Welcome to Wilmslow. It's full of athletes taking part in the 7th

:00:28.:00:32.

triathlon. For this round we have travelled here to Cheshire to look

:00:32.:00:38.

at the growth of the sport at grass roots level.

:00:38.:00:41.

This summer there will be an average of six triathlons taking

:00:41.:00:48.

place every weekend across the country. In 2012 there was a total

:00:48.:00:52.

of 856 triathlon events in the UK and that number is set to grow this

:00:52.:00:57.

year. Since 2004, British trialt London membership has grown from

:00:57.:01:02.

6,500 to more than 15,000 and the range of people taking part is

:01:02.:01:06.

becoming more and more diverse. In Wilmslow today we have

:01:06.:01:10.

participants who take the sport so seriously they'll be aiming to get

:01:10.:01:15.

enough points to compete in the age group races at the ITU grand final

:01:15.:01:18.

in Hyde Park in September. On the same course we will also see people

:01:18.:01:22.

of all shapes and sizes with little or no triathlon experience, all

:01:22.:01:26.

here with the aim of reaching their own individual goals. Later in the

:01:26.:01:29.

programme we will be speaking to a couple of today's competitors,

:01:29.:01:33.

asking them how taking up up triathlon has changed their lives

:01:33.:01:36.

and we will be letting you know what to do if you fancy a go, as

:01:36.:01:41.

well. For now, let's turn our attentions

:01:41.:01:46.

back to the sport's elite level and more specifically, round three of

:01:46.:01:51.

the series which has been taking place this this weekend in the

:01:51.:01:57.

Japanese city of Yokohama. We are going to start focusing on the

:01:57.:02:07.
:02:07.:02:19.

men's race. The leaderboard looks from Richard Murray, who was second

:02:19.:02:24.

in San Diego and is currently 7th in the rankings. Perhaps the man he'll

:02:24.:02:28.

fear more in Gomez. A late entry fear more in Gomez. A late entry

:02:28.:02:38.
:02:38.:02:43.

his storming victory in his series debut placed him sixth in the

:02:43.:02:49.

rankings. Alistair chose to stay in California and compete in a 10 K

:02:49.:02:56.

track race. Having clocked an impressive 23.32 he is back on

:02:56.:03:04.

British soil explaining why he The last four years for mee were all

about that one race in London. Fair enough. You only get one chance to

:03:07.:03:11.

raise at the Olympics. But to keep going for another four year, the

:03:11.:03:20.

same would be pretty tough. To mixing up with 10 K and other races

:03:20.:03:27.

and hoping to keep it fresh. It was great doing a 10K. With the

:03:27.:03:31.

triathlon, you pack your bags, you have three drinks bottles, three

:03:31.:03:35.

pairs of shoes, different clothing. It was the best thing just to throw

:03:35.:03:40.

your spikes and a vest in the bag and go down the track. I obviously

:03:40.:03:44.

talked about trying to qualify for the common wealths. I don't know how

:03:44.:03:48.

possible it is. I'm enjoying it and using it as a different goal to

:03:48.:03:51.

train for and running as fast as I can.

:03:51.:03:56.

It would be good but I wouldn't see him for very long.

:03:56.:04:01.

While all that has been going on, Johnny Brownlee has been continuing

:04:01.:04:06.

his training getting ready for his delayed start to the season. He has

:04:06.:04:10.

fully recovered from the Aingle injuries that blighted his

:04:10.:04:15.

winter training. -- ankle injuries. With Alistair winning he is hoping

:04:15.:04:20.

to make it back-to-back Brownlee wins.

:04:20.:04:23.

Let's see how they are getting on with their training.

:04:23.:04:31.

The men are getting ready to race at Yokohama. A grey and damp day in

:04:31.:04:36.

Japan's second largest city. You can see some of the taller buildings

:04:36.:04:42.

obscured by the clouds. So it should make for an interesting race. This

:04:43.:04:46.

is the story so far in terms of where they've been. It was Auckland

:04:46.:04:50.

where it ended last season, where they began this season. Soon desay

-- San Dei go. We are now in Yokohama. They begin the bike leg to

:05:07.:05:17.
:05:17.:05:18.

complete 40 kilometres. They'll ride 94. .45K laps, taking them to

:05:18.:05:22.

various key areas of the Yokohama water front. Back into transition

:05:22.:05:30.

for the changeover, then we'll have four 2. 5K laps on foot to complete

:05:30.:05:36.

the race. That's how it'll end, back in transition in about an hour and

:05:36.:05:41.

50 minutes from where they start. So it is the defending Yokohama

:05:41.:05:44.

triathlon champion who wears number one as the leader in the rankings.

:06:05.:06:09.

David McNamee wears nine for Great Britain. The big news is the return

:06:09.:06:15.

of Jonathan browly following his ankle injury -- Jonathan Brownlee.

:06:15.:06:20.

He hasn't competed since the end of last season. He wears 19. There he

:06:20.:06:26.

is the Olympic bronze medallist. It was Alistair's turn to shine is San

water. A spectacular start. Two laps. Oh, somebody has taken a knock

across the port of Yokohama. The water temperature enforcing the use

:07:11.:07:16.

of wetsuits at 17. 3 degrees. A chilly, rather unwelcoming weather

:07:16.:07:24.

situation here in Yokohama, but a huge day for the sport as we see the

:07:24.:07:27.

return of Jonathan Brownlee. Difficult conditions.

