Hello a very good evening to you and
welcome back to the Barbican Centre | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
in York. Its quarter finals night of
the 2017 Betway UK Championship, and | 0:00:36 | 0:00:44
to dight, one of the's troubled
winners take on an underdog who | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
knows all about snooker's long and
winding road. I don't need to win to | 0:00:49 | 0:00:55
pay a bill. I can just play and, if
you scrape me off the table, if I | 0:00:55 | 0:01:02
get beaten, it ain't because I was
under pressure, it's just because I | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
wasn't good enough on the day. I'm a
couple of shots, here or there, from | 0:01:05 | 0:01:15
playing really clinical, one visit
snooker. If I can that, I could be | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
dangerous. -- if I can sort that, I
could be dangerous. Victory in the | 0:01:18 | 0:01:28
Northern Irish open last season has
changed Mark King. He now knows how | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
to win, he knows he can do it, and
that makes him a completely | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
different animal, as far as snooker
goes. We've all known for a long | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
time he was a potential winner, now
he is a winner. Obviously, winning | 0:01:40 | 0:01:45
northern Ireland was a kick-start
after so many years of trying. You | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
can't comprehend how much it meant
after so many years of trying and | 0:01:48 | 0:01:55
thinking, you know, it's never going
to happen. And finally doing it. You | 0:01:55 | 0:02:01
couldn't write it. It was absolutely
fantastic. I don't think you can go | 0:02:01 | 0:02:07
into these matches with a
preconceived idea. You go out, play | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
the game as you see it, it would be
a shot anyone if come out and | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
attack. I've been doing it so long.
You just have to hope you make less | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
mistakes than the other guy. If I
can make if you less unforced errors | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
than he does, I've got half a
chance. Tonight, and all England | 0:02:23 | 0:02:29
clash as world mother six Shaun
Murphy, of the 20 18th UK title, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
taking on John King, who knocked out
market gains in the last round. And | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Wales's Ryan Day, ranked 19, taking
on Mark Joyce, who saw off Neil | 0:02:38 | 0:02:45
Robertson in the fourth round, one
of the shots of what has been a | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
fascinating UK Championship. I'm
delighted to say Alan McManus is | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
alongside us. Those shocks, will
they continue tonight, do you think? | 0:02:52 | 0:02:58
I think there is a very good chance
of. Shaun Murphy is in good form but | 0:02:58 | 0:03:03
he'll have to cut out the little
mistakes he made in the last round. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
Mark King in the last year is a
completely different proposition | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
than he has been probably throughout
his whole career. He works hard, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
he's dedicated. He is a real
competitor, he showed that fighting | 0:03:14 | 0:03:22
spirit against Higgins. Absolutely,
and I don't think that the Mark King | 0:03:22 | 0:03:27
of five or ten years ago could have
won that much. I think that is how | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
fastly his game has come on.
Mentally, I think he's improved as | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
well, which is important. In his
post-match interviews, he was | 0:03:34 | 0:03:41
brilliant. Let's look at this
afternoon's results. Ronnie | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
O'Sullivan beat Martin Gould. Same
scoreline, Stephen Maguire against | 0:03:43 | 0:03:51
Joe Perry, so they meet in
tomorrow's semifinal, and you can | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
watch that on the BBC, live from
York. Ronnie O'Sullivan, pretty | 0:03:53 | 0:03:59
comfortable after the scare last
night. It was a good performance. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:05
Early on, Martin Gould gave him too
many free chances, and you can't do | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
that with him. His general form is
good. Steve Davis said yesterday he | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
is probably the only guy in the
field who will win... And Stephen | 0:04:13 | 0:04:21
Maguire, there is something about
him. I think he's got the eye of the | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
tiger about him. He's been watching
other guys lifting some trophies in | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
the last year or so and I think he's
pretty envious and he wants to be in | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
amongst it. That'll be a fascinating
match. Let's take a quick look at | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
the head-to-heads it 8-1 in terms of
matches but surely you can't read | 0:04:39 | 0:04:47
anything into this tonight, given
that against Higgins it was 18-3 in | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Higgins's Weber. Mark King will not
have that in his head. He will not | 0:04:51 | 0:04:57
even know about that score. It's all
on tonight, and Mark King, always | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
remember he is a different player
and he was in the past. When we | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
spoke to Shaun Murphy yesterday, I
asked him whether the top seeds that | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
are left in the drawer have any
fear, given that we've lost so many | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
of them. Will that play on his mind?
Not at all, the top seeds take care | 0:05:14 | 0:05:22
of their own business, they don't
even look at the draw. They just | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
think, why my playing next, who am I
playing, that's my game, I'll | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
concentrate on that. I think that
Shaun Murphy is getting the ball as | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
well as he has ever done and he just
asked to cut out some mistakes, but | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
Mark King will make it difficult for
him. -- he just has to cut out. Good | 0:05:38 | 0:05:45
evening, ladies and gentlemen, it's
Friday night, we are in York and | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
this is the second session of
quarterfinal action in this year's | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
Betway UK Championship. Another
rocking night of entertainment is | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
guaranteed, here at the Barbican.
