Carter, a two frame advantage. It will be very interesting to see how

for Carter to take the lead 5-4. I don't believe it, I don't think I'd

ever seen a Kush and bouncers badly -- cushion bounce as badly. Good,

Hello again. On the extra, we have the concluding session of the second

round match that promised intrigue and drama between Alan McManus, who

has quite an impressive Crucible CV, entering two semifinals. He is up

against Ali Carter, former world number two and twice a Crucible

finalist, most recently in 2012. Carter led 9-7 as they entered this

deciding session. Possibly nine more frames to play. We had the

commentary box -- head to the. The final session of this absorbing

match between Ali Carter and Alan McManus. A tough match so far. But

he will be very pleased with his break shot there. Just potting a

couple. Nice break. A high of 77 after 16 frames, but holding on to

Carter's coattails. Probably have to take the long red on. This looks

pretty close. Very dangerous to take it on, he will be heading into that

pack of reds. But he has to be heading into the pocket. Somebody

like Judd Trump would have the cue power to play this as a screw shot

and cannon of the red closest to the pink. But I am not sure that McManus

has that cue power -- off. At first glance, he appears to have been very

fortunate. He will have no idea where the cue ball was going. Very

fortunate, pink and black in open play.

That was the problem. Careening into that lead. -- red.

was going to have to play a safety at that end. He must have thought he

shot, but now he has a chance to score.

The cannon hasn't worked out as Carter would have liked. He would

have liked a fuller contact on the red, possibly even catching it on

the right. The yellow is thin, the problem with this type of shots is

that you get a slightly heavy contact, then the yellow might go

thick. Slightly overcut, but now he is in good position. Black not

available into the left-hand corner. He is in a tough position to get out

for the pink. Trying to play out a fat screw here. Didn't quite get the

end. On a number of occasions, you have to play that long blue. In the

world championship, the heat of the battle, it probably comes down to

about 16 out of 20. It was a great pot. Can he get out of the pink? The

red closest to the cue ball, he has to avoid that on the way back. Might

be a decent spring of the cushion, but maybe not -- off.

That was a huge bounce. It helps here that the green is not

in its spot. That is a bad miss. After that miss, he has overcut the

blue his turn to have a good bit of fortune. Although Alan should get

this, it's never easy when the cue ball is so close. Very easy to hit

these thick. We were watching their rate, didn't look at the white.

Carter will be delighted that it only cost him one point. I know Alan

was close to the red, he obviously felt he had the angle to avoid the

jaws of the corner pocket. He was so disappointed with the result that

maybe he got slightly heavy contact as well, which would have taken the

cue ball towards the jaws of the pocket. Possibly. There is a shot

for him here, just below the pink. Drifting in between those three

reds. Completely mishit I think. Twitched a little bit. Look how far

he missed it by. The proverbial foot. Unfortunately just as Ali was

making his shot, somebody's mobile phone went off in the auditorium.

Not too pleased with that. That is not what the doctor ordered. I hate

to keep going on a about the way they are bouncing, but I think that

one might have expected to be bouncing on the pink or black. Yes,

not a normal bounce. Finished up on neither the pink or black. This

could be very costly, he is probably going to have to play into the blue

or green. A safe area of the table. Might have to play two or three

shots before he gets that contact. A gap between the pink and red. He

might have to play the green. He can't afford to play the pink, there

would be two reds still available. He is in a mess here. Playing the

pink, have to play it with a lot of pace. A bit tight on the cushion.

Excellent escape. Missed it on the first attempt, but what it is

perfect on the second. -- got it perfect. Yes, he had to judge it

very well, if it had caught the pink slightly thicker it could have led

the red into the other pocket. Caught it too thick. Does this red

going to the green pocket? Does it pass the pink? -- go

going to the green pocket? Does it quite tight. There you see, it does

go. No problem with missing the cannon

on the green or blue up the table. Could have done that a bit harder.

