Good morning. I hope you are in go mode at a time, we are here. I'm

:01:37.:01:49.

going to start with a quote from Chemmy Alcott. "Imagine driving

:01:50.:01:52.

along a motorway at 70mph and sticking your head out of the

:01:53.:01:56.

window. Then add to that weaving past the cars in front and

:01:57.:01:59.

occasionally jumping over a few. It's that fast, that exhilarating

:02:00.:02:06.

and you need that much focus." She is describing what it is like to

:02:07.:02:10.

compete in the women's downhill, and that is the event we are focusing on

:02:11.:02:16.

this morning. Because in Sochi, we are going to be crowning the Queen

:02:17.:02:20.

of speed today. Favourite to ascend the throne is

:02:21.:02:25.

once again Maria Hoefl Reisch. The German took the Super Combined title

:02:26.:02:28.

on Monday and alpine skiing history beckons if she can turn on the

:02:29.:02:31.

burners today. Chemmy Alcott's overcome injury and

:02:32.:02:34.

raised thousands of pounds herself to fund a fourth Olympic campaign.

:02:35.:02:37.

She deserves another shot at this and would love to crack the top ten

:02:38.:02:42.

in the ultimate speed event on skis. It's hurry, hurry, hurry as well in

:02:43.:02:46.

the Ice Cube, where Great Britain's curlers tackle the most dominant

:02:47.:02:49.

women's team so far, the Canadians. This is a big moment for Eve and co.

:02:50.:02:53.

All of Russia is poised to watch every move of the pairs event. Can

:02:54.:02:57.

they win back the title their skaters owned for decades tonight?

:02:58.:03:00.

We'll talk it over with Robin Cousins.

:03:01.:03:01.

And there's a 15-year-old Swiss whizz kid right in the thick of

:03:02.:03:05.

things today as her team takes on the Finns on a key day in women's

:03:06.:03:14.

ice hockey. Well, it does feel a bit like a

:03:15.:03:18.

spring day here in Sochi, temperatures are certainly rising.

:03:19.:03:21.

It is a beautiful day, those birdsong in the air. Snowboarders

:03:22.:03:29.

were getting a little hot under the collar about the warm temperatures

:03:30.:03:34.

compromising the state of the halfpipe. Going up Rosa Khutor, we

:03:35.:03:39.

are hearing that the organisers have been using some of the snow they

:03:40.:03:43.

have stockpiled since last year in giant refrigerating since last year.

:03:44.:03:55.

They are using it to patch up the pistes in the resorts around

:03:56.:03:59.

Krasnaya Polyana in the mountains. Let's hope the conditions are

:04:00.:04:01.

race-worthy of the blue riband event in women's alpine skiing - their

:04:02.:04:05.

downhill. This is where it's happening, at the Rhosa Khutor, The

:04:06.:04:08.

women have already raced on the downhill course as part of the

:04:09.:04:11.

combined event on Monday, but that was from a lower start.

:04:12.:04:14.

So it's the full-length version they'll tackle today. And in the

:04:15.:04:17.

absence of the injured American Lindsey Vonn, the gold medallist in

:04:18.:04:20.

Vancouver, we're going to have new champion today. That's about the

:04:21.:04:23.

only certainty. So how are conditions up on the mountain this

:04:24.:04:26.

morning? Graham Bell was on a very early chairlift for course

:04:27.:04:28.

inspection. This is the forest drop. This is the

:04:29.:04:31.

toughest part of the women's downhill. The gradient is about 38

:04:32.:04:36.

degrees. Just to stand on the slope, you have to stand with your legs

:04:37.:04:41.

well apart and the weight on your outside ski. It is the same way you

:04:42.:04:46.

are racing. You come through Deauville's spine cover stand apart

:04:47.:04:48.

and have the dive forward on this really steep slope and put the

:04:49.:04:54.

weight on that right ski as you go down the three terms. From here on,

:04:55.:04:57.

it is mostly guiding on the lower part of the course and it is

:04:58.:05:03.

possible to make a time. Hoefl-Riesch made a big mistake in

:05:04.:05:08.

the combined downhill but made a time lower down. This part of the

:05:09.:05:12.

course should suit skiers like Anna Fenninger, Lara Gut. Let's have a

:05:13.:05:17.

look at it. Chemmy Alcott just going through her

:05:18.:05:29.

mental visualisation before the start. The snow conditions are

:05:30.:05:34.

absolutely perfect. It has been very warm over the last couple of days

:05:35.:05:38.

but a clear night last night has frozen it, absolutely bullet-proof

:05:39.:05:42.

hard. It will mean the course is lightning fast and it should be a

:05:43.:05:45.

real test. HAZEL IRVINE: Emma and Graham join

:05:46.:05:53.

us this morning. You have seen the course, what sort of race are these

:05:54.:05:56.

conditions going to allow for us today? Well, it froze overnight, the

:05:57.:06:03.

skies cleared up and the thermal blanket of climates disappeared.

:06:04.:06:10.

--clouds. The piste is hard, whether it will stay hard is not sure, the

:06:11.:06:17.

sun is very strong. We are not the most southern of Winter Olympics, I

:06:18.:06:22.

think that was Californian or Nagano in Japan, but Emma, what is the son

:06:23.:06:28.

going to do to the piste? It is absolutely baking here, boiling

:06:29.:06:33.

hot, very much spring conditions. If you look behind us, the bottom third

:06:34.:06:38.

of the course is directly in the sun, so it was soft up. -- soft

:06:39.:06:51.

about private elite --. Adult. -- it will soften up. Yes, I would like to

:06:52.:06:58.

start at number one this. Hoefl-Riesch is the favourite for

:06:59.:07:02.

this, she could make history as an alpine skiing. Remind everybody what

:07:03.:07:08.

at stake for her? Maria Hoefl-Riesch, she will equal the

:07:09.:07:15.

record of four gold medals in Winter Olympics if she wins this. She is

:07:16.:07:21.

starting at 20. If the core softens up, which are think it will, we are

:07:22.:07:29.

one -- going to be looking at early numbers. Julia Mancuso is going 12.

:07:30.:07:35.

I think 20 is a bit late to start. Mancuso has a really good chance,

:07:36.:07:41.

she is coming in with so much confidence and she had a storming

:07:42.:07:44.

combined downhill, so she is a favourite but number one, Sutter,

:07:45.:07:56.

normally it is not good to be number one but conditions today, it is a

:07:57.:08:01.

good one. OK, enjoy it, we will speak to you both later on. I should

:08:02.:08:07.

tell everybody that Chemmy Alcott of Great Britain is skiing number 35,

:08:08.:08:11.

so that is quite late in a field of 42. She is 31. These are her fourth

:08:12.:08:28.

and most likely final Olympics. She produced her best in Turin, 11th in

:08:29.:08:32.

the downhill and after coming back from another major injury, another

:08:33.:08:36.

leg break, she would love to crack the top ten this time.

:08:37.:08:40.

This is the scar where the kneecap was pulled out and then you can see

:08:41.:08:45.

all of the scholars here, there are a few here from surgeries -- the

:08:46.:08:49.

scars. I have a metal nail running from the kneecap to down here. If

:08:50.:08:54.

you touch it, you can feel it is not a real bone. Do you set scanners

:08:55.:09:02.

off? Yes. Can I just say I haven't shaved my legs because I have been

:09:03.:09:11.

working hard at skiing. How many bones is it you have

:09:12.:09:16.

broken? This is my least favourite question because I want to promote

:09:17.:09:23.

the sport skiing, but I have never broken ?45. How much does it mean to

:09:24.:09:30.

be here when up to a month ago, it looked like you wouldn't make it.

:09:31.:09:34.

Speaking I think because it is my fourth Games, people will think I'm

:09:35.:09:45.

not excited. That I'm so excited. Five months before they announced

:09:46.:09:48.

Team GB, I was in hospital having surgery and I was a wreck before

:09:49.:09:51.

they announced my name and it was just a fantastic feeling.

:09:52.:09:58.

It is a very late different look women's downhill this year, no

:09:59.:10:08.

Lindsey Vonn. Who is the favourite? It is tragic that Vonn is not here,

:10:09.:10:14.

because whoever wins it will say they wanted when she did not

:10:15.:10:17.

compete, because she is the star of women's skiing. Skis for the gold

:10:18.:10:26.

medal, she has got it. She has driven us all to be harder and

:10:27.:10:30.

faster and go out and break personal boundaries. And I think because

:10:31.:10:35.

there are so many people that are bubbling under the surface, thinking

:10:36.:10:40.

it could be the Olympics. You have a feel of the mountain, what do you

:10:41.:10:45.

think about the course? I'm really excited. I was the first girl in the

:10:46.:10:50.

start gate today who hadn't skied the course. They have had warm up

:10:51.:10:53.

events over the years and I have been injured every time, and that

:10:54.:10:57.

was refreshing. I felt really young again. I remember going to Salt Lake

:10:58.:11:02.

City in my first Olympics and I was thinking, how'd you do this? And now

:11:03.:11:11.

I have the experience. So talk me through your brain in the start gate

:11:12.:11:16.

before the women's downhill? Do you want to go there? I don't think you

:11:17.:11:21.

will ever understand it. Try me. Chemmy Alcott pushes out at the

:11:22.:11:27.

start. It is knowing how to put yourself in the best environment to

:11:28.:11:33.

cut your limit. The last nine months, it is getting to start gate.

:11:34.:11:38.

It is a challenge, another thing I'm putting myself through. So the best

:11:39.:11:42.

way of judging it is not by position but by what you say? You will be

:11:43.:11:50.

able to tell by how I hold my body on the finish.

:11:51.:11:55.

I will be looking out for that. She really is one of the most positive,

:11:56.:11:59.

life affirming people you could wish to meet and she has been a fantastic

:12:00.:12:03.

ski race of the Great Britain. Graham, four top 14s, six top 20 is

:12:04.:12:14.

at the Olympic Games. How much credited does she deserve? If you

:12:15.:12:17.

care about medals for mental toughness, she would have won so

:12:18.:12:22.

many binder -- if you gave out. She has come back from injury on so many

:12:23.:12:28.

occasions and she always used to ski best on courses that were tougher.

:12:29.:12:33.

She is a real racer's racer and that is why she is so well liked on the

:12:34.:12:38.

tour. A fantastic, positive attitude as well, and it is great to have her

:12:39.:12:43.

here at the Olympic Games and she thoroughly deserves her spot in the

:12:44.:12:50.

start gate. She certainly does. We saw her put down a good run in the

:12:51.:12:54.

super combined, top 16 in the downhill section. We wonder what is

:12:55.:12:57.

possible for her and everyone else as we see the course run. It is time

:12:58.:13:06.

for the women's downhill. Who is going to join the likes of the

:13:07.:13:12.

previous winners? Emma Carrick-Anderson and Matt Chilton,

:13:13.:13:12.

let's find out. MATT CHILTON: Thank you, it is a

:13:13.:13:28.

beautiful day in the Russian mountains, barely a

:13:29.:13:32.

MATT CHILTON: Thank you, it is a beautiful day in the Russian breath

:13:33.:13:35.

of wind. We will look at the vital statistics of this women's downhill

:13:36.:13:50.

course. There are lots of chances for the Swiss today, with

:13:51.:14:06.

Kaufmann-Abderhalden... These other scenes at the top, with final

:14:07.:14:09.

preparations are underway. Very nervous moments for the races. Yes,

:14:10.:14:15.

absolutely, and it is going to be an interesting race. We have incredibly

:14:16.:14:18.

warm temperatures at the bottom. I have been out in the sun and it is

:14:19.:14:22.

eight, nine, 10 degrees already, so the bottom section of the courses

:14:23.:14:25.

really directly in the sunlight, so taking hit. We have just been

:14:26.:14:30.

discussing the best number to have today and this woman in the start

:14:31.:14:33.

gate next we reckon has the best number. Yes, racer no-one, Fabienne

:14:34.:14:46.

Suter. -- number one. The moment has arrived for the fastest women onto

:14:47.:14:51.

skis to ride this Russian roller-coaster in their quest for

:14:52.:14:53.

the ultimate prize in alpine skiing. It is time for the 2014

:14:54.:15:06.

Olympic women's downhill. In a suit or get the Fabienne Suter.

:15:07.:15:15.

Number one could be a good number today. She gets into the groove of

:15:16.:15:25.

this wrath and tough downhill course. -- wrath and tough. It is

:15:26.:15:35.

very shiny out of the start gate. That was a good quick change. She

:15:36.:15:43.

was not dropped low in this section. -- she must not drop low. Getting

:15:44.:15:49.

bounced around. Pretty firm underfoot. It is pretty bone shaking

:15:50.:15:59.

at the top of the course. She has had a pretty solid season so far.

:16:00.:16:05.

She seems to have peaked with her form right in time. A big jump off

:16:06.:16:15.

that tunnel jumper. Carrying good speed. She is driving those hands

:16:16.:16:23.

forward. It is very bumpy. It is Rowley and bumpy. This is the

:16:24.:16:32.

section we fear makes often. You can see the snow spraying up a little

:16:33.:16:36.

bit. This last section is where the sun is beating down. The crowd

:16:37.:16:45.

responding as she races down the final page. She set the pace. It is

:16:46.:16:59.

1:41.94. That is the target. Not a bad run. Slightly slower than the

:17:00.:17:07.

fastest training run. That stand her in good stead. Great slow motion.

:17:08.:17:15.

See how steep it is. The angles they have to get. Some fantastic names on

:17:16.:17:32.

this course. Sounds evil. Jacqueline Wiles, the first of the Americans.