CHEERING | 0:05:58 | 0:06:04
Please welcome a player enjoying the
best season of his career so far. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
This is his third quarterfinal of
the current campaign and his first | 0:06:16 | 0:06:24
in the UK Championship since 2010.
In one of the biggest matches of his | 0:06:24 | 0:06:29
life, bidding for his first
appearance in a ranking event | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
semifinal, there comes Mark Joyce! | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
And his opponent, coming through two
tense decider against Li Hang and | 0:06:43 | 0:06:52
his compatriot, Mark Williams, to
make his first appearance in a UK | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
court of final, winner of the
Masters at the start of this season, | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
it's Ryan Dynamite Day. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:06
On table one, a player returning to
the UK quarterfinals for the first | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
time in 13 years after that superb
victory over John Higgins, coming | 0:07:22 | 0:07:29
from 4-2 down. Northern Ireland open
winner in dramatic fashion last | 0:07:29 | 0:07:34
year, snooker's modern day tally
Savalas. Who loves you, baby bastion | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
mark mark Kojak -- who loves you,
baby? Mark Kojak King. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:52
And, yes, it's cherry flavoured,
just as he requested, and his | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
opponent, a class act on and off the
baize, bidding for a seventh UK | 0:08:05 | 0:08:11
semifinal, fine form this season,
he's been in three finals, and he | 0:08:11 | 0:08:16
became champion of champions last
month. He is a world, UK and Masters | 0:08:16 | 0:08:22
winner, it's Shaun the Magician
Murphy. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:30
We are with you live on BBC Two
until 8pm, and then we switched to | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
the red button. If you want Ryan Day
against Mark Joyce on table two in | 0:08:40 | 0:08:45
the company of Peter Ebdon and
Dennis Taylor, that is available on | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
the BT Sport website, but live on
BBC Two, will be talking you through | 0:08:48 | 0:08:56
Shaun Murphy and Mark King. -- that
is available on the BBC sport | 0:08:56 | 0:09:01
website. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
is available on the BBC sport
website. We are down to the | 0:09:03 | 0:09:04
nitty-gritty in this championship,
and this should be a fascinating | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
encounter. Mark King should all his
grit and determination last round to | 0:09:06 | 0:09:13
get past John Higgins, and he is up
against one of the finest men with | 0:09:13 | 0:09:18
the cue ever in Shaun Murphy. I'm
looking forward to this match, a | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
great introduction for both players.
The Telly Savalas of the snooker | 0:09:21 | 0:09:34
world and even requesting own
flavour of lollipop. Cherry flavour, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
that's what he wanted, and he's got
it. Great character. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:45
Lovely way to start a match. We
mentioned his lovely cue action, and | 0:09:49 | 0:09:57
there's an example, laser straight.
Alan was speaking about with Jason, | 0:09:57 | 0:10:03
and it's just about those little
unenforced errors. Generally, not | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
even when he's in trouble for stop
just a little glitch now and then. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:13
We are being critical because he is
a tournament winner, but he'd win a | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
lot more if he didn't have it. It's
just a concentration block. Every | 0:10:17 | 0:10:26
time he gets to about 40 or 50, he
has one uncharacteristic shot, just | 0:10:26 | 0:10:35
a lack of concentration. When he's
fully focused, so hard to beat. It's | 0:10:35 | 0:10:42
hard to hide the cue ball,
particularly with that laser cue | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
action on those long pots.
Straightaway, he is and around the | 0:10:47 | 0:10:58
black spot. Yeah, his ball striking
is superb. He is an authority on it. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:07
He is a great authority when he hits
it. Positivity. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
We mentioned it the other day, he
gets that Murphy stopped when he is | 0:11:21 | 0:11:27
walking round confident. He is very
confident around the table, he | 0:11:27 | 0:11:32
bounces round it. -- Pat Murphy
storm -- that Murphy stomp. He is | 0:11:32 | 0:11:45
very quick as well. He is on this
red night and straight and he can | 0:11:45 | 0:11:52
try and leave himself low on the
black, and that is why he has come | 0:11:52 | 0:11:57
round to have a look. A nice angle
on the black, so he can possibly go | 0:11:57 | 0:12:02
into the pack. Plenty of loose reds
available. Let's see what he wants | 0:12:02 | 0:12:11
to do. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13 | |
There is just one of those little
shops, John. OK, it's not a miss. -- | 0:12:17 | 0:12:23
little shops. But a slight lack of
concentration. Needed to hit back | 0:12:23 | 0:12:31
red, but just missed to leave the
red into the opposite pocket. He | 0:12:31 | 0:12:37
missed the red and now it end of
break. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
He'll be kicking himself for that
cannon, and likewise there. I know | 0:12:51 | 0:12:57
this is being harsh, but that cue
ball should have been to the bottom | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
cushion. Simple little shot. Should
have had them lined up with the | 0:13:00 | 0:13:06
yellow. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
Well, another chance to play a long
red. Yeah, and Mark King's safety | 0:13:23 | 0:13:33
has been top quality this week. But
that wasn't one of his best. Maybe | 0:13:33 | 0:13:39
expecting that Shaun Murphy will
knock this one in. At this level, | 0:13:39 | 0:13:46
those type of shots are bread and
butter for Shaun Murphy and of his | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
ilk. One of the reasons he is so
good at that is that he lets the cue | 0:13:49 | 0:13:57
do the work. Next time we play,
watch how far the cue gets back. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:07
People are getting shorter and
shorter cue action as well. I'm not | 0:14:07 | 0:14:12
the biggest fan of that. Shaun is
like Higgins, he lets the cue do the | 0:14:12 | 0:14:19
work. That's why he generates so
much work and power, because the cue | 0:14:19 | 0:14:25
is doing the work. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
He's got a lovely paused on the back
swing as well. Before he strikes the | 0:14:36 | 0:14:42
ball, a pause and a release.
