Shall I compare the two summers day? Thou art lovely and more temperate.

:00:18.:00:27.

Rough winds do shake the Darling buds of May. And some are's group

:00:28.:00:41.

youth has too short a date. Often it is gold complexion gained.

:00:42.:00:51.

By chance, on nature 's changing course. You cannot be serious. That

:00:52.:01:02.

ball was on the line. But by internal summer shall not fade. Nor

:01:03.:01:15.

lose possession of that fair. Thou shall one dressed in his shade when

:01:16.:01:21.

in eternal lines to time. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see. So

:01:22.:01:38.

long lives this and this is life. Welcome to Wimbledon 2016.

:01:39.:02:16.

Those words we just heard from William Shakespeare still resonate

:02:17.:02:22.

400 years after his passing. What a perfect way to welcome the start of

:02:23.:02:28.

the Championships as Wimbledon celebrates its 130th year. It is a

:02:29.:02:33.

tournament is steeped in history and tradition and remains the most

:02:34.:02:37.

prestigious prize in tennis. Two of the great champions who have won

:02:38.:02:40.

here, Boris Becker and Martina Navratilova say that Centre Court to

:02:41.:02:46.

them is like coming home. Good afternoon. I feel very much the same

:02:47.:02:52.

here in this beautiful BBC studio. What an outlook we have over the

:02:53.:02:56.

grounds. Wimbledon is always special. This will be my home for

:02:57.:03:00.

the next two weeks and we look forward to steering you through what

:03:01.:03:03.

will prove to be a magical tournament. The weather has been

:03:04.:03:07.

kind to us on the opening day, bathed in sunshine and play is

:03:08.:03:10.

underway and here are some of the stars you can see this afternoon.

:03:11.:03:17.

Novak Djokovic begins his campaign to win a third straight Wimbledon

:03:18.:03:21.

and a fifth consecutive grand slam. The top seed faces British number

:03:22.:03:24.

five James Ward in the opening match on Centre Court. French Open

:03:25.:03:32.

champion Garbine Muguruza was the runner-up at Wimbledon last year and

:03:33.:03:38.

start title bid here. Seven time champion Roger Federer loves this

:03:39.:03:41.

place but has not won a Grand Slam in four years. Venus Williams is a

:03:42.:03:48.

familiar face at the All-England Club, the five-time champion begins

:03:49.:03:52.

her 19th Wimbledon today. Former British number one Laura Robson beat

:03:53.:03:56.

Angelique Kerber at this stage the five years ago but has since been

:03:57.:04:01.

plagued by injury. Angelique Kerber's star has risen after she

:04:02.:04:05.

won the Australian Open earlier this year. Milos Raonic has a super serve

:04:06.:04:10.

and he is here with his new super coach, John McEnroe will be in the

:04:11.:04:17.

Canadian's corner. And those are some of the key names to look out

:04:18.:04:22.

for. Djokovic against James Ward is on Centre Court. Garbine Muguruza

:04:23.:04:26.

next and Roger Federer completes the line-up on Centre Court today. On

:04:27.:04:31.

Court Number One, Venus Williams taking on the 19-year-old. And then,

:04:32.:04:36.

Sam Groth of Australia takes on the number five seed Kei Nishikori and

:04:37.:04:40.

Laura Robson takes on Angelique Kerber on Court number one third.

:04:41.:04:43.

The other matches we will be looking for, Madison Keys, the ninth seed,

:04:44.:04:49.

having just broken into the top ten for the first time. Milos Raonic,

:04:50.:04:53.

who made the final at Queen's Club will be on later this afternoon.

:04:54.:04:58.

Alex Ward of Great Britain got a wildcard and he takes on the

:04:59.:05:03.

talented David Goffin and Naomi Broady is also in action as she

:05:04.:05:11.

takes on one of the seeds here. Just say throughout the we will have live

:05:12.:05:16.

coverage as always on BBC One, BBC Two and the red button. And up to 15

:05:17.:05:22.

courts are available to watch. And if you can't watch, you can listen

:05:23.:05:26.

to live commentary on radio five live and five live sports extra.

:05:27.:05:30.

Wimbledon on the BBC is covered from every angle. Let us tell you what

:05:31.:05:36.

has been happening so far after play got underway at 11:30am. Sabine

:05:37.:05:39.

Lisicki, a former runner-up is sailed through against Shelby Rogers

:05:40.:05:45.

of the United States. Who had such a good run at the French Open

:05:46.:05:49.

recently, dropping just four games as she reached the second round. She

:05:50.:05:57.

is through to face Sam Stosur, the 14th seed, who came through against

:05:58.:06:03.

her Polish opponent. The former US Open champion winning 7-5, 6-3. Sam

:06:04.:06:08.

Stosur against Sabine Lisicki in round two. And the first seed out of

:06:09.:06:15.

the championship is the 25th seed. The Romanian was defeated by a

:06:16.:06:22.

German opponent 6-1, 6-4. The first seed to go out of this year 's

:06:23.:06:30.

championship. In the men's event, Marin Cilic, the 19th, former US

:06:31.:06:34.

Open champion has gone through in straight sets against Ryan Baker of

:06:35.:06:41.

the United States. Who is 32 years old, plagued by injury. -- Brian

:06:42.:06:46.

Baker. He came up against and inform Marin Cilic. And we have lost one

:06:47.:06:53.

seed in the men's championship as well. Philipp Kohlschreiber of

:06:54.:06:58.

Germany has gone out. Losing to Herbert of France. Herbert is the

:06:59.:07:06.

partner of Nicolas Mas at in the Men's Doubles, they are the top

:07:07.:07:14.

seeds at Wimbledon. And Adrian Mannarino, we were watching this

:07:15.:07:19.

earlier on BBC Two. Playing Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, he was not

:07:20.:07:22.

able to take a set of the Frenchman who went through in straight sets.

:07:23.:07:31.

6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Mannarino France goes through and sadly for Kyle Edmund he

:07:32.:07:34.

is out of the tournament in the first round. So that is what has

:07:35.:07:42.

been happening so far today. I say it has been bathed in sunshine, it

:07:43.:07:46.

was lovely. We had a little bit of rain when I first popped in today

:07:47.:07:49.

but let us find out what the weather holds for the rest of the day with

:07:50.:07:54.

Carol Kirkwood. A fabulous view over Henman Hill, they were being used as

:07:55.:08:00.

parasols rather than shelter from the rain. We are not inspecting rain

:08:01.:08:06.

this afternoon. It should stay dry. The cloud will come over and the

:08:07.:08:09.

temperature is down a touch but the sun comes out and we will get

:08:10.:08:14.

temperatures of up to about 21 or 22 Celsius. This evening we are looking

:08:15.:08:19.

at a fine evening ahead with amounts of cloud but sunny spells but

:08:20.:08:23.

staying bright. Tomorrow is a different story. We are accepting

:08:24.:08:27.

rain. It will probably come around mid-afternoon. It should clear early

:08:28.:08:32.

evening but as we head into Wednesday, more rain on the cards

:08:33.:08:37.

around lunchtime. It will be with us for a few hours when it arrives and

:08:38.:08:42.

as it clears, we are once again looking at showery outbreaks of rain

:08:43.:08:45.

on and off throughout the aiming. The more showers on Thursday but

:08:46.:08:50.

hopefully, this forecast may change, things may move a little bit faster

:08:51.:08:57.

than we think at the moment. Thank you Carol. It is the opening day of

:08:58.:09:02.

the Championships and that means the defending champion opens up play.

:09:03.:09:06.

Here he comes, Novak Djokovic leading out Britain's James Ward in

:09:07.:09:08.

this opening round. A huge cheer for both players

:09:09.:09:19.

because James Ward has certainly played his part in Britain's Davis

:09:20.:09:22.

Cup success with that magnificent victory over John is now but he is

:09:23.:09:27.

up against the man of the moment, Novak Djokovic, undefeated in the

:09:28.:09:32.

major championships for 12 months. Djokovic up against James Ward in

:09:33.:09:35.

the opening match on Centre Court. That match is now over on BBC Two.

:09:36.:09:40.

James Ward has finally got back into this match. He was 6-0, 3-0 down but

:09:41.:09:47.

has now broken Djokovic and has won two games. That game is now over on

:09:48.:09:53.

BBC Two. We are going to be heading over to Court Number One because the

:09:54.:09:57.

five-time champion Venus Williams is the number eight seed up against

:09:58.:10:03.

Donovan Ricketts of rosacea, who promised so much at 16 years of age

:10:04.:10:07.

but has not done that well in the last couple of years. She is toted

:10:08.:10:13.

toe with Venus Williams at the moment, 4-4. Venus serving with an

:10:14.:10:18.

advantage, we will join our commentators Tracy Austin and Kris

:10:19.:10:26.