:17:33.:17:47.

She is a youngster. She is a rookie. You can hear her growling on the

:17:48.:18:00.

effects mikes. She is very late in this section. Carrying speed. You

:18:01.:18:08.

must be clean. It is such a long traverse and it falls away massively

:18:09.:18:12.

to the left. The left leg is absolutely screaming by the end of

:18:13.:18:18.

it. Too many mistakes. Plenty of prerace nerves -- prerace nerves.

:18:19.:18:26.

Not expected to feature among the medals. Excellent experience. The

:18:27.:18:39.

girls would definitely have been looking for the warmer weather,

:18:40.:18:44.

warmer snow skis. It is tricky. This bottom section will soft and up.

:18:45.:18:50.

Jacqueline Wiles in her first ever Olympic race, skied well. She will

:18:51.:18:57.

not be challenging for the medals. Fabienne Suter leads the way for

:18:58.:19:03.

Switzerland. The Swiss have plenty of hot razors on the start list

:19:04.:19:13.

today. They have got Lara Gut and Dominik gazing. -- Dominique Gisin.

:19:14.:19:24.

Good crowd today soaking up the sunshine. This is Vicki Regensburg,

:19:25.:19:34.

the first of the Germans. She won an Olympic gold in Vancouver four years

:19:35.:19:38.

ago as giant slalom champion. Not a great start. She has an unusual

:19:39.:19:48.

style. She stands quite told and has a high arm carriage. That very top

:19:49.:19:55.

gate, where she sort of slipped, I think the ice called her. It is

:19:56.:20:01.

super slick up there. It almost looks like they have just thrown

:20:02.:20:08.

lots of water on that first gate. She should enjoy the technical

:20:09.:20:19.

section. Carrying great speed. The mistake that she made has caught up

:20:20.:20:25.

with her. Still in touch. The deficit is now up to have a second.

:20:26.:20:29.

It maybe too much for her to make up. She will come into her own next

:20:30.:20:37.

week for the super-g and the giant slalom.

:20:38.:20:50.

Vicky Regensburg comes through. The first of the Germans. Good enough

:20:51.:20:56.

for second at the moment. Beautiful slow motion. Her hands are

:20:57.:21:11.

a bit close. She needs to get them in front. It is all about keeping

:21:12.:21:17.

aerodynamic in the gliding sections of the downhill. The first and only

:21:18.:21:28.

French racer in the competition today.

:21:29.:21:50.

Marie Marshall RVA is France's only competitor here today. -- Marie

:21:51.:22:02.

Marchand-Arvier. Completely helpless as she tried to control the mistake

:22:03.:22:07.

of the job. Then she had to brace herself as she hid the safety

:22:08.:22:13.

netting. The net is designed to bounce the skiers back onto her

:22:14.:22:18.

slope. She is moving gingerly. I am happy to see she is moving very

:22:19.:22:23.

slightly as we await the arrival of the medics. Upper body twisted. That

:22:24.:22:32.

was a big mistake. There was nothing she could do. It looked like she was

:22:33.:22:36.

going to recover. At the last minute she caught the edge. A concerned

:22:37.:22:45.

look on the face of the French coach. She felt pretty hard on her

:22:46.:22:53.

back. They do wear back protection but hopefully it is not a back

:22:54.:23:01.

injury. If she stands up from that, it shows how amazingly athletic

:23:02.:23:07.

these racers are. To be a good ski racers, you have to do it all, you

:23:08.:23:11.

have to be able to recover from these positions going at 70 mph. She

:23:12.:23:18.

almost crushes the skis. I think she catches the edge. There was nothing

:23:19.:23:25.

she could do. She is staring at the safety netting. That is a horrible

:23:26.:23:31.

moment for her. She hits her head as well. Shocking scenes for everybody.

:23:32.:23:38.

I am absolutely delighted to say, and are very relieved to say, that

:23:39.:23:43.

Marie Marchand-Arvier has somehow bounced back of the safety netting,

:23:44.:23:46.

has picked herself up and hopefully will be OK. And remarkably she is

:23:47.:23:56.

back on her skis. What a recovery. They build them tough in the

:23:57.:24:03.

Chamonix valley, where she is from. There is a great cheer and flags

:24:04.:24:08.

flying down here. The spectators so happy to see standing on her feet.

:24:09.:24:14.

Difficult for this lady at the start gate. A hugely confident racer with

:24:15.:24:22.

massive experience. It is a little unnerving when you know that

:24:23.:24:25.

somebody in front of you has taken a big crash. Words of instruction from

:24:26.:24:38.

the American coach. Fabienne Suter is still the leader. A very nervous

:24:39.:24:47.

atmosphere at the bottom of the hill now after that crashed to Marie

:24:48.:24:54.

Marchand-Arvier. This is the slow model for Fabienne Suter. Next to go

:24:55.:25:06.

is Nicole Hosp. It has frozen overnight. It won frozen overnight.

:25:07.:25:09.

The afternoon. The top part of the course is running a little faster

:25:10.:25:13.

than it has been in training. The bottom section will be slower. That

:25:14.:25:19.

is the scene at the top. Everybody is kind of warm and comfortable up

:25:20.:25:29.

there. They still need to seek a log fire in a mountain restaurant. It is

:25:30.:25:36.

very alpine, this part of the Western Caucasus. The mountains are

:25:37.:25:41.

absolutely stunning. Some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We

:25:42.:25:46.

may get a view of some of the girls with their boots in the snow. It is

:25:47.:25:50.

important to keep the boots at the right temperature. Nicole Hosp.

:25:51.:26:06.

These silver medallist from the super combined gets the start in the

:26:07.:26:11.

downhill following that excellent performance in the super combined.

:26:12.:26:16.

Solid times in training. She was fastest in training number four. She

:26:17.:26:23.

knows there has been an accident in front. She has been asked to delay.

:26:24.:26:27.

She has to put that out of her mind and attack this Olympic downhill

:26:28.:26:41.

course. She has got work to do. Nicole Hosp a little bit ragged on

:26:42.:26:46.

the steep section, bouncing sideways. Not quite as committed as

:26:47.:26:50.

she could be. She is skiing a good line. She is making by little bit of

:26:51.:27:00.

time. Good work so far for a Nicole Hosp.

:27:01.:27:10.

She likes gliding sections. See needs to stay low. This is where I

:27:11.:27:17.

think today will come down to the skis. It would be interesting as she

:27:18.:27:22.

comes up to the must next split. -- this next split. A tricky gate

:27:23.:27:41.

coming up. Not bad. Long, fast, sweeping turns. Ride and glided

:27:42.:27:52.

towards the finishing line. -- glide. Good enough for a second. She

:27:53.:27:59.

is not celebrating or celebrating yet, Fabienne Suter. But she holds

:28:00.:28:05.

on to gold at the moment. Not a bad run. She got twisted up at the top.

:28:06.:28:15.

The back of the ski came out. That is not ideal.

:28:16.:28:35.

Fiery competitor next. Quick changes. A huge flight. As soon as

:28:36.:29:00.

they land, the inside edge of the left ski hat to crank into the snow

:29:01.:29:05.

to make that turn. There's not time to react. That is not the ideal

:29:06.:29:11.

line. They did talk about it many times. You do not need to be too

:29:12.:29:17.

high on this part. You can let it drop down. If you are high, it is

:29:18.:29:27.

slow. The chance Merkel has already gone for Marusa Ferk. Slovenian's

:29:28.:29:35.

with good chances today, especially with Tina Maze, who starts at 21.

:29:36.:29:39.

Then the solitary jump, massive flight, twice as well as we saw from

:29:40.:29:47.

Nicole Hosp. I don't think Marusa Ferk has been fully in control since

:29:48.:29:54.

she left the start gate. She is 1.3 seconds off the pace, into fourth

:29:55.:30:01.

position. Very disappointing bottom section, she will be furious. She

:30:02.:30:05.

has skied discourse for times and she knows the mistake over the last

:30:06.:30:10.

jump will have cost her. She was far too low and then took a massive

:30:11.:30:17.

flight. Fabienne Suter leads, Nicole Hosp is second, Rebensburg is third

:30:18.:30:26.

for the moment. Laurenne Ross is ready to go at the top of the

:30:27.:30:32.

course. Pushes out of the start, makes the first left footed term.

:30:33.:30:40.

Smooth at the top. Ross is also a very talented musician, so when

:30:41.:30:44.

she's not spending time on skis and training, playing various

:30:45.:30:54.

instruments. We have had a few nasty crashes through Devil's Spine. This

:30:55.:31:01.

is good. Laurenne Ross had that horrendous crash in the World Cup

:31:02.:31:07.

downhill a couple of seasons ago which caused her to have 40 stitches

:31:08.:31:10.

in her forehead. She had a collision between the back of the top of her

:31:11.:31:16.

helmet and the top of her goggles. Living dangerously, good recovery!

:31:17.:31:23.

There might be a greater gap at the next intermediate following that

:31:24.:31:27.

mistake. It is not bad, though, very much in touch. And doesn't it just

:31:28.:31:32.

show what huge mental strength these athletes have, to be able to come

:31:33.:31:37.

back from crashes like that, put it behind them and put pedal to the

:31:38.:31:41.

metal. Flying down the last section where it is bubbly and soft. Took

:31:42.:31:46.

the solitary jump well. The chance to get in among the top three here.

:31:47.:31:53.

Laurenne Ross is in bronze for the moment. Some Suter holding goal,

:31:54.:32:02.

Nicole Hosp is in silver-medal position and now Laurenne Ross is in

:32:03.:32:06.

bronze-medal position. What a beautiful slow motion. She is happy

:32:07.:32:19.

with that run, delighted. Next to go, the second Swiss racer to tackle

:32:20.:32:25.

the Olympic downhill, Dominique Gisin, from ankle Burke, who has had

:32:26.:32:35.

solid results all season. Seventh in Valdez area, eighth in Cortina in

:32:36.:32:43.

the most recent World Cup race -- second in Val d'Isere. She is just

:32:44.:32:52.

back. Her team-mate Suter will have given her a great support, we should

:32:53.:32:57.

hope, so she will know exactly how the courses running. A little bit

:32:58.:33:01.

late in the line, it may have cost her another tent. She has the green

:33:02.:33:07.

light, good work in the middle part of the course from Dominique Gisin,

:33:08.:33:15.

gliding nicely. Adjusting her eyesight as she changes and moves

:33:16.:33:19.

from shade to sunshine, and it is getting better. Two tenths in

:33:20.:33:26.

friend. Watch those legs pumping as she goes up and over the bumps.

:33:27.:33:32.

Getting that heap inside the term. She takes it well. -- her hip inside

:33:33.:33:43.

the term. Lots of noise from the Swiss fans as the cow bells ring.

:33:44.:33:48.

They already had the lead in the shape of Fabienne Suter, can they

:33:49.:33:52.

make it one, too. They can. Dominique Gisin is in gold. Suter

:33:53.:33:59.

slips to second. Switzerland are one, two in the women's Olympic

:34:00.:34:00.

downhill. This was her out of the start. The

:34:01.:34:14.

important thing at the start is it the shins that go through that one

:34:15.:34:25.

blast. A power through. The arms are low, aerodynamic, pumping her hands.

:34:26.:34:27.

She is delighted. Next up, Daniela Merighetti, the

:34:28.:34:42.

first of the Italians to go this morning. It has been a tough week

:34:43.:34:46.

for Merighetti, she had a nasty crash of that last solitary jump on

:34:47.:34:52.

the first run and she has had only one training run, so she will be

:34:53.:34:56.

playing around still with the line and, hopefully, yes, she is, she is

:34:57.:35:01.

up, say she is really putting her foot down. Great skiing. You must

:35:02.:35:08.

take the speed through this section. A little twitch sideways. She had an

:35:09.:35:13.

advantage but then a couple of mistakes. It didn't seem to affect

:35:14.:35:22.

her speed. She is drifting up and down away from Gisin's time. Still

:35:23.:35:26.

in the hunt for a place in amongst the medal positions. She did hurt

:35:27.:35:31.

her knee on that first training run but it is not holding her back and

:35:32.:35:37.

what a great run so far. A little bit upright of that jump. Merighetti

:35:38.:35:43.

has thrown everything at the women's Olympic downhill course. She

:35:44.:35:47.

drifted so wide of the racing line. She seems to be out of steam. It

:35:48.:35:52.

might have cost her her chance. It has, she has gone into silver. She

:35:53.:35:58.

made a mistake on a final pitch, and huge relief for Dominique Gisin.

:35:59.:36:06.

Well, after the tough week she has had, she will be pretty happy with

:36:07.:36:11.

that run. It was a shame, a couple of uncharacteristic errors at the

:36:12.:36:15.

end. A little bit of a lack of focus, just getting tired, maybe the

:36:16.:36:22.

soft snow throwing her. Dominique Gisin leads, Merighetti second,

:36:23.:36:27.

Fabienne Suter, who was first down the hill, is third. The next race at

:36:28.:36:32.

ago is Stacey Cook from California. -- the next racer to go. 11th in

:36:33.:36:44.

