Welcome to snooker Extra, extended high lites of the 2017 Betfred World

Snooker Championship. We have reached the quarter-finals and our

featured match stonite sees Stephen Maguire who is in the last eight for

the first time since 2012 taking on the runner-up of 2013 Barry Hawkins.

Match commentary from Peter Ebden and Willie Thorne.

Well, there you go. What a pair of glasses they are, Willie! Yes, our

friend from New Zealand I think he is or Australia, has been coming

here for the last 15, 20 years, always sitting in the same seat.

Lovely guy. Loves his snooker. The red to the extreme left is

potable but he can't do anything with the cue ball. Playing a safety

shot, I presume. The three reds below the pink, the bottom red of

the three will cut into the corner and he can get round the back of the

reds. Can you see that one, Peter? I can only presume he can't get to

that red. Worried about the cannon. Not too

sure whether he can get to the potting angle because of the blue.

The blue is in the way possibly of that one but it is close.

Very, very good. Very unlucky as well. For one minute he was perfect

on the pink, the next minute, the red came across and moved the white

behind the other reds. Unlucky. So unlucky. What a fantastic pot that

was. Letting Barry Hawkins know early on

that he's up for it and he's going to play attacking snooker and if he

gets the opportunities, he's going for them. It can be a very

intimidating player to play, Stephen Maguire, very aggressive. Opens the

balls up at the very earliest opportunity, scores heavily in

amongst the balls. One of the few players that's made over 350

competitive centuries, making him a class break-builder. Ronnie

O'Sullivan said he was going to be the real deal for the next ten

years. Nobody wants to play him, rest assured. A tough opponent.

In his early days he practised a lot with Stephen Hendry.

Chance of getting the cue ball in behind the brown. The line was good.

Chance he could get the cue ball behind the brown. Needs to avoid the

kiss on the blue. Both players have not found the pace

of the table yet. One thing's for certain, he wasn't

playing for the pink. Definitely a bonus that it potted thin. He was

planning to go through the gap for the blue, green or brown.

Just over-screwed that by two or three inches.

Doesn't really want to play the red that's nearest the black cushion,

unless he gets on it in such a way he can kiss the red next to the

black. Interesting to see what he plays for.

Not bad. If he can kiss the red directly above the one he's potting

now, he'll kiss into the red and be nicely on the black. Or he could

play the other one and kiss into it. I think the guarantee kisses, the

one in the same pocket that he's going to be playing on the black.

It's a tricky pot. To cannon that red, he may have to

play with a trace of right hand side. I don't think he'll fancy

doing that. Slightly easier pot. Very difficult

pot because he's going to have to play it with the spider. When

playing these shots, you would like to make contact with the centre of

the cue ball. But this is really tough.

You probably will miss this four or five times out of ten, it's that

tough. Yes. Very, very difficult pot.

It's the fact he was playing plain ball that I didn't fancy him to pot

it. Played purposely out for the pink. This is a chance Stephen

Maguire probably didn't think he'd get this early.

Maguire would love to leave himself on an angle to take the difficult

red near the black cushion. And cannon into the red. He to the right

of the black. As Willie suggested previously.

He doesn't want to finish straight on the wrong side. That's one of the

reasons why he chose not to play that shot. Needs to be careful in

potting the red into the right corner, cannoning the red away from

the black. If he's unfortunate, he either won't be on the black or the

red could cover the left pocket. That is why he played it as a screw

shot and that is an excellent shot. Well played.

If you have one of those days where things aren't going for you, the

black can go in. I was a little surprised he played it that way, but

he played it perfectly. Five points in front, there are at least five

remaining reds. Barry Hawkins has become one of the

best players in the game. Very hard to call a winner in this

game. An excellent example of Stephen

Maguire's cue power there. Generating lots of spin on the cue

ball. Had a quick look when the red passes

that. Not quite the desired angle. 33 in front. Red, black, red, will

take him past the winning line in this frame.

