Welcome to Wimbledon. Welcome back if you were watching on BBC One. It

:00:48.:00:54.

is Dave three of the Championships and we will focus on Centre Court

:00:55.:00:59.

because both British number ones will be there. Joe Anaconda is about

:01:00.:01:03.

to walk out and Andy Murray will be second on. Lots of stars on many of

:01:04.:01:12.

show courts. Jo Konta is just about to walk out to pre-Donna Vekic who

:01:13.:01:18.

Peter Reid a few weeks ago. Dustin Brown is a talented extrovert. And

:01:19.:01:23.

Rafael Nadal against Donald Young, Battle of the left-handers. Venus

:01:24.:01:37.

Williams will be in action later. And Simona Halep is up against the

:01:38.:01:44.

conqueror of Laura Robson, Beatriz Haddad Maia. We will also keep an

:01:45.:01:48.

eye on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Marin Cilic is still looking tender.

:01:49.:01:57.

One result to bring new and great news for Heather Watson. She looks

:01:58.:02:05.

to be back in her best form. Defeating Anastasija Sevastova of

:02:06.:02:15.

Lithuania. This is a player who put a big names in the past and cooling

:02:16.:02:20.

Jo Konta. That really is a wonderful performance from Heather. She is

:02:21.:02:28.

going to be racing back of the world rankings. She is 102 at the moment

:02:29.:02:33.

but she deserves to be in the top 20 at the least. Well done to Heather.

:02:34.:02:44.

So much to look forward to today. You can follow all the action on the

:02:45.:02:51.

BBC sport website, the red button, the BBC sport app, radio five live,

:02:52.:02:56.

the BBC News Channel. We want to hear from you as well. Please get in

:02:57.:03:07.

touch using this hash tag. We mentioned it Jo Konta on Centre

:03:08.:03:12.

Court. This is her first appearance here, her first-round match was

:03:13.:03:16.

played on Court number one against Donna Vekic. There will be a big

:03:17.:03:20.

cheer for Jo Konta, the British number one and a contender for the

:03:21.:03:22.

title. CHEERING What a wonderful couple of years for

:03:23.:03:42.

Jo Konta. She has made a big breakthrough and she is facing a

:03:43.:03:46.

difficult opponent, Donna Vekic, she beat her in Nottingham and she was a

:03:47.:03:52.

good junior. Jo Konta has got the big weapons, the ground shots and

:03:53.:03:57.

has served. This match is just about to get underway on Centre Court. Let

:03:58.:04:02.

us hear from Jo Konta, she has been speaking to Phil Jones.

:04:03.:04:09.

I was looking forward to playing my first round here, I got to play on

:04:10.:04:16.

Court one which is a beautiful court. I got to play against an

:04:17.:04:22.

opponent who I lost to not too long ago. I did not have any trouble. I

:04:23.:04:32.

hope that continues. An ace to win a match for Joe Anaconda and there is

:04:33.:04:35.

a smile for her as she moves through to the second row with little fuss.

:04:36.:04:40.

What is it like to be a British player at Wimbledon and you will be

:04:41.:04:45.

on Centre Court as long as you progress, I imagine, what is it like

:04:46.:04:52.

for you to play? I think with most players, the longer you are involved

:04:53.:04:57.

in an event, the more you find your footing on the court. Whatever court

:04:58.:05:02.

I will be scheduled on to play, you're still part of Wimbledon and

:05:03.:05:07.

part of this magnificent event. I am definitely going to do my best to

:05:08.:05:10.

try to stay here for a full fortnight. Importantly I will try to

:05:11.:05:16.

compete and enjoy each match. This is my home Grand Slam. It is

:05:17.:05:21.

something I am very proud of and very excited about. When it comes to

:05:22.:05:25.

this part of the season I want to be involved in it as long as I can, to

:05:26.:05:30.

feed off that home crowd. It seems you are peaking at the right time,

:05:31.:05:37.

is that right to say? It is sometimes hard to see if you are

:05:38.:05:42.

peaking or not. I am going into match looking to compete the best

:05:43.:05:48.

that can. We know that the standard of women's tennis is very high. I

:05:49.:05:53.

know I will have a battle in every match. There is no better place to

:05:54.:06:02.

battle than at Wimbledon. SUE BARKER: We will be joining this

:06:03.:06:06.

Centre Court. There she is getting ready for her match against Donna

:06:07.:06:12.

Vekic. We be right back with this match. Let us show you what is

:06:13.:06:15.

happening elsewhere. Play is underway on all the show courts. On

:06:16.:06:22.

Court number three, Heather Watson will face the winner of this match.

:06:23.:06:26.

It looks like Victoria Azarenka, the lady who was reading her notes. She

:06:27.:06:31.

is not exceeded this year. She had our first child at the end of last

:06:32.:06:36.

year. She is up against the semifinalist from last year. That

:06:37.:06:42.

match is featured on the red button. On Court number one, it is Kei

:06:43.:06:46.

Nishikori the against Sergiy Stakhovsky. He is the player who put

:06:47.:06:51.

out Roger Federer in 2013. You can watch that match on the BBC

:06:52.:07:04.

sport website. And on Court two, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, so many people

:07:05.:07:08.

like to watch. He is the 12th seed. He is taking on the Battalion,

:07:09.:07:13.

Simone Bolelli. -- the Italian. It is on the BBC sport website. We will

:07:14.:07:19.

keep you up-to-date with the scores as they go along. Let us go straight

:07:20.:07:24.

back to Centre Court and join the commentators. Kim Clijsters

:07:25.:07:26.

alongside Sam Smith. COMMENTATOR: It is not a bad review.

:07:27.:07:38.

Welcome back to Wimbledon after a long absence. It has been a while.

:07:39.:07:44.

Some changes for due? Quite a few changes, especially in the player 's

:07:45.:07:55.

alia. That area. There is more space upstairs. The food has definitely

:07:56.:07:59.

been upgraded. It was good in the past but now there is more variety.

:08:00.:08:06.

The players are spoiled. I tell you what has changed, Britain now has

:08:07.:08:12.

one of the highest seeds in your Anaconda and a contender for the

:08:13.:08:18.

title. I'm sure you have kept your eye on her. You have players that

:08:19.:08:23.

you watch out for. What has impressed you about Jo over the last

:08:24.:08:28.

18 months? What has impressed me is the consistency that she had. She

:08:29.:08:35.

has really built up her confidence. She is somebody who works hard. She

:08:36.:08:44.

has disciplined. She was coached by Michael Cheng the past. There is a

:08:45.:08:46.

connection. You keep your eye on. It'll be interesting to see how she

:08:47.:09:01.

this match. APPLAUSE Both players walked out to a

:09:02.:09:05.

tremendous reception. It is a packed stadium and the Royal box.

:09:06.:10:07.

Konta won the toss and elected to serve. Of those kind of returns you

:10:08.:10:13.

can see why. This is the third meeting between these two. The first

:10:14.:10:17.

was last year on the American hard courts.

:10:18.:10:31.

It was Donna Vekic who got her revenge on the grass of not come in

:10:32.:10:38.

a few weeks ago. Raqqa the one that the first set comfortably and then

:10:39.:10:45.

lost to tapeworms, 7-6 and 7-5. -- lost to take sets.

:10:46.:11:31.

Donna Vekic had a tough opening match against Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

:11:32.:11:38.

There seems to be every letter of the alpha in that name. It took two

:11:39.:11:42.

hours to come through. Donna was very much a teenage

:11:43.:12:35.

sensation. Got to her first tour final at 16 under first title at 18.

:12:36.:12:40.

She was overwhelmed with all the expectation and hate around her.

:12:41.:12:46.

Back into the world's top 60 and playing some of the best tennis of

:12:47.:12:54.

her life. That was a very good hold. Good start for the Croatian number

:12:55.:13:03.

three. There is a Belgian connection with yourself, Kim, Ante Coric of

:13:04.:13:09.

Konta. That is the key in the quite. Her hitting partner in the red. Tell

:13:10.:13:17.

us about him, he was on tour with you for many years and what he will

:13:18.:13:22.

bring to the game of Jo. He was my hitting partner for the few years.

:13:23.:13:26.

He was a childhood friend and I trained with him when I was 10-12

:13:27.:13:32.

years old. He is not a very outspoken coach. He is not slowed.

:13:33.:13:37.

He is quiet and brings peace into your team and camp. On Court he is

:13:38.:13:43.

quiet. It brings calmness. There is another connection. My old

:13:44.:15:34.

coach helped to get her passport. That is two coaches that I have had

:15:35.:15:35.

that have helped. Both women safely on-board on this

:15:36.:15:56.

Centre Court match in the three. Both of them are five. Both are

:15:57.:16:35.

athletic. Like you can, her father was a goalkeeper, a professional

:16:36.:16:38.

footballer. Her mother was a very good hurdler. He played for the

:16:39.:16:45.

local team in the north of Croatia. Close to the Slovenian border.

:16:46.:18:06.

They have started off at quite a lick. They both look like they have

:18:07.:18:13.

settled into the match from the start. Donna, that shot was so deep

:18:14.:18:24.

and flat, it was difficult with the grip of Jo on the forehand to get it

:18:25.:18:26.

back in time. And very assured the game from this

:18:27.:18:46.

young Croatian. It is on serve in this opening set.

:18:47.:18:59.

You were very good, very young, got lots of press attention. Similar way

:19:00.:19:07.

to Donna but Donna did not handle it. How did you manage it all and

:19:08.:19:11.

how difficult is it? We say she could not cope with the expectations

:19:12.:19:16.

but how difficult is it to deal with the attention? It depends on your

:19:17.:19:20.

personality and depends on the people you have around. I never

:19:21.:19:26.

worked with the manager or management company. The distractions

:19:27.:19:30.

that come after you do well in a Grand Slam with sponsors and photo

:19:31.:19:36.

shoots, it was something that I never really enjoyed that. For many

:19:37.:19:45.

years, early on in my career, that was not apart I wanted to put energy

:19:46.:19:51.

into. It would've been helpful for me to stay focused on playing tennis

:19:52.:19:56.

and try to improve as a young tennis player gain experience.

:19:57.:20:51.

Jo opened up with a routine victory against the player from Chinese

:20:52.:21:35.

Taipei. Just drop four games. She was a player she lost two at the

:21:36.:21:37.

French Open just over one month ago. I think the tennis gods have been

:21:38.:21:58.

having some fun with Jo. In the second road, she must've looked at

:21:59.:22:02.

the draw and felt, I am playing Vekic who I lost to a couple of

:22:03.:22:07.

weeks ago. Big revenge. Those tennis gods can be nastier.

:22:08.:22:41.

When you play someone like Donna who likes to attack straight on with the

:22:42.:22:48.

return, you automatically put more pressure on your own service game.

:22:49.:22:51.

Trying to make a lot of first serves.

:22:52.:24:13.

Donna certainly knows her way around London extremely well. She won the

:24:14.:24:21.

under 12 nationals in Croatia after starting at six at a local tennis

:24:22.:24:26.

club. She realised she needed training in better facilities so off

:24:27.:24:31.

to England to train at Northwood, at the junior tennis initiative with

:24:32.:24:35.

David Felgate. He is a name who you might remember as he coached Tim

:24:36.:24:38.

Henman. She was there from 9-18. David Felgate also worked with CD

:24:39.:24:50.

release. Another Belgian. This is higher level from both

:24:51.:25:04.

women. Very positive start from Konta and it needed to be. Vekic has

:25:05.:25:07.

came out with real intent. Just a little miscue. Konta able to

:25:08.:25:54.

hold. You have known that Wim Fissette since juniors, is his first

:25:55.:26:00.

name short for anything? Is it short for Wimbledon? Maybe. It could be a

:26:01.:26:06.

new nickname for him. It is not short for anything. Keep it simple.

:26:07.:26:49.

Because they have played recently they know each other's game well,

:26:50.:26:54.

what to expect from the opponent and what to do. They have just kept

:26:55.:26:56.

going since then. His upper body is too close to the

:26:57.:27:37.

ball. She is not making enough space to let her arm flow through the

:27:38.:27:38.

shot. Superb from Konta. I love her

:27:39.:28:03.

footwork. Especially from where we are sitting. It is very nice to see

:28:04.:28:07.

the intensity from the return onwards. How low she is able to stay

:28:08.:28:11.

through the entire rally. Vekic is very aware that she did not

:28:12.:28:29.

get off to a good start after she played in the final in Nottingham

:28:30.:28:33.

and dropped the opening set very easily. She has started very well

:28:34.:28:34.

here. Wonderful control from the young

:28:35.:29:42.

Croatian. It remains on serve here in this opening set.

:29:43.:29:53.

How difficult is it when you have played somebody a pew weeks ago and

:29:54.:30:02.

you come into a match like this and you play them so soon, how do you

:30:03.:30:05.

keep all the memories from that match out of your head? It works

:30:06.:30:13.

both ways. It can be easy at times because you remember the things that

:30:14.:30:19.

went wrong or that you did well. You don't have to specifically go back

:30:20.:30:23.

and watch videos of your opponent because you feel it. You know what

:30:24.:30:27.

it felt like when you played them. I guess it also depends on whether you

:30:28.:30:34.

won or lost. For Donna, having won that match, it would have given her

:30:35.:30:38.

confidence, more belief to step out here today and to really believed in

:30:39.:30:46.

her chances. For Donna, that a win is maybe more of an advantage today.

:30:47.:30:52.

It is certainly a warm one, I hope everyone is taking an plenty of

:30:53.:30:58.

water or a few other beverages which I think are available!

:30:59.:31:36.

You'll see plenty of looks from Dahmer to her player box. A full

:31:37.:31:43.

team in there, including good friend Stan Wawrinka. -- from Donna. I

:31:44.:31:55.

think she'd prefer being known for her tennis rather than her

:31:56.:31:58.

boyfriend. I remember watching a match occurs in Rome, I think she

:31:59.:32:03.

played about three and half hours, he stayed right until the end. He is

:32:04.:32:11.

a good lad, Stan. And I have seen her at the French Open, going

:32:12.:32:15.

through all his matches. It works both ways. You know what that is

:32:16.:32:21.

like, or those years with Lleyton Yes, I have seen a lot of five set

:32:22.:32:26.

matches. But it helps. They are both playing very good

:32:27.:33:30.

tennis. Vekic has come out here with real

:33:31.:33:43.

belief and intent from that win a couple of weeks ago in Nottingham,

:33:44.:33:45.

the warm up events for Wimbledon. Great finish to the game. Another

:33:46.:35:49.

tough service hold for Britain's Johanna Konta.

:35:50.:36:22.

A real sort of flexibility about Donna Vekic. I don't know if that's

:36:23.:36:30.

anything to do with in her early life she did a lot of gymnastics,

:36:31.:36:34.

which I think is good preparation for tennis. You used to do the

:36:35.:36:39.

splits occasionally? Yes, my mother was a gymnast. She used to stretch

:36:40.:36:41.

us out a lot! I always said, I had the strength in

:36:42.:36:54.

my legs from my dad because he was a footballer and my flexibility from

:36:55.:36:57.

my mother, because she was a gymnast.

:36:58.:37:27.

Konte, a smart move there. Just creeping into the shade at the back

:37:28.:37:52.

of the court. It is a hot one out there. I think we might have a top

:37:53.:37:56.

of 27 degrees today, and they are really going for it out here.

:37:57.:38:14.

We can do heat here, you know, Kim. It's unusual...

:38:15.:39:02.

I like how she stepped in after a big serve like that. She stays on

:39:03.:39:09.

the court after she lands and it looks like she knows there is a

:39:10.:39:11.

shorter ball coming. She is not going to challenge.

:39:12.:39:40.

Margins vary tight. Still on serve, Vekic leading 4-3.

:39:41.:39:50.

It is super out there, here this afternoon, and also in the women's

:39:51.:39:58.

game particularly since you have been away, Kim. But taking a look at

:39:59.:40:02.

this Vekic forehand, you need a really good weapon now, don't you?

:40:03.:40:07.

Can you talk us why through why this is such a good shot? Her shots

:40:08.:40:13.

automatically are flat and had. I think on grass that is a great

:40:14.:40:18.

combination to have and makes it very tough for your opponent. I'm

:40:19.:40:23.

actually surprised about the way she's moving, she seems to be

:40:24.:40:27.

moving, to me, better I expected her to move. But her forehand

:40:28.:40:33.

naturally... A lot of girls prefer to hit their backhand, feel a bit

:40:34.:40:39.

more comfortable hitting their backhand, but I think Donna, she's

:40:40.:40:43.

really going for her shots. Like we said before, I think that match in

:40:44.:40:47.

Nottingham they played really, helped her to know where her great

:40:48.:40:52.

game plan should be a and to know she needs to play the best of tennis

:40:53.:41:00.

to try and beat Johanna here today. Speaking of gymnastics, you might

:41:01.:41:02.

have got a bit of a glimpse of one of the greats, Nadia.

:41:03.:41:09.

There she is. First gymnast ever to score a perfect ten. It was a long

:41:10.:41:45.

time ago now, 1976, 41 years ago, multiple Olympic gold medallist and

:41:46.:41:48.

a big friend of Simona Halep, was playing later on Court Number One.

:41:49.:42:02.

UMPIRE: Miss Konte challenging the ball. The ball was called out. 12

:42:03.:42:14.

Hawk-Eye cameras positioned around this Court, beaming down onto the

:42:15.:42:15.

mark. UMPIRE: The call stands. Donna

:42:16.:42:27.

looking very relieved. We need the technology. So, Konte in a little

:42:28.:42:34.

spot here on serve for the first time.

:42:35.:42:55.

It's the pressure of the return Donna puts you under. 0-30, an

:42:56.:43:08.

important point to win. The nerds get there a little bit. First break

:43:09.:43:15.

points on the counterpoint. -- the nerves get there a little bit.

:43:16.:43:21.

That was a scary moment if you are a Konte fan. Really held her ground

:43:22.:43:42.

well there. There is the break. Came after just

:43:43.:44:24.

34 minutes. Vekic now in the driving seat of this opening set.

:44:25.:45:35.

When you serve for the first set in a game like this, it was nice to win

:45:36.:45:41.

that first game, to give yourself a little bit of a lead.

:45:42.:46:11.

That a tough serve to read. Why? It doesn't change much, whether she

:46:12.:46:25.

goes out wide or down the T, almost like Lindsay Davenport when she used

:46:26.:46:30.

to serve. It was a very tough serve to read.

:46:31.:46:34.

She will be very happy with that comparison right now, she'd be

:46:35.:46:41.

delighted to take this first set. She has got two chances to do so.

:46:42.:47:11.

It really has been a helter-skelter opening set of tennis. The pace they

:47:12.:47:18.

started off with, from the first ball. When the tempo is so high,

:47:19.:47:24.

it's sometimes easy just to stay in that crosscourt rally and keep going

:47:25.:47:27.

and going, but it's important not to do that, to try and mix it up and

:47:28.:47:31.

move your opponent around. Especially Donna, because it's not

:47:32.:47:36.

like she is the best move out there. -- mover out there.

:47:37.:47:51.

Two set point saved by this very disciplined 26-year-old, meticulous

:47:52.:48:00.

in her preparation. Seemingly dealing with all the attention and

:48:01.:48:04.

eyes on her over this fortnight, particularly in the lead up. Such a

:48:05.:48:07.

great run at Eastbourne last week. Serving out for the set in this kind

:48:08.:48:40.

of arena is never plain sailing. Konte with a chance to rake back. --

:48:41.:48:48.

break back. Konte is also the player who is not going to give you

:48:49.:48:51.

anything for free, you are going to have to win your points. She so

:48:52.:48:58.

consistent. At closing out a set or a Mac, makes it even harder. -- or a

:48:59.:49:10.

Mac. -- match. Challenging the call on the left, centreline, the ball

:49:11.:49:15.

was called out. Too many players like to challenge first and second

:49:16.:49:20.

serves, they feel it breaks up their rhythm. She must have thought it was

:49:21.:49:24.

in, she was wrong. You are allowed three incorrect challenges a set and

:49:25.:49:28.

you get an extra one if it goes into a tie-break. Oh, dear! I think she

:49:29.:49:31.

was hoping with that first one. Jo had a couple break points in the

:49:32.:49:46.

beginning of the match and another one here.

:49:47.:49:52.

And it is an immediate break back. Konte stays alive in this vital

:49:53.:49:59.

opening set. Kim, she has had the most amazing 18

:50:00.:50:20.

months. Winning in Sydney at the start of the year, the beginning of

:50:21.:50:25.

the Australian summer, and a tournament you have won, Miami,

:50:26.:50:29.

which is a huge event on the tour. Inside the top ten and looking like

:50:30.:50:35.

she belonged there. But a couple of years ago she was 150 in the wild,

:50:36.:50:39.

in the satellites. Have you spoken to her about this transformation?

:50:40.:50:46.

Not really, but you can just see the confidence building over the last 18

:50:47.:50:51.

months, like you said. She knows that she belongs up there. Like I

:50:52.:50:58.

said, she's very disciplined. She works extremely hard and it shows.

:50:59.:51:02.

She really knows what her game is supposed to be out there. That is

:51:03.:51:05.

something that is important. Players are ready. Quiet please,

:51:06.:51:36.

thank you. Konte, serving to stay in this

:51:37.:51:38.

opening set. It takes a lot to shake Jo these

:51:39.:52:32.

days, 30 matches won on the tour and only halfway through the year. Not

:52:33.:52:38.

at the top of the rankings for matches won, but not far off.

:52:39.:52:49.

She really raised her level. When she was set point down, she really

:52:50.:53:00.

took it to Donna Vekic and was even a little more aggressive, I thought.

:53:01.:53:05.

She is full of confidence coming off that wonderful week in Eastbourne,

:53:06.:53:11.

where she beat Jelena Ostapenko and then the world number one, Angelique

:53:12.:53:12.

Kerber. A couple of aces in the game. A very

:53:13.:53:24.

straightforward hold and Konte levels up in this opening set.

:53:25.:53:33.

SUE BARKER: We are living Centre Court on BBC Two. If you want to

:53:34.:53:38.

continue watching this match, it is now on BBC One. If you want to

:53:39.:53:42.

continue watching Joe Konte, this match is now on BBC One.

:53:43.:53:49.

Here on BBC Two, we will be heading over to Court number three, to see

:53:50.:53:53.

another British player in action, Aljaz Bedene, in that match is just

:53:54.:54:01.

underway. Early stages of the match in the first set, that is where we

:54:02.:54:05.

will be joining in just a moment. Before we do that, let's round up

:54:06.:54:14.

some news from earlier today. Great news for Britain with Heather

:54:15.:54:20.

Watson, she has come through against the Latvian, the 18th seed. Heather

:54:21.:54:27.

6-0, 6-4. Ranked outside the top 100, that is certainly going to

:54:28.:54:31.

change when the rankings are brought out after the Championships. Really

:54:32.:54:37.

a resurgent Heather Watson, now working with Colin, which has made a

:54:38.:54:40.

big impression. She looks back to her best and back into the third

:54:41.:54:43.

round for the third time. Let's hear what she had to say after she left

:54:44.:54:46.

the court. Congratulations, an incredible start

:54:47.:54:55.

to the Mac, you came out with such intensity. You spoke the other day

:54:56.:54:58.

and said you knew she was going to be a threat. Were you surprised at

:54:59.:55:03.

how you both started? Yeah, I felt very good at the

:55:04.:55:10.

beginning of the match. Very on it and relaxed, more relaxed than I was

:55:11.:55:15.

in my first match. I obviously, I know how she plays, she's a great

:55:16.:55:19.

player and I was expecting her to be playing her best, so I was prepared

:55:20.:55:25.

that. Yeah, she started to step up in the second set, which I knew she

:55:26.:55:29.

would, but I was able to keep my cool and just stick with her.

:55:30.:55:34.

The intensity you showed, the mental strength you showed just to keep

:55:35.:55:37.

going and not letting anything get on top of you, even when she did

:55:38.:55:42.

come back, how important is that for everything Wimbledon throws at you?

:55:43.:55:46.

It is very important, yeah. She's a great player and I have to expect

:55:47.:55:50.

that she's going to raise her level after that first set and try

:55:51.:55:58.

something new. So it's just, I have to do remain calm and just adjust my

:55:59.:56:00.

game. In terms of your own performance,

:56:01.:56:04.

what's pleasing with you with how you are playing out there, you are

:56:05.:56:07.

covering the grass so well. Just everything really. I feel like

:56:08.:56:11.

I'm seeing the ball very big and moving well, which is very important

:56:12.:56:16.

for the grass. I hit a few double faults today, but all in all I feel

:56:17.:56:20.

like I am serving well. As Aitor Karanka took the first set, they

:56:21.:56:25.

only played two matches by the time you took your Mac. Do you have a

:56:26.:56:29.

preference on who you play? I have no idea. Whoever wins, it's a very,

:56:30.:56:37.

very tough match. Taking this one match at a time question yes, I have

:56:38.:56:41.

no idea what the draw is. OK, congratulations.

:56:42.:56:46.

That is the best way to do it. Victoria Azarenka won the second set

:56:47.:56:54.

as well to put out the 15th seed. Victoria Azarenka, former world

:56:55.:56:57.

number one, looks to be getting back to her best as well. It is Heather

:56:58.:57:01.

Watson against Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

:57:02.:57:05.

And one other result to bring you, the eighth seed, has beaten the big

:57:06.:57:17.

hitter from the United States, Jennifer Brady. Cibulkova Only just

:57:18.:57:25.

over five or two but she packs a punch. She's through to the next

:57:26.:57:26.

round at Wimbledon once again. And she is happy! Well done. One of

:57:27.:57:40.

the popular players on the tour. This is Andy Murray at earlier

:57:41.:57:45.

today, we were watching him practice, going through with Matt

:57:46.:57:48.

Little all those training exercises he does, and then a warm up as well.

:57:49.:57:53.

There was a limp Berrigan, which was a bit of a worrying sight for all of

:57:54.:57:58.

us watching Andy Murray. -- a limp again. He will need to be at his

:57:59.:58:01.

best against Dustin Brown. Ivan Lendl looking on. Dustin Brown loves

:58:02.:58:06.

playing on the grass courts and he loves to be on the big Show court.

:58:07.:58:10.

It could be a tricky one for Andy Murray. That is second on Centre

:58:11.:58:11.

Court today. And there are other matches being

:58:12.:58:20.

played at the moment. This matches our feature on the red button,

:58:21.:58:25.

another of the great entertainers, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the 12th seed. He

:58:26.:58:29.

is a set up and it is on serve in the second against Bolelli. K

:58:30.:58:39.

Nishikori has taken the opening set against Sergiy Stakhovsky. He put up

:58:40.:58:45.

Federer in 2013. You can follow that much on the BBC sport website.

:58:46.:58:53.

So, we have Johanna Konta on Centre Court on BBC One, and here on BBC

:58:54.:58:57.

