Germany v England Highlights Women's Football

Hello, welcome to highlight top England's international against

Germany. If you look back through the history of women's football,

this hasn't been exactly an evenly matched contest, but when bronze

medals were up for grabs at this year's World Cup, England did

finally beat the Germans. The final chapter in England's World Cup

finals but has had just about everything, will it contain a

paragraph that has never been written before? First international

against two-time World Cup winners Germany.

the 90 minutes, it is extra time. Sanderson, why she pulled back? She

was. Penalty to England. Fara Williams has the chance with the

third penalty of the tournament to break the deadlock. Cool as you

like, she has done it again. England have completed their most successful

World Cup finals ever, a bronze medal and a first ever international

win over the number one ranked team in the world, Germany.

As you can see, 1 of our guests played in that match is on the field

when Fara Williams struck the winning penalty, Karen Carney, great

to see you, and Rachel Brown finis, former England goalkeeper. It looked

as though you had quite a party afterwards, you don't need to tell

us too much about that but what was it like to finally beat the Germans?

I think it was years coming, watching it back now on the BT gives

me goose bumps and I don't think I can do it justice about how amazing

it was to explain to everyone but it was one of the best things I have

done in my football career. And was it a good party afterwards? It was,

especially as we beat the Germans on a penalty. Yes, not used in a smiley

context usually when it comes to England. I am not blaming you, just

saying! In terms of the wider context of that victory for English

women's football, given the history, what you think it meant? It is a

first, England made history this summer, and I think that tells most

of the story, but it is more than that, it is more about the mental

barriers, it has pushed the women's came through. They have never done

that before, now they know it can be done and onto this next game.

England play Bosnia in their second European championship qualifier on

Sunday, a match they are expected to win fairly comfortably, so this

match against Germany is the big test this week and the stats don't

make great reading for England football fans. In 21 previous

encounters, England have been on the losing side 18 times and the cask in

Duisburg would be made even harder by the fact that the Germans are in

the middle of their domestic season and the English finished back in

Debut for the 23-year-old goalkeeper for Germany. England are without

five of the team that beat Germany in Edmonton but Taylor and Fran

Kirby are very much the first choice too. Jordan Nobbs is the doubt and

Demi Stokes, overlooked for the World Cup, is another ever present

in the three games so far. A night of the send-ups --sendoffs for the

Germans, another one to brings down the curtain at the European

You and I were watching the game in the World Cup, not at the ground,

because we had to be in Vancouver for the final, we watched it in a

piazza bear on the big screen and the Canadians were very much rooting

for England, I seem to remember. Yes, they really were, we were

standing up and cheering on our own at times but what a result that was

and that just changed women's football.

Mark Sampson looking on, he has made such startling progress as England

coach, coming up for two years in charge. He has done a fantastic job

and the fact that he is prepared to try new players and if you are

performing well for your club, he will put you in. Gilly Flaherty has

done really well for Chelsea and he has put her in to try out against

one of the world's best teams. Mittag got five goals in the World

Cup finals. Laid off by Goessling. A chance the Germany, across the face

of goal and cleared by Alex Greenwood. So far this season, they

have been in devastating form early in their games. They have played for

and they have scored within the opening eight minutes of all four

games --may have played four. I have been impressed with how England have

pressed really high. That is really good positional play by Alex

Greenwood. But England has started well but they have to be aware that

Germany attack at pace with so many numbers and England nearly got

caught out. The free kick goes against Lucy

Bronze. Such a wonderful World Cup this summer with those goals against

Norway and Canada. I thought this was a good tackle, she wins the ball

well. Definitely not a foul. Don't forget, England's road to the

European Championships for 2017 continues this weekend with just

their second game against Bosnia, it is a game you can watch on the BBC.

It is in Bristol on Sunday afternoon. Mark Sampson will be

looking at his team here today, judging fitness, judging competitive

spirit, with that team in mind for Sunday.

lose her marker, step or ten, but she couldn't direct they had

thankfully for England. What a ball that is, whipped in, so difficult

for defenders and goalkeepers to come out and claim. He wants England

to be known as a member of the elite in the world's game.

That is the confidence of the German team, they are not afraid to shoot.

They see a slight opening, a slight opportunity and they take a strike.