May just use the pink to hold it in. If he can do it without holding the

pink he will do and he was able to do that. He'll want to pot the last

red as well to keep Barry Hawkins off the table. OK there is a chance

of making a century, but what you must do in this situation is keep

your opponent off the table. If he pots the last red he has the chance

of a century and also of keeping Barry off the table. Excellent break

so far. Played off the side and baulk

cushion. Does he have enough side? No, a bit short on pace. Really

tough pot into the right hand black pocket. Fabulous break of 81 takes

Stephen Maguire into the lead, 1-0. Barry Hawkins breaks off in the

second frame. Impressive break by Steve Maguire.

Amazing how much travel he got on the cue ball there. He looked as

though he underhit that, yet the cue ball travelled and travelled. Yes,

both players have been struggling with the pace to be perfectly

honest. Haven't found the baulk cushion, thought he hit that too

thick. Surprised to see it past the baulk line.

All out for the pot. Played that beautifully. Well done. If you lose

the first frame, you would be reluctant to play that shot, but the

fact he's won the first frame, that gave him a bit of confidence. Yes,

and that was a magnificent pot. You cannot strike the ball any better

than that. Now, Stephen Maguire is prowling

around the table like a predator. He's bang up for this. And don't be

surprised if he knocks in a very big break here. Yes. He'll be annoyed he

got himself out of the top 16 over the past year. He's definitely a top

16 without any question, but he had to go through the qualifiers at

Pond'skm forge. He had a reasonably favourable draw and came through

convincingly. -- Ponds Forge. One red is loose on the outside of

this pyramid. He's got Reds available into the

middle pocket, so it may be worth the risk at this time. He's not

doing it. He could have easily played for the

blue there. Does Steve Maguire have a maximum on his mind? No need to

play the cannon this time. Bit thin. We'll know after this shot whether

he has any aspirations of making a 147. Can he see enough of this red

to get on to the black? From that picture, it's very tight.

That wasn't the bad shot, it was the black before. He could have ran

another two feet pace off the previous black. It was very

disappointing that he missed that. If Barry Hawkins would have won the

first frame, he might have played differently. He is playing the

safety shot. Well, it's not ideal. And if Stephen

Maguire can find the gap between the black and the red on the top cushion

in the direct line behind the Macspot he'll be taking this on.

Didn't get the gap. More importantly, he didn't get the red.

Just the pace that kept that out. Throwing the cue ball to the left.

That's why the red went thick. Very good opportunity for Barry Hawkins

now. Most of these reds will go. Two reds on the right will go into

the left centre. Won't need to play any cannons for

quite some time. Providing he retains good position.

Played for the red into the right centre.

Screw shot. Cannon with a touch of left hand side from the red to the

right of the cluster leaving him on a red in the opposite corner. He's

played for the single red. This opens up the other reds as

well. Don't necessarily have to play into the bunch. Every time he moves

one of the reds, another one becomes available. He may have to now

because he just lost the cue ball a little. Would have preferred to be a

little straighter. He can still screw this in and play for the red

into the same pocket. Needs to get into the white quickly. Decided to

play the cannon. That's worked out very nicely.

He'll be disappointed not to win the frame now at this visit.

Stretching slightly. Timed it nicely.

Barry Hawkins tends to pot almost every ball right into the centre of

the pocket, just a beautiful cuist. One of the most important things

about the way Barry Hawkins times the ball, is that he plays with such

precision and puts very little effort into his cueing that the

balls are actually reaching the pockets at a far less pace than some

other players that like to play hard stun shots. That makes the pockets

more receptive to the ball. Good point.

Needs an angle. Shouldn't be a problem. Shouldn't be a problem.

Just shows you, at the club -- Crucible, you can miss anything.

That was unlike him. Missed it by a long way.

You could see there that Barry wasn't happy. Cued right across that

one. Bit of good fortune there covering

the red with the blue. Also leaving the green. Three reds are all tied

up. Maguire coming to the table. The red

into the centre is far too difficult. Trying to get the cue

ball behind the black on the cushion. To gain the initiative in

this safety exchange. He's played that very well.

