Mark Williams it was very critical of The Crucible as a venue for such

a prestigious event. So all eyes were on him as he started his first

round match. Not the break off shot he was looking for, catching the

blue. But Liu Chuang may be OK. The conqueror of Jimmy White in the

qualifying rounds. He beat another excellent player in Jamie Cope. So

he has done well to get here. Of course it does not get in the

easier playing the 4th ranked player in the world, Mark Williams.

APPLAUSE. Twice the winner of this great tournament, with all the

experience in the world. He dropped in to the low 40 is a couple of

seasons ago and has had a transformation in the last few

seasons. He must have known that red was heading to the corner, but

the brown may have come to his rescue. I do not know if Mark can

get through to it. Just covered. It will probably just come off the

side cushion and the top cushion to Nestle on this red. He thought

about potting it, but is just trying to get it safe. APPLAUSE.

It might be worth looking at the reds there. APPLAUSE. I think he

was aiming for the bottom cushion. The important part was getting the

cue ball back. He can pot this red, but I am not certain about his

position. Their man is that line of three. -- there is that blind of

three. -- line of three. He missed that by a long way. What does he

have left? Tight against the side cushion. He has left nothing easy.

We have seen so many times that a good start is very important. It

helps you relax once you have a couple of good frames on the board.

APPLAUSE. Nice pot. Could not do a lot we see cue ball, being tight

under the cushion. The next pot is just as difficult. Those reds near

the top cushion - I do not know whether he can reach over them. He

is going to try the extension, but he will be very close to these reds.

He is not using the rest. It makes the pot it difficult when you have

to use the rest, he will not need his extension, so he has taken it

off. Not using the rest just made the pot that little bit more

difficult. That was very awkward. He was booed when he came in, I

bit of a wind-up merchant. So I think that had to do with his tweet

about not liking The Crucible. Everyone else in the tournament,

who is not seeded, is fancying their chances even more. Many of

the top seeds have gone out or maybe on their way out, as things

stand. Again, this is awkward. Everything has been that way for

both players. He is right over the blue with his cue. A good shot. At

that speed. APPLAUSE. Unlucky that he pushed that red out to the right.

It has covered the black king to that corner pocket. But this red

club tables, they would drift down from the far jaw. No problem.

looking for. Against the top seed. Mark Williams had one chance, but

not the best of opportunities. Such a wealth of experience, of course,

Mark Williams. That, more than anything, could be the difference

in this match. APPLAUSE. A terrific pot. He certainly hit the ball well.

He has missed that one, but it will not matter. Liu Chuang wins the

first frame against the number four seed. He will be happy with that.

APPLAUSE. Second frame, Mark Williams to break. That is a decent

break. There may be a gap between the blue and pink for safety down

the left-hand side. There is that gap there. He will have to try to

bend it to catch the edge of that. It is too thick. In the end, he

caught it too thin, making contact with the blue. Mark has the red on

the right, and the black is tied up. The pink may just be available. Not

the type of shot way you would risk potting the red and bringing the

backing to play. If the pink goes to the left corner, that was an

excellent positional shot. It does. It was a good shot. Checking to see

if the pink spot is available. APPLAUSE. The cross, the Marco that

the referee users, was going to go in the middle. He underhit his

positional shot on the pink. He cannot get close to his next red. I

am surprised he played it like that. was a very solid shot, but he has

got too much fun there. You never know what reaction you will get

from the pack. APPLAUSE. This was a shot that he hit very well. When

the cue ball got to the cushion, it had a little bit of side which made

it move further down. If he had stopped the side of the baulk line

he would have had three balls to choose from. He was finding the

middle of the pocket with his pots. There is no value in playing that.

He is trying to find the cushion here, as tight as you can get it.

He may have left a path to this red on the right-hand side of the table.

I do not think that there is any alternative up for him to play this

as he walked past it. I do not understand why he just did not

double it up and down. It was as if he was the player that needed a

snooker. If he tries to cut this end, he has to make sure he is not

going off, as he did in a similar shot. APPLAUSE. He played it slowly,

so there was no danger and the match is now level at 3 each.

Williams to break. It sometimes concentrates the players' minds

when you have the place to yourself. I think it would certainly suit

Mark Williams. He has the advantage, but he has not played well - that

has to be said. APPLAUSE. That was a fluke. A fairly direct plant, not

many balls moved. He did not look at it, did not know anything about

A lot will depend on whether this black is available at the right

days are always looking for an opportunity to bring reds into play.

table. Why didn't he? Why didn't he play into the pack? If he had to

cannon the pink, he would still be on this red and would have brought

a few more reds into play. Now he is on the wrong side of the blue.

Why not look at the possibility of planting it. It was a terrible shot

there. That red on the left is just in the way. The bottom red of the

two. I wonder if it goes in the first place, never mind when the

two reds are lined up. I think you hit the nail on the head. If it had

been the plant, surely Mark Williams would have played it. He

is trying to break into the reds of the blue, but that was asking a bit

too much. This is not a plant into the middle. He was just out of luck.

He never really thought about this. If it was a plant in the corner it

could possibly be made it to the middle. It is dead set. That was a

very late discovery, because he never knew it was there. It looked

as if it was on. Liu Chuang has accumulated 49 points, but he has

been far from convincing in doing so. Mark Williams could easily

pinch this frame, I feel. A lot of pace, but it is a thin cut to the

far right corner. A monks the cluster of five that will go to the

single ball potter, is Mark. Not only a good pot, but perfect cue

could just finish right on the green. Played that one well. That

is a good recovery. The sign of a quick temperament. He knew that the

yellow was a bad job. I APPLAUSE. What was that? Good grief. That

must have been the frame if that does not go in. I am not sure what

side of the blue he played in there. That is very well played. APPLAUSE.

Things are locking up. Then comedy fluke clinches the frame. APPLAUSE.

It then this black will top it all. You could not say he has been

unlucky in this frame. Liu Chuang nearly killed the cameraman. I

think he may be still alive. Mark Williams wins the frame. So' 2 in

front ahead of three. The final frame of this session, Liu Chuang

to break. The ninth and final frame of this 4th session. Of the best of

19. Liu Chuang will be very disappointed. He had many

opportunities and has not produced his best form. The same could be

said about Mark Williams, but his experience has come to the for

quite a few times. When he plays a bad shot he immediately put it out

of his head and gets on with the next one. So a big frame this. Well

Mark Williams have a three frame advantage, or a one frame advantage,

going into the final session. Liu Chuang may feel that he has missed

out on a few good chances. A chance to capitalise on Mark Williams

struggling. If he can just win this frame, he will still be very much

in it. APPLAUSE. He put to a bit of side on that and he has overrun it.

That confirms what would you have been saying during this match -

nobody seems to have control of the cue ball, not consistently. Can he

still get through to this? He could. I thought he had overran it, but

once again, not perfect. --. He has a slight angle on the blue. He has

just did nicely this time to be on the black. -- judged it nicely.

Depends how he sees this, really. He is playing the pink instead. I

do not blame him. Where does the pink go? The best available is the

black spot. He is playing with top- spin, so he thinks he can do it.

Maybe he is right. Not take great chance yet, because the reds are

tight the cluster. But if he can somehow start bringing balls into

played this is a good opportunity. -- the reds are tightly clustered.

It will have to go as close to its own spot as it can go. The red has

just run up the table and covered the pink spot. It is as close to