:07:27.:07:31.

Well, they certainly are. They are very different to what they saw here

:07:31.:07:35.

last year. In around about September time the water temperature was up in

:07:36.:07:39.

the 20s. Certainly the outside temperature was a lot warmer. The

:07:39.:07:43.

roads are going to be wet and slippery. We have seen the swim. It

:07:43.:07:50.

is a wetsuit swim. That changes the race a little bit. It benefits the

:07:50.:07:56.

slightly slower swumers. Not that any of these guys are slow. A few

:07:56.:08:03.

missing. Richard Varger who we normally see isn't there. We'll see

:08:03.:08:09.

the Russians leading the race, I think. Igor Polyanskiy and of course

:08:09.:08:14.

Gomez and let's not forget Johnny Brownlee as you said earlier was

:08:14.:08:19.

said to be in the shape of his life by his brother, Alistair. There is

:08:19.:08:26.

the Olympic bronze medallist and defending WTS champion. The younger

:08:26.:08:31.

of the Brownlee brothers, Jonathan. He had that in incredible brobs

medal in -- bronze medal in Hyde Park on August 7th 2012, despite

:08:36.:08:42.

being forced to stop and take a 15-second count because of a

:08:42.:08:47.

dismount infringement. We never saw a replay of that, in fact. It was a

:08:47.:08:51.

little controversial. I remember Alistair and Jonathan, as we see the

:08:51.:08:54.

start again, Alistair and Jonathan discussing, or trying to discuss

:08:54.:08:58.

what happened as they were on the bike but the noise levels from the

:08:58.:09:03.

crowd were so great they couldn't hear each other speaking, such was

:09:03.:09:10.

the interaction with the huge crowds the interaction with the huge crowds

:09:11.:09:13.

in Hyde Park last August. A good start for Johnny Brownlee off the

:09:13.:09:23.

pontoon. This is the first turn with Ivan Vasiliev and Jonathan Brownlee

:09:23.:09:27.

in hot pursuit. -- Denis Vasiliev. There was an arm on a shoulder there

:09:28.:09:35.

with ducking and diving going on. Eight minutes and five seconds have

:09:35.:09:45.
:09:45.:09:48.

passed. The lead remains with the Russian, Denis Vasiliev. His brother

:09:48.:09:53.

wouldn't be too far behind. They have to head for this ramp which is

:09:53.:09:58.

semi-submerged in the water off Yokohama. Crawl out, then run along

:09:58.:10:02.

the platform and dive back in. We'll get a full check on the standings at

:10:02.:10:06.

the end of lap one. It is Vasiliev first out of the water. Followed by

:10:06.:10:14.

Johnny Brownlee. Then his brother Ivan. Henri Schoeman is fourth.

:11:24.:11:29.

Vasiliev. Followed by Johnny Brownlee, who I think is joined by

:11:29.:11:36.

the other of the Vasiliev brothers, Ivan. They are in close proximity to

:11:36.:11:39.

Jonathan Brownlee. Again more trouble for some of the insiders as

:11:39.:11:44.

they come tight on this turn. The bikes are poised and ready to

:11:44.:11:51.

go. There is Johnny Brownlee's bike with feeding stations stuck to the

:11:51.:11:55.

handlebars and crossbar and the rain falling steadily now on the water as

:11:55.:12:01.

the swimmers approach the final turn before they head to the pontoon for

:12:01.:12:10.

the second exit. This time they'll the second exit. This time they'll

:12:11.:12:14.

head for their bikes. It's been an excellent swim from the Canadian

:12:15.:12:18.

Andrew McCartney. He made an excellent exit and reentry after the

:12:18.:12:23.

first lap. He found himself in first position. He has held on to first

:12:23.:12:28.

position, keeping Denis Vasiliev down in second. Good swimming

:12:28.:12:32.

technique for McCartney. He will be first to the sloping pontoon which

:12:32.:12:35.

takes him out of the water. He will start it prepare ready for

:12:35.:12:40.

transition. He is on his way. McCartney first, Vasiliev in second.

:13:33.:13:39.

go into this transition area. Johnny Brownlee has arrived. Fiddles with

:13:39.:13:44.

that. Make sure the clip is done up and wetsuit deposited into the box.

:13:44.:13:49.

First man out was the first man in. McCartney leaves first. Johnny

:13:49.:13:53.

Brownlee is there, crosses the line before he gets on his bike and away

:13:53.:13:59.

they go to begin the first of nine 4.45 kilometre laps on the wet roads

:13:59.:14:04.

of Yokohama. It's going to be dangerous. It'll require full

:14:05.:14:09.

concentration. Everybody needs to keep their distance to avoid any

:14:09.:14:13.

incidents but we are likely to see them in such slippery road

:14:13.:14:16.

conditions. Mark Buckingham is on conditions. Mark Buckingham is on

:14:16.:14:18.

his way. Number 12 just going his way. Number 12 just going

:14:18.:14:22.

his way. Number 12 just going through. Igor Polyanskiy. And those

:14:22.:14:27.

who are just arriving, including Richard Murray, will be eager to

:14:27.:14:30.

exit quickly and keep in touch with this lead group. Murray glances up.