Vancouver, she will be looking to build on that. That was a very gutsy

:36:45.:36:51.

edge change. She has to make a good move here. Over the tales of her

:36:52.:36:56.

skis, did well to recover on landing. A sign of the commitment to

:36:57.:37:02.

the cause. And then she was almost horizontal. Yes, the outside ski was

:37:03.:37:06.

flapping around, she did really well to control that. It is a good line

:37:07.:37:12.

out of here but not as quick as it should be. The mistakes have caught

:37:13.:37:19.

up with her, then to three quarters of a second, now exactly a second

:37:20.:37:23.

off the pace. So the medal chances have already vanished. Clocking 99

:37:24.:37:32.

point -- 99. Stacey Cook's run has been littered

:37:33.:37:54.

with mistakes. In the end, she is the seventh fastest. The Americans

:37:55.:38:02.

with plenty of chances to come. Julia Mancuso starts at number 12,

:38:03.:38:05.

she was fastest in the super combined downhill. That was the big

:38:06.:38:11.

error. It is difficult it folds away, you have to stretch the right

:38:12.:38:15.

leg out and stand on that ski so early and a lot of the girls are

:38:16.:38:23.

doing the turn on the inside ski. Hoefl-Riesch smiling, she will be a

:38:24.:38:26.

ball of notes at the moment. Already an Olympic champion, this is the one

:38:27.:38:33.

she really wants. Next ago, Fanchini. Both of the sisters racing

:38:34.:38:40.

today, Nvidia is -- Nadia is racing later. A double edge check, not a

:38:41.:38:48.

great start. She has to stay forward. She needs to throw herself

:38:49.:38:57.

into the front. Three top five finishes in World Cup downhill races

:38:58.:39:11.

this year. She has started nicely. Into the Bolshoy reverse, Highline,

:39:12.:39:15.

needs to let it go. She has to focus in and out of the bumps, but those

:39:16.:39:20.

mistakes have caught up with her. Her sister Nadia possibly has the

:39:21.:39:26.

secret ingredient to do well today, coming later. She was the silver

:39:27.:39:29.

medallist at the world championships last year. You know you will get

:39:30.:39:35.

full attack from Nadia. Elena has made too many mistakes and looks a

:39:36.:39:42.

little bit cautious. Had to put them sideways in that tricky turn before

:39:43.:39:49.

the last jump. Dominique Gisin's leading time is

:39:50.:39:58.

next to go, Julia Mancuso, already a medallist from Championships. All

:39:59.:40:14.

eyes will be on Mancuso as she makes her preparation. She is about to

:40:15.:40:21.

step forward in the start gate. Lara Gut is going through her

:40:22.:40:24.

preparations, 18 is her start number, a big favourite. Mancuso is

:40:25.:40:34.

already prepped and set to start. She set the fastest time in the

:40:35.:40:37.

super combined downhill, she likes this course. She has proved she is

:40:38.:40:42.

able to conquer this cause. It matters most today, it is downhill

:40:43.:40:48.

Day. Mancuso charging at the top. Mancuso really knows how to turn it

:40:49.:40:53.

on at this big event, she loves the big stage and if anyone can do it,

:40:54.:40:58.

she well. Practice huge! What a landing, and what a start.

:40:59.:41:05.

Horizontal, fully engaged with the Olympic downhill course. Silver

:41:06.:41:08.

medallist four years ago behind Lindsey Vonn, she has come for the

:41:09.:41:13.

gold in 2014. A beautiful top section, through the Bolshoy

:41:14.:41:20.

Traverse, just lost a tenth, but it is great skiing. Low, dynamic and

:41:21.:41:25.

aggressive. She was fantastic on this flat section the other day, can

:41:26.:41:31.

she turn it on again today? A quarter of a second slower as she

:41:32.:41:33.

approaches the bottom third of the course. Stepping a little wide,

:41:34.:41:39.

seemed to be flapping slightly with her hands, looking for the ideal

:41:40.:41:45.

tuck position. She is taking on an early line in the last two terms.

:41:46.:41:50.

Has she been able to claw back the last time -- turns. Nearly a full

:41:51.:41:59.

second down, too many errors. Mancuso possibly pushing too hard at

:42:00.:42:03.

the top. She will be furious with that last section, she fell into the

:42:04.:42:09.

hole. She let it slip away and then the jump, she hardly took off. These

:42:10.:42:16.

top terms were sensational, look at the angle she gets, the casually

:42:17.:42:24.

drops the hip cashback lookout she drops. Medal today, so Gisin of

:42:25.:42:36.

Switzerland has gold. This is Kajsa Kling, she could be a surprise

:42:37.:42:44.

package. She has had a surprise season where she has scored top ten

:42:45.:42:50.

results in the giant slalom on the World Cup tour. She had a third and

:42:51.:42:54.

fourth in training, she could be one to look at. Good top section, not a

:42:55.:43:00.

huge flight, managed to stay low. She needs to stand on the right ski

:43:01.:43:06.

and she does it. Kajsa Kling fighting her way through the icy

:43:07.:43:10.

section. It is dark and dingy in places but she will burst back into

:43:11.:43:14.

the bright Russian sunshine in a moment and will get better

:43:15.:43:20.

visibility. It is probably too far away to get in amongst the medals.

:43:21.:43:25.

She is more upright than she should be. She came into Bolshoy traverse

:43:26.:43:32.

more tentative than she should be. She needs to be lower, the chest is

:43:33.:43:38.

upright. The top three are separated by less than four tenths of a

:43:39.:43:42.

second. Not much room in the medal places. It needs to be faultless

:43:43.:43:49.

from top to bottom. Kajsa Kling sets up her skis for the final role and

:43:50.:43:54.

glides towards the line. She is a long way behind in the end. No luck

:43:55.:44:00.

today for the young Swede. More chances to come, her best

:44:01.:44:07.

potentially in the Olympic super G. That long outside leg, she changes

:44:08.:44:12.

over and gets the ski to bite. And she was close to beating out. The

:44:13.:44:20.

boot clips nearly hit the snow. Dominique Gisin leads the way for

:44:21.:44:30.

Switzerland. In the start gate, wearing number 14 for Austria, this

:44:31.:44:40.

Cornelia Huetter. Austria's best chance of success comes with Anna

:44:41.:44:47.

Fenninger. Putting those hands forward. A little compression.

:44:48.:44:58.

Straight into the job. -- jump. She needs to push harder. This is the

:44:59.:45:09.

important bit. Stay low. Bumpy through this section. Last time we

:45:10.:45:19.

got a check on the time, nor .32. -- 0.32. Her chance has slipped away.

:45:20.:45:28.

Not looking comfortable on this course at all. It may be just

:45:29.:45:43.

softening up. The last of the gates for Cornelia Huetter of Austria. Her

:45:44.:45:48.

first Olympic experience. No danger to the provision -- provisional

:45:49.:45:52.

medallists. Switzerland, Italy, Switzerland, the

:45:53.:46:09.

one, the one, two, three at the moment. Some of the fastest skiers

:46:10.:46:21.

in the world yet to come. Julia Mancuso in conversation with

:46:22.:46:33.

Dominique Gisin. Carolina Ruiz Castillo for Spain. She had her

:46:34.:46:39.

first ever World Cup downhill after years of coming close last spring in

:46:40.:46:45.

France. She finally won a World Cup race. She is coached by my fellow

:46:46.:46:58.

Scot, Mark Tilson. A pretty good start. She is taking the course on.

:46:59.:47:10.

She was late there. That will have cost her. May just cost her the

:47:11.:47:17.

chance of getting near the leaders. Great top quarter. Then it started

:47:18.:47:25.

to fall away for the Spanish skier. Very unforgiving, the Forest drop.

:47:26.:47:42.

It is in the shade. She is out. She managed to slow herself right then

:47:43.:47:46.

before she hit the nets. I hope she is OK. It is a tricky turn. She

:47:47.:47:55.

didn't stand on the left ski. There was nothing she could do. If she had

:47:56.:47:59.

stood on it from there, she would have been very slow. It has been

:48:00.:48:07.

full of drama so far. The skiers that have fallen have stood up and

:48:08.:48:12.

walked away. Dominique Gisin is fastest. Daniela Merighetti is in

:48:13.:48:17.

silver position and Fabienne Suter in bronze.

:48:18.:48:33.

We have got the fastest races in terms of form coming up next, as

:48:34.:48:41.

they try to untangle Carolina Ruiz Castillo from that first line of

:48:42.:48:47.

netting. They have three lines of netting. Just in case. Things really

:48:48.:48:59.

hotting up now. We have got some exceptional races at the top. We

:49:00.:49:05.

have Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden coming up next. Lara Gut. Elizabeth

:49:06.:49:12.

gurgle. -- Elizabeth gurgle. Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden had a

:49:13.:49:30.

terrific breakthrough season. She won in Valdez air just before

:49:31.:49:33.

Christmas. Some salt being put down on the course.

:49:34.:49:41.

Trying to keep the course firm. These delays will not help. The

:49:42.:49:49.

longer the sunshine hits the course, the softer it will get. We are ready

:49:50.:49:51.

to resume. Tina Weirather is not racing today.

:49:52.:50:06.

We move on to Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden. The winner of

:50:07.:50:15.

the World Cup downhill before Christmas. Her debut World Cup win.

:50:16.:50:21.

On form. She went well in training. See is a very tall, powerful

:50:22.:50:27.

athlete. I said without the other day and she above May. -- I sat with

:50:28.:50:37.

her. Nice and high. Diving down. She has to be quick.

:50:38.:50:46.

Going well so far. A good racing line. Well within the blue racing

:50:47.:50:57.

corridor. She drifted too far. Another one comes to a stop

:50:58.:51:02.

prematurely. No finish today for Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden. Goss,

:51:03.:51:09.

they have really got was sitting on the edge of our seats today. She

:51:10.:51:13.

went inside and she does so well to stand up from that. Athleticism at

:51:14.:51:19.

its best. Abbot of slopestyle action. Dominique Gisin happy to see

:51:20.:51:25.

there was no contact. She stays in gold medal position. I think she is

:51:26.:51:34.

recovering there. That is such a shock. You come through there with

:51:35.:51:41.

such speed. For that to happen, the pulse will be racing. The queue

:51:42.:51:57.

continues to form. Tina Maze looking composed at the top. All eyes will

:51:58.:52:01.

be on Lara Gut, the pin-up girl of Swiss sport. Ready to risk the

:52:02.:52:07.

Olympic downhill. Anna Fenninger, the best of the Austrians today,

:52:08.:52:14.

potentially. She runs at 22. Switzerland with gold and bronze

:52:15.:52:22.

abysmally. -- provisionally. Can their golden girl turn things

:52:23.:52:35.

around. -- you Mac --? Lara Gut for Switzerland. Big push. Couple of

:52:36.:52:43.

skates. First turn approaches rapidly. She has had a cracking

:52:44.:52:47.

season. She has had World Cup went in downhill. She has had three wins

:52:48.:52:54.

in super-g and one in giant slalom. Can she make it happen today?

:52:55.:53:02.

Downhill day in Sochi. Nice landing. Smooth and effortless so far. In

:53:03.:53:07.

touch. 17 hundredths of a second off the pace of team-mate Dominique

:53:08.:53:13.

Gisin. With her team-mates in first and third, it will have spurred her

:53:14.:53:17.

on even more. It may be that you are in the team, but on the course you

:53:18.:53:22.

are on your own. She has got the green light. She is pushing hard.

:53:23.:53:27.

She does not want to be forth. She wants to be first. Seven hundredths

:53:28.:53:35.

ahead at the last intermediate. Now she is nine hundredths behind. She

:53:36.:53:40.

keeps herself in the hunt. Pushing hard. Travelling beautifully across

:53:41.:53:53.

the snow in the drive. She switches on the green light again. 12

:53:54.:53:59.

hundredths of a second in front. It has been effortless, it has been

:54:00.:54:03.

faultless, it has been fast for a Lara Gut so far. Easy over her skis.

:54:04.:54:13.

Fast movement. Note she can set up and write and glide for the line.

:54:14.:54:22.

Lara Gut is second for Switzerland! Silver medal position. Dominique

:54:23.:54:28.

Gisin clings onto gold. Switzerland first, second and fourth. Dominique

:54:29.:54:36.

Gisin has gold. Lara Gut has skied into silver medal position. Holding

:54:37.:54:43.

her head. She skied that so well. It is difficult to see where she lost

:54:44.:54:52.

it. Maybe just the last turn. Maybe she wanted to make contact with the

:54:53.:54:55.

snow a little bit earlier. That was close. Gold medal position for

:54:56.:55:09.

Dominique Gisin. Lara Gut in silver. She will throw everything at this

:55:10.:55:16.

hill. Double world champion in 2011. She won the downhill and the

:55:17.:55:25.

super-g. She gave that control gave a massive cloud. Her face said it

:55:26.:55:32.

all in the start gate. She means business. But sometimes she pushes

:55:33.:55:38.

too hard. Hitting those two gates was not the ideal line. Doing that

:55:39.:55:49.

at 70 mph is not good. She had a good Olympics last time around.

:55:50.:55:53.

Taking the bronze medal in this, the downhill, and in the giant slalom.

:55:54.:55:59.

Her mother was an Olympic bronze medallist in 1964 in Innsbruck and

:56:00.:56:06.

four years before that. She comes from a great racing pedigree. This

:56:07.:56:11.

is still pretty solid. With just over a quarter of a second between

:56:12.:56:16.

gold, silver and bronze, she may be too far away to get amongst them.

:56:17.:56:25.

The next split will tell us. Just under half a second down. She is

:56:26.:56:33.

clawing the time back. Not bad. A little bit low in the line. She

:56:34.:56:42.

needs to be soft. Soft skiing. The Austrians already have the men's

:56:43.:56:46.

Olympic downhill champion with Matthias Mayer taking the gold on

:56:47.:56:52.