Beautiful timing. Budding snooker | 0:14:42 | 0:14:48
players, because is there because,
once the cue comes back in, he | 0:14:48 | 0:14:54
transfers his eyes onto the object
ball. As he comes back, there is a | 0:14:54 | 0:15:02
pause, his eyes will go on to the
object ball, which in this case is | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
the black. And in the pocket. When
you are playing, the ball you are | 0:15:05 | 0:15:11
looking at is the object ball. This
is not a start that mark King would | 0:15:11 | 0:15:22
have liked. For Mark King to win
this frame, I think he's going to | 0:15:22 | 0:15:27
scrap it out. He plays a really good
safety game, good, solid, all-round | 0:15:27 | 0:15:32
matchplay type of snooker. He
doesn't want quick frames like this. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:45
This is just the start that Shaun
Murphy would have wanted. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
60 ahead, so red and black, 68 ahead
with 67 remaining. This frame is | 0:16:00 | 0:16:07
over in a matter of minutes. You can
see from his demeanour how well he's | 0:16:07 | 0:16:13
getting it. Walking around very
confidently, and holding that cue in | 0:16:13 | 0:16:21
a beautiful manner. A bit offside on
this one, and just played the | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
straight screw back for the red in
the middle. Just needs to make sure | 0:16:25 | 0:16:32
he knocks this one in. Yeah, that
will be the end of the frame. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
Wonderful start, two very good long
reds. OK, lost position after the | 0:16:37 | 0:16:46
first one, but it's great for the
confidence when you are knocking | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
those in. And he is also showing his
opponent that means business this | 0:16:49 | 0:16:54
evening. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
He just hates it so good, absolutely
sweet, that contact, strike, | 0:17:29 | 0:17:35
everything in the middle of the
pocket. -- he just hits it so good. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:40
That's why, when he has these
glitches, we are so surprised. He | 0:17:40 | 0:17:50
knows himself, if he cuts those out,
he has a very chance of winning | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
here. And I agree, he will do. A
wonderful break of 71. | 0:17:53 | 0:18:04
Mark King is coming back to the
table for a little bit of potting | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
practice. But the damage is already
done. Good start from Shaun Murphy. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:19
Mark King misses the black and says,
that's enough. So Mark King concedes | 0:18:19 | 0:18:25
the frame, and Shaun Murphy wins the
first frame, leading mark King 1-0. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:35
Shaun Murphy picking up where he
left off, beating Ricky Walden | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
yesterday. A quick start. Yet, as he
slips into his technique so smooth | 0:18:38 | 0:18:44
and quickly. Look at this long red,
Mark King dropped a few balls short | 0:18:44 | 0:18:50
on the baulk line, and Shaun doesn't
allow those mistakes. Against a | 0:18:50 | 0:18:57
lesser player, you could get away
with it. Such a good technician in | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
the box. He really can get on top of
you and take the game away from you | 0:19:00 | 0:19:08
quickly, so Mark King will have to
get in there. He made the point | 0:19:08 | 0:19:13
yesterday in his interview, where he
was talking about the little | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
mistakes he made yesterday, and he
knows this, he gave himself a seven, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
pushing and eight, if he gets rid of
those, he is a real contender this | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
year. There was a positional shot
that went astray. If he cut that | 0:19:24 | 0:19:32
out, he could win anything.
Absolutely, a good start by Shaun | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
Murphy. Back to the commentators.
