Day 7 World Championship Snooker Extra

Hello and welcome to Snooker Extra. Tonight it is the second session of

the second round match between Stephen Maguire and world number 26,

Joe Perry. Maguire led 5-3 after their opening session. We will join

the action with our commentators, Dennis Taylor and John Parrott.

Perry gets the first frame in this second session under way. If it is

anything like their opening session we are in for a treat. Not the best

break from Gentleman Joe as he was introduced as. He did remarkably

well to win the last frame to get himself just two behind. Looked

like he couldn't possibly have been four behind, so it was a great

frame. Three centuries to start this match, one by Joe and then two

by Stephen Maguire. It was a brilliant standard. Look at the pot

I am not sure if that black goes, John, what do you think? It might

be tight but that was a big shot to have for the very first shot of the

opening frame today. If you knock it in it is great for you but if

you miss it you know that you are leading them on. If he screws this

back he could clear the path. You can see the black won't go, you

have the perfect - if he can position that, canon the other red

he might slip behind the black believe it or not. That would be

some shot and it would really open the game up. The other thing about

it, it clears the black spot properly. If he can do this and get

this right, certainly opens up the path for both pockets for the black

sudden he missed a few easy balls - three or four very easy balls - but

he did get it going again at the back-end of the match. Of course

when you are playing three sessions in this second round you can afford

green. It is going to be awkward cuing. I think the green would be

the better one because if he missed the yellow he might leave that

longish one. Do you not fancy the black, Dennis? Well, it is an easy

escape on to the black. It is just a case of how many panels he points.

There was no apparent red there that was on. I don't know if there

is at the back of the pack. I would probably play the back, but there

must be. He is going to go down - he has decided to play the yellow.

Yeah, he had a choice of all three colours there. That is pretty close

but it doesn't matter how close he gets the miss will be called. As

John mentioned, it is much easier to hit the black but he doesn't

want to hit the black. The only thing with this shot playing the

yellow f he hits the yellow full ball he will leave a possible pot

on. That is why I thought maybe go for the green or the brown. It is a

than that. Look at them there. You will see them in a minute, it looks

like an explosion in the paint factory. That was a perfect example

of top spin, the way the white stopped and ran right through the

when Joe gets down to look that will be very tight to him. The

other thing about this shot, if you take the one on the right-hand side

and you knock it in, it is the only one that is reasonably awkward so

Joe might have run that through to get on the black. The angle he had

there he could have rolled it in and finished on the black and

get back to one frame behind but he was a bit lucky, there, steef

Maguire looked so focused. He looked a little bit edgy in his

first round match here but the way he has started this match, he

looked up for it. I think he feels that, you know, it is his time to

lift the world title. It doesn't matter about the blue so the best

possible start for steef Maguire. He had an earlier break of 47 but

Joe had his chances, didn't take them, it 16-3 to Stephen Maguire.

left that a long way short. A chance for Joe here. They are

confidence boosters these. I think there is a built of chocolate

munching going on by somebody and it is putting the players off.

could get off the pink and back up to the blue. Some times if you are

unlucky to have a bump on the middle pocket but that is not one

of the cases there. Joe just didn't have enough side on the ball to

make sure he hit the cushion first. It is all going a bit funny for him

Can he slip past the red? I am not sure if the pink goes in the left

tell you what it is far from. I think he should have just put the

safety shot in. Yes, it was a pretty low percentage shot that one,

it. It is a thin one and the white - well, where is it going to hit?

It should just miss the brown. It might come back up towards the pink

taking the two before the mid- session interval. He has certainly

got this one. So he is on track for that. I say he is on track for it,

but baring snookers, Joe Perry,000 he has one back, he is three -- now

he has one back, he is three behind A bad miss this and very careless

because you are going to put yourself through a bit more Ange

should have been done and dusted. Yeah, it is two snookers that is

required but we have seen quite a few frames lost from that position.

would settle for the outcome. Having said that, I wonder whether

Joe will be tempted to pot into the corner. It is so risky. It is a

shot he could take on, but I do not blame him for playing safe. Under

other circumstances Joe would have had a go at that. He has chosen the

right shot. Yes, he just has not played it so well. He has

disappointed himself. It is not putting Stephen's safety under any

He did not time that one very well. He got close to the pot, but... But

once again he has not left anything easy for Joe. REFEREE: faltered.

Stephen Maguire fought. He dropped the butt of his cue. Joe was forced

to taking that safety on. It is one of those situations, when you do

get a run of the ball, you have to capitalise and air. APPLAUSE.

He got a lucky at the start of this break. He had a good try on the

long pot that he made. Difficult for him to play safe, so he had to

go for the red. Subsequently he had to sit in his chair and watch all

these. So, as good as these players are, sometimes it does not workup.

at the moment. APPLAUSE. A bit of noise from the other table, they