Karen Bardsley had that well covered but that is the confidence they

have. Mittag, the eighth highest scorer in

international football. She scored in that romp against Turkey. 7-0 on

the back of a victory at home in Russia. They won in Croatia, that

was a big game for them, Croatia expected to be the toughest

opponents in their group and they started this international season

with a 12-0 win against Hungary. Jody Taylor now out in Australia, on

loan at Canberra. Birkenhead girl. You knew her from her Tranmere days.

Yes, I did, very talented player even then. She has actually just

been back to Tranmere. She has travelled a bit, she has had ten

clubs in Canada, the USA and Australia, all over the place.

Yellow card for Steph Houghton for the foul. I am not sure about this

one either. She has come out of position to try and put pressure but

you can see, she has lived in a little bit later. --She has slid in.

They are full of so much good movement, Germany.

A fine run by the young left back into the penalty area, and saved by

Karen Bardsley. It would have been a debut goal for Rauch. Good

goalkeeping. Excellent goalkeeping and good play by Germany, 1 and two

touch. Lucy Bronze just miss hit the back pass and the full-back was on

it straightaway. She just tries to poke at around Karen Bardsley and

she stood up really well, made herself as big as she possibly

could. That is a good save for England, good strong hand. Mightily

impressive, Rauch, in the under 20 world cup winning side of 2014.

Silvia Neid promoting her to the senior squad here. They are very

strong in the full-back positions. Very similar to Leoine Maier. Had a

rotten World Cup campaign, Jordan Nobbs, the Arsenal player, through

injury. That is a decent strike. They need to test this goalkeeper.

It is her debut. She may be experienced at youth level, but not

at this level. 28 minutes gone, not a game brimful

with chances. A slip like that could be costly, but overall, England are

holding their own here. They really are, I have been impressed with how

they have matched Germany physically, because sometimes that

is an issue when you play the German side, they are strong and athletic

and powerful, but I think England have matched that. Karen Bardsley

did really well of her lying there. --Off-macro her

Williams, her 148 appearance --140th appearance.

Jordan Nobbs has never been scared of doing that. She scored a 30

yarder against Sweden in the under 19 Championships. She scored on her

debut against Italy as well. She got a couple in the Continental cup

final for Arsenal. One was a complete individual goal and the

other one was a 30 yarder, so she has the ability to do that and the

confidence, and it is good to see her back to full fitness.

England have suddenly picked up the pace a little bit. Not a good ball

out of wide by Alex Greenwood. I spoke to Mark Sampson today and he

was saying they want to press Germany high in the German third. To

see what they can get from that. The conservative, hold your shape

defensively and then went they can press them in the final third, they

feel they can be mistakes in the German defence. --There-macro

Lina Magull has stayed down. Again, won the ball, good tackle. Jill

Scott will get forward and support the attack but then she is quite

happy to get back and help defensively too. On the right-hand

side there with the red notebook on her lap is Steffi Jones who will

take over after the European finals. She takes over in ten months' time.

She knows Silvia Neid very well, played for her.

Good saved by the goalkeeper on debut and England could and should

have been ahead. They won't get many opportunities like this on this

ground. Good play opportunities like this on this

unselfish play and I said it Jody Taylor can play on the shoulder, she

will get some joy. Really unselfish from Jordan Nobbs. Demi Stokes

couldn't quite direct her shot and that is a really good chance and you

have to be clinical with those chances, because there won't be

many. But good play, it showed that England completely opened up the

German defence. Suddenly, Jordan Nobbs is winning

the ball in midfield, she is creating, she is elusive and Germany

are finding it hard to hold onto her. She is finding those pockets of

space and when she gets the ball, she is finding a player and making

something happen. I think that is perhaps why we

haven't seen a lot of Fran Kirby, because when Rauch is forward, and

Kirby is coming back to protect Lucy Bronze. Protect is probably too

harsh word, to support her, because they already have Simone Loder out

there. --Simone Laudehr. It came back to Leoine Maier. A fine save.

Karen Bardsley has been very good with everything she has had to do.

Again, it is a full-back, they love to get forward and strike at goal.