Look at the stats as well. These two players, you consider they play

tournaments week in week out, haven't played each other in this

country since 2014, all the matches have been abroad, in China and

places like that. First time they've played in Great Britain in four

years and they've played each other 17 times.

A good effort. I think you may be able to get to the red to the left

of the green with a little bit on either side but that is no good of

the kisses into the green. It looks likely to push an escaped arrest

into the red in the Balkan area. To cushion escaped arrest on to that

right. The first line wasn't good but the second and third line was

good. Just slightly misjudged it. He may take this red down the middle.

That was an excellent pot. It was a lot more difficult than it looked on

your TV screen, I can assure you. He may try and get the Brownback on

the spot here. It really depends if the red closest to the ground --

brown goes into the green pocket but from where he has finished he may

have to take the red into the centre. He has also put the red into

the middle pocket but he doesn't want to finish straight on this he

certainly made sure he did not finish straight on it but I am not

so sure he will be taking it on now. This is a very admissible. He has

the long red into the pocket. The problem with taking this red on,

unless he plays it with a lot of pace, if he misses it he could leave

it right over the pocket. He played that really well. That is a very

nice kiss on the blue as well. 19 points in front. We are presuming

the red passes the green into the right-hand corner. It tells us that

the red is definitely available. This is virtually a frame ball

because the colours are certain as long as he pots the red. Looking to

get a second bite on the Cherry having missed the long and straight

red on his previous visit. I think on reflection of the opening

two frames, it is about like that they share the first two. -- about

right. It is Barry Hawkins that levels that

one frame at peace. -- apiece. Barry Hawkins to break.

Barry Hawkins breaks off. Leading by two frames to one.

Stephen Maguire just played that with a touch of right-hand side and

because he played top spin with right-hand side the cue ball pulled

to the right slightly over distance and that is why he overcooked that

is why he overcooked but red. This is a very good reply from Barry

Hawkins, excellent legs and well played.

A little bit of movement on the other table, that session has come

to its interval before ours. We only have one more frame on this table.

Foul. Stephen Maguire, four. I'm not sure if it was an optical illusion

but it looked as though it flicked the green there but the green is

still on its own spot, so maybe not. Does it flicked the green here? I

don't know, maybe not. Stephen Maguire has a long straight one to

play. Will he be on the black doesn't want to screw back full ball

colour? The way he is playing the white he is going to screw back for

the yellow. It is decision time for Barry

Hawkins. Just off straight and this middle distance into the left-hand

black pocket. There is an easy safety shot. By taking the red out

of baulk. He is going for this, taking this very smoothly. It is a

lovely shot. Very well played. Perfectly on the black. A lovely

shot. He played the drag shot there and managed to avoid the cannon onto

the red. After that lovely opening red this is now a very good opening

opportunity. Their use saw an excellent shot of Barry Hawkins tip.

Slightly domed. Not absolutely flush to the Ferryhill. -- feral. Just

slightly overhanging. Gallery different players have different

preference, we were looking at the Kyren Wilson game earlier on and he

has got a very small tip, virtually to the feral. Other players like to

have quite a big tip and Barry Hawkins will certainly last the

distance. Or did you prefer? You were a big tip man? Are used to play

with began overhanging tip with my old cue which was originally aired

ten millimetre ferule which went down to 9.3 over the course of 30

years. I actually played with a very big tip, as big as 11.4 on a 9.3

ferule which was absolutely huge. Sometimes it managed to block out

the sun. A very big tip and you don't find many top players play

with a tip that size these days. I used to practice with Tony Jones,

who was a very good player, as you remember, former top 16. I think he

won the European open one year. He used to play with a tip that was so

wafer thin it actually used to cut into the cue ball and the ferule

used to damage the cue ball. I have never seen anyone else play with a

two person as he used to but he was a very good player. He was on my

Christmas card list one year. He knocked me out of the top 16 by

winning the European U -- European open, the early tournament here for

one. Thank you so much. I thought he had played that little can a bit

firmer than that but he is still ringing all the reds into play and

that is the reason he is now faced with the blue that he would pot

eight out of ten in practice but this is not practice.