Two we are going to concentrate on Aljaz Bedene of Great Britain. As

:58:58.:59:01.

you can see it is 3-3 in the opening set. Let's join Jamie Baker and John

:59:02.:59:10.

Inverdale this -- for this one. COMMENTATOR: Middleweight battle

:59:11.:59:15.

between two of the lightest men on court. That was a brilliant winner

:59:16.:59:21.

from Dzumhur. Both of these guys tipping the scales at just 70

:59:22.:59:26.

kilograms. And an interesting subplot to this match is that they

:59:27.:59:30.

are the best of friends off court. And in the first round Dzumhur

:59:31.:59:37.

didn't have any kit to play in here at Wimbledon somehow. So Bedene lent

:59:38.:59:47.

him his. And 48 hours later they are playing each other. And before you

:59:48.:59:54.

ask we don't actually know if Dzumhur has brought his own kit or

:59:55.:00:02.

is using bed's again. 3-3, early break of serve for the Brit and then

:00:03.:00:03.

hit back rapidly. Is it easier or is it almost

:00:04.:00:47.

impossible to play your best mate? It can be difficult. It can feel

:00:48.:00:52.

almost like a practice. If you are good friends then you will have

:00:53.:00:55.

practised a lot together. Then the second round at Wimbledon, one of

:00:56.:00:57.

the biggest matches of your career. Third place from Bedene in this

:00:58.:01:05.

match. The British number three got here

:01:06.:01:15.

because of that victory over Ivo Karlovic in the first round. Ivo

:01:16.:01:26.

Karlovic served 44 aces. It was even Stephens. And then matter to hit two

:01:27.:01:34.

of the best shots he has hit in his life, bang, bang, that was the game

:01:35.:01:38.

in the end. It must've given him an enormous boost in confidence going

:01:39.:01:44.

into this match. The end of that match was almost like a dream. It is

:01:45.:01:47.

how you would want to finish any match. We are just looking at Aljaz

:01:48.:01:56.

Bedene's connections. That this is coach, Nick. And just behind is the

:01:57.:02:08.

team of Damir Dzumhur. Enjoying the Wimbledon son. The Bosnian came

:02:09.:02:14.

through his first match with the loss of just four games. He is not a

:02:15.:02:19.

mug on the surface. His first port of call is not the net. He will stay

:02:20.:02:24.

at the baseline for as long as it takes. We have seen some variety

:02:25.:02:30.

from, some drop shots. The first few were not successful but he has shown

:02:31.:02:31.

he has got lots of good fuel. He is just five. That has to make

:02:32.:02:53.

him a contender for the shortest player. -- five feet, nine inches

:02:54.:03:12.

tall. That is a great shot from Bedene. I am not sure what Dzumhur

:03:13.:03:19.

is aggravated about. There was something he was not happy with.

:03:20.:03:24.

That approach shot was deep enough but not quite accurate into the

:03:25.:03:25.

corner. That is a beautiful shot. This

:03:26.:03:55.

backhand pass is the match that won him -- is the shot that won him the

:03:56.:03:56.

match against Ivo Karlovic. If you are an occasional tennis pure

:03:57.:04:18.

but love Wimbledon, you might not be aware of the radical intrigue

:04:19.:04:26.

surrounding Aljaz Bedene. -- political. He is Slovenian by birth

:04:27.:04:32.

but has British nationality, he got that more than a couple of years

:04:33.:04:37.

ago. And he has been trying ever since to become eligible to play for

:04:38.:04:39.

Great Britain in the Davis Cup. He has lived here for over one

:04:40.:05:15.

decade now. When the doctor, he does feel he has been given a bad deal by

:05:16.:05:19.

the International tennis Federation. He is not able to represent Great

:05:20.:05:23.

Britain at the moment. Great Britain would not mind having him in the

:05:24.:05:28.

team with a backhand like that. Three in this game. A second break

:05:29.:05:29.

of serve. You must have played with him? I

:05:30.:05:41.

have practised with him a lot. I came up against them for the first

:05:42.:05:46.

time in Slovenia at the futures tournament on clay when I was a

:05:47.:05:47.

teenager. Here are out of it now, you can give

:05:48.:06:08.

an honest answer, should he be eligible to play for Great Britain?

:06:09.:06:14.

That is a tough question. In my view, personally, no. I can totally

:06:15.:06:20.

understand why he feels aggrieved by what has happened. Without going

:06:21.:06:33.

into the details, he submitted his application before the ITF decided

:06:34.:06:37.

to change the rules. They changed the rules but then said he was no

:06:38.:06:41.

longer eligible. That is the basis of his appeal.

:06:42.:07:09.

That was just wide from Bedene. Dzumhur has had some nice touches

:07:10.:07:19.

around the net. To finish this, do you think that the British tennis

:07:20.:07:23.

community would be happy to see him playing for Great Britain? No

:07:24.:07:30.

question, delighted. My view is that he had represented Slovenia as a

:07:31.:07:40.

senior tennis player. That is where my opinion comes in. If it had been

:07:41.:07:44.

junior tennis, that is a different story. It was senior tennis so I can

:07:45.:07:48.

see why the rules have gone that way. He is also one of the nicest,

:07:49.:07:53.

most respectable professional men on the tour. You can see from the level

:07:54.:07:57.

of his tennis he would be an amazing asset to the team.

:07:58.:08:02.

That is the first set for the British number three. He has started

:08:03.:08:10.

well and then had the depth of the next few games but getting better as

:08:11.:08:12.

the set went on. Four aces from Bedene in that first

:08:13.:08:32.

set. He really is very lean. He would not think he would be one of

:08:33.:08:36.

the biggest servers on the team. It is not just about speed, it is

:08:37.:08:42.

placement. Anybody who has served 20 odd aces any grand slam tennis match

:08:43.:08:49.

has to be feared. He is very consistent with the service action.

:08:50.:08:53.

He has a fast arm. He does that need to force every single serve and that

:08:54.:08:57.

is why we see the accuracy, he is not hitting every single serve at

:08:58.:09:04.

100%. This is the facts and figures, for what it is worth, from the point

:09:05.:09:08.

of view of the media, you were talking about being one of the

:09:09.:09:12.

nicest guys and usually respectful, he is a great guy to deal with from

:09:13.:09:17.

the media's point of view. He always gives more than you expect, he is

:09:18.:09:22.

honest and will look you in the eye. He is one of those players that you

:09:23.:09:28.

hope continues his upwards journey. I would tell him to go out of the

:09:29.:09:32.

stadium because you do not know what is tennis. Whether it is a break

:09:33.:09:39.

point or whatever. The first point it is an unbelievable mistake from

:09:40.:09:46.

my side. Great point for what? What we can take from that which is what

:09:47.:09:54.

Dzumhur was getting agitated about, it was something in the Bedene box,

:09:55.:10:00.

he thinks, applauded the fact that he, Dzumhur, played a bad first

:10:01.:10:05.

point in that game. He feels that if anybody had done something like that

:10:06.:10:09.

in his box he would be disgraced and it is not in the etiquette of the

:10:10.:10:14.

sport. Overreacting? These are the types of things that can boil over

:10:15.:10:16.

when you know everybody so well. I do remember the first day of the

:10:17.:10:44.

tennis in the Olympics in Beijing's...

:10:45.:10:55.

Irrespective of who won the point, the crowd who were not tennis saddy

:10:56.:11:03.

were applauding double faults and the umpire having to explain to the

:11:04.:11:06.

code that you are not supposed to do that. -- to the audience. That is a

:11:07.:11:16.

glorious shot and that was an even better one. Well played, Aljaz

:11:17.:11:21.

Bedene. I was just about to see how good a drop shot this was. Look how

:11:22.:11:26.

quickly Bedene gets up to this ball. There is still hate on it which

:11:27.:11:30.

allows him to get the pace onto the shot across the court.

:11:31.:11:46.

He might not spend much time on the tour in the upper half of the court

:11:47.:11:53.

but he is a very deft player when the need arises.

:11:54.:12:08.

Any of you listening who have been involved in junior tennis, you will

:12:09.:12:16.

know the scourge of people applauding. And how it really annoys

:12:17.:12:20.

you. That is a good opening break from

:12:21.:12:42.

the point of view of Bedene. That was not a great shot, the last

:12:43.:12:59.

one. Slightly surprised by the performance of Dzumhur so far. I was

:13:00.:13:04.

expecting him to be more consistent. I appreciate that the drop shots and

:13:05.:13:09.

on the touch are part of his game. Shot selection is something that has

:13:10.:13:13.

not been as sharp as it normally was. That last shot, there was no

:13:14.:13:17.

speed on the ball and it is difficult to execute a drop shot

:13:18.:13:22.

when there is no speed on the ball. He is still having a conversation

:13:23.:13:26.

with his box or at least with somebody. It is with somebody who he

:13:27.:13:30.

feels have said something they should not have said that the wrong

:13:31.:13:34.

time. He needs to focus on the game because he is one set and one break

:13:35.:13:36.

down after barely half an hour. Bedene, I think he felt the ball was

:13:37.:14:02.

long, but he had thought about it and continued the rally.

:14:03.:14:37.

Perhaps this is the shot that will get Dzumhur back into the match. A

:14:38.:14:43.

couple of times he has taken a backhand down the line early, he has

:14:44.:14:45.

had success with that. It is a very different game to the

:14:46.:15:23.

one that Bedene played a few days ago. There was one rally that was 11

:15:24.:15:29.

shots against Ivo Karlovic. The rest were very quick.

:15:30.:15:52.

Still two break back points for the Bosnian.

:15:53.:16:07.

What are you supposed to do? It is no good just standing there, Dzumhur

:16:08.:16:16.

ran off into the tram lines before... It is all about timing. If

:16:17.:16:27.

you do what he did then you give your opponent an open goal.

:16:28.:16:41.

He has broken back. Bedene saw the opportunity down the line but the

:16:42.:16:54.

ball drifted just wide. As in the first set, an early break for the

:16:55.:16:58.

British player. And an immediate break back from the Bosnian.

:16:59.:17:23.

Another forehand just drifting wide of the sideline.

:17:24.:17:48.

Lovely big forehand from the Bosnian that created that opportunity. This

:17:49.:17:56.

is one of the matches where you think that Aljaz Bedene should be

:17:57.:18:00.

thinking he is in complete control but somehow he is not and it is

:18:01.:18:01.

irritating. And as a consequence of this, he's

:18:02.:18:16.

not focused on the ball in hand. Players of a certain temperament,

:18:17.:18:23.

you are absolutely right. He almost did not blink when he lost serve

:18:24.:18:25.

because he is so level-headed. This is a similar pattern to the

:18:26.:18:48.

first set. Good to get the early break but not able to drive home the

:18:49.:18:52.

momentum straightaway, he needed a second chance.

:18:53.:19:02.

It is all fine margins. Two balls into the tape and Bedene finds

:19:03.:19:18.

himself behind in the second set. When you are of the physical stature

:19:19.:19:23.

that the Bosnian is, is there in the modern game a limit? You are

:19:24.:19:30.

substantially bigger than he is, is very finite point in the men's game

:19:31.:19:34.

nowadays beyond which you cannot play? In terms of you hate? In terms

:19:35.:19:40.

of how far up the rankings you can get. I am sure you can always inject

:19:41.:19:47.

yourself with something and go once it. I was thinking of the two

:19:48.:19:55.

Belgian players. Olivier Rockers got into the top 20. He is playing Kei

:19:56.:20:04.

Nishikori. He's not the biggest player. There is no question, with a

:20:05.:20:09.

certain height and frame, there definitely comes an advantage. That

:20:10.:20:14.

is why the vast crop of players are of that stature. If you are slightly

:20:15.:20:19.

smaller then you have something else to make up for it. That might be

:20:20.:20:26.

your mentality. Just be the fiercest of fierce competitors. Which Bedene

:20:27.:20:34.

clearly is. He has had a fantastic run this year. Three challenger

:20:35.:20:43.

tournaments. And winning this year for him has been a habit.

:20:44.:21:12.

And Dzumhur has been upping the aggression in the last ten minutes.

:21:13.:21:46.

If he had seen the first two drop shots that the Bosnian attempted,

:21:47.:21:53.

you would not believe he would play a shot with such touch and skill as

:21:54.:21:58.

that. He has got his eye in when it comes to the drop shot at the

:21:59.:21:59.

moment. Bedene lines up a potential winner

:22:00.:22:37.

and he just miscalculates. Anything you can do... The power of

:22:38.:23:15.

the skies, that this is first drop shot of the match. Dzumhur is good

:23:16.:23:22.

around the court but no way of reading that. By that point you know

:23:23.:23:30.

it is too late. This is a big game. A chance to square things but he

:23:31.:23:33.

does not want to get broken here, the British number three. He needs

:23:34.:23:39.

some more big serves like that. Currently ranked 58 in the world,

:23:40.:23:57.

Aljaz Bedene, he has been as high as 55. He had a dip that forced him to

:23:58.:24:08.

play on the Challenger tour and that is when he has came back up the

:24:09.:24:12.

rankings. Three challenger wins and one final on the tour as well. When

:24:13.:24:18.

it comes to tight matches, if this was a tight match in 2-3 matches, he

:24:19.:24:23.

would fancy his chances because he has been there so often.

:24:24.:24:28.

He does not want to make mistakes like that.

:24:29.:25:00.

You felt he had got himself back into that match at deuce. A couple

:25:01.:25:09.

of loose shots, especially that shot at deuce, suddenly he is broken and

:25:10.:25:14.

behind. That is a good point about how many matches Bedene has won this

:25:15.:25:23.

year. At one tournaments in a row. At any level you cannot

:25:24.:25:25.

underestimate what that does for your confidence. Especially in the

:25:26.:25:29.

second set, some of the errors we have seen in the last five minutes,

:25:30.:25:31.

they are surprising. That was a good slice backhand from

:25:32.:26:02.

Bedene. That forced Dzumhur into a position we are could not do

:26:03.:26:06.

anything with the ball. Whatever in the world you are watching, looking

:26:07.:26:11.

at the pristine green court and the blue sky, wondering about how warm

:26:12.:26:15.

it is today. You just have to look at the crowd who are using the

:26:16.:26:22.

programmes and anything as fans. We head towards 2pm in the afternoon.

:26:23.:26:26.

It is a really warm summers day here.

:26:27.:26:50.

That ball was kept very loud. He uses the slice well. It is a

:26:51.:27:00.

floating shot to get back into the point. There were some extra

:27:01.:27:03.

aggression through that contact and it skidded through the court.

:27:04.:27:19.

Dzumhur is one of those players who insists on playing the next point

:27:20.:27:25.

with the same ball if he won the previous point with it.

:27:26.:27:42.

There is that variety again. It was not the best drop shot but it is

:27:43.:27:49.

changing things up. It is not allowing Bedene to get comfortable

:27:50.:27:56.

and to set the baseline. That backhand down the line again. Half a

:27:57.:27:59.

dozen of those. SUE BARKER: Let us update you on

:28:00.:28:18.

what is happening elsewhere. On Centre Court, Jo Konta taking the

:28:19.:28:25.

first set over Donna Vekic. 7-4. Saving two set points. She is such a

:28:26.:28:30.

tough competitor, she came back to take the opening set on the

:28:31.:28:34.

tie-break. Well done to the British number one. That happened a few

:28:35.:28:38.

moments ago. She has dropped serve in the opening game of the second

:28:39.:28:43.

set. This is Donna Vekic with the point to go 2-0 up. That matches on

:28:44.:28:46.

Centre Court and is on BBC One. This is the red button feature

:28:47.:29:01.

match. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, twice a semifinalist, seeded 12. He is 2-0

:29:02.:29:07.

up against Simone Giannelli from Italy, who is a qualifier. On Court

:29:08.:29:12.

number one, Kei Nishikori, seeded number nine.

:29:13.:29:25.

Let us stay to see if Sergiy Stakhovsky gets a double break. He

:29:26.:29:33.

was a top 50 player. He defeated Federer here at the Championships.

:29:34.:29:36.

That is one way to save a break point. You can follow that match on

:29:37.:29:41.

the red button and on the BBC sport website. If you have been watching

:29:42.:29:46.

around the courts and watching Aljaz Bedene and Damir Dzumhur. There are

:29:47.:29:52.

lots of flies. They are flying ants. In the newspaper it is official

:29:53.:29:57.

flank and day. It is when the new Queen leaves a nest and starts a new

:29:58.:30:02.

colony. The thing that I didn't think I would say on BBC television.

:30:03.:30:07.

Apparently they are all around Wimbledon. Look at that. I cannot

:30:08.:30:12.

wait to go down to centre Court at the end of the Johanna Conn the

:30:13.:30:17.

match. They are all over the Championships. You can see the

:30:18.:30:20.

players on Court three struggling as well. Back the match.

:30:21.:30:30.

COMMENTATOR: That's a double fault that Ben and eight could -- could've

:30:31.:30:41.

without. Jamie made the point a moment ago, he's just off it at the

:30:42.:30:43.

moment. And maybe one element in all of

:30:44.:30:57.

this, if you missed us saying this right at the outset, he's basically

:30:58.:31:04.

playing his best mate. And maybe it's quite hard to engender that

:31:05.:31:10.

kind of venom you need against your opponent when somebody is in that

:31:11.:31:11.

situation. And the prize for the winner of this

:31:12.:31:53.

patch is a third round match against Gilles Muller or Lucas Rosol.

:31:54.:32:20.

That staunch the flow of games. The Bosnian won four in a row, but Iraq

:32:21.:32:32.

back to 4-2, just one break of serve. One thing you can guarantee

:32:33.:32:37.

is you're not going to get served off the court. You wouldn't be

:32:38.:32:43.

surprised if they have -- the entire match, however long it lasted,

:32:44.:32:48.

wouldn't see that statistic change. There is always a chance, but you

:32:49.:33:04.

don't want to give away points needlessly like that, which is how I

:33:05.:33:08.

am sure Bedene will see that. It just shows you how different this

:33:09.:33:12.

match is from temporary map's first match against Ivo Karlovic went.

:33:13.:33:19.

He's getting a chance every time today, and on Monday he could have

:33:20.:33:23.

gone three games without getting a chance.

:33:24.:33:45.

A bit of cat and mouse there. It is that backhand down the line again.

:33:46.:33:55.

He has had a lot of success with this two Panda down the line. -- two

:33:56.:34:04.

hander. Bedene likes to be positioned on the left-hand side of

:34:05.:34:06.

the court, waiting for the forehand. He is having to play some service

:34:07.:34:33.

here, Bedene. Only fractionally more than 70 miles an hour. I'm sure he

:34:34.:34:37.

said Ivo Karlovic when did you last serve a ball at 70 miles an hour...

:34:38.:34:42.

He would say, when I was 12. So it's a very different challenge for

:34:43.:34:54.

Bedene. At the moment it's one that's proving beyond him in the

:34:55.:35:01.

second set. But equally, every time Dzumhur comes out to serve, you feel

:35:02.:35:07.

there is the possibility of a break, it's just that Bedene mustn't

:35:08.:35:11.

needlessly give points away. And certainly, although he is 5-2 down

:35:12.:35:16.

in this set, Bedene does look like the better version of the kind of

:35:17.:35:22.

similar players, but better in every department. He has a better serve

:35:23.:35:26.

and more damaging forehand, he looks like he's more consistent, it's just

:35:27.:35:32.

a question of working out what's the best way to kind of deploy that on

:35:33.:35:34.

the court. Is this the kind of game, as well,

:35:35.:35:44.

and we can see by the way if you're wondering, all those midges flying

:35:45.:35:53.

round in front of Bedene, this epidemic of flying ants we have at

:35:54.:35:56.

Wimbledon. You can see them flying across the TV screen now, hundreds

:35:57.:36:01.

and hundreds and hundreds of them, and also crawling across the

:36:02.:36:06.

perfectly striped court, as well. But there's a load more there, you

:36:07.:36:15.

can see them. Just as Dzumhur walks out to the court, it's amazing. Its

:36:16.:36:20.

national flying and day-to-day. I'm sure you had that in your diary!

:36:21.:36:26.

Anyway, Bedene needs to hold onto his serve here and see what he can

:36:27.:36:31.

do on the Bosnian's the next time round. The aces have dried up from

:36:32.:36:34.

Bedene, needs one more two now. Challenging a call on the right

:36:35.:37:23.

service line, the ball was called in. Hawk-Eye has been snoozing in

:37:24.:37:29.

the sun for the last 15 minutes but called into action. CHUCKLES

:37:30.:37:37.

And thinking, what on earth are you talking about here?

:37:38.:37:42.

That was the kind of rally that Bedene was in complete control of

:37:43.:38:12.

that rally and yet he somehow lost the point. He just hesitated, he

:38:13.:38:17.

should have been in at the net after that shot.

:38:18.:38:24.

Dzumhur is cursing the fact he didn't make the move for that,

:38:25.:38:30.

because there was nobody at home. If he somehow managed to get that ball

:38:31.:38:34.

back into court, that was a guaranteed point for him. You can

:38:35.:38:39.

see Bedene well out of position. The point before, we often called that

:38:40.:38:42.

no man's land, for anyone who plays, who's watching, the coaches tell

:38:43.:38:48.

them, stay out of no man's land at all costs. The best players do it.

:38:49.:39:04.

Bedene's serve lacking the bite it had a few days ago. Maybe that's

:39:05.:39:09.

partly because, not just because of the conditions, because it is very

:39:10.:39:14.

warm, in the upper 20s, but also the effort of that victory Karlovic,

:39:15.:39:17.

mental and physical. And the unforced errors count

:39:18.:39:38.

continues to rise. 14 from Bedene, just five from his Bosnian opponent.

:39:39.:39:44.

And all too often they have been at key moments, like that. Just to give

:39:45.:39:55.

him some breathing space. UMPIRE: Mr Bedene is challenging the call, the

:39:56.:39:56.

right centre service line. Well... Bedene holds, and he needed that.

:39:57.:40:11.

But he needs this one more. Let's see if his intensity increases

:40:12.:40:46.

in this game. We know he's going to get into almost every single point

:40:47.:40:52.

on the Dzumhur serve. Finding a way to find out those loose errors that

:40:53.:40:55.

have been evident in the last 25-30 minutes.

:40:56.:41:21.

And we mentioned earlier, there's a lot more at stake for Bedene than

:41:22.:41:28.

just this match, the third-round tie against whoever it may be, puts him

:41:29.:41:32.

in the sporting spotlight, which is where he wants to be an needs to be.

:41:33.:41:39.

If he's going to create a rapport with the British sporting public.

:41:40.:41:44.

And this is one of those matches, the odds would favour him. He needs

:41:45.:41:46.

to win this game. But... This second set has drifted away.

:41:47.:42:02.

Rather too tamely for the liking of Bedene, I suspect. So we are all

:42:03.:42:04.

square. It is the best of three now. So do

:42:05.:42:18.

we start from scratch, or has anybody got momentum at the moment?

:42:19.:42:24.

I definitely think Bedene has to start from scratch here. I mean,

:42:25.:42:31.

these are the numbers. You can look at it in isolation. 79% first serve

:42:32.:42:37.

the Dzumhur is not a surprise, given the Paisley are talking about.

:42:38.:42:43.

Interesting for Bedene winning 18% of the points behind his second

:42:44.:42:46.

serve. That is probably the reason he was broken so many times in fact

:42:47.:42:51.

set. I was just trying to put myself in his shoes, in terms of mentally

:42:52.:42:55.

how he would have prepared for the Karlovic match. He would have been

:42:56.:42:59.

very focused on clear, in terms of how big a challenge that was going

:43:00.:43:02.

to beat and the match itself would have taken a lot of out of him. That

:43:03.:43:07.

match was exactly what you said it was going to be. In advance you

:43:08.:43:11.

would say he would serve massive big serves, somehow get the ball back in

:43:12.:43:15.

core and see where we are. If I hold my serve, I have a chance. A simple

:43:16.:43:20.

game plan and. And he did an amazing job of going five sets without being

:43:21.:43:24.

broken. With a guy serving like that down the other end, an amazing

:43:25.:43:28.

effort. Fast forward into this match, someone he knows unbelievably

:43:29.:43:34.

well, knows he will be comfortable and not served out the court,

:43:35.:43:36.

there's all sorts of potential banana skins to have a potential let

:43:37.:43:40.

down, which he did well in the first set but the second set has been a

:43:41.:43:44.

let down. It is now a question for him, he has to snap out of that.

:43:45.:43:48.

This is as good a chance as he is going to get in the second round of

:43:49.:43:53.

a Grand Slam. Again, if you're the student of body language, you'd say

:43:54.:43:57.

he doesn't seem to have a huge amount of energy. There is a bit of

:43:58.:44:01.

bumps lacking at the moment in his meaner. -- a bit of oomf lacking. We

:44:02.:44:07.

are one a piece in sets. That was not a great volley from the

:44:08.:44:33.

Bosnian. If I was Bedene now, every single

:44:34.:44:46.

time Dzumhur had a drop volley, I would be moving two or three steps

:44:47.:44:50.

forward. This first volley looks like it's a drop shot every single

:44:51.:44:51.

time. UMPIRE: The call is challenged on

:44:52.:45:36.

the right baseline. The ball was called in. The ball might have

:45:37.:45:43.

patched the baseline, which might be why it's trajectory was a bit odd.

:45:44.:45:53.

UMPIRE: Mr Bedene has two challenges remaining.

:45:54.:46:14.

Back to the consistent Bedene of the first set.

:46:15.:46:58.

That was more of an inside out backhand. Often talk about inside

:46:59.:47:06.

out forehands, but great use of the spin on the ball to move that away

:47:07.:47:08.

from Bedene. Not wholly convincing, but... He's

:47:09.:47:35.

got his nose in front. And it's also another chance for a lot of the

:47:36.:47:41.

British sporting public and tennis public to know who Aljaz Bedene is

:47:42.:47:45.

and to say his name correctly, by the way. A lot of people in the

:47:46.:47:48.

queue, who are you going to watch, they said Bed-een play, because that

:47:49.:47:56.

is how you would automatically say it. Over the last 18 months he's

:47:57.:48:01.

been asked repeatedly, how exactly do we say your name? It's Aljaz

:48:02.:48:03.

Bedene. That's a loose shot at the start of

:48:04.:48:15.

this first service game from the Bosnian. I was doing Dominic Thiem's

:48:16.:48:21.

match on number one Court last night and there was intermittent laughter

:48:22.:48:27.

from one corner of the crowd. That is great. He said he wouldn't serve

:48:28.:48:32.

a single ace in the whole match, and there we are, at 93 miles an hour,

:48:33.:48:36.

but drifting and drifting and drifting further away.

:48:37.:48:41.

And as I was walking out of number one Court, this guy came up to me.

:48:42.:48:46.

And said, did you hear all the laughter? I said, yeah, what was

:48:47.:48:50.

that all about? He said, I will tell you.

:48:51.:49:04.