Bradman. COMMENTATOR: Another challenge, we have had plenty of

:10:27.:10:31.

those in the match. Break point in this game. There have been two

:10:32.:10:37.

breaks of serve in a row. No luck there.

:10:38.:10:49.

The story of the match, the first two games, Williams served first,

:10:50.:11:04.

holding from 15-40. We got to breaks in a row and Venus Williams is

:11:05.:11:07.

really struggling behind her second serve so far. Three from 13.

:11:08.:11:14.

Opponent looked very nervous at the start but she is pushing Venus here.

:11:15.:11:23.

She has only won two main draw matches on the tour this year, not

:11:24.:11:27.

coming in with confidence. Playing on this historic court can add

:11:28.:11:32.

nerves as well. On top of that, playing Venus Williams who has won

:11:33.:11:37.

here five times. But Vekic has looked a bit more comfortable in the

:11:38.:11:41.

last few games. The tickly when she broke Venus in that seventh game.

:11:42.:11:49.

She has made some unusual unforced errors. Venus got broken in that

:11:50.:11:55.

seventh game. Some wild errors missing by seven or eight feet. She

:11:56.:12:01.

has not found her rhythm completely yet either. Just her 20th match of

:12:02.:12:05.

the year. Her first on grass. Has not played since the French. A lot

:12:06.:12:10.

of strapping on her upper left leg. She talked about being able to push

:12:11.:12:16.

off on the serve as we have seen. 36 years young, ten days ago. Donna

:12:17.:12:21.

Vekic only has ten hours left as a teenager. She turns 20 at midnight.

:12:22.:12:29.

Serving to stay in this opening set, Vekic at 4-5.

:12:30.:12:38.

What was interesting is that when Vekic broke, she lost the first

:12:39.:12:43.

point of the next game and got very down on herself quickly and then

:12:44.:12:49.

served a double fault. Two double faults in a row. The nerves showed

:12:50.:12:51.

up when she got up in the match. David Felgate on the right, Stan

:12:52.:13:14.

Wawrinka, Vekic's boyfriend in the crowd as well. On the line, first

:13:15.:13:17.

ace. David Felgate the coach of course,

:13:18.:13:29.

second stint as Vekic's coach. Venus reaching for that ball,

:13:30.:13:52.

expecting it to come to her. Terrific hold. Interesting when she

:13:53.:14:19.

was down, she came out and serve an incredible game. Went after it.

:14:20.:14:27.

Played so passively in the eighth game when she was up eight rate. It

:14:28.:14:33.

is amazing how the mind gets in the way in sports.

:14:34.:15:00.

Tough enough taking on Venus Williams for the first time at

:15:01.:15:23.

Wimbledon on Court Number One, she doesn't want to take on herself as

:15:24.:15:25.

well, Vekic. Not much on that second serve at

:15:26.:16:08.

all. Three from 14. So predictable to a right-hander's forehand as

:16:09.:16:09.

well. Got away with it. A little fist pump

:16:10.:16:47.

from Stan Wawrinka, first time I have seen any reaction from him.

:16:48.:16:59.

Talk us through this folly, Tracy? I thought it was going to be a swing

:17:00.:17:00.

folly. -- volley. Such a great range at the net. Vekic

:17:01.:17:30.

actually hit a great shot, tried to keep it down low and away from

:17:31.:17:35.

Williams. One big stretch to the right, long arm and she has got the

:17:36.:17:37.

point. Vekic looking so much more promising

:17:38.:18:20.

since the beginning of the match when she was awfully timid. Really

:18:21.:18:23.

going after her ground strokes now. One from four on break points so

:18:24.:18:45.

far. Solid play, really took it to Venus

:18:46.:19:37.

there. Really impressive in the last couple of games. Better footwork,

:19:38.:19:44.

looking more alert. Hitting with more authority and conviction on her

:19:45.:19:48.

ground strokes. Altogether looks like she believes she can win this

:19:49.:19:54.

set. She look very nervous when she walked on the court. It is

:19:55.:20:03.

remarkable, she has won two of the last 13 matches, losing first-round

:20:04.:20:06.

everywhere, including the qualifying. She dropped down to the

:20:07.:20:11.

$15,000 event at is born a couple of weeks ago but it has been a very

:20:12.:20:16.

lean time. After all of the hype is a 16-year-old. It was an amazing

:20:17.:20:21.

start for her, runner up in Tashkent in her first main draw event but it

:20:22.:20:30.

has been different since. It is often difficult to deal with those

:20:31.:20:36.

huge expectations. You are not used to losing, your confidence takes a

:20:37.:20:42.

hit. Hammond matches has she watched? Always there and always

:20:43.:20:53.

supporting. She is terrific at supporting opponent's shots as well.

:20:54.:21:03.

Vekic serving for the set. This is the same side Vekic served with when

:21:04.:21:06.

she was up a break in the eighth game. I would say if she plays with

:21:07.:21:10.

a bit more aggression in this game. This is the sort of tennis we saw

:21:11.:21:44.

Vekic produced to get into the top 50. Venus needs to do more on that

:21:45.:21:51.

second serve. Any opportunity with the ball sitting up, she has to take

:21:52.:21:52.

a bigger cut to the corners. Big deep breaths. Third double

:21:53.:22:22.

fault, for the year, she has twice as many double faults as aces.

:22:23.:22:50.

She'd missed it. The youngster has got a lot of support here on Court

:22:51.:23:02.

Number One. Two set points. If you don't take it, Venus will.

:23:03.:23:42.

Vekic had that forehand that she didn't do enough with.

:23:43.:24:30.

To smile is back again. She is almost playing the match with the

:24:31.:24:38.

crowd. The quality of this match has really

:24:39.:25:24.

heightened as we go deeper into the first set. Longer rallies and better

:25:25.:25:32.

hitting by both players. From two set points to break point.

:25:33.:25:52.

That second serve kicked off the line. Williams did not get a good

:25:53.:26:08.

hit at it. One from four on break points,

:26:09.:26:43.

Williams. The margins are so small. I feel

:26:44.:27:29.

like Vekic just act off about 20% when she had those set points. Her

:27:30.:27:32.

court position backed up about three feet. Williams took advantage.

:27:33.:28:47.

That is tough. Venus is getting down so low for these strokes. She is six

:28:48.:29:01.

feet one, 180 ?5. Amazing how quickly things can turn

:29:02.:29:23.

around. When she set up the two set points, the noise from the crowd,

:29:24.:29:28.

she couldn't help but smile. That has long gone. Vekic doesn't have a

:29:29.:29:43.

lot of my twins this year. -- match wins. Whereas Williams has a

:29:44.:29:45.

lifetime experience. It is only the second point Vekic

:29:46.:30:33.

has one in the last 11. Is that Wishaw thinking session Mark

:30:34.:30:58.

she's walking already. -- wishful. It wasn't that far in. Venus getting

:30:59.:31:34.

a much read on the Vekic serves, only 48% in.

:31:35.:31:56.

She has used the wrong foot as well today.

:31:57.:32:06.

Such a good shot on the grass. Turf for your opponent to get the

:32:07.:32:13.

traction to turn. 63 minutes, two set points, serving

:32:14.:34:06.

at 6-5, that will hurt. It well, you have to wonder if it is too much to

:34:07.:34:12.

overcome the 19 old, were so little experience in these situations. Such

:34:13.:34:19.

an interesting change of momentum throughout that set of Vekic looking

:34:20.:34:28.

nervous to start, Venus was playing solid but not overpowering, so it

:34:29.:34:34.

let Vekic hang around in the set. She started to gain some confidence.

:34:35.:34:42.

19% of second serve points 14 Venus. That was problematic. It is unlikely

:34:43.:34:49.

we will see that again in the second shared. -- set. She will feel more

:34:50.:34:58.

comfortable, positive in the scoreline. It was Vekic who blinked

:34:59.:35:02.

when she was up the break, a couple of times in that set. She won the

:35:03.:35:12.

spin of the coin and chose to receive. Gave her time to settle

:35:13.:35:19.

those nerves. They moved it well in the opening service game is. She has

:35:20.:35:23.

got to tell herself she is in this, and before the match, the reason she

:35:24.:35:27.

was nervous because of her form, she didn't anticipate getting as close

:35:28.:35:31.

as she has here. She will take that into the second set. In any shape or

:35:32.:35:41.

form. You try to find a way. There has been a lot of talk about the

:35:42.:35:45.

dress Vekic is wearing, it has had to be altered by the company. It is

:35:46.:35:47.

too flimsy and short. Not a good wrong foot. Vekic missing

:35:48.:36:16.

a lot of the first serves at the net, their head is coming down too

:36:17.:36:20.

quickly. She needs to relax at arm and keep that head up a little bit

:36:21.:36:22.

longer. Venus's returns have found the group

:36:23.:36:35.

now. How important is opening service

:36:36.:37:18.

game for Vekic? More important for Vekic, because you had those two set

:37:19.:37:25.

points, she had her hopes up and they disintegrated at that point.