That was very nicely controlled. Played a drug shot with lots of

left-hand side to check the cue ball of the cushion -- off. Beautiful

touch when he is playing well. Better than most players. When we

see his hand on the table, he is always going to play the kiss on the

red and black. If it hit the black first, it brings the red and black

into play. If not, he has hit the red from behind and kept the weight

near the cushion. -- white. Excellent pot. You can see how much

lower his bridge hand is that most players. It makes him

higher vision, but Alan prefers to cue very parallel. Needs to be

careful not to foul the black here. Bridging over both the black and the

Chance to get across the table, Dobell. Not the greatest safety shot

in the world -- double. Only one point in it. A lot of life left in

this game. A good shot on the left-hand side,

taking the ball wide away from the pink a very good recovery pot and a

fantastic attempt at the cannon. Very unfortunate attempt.

Deliberately played the cannon into the red. Hopefully pushing it

towards the green pocket. Unlucky not to lay the snooker. A top shot

for Carter, he has to hit it really thin -- tough. Needs to avoid the

black. He won't be happy with that at all.

The older you get, the holder of the long game becomes -- the harder the

long game becomes. Missed it by quite a way. This gives half a

chance for Carter to get a lead. He needs a black on the spot or the

pink in play. I thought Carter might take the chance to cannon into the

red, bring that into play and leave the pink in the middle. Going three

clear. Under tremendous pressure. Here is an angle on the pink here to

try and bring some of these reds into play. The yellow isn't too bad,

if he drops on the cushion between the two reds, he could get the pink

available in two 1 of the corner pockets. Not a great shot. He could

have played the blue with screw on the right-hand side to get it back

into play as well. That is the worst possible kiss. Half ball contact. He

should win the safety exchange here. Amazing. He didn't even look

at the blue, got down and played a yellow. Another poor safety shot. I

am surprised how poorly he has played that shot. The third or

fourth time that Carter has played a poor safety shot and left McManus to

have a go. Back to Alan McManus now. He had a quick look at the blue,

felt the green was in the way. Ali Carter previously had two cushions

to get onto the red. If it straight, it's not -- if it's straight, it's

no good. Probably rolling the red in and playing the snooker behind the

back. You will think that Carter might be in a considerable amount of

trouble -- would. Not the best shot in the world. He has given Carter

the opportunity to come off the cushion with a right hand side. He

could send the yellow towards the right hand side cushion. He has the

option to try and hit the other ball and send it down the table. I think

he will be quite pleased with that. Not too sure about the angle, but he

is happy with the blue. Playing very thin, trying to get the white behind

the blue. A bit heavy. Carter will probably play the yellow up and down

the table, but he could put the yellow behind the black and white

behind brown. Unless that is a cynical, that is a very poor shot.

He is absolutely disgusted with himself. He did have options,

probably played to send the yellow past that pocket behind the green.

There was a good chance of playing the snooker behind the brown. Some

poor safety from Ali Carter this morning. This is one of those shots

you have to go for. He can play it slowly. He will still be on the

ground. Not playing it too hard. Seeing if he can get the white to

bounce off the cushion. If he gets the green, he would be the favourite

to win this frame. And care. What on earth was that? So

much pressure on these guys this morning. Cueball possibly behind the

black. He has a kick. Certainly wasn't very happy with the contact

there. Brushing aside cushion man as he came around. Three relatively

easy safety shots that he has played very poorly, this is a tough one.

We'll be pleased that? -- will he play it better? Possibly even just

caught the cushion first to clip the blue very then there is a very good

chance the cueball could leave Allinson is dead but it is a very

good shot. He's got the blue away from the right-hand pocket that is a

different shot and it is a problem. Blue in open play that he has a very

good white. Good shot, that is as good as he could have done from now.