Mark King comes to the table. Good | 0:19:34 | 0:19:43
break off, Shaun Murphy. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
Mark King, a couple of safety shots,
he left those long pots, and | 0:19:54 | 0:19:59
normally his safety is pretty good,
but it's going to be at its best | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
hide that cue ball. That break-up
was so good he can only just drop | 0:20:03 | 0:20:09
the pack. He can't play the up and
down because the red on the black | 0:20:09 | 0:20:15
spot would be available. That was
all he had. The safety play against | 0:20:15 | 0:20:23
John Higgins, he went 4-2 down, and
if that had been eight or ten years | 0:20:23 | 0:20:30
ago, he wouldn't come back, but he
is a different player now. His | 0:20:30 | 0:20:36
safety is determination, his
confidence, winning in the Northern | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
Ireland open, that has given him
some extra belief. And so far in | 0:20:39 | 0:20:44
this tournament, seeing some of the
games he's played, his scoring got | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
better, but that would have it
arrived the other day across his cue | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
ball wasn't the best, and he
couldn't get half ball on the black. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
I spoke to him after and, every time
he finished on the black, he | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
finished straight, which limits what
you can do with the cue ball. He'll | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
be hoping he scores better when he
gets chances tonight. The longer the | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
tournament goes on and the better
players you play, the more you've | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
got to score. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
This red is available for Mark King.
OK, the black isn't on to the | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
opposite corner pocket, but he could
certainly get enough top spin on his | 0:21:45 | 0:21:50
cue ball to try and get back up for
the blue. If he knocks the cue ball | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
up the right-hand side, he won't be
leaving anything, only possibly the | 0:21:53 | 0:21:58
red he's taking. It's almost a shot
to nothing. I've noticed in the last | 0:21:58 | 0:22:05
couple of these days that these have
been tough. A lot of people knocking | 0:22:05 | 0:22:10
the front jaw, so there's no way
they are going in. It looks easy on | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
the screen, it's a fairway off the
push on. You've got paid respect. -- | 0:22:13 | 0:22:18
it's a fair way off the caution.
You've got paid it respect. Can't | 0:22:18 | 0:22:31
say I'm surprised by that. Playing
tough. For some reason, I decided to | 0:22:31 | 0:22:38
have in our practice and they were
definitely very nippy down the | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
rails. Must have been cobwebs on
your cue! It took me half an hour to | 0:22:40 | 0:22:50
wipe them off. But the tables were
beautiful and the cloth was | 0:22:50 | 0:22:56
gorgeous, but they need maximum
respect down the condition. Catching | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
the jaw wasn't going in. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
A few times, he's left the cue ball
well short of the cushion. It | 0:23:09 | 0:23:19
doesn't put any pressure on Mark
King for his safety. Really, that | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
cue ball should have been tight to
the baulk cushion. In very small | 0:23:22 | 0:23:37
margins. Sometimes, these small
margins are the difference between | 0:23:37 | 0:23:44
winning frames and losing frames and
even winning matches and losing | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
matches. Sometimes it sounds like we
are being ultra-critical. But I can | 0:23:47 | 0:23:54
guarantee you Mark King wouldn't
have got that if he'd been playing | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
Mark Selby, because that cue ball
would have been stuck to the bottom | 0:23:56 | 0:24:01
cushion. It tends to be, for Shaun,
when he's not in any trouble. It's | 0:24:01 | 0:24:06
as if he doesn't pay it respect
because he doesn't think it's | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
important, but it's important as
everything. Get that cue ball, on | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
top of the fact that you can play
and plain ball a bit more, and you | 0:24:13 | 0:24:22
could win more tournaments. First
chance for Mark King in amongst the | 0:24:22 | 0:24:35
balls. He's got to state his intent.
It's not straightforward to go into | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
the pack of reds. There are a few
obstacles. The red just above the | 0:24:39 | 0:24:44
pink is an obstacle. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
He may not even elect to go into the
pack here. You'll see Mark King's | 0:24:50 | 0:25:00
stance when he comes back to play
best shot. Different to other | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
people, both legs bent. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
I think he can get through the gap.
A thin click on this red. It's not | 0:25:16 | 0:25:22
what he played on. It wasn't a great
pack to go into a but could just get | 0:25:22 | 0:25:29
top of the blue. -- could just get
topside of the blue. These jaws | 0:25:29 | 0:25:39
again. They definitely need respect,
and it's good news and bad news, | 0:25:39 | 0:25:45
really. The good news is that the
red is gone tight on the top rail. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:52
But he's no at the table. But this
is tricky. -- he's no longer at the | 0:25:52 | 0:25:58
table. Shaun isn't fancying it, so
it's a safety. But he's got to make | 0:25:58 | 0:26:06
sure that cue ball stays down near
the yellow pocket. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
It baffles me why he didn't take
that red that was closer to the | 0:26:24 | 0:26:29
bottom corner pocket. Lots of
right-hand side. Spin the cue ball | 0:26:29 | 0:26:33
back into baulk. Another chance for
Mark King. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:38
Nervy start for Mark King. He's had
a couple of chances now. Of course, | 0:26:45 | 0:26:54
missing that in the way he did and
leaving the cue ball on the other | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
side of the table, this is a
possibility for Shaun to play this. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
He'll play this with a bit of
right-hand side, try and get a bit | 0:27:01 | 0:27:06
of cushion and ball together, and
the right-hand side acts like a bit | 0:27:06 | 0:27:11
of a kicker. Good second prize
though. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:20
Good shot, well sorted out. And that
red down the right-hand side cushion | 0:28:05 | 0:28:16
Shaun was looking at is a problem.