That is not a bad effort, it is at Karen Bardsley but she needs the

strong hand to push it over. I thought as the tournament went on

over the summer, she emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in those

World Cup finals. If Jill Scott could have got her

head up, Jody Taylor was going down the left-hand side. Just the wrong

decision, I think. Behringer with the effort that was

always rising high. She has a good international scoring pedigree, 29

goals, she scored in the Euro 2009 final against England. Mark Sampson

playing an important role for England these days.

That is a poor ball from such an experienced player.

Jordan Nobbs is driving the show at the moment. Jill Scott, such an

energetic player. Jordan Nobbs covers so much ground, she wants the

ball back into her feet again. Always hungry for it. Her dad was a

player, Keith, with Middlesex and Halifax and Hartlepool back in the

day, over 400 games, he played. Some of the first half for us,

soon. I think it is a very assured performance from England, they had

stopped Germany from playing. They have maybe not created too many

chances but they had the opportunity they will look back on and think,

should we have scored? But I have been impressed with the way they

have gone about the first half. Jill Scott will still be hoping to

be around, only 28 in 2017, and of course, the next World Cup finals in

France. Half-time in Duisburg, Germany have had a couple of very

good at that is well dealt with by Karen Bardsley, who has had a strong

first 45 minutes. --At very good efforts. The other end, Jordan Nobbs

creating problems for Germany. It is goalless, nil-nil. Sue Smith,

England did very well in the first half and there are now face --they

now face a very changed Germany team, with four substitutes. They

do, it is a friendly game and it is a chance to make those changes.

England have not made any changes but I am sure as time goes on, he

will bring in other players but looking towards Sunday, he will

think he will want to save players for that game. A word for Pharell

--Fara Williams. that European championship qualifier

against Bosnia Herzegovina. You can watch it on the BBC. They will

want Lucy Bronze to stay clear of any injury for that. But it was

Rauch who went down, feeling the effects. I think it was a really

good header and I think Mark Sampson agrees with me, he is not sure why

that free kick was given. It is a fair challenge.

Good view of their of the England tactics, line of four, a line of

five. Played in the play-off against

England in Canada. Can be a danger, scored a couple the season against

Russia. England have looked very sharp and considering there is any

Fran Kirby and Gilly Flaherty who has played in the Champions League

recently, all of the others haven't played for four or five weeks. They

are doing something right. They did have the two match tour of the Far

East, China and Australia. But some of them playing their first

international of the season. The flag raised. That is exactly the

ball but needs to be played, maybe a little bit earlier. You could see

Jodie Taylor was pointing. I admired the sort of phlegmatic way

she accepted defeat in the summer, in the semifinal and also in the

play-off match. It is cold, and I'd for hot dog and chips. That is just

appear in the commentary position. No, the way she treated successive

failure in the same way. They have worked very well together,

Steph Houghton and Gilly Flaherty, the England centre backs.

No place in the starting line-up for Bassett, she is in the bench --on

the bench. Wonderful World Cup, tinged sadness of the semifinal. And

Casey Stoner in there as well. Yes, vastly experienced. Steph Houghton

with a slight error and O'Flaherty came over and covered. And in a

previous attack a few moments ago, when Steph Houghton crossed in front

of her fellow centre half, Lucy Bronze went in and covered, so they

are working well as a unit. They really are, you would think they had

played together for a while in the way they are covering for each other

and helping each other out, some very timely tackles. Gilly

and helping each other out, some Flaherty's third International and

you wouldn't believe it, the way she has settled in there.

It is poked effort that wasn't far wide. Babett Peter up from the back.

That was close. It was well dealt with, it was a good corner and Steph

Houghton dealt with it and as it is stumbling around, just trying to toe

poke it. Again, I think Karen Bardsley had that covered. They have

got to be aware of the second balls, England. Jodie Taylor tried

to block that. I think Mark Sampson is saying they have to try and clear

a little bit further on that second ball. Only four international goals

to her name, the centre back, but at club level, she was a regular

scorer, one every 15 games from a defensive position. Nine Jude, they

used to score for fun. Lucy Bronze gave it away. Saved once

a -- again very well by Karen Bardsley. England are under

pressure, in their own half and defending for their lives.

Steph Houghton did what she could but the second ball, they are alive

and alert and they shoot as soon as they see it. Not as comfortably as I

thought! She had a little smile after that.