WoW, that was wired. That is the problem with this super fine cloth

unbelievable the number of bad contacts and big balances that both

players are getting here. It really does destroy a player's confidence

and concentration. Alan will be feeling very grieved. He cannot

believe it. Another chance. Another chance for Ali Carter. He has made

plenty of mistakes. They have to be delighted. He is just about

straightish. They leave the pink in others the key thing is that he is

getting some sort of. CHEERING AND

every chance of going in off there and now he has left himself to

double. It very strange twist of short that is close but not close

enough. -- shot I think Alan will play the cross double here and

Frame 18. Perplexed Ali Carter getting the next frame under way. A

very pedestrian frame, playing the whole match. You can imagine every

frame time is a little bit longer than most, will one minute per

frame. Once again, not the best shape the

shot. He has played it. And played it very well indeed. Unfortunately

for Alan he has finished fairly straight. Just enough of an angle to

and it may not have gone in. This is a good chance now, to make a

sizeable contribution in a very important frame. A friend that takes

that he brought the yellow interplay on this preview show it has give him

the kicks in the bouncers on the table are very offputting and have

trying to do without for both players I think Ali has let a defect

in this morning which is understandable. What are his outlook

on life at the moment? He has been practising altogether a think he is

lucky with the safety shot there, how is he in himself at the moment?

He is great and has been working very hard on his fitness as he

always does, his diet is really good at the moment so... Here's looking

the best I've ever seen him in a think it's really up for this match

and it has been a really tough game against because he is such a great

match player and such a great competitor, Alan. I don't know why

Alan is complaining about something that, he just miss hit it. That is a

rule Rabri of four Ali Carter he has an easy shot and has got away with

it now it is time to start playing some good safety Ali, you cannot

keep finishing a foot away from the ball it is just not good enough.

composure this morning he is obviously not happy with the playing

He wasn't hampered and that would have been very easy to get into the

black off the reds but because he is hampered he will be playing for

colour of the red in the middle. 25. This has been a remarkable

performance from Alan the first frame or is everything was going on

for both players but he came through it with a very good plot on the

final black and the next frame was also am he made 119 and their yellow

and green he missed and he should win the frame from this position as

well. As Peter mentioned, she he could find this match shifting away

from him and he needs to win the last frame before the interval at

You could play it in the middle pocket. A really acute angle, bound

to be on the black. If he misses it, he could almost play this shot to

nothing. It is certainly very tough. Had to play the near ball. 52

points in front. If he can take this yellow on with a bit more

confidence, Carter could get a snooker. I am sure the audience are

as bemused as we are this morning. Alan played very well in the last

two frames. Well conceded. Ali Carter is in trouble mentally and

Alan has realised he can really put a foothold into these quarter-finals

in this frame. He knows that Carter will be seething if he can win this.

He is the favourite now. You have to make every post a winning post when

your opponent is struggling. Wrong side of the blue. Hit that

very hard. The cue ball went nowhere. Another dull reaction.

Tremendous amount of cue power required to get that off the reds.

Happy to take the points. Playing it safe. This red goes by the pink.

Good shot. I don't know if you can miss the

pack of reds on the way down, go to the right of the pink. If he gets

this position right, he could bring the red away from the pink. What

kind of angle is this on the red? I don't think it is high enough.

The black obviously goes on to the pink spot. Open things up a little

bit. If the black is available in the middle, there is no problem.

That wasn't a bad contact, he just twitched at that one. All of the

sudden, a bit of unwanted side. Turned it over completely. You can

see that he knows it wasn't a bad contact.

A better safety shot from Ali Carter. Very unusual, his safety has

been poor this morning, it is normally one of the strongest parts

of his game. A decent cue ball from Alan McManus. An opportunity that

Ali Carter really needs to make the most of. It's just not happening for

Ali Carter this morning. He will be bitterly disappointed. Needs to

control his emotions now. I know that Alan would have made a

wonderful century a that Alan would have made a

but he's not out do a lot this morning. Has to go all out for this

and play for the black in the middle. This is your managed to get

back into this match, it is strict in away from the! He will be

coaching himself He is finding everything difficult

at the moment. The two reds together, he could be on the black

the cushions, he could be in trouble. And its difficult to avoid

concentration. The match on the other table has come to an end

first, there will be a lot of moving around. When you need to

concentrate, that is not what you want. Good shot despite what was

happening next door. That is certainly not ideal. He has

made this very awkward for himself now. Wanted to be much straighter on

this red. Well played. He must have thought that was an easier pot, he

couldn't get close to the pink or black playing that shot. Still 22

points behind. This is a good shot to get pink back into play. Once

again, a very poor positional shot. A wry smile, he needs to check it if

he wants to get near the yellow. A very good pot from Ali Carter.