He'd ideally like to play off the | 0:28:16 | 0:28:22
right-hand red, but that's blocking
the path of the red on the | 0:28:22 | 0:28:27
right-hand side, or it could be if
he gets this thick. The three in the | 0:28:27 | 0:28:35
line by the pink spot, the
right-hand one, he's got to hit it | 0:28:35 | 0:28:39
very thin. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
So, instead of thinking about that,
look how good that was. Three | 0:28:51 | 0:28:58
absolute crackers. If he can't come
up with a safety shot... If you can | 0:28:58 | 0:29:07
pot your way out of trouble, you
might as well do it. Mark King would | 0:29:07 | 0:29:13
have been very happy with himself
after that last safety shot. He | 0:29:13 | 0:29:20
wasn't expecting that. That's a good
pot as well. I mean, that is just | 0:29:20 | 0:29:31
exquisite cueing. I mean, he
couldn't really hold it to try and | 0:29:31 | 0:29:36
get on the red at the back, but the
last two shots, if you want to know | 0:29:36 | 0:29:42
what a good functioning cue action
is, you've just seen it. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:46
Seemed like two brilliant shots for
only eight points. Well, this is the | 0:29:54 | 0:30:09
line that he would love to take to
leave that cue ball somewhere behind | 0:30:09 | 0:30:15
the yellow and brown. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:16
That's the problem, if you miss the
green, you are OK, but if you hit | 0:30:26 | 0:30:31
the green, you leave another red. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:35
The way he has been knocking those
in, I thought it was going well, but | 0:30:50 | 0:30:59
Sean must've done his long game so
far. He's not settle down yet, Mark | 0:30:59 | 0:31:07
King. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:08 | |
Looks easy on your screen, but it's
not. It's very thin. I am wondering | 0:31:33 | 0:31:41
whether he can just stun this, but
he doesn't want the register -- the | 0:31:41 | 0:31:53
red to come back and cannon one of
the baulk colours. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:58
Nice to see both players having a
little laugh and a joke. There is a | 0:32:19 | 0:32:24
lot of tension, a lot at stake in
this match. Good shot. But nice to | 0:32:24 | 0:32:32
see the players having a little
laugh amongst themselves. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:35
He is going to play the tuck up
here, behind the yellow, nice and | 0:32:39 | 0:32:47
tight. Oh, Mark. What a job that
was. He can't believe that one | 0:32:47 | 0:32:55
himself. That was a shocker. | 0:32:55 | 0:33:01
Again, the target behind the yellow
and brown here. He's just got to be | 0:33:49 | 0:33:53
careful he doesn't knock the red
over the corner pocket. Oh, middle | 0:33:53 | 0:33:58
pocket. He didn't hit that way he
intended. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:04
Hasn't left anything into the right
corner, but Sean Murphy is so good | 0:34:08 | 0:34:13
with the rest. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:15
And I'm not such a good commentator!
You've got to be, as Yaha, surprised | 0:34:23 | 0:34:34
by that, because he is normally very
good. But no, not to be. So, another | 0:34:34 | 0:34:43
chance for Mark King. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:47
Got to score off this one, you would
think. This is an ideal situation | 0:34:51 | 0:35:00
for Mark King here. He has got to
get on at least the red, my choice | 0:35:00 | 0:35:07
would be the red to this bottom
corner pocket, but if he gets on the | 0:35:07 | 0:35:10
one that is closest to the bottom
left-hand corner pocket, it frees up | 0:35:10 | 0:35:15
the black to both corner pocket is. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
If he can get on this red here, he
has got a nice angle to drop on it | 0:35:20 | 0:35:28
from the side cushion. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:30
I'm with you, I don't know whether
he looked at that or he could have | 0:35:38 | 0:35:42
forced an angle out of it. That is
the one you would want to get rid of | 0:35:42 | 0:35:49
first. I think he was quite
fortunate that he was on that red, | 0:35:49 | 0:35:57
because he found the gap. He can get
on this red now, pot black and try | 0:35:57 | 0:36:04
to get that red. A good chance then.