:37:26.:37:37.

See if she gets broken yet if Williams could run away with the

:37:38.:37:38.

second set. That is nice! Vekic has time to get

:37:39.:38:42.

set and to an load, she has done eight a big job, the forehand -- a

:38:43.:38:48.

great job. Awfully good passing shot. To

:38:49.:39:51.

reflect balance to get that outside leg nice and strong do hit that

:39:52.:40:02.

forehand. Well done, really good from 0-30, gets her nose in front,

:40:03.:40:09.

second set. That was an important game to hold, because of Vekic had

:40:10.:40:12.

her chances, it is missed opportunities by her on Court One.

:40:13.:40:16.

The same applies with James Ward over on Centre Court, he said

:40:17.:40:19.

against the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, who had three break

:40:20.:40:26.

points to go 6-5 up, now serving to say, stay in the second set. It is

:40:27.:40:35.

15-30 on his serve. You can see that on BBC Two. But we are staying on

:40:36.:40:45.

Court One here. A bit of mental baggage for Venus, she would have

:40:46.:40:48.

loved to have got the break on the second. A good message from Vekic

:40:49.:40:50.

that hold. Very difficult shot to hit from

:40:51.:41:11.

Vekic. The ball coming across from the court from her, and redirected

:41:12.:41:14.

up the line, accuracy. Very smart shot, didn't go to the

:41:15.:41:38.

place but just the placement. Seven single Grand Slams Venus has.

:41:39.:42:40.

13 in doubles with Serena, three gold at the Olympics.

:42:41.:43:26.

From 0-30, Venus holding on. Vekic making a macro is irritated by how

:43:27.:44:30.

many times Venus is catching the ball. She has got to keep those

:44:31.:44:36.

instructions out of her head, she has enough on her platter.

:44:37.:45:39.

There was the kind of mistakes Venus has to be frustrated by. That is a

:45:40.:45:49.

return which is very makeable, she should be in the offensive position

:45:50.:45:54.

after that return. First match on grass.

:45:55.:46:05.

It is the winning ball back. Both of the Williams sisters might make a

:46:06.:46:18.

grass tournament to their schedule. This has worked well for them. There

:46:19.:46:24.

are not many who could do that. There has been no sign of any signal

:46:25.:46:47.

on the first match back. She is at home. It is amazing. For both

:46:48.:46:54.

players at well, it seems easy traction. -- as well.

:46:55.:47:12.

Fantastic length. Venus looked comfortable on these ground strokes.

:47:13.:47:31.

Getting into a good rhythm, nice length. The bird flu on the court

:47:32.:47:45.

there -- flew. . That is super. Stays in front,

:47:46.:47:56.

Vekic. It is remarkable, this match is one

:47:57.:48:22.

hour and 17 minutes, the five Wimbledon titles for Venus. This

:48:23.:48:30.

battling, back in the top ten having one last year. That is a phenomenal

:48:31.:48:35.

achievement. It is just the fatigue side, winning matches a day, if she

:48:36.:48:45.

can be a serious contender. It is more important for Venus than other

:48:46.:48:52.

players do have quicker matches and hasn't played doubles for a couple

:48:53.:48:57.

of years, played in France trying to get ready for Rio. Here as well. She

:48:58.:49:03.

didn't want to spend so much time on the court, give herself more of a

:49:04.:49:11.

shot when she is in the singles. And at 36, that's another element

:49:12.:49:15.

because she is really breaking all the rules. We've seen a few players

:49:16.:49:20.

at this level, Chris Evert retired when she was 34. I don't see Venus

:49:21.:49:28.

slowing down as far as motivation. She still enjoys the challenge.

:49:29.:49:39.

Number eight in the world, Venus Williams. Set up, second set,

:49:40.:49:44.

serving with new balls. Does often struggle with the balls,

:49:45.:50:08.

doesn't she? But sickly on first serve -- particularly.

:50:09.:50:18.

Going at it as soon as she can. We mention Vekic, she has played for

:50:19.:50:33.

tournaments. She has played some matches, the problem is she hasn't

:50:34.:50:35.

had many wins on the grass. No prizes for guessing it that was a

:50:36.:51:07.

catch or not. 112 miles an hour with new balls. New balls give it a

:51:08.:51:19.

slight advantage to the server, it moves through the court quicker.

:51:20.:51:32.

She is saying the ball is dead. Can sometimes happen when you hit it, it

:51:33.:51:47.

goes soft. The umpire says no. They are new balls.

:51:48.:52:51.

Keeping her eye on the umpire, she knows she has two speed up between

:52:52.:53:04.

points on serve. 20 seconds between. Big serving from Venus. She is not

:53:05.:53:16.

happy, Vekic, about the time Venus is taking over the serve or ball

:53:17.:53:27.

tosses. But three first serves from Venus, couldn't get her racket to

:53:28.:53:28.

contact in time. So often we talk rugby offensive of

:53:29.:54:34.

Venus, but she is good at defensive as well. -- talk about the

:54:35.:54:39.

offensive. That ball is short in the court,

:54:40.:55:01.

Venus needs a step forward and more top-spin on that.

:55:02.:55:14.

People did not hear the call, so Vekic is challenging that mis-hit.

:55:15.:55:20.

Is it out? Good challenge. They both got to

:55:21.:55:27.

challenge is wrong in the first set. It is a great innovation, Hawk-Eye.

:55:28.:57:15.

Great for the players, it is fair at the end of the day if they use their

:57:16.:57:19.

challenge wisely will stop it build strong for the crowd. -- it builds

:57:20.:57:25.

drama for the crowd. Oh, so solid at the net. She has not

:57:26.:57:56.

missed a volley yet. This is where Venus spends more time than usual on

:57:57.:58:03.

this surface, at the net, when she is successful. It did look a little

:58:04.:58:23.

wide, Venus does not look convinced. It has courted, you are right. It

:58:24.:58:26.

was a quick challenge. It has got a similar feel to the

:58:27.:59:00.

first set, it will be about the bigger point. You were world number

:59:01.:59:05.

one at 16, you won big points. How do you get over that line? It is

:59:06.:59:09.

just about feeling, but interest and believe you'd won so many matters,

:59:10.:59:15.

you have played so many big matches and you stay in the moment. I find a

:59:16.:59:19.

lot of the players start thinking ahead to far, like when Vekic got

:59:20.:59:26.

those two set points, she then backed off from being clear on the

:59:27.:59:30.

strategy and the tactic she needed to employ in the next points,

:59:31.:59:35.

instead of thinking big picture, I can win over Venus Williams. It is

:59:36.:59:40.

about staying calm, keeping your heart rate low and keeping clear. It

:59:41.:59:48.

is easier said than done. That is for sure. It is not a coincidence

:59:49.:59:55.

that top players are all able to do all of the above, over and over

:59:56.:00:01.

again in their career. It is good to see Vekic after that terrible form

:00:02.:00:08.

coming in in terms of results. She is having a chat about the time

:00:09.:00:15.

Venus is taken? She is ranked 112th in the world, it doesn't feel like

:00:16.:00:26.

that at all. Still only 19. Nine hours and a quarter, teenage years

:00:27.:00:34.

behind her. Vekic backing up just a little bit.

:00:35.:01:20.

On grass, you really need to hold your ground use your legs push

:01:21.:01:22.

forward. Too late to challenge now. Not a

:01:23.:01:39.

good time to challenge as well. Unless you are pretty sure at this

:01:40.:01:44.

point, save it for bigger points I think. It was in, Hawk-Eye tells us.

:01:45.:02:05.

To me, this is a good sign, when Venus starts to hit winners on the

:02:06.:02:24.

forehand, she stays down because that is the side that can break down

:02:25.:02:31.

and spray. 15 winners therefore Williams but she is still behind

:02:32.:02:35.

Vekic, who is on 23, overall in the match.

:02:36.:03:16.

On serve in this second set, four breaks in the first set. Twice we

:03:17.:03:25.

had back-to-back breaks. Over an hour and a half now as well, for a

:03:26.:03:28.

set and a half. The backhand down the line has been

:03:29.:03:41.

spot on. Really great also hiking by both

:03:42.:05:17.

players. Having to get the legs way down and get the racket head

:05:18.:05:23.

underneath the ball. A lot of power from both players.