Karen Bardsley came out, what a strong night she has had. A good

ball in and as a defender, should I leave it for my goalkeeper or vice

versa? They both managed to scramble the ball away.

Goessling will take the corner. Eight white shirts in or around the

penalty area. England need to be watchful and they weren't and it is

a great chance for Marozsan and Germany should have been ahead. Well

done, Karen Bardsley. But who was picking up Marozsan? She makes a

good run of macro, Steph Houghton is going mad, saying who was picking

her up? Completely on her own, and as a striker, should have done

better. Good set piece routine, lots of

rotational movement in there. From that position Marozsan should have

had her 27th goal, and her coach knows it.

And there, the competitiveness, Baha'i pressure, winning it back so

quickly. That is what Germany like to do to other teams, so England

have matched them in that, the workrate has been excellent. White

match has been made of Jurgen clop's practical as if they are

world shattering, Bayern Munich have been doing it for years -- might

Jurgen Klopp, winning the ball back within five seconds, they have been

doing it for years, the Liverpool team of years ago, Leeds United

before that are pressing with the ball back quickly, it is not a new

tactic. White whatever you call it to work hard across the pitch. Yes.

Fall back as quickly as you can. Not saying Jurgen Klopp hasn't started

well at Liverpool. Benkarth showing confidence on her

debut. Oh, there's a mistake there. Will

Jill Scott go for the chip? No. It was the right idea, completely

the wrong execution, good pressure from Tony Duggan, made the

goalkeeper decide, I was thinking, hit it! She slips just about as she

was going to do it. We weren't the only ones, Duggan, in that Scouse

accent affairs, was shouting at her to have a go. Good challenge from

Flaherty. Came to meet the ball and made sure she won it. She has had a

very good night. She really has, both her and Steph Houghton, very

timely tackles, and they'd leave the game so well. Marozsan. In behind,

but feeling her way back to full fitness, the talented Marozsan. The

youngest ever Bundesliga played player in the women's game, made her

debut at 14 years old. In by Bronze. A free kick to

England, Jill Scott foul. Worked hard yet again for England. And if

she starts at the weekend against Bosnia-Herzegovina, I would bet on

her scoring in that game, Jill Scott. I wouldn't be surprised.

Every player has worked really hard in the England squad. The players

that have come on have come straight in and pressed, they have worked as

a team. I have been really impressed. The last 30 seconds, just

a little bit of stoppage time. What is the significance of this goalless

draw? This is a good result for England, the fact that they are not

in season, which we mentioned earlier, Germany are, Germany will

want to prove a point, won't they, from the World Cup. Duggan, could it

get better for England? Denied Germany chance to score... Just got

very nearly at the end, popped up. Entering stoppage time, it floated

just over. That would have been even better, wouldn't it, had England

just got the goal right at the end. Good play from Duggan, hold-up play,

quick feet and found Jill Scott. Did everything right but who the target!

Got her foot and Adobe there are a little too much and over it went.

Sensible ball at this late stage in the game, out wide into that space.

Looking for Duggan. And a very good result for England

in this match. Away in Germany in the past this would have been a game

to be feared, but this reflects the growing maturity of this England

side, Germany could not get revenge for that third-4th play-off. England

go into the Euro jumping your qualifier on Sunday gone to Bosnia

with a very good goalless draw in Germany. -- championship qualifier.