:14:30.:14:36.

He has a bit of work to do to catch the leaders. The second group is

:14:36.:14:40.

immediately forming behind him are just seeing Adam Bowden go

:14:40.:14:44.

through there. I think he had a bit of a bad transition. He really was

:14:44.:14:47.

just behind the front guys coming across the water. Another good swim

:14:47.:14:52.

from him following up from a good swim in San Diego but seems to have

:14:52.:14:56.

dropped off the pack. That's why it is important to come out and hammer

:14:56.:15:02.

the first kilometre. That's why the guys do. This is the front pack of

:15:02.:15:06.

riders coming through. You can see the damage that can be done early on

:15:06.:15:10.

in the race when someone is committed, the likes of Jonathan

:15:10.:15:15.

Brown lane Alistair Brownlee, they know how important it is to run out

:15:15.:15:18.

hard. People try to make the mistake of recovering from the swi. Go with

:15:18.:15:28.
:15:28.:15:45.

that. You have to go with the pace in these conditions. One lap down.

:15:46.:15:51.

Eight laps to go. Adam Bowden is 22 seconds off the

:15:51.:16:01.
:16:01.:16:17.

the field from Jonathan Brownlee. Look at him go. He wants to up the

:16:17.:16:25.

ante. Everybody else is forced to respond.

:16:25.:16:29.

Johnny is used to six months of training, he is coming to this with

:16:29.:16:34.

less training and come to this race late. He arrived two days before

:16:34.:16:42.

the event. And that's a different tactic to normally. There is a

:16:42.:16:46.

theory come in late or early. But at the moment doesn't seem to be

:16:46.:16:51.

affecting him, the fact he arrived in the country 48 hours ago.

:16:51.:16:55.

Adam Bowden, number four, right of screen. He takes it up with the

:16:55.:17:00.

chase group. The chase group I think think has

:17:00.:17:07.

now absorbed the two Russians boys. Instead of pushing to join leaders,

:17:07.:17:10.

they allowed themselves to be swallowed up by the chase group

:17:10.:17:20.
:17:20.:17:25.

which now numbers six or seven. Oh! We have a man down. It's

:17:25.:17:28.

Polyanskiy. Took out one of the court Marshalls in the process. He

:17:28.:17:36.

is hurting. I think it was a relatively slow part of the course

:17:36.:17:40.

where Polyanskiy went down. He was making a turn. The paramedics are

:17:40.:17:45.

there to take care of him. No change at the front. Still eight

:17:45.:17:55.
:17:55.:18:07.

guys. McCartney looks to be finding course. His left arm clearly

:18:07.:18:10.

damaged in some way. I don't know if it's superficial or whether he

:18:11.:18:16.

needs an X-ray. But his race is run. Javier Gomez takes his turn to

:18:16.:18:20.

force the pace and leads them through at the end of lap four.

:18:20.:18:25.

Five to go. There's the helicopter. I think it's probably remotely

:18:25.:18:28.

controlled from the ground. It's not big enough to carry a pilot and

:18:28.:18:34.

that gear underneath. The chase group aren't getting any closer.

:18:34.:18:39.

They're down to about 50 seconds behind the hraoetders now --

:18:39.:18:44.

leaders now. This is group number three coming

:18:44.:18:52.

through. Richard Murray in there.

:18:52.:19:02.
:19:02.:19:07.

A minute and a half off the pace, Murray. Harris, as well. Silva

:19:07.:19:12.

hoping to extend lead today. He needs to watch Gomez, the

:19:12.:19:21.

mathematics of that to be decided. Gomez moves to the front. McCartney,

:19:21.:19:26.

where he's been since he left the water.

:19:26.:19:32.

8th position. Barely moved from 8th. A couple of minutes in 7th but he

:19:32.:19:38.

has been out the pack, the Canadian. White helmet of Jonathan Brownlee.

:19:38.:19:47.

At the end of lap 7, two to go. One minute and 18 seconds between the

:19:47.:19:53.

front group of eight and the chasers.

:19:53.:19:56.

The crowd still out in force, despite the rotten weather

:19:57.:20:02.

conditions. They were hoping for some Japanese success. That

:20:02.:20:12.

vanished long ago, the chance of a home win today. Gomez is there.

:20:12.:20:17.

Brownlee easy to spot. They'll take the bell here. It's at the end of

:20:17.:20:27.
:20:27.:20:28.

lap 8. The bell will sound, signalling one further lap to ride.

:20:28.:20:32.

Next time they come to transition they'll dump the bikes and start

:20:32.:20:38.

the run. One to go. Jonathan Brownlee's return to top

:20:38.:20:43.

level competition has been exemplary, so far. Will it be a

:20:43.:20:46.

triumphant return to top level racing for the younger of the

:20:46.:20:56.
:20:56.:20:57.

Brownlee brothers? It was a triumphant return for Alistair in

:20:57.:21:03.

San Diego. Jonathan will have to deal with Gomez, with the threat of

:21:03.:21:08.

Silva. Certainly knowing that Alistair won in San Diego, I think

:21:08.:21:12.

that's going to motivate him to think, if my brother can do it, I

:21:12.:21:18.

can do it, as well. The transition fast approaching. They've so much

:21:18.:21:21.

space between the leaders and the chase group. There's no danger of

:21:21.:21:31.
:21:31.:21:37.

being caught. Preparations for the dismount in line now. Van Der Stel

:21:37.:21:41.

leads them in with Brownlee in second. Approaching the dismount

:21:41.:21:47.

line. They're spread out nicely across the road here in Yokohama.