:05:24.:05:39.

Venus just widening the court there are little, getting a sharp ankle.

:05:40.:05:46.

-- angle. Makes me giggle, the come on from

:05:47.:06:09.

the Croatian. We have talked about the lack of

:06:10.:07:10.

form coming in, the lack of wins and her ranking on the slide. But

:07:11.:07:14.

sometimes just one win or a performance can turn everything

:07:15.:07:18.

around? Absolutely. I think even if she doesn't win this match, her

:07:19.:07:22.

confidence has grown. To be able to stay toted toe and have two set

:07:23.:07:28.

points in the first set. Recognise her game is strong enough to compete

:07:29.:07:34.

at this level with a top ten player. David Felgate, her coach will be

:07:35.:07:38.

feeding this as well, saying what she did well. A good form and a good

:07:39.:07:44.

run is just around the corner. Just keep working hard and putting in the

:07:45.:07:49.

hours. That is what you see in press conferences, they go out every day.

:07:50.:07:56.

Just to go out and give 100%. You figure that in the end it will pay

:07:57.:08:02.

off. As you said, it can take one good match to turn things around.

:08:03.:08:07.

She must feel like she is in a slump right now.

:08:08.:08:17.

Stan Wawrinka, and his agent and Donna's there on the right.

:08:18.:08:33.

Fifth ace. No doubt Venus is serving better as the match goes on. Not

:08:34.:08:55.

only the first service assented. Great play. Make it awkward, the

:08:56.:09:35.

smile is back. Terrific pass from Vekic. Every time she gets the vast

:09:36.:09:41.

an Venus's racket, she hits a winner but she gets this one down low.

:09:42.:09:52.

How do you defend that? Venus could tell you she was going to hit that

:09:53.:10:01.

one and would still ace you. Trying for the angle but lost the

:10:02.:10:41.

racket head speed. We have not really yet seen a drop shot or a

:10:42.:10:44.

deliberate short ball to bring someone in.

:10:45.:11:09.

On cue. What telepathy. Took advantage of it well as well. Most

:11:10.:11:30.

players like to come into the net on their own terms.

:11:31.:11:43.

Stunning return. Can really see at times in this match why there were

:11:44.:11:56.

some at excitement about this young woman when she was 16.

:11:57.:12:30.

Now then. One of those big points we talked about. Six break point for

:12:31.:12:39.

Vekic, she has broken twice. Big points, Williams solid as a

:12:40.:13:13.

rock. Absorbing the pace. Terrific end to the game. A mini

:13:14.:14:53.

battle. To Williams. 116 mph. Just one mile per hour shy of her fastest

:14:54.:14:57.

serve today. At a crucial moment and that is the sign of a good server,

:14:58.:15:02.

they can come up big at the crucial moments.

:15:03.:15:38.

She wasn't ready, she was concerned about the serve, the ball sort of

:15:39.:15:49.

crawled over, didn't it? Often times I think Vekic has to be ready

:15:50.:15:56.

quicker for that second shot. That head continues to come down too

:15:57.:16:02.

quickly on the serve. Hence the ball in the net.

:16:03.:16:23.

Just tightening the rains here, Williams. You just don't feel she is

:16:24.:16:31.

going to miss. You feel they has that extra gear to go to in the big

:16:32.:16:37.

moments. Particularly on this surface. At this tournament. You

:16:38.:16:43.

feel that she has 25% more belief when she walks into these grounds.

:16:44.:16:53.

Venus won here for the first time when Donna was three.

:16:54.:17:19.

Brilliant. Punishing ground strokes from Williams.

:17:20.:17:35.

Terrific footwork to get enough room. Two more break points, two

:17:36.:17:49.

from five converted so far. Vekic has got to feel like these are match

:17:50.:17:51.

points. So again, you go back to those

:17:52.:18:53.

chances in the first set for Donna Vekic and same in the second. That

:18:54.:18:57.

break point when she was rallying well and she suddenly went for an

:18:58.:19:01.

ambitious forehand down the line. What happens in that moment, hoping

:19:02.:19:08.

to hit the winner? I think that is a little scar tissue on the year. So

:19:09.:19:11.

many losses under your belt and so few wins that you can pull from. You

:19:12.:19:16.

start to have those doubts that creep into your head just before

:19:17.:19:20.

point of contact rather than playing on instinct and belief behind you.

:19:21.:19:27.

The doubts start to creep in and that is such a difficult time for an

:19:28.:19:31.

athlete to get out of her slump and try to get back to where they are

:19:32.:19:37.

feeling positive on the court. We can see that Vekic can hit the ball

:19:38.:19:46.

beautifully. First serve percentage could be higher, 51%. She clearly

:19:47.:19:51.

needs to be about 65, especially against someone like Williams who

:19:52.:20:02.

returns so well. It has taken an hour and 49 minutes. The five-time

:20:03.:20:07.

former champion will serve for the match. At a set and 5-4.

:20:08.:20:52.

Finishing with a flourish here, Williams. Three match points.

:20:53.:23:01.

A tough opener. First match on the grass this year for Venus Williams

:23:02.:23:13.

ends in success. Terrific effort by Donna Vekic. Just the big points to

:23:14.:23:18.

Williams. So often in her career, she wins them, she did today. She is

:23:19.:23:21.

through to round two. And there are plenty pleased about

:23:22.:23:40.

it as well. 71st Grand Slam main draw. Vekic will turn 20 tomorrow,

:23:41.:23:48.

she will be back for more, hopefully she will find her belief and

:23:49.:23:53.

confidence. They enjoyed her performance, the crowd. They really

:23:54.:23:57.

tried to get behind her as well. She gave Venus Williams a run for her

:23:58.:24:04.

first round money. Amazing record here. Five titles, eight finals,

:24:05.:24:09.

three other quarterfinals. Always dangerous here at Wimbledon.

:24:10.:24:28.

You can just tell at 36 years old she soaks it up and takes it in.

:24:29.:24:42.

First match on this opening day comes to an end, the crowd will be

:24:43.:24:49.

able to get some refreshment before the next match takes to the court.

:24:50.:24:54.

The court played magnificently, as you would expect. A super day that

:24:55.:24:58.

opens the championship this year. Plenty of sunshine and with warmth

:24:59.:25:00.

in the sunshine as well. It was straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

:25:01.:25:19.

Venus Williams talks to us. Some high-quality tennis at the today. A

:25:20.:25:23.

tough introduction back to Wimbledon, how would you assess your

:25:24.:25:28.

performance? The first round is never easy and she played good

:25:29.:25:33.

tennis. She is working hard. I come out and I had the players to feel

:25:34.:25:38.

free and go for it. I felt like I couldn't hit the winner to start

:25:39.:25:43.

with, she ran everything down. You took control back and must be

:25:44.:25:46.

delighted with how you finished off both sets. Won yes, the first set

:25:47.:25:53.

had some hairy moments, bound some set points. That is where experience

:25:54.:25:59.

kicks in. That is where I felt I had the chance to win the most important

:26:00.:26:05.

points. Definitely needed the experience. You are in your 19th

:26:06.:26:10.

Wimbledon and playing against a 19-year-old, experience on your

:26:11.:26:14.

side. People are quick to mention your age and your health, what is

:26:15.:26:18.

the secret to keeping going and playing these matches at a

:26:19.:26:24.

high-level? You have got to enjoy the battle. Every single time you

:26:25.:26:28.

walk on the court it is a battle. You never know how your opponent

:26:29.:26:31.

will play, the wind might blow, you might play badly. You just have to

:26:32.:26:36.

enjoy it and fight every single time. The crowd love seeing you

:26:37.:26:42.

here, how special is it after all these years coming to Wimbledon? You

:26:43.:26:49.

only live once, so you have to enjoy it. You have to do it while you are

:26:50.:26:54.

fairly young. And I guess somehow I am still fairly young. You just have

:26:55.:27:00.

to live in the moment. When it is over, it is over. Certainly not over

:27:01.:27:09.

yet. Congratulations. Thank you. Venus proving what a great champion

:27:10.:27:16.

she is. The five-time champion digging deep at the end of each set,

:27:17.:27:21.

saving set points against a very talented young player. She keeps her

:27:22.:27:25.

dream alive. She calls Wimbledon the love of her life and enjoys being

:27:26.:27:29.

here. The great champion is through to the next round.

:27:30.:27:38.