Sunday. She has missed her chance. She is ten. -- 10th. All eyes as far

:56:53.:57:01.

as Austria is concerned will be fixed on Anna Fenninger. Different

:57:02.:57:07.

position from the girls before. Standing well on the outside ski.

:57:08.:57:15.

Chemmy Alcott racing today. She will start with baby number 35. There is

:57:16.:57:26.

the leader. The two Swiss racer 's embrace. They are in gold and silver

:57:27.:57:31.

medal positions at the moment. Dominique Gisin, a nervous wait for

:57:32.:57:34.

her. She will be watching the big screen carefully. It is the turn of

:57:35.:57:38.

the Olympics super combined champion, Maria Hoefl-Riesch from

:57:39.:57:46.

Germany. This is the one she really wants. She won the slalom and super

:57:47.:57:52.

combined last time. She has already won the Sochi super combined in

:57:53.:57:57.

2014. See is disappointed that the course has slowed down. She likes

:57:58.:58:06.

it's fast. -- she likes it fast. She was a second behind in the combined

:58:07.:58:10.

downhill. She did all the good work in the slalom. She has to let it

:58:11.:58:15.

run. She is low and late. She is letting it slip away. That may have

:58:16.:58:21.

cost her a medal. Have a second down. Her deficit has doubled from

:58:22.:58:29.

0.24 to 0.50. It may be too much to ask. She will be mad with herself.

:58:30.:58:37.

She knows she has made those mistakes. This is the party has to

:58:38.:58:41.

keep the skis flat, let them swim on the snow. Just glide on the bass

section. The time is slipping away. She has found a couple of tenths of

:58:55.:58:59.

a second between split point number three and intermediate number four.

:59:00.:59:04.

The time is having right direction. Off the final jump. Then she can see

:59:05.:59:11.

the finishing line. The black and strikes of the German sitcom into

view at the foot of the Olympic downhill course. The time to beat,

:59:16.:59:29.

one minute, is close. It is ninth. relief for Dominique Gisin, she's

:59:30.:59:35.

starting to believe now. Still to come, Tina gaz and Fenninger. --

:59:36.:59:53.

Tina maze. Those little mistakes will start to come back and haunt

:59:54.:00:05.

her. Gisin in gold at the moment, then Suter and Merighetti. Tina Maze

:00:06.:00:12.

to come, she is away for Slovenia. She has changed her coach after a

:00:13.:00:16.

mediocre start of the season and when she switched coaches,

:00:17.:00:20.

immediately saw success, with victory in the Cortina. Mays did so

:00:21.:00:28.

well in the downhill combined -- Tina Maze. She is really going to

:00:29.:00:34.

want to make the podium today. It is great skiing, it is smooth. And she

:00:35.:00:41.

is throwing caution to the win. The line is perfect. So far, so good.

:00:42.:00:52.

And Maze is faster by nine hundredths of a second, green lights

:00:53.:00:57.

all the way so far for the Slovenia. I am loving the language

:00:58.:01:02.

:01:09.:01:16.

Aiming to become the most successful Slovenian Olympian of all time. She

:01:17.:01:22.

needs to be ahead at the next split and she is getting quicker and

:01:23.:01:28.

quicker. I have goose pimples watching this, it is incredible

:01:29.:01:34.

skiing. Not a bad line, a small mistake as maybe cost her one tenth.

:01:35.:01:38.

The flight not as big as she could have made it. Trainer Mays, onto the

final pitch -- Tina Maze, onto the final pitch, hoping to break Swiss

hearts. Skiing for the gold medal. She is dead level with Gisin!

:01:53.:02:01.

Equal. 1:41.57. If it stays like that, they will have to find an

extra gold medal. Belied for the Slovenian supporters. Tina Maze and

:02:09.:02:12.

Dominique Gisin share gold-medal position -- relief for. Merighetti

:02:13.:02:23.

off the podium. She needed that result, such a brilliant run. Just a

:02:24.:02:29.

small mistake on the tricky last turn before solitary jump, but what

:02:30.:02:35.

a cracker. Anna Fenninger is ready to go at the top. Celebrations going

:02:36.:02:41.

on at the foot of the cause but Fenninger is fast, she is focused --

:02:42.:02:49.

the course. The Austrians are off to a good start, having the men's

:02:50.:02:54.

downhill Olympic title. We'll Fenninger have the women's? I like

:02:55.:02:59.

to watch her ski. She will commit to the outside ski. A good start. She

:03:00.:03:08.

has all of the Austrian resources behind her... She has ground to a

:03:09.:03:13.

halt and it is over. She will go no further. And Gisin smiles from

:03:14.:03:21.

behind her skis. She will be sharing the limelight shortly with Tina

:03:22.:03:26.

Maze, who is not yet off her knees. Anna Fenninger's race ends

:03:27.:03:33.

prematurely. Disappointment. So in all of the drama that has been

:03:34.:03:38.

unfolding, let's remind you. Dominique Gisin set the early pace,

:03:39.:03:43.

held it until Tina Maze came through with exactly the same time,

:03:44.:03:51.

1:42.57. Those two are sharing the gold medal at this stage. And Lana

:03:52.:04:01.

Gude is in cons -- bronze-medal position. Someone. -- for

:04:02.:04:11.

Switzerland. Fenninger just failing to stand on that left a ski. It is

:04:12.:04:16.

so difficult in that steep section. You don't see on TV how difficult

:04:17.:04:23.

that parties. Smiles all round for Maze and Gisin. That change of coach

:04:24.:04:28.

and a return to form timed perfectly for Tina Maze. I just had a funny

:04:29.:04:35.

feeling about Maze today. Just had a feeling. Fenninger finding her way

:04:36.:04:42.

down, a lonely ski down for Anna Fenninger. Mancuso there to

:04:43.:04:51.

congratulate Tina Maze. Let's check on the standings. You cannot split

:04:52.:04:52.

them, they are tied for the gold. Just to keep you up-to-date with

:04:53.:05:09.

what is happening, we have British interest in the women's downhill

:05:10.:05:13.

today, Chemmy Alcott will be starting at number 35.

:05:14.:05:29.

She was just saying there, basically, that it is an incredible

:05:30.:05:35.

feeling, what a great race, she said it was amazing. You speak Swiss

:05:36.:05:45.

German as well? Yes. Great scenes, as Maze bent down to embrace the

:05:46.:05:57.

Russian snow. She is on course to become the first-ever Olympic

:05:58.:06:04.

downhill gold medallist for Slovenia. And the tears are already

:06:05.:06:12.

flowing for Dominique Gisin. It is a long wait for the girls at the

:06:13.:06:15.

finish, but two great runs, it is going to be difficult to beat. It is

:06:16.:06:28.

nice to be able to listen into their post race thoughts. Others with

:06:29.:06:34.

prerace thoughts. This is Verena Stuffer. Ready to go, she has had

:06:35.:06:45.

some pretty good results this season but this would be a big surprise, if

:06:46.:06:48.

she was too upset the standings here. She will have heard about

:06:49.:06:57.

Maze's amazing run and it will give her confidence. Everybody knew the

:06:58.:07:00.

conditions would slow down and soften up at the bottom. This is a

:07:01.:07:09.

promising start. The difference between the top three is one tenth

:07:10.:07:13.

of a second, which I think is exactly as it was for the men's

:07:14.:07:19.

downhill. Very tight at the top here at the men's and women's Olympic

:07:20.:07:21.

downhill. A lot of a lot of cutting out the final turn.

:07:22.:07:45.

She is a bit more open than she could be. In this flat section, you

:07:46.:07:54.

have got to stay low, hands near the face, aerodynamic. Still good for

:07:55.:07:58.

Verena Stuffer, she could get in the top ten places here. She has skied

:07:59.:08:07.

solidly. Through the section, smoothly, the middle line. Then to

:08:08.:08:15.

the spectacular conclusion of this course, coming into the stadium. The

:08:16.:08:22.

slalom in the middle, the men's downhill to the left. And she has

:08:23.:08:24.

just missed the top ten, she is 11. A lot of great scenes there, a lot

:08:25.:08:50.

of camaraderie between the races. At the end of the day, you are in it

:08:51.:08:54.

for yourself, but when you are off the hill, it is a nice atmosphere.

:08:55.:09:03.

Back to the start, still plenty of racers to come and number 24 is Mo

:09:04.:09:07.

Winkle of Norway, who had a good super combined, finishing sixth

:09:08.:09:19.

overall -- Ragnhild Mowinckel. She is one of the rising Starts within

:09:20.:09:28.

the Norwegian team. -- rising stars. Taking good speed into this

:09:29.:09:35.

section. Really diving down the hill. But she is late, and a little

:09:36.:09:45.

bit more time will have stepped away. A couple of tenths lost and

:09:46.:09:53.

now it is three quarters of a second, it is a big difference.

:09:54.:10:00.

Getting worst for my Winkle. -- Mowinckel. Trouble for Mowinckel she

:10:01.:10:13.

drifts way off into the soft snow and has to start all over again. So

:10:14.:10:25.

Maze's name showing against number one but it should be with Gisin,

:10:26.:10:31.

because we have a tie for first. Mowinckel in 19th. We just see her

:10:32.:10:45.

landing of the tunnel jump -- off the tunnel jump. It is a very

:10:46.:10:53.

straight section after that. Mixed emotions. Huge disappointment for

:10:54.:10:56.

many, delight for many, the light of the sun. The racing continues with

:10:57.:11:04.

the Hungarian Edit Miklos, on her way at the top of the course. Yes,

:11:05.:11:12.

mixed emotions, it is the Olympic Games, it doesn't get bigger than

:11:13.:11:15.

that and there is so much emotion, so much sweat that has gone into the

:11:16.:11:19.

four years prior to this event and if it goes wrong, it is just

:11:20.:11:23.

devastating. If it goes well, there is not a better feeling. Stivoting,

:11:24.:11:31.

not very controlled as she dives into that section. She had a good

:11:32.:11:40.

downhill leg on the super combined, 16th overall. Her hand in the snow

:11:41.:11:45.

as she comes into Bolshoy Traverse. Not bad at all. She needs to stay

:11:46.:11:49.

low, strong on the left ski, hands up in front of her face. Comes into

:11:50.:11:58.

the flat section, in and out of the shade and son. Realistically, top-10

:11:59.:12:02.

result would be something to celebrate for Edit Miklos. It is not

:12:03.:12:07.

much of a difference between first and 10th, 1.17 seconds, so there is

:12:08.:12:16.

a chance for them to alter the top ten. Medal may be out of the

:12:17.:12:23.

question. Miklos has done well, exceptionally well. The hon Mary and

:12:24.:12:27.

has skied into sixth position and as far as she is concerned, that is as

:12:28.:12:34.

good as a gold. What a great run. She is delighted with that. This was

:12:35.:12:40.

the stivoting. She got thrown around, she has a hand in the snow,

:12:41.:12:45.

but she really went through it and let the skis run. That will give

:12:46.:12:50.

encouragement to the later starters, including number 35, Great

:12:51.:12:55.

Britain's Chemmy Alcott. What a run from Miklos. Sturgis dead the next

:12:56.:13:08.

to go -- Sejersted the next to go the Norway, world junior champion in

:13:09.:13:11.

2011. Some solid results this season, including a fifth place in

:13:12.:13:24.

Val d'Isere. Starting late today. We have seen it is possible for some of

:13:25.:13:27.

the lower starters to make a difference, let's see if Sejersted

:13:28.:13:32.

can. She is going beautifully, a tenth of a second in front. A

:13:33.:13:37.

cracking start. What an aggressive side. The changes on those first few

:13:38.:13:44.

gates were so quick, going 60 mph. And she is up again. This is one of

:13:45.:13:48.

the best runs we have ever seen from this young woman. 800s -- eight

:13:49.:14:03.

hundredths behind. She could get in amongst the medals. The top three

:14:04.:14:09.

are separated by exactly one tenth of a second. The course is still

:14:10.:14:16.

running quickly as Sejersted stands tall and loses a fraction of her

:14:17.:14:22.

time. The gold-medal position is 1:41.57. She is sixth. Sejersted,

:14:23.:14:27.

once again, putting down a run to remember. Another cracking run. The

:14:28.:14:43.

later starters having an impact on the overall running here. See this

:14:44.:14:52.

hill, I it just pulls you down to the left. It is so steep. Ilka

:14:53.:15:14.

Stuhec is next to go for Slovenia. Just a little bit of the ideal run.

:15:15.:15:21.

It just goes to show, the last two girls skiing into sixth position.

:15:22.:15:28.

This course is holding up brilliantly. A little mistake at the

:15:29.:15:43.

top has cost her. She will be one second behind at the next split, I

:15:44.:15:49.

would imagine. We saw Marcus Maher coming down with his bucket of salt.

:15:50.:15:54.

It may have made a difference and helped the course to stay firm for

:15:55.:15:58.

the later starters. We have certainly seen some shock results.

:15:59.:16:03.

They are certainly using the salt on the bottom section. It is holding up

:16:04.:16:08.

much better than we thought it would do. The Slovenian supporters already

:16:09.:16:16.

celebrating Tina Maze's provisional gold medal position, sharing it with

:16:17.:16:23.

Dominique Gisin. And Ilka Stuhec is ten. Top ten again.

:16:24.:16:36.

Numbers 25, 26 and 27 all making the top ten. This next Canadian racer, a

:16:37.:16:48.

lovely story. Injured itself in 2009. Was kicked off the team. It

:16:49.:16:53.

spurred her run to do better things. Her goal was to make it to Sochi.