Yes, a lot of pressure. Keep still, please. A bit of movement in behind

his eyeliner. He needs to keep still and hit this very smooth. He struck

that beautifully. What a lovely shot. Well played.

He just slightly under it that. He played the stunning shot with the

right-hand side. He would have liked to be a little bit straighter on

this back. A good shot, played the cannon, and that is perfect.

He has very quickly change this into a chance to win the frame in one

visit. Just ever so slightly the wrong side of the blue there.

He would have liked to be a little bit straighter on this red so he

could have just stunned past the red which is its closest, and get on the

black. In the end he played their cannon, so a choice of black or pink

now. He slightly overcut the black. There

was no problem with the pace that he played it. Just a very delicate soft

screw shot here to hold for the blue. He just needs to play for the

gap. It is negotiated. He was 62 ahead, with 75 on the table and a

little bit thin on this red and he would have liked. He certainly won't

be bringing the red of the side crush on, that is for sure.

This brown and another red. Just to make sure. Just to make sure of

winning this fourth frame. That will mean a 3-1 lead going into the

interval. You see, 67 ahead, 67 on the table, so just this red. Well

played. It has been a first-class break, hasn't it, a super break.

Barry Hawkins took the opportunity there to try and dislodge the red

from the side cushion. He just needs a good putt now. Good well played.

That was a very nice cannon on the blue. Just a little bit thin. I am

sure this Crucible crowd would love to see Barry Hawkins make a century

here. 51 centuries so far in the

tournament. The double is not on, I'm afraid. It is an excellent

break. Well played, Barry Hawkins. He leads 3-1, going into the

mid-session interval. A few mistakes are creeping in now

for both players. That is slightly surprising because they have both

had time to settle into this match now.

There is another example now. Professional players nowadays don't

like to leave reds along the top cushion, backed cushion. When you

get on those shots straight, or just straight you have to play with pace

and these pockets are not easy. He may decide to play the cannon into

the middle of the three reds. Just below the pink spot.

That little cannon has pushed that red safe. I think he has got second

prize and just drifted enough to get onto the red to the left of the

pink. Just deciding whether he wants to

play for the green or the blue of this red. A little surprised he

didn't play a little stun run-through through there and widen

the angle to finish on the green in such a way to bring the white back

to the red. I am not saying you baguette on the red but the cue ball

will be travelling for no reason. He played this perfectly. Yes,

excellent shot. Lots of left-hand side of the cue ball there. To check

the cue ball off the side cushion and the baulk cushion. That is not a

very good shot. It is a shot you don't see very

often now. To power the black in Ros the side cushion and into the bunch,

OK the bunch is not very big at the moment, just three reds but he will

either do that or go on the left-hand side to go to the back

cushion. Which will it be? The left-hand side. Watch the cue ball

checkup. He played it nicely. Does he have an angle? Not only to pot

the red but to get onto the black half ball? This is not easy. He has

to treat these pockets with respect. The more pacey play, the more chance

of missing. He has played that very nicely. He has lost the cue ball. It

was a good pop but he won't be taking the black on from there.

It is comfortable but I tend to agree that the any problem is just

rolling up the black is the only advantage at all because it will not

gain anything of it. I would rather play the yellow and making go off

more than a couple of conditions. The most he can get out of this is

four points. The only problem with this shot is

if Stephen doesn't judge the pace correctly there is a chance of

leaving a red into the right centre. He played that nicely. You doesn't

want to leave a touching ball. Touching ball. And he has. This is a

very good opportunity for Barry Hawkins to have a little study at

the Balkan end of the table and decide which end he would like to

leave the cue ball. Obviously he wants to leave Stephen Maguire in

the trickiest position he possibly can. And that is behind the green.

It is not quite hard enough. Just... He has played it well. Snookered.

Stephen will probably come off two cushions to nestle into the reds. If

he plays one cushion there is every chance that he will slip past the

reds, thin. I think he is playing to cushions. I think he has underhit

that by quite some way. Foul and MS. Barry Hawkins, four. Looking

slightly bemused, he knew straightaway he had under it that.