Venus goes through in straight sets. 7-6, 6-4. Let us remind you and tell

:27:39.:27:49.

you what has been happening elsewhere. We have some match points

:27:50.:27:54.

and a bit of a shock. Ana Ivanovic, the 23rd seed has gone out, 6-2,

:27:55.:28:04.

7-5. This is the young lady who put out Harriet Dart in the qualifying,

:28:05.:28:09.

13-11 in the third set. Britain's Harriet Dart, beaten in the

:28:10.:28:14.

qualifying. What a story that is. Madison Keyes is through. The

:28:15.:28:19.

American number nine seed losing just four games to Laura Sigman and

:28:20.:28:24.

of Germany. She is through to face Kerstin Filkins of Germany in the

:28:25.:28:26.

next round. -- Sigman and. That is what has been happening in

:28:27.:28:40.

the ladies. Ivo Karlovic, six feet ten with a massive serve has put up

:28:41.:28:45.

Borna Coric of Croatia, one of the rising stars. No answer to the big

:28:46.:28:48.

serve of the Croatian. David Ferrer also through, he missed

:28:49.:29:04.

the Championships last year because of an injury but lost just four

:29:05.:29:07.

games on his way through to the second round.

:29:08.:29:15.

Huge cheer the David Ferrer, and a huge cheer the Novak Djokovic, the

:29:16.:29:23.

defending champion, he is put out Britain's James Wharton, he was one

:29:24.:29:29.

setup, but James Ward made it battle that, and Djokovic going through

:29:30.:29:36.

6-0, 7-6, 6-4, James Ward's burst appearance on Centre Court. -- first

:29:37.:29:45.

appearance. Novak Djokovic, he loved his Centre Court last year, winning

:29:46.:29:51.

the final, winning the championship yet once again, he holds all the

:29:52.:29:55.

macro all for grand slam titles and is the one to beat. The man who is

:29:56.:30:00.

trying to be Tim is Andy Murray. He will make his debut at this year's

:30:01.:30:07.

chairmanship tomorrow. We have been seeing Murray with his pre-bummer

:30:08.:30:11.

than photo shoot, and we went to visit him underground. --

:30:12.:30:15.

pre-Wimbledon. You are on top of the world at

:30:16.:30:26.

Canary Wharf last year, you've gone underground. It is the only

:30:27.:30:32.

semi-date we've had. You have come off the back of your fifth Queen's,

:30:33.:30:39.

how much did that title mean to you? I came into Queen's with only a

:30:40.:30:43.

couple of days preparation on the grass, said play some good tennis

:30:44.:30:51.

was nice. Any time you can break a record, do something that's not been

:30:52.:30:57.

done before, it gives you a lift. Queen's, as a tournament, means a

:30:58.:31:04.

lot to me. You have had a great season, you've got to the final of

:31:05.:31:09.

two Grand Slams. Is that enough EU, or do you measure success on winning

:31:10.:31:17.

them? -- is that enough for you. I can't win all of them, I'm putting

:31:18.:31:24.

my self in the positions. My a Chrissy has been go, I've had the

:31:25.:31:31.

best clay-court series. -- my accuracy. Although I didn't get what

:31:32.:31:36.

I wanted, there is still the Olympics to come, two Grand Slams.

:31:37.:31:41.

The season is far from finished yet. In order to beat Novak Djokovic,

:31:42.:31:47.

what do you do? I know when I go on the court, if I want to win, I have

:31:48.:31:52.

to play a great match. You have to be tactical, you have to be fresh,

:31:53.:31:58.

and therefore the better you are. You have to play a greater match. If

:31:59.:32:02.

I do play, it would have to be in the final. I would sign up for that

:32:03.:32:07.

now. Just wait and see. Your grand slam victories, how much was at

:32:08.:32:20.

having your coach back? I've spoken to him, timings didn't work out in

:32:21.:32:26.

the past. To have him back is great. I enjoy working with him in the

:32:27.:32:30.

past, we had a lot of success together. How does the relationship

:32:31.:32:35.

work? Do you start from the beginning or way you left off? We

:32:36.:32:41.

start from where we were. I have a team in place before he came back,

:32:42.:32:46.

and I started working with Jimmy Delgadillo. My results were good.

:32:47.:32:54.

How long does it take his ethos to involve trade into your match and

:32:55.:33:01.

psychology? Was it there in Queen's? That can have an immediate impact.

:33:02.:33:06.

In terms of making changes in your game, that can take a little bit

:33:07.:33:12.

longer, that takes time on the practice court for them to get

:33:13.:33:17.

better. You can't he told Justice serve better having his experience

:33:18.:33:25.

in the team will be a benefit. I am sure he will help me in the next few

:33:26.:33:26.

weeks. Looks a very dramatic photo shoot.

:33:27.:33:44.

It is interesting, Ivan Lendl back, he had so much success. He did have

:33:45.:33:50.

success, and Andy has had a great couple of years coming back from the

:33:51.:33:56.

back injury. I think he is happy to have Ivan Lendl back in his team,

:33:57.:34:00.

just to get that extra bit of experience. He had his best couple

:34:01.:34:06.

of years when he was on his team. Andy Murray place tomorrow. You'd

:34:07.:34:11.

come back from watching Venus Williams. She still plays so well.

:34:12.:34:18.

36 years old, still moves well and has those champion instincts. She

:34:19.:34:22.

does, because she didn't play that well today. She got through that

:34:23.:34:27.

match. It was in the crucial moment where she was able to elevate her

:34:28.:34:30.

game. I think that went been as macro walk through the grounds here,

:34:31.:34:38.

she improves by 25% -- when Venus. Just with the knowledge her game

:34:39.:34:42.

matches up with the service, with the big serve. She plays around the

:34:43.:34:50.

forecourt very well. She gets down so low, most of the points will be

:34:51.:34:59.

long. That bodes for her. You think about the ailments she has had, do

:35:00.:35:03.

you think she has another grand slam in her or is she happy to be just

:35:04.:35:08.

playing and enjoying computing? A bit of both, she think she can be

:35:09.:35:13.

dangerous again. She did well in the grand slam, got to the quarters of

:35:14.:35:19.

the US Open, fourth round here and broken to the top ten again at 35.

:35:20.:35:25.

Nobody really wants to see the name next to Venus at London because she

:35:26.:35:29.

has so much experience and so many wins here. She has won 76 matches,

:35:30.:35:35.

or something like that. And outrageous number of matches. At 36,

:35:36.:35:40.

I think her passion is still just as strong as when she was 17. That says

:35:41.:35:45.

a lot because it was Richard who said at the beginning of their

:35:46.:35:50.

careers, they have so many things they want to move on to. The fact

:35:51.:35:55.

they've gone on and on some other things and being away from tennis

:35:56.:35:58.

for a bit of time has helped them than their careers. It is amazing

:35:59.:36:03.

how tennis has changed since Venus first appeared on the scene. It was

:36:04.:36:09.

Venus and Serena who made a big change. Every ten years there is

:36:10.:36:14.

some change, and the change they brought was they could hit

:36:15.:36:17.

offensively from defensive positions. There was no place to go

:36:18.:36:23.

to, there was power from the serve, from the backhand. When they were

:36:24.:36:27.

eight feet behind, they could still make winners. They made the rest of

:36:28.:36:31.

the tournament stronger, they spent time in the gym. People had to be

:36:32.:36:40.

more physical. Those two, Venus and Serena, really heightened the level

:36:41.:36:44.

where everyone had to be so much physical with their game. Tracy,

:36:45.:36:50.

stayed there, because we will be going to Centre Court soon. We were

:36:51.:36:57.

talking about Venus Williams and the illnesses she has had, but someone

:36:58.:37:01.

who has had a tab time as Law Robson. Wrist surgery and last week

:37:02.:37:08.

she had an injured by a -- injured fire. -- Laura Robson.

:37:09.:37:22.

Laura, what do you make of the draw, the Australian champion? Are you

:37:23.:37:30.

cursing your luck? Definitely not cursing it, they're always tough

:37:31.:37:37.

games here. Going into it, I knew any match would be tough. She is a

:37:38.:37:46.

hard opponent. She has won a slam this year. It is interesting to see

:37:47.:37:58.

how we match up. 24 years Britain has been waiting for a junior

:37:59.:38:06.

champion, they have one now. It is your history here, having been

:38:07.:38:10.

junior champion. Does it count for a lot? Do you feel more confident? It

:38:11.:38:16.

is always a special atmosphere playing here. I live ten minutes

:38:17.:38:21.

away, it is my home tournament. Every match on any court is a

:38:22.:38:25.

special one. I've been very lucky to play on visually every court in this

:38:26.:38:32.

place. I am super excited and thrilled to be a part of the

:38:33.:38:35.

tournament. Hoping to ready play well as well. Generally, over the

:38:36.:38:41.

last few months, would it be fair to say you've been fit in that time?