That shot there, I may have been | 0:36:04 | 0:36:17
tempted to play a little cannon,
Justice group -- just a screw | 0:36:17 | 0:36:26
cannon. Going to play this a little
softer, to hold the white. He | 0:36:26 | 0:36:37
wouldn't have had to worry about
that shot if he had played the other | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
cannon, but we all see it
differently. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:42
The white is free for the black, but
it's OK. It just goes into the | 0:36:50 | 0:37:00
right-hand side of the pocket. This
is where Mark King is quite good, | 0:37:00 | 0:37:06
when the balls are in the open and
he's just got to play a series of | 0:37:06 | 0:37:11
stuns, little cannons on reds in the
black and pink area. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:21
That's OK. Not wholly convinced, is
he? The black warbled in the jaws | 0:37:27 | 0:37:36
and went in, he is still on the
table, that is the main thing, but | 0:37:36 | 0:37:40
you just want to see him get one of
those little cannons correctly. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:46
You don't expect him to outscore
Sean Murphy. That would reflect in | 0:37:52 | 0:37:58
their career centuries, a bit of a
difference there, but what he is | 0:37:58 | 0:38:07
good at is making 60, 70 breaks,
enough to leave his opponent needing | 0:38:07 | 0:38:27
snookers it makes your life so much
easier when you get the cannons | 0:38:27 | 0:38:31
correct. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:33
He has looked a little bit nervous
in the opening exchanges. Sean | 0:38:44 | 0:38:49
hasn't pressed home his advantage.
This break will settle him down. If | 0:38:49 | 0:38:56
you can win the frame from this
position, John. He is in two mines | 0:38:56 | 0:39:03
here on what to do. He has got a
natural shot, he could stun up for | 0:39:03 | 0:39:09
the blue, you don't have to play an
pink in the middle. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:12
Yes, but if you are going up for the
blue, Mark, make sure you get past | 0:39:16 | 0:39:24
it. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:25 | |
Not a great time to lose the cue
ball, 52 ahead, this will leave it | 0:39:32 | 0:39:37
57, with 59 on. That was the one
time you didn't want to play a bad | 0:39:37 | 0:39:48
shot. I don't think he can avoid the
blue. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:53 | |
He just needs one more red. | 0:39:53 | 0:40:01
That's more like it. He got there in
the end, didn't he? Made it hard | 0:40:15 | 0:40:24
work for himself, but this time,
make sure you get nice and tight in | 0:40:24 | 0:40:28
behind, Mark. | 0:40:28 | 0:40:29
So, an excellent contribution from
Mark King, a little struggle in | 0:40:35 | 0:40:40
places, but nevertheless, a good
break, 53. He should take the second | 0:40:40 | 0:40:45
frame. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:45
I don't think Sean will be coming
back to the table whatever happens, | 0:41:18 | 0:41:22
you wouldn't think. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:23
And Sean Murphy nods his head,
that's enough for him. Well done | 0:41:34 | 0:41:41
Mark King, that was just what the
doctor ordered, and he levels the | 0:41:41 | 0:41:44
match at one frame all. | 0:41:44 | 0:41:46
There is another match taking place
this evening, Ryan Day a Mark Joyce, | 0:41:50 | 0:41:54
and Ryan has already won the league
of Masters this season. He has made | 0:41:54 | 0:41:59
a good start in his first session,
and coverage of that match continues | 0:41:59 | 0:42:06
on your red button, BBC Sport app
and website. And exactly what Mark | 0:42:06 | 0:42:12
King needed, to get on the board,
but he knocked in a fantastic red, | 0:42:12 | 0:42:16
then he missed a few chances. This
was as good a shot as Mark King will | 0:42:16 | 0:42:22
play all week. It was a shock to
nothing, the only one he leaves, | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
when he is playing, that is a
typical Mark King shot. There was | 0:42:26 | 0:42:30
one later in the framework Sean
Murphy has missed a trick. He is | 0:42:30 | 0:42:34
probably the best there is with the
rest, but he misses a little cut | 0:42:34 | 0:42:41
back red, that was effectively a cut
ball for a player of his standard, | 0:42:41 | 0:42:44
but it was a really neat and tidy 53
by Mark King, typical Mark King. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:51
JOHN PARROTT: Very gutsy, certainly
what he was in his last match, Mark | 0:42:54 | 0:43:07
King, he dug in, and I was hugely
impressed, as most people were, that | 0:43:07 | 0:43:11
he came back to win that match. It
is never easy beating John Higgins | 0:43:11 | 0:43:17
at any time, whether he is at his
best not, but mark dug in, and that | 0:43:17 | 0:43:24
is why he is in the quarterfinal. | 0:43:24 | 0:43:26
Goodness me. The way he is going
with his long potting, you could | 0:43:34 | 0:43:45
make a video just of these.
Absolutely stunning, that is, | 0:43:45 | 0:43:51
wonderful cueing. Not many players
you would be thinking, go on, son, | 0:43:51 | 0:43:59
have a go at that one. And then all
of a sudden you are sitting in your | 0:43:59 | 0:44:04
chair and he has got a magnificent
chance. That was a brilliant shot. | 0:44:04 | 0:44:08
One of the top shots of the
tournament so far. Nice little | 0:44:14 | 0:44:22
cannon on the red, he has got a red
into the left corner. The cue ball | 0:44:22 | 0:44:28
will be running into the reds,
hopefully opening up that pack. A | 0:44:28 | 0:44:32
lot of top spin. He just needs to be
careful here, he has got to push the | 0:44:32 | 0:44:39
cue ball through the pack of reds.