:21:47.:21:53.

Touch down. Away we go. Brownlee moves seamlessly from

:21:53.:21:59.

riding to jogging into position to transition. Right shoe is on, left

:21:59.:22:07.

shoe is on. Gomez is set, as well. It's Shaw

:22:07.:22:17.
:22:17.:22:20.

who leads them out. Silva, Gomez, Brownlee, McCartney Schoeman. They

:22:20.:22:23.

leave pretty much as a single group, that was well executed by all of

:22:23.:22:33.
:22:33.:22:45.

them. What do they do here? Does Johnny take it out hard and go, I

:22:45.:22:49.

am here. And put the fear of God in them or does he sit in and see what

:22:49.:22:53.

they've got to offer him? second group have arrived at

:22:53.:23:01.

transition. Wilson first in and first out.

:23:02.:23:11.
:23:12.:23:12.

That's a quick change by Wilson. Bailie and Good. Tayama the best of

:23:12.:23:20.

the Japanese. Out in front Brownlee with Gomez on his shoulder. Silva

:23:20.:23:27.

splashing through the puddles, holding on to third position.

:23:27.:23:32.

Shaw and Schoeman with no answer to the speed at the start of this

:23:32.:23:38.

first lap. An hour and 22 minutes so far for Jonathan at the end of

:23:38.:23:48.
:23:48.:24:05.

the first lap.. One of the Japanese competitors still on his first lap.

:24:05.:24:10.

Johnny's kicked away from Gomez. He has opened up a gap of two or three

:24:10.:24:16.

metres. Around the hairpin, a wide turn

:24:16.:24:20.

from Brownlee. Further pace injected. The gap now a couple of

:24:20.:24:26.

seconds. I had a feeling Gomez was going with Brownlee for the first

:24:26.:24:29.

couple of kilometres and he was thinking, he will slow down. He

:24:29.:24:32.

can't keep this pace up. At three kilometres, he thought I can't stay

:24:32.:24:38.

with this pace and this guy isn't slowing down. Brownlee looks

:24:38.:24:47.

comfortable. Silva stays in third. Vasiliev has broken away and

:24:47.:24:55.

fancies a visit to the WTS podium. Silva's third place may be in

:24:55.:25:05.

danger. Now the gap has grown. Closer to five seconds between

:25:05.:25:15.
:25:15.:25:15.

Brownlee and Gomez. They complete lap two of four. Silva looks like

:25:15.:25:23.

he is in real pain. Seven minutes and 11 seconds for

:25:23.:25:33.
:25:33.:25:56.

last year's run time by Silva, which was 29.42. At the end of lap

:25:56.:26:02.

three Jonathan Brownlee is in command in Yokohama, just like his

brother was in San Diego. The rain is getting heavier. He's

:26:09.:26:13.

been using the feeding station water to cool himself down. But

:26:13.:26:17.

mother nature will help him now over the final lap. Not looking as

:26:17.:26:22.

comfortable as he was ten minutes ago. But his lead over Gomez is

:26:22.:26:31.

significant. In the wet, murky distance, we can see Silva in third

:26:31.:26:40.

position. 12 seconds between Brownlee and Gomez. Two-and-a-half

:26:40.:26:47.

kilometres to go. Brownlee's taken the bell. Gomez takes it now.

:26:47.:26:56.

Shortly Silva will take it. Vasiliev I don't think has enough

:26:56.:27:02.

in the legs to close the gap and take third position. Holding on for

:27:02.:27:12.
:27:12.:27:15.

4th, for the moment. 51 seconds between Jonathan in first and Silva

:27:15.:27:25.
:27:25.:27:43.

behind, and now it's 15. Schoeman in 5th or 6th here, will get a full

:27:43.:27:48.

list of what they're doing. He is in 5th, followed by McCartney,

:27:48.:27:57.

who's holding on to 6th position. Shaw and Richard Murray is the man

:27:57.:28:00.

who's made up some ground. He was with the chasing group. He was a

:28:00.:28:06.

long way off the pace. He really hasn't let up, we thought he had

:28:06.:28:10.

gone out with that pace and was he going to blow up or slow down? But

:28:10.:28:20.
:28:20.:28:21.

my eyes are telling me that this is pretty much the same pace as he

:28:21.:28:24.

went out with. I am going to be fascinated to see the run splits at

:28:25.:28:28.

the end of this race. This is going to be somewhere up with the similar

:28:28.:28:30.

times to what his brother is running right now. With plenty of

:28:30.:28:33.

races still to come he could still go on and successfully defend his

:28:33.:28:38.

WTS title, which he won in 2012. There's plenty of time for Jonathan

:28:38.:28:43.

to do that and on this sort of form who can stop him? Maybe only his

:28:43.:28:53.
:28:53.:28:57.

brother. Jonathan Brownlee has demolished the field here in

:28:57.:29:04.

Yokohama, off the back of an injury. His first race of the season. His

:29:04.:29:14.

first Olympic distance triathlon of 2013 will end in triumph in

:29:14.:29:21.