:38:42.:38:47.

You have been able to play tennis. Finally healthy and fit. This is the

:38:48.:38:51.

longest period of time in a long while. It is nice to play a

:38:52.:38:56.

tournament back-to-back, and I'm not worried about hurting my wrist.

:38:57.:39:02.

Little niggles come up like every other player, but nothing, touch

:39:03.:39:09.

wood, nothing big. You said your brain was switching off at deuce.

:39:10.:39:15.

Have you can't be on switch? I hope so, we will find out. It is

:39:16.:39:19.

something that comes with confidence and having that inner belief you

:39:20.:39:24.

will make the Romeu on the big points. That is a work in progress

:39:25.:39:33.

-- make the ball. Russell Fuller was asking the questions there. Great to

:39:34.:39:37.

say she is healthy, and she is going on Court One. Back in 2008, everyone

:39:38.:39:45.

expecting so much, she loved the big occasions, but these injuries, and

:39:46.:39:49.

when he has surgery, it is so hard. Especially from a rest. Laura was a

:39:50.:39:59.

highly touted junior, and she beat Angelique Kerber in 2011, but that

:40:00.:40:04.

was before she was part of the elite, and Laura was on the rise.

:40:05.:40:09.

She has nothing to lose, the crowd will be in her favour. Hopefully she

:40:10.:40:14.

can use that to feed off their energy and Kerber, it has been an

:40:15.:40:19.

interesting year, starting after with a win at the Australian Open

:40:20.:40:23.

and then struggling to put match wins on the board, because of the

:40:24.:40:30.

expectations. Remember, she lost in the first round of the French Open.

:40:31.:40:36.

Laura Robson, go out and use your skill on the grass. Does it work

:40:37.:40:47.

well Angelique Kerber doesn't play much left hand shops. Any match in a

:40:48.:40:54.

grand slam, first round, you have nerves, but she feels more confident

:40:55.:41:02.

at Wimbledon. Kerber won't like playing Robson, who can hurt. She

:41:03.:41:07.

feels so comfortable her. Angelique Kerber has played well on grass, she

:41:08.:41:14.

won last year. It has been so topsy-turvy this year, it has been

:41:15.:41:17.

Serena Williams and then everyone fighting to win to become number two

:41:18.:41:22.

in the world. Nobody has sustained it. Whether it is Kerber or

:41:23.:41:31.

Muguruza. It has been up and down. It gives people who are ranked 70

:41:32.:41:36.

and 80, it gives players that are ranked lower that feeling, why not

:41:37.:41:40.

me? I've seen someone else ranked at my level upset a normal player. You

:41:41.:41:50.

mentioned Catrina Muguruza -- Garbine Muguruza. You can see that

:41:51.:41:59.

the monkey is off her back. She won't be asked, when will you win

:42:00.:42:04.

your first grand slam title? There are more expectations of... People

:42:05.:42:11.

were saying last year, that big game, she moves well, she seems to

:42:12.:42:15.

handle her emotions on court. She is regal the way she walks out there.

:42:16.:42:20.

They were in 19 hurt the next number one when Serena Williams retires. I

:42:21.:42:28.

think we were. We have seen so many players who have gotten to number

:42:29.:42:34.

one and in the last five years, that trend has changed. They have

:42:35.:42:43.

struggled. Garbine Muguruza, the star attraction on the ladies tour.

:42:44.:42:47.

After that French Open win. There she is on your left, facing Camila

:42:48.:42:57.

Giorgi. Let out on to Centre Court at the Djokovic's first game.

:42:58.:43:07.

Garbine Muguruza stepping out onto court, she wowed the crowds last

:43:08.:43:12.

year. What can she do this year? She is one of the players who have

:43:13.:43:16.

embraced social media, as you will see here.

:43:17.:43:35.

This is my first tournament, and I won my first tournament in

:43:36.:43:42.

Venezuela. This was last year when I reached

:43:43.:43:55.

the final, I lost to Serena. I was so disappointed, as you can

:43:56.:44:08.

see. A very expressive face. This one is from Beijing when I won

:44:09.:44:24.

the trophy. This one is when I realised I won

:44:25.:45:00.

the Grand Slam and they fell down and hurt my knee. It is bleeding

:45:01.:45:10.

here. This was a day in between Paris where I finally got to see the

:45:11.:45:12.

sun, and I wanted to take a self be. What a talent she is, moonwalk in,

:45:13.:45:26.

got all the moves. She can probably cook as well. She is not too shy.

:45:27.:45:33.

Star attraction for the women's game. She can make a fortune but you

:45:34.:45:38.

can go right to the top of the rankings. Beautiful smile, well

:45:39.:45:44.

spoken, takes the media well. Just so much power. Big serve, to hit to

:45:45.:45:51.

all the locations. She hits the ball early and on the rise, not a typical

:45:52.:45:56.

Spanish player for they have so much access of top-spin. She goes after

:45:57.:46:02.

their shots, flat to the corners. We expected so much from her, but she

:46:03.:46:05.

had a bit of a foot injury and struggles for the first few months,

:46:06.:46:12.

but in Miami came around, played better in Rome, got to the

:46:13.:46:16.

semifinals and in the French Open, need we say more? Took the title

:46:17.:46:20.

from Serena Williams, which is a big ask. She has been onto the phone to

:46:21.:46:27.

Rafael Nadal, asking how you change on the grass, moving from one to

:46:28.:46:33.

another. He has helped. We are all ready for this. Last year's finalist

:46:34.:46:39.

against a tricky Italian, Camila Giorgi.

:46:40.:46:46.

COMMENTATOR: This is big for Garbine Muguruza. What she did last year,

:46:47.:46:56.

suddenly she is a star. Played just one match since she won

:46:57.:47:16.

in Paris, lost in Majorca. We have seen it straightaway, no

:47:17.:47:58.

surprise us, they both go after the ball. Both will be camped on their

:47:59.:48:07.

baseline, but agreed to your geek, he will be on the baseline. Her job

:48:08.:48:09.

is to push Muguruza back -- Giorgi. Terratec started. Neither of these

:48:10.:48:41.

players come to ball being dictated to. -- of comfortable.

:48:42.:49:22.

You can probably hear the Italian contingent, the battle between Spain

:49:23.:49:30.

and Italy, and Spain and Italy in your 2016 starting at five o'clock.

:49:31.:49:35.

There is dad in the middle. He is a character.

:49:36.:50:05.

Huge trading from the ground, and even mega power from behind the

:50:06.:50:25.

baseline, got the racket through, so confident is Muguruza after that

:50:26.:50:25.

Paris when. A great play from the Italian. It is

:50:26.:50:51.

interesting with ten two, she is unusual. She has a male idol. -- it

:50:52.:50:55.

is interesting with Giorgi. It is not just power, real talent in

:50:56.:51:22.

the hands as well. We thought it might be an attractive

:51:23.:51:36.

match, and the early signs are good. Again, as soon as she sees the

:51:37.:52:44.

opportunity, she is in quick as a flash. Very precise with her setup,

:52:45.:52:47.

like her idol, Serena Williams. Some wonderful shot from Muguruza.

:52:48.:53:28.

You'll be will be feeling hard done by, didn't do very much wrong in

:53:29.:53:37.

that service game. Super returning from Muguruza. Looks for every

:53:38.:53:44.

opportunity. Released at up to Serena in that Paris final, meant

:53:45.:53:49.

and also with her game, it was like Serena was being beaten by a younger

:53:50.:53:55.

version of herself. Keep an eye on where Muguruza comes from, she

:53:56.:54:02.

stands on the baseline, that is impressive. Like her idol.

:54:03.:54:38.

She was standing about one metre inside the baseline to take that.

:54:39.:54:46.

However much she misses, Angie has been missing a lot this year, she

:54:47.:54:53.

has not changed her stance one iota -- and she has been.

:54:54.:55:06.

Thrilling. Smiles all around. She has such an explosive game, it is

:55:07.:55:17.

all or nothing with Giorgi, she has a Mac live timing and has the body

:55:18.:55:23.

of a gymnast. She used to be a gymnast before she was a tennis

:55:24.:55:24.

player, she is some athlete. Both trained to within an inch of

:55:25.:56:00.

their lives. Muguruza is six foot, Giorgi is five foot six. Doesn't

:56:01.:56:04.

look as tall as that, but that is the reality.

:56:05.:56:31.

A feisty riposte, there is Muguruza's coach. This could be

:56:32.:56:42.

another world number one. Yes, she's not sure but she is not

:56:43.:57:26.

going to challenge. So, two breaks to start this match.