He said because none of us really knew who to support in that game,

:49:05.:49:13.

and then one person shouted, "Come on Popsicle!" And we kept saying

:49:14.:49:16.

that throughout the whole match, and it kept us amused.

:49:17.:49:25.

Dzumhur berating himself of that lack of touch there, but Bedene is

:49:26.:49:32.

very swift off the mark. And he's got 30-30 here, we could

:49:33.:49:37.

point. -- big point. We talked about the speed of the

:49:38.:50:24.

Dzumhur serve, that 170 miles an hour, but Bedene not moving up to

:50:25.:50:28.

the ball at all, still 3-5 feet behind the baseline. With the ball

:50:29.:50:34.

coming at him that slowly, as well, for a club player that is sort of

:50:35.:50:38.

decent pace of ball, but at this level, the ball has almost stopped

:50:39.:50:41.

before he actually hits it. It puts all be pressure on him, to try and

:50:42.:50:45.

reenergise the ball on the way back over the net. And if you are still

:50:46.:50:50.

that far behind the baseline, the chances are that ball is going to be

:50:51.:50:53.

below the height of the net, so you have two hit it up.

:50:54.:51:02.

You just feel, actually, a lot of points are being lost here by

:51:03.:51:07.

Bedene, they're just going one after the other after the other in a

:51:08.:51:13.

roller-coaster. The last three points have all been lost to kind of

:51:14.:51:15.

nothing shots. Well, maybe that's a rally that will

:51:16.:51:29.

energise Bedene. And the feel of the sea aster that

:51:30.:52:22.

has kind of settled on this game, maybe this will just lift it a bit.

:52:23.:52:25.

Because he had to chase for that. Backhand down the line winner,

:52:26.:53:01.

again. This has definitely been the shot that's caught the eye from

:53:02.:53:05.

Dzumhur's point of view. This is probably the pick of the bunch.

:53:06.:53:10.

Certainly the hardest backhand he's hit. I just wonder if he can, from

:53:11.:53:15.

his point of view, look for a way to use that shot a little more often.

:53:16.:53:33.

These are nervous times for Aljaz Bedene. He's playing like a man

:53:34.:53:40.

whose very hesitant, when you would expect him to be the exact opposite

:53:41.:53:46.

after his victory against Karlovic a few days ago. Here is a break point

:53:47.:53:49.

for the Bosnian. Early break in the third set for the

:53:50.:54:25.

Bosnian. And, at the moment, Bedene seems to have... He's not getting

:54:26.:54:33.

through the match at the moment. When you think he was 6-3, 1-0

:54:34.:54:42.

serving, Dzumhur was still chuntering away to someone in his

:54:43.:54:47.

box, was all over the place, apart from actually in the match. It's

:54:48.:54:53.

hard to put your finger on why it's turned so dramatically. To me it

:54:54.:54:58.

looks like a combination of almost... Not an exact foot off the

:54:59.:55:03.

pedal from Bedene, but I think mentally he has been a bit loose.

:55:04.:55:06.

Quite a few errors coming in. There is definitely more of variety from

:55:07.:55:11.

Dzumhur. The biggest thing about his game now is he is throwing in quite

:55:12.:55:16.

a few forays to the net and I think that is taking a bit of Bedene's

:55:17.:55:22.

time away, which is adding to his discomfort. There is the Bedene

:55:23.:55:27.

team, just a few rows above them is the Great Britain Davis Cup captain,

:55:28.:55:32.

Leon Smith, watching this. Perhaps Bedene could do with Leon Smith down

:55:33.:55:37.

by the umpire's chair at the changeovers saying, come on mate,

:55:38.:55:41.

galvanise us. This game is very winnable. When you think of bout all

:55:42.:55:45.

the players of the world you could be playing in the second round of a

:55:46.:55:49.

Grand Slam, this is just the kind of guy you want to be up against.

:55:50.:55:59.

A few more like that, please. A big forehand, a big serve. A big fist

:56:00.:56:10.

pump, it feels like something, just inject a bit of energy.

:56:11.:56:20.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that Leon Smith is...

:56:21.:56:31.

What is to stop anyone texting a message to a player and a player

:56:32.:56:44.

looking at his phone at the change of ends? Right the umpire should be

:56:45.:56:53.

on top of that. A couple of unforced errors from the Bosnian.

:56:54.:57:06.

You get a text message or e-mail on your watch these days.

:57:07.:57:12.

It's a hard one to police now, isn't it? Good old-fashioned notebooks...

:57:13.:57:23.

That's a horrible forehand. That was a horrible game all round from

:57:24.:57:32.

Dzumhur. The crowd are suddenly getting into this and saying to

:57:33.:57:35.

Aljaz Bedene, "Come on!" It is very sophisticated now, is in

:57:36.:57:48.

it? The old days if if I scratch my right nostril, go to the backhand,

:57:49.:57:50.

those days are outmoded now. And that shout you heard, which you

:57:51.:59:09.

might have thought would have been from Bedene because of that error,

:59:10.:59:13.

was actually from the man in your picture, Dzumhur. Who was annoyed

:59:14.:59:18.

about something, but I'm not altogether clear what.

:59:19.:59:25.

Well, the ace is back. After a long absence, that is ace number seven

:59:26.:59:34.

for Bedene. That's just about the most

:59:35.:59:58.

convincing hold Bedene has had for a set and a half.

:59:59.:00:13.

This is a funny old game. In five minutes he has gone from not looking

:00:14.:00:20.

down and out, but looking down, and now being in control. I know this

:00:21.:00:28.

from playing myself when my serve was not a weapon that I had, but

:00:29.:00:34.

when I got a lead in an effort to drive home and advantage where the

:00:35.:00:38.

top players are so good at front running, there can be a tendency to

:00:39.:00:42.

over press on your service game because you do not have a few points

:00:43.:00:47.

where there are a couple of big points and when the rally starts you

:00:48.:00:53.

overhit and you rush to the net more quickly to press the advantage. In

:00:54.:00:58.

that last game from Dzumhur's point of view it looked like that, I have

:00:59.:01:02.

to push on, but I do not have the weaponry to do it. A lot of unforced

:01:03.:01:12.

errors from both players in this match so far. But bit by bit they

:01:13.:01:19.

are levelling each other out which is why we find ourselves effectively

:01:20.:01:26.

at even Stevens, albeit with Bedene leading in this set.

:01:27.:02:13.

Did he not commit to that shot completely?

:02:14.:02:43.

That was much better. This is one of the best point we have seen from

:02:44.:02:54.

Bedene since the first set, using all the angles of the court. That is

:02:55.:02:59.

what we expect to see from him, not so much the pace, but moving his

:03:00.:03:07.

opponent around. That would be classed as an outburst of emotion

:03:08.:03:16.

from Bedene! A swinging serve from the Bosnian. Barely any pace. Just

:03:17.:03:21.

taking Bedene so far out of court. Bedene might have fancied that game.

:03:22.:04:31.

He might have seen it as a shift in power taking place. But it did not.

:04:32.:04:37.

We are starting to get to the stage in this match where a break of serve

:04:38.:04:41.

here and there could make the difference. It is why Bedene needs

:04:42.:04:44.

some big first serves like that. An observation which is unusual on a

:04:45.:05:23.

day like today, given how hot and sunny it is, but neither player are

:05:24.:05:25.

wearing a cap. Good point. A good angle from Bedene. That is

:05:26.:05:51.

the difficulty with dealing with the grass court, the grass almost kills

:05:52.:05:58.

the ball. As well as moving wide, Dzumhur had to move forward, which

:05:59.:06:02.

he did not do. Some of these exchanges you can tell

:06:03.:06:34.

that they know each other so well. Dzumhur was waiting with his

:06:35.:06:42.

backhand for that. I have seen it too many times, my friend! A bit of

:06:43.:06:49.

anxiety on the Bedene serve. But that was a beautiful volley. That is

:06:50.:06:54.

just about the best shot he has played today. Possibly one of the

:06:55.:07:01.

only serve and volley is of the match so far. What a time to do it.

:07:02.:07:05.

That was not an easy volley. No angle to work with Renee. -- really.

:07:06.:07:18.

Another outburst of emotion! Positively animated now. That was a

:07:19.:07:34.

big cold. It really was. Even when you are a seasoned campaigner, does

:07:35.:07:40.

it feel different at 3-4 than it does at 1-2. ? Is a break of serve

:07:41.:07:46.

substantially more important now than it was earlier? Yes,

:07:47.:07:54.

definitely, that is the art of matchplay. You hear phrases like the

:07:55.:08:01.

top players always peeking at the business end of the set. Whatever

:08:02.:08:08.

that is, certainly on a grass court, the advantage is serving first and

:08:09.:08:14.

being ahead on the scoreboard. I think it is relevant if you have a

:08:15.:08:23.

very close match. Andy Murray will be in action later on on the Centre

:08:24.:08:29.

Court. He is one of those players where it gets to 4-4 and then he

:08:30.:08:34.

breaks. Aljaz Bedene would like a break of

:08:35.:08:56.

serve here. 4-3 to the good. As we have said repeatedly, he will get

:08:57.:09:01.

these returns back, it is a question of what happens after that?

:09:02.:09:19.

I wonder if Dzumhur has asked for some medical treatment. He asked the

:09:20.:09:25.

umpire to make a phone call, which he has done. There is a double fault

:09:26.:09:29.

to start this game. That is the first one of those that

:09:30.:10:07.

he has made a pig's year of in quite a while.

:10:08.:10:48.

A big point. You sense that. You really do. There is a sense that

:10:49.:10:59.

they both felt it as well. Very nervy. You could feel the tension in

:11:00.:11:07.

the stadium during that point. You are two break points. Which becomes

:11:08.:11:11.

one very quickly. Flying off the outside of his

:11:12.:11:38.

racket, the Bosnian. He thought of throwing them into the sky and then

:11:39.:11:47.

thought better of it. And it happened and so it came to pass.

:11:48.:11:51.

That question you asked, that backhand, how many times have we

:11:52.:11:55.

seen him make that backhand down the line? Now the opportunity for the

:11:56.:12:07.

British number three to take a 3-1 lead. A few more like that will do

:12:08.:12:13.

it. And Aljaz Bedene is a lot happier

:12:14.:14:03.

now than he was a few minutes ago. 2-1. SUE BARKER: And so Bedene takes

:14:04.:14:19.

the third set. Let's update you with what is happening elsewhere. Over on

:14:20.:14:25.

Centre Court it is now one set all. Donna Vekic took the second set. A

:14:26.:14:39.

real battle on her hands for Johanna Konta. You can see that now on BBC

:14:40.:14:45.

One. And on Court Number One Kei Nishikori has got a battle on his

:14:46.:14:47.

hand. He has dropped the second set, losing the time break 9-7. That is

:14:48.:14:51.

our featured match on the red button. Aljaz Bedene, the winner of

:14:52.:14:58.

that match will play the winner of this one. This is Gilles Muller in

:14:59.:15:17.

your picture, he is up against Lukas Rosol. He put out Rafael Nadal a few

:15:18.:15:17.

years ago. Seven games all and juice in the fifth and final set. It has

:15:18.:15:18.

been going on for over two and a half hours. One result, Jo-Wilfried

:15:19.:15:26.

Tsonga is through to the next round. He beat the qualifier from Italy,

:15:27.:15:33.

Simone Bolelli. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been twice a semifinalist here.

:15:34.:15:41.

He is through to the third round. We know he is through to face Sam

:15:42.:15:47.

Querrey, because here he is, he has come through in four sets. He is

:15:48.:15:57.

seeded 24 at these championships and he is through to round three, so it

:15:58.:16:02.

will be Sam Querrey against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next

:16:03.:16:08.

round. That we go now to court number three. JOHN INVERDALE: We

:16:09.:16:17.

have seen the statistics for the third set and Jamie Baker was making

:16:18.:16:22.

the comment that he had not actually seen a differential between the

:16:23.:16:26.

first serve points one and the second serve points one ever so

:16:27.:16:32.

remarkable as Bedene's statistics because they were. 100% points one

:16:33.:16:37.

on first serve and only nine points one on second serve. As a player I

:16:38.:16:42.

am sure he probably was not aware that it was that extreme, but he

:16:43.:16:46.

must have felt as the set was going on that he was doing really well,

:16:47.:16:50.

but the pressure when he missed the second serve, you must have been

:16:51.:16:54.

aware he was not having the influence and the point that he

:16:55.:16:59.

would have liked. Was he using the second serve to put the ball in play

:17:00.:17:05.

and we will see what happens after that? He would not be making a

:17:06.:17:07.

conscious decision to do anything differently than he did in the first

:17:08.:17:12.

couple of sets, but whether he was a little tentative, we talked about

:17:13.:17:18.

him being more attacking in the last 35 or 40 minutes, Dzumhur, so those

:17:19.:17:27.

two things could have had an impact. We are waiting for two players

:17:28.:17:33.

because Bedene went off court at the end of that set. The British Davis

:17:34.:17:39.

Cup captain Leon Smith is in the crowd and when he looks at the

:17:40.:17:43.

statistics after this game, that is something he will say to Aljaz

:17:44.:17:48.

Bedene. That is a differential that is ridiculous. I think he is being

:17:49.:17:54.

attacked by those flying ants that is bedevilling the whole of

:17:55.:17:58.

Wimbledon this year. He did not look too impressed, did he?! The number

:17:59.:18:08.

of flying ants at Wimbledon may have diminished by one in the last few

:18:09.:18:13.

seconds! The only thing you can say for sure is whoever they play in the

:18:14.:18:17.

next round will be very tired because Lukas Rosol and Gilles

:18:18.:18:23.

Muller are still playing after hours and hours and they are into a fifth

:18:24.:18:30.

set. They will be tired on Friday. If Bedene could win this in four,

:18:31.:18:34.

this might be a golden opportunity for the British number three at

:18:35.:18:36.

Wimbledon this year. That was a wild shot from the

:18:37.:19:01.

Bosnian. It is that old saying, just make your opponent play one more

:19:02.:19:05.

shot. It is so relevant at whatever level of the game you are playing.

:19:06.:19:10.

You sense if Dzumhur got broken here... Bedene might run away with

:19:11.:19:20.

this. He is not a happy bunny at the moment.

:19:21.:19:33.

And his mood will not be helped by a shot like that.

:19:34.:19:47.

Four errors, one after the other from the racket of the Bosnian.

:19:48.:20:03.

Bedene is in charge now. That was a gimme start for the British number

:20:04.:20:09.

three. It was strange from the Bosnian. He went through patches

:20:10.:20:13.

where he looked so solid, he had the upper hand. To start a set like

:20:14.:20:17.

that, you would think, I have got the chance to start and keep ahead

:20:18.:20:27.

on the scoreboard. It was an absolute giveaway. That is what

:20:28.:20:34.

happened at the start of the second set and then Bedene conceded the

:20:35.:21:24.

it is worth repeating what we said at the outset. These two are the

:21:25.:21:32.

best of mates. They spend a lot of time together on the tour. And that

:21:33.:21:40.

has perhaps taken a bit of the banks and the venom out of this match.

:21:41.:22:05.

The Bosnian's shoulders are starting to droop now. Bedene can surely see

:22:06.:22:13.

his chance. So effective against Ivo Karlovic on

:22:14.:23:08.

Monday. Less so today, but that ace puts him in control in this fourth

:23:09.:23:15.

set. That is what he had not managed to do in previous sets, drive home

:23:16.:23:22.

the early advantage. He will be looking to see if he can get a

:23:23.:23:24.

double break here. Mistake after mistake now from the

:23:25.:24:01.

Bosnian. Aljaz Bedene was quick, but the

:24:02.:24:28.

options open to him were limited. He was seriously quick up to the drop

:24:29.:24:33.

shot, but the risk you have going crosscourt is you open up the court.

:24:34.:24:37.

It has to be a winner if you go crosscourt.

:24:38.:24:57.

That was a beautifully struck ball, but agonisingly close. Again it is

:24:58.:25:09.

one of these games where you think I could break here and then it is 3-0

:25:10.:25:15.

and then it is almost done. There is another flying ant, this time down

:25:16.:25:18.

the back of Dzumhur's shirt. This would be a good hold for the

:25:19.:25:35.

Bosnian. It really would. That went just long but from either

:25:36.:25:57.

player's point of view they are both getting chances to break. If you can

:25:58.:26:05.

stay in sight in this fourth set, you never know what can happen.

:26:06.:26:23.

You cannot see into our commentary box, but Jamie was pushing Aljaz

:26:24.:26:30.

Bedene into the net there. You wanted him to get the finishing

:26:31.:26:33.

touch. Like that. Perfect execution, he saw

:26:34.:26:52.

the open face from Bedene. He really played that with his feet. He never

:26:53.:26:56.

stopped, he ran all the way through the ball.

:26:57.:27:59.

He will not be very pleased with that. But he still has a break.

:28:00.:28:11.

Let's talk about that beautifully struck volley from Dzumhur in that

:28:12.:28:18.

last game. He was at pace. It is about getting balance and core and

:28:19.:28:22.

everything else and going through the ball and this is a fantastic

:28:23.:28:27.

example of how to do it. At any level the tendency is when you see

:28:28.:28:32.

your opponent in so much trouble, you think, OK, the ball is coming

:28:33.:28:38.

slowly, it is high, I have got this point in the bag and you stop moving

:28:39.:28:42.

and you think it is too easy. But his feet never stop. He is still

:28:43.:28:47.

going after the ball has bounced twice. It means he can contact the

:28:48.:28:53.

ball at the highest possible point and it makes playing the ball easier

:28:54.:28:57.

with every single step that he takes. But the balance at the moment

:28:58.:29:05.

of contact is key. Definitely, it is not a case of running into it like a

:29:06.:29:09.

headless chicken. It is a balanced approach. And he is still in this

:29:10.:29:19.

match, Dzumhur. That was a lackadaisical game by Bedene. Even

:29:20.:29:23.

though he has a break, he has not been serving with the authority and

:29:24.:29:29.

the panache that he did against Ivo Karlovic a couple of days ago. He is

:29:30.:29:34.

vulnerable on serve as well, so this is an interesting stage in this

:29:35.:29:37.

match. Until that. I'm not sure whether the frustration

:29:38.:30:17.

is with the choice of shot or the execution.

:30:18.:30:22.

It is true of so many players, but Bedene's game is different when his

:30:23.:31:13.

first serve is that effective and convincing.

:31:14.:31:31.

That is well played. So many times in this match, we have seen examples

:31:32.:32:18.

of how good the movement is of Aljaz Bedene.

:32:19.:33:12.

That's a good shot. We have been used to seeing lots of winners in

:33:13.:33:22.

this match down the line from the Bosnian's backhand, but not too many

:33:23.:33:24.

crosscourt. And a simple hold for Dzumhur as

:33:25.:33:41.

well. This game is kind of meandering. Meandering towards a

:33:42.:33:47.

conclusion, but you feel that because it is meandering, nobody

:33:48.:33:51.

really has seized it by the scruff of the neck, so actually, it could

:33:52.:33:56.

still go any way. The pattern in the first three sets, there is no way

:33:57.:34:00.

that Bedene can be taking this one for granted at all. There is a

:34:01.:34:08.

pattern in terms of how he is winning points on his service game,

:34:09.:34:12.

just to highlight the point you make. When he gets his first serve

:34:13.:34:16.

in, he is winning eight out of ten point, and when he doesn't, he is

:34:17.:34:21.

losing seven out of ten. He won't be aware of the exact numbers, but he

:34:22.:34:27.

will be aware of how important the first serve is. And that of his

:34:28.:34:37.

opponent. Certainly. 11 aces from Bedene in this match today, just a

:34:38.:34:43.

solitary one from the Bosnian. That was an extraordinary second serve

:34:44.:34:52.

kicker out to the advantage card that almost disappeared into the

:34:53.:34:59.

first row of the stands. -- out of the advantage court. The man from

:35:00.:35:05.

Sarajevo will still think he is in this match. And Bedene has a new

:35:06.:35:18.

racket to serve here. Is that just because, why not? Actually, on a hot

:35:19.:35:25.

day like today, it is perfectly legitimate that the tension is

:35:26.:35:29.

loosening off as the day goes on, and I think that having a slightly

:35:30.:35:34.

tighter racket will allow him to get through the ball a bit more, stay

:35:35.:35:37.

aggressive on the contact. More consistent hitting from Bedene.

:35:38.:36:23.

Against this man, he doesn't need to go for the winner on the first shot

:36:24.:36:27.

of the rally, does he? That is not his game, either. You can see the

:36:28.:36:33.

damage he can do by using the angles of the court. And with a first serve

:36:34.:36:40.

like that -- 125 five miles per hour.

:36:41.:36:50.

-- and with a first serve like that - 125 mph.

:36:51.:37:21.

And there is another second serve point for Bedene that he doesn't

:37:22.:37:26.

win. This is nervy stuff, actually. That is how you calm those nerves,

:37:27.:37:47.

though. Ace number 12. 1-2 from the British number three,

:37:48.:38:23.

keeps his nose ahead. A bit of extra pace on that forehand, followed by a

:38:24.:38:29.

big look up to his team in the box, as if to say, come on, one more

:38:30.:38:33.

push. A decisive start to the game from

:38:34.:39:07.

the Bosnian. There was a shout from the crowd of, come on, Ali. What do

:39:08.:39:16.

the players on the tour call him? Is it Ali, Aljaz? He missed it. I think

:39:17.:39:24.

they call him Aljaz. He made hard work of that, but maybe

:39:25.:39:56.

the ball did just jump up, or maybe he was in the wrong place. Anyway...

:39:57.:40:55.

UMPIRE: New balls, please. A slightly tame game from Bedene

:40:56.:41:04.

there. I suppose he is consoled by the fact that he does have the break

:41:05.:41:09.

of serve in this fourth set. And it is worth going back 48 hours and

:41:10.:41:12.

saying that the whole atmosphere and ambience of this game, and the level

:41:13.:41:17.

of the game, and the pressure and noise, and the intensity, is so

:41:18.:41:23.

different that, in a sense, you allow yourself to be consumed by the

:41:24.:41:27.

atmosphere around you, and it kind of feels that is where he is today.

:41:28.:41:32.

That is one of the challenges for an individual athlete, definitely for a

:41:33.:41:38.

tennis player when they are playing in front of an arena, is, you think

:41:39.:41:44.

about the things you can't control as an individual. But no matter how

:41:45.:41:48.

much you talk about that, there is no question, the energy of a crowded

:41:49.:41:53.

something that plays a massive part. The biggest thing now for Bedene, I

:41:54.:41:59.

think, is keeping up his intensity on every single point, not dropping

:42:00.:42:04.

on the Dzumhur service games, because that can spill over into his

:42:05.:42:09.

service games, which obviously, he doesn't want. It is a hot old Bay on

:42:10.:42:15.

Court number three, and there is a slightly dormant atmosphere, and one

:42:16.:42:18.

or two people are going to be rushing off to get some sort of

:42:19.:42:23.

hydration afterwards, because this is hot stuff for them watching. And

:42:24.:42:31.

Aljaz Bedene needs eight more points, three or foul-mac aces, and

:42:32.:42:38.

he will be done. -- three or four aces.

:42:39.:43:05.

Well, better big hitting from Bedene, and this was an opponent on

:43:06.:44:23.

the canvas after that. But there was a lot more force in those ground

:44:24.:44:31.

shots from Bedene. That was a gallant effort to get his racket

:44:32.:44:32.

onto that in the end. I was just thinking how much Bedene

:44:33.:45:10.

had upped the ante in this game. And then he throws one like that, as he

:45:11.:45:13.

has a few times in this match. The crowd are saying to him, come on,

:45:14.:45:15.

get this done. Well... UMPIRE: McCall is

:45:16.:45:48.

challenged. The ball was called out. I think they may be replaying this

:45:49.:45:56.

one. I am not sure about this one. -- the call is challenged. Dzumhur

:45:57.:46:05.

bashes a ball down the other end in a measure of disgust, because that

:46:06.:46:08.

was quite an aggressive back and that put him in a decent position in

:46:09.:46:13.

the rally. Nonetheless, it is still game point for Bedene.

:46:14.:46:33.

Well, all that matters is the score. And that is what it is. It basically

:46:34.:46:58.

means this is the last role of the dice for Dzumhur from Bosnia. He

:46:59.:47:02.

needs to hold his serve here or Aljaz Bedene will be through to the

:47:03.:47:07.

next round, for the second time in his career.

:47:08.:47:38.

That was the smartest pick-up of a drop shot we have seen today, just

:47:39.:47:45.

pushing it down the line, plays for position and then being rewarded

:47:46.:47:46.

with a smash. That is the way to do it. The

:47:47.:48:10.

British number three lent his shirt and shorts to Damir Dzumhur on

:48:11.:48:14.

Monday for his first round match so that he could win that and set up

:48:15.:48:26.

this tie today. But today, he has shown who wears the trousers in this

:48:27.:48:34.

relationship. The British number three is through to a third round

:48:35.:48:40.

confrontation with Gilles Muller, a big server. But today, on Court

:48:41.:48:49.

number three, the British number three was very much the top dog. I

:48:50.:49:03.

think we have to be brutally honest, Jamie, and say it wasn't the

:49:04.:49:06.

greatest game of tennis we have ever seen, or that this Court has ever

:49:07.:49:09.

had played upon it, but you can only beat who is in front of you, and all

:49:10.:49:14.

those other cliches, and he is into the next round. Bedene, quite

:49:15.:49:19.

rightly, will be delighted to get through that. I don't think he will

:49:20.:49:23.

say it was the best performance of his career, or even this year, but

:49:24.:49:28.

having come back from an amazing win in the first round, to bounce back,

:49:29.:49:34.

any result today that got a win is a job well done, in my view. Against

:49:35.:49:41.

Gilles Muller, it is almost like going back to Monday and playing Ivo

:49:42.:49:44.

Karlovic again, another big server. And he will have to serve better

:49:45.:49:48.

against Miller to have a chance of winning. It will be a tough match.

:49:49.:49:56.

Gilles Muller is one of the big servers on the tour. I watched his

:49:57.:49:59.

first match and he was very in control of his game.

:50:00.:50:21.

Ali as -- Aljaz is having a chat with us at courtside.

:50:22.:50:31.

Many congratulations. What is your reaction to that win? I am a little

:50:32.:50:40.

tired. I was playing quite solid. He gave me a few easy games, which

:50:41.:50:46.

helped, so I am happy. How are you enjoying getting this support? I

:50:47.:50:50.

played my first match on this Court, and they are amazing. I have to

:50:51.:50:55.

thank them, because I think that without them I couldn't have won the

:50:56.:50:59.

first match or this one. Thanks a lot. That equalled your best Grand

:51:00.:51:03.

Slam performance, and it is your best at Wimbledon. You have Gilles

:51:04.:51:09.