Foul and a miss. Barry Hawkins, four. A similar shot what Peter

Whittingham previous escape from the snooker, he didn't want to catch one

of these reds half ball and Birch ply them, that would free the red to

be portable. Surely this time he will make sure

he gets it hard enough. That is too narrow. Just got it. It slid off the

last cushion. 20 points behind, he is at the moment, and I don't think

this red is comfortable into the middle.

I think this goes, Willy. He is just checking to see if he could possibly

leave a red into the opposite centre. He should be able to hold a

cue ball for the black here. I don't think he has to screw off the black

cushion, just their delicate screw shot here. Well, that goes to show

how small these middle pockets are because it looked as though that was

in. It just caught in the knuckle. Just caught the near knuckle. These

middle pockets are small. Stephen Maguire is not at the races

at the moment. He really is going through it. He had a very convincing

win in the previous round but he hasn't got his game together at all

at this moment in time. He made a break of 180 and look to be in good

form but since then he has only had one break over 30.

Even though he is 20 points behind he will be horrified if he doesn't

win the frame at this visit. A fractious situation, this.

He will probably play for baulk colour of this last red. It isn't a

problem if you're playing black yellow but it is a lot easier to

play for baulk colour to get onto the yellow, just to make absolutely

sure. Look at this. That is so careless. Honestly, I can't tell you

how careless that is. Have you seen a more careless shot than that,

Peter? No. I think to be fed ter Stegen, he got a kick there which

took the cue ball. -- at the pace out of the cue ball.

This is a really tough pink to take on.

It was the wick on this red. Let's have a look at its bounce. He'll be

seething inside having not played for a baulk colour off the last red.

Once again, a frame without any big breaks in it. A bit scrappy, to be

honest. Barry Hawkins will be absolutely delighted, goes further

clear at 4-1. Barry Hawkings to break off, frame

six. Now leading 4-1. That S frame for Stephen Maguire mentally

as much as anything. Lovely pot. That is one of Steve

Maguire's great attributes. Even if he gets upset with himself, he uses

it in a positive way and asks for greater effort. It's what the great

champions do. Stephen Hendry was very similar. Sometimes you see

Stephen put his head down disappointed with his own

performance but if you gave him another chance, that would be it,

he'd clear up. Can Maguire use the disappointment of the last frame.

And ask himself for a greater effort in terms of concentration and

determination? Didn't play that yellow as good as he would have

liked. Slightly under-hit but shouldn't be

a problem. To the left of the black now. Opens

up the two reds. If he can guarantee finishing low,

this is probably the right shot. Massive target to go into if he

wants to. There could be a bit of cue-banging

in a minute there. Even though he is 20 points behind,

he's just gone favourite to pinch another frame here.

Barry Hawkingings was bemused there, the angle and pace that the cue ball

came off the side cushion. Not too much damage done. Nice

position still. Nicely played. All the reds are now

in potable positions. Should be able to play with top spin

for the red at the bottom of the cluster of four. Into the opposite

black pocket. Just would have been reluctant in

playing that shot if he'd have had to play it with left-hand side

running side. This really would hurt Steve Maguire

if Barry Hawkins goes on to win this frame in this visit because he's

getting his chances Steve Maguire, he's just not scoring, and that is

just most unlike him. He was flawless against his last

opponent. The shot he just played there was tricky.

Could be a lifeline for Steve Maguire that last shot. And if he

can't hold the cue ball off this blue, he may not be able to play it

with pace because he could be going close to the in-off. Is that going

to reach the pocket? He's over-cut that by a mile.

This is an unexpected chance for Steve Maguire. A typical example of

a player trying to play a shot that they knew in their heart wasn't

really on. So that was a mistake. Can Stephen Maguire capitalise?

Might play into the pink and knock it on and off the cushion. Bound to

be on the blue or pink. He could be be pushing the pink towards the

pocket and the pink could go in the centre. He'd be very unfortunate to

do that. The pink got quite close. Close to the corner as well!

Goodness me, that's ridiculous the pace he played that at.