:57:27.:57:35.

With Giorgi, it is all about consistency. We've seen the attitude

:57:36.:57:42.

and stroke making, can she keep it going? She is still 2020 and test

:57:43.:57:44.

side. Hardly had time there, but she found

:57:45.:58:07.

some, she found the space, too. Results over the last few mums have

:58:08.:58:53.

not been too good for Giorgi, she's been struggling with a back injury,

:58:54.:58:58.

and anyone who has had a bad back knows it affects everything you do,

:58:59.:59:01.

training, anything you want to do. It is a struggle.

:59:02.:59:14.

Consequently, results have been tough to take. Seven times she has

:59:15.:59:21.

been a first-round loser. She was seeded last year coming into

:59:22.:59:26.

Wimbledon. Seeded 31 and now she picks up Muguruza in the first

:59:27.:59:27.

round. Do either of these players know the

:59:28.:00:07.

word defence? They don't know the word compromise. It was not in the

:00:08.:00:13.

Spanish coaching manual or the Italian one, it is like someone has

:00:14.:00:15.

ripped it out. These, you have to watch from

:00:16.:00:40.

Georgie. She was unfortunate in the juniors, her serve was absolutely

:00:41.:00:45.

terrible. It is miraculously good compared to how it used to be. But

:00:46.:00:52.

this is a major weakness and why she is down in the rankings.

:00:53.:01:11.

Last year she served more double faults than any other player on the

:01:12.:01:23.

tour, 458. It tells you how good the rest of her game is though that she

:01:24.:01:28.

gets the wooden spoon the last few seasons for the double faults.

:01:29.:01:58.

It was Giorgi who made the play and made the angle. Getting very

:01:59.:02:09.

animated. Not going to have too many long

:02:10.:02:44.

rallies. First strike absolutely vital here.

:02:45.:02:53.

Conchita Martinez, a former champion here of course.

:02:54.:03:06.

Excellent work from Giorgi, staying with Muguruza. Very hard for Garbine

:03:07.:04:11.

and her camp to prepare for this kind of match. You can only really

:04:12.:04:16.

prep for the speed and the type of ball coming at you. Giorgi is so

:04:17.:04:21.

instinctive and makes a lot of late decisions. It is not a comfortable

:04:22.:04:27.

opening match on the grass that is still quite soft at the moment.

:04:28.:04:58.

Another outstanding point from the Spaniard. Be picked up on the

:04:59.:05:06.

half-volley helped. Have a look at this, how precise the footwork is

:05:07.:05:11.

and how early the setup is as well. A lovely replay. The body weight

:05:12.:05:16.

going into the shot, great transfer and a clean strike.

:05:17.:05:41.

Still no backward move from Giorgi. She is doing OK in this rally. Toted

:05:42.:05:46.

toe. Look where she was as she hit that

:05:47.:07:04.

forehand. Not such a stable side of her two ground strokes. A very big

:07:05.:07:08.

Western grip, sort of like a frying pan grip. Sometimes she doesn't use

:07:09.:07:14.

the wrist and get the racket head through the ball and doesn't like

:07:15.:07:15.

being jammed back there. Giorgi working so hard but the

:07:16.:08:12.

natural power does seem to be greater in the Spaniard.

:08:13.:08:31.

Too many misses, critically on that forehand. Doesn't quite have as much

:08:32.:08:38.

cover on the ball and put as much spin on it as someone like Serena

:08:39.:08:43.

Williams. It can balloon if you go hard and fast into it. That is the

:08:44.:08:47.

tactic that Giorgi has brought out here today.

:08:48.:09:15.

One of the longest games of the tournament so far, it has lasted ten

:09:16.:09:19.

minutes up to now. It may turn out to be a very

:09:20.:09:44.

significant game. Five break points saved.

:09:45.:09:55.

Born in Caracas, spent her childhood in Venezuela before moving to

:09:56.:10:04.

Barcelona to train. When she plays, she plays very much for Venezuela as

:10:05.:10:08.

much as Spain although she plays under the flag of Spain. Yes,

:10:09.:10:14.

Conchita Martinez spent many years courtside persuading her that Spain

:10:15.:10:18.

would be a good idea. I think she was always going to represent Spain

:10:19.:10:23.

in the Fed cup. But there is a strong pull towards Venezuela where

:10:24.:10:28.

she likes to spend her holidays. Her mother from Venezuela, her dad, from

:10:29.:10:37.

Spain. As you can imagine, it was huge in both countries. Piller where

:10:38.:10:40.

what is handy about being Spanish is that she was in Majorca for coming

:10:41.:10:46.

out it to the new grass court tournament. She was not ready for

:10:47.:10:49.

that after Paris but she felt she had to go. The upside of losing

:10:50.:10:53.

early is that she spent a lot of time with a Rafael Nadal and his

:10:54.:10:58.

coach. They talked a lot about winning a slam and resetting your

:10:59.:11:03.

goals and not forgetting it but putting it away and starting from

:11:04.:11:08.

zero. How to keep building on the success. I think that was a useful

:11:09.:11:14.

few days she spent out there. She probably would not have got that if

:11:15.:11:23.

she was Venezuela in. A lot of movement in the crowd. Coming in

:11:24.:11:29.

after the Djokovic and James Ward match. You can hear the buzz.

:11:30.:11:45.

Neither of them have served badly but have not held serviette.

:11:46.:12:08.

It is bizarre because both players were on the move and accepting that

:12:09.:12:16.

that ball was in. Giorgi as well as Muguruza, and it was.

:12:17.:12:40.

As we saw, a tracker over the tournament. If she does have another

:12:41.:12:49.

good run here, most of her aces will be collected around the tea in both

:12:50.:13:02.

boxes. At last a whole and a comfortable one as well. -- hold.

:13:03.:13:17.

Fifth Wimbledon for her. Before last year she had done virtually nothing

:13:18.:13:22.

here. Her best was second round a couple of times.

:13:23.:13:53.

Oh. I was going to say well watched. It was brave to take that on the

:13:54.:14:03.

drive volley but the last shot was not pretty. Typical of the younger

:14:04.:14:08.

generation, not so comfortable with the conventional volley, just

:14:09.:14:11.

gripping the racket too tight. Yes. Didn't she do well? You can see

:14:12.:15:06.

Muguruza being pushed off her baseline. Taking the ball so early

:15:07.:15:12.

and hitting it so very hard. Really punches above her weight.

:15:13.:15:32.

And crucially, does not allow her opponents any rhythm.

:15:33.:16:04.

A bit of a boost for Camilla Giorgi but it is Muguruza who leads 3-2.

:16:05.:16:56.

STUDIO: We will be back with this match in the moment but we will show

:16:57.:16:59.

you what is happening elsewhere on the opening day of the

:17:00.:17:03.

Championships. This match is on BBC Two. Milos Raonic of Canada. He was

:17:04.:17:07.

in the final of Queen's two weeks ago. He leads Carreno Busta of

:17:08.:17:19.

Spain. On Court Number One, Kei Nishikori, the fifth seed. They

:17:20.:17:23.

break of serve up against the big serving Australian Sam Groth. He

:17:24.:17:28.

leads 5-3, that is currently available on the red button. And out

:17:29.:17:33.

on court five, what a match this is. Going just over three hours, Lukas

:17:34.:17:40.

Rosol is serving at deuce. He was the player who put out Rafael Nadal

:17:41.:17:44.

in 2012. Up against Sam Querrey, who has come back from two sets down to

:17:45.:17:50.

level it and it is 7-7 in the fifth and final set. That is also

:17:51.:17:55.

available online by connected TV, the BBC sport website or the BBC

:17:56.:18:00.

sport app. Drama out there on Court number five. To quickly tell you

:18:01.:18:04.

that Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, semifinalist back in 2014 is

:18:05.:18:09.

through. He was out on Court 16. His ranking has dropped out of the top

:18:10.:18:14.

ten down to 37 in the world. Good form from him, through in straight

:18:15.:18:20.

sets. Grigor Dimitrov through to the second round at Wimbledon. That is

:18:21.:18:28.

what is happening elsewhere. COMMENTATOR: Muguruza, 3-2 with a

:18:29.:18:30.

break. It seemed like a might as well

:18:31.:19:02.

challenge. The far side from us, a far better view. She decided that on

:19:03.:19:12.

her own accord. I don't think anyone gave her advice.

:19:13.:19:55.