You must be very pleased with that, Mark. We are. Germany is always a

tough game, but an important aspect of our play tonight was to stamp

authority on the game, and show no fear. I thought the players were

exceptional, their mindset and mentality to compete physically

which you have to do in these games, I thought we press the ball very

well and created good chances through that, and of course when you

pressure the ball Edo and get everyone in the right place, but we

are fortunate to have an outstanding goalkeeper made fantastic saves

tonight. I thought if there was one downside maybe we panicked a little

in the final third. We might have come away with a victory but for

that. If you were offered a goalless draw before the game would you have

taken it? The fact that I am being honest in saying no shows the

confidence we have in the group and the group's confidence in

themselves. You could see that. The ball comes up for one minute and the

bench are moaning there should be more. There is growing confidence

and belief and to come to this intimidating environment against an

excellent team really well coached by a superb manager, you have to

front up and they did that. You have to keep going on Sunday. What

positives can you take into that Euro qualifier? It is a short

turnaround so we have to recover and get sorted for that, but is a big

one as well, we are excited to come back to play in front of our own

supporters for the first time since the World Cup, but the players will

be buzzing now, and they know there is a real competition for places in

this group, fantastic footballers in this squad, fantastic footballers on

the bench tonight. We will make changes with an opportunity for new

players to come in. For us it is about keeping the snowball rolling,

building momentum and improving our performance. So a clean sheet in

Germany, not too many nations in the world manage that often. How

impressed were you? I think it is consolidated from the World Cup. It

could easily have been flash in the pan but England have proven tonight

that they are a world-class team with capabilities, and does not

mention, opportunities to be what we have said is one of the best teams

in the world for a long time. It wasn't the most entertaining game as

such but in terms of analysis, big picture wise, what did you make of

what you saw? It was pleasing. To go to Germany, as Mark said, it is

difficult to get a clean sheet there, Karen Bardsley have had to

make a view saves to stay in it, but we had a lot of chances and we will

come away disappointed not to get a couple of goals, but it was a good

performance overall. Everyone should be pleased with it. How difficult

you think it was for them to go to Germany, in the middle of their

season, England finished a month or more ago apart from the Chelsea

players in the Champions League, with saw that affected them there as

well. But compared to the other side they don't have as many injuries.

You can weigh it up but it always helps when a nation is in their

domestic league because they are training day in day out with their

full squads whereas Chelsea and Man City will be training just with the

international players to keep going at the end of a long season, which

included the World Cup. It will have been advantage Germany but I don't

see Germany being that intimidating any more. That's good, that's

progress isn't it! In terms of how England setup, very different this

time last year when they played Germany at Wembley,

time last year when they played defeat, possibly more, very open

that day. . Today it wasn't but how did England play today? They were

very compact as you can see, did England play today? They were

it nice and tight. Everyone is packed together and it is hard for

the Germans to break through, and we win the ball there very well. We can

get closer to our goal and maybe get chances from that. It was a lesson

learned when Mark Sampson's team played Germany at Wembley on that

first occasion, they were torn apart is a job number one was to ensure

England are hard to break down, hunting in packs as we can see here,

and it gives an opportunity, when the centre halves coming beyond the

halfway line to win the ball, it means the midfield and forward line

stay higher and England can press all round the pitch. How much work

goes into that in training? Physically it is hard work because

you are pressing constantly all round the pitch but secondly in

training it is something you have two emphasised time and time again.

We saw England were not just a one-dimensional team in the World

Cup, they could change how they played against different teams.

Tonight how they played tactically was very clever against a

world-class side. There was pressure but they attacked on the counter

frequently and created chances. Yes, Jordan had a couple of chances. She

is very difficult, she has so much energy and breaks off the back of

midfield lines well. She gives herself great opportunities, and as

we have seen this season in the league, she can hit them from far

out and they have all gone in. Again she find the -- finds these pockets

that are difficult to get into and defend against. She will be

disappointed with her own product there but she is such a good player,

so young with so much more to give. She is hard to mark because she gets

into midfield and the Germany centre halves so she finds the angles and

receives the ball on the half term and links it well with the front

three of England, so she has high energy and will do that for the full

game even though she has high energy and will do that for the full game

even though she's. If that pass had been further in, I think the keeper

wouldn't have had a chance to get it. Great counterattack. Four people

in the box against Germany away, we haven't seen that for many years,

and people in the box are looking ready to score. Not many teams in

the world have done that to Germany at their place so we should be

excited by that. As Mark said, perhaps disappointed not to put some

on the back of the net. We talked about Jordan knobs, she was not fit

at the World Cup, she had a hamstring injury, played 90 minutes

and couldn't play against you wonder how well England could have done

with her fully fit. I know how you liked Karen Bardsley's performance.

Some of the saves she pulled off tonight. They are as good as a goal,

a top-class save, as Mark said, she kept them in the game basically,

top-class world-class saves, and what Karen Bardsley brings, she

reads the game very well. Here where Gilly Flaherty gets dragged in she

holds a ground makes herself big. Joe Hart in the Premier League makes

those saves, Bardsley the same. You would hedge your bets with a centre

forward of Germany but Bardsley doesn't go to ground, she stands up,

makes herself huge, the narrow angle, therefore, no goal to shoot

up. Here, she is high off her lying, anticipating any error, being

the sweeter- keeper role, to add flavour to it, does your Hank Ryfa

is well! She reads the game well which is what she does. She is kept

on hotels, a snapshot there from me, a slave I would expect her to

make that still, strong hand, dominant, which is what England

need. Let's hear from Karen Bardsley now reflecting on that performance.