Just what he needed under the circumstances. A really tough

morning so far. Struck that one beautifully. Trying his hardest to

dig deep and find something. He needs to. And fast.

Got himself to within one point. He will need all four reds and colours

to get the snick. I think he should pot the two loose reds to get a bit

more confidence. If he misses the one down the cushion, he will be

even more annoyed. He knows it was not the right choice, but he had to

do that because of the state of mind he's in. Well cued again. Hopefully

now he is in form. Just got into that red a bit much. He can still

hold for that red on the back question. He will have to play a

deadweight -- cushion. Will he miss the red? Just the pace, slightly

overclocked. The pace allowed it to drop. Got good angle on this black.

But the next red is very tricky. It's got another bounce off the side

cushion. The cue ball bounces. You can see. Bigger bounce than he

wanted or expected. This is really tough. If it is not tight on the

cushion, it's tough. It looks like it is tight. He's missed that. Very

frustrating. He did all the hard work, it was a fantastic break.

Unfortunately, he is only 22 points in front with 35 on. Not straight on

this yellow, but I think he's OK. Easier to clear up. This is a

massive shot in context of the match. That one shot made him the

favourite to win this frame and go 11-9 in front. Just one short away

from winning that friend. This was the shot. This is Ali's last chance

to come back to the table if he doesn't get a nice one on the pink.

What a shot! McManus goes into the lead!

frame of mind where he can compete in this match. Decided not to play

this shot. We will see what Peter says when he returns to the

commentary box. Played so well in that first frame, completely

dominated the next three. Completely dominated the last frame of the

session. Peter, I might have to ask you how the conversation went, or is

that players privilege? It's a tough one. Ali was great in the first four

frames this morning, he is a class player. Two-time world finalist. Now

is the time to show some character pace he has his emotions in control

now and he's pretty good. Got that cushion there. I don't play him. He

was five feet away. 71. He has finished and Ali Carter

is back in this match with ten. Alan McManus is just two friends away

still. Probably is in the quarter-final. Of this year's

snooker championship. A better break from Ali Carter as well. That was a

very attacking it safety shot very fortunate to snooker read into the

corner pockets. He will probably feel that he deserves some good

fortune the way things have been happening. In the first four frames

of this morning's session. In this scenario the last frame where he was

in all sorts of trouble once again, he is resting three to the right of

the pink but he's not playing that he is playing the cushions left to

the pink but now he is looking at a different cushion. Amazing. He has

played three kisses trying to kiss that red card and get back into

ball. One thing for certain, if he gets this wrong he will be careering

into three raids this is a very dangerous place for me. -- play for

me. I guess they do not call him "angles" for nothing. No, slightly

further away that time. He may persevere with it because he knows

the shutters on we sometimes you play a shot and you miss it twice

and you think will be angles are there to play that. I can't

understand why he has not looked. He is trying to rest on those three

reds because even if he misses the reds he will be in the corner. He is

having another go at it. If he over adjusts it could be too thick. That

is too narrow. I think he is squaring up with a second kiss

there. He actually played that I'm like a stunned shot and the cueball

actually squirt up of the very first question. Put the ball is back where

they were and not leaving the place from now. He knows he is in real

trouble. Persevering again with the same shot. That is a bit wider.