Steve Maguire is one of the best players in the world and it shows

you what the Crucible can do to you. It can sometimes make you look like

one of the worst players in the world. He's really struggling.

So after a number of un-Forced errors from Stephen Maguire, it's

Barry Hawkins who takes the sixth frame to lead 5-1.

Which was Steve Maguire has given himself a chance. Just one snooker

required now. Clever and unlucky. Clever the fact

he tried to bring the black a couple of inches off the cushion so it

would have been a chance to snooker behind or even if the likelihood

that he'd miss this, but if it did it would be the possible chance for

a clearance. With the black safe, it's still Barry's frame to lose

obviously. The brown is not in a bad place. If

Stephen Maguire can send the green down the table, good chance of

getting the cue ball behind the brown. Very good effort. Very good

effort. Excellent shot. Well played. I think Barry will play the swerve

here. Another chance. A wry smile on

Barry's face when that green cannoned into the pink as he knows

now. Only problem is that the green is

going towards the side cushion. Very very easy to hit. If the green had

just stayed two or three inches more into the table, not gone quite so

close to the side cushion, it would have been a lot more difficult to

hit. This is a big target. Wow, that was a very poor shot.

Didn't hit the cue ball very hard and there was lots of slide off the

black cushion. Just needed more pace. I don't know why he played

this low. Weird. All of a sudden Steve Maguire may be favourite in a

minute. Well played. Barry doesn't want to bring the black back into

play. If he plays the swerve shot, there is a good chance of him doing

that. Wow, you could never have foreseen

that. Very, very unfortunate. He's got four points out of it, but I

think Steve Maguire would have been preferring the black to have been

played in there, rather than the in-off.

People questioning why Hawkins has been put back into play.

Needs to be careful not to push the green over the right hand black

pocket. And that is exactly what he's done. Needs a bit of luck. Will

the pink come to his rescue? And it has. Very poor shot from

Stephen Maguire. Always an excellent chance of pushing the green towards

the corner pocket and he's been very fortunate.

The green may have gone just too far for the cut. Very, very thin. He's

looking at it. Very, very thin. He'd have to play this with a fair

bit of left hand side to get the brown. What a shot! It was always

going to be very difficult to get on the brown there. A wonderful pot.

Very thin. Did have a touch of left hand side but not as much as he

wanted. Slightly overhit it. Didn't quite

get the angle right. Good chance for Barry Hawkins to clip this brown

thin off the side cushion on to the baulk cushion and get the cue ball

somewhere near the black. Preferably the other side of the black. That's

what he's played. Just a little too thick. Good shot.

This brown does cut into the green pocket, then it's a tough pot.

You can just see the brown here. This is a very, very thin contact.

This is one of the occasions where it's important to get the balls

exactly where they were. Some times if the player is playing the same

shot you don't mind being a quarter of an inch out of the way, but this

is essential really when you consider that Barry Hawkins was

ridiculously in front in this frame, Stephen Maguire needed two snookers.

He's well back into the frame now though.

This is a chance. It's thin. The cue ball will be travelling up and down

the table. Good pot but he's not on the blue.

This is really, really tough. Me fought so hard to get back in the

frame. Decided against the pot and has

played an excellent safety shot. I don't blame him the way things

have been going. No. He's got himself back into the frame, needed

a couple of snookers. Huge frame. Good safety shot from Barry. Little

bit too heavy. Stephen would love to bring the

black back into play if at all possible. Needs a good blue.

With the black safe, I wouldn't be surprised if Barry played the double

into the middle pocket because he'd be on a long pink. He's played the

safety shot. I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd have played that

because if it would have gone in, he would have had a long pink to go at

with the black safe. He has not put Stephen Maguire under

any pressure with that shot. He definitely would have got a good cue

ball with my suggestion. The cue ball would have been very close to

the baulk cushion and he would have had a long pink to have a go at,

have the blue gone in. You feel that Barry Hawkins will almost certainly

take this double on now. Especially with the black currently

out of cushion. He doesn't want to be giving Stephen Maguire the

opportunity to move that black. A good effort. This blue is really,

really tough. You would miss this seven times out of ten, especially

with how small these middle for play. You can hardly see any pocket

at all their from that angle, and if it just catches the near jaw it does

not go in. This is such a tough shot. The fact that the bank off its

spotters whelk is probably the reason he has decided to player

safety shot. If the pink had been on its own shot he would have probably

played on. He did make contact with the blue. By far and away the

longest frame of the match so far. Stephen Clegg this quarter ball to

push the blue onto the side cushion. He was a bit shocked to see the cue

ball only just glancing it. This is a tough safety. He has

played that really, really well. Well played. An excellent shot.