Muller next, how far can you go? I played him a few weeks ago. He loves

:51:10.:51:17.

grass. He is a lefty with a big serve. I will fight and see what

:51:18.:51:22.

happens. Fantastic stuff. Well done so far. Cheers. SUE BARKER: Very

:51:23.:51:30.

well done indeed, coming through this match. He had an immense five

:51:31.:51:35.

set match in the first round. Another big server awaits him in

:51:36.:51:38.

round three. Aljaz Bedene is through. Meanwhile, on Centre Court,

:51:39.:51:46.

Jo Konta is involved in an immense battle. You can see it is one set

:51:47.:51:50.

all will stop no tie-break, and she is down 0-30 on her serve, the

:51:51.:51:58.

Centre Court crowd trying to GE her up. These are important moments in

:51:59.:52:03.

this match. That match is live on BBC One. We are going to take you

:52:04.:52:10.

over to Court Number One to see Kei Nishikori against Sergiy Stakhovsky.

:52:11.:52:24.

Let's join our commentators. Peter Fleming is alongside Ronald

:52:25.:52:34.

McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: Sergiy Stakhovsky holding serve in this

:52:35.:52:40.

fourth set. Two hours and 40 minutes we have been on court now. It has

:52:41.:52:51.

been an intense, keenly contested affair during this second round

:52:52.:52:58.

match. It has been. It has been a disappointing performance from

:52:59.:53:03.

Nishikori, not really playing the sort of tennis we might expect from

:53:04.:53:10.

him. But he has done what he does so well. He has fought, he has put the

:53:11.:53:16.

ball back into play, he has run, and he has come up with enough winners

:53:17.:53:22.

to put himself in a pretty good position. He is up to- one in sets,

:53:23.:53:29.

on serve in the fourth. He has the best record of all time in five set

:53:30.:53:38.

matches. Should this go the distance, Nishikori would have to

:53:39.:53:45.

remain the favourite. But it has been hard work.

:53:46.:53:54.

Stakhovsky has lost the only five set match he has contested at

:53:55.:53:57.

Wimbledon. Nishikori has relied on the

:53:58.:54:43.

forehand. The backhand has been surprisingly suspect. He has made a

:54:44.:54:48.

lot of unforced errors of that site, which is unlike him. -- off that

:54:49.:55:03.

side. The previous ground strokes had terrific depth. Now the winners

:55:04.:55:12.

from the racket of Nishikori just creeping ahead of the unforced

:55:13.:55:20.

errors as this match progresses. A solid hold of serve. 3-3.

:55:21.:56:03.

Eighth ace of the match for Stakhovsky. He leads Nishikori by

:56:04.:56:09.

two in that statistical category. Nishikori just knocking himself on

:56:10.:57:07.

the headband there. Not executed as he would have liked.

:57:08.:57:24.

Nishikori is really struggling against the first serve of

:57:25.:57:29.

Stakhovsky. In fact, he has only won one of 13 points in this set when

:57:30.:57:35.

the Ukrainian has put his first serve in play.

:57:36.:58:03.

So, glorious conditions here in south-west London. Of course, the

:58:04.:58:08.

reconfiguration of Court Number One means that there is very little

:58:09.:58:15.

shade. Michael Chang, French Open champion from 1989, part of

:58:16.:58:25.

Nishikori's coaching squad... The spectators here have been milling in

:58:26.:58:31.

and out. There have been a couple of comfort breaks at the end of

:58:32.:58:35.

previous sets. Those who have stayed throughout, we have been on court

:58:36.:58:43.

for two hours and 45 minutes now, witnessed a really enthralling

:58:44.:58:47.

encounter. And they have been a significant feature of this match -

:58:48.:58:54.

be flying ants. It looks like this one has shed its wings, so no longer

:58:55.:58:59.

a sliding and. It is not a long life, but I'm sure it's a happy one!

:59:00.:59:09.

So, we remain on serve in the fourth set, eighth game, Nishikori to

:59:10.:59:12.

serve, 3-4, leading 2-1 in sets. That will perhaps go down as another

:59:13.:59:41.

unforced error from the backhand. That would be harsh, but he hasn't

:59:42.:59:46.

timed that wing very well at all today.

:59:47.:00:03.

A terrific winner from Stakhovsky. The alarm bells will be ringing now.

:00:04.:00:16.

Stakhovsky doing a nice job of stepping up onto the baseline to

:00:17.:00:17.

attack this one. He gets his first points on the

:00:18.:00:31.

board in this service game. 103 mph down the centreline. The

:00:32.:01:00.

seventh ace of the match for Nishikori.

:01:01.:01:34.

Oh, my goodness. Credit to Sergiy Stakhovsky for battling tenaciously

:01:35.:01:48.

to keep himself in the points. Perhaps he hit that one just a

:01:49.:01:53.

little too anxiously. He saw Stakhovsky was closing the gap

:01:54.:01:54.

quickly. That is a difficult shot to try and

:01:55.:02:21.

change directions, when a ball is coming at you with pace.

:02:22.:02:49.

They remain on serve. It is the three hour mark now on Court Number

:02:50.:02:58.

One. Stakhovsky to serve. The serve and volley has been an

:02:59.:03:27.

effective tactic for Stakhovsky. Once again attempting the more

:03:28.:04:12.

difficult target down the line. You have to be in perfect balance and

:04:13.:04:17.

certain that you can time that one to go for it.

:04:18.:06:10.

A blistering backhand to close out that came from Stakhovsky.

:06:11.:06:26.

He will not hit many better backhand than this one. His backhand is his

:06:27.:06:34.

preferred wing off the ground. Finally Court Number One filling up

:06:35.:06:48.

again. It was quite full at the start. But I suppose the weather and

:06:49.:06:57.

perhaps the flying ants have driven some of the spectators away, but

:06:58.:06:58.

they are back. To the top right you can see the

:06:59.:07:18.

construction for the roof that will be in use for the 2019

:07:19.:07:24.

Championships. It is a three-year process. To get it in place and get

:07:25.:07:32.

everything moving properly. Nishikori is serving, the tenth game

:07:33.:07:49.

in the fourth set. 4-5. They are on serve.

:07:50.:09:19.

Unable to control that attempted drop shot.

:09:20.:09:45.

Wonderfully directed from beyond the baseline to close out the service

:09:46.:09:54.

game. It is 5-5. And no doubt the backhands that Nishikori has

:09:55.:09:59.

executed over the last few games will give him hard. It was all over

:10:00.:10:05.

the place in the first couple of sets.

:10:06.:10:29.

to reflect backhand once again. Nishikori did not even attempt to

:10:30.:11:06.

move to run down that one. Yes, this is perfection. -- a great backhand

:11:07.:11:13.

once again. It is that type of day. Kei

:11:14.:12:33.

Nishikori calling a ball boy for a towel. It is that kind of day here

:12:34.:12:35.

on Court Number One. Stakhovsky with another solid hold

:12:36.:13:14.

of serve. No service breaks created or break points opportunities during

:13:15.:13:23.

this fourth set. Stakhovsky won the second set in the tie-break and

:13:24.:13:27.

saved a set point in that breaker. He just may need to do it again here

:13:28.:13:29.

in the fourth. It has become perhaps a little bit

:13:30.:14:06.

more difficult to gain inroads and the Nishikori serve appears as if

:14:07.:14:14.

the starting to hit the ball with a little more confidence from the back

:14:15.:14:15.

of the court. Only the tenth time that Nishikori

:14:16.:14:50.

has served and four lead in the entire match. Just in time to do it.

:14:51.:15:20.

Stakhovsky in conversation with the court. Perhaps the bounce was not as

:15:21.:15:24.

he would have liked it. So we are heading for a fourth set

:15:25.:15:44.

tie-break. Nishikori got down 5-1 in the second

:15:45.:16:42.

set tie-break. It looked as though things were out of control and then

:16:43.:16:47.

he came back to eventually get a set point.

:16:48.:17:04.

Well played. Wrong footing Stakhovsky. That was more of a short

:17:05.:17:12.

lob and a drop shot. Stakhovsky with his first points of

:17:13.:17:24.

this tie-break. He is still only a mini-break down.

:17:25.:20:05.

He has demonstrated his battling qualities throughout this match,

:20:06.:20:05.

Stakhovsky. I'm very well crafted point from

:20:06.:20:50.

Nishikori. A courageous backhand when you consider the number of

:20:51.:20:55.

unforced errors that he has made off that wing in crucial situations

:20:56.:20:59.

today. But he has a deep-seated belief in this shot. A timely

:21:00.:21:05.

winner. Nishikori is edging closer towards

:21:06.:22:00.

the winning line. Getting encouragement from Michael Chang.

:22:01.:22:22.

The serve and volley effective once again for Stakhovsky. A sneak attack

:22:23.:22:37.

really. Nishikori had no idea that he was following that serve in.

:22:38.:23:06.

So, Stakhovsky still only one mini break down. Nishikori now is just

:23:07.:23:18.

composing himself as he prepares to try and progressed through to the

:23:19.:23:20.

third round. He got the impression that Nishikori

:23:21.:24:05.

would be determined not to commit any errors. It brings up match

:24:06.:24:13.

point. Perhaps Stakhovsky had an opportunity to come in behind the

:24:14.:24:17.

backhand down the line. Nishikori was reeling. But he did not and

:24:18.:24:23.

Nishikori regained his equilibrium. So the mini-break secured by

:24:24.:24:43.

Stakhovsky and they are back on serve effectively. One match point

:24:44.:24:46.

goes begging. What a point! A terrific point from

:24:47.:25:31.

both players. Nishikori will be disappointed that he did not put

:25:32.:25:33.

that last one into play. Great defending of the net by

:25:34.:25:43.

Stakhovsky. And in the end he was lucky that

:25:44.:26:02.

Nishikori just missed time to that one because it was easier than a few

:26:03.:26:06.

of the other ones he had put back in the court.

:26:07.:26:27.

Is he thinking about launching a challenge?

:26:28.:27:02.

That fifth double fault of the match from Stakhovsky means it is match

:27:03.:27:19.

point once again. A canny serve from Nishikori. That

:27:20.:27:53.

was only 100 miles an hour but Stakhovsky was unable to time it

:27:54.:27:58.

properly. Well, it was not Nishikori's finest performance, but

:27:59.:28:03.

it was a good fighting effort just the same. No doubt he will gain some

:28:04.:28:09.

confidence from just having come through in difficult circumstances.

:28:10.:28:17.

It took him three hours and 15 minutes but after four keenly

:28:18.:28:22.

contested sets, it is Kei Nishikori, the number nine seed, who goes

:28:23.:28:26.

through to the third round of the men's singles tournament here. 6-4,

:28:27.:28:37.

6-7, 6-1, 7-6. I am sure he will take huge confidence from having

:28:38.:28:44.

prevailed without hitting the highs and playing his best tennis, but he

:28:45.:28:49.

was stubborn, he was competitive, and he hung around to get himself

:28:50.:28:55.

through any bad patches he may have experience. Sergiy Stakhovsky

:28:56.:29:02.

eliminated at this second round stage as he was last year. It is Kei

:29:03.:29:09.

Nishikori who leaves to the celebratory applause of the fans

:29:10.:29:15.

here on Court Number One. He will interact with the fans, signing

:29:16.:29:21.

autographs. Some people will try and grab a selfie as well. All types of

:29:22.:29:29.

things being proffered for the number nine seed to sign. Stakhovsky

:29:30.:29:41.

played well. He very nearly gained the upper hand. He played a poor

:29:42.:29:50.

third set perhaps. That allowed Nishikori just to settle in

:29:51.:29:57.

And for the first time in what is now a three match rivalry, Kei

:29:58.:30:03.

Nishikori gets a victory over Sarah Goss Bukovsky. -- over Sarah Guy

:30:04.:30:12.

Stakhovsky. And as such she goes through to the third round, and

:30:13.:30:17.

that's how he did it. He is now speaking to our post match

:30:18.:30:20.

interview, Lee McKenzie, with who he will share his immediate thoughts

:30:21.:30:25.

after that win. First of all, congratulations for

:30:26.:30:28.

the fifth time here at Wimbledon, you are through to the third round.

:30:29.:30:33.

We dominated at moments but he kept coming back. How tough was by? I

:30:34.:30:38.

knew it was going to be a tough match because I think his best

:30:39.:30:44.

surface is grass. I knew he was going to be a tough player. And

:30:45.:30:53.

especially the last set, he is a didn't get a break. Intends

:30:54.:30:57.

absorbing performance, what will you be working on before the next rung

:30:58.:31:00.

with Roberto Bautista Agut aggrieved? I seem to be playing good

:31:01.:31:11.

enough against Sergiy today. I have two raise my level to be Bautista.

:31:12.:31:20.

When a tough opponent, hot conditions, and there seem to be an

:31:21.:31:23.

awful lot of flying insects around. There were so many. The bugs were

:31:24.:31:31.

hitting my face all the time, so it wasn't easy. But I kept my focus. We

:31:32.:31:35.

know how much she struggled with injury on grass, but you looked to

:31:36.:31:38.

be moving around well out there. How were you feeling? Today was good. I

:31:39.:31:43.

felt very good on the court and I had enough energy. I was ready to

:31:44.:31:49.

play a long match. Yeah, very happy to be healthy again. Roberto

:31:50.:31:53.

Bautista Agut Agu is your next opponent. You have beaten him on

:31:54.:31:59.

four occasions. Have you beaten him on grass before, and how tough will

:32:00.:32:03.

he be? I don't think we have played on grass before so it will be a new

:32:04.:32:08.

match for us. He's a good player, a very solid player from the baseline.

:32:09.:32:14.

So I'll try to play aggressively. Well done today. Thank you.

:32:15.:32:22.

COMMENTATOR: So this was how Kei Nishikori punched his ticket through

:32:23.:32:26.

to the third round during the men's singles tournament. It was on a

:32:27.:32:35.

fourth set tie-break with his battling qualities serving him well.

:32:36.:32:39.

He conceded during that post match interview that he will have two

:32:40.:32:43.

raise his level. He's got three hours and 15 minutes of Grand Slam

:32:44.:32:47.

tennis under his belt during the course of this second round match.

:32:48.:32:51.

Now he's looking to regroup, recover and return, where he will face

:32:52.:32:57.

Roberto Bautista Agut, the 18th seed in that next round. And that will be

:32:58.:33:04.

a difficult proposition for Nishikori. Especially if he plays as

:33:05.:33:11.

he did today. I think he was just a little too erratic off the ground.

:33:12.:33:18.

And Bautista Agu, one of these ground that misses the ground stroke

:33:19.:33:23.

every other Tuesday. If Nishikori is erratic again, then the Spaniard

:33:24.:33:34.

will give him all kinds of trouble. Batista Agut, of course, is not

:33:35.:33:38.

known as a grass court superstar. But the way the game is played

:33:39.:33:43.

today, all surfaces are quite similar, really. I'm sure he'll be

:33:44.:33:57.

to play regardless. Nishikori will be pleased with how he served. Did

:33:58.:34:01.

well behind the first serve and the second, really. But that wasn't the

:34:02.:34:06.

issue. The issue for him was that he didn't really get enough returns

:34:07.:34:11.

into play. Didn't really put Stakhovsky under enough pressure. On

:34:12.:34:20.

the return. Two breakthrough as often as he would have liked, I'm

:34:21.:34:30.

sure. So, that concludes what has been an enthralling second round

:34:31.:34:35.

match up in the men's singles competition. Kei Nishikori through

:34:36.:34:38.

to the third round with a four set victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky. We

:34:39.:34:43.

will hand you over to the commentators for the next match,

:34:44.:34:47.

which is Tracy Austin he will be alongside Nick Mullins here on Court

:34:48.:34:51.

Number One. -- who will be alongside.

:34:52.:35:12.

NICK MULLINS: thank you very much. Good afternoon, everybody and thank

:35:13.:35:24.

you for staying with us on Court One. Our next attraction is one of

:35:25.:35:35.

the main attractions of the fortnight from this championship's

:35:36.:35:39.

perspective. Venus Williams, a second look at her over this

:35:40.:35:48.

fortnight. And it remains the most picture perfect London summer's day.

:35:49.:35:58.

The third day of these championships and it is beautifully warm outside,

:35:59.:36:02.

brought from our broadcast centre out to Court Number One. The most

:36:03.:36:10.

pleasant of walks. TRACY AUSTIN: A perfect summer day.

:36:11.:36:27.

Number one Court. Without its hat on. This summer, as we all know,

:36:28.:36:32.

there is a new roof being put on. It will look very different in a few

:36:33.:36:39.

years' time. Rather like that, when Centre Court was being rebuilt, when

:36:40.:36:46.

its roof is being put on. It's a little bit different. But it will be

:36:47.:36:51.

an even more wonderful Court, Tracy, once it does have a protective cover

:36:52.:36:56.

on in a couple of years. A couple of years before it's completely

:36:57.:36:59.

finished, I'm told. And they're doing such an incredible job. I

:37:00.:37:03.

think they have nine months to work on it, and then they have to take

:37:04.:37:07.

the big cranes than again to get ready and prepped for Wimbledon. --

:37:08.:37:14.

big cranes down. This'll be the second roof at Wimbledon. At the

:37:15.:37:19.

Australian Open they have roofs on three different courts. The US Open,

:37:20.:37:26.

they opened their first roof last year on the Arthur Ashe Stadium,

:37:27.:37:31.

which is quite a project because it is a 23,000 seat stadium. And of

:37:32.:37:35.

course the French Open doesn't have a roof on any stadiums yet, but

:37:36.:37:39.

there are plans for one. Fortunately this year in Paris there wasn't much

:37:40.:37:45.

rain. But it can be a pretty bleak place, Roland Garros, when it is

:37:46.:37:50.

wet. The main court is particularly exposed. But that, too, will have a

:37:51.:37:55.

lid on it before too long. This is what we are looking forward to next.

:37:56.:38:01.

The women's neck second round match between the Chinese Qiang Wang and

:38:02.:38:08.

Venus Williams. Lots of folk here, lots of youngsters for the first

:38:09.:38:12.

time he might be experiencing the magical tournament for the first

:38:13.:38:15.

time. And I dare say watching Venus Williams for the first time. It is

:38:16.:38:22.

on so many people's bucket list, to be able to come to Wimbledon just

:38:23.:38:29.

one time and look at Henman Hill. It's absolutely packed on this

:38:30.:38:34.

glorious afternoon. Verrall gathered in front of the screen, because Andy

:38:35.:38:42.

Murray is on that court, on Centre Court next. -- of a all gathered in

:38:43.:38:49.

front of the screen. The gates opened at half past ten in the

:38:50.:38:52.

morning, and even those with passive that would have been allowed to get

:38:53.:38:56.

onto the outside courts to have nice seats just charge immediately to

:38:57.:39:03.

that area. Well, they charge according to the walls here at

:39:04.:39:06.

Wimbledon. It is a stately march from the gates here at Wimbledon.

:39:07.:39:12.

That screen, as I'm sure you know, is bolted onto the court that we are

:39:13.:39:17.

currently occupying the other side of, Court Number One. Talking of

:39:18.:39:32.

hats... I like his creativity. Venus Williams taking her bag from her

:39:33.:39:37.

coach, David, and wondering out into the sunshine alongside Qiang Wang.

:39:38.:40:11.

Venus Williams, her 20th Wimbledon. Really remarkable. 37 years old now.

:40:12.:40:25.

Yeah, she's been appearing on these lawns for as long as most of us can

:40:26.:40:30.

remember. She was 17 years old when we first saw her here in 1997. And

:40:31.:40:37.

at the age of 37 and watched by her mum, she is the oldest woman in the

:40:38.:40:41.

draw. We can say so many things about Venus Williams, but her draw

:40:42.:40:46.

ability, the fact that she's still here in the year when she's been to

:40:47.:40:51.

a Grand Slam semifinal, let's not forget, in Melbourne, at the start

:40:52.:40:55.

of the year. The way she regenerates herself and keeps coming back

:40:56.:40:58.

year-on-year to be one of the main contenders every year, it seems.

:40:59.:41:03.

Absolutely. Still ranked number 11 in the world. Got to the finals at

:41:04.:41:08.

the Australian Open this year, losing to Serena. That was Serena's

:41:09.:41:14.

23rd major, making history. So nice to see her back in a final once

:41:15.:41:27.

again. Five-time champion here. And getting ready to face the five-time

:41:28.:41:35.

champion am a 25 -year-old Chinese Qiang Wang. The umpire is the

:41:36.:41:52.

Serbian Mariano. She is 25, Qiang, and did her country's the Blessed --

:41:53.:42:09.

and is her country's third-best ranked player. She is one of the

:42:10.:42:14.

compatriots that set out on Monday. Venus, it seems, is in no rush.

:42:15.:42:26.

UMPIRE: 20 seconds in between the points. Try to stay away from

:42:27.:42:30.

bouncing directly in the grass. If you want to challenge, please do it

:42:31.:42:34.

quickly. Any questions? Would you like to call it quits yellow tails.

:42:35.:42:42.

-- would you like to call it? Yellowtail. It is heads.

:42:43.:42:50.

No hesitation. She won the toss, and she will serve. Almost before the

:42:51.:42:54.

coin has settled, she decided that she will be the one who will set the

:42:55.:42:59.

tone for this much. Venus has such an aggressive mind that. As soon as

:43:00.:43:03.

she's that into the All-England Club, steps onto these lawns, she

:43:04.:43:07.

becomes even more aggressive. Which is something that you need to be

:43:08.:43:18.

successful. Five times a singles champion here. Five times between

:43:19.:43:23.

2000 and 2008. The last time she when it was when she beat her sister

:43:24.:43:27.

in the final, and then that wonderful run to the semifinals last

:43:28.:43:31.

summer defying the march of time, as we've been talking about, but she

:43:32.:43:35.

has been doing so often in recent times. Defying another showdown

:43:36.:43:39.

against her sister last summer by Angelique Kerber. -- defied another

:43:40.:43:47.

showdown against her sister. Lost but 6-4, 6-4. -- lost that. And her

:43:48.:43:59.

opponent, who is trying to do something that she's never done so

:44:00.:44:03.

far in her career and reach the third round of the Grand Slam. She

:44:04.:44:07.

has been to the stage, the second round, three times in New York. Once

:44:08.:44:11.

in Melbourne, once in Paris, and once here in London. I think it's

:44:12.:44:15.

safe to say that if she wins this one, this would be the biggest day

:44:16.:44:19.

of her tennis career so far against the great Venus Williams on one of

:44:20.:44:29.

Wimbledon's Big Show courts. Interesting, these two played just

:44:30.:44:32.

recently for the first time at the French Open. That was in the first

:44:33.:44:37.

round. Venus was able to win that in a tight two setter.

:44:38.:44:50.

STUDIO: Well, Venus Williams, five-time champion on Court Number

:44:51.:44:56.

One. We'll be back for the start of her much. Let's show you what is

:44:57.:45:01.

happening elsewhere. Over on Centre Court, Andy Murray has made his way

:45:02.:45:05.

onto court to play his second round match against a real character, the

:45:06.:45:11.

extrovert, the very talented Dustin Brown who beat Rafael Nadal two

:45:12.:45:14.

years ago. As you can see, early stages of that match which is now

:45:15.:45:19.

live on BBC One. If you want to see the defending champion, it is now

:45:20.:45:24.

live on BBC One. This match was the second and centre because of the

:45:25.:45:27.

length of the match before it, involving the British number one

:45:28.:45:31.

woman, Joanna Konta, who fought off a real battle against the

:45:32.:45:40.

21-year-old Croatian, Vecic. Had to come back from 0-30 down to save it.

:45:41.:45:51.

Very emotional scenes as Donna Vekic came so close. Very good for Joe to

:45:52.:45:56.

console her Ribena. In this game that we play in tennis, it is very

:45:57.:46:00.

hard when someone has fought so well and they had to walk off as a loser.

:46:01.:46:05.

But Jo marches on and adhere to the third round for the first time here

:46:06.:46:11.

at Wimbledon. For the first time since 1986 there will be two British

:46:12.:46:14.

women in the third round, because Heather Watson is true. I wonderful

:46:15.:46:20.

victory out on Court Number Two against the 18 fees, Sevastova.

:46:21.:46:26.

Watson showed great promise a couple of years ago and we have expected

:46:27.:46:29.

great things on her. She dropped a little bit down the rankings after

:46:30.:46:33.

that wonderful context against Serena Williams on Centre Court when

:46:34.:46:37.

she had just two points for winning the match. But she seems to be back

:46:38.:46:43.

to her coach. -- back to her best. A new coach, Colin Beecher, seems to

:46:44.:46:46.

be installing confidence and she will be racing her way back up the

:46:47.:46:50.

world rankings once again. Though Heather is through and in the next

:46:51.:46:53.

round on Friday she will face the former world number one, Victoria

:46:54.:46:58.

Azarenka, who came through against the 16th seed Vesnina. Great to see

:46:59.:47:09.

her having a comeback after the birth of her first child last year.

:47:10.:47:13.

So Azarenka against Heather Watson in the third round. And another

:47:14.:47:19.

great British victory here on Wednesday. You may have seen this on

:47:20.:47:27.

BBC Two. Aljaz Bedene has won against his good friend, Dzumhur,

:47:28.:47:35.

Bosnia. -- Bosnia. He beat Ivo Karlovic of the first round. He has

:47:36.:47:41.

another big server in the next, 16 C Gilles Muller. Aljaz Bedene

:47:42.:47:49.

continues him at Wimbledon. -- the 16th seed shall Muller. On Court

:47:50.:47:53.

Number Two this is our future match on the red button which features the

:47:54.:47:58.

former US Open champion Marin Cilic. He was down in this first step to

:47:59.:48:01.

Florian Meyer, they came back when it in the tie-break. -- in this

:48:02.:48:08.

first net. That is on Court Two when you can watch that one on the red

:48:09.:48:16.

button. So, we have Andy Murray on BBC One and Venus Williams here on

:48:17.:48:24.

BBC Two. Back we go. NICK MULLINS: We will be keeping a

:48:25.:48:28.

very close eye on Venus Williams today. Particularly after that press

:48:29.:48:32.

conference, after her win on Monday, Tracy. She was asked about the car

:48:33.:48:36.

crash. I think we all know she was involved in that in Florida recently

:48:37.:48:40.

when a passenger in the other car died. She was invited to add to the

:48:41.:48:45.

statement that she put a previously, but she found it so tough to talk

:48:46.:48:49.

about that she broke down and had to leave the press conference. The

:48:50.:48:52.

accident has resulted in legal proceedings against her. We have no

:48:53.:48:58.

idea how she's feeling, but there must be 1 million emotions going

:48:59.:49:02.

through her mind. Absolutely. I'm for Venus arrived last Tuesday,

:49:03.:49:07.

about eight days ago, in England. It was a couple of days later that the

:49:08.:49:10.

passenger in the other car passed away. That is when the story kind of

:49:11.:49:15.

erupted. So there is a lot on Venus's mind now. The job at hand

:49:16.:49:26.

right now, however, is to win a tennis match at her favourite

:49:27.:49:29.

tournament, in one of her favourite parts of the world. Venus Williams,

:49:30.:49:35.

five times the former champion. She will serve at the start of the

:49:36.:49:37.

second round match on Court One. Looking sharp already. That serve is

:49:38.:50:54.

