58.:54:02.

was simply too good. A straight sets win and it seems she has already

:54:03.:54:08.

found her rhythm. A top ten seeding has come late to Roberta Vinci and

:54:09.:54:22.

she played an American risk -- Riske. What a response from Riske.

:54:23.:54:32.

The world number 80 took the second. A test of nerve and skilful Binchy.

:54:33.:54:37.

She passed bows. How far might this sort of touch take-up. On Court

:54:44.:54:46.

Dominic Thiem, he was up against Florian Mayer and he is marked by

:54:47.:54:53.

many as one to watch. Unfortunately there was not much chance to watch

:54:54.:54:57.

him, all play on the outside courts was suspended due to rain. Time to

:54:58.:55:04.

run for cover. STUDIO: Have to be patient the players, once they

:55:05.:55:08.

finish the matches, they have to go through press conferences. -- they

:55:09.:55:13.

have to be patient. Caroline Wozniacki was asked about off court

:55:14.:55:18.

matters as she often is as well. I just focus on myself and if I read

:55:19.:55:22.

everything that was written about me in the last 15 years, by now I would

:55:23.:55:26.

probably have jumped over a cliff. I would rather not. She has two handle

:55:27.:55:33.

it, Martina, it is tough for all of the players. It is as much about the

:55:34.:55:37.

mental strength on the court as on it. I did not like to read anything

:55:38.:55:43.

about myself. That's seed of doubt get in there and it can grow into

:55:44.:55:47.

something big. These days with the social media it is so hard to get

:55:48.:55:52.

away from it. If I were on Twitter as a player, I would not be reading,

:55:53.:55:56.

you would just post, you cannot read the stuff, it just gets nasty, there

:55:57.:56:01.

is no need to go there. There is enough to deal with on an everyday

:56:02.:56:05.

basis, getting the ball where you want to hit it without thinking this

:56:06.:56:10.

one said that all that. I do not blame her, it is difficult. The one

:56:11.:56:15.

negative comment stays with you longer than 100 positive things. Now

:56:16.:56:20.

the shot of the day, it belongs to Nick Kyrgios. There could have been

:56:21.:56:24.

many we picked from his match and some moments of sensational tennis,

:56:25.:56:28.

but this had a bit of Kyrgios cheekiness as well as the scale.

:56:29.:56:33.

That through the legs lob that landed on the line. I think that is

:56:34.:56:37.

a worthy winner. It is worth the price of admission. What a great

:56:38.:56:45.

match. These two are my favourite players to watch. Stepanek with his

:56:46.:56:49.

touch and his serve and volley in. Nick used to do this stuff all the

:56:50.:56:57.

time. -- volleys. It has stayed with him. He has been clowning around

:56:58.:57:03.

with his mates on the court. It may not suit everybody, but... He was

:57:04.:57:09.

trying to hit a lob. He has that much control, the leg is in the way.

:57:10.:57:15.

His legs are so long, you could not do it with short legs. Let's look at

:57:16.:57:20.

the order of play for tomorrow. Some sensational matches, the highlights

:57:21.:57:23.

being Roger Federer up against Marcus Willis of Great Britain.

:57:24.:57:40.

It will be good to see Dimitrov again. Heather Watson did not get to

:57:41.:57:51.

start her first round match. She will be up tomorrow. In terms of

:57:52.:57:55.

dealing with the weather, the forecast tomorrow is terrible. What

:57:56.:58:01.

do you do, as a player that is second or third on, how do you

:58:02.:58:04.

prepare? It is easier for the players later in the day, they get

:58:05.:58:10.

called off. It is the first on who get on edge. I could not... It is

:58:11.:58:19.

about managing your emotions and your stomach. Everyone is in the

:58:20.:58:25.

same boat. At least we have a roof on centre. They have to go on Centre

:58:26.:58:35.

Court. There are no outdoor courts to warm up on. Out they go. Across

:58:36.:58:41.

Somerset Road into the indoor courts and they warm up and they are ready

:58:42.:58:44.

to go. Thank you for your comments and your company. Pat Cash and

:58:45.:58:51.

Martina Navratilova. And to all at you for watching. Stan Wawrinka

:58:52.:58:55.

showed Taylor Fritz who is boss and we saw Britain's Tara Moore winning

:58:56.:59:04.

her first grand slam match. She is into the second match. Joanna