That is another excellent reply. A tap on the table as Stephen Maguire

walked past. If he is swinging this around the ankles who needs to make

sure he doesn't hit the Bluetooth it here. This is a mistake. Just got

the blue to catch the far jaw and go close enough to the cushion to make

this very awkward. What does he do here? This is such a tough pot but

he also has to do a very difficult safety shot. The blue nine times out

of ten will go along the top cushion bring the black into place may be

playing it has been a sea cannon tried to get the blue somewhere near

the black. He played that very well. If he hadn't cost off, it was an

excellent shot. It was a good safety play but now Stephen Maguire has a

chance to bring the black interplay. In playing this Stephen Maguire

needs to make sure that the blue makes contact with the black. It

should be full, otherwise it should be brought out ten or 12 inches. He

has played that really well, absolutely perfectly. Slightly

unfortunate to push the black towards the right side cushion and

you can see the disappointment on Stephen Maguire 's face there. He

played an excellent shot. He expected the black to finish in open

play there. It has gone very awkward. In fairness, the black is

slightly easier to pop there than it was before.

A clever shot. The key thing there was getting the object ball say. As

long as we got a good blue that he was pretty happy whatever happened

but he has knocked the black safe as well. A clever shot.

It is one of those where you try and push it past the middle pocket. He

may get the snooker behind the pink, but don't risk playing the snooker

to hit the blue, turn to hit the blue, you want to make sure the blue

get past the middle pocket. He has done, the snooker would have been a

bonus. Do you play this the same way? Just

push the blue down the middle? He was just possibly looking at the

possibility of catching the blue very thin and leaving the long

snooker behind the pink but to do that he would have to it to the

cushion first and that is fraught with danger. I think he is OK. That

won't pot from there. Fortunate not to leave that on.

Does he have an ankle of the pink to be able to move the black? It looks

hard to me. What a massive frame this was for

Stephen Maguire, for the money he would have been 6-1 behind in every

chance now with this double to be just chaining -- trailing by three.

It looks high. Stephen Maguire, 11. Thin clip, safety shot for Barry

Hawkins, side cushion, playing the black. He has decided to go up and

down and he has not played that very well at all. Very surprised at his

choice of shot there. This is an opportunity now for Stephen Maguire

to pull back. This was a frame in which he needed two snookers. Well

played, well played. Fantastic partner from Stephen Maguire. You

can see how much that Minster. A fantastic shot on the black. Stephen

Maguire now trails Barry Hawkins by 5-2.

The last frame of this session. In some ways this is a bigger frame now

firmly for Barry Hawkins then is for Stephen Maguire. Barry Hawkins will

be terrified if he comes out at 5-3. It dominated the session and he was

in control in frame seven and he let off the hook good style. Whenever

Stephen Maguire gets on this frame is a bonus. That is the kind of shot

that will give you confidence. A brilliant pot. He went all out for

position on the black. He's going to have to play the

cannon into reds here. This is the best chance since frame

one. Can he win a frame in one visit?