Muguruza doing the right things. If you keep your focus against Giorgi,

:19:56.:20:05.

eventually she will blow out. The ranking, 30 or 67, tells its own

:20:06.:20:06.

story. When you see a highlight reel of her

:20:07.:20:19.

matches, you wouldn't believe she is ranked 67 in the world. But the

:20:20.:20:23.

results speak for themselves as you say. Her shotmaking is an real.

:20:24.:21:07.

Giorgi moving even further up to take this second serve. And there is

:21:08.:21:27.

the result. Stand and deliver. And it was not a bad second serve.

:21:28.:21:33.

Within a foot of the service line. Didn't have a lot of work on it or

:21:34.:21:39.

spin to kick off the court. When the courts are soft, first day at

:21:40.:21:42.

Wimbledon, just wait until they harden up.

:21:43.:21:56.

You will notice that the second serve can sometimes fly over faster

:21:57.:22:46.

than the first served. There is not a lot of control when the ball and

:22:47.:22:50.

the arm gets above shoulder height. It is difficult to imagine the team

:22:51.:23:25.

talk she and her dad go through match by match. I am sure most of it

:23:26.:23:30.

is go for it and trust your shotmaking ability which is

:23:31.:23:35.

prodigious. With Muguruza, it is go for the forehand a little bit more.

:23:36.:23:40.

But I wouldn't think it is too complicated. She is a rather subdued

:23:41.:23:51.

character of court. That is well balanced by her dad, Sergio, who is

:23:52.:23:53.

very exuberant. Yes. Stayed true to herself. Got a

:23:54.:24:06.

lot of the whip on this shot. Not quite. Didn't come back.

:24:07.:24:58.

Muguruza with a chance to break for the third time.

:24:59.:25:43.

It is 5-2. And it is very much as we thought it might be. Giorgi

:25:44.:25:59.

occasionally standing toe to toe and winning a fair amount of points but

:26:00.:26:00.

not enough. Just can't stay with her long

:26:01.:26:22.

enough. I think it is impressive, a nice article in yesterday's Sunday

:26:23.:26:26.

Times. Muguruza was very honest about when she came on to court last

:26:27.:26:32.

year in the final against Serena Williams, she rather underestimated

:26:33.:26:40.

the aura of Serena and the prestige of the occasion. She didn't really

:26:41.:26:44.

understand how much pressure was involved until she walked on court.

:26:45.:26:50.

And it rather through her. At 12 months on a winning in Paris, she

:26:51.:26:55.

felt so calm walking out on the main court at Roland Garros and she looks

:26:56.:27:02.

very calm out here. She looks like Serena as if she owns this court.

:27:03.:27:08.

And just has such presence on the big stage. I don't think it is

:27:09.:27:17.

phasing her at all. After 38 minutes, Muguruza serves for the

:27:18.:27:19.

first set with new balls. Three aces now. If you have done

:27:20.:28:05.

your homework on Muguruza, you would shift a little over to that

:28:06.:28:17.

centreline. She loves that serve. Two aces in the game and another one

:28:18.:28:20.

down the tea. Three set points. Muguruza with plenty of margin for

:28:21.:29:32.

error. Much more constant, she takes the first set 6-2.

:29:33.:29:46.

I think the crowd are very happy with what we have seen. 6-2 set was

:29:47.:29:55.

pretty rough on Giorgi. She played at such a high level. Notice the

:29:56.:30:01.

three double faults, in five service games she hit one in her last three

:30:02.:30:07.

service games. You cannot play one of the best players in the world

:30:08.:30:10.

from a point down when you're on your server. It is difficult to

:30:11.:30:15.

hold. You are putting yourself on such a bad spot. Great win to error

:30:16.:30:21.

ratio for Muguruza. She hits a lot of winners, but she doesn't make too

:30:22.:30:28.

many mistakes. That will do very nicely for the first set.

:30:29.:30:41.

Total commitment, awesome power, and two very different bodies, but the

:30:42.:30:51.

same intent. No challenge. It is asking a lot of

:30:52.:31:51.

any player to play the kind of tennis that she does. But I can't

:31:52.:31:57.

see her changing. Don't hold your breath for the B game. It is not

:31:58.:32:02.

happening. A little pause now, I think. He's

:32:03.:32:37.

not a good tennis watcher, is he, Dad? No.

:32:38.:32:51.

For Giorgi, the problem is that the way her game style fits nicely into

:32:52.:32:59.

Muguruza, rigorous allows pace. She doesn't like changes of spin and

:33:00.:33:05.

flight and being pulled up the court and back, but that is not Giorgi 's

:33:06.:33:16.

game. She has got to cut out errors like that. A couple of doubles. A

:33:17.:33:26.

gross mistake there, and here are two break points for Muguruza.

:33:27.:33:43.

We should mention, to be fair, he has had an operation on his nose a

:33:44.:33:51.

couple of months ago, and he is still recovering. He hasn't gone

:33:52.:33:52.

overboard with the suncream! Not by much. She looks up to her

:33:53.:34:26.

box, they don't give her any signal. She still looking. She is now going

:34:27.:34:30.

to challenge. She took an awful long time to do it. Somebody finally

:34:31.:34:33.

signal from her box. If you are in the player box, you

:34:34.:34:49.

want to keep your head down on those ones, don't you?

:34:50.:35:37.

APPLAUSE Game for the Italian. It is still a

:35:38.:35:56.

mountain to climb. Muguruza proved in Paris that she is the real deal.

:35:57.:36:00.

Possibly the next number one in the world? It is highly likely, isn't

:36:01.:36:07.

it? She is a player who is not only capable but there's lots of room for

:36:08.:36:09.

manoeuvre in terms of drawing her game. She is uncomfortable with the

:36:10.:36:17.

low balls and the second serve as a work in progress, but she embraces

:36:18.:36:21.

it. She loves people. She wants to be number one. Which went to the

:36:22.:36:27.

Paris final she said, no one with members the runner up. She wants it.

:36:28.:36:30.

And that is half the battle. She is not afraid of being number one.

:36:31.:36:47.

She stayed in the same hotel and the morning after, everyone was coming

:36:48.:36:58.

up to her and saying well done, and she was teeming at everyone and had

:36:59.:37:01.

time for everyone. -- beaming at. I didn't see the kitchen sink being

:37:02.:37:45.

thrown across there, but it might have been. It might have been the

:37:46.:37:56.

freezer! Nothing is held back. The only uplift where she can improve it

:37:57.:37:59.

is to up her intensity. APPLAUSE

:38:00.:38:36.

Smartly done. Just watch her finish this point. Early preparation really

:38:37.:38:44.

precise. Remind you of anyone? We're having to leave this match on

:38:45.:40:27.

BBC One. We are coming to the end of our transmission. If you want to

:40:28.:40:31.

continue watching, it is on the Red Button. Coverage continues on the

:40:32.:40:36.

Red Button as Muguruza holds serve at 1-1 in the second set. The tennis

:40:37.:40:40.

continues on BBC Two and at the moment watching Milos Raonic, who

:40:41.:40:44.

has taken the first set from Pablo Carreno Busta. Doing very well out

:40:45.:40:51.

on number to court. Just before we go, rounding up some of the key

:40:52.:40:54.

results from the opening day of the Championships. The defending

:40:55.:40:58.

champion was back on Centre Court, back on form with a straight sets

:40:59.:41:01.

victory over Britain 's James Ward. He romped through the first set and

:41:02.:41:10.

was a battle, 7-6, 6-4, but Novak Djokovic extends is winning streak

:41:11.:41:14.

in Grand Slam is the 29th. He is the man to beat right now. David Ferrer

:41:15.:41:21.

didn't take long. The only lost four games against Dudi Sela of Israel.

:41:22.:41:32.

And this appointment for Alex Ward who had a wildcard into the boot

:41:33.:41:39.

draw. He met the number 11 seed, David Gotham. He went out in

:41:40.:41:46.

straight sets. And this is a real battle that has been taking place on

:41:47.:41:51.

Court number five, three others at 22 minutes. That was his 33rd ace of

:41:52.:41:56.

the match, Sam Querrey going through against Lukas Rosol. Venus Williams

:41:57.:42:06.

is thrown straight sets over Donna Vekic operation, 7-6, 6-4. She had

:42:07.:42:14.

to dig deep towards the end of those sets, but Venus Williams is through

:42:15.:42:20.

to the second round. So, it is time for us to say goodbye on BBC One,

:42:21.:42:24.

but we have 20 of tennis to come on day one of the Championships. Roger

:42:25.:42:28.

Federer will be on Centre Court later. Britain 's Laura Robson will

:42:29.:42:34.

take on Angelique Kerber on Court Number One. Lots to look forward to

:42:35.:42:40.

in the sunshine. Join us for more tennis over on BBC Two. Goodbye.