111, 112 mph. As she has done for such a long time

:50:55.:52:04.

now, she's picking and choosing the events that she plays. She is not

:52:05.:52:09.

overly busy. It has been a long time since she was a regular at all the

:52:10.:52:13.

big tour events during the year. But when she does turn up at events like

:52:14.:52:17.

this, she always seems to be in prime physical shape. This is just

:52:18.:52:21.

her ninth event of the year. I think that 37 it's very smart for Venus to

:52:22.:52:26.

manage her schedule. She's been so consistent throughout 2017. This is

:52:27.:52:34.

the 25-year-old Chinese Qiang Wang. Very consistent. Accurate, moves

:52:35.:52:55.

well. Is she going to have big enough weapons? Well, that serve is

:52:56.:53:04.

her favourite one. The one-hour ride delete macro wide? Yeah. -- the worn

:53:05.:53:09.

out wide. Just a little late on a couple of

:53:10.:53:41.

forehands. Quite interesting, and five foot eight, Wang is on the

:53:42.:53:49.

shorter side these days on the WTA Tour.

:53:50.:54:01.

That they very confident start for the Chinese. A nice hold that will

:54:02.:54:17.

really settles nerves for Wang. A big show courts against five-time

:54:18.:54:18.

former champion. Huge disparity between the second

:54:19.:54:55.

serve and the first served for Venus. That one sitting at 77 mph.

:54:56.:55:28.

One thing we are seeing very early on, Qiang hitting the ball cleanly

:55:29.:55:36.

and hitting its flat and low. And a lobbying the pace from Williams

:55:37.:55:42.

nicely. Keeping her body down low. -- and absorbing the pace from

:55:43.:55:46.

Williams nicely. The second serve is not penetrative.

:55:47.:56:31.

Venus has got to be careful that she doesn't become too predictable on

:56:32.:56:35.

the second serve. She likes to slice it round to the forehand.

:56:36.:57:02.

0-30, Wang had opportunities here. The last three serves in the net.

:57:03.:57:11.

Just needs to stand a little longer. Keep that heads up.

:57:12.:57:27.

She was waiting for it. Waiting for that forehand. You spotted it,

:57:28.:57:40.

seeing the movement. Venus didn't. Talking about that slice serve a

:57:41.:58:07.

Venus, it's helpful to have on the surface. The slice keeps the globe,

:58:08.:58:12.

away from her opponent. But you need to make sure that you mix it up. The

:58:13.:58:14.

slice keeps it low. Venus Williams has come through that

:58:15.:58:38.

challenge and leads on serve 2-1. What kind of changes have you seen

:58:39.:58:42.

in her game, Tracy come if any, over however many years? The last four,

:58:43.:58:49.

five, six? As she has dealt with that march of time. Things that she

:58:50.:58:52.

would have done naturally as a 21-year-old but maybe you can't do

:58:53.:58:57.

as a 37-year-old. Have you seen anything different? Does she do

:58:58.:59:07.

things differently? I think as the game moves on and time moves on

:59:08.:59:11.

every five years, the game improves. And so you have to improve along

:59:12.:59:18.

with that. I think the Venus's forehand is actually better now than

:59:19.:59:21.

it was maybe a decade ago. But that's still the slingshot. That's

:59:22.:59:26.

the shop but he really take the temperature and how confident she

:59:27.:59:29.

is. Whether she's stepping in driving through that side. The

:59:30.:59:34.

backhand is always so technically sound. -- vat the shops where you

:59:35.:59:40.

really take the temperature. The other thing is the willingness,

:59:41.:59:45.

Venus's willingness to move forward. To get the swing volleys and

:59:46.:59:47.

approaches. Beautifully executed volleys.

:59:48.:00:06.

On serve at the start of this second-round match.

:00:07.:00:37.

Those are the types of plays that have helped to win this five times.

:00:38.:00:50.

Big powerful ground strokes. Intercepts the volley. Her coach has

:00:51.:00:52.

been with her almost a decade now. And again. Down low, using the

:00:53.:01:07.

knees. She gets extraordinary power from

:01:08.:01:54.

the backhand. Almost drops down like a lollipop before flying into it.

:01:55.:02:04.

Tremendous technique. Quick take and then accelerates. The motion gets

:02:05.:02:06.

quicker as she makes impact. That is beautiful. These are the

:02:07.:02:31.

types of ground strokes back can be penetrating on grass. Hard, flat,

:02:32.:02:37.

deep. Really moves through this surface.

:02:38.:03:31.

A little frustrated. You will not see much emotion from venous on

:03:32.:04:17.

court. -- from Venus Williams on court.

:04:18.:04:33.

How well did she do from 0-40 to come back and save that service

:04:34.:04:48.

game? She has twice beaten players inside the top 20. Caroline

:04:49.:04:56.

Wozniacki a while ago, and Elena Vesnina a couple of months ago in

:04:57.:04:59.

Rome when she made it to the last 16 on the clay. She came unstuck

:05:00.:05:11.

against that Lana Kuznetsova. -- Svetlana Kuznetsova.

:05:12.:05:47.

That is a shame. It is just out. Magnificent hustling from the

:05:48.:05:56.

Chinese. That was a phenomenal point from both players. This was Venus'

:05:57.:06:05.

pick-up off the return just to stay alive in the point. That was a smart

:06:06.:06:13.

serve. 92 mph. The swing and that slice.

:06:14.:06:21.

The first point she has lost on first serve.

:06:22.:07:17.

Wang. Guaranteed a big television audience back home watching her. Now

:07:18.:07:48.

the third most popular sporting China behind football and

:07:49.:07:53.

basketball. Something like 14 million people playing, so however

:07:54.:07:56.

tidy the percentage is, if you get that fraction of a percentage up to

:07:57.:08:03.

this level you are going to be threatening at some point. I think

:08:04.:08:06.

it goes back to the Beijing Olympics. Looking for gold medals,

:08:07.:08:13.

looking for medal count. She started playing when she was nine years old

:08:14.:08:19.

and so many started. A great programme started. Peter McNamara,

:08:20.:08:28.

two-time Wimbledon champion. A great doubles player. He has been coaching

:08:29.:08:41.

Wang for a while. Won doubles in 1980 and 1982. A great tennis mind.

:08:42.:08:49.

She is more than holding her own non-number one Court. -- on number

:08:50.:08:54.

one quarter. The Chinese did so well, they

:08:55.:09:17.

realised they had to get ramped up quickly because there was not much

:09:18.:09:22.

tennis before the Beijing Olympics. It was decided it was going to be

:09:23.:09:29.

there. Accomplished coaches worked with their juniors. You can see from

:09:30.:09:34.

Wang, her great technique. Simple strokes. Not a lot to go wrong. A

:09:35.:09:41.

nice pop on her first serve. We were watching Japan's Kei

:09:42.:10:08.

Nishikori winning on this court half an hour or so ago. For China, it has

:10:09.:10:14.

been the women's game. That is where they saw profits to be made.

:10:15.:10:31.

A wonderful rally. Tremendous ball striking. So clean. Because of the

:10:32.:10:44.

technique, she is able to hit with a lot of power. The left arm is up.

:10:45.:10:50.

Keeps the upper body in the right position.

:10:51.:11:13.

It must be intimidating, when you are at the opposite end of looking

:11:14.:11:18.

at Venus Williams positioning herself pretty much on the service

:11:19.:11:23.

line. She is almost in the court, even on the first serve. Very

:11:24.:11:28.

aggressive positioning. That is the purpose. Sending the message - I am

:11:29.:11:33.

going to attack this second serve. And she is testing those reflex is.

:11:34.:11:54.

She is banking on herself despite the shorter time period she has to

:11:55.:11:58.

make her mind up, of getting it back, which is what she did just

:11:59.:12:02.

then. When the ball is slower, like that

:12:03.:12:18.

returned, all the way up to the ball on this surface, slower balls. .

:12:19.:13:16.

Break point opportunity for Venus. Wang has saved all four.

:13:17.:13:32.

That is the pressure she exerts. The first break of serve in this opening

:13:33.:13:39.

set for the former champion. That gets to you, when you are

:13:40.:13:53.

always having to save break points. You feel like you're serve is under

:13:54.:14:02.

attack. The scoreline pressure, as well as Venus's return. Venus has

:14:03.:14:07.

not faced break point so far in this match.

:14:08.:14:31.

That ball stopped a bit and then Venus hit too early. Had to make the

:14:32.:14:37.

adjustment. A strange bounce. Two loose points. You can hear

:14:38.:14:58.

Venus's support team - come on, V. Consistent length and questioning

:14:59.:15:55.

from Qiang Wang. Determined not to be driven back. And look at what it

:15:56.:16:01.

has brought her. A couple of break back points.

:16:02.:16:22.

The first break point in this match has come and gone, but she has one

:16:23.:16:25.

more. How well she has done to get herself

:16:26.:17:04.

back into this first set. What hitting from Qiang Wang.

:17:05.:17:17.

You mentioned it earlier. The simplicity of what Qiang Wang is

:17:18.:17:32.

doing. The quality of the ball striking and consistency. The

:17:33.:17:36.

consistency of each stroke. Very simple. Not a huge take-back. Great

:17:37.:17:44.

footwork, getting herself in the correct position, driving through

:17:45.:17:48.

the contact point and quickly recovering. Very alert. When you use

:17:49.:17:56.

the lower body like Wang does, you can absorb the pace and get the

:17:57.:18:00.

quick racket take-back. To absorb the pace of a Venus Williams shot.

:18:01.:18:09.

What she does well also on a surface she is not particularly familiar

:18:10.:18:14.

with is getting the footwork right. She is balanced and in the right

:18:15.:18:19.

position for they shots. Enormously impressive. You need to get down, in

:18:20.:18:25.

case there is a bad bounce at the last second, you can make the subtle

:18:26.:18:26.

adjustment. New balls and back on serve in the

:18:27.:18:58.

set. Great demeanour from Wang. She gets her serve broken and stays even

:18:59.:19:02.

keeled and breaks back. Did not get disappointed.

:19:03.:19:24.

There is certainly a feeling that when you are watching Venus or

:19:25.:19:31.

Sabena, the moment there are a potent shows any sign of frailty,

:19:32.:19:35.

that they are beginning to doubt themselves, that is when problems

:19:36.:19:36.

rack up. Wang has not shown that. A little bit too much air under the

:19:37.:20:57.

drop shot from Qiang Wang. Wow, that is great racket work from

:20:58.:21:43.

Williams. She did a great job of fighting off

:21:44.:22:41.

the first two bullets from Venus. You get so little time to reposition

:22:42.:22:45.

yourself immediately after the serve to get set for the return. She did

:22:46.:22:47.

so well. We are under the flight path today.

:22:48.:23:22.

Every couple of minutes planes will be popping over.

:23:23.:23:31.

They diverted at Flushing Meadows in New York. The flight path tends to

:23:32.:23:39.

stay away from the tennis. Most of the time, unless the wind changes

:23:40.:23:44.

and they have to to fly over Arthur Ashe Stadium.

:23:45.:24:02.

UMPIRE: Miss Wang is challenging the core. This is a big moment. It will

:24:03.:24:09.

be a break point. If you come up with the A 's, that

:24:10.:24:25.

works. -- the ace. That will do. She has a nice fluid service game.

:24:26.:24:58.

Really pushes off with her legs very well and picks up speed as she goes

:24:59.:25:01.

to hit. This is a tightly contested half an

:25:02.:25:30.

hour. Four games each. Tremendous step on the return. --

:25:31.:26:06.

depth on the return. It is a very short take-back. Uses the power.

:26:07.:26:12.

Keeps the body low and pushes forward.

:26:13.:26:17.

A split step from Wang right as Venus hit the ball. Good balance.

:26:18.:27:20.

Tried to go around the post. A couple of these ground strokes from

:27:21.:27:32.

Williams have lost a little of their length, giving Wang an opportunity

:27:33.:27:33.

to get on balance. How significant might that be? She

:27:34.:27:48.

has broken and walks back to the chair a game away from taking the

:27:49.:27:50.

first set. She has looked totally unflustered.

:27:51.:28:10.

It says a lot for the work Peter McNamara has done with her, but it

:28:11.:28:15.

says an awful lot about her self-confidence. Absolutely and to

:28:16.:28:19.

have somebody like Peter McNamara in her camp, a former top-10 player who

:28:20.:28:24.

has played on this court, played big matches, for her to ask questions

:28:25.:28:28.

about emotions and nerves and tactics. She has handled herself

:28:29.:28:35.

beautifully. Broken to go down 4-2 and she stayed with the game plan.

:28:36.:28:42.

She did not get distraught. Now, three games in a row for Qiang Wang

:28:43.:28:51.

and Venus has lost a little bit of intensity. She needs to pick up the

:28:52.:28:54.

weight of her shot again and keep Qiang Wang on her back foot. It

:28:55.:29:01.

remains the most glorious afternoon. Once more, Venus doing things in her

:29:02.:29:18.

own time. The change of racket. She has work to do to stay in this first

:29:19.:29:20.

set. A long serve for the second set.

:29:21.:29:53.

Wasn't able to get across the finish line, let's see if she has learned

:29:54.:29:55.

from that. Heavy, heavy second serve into the

:29:56.:30:18.

body. That is a smart play, when you are playing Venus, six foot one.

:30:19.:31:09.

She continues to pick out the winners. She has got two points for

:31:10.:31:14.

the set. She is halfway towards what would be

:31:15.:31:53.

the biggest day of her tennis life. She has won the first set. SUE

:31:54.:32:02.

BARKER: Are we in for another surprise? Will the tenth seed be the

:32:03.:32:09.

tenth to go? What a comeback in that first set. We will be back in a

:32:10.:32:14.

moment. Meanwhile, this match is on Centre Court.

:32:15.:32:32.

Marin Cilic is serving at match point against Florian Mayer. He was

:32:33.:32:38.

a break at serve down in the first set but came back to win it in a

:32:39.:32:50.

tie-break. He is through in three sets. And a rather controversial

:32:51.:33:01.

match that finished out on court 16. Ruben Bemelmans won it, the Belgian.

:33:02.:33:09.

His opponent very unhappy, he had about five overalls from the umpire.

:33:10.:33:18.

He lost five games in a row and lost that set six games to three and

:33:19.:33:23.

after the celebrations, this happened. He got the wallet out and

:33:24.:33:27.

started throwing coins as the umpire got down from his chair. We will no

:33:28.:33:34.

doubt hear more about that and he will be involved in what promises to

:33:35.:33:37.

be a rather interesting press conference. We will keep you

:33:38.:33:42.

up-to-date. Act we go to this story unfolding on Court One.

:33:43.:34:20.

Absolutely loved that serve because that is Venus's least favourite

:34:21.:34:26.

serve out wide. Stayed up and into her serve, much

:34:27.:34:40.

better than the last two first serves.

:34:41.:35:12.

So typical of what Venus Williams has done over the years. Dropped the

:35:13.:35:18.

first set and then comes out with such a dominant service game at the

:35:19.:35:23.

start of the third. Astonishing effort at the start of this year to

:35:24.:35:28.

reach the final of the Australian Open. Lost in the end to her sister

:35:29.:35:32.

Serena but it kind of set her up for the year. She had semifinals in

:35:33.:35:40.

Miami, lost the Johanna Konta. All of that earned her enough ranking

:35:41.:35:44.

points to break back into the world's top ten again. All of those

:35:45.:35:49.

who thought perhaps her best years were behind her, a few years ago,

:35:50.:35:54.

suddenly having to refocus and look at her as a top ten player again.

:35:55.:36:10.

What a story at the Australian Open. 35-year-old Roger Federer taking the

:36:11.:36:21.

title and 35-year-old Serena Williams. Venus at the time was 36.

:36:22.:36:28.

Really extending the life of tennis players and their mentality.

:36:29.:36:42.

About a decade ago, players would get to 30 and there would be talk of

:36:43.:36:51.

retirement. If they hadn't retired, the rest would be asking them about

:36:52.:36:52.

it! Venus has just turned 37. Increasingly, certainly on the

:36:53.:37:12.

tennis court, life feels pretty good when you are in your 30s. Both the

:37:13.:37:18.

men and women's side of things. It pays to be a 30-something.

:37:19.:37:37.

Nice timing on that return. Venus standing so close, hitting the ball

:37:38.:37:42.

early. Qiang Wang is 25. Some early issues at the start of

:37:43.:37:59.

this second set. That is David Witt, with the dark

:38:00.:38:57.

cap on the right-hand side, Venus' coach.

:38:58.:39:06.

Venus threatened to come forward and I think it was that distraction that

:39:07.:39:16.

Wang saw, made him miss queue on that forehand.

:39:17.:39:32.

Qiang Wang has been incredible and she has faced break points. So

:39:33.:39:47.

sturdy, mentally. Once again, under enormous pressure,

:39:48.:40:25.

she would stand it. She saved seven of eight rate points. Also

:40:26.:40:28.

incredible that Wang has not played a grass court lead up event. The

:40:29.:40:33.

last tournament she played at, was Paris, she lost in the first round.

:40:34.:40:38.

It is a long time to go without a tournament match, about five weeks.

:40:39.:40:46.

Most people feel the need, and she has never won a match at Wimbledon

:40:47.:40:54.

for this year. People feel the need to play some

:40:55.:41:04.

leader events because grass court season is show short. It is such an

:41:05.:41:07.

awkward surface to play on. These two are playing so quickly

:41:08.:41:23.

between points. Looking strong behind her serve

:41:24.:41:38.

again, Venus Williams. I think people are really enjoying

:41:39.:42:26.

what we are seeing. We know all about Venus, we know less about

:42:27.:42:38.

Qiang Wang. What a contest she has helped to make this.

:42:39.:42:48.

Qiang Wang giving Venus Williams a right old battle on Court Number

:42:49.:42:56.

One. Lena made the big splash, two times Grand Slam champion.

:42:57.:43:30.

That loopy shot does not work well on this surface. On clay, it is more

:43:31.:43:39.

beneficial because the label grip on the surface and bounce up high. But

:43:40.:43:44.

here, an uncomfortable position for Wang to punish it.

:43:45.:43:54.

Coming to the net and winning the point. On this surface, you are

:43:55.:44:04.

looking for more big, powerful, flat strokes, slices are affected. --

:44:05.:44:08.

effective. Mixed up her serves beautifully.

:44:09.:44:33.

That was a second serve. Got Williams.

:44:34.:44:41.

She told us coming into this that she likes her serve and we should

:44:42.:44:45.

look out for it. She is forcing errors from Venus

:44:46.:44:59.

Williams, former champion. Chinese tennis learning how to fly

:45:00.:45:19.

again without Li Na over the past few years. She created such waves,

:45:20.:45:25.

winning those Grand Slams. Finalist tier three times. So much press, in

:45:26.:45:33.

China, so much interest. That's the way. We haven't seen that

:45:34.:45:53.

enough. More aggression. More venom on that ground stroke at the sharp

:45:54.:45:55.

angle. She has to continue to look to take

:45:56.:46:44.

the initiative. Talked about how she eased herself

:46:45.:47:11.

back into the world top ten, third oldest player in W TE history.

:47:12.:47:18.

Joining Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to be a top ten player

:47:19.:47:22.

at that age. You bumped into one of your old markers on the way out of

:47:23.:47:28.

this court. How would Chrissy have faced this challenge? How would you

:47:29.:47:35.

have played Venus Williams? What would you have done? It is just such

:47:36.:47:41.

a different game today. So much power. Venus in my opinion is the

:47:42.:47:45.

first player to be six foot one and so agile. The Williams sisters

:47:46.:47:52.

together were the first to be able to be so offensive from a defensive

:47:53.:47:58.

position. The strength, the way they have so much power. They really

:47:59.:48:05.

forced the rest of the tour to spend more time in the gym, to get

:48:06.:48:14.

quicker. To have bigger serves. Every five or ten years, you see the

:48:15.:48:19.

huge improvement and therefore, at 37, I think Venus is a better player

:48:20.:48:24.

than she was when she was 19 or 20. You just have too, in order to keep

:48:25.:48:26.

up. That is just great scrambling from

:48:27.:50:02.

Wang. Tremendous pace. We have been talking, she hasn't

:50:03.:50:32.

played that much on grass, hasn't had a talk on grass in the build-up

:50:33.:50:36.

to this, but one of the things that is noticeable is how she improvises

:50:37.:50:40.

on those shots that she just has to play. They may not come naturally

:50:41.:50:44.

but it gets the ball back over the net and she's doing that

:50:45.:50:49.

brilliantly. On this surface more than any other, those improv skills

:50:50.:50:53.

are necessary. Keep yourself in a point, there is an awkward bounce.

:50:54.:51:01.

A little slow moving to that backhand for Venus.

:51:02.:51:55.

Danger zone here. Didn't push forward into that shocked, she

:51:56.:52:06.

backed off. -- didn't push forward into that shocked. -- shot.

:52:07.:52:19.

That was a brave second serve. The slice went right into the body of

:52:20.:52:27.

Wang. Once again, what can you say about

:52:28.:52:59.

how Wang is playing? Hunting down the point from one end of the court

:53:00.:53:01.

to the other. At what point does she start to

:53:02.:53:25.

think about the doorstep she is on? Very important she doesn't think

:53:26.:53:26.

about it. Couple of brilliant serves from

:53:27.:53:52.

Venus Williams back against the wall. That second serve out to the

:53:53.:54:00.

backhand is her least favourite but she went for it.

:54:01.:54:17.

SUE BARKER: That really was a tense time but great champions find a way

:54:18.:55:00.

to win when they are down in a game. Venus is now back and front in this

:55:01.:55:05.

set and hanging on. We will leave this night and head to Centre Court

:55:06.:55:09.

for Andy Murray. You can continue watching on the red button.

:55:10.:55:21.

Let's join our commentators on Centre Court, Tim Henman, John

:55:22.:55:25.

McEnroe and Mark Petchey. A wayward forehand from Dustin Brown

:55:26.:55:33.

opens the door for Andy Murray. Not the cleanest return he has

:55:34.:55:52.

struck all day but still pretty effective.

:55:53.:56:01.

That was extremely disappointing. Dustin Brown sort of faded. Not

:56:02.:56:09.

really making a good effort at that moment. The legs just gave out.

:56:10.:56:15.

Looks like he might be weary, doesn't seem to have the spring that

:56:16.:56:22.

I've seen in the times I have watched him play. Andy Murray really

:56:23.:56:30.

looking sharp. He has put up with what Brown has to offer. For the

:56:31.:56:32.

most part, not pressed. That is Jamie Delgado, he will be

:56:33.:57:26.

happy with how Murray has been getting round the court. He looked

:57:27.:57:29.

sharp in practice, prior to the tournament.

:57:30.:57:47.

Big target, simple backswing. Maybe he could have done a bit more of

:57:48.:58:03.

that. Are you implying Brown should have

:58:04.:58:18.

taken more risks today? I don't think that's a risk, it is a big

:58:19.:58:22.

target and he has hit it up the line with a backhand, that, to me, is not

:58:23.:58:28.

a risk. That's how people can win them or are winning the matches.

:58:29.:58:47.

I don't know if he is a bit weary from his last match where he had to

:58:48.:58:56.

come from behind but as this match has progressed, he seems to be

:58:57.:59:01.

struggling with the spring in his legs. Explosion not really there. A

:59:02.:59:07.

bit of physical and mental fatigue. He will be happy with his pace,

:59:08.:59:59.

averaging 120 mph on his first serve. Didn't match that on any of

:00:00.:00:06.

his matches on his race to the title last year.

:00:07.:00:27.

He never does the same thing twice, Brown. You felt like, that first

:00:28.:00:35.

point is good, let's try it until Murray counters that. Don't do the

:00:36.:00:40.

thing that worked! Too easy! It was a pretty late challenge. An

:00:41.:01:11.

awful long time. Too long. I don't think it will matter, but...

:01:12.:01:58.

I think he is challenging to slow down Brown a little.

:01:59.:02:24.

It looks like he has another match scheduled tonight. Some exhibition

:02:25.:02:28.

somewhere! When it works, it is certainly

:02:29.:02:44.

entertaining. We talk about good length in tennis.

:02:45.:03:00.

Again, going back to his win over Rafa, 50% of his balls inside the

:03:01.:03:08.

service line and ended up winning the match, so he defies convention

:03:09.:03:11.

in terms of how you think about the game at times.

:03:12.:03:49.

The perfect return against the incoming player.

:03:50.:03:58.

I think a lot of it has to do with the quality Murray's playing. But he

:03:59.:04:09.

has tapped out. In the last half-hour, it looks like he is

:04:10.:04:14.

playing, if possibly, even faster than in the beginning. And the legs

:04:15.:04:18.

seem to have gone so he cannot move to the ball which makes the lower

:04:19.:04:22.

percentage shots more difficult and risky. There is where you have a

:04:23.:04:30.

beating taking place on Centre Court. A couple more games may be,

:04:31.:04:41.

an extra one for Dustin Brown. Fabio Fognini. They have not met on a

:04:42.:04:47.

grass court before. That is who will be waiting for Andy Murray. Murray

:04:48.:04:57.

Fabio Fognini on the clay court, a different kettle of fish but Murray

:04:58.:05:02.

on this surface, playing at this level, including beating Murray. Did

:05:03.:05:12.

he beat him in Davis Cup? Andy beat him. Happy to be playing him on

:05:13.:05:19.

grass. No question. Always guarding against any

:05:20.:06:21.

complacency, Murray. The first moment relapse of

:06:22.:06:58.

concentration. Murray must have heard asked talking about Fabio

:06:59.:07:03.

Fognini in the next round. -- heard us.

:07:04.:07:31.

Exactly. After two doubles to come up with that.

:07:32.:08:16.

No question that Dustin Brown remains true to his beliefs about

:08:17.:08:23.

how he wants to play this game. It has been a colourful journey, as

:08:24.:08:24.

well, to the professional ranks. The camper van his parents bought

:08:25.:08:35.

him at the age of 20 so he could travel around Europe and save on

:08:36.:08:37.

accommodation costs. He will be staying in slightly

:08:38.:09:17.

better accommodation, Dustin Brown, given the success he has had in

:09:18.:09:22.

recent years, but a shorter stay in the capital than he would have

:09:23.:09:26.

liked. And a shorter stay on Centre Court that he would have liked, as

:09:27.:09:28.

well. The hour and 30-minute mark takes

:09:29.:10:42.

over on Centre Court. The drop shot out of trouble out

:10:43.:11:03.

wide. He gave it away, you could see him coming. It is not often you see

:11:04.:11:16.

a match half the length of a women's match. Johanna Konta and Donna Vekic

:11:17.:11:25.

played three hours and ten minutes. That is the Mercy held. -- mercy

:11:26.:11:49.

hold. Murray has come in and done exactly what he needed to do. When

:11:50.:11:54.

you see the top guns do that you get more comfortable on their chances

:11:55.:11:57.

and he is back close to where he wants to be to have a shot at

:11:58.:12:07.

winning this. Two matches ideal. The first-round under his belt after

:12:08.:12:11.

ordinary preparation coming into the event and a step up in class against

:12:12.:12:15.