:16:54.:17:11.

And here she is. Her name is Larisa Yurkiw. She comes from a place in

:17:12.:17:26.

Winnipeg were racers are trained and bread. Injuries have hampered

:17:27.:17:39.

progress. Just of the ideal line. If you are off that line and you go

:17:40.:17:44.

into the uphill section, you cannot claw it back. That is a real shame.

:17:45.:17:48.

I would love to have seen her do something special. There is nothing

:17:49.:17:52.

better than somebody who funds their own programme and works so hard. We

:17:53.:18:02.

have Nadia Fanchini starting at number 30. She is an exciting, at

:18:03.:18:07.

times explosive racer. She could do some damage. She did do some damage

:18:08.:18:15.

to the top positions or she could do some damage to herself. She quite

:18:16.:18:20.

often crashes, Nadia Fanchini. She will give it everything today,

:18:21.:18:35.

starting at number 30. Chemmy Alcott starts at number 35. There are the

:18:36.:18:39.

medallists the way things stand at the moment. Two gold medallists and

:18:40.:18:45.

a bronze medallist as the gold medallists embrace. Tina Maze with

:18:46.:18:55.

exactly the same time as Dominique Gisin. This is Klara Krizova of the

:18:56.:19:10.

Czech Republic. Starting late in the day at number 29. That was not the

:19:11.:19:16.

ideal start. She pumped the hands to get out of the start gate, looked

:19:17.:19:20.

confident and let the outside ski drift away. I don't think she will

:19:21.:19:32.

be fast into the first split. Not too bad. Quick changes here. This is

:19:33.:19:38.

the important gate. A little bit along on the AIDS. Very quickly gets

:19:39.:19:42.

down into the aerodynamic tog. Has to get the legs pumping stopped --.

:19:43.:20:02.

So important to get the line right on the final section. A little bit

:20:03.:20:13.

open at the end. A few little bombs forming there but they are not

:20:14.:20:16.

really playing havoc. The last couple of gates Klara Stover --

:20:17.:20:28.

Klara Krizova over. 20th position. Nadia Fanchini, the unpredictable

:20:29.:20:38.

Italian, will be next. There is one of our leaders on the phone. I

:20:39.:20:42.

wonder if she is speaking to her mum. It looks like a mum face!

:20:43.:20:50.

Lovely scenes. Great to see. So much effort has gone into it. She can

:20:51.:20:58.

hardly talk. , lovely. It is what every athlete dreams of. Next is

:20:59.:21:07.

Nadia Fanchini of Italy. What can she do today? She has a bit of a

:21:08.:21:13.

history in the big races. Silver in the world championship downhill in

:21:14.:21:23.

2013. She took bronze in the world championship. You know that she will

:21:24.:21:26.

throw everything at this hill. This is a good-looking start. A 10th of a

:21:27.:21:33.

second behind. We are on the edge of our seats. These are great turns.

:21:34.:21:42.

She has got to stay low. A great top section. Is looking good Fernandinho

:21:43.:21:53.

French Uni. Not looking so good now. She lost some speed in the forest.

:21:54.:22:00.

It is not fast enough to trouble the medallists at this stage. May be the

:22:01.:22:05.

skis not running as quick as she would like. Downhill is all about

:22:06.:22:12.

the skills and the gliding part. -- skis. Nadia Fanchini is unable to

:22:13.:22:29.

make an impact. They really are tightly bunched, and they? What a

:22:30.:22:34.

tight race today. It was the same for the men. Lara Gut struggling to

:22:35.:22:40.

force a smile in the bronze medal position. The gold shade between

:22:41.:22:53.

Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin. What a result Edit Miklos. Great skiing

:22:54.:23:05.

today. Chemmy Alcott's turn is approaching fast. 35 is her start

:23:06.:23:11.

number. We have a couple of Russians to go. Then Alexandra Coletti from

:23:12.:23:20.

Monaco and Zara Hector from Sweden. Chemmy Alcott likes the course. She

:23:21.:23:26.

has done four runs on it. She has got faster release time. Now she is

:23:27.:23:30.

ready to go into the Olympic Games, put the injuries behind her and put

:23:31.:23:35.

her foot down. Wonderful scenes between the gold medallists. Tina

:23:36.:23:47.

Maze with her mum. What a time to appoint a new coach. Tears of joy

:23:48.:23:54.

for Dominique Gisin. Part of a ski racing family. Her brother, Mark, is

:23:55.:23:59.

one of the Swiss team members in slalom. Her sister racers slalom for

:24:00.:24:04.

the Swiss team as well. A nervous wait at the top for Maria the Dara

:24:05.:24:14.

of, next to go for Russia. -- Maria Bedareva. They know that some of the

:24:15.:24:30.

later starters have made an impact, with some of them breaking the top

:24:31.:24:35.

ten. They will hope for something similar from Maria Bedareva. The

:24:36.:24:45.

first of the two Russians on her way. What a great feeling it is, not

:24:46.:24:52.

that I would know, unfortunately, a great feeling for these athletes to

:24:53.:24:56.

ski on home soil. The crowd going crazy. It is such a joy to race in

:24:57.:25:07.

front of your home crowd. Arms flailing, trying to keep the snow

:25:08.:25:12.

contact. The anticipation mounting at the bottom of the course. Elena

:25:13.:25:19.

Yakovishina, who goes next, maybe the better of the two. She is

:25:20.:25:22.

getting thrown around, unfortunately. Losing the grip on

:25:23.:25:27.

the outside ski. Not looking that comfortable. She has got to push

:25:28.:25:37.

hard. She will enjoy the final section. She is in the gliding

:25:38.:25:48.

section. It is important to get a good line here. We have seen a few

:25:49.:25:57.

of them lose time on this glide. She is drifting further from the target

:25:58.:26:05.

time. Comes into the final section. She nearly got an edge. Did well to

:26:06.:26:11.

stay on her feet. No speed at all but the crowd are going wild and

:26:12.:26:15.

cheering on as he reaches the finish. The Russian supporters

:26:16.:26:20.

rising at the foot of the hill as Maria Bedareva comes over the last

:26:21.:26:24.

roller and finishes the Olympic downhill. 3.72 seconds slower than

:26:25.:26:32.

the joint leaders, Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin. Happy to have raced

:26:33.:26:37.

and happy to have made it down safely. She really opened up over

:26:38.:26:52.

this job. -- jump. The second Russian is Elena Yakovishina. She

:26:53.:26:58.

raced in the super combined and went OK in the downhill stage. Let's see

:26:59.:27:05.

how she does here. The first split, 1:12.03. She is 2.29 seconds down.

:27:06.:27:16.

Not seeing the whole of the run of the later starters. They are

:27:17.:27:19.

shortening the starter intervals now. She looks a little bit

:27:20.:27:26.

tentative. Again the crowd starts to go mad. A good crowd out today for

:27:27.:27:34.

this Wednesday Olympic downhill. Beautiful conditions. What a gate of

:27:35.:27:37.

the ad watching ski racing in the mountains. Elena Yakovishina is 26.

:27:38.:27:47.

Slightly better than her compatriot. I think it will be interesting in a

:27:48.:27:52.

few years, with this fabulous resort the Russians have now, I think they

:27:53.:27:55.

could produce some really top ski racers. Next to go will be Alexandra

:27:56.:28:04.

Coletti from Monaco, then Sara Hector from Sweden and 35 will

:28:05.:28:13.

follow. That is Chemmy Alcott. From Monaco, Alexandra Coletti. She has

:28:14.:28:19.

been racing for quite a while. One of the oldest racers on the tour. We

:28:20.:28:26.

will see her out of the start and we will find her further down the hill.

:28:27.:28:32.

From that clip that we saw there, you see how quickly they pick up

:28:33.:28:38.

speed. The start gate, you look like you are just falling off a

:28:39.:28:48.

precipice. Not a bad first section. Pushing hard. She is in trouble. She

:28:49.:28:56.

slides out of contention. She has lost her ski. She jams into the

:28:57.:29:06.

safety net. I don't think she has come away unscathed. I think this

:29:07.:29:09.

may be trouble for Alexandra Coletti. I can hear some piercing

:29:10.:29:14.

screams. I think she may have hurt herself. That is nasty. You can see

:29:15.:29:22.

how steep it is to the left. She literally went falling off to the

:29:23.:29:26.

left very sharply and into the nets. That does not sound good. Oh,

:29:27.:29:33.

goodness me. The medics are there and they are tending to Alexandra

:29:34.:29:36.

Coletti. Clearly in distress. That is a happier scene from Tina

:29:37.:29:55.

Maze. Bearing in mind the position of Coletti's fall, I don't know if

:29:56.:30:02.

the helicopter will be required to evacuate her from there. We will try

:30:03.:30:05.

and get an update from the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, there is a

:30:06.:30:11.

nervous wait for Sara Hector, who starts next and for Chemmy Alcott,

:30:12.:30:17.

who is behind her in the queue. I think we just heard five minutes.

:30:18.:30:22.

Which is very, very difficult for the athletes now, because they know

:30:23.:30:27.

it has been a bad crash. They have mentally rehearsed these sorts of

:30:28.:30:30.

situations many times but they have to back off now, they have to relax

:30:31.:30:38.

and go to almost peaceful place that every athlete has when they go to --

:30:39.:30:46.

where they go to win a situation like this arises, you just try to

:30:47.:30:52.

relax. So we have a hold while Alexandra Colletti is evacuated. It

:30:53.:30:55.

looks like they will use the sledge to take her off the hill.

:30:56.:30:58.

We will go back to Hazel. HAZEL IRVINE: You never, ever like

:30:59.:31:06.

to see that in ski racing and ten years on Ski Sunday with Matt and

:31:07.:31:10.

the boys, it was always a horrible experience watching people being

:31:11.:31:14.

evacuated from the mountains. We will go back, obviously, to see

:31:15.:31:18.

Chemmy Alcott's run shortly, but we will be talking very soon about the

:31:19.:31:23.

pairs figure skating event, and that will be taking place later this

:31:24.:31:29.

evening. The Russians, all 130 million of them, bonkers about this,

:31:30.:31:33.

they love this event, and have good reason to do so, because they have

:31:34.:31:37.

an absolute stellar history in it. Let's show you why in the company of

:31:38.:31:44.

one of their greatest legends of the sport.

:31:45.:31:52.

That was a performance of genuine quality. Certainly without doubt the

:31:53.:32:05.

best programme we have seen in the championship. Superb performance

:32:06.:32:09.

from the Russians. A standing ovation and rightly so. The title is

:32:10.:32:21.

going to Russia. That was brilliant, in the true style of

:32:22.:32:28.

Soviet pairs skating. I think we will be the best in figure skating.

:32:29.:32:36.

It is a tradition. Interpretation was brilliant, in perfect unison. It

:32:37.:32:42.

is not like sport, it is like a style of life. They have won the

:32:43.:32:51.

gold medal in the pairs skating championship.

:32:52.:32:56.

We have a very good school not only for skaters but for coaches. We have

:32:57.:33:01.

a school from Saint Petersburg, Moscow, every city has a different

:33:02.:33:08.

school for skating. All the world loves a great champion, and this

:33:09.:33:14.

crowd is giving a champion's reception to Irina Rodnina. I

:33:15.:33:25.

remember getting the gold medals. Ten times world champions, 11 times

:33:26.:33:30.

European champions and now Irina Rodnina is a triple Olympic gold

:33:31.:33:42.

medallist. That was very well done. The crowd in the building are giving

:33:43.:33:46.

them a standing ovation and well they deserve it. A very neat

:33:47.:33:54.

combination, look how the timing is so perfect. When I was young, I

:33:55.:34:10.

listened on the radio station. Then we would go on the rink and enjoy

:34:11.:34:16.

figure skating. Everything was beautifully together. They are in a

:34:17.:34:26.

class of their own for me. And it won't come much better than that. In

:34:27.:34:34.

Turin, when we had three gold medals, I don't remember another

:34:35.:34:37.

country that had three gold medals in figure skating. Quite delightful,

:34:38.:34:45.

a superb performance. SUE BARKER: They have dominated

:34:46.:34:51.

this, from 1964 through two 2006, winning gold medals in the pairs and

:34:52.:34:54.

it looks destined to come back to Russia again. I think we will be the

:34:55.:35:02.

best in pairs skating, we have all of this tradition.

:35:03.:35:12.

Yes, I spoke to Irina Rodnina a few months ago in Moscow about the pairs

:35:13.:35:17.

competition and, of course, she then went on to light the Olympic

:35:18.:35:25.

Cauldron herself. So there it is burning brightly behind us. But we

:35:26.:35:28.

are going back to the women's downhill. We will be discussing more

:35:29.:35:34.

about the figure skating, Robin Cousins is on his way to discuss

:35:35.:35:38.

that, but we can go back to events there. Matt, what is the latest?

:35:39.:35:44.

The latest is that Alexandra Colletti has been evacuated from the

:35:45.:35:50.

course via the sledge, the helicopter wasn't required. We will

:35:51.:35:54.

try to bring you an update at some point, probably via the website, as

:35:55.:35:58.

to her condition. I think we are just a few seconds away from the

:35:59.:36:03.

restart of the race. Next to go will be Sara Hector from Sweden, number

:36:04.:36:07.

34. She will be followed by Chemmy Alcott. I wonder if the break might

:36:08.:36:13.

have helped the course. I have seen workers come down, I have seen some

:36:14.:36:20.

more salt being spread onto the top part of the surface to firm it up a

:36:21.:36:32.

bit. These are the scenes at the foot of the course. The gold medal

:36:33.:36:37.

has been shared so far. Those are the scenes further up, with

:36:38.:36:44.