is an opportunity. Black not available for the two corner pockets

here but the reds are. Not necessarily with their shot will he

middle pocket here and it is very thin. You can't guarantee a good

cueball he can be trusting like a bit if he can be trusting like a bit

time he has left it. Playing that shot in Ali's mind he probably

thought while this is so thin I can't possibly over cut this. But

over cut it he did. And Alan Wall try and hold for the pink he will

an opportunity to find the most difficult place on the table he

at the way he is thinking about playing it and squaring up and years

squaring the brown he is looking at alternatives. He needs to be in the

middle of the back cushion that is the basic to get the red in. This

isn't straightforward as he suggested he needs to avoid some

left black pocket is possible, as the option of playing this plain

morning. So far anyway, he has not been taking them. Looks to have

weathered the storm somewhat in the previous frame. But he can't keep

giving chances to somebody of Alan McManus's class. I don't know that

he feels the cueball drifted a touch their war... The fact that he is

hampered affected his queueing. Probably the latter. I would think.

That is another let off for Ali Carter. He can't keep presenting

Alan McManus with these opportunities though. Sooner or

later he is going to take them. That is a very good pot.

as you would like. Media gap to go through the reds to get through to

the pink. Played the gap got it nicely. Open things up at the Centre

the table. A massive chance now. He has got the opportunity to just

slip past the red closest to the black. It should leave him a choice

of two. It could go wrong if he captures the red, which he did.

Fortunately he is still on a red, but that is not how he wanted to

plays this. What a fantastic shot! It's one of those, you have a

different frame of mind when you're playing that shot. If you are 35 in

front, you would play a different shot. 35 behind, you're playing to

get back into the frame. Not a plant in the middle. The next two or three

should be pretty straightforward. Then the work starts. He needs all

of those to get back into this round. Not too sure that he can miss

the kiss on the red. The way he is cueing, he can't. Going around the

back of it. A very fortunate tests. He played for the two reds below the

pink -- kiss. Straight on this black. Not a

problem to roll through, the red into the opposite corner pocket. A

stunning shot. A nice angle on the red. He can play this as a delicate

screw shot. Players tend to play that in such a fashion that if they

were to miss the red, they would give themselves every opportunity of

covering it with the black. That was the way he played it. A very good

opportunity to get himself back into this frame.

Would have liked to have left himself an angle on the pink to

perhaps develop himself on the red away from the left-hand side

cushion, left himself on the red. But he tends to take what's there.

Prime example, a lot of players would try for the red, he is going

for the black. Four points in front. The brown is going to be his saving

ball, if he gets these next two reds. Not the desired kiss, I wonder

if it passes the green? Let's have a look at where the red is. He's

playing it safe. The needs a good safety here. I don't think that's

it. You can swerve around the screen, surely. A very poor shot.

Very unlike him. That is a bad one. Slight swerve on the left-hand side.

You feel as if he got a bounce of the cushion -- off. He knows he has

to take the pink on, and if he gets it, he will be on the last red. For

a second, I didn't think that was in. A deep intake of breath as he

comes to the table. He's played this really well. He would probably like

to get onto the yellow so he can the brown into play. If he plays the

screw shot, there is a chance of snookering himself the hind the blue

-- behind. The only good thing about that shot was the white going off.

It's hard to keep your emotions in check when you are giving away such

a golden opportunity to get level. Not the best safety shot, is it?

Nope! Ali does have a straight safety shot, but I wouldn't be

surprised if he took this yellow on. That's incredibly fortunate.

really mean it when that happens, do we? But it is good to do it anyway.

Can he get it safe? He can. Things would level up, normally.

recovery. Without the kiss on the blue, it is safe. Very fortunate not

to have left a pot on. Such a big frame for both players. The

difference between 11 each and 12-10 is massive. A good attempt, didn't

quite have enough pace on the cue ball to get the snooker. But a very

good safety shot. A tester for Ali Carter. Played it nicely. The yellow

has bounced just a touch. In with a chance here. I can assure you that

he did go for the pot they are, but it was very nearly an excellent

safety shot. You tend to stay on the thin side. An opportunity to snooker

fortunate again. There is a good chance that I -- that Alan can pot

that. He has to hit it virtually a three quarters ball to pot it.