Dustin Brown, a dangerous, in theory, opponents. To win in

:12:16.:12:22.

straight sets is a good foundation moving forward. Do you think there

:12:23.:12:29.

is a big difference in the speed of the courts here and at Queen's? I

:12:30.:12:36.

think there is a big difference. Last year, it is interesting, there

:12:37.:12:44.

was talk about the courts playing quicker. When you look at rally

:12:45.:12:50.

lengths. Four at Queen's and five and at times six for Murray here at

:12:51.:12:56.

Wimbledon. Whether that makes a difference for Murray in terms of

:12:57.:12:59.

getting through. Huge success at Queen's. He has won it more than

:13:00.:13:05.

anyone else. I do not know if that matters a whole lot. And it does not

:13:06.:13:13.

matter even now that he lost in the first round.

:13:14.:13:17.

I do not think that will have much of an impact on what happens at this

:13:18.:13:21.

Wimbledon. The body serve. Able to take a nice,

:13:22.:14:12.

free swing at the ball. Murray kept in the point. Made him

:14:13.:14:59.

suffer. No need to do that at this stage.

:15:00.:15:05.

It has been a swift dismissal of the challenge from the German.

:15:06.:16:09.

That is how he started it and that is how he ends it with the drop shot

:16:10.:16:23.

return. Murray with a big smile. Not just delighted to get through but

:16:24.:16:27.

the sort of match he would enjoy being a part. The outcome was never

:16:28.:16:33.

in doubt. Lovely moments from Dustin Brown, but Murray were simply out

:16:34.:16:43.

there. He was going to give you a level that he assumed was correct

:16:44.:16:52.

that Brown could not hang with. Brown came out strong and was doing

:16:53.:16:56.

a lot of good things and playing the as well as he could but could not

:16:57.:17:02.

make much of an impact, down 3-4 and that was when Murray took it up

:17:03.:17:06.

another gear and from that point, when he broke out the new balls, it

:17:07.:17:13.

became extremely one-sided. He is one of those guys you would say you

:17:14.:17:18.

do not really want to play, but after you have played him and beaten

:17:19.:17:24.

him as convincingly as Murray has, that is when the big smile comes out

:17:25.:17:28.

on the face. You know, that was all right. Thank you.

:17:29.:17:44.

And he will have thoroughly enjoyed his time out there. It is a rare

:17:45.:17:50.

occurrence for these players to get out on Centre Court. He was not

:17:51.:17:59.

expected to win and to be honest he was outclassed for the large

:18:00.:18:03.

majority, but got the opportunity to play the world's best player at

:18:04.:18:09.

Wimbledon and it has been a wonderful journey for Dustin Brown

:18:10.:18:12.

to get to the professional ranks. A fairly unique one and a unique brand

:18:13.:18:21.

of tennis. Murray on Friday against the Italian, Fabio Fognini. That

:18:22.:18:28.

would be downright normal. Fabio Fognini is a character in his own

:18:29.:18:32.

right, but compared to Brown, he is pretty much a monk out there. The

:18:33.:18:40.

style is totally different. Flashy, expressive, emotional. He plays

:18:41.:18:48.

fast, at times. You do not know what is going to happen. Certainly grass

:18:49.:18:56.

will be his least favourite surface, Fabio Fognini, coming into that

:18:57.:18:57.

match. Brown had opportunities, which will

:18:58.:19:10.

be the only thing Murray will be concerned about, first serve

:19:11.:19:16.

percentage is under 50%. But apart from that, it was perfection on

:19:17.:19:20.

Centre Court once again. We will be hearing from the winner of that

:19:21.:19:24.

second round match. Andy Murray will be chatting.

:19:25.:19:32.

Well done. By the levels of unpredictability being predicted for

:19:33.:19:39.

this match, how straightforward was that? After the beginning... He

:19:40.:19:43.

started very well and was coming up with great drop volleys Andrew Ni

:19:44.:19:51.

going for the returns. Once I got the break in the first set I felt

:19:52.:19:56.

momentum was with me and I saw the shots he was going to play quicker

:19:57.:19:59.

which allowed me to get to some of the drop volleys and come up with

:20:00.:20:05.

passing shots and I played well. What pleased you most. Until right

:20:06.:20:14.

at the end of the match, the last three games, I did not serve well

:20:15.:20:18.

but the rest of the match I served well and got three points. He was

:20:19.:20:25.

not able to attack my second serve and so that was positive. I moved

:20:26.:20:32.

pretty well against guys who played drop shots and come forward you need

:20:33.:20:36.

to move well and I did that. There is no hip under more scrutiny than

:20:37.:20:44.

yours. How is it? It is OK. I have moved well the first couple of

:20:45.:20:49.

matches and it has not affected me. I have had good practices. I feel

:20:50.:20:54.

good. Hopefully it will stay that way. So far, I am happy with how I

:20:55.:21:01.

feel. You have dropped seven games so far. How pleased you with that?

:21:02.:21:09.

Against two guys who have tough game styles. Not easy to read. I did

:21:10.:21:16.

pretty well. I concentrated well on my own service games which is

:21:17.:21:21.

positive, and put a lot of returns back in play, which was positive

:21:22.:21:27.

today. I returned better. It has been a good start and hopefully

:21:28.:21:30.

we'll keep it going. Well done. Thank you.

:21:31.:21:36.

SUE BARKER: It has been a good start and this was a tricky match. Dustin

:21:37.:21:42.

Brown plays unbelievable attacking tennis but Murray stamped his

:21:43.:21:45.

authority on the match to win in straight sets in one hour and 36

:21:46.:21:51.

minutes. That is half the time Jo Konta was on court against Donna

:21:52.:21:59.

Vekic. All going well. The defending champion is through. Boris, that is

:22:00.:22:04.

the way to do it. He looked strong. We argued Monday morning how fit is

:22:05.:22:09.

he? Can he handle the physical problems he apparently has. A couple

:22:10.:22:16.

of days later he is looking strong. He is playing good tennis. Difficult

:22:17.:22:21.

opponents, you do not get a rhythm, and he handle both with brilliance.

:22:22.:22:28.

Can we officially call him a limpless Murray? In the points. But

:22:29.:22:34.

in between the points he looks like he has a limp going on. When you saw

:22:35.:22:40.

him reacting, moving forward, Dustin Brown hitting drop shots. It puts

:22:41.:22:46.

stress on his joints. To see Murray moving well is a good sign and to

:22:47.:22:51.

see how consistently he served. He was not thrilled with the last

:22:52.:22:55.

couple of service games but he only lost ten points on serve in three

:22:56.:23:01.

sets, a great foundation on a grass court and to come through both

:23:02.:23:03.

matches in straight sets is a good start. We do not worry

:23:04.:23:19.

about how he walks between the points. During the points he was

:23:20.:23:20.

getting everything. He looked strong. Before the match... Dustin

:23:21.:23:23.

Brown is accomplished on grass. He likes the big stage. I thought it

:23:24.:23:26.

could be a real match but once Andy started breaking Brown's serve it

:23:27.:23:34.

was a one-way street. He looked in top form. Even Ivan Lendl will be

:23:35.:23:41.

happy, Tim? That is asking a lot! He might be happy but he will not start

:23:42.:23:46.

smiling at. When you come into a tournament with aches and pains.

:23:47.:23:52.

Over two weeks. Five set matches, he did not want to get stuck into an

:23:53.:23:58.

epic match, spending extra time out. To dominate and come through a

:23:59.:24:02.

tricky opponent is a good sign but the challenges will get greater

:24:03.:24:07.

moving forward for Murray. We talked about needing matches under his belt

:24:08.:24:12.

having not had matches coming into Wimbledon. He has had it now. For

:24:13.:24:16.

him the tournament looks different than it did on Monday. Fabio

:24:17.:24:23.

Fognini, different style, the baseline, longer rallies. But we

:24:24.:24:27.

should not talk about the hip. I do not think he has a problem. In the

:24:28.:24:32.

interview he said he was moving well. We should focus on the

:24:33.:24:37.

strengths, not the physical weakness. I will try, but I think

:24:38.:24:41.

the hip will get a mention on Friday. Fabio Fognini, he had

:24:42.:24:47.

trouble with him on clay but should be OK on the grass? The surface is

:24:48.:24:54.

defining. They played six times, 3-3. He beat him in Davis Cup and in

:24:55.:25:00.

Rome in the Masters Series. It helps Fabio Fognini, he knows he has

:25:01.:25:04.

beaten Murray before but they have never played on grass and with

:25:05.:25:08.

Murray's grass court pedigree and the support of the crowd, he should

:25:09.:25:15.

be OK. What a day for the Brits. Four through to the third round, the

:25:16.:25:21.

first time in 20 years. To see Jo Konta playing in difficult

:25:22.:25:29.

circumstances as well as she did, playing Donna Vekic, who she lost

:25:30.:25:32.

two in the final at Nottingham, that will be good for her confidence.

:25:33.:25:34.

Aljaz Bedene doing well. Heather Watson has found form. A good run at

:25:35.:25:41.

Eastbourne beating top players. It has given us something to smile

:25:42.:25:45.

about. We are waiting Rafael Nadal, he is next on this court. But we can

:25:46.:25:52.

show you what is happening elsewhere. Venus Williams has taken

:25:53.:25:58.

the second set 6-4 and is a break of serve up in the third set. That is

:25:59.:26:04.

the featured match on the red button.

:26:05.:26:11.

Petra Kvitova has just left the court. This is her opponent, Madison

:26:12.:26:20.

Brengle, who has a leading head-to-head 2-1 against Kvitova,

:26:21.:26:26.

and she has taken the opening set. Trouble for Petra Kvitova as she

:26:27.:26:31.

continues her comeback. You can follow that on the BBC Sport

:26:32.:26:32.

website. We are ready for our third match on

:26:33.:26:41.

Centre Court, featuring Rafa Nadal the resurgent Rafa is back as he

:26:42.:26:48.

showed in round one. # Don't call it a comeback. Listen

:26:49.:26:58.

to the base go boom. COMMENTATOR: That is the way to do

:26:59.:27:13.

it. # I'm going to take this city by

:27:14.:27:59.

storm and I'm just getting warm. That is Rafa Nadal, a man who is

:28:00.:28:03.

short of grass court tennis. Beware the rest.

:28:04.:28:10.

He was in awesome form. Tim has departed. I think he had a committee

:28:11.:28:15.

meeting or something. Pat Cash is here. Lovely of you to join us. John

:28:16.:28:21.

Millman was watching a lot of big shots going past in that match. John

:28:22.:28:29.

is a great solid tour player. He has had injuries. He has done well over

:28:30.:28:36.

John, over the years, an Australian battler who has come through. He has

:28:37.:28:40.

had injuries and this was a bit out of his league but Rafa, it is the

:28:41.:28:47.

unknown. There are many unknowns in the tournament but how is Rafa going

:28:48.:28:51.

to be if he gets through the first week? It is enticing.

:28:52.:28:57.

Dangerous. We will see how he goes today. Donald Young is a tricky

:28:58.:29:02.

player, playing his best tennis and he should be a good grass court

:29:03.:29:07.

player. He has a tricky left-handed serve. He reminds me of Marcelo

:29:08.:29:15.

Rios. Rafa looks like a prize fighter, keen to get out on Centre

:29:16.:29:19.

Court. Come on, let me get out there! He must be full of

:29:20.:29:25.

confidence. The highlight of his year, his tenth title at the French

:29:26.:29:30.

Open. This is all the gravy coming. He will get a big cheer, I am sure.

:29:31.:29:33.

CHEERING Yes, a huge ovation for both

:29:34.:29:52.

players. Rafa is a popular player all over the world and it has been

:29:53.:29:57.

incredible the comeback of Rafa and Roger Federer when eight months ago

:29:58.:30:01.

we were thinking where they would be and they are playing their best

:30:02.:30:06.

tennis. Last year with Roger going out in the semifinal and he not even

:30:07.:30:10.

playing because of injury, we thought we had seen the best of them

:30:11.:30:14.

and 12 months on, they are the best players of the year so far. Roger

:30:15.:30:21.

from points this year, he is number one and Rafa is number two. It is

:30:22.:30:25.

great to have them back at the top of the game. Carlos Moya is working

:30:26.:30:31.

with Rafa and said he is trying to keep him off the court because he is

:30:32.:30:35.

such a workhorse, he wants to be out there hours. He said he wants him to

:30:36.:30:43.

be more aggressive. He does work, you have never seen anyone work as

:30:44.:30:48.

hard as Rafa. All top players work hard, but he gets satisfaction and

:30:49.:30:52.

confidence by getting a lot of balls. Now he has the confidence and

:30:53.:30:57.

is hitting cleanly... Watcher was different, injured but still

:30:58.:31:03.

performed well in Grand Slams. Rafa almost disappeared for two years. It

:31:04.:31:09.

looks like he was on the way out. Roger, OK, he got injured and we did

:31:10.:31:15.

not know how he would come back. He hits the ball cleanly. He came back

:31:16.:31:20.

with an amazing performance in the Australian Open. For rapporteur

:31:21.:31:24.

comeback like this, I was thinking I do not want to see this champion

:31:25.:31:29.

fading away. He is not hitting the ball cleanly, his serve is not as

:31:30.:31:35.

good. He is not as quick as he was, and to turn around, six months, he

:31:36.:31:40.

is one guy who constantly proves me wrong. I get it wrong quite a lot!

:31:41.:31:43.

He does it all the time to be. Toni Nadal got a lot of stick from

:31:44.:31:50.

people. Rafa Nadal today has a different

:31:51.:32:07.

serve, he plays more aggressive, he is a different player than he was

:32:08.:32:13.

two years ago. If it is possible, it is almost as if he has got more

:32:14.:32:18.

racket head speed. That is hard to believe. He has added some weight to

:32:19.:32:23.

his racket. That will give you more power. As long as you can swing it.

:32:24.:32:27.

If it gets too heavy so you can't swing it, then you have got

:32:28.:32:32.

problems. Rafa has a decent bicep on him! Ten grams extract doesn't sound

:32:33.:32:40.

like much but it is actually quite significant. He said his second

:32:41.:32:48.

serve was chewed up by Federer. Certainly in the spring at Indian

:32:49.:32:52.

wells and in Miami. Roger was hitting winner after winner. I think

:32:53.:32:57.

he realised that he needed to up it a little bit. Otherwise these guys

:32:58.:33:02.

will start chewing up my second serve. A little bit of extra power

:33:03.:33:08.

and weight on the racket has seemed to have worked. What about Donald

:33:09.:33:13.

Young? Playing really good tennis. How will he heard Rafa? He has had

:33:14.:33:20.

one of the better years of his career. A bit too much pressure

:33:21.:33:26.

early on. He has had a nice year so far. He played last week. He lost

:33:27.:33:35.

the Novak Djokovic in semifinals. He has put together a nice round and he

:33:36.:33:38.

is no slouch, this will be a proper match. It certainly will be. He was

:33:39.:33:44.

a junior champion here at Wimbledon and he so far hasn't fulfilled his

:33:45.:33:50.

potential at this tournament. From the United States, Donald Young.

:33:51.:33:55.

Donald Young said he wanted to win all Grand Slams more than once. It

:33:56.:34:00.

was no flight of fancy. The American had just won the prestigious 2003

:34:01.:34:07.

under 16 orange bowl. I really like playing. It feels good. By 16, a

:34:08.:34:14.

number one junior in the world. He won Wimbledon junior title in 2005.

:34:15.:34:24.

With success came the deserved hype, endorsements and agents. Young was

:34:25.:34:31.

labelled the sport's next superstar. It was not to be. He is about to

:34:32.:34:37.

turn 28 and yet his career and world ranking in men's tennis is 38. He

:34:38.:34:42.

represented the US in the Davis Cup but only in the second round of

:34:43.:34:49.

Wimbledon for the second time in seven attempts. Young the younger

:34:50.:34:56.

was a formidable talent of amazing potential, we are left to wonder why

:34:57.:35:01.

Young the elder has not fulfilled that promise. Perhaps him most of

:35:02.:35:02.

all. You were both outstanding juniors

:35:03.:35:11.

and it is tough when you get pressure on you at such a young age.

:35:12.:35:22.

I was fortunate that I Coober Pedy Mane's -- I was fortunate that I

:35:23.:35:27.

could play in the men's at 16 and 17. You are supposed to earn your

:35:28.:35:32.

money on the court, not off the court. He is unfortunately a player

:35:33.:35:43.

who sets an example for what not to do. He is a nice guy. He really

:35:44.:35:50.

tries hard. He did carve a nice career out of professional

:35:51.:35:54.

sponsorship. I think he thought it would be an easy run through.

:35:55.:36:01.

He lost the fight. You could see him throwing his racket, screaming at

:36:02.:36:18.

his team and his box and he really didn't have the heart or the ticket

:36:19.:36:22.

for the fight. I think he is warming to the fact that it is not an easy

:36:23.:36:26.

run for him and he has to dig deep. He has won some good matches lately.

:36:27.:36:32.

Typically you would say, against Donald Young, if you hang in there,

:36:33.:36:34.

he will melt down. Where can he hurt Rafa? Rafa is a

:36:35.:36:51.

big practice horse so he loves to practice on the main court and he

:36:52.:36:56.

can't do that here. So little bit of adjustment. Young is good

:36:57.:37:00.

all-rounder. He has played a tournament before, he has more

:37:01.:37:04.

matches than Rafa. Young will be comfortable right away and Rafa will

:37:05.:37:09.

find his time to get comfortable. He has a good, sneaky left-handed

:37:10.:37:12.

serve. I could see why he had been regarded

:37:13.:37:22.

as the next big thing. He has a big shot. If Rafa gets to the net, Rafa

:37:23.:37:32.

will have too much power. The first set could tell us how long the match

:37:33.:37:37.

will last. You know this tennis court very well, it does look like

:37:38.:37:43.

it is playing quite Sloane. That's Max

:37:44.:37:51.

with the Rafa footwork, you see him may be sliding on the side of it, so

:37:52.:38:00.

it will be interesting to feels more comfortable in the first couple of

:38:01.:38:06.

games. Rafa says it is about getting set for his shots when he doesn't

:38:07.:38:09.

feel comfortable with his footwork. He hasn't felt comfortable on grass

:38:10.:38:15.

for a few years. It will be interesting, I think you will be

:38:16.:38:21.

determined to change that. I've been reflecting on who it would help if

:38:22.:38:26.

this weather continues. If Rafa could get through the first week,

:38:27.:38:30.

who would it help the most? I think it would be Rafa more than any of

:38:31.:38:35.

the other players. We will see, a long way to go and this will be an

:38:36.:38:39.

interesting match. Congratulations, as we said at the top of the

:38:40.:38:44.

programme, 30 years since Pat Cash won Keir on Centre Court. Beating

:38:45.:38:52.

Ivan Lendl. Rate memories. -- great memories.

:38:53.:39:03.

It is a beautiful sunset in the making. Bernard Tomic, the Aussie. A

:39:04.:39:12.

lot of press about him saying he gets bored playing tennis these

:39:13.:39:17.

days. No one tires of watching this man plying his trade. Wonderful to

:39:18.:39:22.

see Nadal back at Wimbledon, they are pleased. Pretty much fully fit.

:39:23.:39:26.

Three-month break at the end of last year. Roger Federer's was six months

:39:27.:39:34.

and it has rejuvenated the careers. A wonderful final they played in

:39:35.:39:38.

Melbourne. Looking forward to seeing that again. For the first time since

:39:39.:39:44.

Wimbledon in 2013, Nadal has chosen not to play a warm up tournament.

:39:45.:39:52.

His body was tired and he wanted to completely re-coop. The way he

:39:53.:39:56.

started in the first round against Millman, he is sharp and keen and

:39:57.:40:01.

looking for his first round since he was runner-up in 2011. For Donald

:40:02.:40:08.

Young, when he walked out on the court, he didn't look anywhere other

:40:09.:40:14.

than in the stands, at the top. Everywhere, to try to soak up his

:40:15.:40:18.

first time on this amazing court. Boris Becker said Wimbledon changed

:40:19.:40:19.

his life so much, he calls it home. Donald Young takes on the great

:40:20.:40:32.

champion, two times Wimbledon champion, Rafael Nadal.

:40:33.:40:38.

That is not the start you want. Do you remember your first match on

:40:39.:41:02.

this court? The sun is really low. Difficult to

:41:03.:41:18.

pick up. Difficult to serve. See how Rafa handles it. He doesn't.

:41:19.:41:28.

Five aces for Young in his opener. The first couple of games, always

:41:29.:43:04.

nerve-racking. A very special court. He would dearly love to hold this

:43:05.:43:49.

opening service game, it almost goes without saying. Break point.

:43:50.:44:16.

The perfect start for Nadal. Yes, he is a practice phenomenon. I know

:44:17.:44:25.

from the other Grand Slams he lost, he would go to Centre Court and

:44:26.:44:31.

practice day after day. It is not possible here so also unknown

:44:32.:44:34.

territory for him. He didn't play last year. Has not been successful

:44:35.:44:40.

at Wimbledon for a number of years. I'm sure he feels a little edgy as

:44:41.:44:46.

well. But making your position clear right away eases the feeling.

:44:47.:44:54.

A towel either side to take less time. There has been a focus at the

:44:55.:45:05.

French Open, they gave him a warning a couple of times. He has to focus

:45:06.:45:08.

on his seconds between opponents. A lot of people ask me, why is Nadal

:45:09.:45:35.

coming back? Of course he is healthy. You watch his serve today,

:45:36.:45:38.

the speed and accuracy. He has improved a lot. His overall

:45:39.:45:52.

game is a lot more proactive and aggressive. The forehand has a

:45:53.:46:00.

better follow-through. He has got a handy forehand himself, Young.

:46:01.:46:11.

Not quite as good as that one, though.

:46:12.:46:21.

You can see that when a way he hits it and it follows through forward to

:46:22.:46:26.

the net and that is something we haven't seen at all from Rafa.

:46:27.:46:34.

Hitting the ball on the line, still a few feet behind the baseline.

:46:35.:46:52.

A natural right-hander, Nadal. Donald Young writes right-handed.

:46:53.:47:00.

Both lefties, obviously! I saw Rafa Nadal in Majorca for the first time

:47:01.:47:06.

and he played with both hands. He looks, like his outfit, he just

:47:07.:47:29.

looks so fresh. He has had an incredible comeback as well.

:47:30.:47:34.

Everyone talks about Roger Federer rightly so but he is right behind.

:47:35.:47:52.

Enough to win at the French Open and in Majorca.

:47:53.:47:59.

There were pictures of him on a boat navigating the island. Anyone would

:48:00.:48:04.

be fresh coming back from that! He said it is a pretty quick boat as

:48:05.:48:15.

well. Another shot that he has fastly

:48:16.:48:40.

improved. Accelerating power. Look at that, he

:48:41.:48:50.

steps forward and bang. Who would have thought we would see

:48:51.:49:28.

Nadal slicing an approach. Both got the natural leftie

:49:29.:49:52.

outswinger. Nadal has had to work hard on it over the years.

:49:53.:50:10.

Quite amazing to think that Nadal, the first time he made the final

:50:11.:50:17.

here, at Wimbledon, as a pro, he played unless band ten matches on

:50:18.:50:23.

the surface. Can you imagine anyone doing that on the clay? He is such a

:50:24.:50:27.

quick learner and he is always looking to improve. He goes on the

:50:28.:50:32.

practice court every single day for the trout or five hours. Doesn't get

:50:33.:50:36.

tired, just wants to get better and better.

:50:37.:50:45.

It is a prime example, for some of the younger guys who wanted to be as

:50:46.:50:52.

good as Rafa Nadal, there are no short cuts. It is called work,

:50:53.:50:56.

discipline, repetition, that is your way to the top. Just listen to the

:50:57.:51:07.

buzz around Centre Court, people pleased he is getting back to his

:51:08.:51:09.

best. He is such an ambassador. On and off

:51:10.:51:15.

the court. The whole family love the sport. His

:51:16.:51:33.

uncle from Barcelona. Rafa Nadal is a Real Madrid fan.

:51:34.:51:51.

He is one of the best volley players on tour.

:51:52.:52:05.

He has a good feel and he likes a drop shot.

:52:06.:52:41.

Good point by Young. Taking the initiative away from Nadal.

:52:42.:53:11.

Shadows nearly all the way across the court. Tough for a lot of fans

:53:12.:53:24.

in that corner. A lot of people complaining about

:53:25.:53:38.

the sun. A beautiful, hot day, the forecast is pretty good.

:53:39.:53:49.

Since they built the roof, the weather seems to have got better! A

:53:50.:53:55.

100 million bill. A solid hold. Just plays a bit

:53:56.:54:26.

easier when you break up. When he made his debut, Donald

:54:27.:55:59.

Young, in 2008, he was 18 and in the top 100. All that was talked about

:56:00.:56:04.

him as a young junior champion here, the next big thing perhaps, it was

:56:05.:56:09.

all going so well. It is tough pressure, he has had a seesaw time

:56:10.:56:13.

pretty much ever since. It is difficult when you are a teenager

:56:14.:56:17.

and the situation is put upon you. Not everyone can handle that. Big

:56:18.:56:25.

contracts, the great American hope, rightly so. He was the best junior.

:56:26.:56:31.

Then to come into the men's, it is a different game. It won't be easy.

:56:32.:56:35.

Donald Young thought it would be like everyone does. Then you have a

:56:36.:56:39.

loss of confidence. People start doubting him. As a young man, it is

:56:40.:56:45.

difficult to cope with all of that. But you are stuck with it. He has a

:56:46.:56:57.

tight-knit family. He is not a top ten player but that doesn't mean he

:56:58.:57:02.

is a bad player. He got back into the top 50s, only five spots of his

:57:03.:57:06.

career high. That was five years ago. He comes back every year. And

:57:07.:57:15.

you get better. It is not easy. New generations are coming knocking at

:57:16.:57:17.

the door and you have keep improving. A lot of talent comes and

:57:18.:57:21.

goes but he has stuck at it. Reach the final of the French Open

:57:22.:57:31.

doubles. Big stage at the end of the

:57:32.:57:42.

fortnight. The locker room is empty. Must feel weird.

:57:43.:58:11.

Second set, second service was up 108 miles an hour. Didn't serve one

:58:12.:58:17.

double fault in his first round. Another area he improved, that

:58:18.:58:36.

second serve. Playing with a bit more speed and accuracy. The top

:58:37.:58:40.

guys otherwise take advantage. There was always a weakness in his second

:58:41.:58:42.

serve on grass. Donald Young struggling with his

:58:43.:59:18.

son. -- Donald Young struggling with the sun.