Alexandra Colletti from Monaco being stretchered off. It could be that

:36:45.:36:48.

the helicopter will pick her up. In fact, I can hear the chopper

:36:49.:36:52.

arriving to complete the evacuation, so obviously the fall

:36:53.:36:56.

didn't happen in a place where the helicopter was able to arrive so

:36:57.:36:59.

they had to move her away to a safe point. So, the gold-medal is shared

:37:00.:37:09.

at the moment between Tina Maze of Slovenia, who came down number 21,

:37:10.:37:14.

and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland, who started number eight. Lara Gut

:37:15.:37:18.

is the other medallist, she has the bronze-medal position from bib

:37:19.:37:21.

number 18. I think she is saying, " over the

:37:22.:37:50.

jump and bam, bam!". You speak Swedish as well? I'm just guessing.

:37:51.:37:59.

You did train with the Finns for awhile. That is a tricky language, I

:38:00.:38:06.

can do one to ten. There are differences, she was lapping with

:38:07.:38:12.

her coaches wire Chemmy was being very quiet -- she was laughing with

:38:13.:38:15.

her coaches while Chemmy was being very quiet. So this is Tina Maze in

:38:16.:38:22.

the blue, and Lara Gut in the red. The bronze medal at the moment for

:38:23.:38:28.

Lara Gut, gold-medal for Maze, and there is next to nothing between

:38:29.:38:33.

them. A tenth of a second separating the top three, and that was the same

:38:34.:38:39.

for the men's downhill. It is not even a metre as they crossed the

:38:40.:38:40.

line. There is nothing in it at all. So, it looks as if we are ready to

:38:41.:38:57.

resume the Olympic women's downhill. Sara Hector has at last been called

:38:58.:39:04.

forward, following a lengthy delay after the crash to Alexandra

:39:05.:39:13.

Colletti of Monica so one made until the restart and we will probably see

:39:14.:39:18.

her banging her feet and doing some knee bends. They are trying to stop

:39:19.:39:26.

that lactic acid building up in the legs, trying to keep it all moving

:39:27.:39:30.

through the system. But the last thing you want is for it to pool in

:39:31.:39:41.

your legs and then for them to stiffen up. A last look at what lies

:39:42.:39:47.

ahead. We have 42 in total to race, few of the outsiders still waiting

:39:48.:39:50.

for the chance to race the downhill. For most of them, the first time.

:39:51.:39:54.

Chemmy Alcott is racing in her fourth. Sara Hector is the first to

:39:55.:40:03.

go after the injury delay. She get the ten -- gets the ten second

:40:04.:40:09.

count. When she has a five second count, she can go at any time. And

:40:10.:40:10.

she is away. Starter number 34. Good turns in the top section, no

:40:11.:40:24.

problems so far. Carries the speed as she comes into the slight

:40:25.:40:27.

compression, it goes uphill very slightly, falls away to the right

:40:28.:40:33.

and then you have a big jump. The first really tricky section. Dives

:40:34.:40:40.

down. It is smooth, but not aggressive. It shows in the time.

:40:41.:40:48.

The next script for Tina Maze, whose name is showing their, but we have

:40:49.:40:54.

to keep reminding ourselves that the gold medal has been split so far

:40:55.:40:55.

between Maze and Gisin. Comes up towards Tunnel Jump. We can

:40:56.:41:14.

actually hear the helicopter right now, so they must just be taking

:41:15.:41:21.

off. Yes, Alexandra Colletti on her way to the medical centre. Sara

:41:22.:41:26.

Hector's time is a little distance now from the best of the day so far.

:41:27.:41:36.

Just a little bit of a lukewarm run to me, not pushing quite as hard as

:41:37.:41:40.

she could have done. Lacking the commitment.

:41:41.:41:47.

So she has made it down, which means that Chemmy Alcott will not be

:41:48.:41:55.

forced to wait any longer. And Sara Hector is 24th for the moment. So,

:41:56.:42:02.

next to go, for Great Britain, in her fourth Olympic Winter Games,

:42:03.:42:03.

Chemmy Alcott. Chemmy Alcott in the start for Great

:42:04.:42:26.

Britain. The final couple of words encouragement. Pushing out of the

:42:27.:42:33.

gate and tackling the Olympic downhill in 2014. One of only two

:42:34.:42:37.

British representatives in the Alpine programme, the other being

:42:38.:42:43.

the slalom skier David Ryding. She has pushed everything, all of the

:42:44.:42:47.

injuries out of her mind. A little bit sideways, a bit of snow spraying

:42:48.:42:52.

up but it wasn't a bad split. She has to make a proper move over the

:42:53.:42:57.

last jump. Carrying good speed. Into the last section. In her final

:42:58.:43:03.

Olympic downhill, she won't be pushing for a medal, but after all

:43:04.:43:07.

the injuries she has suffered, it is great to see her back on the hill.

:43:08.:43:13.

She has taken 19th position. Her best Olympic result was in 2006,

:43:14.:43:19.

when she took 11th. She is happy to have raced, happy to have made the

:43:20.:43:24.

top 20 and realistically, her best chance is to come in the super G. I

:43:25.:43:30.

take my hat off to this girl. She has come through so much and to see

:43:31.:43:36.

her throw herself then the downhill, well done. Karolina Chrapek check

:43:37.:43:53.

from Poland is down, number 36. A long way off the pace as we pick her

:43:54.:43:58.

up, near the final section of the course, coming along the flat very

:43:59.:44:03.

upright. A little tentative but looking to finish her first Olympic

:44:04.:44:07.

Games. It has been an eventful women's downhill in many ways, more

:44:08.:44:13.

dramatic than the men's with all of the crashes and falls and drama of

:44:14.:44:17.

the shared gold between Maze and Gisin. Lara Gut looking a little

:44:18.:44:24.

nonplussed with her third position. But that is the way it stands. In

:44:25.:44:36.

Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin will share the goal. The bronze goes to

:44:37.:44:42.

Lara Gut. The first time in Olympic history

:44:43.:44:47.

that we have had two gold medals in the same event. Tina Maze, the first

:44:48.:44:53.

Slovenian ever to strike gold for her country. Dominique Gisin, the

:44:54.:44:59.

28-year-old, the first for 30 years to win this event for the Swiss.

:45:00.:45:06.

They will be absolutely delighted. Very eventful race indeed.

:45:07.:45:09.

Congratulations to Chemmy Alcott as well. Looking like a top 20 finish

:45:10.:45:17.

in her fourth Olympic downhill. A fantastic skier, a great ambassador.

:45:18.:45:21.

And boy, this girl has got, doesn't she? Messier from Dominique Gisin.

:45:22.:45:31.

You had a long wait and when Tina came down did you think you had

:45:32.:45:39.

lasted? I didn't want to look. And then I thought zero is good! Yes,

:45:40.:45:46.

crazy. It was a lot of nerves, a lot of sweat, a lot of emotions. Every

:45:47.:45:51.

two minutes something else. It was lonely. It is incredible. What can I

:45:52.:46:02.

say? It is crazy. You looking forward to sharing the podium with

:46:03.:46:07.

Tina? It is a big honour to share it with her. She is an amazing woman.

:46:08.:46:12.

She is an amazing athlete. I love skiing. This is all some. Brilliant.

:46:13.:46:18.

Congratulations. You started quite early. Where the course conditions

:46:19.:46:25.

good when you skied? It was really good. It was not as icy as in the

:46:26.:46:29.

training runs. It was really fast. I just tried to charge as fast as I

:46:30.:46:41.

could. Thank you. Two downhill wins. Congratulations to Dominique

:46:42.:46:48.

Gisin and Tina Maze. It is the pairs in the figure skating. It is the

:46:49.:46:53.

climax of the event. Who else to share that with both Robin Cousins?

:46:54.:46:58.

We read in the feature a little earlier. It did underline the

:46:59.:47:03.

pedigree of skaters the Russians have produced and the Soviets before

:47:04.:47:11.

that. 12 gold medals. They lost it in 2010. They wanted back? They do

:47:12.:47:17.

want it back. And badly on home turf. Sport for them is education.

:47:18.:47:29.

In 1980, the pairs were the first event. Everybody knew. It was

:47:30.:47:38.

thrilling. We were competitive. She once said to me that sport was

:47:39.:47:44.

education. We educate our sport and our skaters. You teach it properly.

:47:45.:47:50.

If you don't do it properly, you don't do it at all. That is their

:47:51.:47:55.

pedigree. Somebody like her, she knows what she's talking about. The

:47:56.:47:59.

history of pairs event is fascinating. How was it changed

:48:00.:48:15.

after the 1960s? After Irina had won an Olympic gold medal, she split

:48:16.:48:23.

from her partner. Irina was looking for a new partner. They took it from

:48:24.:48:29.

the classical dance point of view into the more athletic stance. They

:48:30.:48:33.

were creating well-known moves and tricks. They made it more athletic.

:48:34.:48:38.

It was the power and the speed. This is no athleticism with the beauty of

:48:39.:48:42.

figure skating that we know from the Russians. It did change the course

:48:43.:48:53.

of pairs skating. In 2002, Salt Lake City, and that very controversial

:48:54.:49:00.

joint goals given to the Russians and to the Canadians. That

:49:01.:49:04.

effectively, that moment was a massive scandal first skating? It

:49:05.:49:10.

was a massive scandal. That aside, you had this traditional Russian

:49:11.:49:13.

style versus the North Americans, who had taken that basic Russian

:49:14.:49:17.

style and twisted it and made it their own. It was two versions of

:49:18.:49:21.

the same thing. Very different versions. You are in one camp or the

:49:22.:49:25.

other. That night they were both different. The IOC gave them the

:49:26.:49:33.

gold medal. The Chinese took over in Vancouver. Going back 30 years, the

:49:34.:49:42.

Chinese skater would come to practice in my day and take the

:49:43.:49:49.

Russians. He was the coach of the Chinese in Vancouver when they won

:49:50.:49:53.

the gold. He is here now with his team. The Chinese silver medallists

:49:54.:50:00.

are also here. The Russians wanted badly. We saw in the team event that

:50:01.:50:03.

they are performing under pressure in a way that nobody would have

:50:04.:50:08.

expected. The Russians of the podium in Vancouver. They got to peers in

:50:09.:50:15.

this event. -- they have got two pairs in this event that could do

:50:16.:50:18.

the business. After the short programme last night, we will see

:50:19.:50:21.

it. Here is what happened in that short programme.

:50:22.:50:35.

Stacey Kemp and David King. Second appearance on the eyes here in

:50:36.:50:42.

Sochi. Didn't start well in the short programme in the team event.

:50:43.:50:48.

They finished 10th and last in that part of the competition. They have

:50:49.:50:53.

to put that behind them. They have had some super results over the

:50:54.:50:56.

years. They were sixth in the European Championships. 13th at the

:50:57.:51:02.

world Championships. Here they are in the Olympic Games again. For

:51:03.:51:03.

Britain, Stacey Kent and David King. A little tight on the landing. I

:51:04.:51:31.

think they made the rotation. No triple jumps. They do have the

:51:32.:51:52.

double axels. And that is what they want to make happen now. David made

:51:53.:52:04.

-- he will be downgraded for a half turned cheat on that landing. --

:52:05.:52:08.

have a turn. Well, that must have felt like a

:52:09.:54:02.

very long two minutes, 45 seconds for David and Stacey. A number of

:54:03.:54:06.

errors. They seemed to lose some speed towards the end. That is where

:54:07.:54:11.

the mistakes came in. You can tell from their reaction they are not

:54:12.:54:15.

happy. No. They will not be very pleased. I could see the attention

:54:16.:54:20.

from Stacey going in at the very beginning. It was tight on the exit,

:54:21.:54:26.

the triple twist. It is building towards that triple flip. You just

:54:27.:54:33.

don't know if there is is an injury or something. I have seen them skate

:54:34.:54:37.

a lot better than that in the past. Very disappointing. A long way below

:54:38.:54:41.

this season's best. I think they know that that is not going to

:54:42.:54:47.

happen. They are not going to be through to the free programme. Last

:54:48.:54:52.

place at the moment. Not what they came here for. Sad to see.

:54:53.:55:03.

Here they come. They secured the goal for Russia before the free

:55:04.:55:09.

dance had even taken place. They won the silver medal at the recent

:55:10.:55:21.

European Championships. Will it be error free today for the Russians?

:55:22.:55:28.

Taking their time settling. The crowd so excited. They have to be in

:55:29.:55:31.

the right frame of mind. They are ready.

:55:32.:55:48.

Music: "Surrender" by Jesse Cook they open with the triple twist.

:55:49.:55:58.

Beautiful. Exquisite. Absolutely perfect in

:55:59.:56:26.

unison. The throw is a triple flip. And she has nailed it.

:56:27.:57:18.

Look at the change of direction in the combination spin.

:57:19.:58:27.

Oh, yes! The Russian skaters rise to the occasion again. This crowd is

:58:28.:58:37.

knowledgeable about skating and expect so much. These two could not

:58:38.:58:42.

have done more. Absolutely loved the choreography, I loved the music.

:58:43.:58:49.

Great split. Makes the rotation. Catches her easily after the

:58:50.:58:53.

rotation but before she lands. Look at his line. Look at that. Glorious.

:58:54.:59:00.

The timing is immaculate. Thrilling. Absolutely thrilling. Surely they

:59:01.:59:08.

are the new leaders? Yes, by a long way. Almost five points. A new

:59:09.:59:14.

season's best. They are going to be in the medal hunt.