Yokohama. No one to touch him here in Japan. In the driving rain, at

:29:21.:29:29.

last he can afford a smile. His fitness is not in doubt. Despite

:29:29.:29:39.

the lay-off with injury, he is in a class of his own here. On to the

:29:39.:29:45.

final strait now. It's Jonathan's turn to shine in

:29:45.:29:53.

Yokohama, following Alistair's demonstration in San Diego. Up the

:29:53.:30:00.

final stretch to take the applause and congratulations. What a win!

:30:00.:30:06.

The younger of the Brownlee brothers, Jonathan triumphant in

:30:06.:30:16.
:30:16.:30:16.

Japan. He made it look so ridiculously easy. He will have a

:30:16.:30:25.

wait now as Gomez comes home. He will be about 20 seconds behind.

:30:25.:30:31.

Brownlee has beaten Gomez, that's a huge achievement for him. And last

year's winner has improved on his winning time from a year ago, as

:30:35.:30:45.
:30:45.:30:51.

excellent venue for Joao Silva. Twice a winner. And third today in

:31:12.:31:16.

how far up the field Richard Murray finds himself. He will be next to

finish, into fifth. Two South Africans. Schoeman overtaken in the

Brownlees are coming. I have only trained for two weeks at

:32:24.:32:28.

running. At the start of the year I got told I wouldn't be racing at

:32:28.:32:33.

all. I got a bit emotional. I thought I wasn't going to be here at

:32:33.:32:37.

all. I thought the season was over and now to be back, it is weird. I

:32:37.:32:41.

don't know where it came from but I felt pretty good. One of the big

:32:41.:32:46.

things is I've trained hard. Long miles were being young. So I have a

base. If you have a rest it helps. That helped me. Javier has been

travelling around the world. I have been at home in Yorkshire. I have an

advantage that I'm a lot fresher T helped me. It was good it breakaway

on the bike. I'm happy with my performance today, better than in

:33:05.:33:09.

San Diego. Not great but Jonathan was fast in the run. I tried to hang

:33:09.:33:15.

on in the first lap. I blew up. Second place is all right.

:33:15.:33:18.

beginning of the season for me has been a lot of travelling and maybe

some of, that I don't noe. I'm really happy with the result, with

the third and to come here was great because all the people are cheered a

:33:29.:33:36.

lot for me, so I'm really thankful lot for me, so I'm really thankful

What an incredible start it the season for Johnny. There is no doubt

:33:41.:33:45.

that the success he and his brother have had over the years has

would train about four times a week Thai boxing over in Leeds and we

both run. Then we thought - why not mix it up and go for a triathlon. It

:38:07.:38:13.

third stage of the WTS for 2013. Here we G a spectacular start. --

:38:13.:38:21.

here we go. It is a cold morning. A fast start for the 22 elite

:38:21.:38:27.

triathletes as they dive into the choppy waters of the port of

:38:27.:38:31.

Yokohama Those waters look choppy to me. We saw the girls warming up

:38:31.:38:35.

earlier. Not the best conditions. Sometimes the TV can be deceptive.

:38:35.:38:40.

It looks relatively flat. But when you are in there, it is not going to

:38:40.:38:46.

feel so flat. Just under a kilometre swim, deep in the first of the two

:38:46.:38:50.

laps here. That second grou, that second trio -- that second group,

:38:50.:38:54.

that second trio are making contact with just about every stroke. They

:38:55.:38:59.

could do with giving each other a bit of room. Otherwise somebody's

:38:59.:39:04.

googles will come off or somebody could get poked in the eye.

:39:04.:39:09.

Eventually someone getting sandwiched out of context as Aileen

:39:09.:39:13.

Reid continues to set the pace for the Republic of Ireland here Just

:39:13.:39:17.

noticing there that little break and in the second pack behind I did see

:39:17.:39:21.

Maaike Caelers. She's not known for her swim, is she? She has been

:39:21.:39:26.

working on it all winter. We know her biking and running is amazing.

:39:26.:39:34.

Her swim needs work. In the last couple of races she's had Anne Haug.

:39:34.:39:40.

But she isn't there today. current leader in the WTS rankings,

:39:40.:39:50.
:39:50.:40:00.

gone, we'll get a look the everybody's position hopefully if

:40:01.:40:06.

the machine is working properly as they come out of the water. It's

:40:06.:40:09.

Sato and Aileen Reid and Emma Moffatt and Jodie Stimpson in

:40:19.:40:38.

Moffatt and Jodie Stimpson in the swim session in Yokohama.

:40:38.:40:44.

So it is Adachi who leads them through. She's go the clean water in

:40:44.:40:49.

front -- she's got clean water in front. She goes left now, around the

:40:49.:40:53.

first of the white inflatables. It is a little less frantic at this

:40:53.:40:59.

turn. Oh, somebody, number two, Gwen Jorgensen seemed to get a slap in

:40:59.:41:04.

the face as she came around that turn. One or two are getting barged

:41:04.:41:08.

out of position as W it is a little chaotic. Oh, somebody has gone

:41:08.:41:14.

under. Goodness me. Somebody got a ducking, that was Annamaria Mazzetti

:41:15.:41:24.
:41:25.:41:37.

from Italy, who was ducked with both is enough daylight between the

:41:37.:41:42.

swimmer in position number 12 or so and the next two allow two groups to

:41:42.:41:46.

form. I saw possibly four packs forming there and that's definitely

:41:46.:41:51.