:59:19.:59:34.

He must have loved starting this year out of pain. First time. In a

:59:35.:59:57.

while. He had to take last summer off.

:59:58.:00:03.

He took the whole autumn off, to get healthy.

:00:04.:00:10.

Started the year in Abu Dhabi. He won the tournament there.

:00:11.:00:25.

He had Federer break up in fifth set. It was one of the best moments

:00:26.:00:40.

in Roger Federer's career, he said, recovering from that.

:00:41.:00:53.

He is never afraid to express himself, Donald Young. At Eastbourne

:00:54.:01:46.

and Queen's when it was not going right he would scream at his mother,

:01:47.:01:51.

cheer for me Laudrup or leave. She cheered ex-Commissioner Mark Poor

:01:52.:02:03.

mother. Here she is. -- cheer for me louder.

:02:04.:02:12.

A tough service game but he comes through it.

:02:13.:02:56.

Look at the flight of that. He stays three or four feet behind that. I

:02:57.:03:12.

heard that it will be Tony's last year on the tour. I hope he changes

:03:13.:03:15.

his mind because this man needs him. Smiles all round. The speed is

:03:16.:03:39.

there. He looks rejuvenated. It looks like he has been left in the

:03:40.:03:43.

box too long and he has been let out! That is nice. They are both

:03:44.:03:51.

looking to get up to the net when they can. And of course the grass is

:03:52.:03:59.

maybe a bit slower, but it is still a grass court and it is difficult to

:04:00.:04:03.

move from side to side and the way to win a point is often to get up to

:04:04.:04:17.

the net. His serve has got an amazing sound on it, a crack. Not

:04:18.:04:23.

the tallest of men, but a great technique.

:04:24.:05:10.

It is always the relentless power of Rafael Nadal that gets you in the

:05:11.:05:19.

end. He He has settled well after that

:05:20.:05:42.

opening game, Donald Young. Just the one break. A good tennis match now.

:05:43.:05:44.

Good points. You do serve there at your peril,

:05:45.:06:00.

don't you? It is a good mixture of direction

:06:01.:06:25.

and spin. That is his favourite corner on the deuce side. He has had

:06:26.:06:32.

a couple of aces already. A bit of self coaching there.

:06:33.:06:59.

Telling him it should have been a forehand. Good camera work.

:07:00.:07:24.

That was a surprising miss. I am watching Rafa. This is great, ma'am,

:07:25.:07:36.

thanks! Well done, Donald Young. Enjoying

:07:37.:08:08.

that seat right now. He was a bit nervous when he first sat on it.

:08:09.:08:21.

Rafael Nadal takes his time. But whenever he has had a warning he has

:08:22.:08:27.

speeded up. It is very seldom in his career that he has had a second

:08:28.:08:30.

warning. It has not been followed through. Do you think it should have

:08:31.:08:35.

been for the sake of the opponent more? Give discretion two Rafael

:08:36.:08:47.

Nadal. I do not think he does it on purpose. It is his rhythm, it is how

:08:48.:08:52.

he feels comfortable. But he is pushing it sometimes. But he has

:08:53.:09:02.

been stuck in his routine for over 15 years and it is difficult to

:09:03.:09:06.

adapt to a faster movement. They are changing the rules to speed up the

:09:07.:09:15.

game, which I like. It is just his habit. In Madrid later this year

:09:16.:09:25.

they are using the clock. It will be an interesting experiment. New balls

:09:26.:09:32.

in play with the sole break achieved at the beginning of the match.

:09:33.:09:37.

Donald Young chose to serve. That wasn't the best of drop shots.

:09:38.:09:55.

A quick recovery at the net. Those are his habits, it is what he

:09:56.:10:51.

does. I like that. I am pretty sure some

:10:52.:11:47.

of the other favourites will take notice of Rafa at the net. They will

:11:48.:11:53.

not admit it, but they will all watch it.

:11:54.:12:01.

A change of racket for Nadal after serving with the new balls. Each to

:12:02.:12:27.

their own. Young is serving to stay in this opening set.

:12:28.:12:40.

Six feet tall. Who is this guy in the back? Another leftie. I have

:12:41.:13:44.

seen him somewhere. REFEREE: Mr Young is challenging the

:13:45.:14:01.

call on the service line. Mr Young has two challenges

:14:02.:14:25.

remaining. You might as well use them.

:14:26.:14:38.

14 points at the net. It feels like more than that. That is between

:14:39.:14:45.

them. Boris, when you used to sit down on

:14:46.:15:44.

this court and when you got up and you were either serving for a set or

:15:45.:15:49.

a Mac, what did you tell yourself? Play it point by point. Think about

:15:50.:15:55.

what was successful before. Why am I up a break? What is the service

:15:56.:16:01.

pattern that I use? What is my opponent's strong side with the

:16:02.:16:07.

return. Do not think it is a match of the score line, focus on every

:16:08.:16:12.

point. Does that become more difficult when you serve for the

:16:13.:16:15.

Wimbledon title? Against Kevin Curran? Very. You forget to breathe.

:16:16.:16:24.

You can't walk properly. But it is all in the eyes of the beholder. You

:16:25.:16:31.

have to keep repeating what you do and not get intimidated by the

:16:32.:16:40.

occasion. I do not think I have ever seen Nadal sit still at the change

:16:41.:16:55.

of ends. Always energetic. There is a real buzz around this court. He

:16:56.:17:02.

has not been to the third round here since he made the final six years

:17:03.:17:11.

ago. A few wins against him with injury last year. Nadal is serving

:17:12.:17:12.

for the opening set. And again. I am repeating myself. He

:17:13.:17:48.

is finding his luck at the net. Seven from nine now.

:17:49.:18:05.

I'm very confident hold. SUE BARKER: He takes the opening set 6-4. Let's

:18:06.:19:07.

show you what has been happening elsewhere. On number one Court,

:19:08.:19:15.

Venus Williams is involved in a real struggle with Wang Qiang from China.

:19:16.:19:27.

A big smile from Venus out on number one Court. It was a real battle, but

:19:28.:19:33.

she is still in the tournament and she will be back for round three. We

:19:34.:19:40.

are moving away from Centre Court. If you want to watch it, you can

:19:41.:19:46.

watch it on the red button. One of the big favourites for the title,

:19:47.:19:51.

Petra Kvitova, is in real trouble against Madison Bradl of the United

:19:52.:19:55.

States, a player who has beaten her twice out of three matches in the

:19:56.:20:01.

last couple of years. The American is 4-2 up in the final set. --

:20:02.:20:04.

Madison Brendel. It looks like her tank is just about

:20:05.:20:20.

empty now. She had to rivet second set to take it 6-1.

:20:21.:20:46.

There have been many mistakes from Petra Kvitova and it has not been

:20:47.:20:53.

easy asking. She has just asked for the trainer.

:20:54.:21:06.

Petra Kvitova wins the rally, but she does not like rallies like that.

:21:07.:21:23.

Madison Brengle does not bring strength to the court, she brings

:21:24.:21:24.

Gyle. A rare mistake from Brengle. She has

:21:25.:21:49.

been pretty secure right the way through.

:21:50.:22:09.

She measured that perfectly. You never know in this match. I saw her

:22:10.:22:17.

first-round match against Johanna Larsson and she was remarkable and

:22:18.:22:23.

she played very well. Here she has had one to refix set -- one great

:22:24.:22:28.

set. She has called for the trainer. If

:22:29.:22:59.

she can hold on here, maybe the trainer can do some magical things

:23:00.:23:01.

and she might survive. Petra Kvitova was one of the joint

:23:02.:23:46.

favourites for the tournament, but she has not played like that this

:23:47.:23:55.

afternoon. Madison Brengle had a win over Serena Williams at the start of

:23:56.:24:00.

the year. Petra Kvitova does not know when the attack is coming.

:24:01.:24:29.

She felt she had to finish the rally on that shot. One of the longest

:24:30.:24:46.

rallies. Ten shots. Her box is willing her forward.

:24:47.:25:22.

It is so key for her to hold here. Otherwise Brengle will feel she is

:25:23.:25:31.

very nearly home. One of the problems we says Ishii

:25:32.:26:07.

has not been able to grip the racket as well as she could even on Monday.

:26:08.:26:16.

There was so much damage to her hand, her nerves were hurt, every

:26:17.:26:19.

finger was in trouble really and gripping has been an issue.

:26:20.:26:52.

She set it up perfectly and normally she would bury that. She just cannot

:26:53.:27:03.

trust herself here. There is the surgeon who did the job on her hand.

:27:04.:27:07.

He was there on Centre Court on Monday. That is the man who told her

:27:08.:27:19.

it was 50-50 if she would ever return to the top level.

:27:20.:27:36.

No wonder she clenches her face. That rally summed up Madison Brengle

:27:37.:27:46.

here. Great scrapping. She is a game away from taking out the double

:27:47.:27:56.

champion. -- clenches her fist. Still, you would not totally rule

:27:57.:28:00.

Petra Kvitova added. Let's see what can be done here. It is her hand.

:28:01.:28:14.

Perhaps the most worrying thing of all, her hand is betraying her.

:28:15.:28:30.

There are also does seem to be another physical problem in that she

:28:31.:28:36.

is running out of energy. It is burning hot. All the emotional tally

:28:37.:28:43.

of the last two matches. Playing here at Wimbledon, her favourite

:28:44.:28:48.

tournament. They are taking her blood pressure as well because she

:28:49.:28:58.

is obviously not 100%. Worrying times. I think conditioning is an

:28:59.:29:03.

issue. I am not sure. We are trying to pick

:29:04.:29:22.

up what we can offer this. Sorry? Not really. It is my stomach that is

:29:23.:29:57.

the problem. Her stomach? This is tricky to pick up.

:29:58.:30:12.

Excuse the silence, but, like you, we're trying to pick something up.

:30:13.:30:43.

But it's obviously not just by hand, as we suspected, there is something

:30:44.:30:44.

else. -- not just the hand. She did turn it around so

:30:45.:31:01.

impressively in the second set. She was all over the place in the first

:31:02.:31:07.

set. 20 unforced errors. Was 1-0 down. Then the second set, then

:31:08.:31:11.

reeled off Mac six games in a row, at that point we thought things

:31:12.:31:15.

would get very tough for the American here, looking for her first

:31:16.:31:23.

win over at Wimbledon. But she has scrapped well. It is smart from

:31:24.:31:34.

Madison just to sit there. She is up now. She needs to start jogging up

:31:35.:31:39.

and down, doing some shadow swings, even hitting a couple of servers

:31:40.:31:43.

with some spare balls. A good idea from Madison. Not easy when you're

:31:44.:31:50.

serving to win a match, you're serving for the match on a big court

:31:51.:31:55.

against the two-time reigning champion, and you have to sit there.

:31:56.:32:00.

So, the doctor has left, the physio has loved, she's on her own now. I'm

:32:01.:32:06.

sure she wasn't feeling 100% -- the physio has left. This has to do with

:32:07.:32:11.

conditioning, she has played so few matches, to come in at this level is

:32:12.:32:20.

very hard. So, Brengle serving for the match. The double break cushion.

:32:21.:32:26.

At one stage she was broken for times in a row. Doing better now.

:32:27.:33:02.

This time, there's so many shots, particularly early on in the

:33:03.:33:09.

forehand, but then it got better. Now it's got worse.

:33:10.:33:16.

APPLAUSE I think this is just a mopping up

:33:17.:33:25.

process now. Sad to see. Three match points.

:33:26.:33:45.

Well, she's got to forget that. Very easy being wrong on the baseline,

:33:46.:33:53.

she was just too nervous to challenge it.

:33:54.:34:16.

APPLAUSE A fine win for Madison Brengle, one

:34:17.:34:27.

of the biggest in her career. A lot of extenuating circumstances, but

:34:28.:34:34.

the double champion is out here. And, for all the credit that she

:34:35.:34:39.

does deserve, Madison Brengle, it is a sad occasion for most of us. Let's

:34:40.:34:46.

hope that, to can come back stronger as the year progresses. -- that

:34:47.:34:50.

Petra Kvitova can come back stronger. She is through to the

:34:51.:34:54.

third round. She's a tricky customer. It was a clever match.

:34:55.:34:59.

I've seen her play many time, this is what you get from Brengle, she

:35:00.:35:03.

makes other players play badly, that her modus operandi, and she does it

:35:04.:35:10.

very well. It's a difficult task. And what's happened to Kvitova out

:35:11.:35:13.

here today is what has happened to many players on the tour, she has

:35:14.:35:20.

been Brengled, you have seen what that is in the first hour and 45

:35:21.:35:26.

minutes. The first hour promised much for Petra Kvitova, but in the

:35:27.:35:30.

end it is defeat in round number two. Madison Brengle goes through.

:35:31.:35:35.

STUDIO: Many people's favourite, including mine, going out. You felt

:35:36.:35:39.

after the second set you was going to seal victory. So sad to see her

:35:40.:35:43.

suffering so much. But she hasn't been doing a lot of training or

:35:44.:35:47.

playing a lot of matches, and it's a very warm day here today at

:35:48.:35:52.

Wimbledon. But credit to Brengle, she played a superb match and she is

:35:53.:36:01.

through. Petra Kvitova, the two-time champion, is out of Wimbledon. Just

:36:02.:36:04.

before we return to Centre Court, where going to tell you about a

:36:05.:36:06.

story, I'm sure you're going to read this in the headlines of the papers

:36:07.:36:09.

tomorrow. It involves a controversial match taking place out

:36:10.:36:12.

on court 16 involving Daniil Medvedev. He wanted to have the

:36:13.:36:15.

umpire changed because during the match he had a number of rules, and

:36:16.:36:20.

this was another one early in the fifth set. Let's listening. --

:36:21.:36:26.

listen in. I think you have something against me. You change his

:36:27.:36:32.

calls. Why? I want to change the referee. What do you mean? The break

:36:33.:36:46.

point, you just did it by yourself. Where the hell is the supervisor? He

:36:47.:36:53.

called for the supervisor. But the referee and the umpire was not

:36:54.:36:58.

changed. Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium went on to take the fifth set 6-3.

:36:59.:37:03.

Daniil Medvedev, who put out Stan Wawrinka in the first round, is out

:37:04.:37:08.

of the Championships but not out of the controversy. He did shake the

:37:09.:37:13.

umpire's hand. But just after that, as Bemelmans was celebrating, this

:37:14.:37:17.

is what he did. He got the wallet out and started throwing coins at

:37:18.:37:21.

the bottom of the umpire's chair as she got down from the chair. And

:37:22.:37:25.

this is what he had to say in the press conference after the match

:37:26.:37:31.

when asked about it. Well, this is what he said to the supervisor...

:37:32.:37:46.

That's what he said to the supervisor. And this is what he had

:37:47.:37:52.

to say to the press. In the heat of the moment I did a bad thing. And I

:37:53.:37:58.

apologise for this. And, yeah, I have nothing to say more. What's the

:37:59.:38:02.

significance of actually throwing recordings? What was it meant to

:38:03.:38:08.

mean? As I said, -- throwing the coins. It didn't mean anything. And

:38:09.:38:16.

I was just... I don't know why I did it. As I said, like, indeed of the

:38:17.:38:21.

moment I was frustrated to lose the match. Maybe there were some bad

:38:22.:38:26.

calls. It can happen in sport. And I was just disappointed. Did you mean

:38:27.:38:34.

that he was being biased? As I said, no, as I answered before, no, not at

:38:35.:38:39.

all. Will you apologise personally to her? If I see her. Apologising

:38:40.:38:46.

there, saying he will apologise to Marianne Alvarez, who was the

:38:47.:38:51.

umpire. No Hawk-Eye of course out on court 16, there are on the Big Show

:38:52.:38:58.

courts but not on the small courts. Somehow I don't think we have heard

:38:59.:39:02.

the end of that controversy -- there is war cry on the big courts. The

:39:03.:39:08.

number two seed Simona Halep is an number one court. Up against Beatriz

:39:09.:39:14.

Haddad Maia. He was a break down but now she is a break-up, serving for

:39:15.:39:18.

the first set. That is the feature match on the red button. Also on the

:39:19.:39:26.

BBC Sport website is Madison Keys, the American, up against Camila

:39:27.:39:29.

Giorgi of Italy, this will be an entertaining match. Everybody

:39:30.:39:34.

tipping Madison Keys to be a big star at Wimbledon, she has a big

:39:35.:39:38.

game to win on grass but she is 5-3 down. You can follow that one on the

:39:39.:39:42.

red button and on the BBC Sport website. But we are heading back to

:39:43.:39:47.

Centre Court, once again, to see Rafael Nadal, who is a break of

:39:48.:39:51.

serve up in the second set against Donald Young. Let's rejoin our

:39:52.:39:55.

commentators Boris Becker and Chris Bradley.

:39:56.:40:26.

Boris Becker mac wrote give it time, Young is on the backhand side. He

:40:27.:40:35.

uses the point, almost. These tough players, they have a

:40:36.:41:25.

couple of people in their team, they have a head coach, but everybody's

:41:26.:41:26.

important. CHRIS BRADNAM: Fourth round here is

:41:27.:42:31.

best, Moya. BORIS BECKER: Great point, whipping it crosscourt,

:42:32.:42:32.

another break point. Nadal might have missed that

:42:33.:42:56.

returned because of what Donald Young expletive! I would have missed

:42:57.:43:00.

it to! There goes the backhand again,

:43:01.:43:30.

getting a bit too flat. That's going to be the one weakness he has to

:43:31.:43:36.

work the most. The rest of his game looks good, looks solid, sometimes

:43:37.:43:42.

even dangerous. But the backhand is questionable.

:43:43.:44:11.

Nadal's average backhand, top-spin speed, is considerably quicker than

:44:12.:44:23.

normal junk's -- van Donald Young's there's a a lot of chattering going

:44:24.:44:27.

on in the box at the moment. It's a big point.

:44:28.:44:47.

Very offensive return by Nadal, wow, that one. He is up a set and a

:44:48.:45:01.

break, the right play, you know, you want to practice the late exchanges

:45:02.:45:02.

of the tournament. Or tell you what, I've never seen

:45:03.:45:32.

him like this in grass, offensive, coming forward. He's 14 from 17.

:45:33.:45:35.

Terrific. Battling hard here. It's just the one break in each set

:45:36.:45:45.

right at the start. Boris, if we talk motivation or

:45:46.:46:42.

ambition for a second, since making the final six years ago, losing to

:46:43.:46:48.

Novak, he lost the second round the following year on this court under

:46:49.:46:52.

the roof for the fifth and final set. Steve Darcis on Court Number

:46:53.:46:59.

One, first round, the -- huge shock. Dustin Brown a couple of years ago

:47:00.:47:02.

before missing last year with a wrist injury. Does that may debate

:47:03.:47:07.

him? Because of that record he really wants to put things right? At

:47:08.:47:12.

first it might scare him, because the track record isn't good at all.

:47:13.:47:17.

But he's a competitor. He is challenged by that. He has a

:47:18.:47:24.

relatively poor record, therefore, it is done his homework, I'm sure

:47:25.:47:28.

he's talked with Tony and Francis go about, what went wrong? What do I

:47:29.:47:34.

have to do to get better? This seems to be the answer, play more

:47:35.:47:37.

aggressive, take more chances, come to the net. And it's working

:47:38.:47:44.

beautifully. We've seen the extraordinary flying ants around

:47:45.:47:48.

Wimbledon today. At times, Henman Hill, whatever you want to call it,

:47:49.:47:54.

has resembled a human nest. Some have flown. Still plenty there,

:47:55.:47:58.

watching this great player ply his trade. It is actually one of the

:47:59.:48:04.

very good spots, my friend and my wife, you know, she actually prefers

:48:05.:48:08.

Henman Hill sometimes because she can have the Pimms in her hand and

:48:09.:48:13.

enjoy it any more relaxed environment. It is a popular spot.

:48:14.:48:34.

APPLAUSE Interesting, on the clay and I'll

:48:35.:48:42.

hit the ball had much higher over the net to get the bounce. -- Nadal

:48:43.:48:48.

hits the ball. Here he goes over very tightly, celebrating speed

:48:49.:48:51.

through that. Totally different style.

:48:52.:49:17.

The man who really goes for the line with the forehand. It's

:49:18.:49:51.

intimidating. UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:49:52.:50:22.

There are Times on Nadal's forehand, the ball is almost wobbling, it is

:50:23.:50:27.

like a fish in water as it moves down the line. It creates so much

:50:28.:50:33.

top-spin. With a little more lid on his racket, and little heavier, he

:50:34.:50:37.

gets more speed out of it. It's very difficult to control. New balls.

:50:38.:50:42.

Young serving to stay in set number two.

:50:43.:50:47.

Oh, if that had hit Donald Young on the full, Nadal would have won the

:50:48.:50:55.

point. One of those idiosyncratic rules in tennis.

:50:56.:51:05.

It's a brutal return, when he chose sparingly to serve and volley.

:51:06.:51:22.

Donald Young is serving onto the body. It is a serve not used often

:51:23.:51:28.

enough. Especially on grass. The smiles have gone. I've seen

:51:29.:51:50.

happier faces. After one hour and 11 minutes, his

:51:51.:52:37.

first match on Court Number One, he was fourth on Court One on Monday,

:52:38.:52:42.

one hour and 46 minutes. Boris, getting through the earlier rounds

:52:43.:52:46.

in Grand Slams as easily as possible is still very important. That's key

:52:47.:52:51.

if you want to have a chance to win the Championship, you have to spend

:52:52.:52:54.

as little energy and time in the earlier rounds, especially in the

:52:55.:52:58.

first week, as you are intent on the draw with your form. There are

:52:59.:53:02.

unlikely that you go all the way, to spend all of your energy in the

:53:03.:53:06.

first week entry. So I think the top guys know that, the favourites know

:53:07.:53:11.

that. They try to play very efficient, of cause. They're looking

:53:12.:53:16.

to find their form. Once they find their form, they feel good about it.

:53:17.:53:21.

You see Andy Murray forming the back performing excellent against Dustin

:53:22.:53:26.

Brown. The top guys gearing up a notch. Just looking to get through

:53:27.:53:33.

as easy as possible. You got a lot of courts in what you call your

:53:34.:53:37.

home, haven't you? I don't know which one to pick sometimes! I think

:53:38.:53:42.

you like the big one, don't you? I agree.

:53:43.:53:55.

A couple more towels requested for Nadal. Really did save time, so he

:53:56.:54:06.

doesn't have to go in the corner. They can bring the towels for him.

:54:07.:54:23.

He'd be good at any sport, wouldn't he, no Bell? I know he's good at

:54:24.:54:31.

football. I think he plays. -- Nadal. And golf, he plays golf. The

:54:32.:54:39.

island where he lives in Majorca, there are beautiful golf courses.

:54:40.:54:40.

You can catch him there often. Oh, he stopped straightaway, so he

:54:41.:54:56.

was committed to the challenge, really, Young. The ball is called

:54:57.:55:01.

in. He doesn't look to convince, though. -- doesn't look too

:55:02.:55:06.

convinced. UMPIRE: Mr Young has one challenge

:55:07.:55:17.

remaining. The young man approved of this one.

:55:18.:55:42.

He wouldn't?! -- who will wouldn't. He keeps his authority on the

:55:43.:56:47.

server. Two set points. -- on the serve.

:56:48.:57:05.

Young comes up with some exceptional points at times. Just doesn't have

:57:06.:57:21.

the consistency. APPLAUSE

:57:22.:58:02.

Well, he gambled that in one. Like the goalkeeper choosing the right

:58:03.:58:03.

corner. APPLAUSE

:58:04.:59:44.

Serve and volley on by a point down. No, it's not Roger Federer, it's

:59:45.:59:46.

Rafael Nadal. He's got a split on his finger, I

:59:47.:59:57.

think. That's why he wears all this tape on the ends of his fingers. He

:59:58.:00:02.

just wants the call but into the trainer, I think, for a repair.

:00:03.:00:14.

He is three from three on the serve and folly. But on break point? --

:00:15.:00:23.

serve and volley. Not by knowledge. Rave lady. -- Not

:00:24.:01:10.

by much. Brave lady. Coming from two sets down to win.

:01:11.:01:20.

STUDIO: Rafa in charge and no doubt looking for the trainer. You want

:01:21.:01:24.

some tape for those sore fingers. I'm sure we will have a little delay

:01:25.:01:30.

here and centre. We will be back. What a wonderful day it has been

:01:31.:01:35.

here at Wimbledon. Let's find out what will feature on our Highland

:01:36.:01:38.

show. Sunshine and tennis, what better way

:01:39.:01:43.

to spend the day. We'll be bringing you the best of the action from

:01:44.:01:48.

those matches. We will see Joanna Konta, Andy Murray against Dustin

:01:49.:01:51.

Brown, we will also see Rafa Nadal, and we'll show you how Heather

:01:52.:01:55.

Watson got on. We will also have quote of the day and shot of the

:01:56.:02:04.

day. Join us on BBC Two. STUDIO: There's plenty of tennis

:02:05.:02:08.

continuing around the grounds. In the ladies' championship out on

:02:09.:02:13.

Court Number One, Simona Halep was in trouble in the opening set. She

:02:14.:02:20.

was a break down but has taken the first set 7-5. A real battle there

:02:21.:02:24.

for the French Open runner-up. That matches on the red button. Over on

:02:25.:02:39.

Court number three, well, the 17th seed being coached by Lindsay

:02:40.:02:43.

Davenport. A big forehand, but she is trailing a set and a break to be

:02:44.:02:50.

-- to the very talented Camila Giorgi. Out on court 12 is the

:02:51.:02:58.

French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko. The match she played

:02:59.:03:04.

against Simona Halep was incredible. Uninhibited tennis. She is out on

:03:05.:03:11.

Court number 12 and in real trouble against Abanda of Canada. She's

:03:12.:03:16.

dropped the first set but has taken the second. She is struggling in her

:03:17.:03:20.

opening. Here she is with a point to go 3-1 up in the second. But a huge

:03:21.:03:26.

future for this 20-year-old. That matches on the red button and the

:03:27.:03:33.

BBC Sport website, if you want to see Jelena. The order of play for

:03:34.:03:39.

tomorrow, first on Centre Court is Britain's Kyle Edmund who is taking

:03:40.:03:44.

on Gael Monfils, always described as the great showman. Never really a

:03:45.:03:49.

contender for the title, but he is ranked 14th. Then it is Karolina

:03:50.:03:53.

Pliskova and Roger Federer, the Centre Court line-up tomorrow. But

:03:54.:03:58.

what's coming up tomorrow, but back we go. I think Rafa has had some

:03:59.:04:08.

tape and is ready to go. COMMENTATOR: Repairs for Nadal Colly

:04:09.:04:14.

down. -- repairs for Nadal carried out. A long way back from here. Two

:04:15.:04:20.

steps down. He's lost his own service game of each of the two

:04:21.:04:23.

preceding sets. He's got to stop this one well. -- start this one

:04:24.:04:29.

well. They've even got a sponsor for the

:04:30.:04:50.

tape Ewers on his fingers, Nadal. -- he wears on his fingers. He's got

:04:51.:05:09.

ten fingers. Another good exciting rally by Young. A good shot maker.