:59:15.:59:23.

Next onto the ice the four-time world champions. They decided to

:59:24.:59:34.

convert their very popular programme to the new short programme.

:59:35.:59:44.

Savchenko and Robin sulkily from Germany.

:59:45.:59:54.

They have chosen to open this new version of the show with the triple

:59:55.:00:06.

flip. Lovely through the triple twist.

:00:07.:00:32.

Third jump element, side-by-side triple toe loops. Yes.

:00:33.:02:26.

A huge response from the crowd in Sochi, a brave decision and it has

:02:27.:02:37.

proved to be right. Not only entertaining, but

:02:38.:02:41.

beautifully presented. All of the difficult elements were there, it

:02:42.:02:46.

was a programme that had it all. Throw flip, huge, absolutely huge,

:02:47.:02:59.

and she is very soft on the landing. Easy catch before she comes down out

:03:00.:03:05.

of the triple twist. The moment of truth with the marks. 79 points 64.

:03:06.:03:17.

Not great smiles from the Germans. -- 79. 64. It puts them in first

:03:18.:03:24.

place. While all of the attention was focused on Plushenko returning

:03:25.:03:28.

in a short programme on Thursday, it was these two who stole the show,

:03:29.:03:31.

winning the ten nation short programme competition by more than

:03:32.:03:35.

ten points. It was not only flawless, it was breathtakingly

:03:36.:03:38.

beautiful, and it is one of the great short programmes ever impairs

:03:39.:03:47.

baking. -- in pairs skating. Will it be flawless tonight? The world

:03:48.:03:54.

champions from Russia Volosozhar and Trankov in the masquerade waltz.

:03:55.:04:11.

MUSIC: "Masquerade Waltz" by Aram Khatchaturian

:04:12.:04:22.

Their first element, the triple twist. Easy and light.

:04:23.:04:59.

Difficult variation of positions, reversing the spin to the right.

:05:00.:06:48.

Oh, yes! You feel the tingles, the crowd are on their feet. That was

:06:49.:06:57.

absolutely magnificent. They have established a magical partnership on

:06:58.:07:02.

the ice over the past few years and that was outstanding. I can finally

:07:03.:07:07.

breathe out now! Because halfway through, when the jump elements are

:07:08.:07:13.

done, you think you can relax a little bit, he was playing with the

:07:14.:07:16.

crowd, playing with the camera a little bit, and you take that deep

:07:17.:07:21.

breath, but it is that hair on the back of the next moment, it is

:07:22.:07:24.

glorious. The second half, to me, was fantastic. This was the throw,

:07:25.:07:31.

look at the height on the twist. Easily down, nice and soft on the

:07:32.:07:34.

landing, beautiful extension from them both. The arms even match on

:07:35.:07:41.

the entrance of the three turn, on the triple toe loops. Perfect

:07:42.:07:50.

unison. I think there is going to be another big cheer when the crowd

:07:51.:07:59.

sees these set of marks. 84.17. That is almost five points ahead of the

:08:00.:08:02.

Germans. The gold-medal is theirs for the taking.

:08:03.:08:06.

She is 33, he is 34. Silver medallists at the last Olympics.

:08:07.:08:15.

They dream of being on the podium once again and they are ready, the

:08:16.:08:20.

two-time world champions from China, Qing Pang and Jian Tong.

:08:21.:08:33.

MUSIC: "Lady Caliph" by Ennio Morricone

:08:34.:08:53.

she was slightly under rotated on that.

:08:54.:09:23.

Not so much the twist, that is easy. How far will the trademark loop fly

:09:24.:09:29.

today? Gorgeous as always. There is a

:09:30.:11:25.

wonderful connection between the two of them and they always produce a

:11:26.:11:28.

performance that oozes class. I love watching them.

:11:29.:11:32.

Already slightly off in the sink in the preparation. She misses on the

:11:33.:11:43.

take-off, just about a quarter, so they may get the credit for it. And

:11:44.:11:48.

when you watch the lift position, the leg could be bent or straight,

:11:49.:11:52.

pick a position. Better in the second half. 73.30, still a great

:11:53.:12:03.

score, it has them in fourth place. That is the result as it stands at

:12:04.:12:07.

the moment, with Volosozhar and Trankov the leaders at the moment.

:12:08.:12:12.

But a big score difference between those top two. Sadly, before that

:12:13.:12:17.

miss out include Britain's Stacey Kemp and David King, a number of

:12:18.:12:21.

errors in their short programme, finishing in a disappointing 19th

:12:22.:12:24.

place. HAZEL IRVINE: Robin certainly

:12:25.:12:29.

enjoyed that. I think we all did. One sober and Trankov scoring a

:12:30.:12:32.

world record -- le is that enough, or will it be

:12:33.:12:44.

overturned? They won't worry about the points, they will worry about

:12:45.:12:49.

the performance. They know what they need to do to make that gold medal.

:12:50.:12:53.

The Germans were disappointed, not in the marks that the Russians got,

:12:54.:12:56.

but they were hoping to be in the 80s, to be closer. They can do it

:12:57.:13:00.

but I have a feeling that the Russians are going to have to make a

:13:01.:13:04.

mistake and the Germans have to be perfect to win, but it will be an

:13:05.:13:08.

interesting tussle. You have the Chinese in fourth, the Canadians in

:13:09.:13:11.

fifth, they have given a great performance as well, so I think we

:13:12.:13:15.

have seen the medallists, but it is just in what order. When you think

:13:16.:13:21.

about the feeling you have got when you sit in that incredible Ice

:13:22.:13:26.

Palace. Do you think the atmosphere and the belief in the skaters is

:13:27.:13:30.

transferring to the Russians, because it seemed to transferred to

:13:31.:13:37.

the eyes? They have all felt support and not pressure, and it has been

:13:38.:13:44.

interesting. 2012, our athletes felt incredible pressure and you kept

:13:45.:13:47.

saying, as an ambassador, it is great as people are pressurising

:13:48.:13:51.

you, use it a support mechanism. These guys are going out as if it is

:13:52.:13:57.

a day in the park, a practice session. We have seen the veterans

:13:58.:14:01.

at the sport, then look at a 15-year-old, not fazed or overawed

:14:02.:14:06.

by the occasion. The Russians have come through in a way the no one

:14:07.:14:13.

expected. And the team, how big a success was that? Some people have

:14:14.:14:17.

said it should be at the end of the individual programmes, rather than

:14:18.:14:22.

the start. Where do you stand? I love the fact that it has started

:14:23.:14:26.

the event. I think they should start after the opening ceremony, and then

:14:27.:14:29.

there will be a couple of days between the team event and the main

:14:30.:14:33.

championships. It needs some work and I was one of those who wasn't

:14:34.:14:37.

sure but I am a bit of a convert, and I think a few of us were

:14:38.:14:45.

thinking it needs to be sorted from a technical point of view and a

:14:46.:14:48.

judging point of view. The free programme needs to count for more

:14:49.:14:51.

than the short programme, but as a medal event, very successful. It was

:14:52.:14:54.

enjoyable to see everybody go up onto the podium. Together as a team.

:14:55.:14:58.

We are not used to seeing the camaraderie with the skaters in our

:14:59.:15:03.

event. We see it on a lot of the slope and ski sports, but we tend to

:15:04.:15:08.

be segregated. It is nice to see a team come together as one unit. What

:15:09.:15:13.

was great to see the other night was the preshow of the opening ceremony.

:15:14.:15:20.

It featured, wait for this, the Russian Interior Ministry police

:15:21.:15:28.

force. They gave a version of Daft Punk's Get Lucky. It has been a

:15:29.:15:32.

massive hit here, but we thought you might enjoy this. Guaranteed to

:15:33.:15:42.

cheer up your morning. # We are up all night to get lucky.

:15:43.:15:48.

# We are up all night to get lucky. # We have come too far to give up

:15:49.:15:57.

who we are. # We're up all night to get lucky.

:15:58.:16:10.

# Shoes up all night for the sun. # I am up all night to get some.

:16:11.:16:19.

# I am up all night to get lucky. # We are up all night for good fun.

:16:20.:16:26.

# We are up all night to get lucky. # We are up all night to get lucky.

:16:27.:16:31.

# We are up all night to get lucky. Isn't that just fantastic? I think

:16:32.:16:53.

we are starting a campaign. What do we want? Get them in the closing

:16:54.:17:00.

ceremony, on the main show. It might not be too long before the ice

:17:01.:17:03.

skaters can actually dance and perform to vocal music. As of next

:17:04.:17:09.

season it goes across all the disciplines. You could see somebody

:17:10.:17:12.

getting lucky on a podium in the future to that version, you never

:17:13.:17:17.

know. The free programme of the players starts at 4pm on the red

:17:18.:17:21.

button. The top eight pairs will start on the ice from eight to 20 on

:17:22.:17:28.

BBC Two. Thank you very much, always great to see you -- from 20 past

:17:29.:17:34.

eight. We are going to stay on the ice but this time we are talking ice

:17:35.:17:39.

hockey. It is a big day in ice hockey because the men's competition

:17:40.:17:43.

starts later. In the daylight hours it will be happening in the Shayba

:17:44.:17:49.

Arena, that means ice hockey puck in Russian. Let's examine what is going

:17:50.:17:55.

on in the women's event, two crucial matches will decide the look of

:17:56.:17:59.

group a and that will shape the semifinals. It is the Americans

:18:00.:18:05.

against the Canadians, they are playing for first and second place.

:18:06.:18:10.

It is a repeat of the Vancouver final. Both of the teams will go

:18:11.:18:19.

through to the quarterfinals but the winner will potentially the easier

:18:20.:18:24.

quarter final opponent from group B. Shall we say you the key moments so

:18:25.:18:26.

far? COMMENTATORS: Switzerland are

:18:27.:18:41.

bending and not buckling under the strain. Deflection, and a goal at! A

:18:42.:18:51.

lovely touch. The captain, the defenceman, linking up with her

:18:52.:18:56.

colic to get just enough of a stick on it. The Swiss are on the board.

:18:57.:19:04.

Just below the crossbar, that is where she needs to make contact and

:19:05.:19:08.

she does an excellent job to make certain. She deserved it for the way

:19:09.:19:18.

she orchestrated that entire shift. Switzerland are hitting and hoping

:19:19.:19:20.

right now. This could be real danger. A chance for the Finns to go

:19:21.:19:28.

two up. A wonderful finish. She spotted the move. Look at this.

:19:29.:19:38.

Frosted it into the back of the net, great finish. -- thrusted it.

:19:39.:19:48.

STUDIO: We understand the Swiss have got a goal back, the first goal they

:19:49.:19:52.

have scored in the whole tournament. They were beaten 9-0 by the United

:19:53.:19:57.

States but they are back in this match. In the Swiss ranks, two sets

:19:58.:20:05.

of twins and a 15-year-old centre. Although she is young enough, she is

:20:06.:20:08.

certainly good enough. We are going live to the second period. Good

:20:09.:20:16.

morning to our commentators. Commentators good morning.

:20:17.:20:29.

Muller has been the best player on the ice, 15 years old but a huge

:20:30.:20:35.

talent. The Finns will try to get back on track. They are in blue,

:20:36.:20:43.

white for the Swiss. Maybe an opportunity to level things up. A

:20:44.:20:50.

penalty will be called here. What is the decision? It is just a whole. I

:20:51.:20:59.

wondered if she was going to put her arms in the air. If a Swiss player

:21:00.:21:05.

was Home Free, had to step on the Finnish player and was restrained.

:21:06.:21:11.

She has got her stick and is preventing her from getting control

:21:12.:21:14.

of the park to the backhand side -- of the puck. A power play for

:21:15.:21:29.

Switzerland and a great advantage. They skate five on four for the next

:21:30.:21:36.

two minutes. And that means they can try to camp in this offensive zone

:21:37.:21:46.

and try to create something. One of the twins lasered off to her sister,

:21:47.:21:51.

who fires through a gap, and the goal is there. Well finished out in

:21:52.:22:06.

front. The park bobbled around. Stanz was on the doorstep. That

:22:07.:22:16.

penalty really hurts Finland. Her second goal in this tournament,

:22:17.:22:21.

Marty makes a great play, back to her sister, it is through and it is

:22:22.:22:24.

a kaleidoscope of action as it ricochets around. It is Marty would

:22:25.:22:32.

be shot. And then Stanz in a perfect position to put it in the open goal.

:22:33.:22:41.

-- it is Marty with the shot. The power play proves extremely useful

:22:42.:22:46.

for Switzerland. Stanz has been a strong performer for Switzerland,

:22:47.:22:51.

despite their heavy defeat. She is blessed with offensive talent. Now

:22:52.:22:57.

she is on the board. She is definitely in the record books from

:22:58.:23:04.

an Olympics perspective. So Finland, now, have to see what they can do.

:23:05.:23:22.

Tapani has been a strong performer for Finland so far.

:23:23.:23:28.

Now they clear the zone. That is good stick handling, the shop will

:23:29.:23:35.

come in. We look at the latest goal-scorer,

:23:36.:23:53.

Tapani. No one knows what is about to happen as the puck comes in, it

:23:54.:23:59.

is bouncing around. She puts it in the back of the Finnish goal. It

:24:00.:24:06.

must be some feeling for Stanz to have scored a goal at an Olympic

:24:07.:24:16.

Games. Is there an answer from Finland? Stanz gets locked up, I

:24:17.:24:22.

think we are going to see penalties each way here.