Moffatt there in second place. We would expect to see her there abouts

:41:51.:41:56.

at the front of the swim. I think you are right, four packs is

:41:56.:42:00.

definitely possible here. It looks like we'll have eight or nine in the

:42:00.:42:04.

front group. Someone has gone slightly off course and is going to

:42:04.:42:09.

have to adjust, so they go the right have to adjust, so they go the right

:42:09.:42:13.

side of that orange buoy. Mariko Adachi is our leader. Emma Moffatt

:42:13.:42:16.

is in hot pursuit. Adachi is stretching the lead further. She

:42:16.:42:21.

wants to enjoy this moment and lead the way for the TV cameras and the

:42:21.:42:25.

photographers and the Japanese supporters alike. She will be

:42:25.:42:33.

exiting the water after just under 19 minutes. Here we go. Out of the

:42:33.:42:39.

water. Mariko Adachi, followed by Emma Moffatt. She was second out. In

:42:39.:42:43.

third place, well that may well still be Aileen Reid unless she got

:42:43.:42:46.

still be Aileen Reid unless she got pushed further down. No it is Yuka

:42:46.:42:51.

Sato followed by Jodie Stimpson, the Sato followed by Jodie Stimpson, the

:42:51.:43:01.
:43:01.:43:11.

are well-stretched. 20 seconds between one to nine. 33 seconds

:43:11.:43:16.

between Adachi in first and Kate McIlroy who came out of the water in

:43:16.:43:20.

tenth. Adachi is looking like she's in

:43:20.:43:25.

excellent shape here. She's spotted her bike. The wetsuit is half off.

:43:25.:43:29.

She'll step out of it. This is all well-reversed now. She has to get

:43:29.:43:34.

this bit right. As has Emma Moffatt. The bits have to go in the right

:43:34.:43:40.

boxes. The helmet has to go on. Running shoes are attached to the

:43:40.:43:44.

pedals on the bike. They call it the fourth discipline in triathlon, the

:43:44.:43:49.

transition. Adachi was first in. She is first out of transition.

:43:49.:43:55.

Caelers is down in 14th. She has work to do. 44 seconds off the pace.

:43:55.:44:04.

work to do. 44 seconds off the pace. There is Idowu. -- Ide.

:44:04.:44:08.

Stimpson is working hard and there is a group of sixth who will hope to

:44:08.:44:13.

join in the fun at the front of the field as well Yes, it is just a

:44:13.:44:16.

shame because obviously Moffatt can't see what was going on behind

:44:16.:44:20.

her. But if she knew there were two girls behind her they could link

:44:20.:44:28.

together and work well to get away from that chasing back.

:44:28.:44:32.

And Moffatt is about to have some company in this front group. It'll

:44:32.:44:42.
:44:42.:44:50.

Yuri Ide, the current number one ranked athlete certainly here today

:44:50.:44:55.

anyway. And her tenth place in San Diego and third in the World Cup

:44:55.:44:59.

earlier on in the year. So she has earlier on in the year. So she has

:44:59.:45:09.
:45:09.:45:20.

opportunity for some of the up and coming athletes to have a go and

:45:20.:45:25.

get themselves prepared for the World Series racing, the level is

:45:25.:45:28.

so high now. To go straight to that from junior level would be very

:45:28.:45:36.

tough. 27 minutes and ten seconds. The riders come to complete the

:45:36.:45:43.

first of the nine laps around Yokohama. It's a small field but

:45:43.:45:48.

this is actually quite a big group. 13 athletes to hit this course.

:45:48.:45:52.

There's 20 turns in every lap. Riding in a big group certainly

:45:52.:45:57.

makes it tougher going in and out of those turns. We have seen an

:45:57.:46:07.
:46:07.:46:17.

athlete go down. Oh!Looked like... Yeah, Maaike Caelers, she may well

:46:17.:46:20.

carry on. But she's going to be struggling. She seemed to be

:46:20.:46:30.
:46:30.:46:31.

reaching down to adjust her shoe. Toppled over. Hit Roberts. Caelers

:46:31.:46:35.

hit the tarmac hard. Bravely, she is back on her bike and continuing

:46:35.:46:38.

on her way. I wonder how long she will last?

:46:38.:46:43.

I wonder what tactics the girls are going to play here. Jorgensen is in

:46:43.:46:45.

the pack. Jorgensen doesn't really have to do any work. She needs to

:46:45.:46:50.

sit there and wait for the run with the kind of running she's doing at

:46:50.:46:53.

the moment. But up there at the front some of the girls might be be

:46:53.:46:57.

thinking let's see if we can pull away and the time is when you come

:46:57.:47:06.

out of a tight bend and attack. There's the gap.

:47:06.:47:11.

Brave performance. What courage from Caelers of the Netherlands.

:47:11.:47:16.

The Japanese supporters are showing their appreciation for her. They

:47:16.:47:22.

can see she's damaged. Look at her right knee, both knees, in fact.

:47:22.:47:30.