He is screwing back, he has got to | 0:44:39 | 0:44:44
be on the block. -- the black. If
there was a loose red at the back of | 0:44:44 | 0:44:55
the black, it wouldn't be too bad,
but I don't think he can generate | 0:44:55 | 0:44:59
too much out of this. Let's just see
how he plays this. Well, that is | 0:44:59 | 0:45:10
just magnificent. It really is top,
top cueing. I can't tell you just | 0:45:10 | 0:45:16
how hard a shot that is. The cue
comes right back, straight through. | 0:45:16 | 0:45:22
You can't play it any better than
that, you really can't. | 0:45:22 | 0:45:26
A little bit straight on this blue,
just to screw back and take a red | 0:45:37 | 0:45:44
from the distance. | 0:45:44 | 0:45:47
The target is 69, to leave his
opponent needing the snooker. | 0:45:54 | 0:46:04
It is a lovely, crisp sound every
time Sean Murphy knocks one of these | 0:46:17 | 0:46:23
reds into the pocket, it hit the
back of the leather, really crisp | 0:46:23 | 0:46:32
cueing. You know what I mean, he is
a good ball striker, no dropping in | 0:46:32 | 0:46:38
off jaws or fiddling about with it,
it is just authority. If you were on | 0:46:38 | 0:46:45
the other table and Sean was
playing, you would know it was him. | 0:46:45 | 0:46:50
It's the way he queues and hits the
ball in the pocket. This is a nice | 0:46:50 | 0:46:54
angle for the cannon here. He has
played it very well, reading to the | 0:46:54 | 0:47:01
left corner. -- red into the left
corner. And when he pots this red, | 0:47:01 | 0:47:17
it will be open to the bottom corner
pocket. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:19
Lovely little cannon if he wants it.
Lots of options, but the red to the | 0:47:25 | 0:47:35
right of the pink fits in the open,
he can play a little cannon printer | 0:47:35 | 0:47:39
that one, and the red at the bottom
near the black is also open. | 0:47:39 | 0:47:49
Could have done with hitting that
full ball, but he got it half ball | 0:47:54 | 0:48:02
instead. He can still pot it. And in
fact, the pink goes, so that's happy | 0:48:02 | 0:48:10
days. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:11 | |
He's just concerned about where the
pink spots, he is having a look at | 0:48:30 | 0:48:36
where he puts | 0:48:36 | 0:48:41
and that is one of the typical,
silly shots from Paul Murphy. I | 0:48:47 | 0:48:56
shouldn't have been anywhere near
the yellow. He is motoring along | 0:48:56 | 0:49:00
nicely, and just now and again, a
typical shot from him. | 0:49:00 | 0:49:07
That pink was a funny situation, if
it had gone in nearest to its own | 0:49:07 | 0:49:12
spot behind it, that would have
stopped that red that he has just | 0:49:12 | 0:49:18
taken. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:20
It has got to be a little
frustrating, because boy, is he | 0:49:32 | 0:49:38
hitting it good. Striking it
supremely well. It is only a little | 0:49:38 | 0:49:43
bit of position that can stop him
clearing up every time with that cue | 0:49:43 | 0:49:47
action, the way he is hitting it at
the minute. It is obvious when he | 0:49:47 | 0:49:52
gets around 40, 50, 60 points. | 0:49:52 | 0:49:56
Just before he gets to his opponent
needing snookers, he just drops in | 0:49:59 | 0:50:13
the odd silly shot. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:16
He has had a good look around, and I
don't know why he is loath to play | 0:50:36 | 0:50:42
this one, because it is the right
one to play. A natural angle to play | 0:50:42 | 0:50:46
a little stun and bring the cue ball
back into the baulk cushion area. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:53
Yes, never any trouble playing that
shot. | 0:50:53 | 0:50:56 | |
And a very good safety it is, too.
Can't see past down the left side of | 0:51:18 | 0:51:24
the brown to the reds that are
behind the pink. The one on the | 0:51:24 | 0:51:31
right-hand cushion has got
double-kiss written all over it. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:38
And because he was cannon into other
balls, he knew there was a good | 0:51:44 | 0:51:51
chance he would put one to a corner.
So, another chance for Sean. | 0:51:51 | 0:52:00
He can soft screw this brown in and
try to get onto that red just below | 0:52:22 | 0:52:26
the black. | 0:52:26 | 0:52:27
Looks pretty good. Excellent
positional shot. 61 ahead, so red | 0:52:30 | 0:52:39
and black will be enough.