:24:23.:24:27.

They do not like the call, they got locked up behind the play. The coach

:24:28.:24:41.

is a little confused. This is the contact and there is body contact

:24:42.:24:44.

allowed but not body checking. That line is changing as to what was

:24:45.:24:49.

previously allowed in women's ice hockey and what is allowed now.

:24:50.:25:00.

There is, most definitely... I am not going to say body checking but

:25:01.:25:08.

the referee has taken both. They allow it to more and more throughout

:25:09.:25:14.

this tournament. Because they get the stick side, they need to make

:25:15.:25:20.

the call. It is four on four, that means four out skaters, the

:25:21.:25:27.

goal-tender does not come into the equation when we discuss the

:25:28.:25:30.

numbers. That means there is loads of space. If you are a defenceman

:25:31.:25:33.

who is ostensibly minded you can make best of this. -- offensively

:25:34.:25:42.

minded. Muller will replay, the talented teenager. Now it goes the

:25:43.:25:47.

other way, from one end of the spectrum to the other. Villila is

:25:48.:26:06.

now 14 years of age, she was the top scorer in Nagano in 1998. She

:26:07.:26:13.

decided to have children, her eldest is now ten, all of her children play

:26:14.:26:17.

hockey. She decided she fancied coming back in her 40s and she has

:26:18.:26:23.

been an effective player. She is still slight enough and quick enough

:26:24.:26:27.

to make things happen. The Finns are very effective and applied at both

:26:28.:26:30.

ends of the rink and Villila has been involved. They break for the

:26:31.:26:37.

Swiss, what can they make of this? Stanz with some help out there. They

:26:38.:26:47.

good hold on the blue line. The pass was Miss communicated -- a good hold

:26:48.:26:51.

on the blue line. We talked about the defenceman pinching into the

:26:52.:27:05.

play. There is space, high over the top from Hiirikoski. There is a

:27:06.:27:27.

space somewhere. Terho is trying to create something, there is push and

:27:28.:27:40.

shove and the referee has plenty to answer for. This is the play made by

:27:41.:28:06.

the captain. Rajahuhta is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. She is

:28:07.:28:09.

battling for every bit of ice time that she can get. Switzerland have

:28:10.:28:16.

been penalised on this play. I wonder if this is going to go each

:28:17.:28:19.

way and we are going to see another even up call. I think it would be

:28:20.:28:23.

difficult to call one and not the other after that skirmish. We wait

:28:24.:28:27.

and see exactly what the American free does. -- American referee.

:28:28.:28:39.

Well, a power play. Will it be? The referee is try to make herself

:28:40.:28:42.

understood through that gap in the plexiglass. Trying to communicate

:28:43.:28:47.

his message, the coach. I think it will stay as a power

:28:48.:29:00.

play, the coach was indicating with a wry smile how important it was for

:29:01.:29:04.

the Swiss player leaving the penalty box to get back into the defensive

:29:05.:29:08.

zone, as they are currently disadvantaged. There is quite a bit

:29:09.:29:13.

of discussion. Now leaving the penalty box is the Swiss player. We

:29:14.:29:18.

are kind of ad sixes and sevens at the moment. Raselli went into the

:29:19.:29:35.

penalty box. I wonder if she has been tossed out of the game. With

:29:36.:29:43.

her legs. If she kicked out she will have got thrown out of the game. You

:29:44.:29:48.

are not allowed to kick because the skates are so dangerous. I think she

:29:49.:29:51.

is gone, I think she's going to get thrown out of the game, Raselli.

:29:52.:29:58.

There she goes. Wow. You don't see those penalties very often.

:29:59.:30:06.

We await the official call, we will get a better angle. You see that,

:30:07.:30:12.

shoved her away with the left leg and that is enough to get kicked

:30:13.:30:27.

out. The skate play can -- the skate blade

:30:28.:30:32.

the skate blade can do a lot of damage. The Swiss team have got

:30:33.:30:47.

their back against the wall now. They have an opportunity here. This

:30:48.:30:53.

is going to be cleared away. A low range shot, well saved. That was

:30:54.:30:59.

good stuff as Laura Benz get stuck into it. They are right here, they

:31:00.:31:08.

have too many players on the ice. They had a five on three there and

:31:09.:31:13.

it should not have been the case. If we look back, I don't know if we

:31:14.:31:17.

will have a chance to see it but we will see the penalty again, there

:31:18.:31:21.

were five players out there for fin land and only three for the Swiss.

:31:22.:31:27.

It should have been a five on four or a four 13, depending on where the

:31:28.:31:33.

other calls were at. It is an unusual play. Riot hooter was able

:31:34.:31:53.

to muscle her way and an awkward response -- Rajahuhta. They need to

:31:54.:32:02.

get a grip on this. There was a cloud of uncertainty yesterday when

:32:03.:32:06.

a goal should have been allowed or at least referenced to the technical

:32:07.:32:10.

support they have two review with the television screens. You can see

:32:11.:32:16.

the coach from Finland wants some clarity because everyone is confused

:32:17.:32:20.

at the moment. They are discussing this right in front of us. What he

:32:21.:32:25.

is saying is that it should either have been five on four or four on

:32:26.:32:30.

three but it should not have been five on three. He is not happy. She

:32:31.:32:40.

is very strong in her response. I think she has almost accepted that

:32:41.:32:44.

there was a misappropriation of players initially but they cannot go

:32:45.:32:48.

back in time now but they had to accept it and move on. They will

:32:49.:32:52.

look at the numbers ready for this face-off. They have to be strong now

:32:53.:32:56.

as this is a berry tight game and she needs to be in charge. Now it is

:32:57.:33:02.

five on four. We see the 4.30 mark of this power play and there will be

:33:03.:33:07.

an extra player for fin land and no matter how many times they score,

:33:08.:33:11.

unlike the minor penalties, the clock will continue to take on that

:33:12.:33:16.

four-minute penalty and there is no get out of jail free card. This is a

:33:17.:33:20.

huge moment for Finland in this game. These two are battling for

:33:21.:33:22.

third and fourth in group A. This will be really tiring for the

:33:23.:33:38.

Swiss players to play one short for whole five-minute chunks.

:33:39.:33:42.

Switzerland have done well, being down to nothing and coming back in

:33:43.:33:46.

this game. Now they are in the Game 2-2 they do not want to give it up.

:33:47.:33:51.

Even if it is a preliminary round they will want to make sure they are

:33:52.:33:58.

competing. Finland are trying to find some space. Minnamari

:33:59.:34:15.

Tuominen. Michelle Karvinen on the angle.

:34:16.:34:23.

The most important player now will be Florence Schelling. She is

:34:24.:34:32.

world-class. This is the player -- this is the play.

:34:33.:34:43.

They shot will come and a clear away down the ice and the Finland team

:34:44.:34:52.

have two reset. Good penalty killing. The pressure

:34:53.:35:18.

is on again. The Finland team are pending their own ends and half of

:35:19.:35:24.

this penalty has been killed and it is the major penalty that we have

:35:25.:35:28.

seen in this tournament so far. Huge indiscipline. Good play here. The

:35:29.:35:58.

Finland team will be tired as well because the expectation would be

:35:59.:35:59.

that they would have scored by now. 90 seconds remain on the power play.

:36:00.:36:32.

Desperate work from the Swiss at the right times, making sure to defend

:36:33.:36:38.

against woodland. They are looking for the goal on the back hand side.

:36:39.:36:44.

Last-ditch stuff from the Swiss. Having almost scaled amounting, can

:36:45.:36:58.

the Swiss plant their flag on the peak? They have 50 seconds left to

:36:59.:37:09.

kill, they are so deep in their zone.

:37:10.:37:13.

Do not take another penalty now. That is the crucial bit from a Swiss

:37:14.:37:22.

perspective. Florence Schelling is equal to it again. Kira Kosky has a

:37:23.:37:24.

good shot. -- Jenni Hiirikoski. Second this afternoon as well and

:37:25.:37:52.

good finish. Those extra minutes on this power play prove extremely

:37:53.:37:54.

useful for the Finland team. She knows how important that was.

:37:55.:38:09.

The Swiss team were just about to kill this entire major Op and there

:38:10.:38:14.

they find a way again. Finland are in front. Michelle Karvinen comes to

:38:15.:38:25.

the party and get the acclaim of her team-mates on the bench. A power

:38:26.:38:27.

play goal. Michelle Karvinen was actually born

:38:28.:38:41.

in Denmark. She only recently qualified to play for Finland after

:38:42.:38:46.

certain -- spending a couple of years there. She played for the

:38:47.:38:49.

under 20 team in Denmark. That changes the complexion a little

:38:50.:39:05.

bit. The penalty is now over and the Swiss are down by a goal. Do they

:39:06.:39:10.

have it in them to try and create something else having lost the

:39:11.:39:20.

player? I don't we thought they would come back from 2-0 but they

:39:21.:39:25.

have. They could respond and get back into this game. It is difficult

:39:26.:39:28.

to losing a player and I think that was more sort of a momentary lapse

:39:29.:39:37.

of reason really because she was just shamed in the moment and the

:39:38.:39:41.

way she had been pushed down but it is one less player for the Swiss

team. Phoebe Stanz skates away and she has

:39:43.:39:56.

a goal already in this game. She is acclaimed as the best goal taker in

:39:57.:40:05.

the world, Noora Raty. Phoebe Stanz is digging. Where is it? It is taken

:40:06.:40:08.

away by the Finns. We have seen so many different and

:40:09.:40:16.

is in this game. -- deflections. Finland are leading this by 3-0

:40:17.:40:36.

thanks to Michelle Karvinen. It is so important is the Finland bounce

:40:37.:40:41.

back after conceding that goal. There are six areas in a game where

:40:42.:40:44.

you can concede, obviously when you are conceding a penalty or during

:40:45.:40:55.

the power play. Those are areas. The power play proves useful for Finland

:40:56.:41:03.

and you have two bounce back. With two and a half minutes remaining in

:41:04.:41:06.

the second period, they need to get out of here again with no more goals

:41:07.:41:10.

against as we look against -- look at this replay once again. It is an

:41:11.:41:19.

outstanding play. You tell every single kids to go to the neck are --

:41:20.:41:23.

go to the net is hard to keep your stick on the ice which is what

:41:24.:41:27.

Michelle Karvinen does. Look at that stick. That is what allows her to

:41:28.:41:36.

put it home. It is very easy as a player to get impatient and think

:41:37.:41:39.

the park will not come to your stick but it is elementary to be stood

:41:40.:41:43.

there with it but how important was it that when the puck came across

:41:44.:41:47.

you just redirected and that was the difference in the scoreline.

:41:48.:42:03.

Another shot came in and that was well turned aside. That is good

:42:04.:42:13.

stickhandling. Noora Raty is forced to play it and does well and gets in

:42:14.:42:15.

contact. What a path that was. She was

:42:16.:42:34.

looking to get it back from Michelle Karvinen but it did not quite

:42:35.:42:36.

happen. She is a brilliant player. Finland are in the offensive zone.

:42:37.:43:00.

That shot was blocked. That is great defensive play.

:43:01.:43:06.

A chip and a change for Switzerland. Good work here from

:43:07.:43:15.

Switzerland. They did a great job in getting out of their own zone. They

:43:16.:43:20.

were right in there, camped out and they are trying to put the game to

:43:21.:43:21.

bed. Noora Raty could get a penalty here.

:43:22.:43:40.

She was driving hard to the net and she got a stick in her face for her

:43:41.:43:41.

troubles. If Noora Raty does not get a penalty

:43:42.:43:50.

here she is very fortunate. The Finnish defender in front of her

:43:51.:43:55.

grabbed a swish -- Swiss player by her face mask. This was a good

:43:56.:44:01.

clearance by Noora Raty. She cannot quite get it out. Switzerland are

:44:02.:44:04.

late and looking to get a shot in and trying to see if they can pinch

:44:05.:44:16.

a sneaky one. The referee does not agree with what she says. This has

:44:17.:44:29.

been a very entertaining one. There is so much going on. Major

:44:30.:44:33.

penalties, three goals, shifts of momentum. Is there going to be a

:44:34.:44:36.

final moment? Unable to beat the goal-tender. 12.2

:44:37.:44:53.

seconds remain. Florence Schelling does what she does so well. On a

:44:54.:44:59.

couple of occasions she has denied them. The puck just came to the

:45:00.:45:03.

wrong place. Yes, she is a left-handed shot but she has to keep

:45:04.:45:09.

the scoreline at three and she does that her team has an opportunity. If

:45:10.:45:14.

they can get out of this second period and into the third without

:45:15.:45:15.

conceding. It should be cleared without any

:45:16.:45:27.

problems. That was a real chance but the hooter blue and she was unable

:45:28.:45:32.

to get the shot on target. What a second session. This game is finally

:45:33.:45:37.

poised above Finland are in charge. Finland lead Switzerland by 3-2.

:45:38.:45:45.

STUDIO: That match continues on the red button.

:45:46.:45:50.

It is a good game. We will be live and we will bring you up-to-date

:45:51.:45:53.

with it later. We have dismissed to move onto. We are going to reflect

:45:54.:45:58.

on last night and the first ever women's ski jumping competition. It

:45:59.:46:02.

is in the games after a protracted legal wrangle. The campaign for

:46:03.:46:06.

inclusion has taken just about as long as the gold medal's favourite

:46:07.:46:13.

has been alive and she is only 17. She is under five feet and she was

:46:14.:46:17.

Japan's big gold-medal favourite. How did she do? Let's find out.