:05:10.:05:44.

Many have tried and failed to trade forehands with Nadal.

:05:45.:05:57.

There are many cheering for Donald Young now. I think many would like

:05:58.:06:03.

to see Nadal win, but they just want to see more of him. They wouldn't

:06:04.:06:05.

mind another set after this. Looking for the break straightaway,

:06:06.:06:23.

again, Nadal. Nearly six minutes past eight. We have seen a lot more

:06:24.:06:30.

tennis in his three matches than yesterday. Thankfully, they put

:06:31.:06:33.

another ladies' match Ryan last night. -- match on last night. To

:06:34.:06:42.

get some value for the ticket! Today, it's not necessary. Unlucky.

:06:43.:07:13.

Good by the American. The first time he's helped the opening service game

:07:14.:07:27.

of a set. -- he's held. Would you add anything else for Donald Young?

:07:28.:07:31.

Holding serve, get the scoreboard ticking. But anything else? He's got

:07:32.:07:37.

to increase intensity. He has flashes of brilliance, but he's

:07:38.:07:41.

really got to put it on the line. Nothing to lose now. Two sets to

:07:42.:07:51.

love down. He has incredible ability at times. But lacking consistency.

:07:52.:08:29.

That's what I'm talking about. Just let it all out. It's too late. The

:08:30.:08:51.

-- it's too late for strategy. Or no comfort break, I think.

:08:52.:09:08.

Unless she decided to leave. Hope not, her son's playing.

:09:09.:09:34.

Good again, if taken the ball early. Just try something different. I like

:09:35.:09:54.

his attitude. Only offered the one break point so far, Nadal.

:09:55.:10:20.

It's must be the third time he's had Nadal at 30-30. Hmm, you could stay

:10:21.:11:10.

up, son. Could. Strong clear by Nadal. Beautiful

:11:11.:11:46.

through that volley. Not stopping in no man's land. Some players do that.

:11:47.:12:14.

Well, he had a chance flag, Young. He pushed Nadal. One game isn't good

:12:15.:12:30.

enough, you have two build momentum. You have to create your own chances.

:12:31.:12:44.

Interesting enough is Nadal would feel that. He feels that Dion is not

:12:45.:12:52.

giving up, but he's got into fifth or sixth gear now. -- he feels that

:12:53.:13:00.

Young is not giving up. Body serve again. She serves really well,

:13:01.:13:13.

doesn't it, Young? Really good. -- He serves.

:13:14.:13:20.

Which national team is that, jersey-wise? Spain? The scoreboard

:13:21.:14:05.

is ticking for Donald Young. Up, instead of down. How good do you

:14:06.:14:19.

think Donald Young could be? He's been as high as 38th in the world,

:14:20.:14:24.

Donald Young. I think he could be a consistent top 30 player. But,

:14:25.:14:30.

obviously, he's got to improve his back and a little bit. He's not the

:14:31.:14:37.

strongest players physically. Very quick. Sometimes a little bit of

:14:38.:14:47.

firepower is lacking. He's good in doubles now. He's played a lot more

:14:48.:14:53.

done. -- played a lot more double. It's good to see that, isn't it?

:14:54.:14:55.

Just adding to the scores. The way Donald Young has stopped

:14:56.:15:18.

looking up and around, he's just totally focused on the court, the

:15:19.:15:22.

playing surface, the job around. It was wonderful to see behind the back

:15:23.:15:26.

netting before coming out onto the court. His hat with a bit off, he

:15:27.:15:31.

often wears it to be fired. Just like letting the side. Just like

:15:32.:15:34.

letting beast e-mail - he was looking up and around, taking in

:15:35.:15:41.

this historic court. -- just like letting the steam out. It's been a

:15:42.:15:47.

bit too much for some. Come on, it's not that boring! May be heeded

:15:48.:15:52.

another marathon before he sat down. -- may be heeded another marathon.

:15:53.:16:03.

Young is strong faced at the moment. Nadal has to be careful.

:16:04.:16:16.

The thing about tennis, there are so many momentum changes, back and

:16:17.:16:20.

forth. There's always a chance. Serve onto the body. Got away too

:16:21.:16:41.

late. In his own little zone now. It's

:16:42.:17:47.

good to see that fighting spirit. He went doubled the amount. You could

:17:48.:17:49.

hear how hard he was trying, too. It's still very warm. The hottest

:17:50.:18:01.

day of the tournament so far. After that shot, looking to come in.

:18:02.:18:44.

It's beautiful to see. Well, it hit a line, but is it long?

:18:45.:19:04.

No challenge. Oh! That's what you call taking on a

:19:05.:19:24.

return. The best part of the match so far. Real competitive. And with

:19:25.:19:34.

another blistering return. Couldn't take it much earlier than that.

:19:35.:19:45.

Checking his watch, what time of the day it is.

:19:46.:21:00.

Showtime! Look at this. Half-volley drop shot.

:21:01.:21:30.

Is it just me, or is that the point? They agree with you.

:21:31.:21:47.

As we understand that, Boris, should this match go beyond the point where

:21:48.:22:46.

it's light enough, they will close the roof to complete this evening.

:22:47.:22:51.

So we are just hanging in here with Donald Young, he's doing really

:22:52.:22:55.

well, notching the scoreboard. You never know, it's going to be the

:22:56.:23:01.

most magnificent sunsets. It's important information because

:23:02.:23:03.

everybody's worrying what they're going to do in 20, 25 minutes. It's

:23:04.:23:09.

one of the reasons they built the roof, to finish under all

:23:10.:23:13.

circumstances, all matches, on Centre Court. Bob Willis has bowled

:23:14.:23:26.

a few over in his time. Of course, when the roof closes, don't remind

:23:27.:23:36.

Nadal about 2012. What a set of tennis that was from the Czech. He

:23:37.:23:45.

became unplayable, it was extraordinary. As Kyrgios was fourth

:23:46.:23:54.

round a couple of years later. Dustin Brown, the year after that.

:23:55.:23:55.

In the second round. He's totally absorbed now, isn't it?

:23:56.:24:39.

What a forehand from Nadal. Close. He's challenging. I think the

:24:40.:25:18.

ball's borne out. It may be a little late for my taste. And it was out.

:25:19.:25:31.

Sometimes players check with their box whether to challenge or not.

:25:32.:25:44.

Immediate overruled. No complaints, no challenge from Donald Young.

:25:45.:25:57.

Good job, Mr umpire. We often criticise them. Today he's doing a

:25:58.:26:16.

good job. This is definitely the Spanish national team of football

:26:17.:26:20.

for the ladies. They'll have a mixed teams soon.

:26:21.:26:37.

They should be proud of their man. Ten French Opens. It's difficult to

:26:38.:26:47.

comprehend, isn't it? Look at the faces of the people

:26:48.:27:03.

behind. You can see what all the hype was

:27:04.:27:45.

about. A good tennis match now. Mama should be proud.

:27:46.:28:17.

This is a real punching contest now. It's one of the other. Nobody's

:28:18.:28:21.

holding back. Oh, far! Told "far enough", son.

:28:22.:29:01.

That was just over trying. Nothing wrong with over trying. Or

:29:02.:29:10.

overheating. -- overhitting. Two more break points.

:29:11.:29:23.

Nadal breaks. UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:29:24.:29:40.

It's quiet in the crowd. Obviously what was achieved at the start of

:29:41.:29:44.

the year for Nadal and Mr Federer, and since, a real contender, Nadal?

:29:45.:29:52.

We all wanted to see how he's playing on grass. He hasn't shown up

:29:53.:29:58.

in a while. Obviously he hasn't played in a grass court tournaments

:29:59.:30:02.

before, so we couldn't really tell. But what I've seen so far, he looks

:30:03.:30:08.

strong. He looks confident, he looks healthy, he looks hungry. And if he

:30:09.:30:13.

gets another two or three matches like this, nobody wants to play this

:30:14.:30:20.

guy, I'm telling you. The ultimate competitor, and he's going to give

:30:21.:30:27.

it all he's got. Of course everybody's favourite is Roger

:30:28.:30:33.

Federer. But then you have Andy Murray. You have Novak Djokovic. I

:30:34.:30:42.

think the big four back. I think all of them have a very, very realistic

:30:43.:30:47.

chance. It depends how they get through the first week, then the

:30:48.:30:53.

round of 16, then the quarterfinal. But the biggest question I had a

:30:54.:30:57.

Nadal, because we haven't seen him. I think he's answering all the

:30:58.:30:58.

questions. New balls in play. 4-3, Nadal, with

:30:59.:31:04.

the break. So good to see that Nadal is under

:31:05.:31:17.

pressure and fight another day. LAUGHTER

:31:18.:31:54.

Same woman! Not blinking. He beat John Millman 6-1, 6-2, 6-3,

:31:55.:32:24.

first round, Nadal. He has got a competitive set here.

:32:25.:32:39.

UMPIRE: Game, the Dalston the other 64% of first serves -- game, Nadal.

:32:40.:33:01.

Strong performance. There's a lot of contentment in the

:33:02.:33:12.

box for the bowl right now. Look at that score, you can understand why.

:33:13.:33:19.

-- for Nadal. He has brought back some better memories. He must feel

:33:20.:33:29.

like he's in a time machine, no bowl last year, two years ago, he thought

:33:30.:33:34.

that was maybe it -- that last year. But here we are, a brand-new version

:33:35.:33:39.

of him coming back. What a rest will be for you. There's a lesson to be

:33:40.:33:40.

learned therefore quite a few. Spectacular forehand at times. Runs

:33:41.:33:46.

around it, and bang in the corner. Has there ever been a better

:33:47.:35:18.

forehand down the line? There are some good ones over the years. Ivan

:35:19.:35:24.

Ramis wasn't bad. Pete Sampras wasn't bad. There's a guy in Sweden

:35:25.:35:32.

called Bjorn Borg, he wasn't bad either.

:35:33.:36:02.

This is one of the toughest things to do in tennis, even though the

:36:03.:36:21.

grass court season is longer. Really nice companies are. Three of the

:36:22.:36:27.

all-time greatest -- nice company there.

:36:28.:36:32.

I really like his attitude today. Around the court, still trying to

:36:33.:36:41.

ask Nadal the ultimate question of serving for the match.

:36:42.:36:59.

A lot of football fans here tonight! It's an Argentinian shirt.

:37:00.:37:26.

There will be a lot of aching faces this evening. Dustin Brown's shots,

:37:27.:37:47.

what we've seen here, they've been smiling for hours, the crowd.

:37:48.:37:53.

And there's another one! Donald Young does get to ask the question

:37:54.:38:01.

of Rafael Nadal. Well done! This half-volley down the line. Does

:38:02.:38:27.

it break your heart a little, how little serve and fully in play like

:38:28.:38:33.

this is shown on the grass now? Well, it's unfortunate, because it's

:38:34.:38:36.

an important part of the game. You can see the greats, they all adapt

:38:37.:38:39.

their game a little bit, and it's just not enough. From the baseline,

:38:40.:38:48.

everybody does that now. You served by playing a bit more aggressive,

:38:49.:38:51.

you don't have to serve and volley every time. But it's just what we

:38:52.:38:57.

see tonight from Nadal, just adding a new element to his game, therefore

:38:58.:39:01.

he's playing better now than he played years ago. The same thing

:39:02.:39:06.

with Federer. And the way Donald Young was looking ahead than, this

:39:07.:39:14.

match against Nadal on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, will he train

:39:15.:39:18.

his mind to even greater heights? I hope so. I thought about that

:39:19.:39:21.

before. If that's the way he wants to play, that the intensity, he has

:39:22.:39:31.

the quality, but can he do it at court number 17 against nobody?

:39:32.:39:35.

That's always the question. It's easy to play your best on Centre

:39:36.:39:38.

Court against that. Can he do it next week? Two minutes shy of two

:39:39.:39:47.

hours, Nadal serving. For a place in round three.

:39:48.:40:03.

He wants more. So did they. It's time to stand up! What a lightning

:40:04.:40:20.

forehand, perfect shot down the line. Beauty.

:40:21.:40:36.

UMPIRE: Mr Nadal is challenging the call on the far side line. The ball

:40:37.:40:40.

is called out. Of the Tiger. -- are of the Tiger.

:40:41.:41:01.

Different, first and second serve, 0-15, is huge.

:41:02.:41:39.

If Nadal was a sponge, you'd buy one.

:41:40.:41:53.

CHEERING One of the few unforced errors by

:41:54.:42:26.

Nadal, and it's always the same when you serve for the match. It's a

:42:27.:42:31.

different type of pressure. It doesn't matter who you are.

:42:32.:42:54.

Donald Young cannot try any harder! He was out of the picture, I didn't

:42:55.:42:59.

see him any more. Wow! That if a monster! People are

:43:00.:43:49.

standing. So, it it's Donald Young, he is still standing. He's got a

:43:50.:43:52.

lifeline. How can you cope with the pressure?

:43:53.:44:44.

That's the difference. The one big chance he had, the second serve.

:44:45.:45:23.

Just his second double. Of the tournament.

:45:24.:45:48.

UMPIRE: Game, Donald Young. Many more standing now!

:45:49.:46:00.

And well-deserved. The right intensity, good chances.

:46:01.:46:45.

Now you've got to cool down again. The concentration. Can he manage the

:46:46.:46:55.

emotion? UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, as a

:46:56.:48:06.

courtesy to both players, please, no calling out during the rally. Thank

:48:07.:48:10.

you very much. It's tough when you're so excited and you're playing

:48:11.:48:11.

every shot with them. It almost seems that Donald Young is

:48:12.:48:43.

surprised he's still in the match. He almost seems overwhelmed by

:48:44.:48:48.

breaking Nadal. Because he's lost his intensity.

:48:49.:48:57.

APPLAUSE And he's got a break again. To stay

:48:58.:49:10.

in the match began. That asks if he's OK after the slip. -- Nadal

:49:11.:49:17.

asks. It says everything you need to know about Nadal. The light is

:49:18.:49:22.

fading. But we know that Nadal on this court can play until it is

:49:23.:49:27.

virtually pitched up. Extraordinary final against Federer -- virtually

:49:28.:49:32.

pitched dark. Thought about going in but then he thought better of it,

:49:33.:49:36.

young, but he got stuck in the no man's land. You change your mind.

:49:37.:49:48.

Tony and Francisco, that's another reason why, you know, the top guys,

:49:49.:49:53.

Nadal and some of the others we mentioned, just rise above, because

:49:54.:49:59.

they can take a punch or two. There are strong characters, strong

:50:00.:50:04.

personalities. They don't wilt under a storm. And that looks, with the

:50:05.:50:13.

fading light, if the roof did have to be closed, they would have to

:50:14.:50:16.

take the players of court, get that done, bring them back. For Nadal, it

:50:17.:50:20.

lets do this now. For the second time, Nadal serving

:50:21.:50:28.

for the match. Let's see if Younge can rise to the

:50:29.:50:40.

occasion again. -- if Young. APPLAUSE

:50:41.:50:57.

He cut it fine. It skimmed the net. Nadal is solid now. He's been warned

:50:58.:51:35.

before. That'll do it! Two matches, six

:51:36.:52:23.

sets, round three for Afri on adult. -- for Rafael Navarro.

:52:24.:52:30.

STUDIO: Great stuff from Rafa Nadal, and of course from Donald Young.

:52:31.:52:36.

Rafa going to keep the lighting that crowd and is under God. What a day

:52:37.:52:39.

they've had. We will be reflecting on some of the early action --

:52:40.:52:44.

delighting that crowd on Centre Court. We will be hearing from Raqqa

:52:45.:52:51.

very shortly. Pat Cash is sitting alongside me -- we will be here from

:52:52.:52:56.

Rafa. It got more tenth of the match went on. Rafa was playing very well

:52:57.:53:00.

the first couple of sets. Occasionally he just loses the

:53:01.:53:04.

timing. And he loses aggression. You've got to give credit to Young,

:53:05.:53:10.

he broke back coming he played well, he's a very talented player and he's

:53:11.:53:14.

got at all. The fans don't want to be listening to us while this is

:53:15.:53:19.

going on! Rafa is ripping off his shirt! In any events... I got

:53:20.:53:22.

distracted myself! A little late night entertainment for you. Are you

:53:23.:53:30.

still look like that! Back in the day. He's working his way in the

:53:31.:53:33.

tournament. He would be very satisfied with the way that he

:53:34.:53:37.

served. He's a double full at the wrong time, but basically he served

:53:38.:53:41.

well, he's got his rhythm. He mistimed a few balls, but Young is

:53:42.:53:49.

playing well. Rafa will be happy. Just a couple of matches still going

:53:50.:53:53.

on on quotes three and 12. Camilla Georgia Lees 2-0 up in the third set

:53:54.:53:59.

against Madison Keys. Also into a decider, Elaine Ostapenko, the

:54:00.:54:01.

French Open champion, the newest of the Grand Slam champions is 3-2 up

:54:02.:54:09.

against France was of Canada. But we are going to start today at

:54:10.:54:13.

Wimbledon with looking back on the early action at Centre Court.

:54:14.:54:19.

First out onto court was the British number one, Johanna Konta.

:54:20.:54:29.

She was playing Donna Vekic, who had beaten her in three

:54:30.:54:34.

sets in the final of the Nottingham Open.

:54:35.:54:37.

The crowd had queued overnight. We will join the match in the opening

:54:38.:54:43.

And we join it in the seventh game of the first set.

:54:44.:54:48.

Sam Smith and Kim Clijsters were watching.

:54:49.:54:59.

I always said that I have the strength in my legs from my dad and

:55:00.:55:05.

my frack stability from my mother, he was a footballer and she was a

:55:06.:55:06.

gymnast. -- might flexibility. Konta, smart move, you might have

:55:07.:55:57.

seen her creep into the shade in the back of the court. It is a hot one

:55:58.:56:02.

out there. We might have a top of 27 degrees today. And they are really

:56:03.:56:04.

going for it out here. With the circumstances, like in

:56:05.:56:21.

Australia. We can do heat here, you know, Kim!

:56:22.:56:29.

It's unusual. I like how she steps in after a big

:56:30.:57:14.

serves like that. Because she stays on the court after she lands, and

:57:15.:57:18.

it's almost like she knows that there's a ball coming. -- a short

:57:19.:57:22.

ball coming. No, she's not going to challenge.

:57:23.:57:44.

Just right. Margins are very tight in this opening set. Still on serve,

:57:45.:57:51.

Vekic leading 4-3. STUDIO: Some great tennis.

:57:52.:57:56.

Vekic held for 4-3, and then broke the Konta serve to lead 5-3.

:57:57.:57:59.

Vekic served for the set, but that was the moment

:58:00.:58:02.

that Konta broke back, and eventually the set

:58:03.:58:04.

We picked it up at 4-4 in the tie-break, with Vekic serving.

:58:05.:58:26.

I fear it's the first 27 points, with two points clear. And Johanna

:58:27.:58:44.

with a couple of serves to go now. Using that serve out wide. Just

:58:45.:59:10.

going to have to make it harder than it is. Two set points for the

:59:11.:59:14.

British number one. What a comeback from Konta! It's

:59:15.:59:36.

Great Britain one, Croatia zero, as Konta take the opening set by 7-6.

:59:37.:59:43.

It's fabulous, tight tennis as well. Vekic gives as good as she gets.

:59:44.:59:55.

First game of the second set, Vekic broke, and the momentum seemed

:59:56.:59:58.

Searing heat on Centre Court, and an invasion of flying

:59:59.:00:01.

In the fourth game, Konta broke back.

:00:02.:00:05.

But Vekic broke Konta's serve again, and we join it with her

:00:06.:00:09.

serving for the second set to level things up.

:00:10.:00:13.

And we rejoin us Vekic is serving for the second set.

:00:14.:00:26.

What poison. That the combination that you try to practice. -- what

:00:27.:00:40.

poise. Open up into the". It was a perfect example. It's on, and what a

:00:41.:00:51.

fightback from Croatia's Donna Vekic. She levels.

:00:52.:01:00.

Both served much more solidly in the third set,

:01:01.:01:02.

and 12 service holds later they were at six games

:01:03.:01:05.

all in the final set, where of course there

:01:06.:01:07.

There was, however, some truly great tennis.

:01:08.:01:28.

COMMENTATOR: What a point. Konta and 0-30 now. Really great tennis we are

:01:29.:01:42.

seeing about. The ball just skimming the net.

:01:43.:02:10.

Great pick-up. Vekic got to it and kept it really low, so made it hard

:02:11.:02:23.

for Donna with that shot. -- Konta got it.

:02:24.:02:43.

She's likely to use that serve out wide on that side of the court.

:02:44.:03:15.

A fabulous combination from Donna Vekic. The very first break point of

:03:16.:03:20.

this deciding set. And we pick up the match

:03:21.:04:12.

towards the end of the 18th game. It's 30-30, with Vekic serving

:04:13.:04:20.

to stay in the match. COMMENTATOR: There we go. She knew

:04:21.:04:39.

that second serve was coming to the forehand. It has been a battle

:04:40.:04:58.

royale match point for Konta. It's that easy! A titanic battle a couple

:04:59.:05:11.

of weeks ago on the grass of Nottingham with the final set. This

:05:12.:05:13.

is surpassing even that contest. I think when a match gets to such a

:05:14.:06:37.

stage where there is so little separating you, for me, personally,

:06:38.:06:40.

I can just as easily feel the position. I can feel what it's like

:06:41.:06:45.

to be in her shoes. You feel her pain as well, and it could just of

:06:46.:06:50.

easily as been made on that side of the equation. So I feel very proud

:06:51.:06:55.

of myself and very fortunate to have battled through. You had a number of

:06:56.:06:58.

things to contend with. Obviously, a very good opponent. The sheet. And

:06:59.:07:04.

then suddenly flying ants. There was quite an army of flying ants. I

:07:05.:07:08.

think I've definitely taken home a few as a souvenir in my belly and my

:07:09.:07:14.

bags. I definitely ate a few! You're so careful with your nutrition! I

:07:15.:07:20.

know. I try to get the real lean protein. I'm not sure whether flying

:07:21.:07:23.

ants were a good thing or a bad thing, but she certainly tried to

:07:24.:07:26.

take it in her stride. Was always going to be a battle. It

:07:27.:07:41.

really could have gone either way. Really hot conditions, and the girls

:07:42.:07:47.

were chasing everything down. It was a huge match for both of them. Vekic

:07:48.:07:51.

has got a great future. She was touted as one of the best up and

:07:52.:07:56.

coming players. It took her a little while. She's still very Young. You

:07:57.:08:01.

can see the standard of tennis here. Some of it was under extreme

:08:02.:08:06.

pressure on match point, Vekic serves a monstrous ace. She's got a

:08:07.:08:17.

big serve. Konta, there is good serve there, her ground strokes,

:08:18.:08:20.

she's a good all-round player. Should she be getting more

:08:21.:08:24.

aggressive? Winning makes you positive. We are seeing the

:08:25.:08:28.

highlights of her here. A very good crosscourt backhand. You can see she

:08:29.:08:34.

uses the court very well. That's not an easy shot to take out, looking up

:08:35.:08:40.

in the blue sky and the sun. It's a great performance for her, and she

:08:41.:08:44.

will only gain confidence from that. She talks a lot about staying light

:08:45.:08:48.

in the mind. She did that brilliantly, one step at a time.

:08:49.:08:52.

Let's get a quick update on those two matches still going on. Madison

:08:53.:08:58.

Keys is in big, big trouble. 5-1 down in the deciding set against

:08:59.:09:03.

Camila Giorgi. We could be losing another seed therefore Madison Keys.

:09:04.:09:08.

And what about Jelena Ostapenko, the French Open champion? She is playing

:09:09.:09:13.

on Court 12. Oster Pankow was closing in on victory, but the light

:09:14.:09:23.

is dimming fast. -- Ostapenko. She's actually at match point. A goal that

:09:24.:09:27.

certainly goes for her shots. That's about what the stats are, certainly.

:09:28.:09:36.

We can almost hear her grunting from up here. She blew through the French

:09:37.:09:40.

Open. We've never seen anybody come out like that hitting so many

:09:41.:09:46.

winners. Second serve, attacked on the grass. What that was her very

:09:47.:09:51.

first tour win, wasn't it? It's unbelievable. What an amazing story.

:09:52.:09:58.

That fit! There we go. Well done. Ostapenko into the third round. Live

:09:59.:10:06.

shots were from court 12. COMMENTATOR: Is not always easy to

:10:07.:10:09.

transition from such an amazing position under the grass court

:10:10.:10:11.

Wimbledon with everybody watching you.

:10:12.:10:15.

Meanwhile, we've just had match point number three court, where

:10:16.:10:21.

Madison Keys, who is the 17 seed, has been in big trouble against

:10:22.:10:24.

Camila Giorgi. And the Italian has one. So, Madison Keys is out. This

:10:25.:10:32.

just all adds to the feeling that anything can happen at the moment in

:10:33.:10:36.

women's tennis, and particularly on grass where it can be even more

:10:37.:10:40.

unpredictable. Camila Giorgi has been around for a while. Madison,

:10:41.:10:45.

you would think she would be a little bit disappointed. The Giorgi

:10:46.:10:48.

has played almost every tournament is grass court season and is getting

:10:49.:10:52.

the hang of it. She's only small, but she hits the ball really flat.

:10:53.:10:57.

She gets a serve going, it's tough to pick up. Some people feel much

:10:58.:11:01.

more comfortable here at Wimbledon than they do anywhere else. Possibly

:11:02.:11:06.

one of those is Heather Watson. Two years ago, she very nearly took out

:11:07.:11:13.

Venus Williams. Today, she was up on court wasn't hanging about on first

:11:14.:11:14.

set. COMMENTATOR: There it is, our first

:11:15.:11:35.

break point of the match and six minutes on the clock. What a start

:11:36.:11:37.

for Watson, the British number two. Sevastova is a little bit stunned at

:11:38.:12:13.

the moment. That's it. 80 minutes played, and we

:12:14.:12:33.

have our first set point. -- 18 minutes played. Never a better first

:12:34.:12:47.

set of tennis. Just 19 minutes on the clock.

:12:48.:12:52.

STUDIO: Perhaps not surprisingly, Watson went off at the start of the

:12:53.:12:55.

second set. But she is certainly back on form, as it were, as we

:12:56.:13:06.

rejoin her with Sevastova serving to stay in the match.

:13:07.:13:19.

COMMENTATOR: So, how much does Sevastova want this?

:13:20.:13:40.

We have three match points for Heather Watson to defeat the 18th

:13:41.:14:03.

seed, Anastasija

:14:04.:14:04.