Let me get your thoughts. I was really pleased with the result and

the way we played today. It was a quick turnaround with the

preparation and the travel but we came out here with a mindset to

change the rivalry between England and Germany, and make a stamp on our

previous meeting in the World Cup, and ensure our performance

continues. It is another good one in the books for the Lionesses so I am

pleased. Is the balance tipped in the rivalry, are England more on

top? I think that is the ultimate goal, obviously, there is a lot of

history. But we are looking to start maybe tipping the scales in our

favour. For you as a goalkeeper what is it like to keep a clean sheet in

Germany? It is massive, there is a lot of history and amazing players

for Germany in the past, they are still fantastic players, and in our

rise, changing our mentality and the stigma, and dissolving any sort of

previous ideas we had, and knowing we can match them and we are good

and players, it is about having that self belief, and we had fun and

played well so I am pleased. That confidence came through throughout

the side but none more than so than from Karen Bardsley. The saves were

not flip your lucky, she looked confident. Technically she is one of

the world's best goalkeepers. When she is playing at her best she is

genuinely one of the best in the world, she proved that tonight

against one of the best teams. What she alluded to there is England

still have the respect of German players but they no longer fear

them, and that is what will tip the balance in England's favour, looking

at the European Championships which England could well be favourable to

win. Yes, a lot of players have talked about that confidence and

looking forward to winning something now, but the manager didn't look

happy on a couple of occasions with some of the defending from set

pieces today. Yes, I think with how much work England do on set plays

they will be disappointed with the chances Germany have. Round the back

post there, there is another opportunity missed. Again, call into

the box, good defending in the first phase but goes back in, second

phase, the shot narrowly went wide. We don't like conceding from corners

and set plays. Germany should have taken the lead with that and we

cannot allow a German player to have a free header in the six yard box.

England are lucky there that she didn't finish that, but at major

tournaments if England are looking to win things they cannot allow that

to happen. We scored a lot for us in the World Cup but didn't concede

that many against and you have to have that mindset for tournaments

going forward. Tonight England were very lucky that they didn't concede

but it is positive that we didn't and it was goalless that is a good

thing. This is what friendlies for, to practice these things. Let's hear

from centre-half and Captain Steph Houghton. You have come to Germany

and drawn with them 0-0, your thoughts? From our point of view it

was a fantastic performance, we wanted to come here and perform, if

I think back to the Bronze medal match, that was a better performance

from us, to come here, get a clean sheet and create chances along the

way out of season as well. The 23 that are here and also the staff,

the game plan we had. As captain and defend what does it mean to be the

clean sheet? That is what we are paid to do, put our bodies on the

line make sure we clear balls when McGann and get around the Germans

and be aggressive. When we get the ball we are composed and I felt the

defence and the goalkeeper were fantastic tonight. What has changed

from a year ago at Wembley, losing, too tonight, what have you and in

the last year to come here and draw tonight? A year ago playing the

Germans, the game plan didn't really suit us, but we were a very

inexperienced team and over the last 12 months we have been on a massive

journey, and to come here and get a performance like that, as a captain

improved, now we need to set higher standards, and that is the case

tonight, we need to believe in ourselves even more and play one of

the best teams in the world. Germany are one of them and we give them

respect but we must believe in our abilities, I think we did that

tonight. So much is about believe, confidence, progress, not being

overawed by the Germans. England had a few chances in the game and Jill

tonight we did have a couple of speculative chances, Jill Scott

covered a lot of ground in tonight's gain, and shooting from

and Mac -- Euro qualification groups, Ireland were beaten in Spain

and dropped to fourth in the table. Northern Ireland's next matches

tomorrow against Switzerland. A win would take them level on points with

the Swiss and Italy. Look at that, Scotland top of the group! Looking

good for them to qualify for Euro 2017. They are currently top as you

can see, level on points with Iceland. Their next home match is at