Scarred and red raw. They end lap three with six to go. This is a

:47:30.:47:33.

really, really tough bike course. There isn't really any point where

:47:33.:47:37.

the athletes can get into their rhythm. They're constantly up and

:47:37.:47:41.

down, going around bends, in and out of the saddle. This is one of

:47:41.:47:45.

the toughest courses you can have, I think. They'll find big hills

:47:45.:47:49.

easier than this, it's a course that breaks a rhythm. Here's the

:47:49.:47:59.
:47:59.:48:11.

second group. It's taken on board The chase group represented by that

:48:11.:48:16.

blue dot. Coming towards the end of lap five.

:48:16.:48:26.
:48:26.:48:37.

They're more than halfway through the honours at the end of the 5th

:48:37.:48:47.
:48:47.:48:48.

lap. About an hour and a bit to go in this WTS elite women's race. At

:48:48.:48:54.

this stage, on recent form, you would think that this bodes well

:48:54.:49:02.

for Gwen Jorgensen. We have another collision, it involves one of the

:49:02.:49:07.

Australians and one of the Japanese riders. Here we go. Oh, that was a

:49:07.:49:17.

big hit! Two of them down. A traffic jam behind then. One or two

:49:17.:49:24.

putting their brakes on. We will try and keep you posted as to any

:49:24.:49:34.
:49:34.:49:35.

news from that. The good news is that Katie Hewison was not involved

:49:35.:49:41.

and this time Caelers stayed out of trouble. It's getting wet, they'll

:49:41.:49:46.

be thankful they've got through the backbone of this bike ride. Now on

:49:46.:49:50.

the 7th lap of nine. The rain held off and they've been able to

:49:50.:49:56.

complete the majority of the 40K ride on dry tarmac. Things will be

:49:56.:50:02.

tricky for the last two-and-a-half laps. Still the same 12. Including

:50:02.:50:06.

Jodie Stimpson of Great Britain who's done plenty of work at the

:50:06.:50:15.

front of the field during the 35 or so kilometres they've ridden so far.

:50:15.:50:21.

It's becoming driving rain now. I think I just saw a flash of

:50:21.:50:31.
:50:31.:50:40.

lightning, just to make things approach the end of lap 8. We can

:50:40.:50:46.

just see now the second pack, and that 30 seconds now is definitely

:50:46.:50:52.

down to around about 20 seconds with Caelers on the front again,

:50:52.:50:55.

working hard. It's going to be fantastic to see her coming to

:50:55.:50:58.

transition with the front pack. She deserves it after what she's been

:50:58.:51:07.

through in this race. kilometres to go. We do now have

:51:07.:51:12.

one big group at the front of the field. The chasers have caught the

:51:12.:51:18.

leaders. It means that Caelers is back in touch. I am really excited

:51:18.:51:26.

to see this run, to see Caelers and Jorgensen go head-to-head and Emma

Moffatt in the mix and Jodie Stimpson, according to her coach,

:51:31.:51:36.

is on fire at the moment. They're going to hit transition and going

:51:36.:51:40.

to be wet and cold and looking forward to going out to the run and

:51:40.:51:49.

getting heat into their body. final stages of the 40k bike and

:51:49.:51:53.

preparations are well under way for the arrival at transition. Bare

:51:53.:52:00.

feet on top of shoes for many of the riders now. They get set to

:52:00.:52:06.

complete the bike course. Remarkably, Caelers has made her

:52:06.:52:10.

way back into contention and will arrive in about 10th position to

:52:10.:52:17.

transition, following that horrible crash early in the bike stage. In

:52:17.:52:23.

they come. Kate McIlroy is first off the bike heading towards her

:52:23.:52:30.

zone in transition. McIlroy is there. Stimpson arrives third.

:52:30.:52:40.
:52:40.:52:55.

they leave as one big group to begin the first lap of four on two

feet. A 10k run to round things off. Emma Moffatt of Australia, Stimpson

:53:10.:53:19.

of Great Britain. First and second. Actually Gentle leading them

:53:19.:53:25.

through. There is Jorgensen looking threatening again. She barges past

:53:25.:53:33.

Caelers. Can Jorgensen possibly inflict similar damage on Emma

:53:33.:53:43.
:53:43.:53:48.

have been from - was that Darren Smith? It sounded like Darren

:53:48.:53:54.

Smith's voice. Use the motorbike was the shout from - we think it

:53:54.:54:01.

was Darren Smith. There's a shortening gap to the athlete in

:54:01.:54:10.

third place, and it's Gwen Jorgensen. We have seen this before.

:54:10.:54:14.

In San Diego Moffatt was out in front and Jorgensen hunted her down

:54:15.:54:20.

ruthlessly. She's striking again. Cruising here in Yokohama,

:54:20.:54:23.

Jorgensen. Looking back down the road, at the moment barring

:54:24.:54:27.

disaster, this race - the podium is here with these three women.

:54:27.:54:31.

Absolutely. You know what, it's three seconds now and counting.

:54:31.:54:38.

It's two seconds. She's about to join them. Jorgensen kicks a little

:54:38.:54:48.

extra speed into her run. It's deja vu for Emma Moffatt. In San dithe

:54:48.:54:52.

podium was Jorgensen of the USA. Stanford of Great Britain and

:54:52.:54:58.

Moffatt of Australia. Looks like it will be the three same nations here

:54:59.:55:08.

in Yokohama but with Jodie Stimpson raising the British flag this time.

:55:08.:55:15.

Three down, twoupb go. -- one to go in the 10k run. Two, four and six.