Just lost the cue ball slightly. It is certainly a fair bit thinner than

he would have liked. He is going to be trusting to luck a little with

the cannon ya. He has played that very well, he couldn't have played

it any better. He is very thin on this red and it is not ideal. The

problem was the previous red that he potted where they lost position on

the black. That is a lovely shot. Well played, well played. Great

judgment there from Stephen Maguire. The reds either side of the pink

will pot into the corner pocket but if you overhit on the left you on

the one on the right and vice versa but he decided to go into the bunch,

or, I thought he did. He misjudged that completely. Unfortunately I

don't think you saw the shot that you called. That certainly would

have been the most straightforward shot. This is a really tough red

into the centre now and surely you would expect him to play a good

safety shot here because if he misses this red into the centre, if

he takes it on, he could well be leaving a red into the yellow

pocket. This is really tough. A little unlucky there not to have

pushed that red into a portable position. He played it nicely, that

shot. A long way to go in this frame but

if Stephen Maguire can manage to win it I think you will be absolutely

delighted to only be 5-3 behind. In fairness I think he would be quite

happy with 6-2, the weather game has gone. He has been really struggling

so it would be definitely a bonus to win this last frame.

Both of these players come back the two sessions tomorrow at 10am and

7pm. I've just been told in my ear that

they have back-to-back sessions tomorrow which makes it an even

harder days work. They play the second session tomorrow afternoon

and then they come back tomorrow evening for their final session. Not

too much time to get ready for the final session when you could finish

about 5pm or 6pm and then be back at 7pm.

The cue ball is running a little loose here. Maybe able to get

through to the red on the right-hand side and if he can he can take this

on without a problem, knowing he can play for baulk colour, he can even

play for a pink which pots in the right-hand corner. It was a bad

mistake from Stephen. Foul. Barry Hawkins has gone to sleep! Let us

remind everyone he was 5-1 in front and his opponent needed to smokers

about 20 minutes ago. -- two snookers.

Having missed the long red and gone in off Barry Hawkins would have been

absolutely delighted to see the red travel past the left-hand middle

pocket. This could be a strange choice of

shot from Stephen Maguire to put Barry Hawkins in because I think

there is an opportunity to play a shot for nothing and find a gap. He

could play the red which is to the left of the cluster of four. He may

have to play it with a touch of right-hand side to check the cue

ball, to avoid the two reds near the right-hand cushion. I am very

surprised that Stephen Maguire decided to put Barry Hawkins back in

here. I can't agree with you more. If this goes right, he will regret

it. If he plays it plain-ball and kisses the two reds on the

right-hand side there was a little bit of check side. There it is.

Stephen Maguire must be thinking, what have I done? All he did when he

was sitting in that chair, was he said good shot.

The fact that the brown is off its spot makes this quite an easy spot.

Just coming back for the blue in the middle. Stephen Maguire must be

kicking himself now because there is every chance that Barry Hawkins can

get right back into the frame, if not visit -- win it at this

particular visit. This will be the shot that tells us

he was favourite to win this frame. If this goes right Barry Hawkins

will be the favourite because every red will be in fray -- play in the

pink available on the black to both corners. He just has to be careful

now and if he doesn't win the frame at this visit he should certainly

take a slight lead. 32, Barry Hawkins. Thatcher shows

the importance of every section in the World Championship, that you

protect a lead. We got very anxious on that and decelerated. He just

turned it over. He was playing with a little bit of side to help the pot

and the fact that he decelerated made the site took very quickly.

What a lifeline again for Stephen Maguire. The way this session has

gone we could possibly say that Stephen Maguire could have lost it

7-1 but there is now every chance he is going to lose it 5-3.

Just played with plenty of side there to avoid kissing the red on

the site cushion. He just has to make sure he doesn't finish straight

on this next back -- black which makes position to one of the

remaining four red very easy. It just shows you how I'm confident

Stephen Maguire is not to play for the black from there, he is just

trying to make things very easy. 44 in front and this will be 49, so red

and colour. He pinched the last frame as well. There is a

difference. The red colour is required.

Bit of adrenaline from Stephen Maguire. He played for the blue and

screw that. Maybe able to get through to the pink here. Took the

yellow. A good safety shot now. The cue ball

on the baulk cushion, possibly behind the green. Stephen Maguire,

He will pop this red, or try to put the red, and then get back onto the

pink and get it back on its own spot. He still needs the one

of this session trailing only by five frames to three. He has not

played well and you feel that Barry Hawkins has missed a bit of a trick

really. So Hawkins is in front in this one