This is lovely, just a little screw | 0:52:39 | 0:52:47
back to leave the angle on the
black, and the bottom red goes the | 0:52:47 | 0:52:50
opposite corner, so it is looking
like to- one. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:54
It has been quickfire stuff, these
first few frames. Coming up to 43 | 0:53:29 | 0:53:41
minutes for the match, three frames
to the good. | 0:53:41 | 0:53:54
He is terrific to watch when he is
playing it like this. Some of the | 0:53:56 | 0:54:02
cueing in this match has been
exemplary. Particularly these long | 0:54:02 | 0:54:10
pots. As that red stays in the jaws
of the pocket. So, Sean Murphy goes | 0:54:10 | 0:54:23
back into the lead, and he leads
Mark King 2-1 and mark is leaving | 0:54:23 | 0:54:31
the arena for a very short breaks,
and that gives us an opportunity to | 0:54:31 | 0:54:35
drop into the other match, Ryan Day
taking on Mark Joyce. | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
I know you have been keeping an eye
on this one. | 0:54:38 | 0:54:49
Yes, Mark Joyce, there is a worry
here, the occasion getting to him. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:54
Likewise, Ryan Day, mind you, it has
not been fireworks so far. As you | 0:54:54 | 0:54:59
can see here, he is in with a decent
chance of getting back to 2-2 before | 0:54:59 | 0:55:09
the mid-session interval. If you
want to carry on watching this live, | 0:55:09 | 0:55:13
that is available on the BBC red
button, BBC Sport website and app, | 0:55:13 | 0:55:17
but in the meantime, let's go back
to the match we are watching, Sean | 0:55:17 | 0:55:21
Murphy taking on Mark King, and just
finding his rhythm again. Yes, the | 0:55:21 | 0:55:26
red that he potted, the first ball
of the frame, this is that good that | 0:55:26 | 0:55:35
probably half of the players on the
main tour are not even capable of | 0:55:35 | 0:55:39
playing that shot, that is how good
it was. He can take the game away | 0:55:39 | 0:55:44
from you, turn your lights out
quickly, but he is not winning | 0:55:44 | 0:55:48
frames in one visit. Still the odd
little shot here and there is going | 0:55:48 | 0:55:51
awry. Screwing in between yellow and
brown, and caught the yellow, an | 0:55:51 | 0:55:58
elementary error that has been
typical of his game the whole week. | 0:55:58 | 0:56:01
If he cuts those out, he can turn
anyone's lights out, but Mark King | 0:56:01 | 0:56:06
will battle the whole way. And that
was one of those pots from Sean | 0:56:06 | 0:56:10
Murphy where everything just went,
wow. I would still be out there, | 0:56:10 | 0:56:24
trying to hit that that well, that
was incredible, it really was | 0:56:24 | 0:56:30
awesome. I think there are a few
shots that he has played tonight | 0:56:30 | 0:56:33
that almost defy logic. I mean,
these are standard long balls from | 0:56:33 | 0:56:39
Sean Murphy, but it just proves that
you just can't afford to leave him | 0:56:39 | 0:56:43
anything. That's why when you leave
Sean Murphy any sort of long shot at | 0:56:43 | 0:56:48
all as a player, as an opponent, you
go back to Yorkshire -- back to your | 0:56:48 | 0:56:56
chair and you think, is that it? So
are you saying there is no one else | 0:56:56 | 0:57:03
on the circuit that can cue that
well? No one can hit the ball better | 0:57:03 | 0:57:10
than that. Fantastic stuff from Sean
Murphy. Mark King has got a smile on | 0:57:10 | 0:57:16
his face. Back for a few more
minutes, because we are leaving at | 0:57:16 | 0:57:21
eight o'clock tonight but we will be
heading straight to the red button, | 0:57:21 | 0:57:23
you will not miss the point. | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
JOHN PARROTT: Great to see those
long pots that he played their put | 0:57:28 | 0:57:34
back-to-back, just to see how good
the cueing was. Absolutely fabulous | 0:57:34 | 0:57:40
with the last one that you saw
there. That is as good a shot as you | 0:57:40 | 0:57:44
have seen this week, that one off
the bottom cushion, to cue that and | 0:57:44 | 0:57:48
get up the table, fabulous. | 0:57:48 | 0:57:50
JASON MOHAMMAD: It is that time of
the evening were have to tell you | 0:58:29 | 0:58:33
that we are off to the red button.
If you hit your red button now, you | 0:58:33 | 0:58:39
will not miss a thing, John Parrott
on Ken Doherty guiding you through | 0:58:39 | 0:58:42
this one. And then tomorrow, the
first semifinal, 1:15pm on BBC One, | 0:58:42 | 0:58:49
and the quarterfinal highlights
tonight at five past 11. Ronnie | 0:58:49 | 0:58:54
O'Sullivan and Stephen McGuire,
1:15pm tomorrow with Hazel. Thank | 0:58:54 | 0:58:59
you for | 0:58:59 | 0:58:59 |