Difficult to judge. Putting him 12 in front. How does he get on the

brown? The fact it is frame ball, he will be taking on this double.

concentration and focus looks to have come right back. After that

losing prime position. The pink in the middle, it may not be too bad.

The screw back, back on the black again. A terrible kick that time.

But a good recovery from Carter. Got a couple of loose reds. Not the

ideal angle. Leaving himself an angle after potting this red.

have played it a little bit harder to make sure that it didn't stick.

Should be OK. Almost in between a stun and a screw. The stun shot

didn't work out as well as he would have liked. He still feels he has a

chance to win this match. Not one of his best positional shots. And other

heavy contact, watch the black jump -- another. Another thing that

upsets these players about the bad contact is that you know you can

lose position or miss the pot. There is nothing you can do about it, it

is just very frustrating for the players. Still, 54 break. An

excellent set from Ali Carter so far. Just took some pace out of the

cue ball. Played that nicely. Three reds and three colours. The three

below the pink lined up like soldiers. Just look at that! Three

feet further than it should have done. Please, somebody set fire to

moments in this match. It's taken a while, but we are actually beginning

to see signs that the real Ali Carter is turning up. I would still

be a little bit worried about his emotions if something went wrong in

the next few frames. He could still win the match.

He has had an amazing year when you consider how much people have been

complaining about the tables. consider how much people have been

gimme it is more difficult than it looks on your screen is he just

needs to drop this in at quite an acute angle. He has played that

He has been very unfortunate to leave himself hampered he needed a

few more roles on the cueball there and he would have a choice in the

middle. No spot. Just wanted to slide past that read, this is really

very good safety shot to giving your opponent an opportunity?? Above

ground it is fine in the way it is perfect as unfortunate the pocket

time. But when you do play bad, you can still scrap it out and that is

what he has been doing, he has been scrapping it out at the moment. Oh,

that is a marquee if he wasn't hampered with the red he would be

with all black and that is the chance of a frame very much and now

he is hampered. Played purposely into the two red scare and the think

he is almost going to be beyond blue and black and he has finished right

a terrible final session for Ali Carter as he got another big bounce

from Alan McManus as Ali Carter is very disappointed. Alan is back in

the big time as he is winning it the match and goes on to the

quarter-final. Well played Alan McManus. It's a tough match I had to

tough it the whole three days and none of this really were getting

gone. I sensed he didn't have his best game with him and neither did

I, I had to tough it out and I was playing catch up the whole match and

it was always one or two behind it seemed, a little bit of experience

can be in there as a thought even though I was a frame or two behind

if they can very deep if it can get ten in or 11 each bend it is a coin

flip match and a bonus to get a leap coming out small enough to put its

pretty decent in the first four and I wanted to take my chances which

was kind of the game plan. Take my chances. I would say it was more

frustrating for me than him because he won. It is only frustrating for

me because they didn't win. It was a bad results, a bad performance from

me from start to finish really. I really struggled and it wasn't for

lack of trailing maybe us trying to hard? I don't know. It was a big

opportunity for me and him to play shot in the last 16. Very very

difficult to get anything going and they tend to think he did take the

pace of the match a half-hour frame and scrappy frames and they kept

showing to get myself going and it felt like I just needed to pots one

good ball and it would kick me in the year but I didn't have anything

left in my tank to find some gears when they needed to. I knew I needed

to go up a gear and win easy but... I was stuck in neutral I'm afraid.

When things have not gone the way you hope to be well sometimes I am

out looking around me and I think this is where I want to be. This is

where I've always wanted to be all my life. Simon not going to complain

about it, and just going to get on with it. Through to his second

quarter-final in the last three years and he is guaranteed to play a

top-10 player John Higgins or Ricky Walden in a quarter-final. That is