:55:15.:55:24.

Jorgensen, Moffatt and Stimpson. me Jodie looking really, really

:55:24.:55:31.

relaxed and great to see her looking so confident. Jorgensen

:55:31.:55:41.
:55:41.:55:41.

leads them through. Stimpson staying with her. Moffatt is

:55:41.:55:47.

starting to rock and roll slightly in her body shape, not looking as

:55:47.:55:51.

at ease as she was ten minutes ago. But she's keeping the pace going,

:55:51.:55:56.

so far. A steelly look towards the bell from Gwen Jorgensen as she

:55:56.:56:02.

kicks away from Stimpson and Moffatt. Gentle is in fourth

:56:02.:56:09.

position and running nicely with the incredible Caelers, who fell on

:56:09.:56:13.

the bike, back in 5th. But it's Jorgensen's race for the winning

:56:13.:56:22.

again. She's moved clear. Not only will the win be hers in Yokohama,

:56:22.:56:28.

but the lead in the WTS rankings for 2013. She will move ahead of

:56:28.:56:32.

Anne Haug to a very solid position at the top of the rankings. She's

:56:32.:56:39.

done the hard work. She's timed it perfectly once again. 18 seconds is

:56:40.:56:47.

the lead now. Moffatt and stitch son are fighting -- Stimpson are

:56:47.:56:51.

fighting it out for second position. An outstanding performance once

:56:51.:56:59.

again from Gwen Jorgensen. Perfect timing. Brilliant tactics. An

:56:59.:57:07.

incredible level of composure and she will take victory in Yokohama,

:57:07.:57:12.

as she did in San Diego. Taking out Emma Moffatt in the process on the

:57:12.:57:18.

final lap, as she did in San Diego. The battle goes on for second. But

:57:18.:57:23.

there's absolutely no doubt about the winner. Gwen Jorgensen can ease

:57:23.:57:28.

it up now on the final strait as Stimpson and Moffatt continue to

:57:28.:57:35.

chase it out for second. The gap was 18 seconds last time we looked.

:57:35.:57:42.

On to the blue carpet, into the transition for the final time comes

:57:42.:57:45.

Gwen Jorgensen, not only to take the win but also to take the lead

:57:45.:57:52.

in the WTS standings for 2013. A fabulous display from the American.

:57:52.:57:57.

Moved her way up through the field on the run, cruised up towards the

:57:57.:58:02.

leaders and then when she felt the time was right kicked away from

:58:02.:58:09.

them. It's going to be a fast time, as well. Around one hour and 57

:58:09.:58:16.

minutes. She accepts the support from the crowds at the side of the

:58:16.:58:22.

course. She won in the blazing heat of San Diego. She will win again in

:58:22.:58:30.

the wet and cold of Yokohama. Just over an hour and 57 for Gwen

:58:30.:58:35.

Jorgensen. The battle is on for second! It's between Moffatt and

:58:35.:58:39.

Stimpson. Moffatt and Stimpson, it's going to be tight! It's very

:58:39.:58:45.

tight. It's Moffatt who gets it, by one second with a smile on her face.

:58:45.:58:53.

Stimpson pushed down to third. A grimace on her face. It's Gentle

:58:53.:59:00.

who holds on to fourth position. Remember that Caelers fell object

:59:00.:59:07.

to -- on to the tarmac in the early stages but she's courageously

:59:07.:59:15.

picked herself up and finished in 5th position in Yokohama. The final

:59:15.:59:21.

results of the women's competition and another win for Gwen Jorgensen.

:59:21.:59:26.

14 seconds clear of Emma Moffatt with Jodie Stimpson in third. An

:59:26.:59:33.

excellent result also for Great Britain's Katie Hewison who

:59:33.:59:43.
:59:43.:59:50.

podium once. Today you looked under control. I wouldn't say totally

:59:51.:59:58.

under control, but yeah. Didn't look like you were panicking

:59:58.:00:01.

through the first couple of kilometres and you continued to eat

:00:01.:00:05.

into that lead, that's got to be a strategy that's working for you.

:00:05.:00:09.

am glad it looked like I wasn't panicking. Those girls were running

:00:09.:00:15.

fast the first two laps. I tried to focus on the basics in the race.

:00:15.:00:20.

That first lap a little bit of a breakaway. Can all -- with all the

:00:20.:00:25.

turns it's not as fast. I wasn't able to get a breakaway.

:00:25.:00:29.

My first podium, I am thrilled. Couldn't be happier. Being from the

:00:29.:00:32.

UK, every domestic race is in the rain mostly, so it definitely

:00:32.:00:37.

played to my strengths and it was more so about being calm and

:00:37.:00:41.

staying upright. With Jodie getting her best ever

:00:41.:00:45.

result it's been another successful weekend for British triathlon and

:00:45.:00:48.

it's great to see many of you racing here in Wilmslow. Don't

:00:48.:00:52.

forget many of those taking part here today will be back in action

:00:52.:00:58.

in September with the creme de la creme of the World At the age group

:00:58.:01:03.

World Championships at the grand final in Hyde Park. For us, like

:01:03.:01:06.

both the Brownlee brothers, we will be back in action at the next stop

:01:06.:01:12.

in the World Triathlon Series in Madrid on 1st and 2nd June. You can
